  1. The scripture reading comes from the book of Genesis, chapters 1 and 2. Please follow along your bulletin.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  2. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  3. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep.

  4. And the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

  5. Then God said, Let there be light.

  6. God said, There is a light and a light.

  7. And there was light.

  8. God saw the light was good, and God separated the light from the darkness.

  9. God called the light day.

  10. And the darkness He called night.

  11. And there was evening, and there was morning, one day.

  12. Then God said, Let us make man in our image, according to our likeness.

  13. And let them rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky.

  14. And over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

  15. God created man in His own image.

  16. In the image of God, He created him.

  17. Male and female, He created them.

  18. God said,

  19. God blessed them.

  20. And God said to them, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it.

  21. And rule over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the sky, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.

  22. Then God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which is fruit yielding seed.

  23. It shall be food for you.

  24. And to every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the sky, and to everything that moves on the earth, which has life, I have given every green plant for food.

  25. And it was so.

  26. At ito nga ang nangyari.

  27. Yes, this is such a chance.

  28. God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good.

  29. And there was evening, and there was morning, the sixth day.

  30. At lubas siyang nasiyahan.

  31. Do shunhao.

  32. Then in chapter 2, we find this.

  33. Then the Lord God said, It is not good for the man to be alone.

  34. I will make a helper suitable for him.

  35. Hindi mabuti ang mag-isa ang tao.

  36. Bibigyan ko siya ng angkop na makakasama at makakatulong.

  37. Na yun tukoy pat ho, fo'y yuwa it ha, chau yuk o puing ao pong jod ha.

  38. Out of the ground, the Lord God formed every beast of the field, and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them.

  39. And whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name.

  40. The man gave names to all the cattle, to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field.

  41. Ngunit wala sa isa man sa mga ito, ang nababagay na makasama at makatulong niya.

  42. But for Adam, there was not found a helper suitable for him.

  43. And so the Lord caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept.

  44. Then he took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place.

  45. The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which he had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.

  49. The man said, this is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh.

  50. She shall be called woman.

  51. Babae ang ito'i ta tawag sa kanya, sapagat sa lalaki shai kinuha.

  52. Ngö yin, yuwa ta si chong namin shun sa chun lai de.

  53. Because she was taken out of man.

  54. For this reason, a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife.

  55. And they shall become one flesh, eti.

  56. Sila'y nagiging isa.

  57. And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.

  58. This is God's word.

  59. How you guys doing?

  60. Oh man, you just heard the very first words spoken by God in history.

  61. How you guys doing?

  62. I understood the two dialects in the back, but I didn't understand the dialect in the front.

  63. So if anybody could help me.

  64. What country is that from?

  65. Crikey.

  66. Okay.

  67. Yeah.

  68. Hey, we are, if you're here for the first time, my name is Tobin Miller.

  69. I'm a teaching pastor here, one of the pastors here.

  70. And we are going to look at the book of Genesis for five weeks.

  71. In your chair, you should have had the book of Genesis we printed out for you.

  72. I love these things.

  73. I carry mine around.

  74. I like just something I can stick in my pocket.

  75. And so the challenge is, is that you would read a chapter a day.

  76. Okay.

  77. So we're going to do it for five weeks.

  78. We're not going to still cover all of it.

  79. But that means by next Sunday, we come back together.

  80. You should be at chapter what?

  81. Seven, yeah, six, seven, eight.

  82. And I was like, I think it's Jesus.

  83. I don't know.

  84. Yeah, yeah.

  85. Okay.

  86. Anyway, but we want to look at this because I think it's one of my favorite books.

  87. And I know I say that about a lot of books.

  88. Actually, it's a book that we think we'll probably cover after we finish Luke sometime next fall.

  89. And we want to lay down some tracks, some foundations for everything that we've been talking about in the book of Luke.

  90. I mean, Genesis is the book of beginnings.

  91. There's a lot of beginning things here.

  92. It talks about creation and fall and redemption and restoration and sin and grace and love and community and man and woman and identity and relationship and journey.

  93. And we talk about journey a lot and the journey begins here for us.

  94. And sometimes I think that we forget that.

  95. We don't realize when we read the book of Genesis what we're reading and how important it is.

  96. Because 400 years after being in slavery, so 3,400 years ago, Moses leads the people out of a land full of idols.

  97. And he leads them to this promised land and he pens a text unlike any other text which is going to influence all of creation and all generations and all cultures forever.

  98. And he begins with the words,

  99. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  100. Can you read that for me?

  101. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

  102. You know, I don't think that we realize what those words meant and what they mean.

  103. Thomas Cahill, in his book, The Gift of the Jews, says that these words are the greatest gifts that the Jewish people have given to all cultures and societies in the world throughout history.

  104. In fact, he says these words influenced mankind in a way that we will never fully comprehend or understand.

  105. Because you see, at that point in time, there was no such thing as a personal God.

  106. There was no such thing as a God who cared.

  107. There was no such thing as a God who created.

  108. There was no such thing as a God who wanted a relationship.

  109. If you go back and you study all the myths of creation, all the creation myths,

  110. they had certain things in common, but that was not one of them.

  111. They all shared this idea that the universe was filled by many gods.

  112. And these were little gods.

  113. They were finite gods.

  114. They were angry gods.

  115. They were limited in power.

  116. They were fallible.

  117. They were naughty.

  118. They did capricious things.

  119. They were corrupt.

  120. They were dependent upon man.

  121. And so if you wanted to know God, like if you wanted to know Seamus, the son of the God,

  122. you would go out and you would observe and look at the sun.

  123. If you wanted to understand Dagon, the God of grain, you would get drunk.

  124. Or that you would go out and look at a wheat field.

  125. If you wanted to understand Yamin, the God of the sea, you would go to the sea and you would look at the shore

  126. and you would look at the waves and from that you would try to extrapolate what God is like.

  127. And people in that day, they lived in amazing amounts of fear.

  128. I don't think you understand this.

  129. I don't understand it because I look at it and I read it and I'm trying to understand what it goes,

  130. what's happening there.

  131. And I kind of transposed my day on this day.

  132. But in those days, it was crazy.

  133. The average person walked in fear.

  134. They sacrificed things to all these gods.

  135. Often they sacrificed their children to these gods.

  136. They left things on idols and they did things and they hoped to be good enough

  137. with the hope that they would influence the gods and find the gods' favor.

  138. You know that some of them actually believed that the stars and the moon could control man's destiny.

  139. And some of the people would actually shape and arrange their houses and their temples

  140. in just such a way that the environment and nature would kind of come to a convergence

  141. and there would be incredible peace and prosperity.

  142. I know that's impossible to believe in today's day and age, right?

  143. But in, I'm joking.

  144. But in that day and age, that's what people believed.

  145. Humans were looked at as scum.

  146. Pawn scum.

  147. We were only created because the gods had things they didn't want to do.

  148. And so the things were so bad, the gods didn't want to do them,

  149. they created man so that you and I would do that.

  150. I mean, life was full of competition.

  151. Life was rough.

  152. Life was about dominance.

  153. Life was brief.

  154. Life was violent.

  155. Life was about control.

  156. There was no sense of meaning or purpose for a person's life 3,400 years ago

  157. when they first heard these words.

  158. Some people would say that's true of us today,

  159. that we really haven't changed that much in 3,400 years.

  160. But when Moses penned these words,

  161. when he said,

  162. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,

  163. he did something revolutionary,

  164. and he started something that changed everybody.

  165. Do you understand that?

  166. He goes on in the first three verses.

  167. He says,

  168. In the beginning,

  169. and he gives this picture of God,

  170. and he has this imagery of God creating,

  171. and it's powerful.

  172. It's kind of like this dance.

  173. God's in this dance,

  174. and it's poetry in Hebrew.

  175. And when you read it in Hebrew,

  176. you're like,

  177. Wow, there is something amazing going on there.

  178. In the beginning,

  179. God created the heavens and earth.

  180. You see God,

  181. and the earth was formless and void.

  182. It's almost like,

  183. I asked Aldrin before,

  184. Ornel,

  185. if he could play the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky,

  186. because it's kind of like that.

  187. And when you read Hebrew,

  188. it's meant to be like,

  189. da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da,

  190. boom, boom, boom.

  191. And you're watching this fireworks display,

  192. and you see day one,

  193. boom, boom, boom.

  194. And you're like,

  195. Wow, I can't get any better than that.

  196. And all of a sudden,

  197. boom, boom, boom.

  198. Day two,

  199. you're like,

  200. Oh my gosh.

  201. And day three,

  202. boom, boom, boom.

  203. And you're kind of like sitting at the harbor,

  204. and you're going,

  205. Well, when's this thing going to end?

  206. And if that's not the end,

  207. then the next thing's going to have to be amazing,

  208. because what I just saw was incredible.

  209. And you see this story of God the Father creating.

  210. You see this story of the Holy Spirit hovering over the waters,

  211. and he's in the same imagery in Luke,

  212. that he's this dove,

  213. and he's doing his work.

  214. And then you see this image of God speaking.

  215. And he creates with his spoken word.

  216. And we know that in the book of John,

  217. it's in your bulletin for you,

  218. it says,

  219. In the beginning was the word,

  220. and the word was with God,

  221. and the word was God.

  222. And the word became flesh,

  223. and it dwelt among us.

  224. And the word is who?

  225. Oh, come on, guys.

  226. There's only two answers in church, right?

  227. God and Jesus, right?

  228. The word was who?

  229. The word was Jesus.

  230. And so we see this story being played out,

  231. and we see this fireworks display,

  232. and in that day,

  233. no one would have ever thought that.

  234. Because when they thought of God,

  235. they thought of me.

  236. They didn't think of them or us.

  237. And so it was always this individualistic person,

  238. and the gods created because they had a need.

  239. But what the Bible says,

  240. from the very beginning of time,

  241. God and three persons equal in everything.

  242. God and three persons were together.

  243. They were experiencing community,

  244. love, relationship, fellowship.

  245. It was a party,

  246. and they needed nothing.

  247. They needed nothing.

  248. In fact, it says it was so out of control

  249. and so fantastic,

  250. that all of a sudden,

  251. they looked at each other,

  252. and they go,

  253. wow, this is amazing.

  254. Shouldn't we share this?

  255. Shouldn't we allow other things

  256. and other creatures to come a part of this?

  257. Shouldn't we allow them to be a part of these things?

  258. Shouldn't we allow them to come into our community

  259. or our fellowship?

  260. John 17, Jesus praised that, remember?

  261. Jesus praised, and he says,

  262. dear Father,

  263. please allow them to come into the relationship

  264. that you and I have,

  265. because we want them to be a part of what's going on.

  266. We want them to experience this love,

  267. this care, this peace,

  268. all of these things.

  269. And so we have this story

  270. of God creating and God creating.

  271. He creates out of nothing.

  272. Boom, boom, boom, boom.

  273. Good, good, good.

  274. At the end of it,

  275. he says, it's good, it's good, it's good, it's good, it's good.

  276. And what he's just saying

  277. is that's a reflection of God.

  278. It's a reflection of his character,

  279. and the fireworks are going off,

  280. and it gets better, and it gets better,

  281. and it gets better.

  282. And it's interesting,

  283. because when you study Hebrew,

  284. there's no word in Hebrew for nature.

  285. In biblical Hebrew,

  286. there's no such thing as nature,

  287. because they realize

  288. that nothing happens naturally.

  289. The only word that is there

  290. in creation is creation,

  291. because they realize

  292. that everything that is,

  293. everything that was,

  294. has to be created,

  295. it has to be sustained,

  296. it has to be controlled,

  297. it has to be held up

  298. by God's love and his character.

  299. And when the people heard this

  300. at that time,

  301. 3,400 years ago,

  302. it would have been amazing

  303. when the psalmist wrote,

  304. the heavens are declaring

  305. the glory of the Lord.

  306. When you go out tonight,

  307. and if you're in a place

  308. that you can see stars,

  309. look up.

  310. And that's what David wrote,

  311. and he penned,

  312. and he said,

  313. all of creation reflects God's image.

  314. And it's so amazing,

  315. and it's so wonderful

  316. that God wants to bring us in

  317. to this relationship.

  318. No other world religion,

  319. no other world thought,

  320. no one at that time

  321. ever thought any of those things.

  322. Man was just to be used.

  323. Man was not to share

  324. in what God was doing.

  325. And then at the end

  326. of the 18th, 12th children,

  327. Moses, he basically says,

  328. he wants to say,

  329. okay, it's gonna get better,

  330. it's gonna get better,

  331. it's gonna get better,

  332. and finally he says,

  333. humans.

  334. And it's like,

  335. dun, dun, dun,

  336. boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom, boom,

  337. and you're like,

  338. okay, it can't get any better than this.

  339. God creates us.

  340. Because he wants to be with us,

  341. and he wants us to be with him

  342. in a relationship

  343. so that we can experience

  344. everything that he's doing

  345. and creating

  346. and say, that is amazing.

  347. I mean, you do that sometimes,

  348. don't we?

  349. You're watching a TV show,

  350. and it's so incredible

  351. or crazy,

  352. you call up your best friend

  353. and say, hey,

  354. you gotta turn on TV,

  355. you gotta watch this right now.

  356. I mean, you go outside

  357. and you see the stars in the sky,

  358. and it's just,

  359. wow, there's stars in Hong Kong.

  360. I didn't know there were stars

  361. in Hong Kong.

  362. I didn't know that

  363. until we moved over to the Poc Fulam,

  364. and I see stars here,

  365. and I hear birds here.

  366. And the scripture says

  367. that it's so incredible

  368. that when we hear it,

  369. we yell out,

  370. God.

  371. And we wanna call people up

  372. and say, hey,

  373. you need to come see this

  374. because this is incredible.

  375. And Moses,

  376. in the last first two chapters,

  377. the creation of man

  378. is so amazing

  379. that he talks about it

  380. two times.

  381. Chapter one and chapter two,

  382. I have them both written

  383. in your bulletin for you,

  384. and we're gonna look at them,

  385. and what I wanna share

  386. really briefly,

  387. because this is,

  388. I'm just kinda skimming the top.

  389. I'm hoping that you'll go back,

  390. you'll read a chapter a day,

  391. you'll think about

  392. what does this mean,

  393. what does this tell me about God.

  394. For the next five weeks,

  395. we're gonna keep hitting this

  396. and hitting this

  397. and talking about these themes

  398. about relationships and God.

  399. And what I see here,

  400. very specifically,

  401. is this,

  402. that God creates you and I

  403. out of dust.

  404. Everything else in the passages,

  405. day one, day two,

  406. day three, day four,

  407. he speaks and they pop up,

  408. he speaks and they pop up,

  409. he speaks and they pop up,

  410. and in day six,

  411. it says he goes over

  412. and he picks up some Adam,

  413. the most insignificant,

  414. lowly, irreducible thing

  415. in Hebrew,

  416. and he starts to shape it,

  417. and he blows his spirit into it,

  418. and he brings out man.

  419. And the fireworks blow off

  420. and they go crazy,

  421. and as people are reading this

  422. and they're thinking of this,

  423. they're saying,

  424. that makes no sense to us

  425. because we've never heard that before.

  426. But now that we hear it

  427. for the first time,

  428. it makes all the sense.

  429. And what I want us to think about

  430. and read as we look in this passage,

  431. the first section,

  432. is what Moses is trying to tell us,

  433. what we need to hear,

  434. what we need to understand,

  435. is that you and I

  436. are made in God's image.

  437. that every person here,

  438. every person that ever was,

  439. every person that walked

  440. the face of the earth,

  441. Moses is telling us

  442. that we are made

  443. in the image of God.

  444. 3,400 years ago

  445. when the people heard this,

  446. there was no way

  447. they could comprehend that

  448. because no one would have

  449. ever said such a thing,

  450. but the minute they heard that,

  451. Moses went on and says,

  452. because you're made in God's image,

  453. that you are invested

  454. with value,

  455. dignity,

  456. and worth.

  457. Everyone,

  458. look to your left.

  459. Just humor me.

  460. Look to your left.

  461. Made in the image of God.

  462. Look to your right.

  463. Made in the image of God.

  464. The boss

  465. who you're going to walk

  466. into his office on Monday

  467. and you really,

  468. really dislike him.

  469. Come on!

  470. Made in the image of God.

  471. Your worst enemy.

  472. Women,

  473. your husband.

  474. right beside you.

  475. Men,

  476. your wife

  477. right beside you.

  478. That weird,

  479. obnoxious,

  480. Texas neighbor

  481. who lives next door

  482. and he thinks America

  483. is the only country

  484. and he thinks American

  485. is actually a real language.

  486. the terrorist

  487. who straps a bomb

  488. on his back

  489. and he walks in

  490. to destroy

  491. innocent life.

  492. Made

  493. in the image

  494. of God.

  495. When Moses said

  496. those words,

  497. no one

  498. would have understood

  499. those things.

  500. The question is,

  501. do you really

  502. believe that?

  503. Do you believe

  504. that the person

  505. to your left,

  506. to your right,

  507. your boss,

  508. your spouse,

  509. do you really believe

  510. that they're made

  511. in the image of God?

  512. Do you really believe

  513. they have value

  514. and dignity

  515. and worth?

  516. The beggar

  517. that we're going

  518. to bump in today

  519. as we walk out of here

  520. and he smells

  521. and he stinks

  522. and he hasn't taken

  523. a bath in a long time,

  524. do we really believe

  525. that he's made

  526. in the image of God?

  527. That God's watermark

  528. is on him?

  529. God's fingerprint

  530. is on him?

  531. Do we really,

  532. really believe that?

  533. When the people

  534. heard this passage,

  535. they would have understood

  536. that no matter

  537. how bad

  538. I've blown it,

  539. no matter how many

  540. mistakes I've made,

  541. no matter how many

  542. times I've failed God,

  543. no matter how many

  544. times I've walked away,

  545. God is still pursuing me

  546. because I am

  547. made

  548. in the image

  549. of God.

  550. what would it be like

  551. if we were a church

  552. and people could walk

  553. in here,

  554. no matter where

  555. they're from,

  556. no matter what

  557. background,

  558. no matter how they

  559. smelled,

  560. no matter how they

  561. looked,

  562. no matter how bad

  563. they've blown it

  564. and they were loved,

  565. they were accepted,

  566. they were cared for,

  567. what would that look

  568. like?

  569. I think that's the

  570. church God wants us

  571. to be.

  572. But we'll never be

  573. that until we

  574. understand made

  575. in the image

  576. of God.

  577. The passage goes on

  578. and Moses says,

  579. he says basically

  580. that we are made

  581. in the image,

  582. he says we are

  583. mirrors,

  584. that we are mirrors

  585. that are caused

  586. to reflect God.

  587. Mirrors are independent,

  588. they don't produce

  589. their own light,

  590. they don't find out

  591. their own power,

  592. only thing a mirror

  593. does is it reflects

  594. something.

  595. And that idea of image

  596. means that we are

  597. this mirror and that

  598. we are made to reflect

  599. and to take in God's

  600. glory,

  601. God's passion,

  602. and that we derive

  603. all of our significance

  604. from God.

  605. That's what the people

  606. of 3,400 years

  607. would have understood,

  608. they would understand

  609. that their purpose,

  610. they are only complete

  611. as they face God

  612. as a mirror

  613. and they reflect

  614. God's image

  615. and his power

  616. and his glory

  617. to all of creation.

  618. But the passage

  619. says that something

  620. happened,

  621. the mirrors got broken

  622. and we lose

  623. our relationship

  624. with God,

  625. we lose our orientation

  626. with God

  627. and still we're empty

  628. because we can't

  629. fill it up

  630. and so what we do

  631. is we take our mirror

  632. around and we find

  633. something that we

  634. want to reflect.

  635. We find something

  636. that looks good,

  637. we find something

  638. that brings us hope,

  639. we find something

  640. that brings meaning

  641. to our life.

  642. We all do that,

  643. don't we?

  644. We find something

  645. that we want

  646. to be about

  647. and be like

  648. and so we orient

  649. our mirrors,

  650. our lives,

  651. we go into

  652. a relationship

  653. with our work,

  654. with our family,

  655. with our friends,

  656. with our education,

  657. with our relationships,

  658. sometimes with our children,

  659. we all orient

  660. our mirrors

  661. towards something

  662. and Moses says

  663. in Genesis 1,

  664. 2,

  665. and 3

  666. that we are meant

  667. to orient

  668. towards God.

  669. In fact,

  670. he says that's

  671. why we're made

  672. and if you're

  673. orienting towards

  674. anything else,

  675. if you're reflecting

  676. your university,

  677. your job,

  678. your relationships,

  679. if you're reflecting

  680. any of those things

  681. in the mirror

  682. of your life,

  683. in your relationships,

  684. Moses says you're

  685. incomplete,

  686. you're not who

  687. you're made to be,

  688. you will never

  689. function the way

  690. you're supposed to be,

  691. you will always

  692. feel lonely,

  693. you'll always feel

  694. depressed,

  695. you'll always feel

  696. empty,

  697. you'll always feel

  698. hollow because you

  699. and I were made

  700. for one purpose

  701. and that's to have

  702. a relationship

  703. with God

  704. and we're made

  705. in such a way

  706. that we reflect

  707. his image.

  708. So the question

  709. is this,

  710. what are you

  711. reflecting today?

  712. What is it

  713. that you're

  714. orienting your life

  715. towards?

  716. What is it

  717. you're trying

  718. to find meaning

  719. for,

  720. purpose for,

  721. significance for,

  722. what is it

  723. in your life

  724. that you're

  725. turning towards,

  726. what is it

  727. that you're

  728. trying to say

  729. this is who I am,

  730. this is what I

  731. want to be,

  732. this is what I

  733. want people to

  734. see me as,

  735. this is what I

  736. want to reflect,

  737. what is that

  738. thing?

  739. Maybe you

  740. don't know.

  741. And if you're

  742. like me,

  743. you have to have

  744. people around you

  745. all the time

  746. and you ask

  747. them questions

  748. like what do

  749. you think I

  750. reflect today?

  751. What's the

  752. most important

  753. thing in my

  754. life?

  755. What am I

  756. talking about

  757. all the time?

  758. What gives

  759. me value?

  760. What makes

  761. me excited?

  762. What makes

  763. me say,

  764. wow,

  765. this is amazing,

  766. I need to

  767. do this.

  768. What is it?

  769. What is it?

  770. What is it?

  771. And Moses

  772. says in Genesis

  773. that if it's

  774. anything else

  775. but God,

  776. then we're not

  777. acting the way

  778. we're supposed

  779. to be,

  780. that you and I

  781. can only find

  782. meaning and

  783. purpose and

  784. significance in

  785. our relationship

  786. with God.

  787. And anything

  788. else,

  789. anything other

  790. things that we

  791. do,

  792. we're living

  793. counter to the

  794. design that

  795. we're made

  796. by God.

  797. and we'll

  798. always feel

  799. empty and

  800. we'll always

  801. feel hard,

  802. we'll always

  803. feel disappointed.

  804. You and I

  805. were made to

  806. reflect God.

  807. So we're made

  808. in his image.

  809. We have value

  810. and worth and

  811. dignity,

  812. we're made in

  813. his image,

  814. we're made to

  815. reflect him to

  816. everything around

  817. us and the

  818. minute we don't

  819. do that,

  820. the scripture

  821. says the minute

  822. we don't do

  823. that,

  824. we bring death.

  825. And I know

  826. that's a hard

  827. word and a

  828. hard idea but

  829. anytime we don't

  830. reflect the way

  831. we're meant to

  832. be,

  833. we're bringing

  834. death to

  835. ourself and

  836. we're bringing

  837. death to the

  838. people around

  839. us.

  840. Because what

  841. we're saying is

  842. this is of more

  843. value than the

  844. God that I'm

  845. reflecting.

  846. And the people

  847. listen to you

  848. and they follow

  849. you.

  850. You're not

  851. bringing life,

  852. you're not

  853. bringing purpose,

  854. you're bringing

  855. death to your

  856. children, to your

  857. spouses, to your

  858. family, to people

  859. in your office.

  860. The passage goes

  861. on in the second

  862. part and I'm going

  863. to run through

  864. this because I

  865. want us to

  866. think about

  867. this.

  868. But what he

  869. says is not

  870. only are we

  871. made in the

  872. image of God

  873. but you and

  874. I were made

  875. for a relationship,

  876. we're made to be

  877. a part of a

  878. community, we

  879. need each other

  880. and again 3,400

  881. years ago no

  882. one ever would

  883. have thought this

  884. or heard this.

  885. Go back and

  886. read the passage

  887. tonight.

  888. Think about it,

  889. Adam without

  890. sin, he's

  891. perfect, he's

  892. very intelligent,

  893. he has all the

  894. wealth in the

  895. world, he has

  896. no competition,

  897. he talks to

  898. God face to

  899. face, he walks

  900. with God in the

  901. garden, his

  902. quiet times must

  903. be amazing,

  904. right?

  905. Okay God, I'm

  906. going to start

  907. praying, you can

  908. end because you

  909. like that part

  910. when you say in

  911. my name, okay you

  912. can do that but

  913. he's right beside

  914. God and he's

  915. praying with God

  916. and his

  917. relationship with

  918. God must have

  919. been out of

  920. control.

  921. He was the

  922. perfect man, he's

  923. the person that

  924. we, you and

  925. I try to

  926. become but the

  927. passage says that

  928. he was lonely, he

  929. needed something, he

  930. needed something that

  931. God couldn't give

  932. him.

  933. All the time I see

  934. people walking

  935. around and they

  936. say well all I

  937. need is God, me

  938. and God that's all

  939. I need?

  940. That's what the

  941. people thought 3,400

  942. years ago but Moses

  943. says no, you don't,

  944. you need God in a

  945. deep relationship with

  946. God but you need a

  947. deep, deep, deep

  948. relationship with

  949. people around you and

  950. if you don't have

  951. that, if you don't

  952. understand it, if you

  953. live your life and

  954. you just think I'm a

  955. me, I'm a me, I'm a

  956. me but God says no, we

  957. are an us, we're an

  958. us, we're an us and

  959. if you live your life

  960. trying to be a me

  961. instead of being an

  962. us, you're never

  963. going to be made what

  964. you're supposed to be

  965. made, you're never

  966. going to function the

  967. way you're supposed to

  968. function, you're never

  969. going to be used the

  970. way God wants you to

  971. use, you're never

  972. going to grow the way

  973. God wants you to

  974. grow and

  975. be like him. You're never going to know

  976. Jesus. You're never going to walk deeply

  977. with him if you're only just a

  978. me.

  979. Because from the very beginning, God

  980. creates and he creates us in

  981. us.

  982. And there's a deep, deep,

  983. deep need for community.

  984. There's a deep need for people to reflect

  985. back to us how we're really acting and what we're doing

  986. in our lives.

  987. It says that it was not good for man to be

  988. alone and so he makes a helper for him.

  989. And we could talk about this forever.

  990. And I really want to come back to this issue

  991. but the idea is this, that the man

  992. was in perfect relationship with God

  993. but he needed something else he was lacking.

  994. And so the Hebrew is easier.

  995. It means a person who

  996. has what he does not have.

  997. I know that there's a lot of terminology going

  998. on and people, women get angry

  999. when they're called helpers. But you know in the

1000. Bible it says there's only four people who are called

1001. helpers. It's called God our helper,

1002. Jesus our helper, the Holy Spirit our helper,

  1003. and woman our helper.

  1004. And there was something

1005. about man that woman needed to come in

1006. and fix. Actually in the Hebrew the word

1007. actually means, you're going to laugh, I use it

1008. sometimes in weddings and the guys go,

1009. but the word means rescuer.

  1010. That the woman

1011. is the rescuer of the man.

1012. That the woman has to be there to make

1013. the man complete. And let's just face it guys,

1014. women are so much better than us.

  1015. Aren't they?

  1016. Come on.

1017. I know I'm going to get in trouble

1018. on guys, but I'd rather get in trouble with the guys

1019. than with the girls, right?

  1020. But it's true, women

1021. are, because when he says

1022. this is bone to my bone, flesh to my flesh,

  1023. she completes me,

  1024. she's everything that I'm not.

1025. I'm not doing Jerry Maguire here, but she's everything

  1026. that I'm not.

1027. What Jesus is saying, what God is saying, what the Trinity

1028. is saying is that you have needs

1029. and you're lacking and I'm going to make you

1030. something that can fix you.

1031. And he doesn't clone him

1032. and he doesn't make him another man,

1033. but he makes him a woman.

  1034. Totally different.

1035. The Hebrew word actually means like but opposite

1036. because he needs that to come into that life

1037. and he needs that woman to come in there

1038. and to fix him and to rescue him

  1039. and to change him

1040. and to create a community.

  1041. So now they're a community

1042. and they're reflecting the image of God in community.

1043. They're us and us, man and woman.

1044. It's interesting when you do mathematics

1045. in God's world, it's always one plus one

1046. plus one plus one equals one.

1047. The Trinity, one plus one plus one equals one.

1048. Marriage, one plus one equals one.

1049. The 12 tribes, one plus one plus one equals one,

  1050. the people of God.

1051. The church, 350 equals one.

1052. And what God says is that you and I

1053. were meant to be in together with relationships

1054. and we need to be so close.

1055. We need to be so together

1056. that we've fused in community.

1057. And he's not just talking about sexually.

1058. It's so much deeper than sexually.

1059. The passage isn't just talking about physical intimacy,

1060. but it's talking about knowing people well

1061. and allowing them into your life.

1062. And let's face it, people in Hong Kong hate that.

  1063. Don't they?

1064. I mean, people wanna sit in the back

1065. and they just wanna run out.

1066. People don't want to go to things.

1067. They don't wanna sign up for things.

1068. They just say, hey, I don't wanna join things.

  1069. I'm too busy.

1070. Just give me a book.

1071. Give me a brief synopsis and I'll do that.

1072. Tell me what I need to sign.

1073. Maybe I'll send my helper to go do that.

1074. But I don't need to go do that.

1075. Let me just stay hidden.

  1076. Let me stay unknown.

1077. Let me stay in the back.

1078. And the passage says that you'll never grow.

  1079. You'll never meet God.

1080. You'll never come to Christ.

1081. You'll never be the person that God meant you to be

1082. unless you have people who are different

  1083. and they're around you.

  1084. Never.

  1085. You need people.

  1086. You need community.

1087. You need people to reflect around you.

1088. You need people to come alongside you.

1089. You need people to speak truth to you.

1090. You need people to say, no, you're being an idiot.

1091. When was the last time you had somebody in your life

1092. look at you and say, you're being an idiot?

1093. If it's been a long, long time,

1094. then you're not experiencing the biblical community

1095. that God meant for you to have.

1096. Because you need people who can care about you.

1097. You need people who can come alongside of you.

1098. You need people who are committed to your welfare

1099. and they want you to grow.

1100. I'm going to say something.

1101. I'm going to get in trouble, I know.

1102. My wife will talk to me later.

  1103. But the passage says,

1104. you need people that you can get naked with.

  1105. I mean, that's what it says.

1106. He's not talking about just sex.

1107. He's saying, you need people that you can allow to know you.

1108. You need people that can be transparent.

1109. He says at the end,

1110. the man and the wife were both naked

1111. and they were not ashamed.

1112. He's not just talking about physically,

1113. but he's talking about in so many other levels,

1114. spiritually, culturally, their heart, their mind.

1115. He says, you need somebody that you can allow into your life

1116. and that they can show you what's going on there.

1117. And most of us don't like that.

1118. Most of us don't want that.

1119. Most of us have this deep fear inside of ourselves

1120. that if I really let somebody in,

1121. if I really let somebody see me naked,

  1122. well, I won't say naked.

1123. If I really let somebody see me,

1124. because then they probably would run away.

1125. But if I really let somebody see who I really am,

  1126. they would run away.

1127. And maybe some of you in here have had that happen to you.

  1128. I have.

1129. Okay, I really like this person.

1130. I'm just going to open it up.

1131. I'm going to share my deepest, darkest struggles.

  1132. And they're like, whoa!

1133. Yeah, pastors not think about those things

1134. or have sinned or pastors are supposed to be perfect.

1135. At least I want my pastor to be perfect.

  1136. And they run away.

  1137. And in the passage,

1138. he says that you and I have a choice every day.

1139. Are we going to come into church?

1140. Are we going to come into communities and wear a mask

1141. and allow people to love us for what we're really not like?

1142. So most of us have people loving us for an image

1143. of what we want to be like,

1144. but we're not really that thing.

  1145. Does that make sense?

1146. Most of us have people love us for things

1147. that we're not really like.

1148. We're just an image of something we're projecting.

1149. But we're really not that thing.

1150. And the passage here says,

1151. unless you have people in your life

1152. who can come alongside of you

1153. and they can hear you

1154. and they can be in communion with you,

1155. unless you have that happen,

1156. then you're never going to be who Jesus wants you to be.

1157. You're never going to be what God meant for you to be.

1158. You're never going to reach your full potential.

1159. You're never going to be known.

  1160. So the question is,

1161. do you have somebody in your life like that?

  1162. Not just your spouse,

1163. but a group of people.

1164. Do you have a group of people who really know you?

  1165. They know you naked.

1166. They know your worst things

  1167. and they love you

1168. and they're committed to you

1169. and they care for you.

1170. Genesis says that when God created the woman

  1171. in that relationship,

1172. that was the type of relationship it was.

1173. But the problem is that what I see

1174. in most of my marriage counseling today

1175. is husbands and wives don't even know each other

1176. because they're so afraid of showing each other

1177. what's really going on in their heart.

1178. Singles really don't know each other.

  1179. They hang out,

1180. they clump out in community groups,

  1181. they do things together.

  1182. But when there's a struggle,

  1183. when there's a doubt,

  1184. when there's a fear,

  1185. when they're facing cancer,

1186. when something's going on in their life,

1187. when something deep down inside,

  1188. there's this aching knowledge.

1189. And I know it because I was single for 35 years.

  1190. There's this aching knowledge

1191. that if I really let them know,

1192. if I really share this,

1193. they're not going to accept me.

1194. And I might act weird

1195. every time I walk around them.

1196. In the past, he says,

1197. what would it be like if we were a church

1198. that when people came in,

  1199. they were cared for

  1200. and they were loved

1201. and they didn't have to put on a mask

1202. and they didn't have to wear something

1203. and they didn't have to act a certain way.

1204. What would it look like

1205. if we could be a church

1206. that could heal people of that

1207. and change people like that?

1208. What would it be like

1209. if we were not a church that was just a me,

1210. but we were a church that was a us

  1211. and in this us,

  1212. we reflected God's relationship

  1213. and his community

1214. and people who came in

  1215. and saw the love,

  1216. the acceptance,

1217. the care that we had for each other.

1218. Would that be an attractive church?

  1219. Would that be something

1220. that you would invite your friends to?

1221. I mean, I think that's some of the reasons

1222. some of us come here.

1223. Because it's amazing to me

1224. what I hear going on in community groups,

1225. but I think it's just not enough

1226. to have it in one community group.

1227. We need to be doing that as a church together.

  1228. Father,

1229. we were made for community.

1230. Until we're involved in each other's lives

1231. and talking truth to each other,

1232. we'll never be the people

1233. God meant for us to be.

1234. I'm going to end here.

1235. If you're sitting there like me,

  1236. when I wrote this,

1237. and for many, many years,

1238. I realized this just sounds too good.

  1239. The Christians say that,

1240. but they're really just hypocrites.

  1241. They say these things,

1242. they want to get known,

1243. but once they share these things,

  1244. it's impossible,

  1245. it's unrealistic,

  1246. it's not possible,

  1247. it will never happen.

  1248. And the passage says,

  1249. you're right.

  1250. On our own,

  1251. it is impossible.

1252. The only way that's going to happen

1253. is if Jesus shows up.

1254. The only way it's going to happen

1255. is we start to look at Christ,

1256. the only perfect image of God.

1257. He was the only man

1258. who was the perfect image of God.

  1259. He came to earth

1260. as a perfect image of God.

1261. He left the perfect community.

1262. And our Bible tells us

  1263. that he was scorned,

  1264. he was rejected,

1265. just like many of us feel like

  1266. in relationships.

  1267. He was cast aside.

  1268. He was crucified.

1269. It's very interesting in Colossians,

  1270. it says,

1271. for the joy set before him,

  1272. Christ endured the cross.

1273. It's the same words in Genesis.

1274. The Father and Son are creating,

1275. the Holy Spirit are creating,

1276. and there's a sense of overwhelming joy

  1277. and care and love

1278. and they want to share it with everybody

  1279. and so they create

1280. so that people can see it,

  1281. they can reflect it,

  1282. they can experience it

1283. and the relationship is broken

  1284. and it says,

  1285. Jesus comes down

1286. and he's the perfect man,

1287. he leads all these things

  1288. and it says,

1289. in the same way that he had joy

  1290. in creating us

  1291. in the very beginning,

  1292. he has joy

  1293. in dying for us

1294. so that we might come back

  1295. to the Father.

1296. And until we understand that,

1297. until Jesus shows up in your life

  1298. and you realize everything

  1299. that he's done,

1300. you're never going to be the person

1301. God meant for you to be.

  1302. You never will.

1303. Your mirror will be focusing

  1304. on HSBC or Jaguar

1305. or whatever it is in your life

1306. that brings meaning and purpose.

  1307. But the passage here

1308. is that God created us

1309. with a very special purpose

1310. and we as God's people

  1311. need to understand that

1312. if we're going to walk

  1313. and be the people

1314. that he wants us to be.

  1315. Does that make sense?

  1316. I've been struggling

1317. with that for 40 years.

  1318. I think I'll continue

1319. struggling with it all my life.

1320. The amazing thing about that

  1321. is as I do,

  1322. God is faithful.

  1323. His grace is amazing.

  1324. He continually meets me

  1325. wherever I'm at.

1326. Helps me point my mirror

  1327. back to Christ.

  1328. Become more and more

  1329. like the person

1330. he meant for us to be.

  1331. Father, we thank you

  1332. for this day.

1333. We thank you for your goodness

  1334. in our life.

  1335. I pray now

  1336. as I know

1337. that there are people here

  1338. who, man,

  1339. their mirror is focused

  1340. on anything but God.

1341. Some of them know that

  1342. and they think

  1343. that those things

  1344. will bring them happiness

  1345. and meaning

  1346. and significance

  1347. and some of them

  1348. have no idea

1349. and what I pray for those

  1350. my brothers and sisters

  1351. in here right now

1352. that you would show them

1353. in some way this week

  1354. that the only thing

1355. that's going to bring them meaning

  1356. the only thing

1357. that's going to bring them purpose

  1358. the only thing

1359. that's going to make them

1360. be what you created them

  1361. to be

1362. is a relationship with you

1363. and you're ready for that.

  1364. You're pursuing them.

1365. If they're here right now

  1366. it's very clear

  1367. your word says

  1368. that you're pursuing them

  1369. and the question is

1370. do they accept that pursuit

  1371. or do they hide

  1372. and reorient their mirror

1373. and I pray that they would

1374. fall in love with you.

  1375. For those of us

  1376. who are your children

  1377. and we're struggling

  1378. in this way

1379. as we walk with you

  1380. and we make mistakes

1381. and our mirror is broken

  1382. and we're trying

  1383. to capture something

  1384. that brings meaning

  1385. and purpose

  1386. and happiness

  1387. and sometimes

  1388. we capture things

  1389. and they bring happiness

1390. but they only bring it

  1391. for a little while

1392. and then we're empty again

1393. and yet you're continually there

  1394. you're continually drawing us

  1395. back to you

  1396. you're continually

  1397. loving us

1398. and showing us your son

  1399. you're continually showing

  1400. the us

  1401. in the Trinity

  1402. as opposed to me

  1403. as Tobin

  1404. and Lord

  1405. I pray for us

  1406. that we would

  1407. be people

  1408. who would just come

  1409. before you right now

1410. and we would just confess

  1411. we would just repent

  1412. of our selfishness

  1413. and our blindness

1414. and as your word says

1415. that many of us in here

1416. we're blind to our blindness

1417. we're blind to how blind we are

  1418. and the only way

  1419. we can see you

1420. is for you to open our eyes

  1421. so Lord

  1422. we're so thankful

1423. that we're made in your image

1424. and that the price tag

1425. on every one of us in here

  1426. and every person

  1427. that I name

  1428. the price tag

  1429. is priceless

  1430. because we're priceless

  1431. to you

1432. you continue to pursue us

  1433. and love us

  1434. and Lord

  1435. I pray for us

  1436. as a church

  1437. that we would be

  1438. all those things

  1439. that we talked about

1440. that we would be loving

  1441. and caring

1442. that we would treat people

  1443. with value and dignity

1444. as we go out today

1445. and we would treat people

  1446. with value and dignity

1447. as they come to church

1448. and that we would show them

  1449. what true community is

1450. and we would show them

1451. they don't have to be false

1452. or to wear a mask

  1453. but that we

  1454. we accept

  1455. and we love

  1456. and we care

1457. not because we can do it

  1458. because we can't

1459. but we do all these things

  1460. because you've done it

1461. and as we orient our mirrors

  1462. towards you

  1463. you change us

1464. and you give us the power

  1465. to be your people

  1466. and for that

  1467. we

  1468. we worship you

  1469. and we're

  1470. forever

  1471. we will never

  1472. yeah

  1473. amazing grace

  1474. so Lord

  1475. we come before you

  1476. and we love you

  1477. and we thank you

1478. and we pray these things

1479. in your son Jesus name

  1480. Amen
