  1. This morning, we continue our study of Luke as we take a look at our mission, what our mission is to share God's message.

  2. In just a few minutes, Tobin's going to unpack a little bit for us on Luke chapter 10, verses 1 through 16.

    Luke 10:1–16

  3. As we continue preparing our hearts to receive that with song and spoken word,

  4. I'm going to invite you this morning to read the scripture with me as opposed to just following along.

  5. So if you would stand in the honor of reading of God's word.

  6. This morning, the words will be on the screen, so please follow along and read with me now.

  7. Go, behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.

  8. Carry no money belt, no bag, no shoes.

  9. And greet no one on the way.

  10. Whatever house you enter, first say,

  11. Peace be to this house.

  12. If a man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him.

  13. But if not, it will return to you.

  14. Stay in that house, eating and drinking what they give you.

  15. For the laborer is worthy of his wages.

  16. Do not keep moving from house to house.

  17. Whatever city you enter and they receive you,

  18. eat what is set before you.

  19. And heal those in it who are sick.

  20. And say to them,

  21. The kingdom of God has come near to you.

  22. But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you,

  23. go out into the streets and say,

  24. Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet,

  25. we wipe off in protest against you.

  26. Yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near.

  27. I say to you,

  28. it will be more tolerable in the day for Sodom than for that city.

  29. Woe to you, Chorazin.

  30. Woe to you, Bethsaida.

  31. For if the miracles had been performed in Tyre and Sidon,

  32. which occurred in you,

  33. they would have repented long ago,

  34. sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

  35. But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon

  36. in the judgment than for you.

  37. And you, Capernaum,

  38. will not be exalted to heaven, will you?

  39. You will be brought down to Hades.

  40. The one who listens to you listens to me.

  41. And the one who rejects you rejects me.

  42. And he who rejects me rejects the one who sent me.

  43. This is the reading of God's word.

  44. Just continue to worship with us.

  45. Okay.

  46. So the lottery tickets are waiting out back.

  47. And, you know, whatever you...

  48. We're trying to make one of that more specific to our culture here.

  49. That's definitely...

  50. But have you ever been in a me church?

  51. That was a joke, right?

  52. That's not what we're shooting for.

  53. Just to make sure of that, okay?

  54. That was a joke.

  55. But sometimes we struggle with whether we know that that's true or not.

  56. How you guys doing?

  57. Good?

  58. Good.

  59. Okay.

  60. That's the most positive response I've ever received.

  61. That's very good.

  62. We want to welcome you to Watermark Church.

  63. We are...

  64. We're on a journey.

  65. We're talking about the book of Luke.

  66. It seems like we've been in it for at least a year and a half, off and on.

  67. And we are only at chapter 10.

  68. And so we're going to look at chapter 10.

  69. Now, remember, Luke is one of the four Gospels.

  70. And it was written by a physician, a very intelligent man.

  71. He probably uses some of the best Greek in writing the language that the New Testament has.

  72. And Luke is basically writing to his friend.

  73. His friend's name is Theophilus.

  74. We don't know much about Theophilus.

  75. We know that he was probably a very wealthy and powerful individual in the Roman government.

  76. And Theophilus came to this struggle in his life.

  77. And he wanted to ask Luke, was Jesus real?

  78. Was Jesus really who people said he was?

  79. Did Jesus do everything that the disciples are talking about?

  80. Is he God?

  81. Is he worth giving my whole life to?

  82. Those are the questions that he was asking Luke.

  83. And those are the questions that Luke is trying to answer for him.

  84. And as I think about that, those are some of the same questions that you and I ask today, right?

  85. I mean, is Jesus really the only way?

  86. I mean, is he really doing all those things?

  87. And was that just back then and he doesn't do them now?

  88. I mean, is he really worth giving my life to?

  89. My job to?

  90. Can I really trust him?

  91. Is he good?

  92. And those are some of the things that Luke is writing in his Gospel to share with his friend and us about Jesus.

  93. Luke 10 is a very interesting passage.

  94. I was going through it this week, the last couple weeks.

  95. I felt like if I, to do it justice, I probably would have to talk for about three hours on it.

  96. Going through, because there's so many stories and pictures and nuances.

  97. And the words are very specific.

  98. They have a very specific meaning.

  99. But I'm not going to do that.

  100. So you're kind of going, whew.

  101. But I want to talk about this idea of what does it mean to be on mission?

  102. What does it mean for us as a church to exist?

  103. As I was praying through this message, I was reminded of this story of Hudson Taylor.

  104. Hudson Taylor was one of the great missionaries to China.

  105. And the story goes that Taylor was on this boat from Shanghai to Ningpo.

  106. And as he was on this boat, this junk, he was sharing with some friends.

  107. And he was sharing with this very elegantly dressed Chinese man named Peter.

  108. Peter wasn't a follower of Christ, but Peter was very interested in what Hudson Taylor had to say.

  109. And Hudson Taylor could tell that he was being convicted by God's Spirit to ask more and more questions.

  110. And as they were talking and as the boat was going on, it hit a lurch and Peter fell overboard.

  111. And he sank like a rock.

  112. And Hudson Taylor, to his surprise, looked around and no one jumped in.

  113. No one threw a life thing.

  114. No one stopped anything.

  115. And he started yelling, man overboard, man overboard in Chinese, because he could speak Chinese very well.

  116. And no one stopped.

  117. And so finally he ran up and he cut the rope on the sails of the junk.

  118. So the sails collapsed and the boat effectively stopped.

  119. And he jumped in the water and he dove and he dove trying to find Peter.

  120. And he came up and he was yelling for help, yelling for help, help, help, help.

  121. There's a person drowning here.

  122. I need help.

  123. He looks over to the side of the shore and there's some fishermen in their boat fishing over there.

  124. And he yells to them, can you come help me, my friends, in the water?

  125. He's drowning.

  126. I need your help.

  127. Bring your nets right now.

  128. We can save him.

  129. And the fishermen looked at him and go, we're busy.

  130. We're too busy.

  131. We're working.

  132. We're catching fish.

  133. We can't do this.

  134. And Taylor was screaming at them and finally said, how can I get you over here?

  135. And the guys go, pay us.

  136. And so after a couple seconds of bartering, Taylor empties his pocket and he says,

  137. if you could have all of this, if you come right now to help me with my friend.

  138. And immediately the fishermen lifted up their nets and they came over and they dragged their net.

  139. And within less than a minute, they pulled up Peter's body.

  140. But it was too late.

  141. Peter had drowned.

  142. And Taylor stood there in disbelief.

  143. And he couldn't believe how people kept working.

  144. And were more concerned about their money and their livelihood than the drowning man.

  145. How do you feel when you hear that story?

  146. When I first heard it, I was so angry.

  147. I was so frustrated.

  148. I had experiences like that before.

  149. And I was so condemning.

  150. I wanted to condemn those men.

  151. But I realized that as I condemned them,

  152. I condemned myself.

  153. Because often I am just like them.

  154. I'm busy at work.

  155. I'm busy doing stuff.

  156. I'm busy living life.

  157. And all around me, people are drowning.

  158. And I think it's all about me.

  159. And I don't want to help them.

  160. I don't know if you guys ever felt that way, but I have.

  161. Especially as I started preparing for this sermon.

  162. The hard things about sermons sometimes is

  163. God really uses them

  164. in the pastor's life to really hit us over the head

  165. and ask us hard questions.

  166. And so if today you feel like there's a finger pointing at you,

  167. realize that there's about a billion of them

  168. pointing back at me and at my heart.

  169. As I pray for us as a church,

  170. why are we here and what are we doing?

  171. The passage in Luke 10

  172. is a very interesting passage.

  173. It says in verse 1,

  174. now after this, what after this?

  175. You look back in verse chapter 9

  176. and you see that Jesus has done miracles.

  177. He's healed people.

  178. But at this point,

  179. he basically turns his face towards Jerusalem

  180. and he's going to go to the cross.

  181. And so whenever you see in the New Testament

  182. his faces towards Jerusalem,

  183. what you automatically understand

  184. is it means sacrifice and the cross and death

  185. and pain and separation for us.

  186. And it says that the Lord appointed,

  187. and basically he gives them a task in Greek,

  188. 70 others.

  189. And this is a very interesting word.

  190. It's 70 is a very specific,

  191. some of you might say 72.

  192. We're not going to get in a discussion over that.

  193. But we'll talk about it later.

  194. But 70 was the number of nations

  195. that when you read Genesis 10 and 11,

  196. when they were building this big tower called Babel

  197. and God came down to confuse their language

  198. and they separated it,

  199. that the scripture says it's 70.

  200. 70 nations went out from there.

  201. And so Christ appoints one evangelist

  202. or one lay person

  203. because these aren't professional people.

  204. They're just you and me.

  205. And he appoints one person per nation

  206. and it says he sends them out in pairs,

  207. which is also very important,

  208. I think for a couple reasons.

  209. One is that it's scary doing it by yourself.

  210. But two, the scripture says

  211. that wherever two testify to something,

  212. then it is true.

  213. And in a court of law,

  214. one person's testimony could not stand,

  215. but two had to be done.

  216. And so Jesus pairs up these people,

  217. these 70 you and me.

  218. And as he's about to send them out,

  219. he looks out over the fields

  220. and he says these words.

  221. He says,

  222. the harvest is plentiful,

  223. but the laborers are few.

  224. Now he's using farming language.

  225. And we've already established it.

  226. I think I'm one of the only farmers around here.

  227. But he's talking about this huge field of grain

  228. and the grain heads are so heavy

  229. that the grain is drooping.

  230. And he looks out there

  231. and he sees this amazing harvest.

  232. And what he's talking about is spiritually.

  233. He's talking about people's lives.

  234. He's talking about people who don't know Christ,

  235. but they need to know Christ.

  236. He's talking about people who don't know Christ,

  237. but they're asking questions.

  238. And he's looking out at all these places.

  239. And he's saying there's people everywhere.

  240. It's ripe.

  241. And I'm the Lord of the harvest.

  242. It's interesting when you look at harvest time

  243. in a farm that there's just,

  244. in harvest time,

  245. you only do one thing and you harvest.

  246. I mean, everything else stops.

  247. It's like, it's a week, two weeks,

  248. depends what your crop is,

  249. how big your fields are.

  250. But everyone comes together

  251. and they harvest and they harvest

  252. because if you wait too long,

  253. the crop is ruined.

  254. That if the grain stays on the stalk too long,

  255. that it starts to mildew.

  256. Or the animals start to gather it.

  257. Or the hail comes out

  258. and it hails out your crop.

  259. And so if you wait too long,

  260. everything is destroyed.

  261. And so when he uses his words,

  262. the harvest is plentiful,

  263. he's talking about it's the right time,

  264. it's the right time,

  265. it's the right time.

  266. And so he's about to send them out

  267. and the first thing he says to them,

  268. and I'm only gonna share with you

  269. a couple things that stick out here.

  270. The first thing he says is pray.

  271. Pray.

  272. Pray.

  273. He says it here in verse two

  274. and he's saying to them,

  275. the harvest is plentiful,

  276. but the laborers are few.

  277. Therefore, beseech the Lord of the harvest

  278. to send out laborers into his field.

  279. That word beseech is very specific.

  280. It means to pray.

  281. It means to beg.

  282. It means to ask.

  283. And when you read scripture,

  284. I don't think we get this right

  285. because I'm still on this journey too

  286. about prayer and talking

  287. and things like that.

  288. But when we read scripture,

  289. you never see a person praying

  290. and they're just like this.

  291. But in Hebrew and in the culture,

  292. prayer was always like this.

  293. And whenever you saw prayer in the Father,

  294. Abba was always connected

  295. and it was a sense that there was a child

  296. and a reaching up to his dad.

  297. And so when he's talking about prayer here,

  298. I think it's something different than we think

  299. because he's talking about beseeching,

  300. screaming, yelling,

  301. like a kid yells for his dad.

  302. I remember when we had this agreement.

  303. Okay, so guys,

  304. you have to have an disagreement with your wives.

  305. We had Caitlin, our last child.

  306. And the agreement was that

  307. I would wake up in the morning

  308. and bring Caitlin to Christina

  309. so Christina could stay in bed

  310. and breastfeed Caitlin.

  311. I know maybe it's too much information or whatever.

  312. But I would wake up

  313. and I would just hear our kid,

  314. It's like there's a snake in your bed, right?

  315. You're like,

  316. Cat, what's going on here?

  317. There's somebody in there

  318. or there's a dog biting them

  319. or there's something going on.

  320. And the kid's just screaming

  321. and the kid has his hand up in the air

  322. and he's crying out.

  323. And that's the imagery that he has here of prayer.

  324. He says,

  325. Pray, cry out for the Lord of the harvest

  326. because we need him.

  327. Because if he doesn't come through for us,

  328. everything is lost.

  329. I'll never forget our last time

  330. is that we finally made this decision

  331. to wean Caitlin.

  332. And I walked in there

  333. and she was just screaming,

  334. ah!

  335. It was going crazy.

  336. I mean, it was amazing.

  337. This is a true story.

  338. Amazing.

  339. So I picked her up.

  340. I tried to comfort her.

  341. I changed her diapers.

  342. And she was out of control.

  343. And I brought her in to Christina

  344. and she was sucking her thumbs.

  345. She always sucked her thumbs like this.

  346. For some reason, she was two.

  347. So she was crying and screaming in comfort,

  348. sucking her thumbs.

  349. And I laid her down.

  350. And right as I laid her down,

  351. she's about to get to Christina's arms.

  352. She sees Christina's feeding mechanism.

  353. And she turns around and looks at me

  354. and she goes,

  355. Thank you.

  356. I was freaking out.

  357. Thank you.

  358. But here, this is this imagery here.

  359. The imagery is that we scream out,

  360. that we cry,

  361. we pray,

  362. we ask God for the harvest.

  363. And the question we have to ask ourselves

  364. is do we do that?

  365. Do we cry out?

  366. Do we pray?

  367. Do we ask God for the harvest?

  368. How do we pray?

  369. Do we pray for the harvest?

  370. I mean, we pray for our jobs

  371. when our jobs are in trouble.

  372. And we pray for our money

  373. when our money's low.

  374. We pray for our family

  375. when our wives are out of control.

  376. We pray for our spouse.

  377. We pray for our future spouse

  378. when we don't have one.

  379. But here he says,

  380. pray for the harvest.

  381. Do we pray?

  382. Do we pray for the harvest?

  383. Do we cry out for lost people all around us?

  384. I mean, do we pray for Bel Air

  385. and Cyberport

  386. and Citibank

  387. and Belchers

  388. and ISF

  389. and ESF

  390. and Hong Kong U

  391. and Wafu

  392. and Baguio

  393. and Kennedy Town?

  394. Do we pray for those people?

  395. It's one of the reasons

  396. we felt like God was calling us

  397. to start this church

  398. is we didn't want to be a church

  399. that collected Christians

  400. from other churches

  401. but we wanted to be a church

  402. that was reaching out

  403. and praying for people

  404. and being on a mission

  405. and being about saving them

  406. and being God

  407. allowing us to use

  408. God

  409. allowing us to be used by God

  410. and his power to flow through us

  411. to reach people

  412. who are lost.

  413. Do we pray for our workplace?

  414. Do we pray for the lost people there?

  415. Do we pray for Baguio?

  416. Do we pray for Rebecca

  417. and Clement

  418. and Grandma Kwok

  419. and Charles

  420. and Philly

  421. and Kevin

  422. and Dad

  423. and Estelle

  424. and Donald

  425. Jocelyn

  426. Danis

  427. Vincent

  428. Howie

  429. Haiyi

  430. Kevin Chan

  431. Do we pray for those people?

  432. Jesus said

  433. I'm sending you out

  434. and the first thing

  435. you got to do

  436. the first thing

  437. you have to do

  438. the first thing

  439. that you must do

  440. is you must pray

  441. because if you don't pray

  442. I can't work

  443. and it's all about God

  444. doing it

  445. and you realize here

  446. in chapter verse 2

  447. that it's God

  448. God's the one

  449. who sends the laborer

  450. it's not the pastor

  451. getting up

  452. giving you a guilt trip

  453. but it's God

  454. sending you out

  455. it's God working

  456. in your heart

  457. it's you realizing

  458. what God has done

  459. for us

  460. and then trusting

  461. him to be good

  462. the second thing

  463. that sticks out here

  464. is verses 3 through 8

  465. and it's about the mission

  466. the mission that we're sent on

  467. the mission in verse 3

  468. is really clear

  469. he says go

  470. in Greek

  471. it's an imperative

  472. it's a present imperative

  473. it means always be going

  474. it means stop

  475. do not stop

  476. always be doing this

  477. go behold

  478. I send you

  479. in the imagery

  480. there is really clear

  481. it's of an ambassador

  482. so the minute

  483. Jesus people heard this

  484. they would have think

  485. you're asking us

  486. to be ambassadors

  487. and in that culture

  488. ambassadors were very well known

  489. that whenever an ambassador came

  490. he was always preceded

  491. by the banner

  492. of the country

  493. or the king

  494. or whatever he represented

  495. and when people heard him talk

  496. they realized

  497. that it wasn't him talking

  498. but it was the king talking

  499. or the nation talking

  500. and Jesus commissions

  501. the 70 people

  502. like you and me

  503. and he says

  504. go

  505. I send you

  506. and there's this huge sense

  507. that we are ambassadors

  508. as we go

  509. have you ever thought about that?

  510. now before Christina

  511. and I got married

  512. she always wanted to marry

  513. an ambassador

  514. she said it was because

  515. of the parties

  516. they would have

  517. and I think she had

  518. this romantic view of this

  519. but I thought it would be

  520. very interesting

  521. to be an ambassador

  522. because you walk into

  523. any place

  524. and you don't even

  525. really represent yourself

  526. you represent the country

  527. that sends you

  528. right?

  529. I mean some of us

  530. fake it sometimes

  531. when we wear shirts

  532. with our schools

  533. and other things

  534. and wow

  535. you're from this school

  536. or you're from that school

  537. you're not really

  538. representing yourself

  539. you're representing the school

  540. and here he's saying

  541. you're ambassadors

  542. and you're going out

  543. and you're representing

  544. God

  545. and so the question

  546. I have to ask myself

  547. which I've been asking

  548. all week is

  549. what kind of ambassador

  550. am I?

  551. am I a good ambassador?

  552. do I take the message

  553. to the father

  554. and relay it

  555. just like he wants me to?

  556. I mean no ambassador

  557. would get a message

  558. from his government

  559. and say

  560. you know I really want

  561. but you know

  562. I'm just really busy right now

  563. I can't present that

  564. to the other government

  565. or you know

  566. it's going to be

  567. really difficult

  568. for me to share

  569. these things to them

  570. and maybe I'll just

  571. wait for a better time

  572. or you know

  573. maybe they're

  574. going to not like me

  575. but the scripture

  576. is really clear

  577. that we're ambassadors

  578. and we're invested

  579. with God's power

  580. and his strength

  581. in the kingdom

  582. and we're called

  583. to go out

  584. and to share the word

  585. now in this mission

  586. we're given two warnings

  587. which I think

  588. are very intense

  589. the first warning

  590. he tells us

  591. and it's in verse 3

  592. he says behold

  593. I send you out

  594. as lambs

  595. in the midst of wolves

  596. have you ever seen

  597. lambs in the midst

  598. of wolves?

  599. it's not good

  600. I mean it's ugly

  601. and the scripture says

  602. that you and I

  603. are sheep

  604. and Christ

  605. is sending you

  606. and I out

  607. as lambs

  608. in the midst

  609. of all these wolves

  610. and the message

  611. is clear

  612. the message is

  613. the people

  614. that we go to

  615. won't like us

  616. and they won't

  617. like the message

  618. we send

  619. and I always

  620. struggled with that

  621. because I just

  622. thought maybe

  623. if people's lives

  624. were terrible

  625. they would love

  626. to hear the message

  627. of God

  628. who loves them

  629. who cares for them

  630. who has a plan

  631. for them

  632. who died for them

  633. that has to be

  634. incredibly good news

  635. but the scripture

  636. says no

  637. they're going to

  638. hate that

  639. what he's saying

  640. here is

  641. what they would

  642. rather hear you

  643. say

  644. they would rather

  645. hear you say

  646. something sexy

  647. like hey

  648. you know

  649. Christianity

  650. is about a bunch

  651. of rules

  652. and if you do

  653. all these rules

  654. you're okay

  655. and if you follow

  656. these steps

  657. you're good

  658. and if you work

  659. hard

  660. you're okay

  661. and you know

  662. God helps those

  663. who helps himself

  664. doesn't he

  665. and at the end

  666. of the sermon

  667. if I give you

  668. five points

  669. everything's going

  670. to be perfect

  671. if you complete

  672. all those points

  673. and if we preach

  674. that message

  675. people would love us

  676. I mean the church

  677. would be packed out

  678. with people

  679. more than we have

  680. now

  681. we'd have a mega church

  682. I mean that's what

  683. every other religion

  684. preaches

  685. do this

  686. do that

  687. don't do this

  688. do this

  689. don't do that

  690. if you do these

  691. things you're okay

  692. you pray this way

  693. you're okay

  694. God is there

  695. you do what you

  696. need to do

  697. God does what

  698. he does to do

  699. everything's great

  700. but Jesus says

  701. that's not the

  702. message of the

  703. kingdom of God

  704. he says we preach

  705. a gospel that's

  706. full of grace

  707. and helplessness

  708. Jesus says we preach

  709. about lostness

  710. and darkness

  711. and people walking

  712. blindedly

  713. we talk a message

  714. about if they don't

  715. go through Christ

  716. they have no hope

  717. at all

  718. the gospel

  719. and Luke says

  720. that Jesus says

  721. to his disciples

  722. to you and I

  723. that when we go out

  724. and we share that

  725. message to people

  726. they're not going

  727. to like it

  728. they're going to

  729. hate it

  730. and chances are

  731. they might hate us

  732. he gives us

  733. another warning

  734. in verse

  735. verse 4

  736. he goes on

  737. he says

  738. carry no money

  739. belt

  740. no bag

  741. no shoes

  742. and greet

  743. no one

  744. on the way

  745. circle greet

  746. no one

  747. on the way

  748. I think it's

  749. amazing

  750. it's a story

  751. and the minute

  752. Jesus listeners

  753. heard it

  754. they would understand

  755. exactly what happened

  756. it's from 2 Kings 4

  757. so tonight

  758. when you go back

  759. read 2 Kings 4

  760. it's an amazing passage

  761. Elijah is the prophet

  762. of God

  763. he's wandering

  764. he has no place

  765. to stay

  766. and God sends

  767. this woman

  768. to take care of him

  769. but this woman

  770. has no kid

  771. her husband

  772. and her are barren

  773. and so Elijah

  774. prays for this woman

  775. and God allows them

  776. to have a kid

  777. and she has a kid

  778. and this boy grows up

  779. and one day Elijah

  780. is no longer with them

  781. and she sends message

  782. to Elijah

  783. my son is dead

  784. my son was working

  785. in the fields

  786. his head got too hot

  787. he had this

  788. overstroke

  789. heat

  790. whatever

  791. and he's dead

  792. and Elijah takes

  793. his staff

  794. and he hands it

  795. to his assistant

  796. and he says

  797. take the staff

  798. you're going

  799. to dead people

  800. you're going

  801. to a mom

  802. who's grieving

  803. take the staff

  804. and run

  805. as fast as you can

  806. get to that woman's house

  807. because her son

  808. is dead

  809. and she needs you

  810. and when you walk

  811. in that house

  812. you put that staff

  813. on that boy's forehead

  814. and when you do that

  815. the kid's going to

  816. come back to life

  817. and oh by the way

  818. don't greet anyone

  819. on the way

  820. what he was saying

  821. to his servant

  822. is the message

  823. that I'm sending you

  824. on is so important

  825. that you don't want

  826. to get sidetracked

  827. that the greetings

  828. in the Middle Eastern

  829. culture can become

  830. so elaborate

  831. that you talk to somebody

  832. and you just have

  833. to talk to them

  834. and sometimes a greeting

  835. can last a whole day

  836. and Elijah was saying

  837. to his servant

  838. the message

  839. and the mission

  840. that I'm sending you

  841. on is so important

  842. you don't have time

  843. to waste

  844. because there's

  845. a dead person there

  846. and Jesus says

  847. the same to us

  848. he says be careful

  849. because as you go

  850. on this journey

  851. you're going to be

  852. distracted

  853. and it's going to be

  854. easy to become

  855. distracted

  856. and you don't want

  857. to be distracted

  858. because there's

  859. dead people all around

  860. you

  861. and they need to

  862. hear the word of God

  863. you ever been

  864. distracted

  865. I think it's really

  866. easy in our world

  867. to be distracted

  868. isn't it

  869. there's just so many

  870. things around us

  871. that call and cry out

  872. for us

  873. and ask us to say

  874. put your attention here

  875. and before you know it

  876. you've forgotten

  877. your mission

  878. and you're about

  879. building your own

  880. kingdom

  881. and making your

  882. lives comfortable

  883. and worrying about

  884. your next vacation

  885. I'm talking about

  886. myself

  887. but Jesus tells

  888. his disciples

  889. that when you go

  890. be on track

  891. be on mission

  892. because what you're

  893. doing is you're

  894. bringing dead people

  895. to life

  896. and it's easy

  897. to be distracted

  898. and you don't

  899. want to be distracted

  900. because people

  901. need to hear

  902. and they need you

  903. beside them

  904. the next thing

  905. that sticks out

  906. to me really quickly

  907. here is in verse 9

  908. and it's the message

  909. he says

  910. whatever city

  911. you enter into

  912. you've received

  913. you eat what is

  914. set before you

  915. and we can come

  916. back and talk

  917. about that

  918. there's a lot

  919. of cultural issues

  920. going on there

  921. because they're

  922. going into

  923. non-Jewish cities

  924. they're going

  925. to all the cities

  926. that Jesus is going

  927. to visit before

  928. he hits Jerusalem

  929. and there's

  930. pagan cities

  931. there's Jewish cities

  932. and the guys

  933. are worried about

  934. what they're going

  935. to eat

  936. and Jesus says

  937. don't worry

  938. about that

  939. he says

  940. when you go in

  941. heal those

  942. who are in it

  943. and those

  944. who are sick

  945. and say to them

  946. that the kingdom

  947. of God

  948. has come near you

  949. the kingdom

  950. of God

  951. has come near

  952. you

  953. what he's saying

  954. is that when you

  955. go and you meet

  956. people

  957. you tell them

  958. that God's

  959. presence

  960. God's spirit

  961. God's grace

  962. God's mercy

  963. God's salvation

  964. has come into

  965. your midst

  966. and the minute

  967. someone heard that

  968. they knew they

  969. had to make a choice

  970. the minute someone

  971. in Jesus' day

  972. heard the kingdom

  973. of God

  974. has come near to you

  975. the first thing

  976. that would come

  977. into their mind

  978. is okay

  979. here's this line

  980. what side of this

  981. line am I going

  982. to step on

  983. am I going to be

  984. with the kingdom

  985. of God

  986. or am I going to

  987. be with myself

  988. over here

  989. and Jesus sends

  990. them out

  991. and he says

  992. hey

  993. you're going to

  994. go into these places

  995. and you're going

  996. to share this word

  997. and this word is

  998. that God's presence

  999. is with you

  1000. he also says

  1001. you're going to

  1002. do something amazing

  1003. that you're going

  1004. to heal people

  1005. that you're going

  1006. to take care of

  1007. people

  1008. and healing

  1009. took place

  1010. and miracles

  1011. happen

  1012. and miracles

  1013. happen

  1014. and God

  1015. still does

  1016. miracles

  1017. and he says

  1018. I'm going to

  1019. do miracles

  1020. through you

  1021. and in you

  1022. as you walk

  1023. in my name

  1024. and it's important

  1025. to remember

  1026. that these miracles

  1027. always validate

  1028. the message

  1029. of God

  1030. that whenever

  1031. you read the Bible

  1032. and you see

  1033. miracles happen

  1034. they're almost

  1035. always right beside

  1036. God's word being

  1037. preached

  1038. and God's

  1039. messenger going

  1040. out

  1041. and what these

  1042. miracles do

  1043. is say

  1044. God is real

  1045. and he's there

  1046. and this word

  1047. is true

  1048. and there's power

  1049. in God

  1050. I remember in 1989

  1051. I spent some time

  1052. in Thailand

  1053. and I was with

  1054. a Thai staff

  1055. for a whole summer

  1056. with Campus Crusade

  1057. and we saw

  1058. just weird

  1059. weird things

  1060. happening

  1061. people

  1062. people doing

  1063. just demon

  1064. possessed people

  1065. people who were

  1066. doing things

  1067. that were irrational

  1068. and unexplainable

  1069. and people

  1070. who were healing

  1071. people

  1072. but through the

  1073. power of the devil

  1074. they would say that

  1075. and one night

  1076. I got together

  1077. with the staff

  1078. and this guy

  1079. was just telling

  1080. the story

  1081. about how his

  1082. parents

  1083. who were animists

  1084. put a spirit

  1085. in his house

  1086. and the spirit

  1087. was wrestling

  1088. with him

  1089. physically

  1090. every time

  1091. he walked

  1092. into this house

  1093. and I asked

  1094. the guy

  1095. I said

  1096. how do you

  1097. survive here

  1098. what do you do

  1099. how do you

  1100. fight this type

  1101. of spiritual warfare

  1102. and the guy

  1103. told me

  1104. he said

  1105. he didn't even blink

  1106. he said

  1107. first we heal

  1108. their sick

  1109. then we cast

  1110. out their demons

  1111. then they see

  1112. that our God

  1113. is greater

  1114. than their God

  1115. first we heal

  1116. their sick

  1117. then we cast

  1118. out their demons

  1119. then they see

  1120. that our God

  1121. is greater

  1122. than their God

  1123. Jesus says

  1124. as you go out

  1125. on this mission

  1126. remember the message

  1127. and remember

  1128. what you're supposed

  1129. to do

  1130. and what you're

  1131. supposed to share

  1132. and it's about

  1133. your life

  1134. and what God

  1135. has done

  1136. in your life

  1137. and I think

  1138. sometimes

  1139. we just struggle

  1140. with this

  1141. we have a hard

  1142. time with this

  1143. but the message

  1144. of salvation

  1145. is really clear

  1146. in this passage

  1147. Jesus isn't saying

  1148. get a PhD

  1149. Jesus isn't saying

  1150. learn all your

  1151. apologetics

  1152. Jesus isn't saying

  1153. you need to have

  1154. these classes

  1155. and be this mature

  1156. before you share

  1157. the faith

  1158. Jesus is saying

  1159. you walk into

  1160. this world

  1161. you see needs

  1162. you see people's

  1163. lives who are

  1164. in distress

  1165. you meet those

  1166. needs

  1167. you serve other

  1168. people

  1169. you share with

  1170. them

  1171. and when the people

  1172. ask why do you

  1173. do that

  1174. you say

  1175. it's because of

  1176. my faith in

  1177. Jesus Christ

  1178. and I'd like to

  1179. share with that

  1180. to you someday

  1181. it's just that

  1182. easy

  1183. but sometimes

  1184. I think that I

  1185. just become so

  1186. confused and I

  1187. make sharing my

  1188. faith such a

  1189. difficult thing

  1190. and the passage

  1191. here says

  1192. basically you go

  1193. into people's

  1194. house you heal

  1195. their sick

  1196. you meet their

  1197. needs

  1198. that word heal

  1199. actually also

  1200. means to serve

  1201. you serve other

  1202. people you serve

  1203. them around you

  1204. you serve them

  1205. you serve the

  1206. sick you heal

  1207. the sick and you

  1208. tell them that

  1209. God is near

  1210. that God is in

  1211. you

  1212. that God has

  1213. changed you

  1214. and that they

  1215. need the gospel

  1216. to change their

  1217. lives

  1218. the message is

  1219. really clear

  1220. and the message

  1221. is that the

  1222. kingdom of God

  1223. is near

  1224. and God

  1225. does that

  1226. and shows that

  1227. and changes

  1228. people's lives

  1229. all around us

  1230. as we would

  1231. just talk about

  1232. it

  1233. the last section

  1234. of this passage

  1235. is harsh

  1236. I mean I've

  1237. been in churches

  1238. where people

  1239. don't even talk

  1240. about it

  1241. I mean I've

  1242. been in churches

  1243. where they

  1244. deleted these

  1245. verses out of

  1246. this passage

  1247. because it was

  1248. not sexy

  1249. it was too hard

  1250. for people to

  1251. hear

  1252. look at what

  1253. he says there

  1254. but whatever

  1255. city you

  1256. enter in

  1257. and they do

  1258. not receive you

  1259. go out into

  1260. the streets

  1261. and say

  1262. even the dust

  1263. of your city

  1264. which clings

  1265. to your feet

  1266. you wipe off

  1267. and protest

  1268. against them

  1269. yet be sure

  1270. of this

  1271. the kingdom

  1272. of God

  1273. has come

  1274. near

  1275. and I say

  1276. that you

  1277. be more

  1278. tolerable

  1279. for the

  1280. city of

  1281. Sodom

  1282. we put

  1283. that reference

  1284. in your

  1285. bulletin

  1286. for you

  1287. to read

  1288. than for

  1289. this city

  1290. woe to you

  1291. Chorazin

  1292. woe to you

  1293. Bethsaida

  1294. we have some

  1295. pictures of that

  1296. up here

  1297. I don't know

  1298. if we have

  1299. them

  1300. but they're

  1301. basically

  1302. just ruins

  1303. now

  1304. almost immediately

  1305. after Jesus

  1306. said these

  1307. pronouncements

  1308. these cities

  1309. were destroyed

  1310. and they

  1311. disappeared

  1312. and then one

  1313. day some

  1314. monks were

  1315. hanging out

  1316. in the hills

  1317. and they

  1318. started digging

  1319. and they found

  1320. this city

  1321. but the

  1322. cities that

  1323. refused to

  1324. listen to

  1325. Christ's

  1326. message

  1327. the cities

  1328. that refused

  1329. to accept

  1330. Jesus'

  1331. messengers

  1332. the city

  1333. that refused

  1334. to accept

  1335. the word

  1336. of life

  1337. they were

  1338. destroyed

  1339. and they

  1340. disappeared

  1341. if all the

  1342. miracles that

  1343. had performed

  1344. in Tyre

  1345. and Sidon

  1346. which occurred

  1347. in you

  1348. if they had

  1349. done these

  1350. things they

  1351. would have

  1352. repented

  1353. they would

  1354. have come

  1355. to faith

  1356. they would

  1357. have been

  1358. sitting in

  1359. sackcloth

  1360. and ashes

  1361. but it would

  1362. be more

  1363. tolerable for

  1364. these cities

  1365. these Tyre

  1366. and Sidon

  1367. which are pagan

  1368. cities in the

  1369. judgment than

  1370. for you

  1371. for you

  1372. Capernaum

  1373. you will not

  1374. be exalted

  1375. to heaven

  1376. this is the

  1377. base where

  1378. Jesus did all

  1379. his miracles

  1380. and ministry

  1381. it was the

  1382. Jewish town

  1383. and they

  1384. thought they

  1385. had a special

  1386. right because

  1387. Christ was

  1388. there and

  1389. Christ says

  1390. no because

  1391. I was there

  1392. and you

  1393. didn't listen

  1394. to me I

  1395. spoke and I

  1396. did miracles and

  1397. it didn't

  1398. change your

  1399. heart I

  1400. did all of

  1401. these things

  1402. and still I

  1403. was not lord

  1404. of your life

  1405. and you

  1406. chose to say

  1407. maybe tomorrow

  1408. maybe tomorrow

  1409. what he's

  1410. saying here

  1411. is there's

  1412. people in

  1413. our church

  1414. right now

  1415. and you

  1416. don't know

  1417. Christ

  1418. and you're

  1419. saying you

  1420. hear these

  1421. messages and

  1422. you go that

  1423. sounds really

  1424. cool maybe

  1425. some other

  1426. time or this

  1427. religious thing

  1428. is kind of

  1429. cool well I'll

  1430. think about it

  1431. but the

  1432. passage says

  1433. that by

  1434. rejecting the

  1435. message you're

  1436. not rejecting

  1437. me or the

  1438. people who share

  1439. it with you

  1440. you're rejecting

  1441. Christ and

  1442. you're not

  1443. really rejecting

  1444. Christ but

  1445. you're rejecting

  1446. God and if

  1447. you reject God

  1448. things are going

  1449. to be bad

  1450. have you ever

  1451. amen

  1452. have you ever

  1453. heard someone

  1454. say that to

  1455. you

  1456. have you ever

  1457. told somebody

  1458. they're in

  1459. trouble

  1460. have you ever

  1461. told somebody

  1462. hey if you

  1463. keep going

  1464. down this

  1465. path you're

  1466. mocking God

  1467. the creator of

  1468. the universe

  1469. and I don't

  1470. need to do

  1471. anything because

  1472. God can take

  1473. care of himself

  1474. have you ever

  1475. heard that

  1476. said something

  1477. like that to

  1478. somebody

  1479. Christ says

  1480. it very

  1481. carefully and

  1482. very concisely

  1483. the one who

  1484. rejects the one

  1485. who listens to

  1486. you listens to

  1487. me and the

  1488. one who rejects

  1489. you rejects me

  1490. and he rejects

  1491. the one who

  1492. sent me

  1493. sent me

  1494. and what he's

  1495. saying here is

  1496. as ambassadors

  1497. the message that

  1498. we have is

  1499. eternal

  1500. the message that

  1501. we hold on and

  1502. we're afraid to

  1503. share the

  1504. message that we

  1505. share with people

  1506. and they mock

  1507. us

  1508. the message

  1509. that we know

  1510. is the only

  1511. message that

  1512. people need to

  1513. have to hear

  1514. and to change

  1515. and to enter

  1516. into eternal

  1517. life that the

  1518. repercussions for

  1519. not following that

  1520. message are bad

  1521. bad

  1522. and that's why

  1523. God has us here

  1524. as his church

  1525. God has us here

  1526. as his church

  1527. as ambassadors

  1528. to this part of

  1529. Hong Kong Island

  1530. and beyond

  1531. and as we walk

  1532. every day in the

  1533. proudness and the

  1534. strength of knowing

  1535. that you're God's

  1536. ambassador and that

  1537. you have the only

  1538. thing that people have

  1539. and need to change

  1540. your life his word

1541. and that you have the

  1542. ability to step into

  1543. people's lives that are

1544. out of control and to

1545. serve them and to take

1546. care of them and to

1547. help them and to heal

1548. them and to tell them

1549. that the kingdom of God

  1550. is near

1551. and Jesus says if you do

  1552. that God does

  1553. everything else

  1554. God opens eyes

  1555. God opens ears

  1556. God changes hearts

  1557. not our words

  1558. last year when we

  1559. started off we brought

  1560. this stretcher out when

1561. we were talking about the

1562. story of the men being

1563. brought to Jesus to be

1564. healed and we had a

  1565. challenge and we wrote

1566. down all the names of

1567. people up here that we

1568. felt like needed to know

  1569. about Christ people that

1570. were in our world that

  1571. didn't know God people

1572. that we were praying for

1573. and we wrote these names

  1574. down there and this

  1575. stretcher basically has

1576. stayed in our storeroom for

1577. six months to a year

1578. when it came time to find

  1579. this stretcher and to

1580. bring it out as an object

1581. lesson and to use it we

  1582. couldn't find it

1583. last night we were texting

1584. where is that thing we

1585. didn't know where it was

1586. it's easy to get distracted

  1587. isn't it

1588. it's easy to forget about the

1589. names we put on there

1590. it's easy to forget about

1591. the people that we walk

1592. and we touch and move and

  1593. rub shoulders with them

1594. wherever we are it's easy

1595. to forget that they they

1596. need the message that we

1597. have it's easy to forget

  1598. that we're ambassadors

  1599. who's praying for the

  1600. harvest

1601. what I would like to do is

1602. ask Katie to come up with

1603. the worship team and we're

1604. just going to have a couple

  1605. minutes of reflection

1606. want you to pray about the

  1607. message you heard

1608. we're going to ask Charles

1609. and Josh they're going to

1610. hold this banner right here

1611. and what we would like to

1612. do is we want to continue

  1613. this

1614. and as you pray and as you

1615. think and as you think of

1616. the harvest and people that

1617. you pray for we have

  1618. markers here

1619. and we would like for you to

  1620. come up

1621. and we would like for you to

1622. write these people's names on

  1623. it

  1624. as a testimony

  1625. that you're an ambassador

1626. and God has sent you to

  1627. these people

1628. and we're going to pray for

  1629. them

  1630. this year

1631. the Lord of the harvest

1632. would send people into their

  1633. lives maybe us

  1634. who meet their needs

  1635. who share God's word

  1636. who encourage them where

  1637. they're at

1638. so spend a couple minutes

  1639. reflecting

1640. and then when you're ready

  1641. if you want to

  1642. you don't have to

  1643. there's somebody on your

  1644. heart

1645. we want you to come up

1646. and just write their name

  1647. down here

1648. and we'll bring this out

1649. and continue to pray for

  1650. those people

  1651. and I'll come up in a

  1652. little while

  1653. and I'll close this

  1654. to

  1655. Exactly
