  1. The Bible reading today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 24.

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. But on the first day of the week, at early dawn,

  4. they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.

  5. And they found a stone rolled away from the tomb.

  6. But when they entered, they did not find the body of Lord Jesus.

  7. While they were perplexed about this,

  8. behold, two men suddenly stood near them in dazzling clothing.

  9. And as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground,

  10. the man said to them,

  11. Why do you seek the living one among the dead?

  12. He is not here, but he has risen.

  13. Remember how he spoke to you while he was still in Galilee,

  14. saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men,

  15. and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

  16. And they remembered his words,

  17. and returned from the tomb,

  18. and reported all these things to the eleven,

  19. and to all the rest.

  20. Now they were Mary Magdalene,

  21. and Joanna,

  22. and Mary, the mother of James.

  23. Also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles.

  24. But these words appeared to them as nonsense,

  25. and they would not believe them.

  26. In 1 Corinthians 15,

  27. the apostle Paul later wrote,

  28. For I delivered to you,

  29. as of your first importance,

  30. what I also received,

  31. that Christ died for our sins,

  32. according to the scriptures,

  33. and that he was buried,

  34. and that he was raised on the third day,

  35. according to the scriptures,

  36. and that he appeared to Cephas,

  37. 10 to the 12.

  38. After that,

  39. he appeared to more than 500 brethren at one time,

  40. most of whom remain until now,

  41. but some have fallen asleep.

  42. Then he appeared to James,

  43. then to all the apostles,

  44. and last of all,

  45. as the one untimely born,

  46. he appeared to me also.

  47. I say to you,

  48. for if the dead are not raised,

  49. not even Christ has been raised,

  50. and if Christ has not been raised,

  51. your faith is worthless.

  52. You are still in your sins.

  53. Then those who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

  54. If we have hoped in Christ in this life only,

  55. we are of all men most to be pitted.

  56. If the dead are not raised,

  57. let us eat and drink,

  58. for tomorrow we die.

  59. This is the reading of God's word.

  60. One of the neat things about being on a journey together

  61. is you see God change people's lives

  62. and work into people's lives

  63. and move them and make them different.

  64. I get to see those things happen in couples

  65. and in individuals and in kiddos.

  66. As we think about Easter and hope,

  67. I asked Kelvin and Cindy,

  68. who have been a part of Watermark

  69. since we started dreaming about it,

  70. maybe two or three years ago.

  71. They were in our community group

  72. at our sister church when we were there at Island.

  73. Cindy is a part-time volunteer worker,

  74. puts up with the office,

  75. and Kelvin is on the transition oversight board

  76. that oversees all the money and things like that.

  77. I've asked them to come up,

  78. and we're just going to ask them some questions,

  79. and I promise not to embarrass them too much.

  80. Hey, guys.

  81. It might be easier taking it sitting down.

  82. Okay, so I have to ask the first question to Cindy,

  83. and this is unscripted totally,

  84. but as you know, in our church office,

  85. everyone gave up cigarettes before they joined staff.

  86. So at least it seems like everyone did.

  87. So I just wanted to see how many packs did you smoke a day.

  88. I used to.

  89. Well, hopefully you don't do that anymore.

  90. Well, okay.

  91. So, yeah, you can get me later.

  92. Guys, I just wanted you to share,

  93. can you maybe introduce yourselves

  94. to those people who are seeing you for the first time here

  95. and just share a little bit about who you guys are.

  96. Okay, I'm Kelvin, and this is Cindy.

  97. Basically, we came to, we were born in Hong Kong.

  98. We were both born here,

  99. and our families moved to Australia when we were still kids.

  100. And that's, you know, where we became Christians in our teenage years,

  101. and then later on we met each other during university.

  102. And the Lord has blessed us with two beautiful girls,

  103. Esther and Harley.

  104. And, yeah, and, you know, and...

  105. Just getting that shot in you.

  106. Did I get that photo in there?

  107. Right, yeah, yeah.

  108. It's very important.

  109. It's all about photos.

  110. Yeah, and we had our kids.

  111. And then five years ago we came back to Hong Kong.

  112. A job back then brought me here.

  113. And back then we found a church to attend.

  114. And for, you know, for quite a while we were attending a church,

  115. literally just attending a church.

  116. We'd never volunteered to help with anything.

  117. We'd never joined a community group.

  118. And then we realized that our faith and our spiritual lives

  119. were just going downhill.

  120. We're not growing.

  121. And so Cindy and I prayed for a community group.

  122. And behold, you know, we found Tobin's

  123. because his group actually allowed kids.

  124. And then we had kids.

  125. And back then everything was too hard.

  126. You know, we had young kids,

  127. and it was just way too hard for anything.

  128. And that's, you know,

  129. and that's when we got to know Tobin a bit.

  130. And after a year or so,

  131. we were called to consider, you know,

  132. be involved in planning a church

  133. at a place called Area 15.

  134. And for those of you who didn't know,

  135. that is like the reverse of Area 51.

  136. And that's where we are today now.

  137. And that was the name that we took before Watermark came about.

  138. And as Tobin mentioned,

  139. Cindy now works part-time as a finance manager

  140. for the Watermark office.

  141. And I mainly serve with the worship team

  142. and take a few pictures.

  143. And Albert's part-time today.

  144. Cool.

  145. Yeah.

  146. So as you've been on this journey

  147. and you're learning,

  148. and I know that there are some very difficult times

  149. in transitioning over.

  150. We all had kids who loved where we were at.

  151. And there's all these tensions and those things.

  152. But in the midst of all this time,

  153. what would you say are some of the things that God's been teaching you

  154. or you've been learning?

  155. God's really been encouraging me so much

  156. by, first of all, letting me work at Watermark.

  157. The people there have taught me so much

  158. and they've really encouraged me.

  159. And then God's been changing my heart.

  160. This is the Australian school system, right?

  161. You just write it right down there.

  162. You just kind of read it off your palm.

  163. God's been really changing my heart.

  164. And it started during a meeting

  165. when my boss told me to share my testimony

  166. with one to three people a week.

  167. And I thought it was impossible.

  168. Nobody could do that continuously.

  169. And then I haven't shared my testimony

  170. with anybody for years at that point.

  171. And I thought my role as a Christian

  172. was just to bring people to church

  173. and you would do the magic

  174. and they would love God somehow.

  175. And so...

  176. Yes, and then...

  177. But I thought,

  178. because God loves me so much

  179. that Jesus,

  180. He would let Jesus die on the cross for me.

  181. Why shouldn't I share my testimony?

  182. And why can't I?

  183. Jesus died on the cross.

  184. I'm not going to die by sharing my testimony.

  185. I need to die of embarrassment.

  186. So, you know, that was the case.

  187. So God's changed my heart

  188. to be a bit more courageous,

  189. especially on stage as well.

  190. Eric stopped laughing.

  191. I'm so scared.

  192. So I thought of people who I've met,

  193. who I meet during the week,

  194. prayed for opportunities to talk to people

  195. about my testimony

  196. and was mindful of people who I could talk to.

  197. And it started off with that.

  198. And it actually started off

  199. when I was having a facial.

  200. I couldn't see them.

  201. They couldn't really see me.

  202. And so it made it easier.

  203. Shared my testimony with my beautician.

  204. Getting my hair done.

  205. They love to talk.

  206. And then, so I'm very thankful

  207. that God's changed my heart

  208. to want to share my testimony now.

  209. Yeah.

  210. So as you guys think about, like,

  211. Easter being hope

  212. and what that means for you as a family

  213. and what God's been teaching

  214. and doing in your life,

  215. because some really neat things have happened.

  216. So what would you say

  217. that that idea of hope translates now

  218. for you guys?

  219. What's God doing?

  220. Yeah, I've seen some amazing changes

  221. happening in our families.

  222. I think one of the things that happened

  223. not so long ago was,

  224. it's a story behind this.

  225. Basically, for many,

  226. for the whole year, actually,

  227. when we have communion here,

  228. you know, our six-year-old daughter

  229. would ask us, you know,

  230. why can't she have communion,

  231. you know, have the cookie

  232. and the drink?

  233. And we would explain to her that,

  234. no, no, no, you can't do that.

  235. And she goes, but I love God, you know.

  236. And then we're like, no, no, no,

  237. you can't do that.

  238. But then we would use it as a teaching time

  239. and to share with her

  240. what the bread was about

  241. and what the cup was about.

  242. And so, you know,

  243. she just kept asking

  244. and we kept sharing.

  245. And she always said,

  246. oh, Daddy, I want to eat the biscuit,

  247. you know, I want to take a drink.

  248. And then we would just, you know,

  249. we tried to explain to her that,

  250. you know,

  251. the biscuit is actually Christ's body.

  252. It was broken for us.

  253. And the cup was representative

  254. of Christ's blood

  255. was spilled for our sins.

  256. And then we also share with her,

  257. not expecting that she'd understand it all,

  258. that, you know,

  259. the Bible warns us

  260. that if we don't truly trust in God

  261. and we take the cup and the bread,

  262. we would be eating and drinking

  263. of our own sins,

  264. which is very bad.

  265. You know, so we try to explain that to her

  266. and then she somehow just,

  267. you know,

  268. a bit disappointed

  269. and we go on.

  270. But then on the 26th of February,

  271. which is not so long ago,

  272. Cindy was spending time

  273. with her during communion

  274. and she asked her,

  275. you know,

  276. would you like to accept Christ?

  277. And she basically said,

  278. yeah, I would like to do that.

  279. And then we also always check and verify,

  280. you know,

  281. whether it was authentic, right?

  282. And then Cindy would ask,

  283. you know,

  284. so why, you know?

  285. And Esther said,

  286. I want to trust in God.

  287. This is from a six-year-old.

  288. And so we could no longer doubt

  289. and then Cindy basically just prayed with her

  290. during the communion time.

  291. And then a few days later,

  292. you know,

  293. we checked on her again

  294. and then I asked her,

  295. Esther,

  296. now that you've prayed

  297. and accepted Christ into your life,

  298. how do you feel?

  299. And then she said,

  300. we were just walking along the road

  301. and she said,

  302. Daddy,

  303. I feel like a new person.

  304. And it was like,

  305. well,

  306. okay,

  307. a new person.

  308. All right,

  309. do they teach that in Sunday school here?

  310. But anyway,

  311. from that,

  312. we've seen really dramatic changes in her life.

  313. Before,

  314. you'd notice that we sit on the second row here.

  315. You took my seat there,

  316. by the way.

  317. We sit there

  318. and then she used to,

  319. you know,

  320. just stand there for weeks and months

  321. and she would not sing a word of worship

  322. in the morning.

  323. She'd just be standing there

  324. and just,

  325. you know,

  326. looking around,

  327. you know,

  328. giving me a hug,

  329. you know,

  330. sitting down,

  331. being a bit bored.

  332. But now,

  333. she would actually ask us,

  334. you know,

  335. to join the Easter choir

  336. and sing for us in worship.

  337. And during the school interview,

  338. she would ask,

  339. you know,

  340. at my birthday party,

  341. did we sing song and worship God?

  342. Obviously,

  343. we didn't,

  344. but,

  345. you know,

  346. we sang happy birthday,

  347. right?

  348. Yeah,

  349. but unfortunately,

  350. she couldn't be here today

  351. because she got sick.

  352. But she actually wanted to come up

  353. and share with you guys

  354. how she feels.

  355. Wow,

  356. that's great.

  357. That's great.

  358. That makes it,

  359. I remember that first,

  360. the next first communion,

  361. when you guys took communion as a family

  362. and she took it for the first time,

  363. that was amazing.

  364. And especially,

  365. and just to see her face

  366. and all that.

  367. And I just thought,

  368. I think that's why God has the church here,

  369. right?

  370. The church is here to reach people

  371. who don't know him

  372. and to present the love of Christ

  373. and to help them take the next step

  374. in their spiritual journey.

  375. I want to pray with you guys

  376. and just pray for Holly

  377. and now pray for Holly

  378. and thank God for Esther and her life.

  379. Can we do that?

  380. Let's pray together.

  381. Well,

  382. we thank you for this day.

  383. We thank you for Kelvin and Cindy

  384. and just even as you are

  385. knitting them together

  386. as husband and wife

  387. and as they walk with you.

  388. Father,

  389. we just thank you for the mercy

  390. and grace that you've poured out upon them.

  391. We pray for their family

  392. and for their marriage

  393. that they would just continue

  394. to seek you

  395. and trust you

  396. for your goodness.

  397. And Father,

  398. we just praise

  399. the amazing transformation

  400. that happened in Esther.

  401. We just thank you

  402. that you worked in her heart,

  403. in her eyes,

  404. and in her mind.

  405. And we pray,

  406. Lord,

  407. that you would help us

  408. as a church

  409. to be encouraging to her,

  410. to come alongside of her,

  411. and to instruct her

  412. about your son,

  413. Jesus Christ.

  414. And Father,

  415. we pray for Holly

  416. that she would come to know you

  417. at an early age

  418. and that she would do

  419. mighty things for your kingdom.

  420. So Father,

  421. we just thank you

  422. for this family

  423. and I know there are

  424. countless families

  425. like that in here right now

  426. and throughout this Area 15.

  427. We pray,

  428. Lord,

  429. that they would also have

  430. these stories of transformation

  431. and come to know you.

  432. And we pray these things

  433. for your son Jesus' name.

  434. Amen.

  435. Thanks, guys.

  436. Thanks.

  437. Okay,

  438. so you gotta be careful

  439. what the kids learn

  440. when you're teaching them,

  441. right?

  442. Especially,

  443. I don't know what kind

  444. of underwear Jesus wore.

  445. Linen, I guess,

  446. or something like that.

  447. Let me see if I can

  448. get this up here.

  449. How you guys doing?

  450. Okay,

  451. well,

  452. I feel like after the video

  453. I can just stop

  454. and do nothing

  455. because that's all

  456. you need to know.

  457. Jesus rose from the dead

  458. and he loves us.

  459. Easter,

  460. for me,

  461. is an amazing time.

  462. I didn't grow up

  463. in a family

  464. that were churchgoers.

  465. We would be called,

  466. I guess today,

  467. we'd call us CEOs,

  468. Christmas and Easter

  469. only people.

  470. And so we were CEOs

  471. and the thing

  472. that I realized

  473. about Easter

  474. was a couple things.

  475. One is,

  476. you always go to church

  477. on Easter.

  478. The second thing

  479. that we were told

  480. is everybody gets

  481. new clothes.

  482. So we always got

  483. a new set of outfit

  484. for Easter

  485. and we always

  486. had to be nice

  487. when we went

  488. to church

  489. on Easter.

  490. We didn't quite

  491. understand

  492. the whole Easter bunny

  493. thing or what Easter

  494. was about,

  495. but one of the things

  496. I remember

  497. even as a young kid

  498. on a military base

  499. was that Easter

  500. was about

  501. new beginnings

  502. and hope.

  503. The Easter

  504. was about hope.

  505. And I've been thinking

  506. about that a lot

  507. just for this time

  508. and for this service here,

  509. praying about

  510. what can I share

  511. that deals with hope

  512. in our life?

  513. Because I realize

  514. that all of us

  515. are at different stages

  516. in our journey.

  517. All of us are

  518. dealing with different things

  519. in our life.

  520. All of us

  521. need a different type

  522. of hope

  523. in some ways,

  524. but in some ways

  525. we need the same

  526. type of hope.

  527. And so the question

  528. I want to ask you

  529. is what do you hope in?

  530. If we were having

  531. a Starbucks cup of coffee

  532. and we were just

  533. by each other

  534. and I were to ask you

  535. a question,

  536. what do you hope in

  537. right now?

  538. What is there

  539. in your life

  540. that if was taken away

  541. your life would fall apart?

  542. your wife,

  543. your husband,

  544. your kids,

  545. your job,

  546. your money,

  547. your title,

  548. your integrity,

  549. your health?

  550. What is it

  551. that you ultimately hope in

  552. that if this thing

  553. were to be removed

  554. that you would fall apart

  555. and I went on

  556. this kind of quest

  557. and I was asking people

  558. the last couple weeks

  559. what is it

  560. that they hoped in

  561. and I asked a friend

  562. who I've been developing

  563. a relationship

  564. with a long time.

  565. He's not here

  566. right now.

  567. He said he would

  568. never come to church.

  569. He's a rugby player.

  570. I don't quite understand

  571. what being a rugby player

  572. and never coming to church

  573. has to do with anything.

  574. But as we talked about hope

  575. and what we hope in,

  576. he gave an answer

  577. that I'd never heard before

  578. and it really disturbed me.

  579. I didn't really know

  580. how to answer it

  581. and I asked him

  582. what do you hope in

  583. and he looked at me

  584. squarely in the face

  585. and he said nothing.

  586. And I looked at him

  587. and I was like,

  588. what?

  589. And he said nothing.

  590. I hope

  591. in nothing.

  592. And then he went on

  593. to explain to me

  594. his world view.

  595. He said basically

  596. that this world

  597. began with nothing

  598. and that when he dies

  599. there will be nothing.

  600. And as he lives life

  601. he says that his life

  602. basically exists

  603. between the nothings.

  604. I kind of went,

  605. whoa!

  606. Somebody's been reading

  607. a lot of French

  608. and German philosophers here.

  609. But I was intense.

  610. I actually didn't really know

  611. what to say

  612. when he said that.

  613. And so for some reason

  614. in my head

  615. I just asked him

  616. this question

  617. because sometimes

  618. when people talk

  619. about their philosophy

  620. then it's different

  621. when it gets down

  622. into their life.

  623. And I asked him,

  624. well how's that going for you?

  625. Is that working?

  626. And he got really quiet.

  627. And I think maybe

  628. in one of the few

  629. honest moments

  630. in his life

  631. he said,

  632. no.

  633. Not too good.

  634. I'm lonely

  635. and I fear

  636. the nothingness.

  637. First time I ever

  638. heard somebody say that.

  639. I fear

  640. the nothingness.

  641. I fear the nothingness

  642. when I consider

  643. my past

  644. and all the people

  645. I've hurt

  646. and wronged.

  647. And I wonder

  648. if there's a God

  649. I'm in big trouble.

  650. I fear the nothingness

  651. when I look at the world

  652. around me

  653. and I see it

  654. out of control.

  655. And there seems

  656. to be no hope.

  657. I fear the nothingness

  658. when I think

  659. of my future

  660. my family

  661. my kids.

  662. I wonder what

  663. my kids are going

  664. to hope in

  665. as they see me

  666. as a dad

  667. hoping in nothing.

  668. And trying to come

  669. to grips with

  670. the fear

  671. that I feel.

  672. Sometimes I just

  673. wonder if I should

  674. eat and sleep

  675. and die.

  676. And the minute

  677. he said that

  678. it kind of spoke

  679. to my head

  680. because I was like

  681. well that's

  682. that's the passage

  683. that's what the Bible

  684. says.

  685. And so I asked him

  686. well how did you

  687. hear that?

  688. He said I think

  689. I heard it in some

  690. kind of movie

  691. on an airplane.

  692. But as I thought

  693. of my rugby friend

  694. for these 15 minutes

  695. that I get the chance

  696. to speak to you

  697. I wondered

  698. what is it

  699. that we hope in today?

  700. Do we hope

  701. in the nothingness?

  702. I mean I think

  703. if we're honest

  704. some of us

  705. would have to say

  706. throw away

  707. all of my costumes

  708. and all of my mask

  709. and all of the cars

  710. and everything I hide

  711. to protect myself

  712. that is my life.

  713. One modern philosopher

  714. said it this way

  715. he said

  716. that we live

  717. in this age

  718. of crisis

  719. in the age

  720. where the world

  721. has lost

  722. its story.

  723. Again I've never

  724. heard anybody

  725. say that before

  726. but he says

  727. we're in the age

  728. of crisis

  729. and the world

  730. has lost

  731. its story.

  732. It has no purpose

  733. it has no hope

  734. life used to have

  735. meaning and purpose

  736. but now

  737. all I think of

  738. when I look around

  739. in the world

  740. is nothing.

  741. I see no hope

  742. for the sufferings

  743. of the world

  744. I see nothing

  745. that will bring meaning

  746. I feel nothing.

  747. Have you ever

  748. heard somebody

  749. say that?

  750. I was like

  751. whoa

  752. I said okay

  753. let's go get a beer

  754. and lighten up

  755. a little

  756. or something like that

  757. but I think

  758. that if we're honest

  759. and we pull away

  760. our veneer

  761. that each one

  762. of us in here

  763. is hoping

  764. for something.

  765. Some of us

  766. are hoping

  767. I think

  768. like the verse

  769. in 32

  770. that's in your

  771. bulletin here

  772. some of us

  773. are just kind of

  774. wanting to live life

  775. and we find hope

  776. in just finding

  777. things that give

  778. our life meaning

  779. we become gatherers

  780. we gather stuff

  781. we gather people

  782. we gather education

  783. we gather titles

  784. we gather relationships

  785. we gather money

  786. we gather trophies

  787. we gather families

  788. and we hope

  789. that as we gather

  790. all these things

  791. that they actually

  792. give our life

  793. meaning and purpose

  794. I mean that's

  795. what we're hoping in

  796. that ultimately

  797. if I get enough

  798. of this

  799. then I'll be happy

  800. I'll feel secure

  801. and I'll be out

  802. of the nothingness

  803. some of us

  804. in here

  805. I think

  806. we're trying

  807. to find hope

  808. in being religious

  809. we think

  810. in our mind

  811. and I was here

  812. we think

  813. in our mind

  814. well I believe

  815. in a God

  816. and if I follow

  817. all the rules

  818. if I do all

  819. the right things

  820. if I come to church

  821. if I serve

  822. if I tithe

  823. if I do all the things

  824. if I know the lingo

  825. I know the Bible verses

  826. I know how to quote

  827. these things

  828. if I do all these

  829. right things

  830. if I live by my strength

  831. if I live by my intellect

  832. if I live by my will

  833. if I live by my goodness

  834. then I'm going to be

  835. and find hope

  836. but what I realize

  837. is that person

  838. is just as bad off

  839. as the first person

  840. because as I walk

  841. down that road

  842. I still struggled

  843. with self

  844. I don't know how to say it

  845. I always make up words

  846. up here

  847. I struggle with fixing myself

  848. I struggle with saving myself

  849. I struggle with redeeming myself

  850. and the Bible says

  851. that if we are one of these two people

  852. that no matter how hard we try

  853. no matter how much hope

  854. and power we give in our lives

  855. that we ultimately end up

  856. in this pathway of discouragement

  857. and despair

  858. and spiritual deadness

  859. and ultimately hopelessness

  860. and it's interesting

  861. because the passage today

  862. is the passage about hope

  863. in all the Bible

  864. I mean I don't know

  865. if you realize that

  866. when you read it

  867. I've read it hundreds

  868. and hundreds of times

  869. and sometimes I just kind of

  870. skim through it

  871. and I don't think about it

  872. but it is the passage of hope

  873. it's important to realize

  874. that in Jesus' day

  875. historians tell us

  876. that there were at least

  877. two dozen messiahs

  878. that came about

  879. do you know that

  880. two dozen messiahs?

  881. two dozen men

  882. who came forward

  883. they gathered large groups

  884. of people around them

  885. they led a movement

  886. and the movement

  887. was a movement of hope

  888. and freedom

  889. from the Roman government

  890. and historians tell us

  891. that out of those

  892. two dozen men

  893. all of them were captured

  894. all of them were killed

  895. and after their death

  896. all of their followers

  897. disbanded and disappeared

  898. all of their followers

  899. lost hope

  900. except for one group

  901. the followers of Jesus

  902. and something happened

  903. to the followers of Jesus

  904. that took them from guys

  905. who were running

  906. and hiding

  907. and fearful

  908. and hopelessness

  909. to a place

  910. where they started

  911. a movement that changed

  912. the face of history

  913. in the world

  914. and it's found

  915. in this passage

  916. right here

  917. if you look at your bulletins

  918. we're going to read it together

  919. really quickly

  920. and just go through it

  921. Luke 24 1-11

  922. but on the first day

  923. of the week

  924. it's early dawn

  925. they came to the tomb

  926. bringing the spices

  927. which they had prepared

  928. and when they found

  929. the stone rolled away

  930. we have pictures of it

  931. up here

  932. they entered

  933. into the tomb

  934. and when they entered in

  935. they didn't find the body

  936. now it's very interesting to me

  937. this passage

  938. has a lot of craziness to me

  939. because we're studying Luke

  940. as a church

  941. and what we realize

  942. in this passage

  943. is that over and over

  944. and over again

  945. Jesus is saying

  946. hey kill me

  947. in the third day

  948. I'm coming back

  949. hey kill me

  950. in the third day

  951. my body is resurrected

  952. hey kill me

  953. and it doesn't matter

  954. if you kill me

  955. because in the third day

  956. I'm coming back alive

  957. but when we get to this passage

  958. in the Bible

  959. in Luke 24

  960. there's no one

  961. at the tomb

  962. it's because

  963. his disciples

  964. didn't believe it

  965. I mean they didn't have

  966. a way to comprehend

  967. what he was talking about

  968. they had never seen

  969. a resurrection

  970. like he was talking about

  971. and they weren't

  972. at the tomb

  973. I mean this was

  974. the greatest event

  975. in human history

  976. and there was no one there

  977. I mean if we

  978. we make an announcement

  979. that there's going to be

  980. a new stamp

  981. or a new Hong Kong dollar bill

  982. the next morning

  983. at 530

  984. there's 5,000 people

  985. lined up

  986. to get these dollar bills

  987. and these stamps

  988. 5,000 people

  989. for a stamp

  990. and a dollar bill

  991. or a free little chess set

  992. but here Jesus says

  993. this is going to change everything

  994. and no one

  995. is there at the tomb

  996. isn't that strange

  997. they didn't believe

  998. they saw him crucified

  999. and they lost hope

  1000. in fact the thing

  1001. that's even harder

  1002. is the first people

  1003. to the tomb

  1004. are the women

  1005. and everyone knows

  1006. that women are worthless

  1007. that's not what I mean

  1008. but that's what

  1009. in Jesus' day

  1010. that's what they said

  1011. they said you couldn't

  1012. trust the testimony

  1013. of a woman

1014. in fact when it says

  1015. when they were saying

  1016. that what they said

  1017. made no sense

  1018. in Chinese

1019. it's la lao dao dao

  1020. two old ladies

  1021. talking

  1022. but they didn't

  1023. understand it

1024. I mean for the first

  1025. 200 years

  1026. every Greek philosopher

  1027. who tried to disprove

  1028. Christianity

1029. he always used the fact

  1030. that the witnesses

  1031. were women

  1032. and everyone knows

  1033. you can't trust a woman

  1034. because they're hysterical

  1035. and so Luke

  1036. uses women

  1037. to verify

  1038. this amazing event

  1039. and they come

  1040. into this tomb

  1041. and they're perplexed

  1042. the word means

  1043. at a loss

  1044. they don't know

  1045. what to do

  1046. and two men

  1047. were told later

  1048. in Matthew and Mark

  1049. that they're angels

  1050. they stand there

  1051. in gazing clothing

  1052. and the women

  1053. in verse 5

  1054. were terrified

  1055. they bowed their faces

  1056. to the ground

1057. and the men said to him

  1058. why do you seek

  1059. the living one

  1060. among the dead

1061. and then in verse 6

  1062. they say 8 words

  1063. and these 8 words

  1064. give ultimate hope

  1065. to Jesus' disciples

  1066. they say 8 words

  1067. and these 8 words

  1068. give ultimate hope

  1069. to you and me

  1070. and the words

  1071. are on the screen

  1072. he is not here

  1073. but he is risen

  1074. these 8 words

  1075. change history

  1076. these 8 words

  1077. give his disciples

  1078. hope that no other

  1079. group of followers

  1080. had

  1081. these 8 words

  1082. push men

  1083. to sacrifice

  1084. their lives

  1085. and they die

  1086. some of them

  1087. terrible deaths

  1088. were these words

  1089. and it's not

  1090. just these words

  1091. because if it was

  1092. just these words

  1093. in a closed tomb

  1094. it would mean nothing

  1095. and if it was

  1096. a closed tomb

  1097. and someone walking

  1098. around that looked

  1099. like Jesus

  1100. it would mean nothing

  1101. and if it was

  1102. an open tomb

  1103. and there was

  1104. no body

  1105. it would mean nothing

  1106. but there was

  1107. an open tomb

  1108. and Jesus walking

  1109. around amongst

  1110. the people

  1111. for 40 days

  1112. and it meant

  1113. everything

  1114. it changed

  1115. everything

  1116. the resurrection

  1117. of Jesus Christ

  1118. changed these people

  1119. it changed

  1120. the movement

  1121. it changed

  1122. the Roman Empire

  1123. it changed

  1124. the world

  1125. but none of his

  1126. disciples believed

  1127. in it at first

  1128. until they came

  1129. into the tomb

  1130. and they heard

  1131. these words

  1132. he is not here

  1133. for he is risen

  1134. can you

  1135. just for the sake

  1136. of wanting you

  1137. to hear this

1138. and so we can hear

  1139. it as a church

  1140. can you repeat

  1141. that after me

  1142. he is not here

  1143. for he is risen

  1144. one more time

  1145. he is not here

  1146. for he is risen

  1147. he is not here

  1148. for he is risen

  1149. changes everything

  1150. it changes

  1151. the nothingness

  1152. in our life

  1153. it changes

  1154. the hopelessness

  1155. that the disciples

  1156. have

  1157. and it changes

  1158. the hope

  1159. that you

  1160. and I have

  1161. when I think

  1162. of this passage

  1163. there are three things

1164. that stick out to me

  1165. and we are told

1166. not to say three things

  1167. in preaching class

  1168. but these things

  1169. are important

1170. and I want to say

  1171. them to you

  1172. that an empty tomb

  1173. and a savior

  1174. walking around

  1175. means that our past

  1176. is forgiven

  1177. an empty tomb

  1178. and a savior

  1179. walking around

  1180. means that our past

  1181. is forgiven

  1182. and no matter

  1183. how hard

  1184. no matter how bad

  1185. we have blown it

  1186. an empty tomb

  1187. brings forgiveness

  1188. mercy

  1189. and grace

1190. this is what I wish

  1191. I could have told

  1192. my rugby friend

  1193. but I didn't have

  1194. enough courage

  1195. to do that

  1196. because he was tough

  1197. and he believed

  1198. in the nothingness

  1199. but an empty tomb

  1200. changes everything

  1201. it's very interesting

  1202. in this passage

  1203. because every time

  1204. in all the gospels

  1205. Jesus asked

  1206. for Peter

  1207. now you've got to

  1208. remember this is important

  1209. because Peter blew it

1210. Peter was in the garden

  1211. he was there

1212. he could have stuck up

  1213. for Christ

  1214. and at the end

  1215. he denied Christ

  1216. three times

  1217. with profanity

  1218. and he ran away

  1219. and every time

  1220. Jesus says

  1221. bring Peter

  1222. bring Peter

  1223. bring Peter

1224. now if I were Jesus

1225. and I said bring Peter

  1226. it meant I wanted

  1227. to get in trouble

1228. I wanted to kick him

  1229. out of the club

  1230. because he screwed up

  1231. but what we see

  1232. in the gospels

1233. is he takes the guy

  1234. who failed the worst

1235. at the most critical moment

  1236. and he loves him

  1237. he changes him

  1238. he brings grace

  1239. and redemption

  1240. into his life

  1241. and an empty tomb

  1242. means that no matter

  1243. what you've done

  1244. in your past

  1245. no matter how bad

  1246. you've screwed up

  1247. no matter where

  1248. your fears are

  1249. an empty tomb

  1250. in Jesus walking around

  1251. means that all those

  1252. things are fixed

  1253. an empty tomb

1254. in a savior walking around

  1255. means that my worth

  1256. and my identity

  1257. my significance

  1258. never changes

1259. I mean think of this

1260. we live in a world

  1261. where everything is changing

  1262. so quickly

  1263. information

  1264. technology

  1265. our jobs

  1266. we wonder if we're

1267. going to have a job

  1268. the next day

  1269. we wonder if we're

  1270. going to have money

  1271. the next day

  1272. I have friends

  1273. that wanted to retire

  1274. and now they're worth

1275. one half of what they

  1276. were before

  1277. and they can't retire

1278. and some of my friends

  1279. were looking at our

  1280. portfolios

  1281. and every day

  1282. were going

  1283. and looking at the

  1284. bank account

  1285. and saying

  1286. what am I worth

1287. and what can I do

1288. and when can I retire

1289. and how am I going to survive

  1290. in an empty tomb

  1291. says it doesn't matter

1292. because God is in control

1293. and he can take care of you

1294. and that he paid the most

  1295. expensive thing

  1296. his son Jesus Christ

  1297. the greatest cost

  1298. and that cost

1299. is never going to diminish

  1300. so when you walk

  1301. into the earth

  1302. to the work

  1303. and your boss

  1304. creams you

  1305. or slams you

  1306. your spouse

  1307. is angry at you

  1308. or your kids disobey

1309. or you lose your job

  1310. or whatever happens

  1311. in your life

1312. and the doctor tells you

  1313. you have cancer

  1314. it doesn't really matter

  1315. because your worth

  1316. is secure

1317. and God is in control

  1318. and he's going to

  1319. take care of you

  1320. because he took care

  1321. of his son

  1322. an empty tomb

1323. and a savior walking around

  1324. means that our future

  1325. is not at risk

  1326. that there's more

  1327. to this life

  1328. than the nothingness

  1329. and because we have

  1330. an empty tomb

  1331. and we see Jesus

  1332. in teaching

  1333. and we know

  1334. that he resurrected

1335. we know that his words

  1336. are true

1337. and we can trust him

  1338. you see if Jesus

1339. was still in the tomb

  1340. as Paul says

  1341. in Corinthians

  1342. we might as well

  1343. just eat and drink

  1344. and fornicate

  1345. and do whatever

  1346. I don't know

  1347. if we can say

  1348. fornicate in church

  1349. but fornicate

  1350. because that's all

  1351. there is in life

  1352. because when you die

1353. you just go to the worms

1354. you go to the nothingness

  1355. but because there's

  1356. an empty tomb

  1357. and Jesus rose

1358. it meant that his words

  1359. were true

1360. it meant that when he

  1361. paid for our sin

  1362. that God said

  1363. the payment is accepted

  1364. because if his payment

  1365. wasn't accepted

  1366. Jesus would still be

  1367. in the tomb

  1368. and we'd be walking

  1369. around in our sin

  1370. and we'd be looking

  1371. for another Messiah

  1372. but because Jesus

  1373. is resurrected

1374. and there's an empty tomb

  1375. our future is secure

  1376. because God

  1377. accepted him

  1378. in our place

1379. and so on this Easter

  1380. when you leave here

1381. I want you to remember

  1382. a couple things

1383. and one of them is

  1384. no matter how bad

1385. you've blown in the past

  1386. an empty tomb

  1387. means forgiveness

1388. no matter where you're at

1389. no matter where your stock is

1390. no matter how you judge yourself

  1391. and your worth

  1392. your title

  1393. how people see you

  1394. it doesn't really matter

1395. because when they look at you

1396. and when God looks at you

1397. he sees his son Jesus Christ

  1398. and that never changes

  1399. and finally

  1400. an empty tomb means

1401. that our future is secure

1402. and we can trust God

  1403. with everything

  1404. we can trust him

  1405. with my life

  1406. we can trust him

  1407. with my finances

  1408. we can trust him

  1409. with my family

  1410. we can trust him

  1411. with everything

  1412. because he's good

  1413. now I don't know

  1414. where you are today

  1415. in your journey

  1416. I don't know

  1417. what you're hoping in

  1418. I don't know

  1419. what you're trusting in

  1420. I don't know

1421. if your life has a story

  1422. after working in ministry

  1423. for 30 years

  1424. I'm pretty sure

1425. that there are some of us

  1426. in here

1427. whose lives have no stories

1428. and our lives have no hope

  1429. and no meaning

  1430. but the story

  1431. of the resurrection

  1432. the story of Easter

1433. is that you don't have

  1434. to continue being surrounded

  1435. by the nothingness

  1436. for Christ

  1437. erupted from the grave

  1438. to free us

  1439. and bring us back

  1440. from the family

  1441. I shared this

  1442. with a friend

  1443. and he said

  1444. well why don't everyone

  1445. believe

  1446. if it's that simple

  1447. that's a good question

  1448. isn't it

1449. if you can prove it

  1450. and it's just

  1451. right out there

  1452. why doesn't everybody

  1453. believe it's that simple

  1454. I was like

  1455. dude that's a

  1456. that's a great question

  1457. and I thought about

  1458. my life

  1459. and I realized

  1460. probably

  1461. some of us

  1462. don't want to believe

  1463. because we don't want

  1464. to stop being God

  1465. in our life

  1466. and if we believe

  1467. in a Savior

  1468. who's risen

  1469. that means that

  1470. we're not God anymore

  1471. but there is really

  1472. a God

1473. and we have to deal

  1474. with him somehow

  1475. and that makes me

  1476. feel uncomfortable

  1477. if you're like me

  1478. it's just because

  1479. I was intellectually lazy

  1480. I mean I saw

  1481. the information there

  1482. but I didn't really

1483. want to think about it

1484. I didn't want to pray about it

  1485. I didn't want to say

  1486. okay God

  1487. if you're real

  1488. will you show me

  1489. I was just lazy

  1490. but the message

  1491. of Easter

1492. that we want you to hear

1493. that I want you to hear

1494. that you can run out

  1495. of here afterwards

  1496. hopefully you'll go

  1497. to the outreach

  1498. because we're going

  1499. to have a great

1500. we have 800 Easter eggs

  1501. we've been praying

  1502. for good weather

  1503. we have food

  1504. we'll have drinks

  1505. and ice cream

  1506. but the message

  1507. of Easter

  1508. the message of Jesus

  1509. is that

  1510. Jesus is God

  1511. he came to earth

  1512. to live a life

1513. that we could not live

  1514. he was crucified

  1515. to pay a debt

1516. that we could not pay

  1517. to satiate

  1518. a holy righteous God

  1519. that he was put

  1520. in a tomb

  1521. and three days later

  1522. he rose

  1523. and that resurrection

  1524. changes everything

  1525. if we understand that

  1526. I was working

  1527. on my sermon

  1528. last night

1529. and my five year old

  1530. came into my room

  1531. I should have just

1532. let her come up here

  1533. and do the sermon

1534. it would have taken me

  1535. two minutes

  1536. she comes in

  1537. and she goes

  1538. what are you doing

  1539. and I said

  1540. I'm working on a sermon

  1541. she goes

  1542. well tomorrow's Easter

  1543. right

  1544. and I said yes

  1545. and she goes

  1546. that means Jesus

  1547. rose from the grave

  1548. right

  1549. and I said yes

  1550. that means God

  1551. loves us

  1552. right

  1553. and I said

  1554. yes

  1555. you want to come

  1556. do the sermon

  1557. next week

  1558. but that's the message

  1559. of Easter

  1560. and our hope

  1561. and our prayers

  1562. wherever you are at

  1563. in your journey

1564. that you would join us

  1565. as a church family

1566. in taking the next steps

  1567. towards an amazing

  1568. savior

  1569. who's walked out

  1570. of an empty tomb

  1571. and he's walking

  1572. around

  1573. right now

  1574. let me pray

  1575. Father we thank you

  1576. for this day

  1577. we thank you

  1578. for the tomb

  1579. we thank you

  1580. for your word

  1581. we thank you

  1582. that you did not

  1583. leave us

  1584. for the nothingness

1585. but that you gave us

  1586. ultimate hope

  1587. and ultimate purpose

  1588. and an ultimate relationship

  1589. with your son

  1590. Jesus Christ

  1591. I realize

  1592. even now

  1593. that there are

  1594. many of us here

  1595. who this is probably

  1596. the first time

1597. they've been in the church

  1598. or they haven't been

  1599. in a church

  1600. for a very

  1601. very very

  1602. very long time

  1603. and Father

  1604. I pray that you

  1605. would speak to them

  1606. I pray that they

  1607. wouldn't be

  1608. intellectually lazy

  1609. I pray that they

  1610. would realize

1611. that there is a God

1612. and they are not him

  1613. and Father

  1614. as we come together

  1615. as a family

  1616. and journey together

  1617. and help each other

  1618. and encourage each other

  1619. I pray Lord

  1620. that you would

  1621. show yourself to them

  1622. and Father

1623. for the rest of us

  1624. in here

  1625. who are your children

  1626. but we're still

  1627. trying to live

  1628. a religious life

  1629. help us to realize

  1630. that you've already

1631. paid all of our debts

  1632. help our lives

  1633. be one of response

  1634. to what you've done

  1635. for us

  1636. help us to realize

  1637. that you're good

  1638. because you're good

  1639. we can trust you

  1640. with all things

  1641. even things

  1642. that we're even

  1643. afraid to talk about

  1644. and so Father

  1645. we pray that this

  1646. Easter Sunday

  1647. this new Sunday

  1648. this day of new

  1649. beginnings

1650. that you would give us

  1651. a new beginning

  1652. in our hearts

  1653. that we would find

  1654. hope and peace

  1655. and love

  1656. and we pray

  1657. all these things

  1658. in your son

  1659. Jesus holy name

  1660. amen

  1661. okay so

  1662. choir

  1663. great

  1664. amazing job

  1665. Melissa

  1666. thank you for

  1667. all you guys

  1668. everybody up there

  1669. is just

  1670. who are you

  1671. young man

  1672. that was great

  1673. guys

  1674. hey

  1675. that was

  1676. I just want to

  1677. share with you

  1678. right afterwards

  1679. at one o'clock

  1680. we're having

  1681. an Easter egg

  1682. outreach

  1683. on the podium

  1684. up there

  1685. we'd love to invite

  1686. you just to come

  1687. grab some food

  1688. hang out with the

  1689. families there

1690. it's from one to three

  1691. the church will provide

  1692. drinks and ice cream

  1693. cones afterwards

1694. so just grab some food

  1695. and come hang out

  1696. and if you're not

  1697. in a community group

  1698. that's focused

  1699. on doing an outreach

1700. we still need your help

1701. to help us with the outreach

1702. that would be a great

  1703. great event

  1704. also next week

1705. we have a church wide

  1706. buffet lunch

1707. and so we want you

1708. to invite you to come

  1709. it's on the house

  1710. as everything is

  1711. in Hong Kong

  1712. on the house

  1713. and so we'll eat

  1714. out there right afterwards

  1715. so invite a friend

1716. this will be a great

  1717. opportunity

  1718. to introduce them

  1719. to the church

  1720. and to the community

1721. and what's going on here

  1722. and on April 17th

  1723. a Tuesday

  1724. we're going to start

  1725. a marriage class

  1726. six weeks meal

  1727. included

  1728. guys

  1729. Tuesday night

  1730. Tuesday night

1731. 730 at the community center

  1732. finished by 945

  1733. food

  1734. fellowship

  1735. and a great program

  1736. that we were going

  1737. to go through

  1738. of what it means

  1739. to love

  1740. and respect each other

  1741. so wives

  1742. bring your husbands

  1743. husbands bring your wife

  1744. and sign up

  1745. on the table

  1746. or online

  1747. and beyond that

  1748. I have one thing

  1749. to say

  1750. it's Easter

  1751. that means

  1752. that Jesus

  1753. rose from the grave

  1754. and he loves us

  1755. right

  1756. that's what my

  1757. five year old

  1758. told me

  1759. and I believe

  1760. five year olds

  1761. right

  1762. so guys

  1763. we're so glad

  1764. you're here

  1765. and we hope

  1766. that as you leave

  1767. here

  1768. that you would

  1769. bask in that

  1770. truth

  1771. of God's

  1772. relationship

  1773. and desire

  1774. for you

  1775. there'll be

  1776. people up front

  1777. with the lanyards

  1778. on

  1779. who have been

  1780. trained to pray

  1781. for each other

  1782. and pray for people

  1783. so if you have

  1784. a prayer request

  1785. please grab them

  1786. and just pray

  1787. and I'm going to

  1788. close with just

  1789. a quick prayer

  1790. I just feel like

  1791. if you've never

  1792. invited Christ

  1793. into your life

  1794. I'm just going to

  1795. do a quick prayer

  1796. of what that looks

  1797. like

  1798. and just

  1799. because I feel like

1800. we need to do that

  1801. as we talk about

  1802. a church reaching out

  1803. and we'll hopefully

1804. see you at one o'clock

1805. so let me pray for us

  1806. dear Jesus

  1807. thank you for

  1808. rescuing me

  1809. from the nothingness

1810. I come before you now

1811. and I give you my life

  1812. and who I am

1813. I trust you to be good

1814. I trust you to be God

1815. I trust that the grave

  1816. is empty

1817. and that you are alive

1818. as I walk in that faith

  1819. and that power

1820. I ask that you would

1821. fill me with your spirit

  1822. show me the hope

  1823. that the disciples had

  1824. help me to walk

1825. in the newness of life

  1826. on this day

  1827. which is all about

  1828. newness and hope

  1829. Easter

  1830. and Father

1831. for the rest of us

  1832. I just thank you

  1833. for what you're doing

  1834. in our lives

  1835. that we're on a journey

1836. and we're taking baby steps

1837. just help us to encourage

  1838. each other

  1839. in those steps

1840. we pray for the outreach

  1841. and the fun today

  1842. and the podium

1843. pray that it doesn't rain

1844. help us to have fun

  1845. and just to enjoy

  1846. this beautiful day

  1847. you've given us

  1848. a day of hope

1849. and a day of newness

  1850. we love you

1851. and we pray these things

1852. in your son Jesus name

  1853. amen

  1854. God bless you guys

1855. we'll see you back here

1856. we'll see you over there

  1857. at one hopefully

1858. and then we'll see you

  1859. back here next Sunday

  1860. you
