  1. Today's scripture's passages are found in the book of Galatians.

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles

  4. know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,

  5. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  6. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus,

  7. that we may be justified by faith in Christ,

  8. and not by the works of the law,

  9. because by the works of the law no one will be justified.

  10. Galatians 2, 15-16

  11. In Galatians 3, 1-14, it says,

  12. You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you?

  13. Before your very eyes, Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified.

  14. I would like to learn just one thing from you.

  15. Did you receive the Spirit by the works of the law,

  16. or by believing what you heard?

  17. Are you so foolish?

  18. After beginning by means of the Spirit,

  19. are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh?

  20. Have you experienced so much in vain?

  21. If it really was in vain?

  22. So again I ask,

  23. Does God give you His Spirit and work miracles among you

  24. by the works of the law,

  25. or by believing what you heard?

  26. So also Abraham believed God,

  27. and it was credited to him as righteousness.

  28. Understand then that those who have faith are children of Abraham.

  29. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the gentles by faith,

  30. and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham.

  31. All nations will be blessed through you.

  32. So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham,

  33. the man of faith.

  34. For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse.

  35. As it is written,

  36. Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the book of the law.

  37. Clearly, no one who relies on the law is justified before God,

  38. because the righteous will live by faith.

  39. The law is not based on faith.

  40. On the contrary, it says,

  41. The person who does these things will live by them.

  42. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us.

  43. For it is written,

  44. Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.

  45. He redeemed us,

  46. and ordered that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,

  47. so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

  48. And in Galatians 3, 26-29,

  49. So, in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith.

  50. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourself with Christ.

  51. There is neither Jew nor Gentile,

  52. neither slave nor free,

  53. nor is there male or female.

  54. For you are all one in Christ Jesus.

  55. If you belong to Christ,

  56. then you are Abraham's seed,

  57. and heirs according to the promise.

  58. This is today's reading from God's Word.

  59. Some years ago,

  60. a very famous preacher was invited by a large church

  61. to hold three nights of meeting on a weekend.

  62. So the first night, this preacher asked the question,

  63. What is the Gospel?

  64. I'd like to see how many of you know what the Gospel is all about.

  65. Raise your hands if you know what the Gospel is.

  66. And no hand went up.

  67. And then he said,

  68. Since I'm here in this big church,

  69. you don't know what the Gospel is,

  70. I'm going to go home.

  71. Good night.

  72. And he left.

  73. Next night,

  74. and before that,

  75. the church was very concerned.

  76. They spent lots of money to get him there.

  77. So next night they said,

  78. Look, if you ask that same question again,

  79. everyone must put up his hand or her hand.

  80. So next night,

  81. true to form,

  82. he asked,

  83. How many of you know what the Gospel is all about?

  84. If you do,

  85. raise your hand.

  86. And every hand went up.

  87. And he said,

  88. Since you all know about the Gospel,

  89. what it is,

  90. there's no need for me to preach,

  91. so good night,

  92. goodbye.

  93. And he left.

  94. So there was much concern,

  95. consternation in that congregation.

  96. And they said,

  97. Look,

  98. the third time,

  99. if you ask,

  100. how many of you know what the Gospel is,

  101. half of us,

  102. one side would just put their hands up,

  103. and the other side would keep their hands down.

  104. Alright?

  105. So they had this conspiracy.

  106. So this man again asked the question,

  107. Do you know what the Gospel is?

  108. How many of you know what the Gospel is?

  109. And half the congregation raised their hands,

  110. the other half didn't.

  111. He said,

  112. That's wonderful.

  113. Those of you who know,

  114. tell those who don't.

  115. Now I'm tempted to repeat that exercise,

  116. because our theme for this morning

  117. is the basis and the blessings of the Gospel.

  118. What is the Gospel?

  119. Euangelion,

  120. the Greek word,

  121. means good news.

  122. And this word was usually used for announcing a victory

  123. over an enemy,

  124. over a hostile force,

  125. or it's used when the king ascends a throne,

  126. the coronation.

  127. It's good news.

  128. And the Christian good news is that God,

  129. in Christ,

  130. has rescued us.

  131. He came down to reach us,

  132. to pluck us out from the sins of hell and death,

  133. and brought us into his family.

  134. This is the good news that the early church,

  135. and we today,

  136. want to announce to the whole world.

  137. And the word used by the Apostle Paul,

  138. and we are looking at his teaching in Galatians,

  139. is found in verse 16 of Galatians 2.

  140. So follow with me in the sheet that you were given.

  141. Know,

  142. know that a man is not justified

  143. by observing the law,

  144. but by faith in Jesus Christ.

  145. So we too have put our faith in Christ Jesus,

  146. that we may be justified by faith in Christ.

  147. So we have this word,

  148. justification.

  149. It's a big word.

  150. It's a theological word.

  151. But let me unpack for you,

  152. because this is a tremendous word.

  153. This is,

  154. if you like,

  155. the very basis,

  156. the heart of the gospel.

  157. We,

  158. says Paul,

  159. are justified by faith in Christ.

  160. justification is a legal term.

  161. It's used in the courtroom.

  162. It's when a guilty offender,

  163. who should be punished for his misdeeds,

  164. is declared not guilty by the judge,

  165. and then acquitted.

  166. So Paul was telling us,

  167. God did something like that,

  168. when we trusted in Jesus Christ.

  169. But you and I can only appreciate good news,

  170. when we look at the bad news.

  171. You and I can only appreciate brightness,

  172. when there are hues of darkness.

  173. In Romans 1,

    Romans 1:18

  174. verse 18,

  175. we have one of the most frightening verses,

  176. that the world can ever read.

  177. In Romans 1,

    Romans 1:18

  178. verse 18,

  179. the apostle Paul,

  180. declares,

  181. for the wrath of God,

  182. since most of you are trained in North America,

  183. the wrath of God,

  184. first time ever,

  185. pronounce it that way.

  186. For the wrath of God,

  187. is being revealed from heaven,

  188. against all godliness,

  189. and wickedness of men,

  190. who suppress the truth,

  191. by their wickedness.

  192. Here we have,

  193. the stark,

  194. and awesome,

  195. bad news.

  196. There is something called,

  197. the wrath of God.

  198. It's not that God loses his temper,

  199. like you and I do.

  200. The wrath of God,

  201. is his holiness,

  202. his justice,

  203. in coalition,

  204. against sin.

  205. And that means judgment.

  206. And every one of us,

  207. stands under God's judgment,

  208. because we rebel against him,

  209. we've gone our own ways,

  210. we've disregarded him,

  211. and his wrath rests on us.

  212. The biggest problem of humankind,

  213. is not about global warming,

  214. or even infighting,

  215. in business,

  216. the home,

  217. or personal relationships.

  218. The greatest problem is,

  219. how can the wrath of God,

  220. be averted?

  221. How can we have peace with God?

  222. How can we reconcile to God?

  223. And here,

  224. it's a stark contrast,

  225. between the good news,

  226. the gospel,

  227. and also the bad news,

  228. that God's judgment,

  229. is on every single,

  230. human being.

  231. Now of course,

  232. the world says,

  233. there's a way to get out of it,

  234. and to begin to postulate,

  235. to imagine that God is like,

  236. a cosmic Santa Claus.

  237. He's a nice guy really,

  238. and if you've done something wrong,

  239. if you have committed,

  240. some little sin,

  241. it's okay.

  242. Say you are sorry,

  243. and God will accept you,

  244. then we begin to make God,

  245. in our own image.

  246. Think of Him,

  247. almost like a cosmic Santa Claus.

  248. It's just a small piccadillo,

  249. a small sin,

  250. everybody sins anyway,

  251. and God can forgive.

  252. It's His duty,

  253. His right to forgive,

  254. as some philosophers,

  255. even declare.

  256. But we are told,

  257. that our God is a holy God.

  258. Our God is a just God,

  259. and sin has to be punished.

  260. The wages,

  261. the result of sin,

  262. is death,

  263. eternal separation from Him.

  264. But man,

  265. has all kinds of devious ways,

  266. to get out of this predicament.

  267. So human beings would say,

  268. look,

  269. if we appease God,

  270. and make Him want to accept us,

  271. we can go to the church,

  272. or temple,

  273. more often.

  274. We can do good deeds,

  275. we can be involved,

  276. in charitable acts,

  277. and kindness,

  278. and we can do this,

  279. do that.

  280. And so the human religion,

  281. is trying to appease God,

  282. by doing this,

  283. doing that,

  284. do,

  285. do,

  286. do.

  287. But then when we come,

  288. to the Christian faith,

  289. we have the fantastic news,

  290. it's done.

  291. It's not our doing,

  292. that God will accept us.

  293. It's not human achievement,

  294. but resting in what God has done for us,

  295. in Jesus Christ.

  296. And so,

  297. we are introduced,

  298. and this is the good news,

  299. the gospel,

  300. to the cross,

  301. to Jesus crucified,

  302. on that wicked Roman cross.

  303. This is the heart,

  304. of the Christian faith,

  305. the center,

  306. of the gospel.

  307. And in Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3:1

  308. verse 1,

  309. Paul says,

  310. you know,

  311. when we preach to you,

  312. what happened?

  313. Before your very eyes,

  314. Jesus Christ,

  315. was clearly portrayed,

  316. as crucified.

  317. So Paul reminded,

  318. the readers,

  319. of Jesus,

  320. Jesus,

  321. on the cross.

  322. There,

  323. on the cross,

  324. Jesus was,

  325. as it were,

  326. placarded,

  327. was openly displayed,

  328. for all to see.

  329. And,

  330. Paul then reminds us,

  331. look,

  332. it is Jesus Christ,

  333. and Him crucified,

  334. that really matters.

  335. Now,

  336. the Galatian people,

  337. were having a struggle.

  338. They thought,

  339. by doing good works,

  340. by observing the law,

  341. God will accept them,

  342. love them,

  343. draw them back to Himself.

  344. But Paul says,

  345. no,

  346. no,

  347. no.

  348. Because,

  349. people,

  350. have always thought,

  351. that the way to come to God,

  352. is to do good works,

  353. to go to church,

  354. to be religious,

  355. and so on.

  356. But here,

  357. the Apostle Paul tells us,

  358. that is not the way.

  359. And so,

  360. here we have this picture.

  361. If you look at the text,

  362. in verse 10,

  363. it says,

  364. all who rely on observing the law,

  365. are under a curse,

  366. for it is written,

  367. curse is everyone,

  368. who does not do everything,

  369. written in the book of the law.

  370. Clearly,

  371. no one is justified,

  372. before God,

  373. by the law.

  374. And then in verse 13,

  375. Christ redeemed us,

  376. from the curse of the law,

  377. by becoming a curse for us.

  378. For it is written,

  379. curse is everyone,

  380. who is hung on a tree.

  381. And Paul goes on to say,

  382. he redeemed us,

  383. in order,

  384. the blessing given to Abraham,

  385. might come to the Gentiles,

  386. through Jesus Christ.

  387. So that by faith,

  388. we might receive,

  389. the promise,

  390. of the Holy Spirit.

  391. So here we are told,

  392. Jesus died on a cruel,

  393. Roman cross.

  394. It was the basis,

  395. the most horrible form,

  396. of torture.

  397. But on that cross,

  398. something wonderful happened.

  399. On that cross,

  400. Jesus became a curse,

  401. because the Bible tells us,

  402. curse is everyone,

  403. who hangs on a tree.

  404. That's a judgment,

  405. the punishment,

  406. reserved for criminals.

  407. And there Jesus hung,

  408. on that cruel,

  409. Roman cross.

  410. And then Paul tells us,

  411. something else happened.

  412. When he died there,

  413. he absorbed,

  414. as it were,

  415. the curses of humankind.

  416. He bore all our sin.

  417. And Paul tells us,

  418. he who knew no sin,

  419. became sin,

  420. that we might become,

  421. the righteousness of God.

  422. Christ died for sins,

  423. once for all,

  424. the just for the unjust,

  425. that he might bring us,

  426. to God.

  427. So here,

  428. we see that on the cross,

  429. God's righteousness,

  430. and love,

  431. is displayed.

  432. God wants to remove,

  433. the curses of sin,

  434. the terrible work,

  435. that sin does,

  436. to human beings.

  437. So,

  438. the good news is that,

  439. on the cross,

  440. Jesus died for us,

  441. he took our place,

  442. and when we trust him,

  443. we,

  444. can become,

  445. his children,

  446. and his beloved followers.

  447. So,

  448. Paul goes on to say,

  449. look,

  450. this also happened,

  451. to one of,

  452. the very famous,

  453. patriarchs,

  454. forefathers of the faith,

  455. Abraham,

  456. himself.

  457. So,

  458. if you look at,

  459. Galatians chapter 3,

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  460. in verse,

  461. 6,

  462. it says,

  463. Abraham,

  464. he believed God,

  465. and it was credited to him,

  466. as righteousness.

  467. So,

  468. here,

  469. Paul is saying,

  470. look at the example,

  471. of our Jewish ancestor,

  472. forefather,

  473. Abraham.

  474. How,

  475. did he get right with God?

  476. How did he,

  477. enjoyed,

  478. and received,

  479. the blessing,

  480. of God?

  481. And the answer was,

  482. because,

  483. he trusted in the Lord Jesus,

  484. in God himself,

  485. he was justified,

  486. and in,

  487. verse,

  488. 6,

  489. it tells us,

  490. very clearly,

  491. that,

  492. he believed God,

  493. and,

  494. it was,

  495. credited to him,

  496. as righteousness.

  497. So,

  498. Paul is saying,

  499. look at,

  500. this famous,

  501. ancestor,

  502. forefather,

  503. of the Jews,

  504. and of believers,

  505. Abraham himself.

  506. How did he get right with God?

  507. He,

  508. he believed God.

  509. Now,

  510. we know the story,

  511. of Abraham.

  512. He had,

  513. no,

  514. son,

  515. from his wife,

  516. Sarah,

  517. and he thought,

  518. someone else,

  519. would inherit,

  520. all his blessings.

  521. And God said,

  522. no,

  523. one day,

  524. you,

  525. will have a child.

  526. You,

  527. will have a son.

  528. And so,

  529. one day,

  530. God said to him,

  531. go out,

  532. look at the stars.

  533. Count them,

  534. if you can.

  535. One day,

  536. your descendants,

  537. will be like the stars,

  538. in the heaven.

  539. And I'm going to give you,

  540. a son,

  541. a child.

  542. At that time,

  543. Abraham was way,

  544. in his 90s,

  545. and Sarah,

  546. was very,

  547. very old.

  548. How could that happen?

  549. Then,

  550. by a miracle,

  551. something happened.

  552. Sarah,

  553. had a child,

  554. called Isaac.

  555. And this was what,

  556. God was doing.

  557. He was going to bring blessing,

  558. to this child,

  559. of his.

  560. He says,

  561. count the stars.

  562. If you can count them,

  563. your blessings,

  564. will be like that.

  565. Your descendants,

  566. will be like the numerous,

  567. stars,

  568. of the heavens,

  569. populating the earth,

  570. bringing blessing,

  571. to people.

  572. So here,

  573. we have,

  574. if you like,

  575. the very basic,

  576. of the gospel.

  577. Here,

  578. we're introduced,

  579. to Abraham,

  580. who believed God,

  581. it was reckoned to him,

  582. for righteousness,

  583. and God,

  584. was going to do something,

  585. for him.

  586. And this is known,

  587. as the gospel,

  588. the good news.

  589. But then,

  590. there was a problem.

  591. These Galatian Christians,

  592. were hoodwinked,

  593. by the Judaizers.

  594. People who said,

  595. okay,

  596. it's wonderful,

  597. to be Christians,

  598. but,

  599. you must observe,

  600. the law of Moses.

  601. God gave,

  602. the law to Moses,

  603. on Mount Sinai.

  604. That has to be obeyed.

  605. So you must have,

  606. trust,

  607. faith in Jesus,

  608. plus,

  609. in other words,

  610. Jesus plus,

  611. the cross plus.

  612. And this was,

  613. an abomination,

  614. to the apostle Paul.

  615. So he cries out,

  616. in the first verse,

  617. you foolish Galatians,

  618. who has bewitched you,

  619. who cast his spell,

  620. over you,

  621. before your very eyes,

  622. Jesus Christ,

  623. was portrayed,

  624. as crucified.

  625. How come,

  626. you are leaving,

  627. God's way of salvation,

  628. and reverting back,

  629. to good works,

  630. the Jewish way,

  631. the law,

  632. trying to,

  633. get right with God,

  634. by that way.

  635. You are hoodwinked,

  636. you are deceived,

  637. and who has done that to you?

  638. Oh you fools,

  639. you stupid people.

  640. Why,

  641. do you ignore,

  642. ignore,

  643. God's way,

  644. of salvation.

  645. And here,

  646. we are introduced again,

  647. to the very heart,

  648. of the Christian message.

  649. How,

  650. are we justified?

  651. How,

  652. do we get right,

  653. with God?

  654. Is it,

  655. by something we do,

  656. by our good works?

  657. And,

  658. John Calvin,

  659. the reformer said,

  660. the only contribution,

  661. that you,

  662. and I make,

  663. to him,

  664. is our sin.

  665. We can't contribute,

  666. to our salvation,

  667. by any good works,

  668. will never,

  669. be accepted.

  670. Or,

  671. as Martin Luther,

  672. puts it,

  673. to reestablish,

  674. the law,

  675. in other words,

  676. to practice,

  677. all the works,

  678. of the law,

  679. asking God,

  680. to accept us,

  681. because of our good works,

  682. is to,

  683. abolish,

  684. the gospel.

  685. That's why,

  686. Paul was so strong.

  687. You foolish Galatians,

  688. you dum-dums,

  689. you idiots,

  690. think of all the worst descriptions,

  691. that you can call somebody.

  692. You are so stupid,

  693. you are so dumb.

  694. How,

  695. can you go back,

  696. on the very basis,

  697. of your salvation?

  698. How,

  699. can you make the law,

  700. equal,

  701. with the gospel?

  702. That is,

  703. absolute folly.

  704. You will miss out,

  705. on your blessings.

  706. So,

  707. he says,

  708. look,

  709. think about,

  710. your life,

  711. the life in the spirit.

  712. Was that by works?

  713. Was that by the law?

  714. You have the Holy Spirit,

  715. he's directing you,

  716. he's dwelling in you.

  717. How did that come?

  718. And the answer is,

  719. through faith,

  720. in Jesus Christ.

  721. And,

  722. how is your Christian life,

  723. lived out?

  724. Is it by,

  725. obeying,

  726. all the legal,

  727. precepts,

  728. of the Old Testament law?

  729. Trying to get justified,

  730. by the good acts we do?

  731. And Paul's answer was,

  732. no,

  733. you received the Holy Spirit.

  734. The Holy Spirit,

  735. was freely,

  736. given to you.

  737. Your life,

  738. is now,

  739. life in the spirit.

  740. It is a gift from God.

  741. You can't earn it.

  742. And,

  743. you have to accept simply,

  744. what God has done for you.

  745. Or,

  746. as a very famous theologian,

  747. called Paul Tillich,

  748. and most evangelicals,

  749. we're afraid of that name.

  750. He says,

  751. and I like this quote,

  752. he says,

  753. what we have to do,

  754. is to accept,

  755. the acceptance.

  756. When we accept,

  757. what Jesus Christ,

  758. has done for us,

  759. God accepts us.

  760. Accept the acceptance,

  761. and then,

  762. we would have,

  763. true faith in Christ.

  764. But these Galatians,

  765. were saying,

  766. no,

  767. we want to go our own way,

  768. we need Jesus,

  769. the gospel,

  770. plus,

  771. this is the very dangerous thing,

  772. Jesus,

  773. the gospel,

  774. and,

  775. something else.

  776. And for the Galatian Christians,

  777. because they were,

  778. influenced by the Jewish teachers,

  779. it was,

  780. Jesus,

  781. plus,

  782. good works,

  783. and then,

  784. we're accepted by God.

  785. Of course,

  786. we believe in Jesus,

  787. and then,

  788. we will do good works,

  789. but,

  790. the Judaizers,

  791. were putting,

  792. both together,

  793. in order,

  794. that we can be received,

  795. and justified by God.

  796. And Paul says,

  797. no,

  798. just think,

  799. of the Holy Spirit.

  800. How did you receive,

  801. the Holy Spirit?

  802. Did you psych yourself up?

  803. Did you do,

  804. all kinds of good works?

  805. Refuse that,

  806. reject that,

  807. so that the Holy Spirit,

  808. can fill you,

  809. empower you,

  810. and you see miracles,

  811. happening in your church?

  812. And Paul's answer was,

  813. no,

  814. that was not the case.

  815. It's like this,

  816. that many years ago,

  817. a good friend of ours,

  818. loaned us her,

  819. holiday bungalow,

  820. in the fields,

  821. on an island,

  822. in the fjord,

  823. of Norway.

  824. And,

  825. we were there,

  826. the five of us,

  827. in our family,

  828. and we were given a boat,

  829. a rowing boat.

  830. We tried,

  831. to row.

  832. We didn't realize,

  833. that the current,

  834. underneath the fjord,

  835. was very,

  836. very strong.

  837. So no matter,

  838. how we rowed,

  839. myself,

  840. and three of my sons,

  841. who were teenagers then,

  842. we tried to row,

  843. we couldn't go,

  844. very,

  845. very far.

  846. And we were,

  847. just,

  848. rowing like,

  849. mad.

  850. But,

  851. we had to come back,

  852. very disappointed.

  853. And then,

  854. our host came in,

  855. in the middle of our holidays,

  856. and he introduced us,

  857. to,

  858. an outboat motor.

  859. He said,

  860. put this on the boat,

  861. I'll show you how to use it.

  862. And then,

  863. you will have,

  864. a new experience,

  865. all together.

  866. And we did that.

  867. So with that,

  868. motor,

  869. the engine,

  870. we were able to,

  871. sail around the fjord,

  872. and really enjoyed ourselves.

  873. And all we need to do,

  874. was to make sure,

  875. we don't hit,

  876. any shows of rocks,

  877. or the land.

  878. Then we would,

  879. proceed,

  880. and enjoy,

  881. our stay,

  882. and our cruise,

  883. our boat ride.

  884. And that's what,

  885. the Holy Spirit does.

  886. That when we,

  887. depend on him,

  888. he's going to give us,

  889. power,

  890. to live a life,

  891. that is pleasing,

  892. to God.

  893. And Paul is saying,

  894. look,

  895. you know,

  896. you are living,

  897. or your life should be,

  898. live,

  899. in the Holy Spirit.

  900. That is a blessing.

  901. That is a blessing,

  902. the blessing,

  903. of justification.

  904. You're put into,

  905. a right relationship,

  906. with God.

  907. The blessing,

  908. the gift of the Holy Spirit,

  909. you have him.

  910. And besides,

  911. you have many,

  912. many other blessings,

  913. as well.

  914. The basis,

  915. of the gospel,

  916. the good news,

  917. is that God,

  918. has accepted you,

  919. in Jesus Christ.

  920. Good works,

  921. cannot contribute,

  922. towards your salvation.

  923. In fact,

  924. John Calvin,

  925. used to say,

  926. the only contribution,

  927. that we bring to Jesus,

  928. is our sin.

  929. You think about it,

  930. that's all,

  931. that we do.

  932. We say,

  933. Lord,

  934. I'm a sinner.

  935. Have mercy.

  936. Lord,

  937. save me.

  938. So,

  939. we have the blessing,

  940. of justification.

  941. God says,

  942. because you believe,

  943. in Jesus,

  944. he died for your sins,

  945. and before me,

  946. although you are as guilty,

  947. as can be,

  948. I forgive you,

  949. you are pardoned,

  950. you become,

  951. no longer my enemy,

  952. you become my child.

  953. And then the other blessing,

  954. is the blessing,

  955. of the Holy Spirit.

  956. When we become Christians,

  957. the Holy Spirit,

  958. indwells in us,

  959. and he gives us power,

  960. to live a life,

  961. that's pleasing,

  962. to God.

  963. And then if you,

  964. glance at your text,

  965. to verse 26,

  966. he says,

  967. look,

  968. there are further blessings.

  969. You are all,

  970. children of God,

  971. through faith,

  972. in Christ Jesus.

  973. Now,

  974. many philosophers,

  975. in the last century,

  976. and currently,

  977. talk about,

  978. human beings,

  979. as orphans.

  980. We live in the,

  981. vast universe,

  982. but we have no,

  983. relationship,

  984. to a father.

  985. We are lost.

  986. We are like orphans,

  987. wandering around.

  988. We are waves,

  989. and strays,

  990. not being able,

  991. to find our way.

  992. But then,

  993. the good news come.

  994. The gospel comes.

  995. When Christ,

  996. died on the cross,

  997. for our sin,

  998. God accepted us,

  999. as he accepted him,

  1000. and we become,

  1001. God's children.

  1002. We are the sons,

  1003. and daughters,

  1004. of the living God.

  1005. And so here,

  1006. in verse 26,

  1007. Paul says,

  1008. you are all,

  1009. sons of God,

  1010. through faith,

  1011. in Christ Jesus.

  1012. No longer,

  1013. do we fear God,

  1014. as a judge.

  1015. No longer,

  1016. do we dread him.

1017. But we come to him,

  1018. and call him,

  1019. Abba,

  1020. Papa,

  1021. or Daddy.

  1022. No longer,

  1023. is life,

  1024. meaningless.

  1025. We find meaning,

  1026. when we come,

  1027. to trust,

1028. in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1029. Now,

  1030. some of you,

  1031. like to watch,

  1032. Mr. Bean,

  1033. Rowan Atkinson.

  1034. And,

  1035. he,

  1036. once,

  1037. used a very meaningful,

  1038. sentence,

  1039. in that series,

  1040. called,

  1041. The Black Adder.

  1042. And there he said,

  1043. life,

1044. is like a broken pencil,

  1045. pointless.

  1046. For many people,

  1047. it's like that.

  1048. We are like orphans,

  1049. cosmic orphans,

  1050. no meaning,

  1051. in life.

  1052. We search,

  1053. and search,

  1054. through riches,

  1055. through wealth,

  1056. through philosophy,

  1057. and somehow,

  1058. we never find,

  1059. deep,

  1060. true satisfaction.

  1061. But when,

  1062. we come to receive,

  1063. Jesus Christ,

  1064. we become,

  1065. children of God.

  1066. Because as many,

  1067. as receive him,

  1068. to them,

  1069. God gave the right,

  1070. to become,

  1071. the children,

  1072. of God.

  1073. So,

  1074. Paul is saying,

1075. the blessing of the gospel,

  1076. it is,

  1077. you receive,

1078. not only the Holy Spirit,

  1079. you also enjoy,

  1080. sonship.

  1081. You become,

  1082. God's,

  1083. beloved children.

  1084. No longer,

  1085. is he hostile,

  1086. towards you.

  1087. He welcomes you,

  1088. into his family.

1089. And then he goes on,

  1090. to say,

  1091. for all of you,

  1092. who are baptized,

  1093. into Christ,

  1094. have clothed,

  1095. yourselves,

  1096. with Christ.

  1097. And here,

  1098. it does not mean,

1099. that if you are baptized,

  1100. and we'll be seeing,

1101. some people being baptized today,

  1102. that automatically,

  1103. saves you.

  1104. It doesn't.

1105. It has to be faith,

  1106. trust,

  1107. in the living Christ,

1108. who died for your sin.

  1109. And baptism,

  1110. is simply,

  1111. an outward confirmation,

  1112. outward sign,

  1113. of an inward conviction.

  1114. He says here,

1115. all of you were baptized,

  1116. into Christ,

  1117. joined to him.

  1118. You've clothed yourselves,

  1119. with Christ.

  1120. And here,

  1121. probably,

  1122. he's thinking of,

  1123. the Roman,

  1124. kind of ritual,

  1125. when a young boy,

  1126. suddenly becomes an adult.

  1127. He's given a white toga,

  1128. a white robe,

  1129. to wear,

  1130. called the toga,

  1131. vrilis.

  1132. And he's saying,

  1133. yes,

1134. when you become a Christian,

  1135. you've been baptized,

  1136. into Christ.

  1137. And then,

  1138. you become an adult,

1139. in terms of your faith.

  1140. And God,

1141. wants to relate to you,

  1142. in that way.

  1143. So,

1144. here is one of the blessings,

  1145. of gospel.

  1146. You grow up,

  1147. and you're accepted,

  1148. and loved,

  1149. by God.

  1150. And not only that,

  1151. he says,

  1152. there is neither Jew,

  1153. nor Greek,

  1154. slave,

  1155. nor free,

  1156. male or female,

  1157. for you're all one,

  1158. in Christ Jesus.

1159. And one of the blessings,

  1160. of the gospel,

  1161. is that,

  1162. he,

  1163. God the Holy Spirit,

  1164. brings us,

  1165. into the community,

  1166. of faith.

1167. We don't have to be,

  1168. isolated.

1169. We don't have to live,

  1170. lives by ourselves.

  1171. We live it,

  1172. in interdependence,

  1173. with our brothers,

  1174. and sisters.

  1175. One of the blessings,

  1176. that God gives,

  1177. to us today,

  1178. who believe in God,

  1179. is the church,

  1180. the family of God.

  1181. You and I,

  1182. regardless of our backgrounds,

  1183. become one,

  1184. in Christ Jesus,

  1185. accepted,

  1186. in him.

  1187. And we are part,

  1188. of his new community,

  1189. of his new,

  1190. society.

  1191. You're all,

  1192. one,

  1193. in Christ Jesus.

  1194. This again,

  1195. is the blessing,

  1196. of the gospel.

1197. Now some of you know,

  1198. that I spend a lot,

  1199. of my life,

  1200. traveling,

  1201. ministering,

  1202. around the world,

  1203. engaging with Christians,

  1204. of different culture.

1205. And whether I'm in Africa,

  1206. or Asia,

  1207. or Latin America,

  1208. or North America,

  1209. or Europe,

  1210. I find that when I meet,

  1211. fellow Christians,

  1212. whom I hardly knew,

  1213. there's that bond,

  1214. there's that oneness,

  1215. there's a joy,

  1216. we are part,

  1217. of one family.

  1218. That,

  1219. is a blessing,

  1220. of the gospel.

  1221. That is why here,

  1222. in Watermark,

  1223. we stress,

  1224. the community groups.

  1225. We want people,

  1226. to come together,

  1227. to really,

  1228. encourage,

  1229. build up one another,

  1230. so that we can,

  1231. grow together,

  1232. in the Lord.

  1233. And here is one,

  1234. of the great blessings,

  1235. of the gospel.

  1236. That,

  1237. not only do we,

  1238. become his children,

1239. we are part of his family,

  1240. family,

1241. and there is no distinction,

  1242. no rank,

  1243. as it were,

  1244. neither Jew,

  1245. nor Greek,

  1246. no slave,

  1247. nor free,

  1248. no male,

  1249. nor female.

  1250. Of course,

1251. these things are still reality.

1252. Some of us are rich,

1253. some of us are not so rich,

1254. some of us are Chinese,

  1255. others are Americans,

  1256. and some of us,

1257. some of us are male,

1258. some of us are female,

1259. but those are not distinctions,

  1260. that divide.

  1261. Because in Christ,

  1262. we become one.

1263. And this is the blessing,

  1264. of the gospel.

1265. One of the greatest thrills,

  1266. that I've experienced,

1267. when I travel around the world,

  1268. and minister,

1269. is to be able to say,

  1270. to people,

  1271. of a different color,

  1272. culture,

  1273. background,

  1274. you,

  1275. are my brother.

  1276. You are my sister.

  1277. We are part,

  1278. of God's wonderful family.

1279. And then the other blessing,

1280. is that if you belong to Christ,

1281. then you are Abraham's seed,

  1282. and heirs,

  1283. according to the promise.

  1284. Now,

1285. Abraham is a very important person,

  1286. in the history,

  1287. of the Jewish people.

  1288. He's the father,

  1289. of faith.

1290. And many faiths claim him,

  1291. the Jews,

  1292. the Muslims,

  1293. and also the Christians.

  1294. And here,

  1295. Paul is saying,

  1296. the important thing is,

  1297. that God,

  1298. chose Abraham,

1299. for a very particular purpose,

  1300. in you,

  1301. God told Abraham,

  1302. in you,

  1303. through you,

  1304. and your seed,

1305. all the families of the earth,

  1306. will be blessed.

  1307. God's purpose,

  1308. of choosing this man,

  1309. was that his blessing,

  1310. will flow,

  1311. and overflow,

  1312. to masses of people.

  1313. Now,

  1314. most of the readers,

  1315. were not Jews.

  1316. They said,

  1317. how can I relate,

  1318. to Abraham then,

  1319. in terms of flesh,

  1320. and physical,

  1321. descent,

1322. I'm not part of Abraham,

  1323. I'm not a Jew.

  1324. But Paul says,

  1325. look,

  1326. in Christ,

  1327. something wonderful has done,

  1328. has come.

  1329. All the blessings,

  1330. that Abraham inherited,

  1331. and are passing on,

  1332. to his natural heirs,

  1333. the Jews,

  1334. are now passed on,

  1335. to you Gentiles,

  1336. you non-Jews.

  1337. You can inherit,

  1338. God's blessing.

  1339. You become an heir.

  1340. You can inherit,

  1341. all the glorious blessing,

  1342. of God Almighty.

  1343. I want to close,

  1344. with just a story.

  1345. Some years ago,

  1346. in Britain,

1347. there was a very famous,

  1348. Baron,

  1349. a Lord,

  1350. called Lord Fitzgerald.

  1351. He had a wife,

  1352. and,

  1353. this wife died,

  1354. and then they had,

  1355. but,

  1356. he was left,

  1357. with a baby,

  1358. and he cared,

  1359. cared for this baby,

  1360. and the boy,

  1361. grew up,

  1362. to a teenager.

  1363. Then sadly,

  1364. one day,

  1365. this teenage son,

  1366. died.

  1367. And finally,

  1368. Baron Fitzgerald,

  1369. also died.

  1370. But he left,

  1371. a huge collection,

  1372. of art,

  1373. precious art,

  1374. masterpieces.

  1375. He also,

  1376. drew up a will,

  1377. and he wanted,

  1378. all his paintings,

  1379. masterpieces,

  1380. to be sold,

  1381. after,

  1382. he died.

  1383. And then,

1384. the day of the sale,

  1385. came.

  1386. It was a huge,

  1387. crowd of people.

  1388. There were the museum,

  1389. curators,

  1390. and there were,

  1391. the private collectors,

1392. all wanting to buy up,

  1393. these very precious,

  1394. masterpieces.

  1395. The first lot,

  1396. was a painting.

  1397. It was a painting,

  1398. of the teenage son.

  1399. And it was entitled,

  1400. My Beloved Son.

1401. It was a very poor picture.

  1402. A poor oil.

  1403. It was not painted,

  1404. by a famous artist,

  1405. but the title was,

  1406. My Beloved Son.

  1407. And so,

  1408. the auction began,

  1409. and the auctioneer said,

  1410. who would,

  1411. start,

  1412. with a bid,

  1413. for this picture?

  1414. For a long time,

  1415. there was no bidding.

  1416. And then finally,

  1417. somebody,

  1418. put up his hand,

  1419. and says,

  1420. for 15 shillings,

1421. it was less than a pound.

  1422. Very little money.

  1423. And he says,

1424. anybody wants to buy it?

  1425. No?

  1426. Going,

  1427. going,

  1428. going,

  1429. gone.

  1430. So,

  1431. the picture,

  1432. went to that man,

  1433. the portrait,

  1434. of the son.

  1435. And then the auctioneer,

  1436. stopped and said,

  1437. excuse me,

  1438. sir,

1439. why are you buying this painting?

  1440. Because,

  1441. artistically,

1442. it wasn't great at all.

1443. It wasn't worth very much.

1444. And then the man said,

1445. I used to be the servant,

  1446. of Lord Fitzgerald,

1447. and I used to care,

  1448. for that child.

  1449. I want it.

  1450. And then,

  1451. the auctioneer says,

1452. the entire sale is over,

  1453. and everyone is horrified.

  1454. He says,

  1455. here is the will.

1456. Anyone who buys that picture,

  1457. my beloved son,

  1458. inherits all the masterpieces.

  1459. That's the same way

  1460. with Jesus Christ.

  1461. God is saying,

1462. anyone who trusts in Jesus,

  1463. in Jesus alone,

1464. for his or her salvation,

  1465. inherits everything.

1466. All the blessings of Abraham,

1467. both spiritual as well as material.

1468. And let's not be saying,

1469. only spiritual blessings will be ours.

  1470. No.

1471. God wants to bless us,

  1472. prosper us as well.

  1473. And so,

1474. I want to close by saying,

1475. to each one of us,

1476. as we look at Galatians,

1477. God wants to pour out

  1478. his blessing on us.

  1479. The gospel,

  1480. yes,

  1481. is very exclusive.

1482. There's only one way to God,

  1483. it's through Jesus,

  1484. and Jesus alone.

1485. And the basis of our salvation,

1486. the very basis of our gospel,

  1487. is the cross.

1488. And the way that we can be accepted

  1489. by the Lord,

1490. is through faith in the Lord Jesus.

  1491. There's no other way.

1492. Good works will not do.

1493. Being religious will not do.

1494. But the moment we say,

  1495. yes, God,

  1496. I trust in Jesus.

1497. As in a few moments,

1498. the people who are getting baptized

  1499. will be declaring,

  1500. we trust in Jesus.

1501. But when we do that,

1502. we become beloved sons and daughters

  1503. of the living God.

  1504. And all the blessings

1505. that God wants to pour out

  1506. on his people

1507. will be ours as well.

1508. So we don't want to be like the Galatians

1509. because Paul had to castigate them,

  1510. scold them.

  1511. You're so stupid.

  1512. You're dumb-dumb.

  1513. You're nincompoops.

1514. Why do you want to go back

  1515. to the law

  1516. when everything is free?

  1517. God's grace is free.

  1518. Accept it.

  1519. Accept it.

  1520. And accept the acceptance.

1521. The famous words of Paul Tillich.

  1522. Do it.

1523. God has done everything for you.

  1524. And so today,

1525. God is saying to us,

  1526. will we respond?

1527. And if you have never,

  1528. never accepted Jesus

  1529. into your life,

  1530. you're not a child of God,

  1531. the answer is

  1532. not try.

1533. Try to work your way to heaven.

1534. It's like trying to lift yourself up

  1535. with your bootstraps

  1536. or shoelaces.

  1537. That will not work

1538. because the Christian faith is done.

  1539. Christ has done everything

1540. on the cross for you

1541. and all you have to do is say,

  1542. I trust you.

1543. All you have to say,

  1544. like the hymn writer,

1545. nothing in my hands I bring,

1546. simply to thy cross I cling.

1547. Naked come to thee for dress.

1548. Helpless look to thee for grace.

  1549. That's it.

  1550. To look to God,

  1551. to say,

  1552. Lord,

  1553. save me.

1554. Bring me into your family.

1555. And when you do that,

  1556. he will love you,

  1557. he will accept you.

  1558. So make today

  1559. a very special day,

1560. a day where you can say,

  1561. Lord,

1562. I want you ready to come into my life.

1563. You've done everything for me.

1564. Out of gratitude to you,

  1565. I place,

  1566. I give myself

  1567. wholly to you.

1568. And when you say that,

  1569. you will enjoy

  1570. the blessings of Abraham,

1571. you become a child of faith,

  1572. and you will know

  1573. God's kindness

  1574. and generosity

  1575. and blessings

  1576. on you.

  1577. Let's pray together.

  1578. Lord,

  1579. we marvel

  1580. at your love,

  1581. at your grace.

  1582. You should

  1583. reach out to us

  1584. who are sinners,

  1585. who sinned against you,

  1586. who offended you,

  1587. who've hurt so many,

  1588. many people.

  1589. And yet,

1590. through the cross of Jesus,

  1591. through his death,

  1592. through his dying

  1593. for our sin,

  1594. you have accepted us

  1595. and made us

  1596. members of your family.

  1597. And we are truly,

  1598. truly grateful.

  1599. So thank you,

  1600. Lord.

  1601. Thank you,

  1602. Lord.

  1603. And give us faith

  1604. to respond to you,

  1605. to love you.

  1606. We may become

1607. children of the living God.

  1608. In Jesus' name.

  1609. Amen.

  1610. Hey,

1611. just a couple quick announcements

1612. I just want to share with you.

  1613. I have two slides.

  1614. Last Friday,

  1615. my,

  1616. our community group,

1617. if you're not in a community group,

1618. you've got to be in a community group.

  1619. Our community group

  1620. did our first outreach.

  1621. And so we invited

  1622. 50 of our friends

1623. who aren't part of Watermark

1624. or any part of relationship

  1625. or churches.

1626. And we took them to this place

  1627. in Appalachau,

  1628. a winery.

  1629. And it was amazing

1630. just to see them make wines

  1631. and to drink wine

1632. and people kind of loosen up

1633. after a couple glasses of wine.

1634. And you didn't hear me say that,

  1635. okay?

  1636. But anyway,

1637. so it was a great experience.

1638. I think we got two pictures of there.

1639. And so if you're not

  1640. in a community group,

1641. you see what you're missing out on?

  1642. Free wine.

  1643. Cheese and chocolate.

1644. I tried to get the Diet Coke in there,

1645. but they said it didn't work

1646. with the wine and cheese thing

  1647. and anything like that.

  1648. Also,

1649. we're about to go out

  1650. to the community,

1651. to the baptism right out here.

1652. And so we just ask for you

  1653. not to run away

  1654. because we want everybody

  1655. to partake in this.

  1656. We're going to have

  1657. the baptism candidates

  1658. come up front.

1659. And then we will afterwards

  1660. go eat.

1661. We have a lot of food

1662. in a buffet over there,

1663. so we'd love for you to do that.

1664. In the middle of that time,

  1665. there's going to be

  1666. some university students

1667. walking around with baked goods.

  1668. They have been baking

1669. for like four days straight.

1670. And all of these goods

1671. are going to be sold

  1672. or donated,

  1673. donations from you,

  1674. and they're all going

  1675. towards their mission outreach

1676. that they're going to be doing

  1677. in the Philippines

  1678. coming up very soon.

1679. So we want to encourage you

1680. to buy some baked goods

1681. and be a part of sending

  1682. a university student

  1683. to a mission trip

  1684. in the Philippines.

  1685. Also,

1686. the last Sunday of May,

  1687. May 27th,

1688. write it out on your calendar.

  1689. We're going to have

  1690. a beach trip,

  1691. beach party.

  1692. So immediately

  1693. after the service,

  1694. there'll be buses outside.

1695. We'll just get on the buses.

  1696. We have a beach.

  1697. It's our private beach.

1698. St. Stephen's Beach is great.

  1699. And we'll go there

  1700. as a church family

1701. and just kind of hang out

  1702. and have fun.

  1703. Aussies will have plenty

  1704. of sunscreen lotion

1705. so you can soap yourself up.

  1706. Americans,

  1707. don't worry about it.

  1708. You'll just get dark.

  1709. But we want you

1710. to be a part of that.

  1711. Okay.

  1712. And also,

  1713. I'm going to ask

  1714. the baptism candidates

  1715. to come forward.

  1716. So the baptism candidates.

  1717. So in your booklet,

  1718. you've got a booklet here

  1719. and it's a story

  1720. of all these people

1721. who are getting baptized today.

  1722. So Judy

  1723. and Victoria

  1724. and Henrika

  1725. and Ivy,

1726. you want to come up here

  1727. real quickly?

  1728. Okay.

  1729. Come on.

  1730. And so to me,

  1731. this is like one

  1732. of the amazing things

  1733. of being a pastor

1734. is you get to see God

  1735. just change people's lives.

1736. And so I'm going to put

  1737. Victoria on the spot

  1738. because I asked her

1739. and we see your testimony

  1740. in here,

  1741. Victoria,

  1742. and just it's amazing

  1743. what God's done

1744. and brought you to this place.

  1745. And I thought maybe

  1746. you could just share

  1747. for like,

  1748. this is unrehearsed altogether.

  1749. So maybe just share

1750. for a minute or two

  1751. of just the journey

  1752. you've been on

1753. and how God brought you

  1754. to this point.

  1755. So I was born

  1756. into a Christian family

  1757. so I went to

  1758. a Christian elementary school,

  1759. you know,

  1760. sang all the songs,

  1761. did the prayers,

  1762. but I never really

  1763. took it to heart.

1764. And then in middle school,

  1765. my family moved

  1766. because of work

  1767. and the community

  1768. was during Sunday

1769. so my parents told me

1770. that not going to church

  1771. was just temporary.

  1772. So I thought,

  1773. okay,

1774. when I start to drive,

1775. I can start going to church.

1776. But once I started driving,

  1777. I didn't go back.

  1778. I started drifting

  1779. really far from God

  1780. and I ended up

  1781. making excuses

1782. to not to go to church,

  1783. you know,

  1784. too tired,

  1785. I didn't feel like it.

1786. And then when I came

  1787. to university,

  1788. actually my priorities

  1789. in life

  1790. weren't about Jesus anymore.

  1791. They were,

  1792. I had bigger idols

  1793. in my life,

  1794. you know,

  1795. fame, money, school,

  1796. all that.

  1797. And my mom had

  1798. two criterias for me,

1799. one, do well in school

1800. and two, join a church.

  1801. So I actually found

  1802. a flyer of Watermark

  1803. ICF,

  1804. International Christian Fellowship

1805. on the ground at HKU.

  1806. And then I thought,

  1807. oh, that's really cool.

1808. So I went to it

  1809. and then I remember

  1810. the environment

  1811. was so friendly

  1812. that I thought

  1813. it was too good

  1814. to be true.

  1815. So I was really

  1816. intimidated at first.

  1817. So I wasn't very

1818. into it for a semester

  1819. because I was feeling

  1820. guilty that I drifted

  1821. so away from God.

  1822. And then second semester,

1823. I went on my first retreat

  1824. and that's when

  1825. I fully gave

  1826. my life to Jesus.

  1827. And I remember

  1828. the day after

  1829. I came back

  1830. from the retreat,

  1831. I was just walking

  1832. through the streets

  1833. of Hong Kong

  1834. just with my head

  1835. lifted higher

  1836. and just a slight

  1837. smile on my face.

  1838. And like coming

  1839. to a new country

  1840. is really scary.

  1841. I mean, of course,

  1842. Hong Kong.

  1843. I walked around

  1844. the streets

  1845. very impatient

  1846. and very guarded.

  1847. And I just remember

1848. just feeling so much happier

  1849. after the retreat.

  1850. And it doesn't seem

  1851. like a big deal,

1852. but it was a major change

1853. for me because it wasn't

  1854. until then that

  1855. I realized how angry

  1856. at myself

  1857. and others around me

  1858. that I was.

1859. And I just wake up

  1860. every day

  1861. just so much happier

1862. because back in high school,

  1863. I would go,

1864. like months at a time,

  1865. go to bed

  1866. and wish that

  1867. I wouldn't wake up.

1868. So it was a really

  1869. depressed time for me.

  1870. And...

  1871. Sorry.

  1872. That's okay.

1873. I never cry up here,

1874. so don't worry about it.

  1875. Oh my God.

  1876. And...

  1877. That's okay.

  1878. I remember

  1879. after the retreat,

  1880. sorry.

  1881. Like,

  1882. I didn't feel that anymore.

1883. And that was a big change

  1884. for me,

  1885. accepting

  1886. presence into my life.

  1887. That's okay.

  1888. That's okay.

  1889. Just relax.

  1890. Yeah.

  1891. So...

  1892. Thank you.

  1893. It's a thank you.

  1894. Wow.

  1895. You are so good.

  1896. Thank you.

  1897. So I realized

  1898. that looking back

  1899. at my life,

  1900. I had so much...

  1901. I had no peace

  1902. within my life,

  1903. so accepting Jesus

  1904. completely changed

1905. my life and my behavior.

  1906. I mean,

  1907. I woke up

  1908. thanking God so much

  1909. for every single day

  1910. he has given me,

  1911. you know,

  1912. days that I wish

  1913. I could forever

  1914. escape from before.

  1915. So,

  1916. yeah.

  1917. That's my story.

  1918. Good.

  1919. That's good.

  1920. If...

  1921. If there's someone

  1922. in here maybe

1923. who is where you were,

1924. a year or two ago

  1925. and feeling that

  1926. tension

  1927. and that lack

  1928. of peace

  1929. or that

  1930. rowing against

  1931. the stream,

  1932. I think like what

  1933. Pastor Charles said

  1934. and like,

  1935. where am I going?

  1936. Would you share any...

  1937. What would you want

  1938. them to know?

  1939. What would you share

  1940. with them?

  1941. For so many years

  1942. of my life,

1943. I tried to find happiness

  1944. in a fulfilled life

  1945. by myself,

  1946. but it wasn't until

  1947. I accepted Jesus

1948. or when I came here

  1949. that I realized

  1950. that I couldn't do

  1951. that by myself.

  1952. I really...

  1953. I desperately needed

  1954. Jesus to trust him.

  1955. You were so sweet.

  1956. Yeah,

  1957. so I desperately needed

  1958. him to save me

  1959. from my depressed

  1960. lifestyle.

  1961. So,

1962. I would just say that,

  1963. just acknowledge

  1964. that you need

  1965. Jesus Christ

  1966. in your life

  1967. in order to change.

  1968. Amen.

  1969. Amen.

  1970. Thank you.

  1971. Okay,

  1972. so baptism

  1973. is not about...

  1974. Now they get baptized,

  1975. they are Christians,

  1976. right?

1977. So baptism is an outward

  1978. symbol of something

  1979. that's already happened

  1980. inwardly within all

  1981. of their hearts

  1982. as they cry.

  1983. I have some more

  1984. tissue there.

  1985. I don't normally

  1986. have this effect

  1987. on people,

  1988. but God does.

  1989. And so,

  1990. as they come before,

  1991. they're not becoming

  1992. Christians right now.

  1993. They've become believers.

  1994. They put their faith

  1995. in Christ,

  1996. and so they want

  1997. to demonstrate

  1998. what God has done

  1999. in their life

  2000. openly to the

  2001. Watermark family

  2002. and for everyone here

  2003. to celebrate God's

  2004. amazing goodness

  2005. in their life.

  2006. And so that's why

2007. we're going to do that.

2008. And so I'm going to pray

2009. for you guys right now

  2010. and then we're all

2011. going to make our way

  2012. out to...

  2013. We spent...

  2014. We spared no expense

  2015. in getting an amazing

  2016. pool out here.

  2017. You're going to laugh

  2018. when you see it.

2019. And we're going to do

  2020. the baptisms out here.

  2021. So don't leave,

  2022. please,

  2023. because you're going

  2024. to want to be

  2025. a part of this

  2026. is what God's doing

  2027. in our family.

  2028. This is why

  2029. you serve.

2030. This is why you tithe.

2031. This is why you do

  2032. what you do

  2033. to allow this church

  2034. to exist.

  2035. And so we're going

  2036. to make our way

  2037. out there

  2038. and change our clothes,

  2039. right?

2040. And then you'll be able

  2041. to see...

  2042. And we'll sing

  2043. little songs out there

  2044. afterwards too

  2045. as a family affair.

2046. So let me pray for us.

2047. Father, I just thank you

  2048. for my dear sisters.

  2049. I just thank you

  2050. for Ivy and Judy

  2051. and Henrica

  2052. and Victoria

  2053. and just what you've

  2054. done in their life.

2055. And I know there are

  2056. people here right now

2057. who've come to know you

  2058. this year

2059. and they still don't know

2060. if they have the courage

  2061. to come up

  2062. and be baptized.

  2063. And Lord,

2064. I just pray that you

  2065. would fill them

  2066. with your peace.

  2067. And I thank you

  2068. for this journey

  2069. that you have

  2070. these four women on.

2071. And just as they can

  2072. look back

  2073. at your amazingness

  2074. and that you've

  2075. brought them here.

  2076. I pray that they

  2077. would never forget

  2078. this day,

  2079. that they would have

2080. this put on their heart

  2081. as a reminder

  2082. of just how faithful

  2083. you are.

2084. And we pray for those

  2085. in Hong Kong

2086. and this side of the island

2087. who don't know you yet.

  2088. Father,

2089. we just pray for many,

  2090. many, many more baptisms

2091. in the years to come

  2092. as you allow us

  2093. as a church

  2094. to reach out

  2095. and to share

  2096. the most important thing

  2097. in our life.

  2098. So Lord,

  2099. we love you

  2100. and we worship you

  2101. and we praise you

  2102. for these stories

  2103. in this booklet.

2104. We know that you are

  2105. the God of stories.

  2106. And so we pray

  2107. these things

2108. in your son Jesus' name.

  2109. Amen.

  2110. Okay,

2111. so we're going to change

2112. and we're going to meet

  2113. everybody out there.

  2114. And then again,

2115. we have a lot of food

2116. so we're going to kind of,

  2117. I think we're locking

  2118. that door,

  2119. I don't know,

2120. but try to go out this way

2121. and we'll kind of go around

2122. and we'll meet you out there.
