  1. If you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 5, specifically if you would open up your Bibles to page 1058.

    John 5 chapter mention

  2. ! Let me ask you a question, especially the men in the room.

  3. What's your favorite musical?

  4. I've had the privilege of seeing a number of musicals.

  5. I've seen Shrek the musical as part of a streaming.

  6. Gentlemen, if you're not used to seeing musicals, that's the place I'd start.

  7. The pot of humor is phenomenal.

  8. Dear Evan Hansen, seen it.

  9. The Notebook, seen it.

  10. Newsies, seen it.

  11. That changed, that was my opening to musicals.

  12. And I'm so glad to have seen Newsies.

  13. And then there's Hamilton.

  14. Now, before you judge me for being a musical fan,

  15. before you judge me,

  16. you've got to understand something about Hamilton.

  17. Hamilton is set at the time of our country's founding.

  18. And one of the reappearing characters is King George, who is hilarious.

  19. And what we see unfolding in this musical

  20. is our forefathers asking one essential question.

  21. Who gave King George the right to govern us?

  22. To rule us?

  23. To tax us?

  24. To determine our future as a nation?

  25. To hold out to us either life or death?

  26. Who gave King George the right?

  27. Who gave him the right to judge us?

  28. Our forefathers rose up against this mere man, King George,

  29. and threw off the yoke of his tyranny,

  30. and we're going to be celebrating that this summer, 250 years ago.

  31. This morning in John 5, 19 through 20,

  32. we see another king.

  33. Not a tyrannical King George.

  34. Not a mere man.

  35. Totally God.

  36. Totally man.

  37. The Son of God.

  38. The Son of Man.

  39. Jesus Christ.

  40. And he's been given all authority,

  41. not just to give life as our Savior,

  42. but to judge all people everywhere

  43. as the judge.

  44. So let me just get something,

  45. a question in your mind.

  46. What will you say to him

  47. on the day you stand before him?

  48. Could you imagine this?

  49. Some person standing before the risen and reigning

  50. all-glorious Christ on Judgment Day.

  51. Jesus, who gave you the right to judge me?

  52. Who gave you the right to judge me?

  53. Sounds crazy, doesn't it?

  54. We are not to rise up

  55. and throw off the authority of Jesus.

  56. It's quite the opposite.

  57. We are to humble ourselves

  58. and come under his life-giving authority.

  59. He is both our Savior and Judge.

  60. And at great cost to himself,

  61. he was condemned in our place

  62. so that we could pass from death to life.

  63. And so let me read John 5, 19 through 29.

  64. You can read along with me.

  65. Listen as I read God's Word.

  66. So Jesus said to them,

  67. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  68. the Son can do nothing of his own accord,

  69. but only what he sees the Father doing.

  70. For whatever the Father does,

  71. the Son does likewise.

  72. For the Father loves the Son

  73. and shows him all that he himself is doing.

  74. And greater works than these will he show him

  75. so that you may marvel.

  76. For as the Father raises the dead

  77. and gives them life,

  78. so also the Son gives life to whom he will.

  79. For the Father judges no one,

  80. but he has given all judgment to the Son,

  81. that all may honor the Son

  82. just as they honor the Father.

  83. Whoever does not honor the Son

  84. does not honor the Father who sent him.

  85. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  86. whoever hears my words

  87. and believes him who sent me

  88. has eternal life.

  89. He does not come into judgment,

  90. but has passed from death to life.

  91. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  92. an hour is coming and is now here,

  93. when the dead will hear the voice

  94. of the Son of God

  95. and those who hear will live.

  96. For as the Father has life in himself,

  97. so he has granted the Son also

  98. to have life in himself.

  99. And he has given him authority

  100. to execute judgment

  101. because he is the Son of Man.

  102. Do not marvel at this,

  103. for an hour is coming

  104. when all who are in the tombs

  105. will hear his voice

  106. and come out.

  107. Those who have done good

  108. to the resurrection of life

  109. and those who have done evil

  110. to the resurrection of judgment.

  111. Who gives Jesus the right to judge us?

  112. Jesus, what gives you the right to judge me?

  113. So I want to help you see

  114. three aspects of the authority of Jesus

  115. to judge this morning.

  116. The nature of his authority,

  117. the effect of his authority,

  118. and the scope of his authority.

  119. John 5, in its entirety,

  120. is about the authority of Jesus.

  121. Last week, we saw his authority

  122. to heal on the Sabbath.

  123. And this week,

  124. it's his authority to judge.

  125. So, let's look at the nature

  126. of his authority.

  127. It's in verses 19 through 23.

  128. And the first thing you need to see here

  129. is a little phrase Jesus likes to use.

  130. Truly, truly, I say to you.

  131. It's a little phrase

  132. that Jesus alone uses.

  133. Truly, truly, I say to you.

  134. What he's saying is literally,

  135. amen, amen.

  136. So be it.

  137. So be it.

  138. Here's what he's doing.

  139. He's saying, listen carefully.

  140. Truly.

  141. Because what I am about to do you,

  142. tell you, explain to you,

  143. is something of life importance.

  144. And in our passage,

  145. there are three truly, trulies.

  146. I'd also like you to notice

  147. who he's talking to.

  148. In verse 19, it says,

  149. Jesus said to them.

  150. And then later in verse,

  151. I think it's 20,

  152. when he says,

  153. so that you may marvel,

  154. it's a y'all,

  155. he's not talking to his disciples here.

  156. He's talking to the very people

  157. who want to kill him,

  158. to his opponents,

  159. to those who are judging him

  160. for blasphemy.

  161. He's speaking to them.

  162. And so remember,

  163. in verse 19,

  164. that Jesus has just been charged

  165. with blasphemy.

  166. These people,

  167. these religious leaders,

  168. want to kill him.

  169. And now he's saying to them,

  170. truly, truly,

  171. I say to you,

  172. and let's pick it up there.

  173. What's the foundation

  174. for this authority to judge?

  175. The first thing I want you to notice,

  176. it's a shared authority.

  177. It's a shared right.

  178. Throughout these verses,

  179. verses 19 through 23,

  180. we have this little coupling

  181. of two names,

  182. son, father,

  183. son, father,

  184. son, father.

  185. And what that's getting at

  186. is the father and son of God.

  187. We are now wading into

  188. the Christian doctrine

  189. of the Trinity.

  190. And you can summarize the Trinity

  191. with three statements.

  192. God has eternally existed

  193. as three distinct persons.

  194. Each person's fully God.

  195. There is one God.

  196. You hold those together,

  197. you're orthodox.

  198. And so what we have here

  199. is a statement Jesus is making

  200. about the nature of the Trinity.

  201. It's the foundation

  202. for his authority.

  203. But if you notice,

  204. the father and son,

  205. well, they share divine essence.

  206. Jesus will say in John 10, 30,

  207. I and the father are one.

  208. But there's also this distinction.

  209. There's the son and the father.

  210. It's a specific kind of relationship.

  211. They have the same essence

  212. of godness,

  213. yet there's a distinction

  214. when it comes to role.

  215. And the son is very clear

  216. on what his role is.

  217. In verse 19, he says,

  218. I can do nothing.

  219. The son can do nothing

  220. of his own accord,

  221. but only what he sees

  222. the father doing.

  223. And what he's saying there is,

  224. hey, I have not come.

  225. The father has not sent me

  226. for me to do whatever I want.

  227. I have come in submission

  228. to my father's will

  229. to accomplish his plan.

  230. And so what we see in verse 19

  231. is that the son sees

  232. what his father is doing

  233. and he submits himself

  234. to the father's will.

  235. He's not going to do anything

  236. except what the will

  237. of his father is.

  238. Shared essence,

  239. full Godhead,

  240. distinction of roles.

  241. So what this means is

  242. the father and the son

  243. are in lockstep together

  244. to accomplish the purposes

  245. of the father.

  246. And it would apply

  247. to the Holy Spirit as well.

  248. They're here to accomplish

  249. what God the father

  250. has ordained.

  251. And so I just want to say,

  252. help you to see right here

  253. that what establishes

  254. his authority to judge

  255. is his shared essence

  256. as being God.

  257. But it's also part

  258. of a shared plan.

  259. In verses 19 through 20,

  260. you can see it.

  261. There's this repeated

  262. do and doing.

  263. So Jesus said to them,

  264. truly, truly,

  265. I say to you,

  266. the son can do nothing

  267. of his own accord,

  268. but only what he sees

  269. his father doing.

  270. For whatever the father does,

  271. that the son does likewise.

  272. For the father loved the son

  273. and shows him all

  274. that he himself is doing.

  275. All of this doing

  276. is getting at a plan.

  277. Shared essence,

  278. shared plan.

  279. And it's the plan

  280. of God the father

  281. that was established

  282. before the foundation

  283. of the world,

  284. a plan for the fullness of time.

  285. I preached a sermon on this

  286. a few months ago

  287. on Ephesians chapter 1,

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  288. verses 3 through 14,

  289. talking about this plan

  290. this triune plan.

  291. It is a big plan.

  292. It's a Christocentric plan.

  293. It's a people-moving plan.

  294. And it's a glory plan.

  295. It's the plan of salvation.

  296. And what we have going on here

  297. is what the son

  298. sees his father doing,

  299. the son is doing likewise.

  300. And do you know what that is?

  301. The plan of salvation.

  302. That's what they are doing.

  303. Another area that establishes

  304. Jesus' authority

  305. is shared power.

  306. 21 and 22.

  307. Power is the ability

  308. to accomplish something.

  309. I need power to mow my lawn.

  310. But in this case,

  311. it's power to accomplish a plan.

  312. And what kind of power

  313. are we talking about?

  314. Would you just look at verse 21?

  315. For as the father raises the dead

  316. and gives them life,

  317. so also the son gives life

  318. to whom he will.

  319. That is an interesting kind of power.

  320. power.

  321. That's resurrection power.

  322. That's raising people

  323. from the dead power.

  324. Now that's power.

  325. That's God power.

  326. This past week,

  327. your pastor was minding

  328. his own business in his office.

  329. Kelly Schneeberger comes by

  330. and she says,

  331. hey, can you help me with something?

  332. I said, of course,

  333. because I'm a servant.

  334. Of course.

  335. And then she said something

  336. about a bat.

  337. A bat.

  338. She led me to an undisclosed room

  339. in this building.

  340. And she pointed up

  341. to an HVAC unit

  342. and said,

  343. bat.

  344. And right next to

  345. the HVAC unit

  346. was this little dark thing.

  347. Now,

  348. I have experience with bats,

  349. believe it or not.

  350. So I took an extended,

  351. lengthy item,

  352. poked it,

  353. nothing happened.

  354. I ascended

  355. into a very,

  356. it was very dangerous, folks.

  357. I ascended upon high

  358. and I had gloves on

  359. and I reached up

  360. to that bat

  361. and I grabbed it

  362. and it crumpled.

  363. And so I pulled it down

  364. and I spoke,

  365. live bat, live!

  366. Do you know what happened?

  367. It just crumpled more.

  368. No life.

  369. I don't have the power

  370. to give life to the dead.

  371. Anybody in the room?

  372. This is unique God power.

  373. And this power

  374. to give life

  375. is also the power

  376. to condemn forever.

  377. If you look at verse 22,

  378. for the Father judges no one,

  379. but has given all judgment

  380. to the Son.

  381. this is a judgment.

  382. If we're talking about

  383. eternal life

  384. and raising from the dead

  385. on one side,

  386. this kind of judgment

  387. is,

  388. has to do with eternal death.

  389. Judgment,

  390. being cast out

  391. into darkness

  392. where there's

  393. weeping and gnashing

  394. of teeth.

  395. And what we have here

  396. is the Son

  397. has not just been

  398. given the authority,

  399. the power

  400. to be able to give life,

  401. He has the power

  402. to condemn

  403. for eternity.

  404. shared essence,

  405. shared plan,

  406. shared power,

  407. and the last thing

  408. I want you to see

  409. is shared honor.

  410. in verse 20,

  411. we read,

  412. in greater works

  413. than these

  414. will He show Him.

  415. Will the Father

  416. show the Son?

  417. And just think of

  418. John 11's coming

  419. where Jesus

  420. raises Lazarus

  421. from the dead.

  422. Greater works.

  423. And then He says,

  424. so that you may marvel.

  425. Remember who He's speaking to.

  426. He's speaking to His enemies.

  427. Greater works are coming, guys,

  428. so that you will marvel.

  429. So that you will be amazed

  430. and that you will give me

  431. the honor due me

  432. and the Father

  433. will be honored as well.

  434. Look down now

  435. at verse 23,

  436. that all may honor the Son

  437. just as they honor the Father.

  438. Whoever does not honor the Son

  439. does not honor the Father

  440. who sent Him.

  441. this honoring

  442. is reverencing.

  443. It's being in awe of.

  444. It's deep respect.

  445. It's acknowledging

  446. that Jesus

  447. is the judge of all

  448. and that He was given

  449. that responsibility

  450. by the Father

  451. and He's to be honored as well.

  452. which for His enemies,

  453. the Jews hearing this,

  454. this is what that means.

  455. If you don't honor the Son,

  456. even though you say

  457. you're honoring the Father,

  458. you're not.

  459. This is the kind of honor

  460. and marveling

  461. that results in submission

  462. to the one

  463. who has the authority.

  464. Recognizing

  465. that this one

  466. has eternal life

  467. and can condemn

  468. to eternal death.

  469. He has the right to judge.

  470. Jesus,

  471. what gives you

  472. the right to judge me?

  473. You're God.

  474. You're executing God's plan.

  475. You are going to honor God

  476. in all that we do.

  477. And you have God power.

  478. So,

  479. when we're talking about

  480. the nature

  481. of the Son's authority,

  482. it starts with Him

  483. being fully God.

  484. shared essence.

  485. The second

  486. aspect

  487. of the authority

  488. of the Son

  489. I want you to see

  490. is the effect

  491. of His authority.

  492. And we see that

  493. in verse 24.

  494. And it's queued up

  495. with another

  496. truly, truly.

  497. Truly, truly,

  498. I say to you,

  499. whoever hears my voice

  500. and believes Him

  501. who sent me

  502. has eternal life.

  503. He does not come

  504. into judgment,

  505. but He has passed

  506. from death

  507. to life.

  508. What Jesus

  509. is providing

  510. for us here

  511. is the major

  512. criteria

  513. for His

  514. judging us

  515. at the end

  516. of the age.

  517. It's whether you

  518. hear and believe

  519. His word.

  520. His word.

  521. His word about

  522. who He is.

  523. His word about

  524. His Father

  525. who sent Him.

  526. His word about

  527. the reason

  528. why He was sent.

  529. To save.

  530. I know that

  531. many of you

  532. can say,

  533. John 3, 16,

  534. from heart,

  535. for God so loved

  536. the world

  537. that He gave

  538. His one-of-a-kind

  539. Son

  540. that whoever

  541. believes in Him

  542. hears and believes

  543. shall not be

  544. condemned for eternity

  545. apart from God

  546. shall not perish

  547. but have eternal life.

  548. Live.

  549. What Jesus is saying

  550. is if you believe

  551. what He is saying

  552. about Himself,

  553. about God,

  554. about why He came,

  555. why He was sent,

  556. if you believe that

  557. to be true,

  558. if you see your need

  559. to be rescued,

  560. if you see that

  561. Jesus is the only

  562. solution to your

  563. biggest problem

  564. the moment you believe

  565. you are given

  566. eternal life.

  567. He's not under judgment.

  568. No longer under judgment.

  569. The moment you believe

  570. you have passed

  571. from death

  572. to life,

  573. you're not under judgment,

  574. you're no longer

  575. condemned.

  576. What Jesus is talking about

  577. is your conversion.

  578. So let me spell that out

  579. for you a little bit.

  580. What happens

  581. the moment you believe

  582. that Jesus is

  583. God in the flesh

  584. who was sent by the Father

  585. to take away our sins?

  586. It's immediate life.

  587. Immediate eternal life.

  588. There's this misconception

  589. that those who believe

  590. in Jesus

  591. that eternal life

  592. begins when you die.

  593. it begins

  594. when you believe.

  595. The moment you believe

  596. you are given

  597. eternal life.

  598. I can show you

  599. right from the text.

  600. Truly, truly,

  601. I say to you,

  602. whoever hears my word

  603. and believes him

  604. who sent him

  605. has eternal life.

  606. That's a present

  607. tense verb

  608. saying it's now.

  609. It's what it means

  610. to be born again.

  611. To become a new creation.

  612. The moment you believe

  613. in what Christ has done,

  614. that moment you believe.

  615. And so the first aspect

  616. of this eternal life

  617. is that it's immediate.

  618. Second aspect of it,

  619. it's secure.

  620. It's irrevocable.

  621. This life

  622. that is granted to us,

  623. given to us

  624. by the Son,

  625. it's unsnatchable.

  626. You want to flip

  627. in your Bibles with me

  628. a couple pages

  629. to your right

  630. to John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  631. I can't wait

  632. to preach

  633. John 10.

  634. Man,

  635. it's going to be awesome.

  636. Not my preaching,

  637. the passage

  638. is going to be awesome.

  639. In John chapter 10,

    John 10 chapter mention

  640. in verse 27,

  641. he says,

  642. this is Jesus speaking,

  643. my sheep

  644. hear my voice

  645. and I know them

  646. and they follow me.

  647. I give them

  648. eternal life

  649. and they will never perish

  650. and no one

  651. will snatch them

  652. out of my hand.

  653. So just think about

  654. what we just read

  655. about who Jesus is.

  656. Shared essence,

  657. right?

  658. Shared power,

  659. shared honoring

  660. with God.

  661. There's another

  662. shared something.

  663. He has you

  664. in his hand.

  665. He's given you

  666. eternal life.

  667. This eternal life

  668. that starts immediately

  669. is irrevocable.

  670. No one can snatch you

  671. out of his hand,

  672. but it doesn't stop there.

  673. Look at verse 29.

  674. My Father

  675. who has given them

  676. to me

  677. is greater than all

  678. and no one is able

  679. to snatch them

  680. out of the Father's hand.

  681. You're in a double

  682. divine vice

  683. if you're a believer

  684. in Jesus

  685. and this eternal life

  686. has begun

  687. instantaneously

  688. that it's irrevocable.

  689. You're unsnatchable.

  690. that means

  691. you can't even

  692. pry off

  693. the fingers

  694. of God

  695. that grip you.

  696. Secure.

  697. I and the Father

  698. are one.

  699. Here's one

  700. that you need to hear.

  701. Something about

  702. this eternal life.

  703. This eternal life

  704. that's immediate

  705. and unsnatchable

  706. from us

  707. is experiential.

  708. this eternal life

  709. which God gives us

  710. the moment we believe,

  711. it has real effects.

  712. Real life-changing effects.

  713. It changes the way

  714. that we live.

  715. It changes us.

  716. How, you ask?

  717. First and foremost.

  718. it changes

  719. who you live for.

  720. Instead of living

  721. for yourself,

  722. this eternal life

  723. is going to be

  724. pushing yourself

  725. out to the perimeter

  726. and bringing Jesus

  727. into the center

  728. so that you're living

  729. with Jesus Christ

  730. as the controlling

  731. center of your life.

  732. The one who is life

  733. ends up

  734. ruling your life,

  735. controlling your life.

  736. life.

  737. There's another passage

  738. that I want you

  739. to turn to.

  740. It's John 15.

  741. I can't wait

  742. to preach John 15.

  743. It's awesome.

  744. This is where Jesus

  745. calls himself

  746. the vine

  747. and we are the branches.

  748. It's an interesting

  749. organic relationship.

  750. A branch can't

  751. bear fruit

  752. on its own.

  753. It can only bear fruit

  754. if it's attached

  755. to the vine.

  756. And when you're

  757. attached to the vine,

  758. you bear fruit.

  759. In John 15.

  760. 5 we read,

  761. I am the vine,

  762. you are the branches,

  763. whoever abides in me

  764. and I am.

  765. Another way to say it

  766. is when Jesus

  767. is the controlling

  768. center of your life,

  769. the all-governing

  770. reality of your life,

  771. the one consuming

  772. passion of your life,

  773. the one whom

  774. you depend on,

  775. when you are

  776. trusting in him,

  777. he it is that

  778. bears much fruit

  779. for apart from me

  780. you can do nothing.

  781. Verse 8,

  782. by this my father

  783. is glorified

  784. that you bear much fruit

  785. and so prove to be

  786. my disciples.

  787. And in all of this

  788. fruit talk,

  789. look at verse 12,

  790. this is my command.

  791. Here is the

  792. principal fruit

  793. that I am going

  794. to produce in you,

  795. that you love

  796. one another

  797. as I have loved you.

  798. You see,

  799. eternal life

  800. has real effects.

  801. it changes

  802. the way we,

  803. who we live for.

  804. We go from living

  805. for ourselves

  806. to living for Jesus

  807. and when we're

  808. living for Jesus

  809. he begins to

  810. bear fruit in us.

  811. Fruit in which

  812. we're living for Christ,

  813. we're living

  814. dependent on Christ

  815. and we're bearing fruit

  816. that is a lot

  817. like Christ.

  818. One more passage

  819. for you to turn to.

  820. John 13.

  821. And you know what?

  822. I can't wait

  823. to preach

  824. John 13.

  825. In John 13,

  826. 34, 35,

  827. a new commandment

  828. I give to you

  829. that you love

  830. one another

  831. just as I have loved you,

  832. you also are

  833. to love one another.

  834. By this all people

  835. will know

  836. that you are

  837. my disciples

  838. if you

  839. bite each other

  840. and beat each other

  841. up.

  842. No,

  843. if you have love

  844. for one another,

  845. Christ-like love

  846. for one another.

  847. You see,

  848. here's what happens.

  849. You receive

  850. eternal life.

  851. It's immediate.

  852. And then Jesus

  853. starts to change you.

  854. You stop living

  855. for yourself

  856. because you're like,

  857. that stinks.

  858. I don't like that.

  859. Jesus doesn't like that.

  860. And when you start

  861. living for Jesus,

  862. you're like,

  863. boy,

  864. this is really,

  865. I enjoy this.

  866. And then you start

  867. loving people

  868. the way that

  869. God in Christ

  870. has loved you.

  871. It is such

  872. a game changer.

  873. It changes

  874. the way

  875. that you treat

  876. people.

  877. Here's another way

  878. to say it.

  879. When you become

  880. a Christian

  881. and eternal life

  882. takes root

  883. in you,

  884. you go from

  885. being seeing

  886. people as

  887. what can I

  888. get

  889. to seeing

  890. people as

  891. how can I

  892. give them

  893. Jesus?

  894. What can I do

  895. for them to

  896. bring glory

  897. to Jesus?

  898. It's a radical

  899. change.

  900. This eternal

  901. life business,

  902. it's not

  903. some kind

  904. of add-on

  905. when you

  906. die.

  907. This radically

  908. reorients

  909. to who you

  910. live for.

  911. There's one

  912. more piece

  913. of this,

  914. of eternal

  915. life,

  916. and it's

  917. forever.

  918. We will be

  919. living with

  920. Jesus Christ

  921. as the

  922. controlling

  923. center of

  924. our lives

  925. forever.

  926. on this

  927. side of

  928. Christ's

  929. return,

  930. our experience

  931. of this

  932. eternal life

  933. is limited

  934. because of

  935. our sinfulness.

  936. We still

  937. sin,

  938. but when

  939. he comes

  940. back,

  941. we will

  942. be unencumbered

  943. by our

  944. own sinful

  945. nature and

  946. living in

  947. a creation

  948. that's been

  949. subjected

  950. to decay.

  951. It's going

  952. to be

  953. glorious.

  954. And just

  955. to help you

  956. make the

  957. connection,

  958. this is

  959. the effect

  960. of the

  961. authority

  962. of Jesus

  963. as both

  964. Savior and

  965. judge.

  966. When you

  967. believe his

  968. word,

  969. Jesus,

  970. who gives

  971. you the

  972. right to

  973. judge me?

  974. Look what

  975. he's able

  976. to do.

  977. The last

  978. area I want

  979. you to see

  980. about his

  981. authority

  982. is what he

  983. says about

  984. his authority,

  985. and that's the

  986. scope of his

  987. authority,

  988. and it's the

  989. last truly,

  990. truly in this

  991. passage.

  992. In verses

  993. 25-29,

  994. Jesus says,

  995. truly,

  996. truly,

  997. I say to

  998. you,

  999. an hour is

  1000. coming and

  1001. is now here

  1002. when the

  1003. dead will

  1004. hear the

  1005. voice of

  1006. the Son

  1007. of God

  1008. and those

  1009. who hear

  1010. will live.

  1011. Look down

  1012. at verse

  1013. 28.

  1014. Do not

  1015. marvel at

  1016. this,

  1017. for an

  1018. hour is

  1019. coming when

  1020. all who

  1021. are in

  1022. the tombs

  1023. will hear

  1024. his voice.

  1025. What Jesus

  1026. is doing

  1027. here is

  1028. he's like,

  1029. hey,

  1030. let me clue

  1031. you in on

  1032. reality.

  1033. Let me

  1034. bring you

  1035. into how

  1036. things really

  1037. are,

  1038. truly,

  1039. truly,

  1040. so be

  1041. it,

  1042. this is the

  1043. way it

  1044. is.

  1045. And then he

  1046. talks about

  1047. the scope

  1048. of his

  1049. authority in

  1050. terms of

  1051. two different

  1052. hours.

  1053. A now

  1054. hour and

  1055. a then

  1056. hour.

  1057. The now

  1058. hour is

  1059. verse 25,

  1060. the then

  1061. hour is

  1062. verse 28,

  1063. and they're

  1064. two different

  1065. hours.

  1066. hours.

  1067. So let's

  1068. look at the

  1069. now hour,

  1070. verse 25

  1071. to 27.

  1072. You can

  1073. also say

  1074. it's the

  1075. already

  1076. hour.

  1077. Truly,

  1078. truly,

  1079. I say to

  1080. you,

  1081. an hour is

  1082. coming.

  1083. There's,

  1084. let's see,

  1085. one,

  1086. two,

  1087. three,

  1088. four,

  1089. four words.

  1090. Can everybody

  1091. say those

  1092. four words

  1093. together?

  1094. Let me

  1095. just set

  1096. you up

  1097. again.

  1098. Truly,

  1099. truly,

  1100. I say to

  1101. you,

  1102. an hour is

  1103. coming and

  1104. is now

  1105. here.

  1106. the hour

  1107. has already

  1108. begun.

  1109. It's this

  1110. present age

  1111. we're living

  1112. in.

  1113. We're living

  1114. in the

  1115. now hour,

  1116. this present

  1117. age.

  1118. And then

  1119. Jesus starts

  1120. talking about

  1121. dead people

  1122. made alive.

  1123. When the

  1124. dead will

  1125. hear the

  1126. voice of

  1127. the Son

  1128. of God

  1129. and those

  1130. who hear

  1131. will live,

  1132. those who

  1133. hear will

  1134. pass from

  1135. death to

  1136. life.

  1137. Jesus is

  1138. talking,

  1139. not talking

  1140. about those

  1141. who are

  1142. physically

  1143. dead.

  1144. He's talking

  1145. about those

  1146. who are

  1147. spiritually

  1148. dead,

  1149. who are

  1150. living in

  1151. their sin.

  1152. When they

  1153. hear his

  1154. voice and

  1155. they believe

  1156. his word,

  1157. what he

  1158. says about

  1159. himself and

  1160. about his

  1161. father who

  1162. sent him and

  1163. why he

  1164. came,

  1165. when they

  1166. hear that

  1167. and they

  1168. believe that,

  1169. they pass

  1170. from death

  1171. to life.

  1172. And in

  1173. verses 26

  1174. through 27,

  1175. Jesus just

  1176. reiterates that

  1177. he's been

  1178. given the

  1179. authority to

  1180. live, to

  1181. give life,

  1182. 26, he's

  1183. the Son

  1184. of God, and

  1185. he has the

  1186. authority to

  1187. execute judgment

  1188. because he's

  1189. the Son of

  1190. Man.

  1191. These are two

  1192. huge titles.

  1193. The Son of

  1194. God is getting

  1195. at his

  1196. godness,

  1197. and the Son

  1198. of Man is

  1199. getting at his

  1200. executive

  1201. kingship.

  1202. It's coming

  1203. out of

  1204. Daniel chapter

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  1205. 7, where

  1206. we have the

  1207. Son of Man

  1208. who goes to

  1209. the Ancient

  1210. of Days,

  1211. and the Ancient

  1212. of Days gives

  1213. the Son of

  1214. Man a

  1215. kingdom that's

  1216. forever.

  1217. People from

  1218. every tribe,

  1219. tongue, and

  1220. nation are

  1221. part of this

  1222. kingdom, and

  1223. he will reign

  1224. over this

  1225. kingdom.

  1226. He determines

  1227. who's in and

  1228. who's out.

  1229. God.

  1230. So what we

  1231. have in the

  1232. now hour is

  1233. Jesus, who

  1234. is bringing

  1235. people from

  1236. death to

  1237. life by his

  1238. word.

  1239. Those, some,

  1240. he's giving

  1241. life because

  1242. he's God.

  1243. Others, he's

  1244. condemning to

  1245. eternal judgment

  1246. because he's the

  1247. Son of Man.

  1248. in other

  1249. words, Jesus

  1250. has all

  1251. authority right

  1252. now to

  1253. give eternal

  1254. life to

  1255. whoever he

  1256. sees fit, and

  1257. to condemn

  1258. all those who

  1259. reject him.

  1260. And it

  1261. raises a

  1262. question.

  1263. How is

  1264. Jesus speaking

  1265. now?

  1266. Well, now

  1267. he is speaking

  1268. through his

  1269. church.

  1270. When you

  1271. got a guy

  1272. like me who

  1273. is seeking

  1274. to faithfully

  1275. proclaim God's

  1276. word, it's

  1277. Jesus speaking.

  1278. Jesus speaking

  1279. through his

  1280. word.

  1281. When you

  1282. are talking

  1283. to someone

  1284. over coffee

  1285. about who

  1286. Jesus is,

  1287. why God

  1288. the Father

  1289. sent him,

  1290. he's speaking

  1291. his word.

  1292. Think of

  1293. the church

  1294. as God's

  1295. kingdom

  1296. embassy.

  1297. on earth.

  1298. We are

  1299. his

  1300. ambassadors

  1301. speaking his

  1302. words on

  1303. his behalf,

  1304. and those

  1305. who believe,

  1306. he brings

  1307. them from

  1308. death to

  1309. life.

  1310. And this

  1311. is all that's

  1312. happening in

  1313. the now

  1314. hour, the

  1315. already

  1316. hour.

  1317. And he

  1318. is speaking

  1319. all across

  1320. the globe

  1321. right now

  1322. to every

  1323. tribe, tongue,

  1324. and nation,

  1325. and he's

  1326. gathering

  1327. himself a

  1328. people who

  1329. all are

  1330. living with

  1331. him as the

  1332. controlling

  1333. center of

  1334. their lives.

  1335. That's the

  1336. now hour.

  1337. We're in it.

  1338. The then

  1339. hour is in

  1340. verses 28 and

  1341. 29, the

  1342. not yet

  1343. hour.

  1344. In verse

  1345. 28 we read

  1346. an hour is

  1347. coming, but

  1348. there's no

  1349. qualification to

  1350. it.

  1351. there is

  1352. and is now

  1353. here.

  1354. There's none

  1355. of that.

  1356. What he's

  1357. talking about

  1358. is an hour

  1359. yet to come,

  1360. the already

  1361. hour.

  1362. In Jesus,

  1363. in verse

  1364. 28 and

  1365. 29, what

  1366. he's getting

  1367. at is at

  1368. the end

  1369. of time,

  1370. there is

  1371. going to be

  1372. one great

  1373. judgment of

  1374. all people.

  1375. and he

  1376. starts talking

  1377. about

  1378. people who

  1379. were dead.

  1380. And now

  1381. he's talking

  1382. about people

  1383. who are

  1384. physically

  1385. dead.

  1386. It's all

  1387. people from

  1388. all time who

  1389. have died

  1390. and are in

  1391. the tombs,

  1392. in the grave.

  1393. Check this

  1394. out for power.

  1395. In one

  1396. utterance,

  1397. all who've

  1398. been dead

  1399. for all

  1400. time will

  1401. be raised

  1402. from the

  1403. dead to

  1404. judgment.

  1405. Do not

  1406. marvel at

  1407. this, for

  1408. an hour is

  1409. coming when

  1410. all who are

  1411. in the

  1412. tombs will

  1413. hear his

  1414. voice, the

  1415. voice of the

  1416. Son of God,

  1417. the voice of

  1418. the Son of

  1419. Man, God

  1420. incarnate.

  1421. They will

  1422. hear his

  1423. voice and

  1424. come out

  1425. of their

  1426. graves.

  1427. Those who

  1428. have done

  1429. good to

  1430. the resurrection

  1431. of life,

  1432. those who

  1433. have done

  1434. evil to

  1435. the resurrection

  1436. of the

  1437. dead.

  1438. And so

  1439. Jesus, at

  1440. the end

  1441. of the age,

  1442. will call

  1443. forth a

  1444. resurrection

  1445. of all,

  1446. and all

  1447. people will

  1448. be brought

  1449. to him,

  1450. before him,

  1451. and he will

  1452. not just

  1453. raise them

  1454. up, he

  1455. will then

  1456. divide them

  1457. out.

  1458. This is

  1459. Matthew 25.

  1460. When Jesus

  1461. comes back,

  1462. he will sit

  1463. on his

  1464. glorious throne,

  1465. and the

  1466. angels will

  1467. reap, and

  1468. all of

  1469. people will

  1470. be put in

  1471. front of

  1472. him, and

  1473. he will

  1474. separate them

  1475. out as

  1476. sheep from

  1477. the goats.

  1478. Judgment.

  1479. The first

  1480. group is

  1481. those who've

  1482. done good,

  1483. and they

  1484. will be

  1485. raised to

  1486. a resurrection

  1487. of life.

  1488. Think about

  1489. the good

  1490. that they're

  1491. doing.

  1492. It's not

  1493. good to

  1494. earn their

  1495. resurrection

  1496. to life.

  1497. It is the

  1498. good that

  1499. results from

  1500. Jesus giving

  1501. them eternal

  1502. life.

  1503. These are

  1504. the folks that

  1505. have born

  1506. fruit over

  1507. time that

  1508. is pleasing

  1509. to the

  1510. Father, and

  1511. they've been

  1512. raised up

  1513. unto the

  1514. resurrection of

  1515. eternal life.

  1516. They will

  1517. spend eternity

  1518. with Jesus.

  1519. The second

  1520. group are

  1521. those who've

  1522. been raised

  1523. from the

  1524. dead to

  1525. the resurrection

  1526. of judgment

  1527. because of the

  1528. evil they have

  1529. done, because

  1530. they have not

  1531. put their

  1532. trust in

  1533. Jesus.

  1534. They will

  1535. be condemned

  1536. forever.

  1537. The scope

  1538. of Jesus'

  1539. authority

  1540. authority is

  1541. now and

  1542. then.

  1543. He has

  1544. authority over

  1545. it all.

  1546. Jesus, what

  1547. gives you the

  1548. right to

  1549. judge me?

  1550. In these

  1551. three truly,

  1552. truly, I

  1553. say to you

  1554. statements,

  1555. Jesus makes

  1556. clear his

  1557. nature of

  1558. his authority,

  1559. the effect of

  1560. his authority,

  1561. the scope of

  1562. the authority,

  1563. and here's

  1564. the point.

  1565. Jesus is

  1566. both our

  1567. Savior and

  1568. our judge.

  1569. He's both

  1570. our Savior

  1571. and our

  1572. judge.

  1573. We need to

  1574. hold both of

  1575. those together.

  1576. So how do we

  1577. respond?

  1578. How do we

  1579. respond to

  1580. Jesus being

  1581. both Savior

  1582. and judge?

  1583. Well, if

  1584. you're a

  1585. non-believer

  1586. in the room,

  1587. if you've

  1588. yet to put

  1589. your faith

  1590. in Jesus,

  1591. if you've

  1592. yet to

  1593. submit to

  1594. him,

  1595. if you

  1596. haven't

  1597. taken his

  1598. words to

  1599. heart,

  1600. you need to

  1601. understand he

  1602. is ready to

  1603. rescue you.

  1604. He is

  1605. poised to

  1606. give you

  1607. eternal life.

  1608. He wants

  1609. to give you

  1610. eternal life.

  1611. life.

  1612. He wants

  1613. to cause

  1614. you to

  1615. go from

  1616. death

  1617. to life.

  1618. How can

  1619. he do

  1620. that?

  1621. Because as

  1622. God, he

  1623. died the

  1624. death that

  1625. you deserved.

  1626. And he

  1627. alone can

  1628. give you the

  1629. life you

  1630. are in such

  1631. desperate need

  1632. of.

  1633. life.

  1634. He offers

  1635. you this.

  1636. This life,

  1637. this immediate,

  1638. this secure,

  1639. this experiential,

  1640. this forever

  1641. life in a

  1642. relationship with

  1643. him.

  1644. So if you

  1645. haven't decided

  1646. to trust in

  1647. Jesus, let me

  1648. urge you to do

  1649. that.

  1650. This past

  1651. week I had a

  1652. conversation with

  1653. a young man,

  1654. and I love

  1655. this young man,

  1656. and I asked

  1657. him, hey,

  1658. have you put

  1659. your faith in

  1660. Jesus yet?

  1661. Have you become

  1662. a Christian yet?

  1663. He says, no,

  1664. and I'm like,

  1665. okay, why not?

  1666. And he goes,

  1667. I don't think

  1668. I'm ready.

  1669. I'm like, well,

  1670. when do you

  1671. know you're

  1672. ready?

  1673. And he's like,

  1674. I don't know.

  1675. So I asked

  1676. him, well, do

  1677. you believe this

  1678. gospel to be

  1679. true?

  1680. He said, yeah,

  1681. I believe it's

  1682. true.

  1683. I'm like, and

  1684. do you see your

  1685. need for the

  1686. gospel?

  1687. Do you see your

  1688. need to be

  1689. forgiven of your

  1690. sin?

  1691. He says, yes,

  1692. I do.

  1693. And then I

  1694. asked him, are

  1695. you willing?

  1696. And what I

  1697. meant by that

  1698. is, are you

  1699. willing to

  1700. stop living for

  1701. the things that

  1702. are the cause

  1703. of your death

  1704. and start

  1705. living for

  1706. Jesus as the

  1707. controlling center

  1708. of your life?

  1709. He wasn't

  1710. ready to answer.

  1711. Do you believe

  1712. this is true?

  1713. Do you see the

  1714. need in yourself?

  1715. are you willing to

  1716. come under his

  1717. authority?

  1718. That's the

  1719. question.

  1720. And when you're

  1721. ready, when you're

  1722. willing, at that

  1723. moment you believe

  1724. you will pass from

  1725. death to life.

  1726. And by the way,

  1727. if you're a

  1728. Christian, he is

  1729. your life.

  1730. John 15, your

  1731. vine.

  1732. So you respond to

  1733. him as Savior that

  1734. way, and what

  1735. about him being our

  1736. judge?

  1737. Now if you're a

  1738. Christian in the

  1739. room, you might have

  1740. some sweat on your

  1741. brow right now.

  1742. Wait, hold on a

  1743. second.

  1744. Hold on a second,

  1745. hold on a second,

  1746. hold on a second.

1747. Do I need to be

  1748. afraid of that?

  1749. Christian, you do

  1750. not need to be

  1751. afraid of being

  1752. condemned.

  1753. Because Jesus bore

  1754. all of God's wrath

  1755. for all of your

  1756. sin upon the

  1757. cross.

  1758. Because your

  1759. judge is your

  1760. Savior.

  1761. That's really good

  1762. news.

  1763. But you will still

  1764. stand before him.

  1765. 2 Corinthians 5.10,

  1766. we will all stand

  1767. before the judgment

  1768. seat of Christ.

  1769. And let me just

1770. urge you in light of

  1771. that.

  1772. Let me just compel

1773. you in light of the

  1774. parable of the

  1775. talents in Matthew

  1776. 24, to take what

  1777. God has entrusted to

  1778. you and to invest

  1779. it into what matters

  1780. most.

  1781. And what matters

  1782. most is kingdom, is

  1783. the glory of Jesus.

  1784. It's marveling at him

1785. in the honor due his

  1786. name.

  1787. Give yourself to that

  1788. Christian in light of

  1789. the judgment to come.

1790. You don't need to fear

  1791. your judge because he's

  1792. your Savior.

1793. But oh, seek to please

  1794. him now.

  1795. And if you're a non-Christian

1796. in the room, I just have a

  1797. question for you.

1798. Do you really want to

  1799. stand before the all

  1800. authoritative judge after

  1801. you've rejected him as

  1802. your Savior?

  1803. Savior?

  1804. You don't.

1805. So let me just urge you to

  1806. trust him now.

1807. This summer, we as a

  1808. nation will be celebrating

  1809. 250 years of independence,

  1810. our forefathers throwing

1811. off the yoke of King

  1812. George's tyranny.

1813. What gave you the right

  1814. King George?

1815. We don't throw off the

  1816. authority of Jesus

  1817. Christ.

  1818. He's our Savior and

  1819. judge.

1820. We, by faith, come under

  1821. his authority and we

  1822. live.

  1823. We experience this eternal

1824. life that Jesus died to

  1825. give us.

  1826. us.

1827. We throw off the tyranny

1828. of ruling our own lives

1829. so that he can rule us

1830. for the honor of his name.

  1831. Let's pray.

1832. Lord Jesus, would you have

  1833. your way in us?

1834. Would you cause us by your

  1835. spirit to experience this

1836. life in greater and greater

  1837. abundance?

1838. God, we want to live for

  1839. you.

1840. would you help us to put

  1841. aside the things that

1842. grieve you and live with

1843. you more and more as the

  1844. center of our lives?

1845. Because you are worthy of

  1846. that.

1847. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1848. Amen.
