  1. Would you mind turning in your Bible to John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 1065 of your pew Bible.

  3. ! And we've been out of the Gospel of John for a couple weeks,

  4. and now we're back into the Gospel of John.

  5. The series we've titled Behold, Believe, and Live.

  6. Behold Jesus, Believe in Jesus, and Live for Jesus.

  7. As you're turning there,

  8. you know, we live in a time of great mistrust and skepticism

  9. regarding leaders in general.

  10. Maybe you've lost confidence in the political leaders of our country.

  11. Well, the church is no exception.

  12. It seems every other month we learn of some Christian leader

  13. who has failed or has drifted or has undermined the Gospel,

  14. who've compromised themselves.

  15. A lot of Christians, even in this room,

  16. have been deeply hurt by compromised shepherds.

  17. Throughout the Bible, shepherding is used as a metaphor

  18. of leading God's people.

  19. Shepherd lead people.

  20. And we shepherds get to lead God's people, His flock.

  21. And throughout the Bible,

  22. God refers to Himself as a shepherd of His people.

  23. I mean, Steve started off this morning,

  24. called us to worship in Psalm 23.1,

  25. The Lord is my shepherd.

  26. And what we're going to see from Ezekiel 34 this morning

  27. is that God is going to claim that title again,

  28. but in the context of a rebuke.

  29. In the New Testament, Jesus, God incarnate,

  30. is described as the great shepherd of the sheep.

  31. It's Hebrews 13.20.

  32. He is the chief shepherd, 1 Peter 5.4.

  33. And in our passage this morning, in John 10,

  34. Jesus calls Himself the good shepherd.

  35. So, I want to help us ask and answer this question this morning.

  36. What is so good about this good shepherd?

  37. What's so good about this good shepherd?

  38. And what difference will that make for us today?

  39. Throughout the passage we're going to be looking at,

  40. verses 1 through 21,

  41. there's this running contrast

  42. between the failed leaders of Israel,

  43. the Pharisees,

  44. and the good shepherd,

  45. the leadership of Jesus.

  46. And what I want to help you to see this morning

  47. are three truths that Jesus claims about His leadership

  48. that should make you fully trust Him.

  49. And here they are.

  50. Truth number one,

  51. He is the legit shepherd.

  52. Truth number two,

  53. He is the purposed shepherd.

  54. And truth number three,

  55. He is the committed shepherd.

  56. So, legit, purposed, committed.

  57. And all of these come together

  58. to make Him the good shepherd.

  59. And what you're going to see

  60. is that His goodness runs red.

  61. So, let's look at this first truth

  62. that Jesus speaks of Himself.

  63. What we're going to take is kind of piece by piece,

  64. make our way through this passage.

  65. And now I'm going to read John 10, 1 through 6.

  66. Let's look at this first truth

  67. where Jesus describes Himself

  68. as the legit shepherd.

  69. Jesus begins,

  70. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  71. He who does not enter the sheepfold by the door,

  72. but climbs in by another way,

  73. that man is a thief and a robber.

  74. But he who enters by the door

  75. is the shepherd of the sheep.

  76. To him the gatekeeper opens,

  77. the sheep hear His voice,

  78. and He calls His own sheep by name

  79. and leads them out.

  80. When He has brought out all His own,

  81. He goes before them,

  82. and the sheep follow Him

  83. for they know His voice.

  84. A stranger they will not follow,

  85. but they will flee from Him

  86. for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  87. This figure of speech Jesus used with them,

  88. but they did not understand

  89. what He was saying to them.

  90. Who?

  91. Verse 6.

  92. Who are these them, they, them?

  93. We need to understand

  94. who Jesus is speaking to.

  95. In chapter 9, Jesus heals this man born blind.

  96. And it climaxes at the end of verse 9

  97. where this man who now sees,

  98. sees Jesus for the first time,

  99. and he says,

  100. Lord, I believe,

  101. and he worships Him.

  102. But then in verse 39,

  103. we read,

  104. Jesus said,

  105. For judgment I came into this world,

  106. that those who do not see me

  107. may see, may see,

  108. and those who see may become blind.

  109. Some of the Pharisees near Him

  110. heard these things and said to Him,

  111. Are we also blind?

  112. And Jesus said to them,

  113. If you were blind,

  114. you would have no guilt,

  115. but now that you say,

  116. we see,

  117. your guilt remains.

  118. Now let's just pretend

  119. there's no chapter break.

  120. But now that you see,

  121. say we see,

  122. your guilt remains.

  123. Truly, truly,

  124. I say to you,

  125. do you know who the you is?

  126. The Pharisees.

  127. Jesus is speaking these words

  128. to the failed religious leaders

  129. of Israel.

  130. And so what we have before us

  131. is a bit of a confrontation

  132. between Jesus

  133. and the failed leaders

  134. of Israel.

  135. This is a passage about leadership,

  136. believe it or not.

  137. Truly, truly,

  138. I say to you,

  139. Jesus says,

  140. we've bumped into this phrase,

  141. truly, truly,

  142. I say to you,

  143. a number of times

  144. in the Gospel of John,

  145. and what Jesus is doing

  146. is simply setting

  147. the record straight.

  148. He's like,

  149. listen up,

  150. let me just lay it clear

  151. for you.

  152. And He starts

  153. by painting a picture

  154. of a sheepfold.

  155. He says,

  156. He who does not enter

  157. the sheepfold,

  158. what is a sheepfold?

  159. A sheepfold is like

  160. a sheep pen,

  161. a sheep corral.

  162. It's basically

  163. a kind of

  164. a walled-in enclosure,

  165. a fenced-in enclosure

  166. to bring sheep in

  167. during the night

  168. to keep them safe.

  169. And the enclosure,

  170. sometimes sides

  171. of buildings were used,

  172. other times they'd weave

  173. like sticks and branches

  174. and they'd bring them

  175. really high

  176. so that nobody could get in

  177. and the sheep couldn't get out.

  178. And it only had one door.

  179. Only one way in

  180. and one way out.

  181. And it's here

  182. that He begins the contrast.

  183. Look what He says.

  184. He who does not enter

  185. the sheepfold by the door

  186. but climbs in

  187. by another way,

  188. that man is a thief

  189. and a robber.

  190. Who is He talking to?

  191. The Pharisees.

  192. Do you know what He's

  193. saying to them?

  194. You're trying to come

  195. into the sheep pen

  196. kind of like

  197. in an illegitimate way,

  198. thief and robber.

  199. What He's contrasting

  200. is illegitimate leaders.

  201. And so He begins

  202. this contrast.

  203. Illegitimate people

  204. trying to access

  205. the sheep

  206. and they've got

  207. ill intent.

  208. They're thieves and robbers.

  209. They don't go through the gate.

  210. But in verse 2,

  211. the legitimate shepherd

  212. is known.

  213. He's recognized.

  214. He's trusted.

  215. But he who enters

  216. by the door

  217. is the shepherd

  218. of the sheep.

  219. To him,

  220. the gatekeeper opens.

  221. He's like an under-shepherd.

  222. He's kind of working

  223. the door

  224. of the sheepfold.

  225. Recognizes that

  226. this guy's legit.

  227. The sheep hear His voice

  228. and He calls

  229. His own sheep by name

  230. and leads them out.

  231. He's legit.

  232. The sheep recognize Him.

  233. They trust Him.

  234. They hear Him

  235. call their names

  236. and they follow Him.

  237. They go after Him.

  238. Literally,

  239. He calls them by name.

  240. He knows His sheep.

  241. He's recognized.

  242. He's legitimate.

  243. Did you notice

  244. the kind of language

  245. Jesus is using here?

  246. He's saying,

  247. to Him the gatekeeper opens,

  248. the sheep hear His voice,

  249. and He calls His own sheep

  250. by name.

  251. His own sheep by name.

  252. The shepherd,

  253. obviously,

  254. is Jesus referring to Himself.

  255. He knows His own sheep.

  256. He calls them by name.

  257. Christian,

  258. if you're in the room

  259. and you've been like,

  260. does Jesus know me?

  261. Absolutely.

  262. He knows everything about you.

  263. He knows your name.

  264. He called you by name

  265. to follow Him.

  266. You are not some nameless face

  267. in a crowd

  268. that Jesus poured out His blood

  269. generally for.

  270. He shed His blood for you.

  271. His goodness runs red.

  272. What He says here is striking.

  273. He's saying something

  274. with clarity and confidence.

  275. He's saying,

  276. my sheep will recognize

  277. my voice.

  278. This is getting at

  279. what theologians call

  280. the irresistible call.

  281. There's the general gospel call,

  282. which the gospel goes out

  283. to people,

  284. all people,

  285. and then God

  286. effectually

  287. is working within that

  288. to call a people

  289. and the elect

  290. to Himself.

  291. those He's known

  292. from the foundation

  293. before the foundation

  294. of the world.

  295. His voice

  296. is recognized.

  297. It's distinct.

  298. It's known.

  299. We've learned some things

  300. about Jesus

  301. along the way here.

  302. Remember John 1,

  303. 1,

  304. in the beginning

  305. was the Word

  306. and the Word

  307. was with God

  308. and the Word

  309. was God

  310. and the Word

  311. became flesh

  312. and dwelt among us

  313. and He was full

  314. of grace and truth.

  315. He's full of steadfast

  316. love and faithfulness.

  317. He puts on God,

  318. God on display

  319. in an incarnate way.

  320. It's glorious.

  321. And then at the end

  322. of chapter 8,

  323. do you remember

  324. what Jesus says

  325. before Abraham

  326. was I am?

  327. Do you know

  328. what makes Jesus

  329. the legit shepherd?

  330. He's God.

  331. He is the God.

  332. So like Psalm 23,

  333. the Lord Jesus

  334. is my shepherd.

  335. I shall not want.

  336. He's the real thing.

  337. In verse 5,

  338. Jesus comes back

  339. to the contrast.

  340. He says,

  341. a stranger

  342. they will not follow

  343. but they will flee from Him

  344. for they do not know

  345. the voice of strangers.

  346. A stranger

  347. is unrecognized,

  348. unknown,

  349. untrusted.

  350. Do you see

  351. the contrast

  352. Jesus is doing here?

  353. And do you remember

  354. who He's talking to?

  355. He's talking to these Pharisees

  356. who He's calling thieves

  357. and robbers

  358. and strangers.

  359. Unrecognized

  360. by the sheep.

  361. His sheep.

  362. The sheep won't follow

  363. a stranger.

  364. They don't know

  365. His voice.

  366. They're illegitimate

  367. shepherds.

  368. And so what Jesus

  369. is doing in verses

  370. 1-5

  371. is emphasizing

  372. that He is

  373. the legit leader

  374. of God's people.

  375. The legit shepherd

  376. because He is

  377. God in the flesh.

  378. He's no thief,

  379. robber,

  380. or stranger.

  381. His sheep

  382. recognize them.

  383. And then verse 6

  384. we have something

  385. very ironic.

  386. The sheep

  387. read this.

  388. This is John

  389. piping up.

  390. This figure of speech

  391. Jesus used

  392. with them,

  393. the Pharisees,

  394. but they did not

  395. understand what

  396. He was saying to them.

  397. Now isn't that ironic?

  398. Because His sheep

  399. will hear His voice

  400. and follow Him.

  401. But these men

  402. do not hear His voice.

  403. They are not

  404. following Him.

  405. They are not His sheep.

  406. Who would you rather

  407. have as your leader?

  408. A thief,

  409. robber,

  410. stranger,

  411. or God incarnate?

  412. We move on

  413. to the second truth

  414. Jesus

  415. describes Himself

  416. with

  417. about Him

  418. and

  419. the purposed

  420. shepherd.

  421. So let me just read

  422. chapter 10

  423. verses 7-10.

  424. And Jesus said

  425. to them,

  426. Truly,

  427. truly,

  428. I say to you,

  429. I am the door

  430. of the sheep.

  431. All who came

  432. before Me

  433. are thieves

  434. and robbers,

  435. but the sheep

  436. did not listen

  437. to them.

  438. I am the door.

  439. If anyone enters

  440. by Me,

  441. he will be saved

  442. and will go in

  443. and out

  444. and find pasture.

  445. The thief comes

  446. only to steal

  447. and kill

  448. and destroy.

  449. I came

  450. that they

  451. may have life

  452. and have it

  453. abundantly.

  454. So the second truth

  455. is about

  456. the purpose

  457. of the good shepherd.

  458. And verse 7

  459. begins with another,

  460. Truly,

  461. truly,

  462. I say to you,

  463. and again,

  464. He's speaking

  465. to the Pharisees.

  466. And so it's like

  467. Jesus is like,

  468. I know you don't

  469. understand Me,

  470. so I'm going to

  471. come in from

  472. a different angle.

  473. I'm going to

  474. speak from

  475. the perspective

  476. of the door

  477. of the sheep pen.

  478. perspective of

  479. the gate,

  480. the sole entrance

  481. in and out

  482. of the sheep fold.

  483. Now,

  484. let's just

  485. ask a basic question.

  486. What is the purpose

  487. of a door?

  488. What's the purpose

  489. of a gate?

  490. The purpose

  491. of a door

  492. or gate

  493. is,

  494. generally speaking,

  495. to keep

  496. bad things out

  497. and keep

  498. good things in.

  499. I have a grandson.

  500. His name is Hudson.

  501. He's 18 months old.

  502. He's mobile.

  503. We have a fenced

  504. backyard.

  505. We keep the gate

  506. closed.

  507. We don't want

  508. anybody coming in

  509. that shouldn't be there

  510. and we don't want

  511. Hudson getting out.

  512. A door serves

  513. a purpose.

  514. And what we have here

  515. is Jesus describing

  516. Himself as a purpose,

  517. a function.

  518. Jesus

  519. is presenting

  520. Himself as the door

  521. that both

  522. protects

  523. the sheep

  524. and provides

  525. for the sheep.

  526. Let me point it out

  527. to you.

  528. In verse 8,

  529. there's this picture

  530. of protection.

  531. Let me read it.

  532. All who came

  533. before me

  534. are thieves

  535. and robbers,

  536. but the sheep

  537. did not listen

  538. to them.

  539. I want you

  540. to turn

  541. to your Bibles

  542. to Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 34 chapter mention

  543. chapter 34.

  544. It's on page

  545. 857

  546. of your pew Bible.

  547. This is kind of

  548. a lengthy section

  549. I'm going to read,

  550. but I'm going to read it

  551. so you get it.

  552. What Jesus

  553. is saying here

  554. has roots

  555. in Ezekiel 34

  556. that you will see.

  557. So in Ezekiel 34,

  558. God speaks

  559. to Ezekiel

  560. who also goes

  561. by the Son of Man.

  562. And in 34.1

  563. we read this.

  564. The word of the Lord

  565. came to me.

  566. Son of Man,

  567. prophesy against

  568. the shepherds

  569. of Israel,

  570. the human leaders

  571. of Israel.

  572. Prophesy and say

  573. to them,

  574. even to the shepherds,

  575. thus says

  576. the Lord God,

  577. ah, shepherds

  578. of Israel

  579. who have been

  580. feeding yourselves.

  581. Should not shepherds

  582. feed the sheep?

  583. You eat the fat.

  584. You clothe yourself

  585. with the wool.

  586. You slaughter the fat ones

  587. but you do not

  588. feed the sheep.

  589. The weak

  590. you have not strengthened.

  591. The sick

  592. you have not healed.

  593. The injured

  594. you have not bound up.

  595. The strayed

  596. you have not brought back.

  597. The lost

  598. you have not sought.

  599. And with force

  600. and harshness

  601. you have ruled them.

  602. Maybe you've experienced

  603. a human shepherd's

  604. force and harshness.

  605. So they were scattered

  606. because there was no shepherd

  607. and they became food

  608. for all the wild beasts.

  609. My sheep were scattered.

  610. They wandered over

  611. all the mountains

  612. and on every high hill.

  613. My sheep were scattered

  614. over the face of the earth

  615. with no one to search

  616. or seek for them.

  617. And down in verse 9

  618. he says,

  619. therefore you shepherds

  620. hear the word of the Lord.

  621. Thus says the Lord God,

  622. behold,

  623. I am against the shepherds.

  624. And I will require

  625. my sheep at their hand

  626. and put a stop

  627. to their feeding the sheep.

  628. No longer shall

  629. the shepherds

  630. feed themselves.

  631. I will rescue

  632. my sheep from

  633. their mouths

  634. that they may not

  635. be food for them.

  636. Okay, so this is a big rebuke

  637. of the human shepherds

  638. of Israel.

  639. They've failed.

  640. And then God says

  641. in verse 11,

  642. for thus says

  643. the Lord God,

  644. behold,

  645. I myself

  646. will search for my sheep

  647. and will seek them out.

  648. as a shepherd

  649. seeks out his flock

  650. when he is among his sheep

  651. that have been scattered,

  652. so will I

  653. seek out my sheep

  654. and I will rescue them

  655. from all the places

  656. where they've been scattered

  657. on a day of clouds

  658. and thick darkness.

  659. And I will bring them

  660. out from the peoples

  661. and gather them

  662. from the countries

  663. and will bring them

  664. into their own land

  665. and I will feed them

  666. on the mountains of Israel

  667. by the ravines

  668. and on all the inhabited

  669. places of the country.

  670. I will feed them

  671. with good pasture.

  672. How about that

  673. for a contrast?

  674. You know what God is saying?

  675. I am the shepherd

  676. of my people.

  677. There's no accident

  678. in Jesus using

  679. this shepherding language

  680. with the Pharisees.

  681. He is calling them

  682. failed shepherds

  683. without calling them shepherds.

  684. These Pharisees

  685. are thieves and robbers.

  686. They're strangers.

  687. And Jesus is the gate.

  688. And he is protecting

  689. his sheep

  690. from these thieves and robbers.

  691. From going out

  692. and following them.

  693. From hearing their voice.

  694. They don't recognize it.

  695. They're not going to go.

  696. So,

  697. what we see going on

  698. in John 10

  699. is this fulfillment

  700. of Ezekiel 34

  701. happening in the coming

  702. of Jesus.

  703. In verse 9,

  704. he says,

  705. I am the door.

  706. And now we have

  707. a picture of provision.

  708. Not only is he just

  709. protecting his flock

  710. as the gate,

  711. he's providing for them.

  712. Look what he provides.

  713. Verse 10,

  714. the thief,

  715. no, excuse me,

  716. verse 9,

  717. if anyone enters by me,

  718. he will be saved.

  719. If anyone comes

  720. into the sheepfold

  721. through him,

  722. he will be saved.

  723. The sheepfold

  724. is his people.

  725. The flock of Jesus,

  726. the good shepherd.

  727. And if you want

  728. to be part of his people,

  729. you need to come

  730. through Jesus.

  731. It's similar

  732. to what he says

  733. in John 14, 6.

  734. I am the way,

  735. the truth,

  736. and the life.

  737. No one comes

  738. to the Father

  739. but through me.

  740. Jesus is saying,

  741. hey,

  742. you cannot be saved

  743. unless you come

  744. through me.

  745. I'm the gate.

  746. And the way

  747. that you come

  748. through Jesus

  749. as the gate

  750. is by believing

  751. in his name,

  752. by trusting in him.

  753. This is an exclusive

  754. claim of salvation.

  755. Salvation is found

  756. in no one else.

  757. The only way

  758. to be saved

  759. is to become

  760. part of Jesus' flock

  761. and to be part

  762. of Jesus' flock,

  763. you need to come

  764. through Jesus.

  765. But once you

  766. join his flock,

  767. you come in

  768. and out

  769. and find pasture.

  770. You know what

  771. that's a picture of?

  772. Life.

  773. If you're a sheep,

  774. it's a picture

  775. of the good life.

  776. You come in

  777. and out in safety.

  778. You eat green

  779. from green pasture.

  780. The Lord Jesus

  781. is my shepherd.

  782. I shall not want.

  783. He leads me

  784. besides still waters.

  785. He leads me

  786. to good pasture.

  787. He restores my soul.

  788. In verse 10,

  789. we have this

  790. emphatic contrast

  791. of purpose.

  792. Look at the purpose

  793. of these failed shepherds.

  794. The thief comes only

  795. to steal and kill

  796. and destroy.

  797. What's the purpose?

  798. Kill,

  799. steal,

  800. destroy.

  801. These failed shepherds

  802. are in it for themselves.

  803. They're using the sheep.

  804. They're trying to

  805. advantage themselves

  806. through the sheep.

  807. But look at

  808. what the legit shepherd does.

  809. He says of himself,

  810. I came

  811. that they may have life

  812. and have it abundantly.

  813. It's the complete opposite

  814. of what thieves

  815. and robbers do.

  816. He came to give life

  817. and to give abundant life.

  818. It's his purpose

  819. and it's being pictured

  820. as dependent

  821. on Jesus.

  822. We're dependent

  823. on him

  824. for the good life.

  825. He's the one.

  826. He's the gate.

  827. He's the shepherd.

  828. He brings us in and out

  829. and helps us find pastures.

  830. The good life

  831. is in Jesus,

  832. the good shepherd.

  833. Let me just

  834. expand on that

  835. a little bit.

  836. The good life

  837. is a life

  838. that glorifies God.

  839. And it's not a life

  840. of independence

  841. from God.

  842. It's a life

  843. of dependence

  844. on God.

  845. Later in John,

  846. we'll get there

  847. in a few weeks,

  848. John 15,

  849. Jesus pictures

  850. another way

  851. of talking

  852. about dependence.

  853. He says

  854. in verse 5,

  855. I am the vine,

  856. you are the branches.

  857. Whoever abides in me

  858. depends on me

  859. and I in him.

  860. He it is

  861. that bears much fruit

  862. for apart from me

  863. you can do nothing.

  864. And then in verse 8

  865. we read,

  866. by this my father

  867. is glorified

  868. that you bear much fruit.

  869. and so prove

  870. to be my disciples.

  871. That's the good life.

  872. Dependence on Jesus,

  873. bearing fruit

  874. for his name's sake,

  875. bringing glory

  876. to his father.

  877. So what we have here

  878. in verses 7 through 10

  879. is a contrast

  880. of purpose.

  881. We have these

  882. illegitimate leaders

  883. who are thieves

  884. and robbers,

  885. self-serving

  886. at the cost

  887. of the sheep,

  888. destruction,

  889. killing,

  890. stealing.

  891. And then we have

  892. the legitimate shepherd

  893. who is sheep-serving.

  894. He brings life

  895. to his sheep.

  896. Abundant life.

  897. The good life.

  898. A life of dependence

  899. on God.

  900. What would you rather have

  901. from a lever?

  902. Abuse

  903. or abundant life?

  904. which brings me now

  905. to the third truth

  906. that Jesus speaks

  907. of himself.

  908. And this is in verses

  909. 11 through 18

  910. and I'm using

  911. the word commitment.

  912. The committed shepherd.

  913. So we've seen

  914. Jesus speak

  915. about him

  916. being legit,

  917. about him being

  918. purposed

  919. to give life.

  920. And now let's

  921. look at how

  922. he kind of

  923. spells out

  924. his commitment

  925. to his own.

  926. in verse 11

  927. he says

  928. I am the good shepherd.

  929. And then if you look

  930. down in verse 14

  931. he repeats it.

  932. I am

  933. the good shepherd.

  934. What is so good

  935. about this

  936. good shepherd?

  937. What

  938. what's his goodness?

  939. What we're going to see

  940. is that

  941. his goodness

  942. runs

  943. red.

  944. in verse 12

  945. he continues

  946. with this

  947. contrast

  948. between leaders

  949. and he

  950. he changes

  951. his language

  952. now.

  953. He's no longer

  954. talking about

  955. thieves and robbers

  956. or strangers.

  957. He's talking

  958. about a hired

  959. hand.

  960. And so he

  961. says this

  962. he who

  963. in verse 12

  964. he who is

  965. a hired

  966. hand

  967. and not

  968. a shepherd

  969. who does not

  970. own the sheep

  971. sees the wolf

  972. coming and leaves

  973. the sheep

  974. and flees

  975. and the wolf

  976. snatches them

  977. and scatters

  978. them.

  979. He flees

  980. because he's

  981. a hired

  982. hand

  983. and cares

  984. nothing

  985. for the sheep.

  986. A hired

  987. hand

  988. is not

  989. a shepherd

  990. Jesus says.

  991. In other words

  992. he doesn't own

  993. the sheep.

  994. He's just been

  995. hired

  996. to make a

  997. wage.

  998. And what

  999. Jesus points

  1000. here in

  1001. verses 12

  1002. and 13

  1003. is that

  1004. this hired

  1005. hand

  1006. is out

  1007. with the

  1008. sheep

  1009. and he

  1010. sees a

  1011. wolf

  1012. coming

  1013. and what

  1014. does the

  1015. hired

  1016. hand

  1017. do?

  1018. He splits

  1019. and leaves

  1020. the sheep.

  1021. He abandons

  1022. the sheep.

  1023. And if

  1024. you've been

  1025. around sheep

  1026. which I try

  1027. not to be

  1028. I'm not one

  1029. who likes

  1030. sheep

  1031. or goats

  1032. but sheep

  1033. they're

  1034. defenseless

  1035. beast.

  1036. Easy

  1037. pickings

  1038. for a

  1039. wolf.

  1040. And so

  1041. what this

  1042. hired

  1043. hand

  1044. does

  1045. is

  1046. in

  1047. order

  1048. to

  1049. save

  1050. his

  1051. own

  1052. skin

  1053. he

  1054. leaves

  1055. the

  1056. sheep

  1057. these

  1058. vulnerable

  1059. animals

  1060. to fend

  1061. for

  1062. themselves

  1063. and

  1064. they

  1065. will

  1066. not

  1067. last.

  1068. I mean

  1069. look what

  1070. we read

  1071. and the

  1072. wolf

  1073. snatches

  1074. them

  1075. and

  1076. scatters

  1077. them.

  1078. Why?

  1079. Why would

  1080. they do

  1081. this?

  1082. Why would

  1083. they bail

  1084. on the

  1085. sheep?

  1086. Well Jesus

  1087. tells us

  1088. in verse

  1089. 13

  1090. he flees

  1091. because

  1092. he's a

  1093. hired

  1094. hand

  1095. and

  1096. cares

  1097. nothing

  1098. for

  1099. the

  1100. sheep.

  1101. He cares

  1102. for himself.

  1103. Now remember

  1104. who Jesus

  1105. is talking

  1106. to.

  1107. He's talking

  1108. to Pharisees.

  1109. And what

  1110. Jesus in a

  1111. veiled way

  1112. is saying

  1113. to them

  1114. is he's

  1115. calling them

  1116. selfish

  1117. and cowardly.

  1118. because

  1119. they're not

  1120. willing to

  1121. stick around

  1122. for his

  1123. sheep.

  1124. And in

  1125. contrast to

  1126. that we

  1127. learn that

  1128. the good

  1129. shepherd

  1130. verse 11

  1131. lays his

  1132. life down

  1133. for the

  1134. sheep.

  1135. It's the

  1136. complete

  1137. opposite.

  1138. Verse 14

  1139. we're told

  1140. why.

  1141. I'm the

  1142. good shepherd.

  1143. I know

  1144. my own

  1145. and my

  1146. own

  1147. know

  1148. me.

  1149. I

  1150. know

  1151. those

  1152. who are

  1153. mine

  1154. from before

  1155. the

  1156. foundation

  1157. of the

  1158. world.

  1159. I

  1160. know

  1161. them.

  1162. I

  1163. go out

  1164. for them.

  1165. I

  1166. die

  1167. for

  1168. them.

  1169. The

  1170. question

  1171. is what

  1172. does it

  1173. mean

  1174. for him

  1175. to

  1176. know?

  1177. I

  1178. know

  1179. my

  1180. own

  1181. and

  1182. my

  1183. own

  1184. know

  1185. me.

  1186. Look

  1187. at the

  1188. beginning

  1189. of

  1190. 15.

  1191. He

  1192. actually

  1193. gives

  1194. us an

  1195. analogy

  1196. of what

  1197. this

  1198. knowing

  1199. is.

  1200. So he

  1201. says at

  1202. the end

  1203. of

  1204. verse 14

  1205. I'm

  1206. the

  1207. good

  1208. shepherd.

  1209. I

  1210. know

  1211. my

  1212. own

  1213. know

  1214. me.

  1215. What

  1216. kind

  1217. of

  1218. knowing?

  1219. Just

  1220. as the

  1221. father

  1222. knows

  1223. me

  1224. and I

  1225. know

  1226. the

  1227. father.

  1228. It

  1229. is a

  1230. relational

  1231. knowing.

  1232. It

  1233. is a

  1234. loving

  1235. of one

  1236. another.

  1237. If

  1238. you

  1239. swap

  1240. out

  1241. the

  1242. word

  1243. know

  1244. with

  1245. love

  1246. listen

  1247. to

  1248. that.

  1249. We

  1250. read

  1251. it.

  1252. I'm

  1253. the

  1254. good

  1255. shepherd.

  1256. I

  1257. love

  1258. my

  1259. own

  1260. and

  1261. my

  1262. own

  1263. love

  1264. me.

  1265. Just

  1266. as

  1267. the

  1268. father

  1269. loves

  1270. me

  1271. and

  1272. I

  1273. love

  1274. the

  1275. father.

  1276. This

  1277. kind

  1278. of

  1279. knowing

  1280. that

  1281. Jesus

  1282. is

  1283. speaking

  1284. about

  1285. here

  1286. is

  1287. an

  1288. intimate

  1289. relational

  1290. knowing

  1291. like

  1292. I

  1293. know

  1294. you

  1295. by

  1296. name

  1297. and

  1298. I

  1299. love

  1300. you.

  1301. I'm

  1302. committed

  1303. to

  1304. you.

  1305. That's

  1306. why

  1307. this

  1308. good

  1309. shepherd

  1310. lays

  1311. his

  1312. life

  1313. down

  1314. for

  1315. his

  1316. sheep.

  1317. He

  1318. knows

  1319. he

  1320. loves

  1321. his

  1322. sheep.

  1323. It's

  1324. an

  1325. intimate

  1326. knowledge.

  1327. And so

  1328. out of

  1329. love

  1330. for

  1331. his

  1332. own

  1333. Jesus

  1334. laid

  1335. his

  1336. life

  1337. down.

  1338. His

  1339. goodness

  1340. runs

  1341. red.

  1342. Verse

  1343. 16

  1344. we have

  1345. a bit

  1346. of a

  1347. surprise.

  1348. We

  1349. read

  1350. and I

  1351. have

  1352. other

  1353. sheep

  1354. that

  1355. are

  1356. not

  1357. of

  1358. this

  1359. fold.

  1360. Huh?

  1361. What are

  1362. you

  1363. talking

  1364. about?

  1365. I

  1366. must

  1367. bring

  1368. them

  1369. also

  1370. and

  1371. they

  1372. will

  1373. listen

  1374. to

  1375. my

  1376. voice.

  1377. So

  1378. there

  1379. will

  1380. be

  1381. one

  1382. flock

  1383. one

  1384. shepherd.

  1385. So

  1386. Jesus

  1387. is

  1388. in

  1389. Jerusalem.

  1390. He's

  1391. talking

  1392. to

  1393. the

  1394. Pharisees.

  1395. He's

  1396. in a

  1397. Jewish

  1398. context

  1399. and

  1400. he's

  1401. saying

  1402. to

  1403. them

  1404. I've

  1405. got

  1406. other

  1407. sheep

  1408. that

  1409. are

  1410. not

  1411. in

  1412. the

  1413. Jewish

  1414. fold

  1415. that

  1416. are

  1417. not

  1418. ethnically

  1419. Jewish.

  1420. Do you

  1421. know

  1422. who he's

  1423. talking

  1424. about?

  1425. Gentiles.

  1426. I

  1427. have

  1428. sheep

  1429. from

  1430. the

  1431. Gentile

  1432. world.

  1433. That's

  1434. good

  1435. for

  1436. us

  1437. a

  1438. room

  1439. full

  1440. of

  1441. Gentiles.

  1442. He

  1443. would

  1444. come

  1445. for

  1446. us.

  1447. And

  1448. so

  1449. what

  1450. he's

  1451. saying

  1452. here

  1453. this

  1454. surprise

  1455. is

  1456. that

  1457. he

  1458. has

  1459. a

  1460. mission

  1461. that

  1462. goes

  1463. well

  1464. beyond

  1465. the

  1466. Jewish

  1467. people

  1468. to

  1469. every

  1470. nation

  1471. of

  1472. the

  1473. world.

  1474. Every

  1475. tongue

  1476. every

  1477. tribe

  1478. every

  1479. nation

  1480. he

  1481. has

  1482. people

  1483. he

  1484. has

  1485. sheep

  1486. that

  1487. he

  1488. has

  1489. died

  1490. for

  1491. that

  1492. he's

  1493. going

  1494. to

  1495. call

  1496. to

  1497. himself

  1498. and

  1499. he's

  1500. going

  1501. to

  1502. bring

  1503. together

  1504. in

  1505. one

  1506. flock

  1507. with

  1508. one

  1509. shepherd

  1510. it

  1511. is

  1512. a

  1513. multi

  1514. ethnic

  1515. flock

  1516. with

  1517. Jesus

  1518. our

  1519. good

  1520. shepherd

  1521. his

  1522. big

  1523. plan

  1524. for

  1525. the

  1526. fullness

  1527. of

  1528. time

  1529. is

  1530. to

  1531. save

  1532. many

  1533. from

  1534. every

  1535. tongue

  1536. tribe

  1537. and

  1538. nation

  1539. and

  1540. then

  1541. to

  1542. unite

  1543. them

  1544. all

  1545. together

  1546. to

  1547. follow

  1548. him

  1549. our

  1550. good

  1551. shepherd

  1552. this

  1553. is a

  1554. beautiful

  1555. thing

  1556. he's

  1557. saying

  1558. you

  1559. know

  1560. what

  1561. my

  1562. hope

  1563. is

  1564. for

  1565. VBS

  1566. in

  1567. August

  1568. I

  1569. hope

  1570. a

  1571. whole

  1572. bunch

  1573. of

  1574. people

  1575. get

  1576. saved

  1577. that's

  1578. what

  1579. I'm

  1580. praying

  1581. and

  1582. I'm

  1583. praying

  1584. that

  1585. a

  1586. whole

  1587. bunch

  1588. of

  1589. people

  1590. who

  1591. are

  1592. white

  1593. brown

  1594. and

  1595. black

  1596. get

  1597. saved

  1598. and

  1599. people

  1600. who

  1601. are

  1602. children

  1603. and

  1604. adults

  1605. and

  1606. that

  1607. they

  1608. find

  1609. themselves

  1610. in

  1611. this

  1612. room

  1613. with

  1614. us

  1615. and

  1616. we

  1617. get

  1618. to

  1619. unite

  1620. together

  1621. as

  1622. one

  1623. flock

  1624. with

  1625. one

  1626. shepherd

  1627. the

  1628. good

  1629. shepherd

  1630. who

  1631. laid

  1632. his

  1633. life

  1634. down

  1635. for

  1636. us

  1637. all

  1638. his

  1639. goodness

  1640. runs

  1641. red

  1642. in

  1643. verse

  1644. 17

  1645. we're

  1646. told

  1647. that

  1648. Jesus

  1649. says

  1650. this is

  1651. the

  1652. reason

  1653. the

  1654. father

  1655. loves

  1656. me

  1657. because

  1658. I

  1659. lay

  1660. my

  1661. life

  1662. down

  1663. that

  1664. I

  1665. might

  1666. take

  1667. it

  1668. up

  1669. again

  1670. it's

  1671. bigger

  1672. than

  1673. what

  1674. it

  1675. sounds

  1676. like

  1677. what

  1678. Jesus

  1679. says

  1680. God

  1681. loves

  1682. me

  1683. the

  1684. father

  1685. loves

  1686. me

  1687. the

  1688. son

  1689. because

  1690. I

  1691. willingly

  1692. have

  1693. given

  1694. my

  1695. life

  1696. for

  1697. the

  1698. sheep

  1699. I

  1700. willingly

  1701. laid

  1702. it

  1703. down

  1704. it's

  1705. uncoerced

  1706. God

  1707. the

  1708. father

  1709. delights

  1710. in it

  1711. that

  1712. Jesus

  1713. would

  1714. willingly

  1715. give

  1716. his

  1717. life

  1718. for

  1719. us

  1720. in

  1721. verse

  1722. 18

  1723. it's

  1724. that

  1725. willingness

  1726. that

  1727. gets

  1728. emphasized

  1729. no

  1730. one

  1731. takes

  1732. it

  1733. from

  1734. me

  1735. but

  1736. I

  1737. lay

  1738. it

  1739. down

  1740. of

  1741. my

  1742. own

  1743. accords

  1744. you

  1745. see

  1746. his

  1747. goodness

  1748. ran

  1749. red

  1750. he

  1751. shed

  1752. his

  1753. blood

  1754. on

  1755. the

  1756. cross

  1757. that's

  1758. what

  1759. he's

  1760. talking

  1761. about

  1762. when

  1763. he's

  1764. talking

  1765. about

  1766. laying

  1767. down

  1768. his

  1769. life

  1770. his

  1771. death

  1772. on

  1773. the

  1774. cross

  1775. where

  1776. his

  1777. blood

  1778. flowed

  1779. down

  1780. and

  1781. he

  1782. died

  1783. in

  1784. order

  1785. to

  1786. bear

  1787. all

  1788. of

  1789. God's

  1790. wrath

  1791. for

  1792. all

  1793. of

  1794. our

  1795. sins

  1796. so

  1797. that

  1798. we

  1799. could

  1800. be

  1801. brought

  1802. into

  1803. a

  1804. relationship

  1805. with

  1806. the

  1807. living

  1808. God

  1809. he

  1810. he

  1811. did

  1812. did

  1813. that

  1814. willingly

  1815. uncoerced

  1816. because

  1817. he

  1818. loves

  1819. us

  1820. this

  1821. is

  1822. the

  1823. authority

  1824. that

  1825. has

  1826. been

  1827. granted

  1828. to

  1829. the

  1830. son

  1831. of

  1832. man

  1833. to

  1834. lay

  1835. down

  1836. his

  1837. life

  1838. and

  1839. then

  1840. to

  1841. take

  1842. it

  1843. up

  1844. again

  1845. he's

  1846. talking

  1847. about

  1848. his

  1849. resurrection

  1850. this

  1851. is

  1852. gospel

  1853. this

  1854. is

  1855. Jesus

  1856. talking

  1857. about

  1858. the

  1859. gospel

  1860. in

  1861. different

  1862. language

  1863. he's

  1864. talking

  1865. about

  1866. laying

  1867. !

  1868. it

  1869. down

  1870. and

  1871. taking

  1872. it

  1873. up

  1874. again

  1875. you see

  1876. the shepherd

  1877. of the

  1878. sheep

  1879. not only

  1880. laid

  1881. his

  1882. life

  1883. down

  1884. for

  1885. us

  1886. but

  1887. he

  1888. was

  1889. raised

  1890. three

  1891. days

  1892. later

  1893. and

  1894. do

  1895. you

  1896. know

  1897. what

  1898. that

  1899. means?

  1900. he's

  1901. alive

  1902. today

  1903. the

  1904. shepherd

  1905. of the

  1906. sheep

  1907. who

  1908. laid

  1909. his

  1910. life

  1911. down

  1912. for

  1913. you

  1914. is

  1915. now

  1916. sitting

  1917. upon

  1918. a

  1919. throne

  1920. of

  1921. grace

  1922. and

  1923. he

  1924. bids

  1925. you

  1926. come

  1927. come

  1928. in

  1929. your

  1930. need

  1931. you

  1932. shall

  1933. not

  1934. want

  1935. !

  1936. I

  1937. will

  1938. lead

  1939. you

  1940. you

  1941. know

  1942. what

  1943. this

  1944. is?

  1945. This

  1946. is

  1947. commitment

  1948. his

  1949. commitment

  1950. to

  1951. us

  1952. if

  1953. he

  1954. was

  1955. willing

  1956. to

  1957. lay

  1958. his

  1959. life

  1960. down

  1961. for

  1962. you

  1963. his

  1964. goodness

  1965. runs

  1966. red

  1967. how

  1968. much

  1969. more

  1970. will

  1971. he

  1972. be

  1973. willing

  1974. to

  1975. provide

  1976. everything

  1977. that

  1978. we

  1979. need

  1980. for

  1981. life

  1982. and

  1983. godliness

  1984. what

  1985. a

  1986. wonder

  1987. Jesus

  1988. is

  1989. the

  1990. legit

  1991. shepherd

  1992. he

  1993. is

  1994. god

  1995. Jesus

  1996. is

  1997. the

  1998. purposed

  1999. shepherd

  2000. he

  2001. has

  2002. come

  2003. to

  2004. give

  2005. abundant

  2006. life

  2007. and

  2008. Jesus

  2009. is

  2010. the

  2011. committed

  2012. shepherd

  2013. his

  2014. goodness

  2015. runs

  2016. red

  2017. it's

  2018. his

  2019. love

  2020. for

  2021. you

  2022. his

  2023. commitment

  2024. to

  2025. you

  2026. he

  2027. laid

  2028. down

  2029. his

  2030. life

  2031. for

  2032. us

  2033. this

  2034. is

  2035. the

  2036. good

  2037. of

  2038. the

  2039. good

  2040. shepherd

  2041. that

  2042. he

  2043. would

  2044. die

  2045. and

  2046. be

  2047. raised

  2048. so

  2049. that

  2050. we

  2051. could

  2052. be

  2053. brought

  2054. into

  2055. his

  2056. one

  2057. flock

  2058. so

  2059. here's

  2060. what

  2061. that

  2062. means

  2063. for

  2064. all

  2065. of

  2066. us

  2067. in

  2068. the

  2069. room

  2070. because

  2071. your

  2072. good

  2073. shepherd

  2074. is

  2075. fully

  2076. committed

  2077. to

  2078. you

  2079. fully

  2080. committed

  2081. you

  2082. can

  2083. fully

  2084. trust

  2085. him

  2086. you

  2087. can

  2088. trust

  2089. him

  2090. so

  2091. for

  2092. those

  2093. of

  2094. us

  2095. in

  2096. the

  2097. room

  2098. who

  2099. have

  2100. yet

  2101. to

  2102. respond

  2103. to

  2104. the

  2105. call

  2106. of

  2107. the

  2108. good

  2109. shepherd

  2110. you

  2111. haven't

  2112. become

  2113. a

  2114. Christian

  2115. in

  2116. verses

  2117. 19

  2118. through

  2119. 20

  2120. of

  2121. chapter

  2122. 10

  2123. we

  2124. see

  2125. this

  2126. divided

  2127. response

  2128. to

  2129. Jesus

  2130. we

  2131. have

  2132. some

  2133. people

  2134. who

  2135. think

  2136. that

  2137. Jesus

  2138. is

  2139. demon

  2140. possessed

  2141. and

  2142. insane

  2143. and

  2144. then

  2145. we

  2146. have

  2147. others

  2148. who

  2149. are

  2150. saying

  2151. a

  2152. demon

  2153. doesn't

  2154. speak

  2155. like

  2156. this

  2157. a

  2158. demon

  2159. can't

  2160. open

  2161. the

  2162. eyes

  2163. of

  2164. a

  2165. blind

  2166. man

  2167. and

  2168. we

  2169. have

  2170. two

  2171. responses

  2172. to

  2173. the

  2174. words

  2175. of

  2176. God

  2177. incarnate

  2178. so

  2179. the

  2180. words

  2181. of

  2182. that

  2183. Jesus

  2184. is

  2185. speaking

  2186. to

  2187. you

  2188. today

  2189. if

  2190. you're

  2191. not

  2192. a

  2193. Christian

  2194. he

  2195. is

  2196. calling

  2197. you

  2198. out

  2199. to

  2200. come

  2201. be

  2202. his

  2203. sheep

  2204. to

  2205. become

  2206. one

  2207. of

  2208. his

  2209. own

  2210. so

  2211. let

  2212. me

  2213. ask

  2214. you

  2215. if

  2216. you're

  2217. not

  2218. Christian

  2219. in

  2220. the

  2221. room

  2222. do

  2223. you

  2224. believe

  2225. that

  2226. Jesus

  2227. is

  2228. God

  2229. do

  2230. you

  2231. believe

  2232. that

  2233. he

  2234. gives

  2235. abundant

  2236. life

  2237. eternal

  2238. life

  2239. and

  2240. do

  2241. you

  2242. believe

  2243. that

  2244. he

  2245. laid

  2246. down

  2247. his

  2248. life

  2249. for

  2250. you

  2251. with

  2252. your

  2253. name

  2254. in

  2255. his

  2256. mind

  2257. do

  2258. you

  2259. believe

  2260. !

  2261. that

  2262. if

  2263. you

  2264. believe

  2265. that

  2266. today's

  2267. the day

  2268. that you

  2269. enter

  2270. his

  2271. fold

  2272. that

  2273. you

  2274. come

  2275. to

  2276. him

  2277. that

  2278. you

  2279. confess

  2280. him

  2281. as

  2282. your

  2283. good

  2284. shepherd

  2285. he

  2286. knows

  2287. your

  2288. name

  2289. you

  2290. say

  2291. to

  2292. him

  2293. Jesus

  2294. I

  2295. have

  2296. been

  2297. wandering

  2298. from

  2299. you

  2300. and

  2301. trying

  2302. to

  2303. figure

  2304. this

  2305. out

  2306. on

  2307. my

  2308. own

  2309. but

  2310. I

  2311. have

  2312. now

  2313. come

  2314. to

  2315. see

  2316. that

  2317. you

  2318. are

  2319. my

  2320. good

  2321. shepherd

  2322. you

  2323. are

  2324. my

  2325. Lord

  2326. my

  2327. king

  2328. and

  2329. I

  2330. will

  2331. follow

  2332. you

  2333. I

  2334. see

  2335. that

  2336. your

  2337. goodness

  2338. ran

  2339. red

  2340. for

  2341. me

  2342. and

  2343. I

  2344. will

  2345. trust

  2346. you

  2347. that's

  2348. how you

  2349. become

  2350. a

  2351. Christian

  2352. it's

  2353. by

  2354. trusting

  2355. !

  2356. you

  2357. can't

  2358. earn

  2359. it

  2360. you

  2361. receive

  2362. it

  2363. now

  2364. if

  2365. you

  2366. are

  2367. already

  2368. his

  2369. sheep

  2370. but

  2371. let's

  2372. you

  2373. say

  2374. you've

  2375. been

  2376. wandering

  2377. a

  2378. little

  2379. bit

  2380. I

  2381. want

  2382. to

  2383. remind

  2384. you

  2385. of

  2386. his

  2387. goodness

  2388. towards

  2389. you

  2390. his

  2391. goodness

  2392. runs

  2393. red

  2394. he

  2395. loves

  2396. you

  2397. Christian

  2398. even

  2399. in

  2400. your

  2401. wandering

  2402. he

  2403. has

  2404. pursued

  2405. you

  2406. surely

  2407. goodness

  2408. and

  2409. mercy

  2410. shall

  2411. follow

  2412. me

  2413. all

  2414. the

  2415. days

  2416. of

  2417. my

  2418. life

  2419. you

  2420. know

  2421. what

  2422. the

  2423. Hebrew

  2424. actually

  2425. maybe

  2426. better

  2427. says

  2428. surely

  2429. goodness

  2430. and

  2431. mercy

  2432. pursue

  2433. me

  2434. all

  2435. the

  2436. days

  2437. of

  2438. my

  2439. life

  2440. could

  2441. it

  2442. be

  2443. wandering

  2444. sheep

  2445. that

  2446. your

  2447. savior

  2448. has

  2449. been

  2450. pursuing

  2451. you

  2452. all

  2453. along

  2454. in

  2455. your

  2456. wanderings

  2457. maybe

  2458. it's

  2459. time

  2460. for

  2461. you

  2462. to

  2463. fully

  2464. trust

  2465. him

  2466. he's

  2467. fully

  2468. committed

  2469. to

  2470. you

  2471. he

  2472. laid

  2473. his

  2474. life

  2475. down

  2476. for

  2477. you

  2478. he

  2479. took

  2480. it

  2481. up

  2482. again

  2483. he

  2484. sits

  2485. on

  2486. a

  2487. throne

  2488. of

  2489. grace

  2490. maybe

  2491. it's

  2492. time

  2493. for

  2494. you

  2495. to

  2496. trust

  2497. him

  2498. fully

  2499. third

  2500. we

  2501. join

  2502. him

  2503. in

  2504. his

  2505. gathering

  2506. of

  2507. one

  2508. flock

  2509. with

  2510. one

  2511. shepherd

  2512. think

  2513. about

  2514. vacation

  2515. bible

  2516. school

  2517. coming

  2518. up

  2519. on

  2520. the

  2521. first

  2522. week

  2523. of

  2524. August

  2525. as

  2526. the

  2527. good

  2528. shepherd

  2529. calling

  2530. his

  2531. own

  2532. sheep

  2533. to

  2534. himself

  2535. and

  2536. we

  2537. can

  2538. rest

  2539. knowing

  2540. that

  2541. his

  2542. sheep

  2543. will

  2544. respond

  2545. we

  2546. get

  2547. to

  2548. be

  2549. part

  2550. of

  2551. that

  2552. not

  2553. just

  2554. in

  2555. one

  2556. week

  2557. in

  2558. August

  2559. but

  2560. every

  2561. week

  2562. throughout

  2563. the

  2564. year

  2565. we

  2566. get

  2567. to

  2568. join

  2569. him

  2570. in

  2571. what

  2572. the

  2573. good

  2574. shepherd

  2575. is

  2576. doing

  2577. finally

  2578. I

  2579. just

  2580. want

  2581. to

  2582. wrap

  2583. up

  2584. with

  2585. a

  2586. word

  2587. on

  2588. leadership

  2589. this

  2590. passage

  2591. is

  2592. a

  2593. contrast

  2594. in

  2595. leadership

  2596. the

  2597. leadership

  2598. of

  2599. the

  2600. Pharisees

  2601. who

  2602. are

  2603. thieves

  2604. robbers

  2605. strangers

  2606. hired

  2607. hands

  2608. their

  2609. motives

  2610. were

  2611. to

  2612. steal

  2613. to

  2614. kill

  2615. to

  2616. destroy

  2617. they

  2618. were

  2619. in

  2620. it

  2621. for

  2622. themselves

  2623. that's

  2624. one

  2625. kind

  2626. of

  2627. leadership

  2628. we

  2629. see

  2630. that

  2631. kind

  2632. of

  2633. leadership

  2634. all

  2635. over

  2636. the

  2637. place

  2638. that's

  2639. not

  2640. Jesus

  2641. kind

  2642. of

  2643. leadership

  2644. the

  2645. leadership

  2646. of

  2647. Jesus

  2648. runs

  2649. red

  2650. it's

  2651. loving

  2652. it

  2653. knows

  2654. his

  2655. flock

  2656. it's

  2657. sacrificial

  2658. he

  2659. lays

  2660. his

  2661. life

  2662. down

  2663. and

  2664. you

  2665. know

  2666. what

  2667. here's

  2668. some

  2669. good

  2670. news

  2671. unlike

  2672. the

  2673. hired

  2674. hand

  2675. who

  2676. bails

  2677. on

  2678. the

  2679. sheep

  2680. Jesus

  2681. will

  2682. never

  2683. leave

  2684. you

  2685. nor

  2686. forsake

  2687. you

  2688. he

  2689. has

  2690. bound

  2691. himself

  2692. to

  2693. you

  2694. through

  2695. his

  2696. blood

  2697. he

  2698. provides

  2699. the

  2700. ultimate

  2701. example

  2702. for

  2703. all

  2704. Christian

  2705. leaders

  2706. leaders

  2707. whether

  2708. you're

  2709. a

  2710. husband

  2711. or a

  2712. dad

  2713. a

  2714. pastor

  2715. elder

  2716. a

  2717. deacon

  2718. you're

  2719. part

  2720. of

  2721. the

  2722. women's

  2723. ministry

  2724. you're

  2725. a

  2726. life

  2727. group

  2728. leader

  2729. you're

  2730. overseeing

  2731. some

  2732. children's

  2733. ministry

  2734. you're

  2735. teaching

  2736. children

  2737. whatever

  2738. it may

  2739. be

  2740. Jesus

  2741. is

  2742. the

  2743. ultimate

  2744. example

  2745. for

  2746. all

  2747. Christian

  2748. leaders

  2749. so

  2750. as we

  2751. follow

  2752. Jesus

  2753. the

  2754. good

  2755. shepherd

  2756. shepherd

  2757. we

  2758. help

  2759. other

  2760. people

  2761. follow

  2762. Jesus

  2763. the

  2764. good

  2765. shepherd

  2766. if

  2767. you've

  2768. been

  2769. deeply

  2770. wounded

  2771. by a

  2772. Christian

  2773. leader

  2774. in the

  2775. past

  2776. you

  2777. can

  2778. trust

  2779. your

  2780. good

  2781. shepherd

  2782. now

  2783. he's

  2784. still

  2785. your

  2786. good

  2787. shepherd

  2788. and

  2789. your

  2790. trust

  2791. in

  2792. him

  2793. will

  2794. help

  2795. you

  2796. to

  2797. begin

  2798. to

  2799. trust

  2800. his

  2801. under

  2802. shepherds

  2803. your

  2804. trust

  2805. can

  2806. be

  2807. restored

  2808. you

  2809. know

  2810. what

  2811. you're

  2812. looking

  2813. for

  2814. you're

  2815. looking

  2816. for

  2817. leaders

  2818. who

  2819. lead

  2820. like

  2821. him

  2822. loving

  2823. knows

  2824. the

  2825. sheep

  2826. and

  2827. give

  2828. their

  2829. lives

  2830. sacrificially

  2831. what

  2832. is

  2833. the

  2834. good

  2835. of

  2836. this

  2837. good

  2838. shepherd

  2839. in

  2840. love

  2841. he

  2842. laid

  2843. down

  2844. his

  2845. own

  2846. life

  2847. for

  2848. us

  2849. his

  2851. and

  2852. he

  2853. will

  2854. never

  2855. leave

  2856. us

  2857. nor

  2858. forsake

  2859. us

  2860. and

  2861. do

  2862. you

  2863. know

  2864. how

  2865. we

  2866. know

  2867. that

  2868. because

  2869. his

  2870. goodness

  2871. runs

  2872. red

  2873. will

  2874. you pray

  2875. with

  2876. me

  2877. Lord

  2878. Jesus

  2879. we

  2880. cannot

  2881. thank you

  2882. enough

  2883. for what

  2884. you've

  2885. done

  2886. for us

  2887. willingly

  2888. to

  2889. bring

  2890. bring

  2891. us

  2892. into

  2893. your

  2894. fold

  2895. to

  2896. unite

  2897. us

  2898. together

  2899. with

  2902. from

  2903. all

  2904. around

  2905. the

  2907. to

  2908. give

  2909. us

  2910. abundant

  2911. life

  2912. through

  2913. your

  2917. Lord

  2918. Jesus

  2919. we

  2920. confess

  2921. you

  2922. as

  2923. our

  2924. good

  2926. and

  2927. for

  2928. the

  2930. of

  2931. this

  2932. day

  2933. we

  2934. gladly

  2935. follow

  2936. you

  2937. in

  2938. Jesus

  2939. name

  2940. we

  2941. pray

  2942. !
