  1. If you would open up your Bibles to John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 1068 of your pew Bible.

  3. !

  4. We've got something controversial here.

  5. Let me just pray for us one more time.

  6. Father, would you pour out your Spirit upon us that Jesus would be magnified now.

  7. Cause all hearts in the room to rise to the King.

  8. In Jesus' name, amen.

  9. You know, there are certain names of people that if you bring up in a conversation,

  10. you're going to get an immediate response because they're controversial.

  11. Do you remember the whole Bad Bunny situation in the Super Bowl?

  12. Controversial.

  13. If you bring up Anthony Fauci's name in conversation, it's going to be controversial.

  14. If you bring up Donald Trump's name in a conversation, it'll be controversial.

  15. But the most controversial person that has ever walked on the planet is Jesus Christ by far.

  16. You bring his name up in a conversation.

  17. And you're going to get a variety of responses.

  18. And Jesus is controversial because of who he claimed to be and what he has claimed to do.

  19. He claimed to be God in the flesh.

  20. And he claims to be the only way by which a sinner can be saved.

  21. And the question is, is that true?

  22. Is he the King?

  23. Is he your King?

  24. Two weeks ago, when we were in John 10, there was controversy over these two titles that Jesus had claimed for himself.

  25. The Christ or the Messiah, this long-awaited king, and the other title, Son of God, which means he's fully God.

  26. And last week, after he raised Lazarus from the dead, in great controversy, the religious leaders started to plot his death.

  27. They wanted to assassinate him.

  28. And so here's John 12.

  29. And John 12 is a bit of a pivot in the entire gospel of John.

  30. Because John 12 is essentially Jesus' last call for people to believe in him.

  31. It's his last public engagement of the crowds.

  32. Next week, we'll start in on John 13, where Jesus will be interacting with his disciples.

  33. And from there on out, we're going to have smaller interactions in more private settings between Jesus and people.

  34. So this is a pivot.

  35. This is a last call.

  36. And there are a variety of reactions we're going to see in chapter 12.

  37. We're going to first see an extravagant response.

  38. It's going to be shocking.

  39. And we're also going to see a response of false pretense, of some people who are trying to make the savior of their own making.

  40. We're going to see unbelief of various kinds.

  41. We're going to see the unbelief that's the result of loving money.

  42. We're going to see the unbelief of fearing man.

  43. All sorts of different responses.

  44. Jesus is controversial.

  45. Is Jesus the king?

  46. Let me show you how we're going to walk through the passage.

  47. We're going to look at his anointing.

  48. We're going to look at his arrival into Jerusalem.

  49. We're going to look at him and say, it's go time.

  50. And then we have an explanation for why the Jews are not believing.

  51. And then there's the last call.

  52. The last two scenes of unbelief and the last call, I'm just going to touch on briefly.

  53. So, is Jesus the king?

  54. Is he your king?

  55. And how do you respond to him?

  56. So, let's look at verses 1 through 11.

  57. Because of the amount of scripture we're going to be getting through, I'm just going to be summarizing as we work through the passage.

  58. And in this passage, scene 1, this anointing, we see something unforgettable.

  59. It's in verses 1 through 11.

  60. Last week, we learned that after Jesus had raised Lazarus from the dead, the Pharisees wanted to kill him.

  61. And so, he left the area into the wilderness.

  62. It was not his time to die.

  63. But here, in chapter 12, it's now six days before the Passover.

  64. And the Passover is this huge feast the Jews would observe in Jerusalem,

  65. where they would remember God's deliverance of them from Egypt,

  66. and they would kill lambs.

  67. So, now Jesus, who had left the Jerusalem area because it was not his time to die,

  68. is now comes back to Bethany because he's invited to come to a feast,

  69. because he's the honored guest, because he's raised Lazarus from the dead.

  70. And so, he goes back to Bethany, which is just under two miles away from Jerusalem,

  71. and they gave a dinner for him.

  72. Martha is there, and she's doing what she's known for.

  73. She's serving.

  74. Lazarus is there, who was raised from the dead.

  75. He's reclining at the table next to Jesus.

  76. And then the focus falls on Mary.

  77. Mary, therefore, took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard

  78. and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair.

  79. The house was filled with fragrance of the perfume.

  80. If you were in the room at this moment,

  81. my guess is you'd be saying, this is extraordinary.

  82. This, this is, it almost feels over the top.

  83. The perfume, the nard, estimates have it in modern day money as around $45,000.

  84. This is one of her prized possessions.

  85. They would have been a wealthy family.

  86. But, but in order for her to pour the nard onto his feet,

  87. that means she had a certain posture.

  88. Where do you think she was?

  89. She was at his feet.

  90. So not only is she offering her most prized possession,

  91. her posture is one of at his feet.

  92. And then the pride of women in the first century was their hair.

  93. And what is she doing?

  94. She's using her hair like, like a towel you clean somebody's feet with.

  95. She's, she's, it's all submitted to Jesus.

  96. It's, it's, it's the posture.

  97. It's the prized possession.

  98. It's, it's how she is anointing and spreading this perfume upon his feet.

  99. It's, it's a picture of extravagance.

  100. It's a picture of, this is extraordinary.

  101. It's a picture in which, oh, she's all in.

  102. It's a picture of full surrender.

  103. She's all in.

  104. All that she is, all that she has at the feet of Jesus.

  105. She knows something.

  106. This is the man who raised her brother from the dead.

  107. This is the man who is the Christ, the son of God, the son of man.

  108. This is the one who had healed a man born blind.

  109. She knows who this is, even though he, she, he hasn't died.

  110. And he hasn't been raised from the dead.

  111. She has enough knowledge to know this is her king.

  112. And so she's responding in kind.

  113. What we see next is Judas in verses four through six.

  114. Judas is like, hey, wait a second.

  115. We're told here in verse four that he was the one who betrayed Jesus.

  116. He's one of the disciples.

  117. And in verse five, he says, why was this ointment not sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?

  118. Sounds godly.

  119. It sounds merciful, but it's just full of pretense because he's really a thief.

  120. If you see in verse six, he said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief.

  121. And having charge of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put in it.

  122. Here's the thinking.

  123. You know, we should sell this to the poor.

  124. Put that 45 grand into the money bag and I'll help the poor.

  125. You see what's going on there?

  126. You know what it's a picture of?

  127. It's the opposite of Mary.

  128. It's selfishness, self-serving.

  129. And so here we have at the outset of chapter 12,

  130. a contrast between Mary's selfless devotion, extravagant,

  131. and we have Judas's self-delusion.

  132. And he's a disciple.

  133. This goes on.

  134. Something else happens in Bethany in verses nine through 11.

  135. A large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was in Bethany.

  136. They came because not only they want to see Jesus,

  137. they want to see this guy who's been raised from the dead.

  138. And then the Pharisees respond.

  139. They're like, oh no.

  140. People are going away and believing in Jesus.

  141. And so you know what they do?

  142. Look at verse 10.

  143. They expand their murder plot to now include Lazarus.

  144. So the evidence gets lost.

  145. This is controversial.

  146. People are willing to kill over this guy.

  147. It's all revolving around Jesus.

  148. We see extraordinary devotion.

  149. We see this extraordinary delusion.

  150. A disciple who's pilfering from the money bag.

  151. And this extraordinary death making.

  152. There's no question that the appropriate response being presented here is the Mary response.

  153. And so maybe the question that you need to be asking yourself right now is,

  154. what is keeping you from responding to King Jesus like Mary?

  155. Full surrender.

  156. All in for Jesus.

  157. Posture.

  158. Prize possessions.

  159. The pride of your life.

  160. All for him.

  161. The second scene we come to is Jesus' arrival.

  162. And that takes place in verses 12 through 19.

  163. It's John's triumphal entry.

  164. John's version of Palm Sunday.

  165. And note, it's now the next day.

  166. So five days closer to Passover when these lambs would be killed.

  167. And now Jesus is entering Jerusalem.

  168. Do you remember how John 11 ended?

  169. There are these people from all over the countryside coming to Jerusalem.

  170. And they were like, is Jesus going to show up?

  171. Is he going to come?

  172. And here he is.

  173. Jesus is no coward.

  174. He is on mission to bring glory to God his Father through his death and resurrection.

  175. Well, he is met by a crowd.

  176. And you can see that crowd.

  177. 12, the next day, the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem.

  178. And if you look at 17 and 18, this large crowd had heard about Jesus from the people that actually saw Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead.

  179. Word has spread.

  180. The sign, verse 18, has gone out.

  181. And now this huge crowd comes to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem.

  182. And look what they're saying.

  183. Hosanna!

  184. Verse 13, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel.

  185. Our King has come.

  186. Our King is here.

  187. It's Psalm 118.25.

  188. The thing is, they're missing why he has come.

  189. There's a Hebrew word here.

  190. Hosanna.

  191. It means save us.

  192. It means deliver us.

  193. Save us.

  194. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  195. Our Savior is here.

  196. Even the King of Israel.

  197. Our Deliverer has come.

  198. The King has come.

  199. What do you think they are planning this King to deliver them from?

  200. Roman occupation.

  201. To make Israel great again.

  202. To cause Israel to stand on its own two feet.

  203. To bring back glory to Israel.

  204. But that's not why Jesus is riding into Jerusalem on a donkey.

  205. Jesus isn't coming into Jerusalem to deliver this people militarily or politically.

  206. He's not on a war horse.

  207. He is on a donkey.

  208. Look at verses 14 and 15.

  209. And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it.

  210. Just that it is written, fear not, daughter of Zion.

  211. Behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey's colt.

  212. That's Zechariah 9.9.

  213. Humble.

  214. Seated on a donkey.

  215. Coming into Jerusalem.

  216. Bringing salvation with him.

  217. Zechariah 9.9.

  218. You see, Jesus is coming into Jerusalem.

  219. Not to deliver people from the enemy of Rome.

  220. He is coming into Jerusalem to deliver a new people from a greater enemy.

  221. Sin and death and the devil.

  222. That's why he's coming into Jerusalem.

  223. He brings eternal life with him.

  224. And so the misunderstanding is the crux of it is in the word Hosanna.

  225. Save us.

  226. They had made Jesus into a Savior King of their own making.

  227. Make us great again.

  228. You're the guy.

  229. It's kind of like when someone claims to become a Christian

  230. because they think that Jesus is going to, quote unquote,

  231. make them the best version of themselves.

  232. And what they have in mind in that is that Jesus is the means

  233. to accomplish their appointed end.

  234. This is what I want to do.

  235. Jesus is going to get me there.

  236. Jesus, you're great.

  237. You're the King.

  238. But the reality is when Jesus comes,

  239. he takes over.

  240. He doesn't exist for us.

  241. We exist for him.

  242. He's the King.

  243. So in 14 and 15, Jesus finds the young donkey,

  244. goes in,

  245. and what we learn is that the disciples,

  246. in verse 16,

  247. they did not understand what was going on here at first.

  248. But it wasn't until after Jesus was glorified,

  249. after that he died,

  250. that they remembered

  251. and that these things had been written about him

  252. and had been done to him.

  253. It wasn't until after he was glorified

  254. that they had the aha moment.

  255. They were a little slow on the uptake.

  256. We have a bunch of people who totally miss.

  257. They want Jesus to be something that he wasn't.

  258. And then we have these disciples

  259. who are kind of slow on the uptick.

  260. And the Pharisees again,

  261. in verse 19,

  262. said to one another,

  263. you see that you are,

  264. they're talking to one another,

  265. you see that you are gaining nothing.

  266. Look, the world has gone after him.

  267. They're seeing Jesus entering into Jerusalem

  268. to great fanfare.

  269. And they're like,

  270. we've lost the crowd.

  271. Everybody,

  272. the whole world is going after him.

  273. It's like, oh no.

  274. There's a variety of responses

  275. to King Jesus coming into Jerusalem.

  276. You have misunderstanding,

  277. a distorted view of Jesus as King,

  278. that he has come to make me what I want to be.

  279. He's seen as a threat by the Pharisees.

  280. There's confusion among the disciples

  281. of what this really means.

  282. And so, let's ask this question.

  283. Like the misunderstanding crowd,

  284. are you seeking to make Jesus

  285. a King of your own making?

  286. Are you wanting Jesus to make America great again?

  287. Is that how you're seeing him?

  288. To that end?

  289. Or are you seeing Jesus

  290. as a King of his own kingdom?

  291. And when he calls people to himself

  292. from every tribe, tongue, and nation in the world,

  293. he doesn't call them to become Americans.

  294. He calls them to become citizens of his kingdom.

  295. That's what he died for.

  296. I like to think of myself as a monarchist first

  297. and as an American citizen second.

  298. These disciples

  299. who eventually realized

  300. that Jesus is coming in humble

  301. to establish a spiritual kingdom,

  302. to bring spiritual salvation.

  303. These men were eventually radically changed.

  304. Radically changed.

  305. They realized that Jesus came

  306. to establish a kingdom

  307. that will never end.

  308. It's indestructible.

  309. It's the Daniel 7 kingdom

  310. given to the Son of Man.

  311. Jesus' arrival.

  312. It's controversial.

  313. Who do you say he is?

  314. Is he the King

  315. who's come to take over?

  316. To take everything over?

  317. Scene 3.

  318. Go time.

  319. Go time.

  320. This starts in verse 19.

  321. So the Pharisees said to one another,

  322. you see that you are gaining nothing.

  323. Look, the world has gone after him.

  324. And then look at verse 20.

  325. Now among those who went up

  326. to worship at the feast,

  327. Passover,

  328. were some Greeks,

  329. some Gentiles,

  330. some non-Jews,

  331. people from very different nations

  332. than Israel.

  333. They are coming into Jerusalem

  334. and look what they do.

  335. They came to Philip

  336. and then Philip went and told Andrew,

  337. verse 22,

  338. and Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus

  339. and they told them

  340. that these Gentiles are like,

  341. sir, we wish to see Jesus.

  342. The whole world is going after him.

  343. Gentiles are now seeking out Jesus.

  344. And what Jesus says next

  345. is the king speaking.

  346. And Jesus answered them,

  347. the hour has come.

  348. It's go time.

  349. The hour has come for the son of man

  350. to be glorified.

  351. The son of man is that title

  352. from Daniel 7

  353. in which God the father,

  354. the ancient of days,

  355. gives a kingdom

  356. from every,

  357. of people from every tribe,

  358. tongue, and nation.

  359. He gives them

  360. to this son of man

  361. who will establish a kingdom

  362. that will last forever.

  363. And he's saying here,

  364. the hour has come

  365. for the son of man

  366. to be glorified,

  367. to be exalted,

  368. to be revealed.

  369. And now the question is,

  370. how will he be glorified?

  371. God,

  372. which makes verse 24

  373. very interesting.

  374. Here comes another

  375. truly, truly.

  376. We've seen this before.

  377. It's Jesus saying,

  378. hey, let me set the record straight.

  379. Let me set the record straight

  380. in what it means

  381. for the son of man

  382. to be glorified.

  383. And he says,

  384. unless a grain of wheat

  385. falls into the earth

  386. and dies,

  387. it remains alone.

  388. But if it dies,

  389. it bears much fruit.

  390. Well, that's really interesting.

  391. When I think of

  392. someone being glorified,

  393. I don't think of death.

  394. And what Jesus is saying,

  395. I am going to be glorified

  396. in my death.

  397. I am going to be

  398. like a grain of wheat

  399. that falls into the ground,

  400. dies,

  401. and then brings life,

  402. fruitfulness.

  403. See what he's doing here?

  404. The son of man

  405. is going to be glorified

  406. in a surprising manner.

  407. This king,

  408. who's coming in

  409. on a donkey,

  410. is saying that

  411. he's going to be glorified

  412. through his death.

  413. And then he says,

  414. verse 25,

  415. whoever loves his life

  416. loses it.

  417. Now remember,

  418. he's speaking to both

  419. Jews and Gentiles here.

  420. It is a crowd,

  421. verse 34,

  422. who's listening to him.

  423. It's a mixed crowd.

  424. He's like,

  425. anyone who would come after me,

  426. whether you're Jew

  427. or Gentile,

  428. whether you are

  429. red, yellow,

  430. black, or white,

  431. you are precious

  432. in his sight.

  433. Anyone.

  434. He says this,

  435. whoever loves his life

  436. loses it.

  437. Wouldn't he?

  438. I tend to think

  439. if you love your life,

  440. you're going to preserve

  441. your life.

  442. But that's not what

  443. Jesus is saying.

  444. Let's go on.

  445. What else does he say?

  446. Whoever loves his life

  447. will lose it,

  448. and whoever hates his life

  449. in this world

  450. will keep it

  451. for eternal life.

  452. What is going on?

  453. Whoever hates his life

  454. in this world,

  455. he's the one,

  456. she's the one

  457. who has eternal life.

  458. What?

  459. This is how the kingdom works.

  460. You see,

  461. the way you enter

  462. the kingdom of God,

  463. how you're saved,

  464. is informed

  465. by how the king

  466. established his kingdom.

  467. Jesus died

  468. in order

  469. to gather

  470. a people

  471. for himself,

  472. and now we,

  473. his people,

  474. come to him

  475. not saying,

  476. I'm going to live

  477. my life my way.

  478. We come to him saying,

  479. I am all yours.

  480. This is,

  481. this is a revisit

  482. to Mary.

  483. This is,

  484. this is,

  485. I'm laying my life down,

  486. posture,

  487. price,

  488. possessions,

  489. the pride of my being.

  490. It's all yours.

  491. I am coming to you.

  492. You,

  493. you're the controlling center

  494. of my life.

  495. You've always been

  496. the controlling center.

  497. Now I,

  498. I gladly come under you.

  499. I gladly lay my life

  500. in full surrender

  501. to you.

  502. That's what he's talking about.

  503. Here,

  504. here's,

  505. here's another way

  506. to say it.

  507. You cannot

  508. be fully devoted

  509. to yourself

  510. and fully devoted

  511. to Jesus

  512. simultaneously.

  513. You got to choose

  514. one or the other.

  515. And the,

  516. and in order to become

  517. fully devoted to Jesus,

  518. you need to hate yourself,

  519. which is another way

  520. you need to die

  521. to yourself.

  522. You need to die

  523. to saying,

  524. I'm in charge.

  525. You need to die

  526. to saying,

  527. I'm living for my own glory.

  528. You need to die

  529. to saying things like,

  530. I'm going to control

  531. everything.

  532. You got to die

  533. to these things

  534. and release them

  535. to Jesus.

  536. This is quite,

  537. quite a way to say

  538. it's go time.

  539. Jesus is just days away

  540. from dying on the cross.

  541. And he says,

  542. the hour

  543. has

  544. come.

  545. And then,

  546. he says,

  547. if anyone serves me,

  548. the father will not honor,

  549. will honor him.

  550. That's,

  551. do you want to honor God,

  552. the father?

  553. Devote yourself

  554. to Jesus Christ

  555. and all that you are.

  556. He delights in it.

  557. Jesus is glorified.

  558. God is glorified.

  559. There's a couple other words

  560. I want you to notice.

  561. In verse 24,

  562. excuse me,

  563. in verse 23,

  564. the hour has come

  565. for the son of man

  566. to be glorified.

  567. Verse 27,

  568. now

  569. is my soul troubled

  570. and what shall I say?

  571. For,

  572. father,

  573. save me from this hour,

  574. but for this purpose,

  575. I have come

  576. to this hour.

  577. This hour,

  578. this hour,

  579. now.

  580. It's,

  581. it's go time.

  582. And what Jesus is saying

  583. is,

  584. I am feeling

  585. the weight

  586. of what is about

  587. to happen.

  588. He's like,

  589. what am I going to do?

  590. Ask my father

  591. to deliver me from that?

  592. He's like,

  593. no.

  594. It's for this very purpose

  595. that I have come

  596. to this hour.

  597. And the purpose

  598. is to lay his life down.

  599. To give his life for us.

  600. That's why the king

  601. has come.

  602. It's go time.

  603. And then we read

  604. in verse 28,

  605. Father,

  606. glorify your name.

  607. Then a voice

  608. came from heaven.

  609. I have glorified it

  610. and I will glorify it again.

  611. This is one of three spots

  612. in the Gospels

  613. in which God the Father

  614. audibly speaks

  615. with Jesus the Son

  616. and present.

  617. His baptism,

  618. his transfiguration,

  619. and hear.

  620. And what do the crowds hear?

  621. Did you hear that thunder?

  622. Or other like,

  623. there's an angel

  624. speaking to him.

  625. And what Jesus says

  626. is extraordinary.

  627. He's saying,

  628. this voice has come.

  629. This is verse 30.

  630. This voice has come

  631. for your sake,

  632. not mine.

  633. It's for our sake

  634. that this voice

  635. of God the Father

  636. spoke.

  637. spoke.

  638. And here's why that is.

  639. It assures us

  640. that what is unfolding

  641. before our eyes

  642. is the plan

  643. of God Almighty.

  644. This is no accident.

  645. This is right

  646. according to plan.

  647. God is sovereignly

  648. carrying out

  649. his plan

  650. for the fullness

  651. of time

  652. in which he will

  653. be glorified

  654. with Jesus

  655. at the center

  656. of it all.

  657. It's for us.

  658. We hear this voice.

  659. And then comes

  660. another now.

  661. Jesus is going to die.

  662. The time has come.

  663. The hour is here.

  664. It's go time.

  665. Now is the judgment

  666. of this world.

  667. The death of Jesus

  668. is a judgment.

  669. God pours out

  670. his wrath

  671. in judgment

  672. upon all

  673. of the sin.

  674. The penalty for sin

  675. on all who would believe.

  676. It is judgment

  677. at that moment.

  678. Good Friday

  679. which is just days away

  680. from Jesus speaking this.

  681. God would pour out

  682. all of his wrath

  683. for all of our sin

  684. for one time

  685. done.

  686. Judgment.

  687. Now will the ruler

  688. of this world

  689. be cast out.

  690. When Jesus dies

  691. on the cross

  692. you can read this

  693. if you want

  694. in Revelation

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  695. chapter 12

  696. the devil gets

  697. cast out of heaven

  698. thrown down.

  699. Victory.

  700. Victory over the devil.

  701. He no longer

  702. is able to

  703. make any kind

  704. of accusation

  705. against the brethren.

  706. It's victory.

  707. This king

  708. on a donkey

  709. coming into Jerusalem

  710. it's go time.

  711. he's going to die

  712. and his death

  713. is going to

  714. bear God's judgment

  715. for all who would believe

  716. and it casts

  717. down

  718. casts out

  719. the devil.

  720. And then he says

  721. in verse 32

  722. and when I'm lifted up

  723. from the earth

  724. I will draw

  725. all people

  726. to myself.

  727. That lifting up

  728. is him referring

  729. to his being

  730. lifted up on the cross.

  731. and that

  732. is the thing.

  733. His death

  734. is the thing

  735. when those

  736. who hear

  737. and understand

  738. is what draws

  739. us to Christ

  740. because

  741. his death

  742. for our sin

  743. is the greatest

  744. news you can ever hear.

  745. John said

  746. he said this

  747. to show

  748. by what kind

  749. of death

  750. he was going

  751. to die

  752. but

  753. it's met

  754. with confusion

  755. in the crowd.

  756. The crowd

  757. is like

  758. we've heard

  759. from the law

  760. that the Christ

  761. remains forever.

  762. What do you mean

  763. you're going to get

  764. lifted up?

  765. How can you say

  766. that the Son of Man

  767. look at what they're doing

  768. they're saying

  769. the Son of Man

  770. and the Christ

  771. are the same person.

  772. How can you say

  773. that the Son of Man

  774. must be lifted up?

  775. What do you mean

  776. lifted up?

  777. When the Christ

  778. comes

  779. he's going to

  780. stay forever

  781. he's going to

  782. establish

  783. a kingdom

  784. that will never

  785. end.

  786. Who is the Son

  787. of Man?

  788. They're asking

  789. Jesus.

  790. And what Jesus

  791. says is

  792. I'll condense

  793. it for you

  794. I'm the light

  795. of the world.

  796. If you believe

  797. in me

  798. if you walk

  799. in the light

  800. you will not

  801. you will no longer

  802. be in darkness

  803. but if you do not

  804. walk in the light

  805. you're going to

  806. walk like one

  807. walks in the dark

  808. you're not going to

  809. know where you're

  810. going.

  811. And so he says

  812. while you have

  813. the light

  814. while you have

  815. me here

  816. because I'm just

  817. days away

  818. from my death

  819. believe in the light

  820. that you may

  821. become sons

  822. daughters

  823. of light

  824. to those who

  825. received him

  826. to them he gave

  827. the right to

  828. become children

  829. of God

  830. children of light

  831. pulled out of

  832. darkness

  833. brought into

  834. the light

  835. delivered

  836. from the domain

  837. of darkness

  838. transferred into

  839. the kingdom

  840. of his beloved

  841. son.

  842. What we have

  843. going on here

  844. is

  845. is

  846. is Jesus

  847. just

  848. saying

  849. I'm here

  850. I'm here

  851. for all people

  852. I am the king

  853. who's come

  854. into Jerusalem

  855. and if you

  856. believe in me

  857. regardless of

  858. your background

  859. I am happy

  860. to be your king

  861. I will pay

  862. for your sins

  863. I will give you

  864. eternal life

  865. it's go time

  866. Jesus has come

  867. into the

  868. to Jerusalem

  869. it's go time

  870. to die

  871. it's go time

  872. to glorify

  873. his father

  874. it's go time

  875. to judge

  876. it's go time

  877. to cast out

  878. the devil

  879. it's go time

  880. for those who

  881. would believe

  882. to become

  883. children

  884. of the light

  885. are you a child

  886. of light

  887. do you know

  888. that Jesus

  889. went into

  890. Jerusalem

  891. to die

  892. for you

  893. the son

  894. of man

  895. the king

  896. had to be

  897. lifted up

  898. that's scene

  899. three

  900. scene four

  901. is a surprising

  902. explanation

  903. for unbelief

  904. in verse 36

  905. we read

  906. while you

  907. have the

  908. light

  909. believe in

  910. the light

  911. that you

  912. may become

  913. sons of

  914. light

  915. and then it

  916. goes on

  917. when Jesus

  918. had said

  919. these things

  920. he departed

  921. and hid

  922. himself from

  923. them

  924. even though

  925. it's five

  926. days out

  927. he says

  928. these things

  929. and then

  930. he departs

  931. and hides

  932. himself

  933. his time

  934. to die

  935. his moment

  936. of death

  937. has not yet

  938. come

  939. but look at

  940. verse 37

  941. though he

  942. had done

  943. so many

  944. signs

  945. before them

  946. they still

  947. did not

  948. believe

  949. in him

  950. they still

  951. did not

  952. believe

  953. and so

  954. what John

  955. does here

  956. the writer

  957. of the

  958. gospel

  959. of John

  960. is he

  961. then explains

  962. their unbelief

  963. why they

  964. wouldn't

  965. believe

  966. and he

  967. does so

  968. by quoting

  969. two passages

  970. from Isaiah

  971. the first

  972. is Isaiah

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  973. chapter 53

  974. so that the

  975. word spoken

  976. by the prophet

  977. they did not

  978. believe so that

  979. the word spoken

  980. by the prophet

  981. Isaiah might

  982. be fulfilled

  983. their unbelief

  984. fulfilled

  985. what I'm about

  986. to read to you

  987. you ready

  988. the first

  989. verse may

  990. not be

  991. familiar

  992. but the

  993. second and

  994. third will

  995. who has

  996. believed

  997. what he has

  998. heard from

  999. us

  1000. and to whom

  1001. has the arm

  1002. of the Lord

  1003. been revealed

  1004. for he

  1005. grew up

  1006. before him

  1007. like a

  1008. young plant

  1009. and like a

  1010. root out

  1011. of dry

  1012. ground

  1013. he had

  1014. no form

  1015. or majesty

  1016. that we

  1017. should look

  1018. at him

  1019. and no

  1020. beauty

  1021. that we

  1022. should

  1023. desire

  1024. him

  1025. he was

  1026. despised

  1027. and rejected

  1028. by men

  1029. a man

  1030. of sorrows

  1031. and acquainted

  1032. with grief

  1033. and as one

  1034. from whom

  1035. men hide

  1036. their face

  1037. he was

  1038. despised

  1039. and we

  1040. esteemed

  1041. him not

  1042. that's

  1043. why they

  1044. weren't

  1045. believing

  1046. that

  1047. the

  1048. suffering

  1049. servant

  1050. the

  1051. Christ

  1052. had

  1053. come

  1054. and

  1055. they

  1056. they

  1057. rejected

  1058. him

  1059. he came

  1060. to his

  1061. own

  1062. and his

  1063. own

  1064. his very

  1065. own

  1066. did not

  1067. believe

  1068. him

  1069. and

  1070. they

  1071. are

  1072. personally

  1073. responsible

  1074. for

  1075. their

  1076. unbelief

  1077. they

  1078. still

  1079. did not

  1080. believe

  1081. they

  1082. didn't

  1083. believe

  1084. they're

  1085. responsible

  1086. for

  1087. their

  1088. unbelief

  1089. they

  1090. have

  1091. rejected

  1092. the

  1093. one

  1094. bringing

  1095. salvation

  1096. but then

  1097. we have

  1098. further

  1099. explanation

  1100. in

  1101. verse

  1102. 39

  1103. and now

  1104. we get

  1105. into the

  1106. deep

  1107. end

  1108. of the

  1109. pool

  1110. listen

  1111. to what

  1112. he

  1113. says

  1114. therefore

  1115. they

  1116. could

  1117. not

  1118. believe

  1119. not

  1120. only

  1121. did

  1122. they

  1123. not

  1124. believe

  1125. and

  1126. they're

  1127. responsible

  1128. for

  1129. that

  1130. they

  1131. could

  1132. not

  1133. believe

  1134. why

  1135. couldn't

  1136. they

  1137. believe

  1138. listen

  1139. to where

  1140. he goes

  1141. this is

  1142. out of

  1143. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1144. chapter

  1145. 6

  1146. he has

  1147. blinded

  1148. their

  1149. eyes

  1150. and

  1151. hardened

  1152. their

  1153. hearts

  1154. lest

  1155. they

  1156. see

  1157. with

  1158. their

  1159. eyes

  1160. and

  1161. understand

  1162. with

  1163. their

  1164. heart

  1165. in

  1166. turn

  1167. and I

  1168. would

  1169. heal

  1170. them

  1171. Isaiah

  1172. is

  1173. saying

  1174. the

  1175. reason

  1176. why

  1177. they

  1178. don't

  1179. believe

  1180. is

  1181. because

  1182. they're

  1183. responsible

  1184. for

  1185. that

  1186. but

  1187. underneath

  1188. that

  1189. all

  1190. God

  1191. has

  1192. hardened

  1193. their

  1194. hearts

  1195. it's

  1196. God

  1197. behind

  1198. this

  1199. that

  1200. can

  1201. make

  1202. you

  1203. uncomfortable

  1204. if

  1205. that

  1206. makes

  1207. you

  1208. uncomfortable

  1209. it's

  1210. actually

  1211. good

  1212. that

  1213. that

  1214. makes

  1215. you

  1216. uncomfortable

  1217. we're

  1218. seeing

  1219. God

  1220. sovereignty

  1221. operate

  1222. on a

  1223. level

  1224. that

  1225. we

  1226. tend

  1227. to

  1228. not

  1229. think

  1230. about

  1231. and

  1232. so

  1233. what

  1234. we

  1235. have

  1236. here

  1237. what

  1238. what

  1239. John

  1240. is

  1241. showing

  1242. us

  1243. is

  1244. both

  1245. human

  1246. responsibility

  1247. and

  1248. God's

  1249. sovereignty

  1250. when it

  1251. comes to

  1252. people

  1253. believing

  1254. in

  1255. Jesus

  1256. and

  1257. what

  1258. John

  1259. is

  1260. showing

  1261. us

  1262. it's

  1263. not

  1264. either

  1265. or

  1266. it's

  1267. both

  1268. and

  1269. it's

  1270. called

  1271. compatibilism

  1272. we

  1273. believe

  1274. that

  1275. it's

  1276. compatible

  1277. for

  1278. for

  1279. people

  1280. to be

  1281. fully

  1282. responsible

  1283. for

  1284. their

  1285. own

  1286. decisions

  1287. and

  1288. yet

  1289. God

  1290. is

  1291. completely

  1292. sovereign

  1293. over

  1294. all

  1295. things

  1296. it's

  1297. it's

  1298. mysterious

  1299. we

  1300. don't

  1301. get

  1302. it

  1303. let me

  1304. ask

  1305. you

  1306. this

  1307. question

  1308. or

  1309. let me

  1310. make

  1311. this

  1312. point

  1313. if

  1314. human

  1315. beings

  1316. this

  1317. is

  1318. John

  1319. Piper

  1320. point

  1321. if

  1322. human

  1323. beings

  1324. !

  1325. are

  1326. able

  1327. to

  1328. turn

  1329. a

  1330. life

  1331. threatening

  1332. virus

  1333. into

  1334. a

  1335. life

  1336. protecting

  1337. vaccine

  1338. think

  1339. of

  1340. polio

  1341. then

  1342. I

  1343. think

  1344. God

  1345. can

  1346. figure

  1347. out

  1348. this

  1349. whole

  1350. thing

  1351. between

  1352. human

  1353. responsibility

  1354. and

  1355. his

  1356. sovereignty

  1357. I

  1358. think

  1359. he's

  1360. got

  1361. it

  1362. covered

  1363. we

  1364. come

  1365. up

  1366. short

  1367. in

  1368. being

  1369. able

  1370. to

  1371. understand

  1372. it

  1373. but

  1374. God

  1375. doesn't

  1376. what's

  1377. even

  1378. more

  1379. amazing

  1380. is

  1381. what

  1382. John

  1383. says

  1384. next

  1385. Isaiah

  1386. said

  1387. these

  1388. things

  1389. because

  1390. he

  1391. saw

  1392. his

  1393. glory

  1394. and

  1395. spoke

  1396. of

  1397. him

  1398. contextually

  1399. he's

  1400. talking

  1401. about

  1402. the

  1403. vision

  1404. of

  1405. Isaiah

    Isaiah 6 chapter mention

  1406. chapter

  1407. 6

  1408. where

  1409. Isaiah

  1410. sees

  1411. these

  1412. angels

  1413. crying

  1414. out

  1415. holy

  1416. holy

  1417. holy

  1418. is

  1419. the

  1420. Lord

  1421. of

  1422. hosts

  1423. the

  1424. whole

  1425. earth

  1426. is

  1427. full

  1428. of

  1429. his

  1430. glory

  1431. and

  1432. the

  1433. foundations

  1434. of

  1435. the

  1436. threshold

  1437. shook

  1438. at

  1439. the

  1440. voice

  1441. of

  1442. him

  1443. who

  1444. called

  1445. and

  1446. the

  1447. house

  1448. was

  1449. filled

  1450. with

  1451. smoke

  1452. and

  1453. I

  1454. said

  1455. woe

  1456. is

  1457. me

  1458. for

  1459. I

  1460. am

  1461. lost

  1462. for

  1463. I

  1464. am

  1465. a

  1466. man

  1467. of

  1468. unclean

  1469. lips

  1470. and I

  1471. dwell

  1472. in

  1473. the

  1474. midst

  1475. of

  1476. a

  1477. people

  1478. of

  1479. unclean

  1480. lips

  1481. for

  1482. my

  1483. eyes

  1484. have

  1485. seen

  1486. the

  1487. king

  1488. the

  1489. Lord

  1490. of hosts

  1491. this

  1492. this

  1493. humble

  1494. man

  1495. riding in

  1496. on a

  1497. donkey

  1498. into

  1499. Jerusalem

  1500. is

  1501. is the

  1502. God

  1503. of

  1504. Isaiah

  1505. 6

  1506. and

  1507. then he

  1508. points to

  1509. a particular

  1510. type

  1511. of

  1512. unbelief

  1513. it's

  1514. it's

  1515. crazy

  1516. verse 42

  1517. nevertheless

  1518. many even

  1519. of the

  1520. authorities

  1521. believed

  1522. in him

  1523. think of

  1524. the word

  1525. believed

  1526. in quotes

  1527. but for

  1528. fear of

  1529. the

  1530. Pharisees

  1531. they did

  1532. not

  1533. confess

  1534. it

  1535. so that

  1536. they

  1537. would

  1538. not

  1539. be

  1540. put

  1541. out

  1542. of

  1543. the

  1544. synagogue

  1545. for

  1546. they

  1547. love

  1548. the

  1549. glory

  1550. that

  1551. comes

  1552. from

  1553. man

  1554. more

  1555. than

  1556. the

  1557. glory

  1558. that

  1559. comes

  1560. from

  1561. God

  1562. were

  1563. they

  1564. genuine

  1565. followers

  1566. of

  1567. Jesus

  1568. no

  1569. they

  1570. weren't

  1571. these

  1572. authorities

  1573. who

  1574. believed

  1575. in

  1576. Jesus

  1577. they

  1578. would

  1579. say

  1580. yeah

  1581. I

  1582. believe

  1583. in

  1584. Jesus

  1585. but

  1586. they

  1587. would

  1588. not

  1589. publicly

  1590. before

  1591. man

  1592. say

  1593. it

  1594. and

  1595. so

  1596. their

  1597. real

  1598. God

  1599. was

  1600. what

  1601. people

  1602. thought

  1603. of

  1604. them

  1605. that's

  1606. who

  1607. they

  1608. were

  1609. serving

  1610. and

  1611. what

  1612. John

  1613. says

  1614. here

  1615. is

  1616. that

  1617. keeps

  1618. you

  1619. out

  1620. of

  1621. the

  1622. kingdom

  1623. if

  1624. you're

  1625. not

  1626. willing

  1627. to

  1628. confess

  1629. Jesus

  1630. the king

  1631. of kings

  1632. before

  1633. man

  1634. you know

  1635. what I love

  1636. about this

  1637. afternoon's

  1638. baptism

  1639. whether it's here

  1640. or by

  1641. Eichelman

  1642. we have five

  1643. people who are

  1644. going public

  1645. with their

  1646. confession that

  1647. Jesus is their

  1648. king

  1649. they're not

  1650. fearing man

  1651. what we have

  1652. here

  1653. is an

  1654. explanation

  1655. of

  1656. people's

  1657. unbelief

  1658. in

  1659. verses

  1660. 44

  1661. through

  1662. 50

  1663. there's

  1664. a

  1665. last

  1666. call

  1667. in

  1668. publicly

  1669. Jesus

  1670. saying

  1671. believe

  1672. in me

  1673. he goes

  1674. to his

  1675. death

  1676. inviting

  1677. these

  1678. Jewish

  1679. people

  1680. and you

  1681. and me

  1682. to believe

  1683. in him

  1684. here's the

  1685. point of

  1686. this

  1687. passage

  1688. Jesus

  1689. is the

  1690. king

  1691. he's the

  1692. king who

  1693. has come

  1694. and the

  1695. question

  1696. is

  1697. is it

  1698. true

  1699. or not

  1700. is this

  1701. the real

  1702. king of

  1703. all

  1704. who

  1705. would lay

  1706. down his

  1707. life

  1708. so that

  1709. you could

  1710. live

  1711. eternally

  1712. there's a

  1713. variety

  1714. of responses

  1715. the one

  1716. that should

  1717. stand out

  1718. in your

  1719. mind

  1720. is Mary's

  1721. response

  1722. it was

  1723. extraordinary

  1724. her posture

  1725. giving of

  1726. her

  1727. prized

  1728. possessions

  1729. wiping

  1730. his feet

  1731. was the

  1732. pride

  1733. of her

  1734. being

  1735. her

  1736. hair

  1737. that's

  1738. how we

  1739. should

  1740. respond

  1741. and the

  1742. question is

  1743. why aren't

  1744. you responding

  1745. that way

  1746. what's keeping

  1747. you from

  1748. that

  1749. is it

  1750. love of

  1751. money

  1752. Judas

  1753. is it

  1754. losing

  1755. control

  1756. Pharisees

  1757. is it

  1758. saying

  1759. silent

  1760. like these

  1761. authorities

  1762. who wouldn't

  1763. confess

  1764. Jesus

  1765. or is

  1766. it

  1767. like the

  1768. crowds

  1769. making

  1770. this

  1771. king

  1772. into a

  1773. king

  1774. of your

  1775. own

  1776. making

  1777. is that

  1778. what's

  1779. keeping

  1780. you

  1781. from

  1782. going

  1783. all

  1784. in

  1785. for

  1786. Jesus

  1787. for

  1788. complete

  1789. surrender

  1790. remember

  1791. you

  1792. can't

  1793. simultaneously

  1794. be fully

  1795. devoted to

  1796. yourself

  1797. and fully

  1798. devoted to

  1799. Jesus

  1800. the king

  1801. you can't

  1802. have two

  1803. kings

  1804. and so

  1805. let me

  1806. urge you

  1807. this morning

  1808. bend your

  1809. knee to

  1810. king

  1811. Jesus

  1812. if

  1813. you're

  1814. not a

  1815. Christian

  1816. this is

  1817. the last

  1818. call

  1819. you don't

  1820. know what

  1821. tomorrow

  1822. holds

  1823. bend your

  1824. knee to

  1825. Jesus

  1826. today

  1827. you've

  1828. got

  1829. everything

  1830. you need

  1831. to know

  1832. and if

  1833. you are

  1834. a

  1835. Christian

  1836. bend

  1837. your

  1838. knee

  1839. to

  1840. Jesus

  1841. today

  1842. confess

  1843. him

  1844. again

  1845. as

  1846. your

  1847. king

  1848. of

  1849. kings

  1850. and

  1851. lord

  1852. of

  1853. lords

  1854. Jesus

  1855. is

  1856. the

  1857. most

  1858. controversial

  1859. person

  1860. in

  1861. human

  1862. history

  1863. and he

  1864. should

  1865. be

  1866. because

  1867. he's

  1868. God

  1869. in

  1870. the

  1871. flesh

  1872. and

  1873. he's

  1874. made

  1875. one

  1876. way

  1877. one

  1878. and

  1879. only

  1880. one

  1881. way

  1882. to

  1883. be

  1884. saved

  1885. through

  1886. his

  1887. death

  1888. he

  1889. calls

  1890. for

  1891. an

  1892. extraordinary

  1893. response

  1894. there's

  1895. this

  1896. verse

  1897. in

  1898. psalm

  1899. 96

  1900. for

  1901. great

  1902. is

  1903. the

  1904. lord

  1905. and

  1906. greatly

  1907. to

  1908. be

  1909. praised

  1910. we've

  1911. got

  1912. an

  1913. extraordinary

  1914. king

  1915. and

  1916. we

  1917. gladly

  1918. give

  1919. him

  1920. an

  1921. extraordinary

  1922. response

  1923. do

  1924. I have

  1925. an

  1926. amen

  1927. let

  1928. me

  1929. pray

  1930. God

  1931. in

  1932. heaven

  1933. we

  1934. thank

  1935. you

  1936. so

  1937. much

  1938. for

  1939. these

  1940. words

  1941. of

  1942. Jesus

  1943. and

  1944. John

  1945. 12

  1946. we

  1947. thank

  1948. you

  1949. for

  1950. what

  1951. you're

  1952. going

  1953. to

  1954. do

  1955. in

  1956. the

  1957. balance

  1958. of

  1959. this

  1960. day

  1961. we

  1962. commit

  1963. our

  1964. way

  1965. to

  1966. you

  1967. in

  1968. the

  1969. name

  1970. of

  1971. Jesus

  1972. amen
