  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of James, chapter 2.

    James 2 chapter mention

  2. Please read along in your bulletin.

  3. What use is it, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but he has no works, can that faith save him?

  4. If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of you says to them,

  5. Go in peace, be warmed, and be filled, and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that?

  6. Even so, faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.

  7. But someone may as well say, You have faith and I have works.

  8. Show me your faith without the works and I will show you my faith with my works.

  9. You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe and shudder.

  10. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?

  11. Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac, his son, on the altar?

  12. You see that faith was working with his works.

  13. And as a result of the works, faith was perfected.

  14. And the scripture was fulfilled, which says,

  15. And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness.

  16. And he was called the friend of God.

  17. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

  18. In the same way, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way?

  19. For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.

  20. This is God's word.

  21. Amen.

  22. Amen.

  23. Wow.

  24. That's amazing.

  25. Great worship.

  26. Thanks, guys.

  27. You could tell there was a theme there in the songs, right?

  28. The songs came up with the same theme.

  29. Welcome to Watermark Community Church.

  30. My name is Tobin Miller.

  31. I'm one of the pastors here, teaching pastor.

  32. So if this is your first time here, we are glad that you're here with us and joining us as we worship the Lord.

  33. One of the things you'll see in our church is we're kind of chaotic with kids everywhere.

  34. And part of that is because that's kind of our stage of life, too, with four kids.

  35. And our world is out of control sometimes.

  36. One of the things that I would say we're very teachable on as a couple.

  37. One of the things that God continues to teach us on is how to raise our children.

  38. And so if you have methods of how you've raised perfect kids, we would love to hear that.

  39. Because we have the big L written up, not loser, but learners.

  40. Might be losers, too, but I don't know.

  41. So we have the big learner there.

  42. And it's interesting because with four kids, each of our kids is so different.

  43. And as a dad, I just want to get in there and fix it.

  44. I just want to get the right thing for the right kid and the right time.

  45. And those things don't always work that way.

  46. And what I'm continuing to learn is we have truth and we have love and we have grace.

  47. And as we speak with people and we speak with our children, those three need to be intertwined or it doesn't necessarily work very well.

  48. One of our kids, when they do something wrong, I just need to look at them.

  49. And they just fall apart.

  50. And they need a lot of grace and they need a lot of love.

  51. And they respond to truth.

  52. And the truth is they just know their heart is so sensitive.

  53. One of our kids, when they do something wrong, they want to debate why they did it wrong.

  54. And to prove to us that it's not their fault, but that someone else caused them to do that.

  55. And so for them, I have to share a little bit more of truth and talk to them about this is what's going on and what's happening here.

  56. And then bring in the grace and love.

  57. One of our kids has this rock for a head.

  58. And no matter what happens to, I won't say their name, but they just cannot get what's going on in their world.

  59. And so with that, I feel like I need a lot of truth, a hammer of truth to try to break the rock.

  60. And at the end, as we sit there and watch our kids grow and watch people grow and go on journeys,

  61. we realize that unless God is working in people's hearts,

  62. unless God is there and he's making us sensitive to his spirit,

  63. that often, no matter how well you do, grace and truth and love,

  64. not much works out.

  65. James learned that in his church.

  66. We're going through the book of James.

  67. James was the half-brother of Jesus.

  68. He's the first pastor in the church of Jerusalem.

  69. The book of James that we're reading is probably the earliest book in the New Testament.

  70. It was probably written about 55 A.D.

  71. So most of the people in the church had seen Jesus.

  72. They had seen his life.

  73. They had seen him walk.

  74. They had heard his words.

  75. And 15 years into this church, the church is having a lot of problems.

  76. Remember, James is this pastor.

  77. And one of the things you learn as you read about history of James

  78. is that everyone in the congregation knew that he cared for them and that he loved them.

  79. His nickname was Camel Knees.

  80. And he got that nickname, Camel Knees, because he spent so much time praying for his people

  81. that he developed these massive calluses on his knees that everyone could see.

  82. And so whenever there was truth coming in and people came in and said,

  83. well, I don't know, where's the love?

  84. All they would have to look at sometimes is his knees.

  85. And they'd realize that he loves them in amazing ways.

  86. And he's proved that as he walks with them.

  87. And so the church has gone through these struggles.

  88. And the struggle is they've looked at different mirrors in their world

  89. and they're trying to find out how they're doing.

  90. Are they doing well?

  91. Are they doing good?

  92. And so they put up these different mirrors like we talked about last week.

  93. And they looked at how are we doing in these things.

  94. And they've used the mirror of the world.

  95. And they've used the mirror of culture.

  96. And they've used the mirror of religion.

  97. And they used the mirror of peers.

  98. And they used the mirror of themselves.

  99. And all the time they're looking into these things around them.

  100. And they're trying to evaluate, am I doing well?

  101. Am I doing good?

  102. And James says that the only mirror that we can look into is the mirror of God's word.

  103. Because it's the only thing that's constant.

  104. It's the only thing that's of authority.

  105. It never changes.

  106. It's spoken from the word of God coming out of his mouth into people.

  107. And through his word we evaluate everything.

  108. It's the only mirror that we can look at in our world

  109. and try to figure out what's going on there.

  110. And so as we look into the mirror of God's word,

  111. it changes how we think about his word and about people and about God.

  112. God's word is the only thing that can convict us and speak to us

  113. and encourage us and tear us apart and restore us.

  114. Today I want to look at this passage.

  115. This passage has caused me a lot of problems as an early Christian.

  116. A lot of problems.

  117. When I had come to faith at an early age,

  118. I developed this huge burden for my family.

  119. And I prayed for my family for a long time.

  120. My extended family lived in Montana.

  121. And so we knew that that summer we were going to go up there.

  122. And so I started to go on this journey with God

  123. and ask about how God has changed me

  124. and the things that he's been teaching me.

  125. And I started to pray for my family.

  126. Because I knew I would have a chance to see my grandparents.

  127. We only saw them once every three years.

  128. And in this opportunity, I was praying that I could share

  129. what God had done in my life to them.

  130. And so I prayed and I studied and I read the four laws

  131. and I looked at the navigator bridge and I looked at the wheel

  132. and I learned all these different ways to share my faith.

  133. And I had people praying.

  134. Did I mention that?

  135. Praying and praying and praying.

  136. And we got up there and we drove to Montana

  137. to come visit them.

  138. And one quiet afternoon, I got my grandparents by themselves,

  139. the 12-year-old.

  140. And I shared with them about what God had done in my life.

  141. How he came into my heart.

  142. How he showed me mercy.

  143. How he showed me grace.

  144. How he showed me love.

  145. I shared with them my sin and the things that were wrong in my life.

  146. Even as a 12-year-old, I realized that I was separated from God

  147. and there was no way that I could get back to him.

  148. I shared with them how God had opened my eyes and my heart to his son Jesus.

  149. I shared with them the gospel of faith,

  150. just as Paul shares in Romans, that it's by faith alone.

  151. And I stopped.

  152. And I waited for their response.

  153. It was silent.

  154. There wasn't a drill drill like now.

  155. And all of a sudden, they looked at me and they said,

  156. Tobin, are you trying to tell us that we are saved just by faith

  157. and not by our works?

  158. Are you trying to say that once we're saved, that that's it,

  159. that God's grace powers over us,

  160. and that nothing that we can do, we can lie, we can cheat,

  161. we can do anything, and God has to forgive us?

  162. Yes.

  163. Then they said, are you telling us that even Hitler

  164. could be in heaven right now if he asked for forgiveness for what he did?

  165. And I don't know, my parents, my grandparents were kind of strange

  166. because immediately after that, they said,

  167. even Elvis?

  168. To this day, I do not understand that.

  169. But for some reason, they equated Elvis and Hitler together.

  170. And they said, do you mean even Elvis could be in heaven

  171. if he prayed and asked God for forgiveness

  172. and to make away all the things that he did?

  173. And I kind of sat there and they go, you know,

  174. we know so many people in the church

  175. who have said that they follow Christ,

  176. but they live lives that are totally, totally out of control.

  177. And then they opened up the Bible

  178. and they went to this passage in Luke,

  179. I mean, James chapter 2,

    James 2 chapter mention

  180. and they read verse 17 to me

  181. and they said, even so, faith, if it has no works,

  182. is dead, being by itself.

  183. And they continued to go through the book of James with me

  184. about works, works, works.

  185. You see, they were going to a church at that time

  186. which is similar to the church in Wan Chai

  187. with the big cathedral

  188. and the guys wear the white shirts

  189. and they wear the ties

  190. and they wear that little name tag that says elder, so and so.

  191. Because they had left their church

  192. because they felt like everybody was a hypocrite

  193. and inconsistent.

  194. And then they looked at me and said,

  195. Tobin, you're 12 years old,

  196. but you're so naive

  197. because everybody knows

  198. that you need to work

  199. to earn your salvation.

  200. It says so in James.

  201. I was silent.

  202. I mean, I just kind of sat there like,

  203. fail on what I just tried to do, right?

  204. And I sat there and I started praying

  205. and I walked away from that time

  206. and I went home

  207. and I started reading the Bible

  208. because I had this fear.

  209. The fear was that maybe my faith

  210. wasn't real.

  211. Maybe my faith was insincere.

  212. Maybe I had learned the wrong thing.

  213. Maybe I was doing the wrong thing.

  214. And so I studied and I studied

  215. and I studied

  216. because I wanted my faith to be alive,

  217. not dead.

  218. And I want to talk to you really briefly

  219. about some things

  220. that I have been learning over these years.

  221. Some things that I wish

  222. that I could have said

  223. to my grandparents.

  224. But I didn't know.

  225. I didn't know.

  226. The first thing we know right away

  227. is whenever we come to Scripture

  228. that whenever Scripture

  229. seems to contradict itself,

  230. the assumption most of us say

  231. is that God is wrong.

  232. God did something bad.

  233. God contradicts Himself.

  234. None of us ever say,

  235. well, maybe I'm understanding this wrong.

  236. But the first thing I learned

  237. was that whenever we come to Scripture

  238. that God is consistent,

  239. that He never contradicts Himself,

  240. that He always is truthful

  241. in everything that He does.

  242. The problem is with you

  243. and with me,

  244. that we're not listening to Him

  245. and we're not looking at

  246. what God's Word is actually saying.

  247. The next thing that I learned

  248. as I looked at Paul

  249. and I just read Romans

  250. over and over

  251. and James over and over,

  252. I learned that in Romans,

  253. Paul was talking about

  254. how a man gets to God.

  255. If there's a timeline

  256. and there's a cross,

  257. Paul was before the cross

  258. in Romans

  259. and he's looking at

  260. our journey to the cross.

  261. And he's saying

  262. that we get to the cross

  263. by faith,

  264. faith alone

  265. in the works of Jesus Christ

  266. and His life

  267. that was sacrificed for us

  268. on the cross,

  269. the blood that was shed

  270. and that is the root

  271. of our salvation.

  272. When James talks about it,

  273. when James talks about

  274. faith and works in his book,

  275. what he's talking about

  276. and what he's addressing

  277. is people who are hypocrites

  278. in the church.

  279. People who say

  280. they're Christians

  281. but they're living differently.

  282. And so as Paul's

  283. looking towards the cross,

  284. James is looking back

  285. at the cross,

  286. James is looking at

  287. over his whole life

  288. and he's saying,

  289. are we living lives

  290. that are consistent

  291. to our faith

  292. and our words?

  293. When Paul comes

  294. to the scripture,

  295. he looks at things

  296. from God's perspective.

  297. He's looking down

  298. and seeing

  299. how can we reach God?

  300. When James and James

  301. talks about things,

  302. he's talking about

  303. from man's perspective.

  304. He's looking at

  305. as you look at people

  306. and you look at their lives

  307. and you're seeing

  308. have they reached God?

  309. If you were to ask Paul,

  310. how do I know

  311. that person is a saved person?

  312. Paul would say,

  313. you go into their house

  314. and you look in the fireplace.

  315. How do you know

  316. there's a fire

  317. in the fireplace?

  318. You look.

  319. And if there's a fire there,

  320. you know that something's

  321. going on there.

  322. There's a change

  323. in their life.

  324. You look at their heart.

  325. So only God can do that.

  326. But James says,

  327. if you were to talk to James,

  328. how do I know

  329. that person's saved?

  330. How do you know

  331. that person's been born again?

  332. James would say,

  333. well, I can't look at their heart.

  334. I can't go inside

  335. and see what's going on

  336. in their heart.

  337. But I can walk by their house.

  338. And I can look at the chimney.

  339. And I can know

  340. if there's a fire

  341. in the chimney,

  342. if there's smoke

  343. coming up

  344. out of

  345. the chimney.

  346. James would say

  347. that we are justified

  348. by works.

  349. And what he means by that

  350. is that we prove

  351. that we have this

  352. right relationship

  353. with God,

  354. that God met with us

  355. and that we've been justified

  356. by His works.

  357. And our works show

  358. that we've already

  359. come to faith.

  360. And Paul says

  361. that we are justified

  362. by faith.

  363. And what he's saying

  364. is the only way

  365. we can reach God

  366. is through the life

  367. and sacrifice

  368. of Jesus.

  369. Paul and James

  370. are saying the same thing.

  371. James is saying this,

  372. we come to God

  373. by faith.

  374. but

  375. not by a faith

  376. that is alone.

  377. That we've come

  378. to God

  379. by faith

  380. but that faith

  381. changes us.

  382. And so Paul,

  383. James is trying

  384. to show

  385. the people in his church

  386. what it looks like

  387. to be saved,

  388. how we can be saved.

  389. James is going to talk

  390. about alive faith

  391. and dead faith

  392. and demonic faith.

  393. And he's saying

  394. every one of us

  395. is living one of those.

  396. And he wants to talk

  397. about alive faith,

  398. dead faith,

  399. and demonic faith.

  400. And what he's going to say

  401. is I want to show you

  402. four things that are true.

  403. Four things that are true

  404. about a faith

  405. that is alive.

  406. And so we can just

  407. go through it

  408. and we're going to

  409. fly through this.

  410. You look at your passage

  411. verses 14 through 16.

  412. The first thing you see

  413. is James says

  414. that when the faith

  415. is alive,

  416. what uses it,

  417. my brethren,

  418. if someone says

  419. he has faith

  420. but he has no works,

  421. can that faith save them?

  422. If a brother or sister

  423. is without clothing

  424. and in need of daily food

  425. and then one of you

  426. says to them,

  427. go in peace

  428. and be warned

  429. and be filled

  430. and yet you do not

  431. do anything to help them,

  432. what is necessary,

  433. what use is that?

  434. And James says right away

  435. that a faith that is alive

  436. is not indifferent

  437. to people in need.

  438. That if your faith

  439. is alive,

  440. when you look at people

  441. who are in need,

  442. especially people

  443. within the family of God,

  444. if you see people

  445. that are hurting

  446. and alive faith

  447. draws you towards

  448. those people

  449. and alive faith

  450. prompts you

  451. to do something

  452. that the seed

  453. of the gospel

  454. that's been put

  455. in your life,

  456. when it sees

  457. brothers and sisters,

  458. especially in the family

  459. of God who are in need,

  460. that seed is growing

  461. and that seed draws us

  462. towards people

  463. who are hurting

  464. and who have needs.

  465. If your faith is dead,

  466. he says you can walk away,

  467. you can walk past them,

  468. you cannot be bothered

  469. by them,

  470. you cannot be affected

  471. by them.

  472. Dead faith allows us

  473. not to be affected

  474. by people in needs.

  475. He says dead faith

  476. would say,

  477. as you looked at

  478. those people in needs,

  479. oh, that's too bad,

  480. that's their fault.

  481. Too bad they got

  482. themselves in that situation.

  483. And what he's saying

  484. is a dead person

  485. doesn't remember

  486. that they could be there also

  487. if it wasn't for God's grace

  488. and mercy

  489. in their life.

  490. James goes on

  491. and he says

  492. that alive faith

  493. in verse 17,

  494. even so,

  495. if faith has no works,

  496. it is dead,

  497. being by itself.

  498. He said that if faith

  499. is alive,

  500. that it's not independent

  501. of works,

  502. that faith always

  503. produces works,

  504. faith always produces fruit.

  505. He says basically

  506. in Greek

  507. that faith and works

  508. are like two wings

  509. on a bird

  510. and they have to be there.

  511. They have to work together

  512. and a bird with one wing

  513. just doesn't work

  514. and he says in the same way

  515. that is true

  516. with our life,

  517. that if our faith

  518. is alive,

  519. that there's works

  520. that follow.

  521. That if our faith

  522. is alive

  523. and the word he uses there

  524. is really intense,

  525. if it has no works,

  526. it's dead.

  527. The Greek word

  528. is nekra,

  529. necrotic.

  530. It's gangrene.

  531. That when God looks at us

  532. and our faith is dead,

  533. all he sees is gangrene,

  534. dirty tissue,

  535. something bad.

  536. But in a live faith,

  537. James says,

  538. in a live faith

  539. it will affect our hearts,

  540. it will affect our hands,

  541. it will affect our feet,

  542. it will affect our mouth,

  543. it will affect our money,

  544. it will affect our time usage,

  545. it will affect what we do in there.

  546. You see,

  547. in James' church,

  548. people were coming to church

  549. every day

  550. and they were reading

  551. the Apostles' Creed.

  552. Every day people

  553. were walking into church

  554. and they were dropping

  555. their kids off of childcare

  556. and they were doing communion.

  557. Every day people

  558. were listening to testimonies

  559. over and over

  560. in James' church

  561. as he looked at the people

  562. in his congregation.

  563. He realized that

  564. not many people

  565. were changing.

  566. That their lives

  567. were the same.

  568. Two months before,

  569. six months before,

  570. one year before,

  571. that there wasn't

  572. a change in their hearts,

  573. there wasn't a change

  574. in their actions,

  575. there wasn't a change

  576. in their mannerisms.

  577. And James says,

  578. really bluntly,

  579. if that's true,

  580. your faith is dead.

  581. So maybe the question

  582. we ask ourselves today

  583. is we look at our life.

  584. Has your life changed?

  585. I mean,

  586. are you different

  587. in your walk with God

  588. today

  589. than you were

  590. two months ago?

  591. Six months ago?

  592. Two years ago?

  593. If you were to examine

  594. your walk with the Lord

  595. in your life,

  596. is it different?

  597. And James is saying

  598. it has to be different.

  599. Because if you have

  600. the seed of the gospel

  601. in your life,

  602. if you have Christ

  603. in your heart,

  604. you're going to look

  605. more and more like Him.

  606. And the question

  607. that James put to us

  608. is are we looking

  609. more and more

  610. like Christ

  611. these days?

  612. Or are we looking

  613. more and more

  614. like Tobin?

  615. He says,

  616. a live faith

  617. will change us

  618. and we'll be different.

  619. He goes on

  620. and he says

  621. in verses 18,

  622. he says,

  623. a live faith,

  624. a genuine faith

  625. is not invisible.

  626. But someone may say,

  627. show me your faith.

  628. I have works.

  629. Show me my works.

  630. You have faith.

  631. And what he's trying

  632. to say in the midst

  633. of all of that

  634. is that if you have

  635. a faith that is alive,

  636. people can see it.

  637. People can see

  638. your faith

  639. being lived out.

  640. They can see

  641. a difference

  642. in your world.

  643. He never had place

  644. where people

  645. who come in

  646. and you're talking

  647. to them

  648. and they say,

  649. yeah,

  650. I'm a believer.

  651. I follow Christ.

  652. And you say,

  653. well,

  654. how do I know that?

  655. And you say,

  656. because I said so.

  657. And you said,

  658. well,

  659. show me

  660. the change

  661. in your life.

  662. And the person says,

  663. well,

  664. my faith

  665. is very private.

  666. I don't want

  667. to talk about that.

  668. And James says,

  669. if that's

  670. who we are,

  671. our faith is dead.

  672. It's useless.

  673. It's necrotic.

  674. It's gangrene.

  675. He says,

  676. in a live faith,

  677. you're always

  678. going to be seen.

  679. A live faith

  680. will always

  681. represent itself.

  682. It will always

  683. manifest itself

  684. in relationships.

  685. Relationships

  686. with God.

  687. And relationships

  688. with the people

  689. around us.

  690. And so James

  691. is warning his church,

  692. he's warning us

  693. to be careful

  694. how you think

  695. you are.

  696. Don't think

  697. that your faith

  698. is alive

  699. if it's not.

  700. Man,

  701. I've been running

  702. through this passage

  703. for 40 years now.

  704. And every time

  705. I look at it,

  706. those questions

  707. hit me.

  708. And I have

  709. to ask myself.

  710. Finally,

  711. James says

  712. in verses 19

  713. and 20,

  714. and I think

  715. this is the

  716. hardest one

  717. of all,

  718. verses 19

  719. and 20,

  720. he says,

  721. you believe

  722. that God

  723. is one,

  724. you do well.

  725. The demons

  726. also believe

  727. and they

  728. shudder.

  729. But are you

  730. willing to

  731. recognize,

  732. you foolish fellow,

  733. that your faith

  734. without works

  735. is useless?

  736. what James

  737. says here

  738. is that

  739. faith,

  740. alive faith,

  741. is not just

  742. intellectual.

  743. It's just not

  744. knowing the right

  745. things to say.

  746. It's not just

  747. being theologically

  748. correct.

  749. It's not doing

  750. the right things

  751. and saying the right

  752. things and reading

  753. the right books.

  754. He says

  755. if that's how

  756. we live our life,

  757. then our faith

  758. is demonic.

  759. Did you catch

  760. that?

  761. He says

  762. if your life

  763. is just

  764. intellectual

  765. exercise,

  766. if you're just

  767. reading and

  768. thinking and

  769. learning and

  770. spouting out

  771. things,

  772. but there's no

  773. change in your

  774. life,

  775. it's just words,

  776. it's just

  777. accumulation,

  778. it's just

  779. things that

  780. you're reading

  781. but you're not

  782. doing,

  783. if you're doing

  784. that,

  785. he says your

  786. faith is

  787. demonic.

  788. C.S. Lewis

  789. would say

  790. the best people

  791. to learn

  792. theology from

  793. are demons

  794. because demons

  795. know everything.

  796. They've been

  797. in the presence

  798. of God.

  799. Their theology

  800. is perfect.

  801. Their orthodoxy

  802. is perfect.

  803. In scripture

  804. they're always

  805. shouting out

  806. you're the son,

  807. the holy one

  808. of God,

  809. you've come

  810. to save us,

  811. you've come

  812. to put us

  813. away.

  814. Listen to him.

  815. The demons

  816. know their

  817. Bible.

  818. But their

  819. works are

  820. dead.

  821. And James

  822. is warning

  823. his church,

  824. he's warning

  825. us and he's

  826. saying be

  827. careful,

  828. don't think

  829. that just

  830. because you're

  831. orthodox that

  832. you understand

  833. and you believe

  834. because that's

  835. what the demons

  836. think.

  837. You ever

  838. done this?

  839. You're living

  840. life like you

  841. shouldn't do,

  842. this is me.

  843. And you're

  844. making choices

  845. that are poor,

  846. and you're

  847. doing things

  848. that you

  849. know don't

  850. please the

  851. Lord.

  852. And then

  853. someone asks

  854. you why

  855. you're doing

  856. that.

  857. And sometimes

  858. your response

  859. is, well,

  860. I don't know

  861. why I'm doing

  862. this, but I

  863. still love God,

  864. I still know

  865. God, I still

  866. know God.

  867. And James

  868. says don't

  869. do that

  870. because the

  871. demons

  872. know God.

  873. And they

  874. do something

  875. different.

  876. They know

  877. God and they

  878. shudder.

  879. The Greek

  880. word is they

  881. have these

  882. chills, it's

  883. like a cat

  884. arching his

  885. back.

  886. They know

  887. what's going

  888. to happen

  889. when God

  890. comes.

  891. But James

  892. says sometimes

  893. we just

  894. live these

  895. intellectual

  896. exercises.

  897. And we

  898. say, well, I

  899. know God, I

  900. know God.

  901. And he

  902. says if

  903. knowing God

  904. was enough

  905. to get you

  906. into heaven,

  907. the demons

  908. would be

  909. there.

  910. know God.

  911. Knowing God,

  912. knowing about

  913. God, having a

  914. special agreement

  915. with him, a

  916. special relationship,

  917. if that was

  918. enough to get

  919. you into

  920. heaven, the

  921. demons know

  922. that.

  923. So James is

  924. warning us,

  925. he's saying be

  926. careful, be

  927. careful of what

  928. you believe

  929. because belief

  930. is not enough

  931. to get into

  932. heaven.

  933. And a

  934. live faith

  935. grows and

  936. it's connected

  937. to works, it's

  938. connected to

  939. actions and

  940. it's seen in

  941. friendships and

  942. relationships.

  943. Then James

  944. goes on and

  945. he says, I

  946. want to show

  947. you what a

  948. live faith is

  949. like.

  950. And he

  951. gives us two

  952. examples and

  953. the two examples

  954. cannot be more

  955. opposite than

  956. each other.

  957. One is a

  958. lady named

  959. Rahab.

  960. She's a

  961. pagan.

  962. She's living in

  963. the city of

  964. Jericho.

  965. And one is a

  966. person named

  967. Abraham, the

  968. father of the

  969. faith.

  970. And James

  971. uses both of

  972. those as

  973. examples.

  974. They're totally

  975. opposite in

  976. personality and

  977. background and

  978. everything.

  979. But he says,

  980. this is what a

  981. live faith looks

  982. like.

  983. He says, look at

  984. Rahab.

  985. She's living in

  986. the walls of

  987. Jericho.

  988. We've seen the

  989. walls.

  990. If you go to

  991. Israel, you can

  992. see them.

  993. They're laid

  994. down, but the

  995. archaeologists

  996. uncover them.

  997. And the walls

  998. were like a

  999. series of walls.

  1000. And in between

  1001. the walls, there

  1002. were rooms.

  1003. And the rooms

  1004. were filled with

  1005. weapons and

  1006. businesses and

  1007. houses built into

  1008. the walls.

  1009. And so she's

  1010. living in the

  1011. walls and she's

  1012. carrying out the

  1013. world's oldest

  1014. profession.

  1015. Not a bakery.

  1016. She's a

  1017. prostitute.

  1018. Sometimes people

  1019. get that confused.

  1020. And so she's

  1021. living in there and

  1022. she's hearing these

  1023. stories of God's

  1024. people coming

  1025. through and

  1026. destroying

  1027. everything.

  1028. And everybody's

  1029. afraid.

  1030. And then one day

  1031. the spies, two

  1032. spies come to her

  1033. door and they

  1034. ask her to hide

  1035. them.

  1036. And she hides

  1037. them on the

  1038. roof.

  1039. Now she's

  1040. heard about

  1041. God.

  1042. She's seen him

  1043. moving his

  1044. people through

  1045. the land.

  1046. Somewhere in

  1047. that process, she's

  1048. put faith in

  1049. God.

  1050. Somewhere in that

  1051. process, she's

  1052. saying, this is

  1053. what I need.

  1054. This is what I

  1055. want.

  1056. And so she

  1057. talks to the

  1058. spies.

  1059. When they're

  1060. about to leave,

  1061. she sends the

  1062. people chasing

  1063. them out in a

  1064. different direction.

  1065. That's another

  1066. sermon.

  1067. And she talks

  1068. to them and

  1069. she says, I

  1070. know that your

  1071. God is the God

  1072. of heaven and

  1073. earth.

  1074. She makes a

  1075. proclamation.

  1076. It's her

  1077. faith.

  1078. In Hebrew, she's

  1079. coming to

  1080. faith.

  1081. I know that

  1082. your God

  1083. controls everything.

  1084. I know that

  1085. your God is

  1086. going to take

  1087. care of all

  1088. this land and

  1089. it's going to

  1090. be yours one

  1091. day.

  1092. I just ask it,

  1093. when that

  1094. happens, would

  1095. you remember

  1096. me?

  1097. And the

  1098. scout goes,

  1099. okay, this is

  1100. what I want you

  1101. to do.

  1102. I want you to

  1103. take this red

  1104. ribbon and I

  1105. want you to tie

  1106. it around the

  1107. window of your

  1108. wall.

  1109. And whoever's

  1110. inside your

  1111. house when we

  1112. attack, they

  1113. will be saved.

  1114. But whoever's

  1115. outside of this

  1116. house, they

  1117. will be destroyed.

  1118. And if that

  1119. ribbon falls down,

  1120. the bargain's

  1121. off.

  1122. If you tell

  1123. anybody about

  1124. what's happened,

  1125. the bargain's

  1126. off.

  1127. Think about

  1128. that.

  1129. And so she

  1130. does that.

  1131. Her faith is

  1132. being acted

  1133. out in works.

  1134. In the midst

  1135. of this battle,

  1136. the walls are

  1137. shaking.

  1138. The walls are

  1139. falling down.

  1140. And she's

  1141. living in the

  1142. walls.

  1143. Does that take

  1144. courage and

  1145. faith?

  1146. And the

  1147. scripture says

  1148. that she's

  1149. saved.

  1150. And she's

  1151. brought into the

  1152. family of God.

  1153. And James

  1154. says, look at

  1155. her faith.

  1156. She has

  1157. courage.

  1158. She trusted

  1159. the Lord.

  1160. She made

  1161. this statement

  1162. of faith.

  1163. And she

  1164. lived it out.

  1165. And you

  1166. can see by

  1167. her living

  1168. out that

  1169. that statement

  1170. of faith was

  1171. true and

  1172. righteous and

  1173. good.

  1174. And that

  1175. her faith is

  1176. alive.

  1177. Look at

  1178. Abraham, the

  1179. father of our

  1180. people.

  1181. He was once a

  1182. pagan and

  1183. Ur of Chaldees.

  1184. He was

  1185. worshiping false

  1186. gods, we're

  1187. told.

  1188. He's not

  1189. Jewish.

  1190. There's no

  1191. such thing as

  1192. Jewish people

  1193. before Abraham

  1194. comes.

  1195. And God

  1196. comes to him

  1197. at the age

  1198. of 75.

  1199. He says, I

  1200. want you to

  1201. leave everything.

  1202. He was a

  1203. very wealthy

  1204. businessman.

  1205. He was

  1206. surrounded by

  1207. his family.

  1208. He had a

  1209. lot of

  1210. land.

  1211. I want you

  1212. to leave

  1213. everything.

  1214. I want you

  1215. to go to

  1216. this new

  1217. land where

  1218. I'm going

  1219. to show

  1220. you, and

  1221. you've never

  1222. been there,

  1223. but I'm

  1224. going to

  1225. show you

  1226. this new

  1227. land.

  1228. And we're

  1229. told that

  1230. Abraham

  1231. listens.

  1232. He comes

  1233. to know the

  1234. Lord.

  1235. He puts

  1236. that seed,

  1237. that grain of

  1238. the gospel in

  1239. his life.

  1240. And he

  1241. says, okay.

  1242. But is

  1243. Abraham a

  1244. Christian yet?

  1245. I don't

  1246. know.

  1247. We know that

  1248. the seed went

  1249. into his life.

  1250. It's like Jesus

  1251. telling this parable

  1252. of the sower.

  1253. The message

  1254. went out.

  1255. He accepted it,

  1256. but we don't

  1257. know what's

  1258. going to happen

  1259. to that

  1260. message.

  1261. And so

  1262. Abraham does

  1263. what God

  1264. says.

  1265. He leaves

  1266. everything.

  1267. He goes to

  1268. this foreign

  1269. land.

  1270. And then

  1271. at the

  1272. age of

  1273. 99,

  1274. the three

  1275. things that

  1276. he was

  1277. promised was

  1278. a name that

  1279. would be

  1280. made great,

  1281. land,

  1282. and a

  1283. heritage,

  1284. a massive

  1285. people following

  1286. him.

  1287. At the age

  1288. of 99,

  1289. he still has

  1290. no son.

  1291. And so

  1292. God says,

  1293. I'm going

  1294. to give you

  1295. a son.

  1296. Okay.

  1297. And he

  1298. has faith and

  1299. he trusts God.

  1300. And that

  1301. seed of the

  1302. gospel continues

  1303. to grow and

  1304. gets bigger

  1305. in his

  1306. life.

  1307. then 40

  1308. years after

  1309. he first

  1310. meets God,

  1311. so 40

  1312. years after

  1313. God first

  1314. meets him

  1315. and talks

  1316. to him about

  1317. what he

  1318. wants from

  1319. him,

  1320. God comes

  1321. to him and

  1322. says,

  1323. I want you

  1324. to take

  1325. your son,

  1326. the son

  1327. that you

  1328. love,

  1329. your only

  1330. son.

  1331. It's very

  1332. specific in

  1333. Hebrew.

  1334. He's not

  1335. going to say,

  1336. well, what son

  1337. are you talking

  1338. about?

  1339. God just

  1340. pins him

  1341. down to the

  1342. ground.

  1343. And I

  1344. want you

  1345. to take

  1346. him to

  1347. a far

  1348. way land

  1349. where I'll

  1350. show you.

  1351. And I

  1352. want you

  1353. to make

  1354. a malk

  1355. there.

  1356. In Hebrew

  1357. what he's

  1358. saying is I

  1359. want you

  1360. to do a

  1361. burnt

  1362. offering

  1363. of him.

  1364. So now

  1365. Abraham's

  1366. like 120

  1367. years old.

  1368. And the

  1369. Bible says

  1370. he took

  1371. his son

  1372. with two

  1373. helpers and

  1374. they went

  1375. to that

  1376. land.

  1377. And as

  1378. they get

  1379. to that

  1380. land,

  1381. they're

  1382. about to

  1383. do the

  1384. sacrifice

  1385. he

  1386. tells

  1387. the boys,

  1388. the two

  1389. helpers,

  1390. you stay

  1391. here and

  1392. the boy

  1393. and I

  1394. will go

  1395. worship.

  1396. And when

  1397. we're done

  1398. worshiping,

  1399. we're coming

  1400. back.

  1401. So Abraham,

  1402. he has

  1403. faith.

  1404. He knows

  1405. that Isaac

  1406. is who

  1407. he's supposed

  1408. to have

  1409. the heritage

  1410. in.

  1411. For some

  1412. reason,

  1413. God is

  1414. doing this.

  1415. I don't

  1416. know what's

  1417. going to

  1418. happen,

  1419. but maybe

  1420. God's going

  1421. to raise

  1422. Isaac from

  1423. the dead.

  1424. I don't

  1425. know,

  1426. but I

  1427. know the

  1428. promises

  1429. in Isaac

  1430. and God

  1431. has told

  1432. me to

  1433. sacrifice

  1434. him and

  1435. I just

  1436. need to

  1437. be obedient

  1438. to whatever

  1439. God has

  1440. called me

  1441. to do.

  1442. And we're

  1443. told in the

  1444. passage that

  1445. when he

  1446. gets there

  1447. and he's

  1448. about to

  1449. raise his

  1450. hand with

  1451. the knife,

  1452. God speaks

  1453. to him.

  1454. He says,

  1455. Abraham,

  1456. Abraham,

  1457. don't raise

  1458. your hand

  1459. against the

  1460. son.

  1461. Because now

  1462. I know

  1463. you love

  1464. me more

  1465. than all

  1466. these other

  1467. things.

  1468. Now I

  1469. know that

  1470. you fear

  1471. me more

  1472. than all

  1473. these other

  1474. things.

  1475. James tells

  1476. us as we

  1477. look at

  1478. Abraham's

  1479. life,

  1480. we see a

  1481. life of

  1482. obedience.

  1483. That kernel

  1484. of truth,

  1485. the gospel,

  1486. the message

  1487. entered into

  1488. his life,

  1489. but it

  1490. hadn't been

  1491. fruitioned yet.

  1492. And it

  1493. wasn't until

  1494. 40 years

  1495. later when

  1496. these works

  1497. happened and

  1498. he showed

  1499. that his

  1500. faith was

  1501. true by

  1502. his works.

  1503. But James

  1504. says he

  1505. was justified

  1506. by his

  1507. works.

  1508. He didn't

  1509. come to

  1510. faith.

  1511. His faith

  1512. was seen

  1513. to be true

  1514. and real

  1515. because of

  1516. his obedience.

  1517. And so

  1518. James tells

  1519. us this is

  1520. what it looks

  1521. like to

  1522. follow the

  1523. Lord.

  1524. God.

  1525. We're told

  1526. in the

  1527. passage later

  1528. on that

  1529. Abraham is

  1530. called a

  1531. friend of

  1532. God because

  1533. he obeys.

  1534. What a

  1535. great title.

  1536. Wouldn't

  1537. you like to

  1538. have a

  1539. business card

  1540. with Tobin

  1541. Miller,

  1542. friend of

  1543. God?

  1544. If even

  1545. neater,

  1546. if God

  1547. was the

  1548. one who's

  1549. saying,

  1550. he's my

  1551. friend.

  1552. That would

  1553. be amazing.

  1554. in John

  1555. 15,

  1556. Jesus says

  1557. that all

  1558. of his

  1559. children

  1560. are his

  1561. friend.

  1562. But you

  1563. know what

  1564. he says?

  1565. You're my

  1566. friend if

  1567. you obey

  1568. me.

  1569. Because as

  1570. we obey,

  1571. as we walk

  1572. with him,

  1573. our faith

  1574. is made

  1575. full and

  1576. true and

  1577. real and

  1578. seen by

  1579. everybody

  1580. around us.

  1581. Finally,

  1582. James ends

  1583. in verse 26

  1584. where just as

  1585. the body

  1586. with the

  1587. spirit is

  1588. dead,

  1589. so also

  1590. faith without

  1591. works is

  1592. dead.

  1593. What he's

  1594. basically saying

  1595. there is that

  1596. if you don't

  1597. have works,

  1598. if people

  1599. cannot see a

  1600. difference in

  1601. your life,

  1602. if they can't

  1603. see a change

  1604. in your life,

  1605. then your

  1606. faith is not

  1607. real faith.

  1608. How are we

  1609. doing?

  1610. I mean,

  1611. when people

  1612. look at your

  1613. life and

  1614. they look at

  1615. your faith,

  1616. do they see

  1617. a faith that's

  1618. indifferent to

  1619. the needs of

  1620. people?

  1621. Or do they

  1622. see a faith

  1623. that is

  1624. concerned with

  1625. needy and

  1626. hurt people?

  1627. When people

  1628. look at your

  1629. life, do they

  1630. see a faith

  1631. that's independent

  1632. of works?

  1633. It's just

  1634. words, it's

  1635. just words,

  1636. it's just

  1637. words, but

  1638. it's nothing

  1639. else besides

  1640. words.

  1641. When people

  1642. look at your

  1643. life, do

  1644. they see a

  1645. faith that

  1646. is invisible,

  1647. that it

  1648. can't be

  1649. seen by

  1650. everyone?

  1651. It's

  1652. private.

  1653. When people

  1654. look at your

  1655. life, do

  1656. they see

  1657. something that

  1658. is intellectual?

  1659. Do you

  1660. talk about

  1661. your life a

  1662. lot?

  1663. Do they

  1664. talk about

  1665. your faith

  1666. a lot?

  1667. But all

  1668. they know

  1669. about you

  1670. is your

  1671. talk.

  1672. They don't

  1673. see fruit.

  1674. they don't

  1675. see works

  1676. coming forth

  1677. from that.

  1678. What kind

  1679. of faith

  1680. do they

  1681. see in

  1682. us?

  1683. I'm

  1684. over,

  1685. but I have

  1686. one last

  1687. thought to

  1688. give you.

  1689. God's

  1690. love.

  1691. I have

  1692. heard that

  1693. you love

  1694. me more

  1695. than all

  1696. these things.

  1697. Your works

  1698. have shown,

  1699. they've proven,

  1700. they've borne

  1701. fruit, that

  1702. your faith is

  1703. true and

  1704. sincere, you

  1705. love me.

  1706. Fast forward

  1707. 2,000 years

  1708. on the same

  1709. mountain in

  1710. Jerusalem.

  1711. God, our

  1712. Father,

  1713. takes his

  1714. only son.

  1715. He doesn't

  1716. put him

  1717. there for

  1718. display in

  1719. his act of

  1720. do I love

  1721. you more

  1722. than all

  1723. these other

  1724. things.

  1725. We're told

  1726. God the

  1727. Father

  1728. crucifies and

  1729. sacrifices his

  1730. son for

  1731. you and

  1732. for me.

  1733. I know

  1734. it's not in

  1735. scripture,

  1736. but I wonder

  1737. if God is

  1738. saying there as

  1739. he's doing

  1740. that.

  1741. I love you

  1742. more than

  1743. this.

  1744. I love you

  1745. more than

  1746. this.

  1747. The question

  1748. I have for us

  1749. as a church

  1750. and as

  1751. individuals is

  1752. when we

  1753. think of

  1754. that,

  1755. when we

  1756. think of

  1757. what God

  1758. has done

  1759. for us

  1760. in the

  1761. sacrificing

  1762. of his

  1763. son,

  1764. what kind

  1765. of emotions

  1766. stir up

  1767. inside of

  1768. you?

  1769. When we

  1770. think of

  1771. Christ being

  1772. crucified for

  1773. you,

  1774. and God

  1775. saying,

  1776. I love

  1777. you,

  1778. and I

  1779. never want

  1780. you to

  1781. doubt how

  1782. much I

  1783. love you,

  1784. let me

  1785. prove it

  1786. through

  1787. killing my

  1788. son.

  1789. What are

  1790. the thoughts

  1791. that come

  1792. into your

  1793. head?

  1794. What are

  1795. the actions

  1796. that are

  1797. stirred up

  1798. inside of

  1799. you?

  1800. What are

  1801. the emotions

  1802. that you

  1803. feel?

  1804. What are

  1805. the things

  1806. that come

  1807. into you

  1808. as you

  1809. think of

  1810. these

  1811. things?

  1812. James

  1813. says

  1814. that if

  1815. your faith

  1816. is alive,

  1817. your heart

  1818. is going

  1819. to be

  1820. stirred,

  1821. that you're

  1822. going to

  1823. be

  1824. different,

  1825. that you're

  1826. going to

  1827. look at

  1828. people

  1829. differently,

  1830. that you're

  1831. going to

  1832. look at

  1833. your life

  1834. differently,

  1835. you're

  1836. going to

  1837. do things

  1838. differently.

  1839. You have

  1840. to,

  1841. because your

  1842. faith is

  1843. alive.

  1844. And if you

  1845. think of the

  1846. cross and you

  1847. think of what

  1848. Christ has

  1849. done,

  1850. what God

  1851. has done

  1852. for you,

  1853. and it

  1854. doesn't

  1855. elicit a

  1856. change of

  1857. movement,

  1858. an emotion,

  1859. a thought,

  1860. you're not

  1861. doing it to

  1862. get saved.

  1863. I mean,

  1864. if we're

  1865. God's

  1866. children,

  1867. we're already

  1868. saved.

  1869. But James

  1870. says you're

  1871. doing it

  1872. because you

  1873. love God.

  1874. God's

  1875. love God.

  1876. So my

  1877. question to

  1878. close our

  1879. time with

  1880. is do you

  1881. love God?

  1882. Do you

  1883. love God?

  1884. love God?

  1885. Do you

  1886. love Him?

  1887. James says

  1888. if we do,

  1889. our life is

  1890. going to be

  1891. different.

  1892. It's going to be

  1893. marked by works

  1894. and fruit

  1895. that is going

  1896. to be seen

  1897. in every

  1898. relationship of

  1899. your life

  1900. and in

  1901. your relationship

  1902. with God.

  1903. Father, we

  1904. thank you for

  1905. this day.

  1906. We thank you

  1907. for your

  1908. son.

  1909. We thank you

  1910. for the

  1911. book of

  1912. James,

  1913. which is

  1914. hard.

  1915. Some of

  1916. us are

  1917. hard-headed.

  1918. We need to

  1919. get beat up

  1920. sometimes.

  1921. But the

  1922. amazing thing

  1923. is that you

  1924. always pour

  1925. grace and

  1926. mercy over

  1927. us.

  1928. And so we

  1929. come before

  1930. you and we

  1931. look at this

  1932. passage and

  1933. we,

  1934. I pray that

  1935. none of us

  1936. don't go to

  1937. sleep this

  1938. week in some

  1939. way and not

  1940. think about

  1941. what is my

  1942. faith really

  1943. like?

  1944. Lord, show

  1945. us if our

  1946. faith is

  1947. alive.

  1948. Show us if

  1949. our faith is

  1950. dead.

  1951. Show us if

  1952. our faith is

  1953. demonic.

  1954. And wherever

  1955. we are in that

  1956. journey, Lord,

  1957. we just need

  1958. you and we

  1959. love you.

  1960. And we ask

  1961. you to change

  1962. us and to

  1963. make us

  1964. people that

  1965. are different,

  1966. people that

  1967. are seen as

  1968. different to

  1969. the world.

  1970. Again, not

  1971. because we're

  1972. trying to earn

  1973. your favor,

  1974. because there's

  1975. no way your

  1976. son did that

  1977. for us, but

  1978. because we

  1979. love you.

  1980. God, I pray

  1981. for this

  1982. church.

  1983. I know that

  1984. I don't pray

  1985. for people as

  1986. much as James

  1987. did, but

  1988. what I pray

  1989. for us,

  1990. that when

  1991. people look at

  1992. our words,

  1993. but more

  1994. importantly,

  1995. when they look

  1996. at our

  1997. actions,

  1998. they would

  1999. see a

  2000. church and

  2001. a people

  2002. that's been

  2003. radically

  2004. transformed by

  2005. your son in

  2006. the gospel,

  2007. that they

  2008. would see a

  2009. church and a

  2010. people that

  2011. loves you,

  2012. and that you

  2013. would teach us

  2014. each right now

  2015. what that looks

  2016. like, and how

  2017. we're to live

  2018. that love out

  2019. all of our

  2020. lives.

  2021. we love you,

  2022. we pray these

  2023. things in your

  2024. son Jesus' name,

  2025. amen.
