  1. Amen. You guys glad to be here today?

  2. What an incredible day to sing together.

  3. All nations and tribes and peoples from all over the world.

  4. Right here in one room. That's a cool thing.

  5. We're going to do a responsive reading together, if that's okay.

  6. So let's just focus our hearts now on what we're about to say to our Lord.

  7. Merciful God, we think of the freedom that Paul speaks about.

  8. And too often we accept it as the freedom to do what we like,

  9. rather than being obedient to you and serious about reflecting your character into our world.

  10. We confess with shame that whenever we bite and devour one another,

  11. such things as discord and factions exist, even within our faith communities.

  12. Forgive us when we use our freedom to be self-indulgent instead of serving one another in love.

  13. We confess that we fail miserably when we try on our own to live lives that are shaped by love, joy, and peace,

  14. patience, kindness, and goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

  15. Forgive us when we fail to be led and guided by the Holy Spirit,

  16. who enables our lives to produce such freedom, which enrich and enhance our lives,

  17. and through us the lives of those.

  18. So merciful God, we confess also our failure to seek the empowerment of your Holy Spirit

  19. when we're confronted daily with the challenges of following Jesus.

  20. When we look at the cost that Jesus sets on his discipleship,

  21. we confess that so often we fail to meet that cost.

  22. So forgive us when we fail to take Jesus' demands on our lives seriously enough,

  23. forgetting that out of love for us, he has already walked the hard road the way of the cross.

  24. So gracious and loving God, in and through Jesus Christ,

  25. you have given us the freedom and the power to live by your Holy Spirit and be guided by him.

  26. May our acceptance of these gifts be visible as we bear profusely the fruit of the Spirit,

  27. and as we faithfully follow Jesus on the challenging road of discipleship.

  28. This we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

  29. Let's be seated together.

  30. Amen.

  31. The scripture reading today comes from Paul's letters to the Galatians, chapters 5 and 6.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  32. Please read along in your bulletin with us.

  33. If we live by the Spirit, let us walk also by the Spirit.

  34. Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.

  35. Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual,

  36. restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, each one looking to yourself,

  37. so that you too will not be tempted.

  38. Bear one another's burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ.

  39. For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

  40. But each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason for boasting in regard to himself alone,

  41. and not in regard to another.

  42. For each one will bear his own load.

  43. The one who has taught the word is to share all good things with the one who teaches him.

  44. Do not be deceived.

  45. God is not mocked.

  46. For whatever a man sows, this he will also reap.

  47. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption.

  48. But the one who sows from the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

  49. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.

  50. So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,

  51. and especially to those who are of the household of the faith.

  52. This is the reading of the word of the Lord.

  53. Let's be seated together.

  54. A lot of cables up here.

  55. How you guys doing?

  56. I get to say that at least one time, right?

  57. I try not to repeat myself.

  58. Hey, we are going on a journey in Galatians.

  59. We're about to finish it today.

  60. And if you were here last week,

  61. during the sermon, we had a very interesting experience.

  62. Often it's kind of one of those experiences where you talk about them later,

  63. as if heaven meets earth,

  64. and our flesh meets God's Spirit.

  65. And when that happens,

  66. we don't know what's going to happen.

  67. So I wanted to,

  68. one of the things, you know,

  69. as a church,

  70. when we started at Watermark,

  71. we said we wanted to be a church family.

  72. And the goal was to make it where we come,

  73. and we discuss things as a family.

  74. Like, we'll talk about what's going on in our life,

  75. and in our world.

  76. Kind of like our dinner table as a family.

  77. And I felt like enough stuff happened

  78. last Sunday.

  79. Maybe we should talk about this a little,

  80. and Q&A,

  81. because we do Q&As.

  82. If this is your first time,

  83. we do Q&As here,

  84. probably once every five or six sermons,

  85. especially if it's a topic that's intense,

  86. or there's a lot of questions.

  87. And so,

  88. just to begin off with it,

  89. Pastor Charles was preaching,

  90. and about 26 minutes into his sermon,

  91. there's,

  92. like I said,

  93. there seemed to be a collision of the physical

  94. and the spiritual world,

  95. and all these dynamics interplaying.

  96. And it just became apparent that God

  97. had something different planned for the church.

  98. than his sermon.

  99. And God kind of took it in a different direction,

  100. and we've seen just people's,

  101. their reactions to that,

  102. and their blessings to that,

  103. and what they've done in their life.

  104. And just so you know,

  105. Pastor Charles,

  106. okay,

  107. he's here today.

  108. He went through the test,

  109. and everything is good.

  110. There's no physical reason,

  111. or mental reason.

  112. There was just,

  113. and so he's healthy,

  114. and so he's great,

  115. and he wants to thank everybody for prayers,

  116. and just for everybody's concern during that time.

  117. And as people started asking questions,

  118. I started writing them out,

  119. and it seemed like the questions came

  120. in a series of four kind of categories.

  121. And so I just want to talk about them really briefly,

  122. just because,

  123. like we've said,

  124. we're on this journey,

  125. and we're kind of laying a foundation

  126. as a church family on this journey,

  127. and what that looks like as we walk with God.

  128. And so the questions seem to be in these categories,

  129. and I'm just going to read them out as I heard them.

  130. I had several friends who were not believers.

  131. They're here,

  132. and we know that there are a lot of people here

  133. who haven't stepped onto their journey as a Christian,

  134. that they're on a spiritual journey,

  135. but they haven't entered into the family of God yet.

  136. And so that's why this church has started,

  137. because we want and believe

  138. in not taking people from other churches,

  139. but reaching people who aren't going to church.

  140. And some of my friends and people ask questions,

  141. and some young Christians ask these same type of questions.

  142. What does it mean when everyone is talking

  143. about spiritual warfare or spiritual battle?

  144. That seemed to be like one of the categories.

  145. And so as we talk about that,

  146. just realizing that the Christian life

  147. is a supernatural life,

  148. that there are spiritual dynamics at work all around us.

  149. One of the founding fathers of the colonies,

  150. if you're British,

  151. America if you're an American,

  152. Thomas Jefferson didn't believe in anything supernatural.

  153. And so he would take his Bible,

  154. and he basically ripped out every passage

  155. that talked about supernatural things.

  156. Miracles, healings, the Red Sea,

  157. all these things.

  158. So he just,

  159. and so he said,

  160. it just can't be,

  161. I can't believe in a supernatural thing.

  162. But what he realized is when he did that,

  163. his Bible was like that thin.

  164. Because there wasn't really much left in that sense.

  165. And so as we walk on this journey,

  166. we realize that there's a spiritual world,

  167. and there's a spiritual dimension.

  168. And scripture talks about it quite often,

  169. that there is,

  170. there are angels,

  171. and there are demons,

  172. and there's Satan.

  173. And we learn in Ephesians,

  174. as Paul talks,

  175. that our battle isn't against this flesh and blood,

  176. but our battle is against principalities,

  177. and kingdoms,

  178. and forces that we will never see.

  179. And I think that sometimes freaks us out.

  180. We'll see them when we get to heaven,

  181. our final destination.

  182. And it seems like,

  183. you know,

  184. even if I were to say right now,

  185. as I understand scripture,

  186. angels are looking down on us.

  187. There are angels in this room.

  188. And there are forces trying to cause people

  189. to not think and not focus,

  190. and miss what God's word has to teach them

  191. and say today.

  192. And so there's this battle going on all around us.

  193. And I think sometimes we take that too lightly,

  194. and we forget that there is a spiritual realm,

  195. and there's a huge struggle.

  196. Our body isn't just physical,

  197. our body is spiritual.

  198. And whenever we try to separate those two,

  199. like I say,

  200. how are you doing today?

  201. You go,

  202. well,

  203. in my thought life,

  204. I'm doing terrible,

  205. but in my physical life,

  206. I'm doing great.

  207. You know,

  208. Jesus would have never understood that language.

  209. Because in Jesus,

  210. the physical and the spiritual are all intertwined.

  211. They all work together.

  212. They're all,

  213. so when they say,

  214. how are you doing?

  215. We're saying,

  216. how are you doing spiritually?

  217. And physically,

  218. and all that encompasses you,

  219. that's who you are as a person.

  220. So there's a spiritual war going on,

  221. and John 4 says that God is spirit,

  222. and we worship him in spirit and truth.

  223. Another question that kind of came up a couple times

  224. was just the idea of,

  225. well,

  226. if all the things are happening around us,

  227. we talk about these spiritual things,

  228. is everything spiritual?

  229. Losing my job,

  230. is that spiritual?

  231. Is that spiritual?

  232. Bumping my car as I'm driving,

  233. and I get an accident,

  234. is that spiritual?

  235. Dropping my milk at the dinner table,

  236. is that spiritual?

  237. And I think that the scripture says,

  238. it's yes and no.

  239. That if you look at the timeline of creation,

  240. we have this period where God created,

  241. and then we have this period where everything fell,

  242. and it was corrupted.

  243. And then we have this period where Christ came,

  244. and he redeemed everything.

  245. And then we have this period that we're living in now,

  246. it's kind of the in-between times,

  247. it's the shadow lands that C.S. Lewis would talk about,

  248. that it's just here,

  249. but not yet here.

  250. We read scripture,

  251. and we understand it,

  252. but it hasn't yet been fully fulfilled in our lives,

  253. and we wonder what God is doing in that sense.

  254. And as we look at that,

  255. scripture is really clear in Ephesians,

  256. that we struggle against three things.

  257. We struggle against our flesh,

  258. my sinful nature,

  259. who I am,

  260. my selfishness,

  261. all those things that were opposite of what Pastor Troll was talking about yesterday,

  262. greed,

  263. and envy,

  264. and guilt,

  265. and shame,

  266. all these things we struggle against.

  267. We struggle against the fallen world.

  268. The Bible says that when sin came into the world,

  269. it fractured everything.

  270. It fractured creation,

  271. that we have these tsunamis,

  272. we have earthquakes,

  273. we have these things that happen,

  274. and people look at them,

  275. and they just understand what's going on,

  276. and they go,

  277. well,

  278. if God were good,

  279. why would he create a world like this?

  280. And you go back to them,

  281. and he goes,

  282. he didn't.

  283. He created a perfect world.

  284. But we came,

  285. and we made poor choices,

  286. and sin entered in,

  287. and it fractured all these things.

  288. And then we have the spiritual realm,

  289. that is Satan,

  290. and demons,

  291. and Romans talks about that a lot.

  292. And the question is,

  293. how do we discern what's happening in our life,

  294. and in our world?

  295. And my answer to that is,

  296. I don't know.

  297. I mean,

  298. sometimes,

  299. it's really clear,

  300. and sometimes,

  301. there's a combination of everything.

  302. And I realize,

  303. as people,

  304. we're very complicated.

  305. To say,

  306. this is your problem,

  307. is probably taking things too lightly,

  308. in our world.

  309. I mean,

  310. sometimes you know,

  311. right?

  312. I mean,

  313. sometimes you've been around somebody for so long,

  314. like my wife,

  315. I walk past her,

  316. and she looks at me,

  317. and I turn around,

  318. and I go,

  319. you were checking me out,

  320. weren't you?

  321. Well,

  322. I know that,

  323. because we've spent a lot of time with each other,

  324. and we know how each other thinks,

  325. right?

  326. We know how each other thinks,

  327. and that's just,

  328. that's just,

  329. that's a relationship.

  330. Right?

  331. And so,

  332. we know that,

  333. as we spend more time with God,

  334. and we spend more time in His Word,

  335. and we get into this relationship with Him,

  336. we understand when He's speaking to us,

  337. we understand when there's something weird here,

  338. we understand when things don't seem right,

  339. and we know how to pray,

  340. and I think community within this is really important.

  341. That if you're a part of the community of God,

  342. and you're not in the community,

  343. then you're kind of like this sheep,

  344. and you're wandering around,

  345. and you're going to get killed.

  346. But God meant for the family of God to come together,

  347. and be in a community,

  348. and so there's all these dynamics,

  349. our flesh,

  350. the world,

  351. Satan,

  352. and all these things are kind of coming in there,

  353. and we just need to be aware of that.

  354. We don't need to be afraid of that,

  355. but we just need to be aware of that,

  356. and understand what's going on,

  357. and community is very helpful in that time.

  358. Jesus told this parable one time,

  359. we taught on it already probably three months ago,

  360. when he talked about the sower.

  361. I made all the mess when I was throwing the corn everywhere,

  362. and everybody complained about it afterwards,

  363. because it took us two hours to pick it up after everybody left.

  364. But he says,

  365. you know,

  366. the sower sows the seed,

  367. and the word of God goes out,

  368. and it lands on a hard ground,

  369. and this bird,

  370. the devil comes,

  371. and he takes it away,

  372. so spiritual.

  373. Then the sower sows his seed,

  374. and it lands in the rocky ground,

  375. and the ground full of weeds,

  376. and concerns,

  377. and desires,

  378. and greed come up,

  379. and they choke it out,

  380. physical,

  381. in my body.

  382. So all these things are happening as God's word is so.

  383. Does that make sense?

  384. So to say this is physical,

  385. and that's spiritual,

  386. it's probably a combination of all those things in our world,

  387. and we just need to be aware of that as we think about that.

  388. Another question people said is,

  389. well,

  390. how do I handle this?

  391. What am I supposed to do?

  392. I'm afraid.

  393. And I said,

  394. don't be afraid.

  395. Don't freak out.

  396. Walk with God.

  397. In Job 1,

  398. there's a story of Job is there.

  399. God is there in heaven.

  400. It says,

  401. the sons of God came to heaven,

  402. and Job 1,

  403. and it says,

  404. Satan joined them,

  405. which that passage always just weirds me out.

  406. I don't understand it.

  407. There's a lot of things in Scripture that drive me crazy.

  408. And in that passage,

  409. God starts the whole book of Job by saying,

  410. hey,

  411. have you looked at Job?

  412. He's a great guy.

  413. And the devil goes,

  414. well,

  415. of course he's great,

  416. because you protect him.

  417. You do everything for him.

  418. Let me get into his life,

  419. and he will curse you.

  420. And there's a really interesting passage.

  421. God says to him,

  422. okay,

  423. but you can't take his life.

  424. And what we see there in that dynamic

  425. is that God is in control of everything.

  426. Nothing,

  427. if you're a child of God,

  428. nothing can happen in your life

  429. without God allowing it to happen.

  430. A hair cannot fall from your head.

  431. We're going to study that next week in Luke.

  432. That cannot happen

  433. unless God allows that to happen in your life.

  434. And so we have the confidence of knowing

  435. that no matter what's going on around us,

  436. if we're walking with God,

  437. God is in control.

  438. We don't need to fear.

  439. So what do you do?

  440. Well,

  441. when I was a young Christian,

  442. I was in Colorado.

  443. We were at Colorado Springs.

  444. Mark would appreciate this.

  445. We were out sharing our faith,

  446. and we came on this strip,

  447. and there was this occult bookstore.

  448. And I was like,

  449. okay,

  450. I'm going to go in there

  451. and share the gospel with those people,

  452. and they're going to hear about Christ,

  453. and all the demons are going to flee out of there,

  454. and I'm going to go,

  455. wow,

  456. God is great.

  457. And so I said,

  458. okay,

  459. I'll do that.

  460. And I started walking towards this door,

  461. and I got to this door,

  462. and I couldn't move.

  463. I mean,

  464. literally,

  465. it was like this force field was in front of me.

  466. And I had never experienced anything like that.

  467. And I hesitated for like four or five seconds.

  468. I'm like,

  469. and finally I just turned around.

  470. I said,

  471. okay,

  472. I'm not supposed to go in there.

  473. So don't go looking for demons.

  474. Don't go grab a whole bunch of books about exorcism,

  475. or what do I do,

  476. or how do I speak into that.

  477. Walk with God.

  478. Spend time with Him.

  479. Pray.

  480. Be in community.

  481. God will take care of you.

  482. There's some times in my life

  483. when I feel an incredible spiritual attack.

  484. I just say,

  485. Lord Jesus,

  486. I need you.

  487. Can you repeat that after me?

  488. Lord Jesus,

  489. I need you.

  490. Lord Jesus,

  491. I need you.

  492. Sometimes I'll say,

  493. Jesus,

  494. Son of God,

  495. have mercy on me,

  496. a sinner.

  497. Can you say that?

  498. Jesus,

  499. Son of God,

  500. have mercy on me,

  501. a sinner.

  502. Don't be writing out these long prayers.

  503. You got to pray every word just perfectly,

  504. then demons will flee.

  505. That's just not in the Bible.

  506. We're told in 1 Peter,

  507. that when Peter was,

  508. when Michael,

  509. the archangel,

  510. was arguing over

  511. Moses' body

  512. with Satan,

  513. he just said,

  514. the Lord,

  515. the Lord rebuke you,

  516. then Satan plead.

  517. So don't spend a lot of time

  518. talking to the demons.

  519. Talk to Jesus

  520. because he's our advocate.

  521. He's the one that goes before us.

  522. He's the one that has the power.

  523. He's the one that's going to vanquish

  524. the spiritual things.

  525. Talk to Jesus.

  526. Finally,

  527. the question came up

  528. a couple times,

  529. why do you think this is happening

  530. at Watermark now?

  531. Well,

  532. I don't know.

  533. I think there's a battle.

  534. I think we're in a spiritual battle.

  535. I think there's a battle for our hearts.

  536. There's some of you in here right now

  537. who are wondering,

  538. you know,

  539. is this church really

  540. worth giving all my life to?

  541. Should I hold on to my job

  542. or some things that give me

  543. a little comfort

  544. that I can realize right away

  545. because sometimes the church

  546. doesn't really satisfy me

  547. the way I need to be satisfied?

  548. There's a spiritual battle going on.

  549. We realize that the minute

  550. we plan the church here,

  551. we realize that we're coming

  552. into this area

  553. where Satan doesn't want us to be.

  554. He's not rejoicing

  555. that people are coming to Christ.

  556. He's not rejoicing

  557. that we're doing a baptism out there.

  558. He doesn't want those things

  559. to happen like that.

  560. And so you have to realize

  561. as we walk,

  562. as Mark and I were talking

  563. this last week,

  564. it's kind of like

  565. we're this point of this arrow.

  566. And we're this point of this arrow

  567. and we're penetrating darkness.

  568. And when you're in the point of the arrow,

  569. you're going to feel

  570. a lot of tension

  571. and a lot of friction

  572. and things are going to be difficult.

  573. But you know that it's God

  574. who's pushing that arrow

  575. through those things in our life

  576. and we can trust Him.

  577. We realize that when we built

  578. a church based on the gospel

  579. and community

  580. and reaching out where you live,

  581. Satan doesn't like that.

  582. We realize when we started

  583. to preach last Sunday

  584. on the fruit of the Spirit

  585. and what it looks like

  586. to walk with God,

  587. love, joy, peace, patience,

  588. kindness, gentleness, self-control.

  589. Satan doesn't want us

  590. to think about those things.

  591. And so as we move forward,

  592. my desire for us as a church

  593. is just to move forward

  594. with our eyes open,

  595. to be praying.

  596. There's a passage right after

  597. Jesus comes out of the wilderness,

  598. which I think is really interesting.

  599. Satan tempted Him.

  600. And after Jesus said,

  601. it is written,

  602. it is written,

  603. it is written,

  604. which is a great way

  605. to realize how we fight

  606. spiritual battle.

  607. We just go to God's Word.

  608. It says that Satan

  609. removed himself

  610. and waited for an opportune time

  611. to come back.

  612. I think we as a church

  613. have to realize

  614. that as we penetrate darkness,

  615. as we go into places

  616. where the spiritual realm

  617. and there are serious battles there,

  618. that there's always going to be

  619. tension and fighting

  620. and struggles.

  621. If I brought the 30 people up here

  622. who were part of the launch team

  623. for Watermark,

  624. every one of them

  625. would testify

  626. to incredible amount of pressure,

  627. bad things happening in their life,

  628. things going on,

  629. like inordinate amount,

  630. dreams, sleepless nights.

  631. For a year and a half,

  632. people have been going

  633. through those things.

  634. And we've said,

  635. that's great

  636. because it means

  637. that we're doing

  638. what God wants us to do

  639. and what Satan

  640. doesn't want us to do.

  641. So as you walk forward,

  642. walk forward in confidence

  643. knowing that you're

  644. a child of God

  645. and there's nothing to fear.

  646. Now, hopefully I've covered

  647. all the categories.

  648. If there's a question there

  649. that I didn't ask,

  650. please feel free

  651. to come up and ask me later.

  652. We can address those things.

  653. But I just felt like

  654. it was a great teaching moment

  655. and we needed to talk about it

  656. and we needed to say,

  657. hey, this is what we feel

  658. like is going on.

  659. This is what God's word says.

  660. And we need to be aware of that.

  661. Is that okay?

  662. Okay.

  663. So we're looking at

  664. Galatians 5 and 6.

  665. We're bringing six years of,

  666. six Sundays,

  667. it might have seemed

  668. like six years.

  669. Six Sundays of teaching

  670. coming together

  671. and crashing at the head.

  672. And as we look at Galatians,

  673. we're reminded of a couple things.

  674. Galatians is about the gospel message.

  675. That Paul writes the gospel message

  676. in Galatians

  677. and he's telling them and us

  678. the core,

  679. the essence of the gospel.

  680. And he says,

  681. the essence of the gospel is this.

  682. The essence,

  683. the core is Jesus.

  684. Jesus saves people.

  685. Jesus rescues people.

  686. He rescues them from slavery,

  687. idols, and death.

  688. We've talked about it

  689. over and over again.

  690. Jesus jumps out of the lifeboat.

  691. He takes our dead body

  692. in the water.

  693. He pushes us into the lifeboat.

  694. And as he does that,

  695. he dies.

  696. He dies bringing us life.

  697. That's the gospel.

  698. Do I need to share it again?

  699. We're drowning.

  700. We're dead.

  701. We're in the water.

  702. We have no hope.

  703. And it's not like when Jesus jumps in

  704. and we go,

  705. okay, thanks,

  706. give me a boost.

  707. And he pushes us into the boat.

  708. No, we're dead.

  709. And he takes our body

  710. and he pushes us into the lifeboat

  711. and we come back to life.

  712. And as we come back to life,

  713. he dies.

  714. That's the gospel.

  715. Now, the church was struggling with that.

  716. The Galatians, as Christians,

  717. they came in and they were adding

  718. something to the gospel.

  719. They said,

  720. Jesus plus ceremony equals life.

  721. Or Jesus plus good works equals life.

  722. Or Jesus plus tithing to the temple

  723. equals life.

  724. And Paul says,

  725. no, Jesus plus anything equals death.

  726. Jesus plus anything equals death.

  727. The gospel is that Jesus saves us

  728. and pushes us up.

  729. And when we look at Galatians,

  730. we're reminded that Galatians

  731. is being written to Christians.

  732. And so the first thing you should realize

  733. is that even Christians

  734. need to be reminded often

  735. of the gospel.

  736. That the gospel isn't just something

  737. that gets us into heaven,

  738. out of hell.

  739. But the gospel is something

  740. that allows us to work

  741. and live every day

  742. and it changes us.

  743. Now, sometimes we just say,

  744. well, I've had the gospel,

  745. so what's next?

  746. Teach me Greek,

  747. teach me Hebrew,

  748. teach me all the points.

  749. And Jesus and Paul are saying,

  750. no, guys.

  751. The gospel is it.

  752. And the struggle,

  753. the journey that we go on in life

  754. is taking this Jesus plus nothing

  755. and applying it

  756. to every area of our life.

  757. Every area.

  758. And so Paul is speaking

  759. to the church of Galatians

  760. and he's saying,

  761. when the gospel comes in,

  762. it changes us,

  763. it transforms us,

  764. and we gotta help each other.

  765. We gotta help each other understand that.

  766. We gotta help each other focus on that.

  767. And we can't lose that point.

  768. Last week, Paul talked about that.

  769. My wife and Carolyn so

  770. always accuse me of making up words

  771. as I preach.

  772. So I've heard that there's this list

  773. of words, Tobinisms,

  774. that Tobin has made.

  775. But if I could make up one word,

  776. I would say the word is gospeling.

  777. Gospeling.

  778. Paul says that every day

  779. we have to be gospeling

  780. the gospel to each other.

  781. We gotta be speaking it to each other.

  782. When we're down

  783. and we're upset

  784. or something's happened,

  785. we share about what Christ has done.

  786. When things are going really good

  787. and we're on top of the world,

  788. we share about what Christ has done.

  789. And we need each other

  790. gospeling each other

  791. so that we understand that.

  792. And last week,

  793. as we got to this passage,

  794. Paul says that when

  795. the gospel comes into you,

  796. it changes you.

  797. And it makes you loving

  798. and joyful and peaceful

  799. and patient

  800. and kindness

  801. and gentleness

  802. and self-control.

  803. And he says,

  804. these aren't just mystical things.

  805. But these are concrete things.

  806. You don't say,

  807. I feel more loving today.

  808. But what Paul is saying

  809. to the church is,

  810. look at your actions

  811. and look at your deeds.

  812. Are they more loving?

  813. If you're married in here,

  814. all I need to do

  815. is go to your spouse

  816. and ask them,

  817. how are they doing?

  818. Are they more gentle to you today

  819. than they were last week?

  820. Are they more kinder to you today

  821. than they were last year?

  822. And Paul says in the Galatians

  823. that the answer to that

  824. would be yes

  825. because as we live out the Spirit,

  826. all these things are concrete.

  827. And what he's going to share

  828. in this passage

  829. is basically,

  830. as we walk with God,

  831. we're going to see

  832. three relationships

  833. very differently.

  834. We're going to see

  835. our relationship with God

  836. very differently.

  837. We're going to see

  838. our relationship

  839. with each other

  840. very differently.

  841. And we're going to see

  842. our relationship with money

  843. very differently.

  844. As we walk with God,

  845. the Spirit comes into us,

  846. the Spirit indwells us,

  847. we walk in the power

  848. of the Holy Spirit,

  849. we comprehend

  850. and we understand the gospel,

  851. it changes us,

  852. and as it changes us,

  853. our relationships

  854. with each other,

  855. with God,

  856. and with money

  857. and material things

  858. are going to be

  859. radically different.

  860. And that's what he's

  861. sharing to the church.

  862. He's saying,

  863. this is how you know

  864. you're walking with me

  865. because these things

  866. are different.

  867. And so in verses 25,

  868. 26, 3, and 4,

  869. he says that as you walk

  870. with me,

  871. the gospel changes

  872. the way you look at God.

  873. I mean,

  874. if I live by the Spirit,

  875. I see myself differently.

  876. If we live by the Spirit,

  877. let us walk by the Spirit.

  878. Let us not become boastful,

  879. challenging one another,

  880. envying one another.

  881. Verse 3,

  882. for if anyone thinks

  883. he is something

  884. when he is nothing,

  885. and in Greek,

  886. the word means nothing.

  887. If anyone thinks

  888. he is something

  889. when he is nothing,

  890. he deceives himself.

  891. But each one must examine

  892. his own work

  893. and when he will have

  894. reason for boasting

  895. in regard to himself alone

  896. and not in regard

  897. to each other.

  898. And what Paul says here

  899. is that the minute

  900. we forget the gospel

  901. in our life,

  902. we become boastful

  903. and we become envying.

  904. And we look at people

  905. around us and we go,

  906. oh, I wish I had those things.

  907. I wish I could do those things.

  908. I wish I had that name card.

  909. And he would say,

  910. you've lost the gospel.

  911. But when the gospel comes in,

  912. as we see in this church

  913. and in our lives,

  914. it creates a new image in us.

  915. It creates us a new self-image.

  916. It creates this new relationship

  917. that we have with God

  918. that I probably should say

  919. that it restores

  920. the original relationship.

  921. Before we found our self-worth

  922. in what people thought about us.

  923. Before we found our self-worth

  924. and what people said about us.

  925. Before we found our self-worth

  926. and how people interacted with us

  927. and what they did with us

  928. and our accomplishments

  929. and what Paul says

  930. in his passages,

  931. if you do that still,

  932. you're adding something

  933. to the gospel.

  934. And you're trying to work

  935. for your salvation.

  936. Don't do that.

  937. Because when the gospel comes in,

  938. you see things differently.

  939. You see God differently.

  940. And what he says is

  941. the gospel creates

  942. a new image in us.

  943. And it's not only a new image,

  944. but it changes how we evaluate

  945. how we're doing.

  946. So as Christians,

  947. we no longer look at Mark

  948. or Kyle or David

  949. and we compare ourselves

  950. to what they're doing

  951. and how we think of ourselves.

  952. But it says we compare ourselves

  953. to God.

  954. How would you like to do that?

  955. We compare ourselves to God

  956. in the standard he's put up there.

  957. And in verse three,

  958. he says,

  959. when we do that,

  960. we're nothing.

  961. Nothing.

  962. Nothing.

  963. I mean,

  964. that's kind of encouraging,

  965. isn't it?

  966. I'm nothing.

  967. But there's a counterbalance

  968. to that in the gospel.

  969. And what he says is

  970. as we understand

  971. that we're nothing

  972. and we come to Christ

  973. and we submit our lives

  974. to Christ,

  975. we become everything.

  976. That the moment we realize

  977. that we're nothing,

  978. that we've been trying

  979. to work in our own way,

  980. we've been trying

  981. to earn our salvation,

  982. the minute we say,

  983. God,

  984. please forgive me

  985. for doing that.

  986. I cannot do that.

  987. Only your son can do that.

  988. And the minute we submit

  989. our lives to Christ,

  990. Christ comes in

  991. and he takes

  992. all of his righteousness,

  993. all of the things he did,

  994. he takes all of those things

  995. on the cross

  996. and he puts them

  997. right on top of you.

  998. And so now,

  999. you're not only nothing,

  1000. but you're everything.

  1001. Does that make sense?

  1002. So it's the reason

  1003. Paul could say,

  1004. I am the least

  1005. of these servants.

1006. I'm the chief of sinners.

  1007. I'm the worst disciple.

1008. But in the same sentence,

  1009. he could say,

  1010. follow me

1011. as I walk with God.

  1012. He could say,

  1013. I'm terrible.

  1014. I'm having a hard time.

1015. I'm nothing compared to God.

1016. But look at my life

1017. and emulate what I do

1018. as I walk with God.

1019. And what Paul is telling them

  1020. and he's telling us

1021. is that as we walk with God,

  1022. the gospel comes in

1023. and it changes our identity.

1024. It changes who we are.

1025. It changes how we come

  1026. about that identity.

1027. And we no longer look

  1028. at people or circumstances

  1029. or things around us,

1030. but we look at Jesus Christ.

  1031. And the Bible says

  1032. that he's done everything.

1033. You guys are really quiet.

1034. So the way this works out

  1035. in our world

1036. maybe is something like this.

  1037. The gospel humbles us

1038. and it makes us nothing,

  1039. but it strengthens us

1040. by saying that the only person

  1041. who really matters

1042. what they think about us,

  1043. God,

1044. when God looks at us,

  1045. he goes,

  1046. amazing.

  1047. Amazing.

1048. So I go into work

1049. and I walk into Citibank.

  1050. I'll pick on Christine.

  1051. Someone hands me

  1052. their business card

1053. and I look at it

1054. and I see all these

  1055. global manager,

  1056. da-da-da-da-da-da-da,

1057. all these incredible titles there.

  1058. Maybe I go,

  1059. wow,

1060. I need to work harder.

1061. I need to be where she is.

1062. I need to get all those titles

  1063. behind my name.

  1064. Man,

  1065. I really envy her.

  1066. And as a Christian,

1067. the minute I do that,

  1068. I de-gospel myself.

1069. I don't know if that makes sense.

  1070. I mean,

1071. I still have my salvation,

1072. but I'm like this train.

1073. I'm hooked to the engine.

1074. And the minute I say,

  1075. man,

  1076. I wish I could do that,

  1077. boop!

1078. And I've lost the power

  1079. of the Holy Spirit.

  1080. I've lost the power

  1081. of the gospel.

  1082. I mean,

  1083. I've de-gospeled myself.

1084. And so I need people around me

1085. to come alongside of me

  1086. and say,

  1087. dude,

1088. you've got to come back

1089. to what Christ says about you

  1090. is true

1091. and don't get down on that

  1092. because you're a child of God.

1093. Or maybe I look at my name tag

1094. and I pass it to somebody

  1095. and I'm like a billion titles

1096. and I pass it to Christine now

1097. and I look at it and go,

  1098. hey,

  1099. deal with that.

  1100. Well,

  1101. I brought in pride,

  1102. right?

  1103. Verse 26,

  1104. first one was envy,

  1105. now it's pride.

1106. And the minute I get proudful,

  1107. I de-gospel myself.

1108. And someone needs to come

  1109. alongside me and say,

  1110. dude,

  1111. you're getting really prideful

  1112. about that,

1113. but that's not who you are.

1114. When you pull out that name tag,

  1115. the only title

  1116. that really means anything

  1117. in God's world

1118. is a child of God.

  1119. Tobin,

  1120. a child of God.

  1121. John,

  1122. a child of God.

  1123. Christine,

  1124. a child of God.

  1125. That's the only title

  1126. that means anything.

1127. And if we rely on

  1128. any other title,

  1129. we de-gospel ourself

1130. and I'm going to get in trouble

  1131. when I say it,

  1132. but we just,

  1133. we de-gospel ourself.

  1134. You come home today

1135. and your kids get this letter

  1136. and Harvard University says,

1137. we think your kids are amazing

1138. and we're going to give up

  1139. half of our endowment

1140. to get them into our school.

  1141. Incredible.

  1142. And you're like,

1143. but my kids are only eight years old.

  1144. Who cares?

  1145. We want them.

  1146. You've done such a great job

  1147. in educating your kids.

1148. You should be really proud

  1149. of yourself.

1150. But the minute you do that,

  1151. what happens?

  1152. You've taken your thoughts

1153. and ideas off of Christ

  1154. and say,

1155. this is who defines me.

1156. This is what I look at.

1157. This is who I am.

1158. And we put it on our kids' education.

1159. There are a lot of us in here

  1160. who are de-gospeling ourselves

1161. on our kids' education, guys.

1162. But that doesn't define us.

1163. And in the same way,

1164. you might have one of my kids

1165. and they're getting rejection letters,

  1166. you know,

1167. hey, we know your kid's eight years old,

1168. but don't even think about it.

  1169. Maybe a football scholarship,

  1170. but that's about it.

1171. And I get all sad and depressed

  1172. and I walk around

1173. and I just feel terrible.

  1174. What a terrible parent I am.

1175. My kid didn't get into Harvard

1176. and they should have got in by now

  1177. because they're almost nine.

1178. But the minute I do that,

  1179. I de-gospel myself.

1180. And I take my focus off of Jesus

1181. and I put my focus on my kids

  1182. and the education.

  1183. And all these things

1184. that the world says is important.

1185. The question we have to ask ourselves

1186. is what are we de-gospeling ourselves with?

1187. What is it that draws our attention away from Jesus

1188. and says that's more important?

1189. Paul goes on and he says,

1190. if you're walking in the Spirit

1191. and God's power is in you

1192. and the Holy Spirit is with you

1193. and you understand what's going on,

1194. that's gonna change how you see relationships

  1195. with other people.

  1196. Verses one and two,

  1197. he says that,

  1198. he says,

  1199. brethren,

1200. if anyone is caught in a trespass,

  1201. you who are spiritual,

1202. which means you're walking with God,

1203. not that you're incredibly mature,

1204. but you're walking with God,

  1205. restore,

  1206. it's a Greek word,

1207. it means to set a bone.

1208. You have a dislocated ankle

  1209. or arm

  1210. or a broken bone.

  1211. He says,

  1212. restore them,

  1213. bring them back together.

1214. And as you do that,

  1215. be careful,

  1216. be gentle,

  1217. look to yourself

1218. because you might be tempted one day

1219. and do the same thing.

1220. We can go on and on about this passage,

  1221. but he's saying

1222. that as we understand the gospel

1223. and as we walk with God,

  1224. it changes the way

  1225. we look at relationships.

1226. And when we see people sinning,

1227. we don't just look at them

  1228. and go,

1229. I knew they would do that.

  1230. I mean,

1231. they talk about those things

  1232. all the time,

1233. but I knew they were gonna,

1234. I knew they were fake.

1235. And the minute you do that,

  1236. you've de-gospeled yourself

1237. and instead of focusing on Jesus,

1238. you're focusing on that person

  1239. and their failure.

  1240. And Paul says,

  1241. no,

  1242. the way we change

1243. when we walk with God

1244. is we look at people

  1245. and they're failing

1246. and we come alongside of them

  1247. and say,

  1248. dude,

1249. do you know what you're doing?

  1250. Stop doing that.

  1251. You're sacrificing your family

  1252. for your job.

  1253. I mean,

1254. you say it's all about yourself,

  1255. but you're really,

  1256. it's really not

1257. because it's about your ego.

  1258. You're de-gospeling yourself.

1259. But you do it gently.

  1260. It doesn't say

  1261. go to non-believers

  1262. and say,

  1263. you're going to hell.

  1264. That's probably not

  1265. the best way

  1266. to talk to people

  1267. who don't know Christ.

  1268. But he's talking about

1269. people in the family of God

  1270. and when you're in

  1271. the family of God

  1272. like this,

1273. you come alongside each other,

  1274. you encourage each other,

1275. you gently restore each other.

1276. He goes on and he says,

1277. if you're in the family of God,

  1278. another thing that changes

  1279. your relationship

  1280. is that you bear

  1281. each other's burdens.

  1282. And the word here,

  1283. and the word picture

  1284. is very powerful,

  1285. it's very unique,

  1286. and it basically means

  1287. you come alongside

  1288. of that person,

  1289. they have this borrows,

1290. they have this huge burden

1291. on them that's killing them.

  1292. It might be economic,

  1293. it might be social,

  1294. it might be sin,

  1295. it might be something

1296. going on in their family,

1297. it could be health issues,

1298. it could be a million things.

  1299. But he says,

  1300. to have compassion,

  1301. to help them,

  1302. to de-burden them,

  1303. you have to come

  1304. right beside them.

1305. And you have to get

  1306. underneath that load.

1307. And you have to know

  1308. what's going on

  1309. in their life.

  1310. And sometimes,

  1311. I confess as Christians,

  1312. we just,

  1313. I don't do that, right?

  1314. I say,

1315. I'll pray for you, dude.

  1316. But I don't take the time

1317. to get into their world

  1318. and understand

  1319. what's happening

  1320. in their life.

  1321. And Paul says,

1322. we have to do that,

  1323. we do that.

  1324. That's the action

  1325. of us becoming Christians.

  1326. Because that's what

  1327. Christians do.

  1328. Christians come alongside

  1329. each other

1330. and they help each other

1331. and they pick each other up.

  1332. And be careful

  1333. when you do that

  1334. and be gentle

  1335. when you do that.

1336. But you need to do that.

1337. And if you don't do that,

  1338. you de-gospel yourself

1339. and you start looking at them

1340. and you don't look at Jesus.

  1341. But he's saying,

  1342. we're a family,

  1343. we do it together,

  1344. we need each other,

1345. we gotta help each other.

  1346. And Paul says,

  1347. if you're walking

  1348. in this,

  1349. community is messy.

  1350. I mean,

  1351. community is hard,

  1352. it's difficult,

  1353. it's messy.

  1354. When we said

  1355. Watermark Community Church,

  1356. we realized

  1357. everyone needs community,

1358. everyone needs to be known,

  1359. but people don't embrace

  1360. it very well

  1361. because it's messy

  1362. and it's difficult

  1363. and it's hard.

  1364. But Paul says,

  1365. if you're walking

  1366. in the Spirit,

  1367. if you're a child of God,

  1368. if you're mine,

  1369. then you are going

  1370. to be a part

  1371. of a community

  1372. and you're gonna come

  1373. alongside people,

  1374. you're gonna help them

  1375. when they sin,

  1376. you're gonna help them

  1377. when they're under burdens

  1378. and you're gonna carry

  1379. those things for them.

  1380. In fact,

  1381. he said there's only

  1382. one burden

  1383. you can't carry

  1384. and that burden

  1385. is your salvation.

  1386. your salvation

  1387. because Jesus carried it

1388. for you at the cross

  1389. but everything else

  1390. you can't

  1391. because I've already

  1392. carried everything

  1393. and because I did,

  1394. you can.

  1395. Christ was crushed

  1396. carrying our burdens

  1397. so that we can

  1398. help each other.

  1399. The minute we forget

  1400. about that,

  1401. Paul says,

  1402. you've allowed

  1403. the Judaizers

  1404. to come in

  1405. and the Judaizers

  1406. come in

  1407. and they say,

  1408. you're a sinful person,

  1409. bad,

  1410. get out of here.

  1411. You're a broken person,

1412. you have this burden here,

1413. let me give you more.

  1414. Tithe more,

  1415. read your Bible more,

  1416. do these things more.

  1417. And you say,

1418. are you gonna do that?

1419. No, I'm not doing it

1420. but I'm giving you to do it.

  1421. Paul says,

  1422. no.

  1423. The gospel brings freedom

  1424. and it brings change

  1425. in our lives.

  1426. Finally,

1427. Paul says in this passage

  1428. five through ten

  1429. and we're just flying

  1430. through this guys

1431. because I wanna come back

1432. to this at a later date

  1433. because I don't wanna keep you

  1434. past two o'clock.

  1435. Paul says

1436. if you understand the gospel

1437. and if the fruit of the spirit

1438. is living out in your life

1439. and if the Holy Spirit

  1440. is changing you

1441. and if you're walking with him

1442. then you're gonna view money

  1443. very differently.

  1444. Five through ten,

1445. he says you're gonna view money

  1446. and there's nothing

  1447. that talks about a person's heart

  1448. more and quicker

1449. than their view of money.

  1450. Jesus talked about it

1451. 45% of the time he preached.

  1452. And for some reason

  1453. as pastors

  1454. and as churches

  1455. we are really afraid

  1456. to talk about it

  1457. and I think that's just

  1458. really terrible

1459. because it puts these burdens

  1460. on people

1461. and we don't ever discuss it

  1462. in church

  1463. but Jesus says

  1464. and Paul says

  1465. that when you become

  1466. a Christian

  1467. you look at money

  1468. differently.

1469. He says in his passage

  1470. that you're generous

  1471. that you sow money

  1472. and it means

  1473. this idea

1474. is throwing it out there.

  1475. You throw your money

  1476. to your teachers.

  1477. You throw your money

  1478. to the church.

  1479. You throw your money

  1480. to spiritual things.

  1481. You throw your money

  1482. to those in need.

1483. You think of your relationship

  1484. with money differently

1485. because God has given you

  1486. everything

  1487. and you realize

  1488. it's his

  1489. and he wants you

1490. to be a good steward

  1491. of that.

1492. And so as we walk

  1493. with God

  1494. one of the ways

  1495. we know that we're

  1496. walking with him

  1497. and he's changing us

1498. is we think of money

  1499. differently.

1500. We use it as a tool

  1501. to increase his kingdom.

  1502. He gives us

  1503. two warnings there

  1504. two very powerful warnings.

  1505. The first warning is

1506. you reap what you sow.

1507. He says every one of us

  1508. is planting seeds

  1509. with our money

  1510. and with our time

  1511. and with our gifting.

  1512. Every one of us

  1513. are planting seeds

  1514. and he's saying

  1515. be careful

  1516. what kind of seeds

  1517. you're planting

  1518. because if you're planting

  1519. a fleshly seed

  1520. it's going to reap

  1521. to your flesh.

  1522. Plant spiritual seeds.

1523. He gives a second warning.

  1524. The second warning

  1525. basically is this.

  1526. Sometimes planting

  1527. spiritual seeds

  1528. takes a long time.

  1529. Sometimes you plant

  1530. a church

  1531. and you don't see

  1532. hardly anything

  1533. going on there

  1534. and you keep

  1535. preaching the gospel

  1536. and you keep

  1537. preaching the gospel

  1538. and you keep

  1539. loving people

  1540. and you keep

  1541. sharing with people

  1542. and you don't see

  1543. any change at all

  1544. in people's lives.

  1545. You don't see people

  1546. coming.

  1547. You don't see growth.

  1548. You don't see all

  1549. these things that you

  1550. think maybe they

  1551. should happen

  1552. and Paul says

  1553. be careful

  1554. and be gentle

  1555. and be patient

  1556. because if you plant

  1557. my word

  1558. if you plant

  1559. the money

  1560. if you plant

  1561. the seed

  1562. I promise you

  1563. that it will grow.

  1564. you can trust me

1565. because I'm in on this.

  1566. Don't get discouraged

  1567. when things don't happen

1568. the way that you think

  1569. they're going to happen

  1570. because he says

  1571. the harvest is sure

  1572. and it will happen

  1573. and God's timing

  1574. is perfect.

  1575. Paul

  1576. he's encouraging

  1577. all of us

  1578. he's encouraging

  1579. all of us

  1580. he's saying

  1581. just because you're

  1582. free of the law

  1583. just because

  1584. you walk in grace

  1585. it doesn't mean

  1586. you don't have

  1587. responsibility.

  1588. you have a responsibility

  1589. to the people

  1590. around you.

  1591. You have a responsibility

  1592. to love

  1593. to be patient

  1594. to be joyful

  1595. to be in community

1596. to use your money wisely

1597. for the kingdom of God

  1598. to care for people

  1599. that are struggling

  1600. don't think

  1601. just because I'm free

  1602. I'm free

  1603. I'm free

  1604. I can do anything

  1605. no Paul says no

  1606. your freedom

  1607. has this amazing

  1608. responsibility

  1609. that I've given you

1610. and you need to look

  1611. at these things differently

  1612. because if you don't

  1613. then maybe God's spirit

  1614. isn't inside of you

  1615. and I don't want you

  1616. to fool yourselves

  1617. in the thinking

1618. that you're in the family

  1619. of God

  1620. but the fruit

  1621. that you're producing

  1622. is not love

  1623. joy

  1624. peace

  1625. patience

  1626. kindness

  1627. gentleness

  1628. self-control

1629. where do we go from here

  1630. so what now

  1631. maybe this week

  1632. we should ask ourselves

  1633. some questions

1634. maybe we should ask ourselves

  1635. the question

  1636. where do I find my self-worth

1637. do I find it in how people

  1638. think of me

1639. and what they say about me

1640. do I find it in my bank account

1641. do I find it in the watch I wear

1642. or the car I drive

  1643. or my family

  1644. and the kids

  1645. and the schools

  1646. my family gets into

1647. is that where I find my self-worth

1648. Paul says the minute you do that

  1649. you've de-gospeled yourself

1650. and you've missed the power

  1651. of God's word

  1652. what would you do

  1653. this week

1654. if you came into your office

  1655. and you were fired

1656. in the most embarrassing way possible

1657. they stopped you at the door

  1658. took your phone

  1659. and just smashed it

1660. took out your credit cards

  1661. and your access cards

1662. just cut them in half

1663. so get out of here

  1664. how would you react

  1665. how you react

1666. shares where your heart is

1667. and what you're holding on to

  1668. besides the gospel

  1669. now I'm sure

1670. it's good to be disappointed

1671. because that would be terrible

1672. but that's not my identity

1673. if one day I were up here

1674. and I could no longer preach

1675. that wouldn't be my identity

1676. or I could no longer speak

1677. or I could no longer do something

1678. that's not who I am in Christ

  1679. and in Christ

1680. I'm evaluated truly and fully

1681. and that's the only person

  1682. that's important for me

  1683. to be evaluated by

  1684. how do I react

1685. when I see my brother in sin

  1686. when you see someone

  1687. in blatant sin

1688. they're cheating on their books

  1689. they're doing something unethical

  1690. they're a Christian

  1691. and you know

1692. dude this is going to destroy

  1693. your company

  1694. it's going to destroy

1695. what people think of you

  1696. it's going to destroy

  1697. your reputation

  1698. what do you do

1699. do you just look at them

  1700. and kind of wink

  1701. and walk away

  1702. because you're afraid

1703. one day it might happen to you

1704. or do you come alongside them

1705. and say dude this is not good

1706. and not only are you hurting

  1707. your reputation

  1708. and your company's reputation

  1709. but you're hurting

  1710. Jesus' reputation

  1711. how do you react

  1712. when people

1713. are in sin around you

  1714. my experience is

  1715. most of the time

  1716. in the church

  1717. we ignore it

  1718. and we just think

  1719. it will go away

  1720. how do I react

  1721. when a needy person

  1722. is coming walking

  1723. towards me

  1724. you're walking down

  1725. the street

  1726. and this guy

  1727. you know

  1728. he's emotional

1729. he has a lot of baggage

1730. he's just going to talk

  1731. for 25-30 minutes

  1732. about himself

  1733. and your first response

1734. is just to run away

  1735. how do you react

  1736. how do you react

1737. when you get that phone call

  1738. and you know

  1739. someone needs money

  1740. and you know

  1741. exactly that's what

1742. they're going to ask you for

  1743. and they're a brother in Christ

  1744. what do you do

1745. Paul says to the church

  1746. of Galatians

  1747. that as we walk

  1748. with him

  1749. we change

  1750. and we look at

  1751. all these relationships

  1752. differently

  1753. love

  1754. joy

  1755. peace

  1756. patience

  1757. kindness

  1758. maybe we should ask

  1759. the question

1760. when was the last time

  1761. I gave away money

1762. that I was going to use

  1763. to buy something cool

  1764. or a trip

1765. when was the last time

  1766. I gave it away

  1767. to the church

  1768. or a worthy cause

  1769. or a needy person

  1770. because Paul says

  1771. into the church

  1772. that if we're walking

  1773. with him

  1774. and the fruit

  1775. is being manifested

  1776. in our life

1777. we're going to be free

  1778. and generous

  1779. with our money

  1780. and we're going to

  1781. give those things away

  1782. and we're going to

  1783. help people in need

  1784. and we're going to

  1785. even sacrifice

  1786. and the scary thing

  1787. about serving

  1788. and coming underneath

  1789. people

  1790. that's humiliating

  1791. sometimes

  1792. and it's scary

  1793. and it's unknown

  1794. and Paul says

  1795. well how are you

  1796. going to do that

  1797. and what are you

  1798. going to do

  1799. with your money

  1800. what kind of seeds

  1801. are we planting

  1802. in our life

  1803. right now

  1804. as I pray

  1805. through this sermon

  1806. I realize

  1807. there's two different

  1808. types of people

  1809. in this church

  1810. right now

  1811. there's some people

1812. who are on this journey

  1813. and they're just

  1814. kind of asking questions

  1815. they're not followers

  1816. of Christ yet

  1817. somebody's brought you here

  1818. maybe your wife

  1819. has dragged you here

  1820. or your kids

  1821. have dragged you here

  1822. and my prayer

  1823. for you guys

  1824. is that you would

  1825. realize that

  1826. there's a God

  1827. who is crazy

  1828. about you

  1829. he sacrificed

  1830. everything

  1831. to bring you

  1832. into the family

1833. that he's the only way

  1834. that you're going to

  1835. find self worth

  1836. and satisfaction

  1837. in your life

  1838. and you're going to

  1839. try and your money

  1840. and your finances

  1841. and your titles

  1842. and your family

  1843. and all those things

1844. you're going to look for

  1845. but the scripture says

  1846. that all those things

  1847. will eventually fail you

1848. and my prayer for you

  1849. is that you would

  1850. realize that

  1851. that you would

  1852. come to Christ

  1853. that you would

  1854. come ask us questions

  1855. ask the people

  1856. who brought you questions

  1857. engage in those things

  1858. and realize that

  1859. the only relationship

  1860. worthy of anything

  1861. is a relationship

  1862. with God

1863. but he's the only one

  1864. you can be truly

  1865. measured by

  1866. and if you measure

  1867. yourself by anything

  1868. else you're going to

  1869. fail

  1870. and it's going to

  1871. disappoint you

  1872. and it cannot

  1873. sustain the weight

  1874. of your soul

  1875. it cannot sustain

  1876. the weight

  1877. of your soul

  1878. and I realize

  1879. that there's some

  1880. of us in here

  1881. we're Christ followers

  1882. and we're walking

  1883. with God

  1884. and for me

  1885. I just want us

  1886. to realize

  1887. as we leave here

  1888. that the gospel

1889. is as deep as it gets

  1890. it's not learning

  1891. Greek or Hebrew

  1892. or how to construct

  1893. all these things

  1894. but it's taking

  1895. that gospel message

1896. putting it into my life

  1897. and allowing it

  1898. to live through me

  1899. every day

  1900. that when I go

  1901. into hard situations

  1902. I go patience

  1903. Lord Jesus

  1904. I need you

  1905. when I walk around

  1906. people that are

  1907. unloving

  1908. or unlovable

  1909. or hard to love

  1910. I go Lord Jesus

  1911. I need you

1912. help me love this person

  1913. when I'm seeing

  1914. a need financially

  1915. but I'm looking

  1916. at my pocket

  1917. and say well

1918. if I really do this

1919. it might put me tight

1920. I might not be able

1921. to go buy that Rolex

  1922. I want to buy

  1923. I just don't know

1924. if I should do that

  1925. Lord Jesus

  1926. this is your money

1927. what do you want me

  1928. to do with it

  1929. my prayer

  1930. as a church

1931. as we go on this journey

  1932. is that we would

  1933. take the gospel

  1934. and we would

  1935. push it

  1936. deep into the foundation

  1937. of our life

  1938. and on the road

  1939. that we walk on

  1940. and every day

  1941. we walk

  1942. we gospelize

  1943. each other

  1944. and talk about

  1945. how amazing God is

1946. and how great he is

  1947. and the minute

  1948. we see somebody

  1949. de-gospelize

  1950. as a de-couple

  1951. we say

  1952. hey remember

  1953. what Christ

  1954. has done for you

  1955. he loves you

  1956. don't evaluate yourself

  1957. over your job

  1958. or your title

1959. or even how your marriage

  1960. or your kids

  1961. are doing

  1962. because the only person

  1963. that really matters

  1964. is Jesus

  1965. and he loves you

  1966. and he's given

  1967. everything for you

  1968. he's taken you

  1969. out of the water

1970. pushed you in a boat

  1971. and he died

  1972. doing it

  1973. and that's how

  1974. Paul ends Galatians

  1975. as we're on a journey

  1976. we walk

  1977. and it's not just

1978. this thing we write down

  1979. love, joy, peace

  1980. but it's something

  1981. that's lived out

  1982. every moment

  1983. of our life

  1984. and we change

  1985. we do that

  1986. in community

  1987. Father we thank you

  1988. for this day

  1989. we thank you

  1990. for your goodness

  1991. I just thank you

  1992. for my brothers

  1993. and sisters here

  1994. I thank you

  1995. for the power

  1996. of your spirit

  1997. that changes us

  1998. I thank you

  1999. that we don't fear

  2000. in the spiritual battle

  2001. that we don't need

  2002. to worry about

  2003. what's going to happen

  2004. next

  2005. because we know

  2006. that you hold

  2007. all those things

  2008. you hold next

  2009. in your hand

2010. and so we can trust you

2011. and so we come before you

2012. as a church in Galatia did

  2013. and we confess

2014. that we try to add

  2015. things to your son

  2016. we try to add

  2017. businesses

  2018. in power

  2019. in titles

  2020. in acceptance

  2021. in articles

  2022. in whatever

  2023. and Father

  2024. we just confess

  2025. and we repent

  2026. and we realize

  2027. that we've de-gospeled

  2028. ourself

  2029. and we've lost

  2030. the power

  2031. of your spirit

  2032. living through us

  2033. and changing us

  2034. so Lord

2035. we just come to you

  2036. as a church

  2037. and we just pray

  2038. that your spirit

  2039. would fall heavily

  2040. upon us

2041. that you would change us

  2042. that we would see

  2043. things differently

2044. we would not see things

2045. the same way we did

2046. when we came in here

2047. but we'd see your love

  2048. and your power

2049. and your desire for us

  2050. in so many greater

  2051. and different ways

  2052. Father I pray

  2053. that we would see

2054. the person right next to us

2055. as a person on that same journey

2056. who needs to be gospelized

2057. every moment of the day

  2058. that we can

  2059. to encourage them

  2060. and to point them

  2061. to your son

  2062. who's done so much

  2063. to bring us here

  2064. so Lord

  2065. we just

2066. we just give you all

2067. we ask you to come in

  2068. and fill those spaces

  2069. that we've torn out

  2070. and passed to you

  2071. and to change us

  2072. we love you

  2073. and we need you

  2074. we pray these things

  2075. in your son

  2076. Jesus name

  2077. amen

  2078. amen

  2079. can you be seated

  2080. just for one minute

2081. one of the amazing things

2082. about being in Hong Kong

2083. is you get to meet

  2084. people from everywhere

  2085. which is incredible

  2086. they come in

  2087. from different countries

  2088. and cultures

  2089. and even Australia

  2090. and it's fun

2091. to meet people like that

2092. and yeah I hear you

  2093. and so

2094. but then the sad thing

  2095. about it is

  2096. people leave right

  2097. so people head out

  2098. and so

2099. I'm going to embarrass somebody

  2100. but I just think

  2101. they're the bomb

2102. and so I want to ask

  2103. Carolyn So

2104. if you come up here

  2105. for a second

  2106. Carolyn

  2107. you don't know

2108. if you don't know her

  2109. Carolyn I've known

  2110. since we've been here

  2111. and Carolyn has been

  2112. a community group leader

  2113. a care group leader

  2114. at Island

  2115. and at Watermark

  2116. forever

  2117. and I mean

  2118. it seems like

  2119. and I remember

2120. she's one of the first

  2121. persons I met

  2122. we talked about

  2123. community groups

  2124. and care groups

  2125. and just her passion

  2126. for discipling people

  2127. and bringing God's word

  2128. and it's funny

  2129. because she's

  2130. she's stubborn

  2131. and she's spunky

2132. and we get in these discussions

  2133. and she's like

2134. well I don't want to do that

2135. but if you're going to do it

2136. tell me to do it

  2137. I'll do it

  2138. I'm like

2139. okay you need to do it

2140. which I love about her

  2141. but she's

  2142. she's without

  2143. exception

  2144. never complained

  2145. there were times

  2146. we got together

  2147. and she would pray

  2148. and she goes

2149. God where are the men

  2150. in my group

2151. because there's just no men

  2152. who are stepping up

  2153. to lead my group

  2154. and years

2155. we prayed for male leadership

2156. to come alongside of her

2157. and she just stayed in there

  2158. faithfully serving

  2159. and I just thought

  2160. she's the bomb

  2161. and so

2162. this is her last Sunday

  2163. right

2164. and so she's moving to Shanghai

  2165. to work

  2166. and I just wanted

  2167. this is what community

  2168. is all about

  2169. and so

2170. I feel like in some ways

  2171. we're commissioning her

  2172. to go up there

  2173. and be stubborn

  2174. and lead small groups

2175. wherever God has put her

  2176. and share the gospel

  2177. with people

  2178. and the neat thing

2179. is that as she leaves

  2180. God has raised up

  2181. three guys

  2182. to lead her group

  2183. and so

  2184. which I thought

  2185. was amazing

  2186. so

  2187. it's a huge answer prayer

  2188. right

  2189. I feel like

  2190. I was like

  2191. dude

  2192. it's like

  2193. so

  2194. and so your group

  2195. is being left

  2196. in capable hands

  2197. probably not as capable

  2198. as yours

  2199. but

  2200. so I'm gonna

  2201. I'm just gonna pray

  2202. for you

  2203. and

  2204. when do you

  2205. actually fly out

  2206. next Saturday

  2207. next Saturday

  2208. okay

  2209. and so

  2210. are you gonna still

2211. work with Disney up there

  2212. okay

  2213. spreading the magic

  2214. with Uncle Walt

  2215. and all the actors

  2216. everybody's an actor

  2217. right

  2218. everybody's a cast

  2219. and so

  2220. let's pray for

  2221. Father

  2222. I just thank you

2223. for my dear sister Carolyn

2224. I just pray for her

2225. I pray for her heart

  2226. I pray for community

2227. I pray just for her faithfulness

  2228. I thank you

  2229. and we rejoice

  2230. in just

  2231. how amazingly

  2232. you've made her

  2233. and brought her together

  2234. and just her passion

  2235. to glorify you

  2236. and so we pray

  2237. Lord as she goes

2238. that you would be with her

2239. that you'd go before her

  2240. that you'd bring brothers

  2241. and sisters around her

  2242. to encourage her

  2243. and to gospelize her

  2244. every day

  2245. with just

  2246. the amazing message

  2247. of your son

2248. and so we love her

  2249. and

  2250. what a blessing

  2251. she is to us

  2252. and we pray

  2253. that she would be

  2254. a massive blessing

  2255. to the next people

  2256. in that church

2257. and so we send her out

  2258. in your power

  2259. and your spirit

  2260. and we love you

  2261. Amen

  2262. Thank you

  2263. Thank you

  2264. Okay

  2265. Did I mention this?

  2266. I didn't mention this

  2267. Next week

  2268. we're not here

  2269. If you come here

2270. there'll be a bunch of lawyers here

  2271. and you'll be bored

  2272. Okay

  2273. So

2274. you don't want to be here

  2275. Next week

  2276. we're at ISF

2277. We're there for the next two Sundays

  2278. So

2279. Cyberport has kicked us out

  2280. So there's

  2281. directions in your bulletin

2282. It's only like two minute walk

  2283. from here

  2284. So don't come here

  2285. If you know someone

  2286. who's in the church

2287. but they're not here today

  2288. remind them

  2289. We'll be at ISF

2290. for the next two Sundays

2291. We need you to be there

  2292. and

2293. to be a part of that

  2294. Also

  2295. we're not passing around

  2296. offerings

  2297. So as you respond

  2298. to what God's done

  2299. in your life

  2300. take one of these

  2301. blue purple envelopes

  2302. and just

  2303. it's God's money

  2304. Give back to Him

  2305. and what you give

2306. we'll use to reach people

  2307. and to reach people

  2308. Also

2309. my wife's going to come up

  2310. One of the dreams

2311. we had at the church

2312. is when we came in

  2313. that we were praying

2314. that people would come in

  2315. as consultants

2316. and help us in the journey

  2317. and

2318. because we need a lot of help

  2319. and so Mark

  2320. and Carrie Tedder

  2321. have been

  2322. consultants with us

  2323. and equipping

  2324. and we spent yesterday

  2325. on a junk trip

2326. not that you can see

  2327. my face burned

  2328. and all that stuff

  2329. and

2330. so this is their last Sunday

  2331. so there's

  2332. some of their CDs

2333. are still available out there

  2334. on the table

2335. you can grab one up

  2336. we have this one

2337. actually they made it in Beijing

  2338. the door project

2339. and so we just want to

  2340. honor them

  2341. and thank them

2342. for being a part of

  2343. what they've been

  2344. in our church

2345. and so can you come over here

  2346. Carrie

  2347. I've known Mark

  2348. and Carrie

  2349. for a long time

  2350. we met in Beijing

  2351. at BICF

  2352. and so they tried

  2353. to recruit me

  2354. to be the pastor

  2355. in Beijing

2356. and we tried to recruit them

  2357. to come down here

  2358. and be worship leaders

  2359. so we won

  2360. kind of

  2361. right

  2362. and so

2363. we just wanted to give you

  2364. this is a statue

2365. that means a lot to me

  2366. and it's

  2367. it's a statue

  2368. of Christ

  2369. washing Peter's feet

  2370. and it's just

  2371. of being servants

  2372. and you guys

  2373. are amazing servants

  2374. and I'm just

  2375. always humbled by

  2376. just

  2377. it's been so good

  2378. to have you here

  2379. and so

  2380. we just

2381. yeah we love you guys

2382. and want to give you that

2383. and thank you for loving us

  2384. and pouring into our

  2385. worship team

  2386. yeah

  2387. yeah

  2388. yeah

  2389. thank you

  2390. thank you

  2391. okay

  2392. and then

  2393. so

  2394. with that

2395. let me pray for us

  2396. and

2397. we'll see you next week

  2398. at ISF

  2399. and I hope that you're

  2400. encouraged

  2401. by how amazing

  2402. God is

  2403. don't get de-gospelized

  2404. this week

  2405. and make sure you

  2406. gospelize people

  2407. around you

  2408. with God's love

  2409. and his passion

  2410. for you

  2411. Father we just

2412. thank you for this day

2413. we thank you for your

  2414. goodness in our life

  2415. and your mercy

2416. we thank you for friends

  2417. like Carolyn

  2418. I'm sure there's many

  2419. others who are leaving

  2420. who've been a huge part

  2421. of this church

  2422. we pray that you

  2423. would be with them

  2424. they are missionaries

  2425. we send out

  2426. we pray for

  2427. Mark and Carrie

2428. as they go to Beijing

  2429. from here

  2430. to help them

  2431. with the worship there

  2432. we pray that you

  2433. would go before them

2434. in the midst of all this

  2435. Lord we're just

  2436. ever mindful

  2437. of our frailty

  2438. in the battle

  2439. around us

  2440. and we're so thankful

  2441. that you brought

  2442. brothers and sisters

  2443. to be with us

  2444. on this journey

  2445. that they come alongside

  2446. they lift us up

  2447. they carry our burdens

  2448. they point out sin

  2449. they encourage us

  2450. they spur us on

  2451. to walk with you

  2452. I just think

  2453. people look at

  2454. the church

  2455. and they're weirded out

  2456. by how amazingly

  2457. you bring us together

  2458. through the power

  2459. of your son

  2460. and so we embrace

  2461. that

  2462. we pray that

  2463. we pray that

  2464. you would be honored

  2465. and glorified

  2466. through that

  2467. and we love you

  2468. we love you

  2469. we pray these things

  2470. for your son

  2471. in Jesus' name

  2472. amen

  2473. see you next week
