  1. Today's scripture reading comes from the book of Acts, chapter 1, verses 1 through 3.

    Acts 1:1–3

  2. In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all Jesus began to do and to teach

  3. until the day that he was taken up to heaven,

  4. after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.

  5. After his suffering, he presented himself to them

  6. and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.

  7. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  8. Please join us in prayer.

  9. Heavenly Father, as we stare our eyes and minds in heavens,

  10. we realize that everything in the universe, everything undersea, everything that's on earth,

  11. all the people that's around, it's all about you, Lord.

  12. It's all about us.

  13. Father, as we come together as a church, please help us focus in you, focus on Jesus.

  14. Fix our eyes upon you, Lord, and cast all our worries, fear, and pride behind us.

  15. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  16. God, we lift up our community, God.

  17. We lift up our church.

  18. Father, we just ask that you will just grow the relationships among our community groups, Lord.

  19. And we pray that those who are not in community will find it, God.

  20. We pray that we will always project and exude the image, Lord,

  21. the life of you that is a welcoming, caring heart.

  22. Father, I pray that we would love each other well.

  23. Lord, I pray that where there are walls or hurts between us, God,

  24. that we would restore those and reconcile those in your name, Jesus.

  25. Lord, we just ask that this inward relationship among our church members, God,

  26. would just be something so beautiful that would draw others to you, Father.

  27. May we just continue to trust you, God.

  28. May we continue to find unity as we walk towards you and rely on you, Jesus.

  29. God, just make us into your bride to shine brightly, to shine purely, God,

  30. and to love you so much, God, that we can't help but love those around us, Father.

  31. We pray all this in your name.

  32. Father, God, I also want to pray for our church as a whole, collectively,

  33. that we will be a blessing to our communities, Lord.

  34. Father, whether it be in our workplace or at home or in the place that we socialize, Lord,

  35. we want to ask that you would walk with us and you be there with us as we shine for you.

  36. And we want to pray specially for Sible Port, Lord.

  37. You have placed us in a very strategic place.

  38. We believe that you have a special plan for this area.

  39. And we pray, Father, for you to lead us step by step to guide us

  40. so that we can be a blessing to those who are here and be a light to them.

  41. Lord, I also want to pray for the upcoming outreaches for all the community groups during the Easter time, Lord,

  42. as they're planning that you will plan with them.

  43. And then you will prepare the places and prepare the people to do the work that you have sent

  44. so that we can truly be, you know, the center of good news that is extended beyond Jerusalem

  45. but into Samaria and all the world.

  46. We pray all this in Jesus' name.

  47. Amen.

  48. Amen.

  49. Stand and join us for another song.

  50. Just let's remain in that spirit of prayer.

  51. Behold the throne of God above.

  52. Before the throne that we can approach God.

  53. We can share our honest thoughts with him.

  54. And he hears us.

  55. That's amazing.

  56. It's so encouraging.

  57. Just as we sing this, make it your prayer.

  58. We're just taking communion together.

  59. The presence of God is here.

  60. He's in us.

  61. And so let's just engage with him.

  62. Good morning, Watermark.

  63. How y'all doing?

  64. If you walked in the church this morning or if you're new and you saw like people dress up,

  65. when I walk in and I actually see our youth pastor in suit and tie, I know this is not,

  66. don't feel underdressed if you are new.

  67. Like we have a wedding coming up afterwards.

  68. So some people will wear suit and tie today.

  69. So don't feel you underdressed.

  70. Watermark has been meeting a year and a half.

  71. And I have not seen the youth pastor in suit and tie at worship.

  72. We've been looking for the year and a half that we have been here.

  73. We've been looking at the gospel of Luke.

  74. And now we will take a little break after a year and a half.

  75. And we're actually about halfway through, Tobin, right?

  76. So we have at least another year coming up to continue to really look at the life of Christ.

  77. So I'm really excited to kickstart a new series today for the next three, four weeks.

  78. We'll be looking at the topic of prayer and what prayer really means.

  79. So I've mentioned that we have been meeting for a year and a half.

  80. But many of you here today probably have not even been with us for that long.

  81. We are pretty diverse and a pretty new community.

  82. So when we look around the people that we see here, there are people that may have come to Watermark

  83. because you have just moved here to Hong Kong within the last year and a half.

  84. And so you have made Watermark your church home or you have moved to Watermark

  85. because there wasn't a church in this area before.

  86. And you have decided to change your church membership to a church that's more in the proximity of your neighborhood.

  87. Maybe you're just here to explore Christianity and find out more about what God is like and what it's all about.

  88. But even if you're here and you've been in the founding team, the first 41 that decided to venture out and then start this church,

  89. even those 41 came from very different places.

  90. So with that diversity and we look at the topic of prayer,

  91. we see that we will probably have a lot of diversity even in our prayer life.

  92. There may be people here that have never really prayed at all.

  93. Or when you look in your prayer life, it's more like a ritual or tradition and prayers you have learned in your upbringing.

  94. And for others, it may be that the prayer is more something that you turn to in times of need.

  95. When things go wrong and then you realize,

  96. maybe I really have to turn back to God and seek his guidance.

  97. But you may also be here and prayer is like a part of the structure every day for you

  98. and you have a consistent prayer life.

  99. But wherever you are in this, we just want to acknowledge that we come from all the kinds of different places

  100. in the way that we view prayer and in the way that we practice prayer.

  101. So as we're starting the series on prayer,

  102. I just want to point out that this is just to lay a foundation,

  103. no matter where you are in this journey,

  104. that we have a starting point for a dialogue about prayer.

  105. And before we start to look at the first scripture passage that the worship team read,

  106. I just want to share a story with you and ask you a question.

  107. Have you ever been in that place where someone close to you passed away

  108. and then you were feeling like,

  109. I really would like to have another day talking and sharing and just asking some questions

  110. because I just really missed out on having this chance?

  111. In my life, there have been several of these moments,

  112. but one in particular has been when I was 18,

  113. my father suddenly died from a heart attack.

  114. And so the years coming after that, I wrestled a lot.

  115. And I remember after he passed away,

  116. there were moments where a door would open or a car would come

  117. and I would look and see whether it was his car

  118. or I would walk through the streets and I saw someone

  119. and I thought I saw him.

  120. And sometimes in my dreams, I would wake up and felt,

  121. oh, you know, I just talked with him.

  122. Like, isn't he still alive?

  123. And it took me many years to really walk through that experience

  124. and to really reconcile that experience that he had passed away

  125. and that this time is not really coming in this lifetime.

  126. And so I was wondering, like, what would be the things that I would ask him?

  127. Because I would love to have this moment where I just share with him

  128. that I found a passion to leave the banking business where I was before

  129. and become a pastor or to just share with him about getting married

  130. and just share with him about Christ.

  131. And so the passage that you heard in the beginning,

  132. I find it really striking because this is the passage

  133. where that exact same thing happens.

  134. In Acts 1, and you can follow along in your bulletin again

  135. if you want to look at these verses.

  136. In Acts 1, it says,

  137. In my former book, Theophilus,

  138. I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

  139. until the day he was taken up to heaven

  140. after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit

  141. to the apostles he had chosen.

  142. After his suffering, he presented himself to them

  143. and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.

  144. He appeared to them over a period of 40 days

  145. and spoke about the kingdom of God.

  146. What an amazing passage if we really see what's happening there.

  147. And let me just first put that passage in context

  148. of what we have been looking at as a church.

  149. So it says here that this is the second volume of a book.

  150. So the author is Luke.

  151. And he writes Acts, but the first one was the Gospel of Luke,

  152. which we have been studying all along.

  153. So all the events that we have been looking at

  154. over the past year and a half take place

  155. and then there are still the chapters that are still to come

  156. and then we have Acts coming.

  157. And that's where we see these first few verses

  158. starting out right away.

  159. This is the second volume he's talking about.

  160. So the events that are still coming,

  161. Jesus will continue his ministry

  162. and then he will return to Jerusalem

  163. and in Jerusalem he will be betrayed,

  164. he will be sentenced to death

  165. and he will go to the cross,

  166. nailed to the cross and he'll die.

  167. And he'll be buried.

  168. But then three days after his burial,

  169. he will rise again from the dead

  170. and appear to his disciples.

  171. And so right here in Acts 1,

  172. we find these verses where it talks about

  173. this time where Jesus rises from the dead

  174. and he appears to his disciples alive

  175. in many different settings over a period of 40 days.

  176. And I think that's remarkable.

  177. It's not like a short little encounter

  178. where you could say,

  179. was it really Jesus that I saw there?

  180. Did someone just pretend to be Jesus

  181. or did I just imagine that?

  182. It's in many different settings

  183. over a period of 40 days he appears

  184. and it's face-to-face meetings

  185. in which he talked to them

  186. about things concerning the kingdom of God.

  187. So this is, again,

  188. it's not that quick encounter.

  189. It's more like an extended dim sum meeting

  190. with Jesus or hours of talking

  191. and there's no way to get this wrong.

  192. And then it ends with

  193. that he was talking about the kingdom of God.

  194. And I think we can read over that

  195. and actually not see what he's really saying.

  196. Like, get this.

  197. Like, if I had one more day with my dead

  198. and I would sit with him,

  199. I would want to talk to him

  200. about the most important things

  201. because I don't know how long I have.

  202. I would want to make sure that, you know,

  203. I talk about all these things

  204. that have taken place

  205. and the questions that are on my heart.

  206. And here it says,

  207. Jesus decided to teach about the kingdom of God.

  208. So that's significant.

  209. It's the last teaching topic,

  210. the last instructional topic.

  211. For 40 days straight

  212. are lessons on the kingdom of God.

  213. Now, I think there's another interesting thing.

  214. When you continue reading,

  215. it doesn't say anything that he says there.

  216. Like, wouldn't you as a disciple say,

  217. oh, now he instructs us for 40 days

  218. on the kingdom of God.

  219. We have to, like, add a couple of chapters

  220. and giving you, like,

  221. discipleship manual one, two, and three

  222. on the kingdom of God

  223. because you need to know everything

  224. he talks about, right?

  225. And I think the answer is pretty simple.

  226. What Jesus is teaching to his disciples

  227. over the extended meetings,

  228. over 40 days,

  229. is nothing new.

  230. He has been teaching on the kingdom of God

  231. for three years,

  232. over and over again.

  233. And so here we find Christ

  234. just referring back to everything

  235. that he has been teaching.

  236. And now in the light of his death

  237. and resurrection,

  238. many things in the light of the kingdom of God

  239. start to make sense.

  240. And so he goes back

  241. and explains all these things again.

  242. If you have never read the Gospels

  243. in the light of the kingdom of God,

  244. let me just point out a few things

  245. that happen in the Gospels

  246. about the kingdom of God.

  247. In the Gospel of Mark,

    Mark 1:15

  248. chapter 1, verse 15,

  249. so the moment Jesus begins his ministry,

  250. the first chapter,

  251. it's actually the first thing

  252. that Jesus says in the Gospel of Mark.

  253. It says,

  254. The time has come.

  255. The kingdom of God is near.

  256. Repent and believe the good news.

  257. The first line that we hear is,

  258. the kingdom of God has come.

  259. Or if we look at other passages,

  260. like in Matthew,

  261. there it says that,

  262. that in chapter 13,

  263. that the kingdom of God

  264. is like a treasure hidden in a field.

  265. The kingdom of God is like a merchant

  266. searching for a pearl.

  267. It is like yeast.

  268. It's like a mustard seed.

  269. It's like a large net thrown into the sea

  270. and all these stories

  271. that explain the character

  272. of the kingdom of God.

  273. But I wonder,

  274. why does Jesus not say,

  275. the kingdom of God?

  276. And now here's the definition.

  277. Like write it down

  278. because you need to know

  279. what the kingdom of God is

  280. because I'll talk about it all along.

  281. So let me just give a definition

  282. about the kingdom of God.

  283. But instead,

  284. we have all these stories

  285. that talk about it.

  286. And I just wonder,

  287. what is that?

  288. This kingdom of God thing?

  289. It doesn't make sense to me.

  290. So how can we explain it

  291. and understand this?

  292. So in my enlightened modern mindset,

  293. I just want to have a definition

  294. that makes sense,

  295. that rationalizes

  296. what is the kingdom of God

  297. and give me a definition.

  298. Let me give you an analogy about it.

  299. If someone asked me,

  300. can you explain and define

  301. your wife, Katie?

  302. And then I would say,

  303. okay,

  304. the human body is made

  305. 99% of six elements,

  306. oxygen, carbon,

  307. hydrogen,

  308. nitrogen,

  309. calcium,

  310. and phosphorus.

  311. And if you want to get

  312. in a little bit more detail,

  313. another 0.85%,

  314. so altogether 99,

  315. 8.85%

  316. of every human being,

  317. the other 5%

  318. are potassium,

  319. sulfur,

  320. sodium,

  321. chlorine,

  322. and magnesium.

  323. So now,

  324. you have about

  325. a 99.85% definition,

  326. right?

  327. The reality is,

  328. it doesn't,

  329. the slightest bit,

  330. say anything

  331. about who Katie is

  332. and who she is to me.

  333. But I can tell you

  334. how she is like.

  335. I can tell

  336. and share stories with you

  337. about her steadfastness.

  338. I can share with you

  339. stories about her passion

  340. and her kindness

  341. and her love for people.

  342. And then you'll get

  343. a picture

  344. that is so much more

  345. than 99.85%

  346. of what we would hear

  347. as this definition.

  348. And I think that's exactly

  349. the kind of stories

  350. that Jesus is talking about

  351. in the kingdom of God.

  352. In Jesus,

  353. we see the kingdom of God

  354. and its reality

  355. breaking into this world.

  356. And in Jesus,

  357. we see what the kingdom of God

  358. is like.

  359. So when Jesus meets

  360. his disciples

  361. for the 40 days,

  362. he reminds them again

  363. about everything

  364. that he has been taught

  365. and he teaches them

  366. what it means

  367. in the light

  368. of the kingdom of God.

  369. Now what does that

  370. have to do with prayer?

  371. Now when everything

  372. that he has taught

  373. is now explained

  374. in the kingdom of God,

  375. if we truly gain

  376. an understanding

  377. of what the kingdom of God

  378. is like

  379. and how Christ

  380. shows in his life

  381. what the kingdom of God

  382. is like,

  383. we also will understand prayer.

  384. Let me go to Matthew 5-7.

  385. It's the Sermon on the Mount

  386. and most of you

  387. will probably be familiar

  388. with you,

  389. but let me just set

  390. the framework

  391. for those who are not.

  392. The Sermon on the Mount

  393. is the longest

  394. instructional or teaching time

  395. that we find

  396. in any of the Gospels

  397. where Jesus teaches

  398. his disciples.

  399. And so in the first verse

  400. it says,

  401. now when Jesus saw the crowd

  402. and there are like thousands

  403. of people gathered,

  404. he went up to a mountainside

  405. and he sat down

  406. and his disciples came to him

  407. and then he began

  408. to teach.

  409. And as he begins to teach,

  410. he starts out

  411. and he talks about

  412. about murder

  413. and adultery

  414. and what adultery

  415. really means

  416. and what divorce is about

  417. and what it means

  418. to love your enemies

  419. and what it means

  420. to give to the poor.

  421. And after all that,

  422. he comes to the passage

  423. in chapter 6,

  424. verse 7,

  425. and when you pray,

  426. so now he begins

  427. to teach on prayer as well,

  428. do not keep on babbling

  429. like pagans

  430. for they think

  431. that they will be heard

  432. because of their many words.

  433. Do not be like them

  434. for your father knows

  435. what you need

  436. before you ask him.

  437. This then is

  438. how you should pray.

  439. Our father in heaven,

  440. hallowed be your name,

  441. your kingdom come.

  442. You will be done

  443. on earth

  444. as it is in heaven.

  445. And then you know

  446. how the prayer continues

  447. if you have heard

  448. the Lord's Prayer

  449. and you had to recite it before.

  450. But then after that prayer lesson,

  451. he continues

  452. and then he teaches

  453. on fasting,

  454. he teaches on money,

  455. he teaches on worry,

  456. and then after all these things

  457. he teaches about

  458. sitting on that mountain

  459. in front of this big crowd,

  460. he says,

  461. for the pagans

  462. run after all these things

  463. and your heavenly father

  464. knows that you need them.

  465. But seek first

  466. his kingdom

  467. and his righteousness

  468. and all these things

  469. will be given to you

  470. as well.

  471. Now I think there are two things

  472. that really stick out to me

  473. when I relate

  474. prayer and the kingdom

  475. because it says

  476. when Jesus teaches

  477. on prayer

  478. that he instructs

  479. his followers

  480. to pray for his kingdom

  481. to come

  482. on earth

  483. and it is already

  484. in heaven.

  485. And he points out

  486. that we should first

  487. seek his kingdom

  488. and all these things

  489. will be given to us.

  490. So this is

  491. a big concept

  492. to grasp

  493. and it's so difficult

  494. for us to really

  495. gain an understanding

  496. of what this kingdom

  497. of God is like

  498. and what it really means

  499. to pray

  500. for the kingdom

  501. to break into this reality.

  502. Before I came to Hong Kong,

  503. I lived in Germany

  504. and England

  505. and the US

  506. but I had never been

  507. to Asia.

  508. And so when I first

  509. heard my call

  510. to come to Asia

  511. to Hong Kong

  512. and I had never been here

  513. I had no clue

  514. what this country

  515. would be like.

  516. I did not know anything

  517. about really the culture

  518. and the people.

  519. I did not know

  520. about the suffering

  521. and the problems

  522. and the challenges

  523. people face.

  524. So it's like

  525. when people ask me

  526. like so why are you

  527. going to Asia?

  528. Like what is it

  529. that you would tell people?

  530. I have no clue.

  531. I have never been there.

  532. There's a passage

  533. in 2 Corinthians 5

  534. that talks about

  535. being an ambassador

  536. of the kingdom of God.

  537. So if I think

  538. that I would be sent

  539. as an ambassador

  540. from the kingdom of God

  541. the first thing

  542. that comes to mind

  543. is I have never been there.

  544. Like how can I be

  545. an ambassador

  546. of this kingdom

  547. that I have never been to

  548. I have never seen it

  549. and then I'm coming here

  550. to this world

  551. to be an ambassador

  552. for the kingdom of God.

  553. Like I can be

  554. an ambassador for Germany.

  555. I can tell you all

  556. hey dim sum is great

  557. but you need to

  558. eat like pork knuckle

  559. and bratwurst

  560. and sauerkraut

  561. and you're driving

  562. actually on the wrong

  563. side of the street

  564. because the right side

  565. is the one

  566. that you should drive on

  567. because that's what we do

  568. and I can try to

  569. tell you about

  570. everything that we do

  571. in Germany

  572. and how we organize stuff

  573. and engineering

  574. and whatever

  575. but ultimately

  576. what can I tell you

  577. about the kingdom of God?

  578. What can any one of us

  579. tell anybody else

  580. about the kingdom of God?

  581. And the amazing thing

  582. for me is

  583. that the kingdom of God

  584. becomes a reality

  585. in this life

  586. because God

  587. humbled himself

  588. and stepped into this world

  589. to be the ambassador

  590. for God

  591. coming to this world

  592. and in him he says

  593. in the first line

  594. the kingdom of God

  595. has come.

  596. The kingdom of God

  597. has been breaking

  598. into the world

  599. in Christ

  600. and everything

  601. that the kingdom of God

  602. is like

  603. we have seen

  604. in the person

  605. of Jesus Christ.

  606. So as we turn

  607. through the Bible

  608. and we look at the gospels

  609. we see what the kingdom

  610. of God is like

  611. and as we continue

  612. to explore it

  613. even we have not seen

  614. the kingdom come fully yet

  615. it's come

  616. partially breaking in

  617. through Christ

  618. and here

  619. as Christ dwells in us

  620. and the kingdom dwells in us

  621. as we receive Christ

  622. we are empowered

  623. to speak

  624. as ambassadors

  625. for the kingdom of God

  626. proclaiming

  627. this very kingdom.

  628. Now

  629. I think

  630. there's a lot of

  631. theoretical concepts

  632. that we're trying

  633. to wrap our minds around

  634. but how does this

  635. practically look like?

  636. and so I want to share

  637. two stories with you

  638. about how that became

  639. true in my life

  640. after I became a Christian.

  641. It was about three months

  642. after turning my life

  643. to Christ

  644. I was 23

  645. in the year 2000

  646. and I was studying

  647. business at the time

  648. and I had been growing

  649. a lot in my faith

  650. but

  651. there were still

  652. some things in my life

  653. that I really hadn't

  654. reconciled

  655. with the kingdom of God.

  656. When I was sitting

  657. in my classroom

  658. I was heavily investing

  659. into emerging markets

  660. and very risky stocks

  661. so I would sit

  662. in my classroom

  663. and check

  664. what the stock exchange

  665. was doing

  666. and I would sometimes

  667. walk out of the classroom

  668. just making a quick deal

  669. and calling back

  670. to the bank

  671. and that was just my day.

  672. When I woke up

  673. I would check

  674. the stock markets

  675. when I would go back

  676. I would check

  677. the stock markets

  678. make sure that I know

  679. what's happening

  680. not just in Germany

  681. but in America

  682. and in Japan

  683. and so

  684. you just had to be

  685. up to date

  686. and that's just

  687. what you had to do

  688. in the role

  689. that I had before.

  690. Now I'd become a Christian

  691. and then one morning

  692. I woke up

  693. and as I usually did

  694. I would get on the computer

  695. and I would check

  696. what the markets had done

  697. while I was asleep

  698. and I spent about an hour

  699. and after I was caught up

  700. in making sure

  701. that I didn't have to

  702. sell something real quick

  703. or buy something real quick

  704. I went to my Bible

  705. and sat down

  706. and started my prayer time

  707. with God.

  708. And as I was praying

  709. and trying to

  710. just really see

  711. what my life was like

  712. with God

  713. it just hit me

  714. that I felt very distant

  715. from Him

  716. in that morning.

  717. And I realized

  718. that there was a kingdom

  719. that I was serving

  720. and I'd been serving

  721. from the moment

  722. that I got up

  723. that had nothing to do

  724. with the kingdom of God.

  725. But that my mind

  726. was wrapped up

  727. in serving

  728. the finances

  729. my reputation

  730. my status

  731. that came out

  732. of being connected

  733. with the financial world.

  734. As I was praying

  735. that morning

  736. and I really seek

  737. God's heart

  738. I realized

  739. it was somewhat

  740. like a gambling addiction

  741. to me

  742. and that day

  743. I made a decision

  744. I went to the bank

  745. I sold all my investments

  746. and don't ask me

  747. what my colleagues said

  748. that had seen me

  749. for three years

  750. day trading basically.

  751. I sold everything

  752. and put all my money

  753. in a savings account.

  754. Don't hear me say

  755. that I'm saying

  756. that you cannot invest

  757. and don't feel

  758. like you need

  759. to run off

  760. and sell everything

  761. that you have

  762. and put it

  763. in something secure

  764. because I think

  765. even the illusion

  766. of security

  767. in a savings account

  768. you all know about it

  769. in the current

  770. market situation.

  771. That's not what

  772. it is about.

  773. I think it is about

  774. that as you're seeking

  775. in your heart

  776. what it means

  777. for the kingdom of God

  778. to become true

  779. in your life

  780. you will see

  781. where you're serving

  782. your idols

  783. where you are

  784. serving kingdoms

  785. that have nothing

  786. to do with the values

  787. of God.

  788. Now I want to tell you

  789. a second story

  790. that happened

  791. about two years later

  792. in my journey

  793. through business school

  794. I actually took

  795. another turn

  796. and God called me

  797. into ministry

  798. and so I went

  799. to seminary

  800. in the US

  801. and in my first

  802. year in seminary

  803. I started to do

  804. some work

  805. in an internet ministry

  806. so I would write

  807. articles about

  808. the Christian faith

  809. for this internet forum

  810. on a German website

  811. and after a few weeks

  812. of doing that

  813. I noticed this one guy

  814. his name was Simon

  815. he was posting

  816. these things

  817. and he was really rude

  818. he called himself

  819. a Satanist

  820. and basically told

  821. everybody that

  822. they are stupid

  823. to believe in God

  824. and he used a lot

  825. of other words

  826. so he said

  827. Christians are stupid

  828. basically

  829. and somehow

  830. I began praying

  831. for him

  832. and I prayed

  833. for him

  834. to see the kingdom

  835. of God

  836. to break

  837. into his life

  838. and a few weeks

  839. into this time

  840. we started

  841. to meet in a chat room

  842. and we started talking

  843. and step by step

  844. I learned his story

  845. and he shared his story

  846. of how when he was

  847. two years

  848. his father

  849. had left the family

  850. that his mom

  851. is extremely abusive

  852. to him

  853. that his first

  854. childhood memory

  855. was to be taken

  856. and thrown on the wall

  857. by his mom

  858. and so as we were

  859. talking

  860. and sharing

  861. and wrestling

  862. and arguing

  863. after a few weeks

  864. there was this one moment

  865. where we talked

  866. about prayer

  867. and in his

  868. very provocative way

  869. he just said

  870. why do you pray

  871. to dust

  872. it's so ridiculous

  873. like all this

  874. praying thing

  875. it's so stupid

  876. it's scientifically

  877. disproven

  878. and as he was

  879. talking and talking

  880. I just kind of

  881. lost my patience

  882. after all that

  883. and I said

  884. who are you

  885. to tell me that

  886. you have no experience

  887. about prayer

  888. if you would go

  889. and say

  890. okay for the next months

  891. I would pray

  892. I would honestly

  893. like sincerely

  894. seek out God

  895. and every day

  896. I would look for God

  897. and then after months

  898. you would say

  899. nothing happened

  900. then you could tell me

  901. out of your experience

  902. prayer doesn't work

  903. there's no power

  904. in prayer at all

  905. and God doesn't exist

  906. but if you have

  907. never even tried it

  908. so don't talk to me

  909. like you know anything

  910. and I took a breath

  911. and he says

  912. okay

  913. what do you mean

  914. okay I'll do it

  915. and so

  916. he began to pray

  917. and the following months

  918. completely turned

  919. around his life

  920. one day

  921. when he was at home

  922. and his mom came back

  923. and he was praying

  924. God if you're real

  925. then change my life

  926. and somehow

  927. he found the confidence

  928. and he said to his mom

  929. mom

  930. for 15 years

  931. you have been beating me

  932. all the time

  933. and I don't understand it

  934. why do you do this

  935. his mom breaks down

  936. in tears

  937. and says

  938. when your father left me

  939. I felt so overwhelmed

  940. I want to be a good mom

  941. I just don't know

  942. what I can do

  943. I really don't want to beat you

  944. I just don't know

  945. what else to do

  946. up to this point

  947. he actually never referred

  948. to his mom as mom

  949. he referred to her as it

  950. he said

  951. I don't think

  952. she is a person

  953. so I'm just using

  954. it for her

  955. that day

  956. he called me

  957. and he said

  958. I think I reconciled

  959. my relationship

  960. with my mom

  961. I've never understood

  962. her struggles

  963. in the time also

  964. his depression

  965. started to lift

  966. and he started to

  967. find more hope

  968. in his life

  969. and then finally

  970. he decided

  971. okay I'll go to church

  972. and I see what all

  973. this whole Christian

  974. thing is about

  975. so I connected him

  976. with the church

  977. I just looked about

  978. on the internet

  979. and so he went

  980. and he sat down

  981. so this guy

  982. sits next to him

  983. and says

  984. oh hey

  985. I've never seen you here

  986. are you new here

  987. and in his direct way

  988. he says

  989. yes I'm new

  990. I'm a satanist

  991. but he was not

  992. prepared for the response

  993. because the guy said

  994. cool

  995. I was a satanist too

  996. but now I'm leading

  997. a bible study

  998. you want to come

  999. this week

1000. to make this story short

  1001. a month later

  1002. Simon gave his life

  1003. to Christ

  1004. the same summer

  1005. I flew to Bavaria

  1006. to baptize him

  1007. in the Donjub River

  1008. and a year later

1009. I flew back to Bavaria

  1010. to see him baptize

  1011. his best friend

  1012. and brother

  1013. the kingdom of God

  1014. breaking into

  1015. our lives

  1016. restoring lives

  1017. everything being made

  1018. new and whole

1019. this is what the kingdom

  1020. of God is like

1021. so what does it mean

  1022. for our prayer life

1023. what is your prayer life

  1024. centered on

  1025. do you pray

  1026. with the kingdom centeredness

1027. that the kingdom of God

  1028. would break

  1029. break into your life

1030. I think there are prayers

  1031. that we can pray

1032. where we have to identify

  1033. the motive behind

  1034. how we pray

  1035. and why we pray

  1036. like let's think about

1037. prayers that have to do

  1038. with your job

  1039. or your money

  1040. or your studies

  1041. in Hong Kong U

  1042. or the universities

  1043. around here

  1044. how do you pray

  1045. do you pray

  1046. like God

1047. this exam is really important

  1048. and this job

  1049. I really need it

  1050. or this job

  1051. is really bad

  1052. can you just change

  1053. my boss

  1054. now there's nothing wrong

  1055. with praying for jobs

  1056. and for your exams

1057. but we want to look

  1058. into the motives

  1059. what are the motives

  1060. behind why we pray

1061. and what we pray for

1062. you can pray for your job

  1063. or your exam

  1064. saying

  1065. God I actually have

  1066. stepped in right into

  1067. serving the idols

  1068. of this world

1069. so I want you to

  1070. give me this job

  1071. or help me succeed

  1072. in this exam

  1073. because

  1074. when I have

  1075. success in this exam

  1076. and in this studies

1077. then I will get a good job

  1078. and when I have

  1079. this good job

  1080. then I'll have

  1081. a lot of money

  1082. and when I have

  1083. a lot of money

  1084. then I can actually

  1085. provide security

  1086. for myself

  1087. and you suddenly

  1088. realize that

1089. every step of the way

  1090. has been serving

  1091. your idols

  1092. from the beginning

  1093. or you can pray

  1094. God

  1095. I'm laying it all

  1096. down to you

  1097. you have given me

  1098. gifts

  1099. you have given me

  1100. the character

  1101. you have given me

  1102. this life

1103. and I want to use it

  1104. in the best way

  1105. to glorify you

  1106. and whether it's

  1107. this job

  1108. or this exam

  1109. my studies

1110. I just want to do

1111. my best to glorify you

1112. and bring honor to you

  1113. and as you begin

1114. to pray for your jobs

  1115. and for your studies

  1116. I think the way

  1117. that it is about

  1118. bringing glory to God

  1119. and bringing the kingdom

  1120. about in this world

  1121. is a completely

  1122. different mindset

  1123. so as you pray

  1124. about these things

  1125. where are you

  1126. with that

  1127. where are the idols

  1128. that have been

  1129. crawling into your

  1130. prayer life

  1131. and dominated

  1132. like think about

  1133. your relationships

  1134. your marriages

  1135. the people

  1136. that you're looking for

1137. as you want to get married

  1138. your sexuality

1139. do you have a kingdom

  1140. centeredness

  1141. in your prayers

  1142. or do you pray

  1143. serving your idols

  1144. if you're struggling

  1145. with your marriages

  1146. are you looking for

  1147. the kingdom centeredness

  1148. that God wants

  1149. to restore

  1150. and heal

  1151. and reconcile

  1152. or again

  1153. are you saying

  1154. just change my spouse

1155. or get me out of this

  1156. what is really

  1157. the motive behind

1158. the things we pray for

  1159. do you pray

  1160. for trustworthiness

  1161. integrity

  1162. faithfulness

  1163. in your sexuality

  1164. do you pray

  1165. for righteousness

  1166. in your relationships

  1167. because this

  1168. is what we hear

  1169. Christ talk about

  1170. in the values

  1171. of the kingdom

  1172. so as we look

  1173. into the motives

  1174. and kingdom centeredness

  1175. as a guide

  1176. to identify

  1177. what the motives

1178. are in our prayer lives

  1179. there's another story

1180. that comes to my mind

1181. that I want to close with

  1182. the story is about

  1183. Ashley

  1184. and many of you

  1185. know her

  1186. and have been

  1187. to the funeral

1188. just a short while ago

  1189. if you don't know

  1190. who Ashley is

  1191. she is

  1192. a young girl

  1193. of 26

  1194. in our sister church

  1195. at Island ECC

1196. and she just passed away

1197. and I have never known her

  1198. but what I've heard

  1199. about her

  1200. amazed me

  1201. everybody that has

  1202. talked to me

  1203. over the last weeks

  1204. about her

  1205. pointed me

  1206. to the reality

  1207. that she had hope

  1208. in the kingdom

  1209. that is to come

  1210. that she didn't complain

1211. but even in her suffering

  1212. that she was pointing

  1213. people to the hope

  1214. that she had

  1215. in restoration

  1216. and redemption

  1217. that everything

  1218. would one day

  1219. be made new

  1220. so people that came

  1221. in touch with her

1222. that did not know Christ

1223. and that did not know

1224. the hope of that kingdom

  1225. that is breaking

  1226. into this reality

  1227. they would see it

  1228. in her life

  1229. now I didn't know her

  1230. but there's another guy

  1231. that when I heard

  1232. the stories about her

1233. that came to my mind

  1234. about my life

  1235. someone that was

  1236. really close to me

1237. his name was Kyle Lake

1238. and Kyle was the pastor

  1239. of University Baptist Church

  1240. in Waco

  1241. when I studied

  1242. in the US

  1243. I went there

  1244. some people know it

  1245. because that's

  1246. David Crowder's church

  1247. in Waco

1248. and so Kyle was 32

1249. and he had three little kids

1250. and he had an extraordinary gift

  1251. just bringing the kingdom

  1252. of God about

1253. UBC was a melting pot

  1254. of about 800 to 1,000

  1255. college students

  1256. most of them

  1257. very broken

  1258. and hurt

  1259. in their lives

  1260. and they found

  1261. a lot of restoration

  1262. finding this community there

1263. and when they got in touch

  1264. with Kyle's life

  1265. they were infected

  1266. by his passion

  1267. for the kingdom

  1268. and the way

  1269. that he longed

1270. for lives to be restored

  1271. and one day

  1272. in a church service

  1273. Kyle got ready

  1274. to baptize

  1275. the young girl

  1276. and baptism

  1277. being that sign

  1278. of new life

  1279. and restoration

  1280. in Christ as well

1281. he steps into the baptistry

  1282. and as he steps

  1283. into the baptistry

1284. he reaches for the microphone

  1285. and the microphone

  1286. shoots to his breast

  1287. and he's electrocuted

1288. in front of 1,000 college students

1289. and as we were seeing

  1290. what is happening

  1291. and the drummer

  1292. jumps out

  1293. and pulls him out

  1294. of the baptistry

  1295. but on the way

  1296. to the hospital

  1297. Kyle died

  1298. Jesus said that

  1299. he would make

  1300. this world new

  1301. and that he came

  1302. so that we would

  1303. experience life

  1304. in all its fullness

  1305. God became flesh

  1306. and lived among us

1307. so that we could taste

1308. and see how he is like

  1309. and in Christ

  1310. we see the kingdom

  1311. break into

  1312. the here

  1313. and now

  1314. but not everything

  1315. that we will experience

  1316. in this life

  1317. will make sense

  1318. not everything

  1319. will be a reflection

  1320. of this kingdom

1321. that is still to come

  1322. so much around us

  1323. and in us

  1324. is shattered

  1325. and broken

  1326. and hurting

  1327. but in Christ

  1328. we find peace

  1329. we find peace

  1330. about his grace

  1331. and his forgiveness

  1332. and we find hope

  1333. in the kingdom

  1334. that is

  1335. beginning to become

  1336. a reality

  1337. more and more

  1338. in this world

  1339. but one day

  1340. will restore it

  1341. in his coming again

1342. so I want to close today

1343. and I want to share

  1344. a few lines of a sermon

1345. it was Kyle's last sermon

1346. that he never was able

  1347. to preach

  1348. it was the papers

  1349. that were laying

  1350. on the pulpit

  1351. when he died

  1352. and I hope today

  1353. even his words

  1354. will bring

  1355. you hope

  1356. about what it means

  1357. to live life

  1358. to the fullest

  1359. to live a life

  1360. that would be

  1361. a symbol

  1362. of the kingdom

  1363. of God

  1364. coming about

  1365. in your lives

  1366. and in the lives

  1367. around you

  1368. so here's

  1369. how his sermon

  1370. ended

  1371. live

  1372. live

  1373. and live well

  1374. breathe

  1375. breathe in

  1376. and breathe deeply

  1377. be present

  1378. do not be past

  1379. do not be future

  1380. be now

  1381. on a crystal clear

  1382. breathy

  1383. 70 degree day

  1384. roll down the window

  1385. and feel

  1386. the wind

  1387. against your skin

  1388. feel the warmth

  1389. of the sun

  1390. if you run

  1391. then allow

  1392. these first few breaths

1393. of a cool autumn day

  1394. to freeze your lungs

1395. and do not just be alarmed

  1396. be alive

  1397. get knee deep

  1398. in a novel

1399. and lose track of time

  1400. and if you bike

  1401. then pedal hard

  1402. and if you crash

  1403. then crash well

  1404. feel the satisfaction

  1405. of a job

  1406. well done

  1407. a paper well written

  1408. a project

  1409. thoroughly completed

  1410. a play well performed

  1411. and if you have

  1412. recently experienced loss

  1413. then grieve

  1414. and grieve

  1415. well

  1416. at the table

  1417. with friends

  1418. and family

  1419. laugh

  1420. if you are eating

  1421. and laughing

  1422. at the same time

  1423. then might

  1424. might well

  1425. then might as well

  1426. laugh

  1427. until you puke

  1428. and if you eat

  1429. then smell

  1430. and taste

  1431. taste every ounce

  1432. of flavor

  1433. taste every ounce

  1434. of friendship

  1435. taste every ounce

  1436. of life

  1437. because it is most

  1438. definitely

  1439. a gift

  1440. let's pray

  1441. father

  1442. today

  1443. as we come

  1444. before you

  1445. we pray

  1446. that

  1447. every ounce

  1448. of the kingdom

  1449. would break

  1450. into this world

  1451. and into our lives

  1452. that every ounce

  1453. of Christ

  1454. is what we would

  1455. taste

  1456. as we share

  1457. life together

  1458. father

  1459. as we think

  1460. about our own

  1461. prayer life

  1462. we confess

  1463. that so many times

  1464. we are centered

  1465. on our idols

  1466. and we just want

  1467. you to serve them

  1468. and we just

  1469. lose

  1470. you in it all

  1471. so we just pray

  1472. that you would again

  1473. center us

  1474. on your kingdom

  1475. of wholeness

  1476. and perfectness

  1477. and restoration

  1478. and beauty

  1479. and grace

  1480. and love

  1481. and all the things

  1482. that you are like

  1483. father

  1484. and in it all

  1485. we realize

  1486. that so many times

1487. we fall short of this

  1488. and so we're just

  1489. also grateful

  1490. for the peace

  1491. we have

  1492. that if we don't

  1493. have our prayer life

  1494. right

  1495. that you are

  1496. the father

  1497. that is not so

  1498. concerned about

  1499. us having the

  1500. questions wrong

  1501. and saying stupid

  1502. things

  1503. but that you

  1504. care so much

  1505. more about

  1506. a relationship

  1507. with us

  1508. so that wherever

  1509. we are

  1510. in our prayer life

  1511. that you

  1512. love us deeply

  1513. and that you

  1514. care more about

  1515. that relationship

  1516. with us

  1517. than anything else

  1518. and we thank

  1519. you that

  1520. 2,000 years ago

  1521. you stepped

  1522. into this world

  1523. dying on the cross

  1524. as a symbol

  1525. of your kingdom

  1526. breaking into

  1527. this reality

  1528. that the forgiveness

  1529. for our sins

1530. that comes to the cross

  1531. restores us

  1532. and points us

  1533. to redemption

  1534. in you

  1535. and we pray

  1536. that in this community

  1537. and in every life

  1538. here today

  1539. that that would be

  1540. a reality

  1541. and we pray this

  1542. in Christ's name

  1543. Amen
