  2. And if this is your first time or your millionth time,

  3. we are glad that you're here to worship the Lord with us. And we have a very special day.

  4. So I thought, I need some help. I need some helpers. And so if you're a kid,

  5. can you come up here and help me for one second, please? Just come right here. All the kiddos,

  6. come on. You don't have to cling to me, but just sit right there, okay?

  7. All the kids, come on, guys.

  8. Oh. Hey. Okay, guys, I need your help, okay? So can someone tell me what today is besides Sunday?

  9. Father's Day. Father's Day. And what does Father's Day mean?

  10. Father's Day. To do what now?

  11. Father's Day means give a present to your daddy. That is so good. So how many of you guys are going

  12. to take your dad out to lunch today and be nice to him? How many of you guys are going to give

  13. your dad a brand new watch today? Wow. What great kids. Hey, so what I want to do is I need your help.

  14. We have these special gifts made for our dads. And so I'm going to have all the dads and all the men in the church,

  15. all the men in the church stand up. Okay, so all the men in the church stand up now.

  16. Kids, push your, come on, Albert. You're a man. Stand up. Okay. All the men stand up. Okay, guys.

  17. Hey, guys, listen to me. Look at me. I need your help. Can you help me pray for the dads? Okay?

  18. So I'm going to pray, and you just pray right after me, okay? Okay? Let's pray.

  19. Dear God, thank you for our dads. Guard their heart. Help them to love you. Help us to obey them.

  20. Help us to obey them. We love you. Amen. Okay, guys, this is what I need to do. I need all the kids

  21. to take these cards. Men, stand up still. Take these cards, and I want you to hand them out to any man

  22. standing up and say, Happy Father's Day. Thank you so much. Okay? Thank you. So hand it to your daddy

  23. and hand it to people. Here you go. Here you go. Just go hand them out. Just hand them out to your dads.

  24. Wow, crazy chaos. Okay. Everybody got them? There you go. Here you go, Willow. Good job, guys.

  25. And after the dads get their card, you can sit down. Okay. Pass them out. Okay. Here you go.

  26. Take them. Take them. Okay. Good. There you go. Okay. Go give them to your dads.

  27. And after that, kids, you are dismissed. Watermark kids. So every daddy standing up,

  28. make sure you give them a card. Okay. After that, Watermark kids are dismissed,

  29. and youth are dismissed with Eric.

  30. The scripture reading today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12. Please follow along in your

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  31. bulletin.

  32. Someone in the crowd said to him,

  33. Teacher, tell my brother to divide the family inheritance with me.

  34. But he said to him, Man, who appointed me to be a judge or arbitrator over you?

  35. Then he said to them, Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed.

  36. For not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions.

  37. And he told them a parable, saying,

  38. The land of a rich man was very productive.

  39. And he began reasoning to himself, saying,

  40. What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?

  41. Then he said,

  42. This is what I will do.

  43. I will tear down my barns and build larger ones.

  44. And there I will store all my grain and my goods.

  45. And I will say to my soul,

  46. Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come.

  47. Take your ease, eat, drink, and be merry.

  48. But God said to him,

  49. You fool, this very night your soul is required of you.

  50. And now who will own what you have prepared?

  51. So is the man who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.

  52. This is the reading of God's word.

  53. I got stuff.

  54. Good stuff.

  55. Happy stuff.

  56. Successful, sensational, recreational, relaxational stuff.

  57. Mac stuff.

  58. PC stuff.

  59. I stuff.

  60. Cool fashion.

  61. Cool fashion.

  62. Fast cash.

  63. Fast action.

  64. Rocket chips and chocolate chips.

  65. Stuff with crosses.

  66. Christian fishes.

  67. Stuff beyond my wildest wishes.

  68. And you can't take my stuff.

  69. My stuff is a needle that drops to the vinyl to start the party and spin the spiral.

  70. My stuff impressively, incessantly, illuminates my import.

  71. And my stuff is loud.

  72. It demands respect.

  73. And you can't neglect when my stuff says,

  74. I have arrived and this is what I'm all about.

  75. My stuff demands respect.

  76. It identifies me.

  77. And I identify with my stuff.

  78. My stuff is the needle that tattoos my skin, signifying the significance of who I am.

  79. You can't handle my stuff.

  80. I got stuff.

  81. I got stuff.

  82. Stuff.

  83. Stuff from my past.

  84. That follows me around like some run-down evangelist carnival caravan that keeps coming to town.

  85. In the amusement park dark.

  86. Saints from the shadows shout my shattered story.

  87. Selling success souvenirs.

  88. And soulful sideshows.

  89. Their slanted slogans solicit me.

  90. Slander me.

  91. Compel me.

  92. Tell me.

  93. Tell me fortunes that I regret.

  94. I can't forget.

  95. And surrendering or seeking grace.

  96. I surrender to the stuff spell.

  97. But it conjures no confession.

  98. No communion.

  99. Just a constant carousel of clamor.

  100. That casts out the quiet and the question so I don't have to hear my heart beat.

  101. My stuff is a ferris wheel that takes me to the top.

  102. Then brings me right back down again.

  103. I spin and I turn and I want off.

  104. But the ride never stops.

  105. I got stuff.

  106. I got stuff.

  107. My stuff is the elevator to the penthouse floor.

  108. Sometimes no matter what button I push.

  109. I can't seem to open the door.

  110. You can't handle my stuff.

  111. You can't handle my stuff.

  112. My stuff is the needle that injects my vein.

  113. And it's warm like a fever.

  114. And it spreads like a stain.

  115. And it itches.

  116. And I scratch until it burns like a blaze.

  117. But all I have is this nothing.

  118. And I can't stop the flame.

  119. I can't stop the flame.

  120. I can't stop the flame.

  121. I can't stop the flame.

  122. I can't.

  123. I can't.

  124. I can't.

  125. I got stuff.

  126. I can't handle my stuff.

  127. You can't take my stuff.

  128. You can't take my stuff.

  129. Can you?

  130. Can you?

  131. Take my stuff?

  132. I kind of feel like I just need to say amen after that.

  133. Finish our time.

  134. We're talking about stuff.

  135. We're talking about life.

  136. If you've been with us for any amount of time, you've heard us talk about stories that we're

  137. all writing out and living out our story right now.

  138. If you've been here for any amount of time, you hear us talking about journeys.

  139. We're all on a journey.

  140. And the interesting thing about this journey is that we're all following someone or something

  141. or stuff.

  142. Some of us are following Ben Bernanke.

  143. Some of us are following Jamie Dimon.

  144. Some of us are following Li Kai-shing.

  145. Some of us are following Warren Buffett.

  146. Some of us are trying to follow Christ.

  147. But the stuff crowds out our life.

  148. And we don't know how to handle it.

  149. We're continuing the story of stuff and the journey.

  150. Last week we talked about being in a minefield.

  151. We talked about that we walk into a minefield.

  152. And in this field there are things that can disable us and hurt us and cause us to be enslaved.

  153. Jesus talked last week about that thing as the leaven of the Pharisees, hypocrisy.

  154. We talked about wearing a mask, being different in different places and acting different ways

  155. because people expect you to act certain ways.

  156. And we said in the midst of all of that, we lose the gospel.

  157. We de-gospelize ourself.

  158. We're clinging to Christ and we're on this journey.

  159. And all of a sudden we break free and we cling on to position and power and material things.

  160. And we lose the power of the Holy Spirit.

  161. We lose the power of the gospel.

  162. As I was praying through this sermon today, I was reminded of a story.

  163. And it begins as all good stories begin.

  164. And the interesting thing about this story is I think that if we're honest,

  165. we see it lived out every day in our life.

  166. We see it lived out every day in people's lives all around us.

  167. And this story begins like every story should begin.

  168. Come on.

  169. How does every story begin?

  170. Once upon a time.

  171. Once upon a time in Hong Kong, there lived a very important man or woman.

  172. I'm just going to say a man.

  173. He routinely logged in 12 to 14 hours of work a day.

  174. And sometimes on weekends, he went to Stanford and Thunderbird and then the Harvard School of Management.

  175. He got top honors.

  176. He qualified in his chosen field and decided to broaden his horizons by joining every professional institute he could.

  177. Indeed, he joined a number of boards and he was on the directors.

  178. He read books on Genghis Khan and management and how to swim with the sharks.

  179. And even when he wasn't working, his mind wandered back to his job,

  180. which not was his occupation but became his preoccupation.

  181. He found a 40-hour work week such a good idea that he often did it twice.

  182. His wife tried to slow him down to remind him that he had a family.

  183. He knew they were not as close as they had once been.

  184. He had not intended for them to drift away.

  185. It just seemed that she wanted time from him.

  186. And that was just something that he didn't have to give because he gave it all at the office.

  187. He was vaguely aware of his kids that they were growing up and they were missing him.

  188. From time to time, his kids would complain about the books that he wasn't reading to them

  189. and the games he wasn't going to them and all of these things.

  190. And he would get angry and he says, I'm doing it all for you.

  191. Just wait.

  192. Soon it's all going to get better and our future will be assured.

  193. One day his chief operations officer came to him and he said,

  194. you're not going to believe this but business is booming.

  195. I mean it's out of control.

  196. We can't keep up with it.

  197. It's a miracle.

  198. But with the present technology that we have, we can't keep in the market.

  199. We can't make a killing.

  200. So he put the company through a technological revolution.

  201. The buzzword was 24-7 connectivity.

  202. There was phones everywhere in the bathrooms and in the conference rooms

  203. and everybody was connected by Wi-Fi, BlackBerrys, iPhones.

  204. As he sat at his computer that night rearranging the company,

  205. he had overlooked one microscopic detail.

  206. He had overlooked an artery that had once been so supple,

  207. as supple as a blade of grass,

  208. but now was dry and brittle like cement.

  209. For more than a century,

  210. his heart had been pumping 70 milliliters of blood with every contraction,

  211. 14,000 pints each day, 100,000 beats in 24 hours,

  212. all of this happening without him ever having to send a memo

  213. or giving a reminder or a performance review.

  214. Now it skipped a beat,

  215. and it skipped another beat,

  216. and a third, and he grasped his chest,

  217. and he breathed for air,

  218. and for a moment he was given the gift of blinding clarity.

  219. Even though he sat on the top of hundreds of organizational charts,

  220. it turned out that he wasn't in control of his own pulse.

  221. Funny thing, he was thinking as he was dying,

  222. hundreds of people on multiple continents would listen and heed every word,

  223. but now a few ounces of hardened muscle in his heart wouldn't obey him.

  224. His wife woke up at 3 a.m.,

  225. and she was still looking next to herself,

  226. and she saw that he wasn't in bed,

  227. and she went downstairs to drag him up out of bed,

  228. and she saw that he was laying in front of the computer,

  229. head on the desk,

  230. and she just yelled to herself,

  231. this is ridiculous.

  232. It's like I'm being married to a child.

  233. He would rather fall asleep in front of the screen than come to bed.

  234. She touched him on the shoulder to wake him up,

  235. and he didn't respond,

  236. and his skin was eerily cold.

  237. She quickly dialed 999,

  238. and when the paramedics got there,

  239. it was too late,

  240. and they told her that he had died of a massive heart attack.

  241. His death was a major story in the financial community.

  242. The obituary appeared in the South China Morning Post,

  243. and then the tattler.

  244. It was too bad that he was dead,

  245. because he would have loved to hear what people were saying about him.

  246. They came to the funeral because of his prominence in the community.

  247. People filed past his open casket,

  248. and they commented on how peaceful he looked.

  249. Death has a way of doing that,

  250. of making us look peaceful.

  251. Death is nature's way of saying you're working too hard.

  252. You need to slow down.

  253. And as they followed past,

  254. they asked the same question that everybody always asks

  255. when someone rich dies,

  256. how much money did he leave?

  257. He left it all.

  258. We always leave it all.

  259. People got up to eulogize him.

  260. Mostly they talked about his accomplishments,

  261. because everyone knew about him,

  262. but no one really knew him.

  263. He was one of the leading entrepreneurs of the day.

  264. He was an innovator in technology.

  265. He was a man of principles.

  266. He never cheated on his taxes.

  267. He never cheated on his expense sheet.

  268. He never cheated on his wife.

  269. He was a pillar of the community.

  270. Everybody knew that.

  271. Everybody saw how great he was.

  272. He was an amazing networker.

  273. This guy could network everything.

  274. He never cheated on his side.

  275. He never cheated on his side.

  276. They commissioned a large marble monolith

  277. by his grave,

  278. and on it they wrote visionary,

  279. innovator, leader, entrepreneur.

  280. And at the top of the monolith,

  281. they wrote this huge word, success.

  282. But when it was dark and no one was around,

  283. the angel of God was sent to the cemetery.

  284. Unseen and unheard,

  285. the angel made its way past all of the monuments,

  286. until it came to his wonderful monument.

  287. And in the quiet,

  288. the angel traced with his finger

  289. on the monolith

  290. the words that God had used to describe him.

  291. F-O-O-L.

  292. Fool.

  293. You fool.

  294. This night,

  295. your soul will be required of you.

  296. As I think of this story,

  297. I just think maybe there's a parallel going on

  298. with this parable

  299. of what's happening in Europe,

  300. in the States,

  301. in Asia.

  302. We're so busy

  303. accumulating stuff

  304. for ourselves

  305. that we haven't taken time off

  306. to think about God

  307. and to thank him

  308. for where we are.

  309. I guess a challenge this morning for me

  310. and for all of us

  311. as we think about this parable

  312. is

  313. am I,

  314. are we

  315. making efforts

  316. to be richer towards God

  317. or are we just interested

  318. in getting more

  319. stuff?

  320. Chapter 12,

  321. Jesus is talking to his disciples

  322. in this very interesting passage

  323. because as he's giving this amazing sermon,

  324. this young man stands up

  325. and he yells out a question

  326. which has nothing to do

  327. with the sermon.

  328. Meaning,

  329. you wonder what people are thinking.

  330. Here,

  331. he's the greatest communicator

  332. of all time

  333. and even the people

  334. in the congregation

  335. aren't clued in

  336. to his words.

  337. It kind of gives me comfort

  338. as a pastor

  339. because I wonder sometimes

  340. what you're thinking

  341. out there.

  342. Does all he own

  343. is blue shirts?

  344. Well,

  345. at least his belt

  346. and his shoes

  347. are matched today.

  348. But the guy comes

  349. and he asks Jesus

  350. this incredible question

  351. and I want to take

  352. these couple minutes

  353. just to look at it

  354. because I think

  355. there's so much more

  356. we need to learn

  357. from this passage

  358. and it's found

  359. in verse 13

  360. through 21

  361. of Luke 12.

  362. It's interesting

  363. when he asks

  364. this question,

  365. Jesus never answers

  366. the question

  367. that people ask.

  368. He always answers

  369. the problem

  370. that's in their heart.

  371. in our heart.

  372. And so this guy

  373. asked this question

  374. if you look at it

  375. in your bulletin

  376. this is,

  377. I'm going to look

  378. through this really quickly

  379. and we're going to make,

  380. we're going to go through this.

  381. I want to run through this

  382. and we'll make some points

  383. about the text

  384. and see what we have

  385. to learn here.

  386. I want to share with you

  387. some things

  388. that I've been learning

  389. these last couple weeks

  390. and then I want to do

  391. a quick exercise

  392. and then you're dismissed

  393. for Father's Day.

  394. So in verse 13

  395. someone in a crowd

  396. yelled out to him,

  397. teacher,

  398. tell my brother

  399. to divide the family

  400. inheritance with me.

  401. Someone,

  402. we don't know who it is,

  403. he yells out,

  404. rabbi,

  405. respected person,

  406. tell my brother

  407. to divide the inheritance

  408. with me.

  409. Those listening

  410. would have known

  411. exactly what had happened.

  412. The father had died

  413. and the boy yelling out

  414. was the younger son

  415. and the older son

  416. who got two-thirds

  417. of the inheritance

  418. would always divide up

  419. the inheritance

  420. when it was his time

  421. but he hadn't done it yet

  422. and the younger son

  423. was frustrated

  424. because he wanted his stuff.

  425. It's interesting

  426. in this passage,

  427. he doesn't ask God

  428. to fix the relationship

  429. between him

  430. and the older brother.

  431. He doesn't say,

  432. God,

  433. our relationship is broken.

  434. We're arguing

  435. with each other.

  436. I know that we've never

  437. seen this happen

  438. in Hong Kong

  439. and you've never seen

  440. this happen in your life

  441. when someone dies

  442. and then everybody

  443. starts arguing

  444. over the stuff

  445. but it happened

  446. in Jesus' day

  447. and the guy

  448. doesn't ask Jesus

  449. to fix the relationship.

  450. He doesn't ask

  451. to mend hearts.

  452. He doesn't say,

  453. hey, check me

  454. because maybe my motives

  455. are wrong.

  456. Maybe something's

  457. going on here.

  458. Can you bring me

  459. back to my brother?

  460. All he asks Jesus

  461. is I want my stuff.

  462. Give me my stuff.

  463. In verse 14,

  464. Jesus says,

  465. man,

  466. who appointed me

  467. a judge

  468. or arbitrated over you?

  469. It's a very strong word.

  470. In the Middle Eastern,

  471. everybody listening

  472. would have been freaking out

  473. because it was like

  474. Jesus was disgusted

  475. with this guy.

  476. And so he doesn't even

  477. call him by name

  478. even though he would have

  479. known his name

  480. because he knows everything

  481. but he addresses him

  482. just as a man.

  483. And then he shares

  484. in verse 15,

  485. beware,

  486. pay attention,

  487. understand,

  488. learned about,

  489. stay away from,

  490. be on your guard,

  491. always be constant,

  492. active,

  493. diligent,

  494. look around

  495. of every form.

  496. There's more than one form.

  497. There's position,

  498. there's power,

  499. there's possession

  500. of greed,

  501. coveting,

  502. wanting things that aren't yours,

  503. wanting more than you need,

  504. wanting a surplus

  505. that's not healthy.

  506. Beware of these things

  507. because not even

  508. when one of you

  509. has an abundance

  510. does his life

  511. consist

  512. of these things.

  513. Jesus looks

  514. at the guy's heart.

  515. He looks

  516. at our heart

  517. and he says,

  518. you know,

  519. you have a problem

  520. and your problem

  521. is greed.

  522. You have a problem

  523. and your problem

  524. is coveting.

  525. And it's interesting

  526. because greed

  527. and coveting

  528. is so subtle,

  529. it's so behind the scenes.

  530. No one has ever

  531. come to me

  532. and confessed,

  533. you know,

  534. I have a problem

  535. with greed.

  536. Can you pray for me?

  537. I've had people say,

  538. I've had a problem

  539. with my wife,

  540. I have a problem

  541. with my anger,

  542. I have a problem

  543. with materialism,

  544. kind of,

  545. but I have a problem

  546. with these other things,

  547. but never I have

  548. a problem with greed.

  549. But the scripture

  550. talks about it

  551. over and over

  552. and I think the thing

  553. that's scary

  554. about greed

  555. and hypocrisy

  556. is if we walk

  557. into that minefield,

  558. if we go down

  559. that road,

  560. we start living out

  561. a life that's hypocritical.

  562. And so Jesus

  563. is so concerned

  564. about this

  565. and he says,

  566. be careful of this,

  567. beware of this,

  568. it's going to destroy you.

  569. It's the tenth commandment,

  570. thou shall not covet.

  571. It's the loving of stuff,

  572. it's the hoarding of stuff.

  573. If I were to pick

  574. one sin

  575. that I would say

  576. is probably

  577. the chief sin,

  578. I would probably

  579. say it's greed

  580. and coveting.

  581. I mean,

  582. think about it.

  583. It's the sin

  584. that got the angels

  585. kicked out of heaven.

  586. They wanted to be like God,

  587. they wanted the things

  588. of God,

  589. they wanted to know

  590. and act like God

  591. and they got kicked out of the,

  592. it was a sin

  593. that got Adam and Eve

  594. kicked out of the garden.

  595. They wanted to be like God,

  596. they wanted to have

  597. the things of God,

  598. they wanted to have

  599. the knowledge of God

  600. and it seems like

  601. from that time on

  602. it's been the sin

  603. that causes quarrels,

  604. wars,

  605. strife,

  606. division,

  607. envy,

  608. disputes,

  609. jealousy,

  610. hatred.

  611. We can covet a lot of things,

  612. we can be greedy

  613. about a lot of things,

  614. the passage says that,

  615. many things be careful of.

  616. We can be coveted

  617. about possessions,

  618. about stuff.

  619. We can be greedy

  620. about positions,

  621. titles and jobs

  622. and offices,

  623. I want those things.

  624. We can be greedy

  625. about power.

  626. In the book of Romans,

  627. when Paul looked

  628. at his life,

  629. he looked at his life

  630. outwardly

  631. and he said,

  632. look at me,

  633. I'm perfect.

  634. I'm a Jew of Jews,

  635. I've kept all the requirements,

  636. I keep all the laws,

  637. I've done everything.

  638. But in Romans 7,

  639. he looks at his heart.

  640. He doesn't look outwardly

  641. but he looks inwardly

  642. like God calls us to.

  643. And he looks at his heart

  644. and he goes,

  645. I have a problem.

  646. And this problem is

  647. that I covet.

  648. I see things

  649. that other people have

  650. and I want those things

  651. and all of these things

  652. are coming into my world

  653. and Paul realizes

  654. that sin has invaded his life

  655. and has changed him.

  656. Ultimately,

  657. greed and coveting

  658. is an attempt

  659. to find satisfaction

  660. and happiness

  661. and ultimate meaning

  662. in things that are temporary

  663. instead of God.

  664. it seems like

  665. when we do that,

  666. we're walking along

  667. as Christians

  668. and we're attached

  669. to the gospel

  670. and the power

  671. of the Holy Spirit

  672. and all of a sudden

  673. we just kind of

  674. de-gospelize

  675. or we decouple

  676. and we say,

  677. no,

  678. I'm not going to trust

  679. in that anymore,

  680. I'm going to trust

  681. in my money.

  682. Or no,

  683. I'm not going to trust

  684. in that anymore,

  685. I'm going to trust

  686. in my position.

  687. And as we head down

  688. that path,

  689. the scripture says

  690. that we become slaves

  691. to the things

  692. that we really want

  693. and we desire.

  694. Does anybody have a problem

  695. with coveting

  696. and greed in here?

  697. Let me ask a couple questions.

  698. Are you content

  699. where you're at?

  700. Financially,

  701. location,

  702. your job.

  703. I mean,

  704. as you look at your life

  705. right now,

  706. do you think

  707. that this present condition

  708. is the best condition

  709. you could be in?

  710. Are you content

  711. with where God has you?

  712. I mean,

  713. could you say to God

  714. right now,

  715. God,

  716. you have me

  717. in the best place possible.

  718. I mean,

  719. I cannot imagine

  720. any other better thing,

  721. God,

  722. you've had me

  723. in exactly the best place.

  724. With my family,

  725. with my finances,

  726. with my job,

  727. with my location,

  728. with my house,

  729. with my car.

  730. God,

  731. you have me

  732. exactly where I need to be.

  733. Or would you say,

  734. like me,

  735. man,

  736. if I were God,

  737. I would do things

  738. a little differently.

  739. I'd probably get

  740. a 20% more raise

  741. and drive a little nicer car

  742. and I don't know

  743. about this house,

  744. maybe I should own it

  745. instead of renting it

  746. because I'm just

  747. wasting all this money.

  748. That's just me.

  749. Do you rejoice

  750. when your friend

  751. and your neighbor

  752. prospers?

  753. When your friend

  754. gets something

  755. that you don't have

  756. but you want,

  757. can you say,

  758. man,

  759. I'm so excited

  760. for them.

  761. I'm so excited

  762. that their family

  763. has got it together.

  764. I'm so excited

  765. that that husband

  766. loves his wife

  767. and spends time

  768. with them.

  769. I'm so excited

  770. that that wife

  771. respects her husband.

  772. I'm so excited

  773. that those kids,

  774. they got into Harvard

  775. finally and that's,

  776. that's just amazing.

  777. I'm so excited

  778. for them.

  779. I mean,

  780. I want those things

  781. but I'm just,

  782. I'm just really glad

  783. they got that new iPad

  784. and that new Mac

  785. PowerBook

  786. that you can bend

  787. like that.

  788. That's really cool

  789. but I'm really excited

  790. they got it.

  791. Can you say that?

  792. Or do you say,

  793. I need to go buy

  794. that really cool

  795. Mac PowerBook

  796. before they see

  797. that I don't have it

  798. so they just assume

  799. that I already have it too

  800. and then we're both cool.

  801. Do you want

  802. what you have?

  803. Now be very careful

  804. this is gonna,

  805. this is gonna take

  806. some brain cells,

  807. okay?

  808. Do you want

  809. what you have

  810. is not having

  811. what you want.

  812. I know that sounds

  813. like a country western song.

  814. I want what I have,

  815. I want what I don't have

  816. but do you want

  817. what you have

  818. right now?

  819. Or do you wanna have

  820. what you want

  821. for the future?

  822. Are you generous

  823. with what you have?

  824. As you get more money,

  825. if you get a pays,

  826. if you get a bonus,

  827. do you think,

  828. oh how can I give this

  829. away to people?

  830. How can this go

  831. towards the church?

  832. How can this build up

  833. treasures in heaven?

  834. How can I help people

  835. with this money?

  836. Or do you think,

  837. well this is my

  838. great opportunity

  839. to finally get

  840. my car upgraded?

  841. Or this is a great

  842. opportunity for me

  843. to change my lifestyle

  844. because I deserve

  845. a better lifestyle

  846. because I've worked

  847. so hard for it.

  848. Are we generous

  849. with what God gives us?

  850. All these questions

  851. I ask myself

  852. all the time.

  853. And Jesus wants us

  854. to ask these things

  855. of us

  856. because he's worried

  857. that we're gonna walk

  858. down this road.

  859. That we're gonna walk

  860. into this minefield

  861. and this minefield

  862. is gonna enslave us

  863. and destroy us

  864. and change us

  865. and the mine

  866. that we're worried

  867. about stepping on today

  868. is greed

  869. and coveting.

  870. Are you following me?

  871. The rest of the passage,

  872. Jesus basically just says,

  873. here are some things

  874. you need to be aware of.

  875. If you walk down this path,

  876. you're gonna step on a mine.

  877. And we're gonna run through them.

  878. I wanna run through them

  879. with you right now.

  880. The first thing Jesus says

  881. in verse 16

  882. as you look at your bulletin,

  883. Jesus warns

  884. that we're heading

  885. into the minefield,

  886. that we're gonna become greedy,

  887. that we're gonna worry

  888. about coveting

  889. if we just focus

  890. on ourselves

  891. and not on God.

  892. Look at the passage.

  893. He told them a parable

  894. saying,

  895. the land of the rich man

  896. was very productive.

  897. Now remember,

  898. parables are stories.

  899. The word actually means

  900. to lay beside.

  901. So Jesus is talking

  902. to everybody

  903. and he lays out this story

  904. right in front of them

  905. and he says,

  906. okay, now take your life

  907. and lay your life down

  908. beside the story

  909. and compare

  910. and see how you're doing.

  911. And so he shares

  912. this first thing,

  913. this first warning sign

  914. as you walk

  915. into this minefield

  916. and he says,

  917. the guy of a rich man,

  918. his land was very,

  919. very productive

  920. and Jesus warns us,

  921. he says,

  922. you're gonna walk

  923. into the minefield

  924. when you forget

  925. to give credit

  926. for God

  927. for what's going on

  928. in your life.

  929. You read in the passage,

  930. the guy only thinks

  931. of himself

  932. and he thinks,

  933. I did this,

  934. I made this happen.

  935. He looks at the harvest

  936. and he says,

  937. all of this was because

  938. I was a great planter.

  939. But every farmer knows

  940. in farming

  941. that there's rain,

  942. there's hail,

  943. there's sun,

  944. there's locusts,

  945. there's timing,

  946. there's bacteria

  947. that get into the dirt.

  948. All of these things

  949. can change the crop.

  950. But the rich man says,

  951. I did this,

  952. it's me.

  953. I made it happen.

  954. Now I've gotten

  955. some really serious arguments

  956. sometimes with people

  957. as I talked about this

  958. and sometimes people

  959. get really offended.

  960. They go,

  961. I worked hard.

  962. I studied hard.

  963. I got into Harvard

  964. and I'm in

  965. where I am

  966. because of my work.

  967. I've done everything

  968. and that is what

  969. has brought me here.

  970. And I listen to them.

  971. I go,

  972. you're right.

  973. I worked hard too

  974. and I studied hard.

  975. But you know,

  976. that has nothing to do

  977. with what country

  978. I was born in.

  979. And that has nothing

  980. to do with what time

  981. I was born.

  982. Statistics tell us

  983. that if we were born

  984. one year later

  985. or one year earlier

  986. or five years later

  987. or five years earlier

  988. for sure,

  989. we would not be

  990. where we are right now.

  991. We didn't choose

  992. our parents.

  993. We didn't choose

  994. what we would look like.

  995. We didn't choose

  996. that we would have eyes.

  997. And all of these things

  998. that God has given us,

  999. our mind,

  1000. our body,

  1001. where we're at,

  1002. all of these things

  1003. have brought us

1004. where we are right now.

  1005. But the farmer

  1006. looks at that

  1007. and he goes,

  1008. no, it's me.

  1009. I did it.

1010. I made it all happen.

  1011. I took a group

  1012. of students

  1013. when I was living

  1014. in China

  1015. to an orphanage.

  1016. And it was interesting

  1017. to see their reaction

  1018. when we walked

  1019. into the orphanage.

  1020. And we were playing

  1021. with the kids

1022. and several of the kids

  1023. had nothing wrong

  1024. with them

  1025. except for like

  1026. a little spot

  1027. on their cheek,

  1028. a little birthmark.

1029. And one of the guys

  1030. looked at this orphan

  1031. with that little birthmark,

  1032. that little physical scar

  1033. on him

1034. and he started to cry

  1035. and he ran out

  1036. of the room.

  1037. And I caught up

  1038. with him

  1039. and I said,

  1040. what's going on?

  1041. And he goes,

  1042. I realize

  1043. that the only reason

  1044. I'm here

  1045. right now

  1046. studying

  1047. in this university

  1048. is because

  1049. I wasn't born

  1050. with a mark

  1051. on my face.

  1052. Because if I had

  1053. any imperfection,

  1054. my parents

  1055. would have sent me

  1056. to the orphanage.

  1057. I have a good friend,

  1058. he shares his testimony

  1059. and he talks about

  1060. how when his parents,

1061. he was in his mother's stomach

1062. and one of the tests

  1063. came back

1064. later in stage of life

  1065. and it said

  1066. there was a 50% chance

1067. that he was going to have

  1068. an abnormality,

  1069. genetic,

1070. and that he would never

  1071. be able to survive

  1072. in the real world.

  1073. And the doctors

  1074. encouraged

  1075. and encouraged

  1076. and encouraged

  1077. his parents

  1078. to abort him.

  1079. And his parents,

  1080. which is amazing,

  1081. they weren't Christ followers

  1082. but they said,

  1083. we believe that

  1084. for some reason

  1085. we have this child

  1086. and we're going to

  1087. keep this child

  1088. and they kept him

  1089. and he was born

  1090. perfectly normal.

  1091. For some of us,

  1092. the only reason

  1093. we're here right now

  1094. is because the doctors

  1095. read our medical charts

  1096. right,

  1097. no abnormality

  1098. came back

  1099. in the blood work

  1100. and our parents

  1101. decided to keep us

  1102. instead of abort us.

  1103. But the farmer

  1104. doesn't know that.

  1105. The farmer thinks

  1106. it's all about him.

  1107. He did it all

  1108. and what Jesus

1109. is trying to tell us

1110. is if you run down

  1111. that road,

  1112. you're going to get

  1113. in trouble

  1114. because you're going

  1115. to become greedy

  1116. and you're going

  1117. to become lost.

  1118. He warns us

  1119. in verse 17,

  1120. again,

  1121. be careful.

  1122. The man began

  1123. reasoning to himself.

  1124. He's all by himself.

  1125. Everyone listening

  1126. would have been

  1127. freaking out

  1128. because he's all

  1129. by himself

  1130. and everyone in that

  1131. culture was communal.

  1132. He said to himself,

  1133. I shall do this

1134. and I will do that

  1135. and no place

  1136. to store my crops

  1137. and then he said

1138. this is what I will do.

1139. I will tear down my barns

1140. and I'll build larger ones

  1141. and they'll store

  1142. all my grains

  1143. and my goods

1144. and Jesus warns us again.

  1145. He says be careful

  1146. when you separate yourself

  1147. from other people.

  1148. Be careful

  1149. when you separate yourself

  1150. from God

  1151. because when you start

  1152. thinking that ownership

  1153. is yours

  1154. and you're not a steward,

  1155. you're in trouble

  1156. and you're going

  1157. to become greedy

  1158. Jesus is warning us

  1159. and he's warning

  1160. the audience

  1161. that he's teaching to

1162. that it's not our stuff,

  1163. it's not our crop,

  1164. it's not our barn,

  1165. it's not our house,

  1166. it's not our car,

1167. it's not our bank account.

1168. At least five more times

1169. in the Gospel of Luke

  1170. he's going to talk

1171. about these exact same things

1172. and he's going to say

  1173. the only reason

1174. you have what you have

1175. is because God gave it to you.

  1176. I read this passage

  1177. and I thought wow

1178. this is kind of like

1179. the typical Hong Kong lifestyle,

  1180. isn't it?

1181. I mean you think about it,

1182. many of us in Hong Kong

  1183. we want to improve

  1184. our lifestyle.

  1185. We want to increase

  1186. our wealth,

  1187. we find more ways

  1188. to improve our lifestyle,

  1189. we find more ways

  1190. to enjoy ourselves,

1191. we want to store up wealth,

1192. we want to store up stuff

1193. so that we can enjoy them

  1194. when we're old.

  1195. We're always planning

  1196. for the future,

  1197. we're making good investments

  1198. in stocks

  1199. and insurance

  1200. and wine

  1201. and property.

  1202. You notice this guy,

  1203. he's not yelled at

  1204. or criticized

1205. for being a good planner

1206. because the Bible wants us

1207. to plan for our future

  1208. but what the guy

  1209. is criticized for

1210. is that he leaves God

  1211. out of the plans.

  1212. He says,

1213. I'm going to do it,

  1214. I can do it.

  1215. In verse 19,

  1216. Jesus goes on

1217. and he tells his audience

  1218. and he tells us,

1219. I will say to my soul,

  1220. in Greek and Hebrew,

  1221. he's actually saying myself,

  1222. self,

  1223. you have many goods

1224. laid up for many years

  1225. to come.

  1226. Take your ease,

  1227. eat,

  1228. drink,

  1229. and be merry.

  1230. I mean,

  1231. he's so busy

  1232. thinking about

  1233. his physical body.

  1234. We're so busy

  1235. thinking about

  1236. our physical body.

  1237. that we forget

  1238. our soul.

  1239. And Jesus warns him

  1240. and he warns us,

  1241. be careful,

  1242. be careful,

  1243. be careful

  1244. because your future

  1245. isn't in your control.

  1246. It's in God's control.

  1247. Finally,

  1248. in verse 20,

  1249. verse 21,

  1250. Jesus shares with us

  1251. and he shares

  1252. with his congregation.

1253. But God said to him,

  1254. you fool,

  1255. this very night

  1256. your soul

  1257. is required of you

  1258. and now

  1259. who will own

1260. what you have been prepared?

  1261. So is the man

  1262. who stores up treasure

  1263. for himself

  1264. and is not rich

  1265. towards God.

1266. All up until this point,

  1267. it's just been

  1268. the guy speaking.

  1269. I will do this,

  1270. I will do that,

1271. I will do these things.

1272. And all of a sudden,

  1273. God speaks

  1274. and he speaks

1275. in a very powerful way

  1276. and he calls him

  1277. a fool.

  1278. In scripture,

  1279. in the Bible,

  1280. a fool is anyone

  1281. who disbelieves God

  1282. or disregards

  1283. God's teaching.

  1284. And if you look

  1285. at this parable,

  1286. you realize,

  1287. finally,

1288. after all of his time,

  1289. the rich,

  1290. famous farmer

  1291. realizes that everything

  1292. isn't his.

  1293. his life's not his.

  1294. His stuff's not his.

  1295. His self's not his.

  1296. And actually,

  1297. the words

  1298. is required

  1299. is a banking term.

  1300. What Jesus is saying

  1301. is everything

1302. that's on loan to you,

  1303. margin call,

  1304. everything's back.

1305. Everything that I've given you,

  1306. I need it back.

  1307. And in this moment,

  1308. the guy realizes

1309. as he walks through life,

  1310. all those things

  1311. he was clinging on

  1312. for significance

  1313. and who he was

  1314. and to bring power

  1315. and people recognize him,

  1316. all of these things

  1317. that weren't really his,

1318. he has to give them back.

1319. And he's left with nothing.

  1320. I mean,

  1321. these are harsh words.

  1322. I understand it.

  1323. I mean,

1324. because the world would say

  1325. this guy was successful

  1326. and he was good

  1327. and he was famous,

1328. but when we look at Scripture,

1329. Jesus looks at this man

  1330. in verse 21

  1331. and he turns back

1332. to the man who yells out

  1333. at the very beginning

1334. and he says these words,

  1335. so is the man

  1336. who stores up treasure

  1337. for himself.

1338. He is not rich towards God.

  1339. He's living like a fool.

1340. Are we living like a fool today?

1341. Where are we storing up

  1342. our riches?

1343. What are we thinking about

1344. as we walk through life?

  1345. Are we thinking

1346. that it's me, me, me

  1347. who's did it?

  1348. Or do we think

  1349. God has brought me

  1350. to this place,

1351. God has given me sight,

1352. God has allowed me to hear,

1353. God has given me the health

1354. and he has allowed me

  1355. to be here?

  1356. Here's some thoughts

1357. I want to run through

  1358. really quickly.

  1359. These are things

1360. that I've been struggling with

1361. in the last couple weeks.

1362. I know I say it every time.

  1363. But yeah.

1364. My first thought is this.

1365. Life is a gift on loan.

1366. Each day is a gift

  1367. and everything we have

  1368. belongs to God.

  1369. It's a gift to be used,

  1370. enjoyed,

  1371. and returned.

1372. And when we start thinking

  1373. that we own it,

  1374. we're in trouble.

  1375. Number two,

1376. every moment we have a choice,

1377. are we going to live our life

  1378. for ourself

  1379. or towards God?

  1380. There's only two choices

  1381. in the Bible.

1382. And I know this might run

  1383. some of you away

  1384. because we hear

  1385. different gospels sometimes,

1386. but in the Bible it says

1387. we only have two choices.

1388. Are we going to live our lives

  1389. towards God

  1390. or towards ourself?

1391. Are we going to store up

  1392. treasures for ourselves

1393. or are we going to store up

  1394. treasures in heaven?

  1395. Both of these storings

  1396. involve trust.

  1397. Whenever you give something

  1398. to somebody

  1399. and they store it,

1400. you have to trust them.

  1401. You're trusting the bank,

  1402. you're trusting the institution,

  1403. you're trusting your banker,

1404. you're trusting your investment guy,

  1405. or you're trusting God.

  1406. But there's a huge element

  1407. of trust in there.

1408. And what this guy realizes

1409. is that storing up things

  1410. here on earth

  1411. ultimately failed him.

  1412. because the abundance

  1413. of our life

  1414. doesn't guarantee

  1415. our eternity.

  1416. Here's the question

  1417. I want to ask.

  1418. I've been very hesitant

  1419. to ask this.

  1420. If God were

  1421. an investment banker

1422. and he looks at your life

  1423. and he realizes

  1424. everything

  1425. that he's put

  1426. into your life,

  1427. money,

  1428. talents,

  1429. connections,

  1430. family,

  1431. health,

  1432. eyesight,

  1433. stopping that drunk car

  1434. from hitting you

  1435. when you should have

  1436. been wiped out.

  1437. God,

  1438. as an investment banker,

  1439. and the only return

  1440. God wants

  1441. in your life

  1442. is treasures in heaven.

  1443. Because that's

  1444. what the Bible says.

  1445. So God is

  1446. an investment banker.

  1447. He's invested

  1448. all these things

  1449. in your life.

  1450. Have we been

  1451. a good investment

  1452. for him?

  1453. I mean,

  1454. have we brought

  1455. the return

  1456. that an investment banker

  1457. would have expected?

  1458. Now this has nothing

1459. to do with our salvation,

  1460. right?

  1461. The gospel saves us.

  1462. We're not working

  1463. to earn our salvation.

  1464. We're already a child

  1465. of God.

  1466. We're walking with him.

  1467. That's the power

  1468. of the gospel.

  1469. But after that,

  1470. God continues

  1471. to build into us

  1472. and he continues

  1473. to invest into us

  1474. and he continues

  1475. to give to us.

  1476. And the question

1477. we have to ask ourselves

  1478. is,

1479. are we a good investment?

  1480. if the only thing

  1481. he expects

  1482. is treasures

  1483. stored in heaven?

  1484. Have we been

  1485. dealing with God's word?

  1486. Have we been

  1487. in community?

  1488. Have we been

  1489. giving and tithing

  1490. and helping people

  1491. less fortunate

  1492. than ourselves?

  1493. When we look

  1494. at our neighbors,

  1495. the two great commandments,

1496. love the Lord your God

  1497. with all your heart,

  1498. mind, and soul.

  1499. Look at your neighbor,

  1500. love your neighbor

  1501. as yourself.

  1502. The guy asked,

  1503. who is my neighbor?

  1504. He said,

  1505. your neighbor,

  1506. is anybody in need?

  1507. Take care of them.

  1508. Heavenly investments.

  1509. Have we been

  1510. a good return

  1511. on those things?

  1512. The Bible says

  1513. that Jesus was rich

  1514. but for our sakes

  1515. he became poor.

  1516. He paid the debt

  1517. that we owed God.

  1518. the debt

  1519. that we owed God

  1520. was hell.

  1521. That's a bad debt.

  1522. And Jesus

  1523. paid that debt

  1524. on the cross

  1525. not by tithing

  1526. his blood.

  1527. Okay, I'll give

  1528. 20% now

  1529. and maybe 30% later.

  1530. He paid that debt

  1531. because he gave

  1532. everything.

  1533. He poured out

  1534. everything on the cross.

  1535. Jesus is incredibly rich

  1536. and generous

  1537. towards everyone

  1538. in this room.

  1539. And because he is

  1540. we can be also.

  1541. because he is

  1542. we have the freedom

  1543. to be also.

1544. As I look at this passage

1545. and I think of greed

  1546. and coveting

1547. I've been praying for us

1548. every day as a church.

1549. I'm praying that who we are

  1550. our identity

  1551. is not defined

  1552. by where we live

  1553. or where we meet.

1554. I'm praying that our identity

  1555. isn't defined

1556. by the clothes we wear

  1557. the barns or wealth

  1558. that we accumulate

  1559. where our kiddos

  1560. go to school

  1561. who we know

  1562. the group of people

  1563. we hang around

  1564. our business card

  1565. our family

1566. how big our business is

1567. how big our church is.

1568. I'm praying that our identity

  1569. isn't determined

  1570. by those things

  1571. because it is

  1572. we're walking

  1573. in this minefield

1574. and we're just as lost

  1575. as the rich farmer.

  1576. I'm praying as a church

  1577. and as individuals

  1578. that our identity

  1579. is rooted firmly

  1580. in God

1581. the gospel of Jesus Christ

  1582. the grace of God

  1583. that is poured out

  1584. on the cross.

1585. I want to do an exercise

  1586. very quickly.

  1587. At the very beginning

  1588. I handed out money

  1589. to about 20 people

  1590. in this congregation.

1591. Would you please stand up

  1592. and pass it out

  1593. to everybody?

1594. I know who you are

1595. so you can't run off

  1596. with it okay?

  1597. Every adult

1598. should get a one dollar bill.

  1599. Every adult.

  1600. Everybody take one.

  1601. Don't be a cutie.

  1602. Everybody take one.

  1603. I did a one dollar bill

  1604. because I'm an American

1605. yeah you can give me

  1606. a hard time.

1607. But also I felt like

  1608. I won't get arrested

1609. if I were an American

  1610. and I did this

  1611. I'd get arrested

  1612. because I wrote

  1613. on American money right?

  1614. So that's bad.

1615. So on the dollar bill

  1616. just do as quick

  1617. as you can buddy.

  1618. That's good.

  1619. On the back

  1620. of the dollar bill

1621. I want you to hold it up.

  1622. Everybody have one?

1623. If you don't have one

  1624. raise your hand.

1625. Dave you got some more?

1626. I want to give this to you.

  1627. Christina and I

1628. want to give this to you

  1629. as a gift.

  1630. Our hope is

1631. that you would put it

  1632. we have more money

  1633. any more money?

  1634. We have any more?

  1635. Any more?

  1636. Okay.

  1637. Charles you want to

  1638. hand it up?

  1639. Raise your hand.

  1640. Hold it up.

  1641. It's very interesting

  1642. isn't it?

  1643. Because on the back

  1644. it says in God

  1645. we trust.

  1646. But what we wrote

  1647. on there

  1648. was a Bible verse

  1649. Luke 12 21

  1650. So is the man

  1651. who stores up

  1652. treasure for himself

  1653. and is not rich

  1654. towards God.

  1655. You can stick this

  1656. in your Bible

  1657. please don't put it

  1658. in the offering box

  1659. to convert it

  1660. just to moff on.

  1661. Okay.

  1662. So don't do that.

  1663. But the reason

1664. I gave it to you

  1665. is I want it

  1666. you to take this

  1667. and think about it

  1668. as you go through

  1669. this day

  1670. and this week.

  1671. I mean this passage

  1672. tells us

  1673. that God

  1674. listen to me guys

  1675. this passage

  1676. tells us

  1677. that God

  1678. wants us

  1679. to enjoy life

  1680. but he doesn't

1681. want us to do it

  1682. a part of

  1683. a relationship

  1684. with him

  1685. and other people

  1686. around us.

  1687. this passage

  1688. tells us

  1689. that God

  1690. wants us

  1691. to have stuff

  1692. but he doesn't

  1693. want us

  1694. to worship it.

  1695. He doesn't want

  1696. it to become

  1697. our gods

  1698. he doesn't want us

  1699. to forget

  1700. that we're not owners

  1701. but we're stewards

  1702. and one day

  1703. there's going to be

  1704. a bell that rings

  1705. inside your head

  1706. your eyes are going

  1707. to close

  1708. and the next thing

  1709. you do

  1710. when you open up

  1711. your eyes

  1712. hopefully

  1713. is you're going

  1714. to see Jesus Christ

  1715. and you're going

  1716. to look around

  1717. and you're not

  1718. going to have

  1719. any of the stuff

  1720. that you had

  1721. on earth

  1722. with you.

  1723. The only thing

  1724. you're going

  1725. to have

  1726. in your new home

  1727. is the heavenly

  1728. treasures

  1729. that you sent

  1730. ahead.

  1731. That's it.

  1732. And this passage

  1733. tells us

  1734. that God

  1735. wants us

  1736. to have stuff

  1737. he wants us

  1738. to enjoy things

  1739. but he wants us

  1740. to remember

  1741. that it's not

  1742. ours

  1743. that ownership

  1744. is a myth

  1745. ownership

  1746. is a myth

  1747. even with our

  1748. kids

  1749. even with our

  1750. life

  1751. God gives it

  1752. to us

  1753. for a little

  1754. while to enjoy

  1755. and then one day

  1756. he's going to ask

  1757. for it back

  1758. and hopefully

  1759. we'll be with him

  1760. enjoying eternity.

  1761. This passage

  1762. tells us

  1763. that God

  1764. wants us

  1765. to plan

  1766. for our futures

  1767. but he wants

  1768. us to remember

  1769. that our future

  1770. isn't here

  1771. that our future

  1772. is in heaven

  1773. and that's

  1774. where he wants

  1775. us to store

  1776. our treasures

  1777. not here

  1778. but in heaven

  1779. mine too

  1780. Jesus says

  1781. be careful

  1782. you walking

  1783. down that road

  1784. everybody has

  1785. that problem

  1786. everybody has

  1787. that problem

  1788. is probably

  1789. the greatest

  1790. sin

  1791. no one wants

  1792. to talk

  1793. about it

  1794. because no one

  1795. wants to say

  1796. I'm greedy

  1797. they'd rather say

  1798. I look at pornography

  1799. or I'm a drunk

  1800. but they don't want

  1801. to say I'm greedy

  1802. but Jesus says

  1803. we all struggle

  1804. with it

  1805. and we need

  1806. to be careful

  1807. we need

  1808. to be careful

  1809. Father we just

  1810. thank you for this

  1811. day

  1812. I thank you

  1813. for your mercy

  1814. and your grace

  1815. in our life

  1816. we thank you

  1817. for your goodness

1818. and Father we thank you

  1819. for your word

  1820. that is living

  1821. and active

  1822. and never changes

  1823. and as we look

  1824. at this parable

  1825. of the rich farmer

  1826. we realize

  1827. that

  1828. that's us

  1829. if we're honest

  1830. we realize

  1831. that there's times

  1832. that we've forgotten

  1833. you

  1834. we realize

  1835. that there's times

  1836. that we've forgotten

  1837. community and fellowship

  1838. we realize

  1839. that there's times

  1840. we think this stuff

  1841. is ours

  1842. we realize

  1843. that there's times

  1844. that we think

  1845. that this is where

  1846. we store our treasures

  1847. and Father we just

  1848. come before you

  1849. and we just confess

  1850. and we repent

  1851. and we ask

  1852. your forgiveness

  1853. I know there are

  1854. people in here

  1855. even now

  1856. who haven't even

  1857. started the journey

  1858. with Christ

  1859. in our hope

  1860. what you heard

  1861. from this message

  1862. is that God

  1863. loves you

  1864. and he so desires

  1865. to have a relationship

  1866. with you

  1867. and our prayer

  1868. is that you would

  1869. stop having

  1870. relationships

  1871. with stuff

  1872. things that will

  1873. pass away

  1874. one day

  1875. and that you will

  1876. have it with

  1877. the eternal God

  1878. who you can enjoy

  1879. forever

  1880. and for the rest

  1881. of us

  1882. I just pray

  1883. Lord

  1884. as we walk

  1885. on this journey

  1886. and we walk

  1887. into these fields

  1888. and these struggles

  1889. that we would have

  1890. brothers and sisters

  1891. around us

  1892. who care enough

  1893. about us

  1894. to ask us questions

  1895. that we'd have

  1896. brothers and sisters

  1897. around us

  1898. who care enough

  1899. to pick us up

  1900. when we fall

  1901. and to point us

  1902. into the right direction

  1903. the direction of mercy

  1904. and direction of grace

  1905. and so Lord

1906. we just come before you

  1907. as your people

  1908. and we continue

  1909. to think

  1910. that your son

  1911. was so rich

  1912. and yet for us

  1913. he became poor

  1914. he paid the debt

1915. that we could never pay

  1916. so that we might

  1917. become rich

  1918. as members

  1919. of your family

  1920. help this gospel

  1921. message

  1922. permeate all

  1923. that we do

  1924. may we be generous

  1925. and gracious

  1926. because we serve

  1927. a God who is

  1928. we love you

  1929. amen
