  1. Today's scripture reading comes from Proverbs 4, 1 through 9.

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Hear, O sons, a father's instruction, and be attentive that you may gain insight.

  4. For I give you good precepts. Do not forsake my teaching.

  5. When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,

  6. he taught me and said to me,

  7. Let your heart hold fast my words.

  8. Keep my commandments and live.

  9. Get wisdom. Get insight.

  10. Do not forgive and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.

  11. Do not forsake her and she will keep you.

  12. Love her and she will guard you.

  13. The beginning of wisdom is this.

  14. Get wisdom. And whatever you get, get insight.

  15. Prize her highly and she will exalt you.

  16. She will honor you if you embrace her.

  17. She will place on your head a graceful garland.

  18. She will bestow on you a beautiful crown.

  19. Train up a child in the way he should go.

  20. Even when he is old, he will not depart from it.

  21. Proverbs 22, 6.

  22. This is the reading of God's word.

  23. How's it going?

  24. I am Eric Scott.

  25. I'm the youth guy here at Watermark Community Church.

  26. And although I have spoken and preached other places,

  27. this is my first time preaching at Watermark.

  28. And so Millen, being the great friend that he is,

  29. had two important pieces of advice for me when I walked in today.

  30. His first piece of advice, don't puke on stage.

  31. And his second one, just remember, any mistakes that you make will end up on YouTube.

  32. I'm glad to know that I have great friends who are looking out for me

  33. as I come and share God's word with us today.

  34. So I am the youth guy.

  35. And as you look at your bulletin and you see that I'm speaking on youth today,

  36. you probably think, well, that kind of makes sense

  37. as we go throughout our series of Proverbs.

  38. But there's actually a bigger reason that I'm speaking on youth

  39. than just the fact that I am the youth guy.

  40. That is a major part of it.

  41. But also, if you think about it, on the whole spectrum of life,

  42. I'm actually, this may surprise some of you,

  43. closer to a 13-year-old than to a 35-year-old.

  44. At least in age, possibly in maturity sometimes.

  45. But I think that the way that the church approaches youth

  46. and the attitude that it has towards the youth,

  47. not just what we classify as youth in terms of middle schoolers and high schoolers,

  48. but in terms of people younger than us,

  49. the generation that's coming up,

  50. has an impact not just on them, but on me as well,

  51. and on the generation that I am a part of.

  52. And so as I come today, I'm not just saying,

  53. this is how we should approach them.

  54. But I'm a part of that group.

  55. I'm a part of this youth that needs to be constantly trained

  56. and taught what it means to follow God,

  57. what it means to seek Him and to know Him.

  58. And so, like I said, today we're continuing our series on Proverbs.

  59. And just in case you haven't been here,

  60. I want to review a couple things about the series of Proverbs

  61. that have been something we've been coming back to every week of this series.

  62. The first thing is that as we look at the book of Proverbs,

  63. it's not just a collection of teachings,

  64. do this, do that, do this, do that.

  65. But it's actually more about who we are,

  66. about being people who love and fear God,

  67. rather than just people who do the right things.

  68. And so as we look at the book of Proverbs,

  69. we're trying to look at it not just from the perspective of

  70. what are we supposed to do,

  71. but also the perspective of

  72. who are we supposed to be in light of who God is

  73. and what He has revealed to us of Himself.

  74. And the second thing is that throughout this series of Proverbs,

  75. we've been talking about an oriental rug.

  76. Do we have the picture?

  77. And we've talked about how

  78. when you look at the back of an oriental rug,

  79. you see knots and you see loose threads dangling down.

  80. And you see that there's something,

  81. but you're not quite sure of what the full, clear picture is.

  82. And the front of the rug has that full, clear picture.

  83. And we've sort of compared this

  84. to the way that we are able to see the world

  85. versus the way that God sees the world.

  86. When we look at the world,

  87. we can see, similar to the back of the rug,

  88. we see this jumbled mess.

  89. We see knots, we see loose strings hanging around,

  90. and we see enough to know that there's

  91. something of a picture being worked out there,

  92. but we can't see the full picture.

  93. But God from the other side sees this full picture,

  94. and he's working in light of this full picture.

  95. And so as we try to live in this world

  96. and get this understanding of the picture,

  97. ultimately, we don't do that through doing the right things,

  98. but through God revealing it to us.

  99. And so as we look at the book of Proverbs,

  100. we want to see in this book,

  101. not just what kind of broken picture

  102. from the world's perspective can we get from it,

  103. but also how does God's word

  104. and how does who God is

  105. help us to understand the more full picture

  106. so that we can live in the truth

  107. of what this book is revealing to us.

  108. And like I said,

  109. today we are talking on the book of Proverbs.

  110. We're talking on youth.

  111. And so one thing I want to really look at

  112. is according to the book of Proverbs,

  113. what should shape our interaction with the youth?

  114. And I think there's a lot that the book of Proverbs has to say

  115. on our interaction with youth,

  116. with whether it's our own kids

  117. or just the younger generation in general.

  118. It has a lot of advice that it gives to people.

  119. Train up a child in the way that he should go.

  120. Again, like we said,

  121. it's not this strict promise

  122. that if you do the right thing as a parent,

  123. your kids are going to turn out okay.

  124. But it's a general rule that generally,

  125. parents who train up their child correctly

  126. have children who turn out the right way.

  127. There are exceptions to that.

  128. There are parents who are amazing parents

  129. and whose kids totally turn away from God.

  130. There are parents who are terrible parents

  131. who have kids that end up following God wholeheartedly.

  132. But as a general rule,

  133. parents who train up their children

  134. in the way that they should go

  135. have kids who follow God.

  136. And so we have a collection of these teachings

  137. saying things like discipline your kids.

  138. Don't withhold discipline from them.

  139. It'll help them to grow into the person

  140. that they're supposed to be.

  141. But the overwhelming majority of the teaching

  142. that the book of Proverbs gives

  143. on our interaction with youth

  144. is given by example rather than by speaking it.

  145. And here's what I mean by that.

  146. The book of Proverbs is a collection of teachings

  147. that a father gives to his son.

  148. The father basically sits down with his son.

  149. He says,

  150. Hey kid, you don't get the world.

  151. You don't know how it works.

  152. And I'm not just going to abandon you

  153. to live in this messed up understanding of reality,

  154. but I'm going to take you under my wing.

  155. I'm going to teach you.

  156. I'm going to tell you,

  157. here's how things work.

  158. And so we have a collection of these teachings

  159. from this father who loves his son,

  160. who takes him under his wings,

  161. and who teaches him how the world should work.

  162. And this, I think, gives us an example

  163. of how our interaction with the youth around us should be.

  164. It's not just a distance thing,

  165. but it's something where we come in,

  166. we get involved in their lives,

  167. and Solomon is modeling this to us

  168. throughout the book of Proverbs.

  169. And as we look at that,

  170. what exactly is it that he's saying

  171. we're supposed to do with the youth?

  172. How is it that we're supposed to instruct them?

  173. And so let's jump in and look at that.

  174. The first thing that Solomon teaches us

  175. about our interaction with youth

  176. and how it's supposed to be

  177. is that ultimately our training,

  178. our instruction of youth

  179. should be training and instruction in wisdom,

  180. which has its root in the fear of the Lord.

  181. This stand spins a lot.

  182. Can we lock that down some more?

  183. That is much better.

  184. Sorry about that.

  185. That ultimately,

  186. our instruction of youth

  187. is that we instruct them and train them

  188. in wisdom

  189. and not just in the right things to do.

  190. Ultimately,

  191. the goal of the church

  192. is not to raise good kids

  193. who stay in school,

  194. don't do drugs,

  195. stay out of prison,

  196. grow up,

  197. probably get married

  198. and have a nice spouse

  199. and good kids of their own.

  200. The goal of the church

  201. is to produce disciples of Christ,

  202. people who know Jesus,

  203. who love Jesus,

  204. who follow him

  205. with all that they have

  206. and all that they are.

  207. And ultimately,

  208. the book of Proverbs

  209. points us towards this.

  210. The book of Proverbs,

  211. when Solomon is teaching his son,

  212. he says,

  213. the beginning of wisdom is this,

  214. get wisdom.

  215. He doesn't say,

  216. the beginning of wisdom is this,

  217. go out

  218. and be a good person,

  219. be nice to the people around you.

  220. He says,

  221. ultimately,

  222. the beginning of wisdom

  223. is get wisdom.

  224. And he teaches his son

  225. that wisdom starts

  226. in the fear of the Lord.

  227. Here at Watermark,

  228. we have this phrase that we use

  229. that says,

  230. the gospel changes everything.

  231. The gospel,

  232. this good news

  233. that we have

  234. that although

  235. we were sinners,

  236. although we were rebels

  237. against God,

  238. he came down

  239. as a man,

  240. as Jesus.

  241. He came down,

  242. lived the perfect life

  243. that we could never live

  244. and died

  245. to pay a price

  246. that we could never pay

  247. so that we can have

  248. a new relationship with God.

  249. This is the good news

  250. that we believe

  251. that unites us

  252. as Christians.

  253. And this changes

  254. everything

  255. about who we are.

  256. Because ultimately,

  257. it says

  258. that our standing

  259. with God,

  260. the way to be

  261. the right people,

  262. is not by doing

  263. the right things,

  264. is not by

  265. going out

  266. and volunteering

  267. at the elderly home

  268. or feeding the poor,

  269. but ultimately,

  270. the thing that marks

  271. the difference

  272. is our standing

  273. with Christ,

  274. whether we have trusted

  275. in him or not.

  276. And yes,

  277. this does lead

  278. to a change

  279. in our actions.

  280. Yes,

  281. this does lead

  282. to what society

  283. would label

  284. as more moral behavior.

  285. But ultimately,

  286. this change

  287. in our behavior

  288. is based

  289. not in what we've done,

  290. but in who we are.

  291. And once who we are

  292. has been transformed,

  293. that leads

  294. to a change

  295. in what we do.

  296. And so,

  297. in Proverbs,

  298. we see this,

  299. that Solomon

  300. is constantly going back

  301. to the fact

  302. that at the core

  303. of training up a child

  304. must be this instruction

  305. in wisdom

  306. and fear of the Lord

  307. and shaping him

  308. or her

  309. into the right person

  310. that is seeking God

  311. and desiring to know him

  312. rather than just

  313. doing the right things.

  314. And just as a youth worker,

  315. I see this occasionally

  316. in terms of parents

  317. who come into the church

  318. and they bring their kids

  319. because they want their kids

  320. to learn good morals.

  321. They come into the church

  322. and they bring their little kids

  323. and send them off

  324. to Sunday school

  325. because they want them

  326. to learn to not do drugs,

  327. to stay in school,

  328. to stay out of prison probably,

  329. and probably be

  330. like a few steps higher

  331. on the whole moral chart

  332. than just good enough

  333. to stay out of prison.

  334. But they come in

  335. not because they want

  336. their kids to know Christ,

  337. but because they want

  338. their kids to be good people.

  339. And this is a recipe

  340. for disaster

  341. because the kids

  342. see right through that.

  343. And the kids see

  344. that ultimately

  345. their parents

  346. aren't concerned

  347. with Christ.

  348. Their parents are concerned

  349. with them being good people.

  350. And they see

  351. that the primary thing

  352. is missing.

  353. And so what happens

  354. so many times

  355. is these parents

  356. come in

  357. and they come in

  358. hoping for their kids

  359. to become

  360. these good people

  361. except for that

  362. the parents

  363. don't have any interest

  364. in knowing Christ.

  365. And the parents

  366. drop their kids off

  367. on Sunday morning

  368. and then

  369. maybe go to church,

  370. maybe just go home

  371. and relax for a couple hours

  372. and then come pick up

  373. their kids.

  374. And they're hoping

  375. to get this moral change

  376. without getting

  377. the primary thing

  378. which is a relationship

  379. with Christ.

  380. They're hoping

  381. to get this secondary thing

  382. without getting

  383. the primary thing

  384. that leads to it.

  385. And C.S. Lewis,

  386. the guy who wrote

  387. The Chronicles of Narnia,

  388. says that that is a recipe

  389. for disaster.

  390. That people who seek

  391. secondary things

  392. without first getting

  393. the primary things

  394. that lead to those,

  395. they lose

  396. not only the primary thing

  397. but the secondary thing

  398. that they're seeking as well.

  399. That ultimately,

  400. even if they did turn out great

  401. and have

  402. the best behavior ever

  403. and, you know,

  404. go into school

  405. and get stickers on a chart

  406. for great behavior every day,

  407. if they don't get

  408. the part about knowing Christ,

  409. then we lose.

  410. Because ultimately,

  411. their good works

  412. don't make them

  413. better in God's sight.

  414. But their good works

  415. still leave them

  416. falling short.

  417. And ultimately,

  418. Christ is what they need

  419. to be this new person

  420. that they're supposed to be,

  421. the person that we're supposed

  422. to be training them to be.

  423. The second thing

  424. that Proverbs tells us

  425. about our interaction

  426. with youth

  427. is that youth

  428. will not train themselves

  429. in wisdom and godliness.

  430. It tells us,

  431. train up a child

  432. in the way that he should go.

  433. This isn't a passive command

  434. to sit back

  435. and let him go

  436. and, hey, have fun,

  437. see ya.

  438. Because ultimately,

  439. there's this understanding

  440. that they will be trained,

  441. they will be sent

  442. in a certain direction,

  443. and if we're not pointing them

  444. in the right direction

  445. and showing them,

  446. hey, this is the way

  447. that we're supposed to go,

  448. this is the God

  449. that we're supposed to serve,

  450. this is how we're supposed

  451. to serve them,

  452. they're going to seek out

  453. other ways.

  454. Like, I don't know

  455. if you guys get this,

  456. but teenagers

  457. understand that they

  458. don't get the world.

  459. They understand

  460. that it's a confusing

  461. and messed up place,

  462. and they're like,

  463. I don't understand

  464. how this works

  465. or how I'm supposed

  466. to fit into it.

  467. They put on a face

  468. that says,

  469. I've got this all figured out,

  470. I'm in control.

  471. But when you sit down

  472. with them

  473. and they're honest with you,

  474. they'll admit,

  475. I'm totally confused.

  476. They'll admit,

  477. I don't get what's going on.

  478. And they'll admit

  479. that I need someone

  480. who I can talk to

  481. who has a better grasp

  482. on this thing

  483. than I do.

  484. And they go out

  485. and they will seek

  486. people who can be

  487. that mentor,

  488. that guide,

  489. that uncle,

  490. aunt,

  491. big brother,

  492. parent figure

  493. in their lives.

  494. And the Bible says

  495. that we need to be there

  496. for them to be

  497. that figure,

  498. to train them up

  499. in the way of the Lord

  500. because if Christians

  501. and the church

  502. aren't there for them,

  503. they're going to still

  504. seek out wisdom,

  505. they're going to still

  506. seek out advice

  507. and training

  508. on how to live

  509. in the world,

  510. but they're going to seek it

  511. from other sources.

  512. They're going to seek it

  513. from the media.

  514. They're going to seek it

  515. from their friends at school

  516. because their friends at school

  517. are just as good

  518. at pretending

  519. they have everything

  520. all together

  521. as they are,

  522. only they believe

  523. that their friends

  524. actually have it all together.

  525. And if we are not

  526. intentional

  527. in actively pursuing

  528. training them up

  529. in the knowledge

  530. and fear of the Lord,

  531. they're going to be

  532. trained up

  533. in other ways.

  534. And so,

  535. we as a church

  536. need to intentionally

  537. pursue training them up

  538. in the wisdom

  539. and knowledge of the Lord.

  540. And just a side note,

  541. this doesn't mean

  542. that we pretend

  543. to be perfect

  544. so that they'll come to us

  545. because they see

  546. that we have it all together.

  547. Like I said,

  548. they know that the world

  549. is a messed up place.

  550. They know

  551. that they can't

  552. figure it out

  553. on their own

  554. and they know

  555. that it's a messed up

  556. enough place

  557. that probably

  558. other people

  559. don't have it all

  560. figured out either.

  561. And so,

  562. a lot of times

  563. what I've seen

  564. is that parents

  565. or youth workers

  566. or adults in their lives,

  567. when they see kids

  568. who are having

  569. problems

  570. and questions

  571. and don't get it,

  572. their response is,

  573. I have to be perfect

  574. for them

  575. so that they'll know

  576. that I have it all together

  577. and that I can help them

  578. through this time.

  579. The problem with that

  580. is either

  581. the kid knows

  582. that you're a liar

  583. because they know

  584. that you're actually

  585. messed up

  586. or they believe

  587. that you're actually

  588. perfect

  589. and the fear

  590. of talking to someone

  591. who's so much better

  592. than them

  593. scares them away.

  594. And so,

  595. repeatedly,

  596. what I've seen

  597. in my life

  598. is these people

  599. who set themselves

  600. up as examples,

  601. as this perfect person

  602. that you should

  603. look up to

  604. and respect

  605. and aren't real

  606. with people

  607. that they're trying

  608. to work with

  609. end up alienating people

  610. rather than

  611. drawing them in.

  612. And what youth

  613. are looking for

  614. is people

  615. who will be real

  616. with them,

  617. who will show them

  618. that,

  619. no,

  620. I don't have it

  621. all figured out,

  622. no,

  623. I'm not perfect,

  624. but I'm learning

  625. and I'm trusting God

  626. and he is drawing me

  627. closer to him

  628. every day.

  629. And I think

  630. this is something

  631. that is especially

  632. true for parents.

  633. There's a guy

  634. named Reggie Joyner.

  635. He's a specialist

  636. in family ministry

  637. and he has a quote.

  638. He says,

  639. kids need to see

  640. their parents

  641. struggle with answers

  642. face their weaknesses,

  643. deal with real problems,

  644. admit when they're wrong,

  645. fight for their marriage

  646. and resolve personal conflict.

  647. They need to see these things

  648. because if they don't see

  649. these things,

  650. then when these issues

  651. come up in their own lives,

  652. they won't understand

  653. how to deal with them.

  654. And ultimately,

  655. this doesn't mean

  656. we, you know,

  657. take our two-year-old

  658. and explain to them

  659. every problem

  660. that's going on

  661. in terms of

  662. our struggle

  663. to stay pure

  664. in our relationship

  665. as parents

  666. or whatever.

  667. But it means that

  668. on an age-appropriate basis,

  669. you show

  670. the people around you,

  671. the youth that you're

  672. working with,

  673. whether that's your kids

  674. or whether that's

  675. someone you're mentoring

  676. or just someone

  677. you're having a conversation with,

  678. you demonstrate to them

  679. how the gospel

  680. is shaping and transforming

  681. your life,

  682. the situations in it,

  683. and the way that you react to it.

  684. Because like I said,

  685. ultimately,

  686. our goal is not

  687. just to have kids

  688. who do the right thing

  689. and have the right behavior,

  690. but kids who realize

  691. that they are sinners

  692. who are saved

  693. only by the grace of God.

  694. And what better way

  695. to show them

  696. this truth

  697. than to demonstrate to them

  698. that we are sinners

  699. who are in the process

  700. of being saved

  701. and transformed

  702. by God's grace

  703. and showing them

  704. what this looks like

  705. as it plays out

  706. in our actual daily lives.

  707. And that leads into

  708. the third thing

  709. that Proverbs says

  710. about how we interact

  711. with youth,

  712. and that's that

  713. the truths that we teach

  714. must constantly be said

  715. and lived

  716. in our daily lives.

  717. That ultimately,

  718. youth may listen

  719. to what we say,

  720. they're much more likely

  721. to live what we live.

  722. In this passage

  723. in Proverbs chapter 4,

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

  724. Solomon says,

  725. when I was a son

  726. to my father,

  727. Solomon's father

  728. was David,

  729. this great king in Israel.

  730. He says,

  731. when I was a son,

  732. when he was my father,

  733. he taught me

  734. and he said these things.

  735. We just listened

  736. to that scripture

  737. being read.

  738. And then he goes on

  739. and he repeats

  740. to his own son

  741. what David,

  742. his father,

  743. taught him.

  744. Now here's what we can see

  745. from that passage.

  746. If Solomon's taking

  747. what his father taught him

  748. and passing that teaching

  749. on to his son,

  750. it presumes that he's

  751. probably been living

  752. that teaching out

  753. in his own life

  754. for a number of years

  755. because he finds it

  756. valuable enough

  757. to pass on to his own son.

  758. And if he's been living

  759. this truth out

  760. in his life

  761. for this many years,

  762. that puts his son

  763. in this unique position

  764. to be able to look

  765. at this teaching

  766. and say,

  767. is it working?

  768. As I watch

  769. my father's life

  770. and he says

  771. that these things

  772. are true,

  773. are they true

  774. in his life?

  775. Does the pursuit

  776. of wisdom

  777. truly lead

  778. to the good life?

  779. Is it helping him

  780. find peace and joy

  781. or is he living

  782. in fear and anxiety

  783. because of these things?

  784. Is he just

  785. completely stressed out

  786. because the things

  787. that he's telling me

  788. are way too overbearing

  789. and hard?

  790. The son

  791. in this story

  792. has the opportunity

  793. to look at Solomon's life

  794. to see,

  795. hey,

  796. this is working for him.

  797. Hey,

  798. my dad's pursuing

  799. a relationship with God

  800. and it's actually

  801. bringing him peace.

  802. It's bringing him joy.

  803. It's transforming

  804. his relationships.

  805. I want that.

  806. And the son

  807. is in this unique position

  808. to view

  809. what's going on

  810. in his father's life

  811. and to live

  812. in response

  813. to that.

  814. See,

  815. the truth is

  816. that a lot of times

  817. the youth around us,

  818. they'll completely

  819. ignore what we say

  820. but they'll follow

  821. everything that we

  822. teach them

  823. through our actions.

  824. It's why

  825. if you're a parent

  826. and you're in an argument

  827. with your kid

  828. and things are getting

  829. heated and escalated

  830. and you yell out to them,

  831. well,

  832. you just need to calm down.

  833. Are they going to calm down?

  834. No,

  835. because your words

  836. say calm down

  837. but your actions say

  838. get angry,

  839. get heated,

  840. let's go.

  841. And they follow

  842. your examples

  843. or your actions

  844. rather than your words.

  845. And that's not just

  846. something that happens

  847. in an argument

  848. but it's something

  849. that happens

  850. in every area

  851. of your lives.

  852. If you

  853. or I

  854. say to the youth

  855. around us,

  856. hey,

  857. you need to follow God

  858. and then

  859. every waking minute

  860. that we have

  861. we spend at our jobs

  862. stockpiling money

  863. and getting more

  864. and more

  865. and more stuff

  866. rather than trusting

  867. in God

  868. and relying on Him,

  869. we're going to end up

  870. with a generation

  871. of youth

  872. that we taught

  873. to follow God,

  874. we told them

  875. they need to

  876. and it's important

  877. and instead

  878. they're out there

  879. working 80,

  880. 90,

  881. 100 hours a week

  882. stockpiling as much

  883. money as they can

  884. and worshipping money

  885. as their God

  886. instead.

  887. There's a guy

  888. named Christian Smith,

  889. he's a sociologist

  890. from Notre Dame,

  891. he's done a lot

  892. of research

  893. into youth culture

  894. and youth

  895. especially in the church

  896. and what they think

  897. about the gospel,

  898. what they believe

  899. about God

  900. and what they turn

  901. out like

  902. and what factors

  903. impact their growth

  904. and development

  905. as people

  906. and he has

  907. a quote

  908. that is,

  909. it's short,

  910. it's simple

  911. but it's incredibly deep

  912. and slightly scary.

  913. He says,

  914. when it comes

  915. to kids' faith,

  916. parents get what they are.

  917. When it comes

  918. to kids' faith,

  919. parents get what they are.

  920. If you want your kid

  921. to be a Christ follower

  922. but instead of

  923. following Christ

  924. with our own lives,

  925. we're going out

  926. and seeking

  927. approval through wealth,

  928. approval through comfort,

  929. we shouldn't be shocked

  930. when our kids go out

  931. and seek approval

  932. through wealth

  933. and approval

  934. through comfort.

  935. If we want our kids

  936. to follow Christ,

  937. we need to be

  938. Christ followers ourselves

  939. and we need to teach them

  940. that not just

  941. through our words,

  942. although words

  943. are very important

  944. but we need to also

  945. model it for them

  946. through our actions.

  947. and a lot of times

  948. the actions that we

  949. model for them

  950. are going to stick

  951. much better

  952. than the words

  953. that we use

  954. when we talk to them.

  955. And as I'm up here today

  956. and I'm speaking,

  957. I don't want you to think

  958. that I'm just speaking

  959. to parents

  960. and leaving everyone else

  961. off the hook

  962. because ultimately

  963. the job of training up

  964. the next generation of youth

  965. is a job

  966. that the Bible assigns

  967. to the entire church.

  968. Whether you're a young single

  969. like me

  970. who could have an impact

  971. on the teens

  972. and the children

  973. or maybe you're

  974. a parent here

  975. whose kids have grown up

  976. and gone off

  977. and moved out,

  978. you have a unique

  979. opportunity to impact

  980. other people

  981. in the church,

  982. maybe a newly married couple

  983. or maybe

  984. a new set of parents

  985. because ultimately

  986. like I've said repeatedly

  987. but it's an important point

  988. that I don't want us to miss,

  989. the goal is not

  990. just to have good kids

  991. who get good grades

  992. get good jobs,

  993. get a good family

  994. someday of their own,

  995. stay out of prison,

  996. stay off drugs.

  997. The goal is to create

  998. disciples of Christ

  999. and the Bible says

1000. that that is the job

  1001. of every Christian.

  1002. It's not specifically

  1003. the job

  1004. of only

1005. the parents in a family

  1006. to disciple their kids.

  1007. It is specifically

  1008. their job

  1009. to disciple

1010. and train their own kids

  1011. and they have

  1012. a unique opportunity

  1013. to do that

  1014. within their own family.

  1015. However,

  1016. it is the job

  1017. of every Christian

  1018. to make disciples.

  1019. Jesus'

  1020. last recorded words

1021. in the book of Matthew

  1022. are

1023. go into all the world

  1024. and make disciples

  1025. of all nations.

  1026. He gives that command

  1027. to his disciples

  1028. as the last thing

  1029. that he does.

  1030. He wants us

1031. to go into the world

  1032. to train up people

  1033. from wherever we are

  1034. to follow him

  1035. regardless of whether

  1036. they're our own children,

  1037. friends,

  1038. people that we're mentoring,

  1039. just other random people

  1040. around us,

1041. maybe people that we work with.

1042. our job is to make disciples

  1043. and that doesn't change

  1044. regardless of

  1045. the generational barriers.

  1046. Our job is

  1047. to make disciples.

  1048. And so,

  1049. for those of us

  1050. who aren't parents here

1051. or maybe who are parents

  1052. but who have kids

  1053. who have grown up

  1054. and moved out already,

  1055. we actually have

  1056. a unique opportunity

  1057. to impact the youth

  1058. around us.

  1059. Because,

  1060. let's face it,

  1061. we've all been teenagers

  1062. before.

  1063. We know that teenagers

  1064. will talk to people

  1065. who aren't their parents

  1066. about things

1067. that they won't talk to

  1068. with their own parents.

  1069. Yes?

  1070. I've got girl problems.

1071. I'm not talking to mom

  1072. about it.

  1073. I'm going to talk

  1074. to someone else

  1075. who actually understands

  1076. the world

  1077. because my parents

  1078. obviously don't.

  1079. I got a yeah

  1080. from the youth

  1081. and back.

  1082. They'll talk to us

  1083. about things

  1084. because

1085. if we disagree with them,

1086. that's not going to make

  1087. things awkward at home.

1088. Because if we tell them

  1089. to do something

  1090. and they

1091. really don't want to do it,

1092. they're not going to get

1093. in trouble for not doing

1094. what we tell them to do.

  1095. Although they probably will

  1096. if they don't do

  1097. what their parents

  1098. say to do.

  1099. They'll talk to us

  1100. because

  1101. a lot of times

  1102. kids think that

  1103. their parents are perfect

1104. and have it all together

  1105. and couldn't understand

  1106. if their own kids

  1107. had problems.

  1108. And so they have

  1109. this willingness

  1110. and vulnerability

  1111. to come to us

  1112. who aren't parents

  1113. and share with us

  1114. things that they

  1115. wouldn't share

  1116. with their own parents.

  1117. Or maybe they'll come

  1118. to parents

  1119. of their friends

1120. but not to their own parents.

  1121. And this gives us

  1122. a unique opportunity

  1123. to speak the gospel

  1124. into the situation

  1125. in their lives.

1126. To look at what's going on

  1127. and say,

  1128. hey,

1129. I see that you have

  1130. this problem.

1131. Here's what the Bible says

  1132. about how we should

  1133. approach this problem.

  1134. Here's what

  1135. the gospel says

  1136. about how

  1137. our approach

  1138. to this

  1139. should be different

  1140. than the world's

  1141. approach to this.

1142. And we have this opportunity

  1143. but the question is

  1144. will we be willing

  1145. to step outside

  1146. of our comfort zone

  1147. to invest in people

  1148. who otherwise

  1149. we probably wouldn't

  1150. want to invest in

  1151. and who

  1152. you know,

  1153. in the end

  1154. could leave us

  1155. heartbroken,

1156. could just be a total

  1157. pain to work with,

  1158. but who we could

  1159. impact amazingly

  1160. for God's kingdom.

  1161. And I think

  1162. for the parents

  1163. in here

  1164. in relation to this,

  1165. for those of you

  1166. who have teenagers

  1167. or who have had

  1168. teenagers before,

  1169. you know,

  1170. there comes a point

  1171. where kids sort of

  1172. stop talking to their

1173. parents a lot of times

  1174. about certain issues.

  1175. And they are willing

  1176. to talk to others

  1177. about these issues.

  1178. And so,

  1179. I think,

  1180. this is me personally,

  1181. not necessarily

  1182. the book of Proverbs

  1183. talking,

1184. but I think one of

  1185. the most amazing

  1186. things that Christian

  1187. parents can do

  1188. is introduce

  1189. their kids

  1190. to other

  1191. older Christians

  1192. who can be

  1193. a sounding board

  1194. when that time comes

  1195. that they're not

  1196. willing to talk

  1197. to their own parents.

  1198. That they can

  1199. go to,

  1200. you know,

  1201. say that

  1202. someday I'm a parent

  1203. and,

  1204. you know,

  1205. I introduce my kids

  1206. to my friends

1207. so that when my kids

  1208. reach a point

  1209. where they don't

1210. want to talk to me,

  1211. they have my friends

1212. that they can talk to

  1213. who I know

  1214. will point them

  1215. back to Christ,

  1216. who will point them

  1217. back to the gospel,

  1218. who will train them

  1219. in godliness.

  1220. Because,

  1221. like I said,

  1222. they're going to

  1223. talk to someone

  1224. about it.

  1225. I would much

  1226. rather have it

  1227. be someone

  1228. who I trust,

  1229. someone who I know,

  1230. someone who's going

  1231. to point them

  1232. to Christ,

  1233. rather than someone

  1234. who's going to

  1235. point them

  1236. away from him.

  1237. And I think

  1238. one of the greatest

  1239. resources that we

  1240. at Watermark

  1241. have for helping

  1242. parents connect

  1243. their youth

  1244. with other kids

  1245. or connect,

  1246. or,

  1247. sorry,

  1248. with other adults

  1249. is our community

  1250. groups.

  1251. Here at Watermark,

  1252. our community

  1253. groups are actually

  1254. geographically based,

  1255. not affinity based.

  1256. What that means

  1257. is when you join

  1258. a community group,

  1259. generally you're

  1260. in a community

  1261. group with people

  1262. who live near you,

  1263. rather than people

  1264. who are at the

  1265. same stage in life

  1266. as you.

  1267. So that means

  1268. for me,

  1269. my group is not

  1270. a group of singles,

  1271. but it's a group

  1272. of people who live

  1273. in the Saiying Poon

  1274. area.

  1275. It means that my

  1276. group doesn't just

  1277. have people who are

  1278. all in their 20s,

  1279. but we have people

  1280. all the way up

  1281. through probably

  1282. their 50s.

  1283. And it's not just

  1284. singles,

  1285. but we have

  1286. singles and

  1287. newlyweds and

  1288. parents of little

  1289. kids and parents

  1290. of teenagers,

  1291. and we have people

  1292. from all different

  1293. stages of life.

  1294. And if you bring

  1295. your kids into

  1296. this environment,

  1297. it introduces you,

  1298. it gives you the

  1299. ability to introduce

  1300. them to a variety

  1301. of different people

  1302. who are different

  1303. than you,

  1304. who they may feel

  1305. comfortable getting

  1306. to know and talking

  1307. with on issues that

  1308. they may not feel

  1309. as comfortable

  1310. talking to you

  1311. about.

  1312. And so,

  1313. you know,

  1314. we talk constantly

  1315. about the importance

  1316. of community groups

  1317. and how living out

  1318. the gospel in

  1319. community is important,

1320. and I think this is

1321. one of the big ways

  1322. where that is true.

  1323. And so,

  1324. I want to close

  1325. with asking us

  1326. how this specifically

  1327. relates to us

  1328. in Hong Kong.

1329. And one of the big

  1330. questions I want to

  1331. ask us is,

  1332. as we interact

  1333. with the youth

  1334. around us,

  1335. whether that's

  1336. our own kids

  1337. or other kids

  1338. that we interact

  1339. with on a daily

  1340. basis through

  1341. mentoring,

  1342. through running

  1343. into them on the

  1344. streets,

  1345. whatever,

  1346. which God

  1347. are we teaching

  1348. them to worship

  1349. as the real God?

  1350. Through our words

  1351. and through our

  1352. actions.

  1353. Which God

  1354. are we teaching

  1355. them to worship

  1356. as the real God?

  1357. Here at Watermark,

  1358. we talk a lot

  1359. about the idols

  1360. in our lives

  1361. and in the city.

  1362. And if you look

  1363. around at Hong Kong,

  1364. they have a lot

  1365. of different things

  1366. that they tell you

  1367. you should worship

  1368. as God.

  1369. They tell you

  1370. worship money

  1371. because it will

  1372. satisfy you.

  1373. If you get enough

  1374. in your bank account,

  1375. you will be happy.

  1376. They tell you

  1377. that you should

  1378. worship your social

  1379. status,

  1380. that being a member

  1381. at this club

  1382. is better than being

1383. a member at that club

1384. and so if you have

  1385. a membership

  1386. at this club,

  1387. you're in.

  1388. If not,

  1389. sorry.

  1390. They tell you

  1391. to worship education,

  1392. to spend eight hours

  1393. a night after school

  1394. studying,

  1395. studying,

  1396. studying,

  1397. working your hardest

  1398. so you can get

  1399. into the best university

  1400. so that someday

1401. you can get the best job.

  1402. They tell us

  1403. to worship stuff.

  1404. How many apartments

  1405. do you have?

  1406. How many cars

  1407. do you have?

  1408. How much more

  1409. can you get?

  1410. Because once you

  1411. get enough,

  1412. you'll be happy.

  1413. The city

  1414. constantly barrages

  1415. us with these messages

  1416. and if we're not

  1417. careful,

  1418. it's easy for us

1419. to slip into the mode

  1420. of just going along

1421. with what the city says

  1422. and teaching our youth

  1423. whether consciously

  1424. or subconsciously

  1425. to follow

  1426. what the city

  1427. tells us to follow.

  1428. To tell them

  1429. that their education

  1430. is truly the most

  1431. important thing,

  1432. not a relationship

  1433. with God.

  1434. To tell them

  1435. that getting money

  1436. truly is the most

  1437. important thing,

  1438. not ultimately

  1439. getting a relationship

  1440. with God.

  1441. And so I have

  1442. some diagnostic questions

  1443. that I'm going to

  1444. read off

  1445. that you can

  1446. ask yourself

  1447. on your free time

  1448. or after the service

  1449. or whenever

  1450. just to think about

  1451. what are we truly

  1452. teaching our youth

  1453. is the most

  1454. important thing

  1455. in life.

  1456. The first one is

  1457. what do I demonstrate

  1458. is the most important

  1459. thing in my life

  1460. through how I invest

  1461. my time?

  1462. What do I demonstrate

  1463. is the most important

  1464. thing in my life

  1465. through how I use

  1466. my time?

  1467. Am I showing them

  1468. that a pursuit

  1469. of Christ

  1470. is the most

  1471. important thing

  1472. spending time

  1473. reading my Bible

  1474. spending time

  1475. praying

  1476. spending time

  1477. with other Christians

  1478. or am I telling

  1479. them that the pursuit

1480. of money is the most

  1481. important thing

  1482. and working 100 hour

1483. weeks so that I can

1484. build up that nest egg?

  1485. The second question

  1486. what do I demonstrate

  1487. is the most important

  1488. thing in my life

  1489. through how I invest

  1490. my money?

  1491. Jesus says that

  1492. where our treasure is

  1493. there our heart

  1494. will be also.

  1495. what are we showing

  1496. them that they

  1497. should treasure?

  1498. Should they treasure

  1499. flats and just

  1500. collecting real estate?

  1501. Should they treasure

  1502. cars, clothes

  1503. or should they

  1504. treasure Christ?

  1505. And what are we

  1506. showing them through

1507. the way that we use

  1508. our money?

  1509. Next, what do I

  1510. demonstrate to them

  1511. is important through

  1512. how I treat others?

  1513. especially my spouse

  1514. them

  1515. our helper

  1516. and the others

  1517. that they see me

  1518. interacting with

  1519. on a daily basis.

  1520. Am I demonstrating

  1521. to them

  1522. that having power

  1523. is the most important

  1524. and so I take a

  1525. domineering stance

  1526. in all of my

  1527. relationships?

  1528. Or am I

  1529. demonstrating to them

  1530. that loving Christ

  1531. is the most important

  1532. thing and letting

  1533. that transform

  1534. the way that I

  1535. approach conflict

  1536. the way that I

  1537. approach friendships?

  1538. relationships.

1539. Next up, what do I

  1540. say should be the

  1541. most important

  1542. things in the

  1543. lives of my

  1544. children based on

  1545. how I require them

  1546. to use their time?

  1547. Am I requiring

  1548. them to spend

  1549. five hours a night

  1550. doing homework

  1551. after school

  1552. because their

  1553. education is the

  1554. most important

  1555. thing on earth?

  1556. Or am I

  1557. encouraging them

  1558. to use their

  1559. time in the

  1560. pursuit of Christ?

  1561. And I'm not

  1562. saying education

  1563. or jobs or any

  1564. of this is a

  1565. bad thing in and

  1566. of itself.

  1567. But I'm saying

  1568. that if it

  1569. takes the place

  1570. of Christ and

  1571. if it replaces

  1572. him, it becomes

  1573. a bad thing.

  1574. Next question,

  1575. what do I

  1576. discipline my

  1577. children for?

  1578. What does this

  1579. show about my

  1580. values?

  1581. Is my

  1582. discipline an

  1583. attempt to

  1584. teach them in

  1585. God's ways and

  1586. train them to

  1587. become a person

  1588. who fears the

  1589. Lord or is my

  1590. discipline an

  1591. attempt to get

  1592. them to conform

  1593. to societal norms?

  1594. Next up, what

  1595. do I encourage

  1596. the youth around

  1597. me to pursue in

  1598. life?

  1599. In my daily

  1600. conversations with

  1601. them, am I

  1602. telling them, hey,

  1603. you go, you get

  1604. lots of money, you

  1605. become the best

  1606. athlete ever, or am

  1607. I telling them to

  1608. pursue Christ?

  1609. And finally, what

1610. do I talk about the

  1611. most around the

  1612. youth in my life?

  1613. What am I

  1614. demonstrating is

  1615. important by

  1616. talking about these

  1617. things?

  1618. Again, the

  1619. things that we

  1620. talk about in our

  1621. conversations reveal

1622. a lot about who we

  1623. are and what's

  1624. important to us.

  1625. So what am I

  1626. saying is important

  1627. through my

  1628. conversations?

  1629. Back in ancient

  1630. Israel, there was a

  1631. passage of the

  1632. Bible that was

  1633. central to the

  1634. life of the

  1635. Israelites on a

  1636. daily basis.

  1637. It's called the

  1638. Shema.

  1639. It's in Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  1640. chapter 6.

  1641. I'm going to read

  1642. it quick.

  1643. It says,

  1644. Hear, O Israel,

  1645. the Lord our God,

  1646. the Lord is one.

  1647. You shall love the

  1648. Lord your God with

  1649. all your heart and

  1650. with all your soul

  1651. and with all your

  1652. might.

  1653. And these words that

  1654. I command you today

  1655. shall be on your

  1656. heart.

  1657. You shall teach them

  1658. diligently to your

  1659. children and shall

1660. talk of them when you

1661. sit in your house and

1662. when you walk by the

1663. way and when you lie

  1664. down and when you

  1665. rise.

  1666. You shall bind them

1667. as a sign on your

  1668. hand and they shall

  1669. be as frontlets between

  1670. your eyes.

  1671. You shall write them

  1672. on the doorposts of

  1673. your house and on

  1674. your gates.

  1675. In ancient Israel,

  1676. this passage was

  1677. central to their life

  1678. in following Christ.

  1679. The fathers would

  1680. repeat it to their

  1681. families every day in

  1682. an attempt to train

  1683. their kids and teach

  1684. them about God and

  1685. who he was.

  1686. And even today,

1687. this is central to the

  1688. life of the Jewish

  1689. faith.

1690. I have an uncle and

  1691. aunt who are Jewish

1692. and they have a four

  1693. year old daughter that

  1694. they adopted from

  1695. Vietnam and every night

  1696. before she goes to

  1697. bed,

  1698. they repeat this passage

  1699. to her.

  1700. And they teach her,

  1701. Hear, O Israel,

  1702. the Lord our God,

  1703. the Lord is one.

  1704. And you shall love

1705. the Lord your God with

  1706. all your heart,

  1707. with all your soul,

  1708. and with all your

  1709. might.

1710. When we look at the

  1711. book of Proverbs,

  1712. really all that's

  1713. happening is there's a

  1714. father who's taking

  1715. this teaching and

  1716. putting a little bit

  1717. more flesh and bones

  1718. on it,

  1719. who's teaching his

  1720. son,

  1721. the Lord your God,

  1722. the Lord is one.

  1723. Love the Lord your

  1724. God with all your

  1725. heart,

  1726. soul,

  1727. and might.

  1728. And then showing

  1729. them here's how that

  1730. love plays out in

  1731. your daily life and

  1732. affects and transforms

  1733. your relationships,

1734. the way that you use

  1735. your money,

1736. the way that you use

  1737. your time.

  1738. And I think that,

  1739. that again,

  1740. one of the most

  1741. important things that

1742. we can do is just

  1743. constantly repeating

  1744. this message,

  1745. to our youth.

  1746. Speaking to them,

  1747. living to them,

  1748. the Lord your God,

  1749. the Lord is one.

  1750. Love the Lord your

  1751. God with all your

  1752. heart,

  1753. soul,

  1754. and might.

  1755. And it seems so

  1756. simple,

  1757. it seems so

  1758. ordinary,

  1759. plain.

  1760. But ultimately,

  1761. God has been using

  1762. ordinary,

  1763. plain people,

  1764. doing ordinary,

  1765. plain things to

  1766. impact generations

  1767. that follow them

  1768. for millennium.

1769. and I think that if

  1770. we would take this

  1771. teaching,

  1772. take what he reveals

  1773. to us in Deuteronomy

  1774. and what he reveals

  1775. to us in Proverbs

  1776. and throughout the

  1777. rest of the scriptures

1778. and apply that to our

  1779. interaction with the

  1780. youth around us,

  1781. it would have an

  1782. incredible impact on

  1783. this next generation

  1784. that is coming up.

  1785. So let's close in

  1786. prayer,

  1787. and the band will

  1788. come back on stage

  1789. and close us out.

  1790. Dear Father,

  1791. thank you for today,

  1792. thank you for your

  1793. word,

1794. for giving it to us,

  1795. for teaching us

  1796. about how a

  1797. relationship with you

  1798. should impact our

  1799. relationships with

  1800. others,

  1801. specifically with the

  1802. youth in our lives

  1803. around us.

  1804. Thank you for the

  1805. gospel and the fact

  1806. that it changes

  1807. everything,

  1808. and that we can

  1809. raise up this next

  1810. generation,

  1811. to know you,

  1812. to follow you,

  1813. not because of our

  1814. own goodness,

  1815. but because of how

  1816. the gospel has

  1817. changed and

  1818. transformed us.

  1819. So please be with

  1820. us as we approach

  1821. the different youth

  1822. that we come into

  1823. contact with on a

  1824. daily basis.

  1825. Let our interaction

  1826. with them be marked

  1827. by your grace,

  1828. and not by simply

  1829. an attempt to make

  1830. them become better

  1831. people,

  1832. but an attempt to

  1833. see them truly love

  1834. you.

  1835. Thank you for your

  1836. love for us,

  1837. and in Jesus' name,

  1838. Amen.

  1839. Amen.

  1840. Amen.

  1841. Thanks, Eric.

  1842. We're going to

  1843. respond with a

  1844. song, and verse

  1845. two of the song

  1846. says,

  1847. I see a generation

  1848. rising up to take

  1849. their place.

  1850. With selfless faith,

  1851. with selfless faith,

  1852. I see a near revival

  1853. stirring as we pray

  1854. and seek.

  1855. we're on our knees.

1856. And as I was just

  1857. listening to the

  1858. sermon, I got to

  1859. confess, I probably

  1860. sang the song

  1861. probably close to

  1862. 50 times and

  1863. probably heard it

  1864. close to 100 times,

  1865. and it kind of

  1866. just hit me.

  1867. I never really sang

  1868. that second verse

  1869. with much conviction.

  1870. I don't know if I

  1871. ever really saw a

  1872. vision for a

  1873. generation that

  1874. would rise up to

  1875. take their place.

  1876. So, I don't know,

1877. my prayer is that I

  1878. would really see

1879. that in my heart as

  1880. I sing this and

  1881. going forward.

1882. And one thing that I

  1883. really like about the

  1884. word generation is that

  1885. it's so all-encompassing.

  1886. It's not like I see

1887. the Tam family, or I

  1888. see, that's my

1889. surname, or I see the

1890. Scott family, or I see

  1891. the Thomas family, or

  1892. whatnot, rising up.

  1893. It's like a

  1894. generation.

  1895. It's a generation

  1896. that crosses ethnicity,

  1897. gender, race, culture.

  1898. It's the universal

  1899. church of God.

  1900. And I think that's

  1901. really powerful, because

1902. it kind of makes me

  1903. see the youth, see

  1904. anyone younger than

1905. me as part of that

  1906. generation, that

  1907. potential generation.

  1908. And we know that

  1909. God no longer is

  1910. bringing salvation

  1911. through just the

  1912. nation of Israel.

  1913. Christ has come

  1914. through the nation of

  1915. Israel, and now

  1916. salvation and the

  1917. good news comes

  1918. through all of the

  1919. church.

  1920. I think that's just

  1921. amazing, incredible.

  1922. So let's just sing

  1923. that.

  1924. Feel free to stand

  1925. with me as you

  1926. respond with Hosanna.

  1927. I have just a couple

  1928. announcements for us.

1929. As we close, you can

1930. take a seat if you

  1931. want.

  1932. Here at Watermark, we

  1933. don't pass an offering

  1934. plate.

1935. We have boxes set up

  1936. around, so we have

  1937. one right there, one

  1938. right there, one out

  1939. that door as you

  1940. leave.

  1941. And we believe that

  1942. our giving should be

  1943. a response of worship

  1944. to what God has

1945. done for us and in

  1946. us.

  1947. And so we don't

  1948. want to feel like

  1949. we're forcing people

  1950. to give.

  1951. So we have these

  1952. boxes that you can

  1953. give as your own

  1954. personal response if

1955. you feel led to after

  1956. the service.

  1957. Also, we have a

  1958. prayer team that will

  1959. be set up after

  1960. service if you need

  1961. prayer.

  1962. Will they be back

  1963. there by that

  1964. pillar?

  1965. Right here?

  1966. They'll be right

  1967. here?

1968. So you can come up

1969. and get prayer if you

  1970. need prayer for

  1971. anything in your life.

  1972. Also, we have

  1973. VBS coming up for

  1974. the children.

  1975. It will be from

  1976. August 13th to 17th

  1977. in the mornings, and

  1978. it's for kids age 5

  1979. through 10.

1980. We will have sign up

  1981. right out at the

  1982. desk by the coffee

  1983. after service.

  1984. If you're interested,

  1985. please swing by that

  1986. desk or talk to

  1987. Melanie or Natalie for

  1988. more information about

  1989. that.

  1990. And community groups.

1991. If you are not a

  1992. part of a Watermark

  1993. community group, we

1994. would love for you to

  1995. join one.

  1996. We will be having

  1997. people at the desk

  1998. out there if you're

  1999. interested in signing

  2000. up for a community

  2001. group after the

  2002. service.

2003. So as we close, I'd

  2004. like to read Deuteronomy

  2005. 6, 4 through 9 again

  2006. for us.

  2007. It says,

  2008. Hear, O Israel, the

2009. Lord our God, the Lord

  2010. is one.

2011. You shall love the Lord

2012. your God with all your

  2013. heart, with all your

  2014. soul, with all your

  2015. might.

2016. And these words that I

  2017. command you today shall

  2018. be on your heart.

  2019. You shall teach them

  2020. diligently to your

  2021. children, and shall

2022. talk of them when you

2023. sit in your house, and

2024. when you walk by the

2025. way, and when you lie

  2026. down, and when you

  2027. rise.

2028. You shall bind them as

2029. a sign on your hand, and

2030. they shall be as frontlets

  2031. between your eyes.

2032. You shall write them on

  2033. the doorposts of your

  2034. house, and on your

  2035. gates.

  2036. You're dismissed.

  2037. Have a great week.

  2038. You're dismissed.

  2039. Have a great week.

  2040. Yeah.

  2041. Thanks.

  2042. Of course.
