  1. Amen. You may be seated.

  2. Well, if you turn in your Bibles to John chapter 13, 1 through 20, it's on page 1069 of your pew Bible.

    John 13 chapter mention

  3. That's where I'll be preaching from this morning.

  4. A while back, we caught them in the act.

  5. Right.

  6. We had gotten home early from a trip.

  7. And we had pulled up to our house.

  8. And I recognized their cars.

  9. And when I looked into the house, because it was evening, the lights were on.

  10. I could see their heads.

  11. And they were doing something that, well, that's not what we had agreed what they would do.

  12. We had given them a key to the house because they were going to take care of our bunny, Rosie.

  13. But they were doing something else.

  14. The two are brother and sister in Christ.

  15. They're members of the church.

  16. They will remain anonymous.

  17. We're in the same life group together.

  18. I knew exactly what they were up to because I know them.

  19. They were fixing a faucet in our first floor bathroom that hadn't worked since we had moved in.

  20. And that's been 12 years at that point.

  21. So they were not planning on being there when we had arrived.

  22. They were serving in a clandestine fashion.

  23. But they were caught in the act of conspicuous serving.

  24. And it was endearing.

  25. We felt loved.

  26. We felt cared for.

  27. We turned the water on and off in the faucet many a time.

  28. Like, this is so good.

  29. Have you ever been caught in a conspicuous act of service?

  30. We've all been caught in sinning.

  31. What have you ever been caught serving someone else?

  32. As followers of Jesus, we are to be known for our serving, not for our sinning.

  33. And this morning, we're going to come across a beatitude, a blessed.

  34. And I have called it, blessed are those who serve.

  35. We've reached a point in the Gospel of John that is called the farewell discourse.

  36. It starts in chapter 13.

  37. It goes through chapter 17.

  38. And we're talking literally just hours leading up to the death of Jesus.

  39. And so, if you look at 13.1, you can see now before the feast of the Passover.

  40. The Passover has arrived.

  41. The hour for which Jesus had come to die has now come.

  42. And it's just a matter of hours and minutes before Jesus breathes his last.

  43. And before Jesus dies, he's got some things he needs to say to his disciples.

  44. In fact, he's got an object lesson to teach them.

  45. And that's what we're going to be looking at this morning.

  46. Notice in verse 1.

  47. The hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father.

  48. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

  49. So, the way that we're going to approach this object lesson

  50. is understanding this is Jesus loving his disciples then and loving us, his disciples, now.

  51. He loved his own to the end.

  52. So, what follows in this passage is an example given.

  53. This is verses 2 through 11.

  54. And then the example is explained in 12 through 20.

  55. It's an object lesson in servanthood.

  56. When was the last time you were caught in a conspicuous act of service?

  57. Let me read John 13, 1 through 20.

  58. Now, before the feast of the Passover,

  59. when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father,

  60. having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

  61. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot,

  62. Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hand

  63. and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper.

  64. He laid aside his outer garments and, taking a towel, tied it around his waist.

  65. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet

  66. and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

  67. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him,

  68. Lord, do you wash my feet?

  69. Jesus answered him,

  70. What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.

  71. Peter said to him,

  72. You shall never wash my feet.

  73. Jesus answered him,

  74. If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.

  75. Simon Peter said to him,

  76. Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

  77. Jesus said to him,

  78. The one who's bathed does not need to wash except for his feet,

  79. but is completely clean.

  80. And you are clean, but not every one of you.

  81. For he knew who was to betray him.

  82. That was why he said,

  83. Not all of you are clean.

  84. When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place,

  85. he said to them,

  86. Do you understand what I have done to you?

  87. You call me teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am.

  88. If I then, your Lord and teacher, have washed your feet,

  89. you also ought to wash one another's feet.

  90. For I have given you an example that you also should do just as I have done to you.

  91. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  92. a servant is no greater than his master,

  93. nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

  94. If you know these things,

  95. blessed are you if you do them.

  96. I'm not speaking of all of you.

  97. I know whom I have chosen,

  98. but the scripture will be fulfilled.

  99. He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.

  100. I am telling you this now,

  101. before it takes place,

  102. that when it does take place,

  103. you may believe that I am he.

  104. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  105. whoever receives the one I send receives me,

  106. and whoever receives me

  107. receives the one who sent me.

  108. So let's look at this example given,

  109. and then the example explained.

  110. So verses 2 through 11,

  111. the example given.

  112. In verses 2 through 3,

  113. we have a framing of this account.

  114. John informs us

  115. that what is about to take place

  116. took place during the Passover supper.

  117. John is the only gospel writer

  118. who includes Jesus washing his disciples' feet.

  119. All the other three other gospels don't include this.

  120. And what he's doing is he's focusing

  121. on something else about Jesus.

  122. His example.

  123. In verse 2, we learn that Judas has already,

  124. that the devil has already put it in Judas' heart

  125. to betray Jesus.

  126. So Judas is present at the supper.

  127. Jesus is going to wash his feet,

  128. even though his heart is somewhere else.

  129. He is not clean,

  130. but he's there,

  131. and he's fulfilling the purpose

  132. for which God ordained him.

  133. Verse 3,

  134. we learn that everything is going according to plan.

  135. Let me just read this for you.

  136. We read this.

  137. Jesus, knowing that the Father

  138. had given all things into his hand,

  139. even Simon's betrayal.

  140. All things were going to plan.

  141. All things were going according to the plan

  142. God the Father had given his son to accomplish.

  143. And so that includes God's sovereignty

  144. over all things and this betrayer.

  145. It's what we talked about last week,

  146. this compatibilism,

  147. where we have both God's sovereign

  148. and people responsible

  149. for real decisions they're making.

  150. But it's in verse 4 through 5

  151. that the story slows down.

  152. And when you're reading something like this,

  153. and the story slows down,

  154. it's designed for your eyes to focus in.

  155. And so what we see next

  156. is designed to capture your imaginations.

  157. And so let's look at 13.4.

  158. Jesus rose from supper.

  159. Back in the first century,

  160. ancient Near East,

  161. they didn't have chairs at tables.

  162. They reclined at table.

  163. And so when he rose,

  164. he's getting up from eating.

  165. And when he stands up,

  166. all eyes follow Jesus.

  167. But you notice no words are said.

  168. And then he lays aside his outer garments.

  169. He would have been essentially naked.

  170. He would have had his kind of like underwear on.

  171. But he would have been a lot of skin.

  172. No words.

  173. All eyes on Jesus.

  174. And then he takes a towel.

  175. And he wraps himself in that towel.

  176. No words.

  177. But everybody at that supper

  178. is looking at him

  179. and they're wondering,

  180. what is he doing?

  181. In verse 5,

  182. these little action statements continue.

  183. He poured water into a basin.

  184. Can you imagine in your mind

  185. the sound of water being poured

  186. into a large basin?

  187. That's what happened.

  188. It goes on.

  189. After pouring the water in the basin,

  190. he began to wash the disciples' feet.

  191. He's working his fingers between their toes.

  192. And then he wipes them with a towel

  193. that was wrapped around him.

  194. He wipes them dry.

  195. No words.

  196. Just actions.

  197. Your mind is to be imagining

  198. our Lord Jesus doing this act.

  199. And what we fail to fully comprehend

  200. is the cultural significance

  201. of Jesus

  202. and this conspicuous act of servanthood.

  203. Foot washing

  204. in the first century household

  205. was the most menial job

  206. reserved for the lowliest of servants.

  207. And Jesus intentionally picked it.

  208. Even Jewish households,

  209. this job was given to non-Jews,

  210. Gentiles.

  211. Why?

  212. Well, we're used to wearing shoes

  213. that cover our toes.

  214. First century engineers' footwear

  215. were sandals, open-toed.

  216. And being a dry, dusty place,

  217. no underground sewer systems,

  218. it was agrarian animal refuse

  219. strewn about.

  220. First century,

  221. ancient Near East feet

  222. were gross.

  223. Disgusting.

  224. You got all kinds of stuff

  225. working in between your toes.

  226. And the reason why Gentiles

  227. were given that job

  228. in Jewish houses, presumably,

  229. is that you could defile yourself

  230. with what you touch.

  231. So if you were a foot washer

  232. of a first century household,

  233. you were low man on the totem pole.

  234. It would have been humiliating.

  235. Has anybody walked into

  236. a public restroom today

  237. while someone's cleaning it?

  238. And you try to make eye contact

  239. with the person cleaning it?

  240. And they look for you for a second

  241. and then put their eyes down?

  242. That's the vibe here.

  243. There's nothing wrong

  244. with cleaning toilets.

  245. But it is humbling.

  246. So Jesus has very intentionally

  247. chosen this act

  248. as an object lesson

  249. at the supper.

  250. He's doing what

  251. only the lowliest of servants

  252. would do.

  253. It would have been humiliating

  254. in the eyes of many.

  255. And just think about

  256. the kind of posture of heart

  257. that fuels this kind of practice.

  258. Check it out.

  259. Here is the one

  260. who just raised Lazarus

  261. from the dead.

  262. Lazarus, come forth.

  263. This is the Christ.

  264. This is the son of man.

  265. The Daniel 7 king.

  266. This is the son of God.

  267. Totally God.

  268. Totally man.

  269. The word incarnate.

  270. The king who has come.

  271. And he's getting his fingers

  272. in between his disciples' toes

  273. to get the filth and squalor out.

  274. When you start to understand

  275. the significance

  276. of what Jesus is doing,

  277. this conspicuous act of service,

  278. it verges on scandalous.

  279. And that's why we see

  280. Peter's strong reaction.

  281. Peter,

  282. when he came to be his turn,

  283. he said,

  284. Lord,

  285. do you wash my feet?

  286. You're going to actually

  287. wash my feet?

  288. You see,

  289. you see,

  290. Simon Peter has some sense

  291. of who this is.

  292. He would have been there

  293. when he raised Lazarus

  294. from the dead.

  295. You're going to,

  296. you're going to wash my feet?

  297. And Jesus says,

  298. you don't get it now,

  299. but you're going to get it

  300. in due time.

  301. It betrays the supernatural knowledge.

  302. Peter doubled down

  303. in verse 8,

  304. and in the original language,

  305. there is a pileup

  306. of strong no's.

  307. it would go something like this.

  308. No,

  309. never.

  310. Absolutely not forever

  311. will you do that.

  312. It's,

  313. it's,

  314. it's a strong,

  315. like,

  316. no way

  317. are you going to touch

  318. the gook

  319. between my toes.

  320. He has a sense

  321. of his own unworthiness

  322. and the worthiness

  323. of Jesus.

  324. And then in the verse

  325. part of 9,

  326. Jesus says,

  327. if you don't let me do this,

  328. Peter,

  329. you have no share with me.

  330. So,

  331. so what's going on here

  332. is this.

  333. What Jesus is showing

  334. Peter and his disciples

  335. is how his kingdom

  336. rolls.

  337. This is kingdom ethic.

  338. This is a kingdom way.

  339. This is a kingdom way

  340. of being and interacting

  341. with different people.

  342. And so,

  343. essentially,

  344. Jesus is saying is,

  345. hey,

  346. if you're not going to let me,

  347. the king,

  348. serve you this way,

  349. you're not going to be able

  350. to serve other people

  351. this way.

  352. You'll have no share

  353. of my kingdom.

  354. Peter,

  355. being Peter,

  356. swings the other way.

  357. Because he's missing

  358. the point.

  359. He doesn't understand

  360. what Jesus is doing

  361. to him.

  362. But he will.

  363. And so,

  364. Peter,

  365. in Peter dramatic

  366. style,

  367. says,

  368. not just my feet,

  369. but yea,

  370. also my hands

  371. and head.

  372. Kind of like all of me.

  373. If you're going to go

  374. wash something,

  375. wash it all.

  376. I can just imagine

  377. Jesus kind of like,

  378. oh,

  379. Peter.

  380. Peter,

  381. Peter,

  382. Peter.

  383. And in verse 10,

  384. we read this.

  385. the one who has bathed

  386. does not need to wash

  387. except for his feet,

  388. but is completely clean.

  389. And you are clean.

  390. What Jesus is saying here

  391. is,

  392. Peter,

  393. you've already been

  394. forgiven of your sin

  395. based on what I'm going to do

  396. in just hours.

  397. You're already clean.

  398. So,

  399. Jesus is saying to Peter,

  400. Peter,

  401. you've already been forgiven

  402. based upon

  403. what I will do

  404. at the cross

  405. in just moments from now.

  406. For us,

  407. living on the other side

  408. of the cross,

  409. we are forgiven

  410. based on what Jesus

  411. has done

  412. millennia ago.

  413. What Peter is missing

  414. is what Jesus is doing.

  415. It's like Jesus is saying,

  416. would you just let me finish

  417. with the object lesson?

  418. I'm just trying to

  419. wash your feet.

  420. I'm trying to make a point.

  421. And at the end of verse 10,

  422. Jesus says something

  423. a little ominous.

  424. And you are clean,

  425. but not every one of you.

  426. He's referring to Judas.

  427. He knows who will betray him.

  428. Again,

  429. divine knowledge.

  430. And what's interesting here

  431. is that Jesus must have

  432. washed Judas' feet too.

  433. Judas is not completely

  434. clean like Peter.

  435. He's got,

  436. his heart is far from Jesus.

  437. But Jesus has washed his feet.

  438. But there's something

  439. going on here

  440. that you need to see.

  441. This section begins

  442. in verse 2

  443. with a reference

  444. to the betrayer,

  445. Judas.

  446. And verse 11

  447. ends with a reference

  448. to Judas.

  449. And so what bookends

  450. the actual example

  451. Jesus gives

  452. is an example

  453. of betrayal.

  454. This example

  455. is bookended

  456. by betrayal.

  457. Why?

  458. Well,

  459. it happened.

  460. But it's the very

  461. opposite

  462. example

  463. of what Jesus

  464. is modeling.

  465. Judas

  466. models for us here

  467. selfishness.

  468. serving himself.

  469. Jesus

  470. is modeling

  471. selflessness.

  472. Serving

  473. others.

  474. Considering

  475. others

  476. better than himself.

  477. A humble

  478. posture of heart

  479. that is serving

  480. people very

  481. practically.

  482. In this moment,

  483. we get a line

  484. of sight

  485. on our

  486. creator,

  487. on our

  488. sustainer,

  489. our savior

  490. and our

  491. judge

  492. and he

  493. is kneeled

  494. down at his

  495. disciples' feet

  496. and he is

  497. getting the

  498. gook out

  499. between their

  500. toes.

  501. It's extraordinary.

  502. He has

  503. purposefully

  504. selected

  505. and

  506. taken part

  507. in this,

  508. the most

  509. menial job

  510. of a

  511. household

  512. at this

  513. time.

  514. And you

  515. know,

  516. he has

  517. served you

  518. as well.

  519. You know,

  520. he hasn't

  521. put his

  522. fingers

  523. between my

  524. toes.

  525. No,

  526. he hasn't.

  527. But in

  528. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  529. chapter 2,

  530. we learn

  531. that in

  532. an act

  533. of humility,

  534. Jesus,

  535. the second

  536. person of

  537. the Trinity

  538. took on

  539. human flesh.

  540. He took

  541. the form

  542. of a

  543. servant.

  544. just by

  545. becoming a

  546. man,

  547. a human

  548. being,

  549. it was an

  550. act of

  551. service.

  552. That's

  553. conspicuous

  554. and he

  555. did that

  556. for you.

  557. But even

  558. more so,

  559. in Mark

  560. 10,

  561. 45,

  562. Jesus

  563. says,

  564. I came

  565. not to

  566. be served,

  567. but to

  568. serve and

  569. to give

  570. my life

  571. as a

  572. ransom for

  573. many.

  574. You have

  575. been served

  576. by this

  577. man in

  578. the most

  579. conspicuous

  580. act of

  581. servanthood

  582. of all,

  583. and that

  584. his work

  585. on the

  586. cross.

  587. It's not

  588. his fingers

  589. getting the

  590. grit out

  591. between your

  592. toes.

  593. It's the

  594. blood of

  595. the cross

  596. making you

  597. white as

  598. snow.

  599. This is

  600. the one

  601. who is

  602. giving us

  603. an example.

  604. I hope you

  605. feel the

  606. love.

  607. Remember,

  608. he loved

  609. his own

  610. to the

  611. end.

  612. So,

  613. example

  614. given.

  615. Now,

  616. let's look

  617. at the

  618. example

  619. explained.

  620. This is

  621. verses

  622. 12-20.

  623. So,

  624. following

  625. this

  626. conspicuous,

  627. even

  628. scandalous

  629. act of

  630. service,

  631. verse 12,

  632. Jesus puts

  633. back on

  634. his outer

  635. garments,

  636. resumes

  637. his place

  638. at the

  639. table,

  640. and then

  641. he asks

  642. his disciples

  643. a question.

  644. He asks

  645. them,

  646. do you

  647. understand

  648. what I

  649. just did?

  650. In other

  651. words,

  652. do you

  653. get it?

  654. Do you

  655. get the

  656. object

  657. lesson?

  658. Do you

  659. understand

  660. what I

  661. just did

  662. to you?

  663. Because

  664. this

  665. object

  666. lesson

  667. is a

  668. gospel

  669. kingdom

  670. lesson.

  671. You know,

  672. when I

  673. was a

  674. young

  675. football

  676. player,

  677. which was

  678. a long

  679. time ago,

  680. my coaches

  681. would show

  682. me how

  683. to tackle

  684. and how

  685. to block.

  686. And they

  687. would show

  688. me how

  689. to tackle

  690. and how

  691. to block,

  692. not so

  693. that I

  694. could just

  695. get head

  696. knowledge and

  697. like,

  698. oh,

  699. exceptional

  700. form,

  701. coach.

  702. No,

  703. they

  704. wanted

  705. me to

  706. do it

  707. myself.

  708. And they

  709. would ask,

  710. do you

  711. get it?

  712. After they

  713. would show

  714. me.

  715. And then

  716. they'd be

  717. like,

  718. do it.

  719. Practice

  720. it.

  721. What Jesus

  722. is asking

  723. here is,

  724. do you

  725. understand

  726. what I've

  727. just done

  728. to you?

  729. He's not

  730. asking if

  731. they get

  732. it conceptually.

  733. He's asking

  734. if they get

  735. it conceptually

  736. so they

  737. can do

  738. it

  739. themselves.

  740. Do you

  741. understand

  742. what I've

  743. done to

  744. you?

  745. He's not

  746. asking about

  747. foot washing

  748. technique.

  749. What he's

  750. asking is

  751. more about

  752. heart

  753. posture.

  754. A heart

  755. posture of

  756. a citizen

  757. of his

  758. kingdom.

  759. He's like,

  760. do you

  761. have the

  762. same kind

  763. of heart

  764. towards one

  765. another as

  766. I have to

  767. you?

  768. Are you

  769. a servant?

  770. We're going

  771. to see

  772. in just

  773. a second.

  774. He's

  775. going to

  776. tell us

  777. blessed

  778. are those

  779. who

  780. serve.

  781. What we

  782. have here

  783. in verses

  784. 13 through

  785. 17 in

  786. particular

  787. is he

  788. gives an

  789. explanation

  790. for his

  791. example.

  792. And he

  793. uses what's

  794. called an

  795. if-then

  796. argument.

  797. He says,

  798. if this

  799. is true,

  800. then this

  801. is true.

  802. And in

  803. verse 13

  804. he starts

  805. setting it

  806. up.

  807. Look how

  808. he sets

  809. it up.

  810. Jesus

  811. says,

  812. you call

  813. me teacher

  814. and Lord

  815. and you

  816. are right

  817. for so

  818. I am.

  819. Do you

  820. know what

  821. he's saying?

  822. He's saying

  823. I'm greater

  824. than you.

  825. He's saying

  826. you call

  827. me teacher,

  828. it's a

  829. position of

  830. authority,

  831. you call

  832. me Lord,

  833. master,

  834. and it's

  835. true,

  836. it's good

  837. and right

  838. you're saying

  839. that because

  840. I am.

  841. And what

  842. we know

  843. is Jesus

  844. has more

  845. authority

  846. than just

  847. by way

  848. of role.

  849. He has

  850. authority over

  851. all people

  852. because he

  853. is God

  854. incarnate,

  855. the Christ,

  856. son of

  857. man,

  858. the son

  859. of God.

  860. So then

  861. he goes

  862. from 13,

  863. he's established

  864. that he

  865. has greater

  866. authority,

  867. greater nature

  868. than them,

  869. and then

  870. 14 is the

  871. actual argument.

  872. He says,

  873. if I

  874. then,

  875. your Lord

  876. and teacher,

  877. have washed

  878. your feet,

  879. then you

  880. also ought

  881. to wash

  882. one another's

  883. feet.

  884. That's the

  885. if-then

  886. argument.

  887. If it's

  888. true of

  889. me that

  890. I'm washing

  891. your feet

  892. and I'm

  893. greater than

  894. you,

  895. then you,

  896. my disciples

  897. who are

  898. less than

  899. me,

  900. then you

  901. must wash

  902. other people's

  903. feet as well.

  904. See the

  905. argument?

  906. In verse

  907. 15,

  908. Jesus says,

  909. for I have

  910. given you an

  911. example that

  912. you also

  913. should do

  914. just as I

  915. have done

  916. to you.

  917. There's the

  918. explanation.

  919. This

  920. example,

  921. this object

  922. lesson,

  923. is an

  924. object

  925. lesson in

  926. how his

  927. kingdom,

  928. how it

  929. rolls.

  930. Kingdom

  931. ethics,

  932. how we

  933. relate to

  934. one another.

  935. Verse

  936. 16,

  937. he drops

  938. a truly,

  939. truly,

  940. he's like

  941. saying,

  942. let me

  943. give it to

  944. you straight.

  945. This is

  946. how it

  947. really is.

  948. I say

  949. to you,

  950. a servant

  951. is no

  952. greater than

  953. his master,

  954. they're the

  955. servants,

  956. he's the

  957. master,

  958. nor is a

  959. messenger

  960. greater than

  961. the one

  962. who sent

  963. them.

  964. In this

  965. case,

  966. they're the

  967. messengers,

  968. he's the

  969. one who

  970. sent them,

  971. and he's

  972. saying,

  973. because of

  974. this,

  975. because I'm

  976. greater than

  977. you,

  978. you're going

  979. to follow

  980. me,

  981. because I'm

  982. your king,

  983. into serving

  984. one another,

  985. being a

  986. servant.

  987. And then in

  988. verse 17,

  989. what we see

  990. is the

  991. beatitude.

  992. He says,

  993. if you

  994. know these

  995. things,

  996. blessed are

  997. you if you

  998. do them.

  999. Do you

  1000. know where

  1001. the blessing

  1002. is found?

  1003. Not in

  1004. the knowing,

  1005. in the

  1006. doing.

  1007. The blessing

  1008. that he's

  1009. speaking of

  1010. is not

  1011. in the

  1012. knowledge,

  1013. in the

  1014. theory of

  1015. being a

  1016. servant,

  1017. servant,

  1018. the blessing

  1019. is in the

  1020. practice of

  1021. being a

  1022. servant.

  1023. It's

  1024. posture of

  1025. heart lived

  1026. out in

  1027. practice.

  1028. When you

  1029. think of

  1030. beatitudes,

  1031. maybe you

  1032. think of the

  1033. beatitudes in

  1034. the Sermon on

  1035. the Mount,

  1036. that's in

  1037. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1038. 5.

  1039. Do you

  1040. remember what

  1041. the first

  1042. beatitude

  1043. is?

  1044. Blessed are

  1045. the poor

  1046. in spirit,

  1047. for theirs

  1048. is the

  1049. kingdom of

  1050. heaven.

  1051. Poor in

  1052. spirit is

  1053. just talking

  1054. about another

  1055. way of

  1056. humility,

  1057. talking about

  1058. servanthood.

  1059. It's a

  1060. posture of

  1061. heart that

  1062. is true

  1063. of those

  1064. who belong

  1065. to Christ's

  1066. kingdom.

  1067. It's the

  1068. beginning of

  1069. servanthood.

  1070. At the

  1071. very heart

  1072. of servanthood

  1073. is humility,

  1074. being poor

  1075. in spirit.

  1076. That word

  1077. blessed

  1078. carries the

  1079. sense of

  1080. joy and

  1081. happiness.

  1082. What Jesus

  1083. is getting

  1084. at is this,

  1085. it's the

  1086. good life.

  1087. The good

  1088. life in

  1089. God's

  1090. kingdom is

  1091. not being

  1092. served by

  1093. others,

  1094. it's serving

  1095. others.

  1096. There's joy

  1097. in that.

  1098. I define

  1099. humility as

  1100. simply this,

  1101. living in

  1102. reality.

  1103. Humility is

  1104. living in the

  1105. reality of who

  1106. Jesus is and

  1107. who you are

  1108. and who other

  1109. people are.

  1110. And when

  1111. you're living

  1112. in the truth

  1113. and reality

  1114. of all that,

  1115. you're living

  1116. humbly.

  1117. You've got the

  1118. right posture

  1119. towards God,

  1120. yourself,

  1121. and others.

  1122. That's

  1123. humility.

  1124. It's the

  1125. Copernican

  1126. revolution of

  1127. the soul.

  1128. Remember

  1129. Copernicus?

  1130. He's the guy

  1131. that discovered

  1132. that the sun

  1133. doesn't orbit

  1134. the earth,

  1135. but the earth

  1136. orbits the sun.

  1137. And similarly,

  1138. when we have

  1139. our eyes open

  1140. to Jesus,

  1141. Jesus brings

  1142. us into the

  1143. reality that

  1144. Jesus doesn't

  1145. exist for me.

  1146. I'm not the

  1147. sun of my

  1148. solar system,

  1149. and Jesus

  1150. orbits me.

  1151. No, I orbit

  1152. him.

  1153. He's at the

  1154. center of all

  1155. things.

  1156. I don't live

  1157. for myself.

  1158. I live for

  1159. Christ,

  1160. and he says

  1161. serve others.

  1162. And so when

  1163. you come into

  1164. Jesus' orbit,

  1165. you're going to

  1166. become like him.

  1167. in serving

  1168. other people,

  1169. and doing

  1170. that in

  1171. maybe menial

  1172. ways.

  1173. What we have

  1174. here is an

  1175. explanation that

  1176. has now moved

  1177. into exhortation.

  1178. You're being

  1179. urged by

  1180. Jesus.

  1181. It's like,

  1182. this is who

  1183. you are.

  1184. Now live it

  1185. out.

  1186. I'm not telling

  1187. you these things

  1188. or showing you

  1189. these things so

  1190. you can be

  1191. like, oh,

  1192. that's interesting.

  1193. No, he's

  1194. telling us these

  1195. things for us

  1196. to do them,

  1197. to live them

  1198. out as he

  1199. himself has.

  1200. He's like,

  1201. go be blessed.

  1202. Serve others

  1203. as I have

  1204. served you.

  1205. It's,

  1206. another way to

  1207. talk about it

  1208. is Philippians,

  1209. the way Paul

  1210. talks about it

  1211. in Philippians

  1212. too.

  1213. He says,

  1214. so if there's

  1215. any encouragement

  1216. in Christ,

  1217. any comfort

  1218. from love,

  1219. any participation

  1220. in the spirit,

  1221. any affection

  1222. and sympathy,

  1223. complete my joy

  1224. by being of the

  1225. same mind,

  1226. having the same

  1227. love,

  1228. being in full

  1229. accord and of

  1230. one mind,

  1231. what does that

  1232. look like?

  1233. He says,

  1234. do nothing from

  1235. selfish ambition

  1236. or conceit,

  1237. but in humility

  1238. count others

  1239. more significant

  1240. than yourselves.

  1241. Let each of you

  1242. look not only to

  1243. his own interests,

  1244. but also to the

  1245. interests of others,

  1246. having this mind

  1247. among yourselves,

  1248. which is yours

  1249. and Jesus,

  1250. and then he

  1251. talks about how

  1252. Jesus humbled

  1253. himself by

  1254. taking on flesh

  1255. the form of a

  1256. servant.

  1257. It's normal

  1258. Christian living.

  1259. Humility is

  1260. the essential

  1261. posture of heart

  1262. for every Christian

  1263. who follows

  1264. Jesus.

  1265. This beatitude

  1266. in verse 17

  1267. Jesus is speaking

  1268. of a joy

  1269. that he knows

  1270. personally.

  1271. For the joy set

  1272. before him,

  1273. he endured the

  1274. cross,

  1275. scorning its

  1276. shame.

  1277. He knows this

  1278. joy,

  1279. and he wants

  1280. us to personally

  1281. experience the

  1282. good life of the

  1283. kingdom,

  1284. the joy of

  1285. serving others,

  1286. but he does touch

  1287. on an exception

  1288. at the end

  1289. here.

  1290. He says in

  1291. verse 18,

  1292. I'm not speaking

  1293. of all of you.

  1294. I know who I've

  1295. chosen,

  1296. but the scripture

  1297. will be fulfilled.

  1298. And then he quotes

  1299. Psalm 41.9

  1300. in reference

  1301. to Judas.

  1302. He who ate

  1303. my bread

  1304. at the supper

  1305. has lifted

  1306. his heel against

  1307. me.

  1308. He's going to

  1309. betray me.

  1310. And then he

  1311. says,

  1312. I'm telling you

  1313. this now,

  1314. before it takes

  1315. place regarding

  1316. Judas' betrayal,

  1317. that when it

  1318. does take

  1319. place,

  1320. you may

  1321. believe that

  1322. I am he.

  1323. And that

  1324. little I am

  1325. he is the

  1326. Greek phrase

  1327. ego emi,

  1328. I am.

  1329. In other

  1330. words,

  1331. even in my

  1332. betrayal,

  1333. it will be

  1334. made known

  1335. to you that

  1336. I'm God in

  1337. the flesh.

  1338. the point

  1339. of all this

  1340. is that

  1341. because Jesus

  1342. has served

  1343. us,

  1344. we serve

  1345. one another.

  1346. Blessed

  1347. are those

  1348. who serve

  1349. because he

  1350. served us

  1351. with a

  1352. humble posture

  1353. in very

  1354. practical

  1355. service.

  1356. We serve

  1357. one another

  1358. both in

  1359. posture and

  1360. practice.

  1361. because of

  1362. Jesus,

  1363. we no longer

  1364. serve

  1365. ourselves

  1366. and we

  1367. no longer

  1368. see other

  1369. people as

  1370. serving us.

  1371. Because of

  1372. Jesus,

  1373. now we

  1374. serve

  1375. others.

  1376. So let's

  1377. apply this

  1378. for the time

  1379. that's remaining

  1380. in two general

  1381. categories,

  1382. posture of

  1383. heart,

  1384. day-to-day

  1385. practice.

  1386. So let's

  1387. talk about

  1388. posture of

  1389. heart.

  1390. the way

  1391. to leave

  1392. this building

  1393. is sensing

  1394. a call

  1395. to humility

  1396. that leave

  1397. this building

  1398. this morning

  1399. saying,

  1400. it is good

  1401. for me to

  1402. humble myself

  1403. because Jesus

  1404. humbled himself.

  1405. Remember,

  1406. humility is just

  1407. living in reality

  1408. of who Jesus

  1409. is and who

  1410. you are.

  1411. So let me do

  1412. some math

  1413. and you answer

  1414. the question,

  1415. is Jesus

  1416. greater than,

  1417. less than,

  1418. or equal to

  1419. you,

  1420. greater than.

  1421. He's greater

  1422. than me,

  1423. he's greater

  1424. than all.

  1425. And if he

  1426. humbled himself,

  1427. if he became

  1428. a man,

  1429. washed grimy

  1430. feet,

  1431. gave himself

  1432. his life

  1433. as a ransom

  1434. for many,

  1435. we must

  1436. humble

  1437. ourselves

  1438. too.

  1439. So humility

  1440. is to

  1441. characterize

  1442. all of us.

  1443. It's Philippians

  1444. 2.

  1445. It's the

  1446. principal

  1447. posture of

  1448. heart.

  1449. So when you

  1450. leave here,

  1451. you might want

  1452. to leave here

  1453. saying,

  1454. oh God,

  1455. would you

  1456. help me

  1457. to humble

  1458. myself?

  1459. The second

  1460. heart posture

  1461. is joy.

  1462. It's joy

  1463. to serve

  1464. others.

  1465. So if you

  1466. are grumbling,

  1467. complaining,

  1468. whining

  1469. about helping

  1470. others,

  1471. that should

  1472. be an indicator

  1473. that your

  1474. heart is not

  1475. postured right.

  1476. Maybe it's

  1477. the result

  1478. from being

  1479. overextended,

  1480. there are

  1481. realities there,

  1482. but sometimes

  1483. it's because

  1484. you're insisting

  1485. on your own

  1486. way.

  1487. You're

  1488. actually

  1489. wanting to

  1490. serve in

  1491. practice

  1492. without having

  1493. the right

  1494. posture of

  1495. heart.

  1496. And the

  1497. way that

  1498. we go

  1499. about getting

  1500. the right

  1501. posture of

  1502. heart,

  1503. a humble

  1504. posture of

  1505. heart,

  1506. when we're

  1507. in the

  1508. midst of

  1509. serving,

  1510. is fixing

  1511. our eyes

  1512. on Jesus,

  1513. the author

  1514. and perfecter

  1515. of our

  1516. faith,

  1517. who for

  1518. the joy

  1519. set before

  1520. him endured

  1521. the cross.

  1522. Joy is

  1523. to be

  1524. fought for

  1525. in the

  1526. Christian

  1527. faith.

  1528. We can

  1529. descend

  1530. quickly just

  1531. into the

  1532. nuts and

  1533. bolts of

  1534. serving

  1535. practicalities

  1536. and not

  1537. tend to

  1538. our hearts.

  1539. Humble

  1540. yourself,

  1541. experiencing

  1542. the joy

  1543. of the

  1544. Savior.

  1545. Fix

  1546. your eyes

  1547. on him.

  1548. Blessed

  1549. are those

  1550. who humble

  1551. themselves.

  1552. I just

  1553. want to

  1554. say one

  1555. more thing

  1556. before I

  1557. get some

  1558. more

  1559. practicalities.

  1560. This has

  1561. to do with

  1562. posture of

  1563. heart.

  1564. What Jesus

  1565. is telling

  1566. us here

  1567. is not

  1568. a matter

  1569. of gifting.

  1570. All of

  1571. us are

  1572. called to

  1573. serve.

  1574. All of

  1575. us are

  1576. called to

  1577. have a

  1578. humble

  1579. posture of

  1580. heart.

  1581. it's

  1582. not a

  1583. matter of

  1584. how gifted

  1585. you are.

  1586. It's a

  1587. matter of

  1588. posturing

  1589. yourselves

  1590. under the

  1591. glorious

  1592. kingship of

  1593. Jesus and

  1594. serving from

  1595. that.

  1596. What we

  1597. have here

  1598. is a

  1599. normal

  1600. kingdom

  1601. way of

  1602. building

  1603. being for

  1604. all citizens

  1605. of Jesus

  1606. kingdom.

  1607. So if

  1608. you're to

  1609. be a

  1610. follower of

  1611. Jesus

  1612. Christ,

  1613. you're

  1614. being called

  1615. into

  1616. humble

  1617. service

  1618. of

  1619. others.

  1620. No

  1621. exceptions.

  1622. No

  1623. exceptions in

  1624. the room.

  1625. We're all

  1626. called to

  1627. serve.

  1628. So the

  1629. question that

  1630. you could ask

  1631. right now

  1632. yourself is

  1633. this.

  1634. How am I

  1635. serving

  1636. others?

  1637. In what

  1638. practical

  1639. real ways

  1640. can I

  1641. point to

  1642. that

  1643. demonstrate

  1644. me serving

  1645. other

  1646. people?

  1647. And if

  1648. you find

  1649. yourself

  1650. coming up

  1651. short of

  1652. examples,

  1653. bring it

  1654. to the

  1655. Lord Jesus.

  1656. Lord Jesus,

  1657. would you

  1658. help me to

  1659. serve others

  1660. as you've

  1661. served me?

  1662. Okay.

  1663. You ready

  1664. for some

  1665. practical

  1666. steps?

  1667. First one,

  1668. I'm going

  1669. to isolate

  1670. a group in

  1671. the room,

  1672. husbands and

  1673. fathers.

  1674. fathers.

  1675. Husbands and

  1676. fathers,

  1677. whether you

  1678. are acknowledging

  1679. it or not,

  1680. you control

  1681. the thermostat

  1682. of your

  1683. home.

  1684. You're

  1685. setting the

  1686. tone.

  1687. Whether you

  1688. are stepping

  1689. into responsibility

  1690. or avoiding

  1691. it, you are

  1692. setting the

  1693. tone of your

  1694. home.

  1695. And we,

  1696. in light of

  1697. Jesus'

  1698. example here,

  1699. are called

  1700. to be

  1701. servants of

  1702. our wives

  1703. and children.

  1704. We lay

  1705. our lives

  1706. down for

  1707. them.

  1708. We do

  1709. good to

  1710. them, even

  1711. sacrificially.

  1712. So, husbands

  1713. and fathers,

  1714. serve your

  1715. wives and

  1716. children.

  1717. Don't whine

  1718. and complain.

  1719. Don't grumble

  1720. underneath that.

  1721. There's joy

  1722. in that.

  1723. That's God's

  1724. good design.

  1725. Now, I have a

  1726. caution, and I

  1727. caution you because

  1728. I know myself,

  1729. and this is what

  1730. I do.

  1731. after a long

  1732. day of serving

  1733. my family,

  1734. you're

  1735. legitimately

  1736. washing dishes,

  1737. mowing the

  1738. lawn, cleaning

  1739. out the

  1740. garage.

  1741. Do you

  1742. know what I

  1743. do?

  1744. Jenny, did

  1745. you see my

  1746. Christ-like

  1747. service today?

  1748. Guys, don't

  1749. do that.

  1750. Don't

  1751. Christ-like

  1752. serve your

  1753. wife and

  1754. children, and

  1755. you're like,

  1756. what do you

  1757. think about

  1758. that Christ-like

  1759. service?

  1760. That's not

  1761. Christ-like

  1762. service.

  1763. Christ-like

  1764. service, generally

  1765. speaking, likes

  1766. to go under

  1767. the radar.

  1768. Learn from

  1769. me, brothers.

  1770. One of the

  1771. things you need

  1772. to understand

  1773. about helping

  1774. people and

  1775. serving people,

  1776. we need to

  1777. help people in

  1778. a way that

  1779. doesn't hurt

  1780. them.

  1781. So just

  1782. because someone

  1783. says, you

  1784. need to serve

  1785. me this way,

  1786. doesn't mean you

  1787. should serve

  1788. them that

  1789. way.

  1790. What you

  1791. want to do

  1792. is you

  1793. want to

  1794. dignify

  1795. them in

  1796. the way

  1797. that you

  1798. serve them.

  1799. So

  1800. husbands,

  1801. fathers,

  1802. serve your

  1803. wives and

  1804. children in

  1805. the best way

  1806. possible according

  1807. to God's

  1808. word.

  1809. That's going

  1810. to mean some

  1811. hard conversations,

  1812. but they're

  1813. good conversations.

  1814. It's called

  1815. servant

  1816. leadership.

  1817. Here's some

  1818. other ways you

  1819. can care for

  1820. one another in

  1821. the church.

  1822. Childcare,

  1823. a.k.a.

  1824. wild care.

  1825. Find and

  1826. initiate a

  1827. young couple

  1828. with young

  1829. children, a

  1830. single mom,

  1831. families with

  1832. challenging

  1833. situations in the

  1834. children they're

  1835. raising, and you

  1836. go to them and

  1837. say, hey, can we

  1838. watch the kids for

  1839. a night?

  1840. Get you and your

  1841. lady out.

1842. Get the two of you

  1843. out to refresh.

  1844. We'd love to do

  1845. that for you.

  1846. And you can

  1847. just pay us

  1848. $400.

  1849. That's all.

  1850. We bear one

  1851. another's burdens.

  1852. This is big,

  1853. folks.

  1854. And we have

  1855. young families

  1856. all around us

  1857. that you will be

  1858. called blessed

  1859. by them if you're

  1860. like, we'll give

  1861. you a night out.

  1862. Meals.

  1863. Blessed are those

  1864. who watch

  1865. children.

  1866. Meals.

  1867. We can serve

  1868. one another by

  1869. preparing meals for

  1870. one another when

  1871. crisis hits.

  1872. But even better

  1873. than that, you

  1874. invite people over

  1875. to your house when

  1876. they hit a crisis,

  1877. and you share a

  1878. meal together.

  1879. You do this

  1880. together.

  1881. You minister to

  1882. them not with just

  1883. a meal, but with

  1884. your presence.

  1885. Blessed are those

  1886. who serve up a

  1887. meal.

  1888. You give rides.

  1889. Some people among

  1890. us don't have cars,

1891. and so we can use

  1892. our cars to serve

  1893. other people by

  1894. getting them places,

  1895. grocery stores.

  1896. The downtown area

  1897. has a bit of a food

  1898. desert.

1899. We can get them to

  1900. and from appointments.

  1901. We can gather

  1902. them, get them,

  1903. and bring them to

  1904. our Sunday gathering,

  1905. get them home from

  1906. our Sunday gathering,

  1907. and as they're in

  1908. the car with you,

  1909. you're not an Uber

  1910. driver, a Lyft

  1911. driver.

  1912. You're a brother and

  1913. sister in the Lord,

1914. so you get to know

  1915. them in the car.

  1916. Rides.

  1917. Blessed are those

  1918. who give rides.

  1919. friends.

1920. The last one I want

1921. to share with you is

  1922. probably the hardest.

  1923. It's not getting

  1924. grime out of people's

  1925. toes, though.

  1926. It's harder.

  1927. I titled it a

  1928. listening presence.

  1929. We live in a high-paced,

  1930. individualistic culture.

  1931. People often feel

  1932. left out and

  1933. isolated, and so we

  1934. can serve one another

  1935. by just showing up

  1936. and listening.

  1937. You show up and

  1938. listen.

  1939. You hear people.

  1940. People.

  1941. I regularly ask God

  1942. when I meet with

  1943. people, oh God, give

  1944. me an instructed ear

  1945. and an instructed

  1946. tongue.

  1947. So you listen.

  1948. You listen for where

  1949. people are, and when

  1950. they know that you're

  1951. listening, do you know

  1952. what happens?

  1953. You get to serve

  1954. them.

  1955. Get to love them.

  1956. Blessed are those

  1957. who show up and

  1958. listen.

  1959. There's other kinds

  1960. of serving.

  1961. Sunday morning

  1962. breakfast, the

  1963. Tuesday night

  1964. shalom meal,

  1965. king's place.

  1966. Oh, that's a great

  1967. place to serve.

  1968. King's kids.

  1969. Do you know what?

  1970. We also serve our

  1971. enemies.

  1972. Jesus washed the

  1973. feet of his

  1974. betrayer.

  1975. Do you know what

  1976. you do when you

  1977. don't feel like

  1978. serving?

  1979. Fix your eyes on

  1980. Jesus.

  1981. In verse 20, we

  1982. have another

  1983. truly, truly,

  1984. I say to you,

  1985. whoever receives

  1986. the one I send

  1987. receives me, and

  1988. whoever receives me

  1989. receives the one who

  1990. sent me.

  1991. Up until this point,

  1992. Jesus has been

  1993. talking about the

  1994. Father sending him,

  1995. and now he's

  1996. shifted that.

  1997. He's talking about

  1998. him sending us,

  1999. and he's sending us

  2000. out as lowly

  2001. servants.

  2002. servants.

  2003. We are Christ, his

  2004. servant

  2005. representatives, and

  2006. our gospel

  2007. serving will

  2008. open doors for

  2009. our gospel

  2010. seeking in

  2011. order to expand

  2012. his gospel

  2013. kingdom.

  2014. How about this?

  2015. God in heaven, Lord

  2016. Jesus, let's

  2017. start serving one

  2018. another more and

  2019. more with these

  2020. conspicuous acts of

  2021. service, not for us,

  2022. but for his glory.

  2023. Blessed are those who

  2024. serve and who get

  2025. caught in their

  2026. serving.

  2027. Let's pray.

  2028. God in heaven, Lord

  2029. Jesus, we thank you

2030. so much for the way

  2031. that you have served

  2032. us and are serving

  2033. us and will continue

  2034. to serve us.

  2035. You've served us in

  2036. the greatest way

  2037. possible by becoming

  2038. a ransom for us.

  2039. Lord, would you bring

  2040. us into greater

2041. degrees of joy as we

  2042. serve more and more

  2043. people, not because

  2044. we have to, but

  2045. because we want to.

  2046. Would you bring

  2047. glory to your name

  2048. through us, this

  2049. little church in the

  2050. middle of Kenosha?

  2051. Make a name for

  2052. yourself, Lord Jesus.

2053. It's in your name we

  2054. pray.

  2055. Amen.
