  1. Today's scripture passage is found in Philippians chapter 3 verses 1 to 16.

    Philippians 3:1–16

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  4. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me, and is safe for you.

  5. Look out for the dogs.

  6. Look out for the evildoers.

  7. Look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

  8. For we are the circumcision, who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus.

  9. And put no confidence in the flesh, though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also.

  10. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.

  11. Circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, the Hebrew of Hebrews,

  12. as to the law, a Pharisee.

  13. As to zeal, a persecutor of the church.

  14. As to righteousness under the law, blameless.

  15. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  16. Indeed, I count everything as loss, because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord.

  17. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish.

  18. In order that I may gain Christ and be found in him,

  19. not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,

  20. but that which comes through faith in Christ,

  21. the righteousness from God that depends on faith.

  22. That I may know him and the power of his resurrection,

  23. and may share his sufferings,

  24. becoming like him in his death,

  25. that by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  26. Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect,

  27. but I press on to make it my own,

  28. because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  29. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own,

  30. but one thing I do,

  31. forgetting what lies behind,

  32. and straining forward to what lies ahead,

  33. I press on towards the goal,

  34. for the price of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  35. Let those of you who are mature think this way,

  36. and if in anything you think otherwise,

  37. God will reveal that also to you.

  38. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  39. This is the reading of God's word.

  40. Good morning.

  41. I'm Eric.

  42. If you don't know me, I'm the youth guy here at Watermark Church.

  43. It's great to see you all this morning.

  44. Everyone still awake and alive after Christmas,

  45. and after the end of the world.

  46. Yes.

  47. So, I usually on Thursdays after work,

  48. go over and do some after-school tutoring

  49. for some inner-city kids.

  50. And a few weeks ago, I was there,

  51. I was tutoring this kid that I tutor every week,

  52. and he was doing math homework,

  53. and he had this word problem.

  54. And it said,

  55. a watermelon costs $6 per kilogram.

  56. The cost of a honeydew melon

  57. is one in three-fifths the times

  58. that of a watermelon.

  59. Daddy buys a honeydew melon

  60. that weighs two and a half kg.

  61. How much does he pay?

  62. So, the kid...

  63. Too much.

  64. Probably, yes.

  65. So, the kid sits there.

  66. He thinks really, really hard about it.

  67. Doesn't write anything down on the paper.

  68. Keeps thinking.

  69. Turns to me, and he says,

  70. very seriously,

  71. maybe it will be free.

  72. And I looked at the kid,

  73. and I was like,

  74. why on earth would this honeydew melon be free?

  75. You just have all the problem right here.

  76. Why would it be free after you've read all this?

  77. And he says,

  78. well, maybe daddy knows the shopkeeper.

  79. And I said,

  80. no, you're not allowed to write that down.

  81. But it made me think.

  82. You know, in Hong Kong,

  83. we are a city that loves our steps.

  84. We love our processes.

  85. We have a destination,

  86. a goal that we want to get to,

  87. and we have step A, B, C, D, E,

  88. however many we need,

  89. to get to that goal.

  90. We build a process

  91. so we can achieve the ends that we desire.

  92. You know, this time of year,

  93. that's especially obvious,

  94. because we have New Year's resolutions coming up.

  95. Everyone wants to lose weight,

  96. quit smoking,

  97. go to church more,

  98. save more money.

  99. And everyone has this process

  100. and this plan

  101. that they have come up with

  102. to figure out,

  103. here's how we're going to solve this.

  104. Here's how we're going to fix this problem

  105. in our lives.

  106. And while I was doing research this week,

  107. I actually found out,

  108. interestingly,

  109. that 88% of all New Year's resolutions fail,

  110. according to a study done in 2007

  111. of over 3,000 people.

  112. Over 88% of New Year's resolutions fail.

  113. As I thought about this kid

  114. and how he approached his math problem

  115. and us and how we approach life,

  116. I had a realization

  117. that this kid,

  118. rather than turning to the systems

  119. that he was supposed to use

  120. to solve the problem,

  121. solved the problem through a relationship.

  122. Instead of writing down,

  123. oh, $6 per kg times 1 and 3 fifths

  124. times that,

  125. times 2 kg,

  126. he just said,

  127. oh, daddy knows the shopkeeper,

  128. it's going to be free.

  129. He simplified the entire process

  130. and got a better result.

  131. And as I thought about us in the church,

  132. I realized that a lot of times

  133. we approach our spiritual life

  134. by trying to improve

  135. and trying to fix ourselves

  136. through systems.

  137. We say,

  138. I'm going to read my Bible more,

  139. I'm going to go to church more,

  140. I'm going to do this,

  141. I'm going to do that.

  142. And we have this list of systems

  143. that we think will fix us,

  144. will make us better.

  145. But if you look at the Bible,

  146. the call is not for us

  147. to pursue systems,

  148. it's to pursue a relationship.

  149. And it says that by pursuing

  150. this relationship,

  151. we'll not only simplify the process,

  152. but we'll also achieve better results.

  153. So as we look at today's passage

  154. in Philippians chapter 3,

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  155. we have this guy named

  156. the Apostle Paul.

  157. Now Paul was the king

  158. of fixing himself

  159. through resolutions,

  160. through systems.

  161. He had it all.

  162. And he lists off

  163. what he has accomplished

  164. in this passage.

  165. He starts off saying,

  166. you know,

  167. if anyone thinks

  168. that they've done enough good stuff

  169. that they can be saved,

  170. I am the guy.

  171. His first item on the list,

  172. he was circumcised

  173. on the eighth day.

  174. This is a Jewish,

  175. part of the Jewish law

  176. that baby boys

  177. were supposed to be circumcised

  178. on the eighth day.

  179. And he was,

  180. which means that he came

  181. from a good family

  182. where his parents

  183. kept the law for him

  184. before he was even old enough

  185. to know what was going on.

  186. Next up,

  187. he's of the people of Israel.

  188. He's part of God's chosen people.

  189. And he's not just

  190. any Israelite.

  191. He's from the tribe

  192. of Benjamin,

  193. which back in the day,

  194. Israel had this big split.

  195. And 10 of the 12 tribes

  196. of Israel left

  197. following the king

  198. after David's line,

  199. the line that God

  200. had established.

  201. And Benjamin was one

  202. of the two tribes

  203. that actually stayed

  204. and followed that king.

  205. And so being part

  206. of this tribe

  207. was something

  208. that he could look at

  209. as an accomplishment

  210. and achievement.

  211. Even though he had

  212. no control over

  213. what family he was born into,

  214. it was still an achievement

  215. that he could point to

  216. and say,

  217. look,

  218. I'm better off

  219. because of this

  220. if we're grading

  221. bi-worldly standards.

  222. He says he's a Hebrew

  223. of Hebrews.

  224. As to the law,

  225. a Pharisee.

  226. He was a religious leader.

  227. He wasn't just

  228. some random guy

  229. on the street.

  230. He had studied

  231. the Old Testament

  232. inside and out.

  233. He knew what it said.

  234. He was a leader

  235. in the religious group.

  236. As to Zeal,

  237. a persecutor

  238. of the church,

  239. he believed

  240. so strongly

  241. in what he believed.

  242. He was so passionate

  243. about defending

  244. God's truth

  245. that he had revealed

  246. to his people

  247. that he was willing

  248. to go out

  249. and violently

  250. persecute

  251. the people

  252. that he thought

  253. were corrupting

  254. that truth.

  255. As to righteousness

  256. under the law,

  257. blameless.

  258. There was nothing

  259. that he had done,

  260. nothing in his life

  261. that anyone could point to

  262. and say,

  263. hey,

  264. you messed up.

  265. He kept all the rules.

  266. He had everything

  267. going on for him.

  268. He had it all.

  269. And then you look

  270. at the next verse,

  271. verse 7.

  272. He says,

  273. whatever gain I had,

  274. I've counted as loss

  275. for the sake of Christ.

  276. He has this list

  277. of accomplishments,

  278. all of the systems,

  279. all of the processes,

  280. and he says,

  281. ultimately,

  282. it's loss

  283. because I found

  284. something else,

  285. Christ,

  286. that's more valuable.

  287. The picture he's

  288. painting for us here

  289. is a business transaction.

  290. He has two columns,

  291. the assets column

  292. and the liabilities column.

  293. And he says,

  294. formerly,

  295. in the assets column,

  296. there were all these things.

  297. There was circumcised

  298. the eighth day

  299. of the people of Israel,

  300. of the tribe of Benjamin,

  301. a Hebrew of Hebrews,

  302. as to the law,

  303. a Pharisee,

  304. as to zeal,

  305. a persecutor of the church,

  306. as to righteousness

  307. under the law,

  308. blameless.

  309. And he took a big sharpie

  310. and crossed out

  311. the words assets

  312. from the top of that list

  313. and wrote liabilities.

  314. He drew a new assets column

  315. and in that column

  316. he wrote one thing,

  317. Christ.

  318. Everything that he had

  319. counted on before,

  320. everything that he had

  321. leaned on for his salvation,

  322. for his hope,

  323. he counts it as loss,

  324. as liabilities,

  325. because ultimately,

  326. Christ is the greater thing

  327. that he has found.

  328. The systems lose their value

  329. when he finds this hope

  330. in a relationship instead.

  331. He then goes on.

  332. He says,

  333. indeed,

  334. for his sake,

  335. I have counted

  336. everything as loss

  337. because of the surpassing worth

  338. of knowing Christ Jesus,

  339. my Lord.

  340. There's another picture

  341. we have here.

  342. Imagine a man on a boat

  343. filled with gold.

  344. This man is sailing

  345. and he knows

  346. that when he reaches the shore,

  347. he will be very rich.

  348. And a storm hits.

  349. He has two options.

  350. Either he can take

  351. all this gold on the boat,

  352. throw it overboard,

  353. and survive with his life,

  354. or he can hold on

  355. to this gold,

  356. hold on to this hope

  357. of wealth,

  358. and drown with his treasure.

  359. And he sees

  360. that having life

  361. is of way more value

  362. than having

  363. even this great treasure,

  364. and so he throws

  365. this treasure overboard

  366. from his boat

  367. because he knows

  368. that life

  369. is more precious than this.

  370. Paul here,

  371. he looks at all

  372. of his accomplishments,

  373. he looks at everything

  374. he's accomplished.

  375. He says,

  376. yeah,

  377. these aren't bad things.

  378. It's not bad

  379. to have been a religious leader.

  380. It's not bad

  381. to be an Israelite.

  382. These are good things.

  383. But ultimately,

  384. if I hold on to them

  385. instead of holding on to Christ,

  386. it's going to lead to death.

  387. And so I'm going to take them

  388. and throw them overboard.

  389. Get rid of them

  390. because the treasure

  391. that I'm reaching towards

  392. is of so much more worth

  393. and so much more value

  394. than even these good things

  395. that I have now.

  396. And when he talks about

  397. how he's,

  398. he's,

  399. you know,

  400. counted these things as loss,

  401. it's not just that he's

  402. sort of passively

  403. letting them go,

  404. but he's actively

  405. pursuing this

  406. because of the worth

  407. that he has found instead.

  408. He says he counts

  409. these things as rubbish.

  410. It's not like he

  411. gets rid of these things

  412. and then keeps looking back

  413. and thinks,

  414. oh,

  415. look at all that I had

  416. to give up

  417. in order to follow Jesus.

  418. No, he says it's rubbish.

  419. It's,

  420. that word can be translated

  421. as crap.

  422. This garbage

  423. that I've given up.

  424. All these good things

  425. in comparison

  426. to what I've found,

  427. they're garbage.

  428. I don't care about them.

  429. I don't think about them.

  430. I don't dwell

  431. over what I've lost

  432. or given up

  433. because I have found

  434. something of so much

  435. greater value.

  436. I am pursuing this instead.

  437. And he repeatedly,

  438. repeatedly mentions

  439. the treasure

  440. that he has found

  441. in this passage.

  442. He says,

  443. I've given up

  444. all these things.

  445. In verse 7,

  446. he says,

  447. whatever gain I had,

  448. I've counted loss.

  449. Why?

  450. For the sake of Christ.

  451. In verse 8,

  452. indeed,

  453. I count everything as loss.

  454. Why?

  455. Because of the surpassing

  456. worth

  457. of knowing

  458. Christ Jesus,

  459. my Lord.

  460. And then he says,

  461. for his sake,

  462. I've suffered the loss

  463. of all things

  464. and count them

  465. as rubbish.

  466. Why?

  467. In order that I may

  468. gain Christ.

  469. This is what it's

  470. constantly coming back

  471. to for Paul.

  472. All of these systems,

  473. everything that he had

  474. achieved on his own,

  475. he says,

  476. it's worthless

  477. because there's a greater

  478. treasure that I have found.

  479. He goes on,

  480. he says he wants

  481. to be found in him,

  482. found in Christ,

  483. not having a righteousness

  484. of his own

  485. that comes through

  486. the law,

  487. but that which comes

  488. through faith

  489. in Jesus Christ.

  490. He goes on

  491. in the next verse

  492. and says that he wants

  493. to know

  494. Christ.

  495. That's what he's

  496. reaching for.

  497. That's what he's

  498. working towards,

  499. to know Christ.

  500. To know the power

  501. of his resurrection,

  502. to share in his

  503. sufferings,

  504. to become like him

  505. in his death,

  506. so that by any means

  507. possible,

  508. he may attain

  509. the resurrection

  510. of the dead.

  511. And then he goes on

  512. even further

  513. and he says

  514. that in verse 14

  515. that he's forgetting

  516. everything

  517. that lies behind,

  518. everything he has

  519. given up.

  520. He's not worrying

  521. about that.

  522. He's not daydreaming

  523. about what he

  524. could have had.

  525. He's forgetting it

  526. and he is straining

  527. forward,

  528. he is fighting,

  529. he is pressing on

  530. for this prize,

  531. for a treasure,

  532. for the upward call

  533. of God

  534. in Christ Jesus.

  535. Paul sees this value

  536. of knowing Christ

  537. and says that

  538. in comparison to this,

  539. all of his systems,

  540. all of his resolutions,

  541. all of his achievements

  542. are worthless.

  543. And so we can talk

  544. about knowing Christ,

  545. but it's sort of

  546. an abstract idea,

  547. right?

  548. Like, what does it

  549. mean to know Christ?

  550. And there's a pastor,

  551. he has a very good quote

  552. about knowing Christ.

  553. His name is J.I. Packer

  554. and he says,

  555. one does not know

  556. a living thing

  557. till one knows

  558. not merely

  559. its past history,

  560. but how it's likely

  561. to react and behave

  562. under specific circumstances.

  563. One does not know

  564. a living thing

  565. till one knows

  566. not merely

  567. its past history,

  568. but how it is likely

  569. to react and behave

  570. under specific circumstances.

  571. So knowing about God

  572. is not necessarily

  573. the same as knowing God.

  574. Knowing God

  575. is not just about

  576. knowing a list

  577. of statistics and facts,

  578. but about knowing

  579. a living being,

  580. about having a relationship

  581. with him

  582. that we can see

  583. and know

  584. through experience

  585. how he will respond

  586. in different situations

  587. in our lives.

  588. My brother last year,

  589. he's a business student,

  590. he had to do a project

  591. on Hong Kong

  592. for school.

  593. He read articles,

  594. he did research,

  595. he called me up

  596. and asked me lots of questions

  597. about Hong Kong,

  598. and he did his project

  599. and this past Friday night

  600. I was talking to him

  601. and during our conversation

  602. he made a comment,

  603. oh yeah,

  604. I'm an expert on Hong Kong.

  605. He's never been to Hong Kong,

  606. never even been to Asia,

  607. and I just laughed at him.

  608. I said,

  609. you don't know

  610. the first thing

  611. about Hong Kong.

  612. Yeah, you can name off

  613. all these statistics,

  614. that's great,

  615. but if we dropped you

  616. in Wan Chai

  617. and said,

  618. hey,

  619. be in Central

  620. for a lunch meeting

  621. in an hour,

  622. he would have no idea

  623. what to do,

  624. how to get there,

  625. where to go.

  626. You know,

  627. there's a certain vocabulary

  628. in Hong Kong

  629. that's very different

  630. than back in the States.

  631. If someone starts talking

  632. to him about their flat,

  633. he'd be like,

  634. huh,

  635. what are you talking about?

  636. If someone tells him

  637. to travel somewhere

  638. and take the subway,

  639. he'd be looking for the MTR,

  640. not a tunnel under the ground.

  641. If someone mentions a duvet,

  642. he'd be like,

  643. what on earth is that?

  644. Because he doesn't know Hong Kong,

  645. he hasn't been here,

  646. he hasn't experienced it,

  647. he knows a lot about Hong Kong,

  648. he's read the statistics,

  649. read the facts,

  650. knows the articles,

  651. but he's never been here.

  652. He doesn't know

  653. what this city is about.

  654. He doesn't know

  655. how people will respond here

  656. when he says certain things.

  657. Like,

  658. if he had to go use the bathroom

  659. and he walks up

  660. to a local waiter

  661. and he says,

  662. where's the restroom?

  663. He'll probably get a funny face

  664. and he wouldn't know that

  665. because you have to ask,

  666. where's the toilet instead?

  667. And then they'll respond.

  668. And these are things

  669. that you learn about the city

  670. through time and experience

  671. in the city.

  672. And in a similar way,

  673. you don't get to know God

  674. just by knowing facts about him,

  675. but by spending time

  676. and gaining experience with him.

  677. In university,

  678. I had a roommate

  679. who got to know me pretty well.

  680. We were roommates first semester

  681. and then suite mates second semester,

  682. so we had a lot of time

  683. around each other.

  684. For those of you

  685. who don't know me,

  686. I'm a pretty laid back guy

  687. and that really bothered my roommate.

  688. He wanted to see me angry.

  689. And so he began testing

  690. various ways of making me angry.

  691. He would make fun of me,

  692. he would tease me,

  693. that didn't bother me.

  694. He would do various things,

  695. whatever, no big deal.

  696. But finally, one day,

  697. he found the one thing

  698. that he could do

  699. that would make me

  700. consistently respond

  701. with anger to him.

  702. Biting me.

  703. We'd be standing next to each other

  704. and he'd just turn and be like...

  705. And I mean,

  706. he would bite hard,

  707. he would leave teeth marks.

  708. And I would get angry

  709. every single time.

  710. Understandably, right?

  711. Yes?

  712. But he knew

  713. through the time

  714. that we had spent together

  715. and through the experiences

  716. that we had shared together

  717. that if he wanted to see me angry,

  718. which apparently he did

  719. from time to time,

  720. biting me

  721. was the way to do that.

  722. And so he got to know me,

  723. he tested

  724. what will work,

  725. what will not work

  726. to make Eric angry.

  727. And biting me

  728. was what he found out worked.

  729. So one day,

  730. he had bit me

  731. and I was just like,

  732. why are you biting me?

  733. He was like,

  734. because you never get angry

  735. unless I bite you.

  736. I didn't get it.

  737. But apparently for him,

  738. that was how he had learned

  739. to anticipate my response.

  740. By testing out various means,

  741. see how I responded,

  742. and then finding the way

  743. that I would respond

  744. in anger,

  745. righteous anger.

  746. And just as with these relationships

  747. with God,

  748. it's not just about

  749. learning statistics,

  750. it's not just about

  751. learning facts,

  752. but it's about

  753. pursuing a relationship,

  754. spending time together,

  755. time to get to know him,

  756. about building experiences,

  757. about consistently seeing,

  758. hey, when I need God,

  759. how is he responding to me?

  760. How is he working in my life?

  761. How is he there for me?

  762. How is he shaping me

  763. to be more like him?

  764. And so how do we get to know God?

  765. I'm a little bit hesitant right here

  766. because I'm up here talking about

  767. how it's about a relationship

  768. and not steps,

  769. and I'm about to give you steps.

  770. So I'm going to give you a disclaimer

  771. before I give you the steps.

  772. That each of these steps

  773. is not an end in and of itself.

  774. Each of these steps

  775. is intended to be a means

  776. to the end of having

  777. a deeper, fuller relationship

  778. with Christ

  779. where we know him more.

  780. What I mean by that is that

  781. if you start reading your Bible

  782. for 15 minutes every day,

  783. that does not automatically

  784. in and of itself

  785. make you a better Christian

  786. if it doesn't help you

  787. to know Jesus.

  788. If you start coming to church

  789. more often,

  790. but it's more about having an item

  791. to check off your list

  792. instead of pursuing a relationship

  793. with God

  794. and with other Christians

  795. within the church

  796. is the wrong motives.

  797. And yes,

  798. sometimes spiritual disciplines

  799. and resolutions

  800. are good and even necessary,

  801. but they can also be pursued

  802. for the wrong reasons.

  803. So as I give you this list,

  804. it is not a list

  805. so that we can check things off

  806. and say,

  807. all right,

  808. I read my Bible today,

  809. I prayed today,

  810. I'm at church,

  811. yes,

  812. but it's a list of ways

  813. to help pursue

  814. a relationship with God

  815. to help get to know him better.

  816. So the first item

  817. is reading our Bibles.

  818. It's how God has spoken to us.

  819. In Hebrews chapter 1,

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  820. it says that long ago

  821. in many times,

  822. many,

  823. you know,

  824. God spoke to our fathers

  825. through the prophets.

  826. That God has spoken,

  827. that the words that he has spoken

  828. are recorded for us here

  829. so that we can see them

  830. and we can read them.

  831. 2 Timothy 3.16

  832. talks about how

  833. all scripture,

  834. the Bible,

  835. is God-breathed

  836. and is given to us

  837. to help us grow.

  838. That in the Bible,

  839. we have the words of God

  840. given to us

  841. so that we can know him.

  842. So that we can pursue

  843. this treasure

  844. that Paul was pursuing,

  845. that Paul said

  846. was so valuable

  847. that he wanted it

  848. even if it cost him his life.

  849. 3 Timothy 3.16

  850. The second thing

  851. that we can do

  852. is pray.

  853. You know,

  854. prayer,

  855. in prayer,

  856. we can express

  857. desires to God,

  858. we can give thanks to God,

  859. we can confess our sins to God,

  860. we can talk to God

  861. about how great he is.

  862. I think one of the most

  863. helpful definitions

  864. of prayer

  865. that I've ever heard

  866. is a pastor who said,

  867. prayer

  868. is living

  869. with a constant awareness

  870. of God's presence

  871. in our everyday lives.

  872. that sometimes

  873. prayer isn't just

  874. getting down on our knees

  875. and being like,

  876. dear God,

  877. please help me with this.

  878. But it's

  879. as we go to work,

  880. as we're riding in the MTR,

  881. being aware of the fact

  882. that God is with us,

  883. that what we do

  884. is a reflection

  885. of who he is,

  886. that when we need him,

  887. he is there for us,

  888. and that will help us

  889. to develop an awareness

  890. of his presence with us

  891. and activity in our lives

  892. on a day-to-day,

  893. moment-by-moment basis.

  894. Next up,

  895. time in gospel community.

  896. Other Christians

  897. are one of the greatest tools

  898. that God has given us

  899. to help us become

  900. more like him.

  901. In gospel community,

  902. we are able to see

  903. aspects of God's love for us

  904. reflected to us

  905. in other Christians.

  906. When we fail and mess up,

  907. we get forgiveness

  908. that we don't deserve.

  909. We get unconditional love.

  910. We have friends

  911. who are willing

  912. to call us out

  913. and tell us

  914. when there's something

  915. wrong with us

  916. instead of ignoring

  917. the problem

  918. and pretending

  919. like it doesn't exist.

  920. And there are times

  921. where community

  922. can go very,

  923. very, very wrong.

  924. But when it is done properly,

  925. it is one of the greatest tools

  926. that God uses

  927. to make us more like him

  928. and to help us know him.

  929. Here at Watermark,

  930. we like to encourage people

  931. to get involved

  932. in community groups.

  933. If you're not in one,

  934. we would encourage you

  935. to sign up for one

  936. after service.

  937. There will be a sign-up table

  938. right out back.

  939. But this time

  940. in gospel community,

  941. time around other Christians,

  942. where we can speak

  943. the gospel to each other,

  944. where we can model

  945. the transformation

  946. that the gospel

  947. brings to our lives,

  948. is huge

  949. and hugely important

  950. in helping us

  951. get to know Christ.

  952. And the fourth item

  953. on the list

  954. is another one

  955. that's sort of vague

  956. and ambiguous

  957. because its specific

  958. application for each person

  959. could be very different.

  960. But it's living

  961. in obedience

  962. to God's word.

  963. This isn't something,

  964. again,

  965. this isn't something

  966. that in and of itself

  967. makes us better Christians.

  968. But it's something,

  969. it's not something

  970. that helps God

  971. love us more.

  972. That's a gift

  973. given to us

  974. through what Jesus

  975. has done.

  976. But,

  977. when we obey God,

  978. when we obey His word,

  979. we are constantly

  980. put into situations

  981. where we need Him.

  982. Maybe,

  983. being obedient

  984. to God's word

  985. will cost us

  986. a relationship

  987. because the people

  988. that we're hanging out with

  989. don't want to hang out

  990. with someone

  991. who's going to

  992. actually obey God.

  993. And in those moments,

  994. we see that God

  995. is with us

  996. and will not forsake us

  997. even when everyone else does.

  998. Maybe,

  999. being obedient

  1000. to God's word

  1001. means that we become

  1002. more generous,

  1003. that we give away

1004. more of what we have.

1005. And we have to learn

  1006. to trust God

  1007. to provide for us

1008. in our times of need.

  1009. Maybe it means

  1010. that rather than

  1011. finding our hope

  1012. in a relationship

  1013. or in a job

  1014. or in grades,

  1015. we find our hope

  1016. in Him

1017. and we have to learn

  1018. that He actually

  1019. will sustain us,

1020. that He is big enough

1021. to place our hope in.

  1022. You know,

  1023. each of these things,

1024. as we go towards them,

1025. I guess you could say

  1026. it's like sharing

  1027. in His sufferings

  1028. like Paul talks about

  1029. in this passage.

  1030. It's a way of

  1031. coming alongside

  1032. and seeing

  1033. what Jesus' life

  1034. was like

  1035. for us

  1036. when He lived.

  1037. It helps us

  1038. to understand

  1039. what He went through

  1040. and to develop

  1041. this trust

  1042. in God,

  1043. this relationship

  1044. with God

  1045. within our lives.

  1046. and there are

  1047. other ways,

  1048. many other ways

  1049. that we can grow

  1050. in our relationship

  1051. with God,

  1052. but ultimately,

  1053. like I said,

  1054. with any relationship,

  1055. it comes down

  1056. to time together

  1057. and experience

  1058. of one another.

  1059. Time together

  1060. with God

  1061. either individually

  1062. or in gospel community

  1063. where we can get

  1064. to know Him,

  1065. get to know

  1066. what His heart is,

  1067. how He thinks,

1068. and be shaped by that

  1069. and experience

  1070. of seeing Him

  1071. be faithful

  1072. again and again,

  1073. of seeing Him

  1074. work powerfully

  1075. in situations

  1076. where we never understood

1077. how He could have worked.

  1078. And this shift

  1079. from pursuing God

  1080. through systems

  1081. and resolutions

  1082. to pursuing God

  1083. through a relationship,

  1084. it doesn't slow down

  1085. our progress

1086. in becoming more like Him.

  1087. It speeds it up,

  1088. actually,

  1089. just like the kid

  1090. at the start

  1091. who had Daddy

  1092. got the honeydew melon

  1093. for free

  1094. because of a relationship.

  1095. When we pursue Christ

  1096. through this relationship,

1097. it speeds up our process.

  1098. It improves the results.

1099. Because as long as we

  1100. are focused

1101. on what we can do,

1102. on what we have to change

  1103. about ourselves,

1104. about what's wrong with me,

  1105. it's like we're slaves.

1106. We have this oppressive master

  1107. standing over us saying,

  1108. do, do, do,

  1109. more, more, more,

  1110. work harder,

  1111. do better.

1112. But when we look to Christ

  1113. and find our hope

1114. in a relationship with Him,

  1115. we hear His message

  1116. that it is finished,

  1117. that it is done,

  1118. that everything

1119. that we need to achieve

1120. for God to love us

  1121. has been achieved

  1122. by Him.

  1123. and that rather

  1124. than pursuing

  1125. this betterment

  1126. through being slaves,

  1127. we can pursue it

  1128. in freedom

  1129. because the victory

  1130. has already been won.

  1131. There's a pastor

  1132. named Tulian Chavidyan.

  1133. He's Billy Graham's grandson.

1134. He has this excellent quote

  1135. and he says,

1136. I've come to the realization

  1137. that when I stop

  1138. obsessing

  1139. over my need

  1140. to improve,

  1141. that is improvement.

  1142. When I stop

  1143. obsessing narcissistically

  1144. over my need

  1145. to get better,

1146. that is what the Bible

  1147. means

  1148. by getting better.

1149. Progress in the Christian life

  1150. is not

  1151. I'm getting better

  1152. and better

  1153. and better.

1154. Progress in the Christian life

  1155. is growing

  1156. in my realization

  1157. of just how bad

  1158. I am

  1159. and growing

  1160. in my appreciation

  1161. of just how much

  1162. Jesus has done

  1163. for me.

  1164. Progress is not

  1165. okay,

  1166. I've set my list,

  1167. I've kept everything

  1168. on the list,

  1169. I'm better now

1170. than I was at this time

  1171. last year.

  1172. Progress is realizing

  1173. that we are broken,

  1174. that we are sinners,

  1175. that we are desperately

1176. in need of a Savior

  1177. and that Jesus

  1178. is the exact Savior

  1179. Savior that we need

  1180. for our problem,

1181. that we are way worse

  1182. than we ever

  1183. could have imagined,

  1184. that He loves us

  1185. way more

  1186. than we ever

  1187. could have hoped for.

1188. That is what is meant

  1189. by progress

  1190. in our Christian faith,

  1191. getting to know Him

  1192. more.

  1193. And so as we

1194. get ready to leave today,

1195. I want to leave you

  1196. with a couple questions

  1197. to consider,

  1198. think about.

  1199. the first one is,

  1200. what is

  1201. the one

  1202. passion

  1203. in your life

  1204. that makes

  1205. everything else

  1206. look like rubbish

  1207. in comparison?

  1208. What is the one

  1209. thing that you say,

1210. if I can have this,

  1211. everything else

  1212. doesn't matter?

  1213. Is it

  1214. knowing Christ?

  1215. is it

  1216. having lots

  1217. and lots

  1218. of money?

  1219. Is it

  1220. finding that

  1221. special someone

  1222. and getting

  1223. that relationship

  1224. of your dreams?

  1225. Is it

  1226. good grades?

  1227. And if it's

  1228. not Christ,

  1229. what would it

  1230. take for Christ

  1231. to become

  1232. that great

  1233. passion

  1234. in your life?

  1235. What changes

  1236. would need

  1237. to be made

  1238. in the way

  1239. that you think,

  1240. in the way

  1241. that you spend

  1242. your time,

  1243. in the way

  1244. that you use

  1245. your money?

  1246. And are we

  1247. willing to make

  1248. those changes?

  1249. I know for me,

  1250. a lot of times

  1251. when I truly

  1252. honestly look

  1253. at my life

  1254. and I look

  1255. at what I'm

  1256. pursuing,

  1257. it's not

  1258. Christ

  1259. as the

  1260. primary,

  1261. the main

  1262. thing.

  1263. That I look

  1264. back and I

  1265. see,

  1266. you know,

  1267. I'm dreaming

  1268. about,

  1269. oh,

  1270. imagine if I

  1271. had this

  1272. other job

  1273. and the

  1274. things that I

  1275. could buy

  1276. if I had

  1277. all this

  1278. money

  1279. from working

  1280. at a bank.

  1281. And it's

  1282. not,

  1283. oh,

  1284. Christ is my

  1285. treasure,

  1286. Christ is my

  1287. joy,

  1288. I'm content

  1289. in him.

  1290. But it's

  1291. looking back,

  1292. it's not

  1293. counting everything

  1294. else as rubbish,

  1295. it's just sort

  1296. of trying to

  1297. find a balance.

  1298. But that's

  1299. not what

  1300. Christ calls

  1301. us to do.

  1302. there's a

  1303. booklet on

  1304. your seat

  1305. today.

  1306. We encourage

  1307. each of you

  1308. to take

  1309. those home,

  1310. to read

  1311. through them,

  1312. to fill

  1313. them out.

  1314. Basically,

  1315. these

  1316. booklets are

  1317. to help

  1318. you think

  1319. through what

  1320. is my

  1321. mission,

  1322. what is

  1323. my vision,

  1324. what is

  1325. my purpose

  1326. as I

  1327. enter this

  1328. new year.

  1329. We hope

  1330. that,

  1331. again,

  1332. this isn't

  1333. something that

  1334. if you fill

  1335. it out,

  1336. it'll make

  1337. you a better

  1338. Christian.

  1339. But we're

  1340. hoping that

  1341. it's a

  1342. tool that

  1343. will help

  1344. you get

  1345. to know

  1346. Christ

  1347. more in

  1348. this upcoming

  1349. year.

  1350. and we'll

  1351. know that

  1352. we've reached

  1353. this point

  1354. where we can

  1355. say Christ

  1356. is truly

  1357. our treasure,

  1358. when we

  1359. can say

  1360. simply,

  1361. honestly,

  1362. not because

  1363. we feel

  1364. that as

  1365. Christians

  1366. we ought

  1367. to,

  1368. but because

  1369. it is a

  1370. plain matter

  1371. of fact

  1372. that we

  1373. have known

  1374. God.

  1375. And that

  1376. because we

  1377. have known

  1378. Him,

  1379. the

  1380. unpleasantness

  1381. we have

  1382. had or

  1383. the

  1384. pleasantness

  1385. we have

  1386. not

  1387. had,

  1388. because we

  1389. are

  1390. Christians,

  1391. does not

  1392. matter to

  1393. us because

  1394. of how

  1395. great God

  1396. is in

  1397. comparison.

  1398. When we

  1399. can say

  1400. that we

  1401. have known

  1402. God,

  1403. not because

  1404. we feel

  1405. like we

  1406. should as

  1407. Christians,

  1408. not because

  1409. we think

  1410. that's the

  1411. right church

  1412. answer,

  1413. but because

  1414. it's true,

  1415. it's a

  1416. fact,

  1417. that we

  1418. have known

  1419. God,

  1420. and that

  1421. because we

  1422. have known

  1423. Him,

  1424. any

  1425. unpleasantness we

  1426. have suffered

  1427. through being

  1428. Christians,

  1429. or any

  1430. pleasantness we

  1431. have not

  1432. gotten to

  1433. enjoy because

  1434. of following

  1435. Him,

  1436. is rubbish,

  1437. it's worthless,

  1438. meaningless,

  1439. in comparison

  1440. to the

  1441. treasure that

  1442. we have found

  1443. in Him.

  1444. Let's pray.

  1445. Father, we

  1446. thank You for

  1447. this treasure,

  1448. we thank You

  1449. for the fact

  1450. that You have

  1451. given us

  1452. Christ,

  1453. that You have

  1454. given us

  1455. life,

  1456. that You have

  1457. given us

  1458. hope,

  1459. that You have

  1460. allowed us

  1461. to know You.

  1462. We pray

  1463. that as we

  1464. enter this

  1465. new year,

  1466. that we

  1467. would make

  1468. it our

  1469. goal to

  1470. know You,

  1471. that You

  1472. would be our

  1473. treasure,

  1474. and that

  1475. everything else

  1476. would be

  1477. rubbish in

  1478. comparison to

  1479. us.

  1480. God, give

  1481. us a greater

  1482. love for You.

  1483. Help us to

  1484. pursue knowing

  1485. You with

  1486. every ounce of

  1487. effort that we

  1488. can, with

  1489. every piece

  1490. of our being.

  1491. Let us know

  1492. You more.

  1493. Let us love

  1494. You more.

  1495. In Jesus'

  1496. name,

  1497. Amen.

  1498. Amen.

  1499. Let's stand

  1500. and enjoy

  1501. our relationship

  1502. with God

  1503. in the practice

  1504. that we heard

  1505. this morning.

  1506. That I may

  1507. know Christ

  1508. more.

  1509. Can you

  1510. repeat that

  1511. with me?

  1512. That I may

  1513. know Christ

  1514. more.

  1515. That I may

  1516. know Christ

  1517. more.

  1518. I don't know

  1519. where you are

  1520. on your journey

  1521. today where

  1522. God has you.

  1523. But I think

  1524. that's a question

  1525. that each of

  1526. us needs to

  1527. ask this

  1528. new year.

  1529. What does it

  1530. look like for

  1531. that to happen?

  1532. What are some

  1533. things maybe that

  1534. I need to think

  1535. about in my

  1536. world for that

  1537. to happen?

  1538. We believe God

  1539. has placed this

  1540. church here to

  1541. help people take

  1542. that next step

  1543. wherever they're

  1544. at in their

  1545. spiritual journey.

  1546. That you would

  1547. know Christ

  1548. more.

  1549. And fall in love

  1550. with him

  1551. more.

  1552. It's about a

  1553. relationship.

  1554. It's not about

  1555. religion.

  1556. It's about a

  1557. relationship.

  1558. You know one

  1559. of the things

  1560. we've been

  1561. praying about a

  1562. lot is someone

  1563. asked me hey

  1564. are we going to

  1565. have a New

  1566. Year's Eve

  1567. service and

  1568. we're like oh

  1569. wow that would be

  1570. like four services

  1571. in eight days

  1572. right?

  1573. This craziness.

  1574. But you know

  1575. we our hope

  1576. is maybe I

  1577. should put it

  1578. this way.

  1579. If you walk

  1580. into our

  1581. community center

  1582. there's a sign

  1583. in Chinese on

  1584. the wall and

  1585. it says the

  1586. first person

  1587. plants the

  1588. seed and the

  1589. next person

  1590. benefits from

  1591. the shade.

  1592. And we believe

  1593. that no matter

  1594. how long God

  1595. has you here

  1596. whether it's

  1597. ten days I met

  1598. somebody here for

  1599. ten days on

  1600. school break or

  1601. it's two years

  1602. it will turn

  1603. into twenty

  1604. years like some

  1605. people that God

  1606. wants you to

  1607. plant a seed

  1608. which is Jesus

  1609. Christ in

  1610. people's lives

  1611. around you.

  1612. We're not going

  1613. to have a

  1614. New Year's

  1615. Eve celebration

  1616. here because

  1617. we want you

  1618. to be out

  1619. in New Year's

  1620. Eve celebrations

  1621. with your

  1622. friends planting

  1623. the seed of

  1624. Christ in

  1625. their life and

  1626. trusting the

  1627. Lord to grow

  1628. it up.

  1629. They would come

  1630. to know him.

  1631. Does that make

  1632. sense?

  1633. So we want you

  1634. to be out there

  1635. Christine and I

  1636. are going to be

  1637. out with some

  1638. of our closest

  1639. neighbors we've

  1640. been trying to

  1641. spend time with

  1642. for two years

  1643. now.

  1644. Some of the

  1645. rugby crew.

  1646. And our prayer is

  1647. that every one of

  1648. you would be out

  1649. there with some

  1650. of your friends

  1651. sharing with

  1652. them getting to

  1653. know them placing

  1654. that seed of

  1655. Jesus that

  1656. relationship in

  1657. their world.

  1658. So we are so

  1659. excited that you

  1660. are here with us

  1661. on this journey

  1662. for this next

  1663. year.

  1664. Again as Eric

  1665. shared take this

  1666. home think about

  1667. it think about it

  1668. in the context of

  1669. that I may know

  1670. Christ more.

  1671. How can I do

  1672. that this year?

  1673. Let me pray for

  1674. us.

  1675. Father we just

  1676. thank you for

  1677. this day.

  1678. We thank you

  1679. that we come

  1680. before you as

  1681. your people and

  1682. we know that

  1683. you're always

  1684. with us.

  1685. And still yet we

  1686. struggle sometimes

  1687. as we think about

  1688. that and wondering

  1689. if there are

  1690. things in our

  1691. world that we

  1692. cling to instead

  1693. of you.

  1694. So I pray for

  1695. my heart.

  1696. I pray for all

  1697. of our hearts

  1698. here.

  1699. That you would

  1700. make it clear

  1701. what that is

  1702. in our world

  1703. today.

  1704. That you would

  1705. give us the

  1706. strength to

  1707. confess that

  1708. to you.

  1709. Because identifying

  1710. it and confessing

  1711. it is the big

  1712. step.

  1713. Lord we pray

  1714. that we would

  1715. fall more in

  1716. love with your

  1717. son as we

  1718. live these things

  1719. behind that

  1720. Paul said was

  1721. scubala.

  1722. Rubbish.

  1723. Lord may we

  1724. be a people

  1725. that knows

  1726. you more.

  1727. That falls in

  1728. love with you

  1729. more.

  1730. And as those

  1731. 95% of Hong

  1732. Kong around us

  1733. who walk in

  1734. darkness they

  1735. have no

  1736. relationship with

  1737. you.

  1738. Lord we pray

  1739. that the 95%

  1740. would see you

  1741. in us.

  1742. They would

  1743. ask questions.

  1744. The seed

  1745. would be planted

  1746. and you

  1747. would grow it

  1748. up and

  1749. eternity would

  1750. be different.

  1751. So Lord we

  1752. come to you

  1753. this beginning

  1754. of this next

  1755. year and we

  1756. lay it all

  1757. at your feet.

  1758. Help us to

  1759. know you

  1760. more in a

  1761. relationship

  1762. through your

  1763. son Jesus.

  1764. We love you.

  1765. We pray all

  1766. these things

  1767. in your son

  1768. Jesus'

  1769. holy name.

  1770. Amen.

  1771. We'll see you

  1772. back here next

  1773. week.

  1774. Please don't

  1775. run away.

  1776. There's food

  1777. and drinks

  1778. out there.

  1779. We'd love

  1780. to meet

  1781. you.

  1782. We'd love

  1783. to meet

  1784. you.

  1785. We'd love

  1786. to meet

  1787. you.
