  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of Luke, chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Under these circumstances, after so many thousands of people had gathered together,

  4. that they were stepping on one another,

  5. he began saying to his disciples, first of all,

  6. Beware of the laven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy,

  7. but there is nothing covered up that will not be revealed,

  8. and hidden that will not be known.

  9. Accordingly, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard,

  10. in the light and what you have whispered in the inner rooms will be proclaimed upon the housetops.

  11. I say to you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body,

  12. and after that have no more that they can do.

  13. But I will warn you whom to fear.

  14. Fear the one who, after he has killed, has authority to cast into hell.

  15. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

  16. Are not five sparrows sold for two cents?

  17. Yet not one of them is forgotten before God.

  18. Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

  19. Do not fear.

  20. You are more valuable than many sparrows.

  21. And I say to you, everyone who confesses me before men,

  22. the Son of Man will confess him also before the angels of God.

  23. But he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

  24. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man,

  25. it will be forgiven him.

  26. But he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit,

  27. it will not be forgiven him.

  28. When they bring you before the synagogues,

  29. and the rulers,

  30. and the authorities,

  31. do not worry about how or what you are to speak in your defense,

  32. or what you are to say.

  33. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour

  34. what you ought to say.

  35. This is the reading of God's Word.

  36. How's everybody doing?

  37. Who made it in before they got poured on?

  38. Because I saw some people just running.

  39. I looked up, and all of a sudden it was dark,

  40. and it was like just pouring out there.

  41. And so you get an extra blessing if you made it in the rain, right?

  42. You get an extra, extra blessing if you made it in the rain without getting wet.

  43. So that's even no one else gets that, I understand.

  44. That's okay.

  45. Okay.

  46. We are looking at this passage.

  47. My question is,

  48. when you heard Kelvin read the passage for today,

  49. did you have a lot of questions about that passage?

  50. If you're honest, you have a lot of questions.

  51. I mean, there's a lot of things.

  52. It's the passage where pastors don't like to teach it or preach it.

  53. It's one of those passages that you get in there and you're like, wow, there's some really hard stuff here.

  54. There's some really difficult stuff.

  55. The way the room is configured, I might just walk back here and grab somebody.

  56. This is interesting configuration.

  57. But you read this passage and it's hard.

  58. There's some tough stuff here.

  59. I said, those last five verses, there's some hard words going on there, right?

  60. When I was praying about this passage for the last couple weeks, I had a lot of things going through my mind.

  61. One of the thoughts or these images I experienced, it kind of flashed me back to 1999, 2000.

  62. So in 1989, I'm getting old, 1989, 1900.

  63. A couple of friends and I were teaching in mainland China.

  64. And we thought that we wanted to do something fun for the Chinese New Year.

  65. And so we had this bright idea.

  66. It was me and two other, another guy and two girls and our team.

  67. We were in Tianjin.

  68. And we had this bright idea.

  69. We said, hey, let's take a vacation for the Chinese New Year.

  70. Let's go to North Vietnam.

  71. So this is 1999, North Vietnam.

  72. And that sounds like a really neat place.

  73. Sounds like a fun place.

  74. We've never been there.

  75. Let's do this.

  76. Let's see what it's like.

  77. And so we could speak Mandarin.

  78. And so we went to Beijing and we went to the North Vietnamese embassy.

  79. And the Chinese guard at the front let us in because we spoke Mandarin.

  80. We walked in there.

  81. And the guy came to the front desk.

  82. And there's two pictures of the fathers, the father and the father in the back.

  83. And the army officer came there.

  84. And so we're still speaking Mandarin to him.

  85. And we say, yeah, we'd like to visit your country during the Chinese New Year.

  86. And he started asking some questions.

  87. And finally he just stopped and he looked at us and he goes, what country are you from?

  88. And we said, we're Americans.

  89. And we just want to come check out North Korea because we've heard so much about it.

  90. And we just want to experience your culture.

  91. And all of a sudden the guy looked at us and he stopped speaking Mandarin and he spoke English.

  92. And he said, perhaps we will not have tourism in our country this year.

  93. We took that to mean that they didn't want Americans into North Korea in 1999.

  94. And so we ended up going into Cambodia, which was also just weird.

  95. I've said before that if I were going to write a book, probably the first chapter of my book would be the dumb things I've done in my life.

  96. I would use stupid, but we're not supposed to use stupid in our family, right?

  97. So the dumb things I've done in my life.

  98. And chapter one, the dumbest thing I've ever done in my life would be this story here.

  99. As we were walking into Cambodia, there was still this conflict going on with the Khmer Rouge and the government fighters.

  100. In fact, when we went into Phnom Penh in 99, they had just built this kiosk with the skulls.

  101. And there were actually skeletons still in some of the schools where they were torturing people.

  102. And so we said, let's fly up to Angkor Wat.

  103. Now, I've never been to Angkor Wat and I haven't been there since then.

  104. Now I know it's this big resort area with casinos and all that.

  105. But back then it was just an airport and a village.

  106. And so we flew up there and we didn't know what we were doing at all.

  107. So my wife is very glad that I wasn't married to her at this time and that I was a single guy.

  108. And so we came into the airport and we just walked out of the door and this little boy grabbed us and he said, do you need a place to stay?

  109. We said, yeah, we need a place to stay.

  110. We don't have any place to stay.

  111. We need a tour guide.

  112. We want you to show us around Angkor Wat.

  113. He said, okay.

  114. And so something should have clicked in my head because we drove into the village of Siem Reap and there were army units everywhere.

  115. There were soldiers guarding the bridge.

  116. There were machine guns set up.

  117. There were mortar emplacements.

  118. There were just soldiers everywhere.

  119. And we ended up staying in this guy's house with his parents.

  120. And about 12 o'clock at night, all of a sudden the sky was lit up with machine gun fire.

  121. And there were mortars going off and just everything was just chaos.

  122. And the only thing we could think is, okay, we're going to get kidnapped.

  123. We're going to get kidnapped and someone's going to sell us for a lot of money because we're a Westerner or whatever.

  124. And that night we slept.

  125. We got very little sleep.

  126. And we made it through the night.

  127. And the morning he took us to Angkor Wat and we were walking around this temple complex and it was beautiful.

  128. We walked out the back of this temple complex and we ran into this UN mine sweeping team.

  129. Okay, so there was a Swedish guy.

  130. He might have been Finnish.

  131. I can't tell.

  132. They all look alike, tall, blonde hair.

  133. And he was directing four Khmer guys and they were basically sweeping the field for mines.

  134. And so we started talking to him and he showed us the mines that they were uncovering because Cambodia is one of the most heavily populated bombed mine places in the world.

  135. And as we were talking, his walkie-talkie went crazy.

  136. And he picked up his walkie-talkie and he's listening and he's yelling.

  137. And we were just sitting there and we're like, okay, this cannot be good.

  138. And he says, we have to leave right now.

  139. And we said, why?

  140. He says, a Khmer Rouge unit was just seen.

  141. They're sweeping back into this area.

  142. They've heard there's some foreigners here and they're looking for you.

  143. We have to leave right now.

  144. And we said, okay, where are we going to go?

  145. We're going to go through this minefield.

  146. And we said, what?

  147. He says, we're going to go through this minefield.

  148. He says, watch me wherever I step.

  149. Put your feet there.

  150. Know why?

  151. Okay, so we're in the middle of this chaos in this jungle.

  152. The Khmer Rouge are rushing in.

  153. We're following this Finnish guy followed by four Khmer minesweepers.

  154. And we're walking through a minefield.

  155. And all I'm thinking is mines everywhere.

  156. Mines bad.

  157. Where's that guy's footprints?

  158. And stepping in those footprints.

  159. But we made it out.

  160. When I think of today's passage, it's all about mines that we as Christians walk into every day.

  161. Sometimes we don't know we're in the middle of the minefield.

  162. Sometimes we're playing ball or basketball.

  163. We're doing stuff within the minefield.

  164. But the passage today is all about disciples.

  165. Luke 12 is all about Christ followers.

  166. It's all about disciples, people who are following Christ.

  167. And what Christ is going to warn us and his disciples is that there's mines all around you.

  168. Be careful where you step.

  169. Because you'll get hurt.

  170. Now in Luke 11, we haven't been there for about five weeks.

  171. We're going through Luke as a church.

  172. We're halfway through right now.

  173. So we're about a year and eight months old.

  174. We're halfway through.

  175. So in two years from now, we'll finish Luke and we'll start something else.

  176. But in Luke 11, remember, there was this scene.

  177. And Jesus was having dinner with these Pharisees.

  178. And it got intense.

  179. I mean, it got really intense.

  180. In fact, it got so intense that the Pharisees walked out.

  181. And in their mind, we're told in Scripture, they want to kill Jesus.

  182. That's all they're thinking about is we are going to get rid of this guy.

  183. He's dangerous.

  184. He's terrible.

  185. We're going to kill him.

  186. Now at the same time as he's having this conflict with the religious leaders of his day,

  187. all the people are flocking to Jesus.

  188. All the masses were told in Luke 11 and Luke 12.

  189. The word there, myriads, is the largest word in Greek.

  190. It means 10,000 people.

  191. It means at least 10,000 people, maybe more than 10,000 people.

  192. So all these people are flocking to Jesus because they want to hear of this young teacher who's come in,

  193. and he's basically taking to task all the religious leaders of the day because everyone knows that the Pharisees are corrupt and they're no good.

  194. And you have to understand here that as the people flock in in this passage,

  195. it's becoming very difficult to keep being a disciple of Jesus.

  196. On one hand, it's getting dangerous because now they know that the religious leaders, the synagogue, and everybody is out to kill Jesus.

  197. And if you're with Jesus, you are in risk of getting killed.

  198. So the disciples are worried, and some of them are actually falling away because it's becoming too difficult to say,

  199. I follow Jesus.

  200. The pressure in their workplace, the pressure at home, the pressure in their community,

  201. it's just getting so high and so difficult, people are falling away.

  202. And they say, I can't say it anymore.

  203. Every time I say it at the bank, people laugh at me.

  204. Every time I say it at school, people think, well, you must not be educated because everyone knows that Christianity and science can't interact with each other.

  205. And so you have this group of disciples who are following Jesus, and they're sneaking out the back door

  206. because they realize that pretty soon the cost is going to become very difficult and very high for them to follow Christ.

  207. On the other hand, you have this mass of people that are coming to visit Jesus.

  208. I mean, if you read the Luke 12 passage, the way Luke, the physician, very detailed, is writing it,

  209. he's almost describing it like a rock concert.

  210. He's saying, there's a rock concert, and 10,000 people have come to see Jesus perform.

  211. And there's so many people that they're crawling all over each other.

  212. I mean, literally in Greek, that's what he's saying.

  213. They're stepping over each other to get to Jesus.

  214. They want to hear him talk.

  215. They want to hear him do miracles.

  216. They want to see him perform.

  217. They want to see him fight the Pharisees.

  218. And so there's this atmosphere like Woodstock where everybody wants to be with Jesus.

  219. And in the midst of this, Jesus sees all of these things happening.

  220. And he knows what's going on in our hearts.

  221. And he knows what's going on in the disciples' hearts.

  222. And he pulls them aside.

  223. And he teaches them a lesson about what it means to follow him when things are difficult and when things are good.

  224. Are you with me?

  225. Am I making sense?

  226. Do you know where we're at?

  227. And so if you go to your passage in Luke, we look at this passage here.

  228. So the disciples are being pulled away.

  229. Things are crazy.

  230. And in Luke chapter 12, verse 1, we read these first passages here.

    Luke 12:1

  231. Jesus is going to warn his disciples.

  232. He's going to warn us about something that we need to be careful of.

  233. He's going to warn us that we're going to walk into this minefield.

  234. And this minefield is going to destroy us.

  235. And we're not even going to know that we're playing around in it.

  236. Verse 1.

  237. Under these circumstances, after so many thousands, the Greek word is myriads, the same word in heaven, myriads and myriads of angels,

  238. at least 10,000 people are gathered together.

  239. They're stepping on one another.

  240. And he pulls his disciples aside.

  241. Now he's speaking to Christians.

  242. And he says this,

  243. Beware.

  244. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  245. Now the word beware is very intentional.

  246. It says put your mind to, think about, study, know where it is, and not only do that, but avoid it.

  247. Avoid it.

  248. And so he brings his disciples together.

  249. And he says this huge word picture.

  250. The minute they heard leaven, they would have thought back to Exodus when all of the people of God left Egypt.

  251. And they're to bring no leaven with them.

  252. Leaven is this microbe.

  253. It's this yeast.

  254. It's a microorganism.

  255. I mean, if you're a cooker, you know what it does.

  256. You stick it in dough and put water in it.

  257. And with sugar, and I tell, if you're at my home and I was telling my kids what I would say is,

  258. you put this little creature inside the dough, it eats, and then it poops.

  259. And its poop is gas, and the gas makes the bread rise.

  260. Right?

  261. That's what's happening.

  262. So next time you eat leavened bread, you think you're eating bread with poop in it.

  263. Right?

  264. Little da bien.

  265. Right?

  266. Okay.

  267. So anyway, so you're eating this leaven, and when Jesus uses that word for leaven,

  268. he always attaches it to Pharisees, and leaven is almost always a bad thing.

  269. Leaven is this small little thing that you can't see.

  270. It's like a mine.

  271. It's something that you don't know, but if it's there in your life, it does a lot of damage.

  272. It changes, and it can hurt you, and it can destroy you.

  273. And in this case, Jesus says that what it will do is it will make you a hypocrite.

  274. Now, Jesus is going to tell his disciples three times to beware of leaven.

  275. The first time he's going to say, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, because that's hypocrisy.

  276. The second time he's going to say, beware of the leaven of the Sadducees, because that's materialism.

  277. And the third thing he's going to say is, beware of the leaven of Herod,

  278. which is political power in the misuse of friendships, because that will destroy you.

  279. And so these mines are laid out there, and he's telling his disciples,

  280. beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, because this leaven is hypocrisy.

  281. Now, hypocrisy, to be a hypocrite, is a very interesting Greek word.

  282. It's very, very old.

  283. Actually, to be a hypocrite, all it meant would be to be one who speaks.

  284. And the word hypocrisy, actually, all it means is to be one who is answering.

  285. But that Greek word moved from being something that was in a monologue or a dialogue in a play

  286. to being something that was done in acting.

  287. And so now, when the people heard this word hypocrite,

  288. immediately what they would understand is someone who wears a mask.

  289. And so if you went to a Greek play, there wasn't a lot of costumes,

  290. there wasn't a lot of fanfare, there wasn't a lot of backdrops.

  291. It was barren.

  292. But whenever somebody changed character, they put on a mask.

  293. And in Greek, you would say, he is playing a hypocrite.

  294. He is acting outwardly, what he's not like on the inside.

  295. He's wearing a mask.

  296. He's acting a part.

  297. He's conforming to the values that everybody expects him to in his world, in his family.

  298. He's a chameleon.

  299. He changes who he is.

  300. He's trying to fit in.

  301. He's trying to make people think, to believe that there's something that they are not.

  302. Have you ever met anybody like that?

  303. He's inconsistent.

  304. And what Paul says and what Jesus says about hypocrisy is that it is always deliberate.

  305. It's always on purpose.

  306. And that we use our words and our actions either positively or negatively to determine what people think about us.

  307. Now, Jesus is going to talk about it a couple times here in this passage and later on.

  308. Actually, he's going to use the word hypocrisy and fear four times.

  309. And he's going to say, the reason you and I are hypocrites.

  310. And let's just get this out right away, okay?

  311. I'm not speaking because I'm not a hypocrite.

  312. I'm speaking because I am a hypocrite.

  313. And for three weeks, I've been struggling with this passage.

  314. Like, okay, God, show me where I'm a hypocrite.

  315. Show me where I'm acting hypocritical of people.

  316. Show me where my actions and my words are hypocrisy.

  317. For three weeks, I've been doing that.

  318. You only get to do it for 40 minutes.

  319. But Jesus wants to show us that there's a huge danger if we do that.

  320. And if we do that, we lose the gospel.

  321. We lose the power of walking in the spirit that God has given us.

  322. And so he's going to talk about this struggle that we have.

  323. And at the core of this struggle is this idea of fear.

  324. He's going to say to you and me that we all fear something.

  325. We all fear something.

  326. We either fear man and the things around us or we fear God.

  327. I mean, there's not two other thrones in our life.

  328. There's one throne.

  329. There's one center.

  330. There's one heart in our life.

  331. And Jesus is saying to his disciples, he's pleading to them as they begin this journey as disciples,

  332. he's going to say, hey, you either fear man or you fear God.

  333. And you need to be careful of who you fear because if you fear the wrong thing,

  334. you're walking into a landmine field and it's going to destroy you.

  335. Is that clear?

  336. I mean, I want to make sure that there's no unclearness here.

  337. Because sometimes my wife says that wasn't very clear.

  338. And she's totally right.

  339. I love you.

  340. But I want to make sure this is really clear.

  341. Because what Jesus is saying here is that you and I fear.

  342. And this fear drives us to become hypocrites.

  343. And it causes us to change our life and to change our actions.

  344. And when we walk into the boardroom tomorrow, we're either fearing God or we're fearing man.

  345. When you walk into your classroom as a professor or a teacher,

  346. either God is on the throne of your life and you're fearing him,

  347. or you're fearing your students, the administration, the people who pay your salary, you're fearing them.

  348. When you walk down the street as you're living life, going to Lan Kui Fung,

  349. or wherever God has you meeting people and being missional and sharing with them about Jesus in your life,

  350. wherever that is, you're either fearing God or you're fearing man.

  351. And whatever you fear controls the destiny of your life.

  352. Do you see why this is so important?

  353. I mean, everybody's becoming rock stars.

  354. Everybody's getting popular.

  355. Everybody's going towards the disciples.

  356. They all want to be with them.

  357. They're the in crowd.

  358. Everybody wants to hear what they have to say.

  359. And Jesus says, be careful.

  360. Because when you get popular,

  361. you tend to fear people

  362. more than you fear God.

  363. Be careful.

  364. Because when people start liking you,

  365. which isn't a bad thing,

  366. you're going to change how you act

  367. and how you dress

  368. and what you say

  369. because you want to keep that popularity.

  370. And Jesus is saying,

  371. be careful.

  372. Be careful who you fear.

  373. Maybe you could ask yourself these questions.

  374. These are questions I've been asking myself

  375. the last three weeks.

  376. Are you a people pleaser?

  377. When people come and ask you to do something,

  378. do you say, yeah, I can do it,

  379. even though you know you can't do it?

  380. I mean, when you look at your schedule,

  381. is your schedule overcommitted?

  382. Do you have a billion things you're doing this week,

  383. but none of them have a focus,

  384. none of them have a purpose?

  385. They're all just things that people say,

  386. you need to do this,

  387. you need to do this,

  388. you need to do this,

  389. you need to do this.

  390. Do you answer yes to everything?

  391. When people ask you to do something,

  392. do you say yes?

  393. Question two,

  394. do you second guess your decisions?

  395. Do you make a decision,

  396. but then you change it

  397. because you're worried about

  398. what people are going to think?

  399. Come on, girls.

  400. I like the pink outfit.

  401. No, no, no, I should wear the blue outfit.

  402. Now, this never happens in my house,

  403. but I've heard that it does happen

  404. with women in households.

  405. Guys, you're the same way.

  406. Do I wear this tie?

  407. Do I wear that tie?

  408. What's the power tie?

  409. What is going to give me

  410. the most respect in this boardroom?

  411. What am I going to do?

  412. How am I going to dress?

  413. And Jesus says, be careful.

  414. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing,

  415. but if you do it out of fear,

  416. it's a terrible thing.

  417. Do you struggle with peer pressure?

  418. Is it important what people think about you?

  419. Do you struggle with family pressure?

  420. When your family says,

  421. we need you to do this,

  422. do you go, okay, we'll do that?

  423. When your family sets up this agenda

  424. of things you need to be doing

  425. and how you need to be doing it,

  426. do you drop everything

  427. even if you already have your own family?

  428. Do you struggle with,

  429. as a 35-year-old guy,

  430. your mom still coming into the house

  431. and making your bed

  432. and doing your laundry

  433. and putting groceries

  434. in your refrigerator?

  435. And your wife looks at you and goes,

  436. you know, I really hate it

  437. when your mom comes in

  438. and rearranges all the furniture.

  439. Can you tell her not to do that?

  440. And the guy goes, oh, man, oh.

  441. Yeah, I wish I could,

  442. but you know, it's my mom.

  443. I can't do it.

  444. Do you struggle with that?

  445. And finally, the question is,

  446. are you worried about your self-esteem?

  447. Is self-esteem critical for you?

  448. And how you answer all these questions

  449. determine what you fear.

  450. There's a lot of talk in America nowadays

  451. about bullying and schools and Internet

  452. and the interaction of peers

  453. among our children

  454. and in the American papers,

  455. and I think it's a little here,

  456. the big thought is peer pressure.

  457. And when we talk about our high school kids,

  458. we say there's a lot of peer pressure.

  459. As adults, we use the words differently.

  460. We don't use pressure,

  461. but we say people-pleasing.

  462. We're not under peer pressure.

  463. We're under people-pleasing.

  464. But what Jesus is going to say in this scripture

  465. and what God's word says

  466. is it's called the fear of man.

  467. And hypocrisy is always a bad thing,

  468. that it will destroy you,

  469. it will destroy your life,

  470. it will un-gospel you.

  471. You won't understand what the gospel means

  472. because you're so worried about living lives

  473. the way people want you to live it.

  474. And in the passage,

  475. Jesus gives us four ways

  476. to detect hypocrisy in our life.

  477. He says four things

  478. that you need to be aware of.

  479. If you experience any of these four things,

  480. or these are things that you get yourself

  481. out of the minefield,

  482. if you're about to walk into the minefield

  483. of people-pleasing,

  484. think about these four things.

  485. And these four things,

  486. he says to his disciples,

  487. these things will change everything.

  488. In verse two and three,

  489. he says this,

  490. but there's nothing covered up

  491. that will not be revealed.

  492. That word revealed is a word

  493. that only can be associated with God.

  494. And so what he's saying there

  495. is there's nothing covered up.

  496. It's this word of like,

  497. you dug this deep hole,

  498. 10 feet deep,

  499. you put something in it,

  500. you buried it up,

  501. and you say,

  502. no one will ever find out what's here.

  503. But Jesus says,

  504. God will come around

  505. and he will reveal that.

  506. So there's nothing covered up

  507. that will not be revealed.

  508. There's nothing hidden

  509. that will not be known.

  510. Accordingly,

  511. whatever you have said in the dark

  512. will be heard in the light.

  513. What you have whispered

  514. in the inner rooms,

  515. in Greek it's the secret place.

  516. What you've whispered

  517. in the secret place of your house

  518. or of your heart

  519. will be proclaimed,

  520. shouted,

  521. yelled out from the mountaintops.

  522. And so the first warning

  523. that Jesus gives us,

  524. he says this,

  525. if you're tempted

  526. to be a hypocrite,

  527. if you're being tempted

  528. with fearing man

  529. more than you fear God,

  530. remember that whatever is said,

  531. whatever is hidden,

  532. eventually God will bring out

  533. into the light.

  534. Now in this passage,

  535. he's saying it in a good way.

  536. He's saying it to his disciples

  537. who are worried about

  538. what people are going

  539. to think about him,

  540. who are worried about

  541. whether they're making a difference,

  542. who are worried about

  543. whether they leave father and mother

  544. and come to follow Jesus.

  545. Will that make a difference

  546. in the end?

  547. And what Jesus says

  548. to his disciples

  549. and he says to us is this,

  550. keep doing the right thing.

  551. Keep following me.

  552. Keep fearing me.

  553. Keep being a good employee

  554. even though no one else

  555. in the office recognizes

  556. or cares about it.

  557. Keep being a good boss

  558. who treats your people fairly.

  559. Keep being a kind wife

  560. whose husband probably isn't here

  561. on Sunday

  562. and he could care less

  563. about spiritual things.

  564. But Christ is in your heart

  565. and you're loving him,

  566. you're caring for him,

  567. you're serving him

  568. and you wonder,

  569. is this ever going to make a difference?

  570. Because no one sees what I'm doing.

  571. And what Jesus says here is,

  572. yes,

  573. it will make a difference.

  574. because one day

  575. everything good

  576. that you've done,

  577. even though it's been hidden

  578. in the dark,

  579. will be seen.

  580. Honor me.

  581. One day,

  582. I am going to get up

  583. on the hilltop,

  584. I'm going to get up

  585. on the housetop

  586. and I'm going to reveal

  587. everything

  588. of your faithfulness

  589. and your goodness.

  590. In Hebrew,

  591. there's an idiom

  592. that's attached to this story

  593. and it's basically

  594. you can't hide the sun.

  595. That if you're shining,

  596. if you're being faithful,

  597. if you're doing what God

  598. has called you to do,

  599. don't worry about

  600. what's going to happen.

  601. It might not seem

  602. like anything's happening,

  603. but what Jesus says here

  604. is don't be a hypocrite,

  605. don't cover it up,

  606. don't stop doing it,

  607. be who you are

  608. because one day

  609. all of these things

  610. you're being faithful

  611. right now,

  612. all of these things,

  613. you're going to be rewarded for.

  614. All of these things

  615. are going to be seen

  616. in the light.

  617. All of these things,

  618. I'm going to bless you

  619. for your faithfulness.

  620. But the disciples

  621. were struggling

  622. and they were like,

  623. well, no one sees

  624. what we're doing.

  625. I mean, we're speaking

  626. the gospel to everybody,

  627. but everybody wants

  628. to do this.

  629. What do we do

  630. when you're gone?

  631. And Jesus says to them,

  632. be aware

  633. that everything you do

  634. will be seen.

  635. Everything you do

  636. will be seen.

  637. Another thing

  638. that Jesus says here

  639. to avoid the minefields,

  640. to avoid hypocrisy

  641. is in verse 4 and 5.

  642. He says to his disciples,

  643. I say to you,

  644. my friends,

  645. it's the only time

  646. in the Greek Bible

  647. that that word

  648. is used,

  649. my friends,

  650. it's the only time

  651. that Jesus speaks it

  652. and what he means there

  653. is there's this

  654. intimate relationship

  655. with him

  656. and his disciples.

  657. There's an intimate

  658. relationship with God

  659. and you.

  660. You are God's friends.

  661. He says,

  662. I say to you,

  663. my friends,

  664. don't be afraid

  665. of those who can

  666. kill the body,

  667. but after that

  668. they have no more

  669. they can do.

  670. But I warn you

  671. whom to fear.

  672. Fear the one

  673. who after he is killed

  674. has the authority

  675. to cast into hell.

  676. Yes,

  677. I tell you

  678. to fear him.

  679. And what Jesus

  680. is saying here

  681. is that you can

  682. avoid hypocrisy,

  683. you can avoid

  684. the minefield

  685. by realizing

  686. that as you walk

  687. with him,

  688. things are not

  689. always perfect.

  690. Because sometimes

  691. stepping out

  692. and saying

  693. I follow Christ

  694. has repercussions

  695. to it.

  696. Sometimes those

  697. repercussions

  698. are financial,

  699. sometimes they're

  700. emotional,

  701. sometimes they're

  702. physical,

  703. sometimes they're

  704. spiritual.

  705. I mean,

  706. we don't ever

  707. talk about that

  708. often in church

  709. because we want

  710. the gospel to seem

  711. sexy and fun

  712. and everything's

  713. perfect and

  714. everything's good,

  715. but what Jesus

  716. is warning his

  717. friends,

  718. what he's

  719. warning us,

  720. is that if we

  721. walk with him,

  722. if we do the

  723. right thing,

  724. sometimes things

  725. will become

  726. difficult.

  727. And that's okay.

  728. Be aware of that.

  729. That same summer

  730. we went to

  731. Saigon

  732. and I was in

  733. this park of

  734. Saigon

  735. 1990,

  736. 1989,

  737. 1990,

  738. and we were

  739. walking with

  740. our friends

  741. and this

  742. little old

  743. Vietnamese guy

  744. came up to

  745. us and he

  746. spoke perfect

  747. English.

  748. I mean,

  749. America still

  750. hadn't normalized

  751. relationships with

  752. Vietnam,

  753. so we could be

  754. there as tourists

  755. but we weren't

  756. supposed to have

  757. American dollars

  758. in there and

  759. we weren't

  760. supposed to do

  761. business there

  762. and all these

  763. things.

  764. And this little

  765. Vietnamese guy

  766. came up to us

  767. in the middle

  768. of this park

  769. and he spoke

  770. perfect English.

  771. And we were

  772. astounded and I

  773. said,

  774. tell me,

  775. who are you?

  776. And he goes,

  777. I was a high

  778. school teacher.

  779. And when the

  780. communists came

  781. in,

  782. they put me in

  783. prison for 20

  784. years.

  785. And after 20

  786. years,

  787. they just let us

  788. go because they

  789. figured we were

  790. too old to do

  791. anything.

  792. And they said to

  793. me,

  794. don't share your

  795. faith.

  796. faith.

  797. And I'm

  798. looking at this

  799. guy right there

  800. and he's

  801. speaking perfect

  802. English to us

  803. and I said,

  804. so what are you

  805. doing?

  806. He goes,

  807. well,

  808. I just come to

  809. the park and

  810. anybody I see

  811. who looks like a

  812. Westerner,

  813. I just go up and

  814. start speaking to

  815. them and sharing

  816. with them about

  817. Jesus in my life.

  818. And I was like,

  819. dude,

  820. you spent 20

  821. years in prison.

  822. Aren't you worried

  823. that they're going

  824. to put you back

  825. there?

  826. And he said

  827. this to me,

  828. God's word says,

  829. don't fear him

  830. who can just

  831. kill you.

  832. But fear him

  833. who can,

  834. after he kills

  835. you,

  836. takes your soul

  837. and separates

  838. it away from

  839. him.

  840. You know how

  841. big I felt at

  842. that time because

  843. I'm this missionary

  844. living in China

  845. doing all these

  846. cool things and

  847. sacrificing nothing,

  848. which is okay.

  849. But this guy

  850. realized the

  851. principle of

  852. hypocrisy,

  853. that if you

  854. feel like you

  855. need to change,

  856. if you feel like

  857. the pressure is

  858. intense,

  859. if you feel like

  860. something's going

  861. to happen to you

  862. physically,

  863. what Jesus says

  864. to his disciples,

  865. and every one of

  866. them died that way

  867. except for John,

  868. he says,

  869. don't worry about

  870. those who can

  871. kill you because

  872. all they can do

  873. is kill you.

  874. But worry about

  875. him who holds

  876. your soul.

  877. I thought about

  878. that a lot.

  879. I don't know if

  880. you struggle with

  881. it, but I think

  882. I do sometimes.

  883. I struggle with

  884. thinking that

  885. heaven is here

  886. and now,

  887. that this is all

  888. there is.

  889. And I don't

  890. really think about

  891. what happens

  892. afterwards.

  893. But what Jesus

  894. is trying to tell

  895. his disciples,

  896. what he's trying

  897. to tell you and

  898. me, is that

  899. amidst the

  900. struggle, amidst

  901. the minefields,

  902. amidst the

  903. hardness and

  904. the difficult

  905. times, realize

  906. that your

  907. physical body

  908. will experience

  909. hard things.

  910. But that's

  911. okay.

  912. Because you

  913. have an

  914. eternity in

  915. heaven waiting

  916. for you with

  917. me.

  918. Jesus goes on

  919. in verse 6 and

  920. 7.

  921. Again, this is a

  922. heavy passage.

  923. This is like,

  924. whoa!

  925. He says this

  926. to his disciples.

  927. He goes, if

  928. you're tempted

  929. to be a

  930. hypocrite, if

  931. you're tempted

  932. to walk into

  933. the minefield,

  934. if you're tempted

  935. to realize that

  936. I need to be

  937. something that I'm

  938. not, the

  939. sixth, he says

  940. this, are not

  941. five sparrows

  942. sold for two

  943. cents?

  944. Yet not one of

  945. them is forgotten

  946. before God.

  947. I mean, he takes

  948. the smallest animal

  949. in their culture

  950. in a market sense.

  951. that you would

  952. buy two sparrows

  953. for one cent.

  954. You could buy

  955. four sparrows

  956. for two cents.

  957. But they were

  958. so cheap, they

  959. threw in a

  960. fifth one.

  961. That's how

  962. worthless sparrows

  963. are.

  964. And what Jesus

  965. says to his

  966. disciples and to

  967. us is that

  968. here God has

  969. so much concern

  970. over something

  971. that seems so

  972. small and so

  973. insignificant.

  974. arrogant.

  975. Surely, he's

  976. more concerned

  977. about us.

  978. Melissa,

  979. Henrika,

  980. 144,000.

  981. Scientists say

  982. that if you have

  983. blonde hair,

  984. you have 144,000

  985. pieces of hair

  986. in your head.

  987. Ed,

  988. Mervyn,

  989. 122,000.

  990. Scientists say

  991. if you have

  992. dark hair,

  993. the average

  994. person has

  995. 122,000

  996. hairs

  997. in their head.

  998. Charles,

  999. for redheads,

  1000. it's 90,000.

  1001. So scientists

  1002. tell us that

  1003. for redheads,

  1004. you have 90,000

  1005. hairs in your

  1006. head.

  1007. Mike,

  1008. Kelvin,

  1009. some of those

  1010. guys who are

  1011. losing that hair

  1012. right here,

  1013. it's less than

  1014. 90,000.

  1015. Okay, God is

  1016. subtracting there,

  1017. right?

  1018. But what the

  1019. scripture says

  1020. here is that

  1021. as you're tempted

  1022. to be a hypocrite,

  1023. as you're tempted

  1024. to act apart,

  1025. as you're tempted

  1026. to be something

  1027. that you're not

  1028. because you're

  1029. worried about

  1030. what people

  1031. are going to

  1032. think about you

  1033. and how they're

  1034. going to act

  1035. around you,

  1036. realize that

  1037. God loves you

  1038. so much

  1039. that every hair

  1040. in your head

  1041. is numbered.

  1042. And not one

  1043. hair in your

  1044. head can fall

  1045. out

  1046. without God

  1047. allowing it to

  1048. happen.

  1049. how do you

  1050. feel when you

  1051. hear that?

  1052. I got to tell

  1053. you, this is

  1054. the hardest

  1055. one for me

  1056. because I have

  1057. so many doubts

  1058. about God's

  1059. goodness sometimes.

  1060. I have so many

  1061. doubts of whether

  1062. he really

  1063. understands,

  1064. if he really

  1065. sees my future,

  1066. if he really

  1067. cares amongst

  1068. the hard,

  1069. difficult times.

  1070. I wonder

  1071. if he really

  1072. understands what's

  1073. going on in my

  1074. world

  1075. sometimes.

  1076. But Jesus

  1077. says when you're

  1078. tempted to

  1079. fear man

  1080. instead of

  1081. fear God,

  1082. you cling to

  1083. the fact

  1084. that God

  1085. loves you,

  1086. he knows you,

  1087. he's always

  1088. there,

  1089. he's always

  1090. involved,

  1091. that nothing

  1092. can happen to

  1093. you without him

  1094. allowing it to

  1095. happen to you.

  1096. And if you

  1097. cling to that,

  1098. if you understand

  1099. that,

  1100. then you won't

  1101. fall into

  1102. hypocrisy.

  1103. That you'll

  1104. fear God

  1105. more than

  1106. you fear man.

  1107. And that word

  1108. fear there

  1109. basically means

  1110. awe,

  1111. and reverence,

  1112. and worship.

  1113. And Jesus

  1114. says when we

  1115. walk through our

  1116. day,

  1117. Lenny,

  1118. when you

  1119. leave here

  1120. with your

  1121. family,

  1122. and you're

  1123. going out

  1124. to eat

  1125. lunch,

  1126. and then

  1127. you're

  1128. going to

  1129. go to

  1130. work

  1131. tomorrow,

  1132. and you're

  1133. going to

  1134. be doing

  1135. things that

  1136. no one's

  1137. going to

  1138. see you

  1139. do,

  1140. God's

  1141. going to

  1142. say,

  1143. be in

  1144. awe of

  1145. me.

  1146. Worship

  1147. me.

  1148. Jason,

  1149. when you

  1150. leave here

  1151. and you

  1152. go to

  1153. China,

  1154. and you're

  1155. doing what

  1156. God has

  1157. you doing,

  1158. every step

  1159. that you

  1160. take,

  1161. God is

  1162. going to

  1163. say,

  1164. no matter

  1165. what happens

  1166. to you,

  1167. I'm in

  1168. control of

  1169. those things.

  1170. and I

  1171. want you

  1172. to worship

  1173. me,

  1174. and love

  1175. me,

  1176. and be

  1177. in awe

  1178. of me.

  1179. Don't fear

  1180. man,

  1181. don't worship

  1182. men,

  1183. don't be

  1184. in awe

  1185. of men,

  1186. but be in

  1187. awe of

  1188. God.

  1189. And if we

  1190. keep that

  1191. in our

  1192. forefront,

  1193. it helps us

  1194. to see the

  1195. landmines,

  1196. and it

  1197. prevents us

  1198. from stepping

  1199. on them

  1200. and blowing

  1201. ourselves

  1202. up.

  1203. And finally,

  1204. the hard

  1205. verses,

  1206. verses 8

  1207. through 12,

  1208. Jesus says

  1209. this,

  1210. and I

  1211. say to you,

  1212. everyone who

  1213. confesses me

  1214. before men,

  1215. the Son of

  1216. Man will

  1217. confess him

  1218. also before

  1219. the angels

  1220. of God,

  1221. but he

  1222. who denies

  1223. me before

  1224. men will

  1225. be denied

  1226. before the

  1227. angels of

  1228. God.

  1229. Everyone who

  1230. speaks a

  1231. word against

  1232. the Son of

  1233. Man,

  1234. it will be

  1235. forgiven

  1236. him,

  1237. but he

  1238. who

  1239. blasphemes

  1240. against the

  1241. Holy Spirit,

  1242. it will not

  1243. be forgiven

  1244. him.

  1245. When they

  1246. bring you

  1247. before the

  1248. synagogues

  1249. and the

  1250. rulers and

  1251. the authorities,

  1252. do not worry

  1253. about how or

  1254. what you are to

  1255. speak in your

  1256. defense or what

  1257. you are to

  1258. say,

  1259. for the Holy

  1260. Spirit will

  1261. teach you in

  1262. that very

  1263. hour what

  1264. you need to

  1265. say.

  1266. And what

  1267. Jesus says to

  1268. his disciples

  1269. and he says

  1270. to us is

  1271. that throughout

  1272. our life we

  1273. have these

  1274. options,

  1275. we have

  1276. these choices

  1277. of who

  1278. we are

  1279. going to

  1280. put on

  1281. our throne.

  1282. Now you are

  1283. going to

  1284. come back

  1285. to that and

  1286. go what

  1287. does that

  1288. mean?

  1289. What does

  1290. number 10

  1291. mean?

  1292. I want to

  1293. know did

  1294. I blaspheme

  1295. the Holy

  1296. Spirit?

  1297. What does

  1298. that mean?

  1299. Am I

  1300. unforgiven?

  1301. Am I

  1302. unforgivable?

  1303. I think it

  1304. depends on

  1305. where you are

  1306. at.

  1307. If this is

  1308. written to

  1309. non-Christians

  1310. what that

  1311. means is that

  1312. God keeps

  1313. bringing himself

  1314. to you.

  1315. People keep

  1316. inviting you to

  1317. church.

  1318. You keep

  1319. hearing of

  1320. God's grace

  1321. and his

  1322. mercy.

  1323. You keep

  1324. seeing how

  1325. incredible community

  1326. is you keep

  1327. seeing the

  1328. power of the

  1329. gospel change

  1330. and transform

  1331. people's lives

  1332. and even as

  1333. that is put in

  1334. front of your

  1335. face you say

  1336. no, no.

  1337. No, I

  1338. just can't do

  1339. it.

  1340. No.

  1341. I don't want

  1342. it.

  1343. I'm more

  1344. happy where I'm

  1345. at.

  1346. I don't want

  1347. that.

  1348. And for those

  1349. he says that

  1350. on that moment

  1351. you close your

  1352. eyes you've

  1353. blasphemed God's

  1354. Holy Spirit

  1355. because the Holy

  1356. Spirit is the

  1357. giver of life.

  1358. He brings truth.

  1359. He presents

  1360. Jesus Christ

  1361. to people

  1362. and in

  1363. saying no

  1364. I don't

  1365. want that

  1366. what you've

  1367. done is you've

  1368. rejected him.

  1369. If you're in a

  1370. family of God

  1371. it doesn't mean

  1372. that you lose

  1373. your salvation

  1374. but what it

  1375. means and

  1376. there's a lot

  1377. of questions

  1378. on this but

  1379. what I tend

  1380. to think it

  1381. means is

  1382. that one

  1383. day as

  1384. Christians we'll

  1385. go before

  1386. God and

  1387. there will be

  1388. this panorama

  1389. played of our

  1390. life.

  1391. And every

  1392. word and

  1393. deed and

  1394. action will

  1395. be played

  1396. before us

  1397. and before

  1398. God.

  1399. And we

  1400. will see the

  1401. opportunities we

  1402. had to make

  1403. Christ known.

  1404. We'll see the

  1405. opportunities we

  1406. had to be a

  1407. part of his

  1408. kingdom and

  1409. allow it to

  1410. grow and reach

  1411. out to people.

  1412. We'll see

  1413. opportunities that

  1414. we had with the

  1415. giftings and

  1416. the talents and

  1417. the money that

  1418. he's given us to

  1419. make an incredible

  1420. impact.

  1421. And we said

  1422. no.

  1423. And there

  1424. seems to be a

  1425. sense that we're

  1426. going to lose

  1427. something.

  1428. We're still

  1429. saved.

  1430. But we're

  1431. going to lose

  1432. something.

  1433. We're going to

  1434. lose something.

  1435. The passage is

  1436. really clear.

  1437. you and I

  1438. have two

  1439. options.

  1440. We have

  1441. one throne in

  1442. our life with

  1443. two people to

  1444. put on it.

  1445. And the

  1446. question is do

  1447. we fear man or

  1448. do we fear

  1449. God?

  1450. Do we care

  1451. about what

  1452. others think?

  1453. Or do we

  1454. care about what

  1455. God thinks more?

  1456. And I'm not

  1457. saying it's bad

  1458. to care about

  1459. what other

  1460. people think.

  1461. But what I'm

  1462. saying is that

  1463. becomes the

  1464. idol that drives

  1465. you in your

  1466. life and it

  1467. predicts everything

  1468. you do.

  1469. then scripture

  1470. says that you're

  1471. fearing man

  1472. instead of

  1473. fearing God.

  1474. Do we strive to

  1475. please others

1476. or do we strive to

  1477. please God?

  1478. Do we trust God

  1479. with everything

  1480. that we have

  1481. and everything

  1482. that he's given

  1483. us?

  1484. Or do we

  1485. trust whatever?

  1486. You fill in the

  1487. blank.

  1488. If you're like

  1489. me it was my

  1490. family.

  1491. It was my

  1492. medical degree.

  1493. It was the

  1494. people I hung

  1495. out with.

  1496. It was the

  1497. bank account.

  1498. It was the

  1499. 280Z that I

  1500. drove in

  1501. college.

  1502. Whatever it is

  1503. you fill it in

  1504. there.

  1505. I don't know

  1506. what it is in

  1507. your life or

  1508. what you've put

  1509. on the throne

  1510. of your life

  1511. but the

  1512. question Jesus

  1513. asked in his

  1514. passage and

  1515. what he warns

  1516. us about is

  1517. that we're

  1518. walking into

  1519. this minefield

  1520. and we need

  1521. to be careful

  1522. of these

  1523. things because

  1524. if we don't

  1525. we'll become

  1526. hypocrites and

  1527. we'll fear man

  1528. instead of God

  1529. and the outcome

  1530. of that is

  1531. always bad.

  1532. It's always

  1533. bad.

  1534. It's always

  1535. bad.

  1536. Does that

  1537. make sense?

  1538. This is a

  1539. tough passage

  1540. guys because

  1541. this is the

  1542. only time where

  1543. Jesus actually

  1544. uses a negative

  1545. thing to

  1546. reinforce what

  1547. he wants us

  1548. to do.

  1549. It's almost

  1550. always positive

  1551. do this and

  1552. these things

  1553. happen but

  1554. here he's

  1555. saying guys

  1556. if you don't

  1557. do this

  1558. this is what's

  1559. going to

  1560. happen.

  1561. And he wants

  1562. us to be very

  1563. clear as we

  1564. walk with him

  1565. and as we

  1566. follow him.

  1567. So where are

  1568. you standing

  1569. today?

  1570. What do you

  1571. fear?

  1572. on Monday

  1573. when you

  1574. leave here

  1575. what's the

  1576. worst thing

  1577. that could

  1578. happen to

  1579. you?

  1580. What's your

  1581. greatest fear?

  1582. What's the

  1583. thing that's

  1584. going to

  1585. happen in

  1586. your place

  1587. that the

  1588. minute you

  1589. leave here

  1590. and you've

  1591. been worshiping

  1592. and everything

  1593. is good

  1594. and someone

  1595. looks at you

  1596. and all of a

  1597. sudden you're

  1598. like whoop.

  1599. And it's like

  1600. you just shut

  1601. down what God's

  1602. been doing in

  1603. your life for

  1604. the weekend or

  1605. however long you've

  1606. been in

  1607. community.

  1608. We need to

  1609. be in

  1610. community.

  1611. We need to

  1612. be with

  1613. brothers and

  1614. sisters all

  1615. the time.

  1616. We need to

  1617. have people

  1618. around us who

  1619. are continually

  1620. gospeling,

  1621. sharing the

  1622. gospel message

  1623. with us,

  1624. asking us

  1625. questions,

  1626. challenging us,

  1627. encouraging us,

  1628. spurring us on to

  1629. great and

  1630. incredible things.

  1631. We need to

  1632. beware that

  1633. there's a

  1634. minefield all

  1635. around us and

  1636. this minefield is

  1637. going to blow up

  1638. if we're not

  1639. careful and that's

  1640. why we need people

  1641. around us and we

  1642. need to understand

  1643. and think every

  1644. moment that we go

  1645. through our day,

  1646. who am I fearing

  1647. here?

  1648. Who have I put

  1649. on the throne

  1650. of my life?

  1651. Because Jesus is

  1652. saying to us,

  1653. the minute we

  1654. put anybody but

  1655. God on there,

  1656. we lose the

  1657. power of the

  1658. gospel.

  1659. And what we've

  1660. done, instead of

  1661. saying it's Jesus

  1662. plus nothing is

  1663. everything, we

  1664. say it's Jesus

  1665. plus something.

  1666. And Jesus is

  1667. telling his

  1668. disciples, and

  1669. Paul told us

  1670. last week, that

  1671. if we do that,

  1672. we've lost

  1673. everything.

  1674. every significant

  1675. event in my life

  1676. that's happened to

  1677. me is because for

  1678. some reason, I'm

  1679. hesitant to share

  1680. this, I wasn't even

  1681. going to share

  1682. this, for some

  1683. reason, I took a

1684. step of faith and I

  1685. chose to fear God

  1686. more than I feared

  1687. man.

  1688. Now there are many

  1689. significant things in

1690. my life when I did

  1691. not choose that.

1692. And now as I look

  1693. back, I grieve and I

  1694. grab onto God's grace

  1695. and mercy and thank

1696. him for where I am

  1697. now.

  1698. The first significant

  1699. thing was when I

  1700. wanted to tithe.

1701. I was in high school.

  1702. I made $50 a week.

  1703. I heard this talk

  1704. about going on an

  1705. adventure with God

  1706. and giving money

  1707. because it was all

  1708. God's money anyway

  1709. and that was really

  1710. novel for me.

  1711. Because I grew up,

  1712. it's all my money.

1713. And so I heard this

  1714. guy preach and I

  1715. said, okay, I'm going

1716. to trust God and I'm

1717. going to take a step

  1718. of faith and I'm

  1719. going to give my

  1720. $5.

  1721. I remember that $5.

  1722. Up until about 10

  1723. years ago, I

  1724. remembered the serial

  1725. number on that $5.

1726. But I had it written

1727. in my Bible and I

  1728. lost that Bible.

  1729. But taking that step

  1730. of faith and trusting

  1731. God changed everything

  1732. in my life.

  1733. Because it started to

1734. free me from stuff and

  1735. from money and it

  1736. allowed me to give

  1737. freedom to give things

1738. that God has given me

  1739. and see his kingdom

  1740. multiplied and blessed

1741. and expanded in ways I

  1742. never would have

  1743. imagined.

  1744. marrying Christina.

1745. I saw this girl walk

  1746. down this Christmas

  1747. conference and something

1748. inside of me, all my

1749. being said, you need to

1750. go and pursue that girl.

  1751. I know without a shadow

1752. of a doubt it was God

  1753. telling me that.

  1754. I don't know.

  1755. I'm not always mystical,

  1756. but I knew here.

1757. I walked up to my best

  1758. friend.

1759. We were roommates and I

1760. said, what do you think

  1761. about Christina?

  1762. I really feel like God's

1763. called me to marry her or

  1764. to pursue her.

  1765. I was 33 years old that

1766. time, so I was getting

  1767. old, right?

  1768. I didn't think I'd ever

  1769. get married anyway.

1770. And my friend looked at

1771. me and said, don't do

  1772. it.

1773. He said, because her old

  1774. boyfriend's coming back

  1775. in town.

  1776. And I think that they're

  1777. going to get back

  1778. together.

1779. And so all the guys

1780. around me, all the peers,

1781. all the men said, don't

  1782. do it, dude.

1783. Do the right thing and

1784. let her get back with

  1785. her old boyfriend.

  1786. But there was just

  1787. something inside of me

  1788. that kept saying, pursue,

  1789. pursue, pursue.

  1790. And I took a step of

  1791. faith.

  1792. And we're here.

  1793. Coming to China.

1794. I grew up in Montana,

  1795. Montgomery, Alabama,

  1796. Texas, New Jersey,

  1797. and Delaware,

  1798. and Colorado.

  1799. Never outside of the

  1800. States.

1801. I felt God was calling

1802. me to come to China to

  1803. work in mainland China.

1804. All my friends, all the

  1805. words, all my parents,

  1806. everything said, don't

  1807. come to China.

  1808. China's terrible.

  1809. Go to Europe.

  1810. Europe's nicer.

1811. But for some reason, I

1812. just took a step of

1813. faith and said, I feel

1814. like God is calling us to

  1815. come to China.

  1816. And I don't know what it

1817. looks like, but I'm going

  1818. to trust you.

1819. And I'm not going to put

  1820. on a mask, but I'm going

1821. to trust you and I'm going

  1822. to walk with you.

  1823. Those three things have

1824. changed my life, but I

1825. know there are many other

  1826. things that could have

  1827. changed my life.

1828. But instead, I feared man

1829. more than I feared God.

1830. God, my prayer for us as a

1831. church, my prayer for you,

  1832. where you're at right now, I

  1833. don't know what you're

1834. fearing, but I pray that you

1835. would leave it here before you

  1836. leave here.

1837. And you walk in faith and

  1838. say, God, I don't know what

1839. this looks like, but I'm going

  1840. to fear you.

1841. Can you show me what it looks

1842. like to fear you in my work?

1843. Can you show me what it looks

1844. like to fear you in this

  1845. relationship?

1846. Can you show me what it looks

1847. like to fear you at church so

1848. that when I walk in those

  1849. doors, I don't have to put

1850. this mask on and people say,

  1851. how are you doing?

  1852. Oh, great.

  1853. Everything's good.

1854. My prayer for us as a church

1855. is that we would hear Jesus'

1856. words and that we would trust

1857. God in the gospel to change

1858. our lives and to turn it into

  1859. something so incredible we

1860. could not even imagine instead

1861. of walking in fear of man.

1862. Father, we thank you for this

  1863. day.

1864. We thank you for your word,

1865. which is living and active,

  1866. and it changes us.

1867. As we look back at the

1868. minefields that your son puts

1869. forth, we realize that so many

1870. times we've made mistakes and

1871. we've stepped on those mines,

1872. and yet you're still there.

  1873. You're still with us.

1874. Father, help us to trust you.

1875. You know where each one of us is

  1876. that right now.

1877. You know the things that we

  1878. fear.

1879. I am very confident that most

1880. of us would never want to share

1881. them in any big group.

1882. But I pray, Lord, that we would

1883. share them with you, that we

1884. would confess them to you, that

1885. we'd repent of these things that

1886. we fear more than you, and that

1887. your spirit would change us, that

1888. your spirit would renew us.

1889. Father, we are thankful of the

1890. mines we've already stepped on, and

1891. so many times we've become

  1892. hypocrites.

1893. And still you come towards us, and

1894. you heal us, and you clean us, and

  1895. you pick us up.

1896. May we be in a community of people

1897. who know us so well, and who know

1898. our minefields so well, that they

1899. lovingly and quickly redirect us

  1900. away from them.

1901. Father, I pray for those in here

  1902. who don't know you.

1903. Your word says that they fear man.

1904. And I think if we're honest, we

1905. would say, yeah, that's true.

1906. That there are certain things in my

1907. life that hold me captive.

1908. That I'm a slave to my work.

1909. I'm a slave to alcohol or drugs.

1910. I'm a slave to money and gambling.

1911. I'm a slave to something that has

1912. done a really poor job of being

  1913. master in my life.

1914. Father, I pray for them that this

1915. moment that you would speak to them,

1916. that they would trust you in your

1917. goodness and your son, and they

1918. would confess those things and

1919. invite you into their life.

1920. And start off with a new mask.

  1921. mask.

1922. The mask of a child of God.

1923. And Father, I pray for our church.

1924. Help us not to be a church who just

  1925. gathers on Sunday.

1926. Father, if that's the type of church

1927. we're going to end up being five

1928. years from now, I pray that you would

  1929. just shut us down.

1930. Just remove us from here.

1931. Because your spirit has so many

1932. greater things to do in Hong Kong and

1933. beyond than to waste time with people

1934. who just want to do status quo every

  1935. Sunday.

1936. Father, help us to see the people

1937. around us who don't know you.

1938. Help us to see the community and the

1939. government and the schools that need

  1940. fixing and praying for.

1941. Help us to trust you to be big because

1942. you are and you control all those

1943. things and you have all their hairs

  1944. numbered also.

1945. And so as we have this fear of becoming

1946. hypocrites when we leave here, Lord,

1947. help us to fall in love with you more

  1948. and more.

1949. Help us to realize the power of your

1950. spirit and the power of the gospel to

  1951. change us.

  1952. May we be different.

  1953. May we be different.

  1954. Lord, we love you.

1955. We pray all these things in your son Jesus' name.

  1956. Amen.

1957. Hey, we are back here next week.

1958. There are some people with little blue

  1959. lanyards around their neck.

1960. They're part of our prayer team.

1961. Don't leave here without having someone

  1962. pray with you.

1963. Especially if you're in this issue of

1964. struggling about where you have your heart

  1965. focused.

1966. Who's on the throne of your life?

1967. What are you fearing as you walk into

1968. the classroom on Monday or into the

1969. boardroom or as you go on your business

1970. trip or if you do dinner with the

1971. extended family tonight or if you walk

1972. home into your house and it's divided

1973. or you have kids out of control?

1974. The passage here says that God,

1975. God is awesome and big enough for you to

  1976. trust him.

1977. That he wants you to do that.

1978. He wants to work in your life.

1979. But he's not going to force himself in

  1980. there.

1981. He wants you to surrender to him and

1982. allow him to do that in your life.

1983. And our hope and our prayer is that you

  1984. would do that.

1985. All of us, that we'd be a people with

1986. Christ at the center, fearing God and

1987. all of him and allowing him to change us

  1988. in Hong Kong.

1989. Father, we just thank you for this day.

1990. I thank you for my brothers and

  1991. sisters here.

1992. Again, I just thank you for this place

1993. that you've made available for us.

1994. And we pray and thank you for your

1995. spirit and for your word.

1996. And we pray, Holy Spirit, that you would

1997. change us, that you would come upon us,

1998. that you would convict us of sin, that you

1999. would convict us of idols, you would

2000. convict us of things that we've put on the

2001. throne of our life instead of you.

2002. And that we would surrender those things to

  2003. you.

2004. And that your power and your passion would

2005. flow through us and change us.

2006. And that we could trust you because you're

  2007. good.

2008. And Father, I thank you for my brothers and

2009. sisters because we do it in community.

2010. And we trust you to change us as a family.

2011. And so we lift up today, we lift up this

2012. week, we lift up Hong Kong, we lift up the

2013. leaders, we lift up the schools, we lift up all

2014. the things going around in the world.

2015. We know that all those things are numbered

2016. and counted and you control those things.

  2017. And we trust you.

2018. We pray these things in your Son, Jesus

2019. Christ's holy and beautiful name.

  2020. Amen.

  2021. God bless you.

2022. We'll see you back here next week.

  2023. Amen.

  2024. Amen.

  2025. Amen.

  2026. Amen.

  2027. Amen.

  2028. Amen.

  2029. Amen.

  2030. Amen.

  2031. Amen.

  2032. Amen.

  2033. Amen.

  2034. Amen.

  2035. Amen.

  2036. Amen.

  2037. Amen.

  2038. Amen.

  2039. Amen.

  2040. Amen.
