  1. Good morning.

  2. Good morning.

  3. I just want to say I feel really appreciative to be able to worship with all of you this morning.

  4. It's just been amazing so far.

  5. So as we look at the book of Galatians today,

  6. we're actually going to be reminded of the struggles of the early church

  7. with those who came into its midst,

  8. tried to replace the gospel message of our Lord Jesus Christ with a false gospel.

  9. And as we look around in our world today,

  10. I think we all realize that we have the same struggles with this.

  11. We may never forget how easily we can lose our focus off the true hope of Jesus.

  12. So please follow me along this morning

  13. with the responsive reading found on the screens behind me.

  14. Father God, the lie of empty, dead religion is that

  15. if we can be good enough or better than other people,

  16. then you will love us.

  17. But you are not impressed with our pitiful attempts to appear righteous.

  18. We can do nothing to earn your grace,

  19. and we are no better than anybody else.

  20. It's only through your Son,

  21. His life,

  22. His death,

  23. and His resurrection

  24. that we can be made right with you.

  25. Save me from religion

  26. and all its self-righteousness.

  27. Forgive me for a cheapened view of grace.

  28. You see into the depths of our hearts,

  29. and you know the reality of who we are.

  30. Our deepest thoughts and darkest sins are not hidden from you.

  31. Change my heart.

  32. Give me the desire to live a life surrendered to you.

  33. You don't desire a life filled with empty routines

  34. or deeds that look good on the outside.

  35. But Jesus died and rose to bring us into a living relationship with you,

  36. that you would transform us from the inside out.

  37. Help me to know you.

  38. Help me to love you.

  39. Help me to serve you with every part of my life.

  40. May your compassion and grace transform our lives

  41. and the lives of 95% of Hong Kong who don't yet know you.

  42. Amen.

  43. The scripture reading for today comes from the book of Exodus

  44. and the book of Galatians chapter 1.

    Galatians 1 chapter mention

  45. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  46. As Pharaoh drew near,

  47. the sons of Israel looked,

  48. and behold,

  49. the Egyptians were marching after them.

  50. They became very frightened.

  51. So the sons of Israel cried out to the Lord.

  52. Then they said to Moses,

  53. Is it because there were no graves in Egypt

  54. that have you taken us away to die in the wilderness?

  55. Why have you dealt with us in this way,

  56. bringing us out of Egypt?

  57. Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt,

  58. saying,

  59. Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians?

  60. For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians

  61. than to die in the wilderness.

  62. Then in Galatians we read,

  63. Paul,

  64. an apostle not sent from man nor through the agency of man,

  65. but through Jesus Christ and God the Father,

  66. who raised him from the dead,

  67. and not the brethren who are with me.

  68. To the churches of Galatia,

  69. grace to you and peace from God our Father

  70. and the Lord Jesus Christ,

  71. who gave himself for our sins

  72. so that he might rescue us from this present evil age,

  73. according to the will of our God and Father,

  74. to whom be the glory forevermore.

  75. Amen.

  76. I'm amazed that you are so quickly deserting him

  77. who called you by the grace of Christ

  78. for a different gospel,

  79. which is really not another,

  80. only there are some who are disturbing you

  81. and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

  82. But even if we,

  83. or an angel from heaven,

  84. should preach to you a gospel

  85. contrary to what we have preached to you,

  86. he is to be accursed.

  87. As we have said before,

  88. so I say again now,

  89. if any man is preaching to you a gospel

  90. contrary to what you have received,

  91. he is to be accursed.

  92. For am I now seeking the favor of men

  93. or of God?

  94. Or am I striving to please men?

  95. If I was still striving to please men,

  96. I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

  97. This is the reading of God's word.

  98. Did you hear amen to that worship time?

  99. Amen.

  100. Was that amazing?

  101. That was amazing.

  102. How you guys doing?

  103. I get to say that at least once in a while, right?

  104. Hey, we are,

  105. we're continuing our,

  106. see if I can find a place for all my things up here.

  107. We are continuing,

  108. or actually we're starting a journey

  109. in the book of Galatians.

  110. We're putting Luke on hold

  111. because we feel like there's a couple things

  112. in this book of Galatians

  113. that builds,

  114. and it's something that we want to

  115. be talking about

  116. and getting a foundation down in our life.

  117. The idea of grace

  118. and mercy

  119. in the gospel.

  120. I don't know where you are

  121. on your journey in here.

  122. As I come in here,

  123. we pray a lot

  124. for the message

  125. and for the worship

  126. and for every,

  127. I don't know if you know

  128. that every one of you

  129. have been prayed for

  130. before you even get here,

  131. that we pray

  132. that God would speak to you,

  133. that you would make it.

  134. What a crazy morning.

  135. Once I woke outside,

  136. I saw ducks floating by my house.

  137. It was raining so heavily.

  138. A figure of speech,

  139. I didn't really see ducks,

  140. but someone will ask me that.

  141. Ducks in Hong Kong?

  142. Where are they?

  143. Lunch.

  144. You'll catch it later on

  145. after the coffee, okay?

  146. But we realize

  147. that every one of us

  148. is on this journey,

  149. and God has us on this journey,

  150. and our stories are being told,

  151. and our stories are interweaving.

  152. First, they're interweaving

  153. with God's story.

  154. God's taking our thread,

  155. and he's interweaving

  156. our story with his story,

  157. but he's also interweaving

  158. our stories with each other,

  159. and it's amazing to see

  160. what God does in people's lives.

  161. I mean, to me,

  162. that's the most amazing thing

  163. as a pastor.

  164. You come in,

  165. you see people's lives

  166. changed by mercy.

  167. You see people's lives

  168. changed by grace,

  169. and as we talk about this journey,

  170. I want to talk to you

  171. that as far as I'm concerned

  172. and with the elders

  173. and the leaders,

  174. that we're always going to use

  175. God's word

  176. as the filter for everything,

  177. that we're not going to

  178. come in here and say,

  179. okay, let's put something else

  180. on top of God's words

  181. like our feelings

  182. or our emotions

  183. and filter God's words

  184. through that,

  185. but as long as we're

  186. on this journey together,

  187. we realize that God's word

  188. is God's word.

  189. It doesn't need to be

  190. changed or altered,

  191. and it's what we go to

  192. when we have problems

  193. and things we want

  194. to figure out in your life,

  195. and I don't know

  196. how you feel about that

  197. because that should

  198. really bother you

  199. at some stage in your life.

  200. I mean, sometimes I read

  201. these things,

  202. and it just,

  203. it drives me crazy

  204. what's written in here.

  205. Sometimes I read this,

  206. and I try to think about

  207. how am I going to apply this

  208. to my life,

  209. and I think about

  210. the sacrifice

  211. and what it means

  212. to trust and to love,

  213. and it just,

  214. it drives me crazy,

  215. and it's an incredible challenge,

  216. and it bothers me sometimes.

  217. It bothers me sometimes

  218. when I do these sermons

  219. because I have to be

  220. thinking about them

  221. for three months,

  222. and you guys just think

  223. about them for an hour,

  224. and then you forget

  225. when you leave here.

  226. Probably.

  227. I have to think about it

  228. for a couple months,

  229. and it drives me crazy,

  230. but I realize that God

  231. wants to speak to us,

  232. and if it doesn't drive you crazy,

  233. then maybe your God

  234. is too small.

  235. If something that I say in here

  236. doesn't offend you,

  237. and we're talking from God's word,

  238. then maybe your relationship

  239. with God is not

  240. what you thought it was.

  241. Maybe your view of God

  242. is so small,

  243. and you can just manage him

  244. in a bottle,

  245. so no matter what's said,

  246. you can compromise that

  247. and deal with that

  248. and not think about it,

  249. and your God is too small.

  250. I got this letter this week,

  251. and I asked permission

  252. to read it,

  253. so I know I share stories.

  254. So if you send me a letter,

  255. I usually get,

  256. not nice letters,

  257. but if you send me

  258. a nice letter,

  259. and it's in line with things,

  260. I just think this is interesting.

  261. He says,

  262. Dear Pastor Tobin,

  263. I do not normally write,

  264. but I feel like I have to

  265. after your last sermon.

  266. I've been going to Watermark

  267. since almost the beginning,

  268. and my family loves it.

  269. Don't try to figure out

  270. who it is,

  271. but as I sat listening

  272. to your last message,

  273. I realized that I'm lost.

  274. I'm stuck in Egypt,

  275. surrounded by my comfortable life,

  276. my money,

  277. my pride,

  278. my idols.

  279. I'm actually a prince

  280. in the land,

  281. just like Moses was.

  282. I remember a sermon

  283. you talked about

  284. on a moral therapeutic deism

  285. a while back,

  286. and I listened to it again,

  287. and I realized

  288. that that was my faith

  289. in my God.

  290. I taught this

  291. like six months ago,

  292. so I went back

  293. to the notes,

  294. and I printed out

  295. a PowerPoint for it,

  296. and we said in this sermon

  297. that according to Christian Smith,

  298. who's a sociologist

  299. at Notre Dame,

  300. he said the primary expression

  301. of faith today,

  302. the fastest going religion

  303. in the world,

  304. is moral therapeutic deism,

  305. and it's characterized

  306. by five beliefs.

  307. The first belief,

  308. basically,

  309. is there's a God

  310. who created earth,

  311. and he watches over it.

  312. The second belief is

  313. God wants people

  314. to be nice,

  315. fair,

  316. and good,

  317. as is taught in the Bible

  318. and most other religions.

  319. The central goal of life

  320. is to be happy

  321. and feel good about yourself.

  322. God doesn't need

  323. to be involved

  324. in your life

  325. except when there's

  326. a problem that needs

  327. heavenly performance enhancement,

  328. like you really gotta pray.

  329. You've lost your job,

  330. but besides that,

  331. you don't really want

  332. God in your life

  333. because he causes you

  334. to do things

  335. that you might not want to do

  336. or you might have

  337. to give away something

  338. or you might have

  339. to change your attitude,

  340. and the fourth part of that

  341. is good people

  342. go to heaven

  343. when they die,

  344. and we compare that

  345. to the gospel message,

  346. and our friend says

  347. that that is

  348. what he lived.

  349. It's taken me

  350. a long time

  351. to realize this

  352. and even to dare

  353. to admit it

  354. because I am surrounded

  355. by family,

  356. friends,

  357. and a culture

  358. that values safety,

  359. security,

  360. pragmatism

  361. more than obedience

  362. and holiness.

  363. I'm haunted

  364. by the passages

  365. where Jesus asked

  366. the rich young ruler

  367. to give up everything

  368. to follow him.

  369. If Jesus were to ask me that,

  370. I would laugh

  371. and walk away,

  372. but I'm sad about that.

  373. In my soul,

  374. I know there is life

  375. and freedom there,

  376. but I'm still stuck

  377. in Egypt.

  378. I'm worried about

  379. what it will say

  380. or what I will say

  381. to a holy God

  382. who asked me

  383. to justify my life

  384. on his accountant books.

  385. You talk a lot

  386. about being on a journey

  387. and taking steps

  388. towards the Lord.

  389. Lord,

  390. this letter

  391. is my first step.

  392. Please pray for me

  393. as I look forward

  394. to continuing

  395. this journey with you.

  396. God is amazing.

  397. His grace,

  398. His love,

  399. His mercy

  400. beyond me.

  401. Your fellow traveler.

  402. We're all on a journey.

  403. We're all seeking God.

  404. We're all asking questions.

  405. And what I've realized

  406. as we go on this journey

  407. is that whenever

  408. the gospel is preached,

  409. and we're going to see that.

  410. We've been talking about that

  411. in Luke.

  412. Whenever the gospel

  413. is preached and taught,

  414. amazing things happen

  415. in people's lives.

  416. We see people's lives change,

  417. but then what is typical

  418. of human beings,

  419. of Christ followers,

  420. we're lazy,

  421. we're creatures of habit,

  422. we're fickle.

  423. And often we go back and forth

  424. and we go back and forth

  425. between two different types

  426. of faith.

  427. Two different types of extremes,

  428. two different types of gospel.

  429. It was true today,

  430. and it was true in Paul's day

  431. when he preaches the gospel

  432. in Galatians.

  433. Some of us,

  434. when we hear the gospel,

  435. think it sounds too good,

  436. too easy to be true,

  437. impossible.

  438. What's the catch

  439. is what people often say to me.

  440. No such thing as grace

  441. and mercy like that.

  442. Nothing is for free.

  443. And so we start to do things

  444. when we hear this,

  445. if we're like this.

  446. We feel like we want

  447. to help God save us,

  448. and sometimes we even add

  449. religious activities

  450. to our lives to save us.

  451. Sometimes we can even

  452. get to a place

  453. where we hold on

  454. to these activities

  455. more than our relationship

  456. with God.

  457. Our life is more about

  458. doing things

  459. than about our relationship

  460. with Jesus.

  461. Jesus.

  462. And if we head down

  463. this road,

  464. you're going to get

  465. exhausted.

  466. If you try to help

  467. God save you,

  468. or you try to help

  469. God justify

  470. why he saved you,

  471. you're going to get

  472. worn out.

  473. You're going to get tired

  474. trying to do things,

  475. and eventually you're going

  476. to get bitter

  477. and angry.

  478. My fear as a pastor

  479. is that many of us

  480. will do all these activities

  481. and as an end

  482. to themselves,

  483. but not because

  484. we want to know

  485. Jesus more

  486. or because we love him.

  487. The question we have

  488. to ask ourselves

  489. as we do things

  490. is,

  491. are we doing these things

  492. because we love God

  493. and we want to know

  494. him deeper

  495. and more truly?

  496. John 6 is an amazing

  497. passage I was reading

  498. over this week.

  499. In this passage,

  500. Jesus is talking

  501. to the Pharisees,

  502. the most learned people

  503. in his culture.

  504. They knew everything.

  505. They were intelligent.

  506. They had all the

  507. biblical answers.

  508. And Jesus looked at them

  509. and he said,

  510. guys,

  511. you study in vain.

  512. You know all the answers.

  513. You know all the right things.

  514. You know how to say everything,

  515. but in the end,

  516. you've missed me.

  517. You've missed grace.

  518. You've missed mercy.

  519. You've missed God.

  520. Some of us,

  521. I think we're so busy

  522. with stuff for God

  523. that we,

  524. I mean,

  525. we're going to five

  526. Bible studies a week.

  527. Some people in here

  528. are going to three churches

  529. this Sunday.

  530. If you're going to three churches

  531. this Sunday,

  532. stop it.

  533. Don't go to three churches.

  534. Go to one church.

  535. If this isn't the best church,

  536. go to another church.

  537. There's a lot of great churches

  538. I can recommend to you.

  539. I know the pastors

  540. are great guys

  541. that are walking with God,

  542. but don't go to three churches

  543. on Sunday.

  544. It's crazy.

  545. Stay in one church

  546. and get involved in that.

  547. Some of us are doing

  548. hundreds of religious activities

  549. a year,

  550. and I think it's not

  551. because we love God,

  552. but I think it's because

  553. we're actually trying

  554. to get a love for God.

  555. And we feel like

  556. if we do these things,

  557. if we are busy,

  558. then God will love us

  559. and we'll love him.

  560. And what I've seen in my life

  561. is that people often

  562. just give up on Jesus.

  563. They give up on church.

  564. We said this church

  565. was planted for the church,

  566. the unchurched,

  567. and the de-churched.

  568. And the de-churched

  569. are those people.

  570. They grew up maybe

  571. in a Catholic background.

  572. They've gone to Catholic school.

  573. They've been told

  574. all these things

  575. they want to do.

  576. And they've done them

  577. over and over and over again.

  578. And finally they get to this point

  579. where they're just so tired

  580. and worn out.

  581. And there's still this emptiness

  582. in their soul,

  583. and they don't know

  584. what that emptiness is

  585. and they just give up.

  586. And they come in to me

  587. and they say,

  588. I've given up on church.

  589. I've given up on Jesus.

  590. And I hear their story

  591. and what I realize

  592. is that they never,

  593. they never knew him.

  594. But they've been so busy

  595. doing things

  596. and trying to fill

  597. those activities

  598. within knowing Jesus

  599. that they don't even

  600. really know him.

  601. I think in reality

  602. when it comes to many of us,

  603. when we become Christians,

  604. we have this restlessness,

  605. this emptiness,

  606. this void

  607. in our lives.

  608. I mean,

  609. we hear the gospel

  610. and it saves us

  611. and we know

  612. that we have this

  613. fire insurance,

  614. but we wonder,

  615. is it good enough

  616. to get us on

  617. through the journey?

  618. We invite Christ

  619. into our hearts

  620. and we allow him

  621. to save us,

  622. but we wonder,

  623. is he enough

  624. to walk with me every day?

  625. Can I trust him?

  626. I mean,

  627. I'm just sharing

  628. from personal experiences,

  629. okay?

  630. Is he really good?

  631. Can I trust him

  632. in his journey?

  633. Is he enough

  634. to get me through there?

  635. And sometimes

  636. I think we forget

  637. that the gospel

  638. is the power

  639. not just to save us,

  640. but it's the gospel

  641. is the power

  642. that keeps us going

  643. throughout all of our life.

  644. And it moves us

  645. through this journey.

  646. It's funny

  647. that Katie quoted

  648. this C.S. Lewis quote.

  649. I was going to quote

  650. the exact same quote.

  651. Because he tells

  652. this very interesting part

  653. about restlessness

  654. in our soul.

  655. In the book

  656. C.S. Lewis wrote,

  657. it's very famous,

  658. we've quoted it many times,

  659. it's called

  660. The Screwtape Letters.

  661. The story of Screwtape

  662. is there's this

  663. high-ranking demon

  664. and he's talking

  665. to one of his minions

  666. who's terrorizing

  667. this person.

  668. And he's giving this guy

  669. a strategy

  670. against Christians,

  671. against you and I.

  672. And the demon says this,

  673. he says,

  674. you have to keep them

  675. in a state of mind

  676. that I call

  677. Christianity

  678. and.

  679. A-N-D.

  680. Christianity

  681. and.

  682. In Lewis' day,

  683. it was Christianity

  684. and the new

  685. psychology.

  686. Christianity

  687. and the new

  688. order.

  689. Christianity

  690. and

  691. faith healing.

  692. If you can just

  693. get them to add

  694. something else

  695. to their faith,

  696. get them to add

  697. something else

  698. to Jesus,

  699. get them to add

  700. something else

  701. to the gospel,

  702. and if you do this,

  703. you void out

  704. everything

  705. and they miss out

  706. on the power of God.

  707. Is that,

  708. I just thought

  709. that's amazing.

  710. I mean,

  711. I thought about that

  712. today.

  713. If C.S. Lewis

  714. were around

  715. now

  716. and he was writing,

  717. he would probably

  718. add different things

  719. for his end.

  720. He would probably

  721. add Christianity

  722. in coolness.

  723. Christianity

  724. in self-affirmation.

  725. Christianity

  726. and self-improvement.

  727. Christianity

  728. and personal

  729. progress.

  730. Christianity

  731. and social issues.

  732. And diversity

  733. and tolerance.

  734. And popularity.

  735. And success.

  736. And power.

  737. And social status.

  738. And tradition.

  739. I mean,

  740. if you're like me,

  741. what I struggle

  742. with are things

  743. like Christianity

  744. and control.

  745. Christianity

  746. and achievements.

  747. Christianity

  748. and my strengths.

  749. Christianity

  750. and my reputation.

  751. Christianity

  752. and my relationships.

  753. Christianity

  754. and my family's

  755. well-being.

  756. My ambitions.

  757. My goals.

  758. My dreams.

  759. My personal

  760. preferences.

  761. My spiritual growth.

  762. I don't know

  763. what you add

  764. in there.

  765. But the Bible

  766. says that we all

  767. do that.

  768. And we call

  769. those things

  770. idols.

  771. and they're

  772. not a bad thing.

  773. Personal ambition

  774. is not a bad thing.

  775. Family is not

  776. a bad thing.

  777. Growth is not

  778. a bad thing.

  779. Change is not

  780. a bad thing.

  781. But when they

  782. become the ultimate

  783. thing,

  784. they become equal

  785. to Christianity.

  786. Then they become

  787. our God.

  788. And Lewis says

  789. to the demon

  790. that if you can

  791. get them to do this,

  792. if you can distract

  793. them,

  794. if you can get

  795. them to hesitate,

  796. if you can get

  797. them to add,

  798. you will keep

  799. them off course.

  800. You will keep

  801. them powerless.

  802. You will keep

  803. them ineffective.

  804. And they will

  805. never ever

  806. come to a place

  807. where they will

  808. believe that

  809. mere Christianity

  810. is enough.

  811. You hear what

  812. the demons said

  813. to each other?

  814. We've got to

  815. get them so busy

  816. in adding things

  817. on that they

  818. will never come

  819. to a place

  820. where they will

  821. believe that

  822. mere Christianity

  823. is enough.

  824. Make them feel

  825. like they add

  826. something onto

  827. the gospel.

  828. And if they add

  829. something onto

  830. the gospel,

  831. then they lose

  832. it.

  833. That's one

  834. of us.

  835. One of us,

  836. when we hear

  837. the gospel,

  838. we're going,

  839. woo!

  840. Amazing!

  841. Incredible!

  842. Grace!

  843. Mercy!

  844. I got that

  845. going for me.

  846. Now I can

  847. leave here,

  848. and I can

  849. just do

  850. whatever I

  851. want.

  852. Because I

  853. have my

  854. heavenly

  855. insurance.

  856. I mean,

  857. we live

  858. our lives

  859. in compartments

  860. and boxes.

  861. And these

  862. boxes have

  863. no integrity.

  864. They're not

  865. built together.

  866. There's no

  867. connection.

  868. There's nowhere

  869. where the

  870. gospel goes

  871. through every

  872. part of our

  873. lives.

  874. We think we

  875. can come to

  876. church,

  877. we can come

  878. to community

  879. group,

  880. we can do

  881. two hours,

  882. and then at

  883. the end of

  884. the rest of

  885. the week,

  886. we just do

  887. whatever we

  888. want.

  889. I mean,

  890. watch out.

  891. I can lie.

  892. I can cheat.

  893. I can defraud

  894. people.

  895. I can treat

  896. people poorly.

  897. I can treat

  898. people poorly

  899. at work,

  900. at my family.

  901. I can treat

  902. my wife like

  903. crap.

  904. I can treat

  905. my friends as

  906. disposable friends.

  907. Hey,

  908. it's okay

  909. because I go to

  910. the gospel,

  911. the sacrifice

  912. of Jesus

  913. Christ.

  914. What he has

  915. done for us

  916. has made no

  917. difference in

  918. our lives.

  919. And so we

  920. walk out of

  921. these doors

  922. with this

  923. false sense

  924. of security

  925. because we

  926. come to

  927. church.

  928. I think

  929. sometimes we

  930. think that we

  931. know Jesus,

  932. but we don't

  933. have this

  934. overwhelming

  935. sense of

  936. God's holiness.

  937. We don't

  938. have the

  939. overwhelming

  940. sense of

  941. how desperate

  942. we are.

  943. We don't

  944. have an

  945. overwhelming

  946. sense of

  947. our brokenness,

  948. of our

  949. lostness.

  950. We don't

  951. understand God's

  952. mercy and

  953. grace and

  954. how God

  955. wants to be

  956. with us

  957. every day

  958. and to

  959. change

  960. everything

  961. and every

  962. moment God

  963. is there to

  964. take you

  965. on the

  966. journey.

  967. And we

  968. lose that

  969. because our

  970. lives are

  971. compartmentalized.

  972. And we

  973. just think this

  974. is what I

  975. do here and

  976. this is what

  977. I do there

  978. and this is

  979. what I do

  980. there,

  981. but none

  982. of these

  983. things ever

  984. come together.

  985. we lose

  986. all of

  987. God's

  988. grace.

  989. Some of

  990. us, we

  991. go tonight

  992. to family

  993. dim sum

  994. compartment,

  995. then we

  996. go to

  997. Sunday night

  998. compartment,

  999. to our

  1000. Monday

  1001. work box,

  1002. to our

  1003. Monday evening

  1004. work box,

  1005. to our

  1006. Friday at

  1007. Leng Kui

  1008. Fung box,

  1009. and in

  1010. none of

  1011. these areas

  1012. does God's

  1013. glory,

  1014. glory,

  1015. in none

  1016. of these

  1017. areas does

  1018. God's

  1019. glory or

  1020. holiness or

  1021. grace or

  1022. the gospel

  1023. change anything.

  1024. Jesus might

  1025. be something

  1026. to us, but

  1027. he's a very

  1028. small something,

  1029. he's not

  1030. everything.

  1031. And if

  1032. you're in one

  1033. of these two

  1034. categories,

  1035. congratulations,

  1036. because we

  1037. all are.

  1038. And what

  1039. is true

  1040. today is

  1041. true for

  1042. us as it

  1043. was for

  1044. Paul when

  1045. he wrote

  1046. the book

  1047. of Galatians.

  1048. And so if

  1049. you turn in

  1050. your bulletin,

  1051. I wrote out

  1052. the first

  1053. eight verses,

  1054. we're just

  1055. going to fly

  1056. through those

  1057. things,

  1058. we're going

  1059. to do this

  1060. for five

  1061. weeks,

  1062. we're going

  1063. to look

  1064. at Galatians

  1065. because I

  1066. think there's

  1067. some things

  1068. in there

  1069. that we

  1070. really have

  1071. to understand,

  1072. we really

  1073. have to get

  1074. our heads

  1075. around.

  1076. First,

  1077. Galatians was

  1078. written by

  1079. Paul,

  1080. his Jewish

  1081. name is

  1082. Saul,

  1083. and he was

  1084. a brilliant

  1085. opponent and

  1086. persecutor of

  1087. the early

  1088. church.

  1089. He had the

  1090. best teacher

  1091. in Torah in

  1092. the world at

  1093. that time.

  1094. He was the

  1095. highest educated

  1096. person.

  1097. He starts to

  1098. attack the

  1099. church and

  1100. in the books

  1101. of Acts,

  1102. we see this

  1103. amazing come

  1104. to Jesus

  1105. experience where

  1106. Jesus actually

  1107. appears to

  1108. Paul and

  1109. blinds him and

  1110. changes his

  1111. life and

  1112. Paul does

  1113. this incredible

  1114. 180.

  1115. He becomes a

  1116. leader in the

  1117. church, he's

  1118. an amazing

  1119. church planner,

  1120. he plants church

  1121. after church

  1122. after church,

  1123. he plants a

  1124. series of

  1125. churches in

  1126. Galatia.

  1127. And then

  1128. after he's

  1129. done playing

  1130. them and

  1131. putting in

  1132. elders, this

  1133. group of

  1134. men called

  1135. Judaizers come

  1136. in.

  1137. Now these

  1138. Judaizers,

  1139. they're Jews,

  1140. and they come

  1141. in to the

  1142. church and

  1143. they try to

  1144. lead the

  1145. people astray.

  1146. They try to

  1147. say, well,

  1148. this is what

  1149. Paul taught,

  1150. and they're not

  1151. going to say

  1152. that's wrong,

  1153. because right

  1154. away people's

  1155. ears will go,

  1156. whoop.

  1157. I mean, if I

  1158. came in here and

  1159. said, you know,

  1160. Jesus didn't really

  1161. die on the cross

  1162. for you,

  1163. you'd go,

  1164. whoa, wow,

  1165. whoa, that's

  1166. totally against

  1167. Christian doctrine

  1168. and everything

  1169. else.

  1170. That's not

  1171. orthodox.

  1172. But if I

  1173. said, Jesus

  1174. died on the

  1175. cross for you

  1176. so that you

  1177. could earn

  1178. your way to

  1179. heaven, he

  1180. opened the

  1181. door so that

  1182. you could work

  1183. hard enough

  1184. now, well,

  1185. maybe some

  1186. people would

  1187. say, I

  1188. don't know.

  1189. Maybe that's

  1190. true.

  1191. I mean, sure,

  1192. nothing's free,

  1193. right?

  1194. So maybe I

  1195. need to do

  1196. something.

  1197. So that was

  1198. what was

  1199. happening in

  1200. Paul's church.

  1201. These guys

  1202. came in and

  1203. they were

  1204. Jewish and

  1205. they said,

  1206. you've got to

  1207. do all the

  1208. rules.

  1209. You've got to

  1210. do all the

  1211. ceremonies.

  1212. You've got to

  1213. go all the

  1214. festivals.

  1215. And so Paul

  1216. hears this and

  1217. he reacts

  1218. incredibly strong.

  1219. I mean, he

  1220. breaks cultural

  1221. norms in writing

  1222. this letter because

  1223. he skips parts

  1224. of it, like

  1225. a greeting,

  1226. a salutation,

  1227. a welcome,

  1228. because he's

  1229. so upset about

  1230. what's happening.

  1231. Because people's

  1232. lives are in

  1233. danger.

  1234. They're in

  1235. danger of

  1236. falling away

  1237. and not

  1238. understanding

  1239. Jesus and

  1240. the gospel and

  1241. grace and

  1242. mercy.

  1243. And so

  1244. around 49

  1245. AD, Paul

  1246. writes this

  1247. letter 15

  1248. years after the

  1249. death and

  1250. resurrection of

  1251. Jesus.

  1252. And he writes

  1253. to these churches

  1254. and he warns

  1255. them and he

  1256. uses very strong

  1257. language and he

  1258. basically says,

  1259. you are in

  1260. danger of

  1261. losing Jesus.

  1262. You're in

  1263. danger of

  1264. being separated

  1265. from the

  1266. thing that

  1267. we've struggled

  1268. so much for.

  1269. And he

  1270. writes this

  1271. letter to

  1272. these men.

  1273. Paul, an

  1274. apostle, big

  1275. A, a

  1276. messenger sent

  1277. out, not

  1278. sent from

  1279. men nor

  1280. through the

  1281. agency of

  1282. men but

  1283. through Jesus

  1284. Christ and

  1285. God the

  1286. Father who

  1287. raised him

  1288. from the

  1289. dead.

  1290. And all

  1291. the brethren

  1292. who are

  1293. with me.

  1294. So Paul

  1295. writes out and

  1296. he says, hey,

  1297. I'm an apostle.

  1298. I'm gathered

  1299. with the

  1300. twelve.

  1301. God has

  1302. given me a

  1303. special message.

  1304. God has

  1305. given me a

  1306. special mission.

  1307. He's given

  1308. me a special

  1309. purpose.

  1310. He's given

  1311. me a special

  1312. power.

  1313. And I'm

  1314. going out to

  1315. preach this

  1316. gospel to

  1317. you.

  1318. grace to

  1319. you.

  1320. That word is

  1321. unmerited

  1322. favor.

  1323. It's the

  1324. gospel.

  1325. It's something

  1326. you don't

  1327. deserve and

  1328. God gives

  1329. to you.

  1330. Grace and

  1331. peace from

  1332. God our

  1333. Father and

  1334. the Lord

  1335. Jesus Christ

  1336. who gave

  1337. himself for

  1338. our sins

  1339. so that he

  1340. might rescue

  1341. us from this

  1342. present evil

  1343. age.

  1344. Are we

  1345. living in a

  1346. present evil

  1347. age?

  1348. He's not

  1349. just talking

  1350. about what's

  1351. going on

  1352. around us

  1353. but he's

  1354. looking forward

  1355. to the

  1356. future.

  1357. He's looking

  1358. forward to

  1359. what's going

  1360. into our

  1361. heart.

  1362. Verse

  1363. four.

  1364. He gave

  1365. himself for

  1366. our sins

  1367. that he

  1368. might rescue

  1369. us from

  1370. this present

  1371. evil age

  1372. according to

  1373. the will

  1374. of our

  1375. God and

  1376. Father.

  1377. To whom

  1378. be the

  1379. glory

  1380. forevermore.

  1381. Amen.

  1382. I am so

  1383. amazed that

  1384. you are so

  1385. quickly deserting

  1386. him who

  1387. called you

  1388. by the grace

  1389. of Christ

  1390. for a

  1391. different

  1392. gospel.

  1393. Paul uses

  1394. incredibly

  1395. strong language

  1396. here.

  1397. And he says

  1398. guys you were

  1399. walking,

  1400. you were

  1401. running,

  1402. you knew

  1403. what it

  1404. meant to

  1405. put your

  1406. faith and

  1407. trust in

  1408. Christ and

  1409. all of a

  1410. sudden these

  1411. men come

  1412. in and

  1413. without blinking

  1414. an eye I'm

  1415. amazed,

  1416. I'm astonished,

  1417. I'm shocked

  1418. that you've

  1419. gone to this

  1420. gospel.

  1421. And the

  1422. gospel isn't

  1423. a different

  1424. gospel,

  1425. it's a

  1426. false gospel.

  1427. I mean these

  1428. guys had

  1429. come in and

  1430. they'd taken

  1431. the Bible

  1432. and they'd

  1433. laid Judaism

  1434. on it.

  1435. And so the

  1436. Bible is good

  1437. but you've

  1438. got to make

  1439. sure that you

  1440. practice all

  1441. the rules

  1442. too.

  1443. You've got to

  1444. make sure you

  1445. do all the

  1446. ceremonies,

  1447. you've got to

  1448. make sure you're

  1449. clean, you've

  1450. got to do all

  1451. these things and

  1452. if you do all

  1453. these things then

  1454. you'll understand

  1455. everything that's

  1456. going on in

  1457. this word.

  1458. And Paul

  1459. says don't

  1460. listen to

  1461. them because

  1462. they're changing

  1463. this.

  1464. And this

  1465. should be the

  1466. thing that goes

  1467. above everything.

  1468. It goes above

  1469. our family, it

  1470. goes above what

  1471. we believe, it

  1472. goes above where

  1473. we work.

  1474. In Paul's day

  1475. it was Judaism,

  1476. maybe today

  1477. people put the

  1478. Book of Mormon.

  1479. Maybe somebody

  1480. you've heard puts

  1481. Scientology tracks

  1482. or Jehovah

  1483. Witnesses watch

  1484. tower up there.

  1485. Maybe some of

  1486. us put Marxist

  1487. doctrine or

  1488. communist belief.

  1489. Maybe some of

  1490. us put our

  1491. own personal

  1492. experience.

  1493. Well I know

  1494. that's what it

  1495. says but you

  1496. know I've never

  1497. really felt that.

  1498. Well I know

  1499. that's what it

  1500. said but that's

  1501. totally unpractical.

  1502. Do I really

  1503. need to do

  1504. that?

  1505. And Paul says

  1506. these men have

  1507. come in and

  1508. they've placed

  1509. stuff above the

  1510. Bible and

  1511. they're reading

  1512. through those

  1513. things to

  1514. interpret the

  1515. scripture and

  1516. he says if you

  1517. do that you're

  1518. going to die.

  1519. Does that sound

  1520. intense?

  1521. I mean when you

  1522. read this you're

  1523. like whoa, these

  1524. are strong words.

  1525. Because he knew

  1526. that what was in

  1527. here was so

  1528. precious that if

  1529. you take it and

  1530. you change it just

  1531. a little bit,

  1532. you lose the

  1533. power of God's

  1534. spirit, you lose

  1535. the power of

  1536. Jesus Christ, you

  1537. lose the reason why

  1538. Christ died on a

  1539. cross for us.

  1540. And so he's

  1541. warning them very

  1542. heavily.

  1543. In verse 7 he

  1544. says it's not just a

  1545. different gospel but

  1546. it's really not

  1547. another.

  1548. Only there are some

  1549. who are disturbing

  1550. you and they want

  1551. to distort and that

  1552. word is pervert to

  1553. change to make

  1554. look unrecognizable

  1555. the gospel of

  1556. Christ.

  1557. Christ, he

  1558. goes on and he

  1559. says these words

  1560. be careful of

  1561. these people.

  1562. Basically what he's

  1563. saying is if you

  1564. change the gospel

  1565. you lose the

  1566. gospel.

  1567. Basically what he's

  1568. saying is every one

1569. of us have a choice

  1570. in here.

  1571. We can place our

  1572. life in our

  1573. future in the

1574. hands of God or we

  1575. can place our

  1576. life and our

  1577. future in our

  1578. hands.

  1579. And Paul says

  1580. there's only two

  1581. choices there.

  1582. You have to choose

  1583. which one are you

  1584. going to do?

  1585. Are you going to

  1586. choose God?

  1587. Are you going to

  1588. choose man?

  1589. And he says be

  1590. careful because when

  1591. these false gospels

  1592. come in what they

1593. tend to do is they

  1594. diminish your

  1595. sinfulness.

  1596. And they look at

  1597. you and say you

  1598. know you're really

  1599. not that bad.

1600. I mean if you just

  1601. went to a couple

  1602. more Bible studies

  1603. you'd be great.

  1604. You know you're

  1605. really not that

  1606. sinful.

  1607. I mean those

  1608. really conservative

  1609. Christians think you

  1610. are but you're

  1611. really not.

1612. I mean you can fix

  1613. yourself.

  1614. You can do it.

  1615. I mean don't worry

  1616. about that.

  1617. And you know God

1618. we used to think he's

  1619. really big but he's

  1620. really kind of like

  1621. that.

1622. In fact God you want

1623. to get God so small

1624. that you can put him

  1625. in your pocket and

  1626. you can carry him

  1627. around.

1628. And so when you need

  1629. him you can bring

1630. him out and you can

1631. rub on him and blow.

  1632. Okay I need this.

  1633. That's moral

  1634. therapeutic deism

  1635. right?

  1636. And Paul says be

  1637. careful how you

  1638. choose your gospels

  1639. because there's not

  1640. two different gospels

  1641. there's not three

  1642. different gospels

  1643. there's one gospel.

  1644. He goes on in

  1645. really strong words

  1646. in verses 8 and 9

  1647. he says but even

  1648. if we Paul

  1649. Tobin the elders

  1650. of Watermark the

  1651. elders and leaders

  1652. of any church you

1653. go to even if we

  1654. are an angel from

  1655. heaven.

  1656. How did Mormonism

  1657. start?

  1658. An angel from

  1659. heaven came

  1660. and they had a

  1661. special book

  1662. and they wanted to

  1663. give the leaders

1664. and they said if you

1665. put this book on top

  1666. of the Bible

  1667. you're going to

  1668. understand everything.

  1669. And Paul says be

  1670. careful of that.

  1671. Even if an angel

  1672. appears before you

  1673. and they say something

  1674. different than what I've

1675. said if they preach a

  1676. gospel contrary to

  1677. what you've preached

1678. he is to be cursed

  1679. and the word is

  1680. damned and it's one

  1681. of the strongest

  1682. words in Greek.

  1683. To be lost.

  1684. So be careful who

  1685. you let in.

  1686. Be careful who

  1687. teaches to you.

  1688. Be careful what you

  1689. listen to.

  1690. Be careful what you

  1691. read besides your

  1692. scripture because those

  1693. things are going to

  1694. filter everything that

  1695. you read.

  1696. And be careful of

  1697. that or you're in

  1698. trouble.

1699. Paul in 9 goes on

  1700. and he says again

  1701. let them be damned.

  1702. Let them be accursed.

  1703. He later on in

  1704. Galatians basically

  1705. says that you're

  1706. teaching death.

  1707. They're teaching

  1708. poison to you.

  1709. You know eight

  1710. years ago I had a

  1711. heart attack and I

  1712. still take heart

  1713. medicine today.

  1714. What do you think

  1715. would happen if all

  1716. of a sudden I

  1717. realized that the

  1718. heart medicine I

  1719. was taking was

  1720. counterfeit?

  1721. You think that

  1722. would be something

  1723. I should be

  1724. concerned about?

  1725. I mean the thing

  1726. that I was hoping

  1727. that was going to

  1728. give me life, the

  1729. thing that I was

  1730. hoping that was

  1731. going to make my

  1732. life better, it was

  1733. going to extend me,

  1734. it was going to

  1735. heal me.

1736. What if I found out

  1737. that the thing, the

  1738. medicine I was taking

  1739. was counterfeit?

  1740. It was actually

  1741. poison.

  1742. Should I react to

  1743. that?

  1744. that's one of the

  1745. first things my wife

  1746. said.

  1747. She goes, now where

  1748. are you buying that

  1749. medicine?

1750. You need to get that

  1751. checked out because I

1752. wanted to make sure that

1753. what I was taking was

  1754. real and true.

1755. And Paul says to the

1756. church and he says to

1757. us, in the same way,

1758. you guys need to make

  1759. sure that what you're

  1760. taking, what you're

  1761. believing is real and

  1762. true because you might

  1763. be taking something that

1764. you think is life and it's

  1765. going to kill you.

1766. It's going to work you

  1767. to death.

1768. It's going to make you

1769. feel like you got to do

  1770. all these things.

1771. It's going to make you

1772. feel like you can do

  1773. whatever you want because

  1774. you're going to heaven

  1775. because Jesus loves you.

  1776. He's my dude.

  1777. Paul says be careful.

  1778. Examine your life.

  1779. Examine your actions.

  1780. Examine your heart.

  1781. What do you really

1782. believe and how are you

  1783. really living that out?

  1784. Does grace in the

  1785. gospel message change

  1786. anything?

1787. that you think or do.

1788. And Paul says if it

  1789. doesn't, then you're

  1790. probably taking poison.

  1791. And ultimately it's

  1792. going to kill you.

1793. And the hard thing about

1794. this type of poison is

  1795. it's spiritual death.

1796. And it can be passed on

  1797. to those around you.

1798. So Paul says be careful.

  1799. Make sure you're taking

  1800. the genuine gospel.

  1801. Make sure you understand

  1802. what it is.

1803. And the true gospel I think

1804. is found in verse 3 through 5

1805. and we're going to end here.

1806. Because if you just take

1807. verse 4, that is the whole

  1808. message of this passage.

  1809. That's the whole message

1810. of the book of Galatians.

1811. The true gospel is this.

1812. Verse 4, it tells us what.

  1813. What did Jesus do?

  1814. Jesus came.

1815. Read that again with me.

1816. Jesus came to give himself

1817. for our sins so that he

  1818. might rescue us.

1819. What did he come to do?

1820. He came to rescue us.

  1821. I mean, Christianity is

1822. the only religion in the

  1823. world where the leader

  1824. sacrifices himself.

1825. He jumps in the water

  1826. to rescue the people.

  1827. Every other religion says,

  1828. hey, you're drowning?

1829. Here, let me give you this

  1830. book.

1831. I'll teach you how to swim.

  1832. Turn to page 48.

  1833. Really quickly.

  1834. Okay.

1835. If you do that, you're saved.

  1836. Every other religion says,

  1837. do that.

1838. Let me give you something

1839. and you're going to learn

1840. how to be good yourself.

  1841. But Christianity, the gospel

1842. message is that Jesus Christ

1843. came and he rescued you.

1844. He jumped in the water.

1845. And not only did he jump

1846. in the water, he pushed you

1847. out of the water into a

  1848. lifeboat.

1849. And not only did he push you

1850. out of the water into the

1851. lifeboat, as he did that,

  1852. he died.

  1853. He died.

  1854. He died.

1855. When we were praying about

  1856. starting Watermark, I met

1857. with two professors at the

  1858. University of Hong Kong.

1859. We prayed and we dreamed

1860. about what it would look

1861. like to have a college

  1862. ministry there.

  1863. We had no leaders.

  1864. We had no idea.

1865. We knew what was going on.

1866. One of those guys was Chris

  1867. Beeling.

1868. And as we sat in TGI Fridays

1869. and we talked about it and

1870. we dreamed about it and we

1871. wrote down on that, little

1872. did I know that that summer,

1873. he would no longer be here.

1874. Because as he went swimming

  1875. with his friends, his

1876. relatives, and one of the

1877. nieces got caught in his

1878. undertow and was going to

1879. drown and he ran out and he

1880. swam out and he saved his

1881. niece and he brought her out

1882. of the water and in doing

1883. that he had a heart attack

  1884. and he died.

1885. So he's not with us anymore.

1886. And in the same way, Paul says

1887. to the church of Galatians,

1888. this is what Jesus does.

1889. He jumps into the water.

  1890. He rescues us.

1891. He doesn't teach us how to be

  1892. rescued.

1893. He rescues us and he shows us

1894. that we need him and we only

1895. can make it with him.

1896. Jesus jumps in and he throws

  1897. himself into the water.

1898. How does he do that or what

1899. does he do to save us?

1900. He says, it says in verse 4,

1901. he gave himself for our sins.

1902. So he gives himself for our

  1903. sins.

1904. In Greek it says he gives

1905. himself on behalf of our sins.

1906. Jesus dies in our place.

1907. He doesn't die in our place to

1908. give us a second chance.

1909. He dies in our place to give us

  1910. life.

1911. Because if he had a second chance

  1912. you would ruin it.

1913. And what the gospel says is he

1914. jumps in the water and he saves

  1915. us.

1916. He saves us by dying for our

1917. sins to give us a second chance.

1918. And in verse 5 he says, why does

  1919. he save us?

1920. According to the will of God our

  1921. father.

1922. To whom be the glory forever and

  1923. ever.

  1924. Amen.

  1925. It's grace.

1926. You and I are here right now not

1927. because we're cool and not because

1928. God thought he really needed to

1929. save us because he needed an

  1930. accountant as a Christian.

1931. He just came in and he saved us.

1932. His grace poured out upon us on

1933. the cross and the reason that we're

1934. here is because of God's glory.

  1935. In God's goodness.

  1936. In God's mercy.

  1937. In God's grace.

1938. And Paul wants us to remember

  1939. that.

1940. He wants to challenge us to say

  1941. don't forget the gospel.

1942. Don't forget the messages that

  1943. Jesus rescues.

1944. Don't forget the messages that

  1945. Jesus sacrifices.

1946. Don't forget the messages that

  1947. Jesus did it.

1948. Because he just did it.

1949. And the reason you and I are

1950. sitting here is not because we

1951. have our acts together because I

1952. know you and you know me and we

1953. don't have our acts together.

1954. The reason we sit here is because

1955. God poured out his mercy and his

  1956. grace on us.

1957. And that's the message that Paul

1958. wants the church to take away.

1959. That's the message that he wants

  1960. us to remember.

1961. That's the message that we walk

1962. through our daily lives and we

1963. don't just enter into Christian

1964. family and life through God's

1965. blood but we walk every day

  1966. through his blood.

1967. When we feel that emptiness in

1968. our life we have to realize that

1969. that emptiness is there because

1970. there's a void and that void can

1971. only be filled by Christ in the

  1972. gospel.

1973. Some of us are going to feel that

1974. emptiness and we're going to

1975. think well I can fill it with a

1976. watch or I can fill it with going

  1977. to another Bible study.

1978. I need to go to another church

1979. today and really get that

  1980. emptiness filled up.

1981. But the message that Paul is

1982. trying to share to the church is

1983. if you do that you're living a

  1984. false gospel.

1985. And it will eventually kill you.

1986. But the message is that as you

1987. walk with him moment by moment

1988. every day that his mercy, his

1989. grace is poured out upon you.

1990. He dances, he loves, he hugs.

1991. The only time in heaven when

1992. people stand, when Jesus stands,

1993. is when people come to faith.

1994. And Paul wants the church, he

1995. wants us to understand that.

1996. Because the minute we forget that,

1997. the minute we just kind of go,

  1998. yeah, I'm saved.

  1999. What's for lunch?

2000. Well, I'm saved and, you know,

2001. I don't know if this is going to

  2002. affect my business transaction

  2003. today.

2004. Maybe I can just put that in this

  2005. other compartment.

2006. Well, I'm saved but I need to do

2007. some more things just to make

2008. sure that I'm really saved.

2009. The minute we forget that,

2010. Paul says we take poison instead

  2011. of life.

2012. And I think we all struggle with

  2013. this.

2014. I struggle with this every

  2015. moment of my day.

2016. I have to ask myself, why is that

2017. emptiness there and why am I not

2018. allowing God to fill that up with

  2019. his son?

2020. Do I really believe getting another

2021. title or degree will fill that

  2022. emptiness?

2023. Do I really believe getting more

2024. money is going to fill that

  2025. emptiness?

2026. And Paul is yelling and he's

2027. shouting out and he's saying,

  2028. guys, be careful.

2029. Paul, verse three, he says,

2030. grace and peace from God, our

2031. father and our Lord, Jesus

  2032. Christ.

2033. And that's how the book of

  2034. Galatians is encapsulated.

2035. It starts off with grace and

2036. peace and it ends with grace and

  2037. peace.

2038. And in the middle is gospel,

  2039. God's love, his sacrifice,

2040. how much he's crazy about you,

2041. how much he wants to go on a

2042. journey with you, how much he

2043. wants to write into your story,

2044. how much he wants you to trust

  2045. him.

2046. And the question is, will we do

  2047. that?

2048. Will we surrender to him and allow

  2049. him to do that?

2050. Or will we live a different

  2051. gospel?

2052. The gospel of my invention.

2053. You guys, you're going to be in

2054. for an amazing ride these next five

2055. weeks as we go through Galatians.

2056. I want to encourage you to stick

2057. with it, think about it, deal with

  2058. it, ask questions.

2059. If I said something that makes

2060. you angry, come up here and

  2061. punch me.

2062. Not in the face, but in the arm,

2063. okay, or something like that.

  2064. Let's talk about it.

2065. Because you should be angry.

2066. It should freak you out.

2067. That's why Paul had to speak so

  2068. strongly.

2069. Don't just walk away and go,

2070. that was really cool, that was

2071. just another sermon and I'll go

2072. live my life the way I want to.

2073. Paul says if you do that, you

  2074. take death.

2075. And we don't want you to take

  2076. death.

2077. We want you to take life.

2078. Father, I just thank you for this

  2079. day.

2080. I thank you for your word that is

  2081. incredibly powerful and

  2082. challenging.

2083. I thank you how your spirit goes

2084. out through your word and changes

2085. people's lives and impacts them in

2086. ways that we will never know until

  2087. we get to heaven.

2088. Father, I pray for those of us in

2089. here who are struggling with

2090. performance and doing and feeling

2091. like we just haven't done enough

2092. and does God really accept me and

2093. now my life is still crap and how's

2094. that going to get fixed out and

2095. surely God doesn't want to deal

  2096. with that.

2097. He wants me to deal with it.

2098. That's why I have all these books

2099. to read and all these other

2100. things and Father, I just pray for

2101. those because we're all at places

2102. like that sometime in our life.

2103. And I pray that your spirit would

2104. just enter into their life and they

2105. would feel your gospel and your

2106. presence and your love and your

2107. gentleness and your compassion and

2108. they would just be overwhelmed by

  2109. your goodness.

2110. How much you desire to be with

  2111. them.

2112. Father, I pray for those of us who

2113. live here and we just do our two

2114. hours and we walk out and our lives

  2115. are no different.

2116. Father, I pray this week that our

  2117. lives would be different.

2118. I pray that you would just smack us

2119. right in the head with a two by four.

2120. Help us to realize that we're

2121. treating our family in ways we

  2122. shouldn't.

2123. Help us to realize we're treating

2124. our spouses in ways that we

  2125. shouldn't, that we're treating

2126. our workers and our coworkers and

2127. everything in ways that would be

2128. totally dishonoring to you and

  2129. displeasing to you.

2130. Help us to integrate our lives with

2131. your son in the gospel and realize

2132. that it's not just one little

  2133. section but it's everything.

  2134. That you're everything.

2135. Father, help us to have a God who's

2136. not so small that we can control

2137. him but help us to realize that you

2138. are God who's the creator of all

2139. things and yet you came to earth and

2140. put on an earth suit and lived and

2141. died and jumped in the water to save

2142. us because we were drowning and you

2143. pushed us into the boat and you

2144. sacrificed yourself purely because you

2145. love us and you wanted to glorify your

  2146. father.

2147. Lord, we come to you and just are

2148. humble and we open our hearts.

  2149. Heal us.

  2150. Change us.

  2151. Bring us to you.

  2152. We love you.

2153. And we need you desperately.

2154. We pray these things in your son Jesus'

  2155. name.

  2156. Amen.

  2157. Amen.
