  1. The reading of God's Word today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 11, verses 14 to 36.

    Luke 11:14–36

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. And he was casting out a demon, but it was mute.

  4. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the crowds were...

  5. But when some of them said, he cast out demons by Bezabal, the ruler of the demons,

  6. others to test him, were demanding of him a sign from heaven.

  7. But he knew their thoughts and said to them,

  8. Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a house divided against itself falls.

  9. If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?

  10. For you say that I cast out demons by Bezabal,

  11. and if I, by Bezabal, cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out?

  12. So they will be your judges.

  13. But if I cast out demons by the finger of God,

  14. then the kingdom of God has come upon you.

  15. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house,

  16. his possessions are undisturbed.

  17. But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him,

  18. he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied,

  19. and distributes his plunder.

  20. He who is not with me is against me,

  21. and he who does not gather with me scatters.

  22. When the unclean spirit goes out of a man,

  23. it passes through waterless places seeking rest,

  24. and not finding any, it says,

  25. I will return to my house from which I came.

  26. And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order.

  27. Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits,

  28. more evil than itself,

  29. and they go in and live there.

  30. And the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.

  31. While Jesus was saying these things,

  32. one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to him,

  33. Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breast at which you nursed.

  34. But he said,

  35. On the contrary,

  36. blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.

  37. As the crowds were increasing,

  38. he began to say,

  39. This generation is a wicked generation.

  40. It seeks for a sign,

  41. and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah.

  42. For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites,

  43. so will the Son of Man be this generation.

  44. The Queen of the South will rise up with the men of this generation at the judgment

  45. and condemn them because she came from the ends of the earth

  46. to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

  47. And behold,

  48. something greater than Solomon is here.

  49. The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment

  50. and condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah.

  51. And behold,

  52. something greater than Jonah is here.

  53. No one,

  54. after lighting a lamp,

  55. puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket,

  56. but on the lampstand,

  57. so that those who enter may see the light.

  58. The eye is the lamp of your body.

  59. When your eye is clear,

  60. your whole body is also full of light.

  61. But when it is bad,

  62. your body also is full of darkness.

  63. Then watch out that the light in you is not darkness.

  64. If therefore your whole body is full of light,

  65. with no dark part in it,

  66. it will be wholly illumined.

  67. And when the lamp illumines you with its rays.

  68. This is the reading of God's word.

  69. The following is a letter documenting the correspondence between two demons in our world.

  70. My dear Wormwood,

  71. I was quite disappointed to learn of your patience' conversion to the enemy's side.

  72. While your incompetence in preventing this from happening will not go unpunished,

  73. all is not yet lost.

  74. Though he is now a Christian,

  75. and you have lost that battle,

  76. our war is still on,

  77. and requires new tactics for which we have an entire specialized arsenal.

  78. Do not try with arguments to persuade him to leave the enemy.

  79. That will only embolden him all the more.

  80. No, make him comfortable now.

  81. Put his mind at ease.

  82. Convince him our battle is either over,

  83. or that it never happened.

  84. You must not let him learn,

  85. or feel in any way that he is in the vanguard of our war.

  86. Now,

  87. busyness is one of our Father Below's greatest tactics.

  88. If he can be made so busy with practical,

  89. ordinary, daily concerns of work,

  90. relationships,

  91. and even church activities,

  92. he won't have time to spend with the enemy,

  93. or to think about eternal matters.

  94. Trust me,

  95. once he's been secluded from the enemy by busyness,

  96. you can begin to show him so many other humans around him

  97. who unknowingly serve our cause,

  98. who have more money,

  99. who are more attractive,

  100. powerful,

  101. and even nicer than him.

  102. He can then become convinced that others are happier than he is,

  103. and therefore they have no need of God.

  104. You see,

  105. over the course of thousands of years,

  106. our Father Below has conditioned the human mind

  107. to subconsciously think

  108. that it has all the time in the world,

  109. and he can straddle the fence in this war of souls and eternity.

  110. Make him forget

  111. that he is now an important part of our enemy's army,

  112. and that his home is heaven,

  113. and not really earth.

  114. Lull him into comfort and security in this world,

  115. and he will quickly forget his duty to the next world,

  116. and those around him who are trapped in our plans,

  117. and destined for a well-deserved destruction

  118. and habitation with us down below.

  119. Before too long,

  120. he will become convinced

  121. that as long as he doesn't stray too far

  122. into being too bad or too good,

  123. that he can remain neutral and comfortable.

  124. When he has the fantasy of being neutral,

  125. firmly plant in his mind,

  126. he becomes a valuable weapon for our cause,

  127. since he will have no idea

  128. he's been following our orders.

  129. Keep him in this state of numbness

  130. as long as possible,

  131. as the damage we can do

  132. by these simple lies

  133. in his life

  134. and those around him

  135. will be great.

  136. Your affectionate uncle,

  137. Screwtape.

  138. Wow.

  139. I don't know if I can get my voice that deep.

  140. God has equipped people in the body

  141. with many talents, huh?

  142. How you guys doing?

  143. Good?

  144. Good?

  145. Good, good.

  146. Okay, well,

  147. you know,

  148. as I am a pastor

  149. and a dad

  150. and a husband,

  151. I wear a lot of different hats.

  152. As a pastor,

  153. I have a couple burdens

  154. that weigh on me.

  155. One of the burdens is

  156. that sometimes we would forget

  157. or somehow that we would forget

  158. why we are here as a church.

  159. We've said from the very beginning,

  160. you see it in documents,

  161. you see it in the website,

  162. that we are here for the glory of God

  163. and for those not in church on Sunday.

  164. The idea of that is that we're missional,

  165. we're outwardly focused,

  166. we're about talking to people

  167. wherever God has us at our workplace

  168. or wherever we're traveling,

  169. and we're about sharing our lives

  170. and the gospel with them there

  171. and also bringing them here.

  172. But meeting them where they're at,

  173. my fear is that sometimes we forget that

  174. or I forget that.

  175. Another thing that I have a burden for

  176. as I think about my life

  177. is I forget why we're here.

  178. If you read the documents

  179. and see on the website,

  180. we say that Watermark, we believe,

  181. exists for the glory of God

  182. and to allow people

  183. to take their next step

  184. in their spiritual journey.

  185. I think sometimes we forget that also.

  186. When I teach a sermon,

  187. I have this incredible burden

  188. that you're going to hear it

  189. and you're going to go,

  190. this is where I need to be right now.

  191. And you're going to walk away just,

  192. that's just impossible.

  193. But we're here on a journey

  194. and a journey consists of many steps,

  195. taking them and changing.

  196. So our hope is after you hear a sermon,

  197. you come to worship

  198. and you experience community

  199. and you eat great food

  200. and you have the Lord speak to you

  201. in this time,

  202. you start thinking,

  203. okay, what is the next step for me?

  204. Now we don't want anybody

  205. to stay where they are.

  206. If you stay where you are

  207. the same place this year

  208. as you are next year,

  209. then we feel like something's gone wrong.

  210. But it's a journey

  211. that we take little steps

  212. and so all along we're saying,

  213. okay, God,

  214. what is the next step in my life

  215. and how can I honor you

  216. and please you

  217. as I walk in this direction?

  218. When I was looking at this passage

  219. for quite a while,

  220. I was reminded of this story

  221. of this missionary doctor in Africa

  222. and the story,

  223. which is true,

  224. said that this doctor

  225. was reaching out

  226. to this tribe in Africa

  227. and one day

  228. the princess of the tribe

  229. came to meet him

  230. and as she walked up to his house,

  231. she saw a mirror

  232. hanging by his door.

  233. Well, it was just a normal mirror.

  234. It was a mirror

  235. that he used to shave

  236. and brush his teeth

  237. and get ready every day,

  238. but this lady

  239. had never seen a mirror.

  240. And so she's attracted

  241. by the glinting of it

  242. and she went up

  243. to the glinting of it

  244. and she saw it

  245. and she grabbed it

  246. and she looked at it

  247. and she pulled it up

  248. to her face

  249. and she saw the most ugly

  250. and hideous face

  251. she'd ever seen.

  252. Well, she pushed it back

  253. and she looked on the back side of it

  254. to see what was back there,

  255. but there was nothing.

  256. And she asked the doctor,

  257. what is this?

  258. This is a mirror.

  259. Well, what do you use this for?

  260. Why, I use this to look at myself

  261. and to understand

  262. what I look like.

  263. And asked her,

  264. she was convinced

  265. that there wasn't a trick behind it.

  266. She said, I want this.

  267. I must have this.

  268. And the doctor goes,

  269. well, this is my only mirror.

  270. I need this to shave

  271. and brush my teeth

  272. and there's not another mirror.

  273. I need this.

  274. She goes, I'll pay you

  275. vast amounts of money for this.

  276. I'll give you all these

  277. elephant tusks of ivory

  278. and anything you want,

  279. I'll give this to you.

  280. Well, the doctor thought about it

  281. for a while and he said,

  282. I need this.

  283. It's going to be months

  284. before I can get another one,

  285. but for the sake

  286. of the relationship

  287. with this lady,

  288. I'm going to give her

  289. this mirror.

  290. And so he gives

  291. the princess this mirror

  292. and she takes this mirror

  293. and she looks at it

  294. very intently

  295. and stares.

  296. And then all of a sudden

  297. with just a violent movement,

  298. she throws it to the ground

  299. and shatters it

  300. in a thousand pieces.

  301. And the doctor looks at her like,

  302. and she goes,

  303. there.

  304. You're never going to tell

  305. on me again.

  306. Now the reason I tell

  307. that story is because

  308. that is how I feel

  309. sometimes

  310. when I come to God's word.

  311. We come down

  312. and we open God's word

  313. and it's a mirror

  314. to our souls.

  315. It shows us what we're really like

  316. and what we really are

  317. and you can't hide

  318. from a mirror

  319. because a mirror

  320. always tells the truth

  321. and sometimes we just want

  322. to throw it away

  323. because it's too hard.

  324. But when we come

  325. to God's word,

  326. we see that there's

  327. two things working.

  328. There's his holiness

  329. and his character

  330. and there's our incredible need

  331. for him

  332. and our brokenness.

  333. And as we grow

  334. on this journey,

  335. in between there

  336. is the cross

  337. and grace

  338. and forgiveness

  339. and mercy.

  340. And if we forget

  341. mercy and grace

  342. and we just see

  343. judgment

  344. and hard things,

  345. we just become

  346. we become

  347. not good.

  348. We walk in fear.

  349. And if we just see grace

  350. and we don't see truth

  351. and holiness

  352. and God's character,

  353. then we forget

  354. why we have grace

  355. and we just start doing

  356. whatever we want to do

  357. because we forget

  358. who we are.

  359. But when we come

  360. to God's word,

  361. my prayer is that

  362. we'll see all of these things

  363. brought together

  364. and we'll fall in love

  365. with Christ.

  366. Today's passage

  367. is an interesting passage.

  368. Last week,

  369. we talked about

  370. prayer

  371. and you're going to understand

  372. why we talked about prayer

  373. because today,

  374. we're going to talk about

  375. choices we need to make.

  376. And in this passage,

  377. I think we're going to see

  378. three choices.

  379. We're going to see choices

  380. that we have to make

  381. in what side we're on.

  382. We're going to see choices

  383. we're going to have to make

  384. in what power

  385. we choose from.

  386. And we're going to see choices

  387. that we have to make

  388. in how we're going to live

  389. our life every day.

  390. If you look in your bulletin,

  391. we're looking at Luke

    Luke 11:14–36

  392. chapter 11

  393. verses 14 through 36.

  394. I think that I'll probably

  395. only get to 28 today.

  396. And this is what we're

  397. talking about

  398. is we look at the choice

  399. of what side

  400. we're going to be on.

  401. Now remember,

  402. Jesus had just taught

  403. this lesson on prayer

  404. and he said that we,

  405. this is how you pray.

  406. It's the only time

  407. his disciples ever

  408. taught him how to do anything.

  409. And he said,

  410. you pray knowing

  411. who God is.

  412. You pray knowing

  413. how to pray to him.

  414. You come to him

  415. as a father

  416. in a child's relationship.

  417. And you know why

  418. you come to him

  419. because he's good.

  420. And today we look at

  421. why we need to come to him.

  422. Why we need to pray.

  423. Verse 14 says,

  424. and he was casting out

  425. a demon and it was mute

  426. and the demon had gone out

  427. and the mute man spoke

  428. and the crowds were amazed.

  429. The word in Greek

  430. is like they were like,

  431. oh my gosh.

  432. But some of them

  433. in verse 15

  434. and we know who these are

  435. because of Matthew

  436. and Mark's account,

  437. they're the religious leaders.

  438. The religious leaders

  439. have been finding,

  440. trying to find a way

  441. to crucify Christ.

  442. They've been trying

  443. to find a way

  444. to label him

  445. as a blasphemer,

  446. a guy who hates God.

  447. And so they watch

  448. these things happen,

  449. these incredible things.

  450. He's casting out

  451. these demons

  452. and they say,

  453. he cast out demons

  454. by Beelzebul,

  455. the ruler of the demons.

  456. Now it's a very

  457. interesting word there.

  458. Basically what they're saying

  459. is that Beelzebul

  460. is the name

  461. that the Jews

  462. finally gave

  463. to the devil.

  464. It was the ruler

  465. of the Canaanites.

  466. They worshiped Baal.

  467. His name was Baal the prince

  468. but they called him

  469. Beelzebul,

  470. the Jewish people did

  471. because it meant

  472. that he was

  473. the Lord of flies.

  474. And so after seeing

  475. all these miracles

  476. they look at what Jesus did

  477. and they say,

  478. you are the Lord of crap

  479. because that's where

  480. flies come to.

  481. Can you imagine that?

  482. You're the Lord of the flies.

  483. Others,

  484. to test him,

  485. in Greek the word

  486. basically means

  487. to find fault,

  488. to trick him.

  489. It's the same word

  490. that was used by Satan

  491. when he took him out

  492. into wilderness

  493. to tempt him.

  494. They were demanding

  495. a sign from heaven.

  496. They wanted to see

  497. something huge.

  498. They wanted to see

  499. an eclipse

  500. or something

  501. that was out of control.

  502. I thought about

  503. this passage a lot

  504. because we live around

  505. people all the time

  506. and say,

  507. if God could just

  508. show himself to me,

  509. if Jesus could just

  510. show himself,

  511. then I'll believe.

  512. But here you have people

  513. who are with Jesus

  514. every day

  515. and they saw

  516. amazing things

  517. from him.

  518. Feeding 5,000,

  519. catching fish,

  520. healing people,

  521. bringing people

  522. from the dead,

  523. freeing people

  524. who are demonically

  525. possessed

  526. and all of these people

  527. say,

  528. I still don't believe.

  529. Would we really believe

  530. that Jesus walked

  531. in the room right now?

  532. The people in Jesus' day

  533. didn't.

  534. They wanted a sign.

  535. But he knew their thoughts

  536. and he said to them,

  537. so he's listening

  538. to their thoughts

  539. and he can hear

  540. their hearts.

  541. Any kingdom divided

  542. against itself

  543. is laid waste

  544. and the house divided

  545. against itself falls

  546. and if Satan is also

  547. divided against himself,

  548. how will his kingdom stand?

  549. He said,

  550. for you say

  551. that I cast out demons

  552. by Beelzebul.

  553. So he gives them

  554. this benefit of the doubt.

  555. So let's say I do.

  556. I do cast them out

  557. by Beelzebul.

  558. Well then how do

  559. your sons cast them out?

  560. Because it was well recorded

  561. that Jewish historians

  562. throughout history,

  563. that Jewish guys

  564. would go around

  565. and they would

  566. exercise demons.

  567. Some of them

  568. would do it

  569. with incantation,

  570. some of them

  571. would do it

  572. with a potion,

  573. but it happened.

  574. And in the Talmud,

  575. the rabbis always said

  576. that anybody

  577. who could cast out

  578. a demon was definitely

  579. the hand,

  580. the finger of God

  581. and Jesus says,

  582. okay, let's say

  583. that I am.

  584. How do your guys do it?

  585. If I, by Beelzebul,

  586. cast out demons

  587. by whom you,

  588. do your sons

  589. cast them out

  590. so they will be

  591. your judges

  592. but I,

  593. if I cast out demons

  594. by the finger of God

  595. and the minute he said that

  596. they would have thought

  597. back to Egypt

  598. with Moses

  599. in front of Pharaoh,

  600. it's the exact same words

  601. of God's handwriting,

  602. it's the exact same words

  603. of God's finger

  604. writing out the Ten Commandments,

  605. everybody would have understood

  606. what he was saying.

  607. If I write out

  608. and do these things

  609. by the finger of God

  610. then the kingdom of God

  611. has come upon you.

  612. God is here.

  613. The Messiah is here.

  614. If these things

  615. are really happening,

  616. God is in your presence.

  617. What are you going

  618. to do about it?

  619. How are you going

  620. to react

  621. when a strong man

  622. fully armed

  623. guards his own house?

  624. His possessions

  625. are undisturbed.

  626. But when someone

  627. stronger than he

  628. attacks and overpowers him,

  629. he takes away from him

  630. all his armor

  631. on which he rallied

  632. and relied

  633. and he distributes

  634. his plunder

  635. and immediately

  636. the people would have known

  637. who he was talking about.

  638. The strong man

  639. is Satan,

  640. the devil.

  641. And he has this world

  642. under control.

  643. and his possessions

  644. are who?

  645. Who are his possessions?

  646. Us.

  647. His possessions are us.

  648. You have an owner.

  649. Everyone has an owner

  650. or a master.

  651. And so the strong man

  652. guards his house

  653. and the only thing

  654. that a strong man

  655. is worried about

  656. is somebody stronger

  657. and when the stronger

  658. person comes,

  659. Jesus,

  660. he attacks him,

  661. he overpowers him,

  662. he pins him down,

  663. he conquers him completely,

  664. he takes off his armor

  665. and he distributes everything.

  666. Well, Jesus is just

  667. describing what happened.

  668. He just cast out a demon.

  669. He just bound

  670. the strong man

  671. and he freed this guy

  672. like he does

  673. in our lives.

  674. And then he says

  675. something very specific.

  676. My mouth is dry.

  677. All this time

  678. he's trying to share

  679. that we're in this war,

  680. that there's these two kingdoms

  681. that are fighting each other.

  682. There's only two kingdoms.

  683. There's a kingdom of God

  684. and there's a kingdom

  685. of the devil.

  686. Is there a third kingdom?

  687. No, there's not a third kingdom.

  688. There's two kingdoms.

  689. There's a kingdom of God

  690. and there's a kingdom

  691. of the devil.

  692. And all these passages

  693. Jesus is trying to say

  694. that we're in the middle

  695. of this huge war

  696. that is much greater

  697. than anything we could talk about,

  698. that Satan is real.

  699. He's trying to grab people

  700. to his kingdom.

  701. He's trying to keep them blinded.

  702. He's trying to let them forget

  703. that there's a battle going on.

  704. In verse 23

  705. he says something

  706. very hard and harsh.

  707. He says,

  708. he who is not with me

  709. is against me

  710. and he who does not gather

  711. with me scatters.

  712. Did you hear what he said?

  713. I mean,

  714. the minute he said that

  715. everybody would have just,

  716. he who is not with me

  717. is against me

  718. and he who does not gather

  719. with me scatters.

  720. I mean,

  721. Jesus is saying there,

  722. and this is huge,

  723. he's saying there's no,

  724. there's no neutrality.

  725. You can't sit on a fence.

  726. There's no Switzerland.

  727. There's no place

  728. in between the two kingdoms

  729. where you're safe.

  730. You're either in one kingdom

  731. or in your other kingdom.

  732. Either you're working

  733. for the kingdom

  734. or you're working

  735. for the other kingdom,

  736. but there's no,

  737. there's no neutral place.

  738. You can't be indifferent.

  739. You can't say,

  740. well,

  741. I just,

  742. you know,

  743. I don't know.

  744. I'm just trying

  745. to make a decision still.

  746. I haven't heard enough yet.

  747. But what Jesus is saying

  748. to his disciples

  749. and he's saying to us

  750. is that

  751. every one of us

  752. is in one of two camps.

  753. Now,

  754. I'm not saying

  755. that if you don't

  756. follow Christ right now

  757. that you're demon possessed.

  758. That's not what

  759. the passage says here.

  760. But the passage says

  761. that if you're not

  762. a Christ follower

  763. that you're in demon territory.

  764. And that Satan

  765. has control

  766. of where you walk

  767. and what you do

  768. and who you are

  769. and what happens

  770. in your life.

  771. And Jesus says to us

  772. and he says to them,

  773. hey,

  774. we need to make a choice.

  775. Every woman,

  776. every man

  777. is either for Christ

  778. or you're against Christ.

  779. Every woman,

  780. every man

  781. is either for Christ

  782. or you're against Christ.

  783. Jesus doesn't allow

  784. a spiritual reality

  785. of a center

  786. in between place.

  787. He's saying

  788. we gotta choose.

  789. How do we choose?

  790. What does it mean

  791. to take that next step

  792. into choosing?

  793. He uses very specific words.

  794. He says gathered.

  795. And the minute people

  796. in Jesus' day

  797. would have understood this,

  798. they would have thought

  799. of a couple things.

  800. They would have thought

  801. about the shepherds

  802. that go out

  803. and get the sheep

  804. and gather them.

  805. But they would have thought

  806. about this passage

  807. in Judges.

  808. And there's a story

  809. in Judges 8

  810. where Gideon

  811. is about to go up

  812. against the Midianites

  813. and the Midianites

  814. have an army

  815. of like 30,000 people.

  816. And God basically

  817. whittles Gideon's army

  818. down to 300 men

  819. and God gives them

  820. victory over the 30,000 people.

  821. And after the battle

  822. is over,

  823. Gideon is chasing

  824. these guys

  825. and they're corralling them,

  826. they're gathering them,

  827. they're destroying them utterly

  828. and they come to this city,

  829. Sukkoth.

  830. And they go to the city

  831. and say,

  832. we need your help

  833. because we're in the middle

  834. of this huge battle

  835. and things are raging

  836. and we need food

  837. and we need refreshment

  838. and we need you

  839. to come join us

  840. because we need your help.

  841. And the people of Sukkoth

  842. said what?

  843. You know,

  844. it's not really clear to us

  845. who's going to win this battle.

  846. We really don't know

  847. what side we want to be on.

  848. I think we'll just stay

  849. right in the center

  850. and see what happens.

  851. And Gideon says,

  852. okay, you can do that.

  853. But after I win

  854. through God's power,

  855. I'm going to come back

  856. and we're going to have a talk.

  857. And the talk's not going

  858. to be very good.

  859. It's going to be hard.

  860. What Jesus says here

  861. is in reality,

  862. in spiritual world,

  863. that it's impossible

  864. to remain neutral.

  865. That Satan sees neutral people

  866. as his.

  867. And you might walk around

  868. and say,

  869. I'm neutral,

  870. I'm Switzerland.

  871. But the demonic forces

  872. in our world today

  873. don't honor neutrality.

  874. They want us to pick a side.

  875. The next passage I see

  876. as we read through this

  877. in verses 24 through 28,

  878. we get this choice

  879. and the choice is,

  880. do pick a power.

  881. How are we going to live?

  882. And Jesus tells this story

  883. and it's a very interesting

  884. parable in a story

  885. and it's never told before

  886. and he basically says,

  887. this is what happens

  888. when we try to live our life

  889. in our power.

  890. He says,

  891. when an unclean spirit

  892. goes out of a man,

  893. it passes from waterless places

  894. seeking rest

  895. and not finding any

  896. that says,

  897. I'll return to my home

  898. from which I came.

  899. And when it comes,

  900. it finds it swept

  901. and kept in order.

  902. In Greek,

  903. the word is beautiful.

  904. And then it goes

  905. and it takes along

  906. seven other spirits

  907. more evil than itself

  908. and they go in

  909. and they live there

  910. and the last day

  911. to that man

  912. becomes worse

  913. than the first.

  914. Jesus is trying

  915. to show us

  916. and try to show

  917. his disciples

  918. that there are

  919. many ways to live.

  920. There are many ways

  921. to clean our house.

  922. But you gotta be careful

  923. how you do it.

  924. I mean,

  925. if you look at the world today,

  926. people,

  927. we're very complicated people.

  928. We're social

  929. and spiritual

  930. and physical

  931. and there's so many

  932. different dynamics

  933. and I've seen so many people

  934. change their lives,

  935. lose 80 pounds

  936. and become disciplined

  937. and they all do it

  938. through some kind

  939. of power and strength.

  940. And Jesus says,

  941. be careful guys

  942. where that power

  943. comes from.

  944. I think the question

  945. for us today

  946. I often hear is,

  947. does it work?

  948. Will it help me?

  949. I mean,

  950. will I feel better

  951. if I become a Christian

  952. or if I become a Buddhist?

  953. Does it make my life easier?

  954. Does it make my life sexy?

  955. I mean,

  956. if Christianity,

  957. maybe you've heard this,

  958. I don't know if you've heard this,

  959. but I hear it all the time,

  960. if Christianity won't give me

  961. what I want,

  962. I might as well be a Buddhist.

  963. I mean,

  964. I found real peace

  965. in going to the Hindu temple.

  966. What's wrong with that?

  967. It works for me.

  968. I mean,

  969. these books that I'm reading

  970. and these self-help books

  971. and these seminars,

  972. they've really helped me

  973. change my life around

  974. and Jesus gives this warning here

  975. and he says,

  976. be careful guys

  977. because if you try to

  978. renovate your own life,

  979. if you try to modify

  980. your behavior

  981. and you leave a vacuum

  982. in your life,

  983. then something's going to

  984. come into that vacuum.

  985. And the passage says

  986. that your old life

  987. is going to be worse

  988. than your new life.

  989. I mean,

  990. he wants us to think about

  991. that there's a way

  992. to get change

  993. and there's a way

  994. to get power

  995. and there's a way

  996. to clean our house

  997. and there's a way

  998. to give ourselves

  999. up to something.

  1000. I mean,

  1001. we all give ourselves

  1002. up to something,

  1003. don't we?

  1004. Don't we?

1005. Look at your business cards.

  1006. Look at your titles.

1007. Look at how you talk

  1008. about your heritage

  1009. or who you are.

  1010. We all give ourselves

  1011. up to something

1012. and Jesus is warning us

  1013. in this sense.

  1014. He says,

  1015. be careful

  1016. because these powers,

1017. they're going to change us.

1018. They're going to make us different.

  1019. And if you try

  1020. to change yourself

  1021. by anything but me,

  1022. it might work

  1023. for a while.

  1024. I mean,

  1025. you might find peace

1026. going to the Hindu temple.

  1027. You might find peace

  1028. sacrificing dogs.

  1029. All of these things

  1030. might give you peace.

  1031. But it doesn't mean

  1032. it's right.

1033. Where's the power come from?

  1034. How do we change

  1035. in our life?

  1036. In 1930,

  1037. the Great Depression

  1038. hit the world

  1039. and my grandparents

  1040. went through it

  1041. and they said afterwards,

  1042. we will never ever

  1043. be poor again.

  1044. They got self-control.

  1045. They got a vision.

  1046. They got power.

  1047. They got a drive.

  1048. They got their house

  1049. in order.

  1050. Their focus

  1051. and their goal

1052. was not to be poor,

  1053. not to depend

  1054. on other people

  1055. because people are worthless.

  1056. You cannot depend

  1057. on anybody else.

  1058. And this power

  1059. drove them

  1060. and this power

  1061. changed them

  1062. and this power

  1063. changed the way

  1064. that they saw people.

  1065. This power changed

1066. the way they saw stuff.

  1067. This power changed

  1068. the way they interacted

  1069. with their world.

  1070. And the question

  1071. I asked myself was,

  1072. were they better off

  1073. then

  1074. or before?

  1075. some people would say

  1076. the problem we have

  1077. in our world today

  1078. and the economy

  1079. and the way

  1080. everything is going

  1081. is because of that

1082. that we wanted to change.

1083. A very close friend of mine

1084. was taught at an early age.

1085. He said the key to life

1086. was to be very educated

  1087. and always maintain control

  1088. of his emotions.

  1089. Real men are tough,

  1090. smart,

  1091. and never show

  1092. their emotions.

  1093. emotions.

1094. He clung to these things

  1095. and he used them

  1096. to change himself.

  1097. He got smarter,

  1098. he got stronger,

  1099. he got colder,

  1100. he forgot his feelings,

1101. and he got his house

  1102. in order.

  1103. Fear

  1104. drove him

  1105. in everything

  1106. that he did

  1107. and he changed.

1108. Is he a better person?

  1109. I don't know,

  1110. I guess it depends

  1111. on who you ask.

  1112. His wife would say

1113. that she doesn't even know him,

  1114. that he feels distant

1115. and that she feels used by him.

1116. His kids are turning out

1117. just the way that he is

1118. and all of a sudden

  1119. he's starting to think,

1120. is that a good thing?

1121. But he grabbed that power,

1122. that power of being stupid

  1123. and poor

1124. and he used that power

  1125. to change his life

1126. and to get his life in order.

1127. And now he's looking at his life

  1128. and he's wondering,

1129. did he allow seven demons

1130. to come into his world

1131. and make his life worse

  1132. than it was before

1133. he grabbed onto those things?

  1134. I mean,

  1135. there are many ways

  1136. to fix ourselves,

  1137. guys.

  1138. We can use religion,

  1139. we can use education,

  1140. we can use money,

  1141. we can use power,

  1142. we can use relationships,

1143. we can use 12 steps,

1144. we can use self-help books,

  1145. we can use titles.

1146. Did I say we can use religion?

1147. We can use all these things.

1148. We can harness that power

  1149. and they will work

  1150. in our lives

  1151. for a while.

  1152. But what Jesus says

  1153. in his passages,

  1154. at what cost?

  1155. Is our life better

  1156. after all these things?

  1157. Are our families better

  1158. after all these things?

  1159. Are our relationships better

  1160. after all these things?

1161. Or will we let seven demons

1162. come in and control us?

  1163. The passage says

  1164. that if the power

  1165. doesn't come from Christ

  1166. in the gospel,

  1167. then the emptiness

1168. is going to be filled

1169. and you have to be careful

  1170. how you fill it.

  1171. Because it says,

  1172. then it goes

  1173. and it takes along

  1174. seven other spirits

  1175. more evil than itself

  1176. and they go in

  1177. and they live there

1178. and the last state of the man

1179. becomes worse than the first.

1180. The last state of the man

1181. becomes worse than the first

1182. and Jesus is telling us

1183. and he's telling his disciples

1184. and everyone who will listen

1185. that unless God changes you,

  1186. unless the Holy Spirit

  1187. fills you,

  1188. that there's a vacuum

  1189. and that vacuum

1190. is going to get filled up

  1191. by something

1192. and you better be careful

1193. because what fills it up

1194. might not be what you want.

  1195. Let the Holy Spirit

  1196. fill it up.

1197. So we choose a side

  1198. because there's no Switzerland.

  1199. We're asked to choose a power

1200. and make sure that it's not our own

1201. but it's the Holy Spirit

  1202. who's doing this

  1203. and then finally

  1204. we're asked to choose

  1205. a lifestyle,

  1206. a response

  1207. and we see that

  1208. in verse 27 and 28

1209. and I think this is hilarious.

1210. Please don't do this to me

1211. as I'm preaching or talking

1212. but as Jesus was saying

  1213. these things,

1214. one of the women cried out

  1215. and raised her voice

  1216. and she said,

  1217. blessed is the womb

  1218. that bore you

  1219. in the breast

  1220. at which you nursed.

1221. Now what do you say about that?

  1222. Thank you very much.

1223. Can some of the ushers

  1224. escort that lady

  1225. out of here please?

  1226. I mean,

  1227. in her goodness

1228. she's trying to praise Jesus.

  1229. In her goodness

  1230. she's trying to praise

  1231. and compliment Mary

1232. and everyone who hears that

  1233. hears these words.

  1234. Blessed are you

  1235. from where you came.

  1236. Blessed is your mother

  1237. because of you

  1238. and he redirects her

  1239. really gently

  1240. and he says

1241. in a South Alabama twang,

  1242. ma'am,

  1243. the reason my mama

  1244. is blessed

  1245. is because she heard

  1246. God's word

  1247. and she obeyed it.

  1248. Ma'am,

  1249. the reason my mama

  1250. is blessed

  1251. is the angel

  1252. came to her

  1253. and said,

  1254. Mary,

  1255. this is what's

1256. going to happen to you

  1257. and she looked

  1258. at that angel

  1259. and she said,

  1260. the hand servant

  1261. of the Lord

1262. may be done to me

  1263. as you said.

1264. And Jesus is telling us

  1265. and he's telling

  1266. his disciples here

1267. that we have a choice

  1268. how are we going

  1269. to respond

  1270. to what goes on

  1271. around us

  1272. and he says here

  1273. that God's people

  1274. respond

  1275. by listening

  1276. to God's word

  1277. and obeying it.

  1278. God's people

  1279. respond to his spirit

  1280. by listening

  1281. to God's word

  1282. and obeying it.

  1283. I mean,

  1284. we can obey

  1285. a lot of things

1286. but here in this passage

  1287. Christ says

  1288. true change,

  1289. true hope,

  1290. true blessedness

  1291. happens

  1292. because we hear

  1293. God's word

1294. and we can obey it.

  1295. Now,

  1296. how does all this

  1297. even happen?

  1298. How can I even

  1299. do this

  1300. in the passage

  1301. it says really clearly

  1302. because there was

  1303. a strong man

  1304. who had you

  1305. and me bound,

  1306. who had control

  1307. over everything

  1308. that we have,

  1309. who made all

  1310. of our decisions

  1311. for us

  1312. and controlled

  1313. our life.

  1314. And this stronger man,

  1315. Jesus,

  1316. comes in,

  1317. he breaks

  1318. those bondage

  1319. chains.

  1320. He gives us

  1321. freedom.

  1322. He gives us

  1323. hope.

  1324. He gives us

  1325. mercy.

  1326. He gives us

  1327. grace.

  1328. He gives us

  1329. a new family.

  1330. He says,

  1331. walk with me.

  1332. Walk with me.

  1333. there's a war

  1334. going all around us.

  1335. There's only

  1336. two sides.

  1337. We have a choice

  1338. to make every day.

  1339. We have a power

  1340. to choose from

  1341. and we have

  1342. a response.

  1343. And we have

  1344. a savior

  1345. who is beside you

  1346. all the way.

  1347. No matter

  1348. what you're going

  1349. to experience today,

  1350. no matter what happens

  1351. in your life,

1352. no matter who you are,

  1353. no one can say,

  1354. but you don't

  1355. know me,

  1356. this is really

  1357. happening to me.

  1358. Jesus says,

  1359. I know you.

  1360. And I freed you.

  1361. And you have

  1362. a choice.

  1363. Are you going

  1364. to walk with me

  1365. today?

  1366. Are you going

  1367. to trust me?

  1368. Are you going

  1369. to realize

  1370. that I'm good?

  1371. Let's pray.

  1372. Father,

  1373. we just thank you

  1374. for this day.

  1375. We thank you

  1376. for your word

  1377. which is so powerful.

  1378. We thank you

  1379. for the message

  1380. that we see

  1381. in your son.

  1382. We thank you

  1383. for the choices

  1384. that we have now

  1385. as your children.

  1386. Help us to see

  1387. the battle

  1388. around us.

  1389. help us

  1390. to realize

  1391. that there's

  1392. kingdoms at war

  1393. and that we're

  1394. not neutral.

  1395. Either the war

  1396. on one side

  1397. or the other.

  1398. Father,

  1399. help us to realize

  1400. that the power

  1401. to change

  1402. comes not

  1403. because we try

  1404. really hard

  1405. or we do

  1406. really well

  1407. or we read

  1408. a book,

  1409. but the power

  1410. to true change

  1411. comes because

  1412. of your son

  1413. and through

  1414. your spirit.

  1415. Father,

  1416. thank you

  1417. for the response

  1418. that you give us

  1419. to do every day

  1420. that we have

  1421. a choice

  1422. to listen

  1423. to your words,

  1424. to hear your words

  1425. speak to us,

  1426. to see the words

  1427. of life

  1428. come into our life

  1429. and you ask us

  1430. to obey.

  1431. Some of us

  1432. in here

  1433. realize

  1434. that's impossible.

  1435. It's impossible.

  1436. And your word

  1437. says,

  1438. yes it is.

  1439. It's impossible

  1440. in your own strength.

  1441. But the stronger

  1442. man has come in

  1443. and he's freed us

  1444. and allowed us

  1445. to choose

  1446. and to walk

  1447. and to read

  1448. and to obey

  1449. and to follow.

  1450. Father,

1451. may we be a church

  1452. and a people

  1453. who point people

  1454. to the stronger man

  1455. every day

  1456. in our journey.

  1457. Help us,

  1458. each one of us,

  1459. to realize

  1460. what it means

  1461. to take

  1462. small steps

  1463. of change

  1464. to trust you.

  1465. And Lord,

  1466. we come before you

  1467. in the middle

  1468. of this war

  1469. and we realize

  1470. how lost we are

  1471. and we can just

  1472. cry out to you

  1473. and claim your victory.

1474. We pray all these things

1475. in your son Jesus' name.

  1476. Amen.
