  1. Well, good morning, Watermark. Good morning. Well, before I begin, let me start by saying

  2. that today's a very special day. It's my beautiful wife, Patricia's birthday. Thank you.

  3. She is not in the room. So when you see her later, please run up to her, give her a hug.

  4. That'll scare her and tell her happy birthday. Because the bigger deal you make out of her

  5. birthday, the more money I save. So please make it a big deal. My birthday, however, was two weeks ago.

  6. I turned 33. I also shaved, so it looked like I turned 12. But it's funny, at 33, I didn't expect

  7. to be as far along in life as I've gotten. I always said when I was single and when I was younger

  8. that I would follow in the footsteps of Jesus and not get married until I was 33. Some of you look

  9. confused. I said that to someone and they said, well, Jesus didn't get married. And I said, no,

  10. but he gave up his life at 33. Okay. My wife just walked in the room, so forget what I just said.

  11. But it's amazing, though. We found out that we have two children and we have another one on the way.

  12. And most likely, 80%, the doctor says, it's a girl. I don't know what 80% it's a girl means,

  13. but with a high likelihood, it's a girl, which I was scared when I found out that we had another child

  14. in the way. But now that I found out that it's a girl, I'm terrified. But it's amazing, as I think

  15. about my life, as I think about how much responsibility I now have in my hands, it really

  16. makes me consider what God has given me. That God has made me a steward of so many things. He's made me

  17. a steward of my home. He's made me a steward of my marriage. He's made me a steward of my family,

  18. of my children. That he has entrusted me with something that's not mine, but it belongs to him.

  19. He's entrusted me with a life that one day he'll take back. What we do in the short time that we have,

  20. matters. We're starting a new series called Stewardship, Stewardship Making This One Life Count.

  21. And I'm excited as we look through the things that matter, the things that help us know that

  22. what we do in our short years matters, not just in this life, but matters for eternity.

  23. And today I have the privilege and the great responsibility, the pressure even,

  24. to take us through the topic this morning, stewardship in God's Word, which is something

  25. that's very dear to my heart. And I say that it scares me because the weight of this is so heavy

  26. on my heart. Because if we don't get this right, then everything that we talk about after this won't

  27. matter. If we don't get this right, we won't get anything else right. Because everything else hinges

  28. on this. Let's pray. Father God, we come to you this morning. And God, I pray that you would speak to us

  29. through your Word, that you would teach us. Open our eyes to see your majesty.

  30. that our lives would be changed, that we wouldn't just have a head knowledge this morning,

  31. but that you would change our hearts, that we would walk out of here differently because we've

  32. experienced you. In Jesus' name, pray. Amen. In Deuteronomy 6, 6 through 9, it says, this is also in your

  33. notes, in your bulletin, and these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.

  34. You shall teach them diligently to your children. You shall talk of them when you sit in your house,

  35. and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise, you shall bind them as a sign

  36. on your head. They shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorpost of

  37. your house, and on your gates. Here, God is telling his children. He's telling a people that he's

  38. gathered to himself. He's just given them his Word, and he says, listen, what I have given you is serious.

  39. What I have given you should not just be some flippant thing that you hear today, and you throw it out

  40. tomorrow. This needs to get into your heart, that you need to meditate on this, that you need to talk

  41. about it, not just on Sundays, and listen to a good message, but you need to talk about this all the

  42. time. You need to digest this. You need to talk about it when you're standing, when you're sitting,

  43. when you're in your house, when you're on the way. And then he says something strange. He says,

  44. you're going to tie it on your forehead, tie it on your hand as a reminder. Put it on your doorpost.

  45. Put it on your gate so that you will look different. You're going to look weird, I tell you.

  46. Please don't be so literal as to put this up here this week, or tie it here, but it will change how

  47. you look. It will change you. God is telling us that we need to be passionate for his Word.

  48. There's a name that I believe that every believer needs to know. Every Christian should know this

  49. name. It's the name William Tyndale. Have you ever heard this name? Most of us have never heard of

  50. William Tyndale. But William Tyndale lived in the 1400s and the 1500s in England. He was a very smart

  51. man. He graduated from Oxford and from Cambridge. He spoke seven languages. I struggle with English.

  52. Okay, seven languages. He was fluent. He studied Greek, the ancient Greek and the ancient Hebrew.

  53. William Tyndale had a passion. He had a passion to take God's Word, which at that time was only allowed

  54. to be written in Latin and only read in Latin. And he desired that every person would have the ability

  55. to read it in English. Every person in England would be able to read it in their own language.

  56. It was against the law. But William Tyndale was convinced of the power of God's Word. So what he did

  57. is he went and he translated the New Testament from Greek into English. And from far away he published it

  58. and it was smuggled into England and people started reading it. And it was so infuriated the king that anyone

  59. found with the Bible would be killed. They would be tried for treason. William Tyndale writes this,

  60. and forgive me, it's in old English. Let it not make thee despair, neither yet discourage thee, O reader,

  61. that it is forbidden thee in pain of life and goods, or that it is made breaking of the king's peace or treason

  62. unto his highness to read the word of thy soul's health. For if God be on our side, what matter make it

  63. who be against us, be they bishops, cardinals, popes. You hear what he said? He's writing to a people

  64. who are so hungry for God's Word and he says, don't despair. Don't be afraid, even though this could cost you

  65. your life. There is something greater that can't be taken away from you. Imagine that in our world today

  66. where we have Bibles all over the place, where you can have a Bible on your phone, where you can have a

  67. Bible on your iPad, you can have a Bible on your Android, when you can have a Bible on your shelf,

  68. a Bible in your car, you can have Bibles anywhere, 24 hours a day, anytime you want them in any language,

  69. that you can dream of almost any language that you can imagine. But he said, don't worry, it may cost you life,

  70. but it's worth it. William Tyndale lived that out. He was caught and tried.

  71. And on October 6, 1536, he was tied to a stake. And they wrapped a rope and a chain around his neck

  72. and they choked him. And then they set him on fire. Before they did that, a historian recorded that

  73. his prayer was, Lord, open the King of England's eyes. You see, this was a crazy idea. This was a

  74. dangerous idea that if people could just read the Word of God in their own language, it would change

  75. their lives. I once visited a village in northern China. And this village, it was a village of 1,000

  76. people, very small village. And there were 600 believers in this village. They had weathered

  77. through some tremendous things during the Cultural Revolution in China. And I went to meet with some

  78. of the brothers and sisters in the church and they met in a one-room mud hut that had one light bulb

  79. in the middle. Imagine this morning if we were all huddled into a one-room mud hut with a light bulb.

  80. And they shared with me that during the Cultural Revolution, the whole village had one Bible.

  81. And they treasured that Bible. What they would do is that they would take pages from that Bible when

  82. they would come together and they would pass them around. They would take those pages home and they

  83. would memorize them. They would talk to their children about them. They would, in their homes,

  84. they would devour the Word of God. And then when they would come back together, they would talk about

  85. what the Scripture taught them. Can you imagine if we didn't have one Bible amongst all of us?

  86. And all we could do is take a page home and memorize it. You see, they valued the Word of God because they

  87. knew what the Word of God was. They knew that the Word of God was precious. They knew it was powerful.

  88. It had the power to change people's lives, to transform people. They knew it was useful. They knew that the

  89. Bible, though written thousands of years ago, was relevant and current to today.

  90. And more important, they knew that the Word of God was a treasure. And the Word of God is a trust.

  91. The Bible, if you want to put it in a very simple acronym, Bible, B-I-B-L-E, basic instructions before

  92. leaving earth. Isn't that cool?

  93. Well, but it is. This is our field manual. We are in a war. We're in a battle every day.

  94. You would not go to battle without knowing what's in the field manual. You would not go into battle

  95. without your weapon. This is the sword of truth.

  96. Psalm 119, 105 says,

  97. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

  98. A lamp to my feet shows that this is where I am.

  99. This is where I'm standing. It shows that

  100. if I'm on the path or I'm off the path,

  101. and it is a light to my path,

  102. that means it shows me where I'm going.

  103. I know where I am,

  104. and I know where I'm going

  105. because of God's Word.

  106. Why is it

  107. that many Christians

  108. don't read

  109. the Bible?

  110. You know, if I'm

  111. honest, and here this morning,

  112. I live in Hong Kong.

  113. How many of you live in Hong Kong?

  114. Okay, yeah, some of you still aren't with me.

  115. Okay.

  116. This has been called

  117. one of the busiest cities in the world.

  118. How many of you are busy?

  119. Raise your hand if you're busy.

  120. Okay, so

  121. not as many as I had hoped.

  122. But we are busy.

  123. And one of the biggest,

  124. one of the top reasons

  125. that if you ask someone,

  126. why aren't you reading the Word?

  127. They'll say, I'm too busy.

  128. I just don't,

  129. I don't have enough time.

  130. I'm, I'm,

  131. I've got all these things

  132. to do.

  133. All these important things.

  134. I, I don't,

  135. I don't have time for it.

  136. Wow.

  137. Now wait a minute.

  138. You've got time

  139. to play word,

  140. words with friends.

  141. You've got time

  142. to find out all of your,

  143. all of your friends' Facebook posts.

  144. But you don't have time

  145. to spend even just five minutes

  146. in God's Word.

  147. It's what I call a value call.

  148. You see no value in it.

  149. And there have been times

  150. where I've lost the value

  151. of God's Word

  152. that, that I,

  153. I think that in,

  154. in that moment,

  155. something else is more important.

  156. But the reality is,

  157. it's not.

  158. Maybe it's because

  159. if we're honest,

  160. we're too lazy.

  161. I've been guilty of that.

  162. Been too lazy

  163. to even read God's Word.

  164. And then there's another one.

  165. Maybe it's because

  166. we're afraid.

  167. Afraid that what we read

  168. will cause us

  169. to have to examine our lives.

  170. That what we read

  171. will cause us to say,

  172. I know that I'm not living

  173. the way God

  174. created me to live.

  175. It might make us feel

  176. this strange feeling

  177. called guilt.

  178. It might lead us

  179. to live differently.

  180. What's the danger

  181. of not knowing God's Word?

  182. The first thing is

  183. we misuse,

  184. we can be led

  185. into misusing

  186. God's Word.

  187. There's a,

  188. Philippians 4.13

  189. is a verse that I love.

  190. It says,

  191. I can do all things

  192. through Him

  193. who gives me strength.

  194. Or I can do all things

  195. through Christ

  196. who strengthens me.

  197. When I was growing up,

  198. I was in a crowd

  199. of people

  200. that would use

  201. this verse

  202. for whatever

  203. they wanted it

  204. to,

  205. whatever they wanted

  206. in their lives

  207. at that time

  208. they would use

  209. this verse.

  210. I'm having a hard time

  211. paying my bills,

  212. but I believe

  213. God wants me

  214. to have this

  215. brand new car.

  216. I can't afford,

  217. but I'm going to

  218. sign my name

  219. on the line

  220. because I can do

  221. all things

  222. through Christ

  223. who gives me strength.

  224. There's this,

  225. there's this other thing

  226. that I want

  227. and I probably

  228. shouldn't have it,

  229. but I can do

  230. all things

  231. through Christ

  232. who gives me strength.

  233. You want that house,

  234. you want all

  235. this nice stuff,

  236. you can do all things

  237. through Christ

  238. who gives you strength.

  239. And many people

  240. use it

  241. as a means

  242. of getting

  243. all the riches

  244. of the world

  245. that they want,

  246. of saying that

  247. I'm going to look pretty,

  248. I'm going to be healthy.

  249. But you know,

  250. Paul is writing this

  251. and you know

  252. what he says

  253. right before this?

  254. When you don't know

  255. all of God's word,

  256. when you're not

  257. a good steward

  258. of God's word,

  259. you don't know

  260. that before this

  261. he's saying,

  262. I know what it is

  263. to be in plenty

  264. and I know what it is

  265. to be in want,

  266. but I've learned

  267. the secret

  268. of being content

  269. in all circumstances.

  270. If you're not

  271. a good steward

  272. of God's word,

  273. you can be led

  274. to misuse it.

  275. Jeremiah 29 11,

  276. again,

  277. one of my favorite verses.

  278. We talked about this verse

  279. in your community groups

  280. this week.

  281. Do you all remember that?

  282. This past week,

  283. Jeremiah 29 11,

  284. for I know the plans

  285. I have for you,

  286. declares the Lord,

  287. plans to prosper you

  288. and not to harm you,

  289. to give you a hope

  290. and a future.

  291. To those that misuse

  292. God's word,

  293. to those that are not

  294. good stewards

  295. of his word,

  296. that means

  297. whatever you want,

  298. whatever you think

  299. your life should be like,

  300. it's going to be happy

  301. because God knows

  302. the plans he has for me,

  303. plans to prosper me

  304. and not to harm me,

  305. to give me a hope

  306. and a future.

  307. And it becomes twisted

  308. in all of these things

  309. that it's never intended

  310. to be.

  311. And if you're in your

  312. community group this week,

  313. you learned

  314. that God is speaking

  315. through the prophet Jeremiah

  316. to the people

  317. that he says,

  318. I have carried you

  319. into exile.

  320. This is an uncomfortable place

  321. for the children of Israel,

  322. for the Israelites.

  323. This is a very uncomfortable place.

  324. It's not what they had expected.

  325. This is a terrible thing

  326. that's happened to them,

  327. but God says,

  328. hey, this is uncomfortable.

  329. Your false prophet said

  330. that you're going to be

  331. out of this in a few years.

  332. This is going to be

  333. a long time.

  334. It's going to be 70 years.

  335. But listen to this.

  336. Even though it's uncomfortable,

  337. I know the plans I have

  338. for you,

  339. declares the Lord.

  340. Plans to prosper you,

  341. not to harm you,

  342. to give you a hope

  343. and a future.

  344. To those that misuse it,

  345. they say nothing

  346. will ever happen

  347. that you don't want

  348. to happen.

  349. But the full counsel

  350. of God's word says

  351. that he's going to take us

  352. through even the storms

  353. of our lives

  354. for a reason.

  355. False teaching.

  356. Ephesians 4, 14

  357. says that,

  358. so that we may

  359. no longer be children

  360. tossed to and fro

  361. by the waves

  362. and carried about

  363. by every wind of doctrine,

  364. by human cunning,

  365. by craftiness

  366. and deceitful schemes.

  367. When you hear things like

  368. there are many ways

  369. to God,

  370. then you can automatically

  371. say,

  372. no, wait a minute.

  373. God's word,

  374. Jesus says himself,

  375. I am the way,

  376. the truth,

  377. and the life

  378. that no one comes

  379. to the Father

  380. but by me.

  381. When you hear things like

  382. as long as you're

  383. a good person,

  384. you'll go to heaven.

  385. And then,

  386. again,

  387. a good steward

  388. of God's word,

  389. it comes to your mind

  390. that,

  391. wait a minute,

  392. in Isaiah 64,

  393. it says,

  394. all of us have become

  395. like one who's unclean,

  396. that all of our righteous

  397. deeds

  398. are as filthy rags

  399. before the Lord.

  400. Or you'll say,

  401. wait a minute,

  402. for by grace

  403. you've been saved

  404. through faith

  405. and this not of your own doing.

  406. It is the gift of God,

  407. not a result of works,

  408. so that no one

  409. may boast.

  410. Another danger

  411. of not being a good steward

  412. of God's word

  413. is that you stop growing

  414. and you forget the things

  415. that you once knew.

  416. It's hard to believe

  417. if you look at me now,

  418. but I used to be

  419. in great shape.

  420. And I don't mean

  421. round as a shape,

  422. I'm a great shape now,

  423. it's just different.

  424. But at one point

  425. in my life,

  426. I was quite athletic.

  427. That's not the joke,

  428. you're not supposed

  429. to laugh at that part.

  430. But something happened

  431. where I stopped

  432. going to the gym

  433. as often.

  434. It happened

  435. about December 10th,

  436. 2005.

  437. I lost my motivation

  438. for working out.

  439. But something happened.

  440. I noticed

  441. within just months,

  442. if I would go back

  443. into the gym

  444. after months

  445. of not being in the gym,

  446. I could not lift

  447. the weight

  448. that I once could.

  449. And there's something

  450. that happens

  451. in our muscles,

  452. that when we are not

  453. building up our muscles,

  454. when we stop

  455. using them,

  456. there's a word

  457. that happens,

  458. it's called atrophy.

  459. It's where

  460. you not only

  461. start to become weaker,

  462. but the muscles

  463. even start to be

  464. eaten away.

  465. That happens

  466. in our lives

  467. when we are not

  468. good stewards

  469. of God's word.

  470. Here's what happens.

  471. The writers of Hebrews

  472. writes in

  473. 5.11

  474. through 14.

  475. About this,

  476. we have much

  477. to say.

  478. And it is hard

  479. to explain

  480. since you

  481. have become

  482. dull of hearing.

  483. For though

  484. by this time

  485. you ought to be

  486. teachers,

  487. you need someone

  488. to teach you again

  489. the basic principles

  490. of the oracles

  491. of God.

  492. You need milk,

  493. not solid food,

  494. for everyone

  495. who lives

  496. on milk

  497. is unskilled

  498. in the word

  499. of righteousness

  500. since he is a child.

  501. But solid food

  502. is for the mature,

  503. for those

  504. who have their

  505. powers of discernment

  506. trained

  507. by constant practice

  508. to distinguish

  509. good from evil.

  510. Do you hear

  511. what he's saying

  512. to the Hebrews?

  513. He's saying,

  514. you know,

  515. I have all this

  516. great stuff

  517. to tell you,

  518. but it's hard

  519. because you're stupid.

  520. It's hard

  521. because you're dumb.

  522. And you're dumb

  523. because you,

  524. you should be

  525. at the point

  526. where you're teaching,

  527. but instead

  528. you have to be taught

  529. those,

  530. those basic

  531. elemental things again.

  532. I was in school,

  533. I was in middle school,

  534. which is about

  535. eighth grade,

  536. with a guy

  537. who was

  538. 19 years old.

  539. Eighth grade.

  540. That means

  541. most of us

  542. are 12 and 13.

  543. He was 19 years old

  544. because he didn't

  545. pass the tests.

  546. He didn't study.

  547. He didn't even

  548. sometimes show up

  549. at school.

  550. And it was embarrassing

  551. to be the only kid

  552. in middle school

  553. with a beard.

  554. But spiritually,

  555. that's what happens

  556. to us.

  557. And he's saying,

  558. hey, wait a minute,

  559. you should be teaching,

  560. but instead

  561. you're being unproductive

  562. because you don't even

  563. know the basic things.

  564. You have not continued.

  565. You haven't been working out.

  566. Second Timothy,

  567. this is in your notes,

  568. 3, 14.

  569. What does it look like?

  570. How do we become

  571. good stewards

  572. of God's word?

  573. But as for you,

  574. continue in what you've learned.

  575. Paul is writing

  576. to Timothy.

  577. Timothy's been taught

  578. the word

  579. by his grandmother.

  580. He's been taught

  581. the word by Paul.

  582. But as for you,

  583. continue in what

  584. you have learned

  585. and have firmly believed,

  586. knowing from whom

  587. you learned it,

  588. and how from childhood

  589. you have been acquainted

  590. with the sacred writings,

  591. which are able

  592. to make you wise

  593. for salvation

  594. through faith

  595. in Christ Jesus.

  596. All scripture

  597. is breathed out

  598. by God

  599. and profitable

  600. for teaching,

  601. for reproof,

  602. for correction,

  603. for training

  604. in righteousness,

  605. that the man of God

  606. may be competent,

  607. equipped for every good work.

  608. Now, I know

  609. that's a long passage

  610. of scripture,

  611. so let's break that down

  612. for just a moment.

  613. First,

  614. but as for you,

  615. continue in what

  616. you have learned

  617. and have firmly believed.

  618. Continuity,

  619. when we are a steward

  620. of God's word,

  621. it does not mean

  622. that one time

  623. we read the Bible

  624. all the way through

  625. in a year,

  626. and then we stopped,

  627. because we know it all.

  628. It doesn't mean

  629. that if you've studied

  630. every one of the 66 books,

  631. the 39 books

  632. of the Old Testament

  633. or the 27 books

  634. in the New Testament

  635. that you've studied them,

  636. that it's finished.

  637. It's not a once-off thing

  638. that he's telling Timothy,

  639. continue in what you've learned.

  640. This keeps going

  641. throughout your whole life.

  642. And I've learned that

  643. I came to Christ

  644. when I was 13 years old,

  645. and I remember

  646. the passages

  647. that were so powerful

  648. for me when I was 13.

  649. And when I read them

  650. when I was in university,

  651. when I read them again,

  652. those same passages

  653. would teach me something

  654. completely different,

  655. something new

  656. that I didn't know before.

  657. When I was in my 20s,

  658. again, it spoke to me

  659. in a much different way.

  660. When I became a husband,

  661. very different.

  662. When you're a good steward

  663. of God's word,

  664. no matter what stage

  665. of life you're in,

  666. God's word will continue

  667. to speak to you

  668. and differently

  669. than what it did before.

  670. It will never contradict

  671. itself,

  672. but you will see

  673. something new about God.

  674. Your experience.

  675. You know,

  676. there are great ways

  677. to learn.

  678. As a believer,

  679. there are three great ways

  680. to learn.

  681. One is through

  682. your own experience.

  683. The second is through

  684. the experience of others.

  685. But these first two ways

  686. of learning as a believer

  687. are flawed.

  688. And they're flawed

  689. because there's a way

  690. that seems right

  691. into men,

  692. but in the end,

  693. is death.

  694. The third way

  695. is through the scripture

  696. because it is the lens

  697. that we see

  698. all of our experience,

  699. that we see the world

  700. around us.

  701. It changes how we

  702. see everything,

  703. how we respond

  704. to everything.

  705. Next,

  706. he says,

  707. the sacred writings

  708. which are able

  709. to make you wise

  710. for salvation

  711. through faith

  712. in Christ Jesus.

  713. The word wise,

  714. to make you wise.

  715. Wisdom.

  716. Throughout the Bible,

  717. wisdom doesn't mean

  718. teaching you

  719. how to do something

  720. or how to do

  721. one particular thing.

  722. It's not how to build

  723. a house,

  724. not how to do math,

  725. but wisdom

  726. is always

  727. about how to live

  728. a life

  729. that's pleasing to God.

  730. That's what we were

  731. created for.

  732. So we're learning

  733. how to fulfill

  734. our purpose

  735. and our destiny

  736. as humans.

  737. How are you guys doing?

  738. The next thing

  739. is very important.

  740. He's saying that

  741. all of the scripture

  742. here

  743. will give you wisdom

  744. for

  745. salvation

  746. through faith

  747. in Christ Jesus.

  748. That all of the Bible

  749. is not

  750. separate stories

  751. that are put together,

  752. but all of the Bible

  753. is one

  754. consistent story

  755. from the beginning

  756. to the end.

  757. It is the story

  758. of God

  759. creating

  760. people

  761. for a reason.

  762. It's the story

  763. of

  764. how we've

  765. fallen away

  766. that we've

  767. rebelled against God

  768. and God

  769. bringing

  770. us back

  771. to himself.

  772. We see that

  773. from

  774. Genesis

  775. to the culmination

  776. in Revelation

  777. where he has

  778. his church

  779. gathered

  780. from every nation,

  781. tribe,

  782. people,

  783. and language.

  784. One continuous story

  785. and it all

  786. points to one

  787. central person.

  788. Who is it?

  789. That's the

  790. church answer,

  791. right?

  792. It's Jesus.

  793. It all points

  794. back to Jesus.

  795. The next thing,

  796. all scripture

  797. is breathed out

  798. by God.

  799. That these are not

  800. a group of

  801. ignorant people

  802. writing about

  803. the things that

  804. were happening

  805. in their day

  806. not knowing

  807. how to explain it

  808. so they write it

  809. the best they could.

  810. That's not

  811. what the Bible is.

  812. It says that

  813. it is breathed

  814. out of the mouth

  815. of God.

  816. That this is

  817. God's word.

  818. And it's profitable

  819. for teaching.

  820. It profits us

  821. not by evoking

  822. emotions

  823. but by teaching us,

  824. instructing us.

  825. And it instructs us

  826. in the things of God.

  827. It's valuable

  828. because God

  829. places a value

  830. on it.

  831. Imagine

  832. if the God

  833. of the universe

  834. who created everything,

  835. who holds

  836. all things together,

  837. the God

  838. who made you

  839. and me

  840. says,

  841. hey,

  842. I want you to know

  843. why I made you.

  844. And I want you to know

  845. how to have relationship.

  846. I want you to not

  847. have to suffer

  848. the wrath

  849. of your sin.

  850. That's pretty important,

  851. right?

  852. That's pretty valuable

  853. for reproof,

  854. for correction

  855. and for training

  856. in righteousness.

  857. It tells us

  858. what sin is.

  859. It tells us

  860. how to live

  861. a righteous life,

  862. a life that pleases God.

  863. What's amazing,

  864. if you go into

  865. any bookstore

  866. in Hong Kong,

  867. most of the books

  868. that you see

  869. in the front

  870. have something

  871. to do with management

  872. or how to invest

  873. your money.

  874. All the practical things

  875. that you need

  876. for a life

  877. in Hong Kong.

  878. How to control people

  879. and how to gain wealth.

  880. It all seems

  881. very practical

  882. and some people say

  883. the Bible's

  884. just not practical.

  885. Wait a minute.

  886. Jesus had

  887. a very different take

  888. when he says,

  889. what will it profit

  890. a man to gain

  891. the whole world

  892. yet lose his own soul?

  893. How practical is that?

  894. That all of these things

  895. that one day

  896. are going to pass away

  897. but the Bible

  898. talks about

  899. the one thing

  900. that's going to last

  901. for eternity.

  902. God and the souls

  903. of people.

  904. That's very practical.

  905. That the man of God

  906. may be competent,

  907. equipped for every

  908. good work.

  909. Do you know that God

  910. calls us

  911. to his mission?

  912. That we are

  913. to be about

  914. his work.

  915. That the Bible

  916. equips us.

  917. It makes us competent

  918. for every good work.

  919. If we are not

  920. doing good work

  921. then we know

  922. that we are not

  923. good stewards

  924. of his word

  925. and it's called

  926. incompetency.

  927. To summarize,

  928. I want to do this.

  929. There are four areas

  930. of our lives

  931. that if we are stewards,

  932. good stewards

  933. of God's word

  934. that it will radically

  935. change us.

  936. I call it the head,

  937. heart,

  938. hands,

  939. and feet.

  940. The first is

  941. the head.

  942. That

  943. we will

  944. know

  945. his ways.

  946. Psalm 25

  947. you heard read

  948. earlier,

  949. make me to know

  950. your ways,

  951. O Lord.

  952. Teach me your paths.

  953. That we will know

  954. God's voice.

  955. My sheep hear

  956. my voice

  957. and I know them

  958. and they follow me.

  959. You know,

  960. sometimes

  961. when we pray

  962. and we don't

  963. get answers

  964. to our prayers

  965. or we hear

  966. all of these things.

  967. How do we

  968. distinguish

  969. what's God's voice

  970. and what's

  971. not God's voice?

  972. We know it

  973. by his word

  974. because we've heard

  975. his voice.

  976. We've seen

  977. his voice.

  978. We are

  979. intimately familiar.

  980. When I

  981. shout

  982. in a crowd

  983. of people,

  984. my son

  985. knows

  986. my voice

  987. because he

  988. has spent

  989. time

  990. with me

  991. and when

  992. he's behaving

  993. he runs

  994. right toward me.

  995. He's two.

  996. That doesn't happen

  997. a lot these days.

  998. You'll know

  999. God's voice

  1000. and you will

  1001. know

  1002. his

  1003. heart.

  1004. You'll know

  1005. his gospel.

  1006. What's the gospel?

  1007. For God

  1008. so loved

  1009. the world

  1010. that he

  1011. gave his

  1012. only son

  1013. that whoever

  1014. believes in

  1015. him

  1016. should not

  1017. perish

  1018. but have

  1019. eternal life.

  1020. Romans 5.8

  1021. But God

  1022. shows his

  1023. love for us

  1024. and that while

  1025. we were still

  1026. sinners

  1027. Christ

  1028. died

  1029. for us.

  1030. we will

  1031. know

  1032. Romans

  1033. 10.9

  1034. and 10

  1035. because if

  1036. you confess

  1037. with your

  1038. mouth that

  1039. Jesus is

  1040. Lord

  1041. and believe

  1042. in your

  1043. heart that

  1044. God raised

  1045. him from

  1046. the dead

  1047. you will

  1048. be saved

  1049. for with

  1050. the heart

  1051. one believes

  1052. and is

  1053. justified

  1054. and with

  1055. the mouth

  1056. one confesses

  1057. and is

  1058. saved.

  1059. We're talking

  1060. about a head

  1061. knowledge first.

  1062. If you're

  1063. a steward

  1064. of God's

  1065. word

  1066. you will

  1067. know

  1068. you will

  1069. recognize

  1070. God

  1071. but it

  1072. must not

  1073. stop there

  1074. because the

  1075. next when

  1076. we understand

  1077. his gospel

  1078. when we

  1079. understand that

  1080. we didn't do

  1081. anything to

  1082. deserve his

  1083. love and

  1084. forgiveness

  1085. it will sink

  1086. from here

  1087. to our

  1088. hearts

  1089. and it

  1090. will begin

  1091. to change

  1092. our hearts.

  1093. Hebrews 4.12

  1094. For the word

  1095. of God is

  1096. living and

  1097. active

  1098. sharper than

  1099. any two-edged

  1100. sword

  1101. piercing to

  1102. the division

  1103. of the soul

  1104. and of the

  1105. spirit

  1106. and of

  1107. joints

  1108. and marrows

  1109. and discerning

  1110. the thoughts

  1111. and intentions

  1112. of the heart.

  1113. That means

  1114. God's word

  1115. is the

  1116. blade

  1117. that does

  1118. the cutting

  1119. in our hearts

  1120. to remove

  1121. the junk

  1122. from our

  1123. hearts.

  1124. He starts

  1125. to change

  1126. us that

  1127. we begin

  1128. to want

  1129. the things

  1130. of God.

  1131. John

  1132. 17.17

  1133. Sanctify

  1134. them in

  1135. your truth

  1136. your word

  1137. is truth

  1138. sanctify

  1139. means

  1140. purified

  1141. set apart

  1142. made

  1143. clean

  1144. made

  1145. right

  1146. that happens

  1147. through his

  1148. word

  1149. the Holy Spirit

  1150. at work

  1151. through God's

  1152. word

  1153. changes

  1154. our hearts

  1155. and then it

  1156. begins to

  1157. manifest itself

  1158. in other ways

  1159. when Jesus

  1160. says something

  1161. like

  1162. but love

  1163. your enemies

  1164. do good

  1165. it starts

  1166. to go

  1167. from our

  1168. heart

  1169. to our

  1170. hands

  1171. starts

  1172. with a

  1173. head

  1174. knowledge

  1175. sinks

  1176. into our

  1177. hearts

  1178. and changes

  1179. us

  1180. but it

  1181. can't

  1182. just

  1183. stay

  1184. there

  1185. it's

  1186. not

  1187. meant

  1188. to

  1189. just

  1190. stay

  1191. in our

  1192. hearts

  1193. and we

  1194. have

  1195. our

  1196. own

  1197. little

  1198. personal

  1199. faith

  1200. that no

  1201. one

  1202. knows

  1203. about

  1204. but it

  1205. will

  1206. become

  1207. evident

  1208. because

  1209. it

  1210. will

  1211. become

  1212. evident

  1213. in

  1214. what

  1215. we

  1216. do

  1217. our

  1218. hands

  1219. Luke

  1220. 6

  1221. 46

  1222. says

  1223. why

  1224. this is

  1225. Jesus

  1226. speaking

  1227. why do

  1228. you

  1229. call

  1230. me

  1231. Lord

  1232. Lord

  1233. and do

  1234. not

  1235. do

  1236. what

  1237. I

  1238. tell

  1239. you

  1240. 1

  1241. John

  1242. 2

  1243. 5

  1244. but

  1245. whoever

  1246. keeps

  1247. his

  1248. word

  1249. in

  1250. him

  1251. truly

  1252. the

  1253. love

  1254. of

  1255. God

  1256. is

  1257. perfected

  1258. by

  1259. this

  1260. we

  1261. may

  1262. know

  1263. that

  1264. we

  1265. are

  1266. in

  1267. him

  1268. whoever

  1269. says

  1270. he

  1271. abides

  1272. in

  1273. me

  1274. ought

  1275. to

  1276. walk

  1277. in

  1278. the

  1279. same

  1280. way

  1281. in

  1282. which

  1283. he

  1284. walked

  1285. what

  1286. does

  1287. that

  1288. mean

  1289. why

  1290. do

  1291. we

  1292. do

  1293. what

  1294. Jesus

  1295. told

  1296. us

  1297. to

  1298. do

  1299. is it

  1300. because

  1301. we

  1302. can

  1303. earn

  1304. salvation

  1305. that

  1306. way

  1307. no

  1308. way

  1309. is it

  1310. so we

  1311. can

  1312. earn

  1313. the

  1314. favor

  1315. of

  1316. God

  1317. no

  1318. it's

  1319. because

  1320. we've

  1321. heard

  1322. his

  1323. word

  1324. we

  1325. know

  1326. it

  1327. in

  1328. our

  1329. minds

  1330. it's

  1331. gone

  1332. into

  1333. our

  1334. heart

  1335. it's

  1336. changed

  1337. us

  1338. we

  1339. have

  1340. salvation

  1341. already

  1342. and

  1343. because

  1344. of

  1345. that

  1346. we

  1347. want

  1348. to

  1349. do

  1350. and

  1351. to

  1352. live

  1353. the

  1354. way

  1355. God

  1356. wants

  1357. us

  1358. to

  1359. live

  1360. and

  1361. lastly

  1362. it

  1363. will

  1364. radically

  1365. change

  1366. our

  1367. feet

  1368. what

  1369. do

  1370. I

  1371. mean

  1372. by

  1373. that

  1374. that's

  1375. weird

  1376. if

  1377. you're

  1378. a

  1379. good

  1380. steward

  1381. of

  1382. God's

  1383. word

  1384. you

  1385. have

  1386. a

  1387. knowledge

  1388. of

  1389. God

  1390. your

  1391. heart

  1392. is

  1393. changed

  1394. it's

  1395. evident

  1396. in

  1397. the

  1398. things

  1399. that

  1400. you

  1401. do

  1402. and

  1403. how

  1404. you

  1405. live

  1406. but

  1407. it

  1408. will

  1409. also

  1410. change

  1411. where

  1412. you

  1413. go

  1414. let

  1415. me

  1416. explain

  1417. what

  1418. I

  1419. mean

  1420. Matthew

  1421. 28

  1422. 19

  1423. go

  1424. therefore

  1425. and make

  1426. disciples

  1427. of

  1428. all

  1429. nations

  1430. baptizing

  1431. them

  1432. in the

  1433. name

  1434. of

  1435. the

  1436. Father

  1437. the

  1438. Son

  1439. and

  1440. the

  1441. Holy

  1442. Spirit

  1443. teaching

  1444. them

  1445. to

  1446. obey

  1447. all

  1448. that

  1449. I

  1450. have

  1451. commanded

  1452. you

  1453. and

  1454. behold

  1455. I'm

  1456. with

  1457. you

  1458. always

  1459. to

  1460. the

  1461. very

  1462. end

  1463. of

  1464. the

  1465. age

  1466. God's

  1467. passion

  1468. is

  1469. not

  1470. for

  1471. just

  1472. you

  1473. alone

  1474. to

  1475. know

  1476. him

  1477. to

  1478. be

  1479. made

  1480. right

  1481. by

  1482. him

  1483. and

  1484. for

  1485. you

  1486. to

  1487. walk

  1488. alone

  1489. and

  1490. never

  1491. tell

  1492. anyone

  1493. but

  1494. God's

  1495. passion

  1496. Jesus

  1497. said

  1498. I've

  1499. come

  1500. to

  1501. seek

  1502. and

  1503. save

  1504. the

  1505. lost

  1506. if

  1507. he

  1508. if

  1509. you

  1510. have

  1511. a

  1512. head

  1513. knowledge

  1514. of

  1515. God

  1516. and

  1517. a

  1518. heart

  1519. knowledge

  1520. of

  1521. God

  1522. if

  1523. you're

  1524. doing

  1525. what

  1526. Jesus

  1527. has

  1528. told

  1529. you

  1530. out

  1531. of

  1532. love

  1533. for

  1534. him

  1535. then

  1536. you

  1537. must

  1538. be

  1539. about

  1540. his

  1541. mission

  1542. the

  1543. Bible

  1544. tells

  1545. us

  1546. oh

  1547. how

  1548. beautiful

  1549. are

  1550. the

  1551. feet

  1552. of

  1553. those

  1554. who

  1555. bring

  1556. good

  1557. news

  1558. if

  1559. you're

  1560. in

  1561. here

  1562. this

  1563. morning

  1564. and

  1565. you'd

  1566. say

  1567. I'm

  1568. not

  1569. a

  1570. Christian

  1571. I

  1572. still

  1573. have

  1574. questions

  1575. I

  1576. was

  1577. dragged

  1578. here

  1579. I

  1580. was

  1581. promised

  1582. lunch

  1583. afterwards

  1584. we

  1585. are

  1586. glad

  1587. that

  1588. you

  1589. are

  1590. here

  1591. because

  1592. we

  1593. believe

  1594. it's

  1595. not

  1596. by

  1597. accident

  1598. that

  1599. any

  1600. of

  1601. you

  1602. are

  1603. here

  1604. this

  1605. morning

  1606. I

  1607. want

  1608. to

  1609. plead

  1610. with

  1611. you

  1612. and

  1613. beg

  1614. you

  1615. to

  1616. consider

  1617. the

  1618. word

  1619. of

  1620. God

  1621. and

  1622. to

  1623. investigate

  1624. the

  1625. claims

  1626. that

  1627. we

  1628. make

  1629. here

  1630. this

  1631. morning

  1632. that

  1633. God's

  1634. word

  1635. is

  1636. all

  1637. about

  1638. how

  1639. he

  1640. created

  1641. you

  1642. for

  1643. a

  1644. reason

  1645. and

  1646. he

  1647. wants

  1648. to

  1649. glorify

  1650. himself

  1651. by

  1652. pursuing

  1653. you

  1654. through

  1655. the

  1656. generations

  1657. and

  1658. bringing

  1659. you

  1660. back

  1661. home

  1662. a

  1663. loving

  1664. father

  1665. that's

  1666. searching

  1667. for

  1668. you

  1669. will

  1670. you

  1671. join

  1672. with

  1673. us

  1674. in

  1675. being

  1676. good

  1677. stewards

  1678. of

  1679. his

  1680. word

  1681. investigate

  1682. these

  1683. claims

  1684. if

  1685. you're

  1686. a

  1687. believer

  1688. in

  1689. here

  1690. this

  1691. morning

  1692. if

  1693. you

  1694. say

  1695. I'm

  1696. a

  1697. Christian

  1698. let

  1699. me

  1700. ask

  1701. you

  1702. are

  1703. you

  1704. a

  1705. good

  1706. steward

  1707. of

  1708. God's

  1709. word

  1710. do

  1711. you

  1712. know

  1713. him

  1714. through

  1715. his

  1716. word

  1717. is

  1718. he

  1719. constantly

  1720. changing

  1721. your

  1722. heart

  1723. through

  1724. his

  1725. word

  1726. are

  1727. you

  1728. doing

  1729. are

  1730. you

  1731. living

  1732. it

  1733. out

  1734. and

  1735. are

  1736. you

  1737. passionate

  1738. about

  1739. taking

  1740. the

  1741. gospel

  1742. to

  1743. those

  1744. who

  1745. need

  1746. it

  1747. that's

  1748. how

  1749. you

  1750. recognize

  1751. a

  1752. good

  1753. steward

  1754. of

  1755. God's

  1756. word

  1757. we

  1758. have

  1759. up here

  1760. on the

  1761. board

  1762. behind

  1763. us

  1764. and

  1765. also

  1766. in

  1767. your

  1769. this

  1801. a

  1803. I

  1804. want
