  1. The scripture reading today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. And he said to his disciples,

  4. For this reason I say to you,

  5. Do not worry about your life as to what you will eat,

  6. nor for your body as to what you will put on.

  7. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.

  8. Consider the ravens, for they neither sow nor reap.

  9. They have no storeroom nor barn, and yet God feeds them.

  10. How much more valuable you are than the birds.

  11. And which of you, by worrying, can add a single hour to his lifespan?

  12. If then you cannot do even a very little thing,

  13. why do you worry about other matters?

  14. Consider the lilies, how they grow.

  15. They neither toil nor spin.

  16. But I tell you, not even Solomon, in all his glory,

  17. clothed himself like one of these.

  18. But if God so clothes the grass of the field,

  19. which is alive today, and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace,

  20. how much more will he clothe you, you men of little faith?

  21. And do not seek what you will eat and what you will drink,

  22. and do not keep worrying.

  23. For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek.

  24. But your Father knows that you need these things,

  25. but seek his kingdom, and these things will be added to you.

  26. Do not be afraid, little flock,

  27. for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.

  28. Sell your possessions and give to charity.

  29. Make yourself money belts, which do not wear out.

  30. An unfailing treasure in heaven,

  31. where no thief comes nor moth destroys.

  32. For where your treasure is, there your heart will also be.

  33. This is the reading of God's word.

  34. You may be seated.

  35. How you guys doing today?

  36. Let's try it one more time, please, please.

  37. Is everybody okay?

  38. Yeah.

  39. Okay.

  40. It's very quiet.

  41. Wow, we have...

  42. If you're here for the first time in this room,

  43. we haven't been here for like two weeks,

  44. so it's kind of weird being back in here to see everybody,

  45. and it's just interesting to be here as opposed to the gymnasium.

  46. I still don't know what I think about the gym,

  47. but God keeps providing those places for us,

  48. which is amazing.

  49. So we are...

  50. If this is your first time here,

  51. and you haven't been here the last two weeks,

  52. we're stuck in a landmine field.

  53. I talked about two weeks ago about being in Cambodia and walking through a landmine in 1989 or so,

  54. and walking through the minefield.

  55. And we're in Luke 12,

  56. and we're talking about the minefield that we walk through in our lives.

  57. And we said that two weeks ago that one of the minds that Jesus points out,

  58. one of the things that he doesn't want us to fall on or step in or enter into our life

  59. was the leaven of the Pharisees,

  60. which is hypocrisy.

  61. We talked about hypocrisy being this idea of fearing man more than we fear God,

  62. wearing a mask.

  63. And we talked about how we all struggle with that in our lives,

  64. in different places.

  65. Maybe not at church, but maybe at home.

  66. Maybe not at home, but maybe in the office.

  67. Maybe someplace that we all struggle with those things.

  68. Last week, we talked about a different minefield.

  69. We talked about the idea of covetousness and greed

  70. and how we view our stuff.

  71. And we asked some questions.

  72. If you weren't here last week, you missed it.

  73. We gave out $100 bills, U.S., to everybody.

  74. We gave out money, so you missed $100.

  75. It was amazing.

  76. But we wrote on those $100 bills.

  77. On the back of it, we wrote the passage, John 12, 21.

  78. We wrote, self or God?

  79. And the question was, what are we living for?

  80. What are we building up for?

  81. What are we investing in?

  82. Are we investing in ourself or in God?

  83. And then I asked this question,

  84. which people have been getting back to me a lot this week.

  85. I said this.

  86. I said, if God were a venture capitalist

  87. and he were to look at your life

  88. and everything that he invested in your life,

  89. money, time, health, where you were born,

  90. when you were born, connections,

  91. if he looked at all those things that he invested in your life

  92. and the only outcome that he was expecting

  93. were things in the kingdom of God,

  94. if he were to look at your life,

  95. were you or are you a good investment?

  96. Has God lost money on you?

  97. Or have you been a good investment for the kingdom of God?

  98. And this week, we're going to continue in this minefield

  99. in an area I think is probably the biggest mine.

  100. It is the biggest mine for me,

  101. so I'll just be really honest with you.

  102. And as I was thinking of this minefield,

  103. this story came to mind,

  104. and I want to read it for you.

  105. One day, an American businessman

  106. was at a pier of a small coastal Mexican village

  107. when a small boat with just one fisherman docked inside.

  108. Docked.

  109. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna.

  110. The American complimented the Mexican fisherman

  111. on the quality of the fish,

  112. and he asked how long it took for him to catch them.

  113. The fisherman replied,

  114. well, only a little while.

  115. The American then asked him,

  116. well, why didn't you stay out longer and catch more fish?

  117. And the fisherman said that he had enough

  118. to support his family's immediate needs.

  119. And the businessman said,

  120. well, what then do you do with the rest of your time?

  121. And the fisherman said,

  122. well, I sleep late.

  123. I fish a little.

  124. I play with my children.

  125. I take siesta with my wife, Maria.

  126. We walk around the village in the evenings

  127. where I drink wine.

  128. I play guitar with my amigos.

  129. I have a full and busy life, senor.

  130. I was going to do that in a Mexican accent,

  131. but it probably sounded like an Indian accent.

  132. So I just figured, forget it, okay?

  133. The businessman scoffed at him,

  134. and he said,

  135. no wonder you guys are such a mess down here.

  136. I was going to pick on the Harvard guys again,

  137. but I changed it,

  138. so I sent you to Stanford.

  139. I'm a Stanford MBA,

  140. and I can really help you.

  141. First, you should spend more time fishing,

  142. and with the proceeds,

  143. you should buy a bigger boat.

  144. Second, with the proceeds from the bigger boat,

  145. you should go back and buy several boats.

  146. Eventually, you'll have a fleet of fishing boats,

  147. like on that TV show.

  148. Then instead of just selling your catch to a middleman,

  149. you could sell directly to the processor.

  150. Before you know it,

  151. you'll eventually open up your own cannery down here.

  152. Then you control the product,

  153. the processing, and the distribution,

  154. and then the money would start to roll into your bank

  155. in ways you could never believe before.

  156. You then probably need to leave this small coastal village

  157. to someplace like Mexico City,

  158. or then to L.A.,

  159. and then eventually to New York,

  160. and there you would run your expanding multinational company.

  161. The fisherman asked,

  162. but senor,

  163. senor,

  164. how long will all this improvement take?

  165. The businessman replied,

  166. well, if you're lucky,

  167. probably 15 to 20 years,

  168. but in the end,

  169. it's all going to be worth it.

  170. The fisherman asked,

  171. but then what do I do, senor?

  172. The businessman laughed,

  173. well, this is the best part of all,

  174. because when you've gotten your company

  175. in this huge place,

  176. then you offer a stock offering

  177. for your amazing company,

  178. and you're going to sell your company stock in public,

  179. and you're going to become massively rich.

  180. You're going to make a buttload of money.

  181. You're going to be so rich,

  182. you're not going to believe it.

  183. Millions of dollars.

  184. Millions of dollars, senor?

  185. Wow.

  186. Then what?

  187. The businessman said,

  188. well, then,

  189. you can finally get to retire.

  190. You can move to a small coastal village,

  191. fishing,

  192. where you would sleep late,

  193. fish a little,

  194. play with your kids,

  195. take a siesta with your wife, Maria,

  196. stroll to the village on the evenings

  197. where you could sip wine

  198. and play the guitar with your amigo,

  199. the life you've always wanted.

  200. Uh-huh.

  201. Jesus talks a lot in this passage

  202. about the things that we worry about

  203. in the things of the world,

  204. and he warns us to not go after

  205. the things of the world

  206. the way that the world does.

  207. We're in chapter 12,

  208. and we're looking at this scene in your bulletin,

  209. and there are about 10,000 people

  210. surrounding Jesus.

  211. I mean, it is out of control.

  212. And in the midst of these conversations,

  213. because I'm seeing him talk about the Pharisees

  214. and talk about life and meaning and truth,

  215. all of a sudden, in verse 22,

  216. he turns to his disciples,

  217. and in a very gentle,

  218. in Greek, it's very gentle,

  219. very nurturing.

  220. He's not peeping them at all.

  221. He's not criticizing them.

  222. He's very gently, fatherly,

  223. coming to them,

  224. and he's offering a warning to them,

  225. a really personal warning,

  226. which I think most of us need to hear.

  227. In verse 22,

  228. the text says this,

  229. and he said to his disciples,

  230. for this reason I say to you,

  231. do not worry about your life

  232. as to what you will eat,

  233. nor for your body

  234. as to what you shall put on it.

  235. I talked last week about sometimes,

  236. you know, you get to hear

  237. 30 minutes of the sermon,

  238. and then you run away,

  239. and you forget it at dim sum,

  240. but God keeps hammering it into me

  241. these weeks,

  242. and usually Saturday night,

  243. I lay out on my bed

  244. the sermon sheets,

  245. and I come back,

  246. and I come back and forth,

  247. and read it,

  248. and think about it,

  249. and pray about it.

  250. Does this make sense?

  251. What's a good illustration there?

  252. What do I need to say here?

  253. And so last night,

  254. I was sitting in the bed,

  255. looking through the notes,

  256. praying through today,

  257. and Rachel,

  258. my 12-year-old,

  259. came in,

  260. and she said,

  261. you know,

  262. I had this present for you

  263. for Father's Day,

  264. but I forgot to give it to you.

  265. No lie.

  266. I said, okay, great.

  267. I really appreciate that.

  268. And so she brought this book to me,

  269. and it's the Don't Sweat It Guide for Dads.

  270. Stop stressing and worrying

  271. from getting in the way

  272. in what really matters in your life.

  273. And I looked at her and said,

  274. Rachel, do I worry a lot?

  275. She said, come on, Dad.

  276. You worry a ton.

  277. Not just working on it,

  278. but even from your kids, right?

  279. And so you get that.

  280. So in verse 23,

  281. Jesus says to his disciples,

  282. don't worry about your life,

  283. about what you're going to eat

  284. and what you're going to drink.

  285. He goes on in verse 25,

  286. and which of you,

  287. by worrying,

  288. again,

  289. and this idea of worry

  290. basically means

  291. to torment yourself,

  292. to be harsh.

  293. It actually has this imagery

  294. of you're running

  295. and dogs are chasing you

  296. and they're biting on you

  297. and they're tearing pieces

  298. away from you.

  299. And he's saying,

  300. don't worry.

  301. Don't be anxious.

  302. Don't worry about

  303. what you're going to care for.

  304. Don't be overly concerned

  305. about these things.

  306. Do not,

  307. verse 29,

  308. do not seek what you will eat

  309. and what you will drink

  310. and do not keep worrying.

  311. Verse 33,

  312. he says,

  313. do not be afraid,

  314. little flock.

  315. This is one of my favorite verses.

  316. For your father

  317. has gladly chosen

  318. to give you

  319. the kingdom of God.

  320. What I want to talk today

  321. really briefly

  322. in our time

  323. is just talking about

  324. worry

  325. and fear

  326. and anxiety

  327. and what it does

  328. to our lives

  329. and what it comes

  330. into our lives

  331. and how it affects us.

  332. And I realize

  333. as we talk about it,

  334. some of us don't even know

  335. why we worry,

  336. how to stop it,

  337. what it looks like

  338. in our life.

  339. And I want to look

  340. at this passage

  341. in other scriptures

  342. and see how God,

  343. how Christ addressed it

  344. in our life

  345. because I think

  346. it is a major thing for us.

  347. It's something

  348. that we need to

  349. get a handle on.

  350. So what I want to look at

  351. is I want to look at worry.

  352. What is it?

  353. What does the Bible

  354. say about it?

  355. Where?

  356. Where does worry

  357. come from in our lives

  358. and how?

  359. How do we know

  360. that we're walking

  361. into the landmine field?

  362. How do we know

  363. that we're going

  364. to start to worry?

  365. How do we prevent

  366. ourselves from worrying?

  367. The first thing

  368. just is worry.

  369. What is it?

  370. Now often

  371. when I think of worry

  372. it's often easier

  373. just to describe it

  374. and point to somebody

  375. and say they're worrying

  376. instead of giving

  377. a definition

  378. because sometimes

  379. definitions can be dry

  380. or hard to understand

  381. but in scripture

  382. it's talked about

  383. over and over

  384. and over again

  385. and pointed to

  386. in illustrations

  387. over and over

  388. and over again.

  389. In fact,

  390. I don't think we

  391. think of worry

  392. the way that

  393. Jesus thinks of worry

  394. because the Bible

  395. talks of worry

  396. in the same way

  397. that it talks

  398. about stealing.

  399. The Bible

  400. talks about worry

  401. in the same way

  402. that it talks

  403. about lying.

  404. The Bible

  405. talks about worry

  406. in the same way

  407. it talks about

  408. fornication.

  409. In fact,

  410. the Bible

  411. talks about worry

  412. more than it talks

  413. about any other

  414. thing at all.

  415. The passages

  416. say things like

  417. do not worry,

  418. do not fear,

  419. do not be anxious,

  420. and we walk

  421. through our life

  422. and we hear

  423. those things

  424. and we just wonder

  425. what exactly

  426. does that mean?

  427. The dictionaries

  428. I read over and over

  429. says that worry

  430. is our response

  431. to the unknown.

  432. Whether it's real

  433. or imagined,

  434. whether it's tangible

  435. or potential,

  436. often we worry

  437. about things

  438. that are ever

  439. coming true.

  440. One statistic

  441. I read

  442. said that only

  443. 8% of the things

  444. that we worry about

  445. actually happen

  446. in our lives.

  447. 8%.

  448. 50% of the things

  449. never happen

  450. because we're worried

  451. in the future.

  452. 30% of the things

  453. we worry about

  454. are things that we did

  455. in the future

  456. and we're worried

  457. about what's going

  458. to happen with us

  459. because we did

  460. those things

  461. and we can't

  462. change them

  463. at all.

  464. The Mayo Clinic

  465. said that 85%,

  466. the Mayo Clinic

  467. is a very famous

  468. hospital in the States,

  469. it says that 85%

  470. of all of their

  471. caseloads,

  472. 85% of the patients

  473. they see on a daily

  474. basis struggle

  475. with worry

  476. and anxiety.

  477. I was in a hospital,

  478. worked in a trauma

  479. unit for two years

  480. and for some reason

  481. in the middle

  482. of this massive

  483. emergency,

  484. the doctor turned

  485. to me and I will

  486. never forget this

  487. because he wasn't

  488. a Christ follower

  489. and he said,

  490. Tobin,

  491. if people could

  492. get rid of worry

  493. and guilt

  494. and shame

  495. in their lives,

  496. 75% of the people

  497. would never walk

  498. into the ER.

  499. They would never

  500. be here.

  501. I did a quick

  502. Google search

  503. on fears

  504. and worries.

  505. You know that

  506. there are 850 fears

  507. and worries

  508. recognized by the

  509. Journal of American

  510. Medicine?

  511. 850.

  512. I've put a couple

  513. of them up here

  514. for you to look at.

  515. The first one

  516. we have here

  517. is Germanophobia.

  518. You want to take

  519. a guess at what

  520. that is?

  521. Mike, you want

  522. to stand up?

  523. Germanophobia,

  524. it is the fear

  525. of all things

  526. German.

  527. Anything German,

  528. if you're afraid

  529. of it,

  530. you're a Germanophobiac.

  531. Photophobia

  532. is the fear

  533. of developing

  534. a phobia.

  535. So if you're

  536. afraid of being

  537. afraid or becoming

  538. afraid or becoming

  539. worried,

  540. you have photophobia.

  541. Euphobia,

  542. it is the fear

  543. of hearing good

  544. news because

  545. you believe

  546. that good news

  547. is always

  548. followed by bad

  549. news and you

  550. don't want to hear

  551. the bad news

  552. and so you

  553. are a euphobiite,

  554. if that's even

  555. a word.

  556. And my favorite

  557. one of all

  558. is homilophobia.

  559. Anyone want to

  560. take a guess

  561. what that means?

  562. The fear

  563. of sermons.

  564. Nate,

  565. you are right

  566. on, dude.

  567. It's the fear

  568. of sermons.

  569. If you are

  570. afraid of coming

  571. in and listening,

  572. if you are

  573. afraid of doing

  574. sermons,

  575. you are homilophobia.

  576. Okay,

  577. so that's just

  578. for fun.

  579. But the AMA

  580. says that the

  581. worry and stress

  582. is the largest

  583. health issue

  584. today in the West.

  585. The Greek word

  586. for worry

  587. is actually

  588. a picture

  589. of a person's

  590. mind and the

  591. mind is torn

  592. between the real

  593. and the possible,

  594. between the potential

  595. and the immediate.

  596. That's what the

  597. picture says.

  598. It's a mind

  599. and the mind

  600. is getting

  601. torn apart

  602. between what's

  603. really happening

  604. and what could

  605. happen.

  606. Worry is always

  607. about things

  608. we cannot

  609. control.

  610. Worry and stress

  611. are our attempt

  612. to control

  613. the uncontrollable.

  614. When we worry

  615. and stress

  616. in our life,

  617. a lot of things

  618. happen in us.

  619. Physiologically,

  620. our blood pressure

  621. rises.

  622. We develop this

  623. fight or flight

  624. syndrome.

  625. Our muscles

  626. get tense.

  627. Our breathing

  628. gets rapid.

  629. We're ready to fight

  630. or we're ready

  631. to run away.

  632. And what we realize

  633. in medicine

  634. is that this

  635. is not good.

  636. That your body

  637. should only stay

  638. like this

  639. for a very

  640. short period

  641. of time

  642. because if you

  643. live in stress

  644. for a long

  645. period of time,

  646. you're going

  647. to destroy

  648. your body.

  649. Look at Hong Kong.

  650. We're told

  651. that in Hong Kong,

  652. one-third of the

  653. people have

  654. high blood pressure

  655. and need to

  656. take meds.

  657. We're told

  658. that the rates

  659. of hypertension

  660. are going off

  661. the chart.

  662. One-third of the

  663. people have ulcers

  664. and they're taking

  665. meds.

  666. Strokes

  667. and heart

  668. attacks

  669. are out

  670. of control

  671. and what

  672. we see

  673. in our

  674. culture

  675. is that

  676. fear is

  677. killing us.

  678. Worry

  679. is killing

  680. us.

  681. It's hitting

  682. these huge

  683. burdens

  684. on the

  685. healthcare

  686. system.

  687. There's

  688. psychological

  689. fears of

  690. mental illness.

  691. There's

  692. spiritual fears

  693. of what

  694. happens.

  695. Often when

  696. people are

  697. worried,

  698. they're anxious,

  699. they describe

  700. it as being

  701. lost

  702. or in

  703. darkness

  704. or hollow

  705. or thin.

  706. And all of

  707. these things

  708. point to the

  709. fact that

  710. worry and

  711. fear and

  712. anxiety is

  713. destroying our

  714. lives.

  715. And the

  716. Bible says

  717. over and

  718. over and

  719. over again,

  720. don't fear.

  721. Don't be

  722. anxious.

  723. But if

  724. we're honest,

  725. all of us

  726. fear in

  727. some ways.

  728. I wrote

  729. out three

  730. ways that

  731. I fear.

  732. I fear

  733. of not

  734. getting what

  735. I want

  736. or thinking

  737. what I

  738. need.

  739. I need a

  740. job.

  741. I need a

  742. new job.

  743. We need a

  744. new boss.

  745. Will I ever

  746. get one?

  747. Will I ever

  748. get married?

  749. Will I ever

  750. have a spouse?

  751. Will I ever

  752. have kids?

  753. What will my

  754. kids turn out

  755. to be like?

  756. I need a

  757. better home.

  758. I need a

  759. new car.

  760. I want to

  761. serve God.

  762. Will I ever

  763. be able to

  764. serve God?

  765. Will I be

  766. significant?

  767. I don't know

  768. if I'll

  769. ever be

  770. successful.

  771. I don't know

  772. if I'll

  773. ever be

  774. successful.

  775. But I

  776. need this.

  777. And if I

  778. don't get

  779. it, my

  780. life is

  781. terrible.

  782. Sometimes, if

  783. we're honest,

  784. we fear not

  785. getting things

  786. or we fear

  787. getting what

  788. we don't

  789. want is

  790. probably the

  791. better way

  792. to say it.

  793. I'm afraid

  794. I'm going

  795. to get

  796. fired.

  797. I'm afraid

  798. I'm going

  799. to be made

  800. redundant.

  801. I'm afraid

  802. I might get

  803. another ticket

  804. and I can't

  805. afford to get

  806. another ticket.

  807. I'm afraid

  808. I'll have

  809. another bill

  810. come in

  811. unexpectedly

  812. and I can't

  813. afford to

  814. get another

  815. bill.

  816. I'm afraid

  817. I'm afraid

  818. that I'll

  819. get cancer

  820. or a heart

  821. attack.

  822. And I

  823. don't want

  824. that whatsoever.

  825. So we fear

  826. about what

  827. we don't

  828. get.

  829. We fear

  830. about getting

  831. something that

  832. we don't

  833. want.

  834. And sometimes,

  835. and this is the

  836. one that freaks

  837. me out the

  838. most, if we're

  839. honest, sometimes

  840. we fear about

  841. getting something

  842. and then we

  843. lose it.

  844. Have you ever

  845. had that?

  846. I mean,

  847. sometimes we

  848. fear things

  849. like, okay,

  850. I got a job

  851. but what if

  852. I get fired?

  853. I mean, I got

  854. kids but what if

  855. my kids don't

  856. turn out good?

  857. I finally got

  858. kids but what if

  859. I can't take

  860. care of them?

  861. What if I can't

  862. provide for them?

  863. What if I can't

  864. go to the right

  865. schools?

  866. I've got all

  867. these things but

  868. what if it

  869. doesn't work

  870. out right?

  871. I got married,

  872. I finally got

  873. married but what

  874. if they don't

  875. like me?

  876. What if they

  877. divorce me?

  878. I finally got

  879. this flat but I

  880. wonder how long

  881. I'm going to get

  882. to keep it?

  883. Am I going to

  884. keep it for one

  885. year or two

  886. years or how

  887. long am I going

  888. to get it?

  889. The fear of

  890. getting something

  891. you want and

  892. then losing it and

  893. all these fears,

  894. the scripture says,

  895. they point to our

  896. desires, our

  897. cores, our love,

  898. the very center of

  899. our heart.

  900. What you fear,

  901. what you worry

  902. about, the

  903. scripture says that

  904. is your idol,

  905. your God.

  906. the thing that

  907. controls you,

  908. that's what is at

  909. the center of who

  910. you are and you

  911. need to be careful

  912. of that because our

  913. culture in the world

  914. screams out all the

  915. time we walk into

  916. it, you need to have

  917. this, you need to do

  918. this, you shouldn't do

  919. this, you should have

  920. this, if you don't have

  921. this, you're not the

  922. right person, you need

  923. to get these things in

  924. your life and sometimes

  925. I walk out of the

  926. door and I understand

  927. and I turn the TV on

  928. and I realize I'm not

  929. fearing about the

  930. right things.

  931. Sometimes I watch a TV

  932. show and I realize I

  933. should have been

  934. fearing that I was

  935. going to get this,

  936. I didn't even know

  937. I could get that.

  938. And our culture is

  939. set up in a way that

  940. anxieties and fears

  941. and stress are pressed

  942. on us by school, by

  943. work, by our homes, by

  944. our families, and

  945. sometimes even by our

  946. churches.

  947. And this passage says

  948. over and over and

  949. over again not to

  950. fear, not to worry,

  951. not to be anxious.

  952. So we know what fear

  953. is, we know what

  954. worry is, it's the

  955. ability not to control

  956. our future, it's

  957. actually the ability not

  958. to be God.

  959. The next question we

  960. want to ask is where

  961. does it come from?

  962. Where does fear come

  963. from in our life?

  964. And the Bible says

  965. really clearly that fear

  966. comes from us wanting

  967. to control our lives.

  968. Fear, worry comes from

  969. us not being God in our

  970. lives, not being in

  971. control.

  972. In the beginning we

  973. see really clearly in

  974. the garden that you and

  975. I were made in the

  976. image of God.

  977. But that fractured when

  978. we wanted to be God.

  979. We wanted to be like

  980. Him.

  981. And that stamp of

  982. eternity that was on

  983. our heart, it's still

  984. there.

  985. And we're walking

  986. through life and we

  987. have these fears and we

  988. have these wonders and

  989. we wonder why can't we

  990. be in control?

  991. Why aren't we in

  992. control?

  993. What's happening in our

  994. world?

  995. Why won't God allow me to

  996. do the things that I want

  997. to do?

  998. Why can't I do those

  999. things?

1000. And one of the things you

1001. see in Scripture is that

1002. you and I were given

  1003. responsibility.

  1004. We're given responsibility

1005. to go out into the world

  1006. and subdue the world.

  1007. We're given responsibility

1008. to work and keep the

  1009. garden.

  1010. We're given responsibility

  1011. to name the animals.

  1012. We're given responsibility

  1013. to order our world.

1014. But when sin came in and

  1015. it fractured all those

  1016. things, we lost control.

1017. But for most of us, we

  1018. still want that control.

1019. And so what we try to do

1020. in our lives is we try to

  1021. accumulate stuff.

  1022. We try to accumulate

  1023. titles.

  1024. We try to accumulate

  1025. power.

  1026. We try to accumulate

1027. things that we feel like

1028. are going to give us

  1029. control.

1030. And we get anxious and we

1031. worry when we don't get

  1032. those things.

1033. And the Bible says to you

1034. and me today, and I'm

  1035. speaking to myself, that

  1036. control is an illusion.

1037. Being in control is an

  1038. illusion.

1039. The passage says that you,

1040. by your worrying, can't even

1041. add a couple inches onto your

  1042. height.

1043. You, by worrying, verse 25,

  1044. can't even add a couple hours

  1045. to your life.

1046. And so all the things we

1047. worry about, all the things

1048. we try to control, Scripture

1049. says that all of these

  1050. things are for naught.

  1051. It will never work.

1052. In fact, worry and fear is

1053. basically us saying we don't

  1054. trust God.

1055. And we don't trust Him to be

  1056. God in our lives.

1057. This Wednesday, I got this

  1058. call.

  1059. I wasn't expecting this call.

1060. And a guy had died, and they

1061. asked me to do the funeral.

  1062. I didn't know them.

1063. I walked into the family.

1064. They were a very nice

1065. looking family, and you could

1066. tell there was a small funeral

  1067. in North Point.

1068. And I walked in on Wednesday,

  1069. 11 o'clock, and you saw the

1070. 20 people, and you saw

  1071. sadness.

  1072. You saw worry.

  1073. You saw fear.

  1074. You saw anxiety.

1075. And I looked at these people,

1076. and I realized that this is

1077. what this passage is talking

  1078. about.

1079. The death of funeral is our

  1080. great object lesson.

1081. That when we walk into a

  1082. funeral, we realize really

1083. quickly that our lives are not

  1084. in our control.

1085. And no matter what we do,

1086. no matter how we act, no

1087. matter what we accumulate, no

1088. matter who we know, we can't

  1089. stop that moment.

1090. And the scripture says you

1091. cannot, and you cannot do that

1092. by worrying or fear or anxiety.

1093. It just won't go away.

1094. So the next question I have to

  1095. ask ourself is how?

1096. How do we get rid of the fear?

1097. How do we get rid of the worry?

1098. How do I know when I'm walking

1099. down that path, and I'm going to

  1100. end into that worry?

1101. What does it look like in my life

1102. when I start to worry, and how do

1103. I move and deviate myself from

  1104. those worries?

1105. And Jesus loves us so much in his

  1106. word.

1107. He doesn't just say, do this.

1108. But he gives us his word pictures

1109. of his goodness and his grace in

  1110. our life.

1111. As Jesus says in verse 24, if you

1112. look at your bulletin, this is what

  1113. he says for us.

1114. Consider the ravens, for they neither

  1115. sow nor reap.

1116. They have no storeroom or barn, and

  1117. yet God feeds them.

1118. How much more valuable are you than

  1119. the birds?

1120. Which of you, by worrying, could add

1121. a single cubit to his lifespan?

1122. If then you cannot do even a very

1123. little thing, why do you worry

  1124. about other matters?

  1125. Consider the lilies.

1126. Jesus' lesson for us, Jesus' message

1127. for us today on how we know and what

1128. we need to do begins with that word

  1129. consider.

1130. That word consider in Greek is a very,

  1131. very interesting word.

1132. It's packed really deeply with

  1133. theological meaning.

1134. It means to understand fully.

  1135. It means to consider.

  1136. It means to ponder.

1137. It means to think about.

1138. It means to understand and internalize

  1139. in our life.

1140. And what Jesus is saying here is that

1141. the battle for worry, the battle for

1142. fear, the battle for anxiety happens

  1143. in our minds.

1144. When we stop thinking about what God's

1145. doing in our life, when we stop

1146. considering who he is and what Christ

1147. has done with us, when we stop wrestling

1148. about God's goodness, when we stop doing

1149. all these things, fear and worry come

1150. into our world and change us,

1151. we know we're heading down the wrong path

1152. when we start thinking improper or wrongly

1153. about God and who he is.

1154. This passage talks about that in two ways.

1155. The first way is with the raven.

1156. Now when Jesus' hearers heard this,

1157. they would have been disgusted because

1158. the raven was the most, it was the lowest

1159. animal in the food chain.

  1160. It was a scavenger.

1161. It ate off of dead animals.

1162. It didn't take care of itself.

1163. And what they read and what they hear here

1164. is that God is in control

1165. of even the raven's lives.

1166. That God is in control.

1167. Don't allow your mind to change.

1168. Don't begin to doubt whether he is there.

1169. He is in control of even the raven's minds.

1170. He goes on in verse 28 and he continues

1171. to talk about the birds and the flowers

1172. and he's saying, guys, as you're walking

1173. through life, as you're entering

1174. into the minefield, when you start

1175. to have thoughts that aren't of God,

1176. when you start to question God's character,

1177. when you start to question who he is

1178. and his goodness, remember that he's there

1179. and that he's done everything for you.

  1180. Remember the gospel.

1181. Remember what Christ did on the cross.

1182. Remember that he's taken you there.

1183. Let me give you an illustration.

1184. If you were to walk in this Sunday

1185. and you looked at my kids

1186. and my kids had a really sad,

  1187. frowning face on them.

1188. They were really worried, like uber worried.

  1189. You're like, okay, something's going on

  1190. in another household.

1191. I need to ask them what's going on.

1192. And you pulled them aside

1193. and you said to my kids,

1194. hey guys, what's going on?

1195. What's happening in your life?

1196. And my kids said to you,

1197. you know, we don't know

1198. if our dad's going to feed us dinner tonight.

1199. We don't know if our dad's going to feed us tonight.

  1200. What would you think?

1201. Well, the first thing you would do

1202. is you'd look at them and you'd go,

  1203. you know guys,

1204. you can afford to miss a couple meals.

1205. None of my kids are here, okay.

1206. But the second thing you would say to them

  1207. is come on guys,

  1208. I know your dad.

  1209. I know that he's good.

1210. I know that he's fed you up until this point.

1211. You haven't missed any meals.

1212. It looks like you're really well fed.

1213. Why are you worrying about these things?

  1214. Come on guys.

  1215. I know your dad.

1216. I know that he provides for you things

1217. even beyond your wildest imagination.

1218. Your mom's always complaining about the chocolate

1219. and all these other things that he's giving you.

1220. You would look at my kids and go,

  1221. guys, what you fear

  1222. and what you worry

  1223. isn't true

1224. because your dad is so much better than that

1225. and he's giving you all these things.

1226. And when we start to worry,

1227. we look at what is happening in front of us

1228. and we forget God's faithfulness in our life.

1229. And the hard thing I think about this

1230. is that our culture in the world around us

  1231. stresses and obsesses

  1232. on food, clothing, housing,

1233. what you wear, what you eat,

1234. who you are, where you live.

1235. And Jesus looks at this passage

  1236. and he says,

1237. don't worry about these things

1238. because God has brought in you to this place

1239. and surely he's not going to leave you by yourself alone.

  1240. The passage continues on

1241. and he talks about just basically the lilies of the field.

1242. And when he talks about the lilies of the field,

1243. what he's saying to a Hebrew listener is

  1244. that God is good.

1245. Look at how God provides for these lilies.

1246. Look at how he takes care of them.

1247. You're worried that God's not in control, the ravens.

1248. You're worried that God is not good, the lilies.

  1249. But that's not true

  1250. because God is good

1251. and he's provided everything for you

  1252. and he's faithful and he's true

  1253. and he's there.

1254. Just look at the past

1255. and you can determine the future.

1256. Okay, so I'm in minibus eight on Tuesday

1257. going to the community center

1258. and I'm praying about this sermon.

  1259. I'm figuring out,

1260. okay, how the heck can I illustrate this

1261. and what can I do here

1262. and what should I say?

1263. And I'm listening in the minibus

1264. and there's this program on in the minibus

1265. and they're speaking in Cantonese.

1266. I have no idea what the program is about

1267. but in the middle of the program,

1268. a guy blurts out in English,

1269. the best and only predictor of future outcome

  1270. is past performance.

1271. The best and only predictor of future outcome

  1272. is past performance.

1273. And I wanted to jump up and say,

  1274. amen!

1275. Because that's the message of the Bible.

1276. If you're worried about God taking care of you tomorrow,

1277. what has he done in the past?

1278. If you're worried about your next step

1279. and where you're going to move

1280. and where you're going to live,

1281. he's already moved you to heaven.

  1282. That's a pretty good house.

1283. Why are you going to worry?

1284. Don't worry about the things today

1285. but look towards what Christ and God

1286. has done for us in the past.

  1287. The passage says basically

1288. that the path to worry and fear

1289. starts by thinking poorly about God.

1290. That we forget God's goodness.

  1291. We forget God's faithfulness.

1292. We forget that he's there for us.

1293. We forget that he's brought us all this way.

1294. And we worry about things

1295. that if we grab onto them,

  1296. they actually enslave us.

1297. They bring us into chains and darkness.

1298. When we worry or are anxious,

  1299. basically what we're saying

1300. is that we don't believe

1301. that God is totally in control.

1302. And we don't believe God is good.

1303. Worried about next year and your contract?

1304. Some of you shook your heads.

1305. The passage says that God is in control.

  1306. That God is good.

1307. Worried about how you're going to retire

  1308. at a certain time,

  1309. which I don't even know

  1310. if retirement is biblical.

  1311. But the passage says

1312. that God is in control

1313. and that God is good.

  1314. Worried about your kids

1315. and you've tried to do all these things

1316. and they're still not turning out

1317. the way that you want them to do

1318. but you're walking with God

1319. and you're sharing with them the gospel

1320. and they're making these bad choices.

  1321. The passage says

1322. that God is in control

  1323. and God is good.

1324. Jesus is telling you and me,

  1325. don't be anxious.

  1326. Don't worry about things

  1327. that aren't important

1328. because God will take care

  1329. of all these things

1330. he has from the very beginning of time

1331. and he will until this point.

1332. The second thing I realize in my life

1333. as I'm walking down this journey

1334. is found in verse 31.

  1335. And it's basically,

  1336. I realize for myself

  1337. when I start walking

1338. into the field of worry

  1339. and anxiety and fear

  1340. that I'm living

  1341. for the wrong kingdom.

  1342. Verse 31 goes on,

1343. but seek first his kingdom

  1344. and these things

1345. will be added to you.

  1346. We begin to worry,

  1347. we begin to fear

1348. when our priorities are wrong

1349. and we're serving the wrong kingdom.

1350. Jesus always taught of two worlds.

1351. This world that we live in right now

1352. and the world to come.

  1353. He always says

1354. that the world to come

  1355. is more real

  1356. and more tangible

  1357. than the world

1358. that we live in right now.

  1359. And the question

1360. that he always asked us was,

1361. are we going to live

1362. for this world right now

1363. or are we going to live

1364. for the world to come?

1365. Are we going to live

  1366. for the temporary

1367. or are we going to live

  1368. for the eternal?

1369. How are we going to live our lives?

1370. Where are we going to focus?

1371. And the passage says here

1372. that when we start to focus

  1373. on the wrong kingdom,

  1374. we start to worry

  1375. we start to fear

1376. and we start to get anxious.

  1377. Let me ask you

  1378. a really quick question.

  1379. How long

1380. is what you're working on

1381. right now in your business

  1382. going to last?

  1383. You're doing a new project,

  1384. which is great.

  1385. You're setting up a new company,

  1386. which is great.

  1387. You're setting up a new school,

  1388. which is great.

  1389. But how long

1390. is it going to last?

1391. Is it going to last forever?

1392. Now, the passage isn't saying

  1393. everybody quit their jobs

1394. and go be in missionaries

  1395. or in ministry.

1396. That's not what the passage

  1397. is saying at all.

1398. But the passage is saying this,

  1399. whatever you do,

1400. do it for the kingdom of God.

  1401. Focus on Christ.

1402. Focus your life on God.

1403. Put God at the center

  1404. of your life.

1405. Put God in the center

  1406. of your world,

  1407. making sure that you

  1408. think about Him.

  1409. Everything that we do

  1410. is centered on Christ

  1411. and what He does

  1412. in our life.

  1413. When He says,

  1414. seek His kingdom first,

  1415. what He's saying

  1416. is understand God.

  1417. Understand the gospel.

1418. Put Jesus in your life.

  1419. Let Him be Lord,

  1420. not just on Sunday,

  1421. but on Monday

  1422. and Tuesday

  1423. and Wednesday

  1424. and Thursday.

  1425. Let Him be Lord

  1426. in the boardroom.

  1427. Let Him be Lord

  1428. in your family.

1429. Let Him be the center

1430. of everything that you do.

1431. Trust Him because He's good.

1432. Trust Him because He's brought you there.

1433. Trust Him because He's in control.

  1434. Seek first His kingdom

1435. and if you seek first His kingdom,

1436. everything else will be okay.

1437. And the reason we get anxious,

1438. the reason we get worried,

1439. the reason that we become fearful

  1440. is because we're seeking

  1441. the wrong kingdom.

1442. Let me ask you another question.

  1443. I'm trying really hard

  1444. on a business standpoint

  1445. to relate to everybody.

  1446. what if you knew

  1447. that the country

1448. that you had all your wealth

  1449. and all your assets

1450. and everything that you were,

  1451. what if you knew

  1452. that that country

1453. was going to fall apart

  1454. and was no longer

  1455. going to exist

1456. and the new world power

  1457. in the world

1458. was going to be Australia?

  1459. Now, I know,

  1460. I know that's very scary

1461. and it's hard to think about,

1462. but what if you knew

1463. that was going to happen?

  1464. What if you knew

  1465. that country

  1466. that you had everything

  1467. invested in was going

  1468. to fall apart

  1469. and everything was going

  1470. to fall away

1471. and that the new world power

1472. was going to be Australia?

  1473. What would you do?

  1474. You'd take everything

  1475. that you had,

  1476. hopefully if you're smart,

1477. and you'd put it in Australia.

  1478. You'd invest in Australia

  1479. stocks and bonds

  1480. and all these things.

  1481. And this passage

1482. is saying just that to us.

1483. Jesus is coming into our life

  1484. and He's asking us

  1485. the question,

  1486. which currency

  1487. are you investing in?

  1488. Are you investing

1489. in the currency of heaven

  1490. or are you investing

1491. in the currency of man?

1492. Where is your money going to?

  1493. He's not saying, again,

  1494. don't have fun.

  1495. I think the scripture

1496. is all about having fun

  1497. and enjoying and relaxing

  1498. and walking with God.

1499. And I think that if I were you,

  1500. I would say,

1501. you stay in your job

1502. and make a ton of money

  1503. and enjoy it

1504. and give it to God

  1505. and allow God

1506. to use it for His kingdom

1507. and just be the best

  1508. business person

  1509. or best teacher

1510. or whatever God has you do,

1511. you do it to the glory of God.

  1512. Don't leave

  1513. what you're doing now

  1514. because you're saying,

  1515. well, this passage says

  1516. I've got to invest

  1517. in God's kingdom.

1518. You do invest in God's kingdom

  1519. wherever you're at.

1520. But what if you knew

  1521. that everything

1522. that you were investing in

1523. was going to fall apart

  1524. and that kingdom

1525. would no longer be there?

1526. How would you handle your stuff?

  1527. The story goes

  1528. that Queen Elizabeth I

  1529. went to a man

1530. and she said to him,

1531. I need you to go

1532. on a journey for me.

  1533. True story.

1534. I need you to go

1535. on a journey for me.

1536. I need you to explore

  1537. uncharted territories,

  1538. a new world,

  1539. and I believe that

  1540. you're the person

  1541. for this job.

1542. I need you to do this for me.

1543. The man looked at her

  1544. and he said,

  1545. you can't mean me.

  1546. I'm a small businessman.

1547. My business is doing terrible.

  1548. And if I do

1549. what you want me to do,

1550. if I go on this journey

1551. to explore these new lands,

1552. if I do all these things,

  1553. my business will fail

  1554. and I'll be a wreck.

  1555. And history tells us

  1556. that Queen Elizabeth,

1557. I wish I could have met her,

  1558. she probably was

  1559. a really tough girl,

  1560. she looked at him

  1561. and she said this,

1562. if you mind my business,

  1563. I'll mind your business.

1564. If you mind my business,

  1565. I'll mind your business.

  1566. And we're told

1567. that the man looked at her

  1568. and he said,

  1569. okay.

  1570. Because he realized

1571. that if the Queen of England

1572. was looking after his stuff,

  1573. then his stuff

1574. was going to be okay.

1575. Jesus in this passage says,

  1576. seek first his kingdom.

1577. what he's saying to you

  1578. and to me especially,

1579. is that if we mind his business,

1580. he's going to take care

  1581. of our business.

1582. If we mind his stuff,

1583. he's going to take care

  1584. of our stuff.

  1585. Because he's good.

1586. And we can trust him.

1587. And the minute we start to worry,

1588. the minute we start to doubt,

1589. the minute we start to fear,

  1590. the scripture says

  1591. that what we've done

1592. is we've taken our mind

  1593. off of his business.

  1594. And we've put it

  1595. onto our business.

  1596. Three thoughts

1597. I want to share with you

  1598. and we're done.

1599. The first thought is this.

  1600. This is what's been

  1601. going through my head.

  1602. Often we feel like

1603. we need to get security

  1604. in our lives

1605. or certain areas of our life

1606. before we can be free

1607. to serve and trust God

  1608. as he wishes

1609. and as he wants us to.

  1610. But this passage says

  1611. that control

  1612. and having enough

  1613. and choosing ourselves

  1614. is a myth

1615. and it will never happen.

  1616. It will never happen.

1617. Because God is in control.

  1618. Not you.

1619. And so my thought for us is

  1620. would we trust him

1621. to be in his business

  1622. and to trust him

  1623. for ours?

  1624. I run into guys

  1625. all the time

  1626. and they're doing ministry

  1627. and they're doing things

  1628. and they go,

  1629. you know,

1630. I wish I could just save up

  1631. about five million dollars

1632. and if I saved up

  1633. about five million dollars

  1634. then I could really,

1635. I could run an NGO.

  1636. I could do what I feel

1637. like God really wants me to do.

  1638. But I can't really do that

1639. until I get this done.

  1640. I mean,

  1641. I can't really go

  1642. and do these things

1643. until I finish this one career

1644. because if I finish this one career

  1645. then I'll have security

  1646. and I can rest

  1647. because my retirement's assured

1648. and then I can go be

  1649. a missionary

  1650. or a pastor

1651. or do whatever I want to do.

  1652. And this passage says

  1653. that's a lie

1654. because God is in control

1655. and we can trust him

1656. to take care of us

  1657. and to be good

  1658. and because he's good

  1659. we can be generous

  1660. with the stuff

  1661. that he's given us.

  1662. The second thing

  1663. that's been hitting me

  1664. is that Jesus teaches

  1665. two worlds.

  1666. There's a temporal world,

  1667. a temporary world,

  1668. here and now

  1669. and an eternal world.

  1670. And the question

1671. we have to ask ourselves

  1672. is where are we

  1673. investing our currency?

  1674. Where are we investing

  1675. our energies?

  1676. Where are we investing

  1677. our life?

  1678. Where are we investing

1679. the best part of who we are?

  1680. Are we investing it

  1681. in this world

1682. or in the heavenly world?

  1683. Again, I'm not saying

  1684. quit your job

1685. but what I'm saying is

  1686. do your job

1687. to the glory of God.

  1688. Trust God to be

1689. at the center of your job.

  1690. Trust God to be

1691. at the center of your family.

  1692. Do these things

  1693. for his glory.

  1694. Trust him.

  1695. Trust him.

  1696. Do his stuff

  1697. and trust him

  1698. with your stuff.

1699. Where are we investing it?

  1700. The question maybe

1701. I would ask in that sense

  1702. would be this.

1703. If you had a client

  1704. and you knew

  1705. that his job

  1706. or his business

  1707. had an eternal lifespan

  1708. or his life

  1709. had an eternal lifespan

1710. and you went to him

  1711. to look about

  1712. how he was investing

  1713. his money

  1714. and he was only

  1715. investing his money

1716. for the next 80 years

1717. what would you tell him?

  1718. I mean he has

  1719. an eternal outlook.

1720. He has an eternal lifespan

  1721. on his company

  1722. or whoever he is.

1723. He has an eternal lifespan

  1724. but when you look

  1725. at his finances

  1726. he's only investing them

1727. in the next 70 to 80 years.

  1728. What would you say

  1729. to that guy

  1730. or girl?

  1731. The Bible would say

  1732. they're a fool.

  1733. They're a fool.

  1734. They're a fool.

  1735. They're a fool.

  1736. They're a fool.

  1737. They're a fool.

  1738. They're a fool.

  1739. And finally

  1740. the last thought

  1741. that's been hitting me

  1742. in the head is

1743. what do you worry about today?

1744. If you could write down

  1745. on a 3x5 card

1746. what do you worry about?

1747. What do you worry about?

  1748. What do you fear?

1749. What are you anxious about?

  1750. Do you realize

1751. as you do those things

1752. that God is in control

  1753. and that he's good

1754. and he's brought you this far

1755. and he can trust you?

1756. What is it that you fear?

1757. What is it that you worry about?

1758. What is it that you're anxious about?

  1759. Scripture says

  1760. that there are only

  1761. two game plans

  1762. for living our life.

1763. Either we are totally competent

  1764. to run our life

  1765. and we put ourselves

1766. at the center of our life

  1767. or we put God

1768. at the center of our life.

1769. Those are the only two

  1770. game plans in Scripture.

  1771. Two worlds,

  1772. two kingdoms,

  1773. two people running.

  1774. Either you're so competent

  1775. in who you are

  1776. and you know how

  1777. to live your life

  1778. and you can know

  1779. everything you've done

1780. and you can do it perfectly

  1781. and you don't even

  1782. doubt yourself

  1783. and you put yourself

1784. at the center of your world

1785. or you trust in God.

  1786. You put him

1787. at the center of the world.

  1788. Where are you today?

1789. When I ask these questions

  1790. to myself,

1791. I have some really hard

  1792. answers sometimes

  1793. because sometimes

  1794. I say this

  1795. but often I live

  1796. like I don't believe it.

1797. And I think the power

  1798. of the gospel,

1799. the power of this passage

1800. is what Jesus is saying

  1801. to us is,

  1802. guys,

  1803. you need to come

  1804. alongside each other.

1805. You need to come alongside

  1806. in being in community.

  1807. You need to realize

  1808. that when someone's down

  1809. and they're frustrated

  1810. and they're worried

  1811. and they're anxious

1812. and you see it on their face,

  1813. you need to come

  1814. into the world

1815. and you need to gospel them.

  1816. You need to speak

  1817. God's word to them.

  1818. You need to say,

1819. hey, God brought you this far.

1820. He's not going to leave you hanging.

1821. Hey, God did all these things

  1822. up until this point.

  1823. He gave his son

  1824. for your life.

  1825. There's no way

  1826. that he's not going

  1827. to provide for you.

  1828. His word says

1829. he will provide for you.

1830. You have to trust him.

1831. He will provide for you

  1832. and he's good.

1833. The power of the gospel

1834. changes all of these things

  1835. and it basically says

  1836. we can trust God

  1837. because he's given

  1838. everything for us.

  1839. He's withheld nothing.

  1840. He's good

  1841. and he wants

1842. an amazing life for us

  1843. and the question is

1844. will we trust him for that

1845. or will we live our life

  1846. for our own?

1847. My prayer for each of us

  1848. in here today

1849. is that we would surrender

  1850. our lives to Christ,

  1851. that we'd ask him

1852. to be Lord of our life,

  1853. that we'd ask him

  1854. to be the center

  1855. of our world,

1856. that we would trust him

  1857. to be in control,

1858. that we would trust him

  1859. to be good

  1860. and that we'd rest

  1861. in his faithfulness

  1862. and we wouldn't worry

  1863. about so many things.

1864. We wouldn't be so fearful

  1865. about so many things.

1866. We wouldn't be so anxious

  1867. about so many things

1868. because we have a God

1869. who loves us so much

1870. and wants the best for us

  1871. and he's done everything

1872. to bring us to this point

1873. and we can trust him.

  1874. Consider,

  1875. think about,

  1876. understand,

  1877. understand fully,

  1878. grab onto,

  1879. cling to,

1880. don't let it escape you.

  1881. Consider the ravens

1882. for they neither sow nor reap

1883. for they have no storeroom

  1884. nor barn

1885. and yet God feeds them.

  1886. how much more valuable

1887. are you than these birds?

  1888. Consider,

  1889. think about,

  1890. ponder,

  1891. bring into your heart,

1892. don't allow it to escape,

  1893. talk to other people,

  1894. encourage them,

1895. tell them this is the truth,

1896. this is who God is,

1897. this is what God wants for you.

  1898. Consider the lilies,

  1899. how they grow,

  1900. they neither toil

  1901. nor they spin,

  1902. but I tell you,

  1903. even Solomon

  1904. in all his glory

  1905. clothed himself

1906. like none of these things.

  1907. God is good

1908. and you can trust him.

  1909. Consider him.

  1910. Father,

1911. I thank you for this day,

1912. I thank you for your word.

  1913. We thank you

1914. that it is 2,000 years old

1915. and it still changes our lives.

  1916. It moves us,

  1917. it convicts us,

1918. it points us to your son.

  1919. Lord,

1920. I know that there are many of us

  1921. in here right now

1922. who refuse to doubt in ourselves.

  1923. We refuse to surrender

  1924. our lives to you.

1925. We think that we can run

1926. our life on our own.

1927. We think that we know

1928. the best way of doing things.

1929. But if we're totally honest,

1930. if we looked at our lives,

1931. if we looked at our relationships,

1932. if we looked at our communities,

  1933. we'd realize that things

  1934. aren't that good.

  1935. Father,

1936. I pray for those people

  1937. who've never come

1938. into a relationship with you

  1939. that they would consider

  1940. your faithfulness,

  1941. they would consider

  1942. your goodness,

  1943. they would consider

  1944. this passage

  1945. and who you are

  1946. and they would know

1947. that they can trust you.

1948. And I pray that they would

1949. just say something simple like,

  1950. dear Jesus,

  1951. I just,

  1952. forgive me.

  1953. Forgive me for doubting

  1954. your goodness.

  1955. Forgive me for doubting

  1956. that you're in control.

1957. I surrender my life to you

1958. and I repent of these things

1959. that have held me away from you.

  1960. And Father,

1961. I know that there are

1962. some of us in here

  1963. like me

  1964. who we trust you

  1965. for eternity.

1966. But we have a hard time

  1967. trusting you for Monday.

  1968. Yeah,

  1969. you've given us

  1970. eternal life

1971. and we have a place

  1972. in heaven

  1973. and we benefit

  1974. of all your mercy

  1975. and your grace

1976. and the gospel changes us.

  1977. But when we step

  1978. into the boardroom

1979. or we step into the office

  1980. or when we step

  1981. into our family,

  1982. we jump back

  1983. into the center

  1984. of our lives.

  1985. And Father,

1986. I just pray for me

  1987. and for us.

  1988. We repent.

  1989. We confess our sin.

  1990. We confess just

  1991. trying to live life

  1992. on our own.

1993. And we come to you

  1994. as your children

  1995. and just ask you

  1996. to heal us

  1997. and to change us.

  1998. And Father,

  1999. for all of us

2000. as we come before you,

  2001. we just are marveling

2002. at how good you are

2003. and how gracious you are.

2004. And we come before you

  2005. as a church

  2006. and I pray, Lord,

  2007. as a church

2008. that we would consider you often.

2009. That we would trust you

2010. and we would walk with you.

  2011. So Lord,

  2012. we just,

  2013. I just pray

2014. in these next couple moments

2015. as we think of this passage,

2016. no matter where we're at,

2017. that you would speak to us.

2018. That you would change us.

2019. That you would heal us.

  2020. And we would walk

  2021. in the newness

2022. of a relationship with you

  2023. and we would feel

  2024. your mercy and grace.

  2025. We pray these things

  2026. in your Son,

  2027. Jesus Christ,

  2028. holy name.

  2029. Amen.

  2030. Amen.

  2031. Amen.

  2032. Amen.

  2033. Amen.

  2034. Amen.

  2035. Amen.

  2036. Amen.

  2037. Amen.

  2038. Amen.

  2039. Amen.

  2040. Amen.

  2041. Amen.

  2042. Amen.

  2043. Amen.

  2044. Amen.

  2045. Amen.

  2046. Amen.

  2047. Amen.

  2048. Amen.

  2049. Amen.

  2050. Amen.

  2051. Amen.

  2052. Amen.

  2053. Amen.

  2054. Amen.

  2055. Amen.

  2056. Amen.

  2057. Amen.

  2058. Amen.

  2059. Amen.

  2060. Amen.

  2061. Amen.

  2062. Amen.

  2063. Amen.

  2064. Amen.

  2065. Amen.

  2066. Amen.

  2067. Amen.

  2068. Amen.

  2069. Amen.

  2070. Amen.

  2071. Amen.

  2072. Amen.

  2073. Amen.

  2074. Amen.

  2075. Amen.

  2076. Amen.

  2077. Amen.

  2078. Amen.
