  1. You may be seated.

  2. As I mentioned in my prayer, we're in John chapter 11.

    John 11 chapter mention

  3. ! If you want to turn to your Bibles right now, it's on page 1066 of your pew Bible.

  4. And as you're turning there, has anybody recognized the name Jonathan Edwards?

  5. Jonathan Edwards is known, most well known for his sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.

  6. But over the course of two years of his life, he wrote a number of what he calls the resolutions.

  7. There's 70 resolutions.

  8. And he would weekly read these resolutions so that he could live fully for Jesus.

  9. The thing about it is he wrote the first 21 when he was at the tender age of 17.

  10. And then he wrote the rest when he was 18.

  11. Listen to these three.

  12. 17-year-old.

  13. Resolution 9.

  14. Resolved.

  15. To think much on all occasions of my dying and of the common circumstances which attend death.

  16. Or number 17.

  17. Resolved.

  18. That I will live so as I shall wish I had done when I come to die.

  19. Or when he was 18.

  20. Resolution 43.

  21. Resolved.

  22. Never henceforth.

  23. Till I die.

  24. To act as if I were in any way my own.

  25. But entirely and altogether God's.

  26. Teenager.

  27. Which becomes evident as you read through the resolutions.

  28. This man is given to the Lord.

  29. And it doesn't seem like he fears death.

  30. For us, it's kind of a different story.

  31. We tend to fear death, don't we?

  32. We, when we think about our dying, we can get a little nervous.

  33. In fact, we have come up with our own language for it.

  34. Listen to some of the words and phrases we use for death.

  35. He's no longer with us.

  36. She passed away.

  37. He expired.

  38. She's in a better place.

  39. Death is harsh.

  40. We don't like being confronted by it.

  41. Let alone our own deaths.

  42. So when you think about your own death, where does your mind go?

  43. Are you kind of like this?

  44. La, la, la, la, la.

  45. I'm not listening.

  46. Or do you go logistics?

  47. I want to have everything lined up so when I die, those who come after me, they're all set up.

  48. That's what you focus on.

  49. Or maybe when you think about the process of dying, you start thinking, well, I don't want to die that way.

  50. But what happens after you breathe your last?

  51. What is in store for you and me?

  52. After we breathe our last?

  53. Here's the truth of it.

  54. Unless Jesus returns, everyone in this room will die.

  55. Everyone.

  56. We will all breathe our last breath.

  57. And this morning, Jesus has good news.

  58. Both in something he says and something he does.

  59. It's good news for those who are facing death.

  60. John 11 is the account when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead.

  61. It is the seventh sign of the book of John, of John's gospel.

  62. And in this account, this whole chapter, all 57 verses, it unfolds in four scenes.

  63. Scene one is a surprise.

  64. Scene two is a confrontation.

  65. Scene three is glory.

  66. Give me a glory.

  67. Oh, man.

  68. Scene one.

  69. And then scene four is a targeting.

  70. What Jesus says and does in this passage will help you anticipate your own death.

  71. But not in fear.

  72. Less and less fear.

  73. In more and more hope.

  74. Trust.

  75. Trust.

  76. Because Jesus has authority over death.

  77. He has authority over your death.

  78. So let's look at scene one, a surprise.

  79. Because of the amount of verses we got to cover, I'm just going to be summarizing things.

  80. And I'm going to ask you just to kind of hold on as we go through, all right?

  81. So scene one, verses one through 16.

  82. If you remember last week, Jesus had this confrontation with the Pharisees over two titles.

  83. Christ and the Son of God.

  84. And they seek to arrest him.

  85. So Jesus bolts.

  86. He leaves.

  87. It's not his time to die.

  88. So Jesus is out of town, out of Jerusalem.

  89. And that's where we pick up in verse 11.

  90. I'll just read these first five verses.

  91. Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

  92. It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair.

  93. We'll read that account next week.

  94. Well, their brother Lazarus was ill.

  95. So the sisters sent to Jesus, who was out of town, saying, Lord, he who you love is ill.

  96. But when Jesus heard it, he said, this illness does not lead to death.

  97. It is for the glory of God.

  98. So that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  99. Anyway, so Jesus is across the Jordan when Lazarus gets sick.

  100. And we're introduced to Lazarus.

  101. We're introduced to his sisters, Mary and Martha.

  102. This was a sibling group who lived in Bethany.

  103. And Jesus had a particularly unique relationship with them.

  104. What we're going to see as this unfolds is that Martha and Mary are two very different women.

  105. And they have a similar question for Jesus.

  106. In verse 5, I just want you to note, now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

  107. So right out of the gate, John is helping us to see that Jesus' motives in this whole story is one of love and of God's glory.

  108. Well, in verse 3, Mary and Martha send word to Jesus, he whom you love is ill.

  109. It's getting at a unique relationship between Jesus and Lazarus.

  110. They must have been buddies.

  111. But this isn't just kind of like an FYI.

  112. So don't you know, Jesus?

  113. This is Jesus.

  114. Lazarus is seriously ill.

  115. We know you can heal him.

  116. Would you please come?

  117. And so Jesus responds in verse 4.

  118. And now he's talking to his disciples.

  119. This illness does not lead to death.

  120. It's for the glory of God.

  121. So that the Son of God may be glorified through it.

  122. What Jesus knows in advance, before any of this significantly unfolds,

  123. is that what's going to happen is for his glory.

  124. There's going to be a revelation.

  125. There's going to be something spectacular.

  126. Jesus is going to be revealed.

  127. The Son of God is going to be revealed in a new way.

  128. It's the seventh sign of the Gospel of John.

  129. Think of that word glorify.

  130. As a revelation of something amazing about God.

  131. And what Jesus is saying here is that the Son of God is going to be exalted.

  132. He's going to be made new through this illness.

  133. In verses 5 and 6, we again read,

  134. Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

  135. But there's a connection.

  136. Look at it.

  137. Jesus loved them so because he loved them.

  138. Because he loved him.

  139. When he heard that Lazarus was ill, he stayed two days longer in the place where he was.

  140. Now that's surprising.

  141. Because I thought, hey, Jesus, if he really is your buddy,

  142. if you got word that he's sick and it's serious, boy, wouldn't you just pack up and go?

  143. But in love, he stayed two more days.

  144. There's something else operating here.

  145. We know that he loves them, but he's waiting.

  146. And then there is this whole thing.

  147. It's about God's glory.

  148. In verses 7 and 8, we start learning what he's been waiting for.

  149. Then after this, he said to his disciples,

  150. Let's go.

  151. Now Judea is home of Jerusalem, also Bethany.

  152. And his disciples in verse 8 have an objection.

  153. Rabbi, the Jews were just now seeking to stone you.

  154. And are you going there again?

  155. It hasn't been a week, Jesus.

  156. They were looking to kill you.

  157. Why do you want to go back?

  158. Reasonable.

  159. Then Jesus says,

  160. Are there not 12 hours in the day?

  161. What he's getting at is this.

  162. His time on earth is coming to an end.

  163. And he is going to walk in the light.

  164. He's going to do his Father's will.

  165. Those who walk in the darkness don't do God's will,

  166. but those who walk in the light do.

  167. And he's going to be committed.

  168. And he has an appointment in Bethany at a tomb.

  169. And then there's this classic misunderstanding.

  170. After saying these things, Jesus says,

  171. Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.

  172. I've got to go wake him up.

  173. Disciples are like,

  174. Lord, if he's asleep, that's good.

  175. He needs to recover.

  176. He needs to get his sleep.

  177. And Jesus is like,

  178. You're totally missing what I'm saying.

  179. It's this misunderstanding we've been seeing

  180. through the Gospel of John.

  181. And Jesus says very plainly,

  182. Verse 14,

  183. Lazarus has died.

  184. And then he says,

  185. And for your sake,

  186. I'm glad that I was not there,

  187. so that you may believe.

  188. But let us go to him.

  189. He's not glad Lazarus died.

  190. He's glad at the opportunity

  191. this is affording his disciples

  192. to see his glory on display.

  193. And so, of all people,

  194. Thomas, as in doubting Thomas,

  195. chapter 20,

  196. Let's go die with him!

  197. Nobody understands what's going on here.

  198. Nobody knows what's coming.

  199. Why doesn't he go?

  200. There's something bigger and better

  201. that he's after.

  202. There's something bigger and better

  203. that he's going to reveal.

  204. This is about his glory.

  205. I want to point something out.

  206. Nowhere,

  207. nowhere here,

  208. do you have any sense

  209. that Jesus asked Lazarus' permission

  210. to do what he's about to do.

  211. Nowhere does he ask Martha or Mary

  212. if it's okay,

  213. Hey, guys,

  214. like a month earlier,

  215. I'm going to do something in a month

  216. that's going to be really difficult.

  217. You just hang in there with me.

  218. He's doing what he wants to do.

  219. There's something else

  220. that I want to see.

  221. Have you ever prayed

  222. to the Lord?

  223. Have you ever sent word

  224. to the Lord?

  225. Lord,

  226. I'm regularly praying

  227. for a couple people

  228. in our family

  229. that I dearly love.

  230. Lord,

  231. would you do this?

  232. Please do this.

  233. I know you can do this.

  234. But he doesn't do it.

  235. He doesn't show up.

  236. Anybody experience that in the room?

  237. Something else is going on, gang.

  238. He's working off

  239. a different economy.

  240. What we know from this text

  241. that he loves his own.

  242. And he's working for his glory.

  243. There's a greater glory coming.

  244. That's scene one.

  245. Jesus surprisingly stays put.

  246. Scene two,

  247. Jesus is confronted.

  248. He's confronted by

  249. Lazarus' two sisters.

  250. And this is in verses 17 through 37.

  251. In 17 through 19,

  252. Jesus arrives

  253. outside of Bethany.

  254. Again,

  255. it's 1.75 miles

  256. from Jerusalem.

  257. And so it's to remind you

  258. that there are people

  259. who want to kill Jesus

  260. just down the street.

  261. A lot of people are there

  262. in Mary and Martha's home.

  263. They're from Jerusalem.

  264. They're there to comfort them.

  265. And it's also another thing

  266. to remind you,

  267. word can get out

  268. that Jesus is in town.

  269. If you'll notice

  270. in verse 20,

  271. when Martha hears

  272. that Jesus was coming,

  273. she went and met him,

  274. but Mary remains seated

  275. in the house.

  276. These are two very different women.

  277. Two different people.

  278. They have two very different temperaments.

  279. And in verses 20 and 27,

  280. Martha confronts Jesus.

  281. And let me just point out,

  282. Jesus didn't call her.

  283. She went.

  284. She hears that he's like

  285. down the street

  286. and she's gone.

  287. She goes.

  288. It's quite an interesting exchange.

  289. She says,

  290. why didn't you come?

  291. Look at verse 21.

  292. Lord, if you had been here,

  293. my brother would not have died.

  294. Lord, we send word to you.

  295. If you had been here,

  296. Lazarus would still be breathing.

  297. I know what you're capable of.

  298. And so there's this sense of like,

  299. why didn't you come?

  300. In verse 22,

  301. it sounds like Martha

  302. is asking Jesus to pray

  303. that God would raise him

  304. from the dead.

  305. Listen to what she says.

  306. But even now,

  307. I know that whatever you ask

  308. from God,

  309. God will give you.

  310. It kind of sounds like that,

  311. but that's actually

  312. not what she's saying.

  313. And we're going to see that

  314. played out as we go along.

  315. What she's actually saying

  316. is more like this.

  317. Okay,

  318. I don't get what you're doing,

  319. but I know you got

  320. a connection with God,

  321. so you have your reasons.

  322. And I trust you,

  323. even though I don't know

  324. why you didn't come.

  325. It's something of faith.

  326. And then in verse 23,

  327. Jesus says to you,

  328. your brother will rise again.

  329. Now for us,

  330. who know the story,

  331. we're like,

  332. oh yeah,

  333. he's going to rise again.

  334. But not Martha.

  335. Look how she interprets it.

  336. I know,

  337. verse 24,

  338. I know that he will rise again

  339. in the resurrection

  340. on that last day.

  341. That the last day,

  342. all will be raised up

  343. and separated

  344. to be judged.

  345. That's Revelation chapter 20.

    Revelation 20 chapter mention

  346. That's Matthew chapter 25.

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  347. All good Jews believed that.

  348. I know that there's a coming day,

  349. chronologically speaking,

  350. there's a coming day

  351. when he will be raised

  352. from the dead.

  353. And then Jesus does

  354. something remarkable.

  355. He takes a chronological day

  356. and he makes it personal.

  357. I am the resurrection

  358. and the life.

  359. I want you,

  360. Martha,

  361. not to be focused

  362. on a day.

  363. I want you focused

  364. on me.

  365. To believe in me.

  366. This,

  367. I am the resurrection

  368. and the life

  369. is the fifth

  370. I am statement

  371. in the gospel of John.

  372. And it does us well

  373. to ask,

  374. what is he saying?

  375. Why is he saying this?

  376. So when he says,

  377. I am the resurrection,

  378. day,

  379. personal.

  380. He's got the power

  381. to raise

  382. on the last day.

  383. And so if you read

  384. the rest of verse 25,

  385. it says,

  386. whoever believes in me,

  387. though he die physically,

  388. the day is set,

  389. yet shall he live.

  390. In other words,

  391. hey,

  392. don't focus on the day,

  393. focus on me,

  394. because when you die,

  395. you will live again

  396. if you believe in me.

  397. I will raise you

  398. from the dead.

  399. But there's more.

  400. Just not a chronological moment.

  401. There's a qualitative

  402. aspect to this.

  403. So when he says,

  404. I am the resurrection

  405. and the life,

  406. he's speaking qualitatively.

  407. Listen to what he says

  408. in verse 26.

  409. And everyone who lives

  410. and believes in me

  411. shall never die.

  412. You may die physically,

  413. but the moment you believe

  414. in me,

  415. I give you eternal life.

  416. In other words,

  417. eternal life doesn't start

  418. when you die.

  419. Eternal life begins

  420. when you believe.

  421. So if you believe

  422. in Jesus Christ,

  423. eternal life has come.

  424. Abundant life.

  425. So what Jesus is getting

  426. at here is both

  427. a qualitative life

  428. as well as

  429. a chronological aspect.

  430. It's like,

  431. I've got all of your life

  432. in my hands.

  433. I'm the giver of life.

  434. I'm the bread of life.

  435. I'm the water of life.

  436. I am the way,

  437. the truth,

  438. and the life.

  439. I came

  440. that they might have life

  441. and might have it

  442. abundantly.

  443. abundantly.

  444. What Jesus is saying

  445. to her is

  446. something bigger

  447. than resurrection days here.

  448. And then he asks her,

  449. do you believe this?

  450. Do you believe in me?

  451. You see,

  452. all the word believes,

  453. there's three of them

  454. in this passage,

  455. these two verses.

  456. And she says,

  457. yes, Lord,

  458. I believe that you

  459. are the Christ,

  460. the Son of God,

  461. who's coming into the world.

  462. This was the titles

  463. that the whole kind of

  464. fight was over

  465. in John 10.

  466. The Christ,

  467. the Son of God.

  468. This is what we see

  469. at the end of John

  470. in chapter 20.

  471. All of these signs

  472. are to demonstrate

  473. Jesus is the Christ,

  474. the Son of God,

  475. that you would believe in him

  476. and by believing,

  477. you live.

  478. Martha,

  479. do you believe this?

  480. She's the first sister

  481. who confronts Jesus

  482. and Jesus reveals

  483. something about himself.

  484. Do you get the sense

  485. of what Jesus is saying?

  486. When he says,

  487. I am the resurrection

  488. and the life,

  489. that is a God-sized claim.

  490. He's claiming,

  491. I am the giver of life,

  492. I have authority over death.

  493. And then,

  494. in verses 28 through 37,

  495. Mary,

  496. a very different woman

  497. than Martha.

  498. In 28,

  499. Jesus sends Mary

  500. to go tell Martha,

  501. to go tell Mary,

  502. the teacher's calling for you.

  503. So,

  504. unlike Martha,

  505. Mary is called

  506. and Mary gets up right away

  507. and goes

  508. and then those people

  509. who are comforting

  510. and consoling her,

  511. they get up and go

  512. because they're thinking

  513. she's going to the grave,

  514. she's going to weep some more,

  515. but she actually brings them

  516. to Jesus.

  517. And when she gets to Jesus,

  518. verse 32,

  519. she fell at his feet.

  520. Martha didn't fall at his feet.

  521. I think Martha

  522. was probably looking

  523. at him nose to nose.

  524. Mary fell at his feet.

  525. Two very different women.

  526. Jesus loves them both.

  527. and notice what she says.

  528. Lord,

  529. if you had been here,

  530. my brother would not have died.

  531. Does that sound familiar?

  532. Look at verse 21.

  533. Martha said to Jesus,

  534. Lord,

  535. if you had been here,

  536. my brother would not have died.

  537. Two very different women,

  538. very different temperaments,

  539. wrestling with the same thing.

  540. Where were you?

  541. We sent for you.

  542. We know you loved Lazarus.

  543. You are able to heal him.

  544. Where were you?

  545. And when Jesus responds to Martha,

  546. he drops the,

  547. I am the resurrection

  548. and the life.

  549. Do you believe this?

  550. The way he responds to Mary.

  551. He sees Mary weeping.

  552. He sees those weeping with her.

  553. Verse 33.

  554. And then he was deeply moved

  555. in his spirit

  556. and greatly troubled.

  557. And when you hear

  558. greatly troubled,

  559. deeply moved in his spirit,

  560. you may be thinking,

  561. oh,

  562. he was overwhelmed

  563. with sadness.

  564. But when you do a word study

  565. on this little phrase,

  566. deeply moved,

  567. by the way,

  568. it shows up in verse 38,

  569. deeply moved.

  570. Do you know how it's used

  571. throughout the rest

  572. of the New Testament?

  573. Stern rebuke.

  574. Indignation.

  575. Holy anger.

  576. Jesus sees all this weeping

  577. and it's safe to say

  578. he gets angry.

  579. And out of his anger,

  580. he asks,

  581. where did you lay him?

  582. I'm going to do something

  583. about this.

  584. And he is told,

  585. come see.

  586. And in verse 35,

  587. Jesus wept.

  588. In that moment,

  589. he goes from being indignant

  590. to weeping.

  591. Jesus is mad.

  592. Sad and mad.

  593. He's experiencing

  594. the full range

  595. of human emotions

  596. kind of surrounding grief.

  597. Anybody been angry

  598. when somebody dies before?

  599. Anybody been sad?

  600. Yes.

  601. Jesus is experiencing

  602. the full range

  603. of humanity.

  604. And he does it

  605. without sinning.

  606. He weeps.

  607. He's angry.

  608. And he's like,

  609. show me

  610. where you buried him.

  611. What's striking

  612. about this

  613. is that we have

  614. two very different

  615. human beings,

  616. Martha and Mary.

  617. and they are

  618. confronting Jesus

  619. and struggling

  620. with the same thing

  621. and they say it verbatim.

  622. Lord, if you had been here,

  623. my brother

  624. would still be alive.

  625. How many times

  626. have we said

  627. something similar?

  628. Lord, if you had moved,

  629. if you had done

  630. what I asked,

  631. then we wouldn't

  632. be dealing with this.

  633. it's a soft questioning.

  634. Jesus, do you know

  635. what you're doing?

  636. He's operating

  637. for a glory.

  638. He's got something else,

  639. something bigger

  640. and better in mind.

  641. In this passage,

  642. following both

  643. of these confrontations,

  644. we learn something

  645. about Jesus.

  646. One, that he's

  647. totally God.

  648. I am the resurrection

  649. and the life.

  650. And we learn

  651. that he's totally man.

  652. We see him experience

  653. the fullness

  654. of human emotions.

  655. He's angry

  656. and he's sad.

  657. And now he's

  658. going to do something.

  659. The Jews that are there

  660. who had followed Mary,

  661. some see him

  662. responding the way he is

  663. and they're like,

  664. oh, how,

  665. he just loved Lazarus

  666. so much.

  667. And then others

  668. are there

  669. and they're like,

  670. wait, wait,

  671. hold on a second.

  672. Isn't this the guy

  673. that healed the blind,

  674. man born blind?

  675. Couldn't he have

  676. stopped this

  677. from happening?

  678. They don't have

  679. any idea

  680. what's about to happen.

  681. Which brings us

  682. to scene three.

  683. Glory.

  684. Give it to me.

  685. Oh, that was weak.

  686. I'm going to say glory.

  687. You give it back.

  688. Glory.

  689. Glory.

  690. Okay, here we go.

  691. In verses 38 through 44,

  692. Jesus raises Lazarus

  693. from the death

  694. and there's been

  695. quite a build up

  696. to this moment,

  697. hasn't there.

  698. We've covered

  699. a lot of ground

  700. leading up to this point.

  701. Now Jesus is on the scene.

  702. He's in Bethany

  703. and he has showed up

  704. to the tomb

  705. and he's deeply moved,

  706. verse 38.

  707. He's hot.

  708. He's angry.

  709. He's indignant.

  710. He's sad,

  711. but he's angry.

  712. What's he going to do?

  713. He's made the claim,

  714. I am the resurrection

  715. and the life.

  716. And now he's going

  717. to demonstrate it.

  718. In verse 38,

  719. deeply moved again,

  720. he comes to the tomb.

  721. Jesus says,

  722. take away the stone.

  723. You got to hear the tone.

  724. Where is his body?

  725. Take away the stone.

  726. It's not because the stone

  727. is going to get in the way

  728. of what he's about to do.

  729. It's going to get in the way

  730. of the guy coming out.

  731. Martha,

  732. the direct sister,

  733. says,

  734. Lord, by this time

  735. there will be an odor

  736. for he has been dead

  737. for days.

  738. His body

  739. has already started to decay.

  740. If you open that up

  741. there's going to be a stink.

  742. This is why

  743. I think

  744. back in verse 22

  745. she's not asking

  746. Jesus to ask God

  747. to raise Lazarus

  748. from the dead.

  749. She has no idea

  750. what's going on here.

  751. Jesus says to her,

  752. did I not tell you

  753. that if you believed

  754. you would see

  755. the glory of God?

  756. There's no record

  757. of he saying that

  758. to Martha.

  759. There is record of that

  760. in verse 4

  761. to his disciples

  762. this illness

  763. does not lead to death.

  764. It is for the glory

  765. of God

  766. so that the Son of God

  767. may be glorified

  768. through it.

  769. There must have been

  770. something said

  771. that John doesn't record

  772. that Jesus is saying

  773. Martha,

  774. I'm going to be glorified

  775. through this.

  776. And then in

  777. verse 41,

  778. 42,

  779. Jesus prays.

  780. He thanks God

  781. for what is about

  782. to happen.

  783. It's another indicator

  784. that Jesus is doing

  785. the works of his Father

  786. and he's already

  787. giving thanks to God

  788. and asking God

  789. to use what is about

  790. to happen

  791. in this display

  792. of his glory

  793. to cause belief,

  794. to result in belief

  795. in those present.

  796. And then in verse 43,

  797. it would be like this.

  798. Think volume.

  799. God,

  800. thank you so much

  801. for hearing me.

  802. End of the prayer.

  803. He steps back

  804. and then you see

  805. his veins in his neck

  806. pop out.

  807. Lazarus,

  808. come out!

  809. It was a voice.

  810. There's this quip

  811. among preachers.

  812. It goes something

  813. like this.

  814. if Jesus had not

  815. specified Lazarus,

  816. then all of the dead

  817. in all of the world

  818. would have come out

  819. at that moment.

  820. But he did specify

  821. Lazarus.

  822. And by the way,

  823. when he says,

  824. Lazarus,

  825. come out,

  826. he's just not saying,

  827. come out of the cave,

  828. Lazarus.

  829. He's saying,

  830. come out of death,

  831. Lazarus.

  832. And he says,

  833. 44,

  834. the man who is dead

  835. comes out.

  836. Jesus says,

  837. unbind him,

  838. let him go.

  839. The burial cloths

  840. would have been

  841. restricted.

  842. Anybody seen

  843. any zombie movies

  844. lately?

  845. It's not like,

  846. that's not how

  847. Lazarus came out.

  848. Lazarus probably

  849. came out,

  850. I don't know,

  851. but he wasn't

  852. decaying anymore.

  853. He wasn't

  854. half living.

  855. He didn't have

  856. a limb falling off.

  857. At the very next

  858. chapter,

  859. this same Lazarus

  860. is seated

  861. at table

  862. with Jesus

  863. at a feast.

  864. He's been

  865. restored,

  866. resurrected

  867. and restored.

  868. He's not been

  869. given a resurrected

  870. body,

  871. but he's back

  872. to health.

  873. He's been

  874. raised from the

  875. dead,

  876. he's no longer

  877. sick.

  878. And what's striking

  879. is,

  880. nowhere in this

  881. chapter does

  882. Lazarus say

  883. anything.

  884. Lazarus,

  885. come out.

  886. Now,

  887. if you were

  888. there,

  889. Lazarus comes

  890. out,

  891. I would be

  892. like,

  893. what?

  894. He was just

  895. dead.

  896. This never

  897. happens.

  898. And then,

  899. it would dawn

  900. on me,

  901. the guy that

  902. just told him

  903. to come out

  904. with just

  905. words.

  906. He didn't go

  907. in with those

  908. electric shocker

  909. things.

  910. He didn't go

  911. in with some

  912. kind of

  913. soup.

  914. With just

  915. words,

  916. Lazarus came

  917. out.

  918. The one who

  919. created all

  920. things with

  921. just words

  922. speaks to a

  923. dead man,

  924. and death

  925. obeys.

  926. Death gives

  927. up.

  928. He gives

  929. up,

  930. Lazarus.

  931. Totally

  932. God,

  933. totally

  934. man.

  935. God

  936. incarnate,

  937. almighty,

  938. he is the

  939. Christ,

  940. the son of

  941. God.

  942. He has

  943. authority over

  944. all things,

  945. including

  946. death.

  947. It's a good

  948. thing he

  949. just limited

  950. to Lazarus,

  951. otherwise there

  952. would have

  953. been a,

  954. like the

  955. resurrection

  956. of the

  957. last day,

  958. which is

  959. going to

  960. happen.

  961. if Jesus

  962. was able

  963. to raise

  964. Lazarus

  965. from the

  966. dead,

  967. who he

  968. loved,

  969. he is

  970. more than

  971. able to

  972. raise you,

  973. Christian,

  974. from the

  975. dead,

  976. who he

  977. loves.

  978. So if you

  979. are a

  980. believer,

  981. you've already

  982. been given

  983. eternal life,

  984. that eternal

  985. life has begun,

  986. you will die

  987. one day,

  988. but you

  989. don't need

  990. to fear

  991. it,

  992. because there's

  993. coming a

  994. day when

  995. Jesus will

  996. say,

  997. Michael,

  998. come out!

  999. You think I

  1000. can resist

  1001. that?

  1002. You think you

  1003. can resist

  1004. that?

  1005. I'm talking

  1006. about.

  1007. In verses

  1008. 45 through

  1009. 53,

  1010. targeted,

  1011. Jesus is

  1012. targeted.

  1013. In verses

  1014. 45 and 46,

  1015. there's this

  1016. mixed response.

  1017. Some of the

  1018. Jews there

  1019. who see this

  1020. happen,

  1021. instead of

  1022. believing,

  1023. they're like,

  1024. oh no,

  1025. we're going to

  1026. go to Jerusalem

  1027. and tattletale

  1028. on Jesus to

  1029. the Pharisees.

  1030. And so they

  1031. tattletale on

  1032. Jesus,

  1033. and then the

  1034. Pharisees,

  1035. they call this

  1036. emergency meeting

  1037. of the Sanhedrin,

  1038. the council.

  1039. We see that

  1040. in verse 47.

  1041. And they say,

  1042. what are we

  1043. going to do?

  1044. For this man

  1045. performs many

  1046. signs.

  1047. There's no

  1048. denying that

  1049. he just

  1050. raised a

  1051. dead man.

  1052. If we let

  1053. him go on

  1054. like this,

  1055. keep doing

  1056. these miracles,

  1057. everyone's

  1058. going to

  1059. believe.

  1060. That's

  1061. ironic.

  1062. And the

  1063. Romans will

  1064. come and

  1065. take away

  1066. both our

  1067. place and

  1068. our nation.

  1069. So now

  1070. you see

  1071. what they're

  1072. really concerned

  1073. about.

  1074. Their

  1075. temple,

  1076. their

  1077. people,

  1078. their

  1079. position.

  1080. This is

  1081. prophetic.

  1082. Because in

  1083. 70 AD,

  1084. the Roman

  1085. general

  1086. Titus

  1087. comes to

  1088. Jerusalem.

  1089. He sacks

  1090. Jerusalem,

  1091. the temple

  1092. is destroyed,

  1093. and the

  1094. Israel people

  1095. get scattered.

  1096. It's prophetic

  1097. in one sense.

  1098. But there's

  1099. more prophecy.

  1100. the chief

  1101. priest of

  1102. the time,

  1103. of that

  1104. year,

  1105. his name

  1106. was

  1107. Caiaphas.

  1108. And he

  1109. comes on

  1110. the scene

  1111. in verse

  1112. 49,

  1113. and he

  1114. says in

  1115. verse 49,

  1116. you know

  1117. nothing at

  1118. all.

  1119. It's kind

  1120. of like him

  1121. saying,

  1122. duh.

  1123. And then in

  1124. verse 50,

  1125. nor do you

  1126. understand that

  1127. it is better

  1128. for you that

  1129. one man should

  1130. die for the

  1131. people,

  1132. not the whole

  1133. nation should

  1134. perish.

  1135. Well,

  1136. that's

  1137. interesting.

  1138. That one

  1139. man should

  1140. die for the

  1141. people?

  1142. That there

  1143. should be a

  1144. substitute?

  1145. One die

  1146. for many?

  1147. What is he

  1148. saying?

  1149. Caiaphas,

  1150. who doesn't

  1151. believe that

  1152. Jesus is the

  1153. Christ,

  1154. the Son of

  1155. God,

  1156. he's not

  1157. thinking that

  1158. Jesus is the

  1159. Savior from

  1160. people from

  1161. their sins.

  1162. He's seeing

  1163. him more as

  1164. a scapegoat

  1165. so that they

  1166. can hold on

  1167. to their

  1168. power,

  1169. hold on to

  1170. their position,

  1171. hold on to

  1172. the status

  1173. quo.

  1174. But for

  1175. those of us

  1176. who believe,

  1177. we hear that

  1178. and we're

  1179. like,

  1180. he has no

  1181. idea what

  1182. he's saying.

  1183. This is good

  1184. news to my

  1185. ears.

  1186. And that's

  1187. exactly what

  1188. John helps

  1189. us to see in

  1190. verse 51.

  1191. John,

  1192. the gospel

  1193. writer,

  1194. steps in.

  1195. He did not

  1196. say this of

  1197. his own

  1198. accord,

  1199. but being

  1200. high priest

  1201. that year,

  1202. he prophesied

  1203. that Jesus

  1204. would die for

  1205. the nation.

  1206. And not for

  1207. the nation

  1208. only,

  1209. not just for

  1210. the Jews.

  1211. He would

  1212. die,

  1213. but also

  1214. to gather

  1215. into one

  1216. the children

  1217. of God

  1218. who are

  1219. scattered abroad.

  1220. All those

  1221. of God's

  1222. elect that

  1223. he had set

  1224. his love on

  1225. before the

  1226. foundation of

  1227. the world,

  1228. and he's

  1229. going to

  1230. call to

  1231. himself from

  1232. all around

  1233. the world,

  1234. every tribe,

  1235. tongue,

  1236. and nation.

  1237. He's going to

  1238. gather them

  1239. together into

  1240. one flock

  1241. with one

  1242. shepherd.

  1243. Jesus is

  1244. our

  1245. substitute.

  1246. He brings

  1247. about a

  1248. new nation,

  1249. a new

  1250. kingdom,

  1251. the church.

  1252. Instead of

  1253. believing,

  1254. the Sanhedrin

  1255. plots,

  1256. they make

  1257. plans to

  1258. kill Jesus.

  1259. verse 53,

  1260. and those

  1261. plans go

  1262. into motion.

  1263. But what

  1264. we're learning

  1265. is that all

  1266. throughout this,

  1267. the real plan

  1268. has been for

  1269. Jesus to

  1270. display the

  1271. wonder,

  1272. the glory of

  1273. the Son of

  1274. God in the

  1275. raising of

  1276. Lazarus from

  1277. the dead.

  1278. Not only does

  1279. he claim to

  1280. have authority

  1281. over death,

  1282. he demonstrates

  1283. it.

  1284. his glory,

  1285. our good.

  1286. So the

  1287. point of

  1288. this whole

  1289. story is to

  1290. demonstrate that

  1291. Jesus has

  1292. authority over

  1293. death.

  1294. It's both

  1295. claimed and

  1296. demonstrated.

  1297. And the

  1298. intended time

  1299. after is to

  1300. believe in

  1301. him.

  1302. So remember

  1303. what Jesus

  1304. asked Martha?

  1305. Do you

  1306. believe this?

  1307. That's my

  1308. question for

  1309. you.

  1310. Do you

  1311. believe this?

  1312. That Jesus

  1313. is the

  1314. Christ, the

  1315. Son of God

  1316. who has

  1317. authority over

  1318. the dead?

  1319. And not just

  1320. death in

  1321. general, he

  1322. has authority

  1323. over your

  1324. death in

  1325. particular.

  1326. You know,

  1327. Jesus also

  1328. raised Jairus'

  1329. daughter, Mark

  1330. 5.

  1331. He also

  1332. raised the

  1333. son of a

  1334. widow in the

  1335. town of Nain,

  1336. Luke 7.

  1337. He has a

  1338. record of

  1339. raising people

  1340. from the

  1341. dead.

  1342. But those

  1343. people died

  1344. again.

  1345. Jesus

  1346. himself died,

  1347. was raised,

  1348. and is

  1349. alive today,

  1350. right now.

  1351. He's

  1352. defeated

  1353. death.

  1354. And do you

  1355. know what he

  1356. holds in his

  1357. hands?

  1358. Jingle,

  1359. jingle.

  1360. Revelation

  1361. 1.18.

  1362. The keys to

  1363. death and

  1364. Hades.

  1365. It's a

  1366. picture of

  1367. him having

  1368. all authority

  1369. over death.

  1370. This is good

  1371. news.

  1372. Here's how we

  1373. apply it.

  1374. In light of

  1375. Jesus'

  1376. authority over

  1377. death,

  1378. demonstrated in

  1379. the raising of

  1380. Lazarus,

  1381. demonstrated his

  1382. own resurrection,

  1383. knowing that he

  1384. loves you,

  1385. Christian,

  1386. knowing that he's

  1387. in it for his

  1388. glory,

  1389. you need

  1390. not be

  1391. enslaved to

  1392. the fear of

  1393. death.

  1394. You need not

  1395. to be enslaved

  1396. to that.

  1397. You don't need

  1398. to fear that.

  1399. Your ears,

  1400. you're going to

  1401. hear someday,

  1402. Michael,

  1403. come out,

  1404. and there's

  1405. no resisting

  1406. it.

  1407. He will

  1408. raise you.

  1409. He will

  1410. give you a

  1411. new body

  1412. that matches

  1413. up with the

  1414. eternal life

  1415. already possessed.

  1416. Who likes

  1417. doing math?

  1418. Greater than,

  1419. less than,

  1420. or equal to?

  1421. Is Jesus

  1422. greater than,

  1423. less than,

  1424. or equal to

  1425. death?

  1426. Let's get

  1427. personal.

  1428. Is Jesus

  1429. greater than,

  1430. less than,

  1431. or equal to

  1432. your death?

  1433. Amen.

  1434. With words,

  1435. he will call

  1436. you back

  1437. to life.

  1438. Here's a second

  1439. application.

  1440. What do you

  1441. do when Jesus

  1442. doesn't show

  1443. up?

  1444. What do you

  1445. do when you're

  1446. asking for

  1447. something over

  1448. and over again

  1449. and it

  1450. doesn't happen?

  1451. My guess,

  1452. if you're like

  1453. me,

  1454. you may start

  1455. to question

  1456. Jesus.

  1457. Like Mary and

  1458. Martha did,

  1459. what we're

  1460. assured of here,

  1461. the face of

  1462. death in

  1463. particular,

  1464. Jesus loves

  1465. us,

  1466. and he's in it

  1467. for his glory.

  1468. glory.

  1469. So if he's not

  1470. doing what I'm

  1471. asking,

  1472. that's not a

  1473. failure on his

  1474. part.

  1475. I am able to

  1476. say,

  1477. based off this

  1478. passage then,

  1479. oh, he's got

  1480. the power,

  1481. and he loves

  1482. me,

  1483. and he's in it

  1484. for his glory.

  1485. So he must have

  1486. a bigger and

  1487. better glory in

  1488. store.

  1489. And I'm going

  1490. to wait on

  1491. that.

  1492. I'm going to

  1493. wait on that.

  1494. I'm going to

  1495. continue to pray

  1496. in faith,

  1497. but I'm going

  1498. to wait on

  1499. that.

  1500. It's for his

  1501. glory and our

  1502. good.

  1503. If you entered

  1504. this building

  1505. today,

  1506. fearing your

  1507. death,

  1508. my prayer is

  1509. that you're

  1510. going to leave

  1511. this building

  1512. today with a

  1513. greater sense of

  1514. confidence that

  1515. your life and

  1516. your death are

  1517. in the hands

  1518. of Jesus.

  1519. In other

  1520. words,

  1521. even death

  1522. cannot snatch

  1523. you from his

  1524. hands.

  1525. At the end

  1526. of this chapter,

  1527. the Sanhedrin,

  1528. such an

  1529. motion to

  1530. kill Jesus.

  1531. Jesus once

  1532. again, and we

  1533. see this in

  1534. 54,

  1535. Jesus leaves.

  1536. He goes into

  1537. the wilderness.

  1538. It's not his

  1539. time.

  1540. And then in

  1541. verses 55

  1542. through 57,

  1543. we learn that

  1544. the Passover is

  1545. at hand.

  1546. It's going to

  1547. be Jesus'

  1548. last Passover.

  1549. And the

  1550. question all

  1551. these people who

  1552. are coming into

  1553. Jerusalem are

  1554. asking is this.

  1555. They know the

  1556. Sanhedrin wants

  1557. to arrest him,

  1558. and they're like,

  1559. is he going to

  1560. come?

  1561. And what is he

  1562. going to do if

  1563. he comes?

  1564. And we'll see

  1565. that answer next

  1566. week.

  1567. Will you pray

  1568. with me?

  1569. God in heaven,

  1570. we're so

  1571. grateful for

  1572. you, that

  1573. Jesus, you are

  1574. the resurrection

  1575. and the life.

  1576. You are our

  1577. resurrection.

  1578. You are our

  1579. life.

  1580. And you are

  1581. good.

  1582. God, would you

  1583. stir our hearts

  1584. to be freed

  1585. from the fear,

  1586. freed from being

  1587. slaves to the

  1588. fear of death?

  1589. death.

  1590. You've overcome

  1591. it.

  1592. And you've got a

  1593. track record of

  1594. doing it.

  1595. All glory to

  1596. your name.

  1597. Amen.

  1598. Amen.
