  1. You guys can be seated.

  2. Welcome to Watermark.

  3. This morning, as we've been talking the last week, they did as well about serving and about kids ministry

  4. and how God is using people to serve the kids and grow the kids and teach them about Jesus and the gospel.

  5. So we're also going to kind of highlight that this morning for you guys.

  6. So I just want to invite Esther and Patney Wu up here.

  7. They're two of our volunteers, and they have been a real blessing in helping.

  8. So come on up for a little interview this morning.

  9. So thank you guys so much for serving and kids.

  10. We're really grateful for you and that you stepped out also as parents to see what's going on in the classroom with your kids.

  11. So can you guys tell me a little about your family?

  12. Okay.

  13. I'm Patney Wu, and this is my wife, Esther.

  14. And we have been married for 10 years now, soon to be.

  15. And we have two kids over there, Timothy and Nicholas.

  16. And Timothy is six, and Nicholas is four.

  17. And we've been at Watermark since it started, and we were at Ireland before that.

  18. Thank you.

  19. And why do you guys serve in Watermark Kids?

  20. Since moving to the church, we've kind of wanted to participate.

  21. And we know it was a family church.

  22. We wanted to be part of it.

  23. And we didn't really know what to do.

  24. And so when we were presented the opportunity to serve in Kids Club, we just thought maybe that's God calling us.

  25. And we know that there's a genuine need because it's always tight, the number of volunteers for Kids Club.

  26. And also we have two kids.

  27. So we really appreciate their Sunday school teachers in general.

  28. We understand that it is hard.

  29. You know, it's hard enough looking after two when they have, like, 20 there.

  30. So we just wanted to do our share.

  31. And once a month, commitment seems okay.

  32. Thank you.

  33. So what's one thing that God has been teaching you guys as you serve the kids?

  34. For me, it is to step out in faith because I felt really unequipped to do it.

  35. And I always just wanted to hide behind his back and be his lovely assistant.

  36. But I ended up finding out that there are, like, 20 running around and you kind of have to get your hands dirty.

  37. But I just felt that, you know, when you say yes, God will help you with the rest of it.

  38. And we've managed so far.

  39. We haven't lost any kids.

  40. Yeah, I think just having a servant heart and just stepping out.

  41. We all feel ill-equipped for sure.

  42. But God will always provide a way.

  43. And then what's one funny thing?

  44. Do you have any funny memories from being back there with the kids?

  45. Well, I think we teach our younger one, Nicholas.

  46. And, you know, I'm usually very goofy around with him.

  47. And so, you know, he always wants me to carry him and everything like that.

  48. So, you know, when I'm up there as a teacher and he's coming up to me and wanting to go on my shoulders and all of that kind of stuff,

  49. you know, I have to pretend that I'm a really serious guy, you know, and sit down, be quiet, you know.

  50. And so, you know, and he listens to me.

  51. And then, you know, I'm glad that he enjoys his father and mother being his teacher.

  52. And so it's kind of funny.

  53. He says, I like my mommy and daddy being my teacher.

  54. Thank you, guys.

  55. So, as we had mentioned, we really do, you know, we need some more people back there with the kids.

  56. And so many of you serve faithfully.

  57. And we're really grateful for you guys.

  58. And so we're just trying to sign on more people.

  59. And one thing, I'm really grateful for some parents.

  60. Lots of parents serve back there as well.

  61. And lots of singles too.

  62. So thank all of you.

  63. The parents have an opportunity for their kids to see them serving God and to see them back there.

  64. I was looking at some statistics that say that our kids usually work, some of us work 50 to 60 hours in an office or somewhere away from our kids.

  65. And they don't see us at work.

  66. But this is an opportunity for them to actually see you and see something that you're doing and see the way that you're actively serving God.

  67. So it's a really neat thing for you to be in the classroom too.

  68. So we just encourage you guys to sign on.

  69. And we would love to have you.

  70. So thanks.

  71. And what I've been told is as we've been expanding, we've got like over 100 kids now, we need about how many volunteers?

  72. We're looking for 20 new volunteers.

  73. That would be fantastic.

  74. During the last term, before the holidays, we averaged 80 kids per week.

  75. And that's not counting the youth that go with Eric.

  76. Okay, good.

  77. I'm going to pray for you guys and just pray for the kids' ministry.

  78. And then the kids will get dismissed and so it will become less chaotic in here.

  79. So Father, we just thank you for this day.

  80. We thank you for your goodness in our life.

  81. We thank you for the blessing that is family, whether we're singles or married or empty nesters.

  82. All of this is the family.

  83. And so we come before you and we just, we just, we're in awe of how you've brought us together from so many different backgrounds and different places.

  84. And I just thank you for Pat and Esther and just their desire to serve and to be used in gifting that maybe they might not even necessarily originally gravitate towards.

  85. But you've blessed them as they bless their kids and the kids around them.

  86. We pray for all the workers back there now, the volunteers.

  87. We know this church is all about volunteers.

  88. We pray that you would be with them, that the little kiddos going back would see your son Jesus.

  89. They would fall in love with him and they would do mighty, mighty things for your kingdom.

  90. And we thank you for all these resources that you've given us.

  91. And we're just so overwhelmed at your goodness to us.

  92. So we pray all these things, your son Jesus Christ, holy name.

  93. Amen.

  94. Good morning.

  95. Today's scripture reading comes from the gospel of Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  96. So please follow along in your bulletin.

  97. Now, as they were traveling along, he entered a village.

  98. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

  99. She had a sister called Mary who was seated at the Lord's feet, listening to his word.

  100. But Martha was distracted with all her preparations.

  101. And she came up to him and said,

  102. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone?

  103. Then tell her to help me.

  104. But the Lord answered and said to her,

  105. Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things,

  106. but only one thing is necessary.

  107. For Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

  108. This is God's word.

  109. Hey, so a crazy day today.

  110. And God continues to show us what it means to worship him.

  111. What I thought I would do, I don't know if I should do this, but I thought I'd do this.

  112. We talk about being a family here at the church.

  113. And in my family, we interact, we talk, and we discuss things.

  114. And often we do this at the end of the sermon.

  115. But we read a very powerful, well-known passage today that you guys have,

  116. some of you are probably familiar with.

  117. Some of you have heard it for the first time,

  118. and some of you have no idea what's going on,

  119. because you're just stepped into this.

  120. We're at the end of Luke chapter 10, after a year and a half here.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  121. So I just wanted to ask, as you look at the passage today,

  122. what are the questions that pop to your mind?

  123. And if you're bold enough, you can just yell them out to me.

  124. You usually do Q&A afterwards.

  125. Any questions about this passage?

  126. Kelvin.

  127. Do what?

  128. Does God encourage laziness?

  129. That's a great one.

  130. Great, great.

  131. Kelvin.

  132. What's the one thing?

  133. What's the one thing?

  134. Okay.

  135. It's kind of like the City Slickers movie one time.

  136. The guy goes, there's just one, you know, one thing.

  137. And the guy goes, your finger?

  138. And he goes, one thing.

  139. So, George, does God encourage laziness?

  140. Kelvin, what's the one thing?

  141. What else sticks out there?

  142. What does it say about women?

  143. You ever thought about that?

  144. I mean, this is actually a seminal text for women in the church.

  145. This is the text that begins all of this idea of women in the church.

  146. What other things stick out?

  147. Any other things?

  148. Do what now?

  149. Andrew?

  150. Who do you identify more with this?

  151. Are you Martha or are you Mary, right?

  152. So usually when you hear this sermon, everybody's going, okay, are you a Mary?

  153. And the Marys are usually praised.

  154. Oh, good girl, good girl.

  155. And Martha, she used to get slammed, right?

  156. You're like, you're type A.

  157. You're a loser.

  158. I don't think that's what the meaning of the passage is.

  159. I don't think that's what the meaning of the passage is.

  160. But it's been taught that way until about 100 years ago.

  161. What other questions?

  162. Any other questions?

  163. Excellent, Phyllis.

  164. Are God's values different than God's values?

  165. How do we see people?

  166. What does it look like?

  167. Okay.

  168. Well, there's no other ones you can yell out later on or at the end.

  169. I think that it's because I think I want to make sure we're on the same track as we read this passage

  170. because this passage is packed with stuff.

  171. And I'm trying not to go too long in the sermons.

  172. Well, Jeremy and Eric were not supposed to lead worship today.

  173. Katie got sick this morning at 8 o'clock, so they just found out that they were on.

  174. And so it was interesting because that's what I love about Watermark is it's organic or raw

  175. or whatever you want to call it, and everyone serves.

  176. And then I told them afterwards, I said, well, maybe I'm going to get sick.

  177. And Yvonne, you have to do the sermon.

  178. She goes, yes, I'm ready.

  179. So I'm like, well, you know, so, yeah.

  180. Don't need me.

  181. There's a lot of other people who can preach God's word, which is great.

  182. We're going to just look at this passage, and I'm going to bring out a couple things

  183. that stick out to me in this passage.

  184. And there's probably a billion other things that we need to talk about.

  185. But we're finishing up Luke chapter 10.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  186. Remember, George, to your response, what we just read last week was the tale of the Good Samaritan.

  187. And if anything, that passage said, you know, don't be lazy.

  188. I mean, he says, do it, know it, and do it.

  189. And so we come to this passage, and it kind of ends this discussion with what's going on

  190. with Jesus and his disciples.

  191. And remember we asked that the big questions were, again, how can I inherit eternal life?

  192. Who is my neighbor?

  193. Who do I need to be a neighbor to?

  194. And what do I need to do to get to heaven and be with God forever?

  195. And on back of that, you see in this passage over and over again just this idea of relationships.

  196. Relationships.

  197. It's about relationships.

  198. It's about being in a relationship with the creator of the universe.

  199. It's about being able to define your relationship.

  200. The year was 1995, November, and I was dating this beautiful girl.

  201. I mean, she was hot.

  202. And I get this phone call one day, and it says, hey, can I come over?

  203. We need to talk.

  204. So guys, you single guys, whenever your girl says, hey, I need to come over, I need to talk,

  205. it's going to be something really important.

  206. And so this girl, Christina, comes over, and she introduces me to three letters that I've never heard before.

  207. And the letters are D-T-R.

  208. Do you know what those letters stand for?

  209. D-T-R.

  210. Has anybody heard that?

  211. I had never heard those before.

  212. D-T-R.

  213. Define the relationship.

  214. Define the relationship.

  215. Okay, single guys, take notes here.

  216. Okay, because when that happens, I mean, I've never heard that before, but the dialogue usually goes something like this,

  217. for those who've never been D-T-R'd.

  218. Where are we in this relationship?

  219. Is it just for fun?

  220. Are we going somewhere?

  221. And the guy sits there and goes, yes, no, yes, Jesus, like my kids, right?

  222. You might be saying Jesus inside, right?

  223. So are we just in this for fun or are we going somewhere?

  224. And if where, if somewhere, where?

  225. Where is it?

  226. And what I've seen in this and what I've learned is that in a D-T-R, the person who has the higher need for a higher commitment level,

  227. we're going to call them the D-T-R-er.

  228. Okay, so the D-T-R-er usually comes to a person who is clueless.

  229. We can call him the dude or we can call him the D-T-R-E.

  230. Okay, and so the D-T-R-er comes to the clueless person who are,

  231. maybe they're adverse to commitment or however it is in your place,

  232. and they come in to the D-T-R-E and they say, we need to D-T-R.

  233. And usually what happens after a guy walks away from that, he just goes, I've just been D-T-R'd.

  234. And he's still trying to figure out what the heck's happening there.

  235. I love you, honey.

  236. So I just, every time I hear D-T-R, I flash back to that November 1995,

  237. and Christina and I walking around the soccer track, and I just had these hazy eyes,

  238. and I was wondering, what am I going to do with this relationship?

  239. What does this relationship mean to me?

  240. How am I going to hold this relationship?

  241. Am I going to keep this relationship?

  242. And she walked away feeling satisfied somewhat that she got her point across,

  243. and in my mind, all I could think is, I just got D-T-R'd.

  244. And that was interesting.

  245. But we're going to look at a passage today that I think is about Jesus D-T-R-ing a person.

  246. And what I realize as I come to Scripture is that the Bible is full of D-T-R-ing.

  247. And it's usually God D-T-R-ing you and me.

  248. And he's asking us, where are we in our relationship with him?

  249. Are we following him?

  250. Are we committed to him?

  251. Will we choose the one thing?

  252. Will we choose the one thing?

  253. The passage says in verse 38 that they are traveling with Jesus and his disciples.

  254. Now this is the last six months of Jesus' life.

  255. And his disciples and him are heading to Jerusalem.

  256. It's always up to Jerusalem because Jerusalem's on this mountain.

  257. And everything else below it is lower.

  258. And so his disciples and him are traveling.

  259. And they come to this city, this small little town.

  260. If you're standing in Jerusalem and you're facing north and you look east,

  261. you see this garden of trees.

  262. And it's called the Garden of Gethsemane.

  263. And right over this garden, there's this little town called Bethany.

  264. It's about a two-mile hike.

  265. Now we don't know if this is the first time that Jesus came here.

  266. It seems to be that this is the first time he ran into these two sisters.

  267. And so he's coming to this town as he's heading to Jerusalem.

  268. And whenever you think heading to Jerusalem, you always think sacrifice, the cross.

  269. He's going to be crucified for you and me.

  270. And so he enters into this town.

  271. And we read in verse 38.

  272. Now he was traveling along.

  273. He entered into a village.

  274. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

  275. She had a sister called Mary who was seated at the Lord's feet listening to his word.

  276. And what we realize immediately is that Martha and Mary are single women.

  277. Now this, again, this makes no sense to us reading it here now in our culture.

  278. But in Jesus' day and for the first thousand years, this would have been an amazing, an amazing passage.

  279. Because what it says is that Jesus has come into this village and he's hanging out with these single women.

  280. Now in Jesus' day, women were looked at really badly.

  281. And it's interesting because in the Old Testament, women were handled with value and they were protected.

  282. And for the most part, they were respected.

  283. I mean, some of the greatest love stories are in the Old Testament of Abraham and Sarah.

  284. And she's 80 and she can't have kids.

  285. And everybody's saying, get rid of her.

  286. And he's saying, I can't because I love her.

  287. And you see this high value and commitment for women.

  288. But something happens between Malachi and Matthew, these 400 years of darkness and silence.

  289. And what you see is that the role of women become greatly decreased.

  290. And women are treated like trash in Jesus' culture and time.

  291. Let me read through you some comments.

  292. Now these aren't mine.

  293. These are comments from rabbis in Jesus' time about women.

  294. Do not trust a woman, especially your wife.

  295. Be careful to keep all records of all supplies you issue her.

  296. Because she will probably lose some of them and sell the rest.

  297. Give, guys, don't be laughing.

  298. If you're a single guy, you should be going, that's terrible.

  299. Okay?

  300. Okay, okay.

  301. Give no property or support to her in your lifetime.

  302. Think about it after you die, but never while you're alive.

  303. These are true.

  304. Women are responsible for sin coming into the world.

  305. Be warned.

  306. They're going to cause you trouble.

  307. Don't waste your time teaching a woman.

  308. You might as well teach a dog.

  309. Daughters are a disaster.

  310. Now these were what the rabbis and the teachers of Jesus' day taught about women.

  311. And they had an incredible view of women being inferior to men in all areas.

  312. Now, I don't think we understand this today.

  313. Maybe if I were preaching or teaching to a group of Muslim women and they heard these words,

  314. they'd be going, yes, I understand.

  315. Yes, I understand.

  316. But in our culture where we're so modern and we're so, we're evolved, these passages kind of fly by us.

  317. But in Jesus' day, this was huge.

  318. It was very radical and cross-cultural.

  319. I mean, up until Jesus' time, how many rabbis do you think had women students?

  320. Zero.

  321. Zero.

  322. There was one in the second century.

  323. He tried to make his daughter because he was very gifted.

  324. His daughter was very gifted.

  325. He tried to make her a student.

  326. And the uproar was so great, he had to stop.

  327. And so women were treated poorly, poorly, poorly, worth nothing.

  328. And Jesus comes in and you read in the Gospels for the first time that women are given high position,

  329. high worth, high value.

  330. They're treated equally as men.

  331. And for the first time in Scripture, you read these things that speak out really clearly

  332. that women and men are on the same level.

  333. As Jesus goes and he teaches at least 27 times in the Gospel of Luke,

  334. he talks about men and women, women and men.

  335. Women see, men see.

  336. Women hear, men hear.

  337. Women hear, men don't do and obey.

  338. The women obey, the men don't obey.

  339. And we see over and over again that in this Scripture,

  340. Jesus had this incredibly high view of women.

  341. Do you understand that?

  342. I mean, up until that point, no one would ever teach a woman.

  343. And Jesus comes in and he's counter-cross-cultural.

  344. He destroys all the boundaries.

  345. And he does things in Scripture that we run through in our modern age,

  346. but in his time, it was astounding.

  347. It was against all culture and all tradition.

  348. We read in the Gospels that the women traveled with the men.

  349. That would have never happened.

  350. Never.

  351. We read in the Gospels that the women stayed in the same place as the men.

  352. Never happened.

  353. Never happened.

  354. We read in the Gospels that the women were the ones who were supporting the ministry.

  355. Do you know that?

  356. The guys weren't supporting the ministry.

  357. The women were.

  358. Now, if Luke wanted to make this Gospel attractive to people in his age,

  359. he would have never said that.

  360. Because the minute they read about women being proactive or involved or students,

  361. they would have just shut down.

  362. I mean, the fact that the women run to the cave and they see Jesus

  363. and they come back and they're the ones who testify that the Lord is risen,

  364. all scholars in that time would have said that would have been stupid.

  365. Because no one trusts the word of a woman.

  366. But yet, in Jesus' ministry, over and over and over, he validates these women.

  367. He breaks cultural rules and norms and he does incredible things.

  368. Do you see what's happening here?

  369. Does that make sense?

  370. So sometimes it bothers me when people say, you know,

  371. Jesus should have done this or he could have done this,

  372. but he didn't do this because culturally he didn't have the time,

  373. but if he came back, he would do it differently.

  374. He's definitely terrible.

  375. Jesus got crucified because he broke all cultural norms.

  376. So we see here that he comes to this house that's run by Mary.

  377. She's the owner of the house.

  378. She's the mistress.

  379. Her name actually means mistress.

  380. And she's there and it says,

  381. Mary who is seated at the Lord's,

  382. Martha is the mistress,

  383. and in verse 39,

  384. Mary who is seated at the Lord's feet.

  385. Now this has several meanings,

  386. but the biggest one basically says that she's a disciple of Christ.

  387. That she's chosen to follow God,

  388. and Christ has said, yes, you're my disciple.

  389. Now we only read about Mary three times in scripture,

  390. and every time we read about Mary,

  391. she's at Jesus' feet.

  392. She's at Jesus' feet listening to his word.

  393. She's at Jesus' feet when her brother Lazarus dies.

  394. She's at Jesus' feet wiping his feet with her hair,

  395. preparing him for burial.

  396. Every time we read about Martha, she's serving.

  397. She's serving.

  398. She's doing.

  399. She's a doer.

  400. She's a doer.

  401. She's a bee.

  402. She's always doing things.

  403. She's using her gifts and her talents.

  404. But Mary does something incredibly cross-cultural here,

  405. and she sits at Jesus' feet,

  406. and it doesn't really talk about her physical location,

  407. but it talks about what she does.

  408. Verse 40.

  409. Martha was distracted with all her preparations

  410. since she came up to him.

  411. Now, and the word here, it's a very interesting word.

  412. The word distracted basically means to lose focus.

  413. So Martha invites Jesus in.

  414. There's this huge party in her house,

  415. and she becomes distracted.

  416. The Greek word actually means to be pulled away,

  417. to lost in the fog.

  418. And so she's busy doing, and she gets lost.

  419. Now, to be distracted means that you have to be distracted

  420. from something to something.

  421. Right?

  422. Follow my logic here.

  423. And so here she's distracted from Jesus in his teaching

  424. to cooking, to doing.

  425. And so she says there,

  426. I'm trying to serve.

  427. I'm distracted.

  428. Why isn't anybody helping me?

  429. Why won't anybody listen?

  430. She can't listen.

  431. She goes up to Jesus, and she says,

  432. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me

  433. to do all the serving alone?

  434. Tell her to help me.

  435. Now, in the culture, what would have been happening

  436. is some very interesting things.

  437. On one level, Martha would be bothered

  438. because there's a huge party,

  439. and it was a very awkward setting too.

  440. Jesus is teaching, and he's there,

  441. and he's talking to his disciples,

  442. and the scripture says that Martha just comes up

  443. in front of everybody and says,

  444. don't you care that I'm doing all this work?

  445. Why are you letting my sister Mary stay here?

  446. Why don't you tell her to come help me?

  447. I need help in front of everybody.

  448. Can you imagine a party like that?

  449. And so Martha comes up, and she's frustrated,

  450. but what we don't understand culturally

  451. is there's some other things going on there.

  452. Not only is she frustrated

  453. because she's the only one doing it,

  454. but in Jesus' day,

  455. what she would have been saying

  456. would be something like this.

  457. I'm so upset.

  458. My sister is sitting there with the men.

  459. Doesn't my sister know that only men

  460. are disciples and the teachers?

  461. How can my sister be doing that?

  462. I mean, if other people in the village

  463. and the rabbis see my sister

  464. sitting at the foot of a teacher,

  465. disgrace.

  466. I mean, if Jesus leaves

  467. and we're left all by ourselves,

  468. what's going to happen?

  469. Are they going to come in

  470. and drag us out and stone us

  471. because she was acting improperly?

  472. Because she's a single woman,

  473. she shouldn't be hanging around guys.

  474. What is my sister doing

  475. hanging out with a man

  476. everyone knows that women

  477. shouldn't be taught,

  478. only men do?

  479. Disgrace.

  480. How am I going to stand up to my family

  481. when they look at us from now on

  482. and they go,

  483. Mary, just can't keep in a role,

  484. can she?

  485. What's going to happen?

  486. Is anybody going to,

  487. is anybody going to marry us?

  488. Because she's acting improperly

  489. and this just can't happen.

  490. It's so disgraceful.

  491. Look at the verse again in 40.

  492. Who does she blame

  493. for the actions of her sister?

  494. Who's she blaming?

  495. God.

  496. Do you see that?

  497. She's saying, God,

  498. how come you're allowing my sister

  499. to do this?

  500. In Alabama languages,

  501. say, hey dude,

  502. get your act together.

  503. Tell my sister to come help me.

  504. And so she's blaming God

  505. in the middle of this stuff

  506. because she's all by herself

  507. and she can't do it.

  508. Verse 41.

  509. But the Lord answered

  510. and he said to her,

  511. now whenever Jesus uses

  512. people's names twice,

  513. you need to really pay attention.

  514. Because when he uses

  515. people's names twice,

  516. it's something that we need

  517. to hear and learn from.

  518. And he says this,

  519. Martha, Martha,

  520. you are so worried

  521. and bothered about so many things.

  522. In Greek there is the words

  523. anxious, overwhelmed,

  524. overcome by so many things.

  525. Now what we didn't talk about

  526. in verse 40 is this.

  527. What was Martha busy doing?

  528. What's it saying?

  529. Preparations.

  530. She was preparing

  531. for this big meal.

  532. You know in Greek

  533. what that word preparation means?

  534. It means ministry

  535. and serving.

  536. It's the same word we get

  537. deacons and deaconesses from,

  538. diakoni.

  539. And so what he's saying here

  540. is that you're so busy serving,

  541. you're so busy using

  542. your spiritual gifts.

  543. you're so busy doing

  544. all these things

  545. that we need to be doing.

  546. You've missed me.

  547. You've missed me.

  548. Jesus says to her,

  549. Martha, Martha,

  550. you are so worried

  551. about all the ministry things

  552. that you're doing

  553. and all the ways

  554. that you're serving.

  555. and you're so consumed

  556. by all these many,

  557. many things.

  558. In Greek,

  559. you can just circle things

  560. and write beside it stuff.

  561. Stuff.

  562. Verse 42,

  563. he tells her,

  564. but only one thing

  565. is necessary

  566. for Mary has chosen

  567. the good part

  568. which shall not be

  569. taken away from her.

  570. In necessary,

  571. that word actually means essential,

  572. that there's only one thing

  573. that we've called to do.

  574. And he says that Mary

  575. has called

  576. and chosen the good part.

  577. Again,

  578. that's a very interesting word.

  579. There's a play in words

  580. going on here.

  581. She's serving a banquet.

  582. She's getting all these meals ready.

  583. She wants to feed Jesus

  584. this incredible banquet.

  585. She wants to just

  586. woe it out,

  587. be excellent

  588. in everything that she's doing.

  589. And Jesus looks at her

  590. and says,

  591. Mary

  592. has chosen

  593. the better dish.

  594. In Greek,

  595. that's what it says.

  596. You're cooking

  597. all these dishes.

  598. you're preparing

  599. this large meal

  600. but Mary has chosen

  601. the better one.

  602. Me.

  603. Martha,

  604. I didn't come here

  605. to have you make

  606. this huge meal for me.

  607. Martha,

  608. I just came here

  609. to be with you.

  610. Martha,

  611. I really appreciate

  612. that you're using your gifts

  613. and you're serving

  614. and you're doing

  615. all these incredible things.

  616. But you're distracted.

  617. You're distracted.

  618. You're walking around

  619. in a haze

  620. and you've missed me.

  621. Anybody ever felt

  622. that way before?

  623. That you're doing

  624. and you're doing

  625. and you're doing

  626. and you miss Christ?

  627. You've become so busy

  628. doing great things

  629. and ministry things

  630. and Jesus is sitting

  631. right beside you

  632. and he's saying,

  633. hey,

  634. I want to meet with you.

  635. I want to talk to you.

  636. I want to listen to you.

  637. I want you to read my word.

  638. I want to be with you.

  639. And you look at him

  640. and you say,

  641. no,

  642. I just don't have time

  643. to do that right now

  644. because I'm too busy.

  645. I'm doing important things

  646. and good things

  647. and things that I know

  648. you want me to do.

  649. There's a couple things

  650. that stick out here

  651. and then we're going to end.

  652. Things that kind of

  653. have been haunting me

  654. these last couple weeks

  655. as I keep going back

  656. and back to this passage.

  657. The first thing

  658. that sticks out

  659. in this whole,

  660. these six verses

  661. is this.

  662. I mean,

  663. the scripture is amazing.

  664. It's kind of like an onion.

  665. I think the Bible

  666. is like an onion.

  667. You cut it off

  668. at one level

  669. and you see these lines

  670. and you go,

  671. oh,

  672. that's really cool.

  673. But the deeper you get,

  674. usually what happens

  675. is the more you cry

  676. because you see your life

  677. in the deep part

  678. of the onion.

  679. But you see

  680. these deeper messages

  681. that Jesus wants

  682. to teach us.

  683. And for me,

  684. this week,

  685. as I looked at this passage,

  686. what I keep hearing

  687. and coming back to

  688. is that the essence

  689. of discipleship,

  690. the essence of being

  691. a disciple,

  692. when you look at Martha

  693. and Mary's lives,

  694. it's not in service.

  695. It's not in finding meaning

  696. in the things that I do.

  697. It's not in finding meaning

  698. in the things that I give.

  699. It's not in finding meaning

  700. and even in using

  701. my spiritual gifts.

  702. But what Jesus says here

  703. is that the essence

  704. of discipleship,

  705. the essence of being

  706. with Him

  707. is just finding Christ.

  708. and being with Him.

  709. I mean,

  710. look at this passage.

  711. Can you imagine

  712. it's nothing

  713. more worse

  714. than serving God

  715. and feeling like

  716. you're doing exactly

  717. what God wants you to do,

  718. but in that process

  719. you miss God.

  720. Have you ever had

  721. that happen to you?

  722. There's so many things

  723. you have to do

  724. and prepare at work

  725. or whatever you're doing.

  726. You're serving God

  727. at your work

  728. or wherever God has you.

  729. And you have all these

  730. things you're doing

  731. and you're preparing

  732. and you're trying

  733. to do all these things

  734. excellently.

  735. And then you start going,

  736. man,

  737. when was the last time

  738. I prayed?

  739. When was the last time

  740. I read my Bible?

  741. When was the last time

  742. I spent time

  743. with other believers?

  744. And what this passage

  745. has been telling me

  746. is that there's a big difference

  747. between being close to God

  748. and being intimate to Him.

  749. And often in our lives

  750. we struggle with serving

  751. and doing things

  752. that we feel like

  753. God wants us to do.

  754. But we miss God.

  755. I mean,

  756. I don't think this passage

  757. is about Martha is better

  758. or Mary is better.

  759. I don't think

  760. it's about that at all.

  761. But what He's trying

  762. to tell us

  763. is that whatever you do,

  764. whatever your mission is,

  765. wherever I have you

  766. serving at the bank

  767. and the law firm

  768. as a teacher

  769. in ministry,

  770. whatever I have you doing,

  771. make sure that I'm there.

  772. I'm there.

  773. I'm right beside you.

  774. I'm talking to you.

  775. Are you going to listen to me?

  776. Martha was distracted.

  777. She thought she was doing

  778. the most important thing.

  779. She thought she was

  780. serving the Lord,

  781. using her gifts,

  782. doing an incredible meal.

  783. And she did all these things

  784. excellently.

  785. And I always struggle with it

  786. because you never read

  787. in the passage

  788. where someone said,

  789. we want you to do this

  790. for Jesus.

  791. We want you to develop

  792. a great meal,

  793. make your house perfect.

  794. We want to have everything

  795. just exactly the way

  796. it should be.

  797. And then when Jesus comes,

  798. He's going to eat that meal.

  799. You never read that

  800. in the passage.

  801. And in fact,

  802. by Jesus' response,

  803. you see that that's not

  804. even what He wants at all.

  805. Jesus wants her.

  806. He wants her to be with Him

  807. and to spend time with Him.

  808. And sometimes I think

  809. that we forget that

  810. because we're so busy

  811. doing things

  812. and feeling like we're serving.

  813. And it happens a lot

  814. in ministry.

  815. We try to do things

  816. correctly and perfectly

  817. and we miss Jesus.

  818. The next thing that comes out

  819. in this passage

  820. and I have been learning

  821. is that it's very easy

  822. to get distracted

  823. in this world.

  824. I mean,

  825. it's really easy

  826. to get distracted,

  827. isn't it?

  828. I was reading this book

  829. and it was basically

  830. the tyranny of the urgent

  831. Charles Hummel.

  832. Charles Hummel says this

  833. in his book

  834. and it's very interesting.

  835. He says,

  836. we get distracted

  837. not just by

  838. performing wrong tasks

  839. but mostly

  840. by trying to cram

  841. too many of the right things

  842. into a small period of time.

  843. When we do this,

  844. we become critical

  845. in our spirits.

  846. We begin to condemn others

  847. and we blame others.

  848. Look at Martha in verse 40.

  849. You look at this passage,

  850. she yells out,

  851. don't you care?

  852. And I think it's

  853. this huge warning for us.

  854. You see that she's self-pity.

  855. You see that she's angry

  856. with other people.

  857. You see that she's finding fault

  858. with everything that's going on.

  859. You see that she eventually

  860. ends up blaming God.

  861. And the passage says

  862. that she's distracted.

  863. She's so distracted

  864. that she just can't listen to God

  865. and she doesn't know

  866. what he's saying.

  867. Have you ever had that

  868. happen in your life?

  869. That you have so many things

  870. to do in this small period of time,

  871. you gotta cram them all in.

  872. They're all really good things.

  873. And then as you do them,

  874. you just get more angry

  875. and frustrated

  876. and angry and frustrated

  877. because you don't feel

  878. like you have time.

  879. And you start blaming

  880. other people

  881. and you start complaining

  882. and you start blaming God

  883. for bringing all these things

  884. into your life.

  885. God, why did you have to

  886. plant a church right beside us?

  887. Because now I need to come

  888. and do all these things.

  889. I'm not gonna be rested

  890. until I get them done.

  891. Lord, how come I signed up

  892. for this ministry

  893. because it's involved

  894. so many things.

  895. I just don't have time

  896. to do all the things

  897. I need to do

  898. and do it well.

  899. For me,

  900. as I read through this passage,

  901. there's a couple things

  902. I ask myself often.

  903. One question is this.

  904. Am I getting more discouraged

  905. these days

  906. than I was before?

  907. Am I worried

  908. about what other people

  909. are doing

  910. instead of what I'm doing?

  911. Do I get more angry

  912. more easily?

  913. Am I more easily angered

  914. as I walk through my day?

  915. Do I blame God

  916. for things

  917. in my life?

  918. And the passage says

  919. that if you answer yes

  920. to any of those,

  921. you're distracted

  922. and you've lost focus.

  923. I'm learning more and more

  924. that there's a big difference

  925. between being close to God

  926. and having a relationship

  927. with God.

  928. After 25 years of ministry,

  929. 25 years of seeing people do

  930. and me do,

  931. sometimes doing

  932. isn't a great excuse

  933. for not being close to God.

  934. sometimes being close to God

  935. is easier

  936. than being intimate with God.

  937. I mean,

  938. it's much easier for me

  939. to go to five Bible studies

  940. this week

  941. instead of sit down

  942. and be quiet,

  943. open God's word

  944. and ask Him

  945. how I'm doing.

  946. because if I'm quiet

  947. and I ask Him

  948. how I'm doing,

  949. I might hear that voice

  950. that says,

  951. dude,

  952. you're not doing

  953. very good at all.

  954. But if I don't spend that time,

  955. I just go to BSF

  956. and I do all these

  957. other great things.

  958. Whatever it is,

  959. as a young Christian,

  960. I was just so stressed out

  961. because I figured

  962. that as I walked with God,

  963. I could do 10 great things

  964. every week in my church.

  965. 10 great things.

  966. I mean,

  967. they were all amazing.

  968. Great teachers.

  969. They were going to help me.

  970. But what I realized

  971. is I tried to cram

  972. all those things in

  973. that I never ended up

  974. meeting Christ.

  975. I lost my focus.

  976. I forgot why I was doing things.

  977. It's really easy

  978. to get distracted in this world

  979. and as you look at Martha,

  980. you see a little bit of us

  981. in her

  982. if we're honest.

  983. One of the things

  984. I've been learning

  985. is as I go through my day,

  986. I kind of just do things like this.

  987. I go and I pray

  988. and I say,

  989. God,

  990. would you be here right now?

  991. God,

  992. I'm about to go into

  993. this business meeting

  994. and it's going to be

  995. very difficult.

  996. Will you be with me?

  997. Will you speak to me

  998. as I go and talk

  999. to these partners?

  1000. As I'm filling out

  1001. this spreadsheet,

1002. it's so easy for me

  1003. to lose focus

1004. on why you have me here

1005. and what you have me doing.

1006. Will you be with me?

  1007. I need you.

  1008. The passage says

  1009. that Jesus came

  1010. to be with her

  1011. but Martha was so

  1012. distracted

  1013. by great things

  1014. that she missed Christ.

  1015. Now we know

  1016. that it's not true

  1017. later in her life.

  1018. Later in her life,

  1019. she comes

1020. and she does amazing things

  1021. and she says

  1022. when she comes

  1023. to Jesus

  1024. and Lazarus is dead,

  1025. she goes,

  1026. Lord,

1027. if you had been here,

  1028. he would be alive

1029. because you are the Lord.

  1030. You're the God.

  1031. You're the creator

  1032. of everything.

  1033. And Jesus goes,

  1034. do you believe

  1035. he's going to live?

  1036. Yeah,

  1037. I know he's going to live.

1038. You're going to make him

  1039. live in a resurrection.

  1040. Jesus goes,

  1041. no, no, no.

  1042. Do you believe

1043. he's going to live now?

  1044. So you know

1045. that Martha got it right

1046. later on in her life

  1047. but now she struggles

  1048. with being distracted

  1049. and she doesn't know

  1050. finally the last thing

  1051. that keeps coming back

  1052. into me

1053. as I keep reading this

  1054. is verse 39.

  1055. She had a sister

  1056. called Mary

  1057. who was seated

  1058. at the Lord's seat

  1059. listening to his word.

  1060. Now Jesus' day,

  1061. disciples followed

  1062. their rabbis everywhere.

  1063. There's amazing stories

  1064. you can read

  1065. about disciples

  1066. following their rabbis

  1067. into the bathroom

  1068. because they're afraid

1069. the rabbi's going to say

1070. something they need to hear

  1071. and they're going to

1072. need to write it down

  1073. because all the word

  1074. is valuable.

  1075. There's amazing stories

  1076. about rabbis

1077. going to bed at night

  1078. and they're feeling

1079. a bump underneath their bed

  1080. and there's disciples there

  1081. and their disciples

  1082. are writing out

  1083. everything that the rabbi

  1084. is saying

  1085. because they just want

  1086. to be so close

  1087. to the rabbi

1088. and they want to know

  1089. his words,

1090. they want to learn from him

  1091. because it's law

  1092. and it's life

  1093. and it's everything.

  1094. There's a story

  1095. of how these disciples

  1096. follow the rabbi

  1097. so closely

  1098. as he's walking

  1099. down the dusty roads

  1100. because their goal

1101. is to get the dust

  1102. of the rabbi

  1103. covering them

  1104. and they feel like

1105. if they get the dust

  1106. of the rabbi

  1107. covering them

  1108. that they're so close

  1109. that they're not

  1110. going to miss anything

  1111. but they're intimate

  1112. and they know him

  1113. and I think about

  1114. this passage

  1115. when it says

1116. Mary sat at his feet

  1117. because she knew

  1118. who he was

  1119. and I wonder

1120. for us as a church

  1121. what that would look

  1122. like today.

  1123. As you left

  1124. some of you

  1125. to hang out

  1126. some of you

  1127. to eat food

  1128. some of you

  1129. to grab your kids

  1130. and go off

  1131. if the last thing

  1132. I said to you

  1133. is hey make sure

1134. you sit by the feet

  1135. of your rabbi

  1136. today

  1137. what would that

  1138. mean to you?

  1139. I said hey

  1140. make sure

  1141. as you go out

  1142. that you get covered

  1143. by the dust

  1144. of your rabbi

  1145. because he has

  1146. a lot of things

1147. to share with you today

  1148. he really wants

  1149. to talk to you.

  1150. What would that

  1151. look like

  1152. for you?

  1153. It might mean

  1154. it's the beginning

  1155. of your day

  1156. you open your bible

  1157. and you read it

  1158. for ten minutes.

  1159. Start in the gospels

  1160. don't start at revelation.

  1161. It might mean

  1162. that you start praying

  1163. little sentence prayers

  1164. as you go in

  1165. and do things.

  1166. It might mean

  1167. you say

  1168. Lord Jesus

  1169. I really need you

  1170. right now.

  1171. Will you be here

  1172. with me?

  1173. Whatever it looks

  1174. like for you

1175. you need to do it.

  1176. The church

  1177. in Ephesus

  1178. chapter four

  1179. is the first church

  1180. that Jesus talked about

  1181. and in it

  1182. he talks about

  1183. the Ephesian church

  1184. and he says

  1185. this is thirty years

  1186. after he wrote

  1187. the book of Ephesians

  1188. he said

  1189. you guys

  1190. are studs

  1191. you

  1192. you

  1193. you

  1194. you

  1195. you know the word

  1196. you're making sure

  1197. your teachers

  1198. are correct

  1199. you're rebuking

  1200. false prophets

  1201. you're

  1202. you're preaching

  1203. the word

  1204. but I have this

  1205. one thing

  1206. against you

  1207. you've lost

  1208. your first love

  1209. in the midst

  1210. of doing all

  1211. the right things

  1212. and being engaged

  1213. wherever God

  1214. has you

  1215. this week

  1216. the most important

  1217. thing that God

  1218. wants from every

1219. one of us in here

1220. is for us to spend

  1221. time with him

1222. to listen to his word

  1223. to pray

  1224. to ask him

  1225. to come into

  1226. whatever you're

  1227. doing

  1228. that's the one

  1229. thing

  1230. what is the

  1231. greater dish

  1232. time with Christ

  1233. what is the

  1234. one thing

  1235. the rabbi

  1236. who sits beside

  1237. you

  1238. as you walk

  1239. through the day

  1240. wanting to talk

  1241. to you

  1242. and the question

  1243. is

  1244. will you do

  1245. it

  1246. so let me ask

  1247. you a question

  1248. how's your

  1249. DTR

  1250. if Christ

  1251. came to you

  1252. and called you

  1253. up and said

  1254. hey I want to

  1255. talk to you

  1256. I need to talk

  1257. right now

  1258. and he comes

  1259. in and he says

  1260. you know

  1261. I have a

  1262. problem

  1263. DTR

  1264. he's a

  1265. DTRer

  1266. we're the

  1267. DTRE

  1268. we're going

  1269. to get

  1270. DTR'd

  1271. but he

  1272. asked us

  1273. where's this

  1274. relationship

  1275. going

  1276. do you just

  1277. come and see

  1278. me on Sunday

  1279. then you walk

  1280. away

  1281. do you just

  1282. call me up

  1283. when you need

  1284. me because

  1285. you're about

  1286. to lose

  1287. your job

  1288. and then

  1289. after you

  1290. get your

  1291. job

  1292. and everything

  1293. is great

  1294. you just

  1295. forget about

  1296. me

  1297. do you

  1298. just cry

  1299. out to me

  1300. when your

  1301. life is out

  1302. of control

  1303. and your

  1304. kids are

  1305. crazy

  1306. or do you

  1307. cry out to me

  1308. all the time

  1309. knowing that

  1310. I'm there

  1311. and I want

  1312. to be with

  1313. you

  1314. Martha and

  1315. Mary are in

  1316. every one of

  1317. us in here

  1318. sometimes we're

  1319. Martha

  1320. and sometimes

  1321. we're Mary

  1322. in the midst

  1323. of all

  1324. of this

  1325. the most

  1326. important thing

  1327. God wants

  1328. to teach

  1329. you

  1330. is that

  1331. wherever you

  1332. are

  1333. he is there

  1334. with you

  1335. that he

  1336. desires a

  1337. relationship

  1338. with you

  1339. and he

  1340. wants you to

  1341. listen to his

  1342. voice

  1343. and spend

  1344. time with

  1345. him

  1346. father we

  1347. just thank you

  1348. for this

  1349. day

  1350. we thank you

  1351. for your

  1352. word which

  1353. is living

  1354. and active

  1355. we thank you

  1356. for these

  1357. two amazing

  1358. women

  1359. we know

  1360. that you

  1361. use them

  1362. in mighty

  1363. mighty ways

  1364. throughout your

  1365. word in

  1366. scripture

  1367. they are

  1368. there with

  1369. you to

  1370. the end

  1371. because of

  1372. the lessons

  1373. you teach

  1374. them now

  1375. father let's

  1376. pray for us

  1377. as a church

  1378. and I pray

  1379. for us as

  1380. brothers and

  1381. sisters here

  1382. that we'd

  1383. understand what

  1384. you want to

  1385. teach to us

  1386. today

  1387. that we'd

  1388. fall more

  1389. in love with

  1390. you and

  1391. realize that

  1392. we are

  1393. right next

  1394. to you

  1395. that you're

  1396. right next

  1397. to us

  1398. as we go

  1399. through our

  1400. day

  1401. and the

  1402. most important

  1403. thing that

  1404. you want

  1405. for us

  1406. the one

  1407. thing

  1408. is that you

  1409. want us to

  1410. be in

  1411. relationship

  1412. with you

  1413. father help us

  1414. not as a church

  1415. to be doing

  1416. doing doing

  1417. and all these

  1418. great things

  1419. that we think

  1420. are of your

  1421. kingdom

  1422. and we end

  1423. up missing

  1424. what you want

  1425. us to do

  1426. but help us

  1427. as a church

  1428. and as your

  1429. people

  1430. to listen

  1431. to you

  1432. to follow

  1433. you

  1434. to serve

  1435. with your

  1436. hands

  1437. and with

  1438. your words

  1439. to reach out

  1440. into the

  1441. darkest part

  1442. of Hong Kong

  1443. where 95%

  1444. of the people

  1445. if they were

  1446. to die

  1447. right now

  1448. they would

  1449. be separated

  1450. from you

  1451. for eternity

  1452. father we

  1453. want to be a

  1454. church that

  1455. that bothers

  1456. us

  1457. father we

  1458. want to be a

  1459. church that

  1460. that bothers

  1461. us

  1462. father we

  1463. love you

  1464. and we

  1465. pray all

  1466. these things

  1467. in your

  1468. son Jesus

  1469. name

  1470. amen
