  1. If you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 10, we're going to be looking at the back half

    John 10 chapter mention

  2. of John chapter 10, verses 22 through 42. It's on page 1068 of your pew Bible. And as you're

    John 10:22–42

  3. churning there, let me tell you a story. I was 18 and I was fearing for my life. I had just graduated

  4. from high school and my youth pastor at the time had challenged me to run a mini triathlon with him

  5. in Crystal Lake. So it's swim, bike, run. And being the cocky fool that I was, I said yes.

  6. But being the really cocky fool that I was, 18, prime of life, I'm like, I don't need to train.

  7. So I showed up not having trained. And I knew I was in over my head when I showed up to the Crystal

  8. Lake Beach in my American Eagle trunks to my knees. And I look around me and everyone is in this elite

  9. neoprene kind of wetsuit. I'm like, uh-oh.

  10. So the starter, you know, shoots the gun and I'm quick. So I blasted off the line. I was one of the

  11. first in the water and the water was like 53, 55 degrees. And so I instantly like, meh.

  12. And then everybody caught up. And the next thing I know, and this is where I was fearing for my life,

  13. people were swimming over me. And I realized at that moment, I'm like, down, get up. Because now the

  14. weight of my competitors was holding me down in the water. And I'm like, am I going to drown? Is this

  15. the way that it's going to end? I really wasn't thinking that clearly because I'm still kind of

  16. like breathless. You know, there are a lot of Christians and non-Christians who are experiencing

  17. a fear of having your head underwater spiritually. Like the weight of sin is holding

  18. you down and you are beginning to fear that there is no way up.

  19. We default in our thinking that, yeah, God forgives every once in a while.

  20. He forgives the big stuff, the once in a while stuff. But for the chronic, repeated sin,

  21. the kind of sin that you say to yourself when you do it, like, why do I keep doing this?

  22. Why would God love a mess like this? Surely there comes a point when God says enough is enough.

  23. And he just lets us go. Anybody been there? I lived a lot of my early Christian life that way.

  24. It was miserable.

  25. We have this knack of making God into our own image. And this knack of thinking God loves us the

  26. way that we love others based upon their response to us. So we sneak our obedience into our standing

  27. with God. You start thinking things like, how many second chances can God give me?

  28. When is it like a banana that just is no longer ripe towards me?

  29. God's love certainly must have a limited shelf life.

  30. I've got good news for you this morning, Christian.

  31. God's love for you does not depend on your obedience to him.

  32. God's love for you in its fullness does not have a limited shelf life.

  33. God's love for you.

  34. God's love for you.

  35. God's love for you.

  36. We saw last week that the good shepherd, that his goodness runs red.

  37. That he died, he laid his life down for you and took it up again.

  38. That's good news.

  39. But this morning I've got more good news.

  40. That this good shepherd who laid his life down and his goodness, his goodness runs red.

  41. This same good shepherd, you go.

  42. You are unsmatchable.

  43. This morning we find ourselves in another confrontation between Jesus and the Jewish leaders.

  44. And it's a confrontation over two titles.

  45. The Christ and the Son of God.

  46. The Jewish leaders have rejected Jesus being the Christ, the Son of God.

  47. But for those of us who believe, those two titles, the Christ, the Son of God,

  48. it reveals a goodness to us that he will never let us go.

  49. So let's look at these two titles and then bring them to bear upon our lives.

  50. And so chapter 10, verses 22 through 30, let's look at this first title, the Christ.

  51. We read this.

  52. At that time, the Feast of Dedication took place at Jerusalem.

  53. It was winter and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon.

  54. So the Jews gathered around him and said to him,

  55. How long will you keep us in suspense?

  56. If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.

  57. Jesus answered them, I told you and you did not believe.

  58. The works that I do in my Father's name bear witness about me,

  59. but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep.

  60. My sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.

  61. I give them eternal life and they will never perish.

  62. And no one, no one, no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  63. My Father who has given them to me is greater than all and no one,

  64. no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand.

  65. I and the Father are one.

  66. Verse 22, time has passed since the last verses 1 through 21 that we read,

  67. that we preached, saw last week.

  68. Some time has passed.

  69. It's a different time of year.

  70. It's the winter time now.

  71. It's the Feast of Dedication.

  72. The Feast of Dedication, if you don't know,

  73. it's what we have commonly known, come to know as Hanukkah.

  74. So Hanukkah is being celebrated.

  75. And notice where Jesus is.

  76. He's in Jerusalem.

  77. He's in the temple.

  78. He's in the colonnade of Solomon, the third king of Israel.

  79. And Solomon's colonnade, also known as Solomon's porch,

  80. was an 800-foot long covered porch on the eastern side of the temple complex.

  81. Do you know how long that is?

  82. That's like three football fields.

  83. That's huge.

  84. It had 40-foot columns.

  85. It was holding up a ceiling, a roof of cedar.

  86. It was massive.

  87. In fact, in Acts chapter 5, we learn that the early church in Jerusalem met at Solomon's porch.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  88. What we're going to see is that this account that starts in Jerusalem will end in a very different place.

  89. In verse 24, Jesus is literally surrounded.

  90. This is not an accidental kind of like surrounding.

  91. This is an intentional surrounding.

  92. He's surrounded by Jewish leaders, and they have some questions for him.

  93. In fact, they are posing it as a question, but it's more of a demand.

  94. And this is just part of the tension between Jesus and the Jewish leaders that has been building since chapter 5.

  95. And so, essentially, they say, are you the Christ or not?

  96. Will you just give it to us straight?

  97. Just straight up tell us.

  98. Now, if you're not familiar with the word Christ, you can make a mistake at this point.

  99. Because you're familiar with the two words Jesus Christ.

  100. And you may think, well, Christ is Jesus' last name.

  101. Like the last name, it is a title.

  102. Jesus the Christ, Mike the pastor, Nate the intern.

  103. They're descriptive titles.

  104. Christ is a Greek translation of a Hebrew word, Messiah, that we say in English.

  105. And that means anointed one.

  106. As in the anointed king of Israel.

  107. It carries this sense of kingship.

  108. And so, throughout the Old Testament, there was this growing anticipation of a coming Messiah.

  109. An anointed one.

  110. A king who would rule God's people.

  111. And he would be descended of King David.

  112. He would sit on David's forever throne.

  113. That's 2 Samuel 7.

  114. He would be royal.

  115. He would be divine.

  116. He would be forever.

  117. He would be just.

  118. He would also suffer.

  119. But he would deliver God's people and establish a kingdom that could never be destroyed.

  120. Daniel 7, 13 and 14.

  121. Now, if you were a Jew living in Jerusalem in the first century, that means you were under Roman rule.

  122. And that would have been oppressive for you.

  123. It would have limited what you could do as a Jew.

  124. And so, if you were longing for the Messiah, chances are, it would have been politically loaded.

  125. You're like, I want to get out from under Roman rule.

  126. Come, Messiah.

  127. Come deliver.

  128. Re-establish Israel.

  129. Make Israel great again.

  130. We can all relate with this.

  131. We, as Americans, want a president.

  132. Regardless of where you're on the political spectrum.

  133. You want a president who will represent you.

  134. Who will do you good.

  135. Who will deliver.

  136. Who will make us great.

  137. And so, we have this ripe situation in Jerusalem.

  138. There are many ideas of who or what the Messiah would do.

  139. And there were many men claiming to be the Messiah.

  140. And so, it's no wonder that Jewish leaders, at least on one level, are like, okay, would you just give it to us straight?

  141. Are you the Messiah or not?

  142. Come on, straight up.

  143. Just give it to us plainly.

  144. Shoot straight.

  145. But they have their own ideas of who the Messiah would be.

  146. So, let me just ask this question of you.

  147. What is your idea of the Messiah?

  148. Who do you think the coming king, the king, should be?

  149. In verse 25, Jesus responds to the demand.

  150. He says, verse 25, very plainly,

  151. I told you, and you did not believe.

  152. And then he says,

  153. the works that I do in my father's name bear witness about me.

  154. I've told you.

  155. How did you tell me?

  156. And he switches kind of communication strategies.

  157. He's like, I told you with my works.

  158. With what I did.

  159. What works?

  160. Well, in John 5, he heals the paralytic in Jerusalem on the Sabbath.

  161. And the Jews, at that moment, start to seek to kill him because he claimed to be equal with God.

  162. In John 9, we were just there.

  163. Jesus heals a man born blind.

  164. He tracks him down.

  165. And he asks this man who now sees, who's never seen Jesus' face.

  166. Jesus asks him, do you believe in the Son of Man?

  167. And the man formerly blind says, yeah, show me him.

  168. And then Jesus says to him, you're looking at him.

  169. And when Jesus tells him that,

  170. Jesus is making a claim of being the Messiah

  171. because the Son of Man is just another messianic title.

  172. And when you hear about his kingship,

  173. here's the association you need to have with that.

  174. It's about authority.

  175. Kings carry authority.

  176. And Jesus has the authority to heal a paralytic.

  177. He's got the authority to heal someone who's been blind all their life.

  178. Next week, we're going to see him, hallelujah,

  179. heal a man who was dead for four days.

  180. At the end of Matthew, when Jesus, after his resurrection,

  181. he appears to his disciples, and he tells them straight up,

  182. he's like, all authority in heaven and earth has been given to me.

  183. He's got all authority.

  184. He has the right to do anything he wants.

  185. And the Jewish leaders did not believe that these works that Jesus was doing

  186. were actually bearing witness that he was the Christ.

  187. In John 10, Jesus calls himself the good shepherd.

  188. And it's that phrase, good shepherd,

  189. it doesn't just carry the sense of leader, follower.

  190. It does.

  191. It carries more than that.

  192. It goes beyond Psalm 23.

  193. It goes beyond Ezekiel 34.

  194. Shepherding is a way of describing kingship.

  195. In Psalm 78, Asaph writes this.

  196. This is verses 70, 71, and 72.

  197. He, God, chose David, his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds.

  198. From following the nursing ewes, he brought him to shepherd Jacob, his people, Israel, his inheritance.

  199. With upright heart, he, David, shepherded them and guided them with his skillful hand.

  200. A king was a shepherd king.

  201. And what Jesus is claiming here, what's being said of him being the Christ,

  202. is he is the great shepherd king who has all authority,

  203. and he has laid his life down and taken it up again.

  204. His goodness runs red.

  205. And so his words, his works, point to him being the Christ.

  206. He even tells the Samaritan woman in John chapter 4 in Sychar,

    John 4 chapter mention

  207. when she makes a comment,

  208. yeah, you know, the Messiah, when he comes, he will tell us all things.

  209. He says to her, I who speak to you am he.

  210. So not just works, but he used words too.

  211. Unfortunately, these leaders were not around to hear that.

  212. They didn't believe.

  213. And Jesus says why in verse 26.

  214. He says, you don't believe because you're not among my sheep.

  215. His sheep hear his voice.

  216. His sheep hear his voice because they belong to him.

  217. Jesus says in verse 26, excuse me, in verse 27,

  218. my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.

  219. And I know them.

  220. Last week we looked at Jesus saying, I know my sheep and my sheep know me.

  221. And that knowledge is not just this kind of like fact knowledge, head knowledge.

  222. It is that.

  223. It is a personal knowledge.

  224. It's a personal relationship.

  225. It's being in intimate personal relationship with the Christ.

  226. CCEF, the Christian counseling.

  227. Thank you, Zach.

  228. So when we hear the word, I know them, you can swap out the word know with love.

  229. I love them.

  230. I know my sheep.

  231. I love my sheep.

  232. I laid my life down for my sheep.

  233. You might ask the question, well, how long?

  234. How long has he known us like that?

  235. He has known you and loved you since before the foundation of the earth.

  236. He's been tracking you.

  237. In verse 28, we learn that Jesus gives them his sheep who he knows and loves, who hear his voice.

  238. He gives them eternal life and they will never perish.

  239. And just to be clear, we play no part in receiving this eternal life.

  240. It's God who causes us to be born again.

  241. It's him that makes us new creations.

  242. Eternal life is not caused by any of us or anything that we do in any sense.

  243. But we've been made alive in Christ Jesus all because of the goodness of the good shepherd who laid his life down and took it up again.

  244. His death and resurrection.

  245. His goodness runs red.

  246. But in verses 28 and 29, we have the unsnatchable promise.

  247. No one, no one will snatch them out of my hand.

  248. No one.

  249. So let me put it together for you.

  250. The all authoritative Christ.

  251. The all authoritative Christ.

  252. Who has authority over heaven and earth.

  253. All things.

  254. He has authority over paralysis.

  255. He has authority over blindness.

  256. He has authority over death.

  257. He has authority over your soul.

  258. He has authority over the devil.

  259. He has authority over creation.

  260. He has authority over all things.

  261. And he is saying, no one will snatch them out of my hands.

  262. No one.

  263. That's really good news.

  264. His goodness never lets you go.

  265. It's because he's the Christ.

  266. He's got all authority.

  267. And in fact, he doesn't stop with just talking about himself.

  268. He says, no one can snatch them out of the Father's hand.

  269. He needs greater than all.

  270. And so what he's painting the picture of is this divine double grip on each of his sheep that will never let you go.

  271. You are held by the all-authoritative divine grip of the Almighty.

  272. It is really good news.

  273. His goodness never lets go of his sheep.

  274. And in verse 30, he says, I and the Father are one.

  275. He's claiming unity with God the Father along two lines.

  276. Mission.

  277. Why he came.

  278. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son.

  279. One of a kind son that whoever believes in him shall not.

  280. Same mission.

  281. Different roles in that mission.

  282. But same mission.

  283. And he's claiming oneness of nature.

  284. That he himself is fully God.

  285. It's not just mission, but nature.

  286. Two distinct persons.

  287. God the Father.

  288. God the Son.

  289. Of course, there's God the Spirit.

  290. Fully God.

  291. Playing different roles in our salvation.

  292. And they have a double grip on us.

  293. The Christ is the all-authoritative God.

  294. And he's got a grip on you that will never let you go.

  295. Because of who he is.

  296. Not because of who you are.

  297. Now, let me just ask a question before we move on.

  298. Who then has the authority to snatch you out of his hand?

  299. Who then in all of creation has a surpassing glory to Jesus

  300. that is authorized to snatch you sheep out of the good shepherd's hands?

  301. There's no one.

  302. And I would argue, not even you.

  303. So we've looked at this title, the Christ.

  304. Now let's look at the second title.

  305. The Son of God.

  306. And that is in verses 31 through 39.

  307. Let me read that.

  308. The Jews picked up stones again to stone him.

  309. Jesus answered them,

  310. I have shown you many good works from the Father.

  311. For which one of them are you going to stone me?

  312. The Jews answered him,

  313. It's not for a good work that we are going to stone you,

  314. but for blasphemy.

  315. What's that?

  316. You, being a man, make yourself God.

  317. Now, Jesus answered them,

  318. Is it not written in your law, I said, you are gods?

  319. If he called them gods to whom the word of God came,

  320. and scripture cannot be broken,

  321. do you say of him whom the Father consecrated and sent into the world,

  322. you are blaspheming?

  323. Because I said, I am the Son of God.

  324. If I am not doing the works of my Father,

  325. then do not believe me.

  326. But if I do them,

  327. even though you do not believe me,

  328. what I say about myself,

  329. believe the works,

  330. that you may know and understand

  331. that the Father is in me,

  332. and I am in the Father.

  333. Again, they sought to arrest him,

  334. but he escaped from their hands.

  335. In verse 31,

  336. the Jews pick up stones to stone Jesus,

  337. to kill him,

  338. and we know that they've wanted to kill Jesus

  339. since chapter 5,

  340. when Jesus healed the paralytic

  341. and claimed to be God.

  342. They've been wanting to kill him.

  343. Chapter 8,

  344. Jesus makes this crazy statement

  345. in verse 58,

  346. Before Abraham was,

  347. I am,

  348. claiming to be Yahweh.

  349. Why?

  350. And again,

  351. the Jews pick up stones

  352. to stone him,

  353. but it wasn't his time.

  354. So in verse 32,

  355. they pick up stones

  356. to stone him again

  357. in verse 31,

  358. and Jesus said,

  359. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  360. For which of my good works

  361. are you going to kill me?

  362. Are you going to stone me?

  363. Now, you've got to understand

  364. what's going on here.

  365. It's like if we were looking down

  366. the muzzle of a gold,

  367. of a loaded gun,

  368. he's looking at men

  369. with stones in their hands,

  370. and he's like,

  371. Whoa, whoa, whoa.

  372. Which of these good works

  373. that I'm doing?

  374. Is it the paralytic I healed?

  375. Is it the blind man?

  376. Just wait till you see

  377. what I do in a few days.

  378. They say in verse 33,

  379. Not for a good work,

  380. but for blasphemy.

  381. And they give the definition.

  382. You a mere man

  383. making yourself God.

  384. Blasphemy, what it is,

  385. it's a charge of a false claim.

  386. Blasphemy is charging someone

  387. with a false claim.

  388. Blasphemy is saying,

  389. You are claiming to be God,

  390. but you're not.

  391. Unfortunately,

  392. they got it wrong.

  393. Because what they're assuming

  394. in this charge

  395. is that Jesus

  396. is just a mere man.

  397. And that he's not God.

  398. He existed with God.

  399. He didn't make himself God.

  400. He is very God.

  401. In fact,

  402. the Jews actually

  403. had it backwards.

  404. Here's what I mean by that.

  405. He's not a man

  406. who made himself God.

  407. God.

  408. He is God

  409. who was made man.

  410. Remember

  411. John 1, 14?

  412. And the word

  413. became flesh

  414. and dwelt among us.

  415. Oh man,

  416. did they have it backwards.

  417. They were totally missing this.

  418. They did not believe

  419. who Jesus was.

  420. And in verses

  421. chapter 5

  422. of John

  423. and 8

  424. and 10.

  425. They just miss

  426. and miss

  427. and miss.

  428. And they just don't call him

  429. a blasphemer.

  430. They call him demon possessed.

  431. They call him insane.

  432. So check it out.

  433. If

  434. our

  435. king

  436. was called

  437. those things,

  438. what do you think

  439. that means for us?

  440. There's no way

  441. around it.

  442. In verses

  443. 34 through 38,

  444. Jesus responds

  445. to the charge

  446. of blasphemy.

  447. And he responds

  448. in a way

  449. that may sound

  450. a little confusing

  451. to our ears.

  452. Let me try

  453. to spell it out.

  454. So what Jesus does

  455. is he

  456. corrects

  457. the Pharisees'

  458. sloppy use

  459. of a phrase,

  460. the son of man.

  461. It's like

  462. you guys don't

  463. know your Bibles.

  464. And so

  465. in verse 34

  466. he says,

  467. Jesus answered,

  468. is it not written

  469. in your law?

  470. I said,

  471. you are gods.

  472. And that's

  473. Psalm 82

    Psalms 82:6

  474. verses 6 and 7.

  475. And he just doesn't

  476. say you are gods.

  477. He says,

  478. you are sons

  479. of the Most High.

  480. And his point

  481. is that

  482. in that

  483. Psalm,

  484. God is speaking

  485. to humans

  486. and calling them

  487. sons of God.

  488. Sons of the Most High.

  489. And so what Jesus

  490. is simply doing here

  491. is just showing them,

  492. it's like,

  493. you guys don't know

  494. your Bibles.

  495. Because

  496. the phrase,

  497. the son of God

  498. is actually used

  499. for human beings.

  500. For example,

  501. Psalm 82.

  502. And so what Jesus

  503. is doing here

  504. is demonstrating

  505. that they don't know

  506. what they're really

  507. talking about.

  508. But what happens

  509. in verse 35 and 36

  510. is called

  511. a lesser to greater

  512. argument.

  513. So starting there

  514. with this idea

  515. of Psalm 82

  516. that in fact

  517. God does call

  518. some humans

  519. sons of God.

  520. Jesus makes

  521. an argument.

  522. He says this,

  523. if God called

  524. them gods

  525. to whom

  526. the word of God

  527. came

  528. and scripture

  529. cannot be broken,

  530. Jesus had a high

  531. view of the Bible.

  532. Inerrant,

  533. unbreakable.

  534. Then he turns

  535. to himself.

  536. If God spoke

  537. of that

  538. to just mere men,

  539. then he says,

  540. do you say

  541. of him

  542. whom the Father

  543. consecrated

  544. and sent

  545. into the world

  546. you are blaspheming

  547. because I said

  548. I am the Son of God.

  549. What he's assuming

  550. is he is

  551. greater

  552. than a mere human.

  553. He is

  554. consecrated,

  555. made holy,

  556. set apart

  557. by the Father.

  558. He had been

  559. sent by the Father

  560. in order to

  561. save sinners

  562. by laying his life

  563. down for him,

  564. something only God

  565. could do.

  566. So what Jesus

  567. is saying

  568. is saying

  569. you don't really

  570. know what you're

  571. talking about

  572. and by the way

  573. I am

  574. greater.

  575. I am

  576. claiming that.

  577. I am

  578. saying

  579. in verse 38

  580. 37, 38

  581. if I am not

  582. doing the works

  583. of my Father

  584. then do not

  585. believe me.

  586. He comes back

  587. to this idea

  588. of his works

  589. testifying to

  590. who he is.

  591. It's like

  592. if I'm not

  593. doing the works

  594. of my Father

  595. then don't

  596. believe me.

  597. Don't believe

  598. what I'm saying

  599. about myself.

  600. Don't believe

  601. what I just said

  602. that I and the

  603. Father are one.

  604. If I'm not

  605. doing his works

  606. don't believe that.

  607. Then he says

  608. verse 38

  609. but if I do them

  610. if I am doing

  611. the works

  612. of God

  613. my Father

  614. even though

  615. you do not

  616. believe me

  617. even though

  618. you may not

  619. believe

  620. what I'm saying

  621. about myself

  622. my verbal

  623. claim

  624. that I and

  625. the Father

  626. are one

  627. even though

  628. you don't

  629. believe me

  630. believe the works.

  631. It's proof

  632. in the pudding.

  633. And then he says

  634. that you may

  635. know and understand

  636. that the Father

  637. is in me

  638. and I am

  639. in the Father.

  640. Do you know

  641. what that is?

  642. That the Father

  643. is in me

  644. and I am

  645. in the Father.

  646. That's just

  647. another way

  648. of saying

  649. I and the Father

  650. are one.

  651. He comes

  652. back to this

  653. claim

  654. of being God.

  655. The works

  656. show it.

  657. He's claiming

  658. equality

  659. with God.

  660. That this

  661. healing of the

  662. paralytic

  663. that

  664. that giving

  665. sight to the

  666. blind man

  667. that

  668. that his

  669. soon

  670. raising of

  671. Lazarus

  672. from the

  673. dead

  674. and his

  675. own

  676. giving

  677. of his

  678. life

  679. and being

  680. raised

  681. from the

  682. dead

  683. this all

  684. points

  685. to who

  686. he is.

  687. He is

  688. God in the

  689. flesh.

  690. He is

  691. the Christ

  692. the Son

  693. of God.

  694. in verse

  695. 39

  696. the Jews

  697. seek to

  698. arrest him

  699. because they

  700. don't buy

  701. it.

  702. They still

  703. think that

  704. he's

  705. blaspheming.

  706. They don't

  707. believe that

  708. he's

  709. that this

  710. claim is

  711. true.

  712. And so

  713. we have

  714. these two

  715. titles.

  716. first is

  717. the Christ

  718. all authority

  719. and the

  720. second title

  721. the Son

  722. of God

  723. and Jesus

  724. is the

  725. Son of God

  726. in full

  727. divinity

  728. full

  729. full

  730. godness.

  731. Do you

  732. know what

  733. that means?

  734. He is the

  735. almighty.

  736. He's got

  737. all power.

  738. He just

  739. hasn't been

  740. given authority

  741. over all

  742. things.

  743. He has

  744. power over

  745. all things

  746. to do

  747. what he

  748. sees

  749. best.

  750. He's got

  751. full

  752. authority

  753. full

  754. power.

  755. So

  756. what's

  757. the point?

  758. What's

  759. the point

  760. of this

  761. passage?

  762. This

  763. passage

  764. is the

  765. culmination

  766. of this

  767. tension

  768. that's

  769. been

  770. building

  771. since

  772. chapter

  773. 5

  774. between

  775. Jesus

  776. and

  777. the

  778. Pharisees.

  779. There's

  780. been

  781. this

  782. ongoing

  783. back

  784. and

  785. forth

  786. of

  787. who

  788. Jesus

  789. is

  790. and

  791. whether

  792. these

  793. leaders

  794. were going

  795. to believe

  796. him or

  797. not.

  798. It centers

  799. in this

  800. passage

  801. on those

  802. two

  803. titles

  804. the

  805. Christ

  806. and

  807. the

  808. Son

  809. of

  810. God.

  811. The

  812. Jewish

  813. leaders

  814. refuse

  815. to

  816. believe

  817. that

  818. Jesus

  819. is

  820. the

  821. Christ.

  822. They

  823. refuse

  824. to

  825. believe

  826. that

  827. he

  828. is

  829. the

  830. Son

  831. of

  832. God.

  833. What

  834. they're

  835. doing

  836. is

  837. they're

  838. refusing

  839. to

  840. submit

  841. to

  842. the

  843. all

  844. authoritative

  845. Christ

  846. and

  847. they're

  848. refusing

  849. to

  850. submit

  851. to

  852. God

  853. Almighty

  854. that

  855. he

  856. has

  857. come

  858. to

  859. establish

  860. a

  861. new

  862. kingdom.

  863. In

  864. John

  865. chapter

  866. one

  867. we

  868. read

  869. this

  870. speaking

  871. of

  872. Jesus

  873. he

  874. has

  875. come

  876. to

  877. his

  878. own

  879. and

  880. his

  881. own

  882. did

  883. not

  884. receive

  885. him.

  886. That's

  887. what's

  888. happening

  889. here.

  890. That's

  891. what's

  892. coming

  893. full

  894. into

  895. the

  896. picture

  897. but

  898. those

  899. who

  900. did

  901. receive

  902. him

  903. to

  904. them

  905. he

  906. gave

  907. the

  908. right

  909. to

  910. become

  911. children

  912. of

  913. God.

  914. To

  915. those

  916. who

  917. did

  918. receive

  919. him

  920. as

  921. the

  922. Christ

  923. as

  924. the

  925. Son

  926. of

  927. God

  928. as

  929. the

  930. good

  931. shepherd

  932. who

  933. laid

  934. down

  935. his

  936. life

  937. and

  938. took

  939. it

  940. up

  941. again

  942. to

  943. them

  944. he

  945. gave

  946. the

  947. right

  948. to

  949. become

  950. children

  951. of

  952. God

  953. to

  954. them

  955. he

  956. gave

  957. !

  958. new

  959. life

  960. born

  961. again

  962. to

  963. them

  964. the

  965. Holy

  966. Spirit

  967. would

  968. come

  969. and

  970. indwell

  971. them

  972. and

  973. would

  974. bubble

  975. up

  976. life

  977. as

  978. an

  979. eternal

  980. spring

  981. the

  982. Christ

  983. the

  984. Son

  985. of

  986. God

  987. gives

  988. eternal

  989. life

  990. to

  991. his

  992. sheep

  993. who

  994. hear

  995. his

  996. voice

  997. and

  998. the

  999. good

  1000. news

  1001. this

  1002. morning

  1003. he

  1004. will

  1005. never

  1006. let

  1007. you

  1008. go

  1009. these

  1010. two

  1011. titles

  1012. they

  1013. show

  1014. up

  1015. at

  1016. the

  1017. end

  1018. of

  1019. John

  1020. we

  1021. hit

  1022. this

  1023. before

  1024. it's

  1025. the

  1026. purpose

  1027. statement

  1028. of

  1029. the

  1030. book

  1031. in

  1032. John

    John 20:30

  1033. chapter

  1034. 20

  1035. verses

  1036. 30

  1037. and

  1038. 31

  1039. we

  1040. read

  1041. this

  1042. now

  1043. Jesus

  1044. did

  1045. many

  1046. other

  1047. signs

  1048. in

  1049. the

  1050. presence

  1051. of

  1052. the

  1053. disciples

  1054. which

  1055. are

  1056. not

  1057. written

  1058. in

  1059. this

  1060. book

  1061. but

  1062. these

  1063. are

  1064. written

  1065. so

  1066. that

  1067. you

  1068. may

  1069. believe

  1070. that

  1071. Jesus

  1072. is

  1073. the

  1074. Christ

  1075. the

  1076. Son

  1077. of

  1078. God

  1079. and

  1080. that

  1081. by

  1082. believing

  1083. you

  1084. may

  1085. have

  1086. life

  1087. in

  1088. his

  1089. name

  1090. you

  1091. may

  1092. receive

  1093. the

  1094. abundant

  1095. life

  1096. you

  1097. may

  1098. receive

  1099. eternal

  1100. life

  1101. and

  1102. here's

  1103. where this

  1104. is all

  1105. landing

  1106. no one

  1107. has

  1108. authority

  1109. to snatch

  1110. you out

  1111. of the

  1112. Christ's

  1113. hand

  1114. no one

  1115. has the

  1116. power

  1117. to snatch

  1118. you out

  1119. of the

  1120. hand

  1121. of the

  1122. Son

  1123. of God

  1124. there

  1125. there

  1126. is

  1127. no

  1128. one

  1129. no

  1130. thing

  1131. that

  1132. has

  1133. the

  1134. authority

  1135. or

  1136. power

  1137. to

  1138. take

  1139. you

  1140. from

  1141. Jesus

  1142. because

  1143. his

  1144. all

  1145. authoritative

  1146. all

  1147. powerful

  1148. grip

  1149. has

  1150. no

  1151. rival

  1152. this

  1153. is

  1154. one

  1155. of

  1156. the

  1157. greatest

  1158. of

  1159. all

  1160. assurances

  1161. for

  1162. a

  1163. Christian

  1164. so

  1165. if

  1166. you're

  1167. a

  1168. Christian

  1169. in

  1170. the

  1171. room

  1172. I

  1173. need

  1174. you

  1175. to

  1176. stop

  1177. doing

  1178. something

  1179. this

  1180. is a

  1181. call

  1182. to

  1183. repentance

  1184. here's

  1185. the

  1186. call

  1187. stop

  1188. making

  1189. God

  1190. in

  1191. your

  1192. own

  1193. image

  1194. stop

  1195. stop

  1196. believing

  1197. that

  1198. God

  1199. is

  1200. like

  1201. you

  1202. in

  1203. the

  1204. way

  1205. he's

  1206. committed

  1207. to

  1208. you

  1209. he's

  1210. not

  1211. he's

  1212. all

  1213. authoritative

  1214. and

  1215. he's

  1216. almighty

  1217. and

  1218. he

  1219. loves

  1220. you

  1221. if

  1222. you

  1223. see

  1224. that

  1225. operating

  1226. in

  1227. you

  1228. do

  1229. you

  1230. know

  1231. what

  1232. you

  1233. need

  1234. to

  1235. speak

  1236. to

  1237. that

  1238. that's

  1239. wrong

  1240. that

  1241. is

  1242. not

  1243. the

  1244. God

  1245. of

  1246. the

  1247. Bible

  1248. we

  1249. need

  1250. to

  1251. repent

  1252. of

  1253. making

  1254. God

  1255. into

  1256. our

  1257. own

  1258. image

  1259. the

  1260. other

  1261. side

  1262. of

  1263. that

  1264. is

  1265. to

  1266. rest

  1267. assured

  1268. in

  1510. Jesus

  1511. talking

  1512. here's

  1513. how

  1514. it

  1515. works

  1516. if

  1517. you're

  1518. convinced

  1519. that

  1520. he

  1521. will

  1522. never

  1523. let

  1524. you

  1547. into

  1548. it

  1549. if

  1550. I

  1553. I

  1554. will

  1555. never

  1561. going

  1562. to

  1563. slay

  1564. my

  1565. sin

  1566. this

  1568. not

  1569. an

  1570. excuse

  1571. to

  1572. sin

  1573. this

  1574. is

  1575. an

  1576. assurance

  1577. of

  1578. salvation

  1579. if

  1580. you're

  1581. not

  1582. a

  1583. Christian

  1584. in

  1585. the

  1586. room

  1587. do

  1588. you

  1589. believe

  1590. that

  1591. Jesus

  1592. is

  1593. your

  1594. long

  1595. awaited

  1596. king

  1597. the

  1598. God

  1599. king

  1600. do

  1601. you

  1602. believe

  1603. that

  1604. Jesus

  1605. is

  1606. God

  1607. almighty

  1608. in

  1609. the

  1610. flesh

  1611. who

  1612. laid

  1613. his

  1614. life

  1615. down

  1616. and

  1617. took

  1618. it

  1619. up

  1620. again

  1621. do

  1622. you

  1623. believe

  1624. that

  1625. is

  1626. that

  1627. true

  1628. did

  1629. he

  1630. lay

  1631. his

  1632. life

  1633. down

  1634. for

  1635. you

  1636. and

  1637. take

  1638. it

  1639. up

  1640. again

  1641. is

  1642. that

  1643. true

  1644. the way

  1645. you

  1646. respond

  1647. is

  1648. very

  1649. simple

  1650. the way

  1651. you

  1652. respond

  1653. is by

  1654. just

  1655. saying

  1656. I

  1657. believe

  1658. Jesus

  1659. I

  1660. believe

  1661. I

  1662. hear

  1663. your

  1664. call

  1665. I

  1666. believe

  1667. this

  1668. to be

  1669. true

  1670. and

  1671. I

  1672. will

  1673. follow

  1674. you

  1675. as

  1676. my

  1677. good

  1678. shepherd

  1679. !

  1680. you

  1681. you

  1682. you

  1683. and

  1684. you

  1685. put

  1686. your

  1687. faith

  1688. in

  1689. Jesus

  1690. he

  1691. lays

  1692. hold

  1693. of

  1694. you

  1695. and

  1696. he

  1697. will

  1698. never

  1699. let

  1700. you

  1701. go

  1702. and

  1703. then

  1704. you

  1705. come

  1706. follow

  1707. Jesus

  1708. with

  1709. the

  1710. rest

  1711. of

  1712. the

  1713. flock

  1714. together

  1715. following

  1716. Jesus

  1717. we

  1718. hold

  1719. fast

  1720. to

  1721. him

  1722. knowing

  1723. that

  1724. his

  1725. goodness

  1726. will

  1727. never

  1728. let

  1729. us

  1730. go

  1731. he

  1732. holds

  1733. fast

  1734. to

  1735. us

  1736. this

  1737. passage

  1738. ends

  1739. in

  1740. verses

  1741. 40

  1742. and

  1743. 42

  1744. and

  1745. it

  1746. ends

  1747. in a

  1748. very

  1749. different

  1750. place

  1751. than

  1752. where

  1753. we

  1754. began

  1755. it

  1756. ends

  1757. with

  1758. Jesus

  1759. going

  1760. across

  1761. the

  1762. Jordan

  1763. into

  1764. the

  1765. wilderness

  1766. where

  1767. John

  1768. the

  1769. Baptist

  1770. had

  1771. begun

  1772. his

  1773. baptizing

  1774. ministry

  1775. it's

  1776. very

  1777. interesting

  1778. and

  1779. all

  1780. sorts

  1781. of

  1782. people

  1783. come

  1784. to

  1785. Jesus

  1786. at

  1787. that

  1788. point

  1789. and

  1790. they

  1791. believe

  1792. in

  1793. him

  1794. based

  1795. upon

  1796. John

  1797. the

  1798. Baptist

  1799. we're

  1800. in

  1801. Jerusalem

  1802. Jesus

  1803. is

  1804. surrounded

  1805. by

  1806. the

  1807. Pharisees

  1808. and

  1809. it's

  1810. Jesus

  1811. speaking

  1812. to

  1813. them

  1814. and

  1815. they

  1816. don't

  1817. believe

  1818. it

  1819. ends

  1820. with

  1821. Jesus

  1822. in

  1823. the

  1824. wilderness

  1825. not

  1826. Jerusalem

  1827. you'd

  1828. think

  1829. hey

  1830. all the

  1831. godly

  1832. people

  1833. are

  1834. Jerusalem

  1835. not

  1836. in

  1837. the

  1838. wilderness

  1839. and

  1840. all

  1841. of

  1842. these

  1843. people

  1844. gather

  1845. to

  1846. Jesus

  1847. they

  1848. surround

  1849. him

  1850. not

  1851. because

  1852. of

  1853. what

  1854. Jesus

  1855. has

  1856. said

  1857. but

  1858. because

  1859. of

  1860. what

  1861. John

  1862. the

  1863. Baptist

  1864. had

  1865. said

  1866. who's

  1867. now

  1868. dead

  1869. they

  1870. believe

  1871. to

  1872. believe

  1873. they

  1874. believe

  1875. that

  1876. he's

  1877. the

  1878. Christ

  1879. that

  1880. he's

  1881. the

  1882. son

  1883. of

  1884. God

  1885. these

  1886. are

  1887. sheep

  1888. coming

  1889. to

  1890. their

  1891. shepherd

  1892. and

  1893. it's

  1894. there

  1895. in the

  1896. wilderness

  1897. we see

  1898. belief

  1899. not in

  1900. Jerusalem

  1901. ironic

  1902. John

  1903. is a

  1904. master

  1905. master

  1906. storyteller

  1907. this

  1908. morning

  1909. we've

  1910. heard

  1911. good

  1912. news

  1913. not only

  1914. does

  1915. the

  1916. goodness

  1917. of

  1918. Jesus

  1919. run

  1920. red

  1921. the

  1922. goodness

  1923. of

  1924. Jesus

  1925. will

  1926. never

  1927. let

  1928. you

  1929. go

  1930. and

  1931. it's

  1932. because

  1933. of

  1934. him

  1935. not

  1936. us

  1937. let's

  1938. pray

  1939. God

  1940. in

  1941. heaven

  1942. we do

  1943. thank

  1944. you

  1945. so

  1946. much

  1947. for

  1948. this

  1949. assurance

  1950. this

  1951. this

  1952. blessed

  1953. assurance

  1954. of

  1955. these

  1956. words

  1957. no

  1958. one

  1959. will

  1960. snatch

  1961. them

  1962. from

  1963. my

  1964. hand

  1965. God

  1966. would

  1967. you

  1968. impress

  1969. that

  1970. upon

  1971. us

  1972. your

  1973. sheep

  1974. that

  1975. this

  1976. week

  1977. we

  1978. would

  1979. walk

  1980. through

  1981. this

  1982. week

  1983. with

  1984. this

  1985. word

  1986. unsnatchable

  1987. echoing

  1988. through

  1989. our

  1990. heads

  1991. thank

  1992. you

  1993. Lord

  1994. Jesus

  1995. that

  1996. our

  1997. assurance

  1998. is not

  1999. grounded

  2000. in our

  2001. performance

  2002. but

  2003. in your

  2004. very

  2005. nature

  2006. in

  2007. Jesus

  2008. name

  2009. we

  2010. pray

  2011. amen
