  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of Exodus, chapters 2 and 3.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Now it came about in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died,

  4. and the sons of Israel sighed because of the bondage, and they cried out.

  5. And their cry for help because of their bondage rose up to God.

  6. So God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  7. God saw the sons of Israel, and God took notice of them.

  8. Now Moses was pasturing the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian,

  9. and he led the flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.

  10. The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush.

  11. And he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.

  12. So Moses said, I must turn aside now and see this marvelous sight.

  13. Why the bush is not burnt up?

  14. When the Lord saw that, he turned aside to look.

  15. God called to him from the midst of the bush and said, Moses, Moses.

  16. And he said, Here I am.

  17. Then he said, Do not come near here.

  18. Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.

  19. He said also, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

  20. Then Joseph hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

  21. The Lord said,

  22. I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt,

  23. and have given heed to their cry because of their taskmasters,

  24. for I am aware of their sufferings.

  25. So I have come down to deliver them from the power of the Egyptians,

  26. and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land,

  27. to a land flowing with milk and honey,

  28. to the place of the Canaanite and the Hittite and the Amorite and the Pezite and the Hevite and the Jebusite.

  29. Now behold, the cry of the sons of Israel has come to me.

  30. Furthermore, I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them.

  31. Therefore, come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh,

  32. so that you may bring my people, the sons of Israel, out of Egypt.

  33. But Moses said to God,

  34. Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh,

  35. and that I should bring the sons of Israel out of Egypt?

  36. And he said,

  37. Certainly I will be with you,

  38. and this shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you.

  39. When you have brought the people out of Egypt,

  40. you shall worship God at this mountain.

  41. Then Moses said to God,

  42. Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel,

  43. and I will say to them,

  44. The God of your fathers has sent me to you.

  45. And now they may say to me,

  46. What is his name?

  47. What shall I say to them?

  48. God said to Moses,

  49. I am who I am.

  50. And he said,

  51. Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel,

  52. I am has sent me to you.

  53. This is the reading of God's word.

  54. Wow, do I hear amen to that?

  55. You can say amen, we're in church, that's okay.

  56. That's amazing.

  57. Thanks guys.

  58. Guys,

  59. We are

  60. finishing up a series on prayer.

  61. We've had Mike do an amazing sermon on the kingdom.

  62. What do we wait for?

  63. We had Wehan,

  64. did a great job on just praise and worshiping him.

  65. And what does that look like?

  66. I don't know if you were here last Sunday.

  67. If you weren't,

  68. I don't often say this,

  69. but I think you need to go online and listen to the sermon

  70. because we talked a lot about

  71. where we feel like God has a church.

  72. We handed out these,

  73. we ran out of these.

  74. Actually, we'll have some more next week.

  75. If you didn't get one of these,

  76. you need to get one of these

  77. and look at where we've been

  78. and where we are now

  79. and where we're praying that God will take us as a church.

  80. It's an amazing,

  81. exciting time to be on this journey with him.

  82. We talk a lot about in this church

  83. that we're on a journey.

  84. And in this journey,

  85. we all have stories that are being told.

  86. Our hope is that your story

  87. is being interwoven with God's story,

  88. that God is touching you

  89. and he's meeting you

  90. and he's changing you.

  91. We've said a couple times

  92. and you've seen this illustration

  93. that our hope is that as we're on this journey

  94. as a church and as a community

  95. that we're reaching out,

  96. that somewhere in this life

  97. that God comes into your life

  98. and he touches you.

  99. We have a PowerPoint hopefully for this

  100. and here it is.

  101. So you're on this journey

  102. and we have this conversion event that happens.

  103. Somewhere God opens your eyes

  104. to his son Jesus Christ.

  105. You fall in love with him

  106. and he changes you.

  107. And as you go on this journey,

  108. we grow in two dimensions.

  109. We grow in this dimension of

  110. that we're growing awareness of God's holiness.

  111. And as we do that,

  112. hopefully we're growing in the dimension

  113. that we're aware of our brokenness,

  114. our neediness,

  115. our sinfulness,

  116. our flesh.

  117. And these two things we hope should be,

  118. we want them to be,

  119. growing at the same time.

  120. And if you don't grow both of these

  121. at the same time,

  122. we kind of become lopsided.

  123. And as they grow at the same time,

  124. we see that the cross gets bigger and bigger.

  125. We start to understand even more

  126. what grace means.

  127. We start to understand even more and more

  128. what holiness means.

  129. We start to understand even more

  130. what God sacrificed

  131. and what it cost Christ to bring you

  132. into his family.

  133. I think sometimes we forget that.

  134. We forget what it costs God

  135. to bring us back

  136. to the family of God.

  137. And sometimes on this journey,

  138. as we grow,

  139. we enter into this dimension

  140. and we're going to talk about it today.

  141. And it's hard as a pastor

  142. because I wish I could be

  143. in every one of your stories.

  144. I wish I could know

  145. what is going on in your life.

  146. And I don't.

  147. I can only share

  148. what's been going on in my life.

  149. And I know that we're all

  150. about the same on this journey.

  151. But as we enter into this lifestyle,

  152. sometimes we have these things happen.

  153. And as we go along in time,

  154. we basically see,

  155. you can just keep pushing them out there,

  156. that we have this time,

  157. we have hope,

  158. and we have reality.

  159. That we're on this journey

  160. and we understand

  161. how we want to live our lives.

  162. We understand what our lives

  163. want to look like.

  164. But something is happening there.

  165. That our reality

  166. and what we hope to happen

  167. aren't matching up.

  168. That we hope

  169. that we would get this job

  170. by this time

  171. or we hope that we would be married

  172. by this time

  173. or we hope that our kids

  174. would act right by this time

  175. or we hope that something

  176. would happen by this time

  177. and the reality just doesn't match it.

  178. And what happens

  179. is we enter into this period

  180. of tension and despair

  181. and hurt and anguish and angst

  182. and sometimes we deal with it

  183. by just denial.

  184. We just say,

  185. hey, I know you've felt like this.

  186. Sometimes I have.

  187. You know, it's like this.

  188. There's a 500-pound gorilla

  189. in our room right now.

  190. My wife and I need to talk about that,

  191. but we don't want to talk about that

  192. because we just think

  193. if we ignore it,

  194. it'll go away.

  195. And we do that

  196. in our relationships

  197. and in the church

  198. and when things are hurting

  199. and when somebody offends us.

  200. We just do that

  201. and we live in this realm

  202. of unreality

  203. trying to cover up

  204. all that tension.

  205. Sometimes on our journey,

  206. we try to just basically

  207. work harder.

  208. We figure,

  209. okay, here's what my reality is.

  210. This is what I want.

  211. If I just work harder,

  212. everything is going to be okay.

  213. I mean, maybe

  214. I haven't been praying enough.

  215. Maybe I haven't been reading

  216. my Bible enough.

  217. Maybe I haven't done

  218. these other things enough

  219. and if I do these

  220. and I work really hard

  221. or maybe I study really hard,

  222. if I do all these things

  223. then God's going to go,

  224. that's great.

  225. You did it.

  226. Here, here's the golden ticket.

  227. Great job.

  228. And so we become determined

  229. and we just work

  230. and we work and we work.

  231. And the Bible says

  232. that we enter into religion.

  233. That's what religion is.

  234. Religion is,

  235. I do these things

  236. so that I earn God's favor.

  237. If I do these things,

  238. then God owes me.

  239. Sometimes we enter

  240. into just despair.

  241. I think despair

  242. is sometimes

  243. the easiest thing to do,

  244. especially in certain cultures.

  245. You just give up.

  246. Well, you realize

  247. that my reality

  248. will never match

  249. what I hope.

  250. And instead of walking around

  251. frustrated,

  252. all the time

  253. and in anguish

  254. and in despair

  255. and just frustrated,

  256. I just give up.

  257. And I say,

  258. well, whatever.

  259. I don't know

  260. if you've ever felt

  261. those things

  262. in your life,

  263. but the passage today

  264. is full

  265. of those things.

  266. And it's something

  267. I think that we

  268. as a church

  269. need to deal with

  270. and talk about

  271. instead of hiding.

  272. We're looking

  273. at this passage

  274. in Exodus

  275. which I think

  276. is one of my

  277. favorite passages.

  278. And I'm just sharing

  279. my story with you guys.

  280. It's something

  281. that I continue

  282. to come back to

  283. over and over

  284. and over again

  285. as I get despaired.

  286. In Exodus,

  287. in the Old Testament,

  288. we often look

  289. at narrative.

  290. The stories

  291. are narrative.

  292. They're telling

  293. a story.

  294. Now, it's much

  295. different than

  296. the New Testament.

  297. The New Testament,

  298. you come to it

  299. and this gives you

  300. this action point.

  301. Christ died for you.

  302. He shed his blood

  303. on the cross.

  304. You need to repent

  305. and turn back

  306. to him

  307. and that point

  308. is very,

  309. very clear.

  310. But sometimes

  311. when we come

  312. to the Old Testament,

  313. that point is there

  314. but we have to read

  315. and read

  316. and think about it

  317. because often

  318. it's hidden

  319. in the shadows

  320. because the ultimate

  321. fulfilling

  322. of this truth

  323. is in Jesus Christ.

  324. And so we see

  325. these truths there

  326. and we read them

  327. and we compare them

  328. to what we know

  329. of the story

  330. that God is weaving

  331. throughout all

  332. of Scripture.

  333. And so this passage

  334. today talks about

  335. the desert times,

  336. talks about

  337. the difficult times

  338. and I don't know

  339. what the desert times

  340. are for you

  341. in your life.

  342. When I looked

  343. at those first charts

  344. and I looked

  345. at this despair,

  346. I think of country

  347. western,

  348. okay, I'm gonna confess,

  349. I think of country

  350. western music.

  351. Does anybody here

  352. ever listen

  353. to country western music?

  354. Okay, so country

  355. western music

  356. is like the most

  357. listened to music

  358. in America,

  359. maybe worldwide,

  360. I don't know.

  361. But in country western,

  362. I don't know.

  363. It's where I learned

  364. about grief and despair

  365. before I became

  366. a Christian, okay?

  367. But in country western music

  368. there is a scale

  369. of despair.

  370. If you hear the guy

  371. singing and he's singing

  372. about he lost his job

  373. or his boss is a jerk,

  374. then his despair

  375. is pretty low.

  376. I mean,

  377. if he's singing

  378. about his boyfriend

  379. or his girlfriend

  380. broke up with him

  381. and life is terrible,

  382. then the despair

  383. is a little high.

  384. If he talks about

  385. his car broke down,

  386. especially his truck,

  387. then it's in the medium

  388. level of despair

  389. because that's very important

  390. for country folk,

  391. their trucks.

  392. If he talks about

  393. his wife left him

  394. for his best friend

  395. or her best friend,

  396. that's really bad,

  397. okay?

  398. And the ultimate is

  399. if he talks about

  400. his dog dying.

  401. If you're listening

  402. to the song

  403. and a guy's talking

  404. about his dog dying,

  405. you know that he's like

  406. in the pit of despair.

  407. I mean,

  408. the only thing worse

  409. than your dog dying

  410. is if you lost your job,

  411. your boss is a jerk,

  412. your boyfriend

  413. and your girlfriend

  414. broke up with you,

  415. your wife left you

  416. for her friend

  417. or your best friend,

  418. your car broke down

  419. and your dog died,

  420. then your life,

  421. you're in despair,

  422. you just give up,

  423. there's no hope.

  424. I don't know

  425. where you are today

  426. and my hope is

  427. that you're not there.

  428. My hope is

  429. that some of these things

  430. you're gonna hear today,

  431. you're gonna go,

  432. that's just not

  433. where I'm at.

  434. I'm not in the desolate times.

  435. But if you're

  436. God's child,

  437. you will be.

  438. You will be.

  439. Because the Bible says

  440. that God loves us

  441. so much

  442. that he doesn't want

  443. to leave us

  444. as we are.

  445. He doesn't want

  446. to leave us broken.

  447. He doesn't want

  448. to leave us needy.

  449. He doesn't want

  450. to leave us in guilt.

  451. He doesn't want

  452. to leave us in shame.

  453. And often,

  454. he will take us

  455. to the desert places

  456. to fix those things.

  457. I don't know

  458. what the desolate things

  459. are in your life.

  460. Maybe they're

  461. broken promises.

  462. Maybe they're

  463. broken relationships.

  464. Maybe they're

  465. broken families.

  466. Maybe they're

  467. broken kids,

  468. or your kids

  469. are out of control.

  470. Maybe your boss

  471. is out of control.

  472. Maybe your health

  473. is broken.

  474. Maybe it's caused

  475. because you've been

  476. sinful,

  477. and you've just

  478. been disobedient

  479. to God,

  480. and you've gone

  481. into this desert place.

  482. Maybe you've made

  483. poor choices.

  484. Maybe you're married

  485. to your desert place.

  486. But the passage today,

  487. for me,

  488. and I've only been

  489. at this for about

  490. 38 years,

  491. okay,

  492. so I've been

  493. on this Christian

  494. journey for 38 years,

  495. and it's scary to me

  496. because every day

  497. I learn something new

  498. about God's grace.

  499. Every day I learn

  500. something new

  501. about God's mercy.

  502. Every day I learn

  503. something new

  504. about what God

  505. is doing in my life,

  506. and what he needs

  507. to do,

  508. and what I need

  509. to give up to him.

  510. But this passage

  511. has three

  512. seminal points

  513. I want you to hear

  514. really carefully.

  515. Because if you don't

  516. need them now,

  517. you are going to need

  518. them sometime

  519. in your life.

  520. And we're in the book

  521. of Exodus,

  522. and Exodus begins

  523. at about 1500 B.C.

  524. The people of God

  525. have been in Egypt

  526. for over 400 years.

  527. I mean,

  528. it ends in Genesis

  529. when we're told

  530. that Joseph brings

  531. his whole family,

  532. the people that God

  533. has chosen,

  534. and we get to this part

  535. in Exodus

  536. where we're told

  537. that the king dies,

  538. and things get

  539. really bad.

  540. They get so bad

  541. that the people of God

  542. start to cry out

  543. and ask God,

  544. where are you?

  545. Where are you

  546. in this despair?

  547. Where are you

  548. in these terrible times?

  549. You can take that off.

  550. That's great.

  551. Where are you

  552. in our lives?

  553. And as I look at that

  554. in my life,

  555. there are three things

  556. that keep sticking out

  557. to me.

  558. The first thing

  559. is the question,

  560. what?

  561. What I hope to do

  562. is we're going to cover

  563. what,

  564. where,

  565. and will.

  566. Those three points.

  567. And the first thing

  568. that sticks out to me

  569. in this passage

  570. is the question,

  571. what?

  572. As we've gone

  573. through this journey time,

  574. as you look here

  575. in this passage,

  576. now it came about

  577. in the course of many days

  578. that the king of Egypt

  579. died and the sons

  580. of Israel sighed

  581. because the bondage,

  582. and they cried out

  583. greatly.

  584. They cried,

  585. it says four times,

  586. different ways.

  587. They cried,

  588. they cried for help.

  589. They wailed

  590. because their bondage

  591. rose up to God

  592. and it was really,

  593. really bad.

  594. So God heard

  595. their groaning

  596. and God remembered

  597. his covenant

  598. with Abraham,

  599. Isaac,

  600. and Jacob

  601. and God saw them

  602. and he felt compassion

  603. on them.

  604. The word is

  605. he noticed them

  606. but it's actually

  607. he,

  608. he has been noticing them.

  609. But it's not just

  610. he's woke up one day

  611. and realized,

  612. oh,

  613. I have this promise.

  614. But the scripture says

  615. that he's been watching them

  616. the whole time.

  617. And the first thing

  618. that I learn

  619. about prayer

  620. in the desert places,

  621. in the difficult places,

  622. in the desolate places,

  623. is that often

  624. God

  625. is the one

  626. who takes us

  627. to these places.

  628. God

  629. is the one

  630. who leads us.

  631. God

  632. is the one

  633. who takes us.

  634. God

  635. is the one

  636. who allows us.

  637. God

  638. is the one

  639. who places us

  640. in these places

  641. and is through

  642. throughout scripture.

  643. He brings the people

  644. of God

  645. in Genesis

  646. to Egypt.

  647. He brought

  648. Moses to the wilderness

  649. and to the mountain.

  650. He brings the people

  651. in a little while

  652. out into the wilderness

  653. where they travel

  654. for 40 years.

  655. He brings

  656. Jesus,

  657. his son,

  658. into the wilderness

  659. for 40 days.

  660. And in the wilderness

  661. he does something

  662. that he

  663. changes them.

  664. he changes

  665. us.

  666. I mean the Bible

  667. tells us that God

  668. is going to take

  669. everyone he loves

  670. into the wilderness.

  671. Now I know

  672. that's not sexy.

  673. That's not the sexy gospel.

  674. The sexy gospel says

  675. well you become a Christian

  676. and you get a Rolex

  677. and everything is perfect

  678. and you never have problems.

  679. But the Bible

  680. it doesn't

  681. say that.

  682. It says

  683. that he loves us

  684. so much

  685. that he wants

  686. to heal us

  687. and the only way

  688. that he can heal us

  689. is by taking us

  690. into these desert places

  691. into the desolate places.

  692. And what we see there

  693. is when he takes us

  694. into these places

  695. he teaches us

  696. two things.

  697. The first thing

  698. that he does

  699. is he shows us

  700. a lot about ourselves.

  701. He shows us

  702. our idols.

  703. He shows us

  704. our pride.

  705. He shows us

  706. our arrogance.

  707. And he can only

  708. show us

  709. us these things

  710. when everything

  711. is stripped away

  712. when things

  713. are difficult.

  714. I mean you look

  715. at the passage here

  716. and sometimes

  717. we read through it

  718. really quickly

  719. but I think it is

  720. an amazing passage.

  721. Verse 1

  722. look at that

  723. really quickly here.

  724. What does he say?

  725. Now Moses

  726. who is pasturing

  727. the flock of Jethro

  728. his father-in-law

  729. the priest of Midian

  730. and we're going to

  731. stop right there.

  732. Now if you were

  733. a Hebrew person

  734. and you read this passage

  735. you would be

  736. freaking out.

  737. And if you were

  738. an Egyptian

  739. you would be

  740. even more

  741. concerned

  742. and messed up

  743. because you have

  744. to realize

  745. that it's Moses.

  746. Now of all the people

  747. in the scripture

  748. besides Christ

  749. he is the person

  750. who probably

  751. has the greatest

  752. influence

  753. in all of us.

  754. Moses

  755. who was

  756. raised

  757. and educated

  758. in the best

  759. education system

  760. in the world

  761. at that time.

  762. Moses

  763. who hated

  764. shepherds

  765. when Joseph

  766. came

  767. and the Egyptians

  768. hated shepherds

  769. they said

  770. don't even tell

  771. Pharaoh

  772. you're a shepherd

  773. because

  774. shepherds

  775. are disgusting.

  776. The Egyptians

  777. used to shave

  778. all the hair

  779. off their body

  780. and it was a daily

  781. ritual of cleansing

  782. and they realized

  783. and they thought

  784. that anybody

  785. who dealt

  786. with animals

  787. and livestock

  788. especially shepherds

  789. were defiled

  790. and unclean.

  791. Keep them away

  792. from us.

  793. But here we see

  794. that Moses

  795. is shepherding

  796. the flock

  797. of his father-in-law.

  798. Moses

  799. the prince of Egypt

  800. who had

  801. enormous amounts

  802. of wealth.

  803. He was one of the

  804. most wealthy men

  805. in his age

  806. before he made

  807. his exodus

  808. into the wilderness.

  809. And here

  810. he doesn't even

  811. have his own flock.

  812. He doesn't have

  813. anything to say

  814. this is mine.

  815. God

  816. took all that

  817. away from him

  818. because he realized

  819. that Moses

  820. was clinging

  821. to those things

  822. more

  823. than he was

  824. clinging

  825. to God.

  826. We read

  827. in the passage

  828. that Moses

  829. is a hired hand

  830. and he basically

  831. is subservient

  832. to his father-in-law.

  833. So we see

  834. that God

  835. took Moses

  836. who for 40 years

  837. was the best educated

  838. the wealthiest

  839. in the middle

  840. of Pharaoh's court

  841. and he took

  842. him to this

  843. desert place

  844. for 40 years

  845. to teach him

  846. to teach him

  847. about himself.

  848. It took 40 years

  849. to get Pharaoh's

  850. court away from him.

  851. I've thought about

  852. this often

  853. as I've gone

  854. through the desert

  855. times

  856. and I wonder

  857. how often

  858. and how long

  859. many of us

  860. have been working

  861. in Pharaoh's court

  862. today.

  863. And I wonder

  864. if God

  865. were really

  866. to use us

  867. and to use us

  868. in mighty ways

  869. how many times

  870. would he have

  871. to separate us

  872. remove us

  873. take us

  874. to the desert

  875. places

  876. where all we can

  877. do is

  878. trust him

  879. cling to him

  880. be careful

  881. how you pray

  882. when you're

  883. in the desert

  884. times.

  885. Often my prayers

  886. are get me

  887. out of here

  888. right away.

  889. This is

  890. uncomfortable

  891. this hurts

  892. I need

  893. relief

  894. get me

  895. out of here.

  896. But what we see

  897. in the scripture

  898. is that God

  899. has this amazing

  900. thing that he

  901. wants to do

  902. to your story

  903. he's weaving

  904. your story

  905. into his story

  906. he's making

  907. something wonderful

  908. something amazing

  909. sometimes the only

  910. way he can do

  911. that

  912. is by taking

  913. you into the

  914. desert

  915. and showing

  916. your heart.

  917. In the desert

  918. we learn about

  919. ourselves

  920. but we learn

  921. about God

  922. I mean this

  923. passage is all

  924. about God

  925. in the desolate

  926. places

  927. we learn in

  928. verse 14

  929. that he

  930. is who he

  931. is

  932. that he's

  933. holy

  934. he's

  935. separated

  936. nothing

  937. influences

  938. him

  939. he's

  940. dependent

  941. upon

  942. nothing

  943. he's

  944. totally

  945. other

  946. we learn

  947. in the passages

  948. that he

  949. is holy

  950. it's the first

  951. time that that's

  952. ever used

  953. in verse 5

  954. in all of

  955. scripture

  956. but Moses

  957. knows what it

  958. means right

  959. away

  960. because he

  961. doesn't even

  962. want to look

  963. at God

  964. but he bows

  965. his head

  966. and he drops

  967. to his feet

  968. we learn

  969. that he's

  970. the God

  971. of your

  972. fathers

  973. the God

  974. of Abraham

  975. the God

  976. of Isaac

  977. the God

  978. of Jacob

  979. the God

  980. of your

  981. father

  982. and what

  983. he's saying

  984. there is

  985. I'm not

  986. this God

  987. that's way

  988. out there

  989. but I'm

  990. a God

  991. who's

  992. right here

  993. now the

  994. people would

  995. never have

  996. understood that

  997. because all

  998. the time

  999. they thought

  1000. that God

  1001. was out

  1002. there

  1003. God

  1004. was out

  1005. there

  1006. don't bring

  1007. him

  1008. close

  1009. if you bring

  1010. him

  1011. close

  1012. you're

  1013. going

  1014. to get

  1015. destroyed

  1016. don't

  1017. look

  1018. at him

  1019. or you're

  1020. going

  1021. to die

  1022. but what

  1023. God

  1024. is saying

  1025. here

  1026. is that

  1027. he's

  1028. knowable

  1029. and he's

  1030. personal

  1031. and he wants

  1032. to do

  1033. something amazing

  1034. in your life

  1035. and so when you

  1036. go into the

  1037. desert times

  1038. what I'm learning

  1039. is I don't

  1040. want to pray

  1041. I want to be

  1042. careful how I

  1043. pray

  1044. my heart

  1045. says pray

  1046. why

  1047. why

  1048. why is this

  1049. happening to me

  1050. why are you

  1051. allowing this

  1052. to happen

  1053. why is this

  1054. person so mean

  1055. why is these

  1056. things not

  1057. going the way

  1058. I want

  1059. them to

  1060. do

  1061. but what

  1062. I've

  1063. learned is

  1064. what I

  1065. should be

  1066. asking is

  1067. what

  1068. God what

  1069. what are you

  1070. trying to teach

  1071. me in this

  1072. God what are you

  1073. trying to teach

  1074. me about

  1075. yourself

  1076. God what are you

  1077. trying to teach

  1078. me about

  1079. me

  1080. what do you

  1081. what do you

  1082. want me to

  1083. what am I

  1084. supposed to do

  1085. with this

  1086. how am I

  1087. supposed to

  1088. glorify you

  1089. don't be so

  1090. quick in the

  1091. desert I'm

  1092. warning this

  1093. because we

  1094. don't want to

  1095. keep going into

  1096. the desert we

  1097. want to be in

  1098. the desert and

  1099. God teach us and

  1100. we say well I

  1101. learned that that's

  1102. great I don't

  1103. need to go back

  1104. there again

  1105. but don't be so

  1106. quick to say I

  1107. need to get out

  1108. of here because

  1109. God wants to

  1110. teach you an

  1111. incredible question

  1112. and I think that

  1113. question is what

  1114. not why

  1115. another thing that

  1116. I've been learning

  1117. in these desert

  1118. times in my 38

  1119. years is as I

  1120. listen to God and

1121. I try to figure out

  1122. where is he working

  1123. here and I feel

  1124. very disappointed

  1125. sometimes when my

  1126. lines don't match

  1127. up and what I

  1128. realize is I'm

  1129. disappointed because

  1130. God is not writing

1131. the story the way I

  1132. want it written

  1133. I mean in my

  1134. mind I had this

  1135. very specific idea

  1136. of how my life

  1137. is to be lived

  1138. what's going to

  1139. happen when is it

  1140. going to happen and

  1141. when that does not

  1142. happen I become

  1143. disappointed the

  1144. story isn't being

1145. played out the way I

1146. want it to be God

  1147. where are you don't

1148. you even see me and

1149. we see in verse 24

  1150. and 25 that he's

  1151. the God who hears

  1152. that he's the God

  1153. who is present

  1154. that he remembers

  1155. his covenant he

  1156. remembers his

  1157. relationship with his

  1158. people he remembers

  1159. his relationship with

  1160. you and I I mean

  1161. sometimes we just

  1162. think well I'm

  1163. married to God

  1164. that's what scripture

  1165. says but every once

1166. in a while God just

  1167. forgets his ring or

  1168. he forgets to look

  1169. down on his hand

  1170. because life gets

  1171. really difficult and

  1172. really bad but the

  1173. scripture says here

  1174. that God remembers

  1175. his covenant

  1176. that there's never a

  1177. time that he forgets

  1178. about you there's

1179. never a time that he

1180. says oh yeah I forgot

1181. all about Tobin yeah I

1182. need to go back and see

  1183. how he's doing there

  1184. but that he's always

  1185. involved he's always

  1186. working in verse 7

1187. which I think is one of

  1188. my favorite verses it

1189. says the Lord said I

  1190. have seen the affliction

1191. of my people that are in

  1192. Egypt I have given

  1193. heed to their cry

  1194. because of the task

  1195. masters I'm aware of

  1196. their suffering so I

1197. am going to come down

1198. and the words you see

1199. there is he's the God

1200. who sees he's the God

1201. who hears he's the God

1202. who knows he's the God

1203. who acts that in the

  1204. midst of the desert

1205. time in the midst of

  1206. things when things

  1207. aren't working up in

1208. the midst when I feel

  1209. the tension I come

1210. back to this truth and

  1211. I realize that it's God

1212. and he's there he sees

1213. he knows he hears and

  1214. he acts and the

  1215. tension is with me

  1216. sometimes that he's

1217. not doing it the way

1218. that I want it done or

  1219. I feel like he's not

  1220. there maybe instead of

  1221. praying God why aren't

1222. you here where are you

  1223. how come these things

  1224. are happening what's

1225. going on here God I

  1226. just feel like you're

1227. not with me here maybe

1228. we should be asking God

1229. where are you in this

  1230. he says really

  1231. specifically it's a very

  1232. special word in verse

1233. eight he says I have

1234. come down to them in

  1235. Hebrew translated into

1236. the Greek that word is

1237. Advent it's the word we

  1238. get our Christmas Advent

  1239. from and what he's

  1240. telling the people of

1241. God as they're on this

  1242. journey as things get

  1243. difficult that God is

  1244. making himself known in

1245. your life right now in

1246. Moses story it was a

1247. burning bush there was a

1248. bush burning and it was

1249. the presence of God look

1250. what he says here in

1251. verse three the angel of

1252. the Lord in verse two

1253. appeared to him in a

  1254. blazing fire from the

1255. midst of a bush and he

  1256. looked and beheld the

1257. bush was burning yet the

1258. fire yet the bush was not

1259. consumed so Moses said I

1260. must turn aside now all

  1261. throughout scripture we see

1262. that God is making himself

  1263. known all throughout

1264. scripture we see that God

1265. is entering into our lives

1266. he says I'm in the bush he

1267. says it I'm coming down and

1268. the question is do we look

  1269. for him I think what I'm

1270. learning in the journey is

1271. instead of saying where are

1272. you or why are you allowing me

1273. to go through this the

1274. question I ask is God where

1275. are you because your word

  1276. says that you're here

  1277. somewhere your word says

1278. you're working in the midst

1279. of me getting fired your

1280. work says that you're here in

1281. the midst of my family life out

1282. of control your word says

  1283. you're here when I just got

  1284. this incredibly bad doctor's

1285. report your word says you're

1286. here when my best friend has

1287. left me where are you what are

1288. you what are you trying to show

1289. me in this how am I supposed to

1290. react to this make yourself

1291. known to me help me help me to

1292. see you more clearly in the

1293. desert times we're going to be

1294. tempted to say what the heck is

1295. going on and where are you I

1296. feel like I'm looking for you in

1297. a crowd and I cannot find you

1298. but this passage says that God is

1299. right beside us and he wants a

1300. relationship with us and the

1301. question we should be asking is

1302. where the Bible always says that

1303. God comes into your life right

1304. now he wants to do two things he

1305. wants to save you from something

1306. verse 8 says he wants to save us

1307. from Egypt he wants to save us save

1308. us from slavery he wants to save us

1309. from bondage and he wants to save

1310. us to something verse 8 says he

1311. wants to save us to a land flowing with

1312. milk and honey he wants to save us to a

1313. place where we will be safe and whole and

1314. fixed one of the things I'm learning in

1315. the desert places is that God's story

1316. always ends in hope did you know that it's

1317. very interesting I'm watching movies

1318. nowadays and I went to the Hunger Games

1319. with my wife I'm not recommending that if

1320. you have kids don't take your kids it's

1321. one of the first movies I've seen lately

1322. that has some kind of hope in it but it

1323. really doesn't end in hope because you

1324. know something bad is going to happen but

1325. hope is a very specific Christian message I

1326. mean my wife calls me a geek because I

1327. like to read and I like to read ancient

1328. stories and things like that in Greek

1329. plays and things like that and what you

1330. see about the Greeks are two things one

1331. is they only have two types of stories they

1332. have comedies and they have tragedies

1333. comedies are fun and funny but they're not

1334. real life tragedies are not fun but they

1335. are real life and until Christ's time this

1336. was how all stories were laid out and then

1337. we have God who advents into our life and

1338. for the first time in human history we see

1339. this idea of hope and so the question I

1340. want to ask ourselves is where where's the

1341. hope God where are you in the midst of

1342. this where are you working how can I see

1343. you please let me see you what where and

1344. will and for me this is the biggest

1345. challenge for me as I walk with Christ

1346. when I enter into the desert I come back

1347. to verses 3 and 4 I want you to read them

1348. with me really quickly so Moses said I must

1349. turn aside now and see this marvelous

1350. sight why the bush is not burned up then

1351. the Lord saw that he turned aside to look

1352. God called to him from the midst of the

1353. bush and said Moses Moses and he said

1354. here I am I think the question we have to

1355. struggle with is the question will will we

1356. turn aside will we meet with God will we

1357. spend time with him because to be honest

1358. with you sometimes in my day I'm so busy

1359. even in the midst of the desolate times I

1360. just don't have time to spend time with

1361. God because I have so many things on my to-do

1362. list but the message here in the desert is

1363. really clear God turned and spoke to Moses

1364. after Moses noticed him and moved towards

1365. him there's a really strong cause and

1366. effect thing happening here you see that

1367. God spoke to him after he saw Moses turn to

1368. him and in this passage there's two groups

1369. of people there's the people in captivity

1370. they're crying out to God in Hebrew it

  1371. says they're they're praying they're

1372. God why aren't you here what is going on

1373. for 400 years and they have Moses it's

1374. interesting because Moses isn't crying out

1375. for God I mean they're both working in the

1376. desert the people are in the desert and

1377. they're desolate in captivity Moses is in a

1378. desert and he's desolate in captivity the

1379. only difference is that Moses doesn't know

1380. it and God comes to Moses and he shows

1381. himself to Moses in a desolate place and

1382. Moses makes a choice and he turns to him

1383. and spends time with him one of the

1384. biggest lessons I continue to learn after

1385. 38 years in the deserts is that I have a

1386. choice the choice is will I look for God

1387. where he is and when I see him there will I

1388. turn to him and spend time with him will I

1389. pray to him will I spend time in his word

1390. will I come back to community will I be

1391. involved in what God is doing there's a

1392. choice as we journey with Christ in the

1393. midst of this life our stories are being woven

1394. together with him he wants to change us and

1395. make us more like his son in the midst of this

1396. he's trying to show us why he's trying to show us

1397. where but the question is will will we spend time with

1398. him will we come to him will we allow him to change us I

  1399. don't know what's happening in your story today I don't know

1400. where you are I think some of us think of prayer as something

1401. that we just do in a vacuum or we do when it's difficult but

1402. the passage says that prayer is something that we do all the

1403. time because God is with us all the time that God is personal he

1404. wants to be in a relationship with us he wants to be with us in the good times

1405. and he wants to be with us in the difficult times he wants to start a

1406. relationship with us and the question today is will we will we allow him to

1407. have that time with us will we turn to him when things are difficult will we

1408. trust him will we allow him to change us in the difficult times

1409. where are you on your journey my prayer is is you don't need these

1410. points right now but I know that someday you will and my hope is is you will come

1411. back to them and allow God to change you father we just thank you for this day we

1412. thank you for your goodness in our life we thank you for your mercy we thank you

1413. that you desire to take us to a new place a place flowing with milk and honey

1414. father we thank you that even in the midst of the chaos which is our life in our

1415. world that you're speaking to us you're speaking to us in burning bushes

1416. you're speaking to us in sunrises you're speaking to us in worship songs

1417. you're speaking to us through friends you're speaking to us through relatives

1418. but I just pray as you speak to us that we will turn aside to you that we will spend time

1419. with you we will allow you to take us to these places that only there you can change us and

1420. make us the type of people you want us to be only there can you heal us and strip away the things

1421. that cling to us and drag us down only there can you show us who you really are that you are the God

1422. who's noble that you are the God who desires to have a relationship with us that you are the God

1423. who's holy and just that you are the God who withheld nothing to bring us back to you

1424. that in a poker game you were all in and you laid it all there to win us back

1425. father we just thank you for this day and for your word may we be people that worship you

1426. that love you that trust you and we pray these things your son jesus name amen

1427. amen i'm gonna ask you to sit down just for one minute i remember more and more than that

1428. and i'm gonna ask uh josh and trish to come up here and so uh we're uh and my wife

1429. and uh so you know when we started the the church uh i shared this at a staff gathering last night

1430. uh josh and trish this is their last sunday here for a while so he's being called back uh by his

1431. mission agency to the states and then to the philippines and so we have been so uh blessed to have

1432. them steal them for this year and a half two years and so when we started the church i had a couple

1433. prayer requests i actually had three miracles i wanted from god because i we were still like

1434. god we feel like we want you need to do this but i need these things from you or i just can't do it

1435. and so my first uh miracle that i prayed for was someone who could come up and preach besides myself

1436. because i know that you get tired of just hearing me all the time and the goal wasn't just to have one

1437. pastor or someone sharing god's word because we want to multiply and plant other churches

1438. and so one day i met with josh at a greasy spoon place that no longer exists and he says trish and

1439. i have asked our mission agency whether we can join you and we we are going to join you and so for me

1440. that was the first miracle that god gave me personally and us as a church to move forward and to plant this

1441. church and so uh you guys we're going to incredibly uh miss you massively miss you as we say in the

1442. office and uh and so uh i'm going to pray for you but i wanted to uh give you uh this plaque so this is

1443. i think this is the first one of this type so we'll we'll so it's uh and i need to put some white behind

1444. it so i can read it um it says uh founding members joshua and patricia hammond found

1445. members of watermark community church so that's the first founding member one we've ever done so you

1446. guys are uh thank you for your partnership to watermark community church in hong kong spreading

1447. the gospel of the lord jesus christ your faithfulness commitment and sacrifice have resulted in countless

1448. people being influenced for our savior we love you so we want to

1449. so we want to uh give you that and i'm going to ask the elders uh the two elders we we brought on

1450. elders last week and so we had a huge week last week so again you're going to want to pick up one

1451. of these and we're going to just lay our hands on you guys and commission you and uh and pray for you

1452. and just pray for safe travels and safe return in what god's doing in your life so let me

1453. if you guys would join us father guys thank you for uh the hammond family thank you just you brought

1454. them here for this uh amazing special time and so uh we have been incredibly blessed by their them as a

1455. couple and as a family and with their kiddos and just to continue watching them grow with two boys and a

1456. girl on the way uh and many more to come uh we just thank you for bringing them to us and what a

1457. blessing it is we we part uh in sadness but we know that you are sending them to great things as they

1458. go out to equip and train uh pastors and planters in the philippines and beyond and so we just we pray

1459. that you would watch over them guard them keep them safe and uh father we we love you and thank you for

1460. these amazing gifts you've given us and we pray all these things in your son jesus name amen thanks guys

1461. and they'll be around out back or out in the front so you can grab some time with them

1462. and uh please uh just yeah they they're our first miracle so let's yeah also uh let me just really

1463. quickly just two things i want to share up here really quickly the first one is this in your bulletin

1464. the very first uh thing right there there's going to be a woman's of watermark gathering it's a panel

1465. discussion it's this wednesday from 9 30 to 11 30 they're going to have women at all life stages

1466. single with kids with kids who are causing trouble and with kids who've gone and they're probably still

1467. causing financial trouble to dads and things like that so that will be this wednesday from 9 30 to 11 30

1468. want to highly encourage you women guys you can't go there but send your wife uh want to highly

1469. encourage you to go to the community center from 9 30 to 11 30 for that time of fellowship also right

1470. after this class right after this service we're going to have a baptism class and so if you haven't

1471. signed up for the baptism class it's not too late to do that and so please come and see me

1472. or franklin who'll be leading it and so we want we're going to do a big baptism celebration on may

1473. 6th so we're going to bring out that sylvia and millen are laughing at me back there uh so we'll

1474. bring out our big uh kiddie pool out back we spared no expense in how we do baptism but if he uh

1475. scripture says it as a follower of christ the first act of obedience is to be baptized and so if you are

1476. a christ follower you've invited christ into your life and you haven't been baptized and you are part

1477. of this church we want you to be a part of this because this is a family event and a family gathering

1478. and also on tuesday nights at 7 30 the love and respect marriage group is gathering we've only done

1479. one session so there's time for you to gather there were 20 or 19 couples last tuesday it was an amazing

1480. amazing thing so husbands be a good husband and invite your wife on a date night for the next five

1481. tuesday nights wife be a good wife and say yes husband i'll go with you okay uh and with that let

1482. me just pray for us father we just thank you for your goodness in our life we thank you that um

1483. we thank you that your story is being written all around us it's being written in captivity

1484. it's being written in bondage it's being written through burning bushes it's being written through

1485. people crying out it's being written through people being faithful and everywhere you're speaking to us

1486. you're here and you've called us into a relationship into a covenant with you and where we just pray as

1487. we come before you as your people that we would realize just how amazing that privilege is

1488. that we'd realize in a desert and difficult times that it's not why but it's what you're trying to

1489. teach us and do in us and it's not why aren't you here but it's where are you because you've said that

1490. you're always there that you are the god who sees you are the god who hears you're the god who knows

1491. you're the god who acts so maybe we cry out where lord where are you help us to see the burning bush

1492. help us to see your hand help us to meet you where you're meeting and lord is the will will we turn

1493. aside and i pray as a church that we would always turn aside to meet you i pray as families that we

1494. would always turn aside to meet you i pray as singles we'd always turn aside to meet you because

1495. you want to talk to us moment by moment and so we come and we worship you and we praise you and we

1496. love you we pray all these things your son jesus name amen god bless you and have a great week
