  56. Hi, my name is Edmund and this morning I would like you to meet a few of the kids

  57. that we work with at ICM in the Nepalese community in Hong Kong.

  58. So...

  59. My name is Silas.

  60. My name is Kelly.

  61. My name is Anisha.

  62. My name is Rosanne.

  63. My name is Brasinta.

  64. My name is Sushmita.

  65. And today they will be leading you in the Advent Sharing today.

  66. This is the third Sunday of Advent.

  67. Each week of Advent, we prepare to celebrate Jesus' birth by lighting a candle

  68. and focusing on different themes of Christ's coming.

  69. So far, we have lit the candles of hope and peace.

  70. This week we light the candle of joy.

  71. In the time of Jesus, shepherds were looked down upon by society at large.

  72. They couldn't worship at the temple, give testimony in court, and were typically stereotyped as thieves by the general population.

  73. By many standards, their lives were lacking in joy.

  74. And one day at night, in the fields surrounding Bethlehem, an angel appeared to a group of shepherds announcing good news of great joy.

  75. Not just for the shepherds, but for the entire world.

  76. In our day, joy can be incredibly fleeting.

  77. Demands of jobs, school, and family can seem overwhelming.

  78. The culture of change in Hong Kong can leave us so disoriented and confused that it is hard to fix our eyes on Christ and find our joy in Him.

  79. Yet, Christ comes to us today to announce the same joy that was announced to the shepherds so long ago.

  80. This joy is not something based on our circumstances, but rather something that is rooted outside our circumstances.

  81. In the very person of Christ, God Himself in the flesh.

  82. Please join us reading the scripture passage found in Luke 2, verse 8-12.

    Luke 2:8–12

  83. The words are on the screen.

  84. And in the same regions there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  85. And angels of the Lord appeared to them, and the grolly of the Lord saw around them, and they will fill with great fear.

  86. And the angels said to them, Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  87. For unto you is the born this day, the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.

  88. And on this way we suffer you.

  89. You will find a baby wrapped in a swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.

  90. Let's pray.

  91. Dear Father, thank you for sending Jesus, our good news and our only true joy, as a baby in a manger.

  92. Thank you that He did not remain a baby in a manger, but that as He grew, He served you perfectly,

  93. ultimately giving His life in exchange for our sins.

  94. Thank you that in Him we can have perfect joy by being restored to a proper relationship with you.

  95. Please let us walk in this joy as we go throughout our everyday lives.

  96. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

  97. Great job.

  98. Hey, I'm going to pray for the kids and dismiss them, but I want to pray just for all the things going on in our world today.

  99. Just we had a lot of things happen in the States and there's things going on in the Middle East and just things that are hard to grasp, especially during this season.

  100. So I'm going to pray for us and just pray for the people of Newtown, Connecticut and the Middle East and just wherever these craziness is going on.

  101. Will you please join me in prayer?

  102. Father, we come before you today in sadness and deep sorrow as we reflect on the events that happened yesterday in Newtown, Connecticut.

  103. We know that you were there and that you're there now amongst those people.

  104. We know that you weep as you see the fallenness of your creation.

  105. We know that your original plan for us, your children involved none of this brokenness.

  106. We see so easily around us in our world as we walk through our day.

  107. We plead for your mercy, for your grace, for your forgiveness, for the selfishness, the pride, the arrogance and the brokenness that if we're honest, we see in our own hearts.

  108. Father, we pray for your comfort to the families of those children and adults that were lost and were killed in such a tragic event.

  109. Father, we pray for your family, the church, that we would step up to comfort, listen and help to be a friend, but more importantly, to share our friend, Jesus, to them.

  110. We pray in the weeks to come when so many questions are asked over and over, especially why and how, that people will say clearly that the problem is ultimately sin, that the problem is ultimately our separation from you, our creator, that until we understand this and deal with our own hearts, that nothing ever will truly change.

  111. We pray that you would use these events and others in the lives of those around us as we talk and ask questions and deal with these very difficult and hard events that we cannot truly explain.

  112. We pray, Lord, that they would see the solution, the true solution, which is your son.

  113. And we pray during this season as we celebrate the birth of your son, we're reminded throughout history, even in Scripture, that we're told as Herod heard that he was tricked by the Magi,

  114. that he went out into the environments of Bethlehem and slew every child, male, two years and younger.

  115. And historians tell us that 20 to 30 little boys were killed.

  116. Again, the reason why you came, to enter into the darkness and to the lostness and to bring sense and hope.

  117. So, Lord, we come before you as your people, desperate for you.

  118. Lord, we come before you as your people, desperate for you.

  119. We need you and we love you.

  120. We pray even now for these children up here and the children that are about to be released to their classes and for the teachers that will oversee them.

  121. And present your son, Jesus, to them.

  122. Lord, we pray that they would come to know you at an early age and they would fall in love with you.

  123. And that they would do mighty things.

  124. Mighty things for your kingdom.

  125. So, Lord, we come before you this morning and we plead.

  126. And we realize just how broken and lost we are.

  127. And how much we need your son, Jesus.

  128. We pray all these things in his incredible, powerful, and wonderful name.

  129. Amen.

  130. Okay.

  131. Watermark kids, you are dismissed.

  132. Youth are staying in here.

  195. And he will be called wonderful counselor, mighty God, everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  196. Of the greatness of his government and peace, there will be no end.

  197. This is God's word.

  198. Before we go into the message, let me pray with us.

  199. Father, we just stand amazed in seeing you again this Christmas in just a new light and a new perspective.

  200. And seeing how you are our peace and our love and our comfort.

  201. That you came as a baby.

  202. But that you are the mighty God, the wonderful counselor.

  203. That you are the one that brings peace, the one that is our perfect Father.

  204. And let's pray that today we would see you more clearly and we would see something new about you.

  205. And we pray all this in Christ's name.

  206. Good morning, Watermark.

  207. My name is Mike.

  208. I'm working with the university students here at the church.

  209. And I think I forgot my red shirt this morning.

  210. Hang on.

  211. It's my privilege not only to share God's word with you this morning.

  212. It's also my honor to share the last sermon ever here at Watermark.

  213. Just in case you have missed it, it's December 16th.

  214. And we have five more days until December 21st.

  215. And in case you still don't know what I'm talking about,

  216. there's some highly sophisticated research by the Mayan Native Americans.

  217. that the world as we know it will come to an end in just a few days.

  218. Anyways, if you were not aware of this fact when coming here this morning,

  219. you'll be happy to hear that there will be a great lunch buffet outside the church.

  220. So there will be some great food and fellowship before everything goes down the drain.

  221. With that said, and all the hype about the end of the world,

  222. the supposed end of the world,

  223. I actually went online and I did a little bit of research on Wikipedia.

  224. There's actually a list of predictions,

  225. major predictions throughout the history about the end of the world.

  226. There are more than 200 listed.

  227. And some are actually kind of interesting or funny.

  228. For example, did you know that Christopher Columbus predicted the end of the world for 1658?

  229. It didn't happen.

  230. I'm glad that he was at least right that he would go to India sailing to the West.

  231. I also found another really interesting prediction of the Millerites.

  232. The followers of Pastor Miller.

  233. And he predicted the end of the world for 1843.

  234. It obviously didn't happen either.

  235. And when the world didn't end, it became known as the Great Disappointment.

  236. As a disclaimer, to my knowledge,

  237. Pastor Miller had nothing to do with any Millers you may know.

  238. I actually felt kind of relieved.

  239. This week I got a calendar in my mail.

  240. And it was for my bank.

  241. It's a calendar for 2013.

  242. And if you know how much the banks tried to cut costs,

  243. they would not send out a calendar for the next year

  244. if the world would really come to an end.

  245. So that was good to know.

  246. So I think all this stuff about the end of the world

  247. is kind of getting a little crazy lately,

  248. like tsunamis and wars and the breakdown of the financial system.

  249. We are talking about all this.

  250. And there's even this TV show that came out,

  251. and I don't know whether you've seen it.

  252. It's on the National Geographic.

  253. It's called Doomsday Preppers.

  254. It tells the story of people that are so convinced

  255. that some kind of global disaster will hit

  256. that they spent all their money building bunkers

  257. and storing food and buying weapons.

  258. Their whole life literally starts to revolve

  259. around being prepared for some kind of nuclear attack

  260. or global pandemic or even the polar shift.

  261. I don't know how you feel about all this this morning.

  262. And it may not be the fear of the end of the world,

  263. but what are the fears that you've been dealing with lately?

  264. What are the worries that you carry with you

  265. these weeks and these months and this past year?

  266. Maybe instead of the end of the world,

  267. it's just the end of your job or passing an exam just now

  268. and maybe your finances or keeping your scholarship.

  269. Maybe it's a fear of relationships breaking apart

  270. in your family or in your marriage.

  271. And then maybe these worries that just carry on through your life

  272. and maybe it's your health.

  273. Wherever you are this morning,

  274. what is it that you wrestle with,

  275. that you carry with you?

  276. And how are you preparing to face?

  277. How are you prepping for this darkness?

  278. And when this darkness hits in your life,

  279. who do you turn to?

  280. What or who is your savior

  281. when you face the darkness?

  282. Today we're actually looking at a passage

  283. that talks about people that are facing darkness

  284. and they're facing despair.

  285. And the passage also talks about

  286. how they are dealing with that,

  287. where they're turning to to find hope and peace

  288. amidst all these troubles that they are facing.

  289. The passage is from Isaiah

  290. and you've heard it read just now.

  291. And it's set in the southern kingdom of Judah

  292. in the 8th century before Christ came.

  293. It was a time of darkness and despair for the people.

  294. And Eric shared a little bit about

  295. the whole journey of the Israelites last week.

  296. If you haven't been here,

  297. let me just briefly look into that.

  298. Isaiah experienced the northern kingdom of Israel

  299. being attacked and conquered

  300. and invaded by the Assyrians.

  301. The Assyrians were the superpower of that time.

  302. And they left devastation and destruction

  303. wherever they went.

  304. What do you do when you're facing destruction?

  305. You try to save yourself.

  306. And that's exactly what they're trying to do.

  307. They try to respond to that.

  308. When we are facing our worries and our fears,

  309. we're looking for something or someone

  310. who will come and save us.

  311. So King Ahaz of Judah decided

  312. not to help the Israelites

  313. and actually sided with the Assyrians.

  314. They're a strong force.

  315. So we want to avoid our own destruction.

  316. So politics became the way to get out of it.

  317. But now in this passage, some years later,

  318. politics weren't working anymore.

  319. The Assyrians were again at the doorstep of Judah.

  320. They were at the brink of destruction.

  321. The new king, Hezekiah,

  322. he was now wrestling with what to do

  323. because politics had failed

  324. and these Assyrians were right there.

  325. So something this passage teaches us

  326. is that we always look for a savior.

  327. We put our hope in that savior.

  328. That this savior will come

  329. and help us overcome

  330. our problems and our worries.

  331. I think the structure is always kind of like the same.

  332. It's kind of the story that repeats itself.

  333. So some kind of problem occurs.

  334. Some kind of worry arises in our lives

  335. and then this problem grows bigger.

  336. It builds up in anxiousness

  337. and then we are suddenly realizing

  338. that we are getting to the point of despair

  339. and we rewrite the story.

  340. We are trying to invite this savior

  341. to come into our lives

  342. and then we hope that the savior

  343. will somehow help us solve the problem.

  344. So we start to live in that illusion

  345. that this savior will work.

  346. We desperately want it to work.

  347. But at one point,

  348. our little savior will fail us.

  349. It will fall apart.

  350. When facing the Syrian superpower

  351. and seeing the destruction and devastation

  352. they would bring,

  353. King Ahas turned to politics.

  354. Politics worked for a while

  355. and it gave the illusion

  356. that they could arrange with their wisdom

  357. and their smart ways

  358. bring peace.

  359. But now, after a while,

  360. it all falls apart

  361. and so it is with us.

  362. So it is with us

  363. that we come

  364. and look at the darkness and the lies

  365. and we look for something that can save us.

  366. There's a story of a savior

  367. I heard this week

  368. that I found pretty interesting.

  369. His name is Arrigo.

  370. He's an Italian

  371. and he's an Italian soccer fan.

  372. He's a fan of the soccer club,

  373. the Serie A,

  374. the first league club,

  375. Udine.

  376. Now,

  377. Udine

  378. is facing some darkness.

  379. I'm trying to ease in with an example

  380. that is not as heavy loaded.

  381. So,

  382. if you like soccer,

  383. so Udine

  384. has been doing pretty well

  385. the last 10 years

  386. and after 14 games

  387. into the season

  388. they were pretty close to relegation.

  389. And people got a little worried

  390. and the fans were pretty upset.

  391. But Arrigo is a pretty big fan.

  392. And so he made his way

  393. 400 kilometers to the away game

  394. against direct opponents.

  395. It's a pretty big game

  396. and he goes

  397. and so there's a stadium

  398. and they expect about 30,000 people.

  399. And so Arrigo comes in

  400. and so in the soccer stadium

  401. they block off like one section

  402. for the fans of the guests.

  403. You know,

  404. like all this craziness in Europe

  405. with soccer fans.

  406. And so they block off

  407. this whole section

  408. that only the guest fans

  409. will be there.

  410. So for several thousand people

  411. they block off this section

  412. for the Udine fans

  413. and Arrigo shows up.

  414. It's 10 minutes before the game

  415. and then he walks in

  416. and then he sees

  417. like 30,000 people

  418. and he walks into the guest block

  419. and he notices

  420. it's only him.

  421. And it's the real story.

  422. So he goes there

  423. and he goes down

  424. and it's just until 10 minutes

  425. until the game starts.

  426. There will be some people show up.

  427. So he goes down to the fence

  428. and puts his Udine flag up there

  429. and waits

  430. and the teams come out

  431. and the ref comes out

  432. and the game starts.

  433. And he is still

  434. utterly alone

  435. in this whole section

  436. for thousands of people.

  437. It's the first time

  438. in history

  439. of any of the major leagues

  440. in the whole of Europe

  441. that only one fan

  442. showed up

  443. of the whole team.

  444. Now Arrigo

  445. wasn't intimidated.

  446. Even the 30,000

  447. were cheering against him

  448. and he would just

  449. cheer back by himself

  450. at one point

  451. people started bringing him coffee

  452. because they had pity with him.

  453. But the amazing thing was

  454. his team won the game

  455. 2-0.

  456. And he was

  457. in all the newspapers

  458. with a big picture

  459. with his one flag

  460. in this huge stand

  461. and it says

  462. the savior of Udine.

  463. Now

  464. he worked for a while.

  465. I'm not sure

  466. whether he will work

  467. for a long time.

  468. We have this saying

  469. in Europe

  470. that the spectators

  471. are the 12th men.

  472. So for the Americans

  473. we have 11 people

  474. playing soccer

  475. but when the spectators

  476. cheering their team on

  477. they are like the 12th men.

  478. Arrigo is now celebrated

  479. as the 12th man

  480. of his team

  481. bringing them to success.

  482. Now in two weeks

  483. they would probably

  484. play another game.

  485. I don't know

  486. whether it's a winter break

  487. at that point

  488. but the next time

  489. they play away

  490. I wonder

  491. whether he will

  492. be a savior

  493. that will again

  494. bring them to victory

  495. or whether he will

  496. fail them.

  497. But the newspapers

  498. were all about him

  499. and being the savior

  500. of the club.

  501. And in Hong Kong

  502. we have our own

  503. saviors

  504. that we rely on.

  505. When we face

  506. the darkness

  507. of losing jobs

  508. or when we worry

  509. about providing

  510. for our needs

  511. maybe it's the savior

  512. of good grades.

  513. The good grades

  514. there are so many students

  515. right now

  516. in the midst of exams

  517. maybe when I get

  518. my GPA up

  519. then that will give me

  520. a good job

  521. and that will be

  522. my savior

  523. because it will give me

  524. the money that I need

  525. to secure my life.

  526. But again

  527. what happens

  528. when that savior fails

  529. when that good job

  530. that you have

  531. suddenly leads you

  532. into depression?

  533. or when the long

  534. work hours

  535. destroy your family?

  536. What if the stress

  537. of life

  538. just makes you sick

  539. and the saviors

  540. of Hong Kong

  541. suddenly stop working?

  542. In my life

  543. my family lived

  544. a story with

  545. a lot of saviors

  546. as well

  547. a lot of false saviors.

  548. So my parents

  549. grew up in Germany

  550. after the Second World War

  551. and when the war

  552. came to an end

  553. they had to both

  554. flee from where

  555. they lived.

  556. My mom lived

  557. in a small

  558. German settlement

  559. close to the Black Sea

  560. and they had to

  561. pack everything up

  562. and leave.

  563. And my dad

  564. actually lived in

  565. what nowadays

  566. is western Poland

  567. and when the Russian

  568. occupying forces came

  569. they packed their

  570. stuff and

  571. they made their way

  572. west.

  573. but under the

  574. occupying forces

  575. his dad

  576. actually got shot

  577. when he was 14.

  578. So they had seen

  579. enough pain

  580. in their lives

  581. and they hoped

  582. that they could

  583. just give us

  584. a different

  585. a happier world

  586. a different story.

  587. They wanted for us

  588. to kind of live

  589. in a world

  590. of peace

  591. and the saviors

  592. they turned to

  593. is their own hard work

  594. that they could

  595. provide a better future

  596. and that they could

  597. keep that story together

  598. and just avoid

  599. the pain for us

  600. that they had experienced.

  601. And there's one story

  602. that lately

  603. came up to me

  604. and I was 15 years

  605. I played in a

  606. handball club actually

  607. that's my sport.

  608. So we had this

  609. tournament

  610. so being 15

  611. we played this game

  612. and afterwards

  613. I started talking

  614. with a caretaker

  615. and the caretaker

  616. had known my family

  617. for a while

  618. and as I'm talking

  619. with him

  620. he says

  621. how is your mom's

  622. sister doing?

  623. And I said

  624. oh you mean

  625. her brother?

  626. No her sister.

  627. I said no

  628. my mom only

  629. has a brother.

  630. No I mean

  631. Erica

  632. her sister.

  633. And we kind of

  634. ended the conversation

  635. I went home

  636. and I told my mom

  637. I had this strange

  638. conversation

  639. with this caretaker

  640. today

  641. who talked about

  642. you having

  643. the sister Erica

  644. and my mom

  645. got quiet

  646. and she said

  647. I actually do

  648. have a sister

  649. and her name

  650. is Erica.

  651. But when she

  652. was six years old

  653. she had a brain

  654. bleeding

  655. and it left her

  656. disabled

  657. and she cannot

  658. talk

  659. and she can

  660. barely move

  661. so we put her

  662. in a home

  663. but we didn't

  664. want you guys

  665. to worry about it.

  666. And I was very

  667. upset

  668. that all this

  669. was kept from me

  670. but it was their

  671. way of dealing

  672. with pain

  673. and writing

  674. this different

  675. story that

  676. the savior

  677. had become

  678. to hide things

  679. and to just

  680. write this

  681. different story

  682. that is happy

  683. and last

  684. week I got

  685. a phone call

  686. from my mom

  687. and she

  688. said oh

  689. Erica

  690. just died

  691. age 68

  692. so for 60

  693. years her

  694. savior of

  695. hiding away

  696. to keep

  697. the happy

  698. family

  699. was kind

  700. of working

  701. but deep

  702. down

  703. it was all

  704. fake

  705. and that

  706. savior just

  707. wasn't true.

  708. Now

  709. this is

  710. my story

  711. of

  712. what I've

  713. seen

  714. what fake

  715. saviors do

  716. and I could

  717. probably go on

  718. with countless

  719. examples

  720. and you probably

  721. as you look

  722. at your lives

  723. you have

  724. countless

  725. ways of

  726. how you

  727. could see

  728. these fake

  729. saviors

  730. being alive

  731. in your

  732. lives

  733. it may be

  734. that you

  735. feel

  736. worthless

  737. and your

  738. savior

  739. has become

  740. your hard

  741. work

  742. if I just

  743. work hard

  744. and I can

  745. build up

  746. respect

  747. and I can

  748. achieve

  749. something

  750. and I can

  751. build up

  752. my own

  753. worth

  754. but at

  755. one point

  756. you'll realize

  757. that that

  758. that savior

  759. won't work

  760. and it still

  761. leaves you

  762. empty

  763. maybe

  764. the darkness

  765. you are

  766. facing

  767. is loneliness

  768. and the

  769. savior

  770. becomes

  771. people

  772. maybe

  773. you're

  774. putting

  775. that hope

  776. in that

  777. one person

  778. that one

  779. day will

  780. come to

  781. fulfill you

  782. and make

  783. you complete

  784. or

  785. if I'm

  786. just

  787. surrounding

  788. myself

  789. with

  790. enough

  791. people

  792. then

  793. the

  794. loneliness

  795. will

  796. disappear

  797. but if we

  798. put our

  799. hope

  800. in people

  801. as our

  802. savior

  803. we will

  804. at one

  805. point

  806. be left

  807. disappointed

  808. so what

  809. will you say

  810. is your

  811. darkness

  812. today

  813. and this

  814. year

  815. what are

  816. the saviors

  817. that you

  818. have put

  819. your trust

  820. in

  821. the

  822. people

  823. of

  824. Judah

  825. had

  826. put

  827. their

  828. hopes

  829. in

  830. false

  831. saviors

  832. now here

  833. it was

  834. politics

  835. and the

  836. savior

  837. wasn't

  838. working

  839. anymore

  840. and now

  841. in the

  842. midst

  843. of their

  844. shattered

  845. hopes

  846. Isaiah

  847. is speaking

  848. about a

  849. different

  850. savior

  851. a different

  852. kind

  853. of hope

  854. in verse

  855. 2

  856. it says

  857. the people

  858. walking

  859. in darkness

  860. have seen

  861. a great

  862. light

  863. on those

  864. living in

  865. the land

  866. of deep

  867. darkness

  868. a light

  869. has dawned

  870. so in

  871. the midst

  872. of their

  873. despair

  874. Isaiah

  875. is pointing

  876. the people

  877. to a bright

  878. future

  879. to the

  880. hope

  881. of a

  882. new

  883. savior

  884. one that

  885. can truly

  886. save them

  887. from their

  888. darkness

  889. that can

  890. truly bring

  891. light

  892. into their

  893. darkness

  894. and then

  895. he continues

  896. with the

  897. prophecy

  898. and if you

  899. have been

  900. there for

  901. Michael

  902. Ramson's

  903. talk

  904. yesterday

  905. he talked

  906. about

  907. a prophet

  908. being like

  909. a reverse

  910. historian

  911. not someone

  912. that

  913. looks ahead

  914. in history

  915. but

  916. looks back

  917. at history

  918. to write

  919. but he

  920. actually looks

  921. ahead

  922. and gives

  923. a prophecy

  924. a promise

  925. about what's

  926. still to

  927. come

  928. and this

  929. is what

  930. we're seeing

  931. here about

  932. Isaiah

  933. for us

  934. for to us

  935. a child is

  936. born

  937. to us

  938. a son

  939. is given

  940. and the

  941. government

  942. will be

  943. on his

  944. shoulders

  945. and he

  946. will be

  947. called

  948. wonderful

  949. counselor

  950. mighty

  951. God

  952. everlasting

  953. father

  954. prince

  955. of peace

  956. of the

  957. greatness

  958. of his

  959. government

  960. and peace

  961. there

  962. will be

  963. no end

  964. what Isaiah

  965. is pointing

  966. the people

  967. to and what

  968. he's pointing

  969. us to is

  970. is that

  971. great story

  972. about that

  973. true savior

  974. that real

  975. savior

  976. he's pointing

  977. us to

  978. Jesus

  979. and he's

  980. telling his

  981. people

  982. that one

  983. day a

  984. child will

  985. be born

  986. and that

  987. child will

  988. bring salvation

  989. if you have

  990. been around

  991. churches before

  992. it's over

  993. Christmas time

  994. then you probably

  995. have heard this

  996. passage before

  997. it's read a lot

  998. through Christmas

  999. when we anticipate

  1000. the celebration

  1001. of Christ's birth

  1002. and you may

  1003. have heard

  1004. messages about

  1005. the savior

  1006. being full

  1007. of wisdom

  1008. and mighty

  1009. and that

  1010. he is the

  1011. perfect father

  1012. and that

  1013. he brings

  1014. true peace

  1015. but today

  1016. I want to

  1017. focus on

  1018. what follows

  1019. in that

  1020. passage

  1021. it actually

  1022. says in

  1023. verse 7

  1024. and of the

  1025. greatness of

  1026. his government

  1027. and peace

  1028. there will

  1029. be no

  1030. end

  1031. the savior

  1032. that is

  1033. coming

  1034. as a

  1035. child

  1036. that Jesus

  1037. whose birth

  1038. we are about

  1039. to celebrate

  1040. of his

  1041. greatness

  1042. of his

  1043. government

  1044. and peace

  1045. there will

  1046. be no

  1047. end

  1048. it's not

  1049. a temporary

  1050. savior

  1051. like so many

  1052. saviors we

  1053. turn to

  1054. that work

  1055. for a while

  1056. but there

  1057. will be

  1058. no end

  1059. the hope

  1060. and peace

  1061. we find

  1062. him

  1063. is eternal

  1064. I think

  1065. this is

  1066. this amazing

  1067. story

  1068. this is what

  1069. Isaiah is

  1070. inviting us

  1071. into

  1072. and it's

  1073. that story

  1074. of that

  1075. eternal

  1076. kingdom

  1077. that is still

  1078. to come

  1079. that eternal

  1080. hope

  1081. that he

  1082. gives us

  1083. that glimpse

  1084. of that

  1085. future

  1086. that this

  1087. creator

  1088. of everything

  1089. who has

  1090. always been

  1091. and who

  1092. always will

  1093. be

  1094. is the

  1095. savior

  1096. to put

  1097. our trust

  1098. in

  1099. now this

  1100. child

  1101. being born

  1102. will also

  1103. one day

  1104. die on

  1105. the cross

  1106. but to

  1107. show the

  1108. world

  1109. that he

  1110. is eternal

  1111. and that

  1112. there is

  1113. no end

  1114. to his

  1115. power

  1116. he conquers

  1117. death

  1118. and he

  1119. rises from

  1120. the dead

  1121. to show

  1122. us that

  1123. in his

  1124. power

  1125. we can

  1126. put our

  1127. hope

  1128. and find

  1129. peace

  1130. that is

  1131. not

  1132. limited

  1133. even in

  1134. this

  1135. life

  1136. he is

  1137. the one

  1138. that speaks

  1139. into our

  1140. worries

  1141. and our

  1142. fears

  1143. into our

  1144. sickness

  1145. and he

  1146. even speaks

  1147. into our

  1148. fear of

  1149. even our

  1150. own death

  1151. and gives

  1152. us a

  1153. perspective

  1154. on life

  1155. that is

  1156. bigger than

  1157. anything

  1158. that we

  1159. could think

  1160. of in

  1161. this

  1162. world

  1163. now this

  1164. is the

  1165. part where

  1166. we could

  1167. stop and

  1168. just look

  1169. at this

  1170. future

  1171. promise

  1172. that story

  1173. that culminates

  1174. in that

  1175. kingdom

  1176. that is

  1177. still to

  1178. come

  1179. but then

  1180. I'm

  1181. realizing

  1182. that when

  1183. I first

  1184. explored

  1185. Christianity

  1186. I sometimes

  1187. viewed that

  1188. as kind of

  1189. like a little

  1190. fluffy religious

  1191. concept

  1192. it's like

  1193. there's this

  1194. future hope

  1195. like I know

  1196. that you are

  1197. suffering right

  1198. now and there

  1199. are pains

  1200. right now in

  1201. this world

  1202. but if you

  1203. just have

  1204. hope that

  1205. one day it

  1206. will all be

  1207. better

  1208. then that's

  1209. all you

  1210. need

  1211. and what is

  1212. amazing I think

  1213. about this

  1214. passage is

  1215. that it's

  1216. not just

  1217. a future

  1218. hope that

  1219. is being

  1220. offered here

  1221. but there

  1222. is a

  1223. present reality

  1224. to the

  1225. Savior that

  1226. is presented

  1227. here

  1228. for Isaiah

  1229. and his

  1230. people

  1231. there is a

  1232. prophecy about

  1233. this child

  1234. that will

  1235. one day in

  1236. several hundred

  1237. years come

  1238. and they don't

  1239. even know

  1240. about it

  1241. but what

  1242. happens when

  1243. you read

  1244. the accounts

  1245. of Kings

  1246. and the

  1247. Chronicles

  1248. you'll see

  1249. that actually

  1250. God shows

  1251. up to

  1252. them

  1253. when the

  1254. temporary

  1255. Savior of

  1256. politics

  1257. failed

  1258. and the

  1259. people

  1260. turned to

  1261. the true

  1262. Savior

  1263. God shows

  1264. up and

  1265. he defeats

  1266. the Assyrians

  1267. the superpower

  1268. of the time

  1269. 180,000

  1270. strong army

  1271. is defeated

  1272. Assyria is

  1273. scrambled

  1274. it will never

  1275. rise to be

  1276. a world power

  1277. again

  1278. and this is

  1279. the way that

  1280. God shows

  1281. up to the

  1282. Assyrians

  1283. at that time

  1284. now when

  1285. Christ is born

  1286. when this

  1287. little baby

  1288. comes

  1289. and we

  1290. see God

  1291. in flesh

  1292. coming

  1293. we also

  1294. don't see

  1295. him only

  1296. talk about

  1297. this future

  1298. kingdom

  1299. but he

  1300. says

  1301. there is

  1302. a kingdom

  1303. that is

  1304. to come

  1305. but it's

  1306. also here

  1307. that as

  1308. he comes

  1309. the kingdom

  1310. comes and

  1311. he begins

  1312. to heal

  1313. and restore

  1314. lives as

  1315. he walks

  1316. around

  1317. Galilee

  1318. and Israel

  1319. and so we

  1320. see that

  1321. hope for the

  1322. future but

  1323. we see him

  1324. acting and

  1325. intervening in

  1326. the lives

  1327. right where

  1328. he is

  1329. and when

  1330. this Jesus

  1331. rises from

  1332. the dead

  1333. and is

  1334. about to

  1335. ascend to

  1336. heaven

  1337. he says

  1338. I will

  1339. always be

  1340. with my

  1341. people

  1342. he will

  1343. always be

  1344. with us

  1345. so this

  1346. hope is

  1347. not just

  1348. about one

  1349. that is

  1350. about that

  1351. kingdom

  1352. that is to

  1353. come but

  1354. it is a

  1355. hope that

  1356. the Savior

  1357. is here

  1358. speaking into

  1359. our lives

  1360. and I

  1361. want to

  1362. close with

  1363. one of

  1364. the passages

  1365. in the

  1366. book of

  1367. Acts

  1368. so

  1369. when I

  1370. see Christ

  1371. speaking to

  1372. the people

  1373. at his

  1374. time and

  1375. they have

  1376. seen the

  1377. miracles and

  1378. they have

  1379. seen the

  1380. Savior not

  1381. just talking

  1382. about this

  1383. kingdom but

  1384. as he

  1385. begins to

  1386. shape lives

  1387. and show

  1388. them that he

  1389. wants to

  1390. restore lives

  1391. right there

  1392. they begin to

  1393. form communities

  1394. and so in

  1395. Acts 2

  1396. 44 we have a

  1397. picture of a

  1398. community that

  1399. understood what

  1400. he was talking

  1401. about let me

  1402. read that to

  1403. you in the

  1404. bulletin as

  1405. well in

  1406. Acts 2

  1407. 44 it

  1408. actually says

  1409. all the

  1410. believers now

  1411. don't just

  1412. read over that

  1413. all the

  1414. believers every

  1415. single one of

  1416. the believers

  1417. who had put

  1418. their hope in

  1419. Jesus as the

  1420. one true

  1421. Savior all the

  1422. believers were

  1423. together and

  1424. they had

  1425. everything in

  1426. common they

  1427. sold their

  1428. property possessions

  1429. they gave to

  1430. anyone who

  1431. had need and

  1432. every day they

  1433. continued to meet

  1434. together in the

  1435. temple courts they

  1436. broke bread in

  1437. their homes and

  1438. they ate

  1439. together with

  1440. glad and

  1441. sincere hearts

  1442. praising God

  1443. and enjoying the

  1444. favor of all the

  1445. people and the

  1446. Lord added to

  1447. their number daily

  1448. those who are

  1449. being saved I

  1450. don't know about

1451. you but I look at

  1452. this passage and

  1453. I'm incredibly

  1454. challenged but I'm

  1455. incredibly encouraged

  1456. that this community

  1457. that saw Christ

  1458. actively intervening

  1459. in their lives

1460. what I see them do

  1461. is that they begin

  1462. to bury all their

  1463. little saviors

  1464. now when we

  1465. think about what

  1466. that would mean

  1467. for us

  1468. they are

  1469. burying their

  1470. savior of

  1471. personal space

  1472. they actually

  1473. invite everybody

  1474. into their lives

  1475. they're burying

  1476. their savior of

  1477. material possession

  1478. they say everything

  1479. I have I give it

1480. to the I share it

  1481. with the community

  1482. I invite the

  1483. community to

  1484. participate in that

  1485. they bury their

  1486. savior of putting

  1487. their work and

  1488. their lives and

  1489. their interests and

  1490. their goals first

  1491. but instead they

  1492. center everything

  1493. around coming

  1494. together daily and

  1495. worshiping the one

  1496. savior

1497. now I look at this

  1498. picture and I

  1499. wonder what does it

  1500. mean for us

  1501. what does it take

1502. for us to be a

  1503. community that lives

  1504. in a way that

  1505. people see at the

  1506. Christian community

  1507. and knowing that we

  1508. are worshiping one

  1509. savior that people

  1510. would be daily

  1511. added and attracted

  1512. to that way of

  1513. life that there's

  1514. this hope in the

  1515. savior that is

  1516. bigger than all the

  1517. other saviors and

1518. as I look at my

  1519. life I see I have

  1520. so many little

  1521. saviors in my life

  1522. that keep me from

  1523. living this so I

  1524. think this Christmas

  1525. the challenge that I

  1526. want to take on

  1527. myself and that I

  1528. want to put out

1529. there for us as a

  1530. community is what

1531. does it take for us

  1532. what are the steps

1533. that we want to take

  1534. in living with

  1535. Christ as the only

  1536. savior what does

  1537. it mean for your

  1538. life personally

  1539. whether it's your

  1540. studies your work

  1541. your family where

  1542. have you built up

  1543. savior that stop you

  1544. from lifting up the

  1545. one true savior the

  1546. savior is the one

  1547. who is a wonderful

  1548. counselor he's the

  1549. one that all our

  1550. wisdom comes from

  1551. he's the mighty

  1552. God he has the

  1553. power to change

  1554. our life's

  1555. serving service

  1556. he is the

  1557. everlasting father

  1558. the perfect father

1559. and he is the one

  1560. that brings true

  1561. peace and his

  1562. kingdom will have

  1563. no end so I

  1564. want to pray with

1565. us and just as we

  1566. go into this

  1567. Christmas season to

  1568. reflect on on this

  1569. savior and looking

  1570. at examining our

  1571. own hearts and

  1572. where we are

  1573. wrestling with

  1574. allowing him to be

  1575. the one true savior

1576. in our lives let me

  1577. pray with us

  1578. father I just want

  1579. to confess first

  1580. that I have a lot

  1581. of small saviors in

1582. my life that I put

  1583. my hope in and

  1584. in an increasing

  1585. rental market and

  1586. there are the

  1587. worries that come up

  1588. and we are clinging

  1589. to our own security

1590. and we want to be in

  1591. control of our own

1592. lives and I see that

1593. in my life all over

  1594. again and everywhere

1595. so father as we just

  1596. go into this Christmas

1597. season may you be the

  1598. prince of peace the

  1599. one that isn't just a

  1600. small little savior but

1601. that we would turn to

1602. the one true king who

  1603. brings peace who

  1604. points us to this

  1605. eternal kingdom that

1606. is still to come in

  1607. which everything will

1608. be restored but may we

1609. also see that that you

1610. are the one who longs

1611. to be our savior now

  1612. that you would reach

  1613. into the worries and

  1614. despair and the

  1615. darkness of every

  1616. single person here you

1617. know where we all are

1618. father so I just pray

  1619. that that you would

  1620. touch people just where

  1621. they are and soften

  1622. hearts to invite you

  1623. into being the one

  1624. true savior and I

  1625. know that so many

  1626. times even when we

  1627. have walked with you

  1628. for years and years

1629. we begin to rely on

  1630. ourselves again so

1631. much and so I just

  1632. pray that this Christmas

  1633. time we would again

1634. see the miracle of you

  1635. stepping into history

1636. to be our savior I

  1637. pray this in Christ's

  1638. name amen

  1639. happy birthday to you

  1640. happy birthday to you

  1641. happy birthday dear Jesus

  1642. happy birthday to you

  1643. happy birthday Jesus

  1644. happy birthday Jesus

  1645. I'm so glad it's Christmas

  1646. happy birthdaying

  1647. happy birthday dear teachers

  1648. happy birthday Jesus

  1649. happy birthday Jesus

  1650. happy birthday euro

  1651. happy birthday Jesus

  1652. happy birthdayertos

1653. All the carols and bells

1654. In the hall that they swell

  1655. And all above you

  1656. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1657. Jesus, I love you

  1658. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1659. I'm so glad it's Christmas

1660. All the tinsel and lights

1661. And the presents are nice

1662. But the real gift is you

  1663. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1664. I'm so glad it's Christmas

1665. All the carols and bells

1666. In the hall that they swell

1667. And it's all about you

  1668. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1669. Jesus, I love you

  1670. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1671. I'm so glad it's Christmas

1672. All the tinsel and lights

1673. And the presents are nice

1674. But the real gift is you

  1675. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1676. I'm so glad it's Christmas

  1677. Happy birthday, Jesus

1678. All the carols and bells

1679. In the hall that they swell

1680. And it's all about you

  1681. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1682. Jesus, I love you

  1683. Jesus, I love you

  1684. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1685. I love you

  1686. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1687. I love you

  1688. Happy birthday, Jesus

  1689. Great, that was great

  1690. Can I hear, that's amazing

  1691. I mean, I shouldn't even come up

1692. You can't follow kids, right?

  1693. You guys, amazing

  1694. Very good

  1695. What a blessing

1696. Hey, I'm going to keep this

  1697. After that

1698. I just need to keep it short

  1699. And sweet

1700. Remember, you can't go out

1701. That door where you locked

  1702. We electrified that door

1703. So don't go out that door

1704. We want everybody to exit

  1705. This way

  1706. There's food

1707. We'd love for you to stay

1708. With us and hang out

1709. We do meals as families

1710. And so that's what we do

  1711. In community

  1712. So please head out

  1713. That way afterwards

  1714. I want to just

1715. One thing I want us

1716. To pray for as a community

  1717. We believe that God

  1718. Has put us here

  1719. As a church

1720. To reach out to people

1721. Who aren't in church today

  1722. Right?

1723. And so we sent out

  1724. 20,007 of these flyers

  1725. To the households

  1726. In this area

1727. It talks about the outreach

  1728. In December 21st

  1729. At Cyberport

1730. We're going to be doing it

  1731. For a week as a church

  1732. Over here

  1733. All the community groups

  1734. Are involved

1735. And then we talk about

  1736. December 25th

  1737. The Christmas outreach service

  1738. Here

1739. So we want you guys

  1740. As a church

  1741. To pray about this

1742. To take some of these

  1743. And invite your friends

1744. Personally to come join us

1745. And be a part of this

  1746. And that people

1747. Would be able to sing

  1748. Happy birthday Jesus

1749. Again for the first time

  1750. As a family

  1751. Okay?

  1752. So will you commit

  1753. To do that?

1754. Also one of the sad things

  1755. About

  1756. I just don't know

1757. If I can trust you guys

  1758. Behind me, huh?

1759. One of the sad things

  1760. About our

  1761. Fun

  1762. But sad things

1763. About being in this community

1764. Is that people come and go

1765. And so we are saying goodbye

  1766. To two people

  1767. Who have been amazing

  1768. Servants in the church

1769. And you're going to see

1770. How amazing they have been

  1771. When they stand up

1772. And so the first one

  1773. Is Jeremiah

  1774. So Jeremiah is leaving

1775. You want to stand up?

1776. So Jeremiah is kind of like

  1777. From my hometown

  1778. In Austin, Texas

1779. I knew his pastor there

  1780. He came

  1781. He raised his support

  1782. To be here

  1783. To serve the church

  1784. We had no idea

  1785. What we were doing

  1786. We were still trying

1787. To work out this idea

  1788. Of interns

  1789. Church planners

  1790. And staff

  1791. And so he was

1792. One of our guinea pigs

1793. And so he has been here

  1794. For six months

1795. And so he is heading out

1796. This week to go back

  1797. And continue his education

  1798. And studies

  1799. And so you'll see

  1800. We're missing a drummer now

  1801. So Mark

1802. You're going to come up here

  1803. And start drumming, right?

  1804. And then Yuma

1805. Yuma, will you stand up?

  1806. Okay

  1807. Yuma's story is amazing

  1808. Yuma is from Japan

1809. And Yuma came to know the Lord

1810. Two weeks before he came to Watermark

  1811. He was in Japan

1812. And someone led him to Christ

1813. He came to Hong Kong

1814. He wanted to get plugged into a church

1815. And he has been serving us

  1816. For seven months now

  1817. Just tirelessly

  1818. And just amazing

  1819. And he's been growing

1820. In his walk with the Lord

1821. And God has put upon his heart

1822. A burden to go back

  1823. To Tokyo

1824. And to be with his people

1825. And to share the gospel with them

  1826. Osaka

  1827. That's right

1828. Tokyo got destroyed by Godzilla

  1829. In Osaka

  1830. That's right

  1831. And so

1832. So we are going to really miss

  1833. Both of you guys

1834. And so I want to

1835. I want to pray for you guys

  1836. And just

1837. We will stay in touch

  1838. To hear how God

  1839. Uses both of you

  1840. Back in Texas

  1841. And in Osaka

1842. And I know that he's going to do

  1843. Amazing things

1844. And so let me pray for us

  1845. And you are dismissed

1846. To go eat some amazing

  1847. Great Christmas food

1848. I would have been instructed

  1849. To say Christmas food

1850. Father we just thank you

  1851. For this day

  1852. We thank you for

1853. How you bring our lives together

  1854. How you

1855. We are like these threads

  1856. That you grab

  1857. And you change

  1858. And you interweave us

1859. To make this amazing picture

1860. Of the body of Christ

1861. And as we think about

  1862. What you've done

1863. With these children up here

  1864. As they sing songs

  1865. And they've been taken

  1866. Off the streets

  1867. We just

  1868. We thank you

  1869. For what you've done

  1870. Lord

  1871. We thank you for

1872. You brought people like Melissa

1873. And Charles to lead the choir

  1874. And have the patience

  1875. And for Edmund

  1876. And Lincoln

  1877. And Steph

1878. And all the other volunteers

1879. Who come and love on these kids

  1880. In their place

  1881. Where they're not loved

1882. And for all the parts

  1883. You brought together

  1884. To make today happen

  1885. So that we would

  1886. We'd worship you

  1887. We'd sing your praises

  1888. And your glory

1889. And we'd fall more in love with you

  1890. And so Lord

1891. In the midst of that

  1892. As we have this

  1893. Bittersweet experience

  1894. We pray for

  1895. Jeremiah

  1896. And we pray for

  1897. Our brother Yuma

  1898. As they go back

  1899. To their hometowns

  1900. And they continue

  1901. To walk with you

  1902. Lord

  1903. We pray that you

  1904. Would go before them

  1905. We pray that

  1906. They would find

  1907. Your mercy and grace

  1908. Abundant

  1909. Every moment

  1910. We pray that you

  1911. Would open doors

  1912. Of favor

  1913. As they walk

  1914. And as they share

  1915. The most important thing

  1916. In their life

  1917. Your son

  1918. Lord

  1919. We pray that you

  1920. Would do amazing things

  1921. To them

  1922. That you would

  1923. Surround them

  1924. Immediately

  1925. Into a community

  1926. That loves you

  1927. And goes on that

  1928. Journey with them

1929. And so we thank you

1930. For this very short time

  1931. You've given us

  1932. To be with them

  1933. And we look forward

  1934. To getting together

  1935. In heaven

  1936. For eternity

  1937. And just talking

  1938. About your wonder

  1939. And your mercy

  1940. And how you weave

  1941. Us together

  1942. In the incredible

  1943. Things you do

  1944. In this world

  1945. So Lord

  1946. We wish you

  1947. Happy birthday

  1948. We love you

  1949. We need you

1950. We pray for this food

  1951. And this fellowship

1952. That we're about to partake

1953. That it would honor you

1954. That we would have fun

  1955. That we'd realize

  1956. That we're a family

  1957. And that we walk

  1958. Together

  1959. In this

1960. We pray all these things

  1961. In your son

  1962. Jesus name

  1963. Amen

  1964. God bless you

1965. We'll see you back here

  1966. Next week

  1967. But not before

1968. We see you at the dinner table

  1969. Take care

  1970. Bye
