  1. The scripture reading today comes from the book of Exodus and the Gospel of Mark.

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. In Exodus we read,

  4. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  5. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,

  6. but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God.

  7. In it you shall not do any work,

  8. you or your son or your daughter,

  9. your male or your female servant,

  10. or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.

  11. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,

  12. the sea and all that is in them,

  13. and rested on the seventh day.

  14. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  15. In Mark we read,

  16. And it happened that he was passing through the grain fields on the Sabbath,

  17. and his disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grains.

  18. The Pharisees were saying to him,

  19. Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?

  20. And he said to them,

  21. Have you never read what David did when he was in need,

  22. and he and his companion became hungry?

  23. How he entered the house of God in a time of Apathah,

  24. the high priest,

  25. and ate the consecrated bread,

  26. which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests.

  27. And he also gave it to those who were with him.

  28. Jesus said to them,

  29. The Sabbath was made for man,

  30. and not man for the Sabbath.

  31. So the Son of Man is Lord even over the Sabbath.

  32. Mark 3.

  33. He entered again into the synagogue,

  34. and a man was there whose hand was withered.

  35. They were watching him to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath,

  36. so that they might accuse him.

  37. He said to the man with the withered hand,

  38. Get up and come forward.

  39. And he said to them,

  40. Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath,

  41. to save a life or to kill?

  42. But they kept silent.

  43. After looking around at them with anger,

  44. grieved at their hardness of heart,

  45. he said to the man,

  46. Stretch out your hand.

  47. And he stretched it out,

  48. and his hand was restored.

  49. The Pharisees went out,

  50. and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against him,

  51. as to how they might destroy him.

  52. This is the reading of the Lord's Word.

  53. I think I'm on.

  54. Okay, good.

  55. Wow.

  56. That was amazing and beautiful.

  57. Thanks, guys, for leading us to worship the Lord this morning.

  58. Let's see who's on vacation already,

  59. and who's preparing to go on vacation,

  60. who's visiting,

  61. because they're on vacation.

  62. If you're here for the first time,

  63. or haven't been back in a while,

  64. my name is Tobin Miller.

  65. I'm one of the pastors here,

  66. and we've been doing a sermon series on the gospel and work.

  67. How does being a Christian,

  68. or how should being a Christian,

  69. affect how we do our work?

  70. What does it look like?

  71. Should we work differently after we come to a relationship with the Lord,

  72. or do we stay the same?

  73. So we've done two sermons so far with some testimonies,

  74. and today's the third.

  75. And just to kind of catch you up to speed,

  76. what we've talked about so far is we've said that in work,

  77. we looked at Genesis and the book of Ephesians,

  78. we've said that we all tend to suffer compartmentalization.

  79. So we've said that we all have this internal mechanism within us

  80. that we compartmentalize our lives.

  81. We have the office,

  82. we have the home,

  83. we have family and friends.

  84. And the problem with that is that often we ask different questions in those compartments.

  85. At home, we might ask or tell our kids,

  86. is that the right thing to do when they beat up their brother or sister?

  87. That never happens in my home, but it could happen in your home.

  88. We ask that question, is that right?

  89. But at work, we might ask the question, is it legal?

  90. In other situations, we might ask other different types of questions.

  91. And the problem is that we become confused,

  92. and we don't know what questions to ask,

  93. and what are the answers that guide our life?

  94. Just recently, a lot of the students in several high schools in Hong Kong

  95. were kicked out because they were smoking marijuana.

  96. And there's a big interview in a newspaper, I think last week,

  97. talking about what the school should have done.

  98. There's several of the schools that are having this trouble.

  99. And as they're interviewing some of the students,

  100. the students had some confusion because their response was,

  101. I don't understand why it's wrong for me to smoke pot here in Hong Kong,

  102. whereas in my home state of California, it's totally legal.

  103. I can do that.

  104. And so there was this confusion of what is right and what is good

  105. and what is should and what is truthful.

  106. And we all struggle with that.

  107. We said that God created us to work, and our work brings glory to God.

  108. We said that work is a noble thing.

  109. No matter how we feel, sometimes we feel like work is just,

  110. I just want to get through this so I can do what I really want to do.

  111. But the scripture says that work is noble, and God created us for this.

  112. We learned that our primary relationship is our relationship with God,

  113. and that relationship with God should govern how we interact

  114. in all the compartments of life, at home, at work, with our family.

  115. That relationship with the Lord guides us, it drives us,

  116. and it anchors us into reality.

  117. We talked about no matter where we work, our ultimate boss is God.

  118. We talked about how sometimes we have this temptation not to come into work

  119. until our boss is there, and I know you never struggle with this,

  120. and not to leave until your boss leaves.

  121. But we talked about how Ephesians said that our ultimate boss is God,

  122. and he sees everything.

  123. He sees the things that we do, and he sees the things that we don't do.

  124. We learned that we're not to worry about our future,

  125. because if God is our ultimate boss, he will take care of us.

  126. We might not receive that pay raise we expect.

  127. We might not receive those promotions, but God sees all, and he takes care of us,

  128. and in the end, as we walk with him, he will watch us and guide us.

  129. We learned that the garden, our world, our workplace is broken

  130. and filled with weeds and thorns and thistles,

  131. and all this comes from a broken relationship between us and our creator.

  132. The Bible calls this sin.

  133. We don't like to talk about sin often, but the Bible talks about it a lot,

  134. and it's something that happens because our relationship with God is broken,

  135. and because of that, our world has fallen.

  136. We talked about in God's kingdom, our work, our calling, our ministry,

  137. are all the same thing.

  138. We ask sometimes, what is your ministry at work?

  139. And some people will say, well, I lead a Bible study, or I pray for people,

  140. or I lead people, or I listen to them, or I talk to them.

  141. But the scripture says that our work is our primary ministry,

  142. and everything that we do in our work reflects on God and glorifies him.

  143. Sometimes, if you're honest, we tend to separate.

  144. This is the secular, and this is the sacred,

  145. and we live in the secular Monday through Saturday,

  146. and we live in the sacred on Sunday.

  147. But the Bible says that everything is sacred,

  148. and that God is with us at all times,

  149. and he's guiding us.

  150. And the last thing that we learn is the only way that we can fix the brokenness,

  151. the only way that we can come out of the thorns and the thistles,

  152. the only way that we can deal with the weeds in our life and in our workplaces

  153. by fixing our relationship with our creator, God.

  154. No matter what we try, no matter how we fix things or try to do things,

  155. and there's books and books and books written on it,

  156. that nothing's going to happen until we fix our relationship with God.

  157. It was 1972.

  158. I don't know how many people weren't alive then.

  159. But in 1972, my family was moving from Trenton, New Jersey,

  160. McGuire Air Force Base, to Montgomery, Alabama,

  161. Maxwell Air Force Base, where my dad was going to attend a war college there.

  162. We didn't know anything about the South.

  163. We had all these questions because we watched Huckleberry Finn,

  164. and we wondered if people actually wore shoes in the South.

  165. And I'm here to tell you that in 1972, about half did and half didn't.

  166. Okay?

  167. It's true.

  168. And we got there, and it was a very interesting experience for us

  169. because my family were not churchgoers.

  170. And I remember the first Sunday, we woke up, and we slept in as we always did,

  171. and we said, let's go get something to eat.

  172. And we started driving around town,

  173. and all the restaurants were closed.

  174. I mean, everything was closed.

  175. The only thing that had cars parked outside of it was churches.

  176. And we didn't go to church.

  177. We just wanted food.

  178. And so we drove it around, and we drove around,

  179. and we ended up coming home because we couldn't find a place

  180. that was open for us to eat.

  181. It's called the Blue Laws in the South.

  182. And some of them still exist, like selling alcohol on certain days

  183. or things like that.

  184. But there were these ideas that we want to keep this thing holy and sacred.

  185. And we didn't know that because we weren't churchgoers.

  186. We didn't know what holy or sacred or church was all about.

  187. We just knew that we couldn't eat dinner that night

  188. because everything was shut down.

  189. It was crazy.

  190. I remember asking a friend of mine, his dad later, his name was Andy.

  191. I said, what's going on here?

  192. And his reply is, and you can't repeat this

  193. because back then I was called Toby instead of Tobin.

  194. He said, Toby, people are just too busy in Montgomery.

  195. People need to learn how to rest.

  196. People need perspective.

  197. And I've thought about that a lot.

  198. People need to learn how to rest.

  199. People need perspective.

  200. We're going to look at a passage today.

  201. It's in the Gospel of Mark, but it's actually in Luke and Matthew also.

  202. And it's a story of Jesus coming against the religious leaders,

  203. and he's going to talk to them about rest.

  204. He's going to talk to them about work.

  205. He's going to talk to them about perspective.

  206. In the Jewish culture, it's called the Sabbath.

  207. I know it's something alien to us in Hong Kong

  208. because we pride ourselves in busyness and working hard.

  209. I was talking to a guy this week, and he says,

  210. what are we going to preach on this Sunday?

  211. I'm like, we're going to preach on rest.

  212. He's like, ha, ha, ha, good luck with that.

  213. I was like, yeah, you're right.

  214. And I struggle with even sharing this

  215. because I realize that often I'm a much better communicator of it

  216. than a practicer of it, especially as a pastor.

  217. Because what I found out is pastors become very, very busy,

  218. especially on Sabbaths.

  219. People are very busy, and they need to rest.

  220. They need perspective.

  221. What do you think about that?

  222. I've thought about that some, and I realize that in my own life,

  223. and this is a sermon towards Tobin,

  224. so if you hear me say we or us, it's actually me.

  225. It seems like we just get busier and busier in Hong Kong.

  226. Life is busier and busier,

  227. and I challenge you this week to ask somebody how they're doing

  228. and write out how many times they don't say I'm busy.

  229. And I challenge you this week, if someone asks you,

  230. how are you doing?

  231. Not to say in some form or fashion that you're busy,

  232. but it just seems like we're busy, busy, busy,

  233. and we all need rest, and we all need perspective.

  234. And it seems like technology hasn't helped at all.

  235. I got this new, I got my Apple smartphone,

  236. and I felt like it's going to help me slow down.

  237. It's going to help me get perspective.

  238. It's going to help me organize my life,

  239. and it hasn't helped at all.

  240. I mean, I'm on the date night, Thursday night,

  241. and guys, this is not a good thing to do, okay?

  242. Christina and I are talking.

  243. I'm trying to pay attention to her.

  244. We're focusing.

  245. We're having this talking about feelings and emotion.

  246. She's using her 20,000 words for the day,

  247. and I'm trying to use my 500 words for the day.

  248. And she mentions something that strikes this spark in my head,

  249. and I go, oh, yeah, I forgot all about that.

  250. And I pull out my phone, and I start to do a text message.

  251. And she goes, what are you doing?

  252. And I'm like, I thought maybe the kids called.

  253. And I wanted to check and see if they called.

  254. I lied as a pastor.

  255. But I realized that my life is getting busier and busier,

  256. and that we're all getting busier and busier,

  257. and we're chasing after the wind.

  258. And guys, that is not a good thing to do on your date night, okay?

  259. And single guys, if you're dating a girl, put up your phone.

  260. Don't take it with you.

  261. Just please don't do that.

  262. I was meeting with a friend this Friday.

  263. He's from another country, and we're talking about life.

  264. And I asked him how he was doing.

  265. He was in just for a couple days, and he said,

  266. things are crazy, and they're busy.

  267. And I think I'm going to get laid off at the end of this year

  268. because there's another massive round of layoffs coming in my industry.

  269. And I looked at him, and we started praying and talking about it.

  270. He goes, but you know, I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing

  271. because my family has been complaining about how busy I am,

  272. and I'm not spending enough time with them.

  273. But then if I don't get laid off, other people are going to get laid off,

  274. and then I'm going to have to do their job also,

  275. so I'm going to even be busier.

  276. So maybe it's a good thing that I get laid off

  277. because I'm just too busy.

  278. And you know, the Bible talks about that a lot.

  279. In the very beginning in your bulletin, we look at it in Exodus.

  280. It actually comes from Genesis.

  281. And it says in the very beginning that God creates everything.

  282. He creates everything in six days.

  283. And on this seventh day, he says this will be a day of rest.

  284. He establishes this work rhythm.

  285. Six days of work, one day of rest.

  286. It's called the Sabbath.

  287. It actually means to cease in Hebrew.

  288. It means to stop, to do nothing, to relax.

  289. And I thought about that passage because God's created it.

  290. That God finishes his creation, and God is God.

  291. He's not tired.

  292. He doesn't need to rest.

  293. He doesn't need to recharge his iPhone or his batteries.

  294. But for some reason in the Scripture,

  295. he lays down this day of rest for you and I as his creation.

  296. And he says, this is the day I want you to relax.

  297. This is the day I want you to recharge.

  298. This is the day that I've made just for you to enjoy me.

  299. This is the day I want you to have perspective.

  300. We read a little later on in Exodus passage,

  301. and it was printed for you in a bulletin,

  302. that God actually takes his Sabbath day,

  303. and he makes it a law.

  304. It's this gift that he gives to us.

  305. And it's not a gift that's supposed to be burdensome.

  306. It's this gift that's supposed to give us freedom,

  307. to give us a chance to relax,

  308. to give us a chance to break.

  309. It's a gift to help us biologically and psychologically

  310. and spiritually to rest.

  311. And so he puts it in his word,

  312. and the Jewish nation took this idea of Sabbath,

  313. and they ran with it.

  314. It was a huge part of the Jewish culture.

  315. I mean, if you go to Israel today,

  316. on Friday night at 6 o'clock, everything shuts down.

  317. And Saturday night at 6 o'clock, everything opens up again.

  318. And they prided themselves in the Sabbath,

  319. because for them, it was a covenant relationship

  320. between them and the creator of all things.

  321. The Jewish writers, from that time on,

  322. took this idea of Sabbath,

  323. and they started to write and to organize

  324. and to build upon it,

  325. to where it came to a place

  326. where the Sabbath was the most important thing

  327. in a Jewish culture.

  328. It was a thing that separated them

  329. apart from all the other nations in the world.

  330. No other nation had a day of rest.

  331. It was totally alien and totally strange,

  332. just like a person driving from New Jersey

  333. down to Alabama

  334. and experiencing a closed-out place.

  335. That would have been strange to them,

  336. and that was something that the Jewish people

  337. prided themselves in,

  338. because it meant they had a relationship.

  339. It meant that they had perspective with God.

  340. In Deuteronomy, we read later on

  341. that God actually says for the people

  342. in Deuteronomy 5,

  343. and I think it's printed in your bulletin,

  344. He says,

  345. I want you to practice this Sabbath

  346. because you need to remember

  347. that at one time you were a slave,

  348. and slaves got no rest.

  349. But as the people of God,

  350. I've given you a day of rest.

  351. Slaves have no rest,

  352. but the people of God

  353. have a rest.

  354. They have a perspective.

  355. One Jewish writer said it like this,

  356. and I thought this was encapsulated at all.

  357. He said that in the Sabbath,

  358. our greatest needs

  359. of rest,

  360. identity,

  361. self-worth,

  362. worship,

  363. security,

  364. are perfectly met.

  365. In the Sabbath,

  366. our greatest needs,

  367. our greatest needs of man,

  368. rest,

  369. identity,

  370. self-worth,

  371. worship,

  372. and security

  373. are perfectly met.

  374. But by the time of Jesus' day,

  375. they had taken this Sabbath,

  376. which was just this law,

  377. and they had added,

  378. and added,

  379. and added,

  380. and added,

  381. and added hundreds and hundreds

  382. of rules and regulations

  383. and things that should be good,

  384. and they divided work

  385. up into 39 different categories.

  386. So when Jesus came on the scene,

  387. it wasn't just a day of rest,

  388. but it was a day

  389. that you had to do,

  390. do,

  391. do,

  392. do,

  393. do,

  394. do,

  395. do,

  396. or you weren't actually resting.

  397. Some of the rules were like this.

  398. On the Sabbath,

  399. you cannot walk more than 3,000 feet.

  400. On the Sabbath,

  401. you cannot carry an object

  402. with any weight.

  403. Actually,

  404. the weight was this.

  405. This is a pine cone

  406. I picked up from the Garden of Gethsemane

  407. when we were on our Israel trip.

  408. And this is the size of the weight

  409. that you could carry on the Sabbath.

  410. That was it.

  411. Now,

  412. if you were walking with somebody

  413. and you got past your regulated time

  414. that you could walk,

  415. you could hand this off to them,

  416. and then they could carry it,

  417. and then they could hand it off to you.

  418. Now,

  419. you didn't have to do it backwards

  420. like in rugby,

  421. but you had to hand it off

  422. after a certain period of time.

  423. No one got that right.

  424. Rugby,

  425. you run forwards,

  426. you pass backwards.

  427. Anyway,

  428. I'll try it later.

  429. Anyway,

  430. but this was the weight

  431. that you could carry.

  432. You couldn't toss something

  433. into the air

  434. and catch it with the other hand.

  435. That was work.

  436. That was a bad thing.

  437. You couldn't do that.

  438. You couldn't light a fire

  439. or you couldn't put out a fire.

  440. Two trips ago,

  441. my birthday was on the Israel trip,

  442. and Christina was trying

  443. to throw a party for me

  444. and had this beautiful cake

  445. and all these candles,

  446. and we were going to have this party.

  447. We'd have an early party

  448. because everybody was going to go out,

  449. but it was on the Sabbath,

  450. and the guy says,

  451. here's your cake,

  452. here's your candles,

  453. but you can't light it.

  454. I go,

  455. what?

  456. He goes,

  457. you can't light it

  458. because that's work.

  459. Well,

  460. how are we going to do

  461. a birthday cake

  462. without lighting?

  463. He goes,

  464. what?

  465. 601.

  466. 601,

  467. you can light it

  468. because at 601,

  469. the work can be happening

  470. because the Sabbath is over.

  471. So my birthday party

  472. started at 601,

  473. May 14th,

  474. four years ago,

  475. but you couldn't do

  476. any work on that.

  477. A woman

  478. could not look in a mirror

  479. because she might see

  480. a gray hair

  481. and be tempted

  482. to pull it out.

  483. That would be work.

  484. Now,

  485. I know that wouldn't happen

  486. to any of the women

  487. in our church

  488. because there are no gray hair,

  489. it's just frosted hair,

  490. but you could not do that.

  491. You could not open a can

  492. except for a Diet Coke can

  493. because a Diet Coke can

  494. was seen as holy

  495. and righteous and good.

  496. So that was the only,

  497. I'm teasing,

  498. okay,

  499. but that was the only can

  500. you could open.

  501. In fact,

  502. he says that you couldn't

  503. even heal people

  504. if someone was sick

  505. and they were beat up,

  506. you could keep them alive,

  507. but you couldn't

  508. heal them at all.

  509. And so these Jewish writers

  510. put all these clarifications

  511. and they took this idea

  512. of a Sabbath,

  513. which was this amazing blessing.

  514. It was a day to rest

  515. and get perspective

  516. and they added

  517. all of these things on it

  518. and they basically

  519. turned this day

  520. of a blessing

  521. into a day

  522. of a curse.

  523. And so on Jesus' day,

  524. there was all these rules

  525. that you had to do

  526. and what their faith became

  527. was a religion

  528. based on works.

  529. You had to do these things

  530. to feel secure.

  531. You had to do these things

  532. to get your identity.

  533. You had to do these things

  534. to get your self-worth.

  535. All these things

  536. that the Sabbath

  537. was supposed to give us

  538. just as we rested

  539. and reflected on God,

  540. now they said

  541. that was not enough.

  542. You had to do,

  543. you had to do,

  544. you had to do,

  545. you had to perform,

  546. you had to be better

  547. than everybody else,

  548. you had to be better

  549. than those people around you,

  550. you had to keep the law

  551. more perfectly,

  552. and if you did that,

  553. God would be pleased.

  554. Does that sound good?

  555. So you know

  556. what's gonna happen

  557. because Jesus

  558. is gonna come in here

  559. and Jesus is gonna say

  560. to them what he sees

  561. right away,

  562. he says you guys

  563. are adding all these rules

  564. and laws on all these people

  565. but the problem is

  566. you don't even do them

  567. for yourself.

  568. You just make them do them

  569. but you don't take them

  570. on yourself

  571. and so Jesus comes

  572. with his disciples

  573. and they go after him

  574. in this series of passages

  575. and they try to change him,

  576. they try to take grace

  577. in the gospel

  578. and turn it into works

  579. and you know

  580. what's gonna happen.

  581. It's not gonna be good.

  582. You know,

  583. one of the neat things

  584. about this sermon series

  585. as we've been talking

  586. is that we've been able

  587. to have businessmen

  588. come up and share

  589. some of their journeys

  590. and stories

  591. and so I've asked Simon Wong

  592. to come up.

  593. Simon, where are you?

  594. You're hiding.

  595. Simon almost ran away today

  596. because he came up

  597. and we said,

  598. we're gonna do the interview

  599. and I said, yeah

  600. and he goes,

  601. did you get my questions?

  602. I said, no

  603. and he said,

  604. are the same questions

  605. you're gonna ask me?

  606. I said, I forgot

  607. what those questions were

  608. and we're just gonna go by ear

  609. and so he's pretty nervous here

  610. so Simon,

  611. thank you for coming up

  612. and you know,

  613. Simon, one of the things,

  614. Simon's in our community group

  615. his wife Sherman

  616. helps do the youth ministry,

  617. children's ministry

  618. and I just appreciate your,

  619. I just appreciate your transparency

  620. and your honesty, right?

  621. And as you walk,

  622. it's been neat to see that

  623. and so is it cracking

  624. or you don't have to,

  625. you can do it if you want.

  626. I'll be like Oprah

  627. but I'll stand up

  628. because I'm the skinny Oprah.

  629. Okay,

  630. so Simon,

  631. maybe you just share

  632. with us a little bit

  633. about just your story,

  634. where you're at

  635. in this journey

  636. of work and experiences.

  637. Just a little bit background,

  638. my name is Simon,

  639. I work in IT industry

  640. long times ago,

  641. around 20 years ago.

  642. At that time,

  643. you know,

  644. computer technology,

  645. there's no,

  646. so everything is in English,

  647. right?

  648. You are not able

  649. to see the internet page

  650. in Chinese,

  651. in Japanese,

  652. in all these

  653. other different languages.

  654. So,

  655. so I work in the Silicon Valley

  656. to actually,

  657. to,

  658. to build technology

  659. to represent those languages.

  660. So right now,

  661. you are seeing smartphone,

  662. you are seeing the internet

  663. with those languages.

  664. I'm so proud

  665. to be part of that,

  666. right?

  667. So,

  668. and,

  669. no.

  670. So as Bernard said,

  671. three,

  672. three weeks ago,

  673. you kind of took the garden,

  674. and you took all the loose pieces,

  675. and you're trying to

  676. interconnect and telecommunicate

  677. throughout the garden,

  678. right?

  679. And so now you're,

  680. he set up the framework,

  681. and now you're giving us

  682. the language to do that in,

  683. right?

  684. Yes.

  685. Okay, okay, okay.

  686. So,

  687. in 2004,

  688. I think

  689. God has put in my,

  690. in my heart

  691. a burden

  692. to work with people

  693. rather than technology.

  694. So I start to

  695. think about,

  696. you know,

  697. how are we going to

  698. witness to Christ

  699. in work?

  700. How are we going to

  701. deal with people?

  702. And then,

  703. I decided to come back

  704. to Hong Kong

  705. to work on a

  706. totally different career,

  707. which is,

  708. a lot of people

  709. don't like it,

  710. is sales.

  711. So I transform myself

  712. from an engineer

  713. to a sales,

  714. selling big software

  715. to company

  716. like AT&T.

  717. But now we should

  718. sit down

  719. and talk about business.

  720. And,

  721. basically,

  722. trying to enable,

  723. you know,

  724. IT infrastructure

  725. for mobile phone,

  726. smartphone,

  727. right,

  728. your iPhone apps,

  729. things like that.

  730. It's very interesting.

  731. But a sales career

  732. is very different

  733. from an engineering career.

  734. So,

  735. God taught me

  736. a lot of things

  737. during that journey.

  738. I think God

  739. is still teaching me

  740. right now.

  741. Yeah.

  742. So you're married

  743. and you have two kiddos,

  744. right,

  745. and they're here.

  746. So as you've

  747. been on this journey

  748. and changing

  749. from career to career

  750. and jobs

  751. and things like that,

  752. what would you say

  753. as we talk about

  754. the brokenness

  755. and the thorns

  756. and the thistles

  757. and just

  758. we live in a cursed

  759. work environment

  760. and everything else

  761. and we're here

  762. to redeem that,

  763. what would you say,

  764. how has that affected you?

  765. Right now,

  766. I manage a team

  767. of around

  768. 40 people,

  769. 30 people.

  770. So I talk

  771. to a lot of people,

  772. a lot of our colleagues,

  773. a lot of our business partners,

  774. a lot of our customers.

  775. My view on the brokenness

  776. is that everybody thinks

  777. that they are not

  778. paid as they should

  779. or they should be paid.

  780. They're always looking

  781. higher than what

  782. they are.

  783. So this is generally

  784. across the board,

  785. right.

  786. So I think

  787. this is kind of

  788. the brokenness

  789. that I'm part of.

  790. I'm also looking

  791. myself as higher

  792. than what I am

  793. and I'm also

  794. trying to ask

  795. for the salary,

  796. the promotion

  797. that I think

  798. I deserve.

  799. So that is

  800. the brokenness

  801. that I'm seeing.

  802. That's good.

  803. That's good.

  804. So in the midst

  805. of that brokenness,

  806. would you ever say

  807. or how would you say

  808. you are tempted

  809. to compartmentalize

  810. and live by

  811. different sets of rules

  812. in different areas?

  813. Has that been a struggle

  814. for you in that sense?

  815. Of course.

  816. So I think

  817. a few years back,

  818. just a short story,

  819. I don't want to make it

  820. a sermon.

  821. You're probably

  822. better than I am

  823. so that's okay.

  824. They're not going

  825. to remember

  826. anything I said,

  827. they're going to

  828. remember everything

  829. you said

  830. so it's okay.

  831. So I don't know

  832. if you ever

  833. pay for a promotion

  834. or a salary increment.

  835. Have you ever

  836. paid?

  837. Okay,

  838. so I'm not alone.

  839. So four years ago

  840. I actually feel

  841. that in two years

  842. I was not paid

  843. as I should be paid.

  844. I'm not recognized

  845. as a person

  846. in the organization

  847. based on the contribution

  848. that I have.

  849. So I'm sure

  850. that a lot of people

  851. actually think that way.

  852. So I go to the Lord,

  853. I decided that I set aside

  854. a date of fasting prayer

  855. to pray for promotion.

  856. We're going to have

  857. a special class on that

  858. right after this,

  859. okay?

  860. So it's, yeah.

  861. This is not biblical,

  862. right?

  863. But it was my theology

  864. at that time.

  865. So I sit down

  866. and start the fasting day

  867. and the first thing

  868. I bow down and pray

  869. and God is telling me

  870. that you are praying

  871. the wrong thing.

  872. Right?

  873. You are praying

  874. for your glory.

  875. You are praying

  876. for your approval

  877. in your work.

  878. You are praying

  879. for basically

  880. your identity

  881. with your peer groups.

  882. So that fasting prayer

  883. of promotion

  884. become a prayer

  885. of repentance.

  886. so that is

  887. a very good exercise

  888. because it geared

  889. myself toward

  890. a working attitude

  891. to serve God

  892. rather than serve myself.

  893. And this is not

  894. a head knowledge.

  895. I have been,

  896. had that knowledge

  897. for a long, long time

  898. that I need to serve God

  899. in the working place.

  900. But having a head knowledge

  901. and actually doing it

  902. is very different.

  903. That's what I'm trying

  904. to share.

  905. So I think

  906. in that instance

  907. I never pray for any,

  908. I don't feel like

  909. I want to pray

  910. for a promotion anymore.

  911. Because God has changed

  912. my heart

  913. that I should pray

  914. for the things

  915. that He cares.

  916. So I'm just going

  917. to break some confidence

  918. but in our community group

  919. we pray a lot about,

  920. if you're not in a community group

  921. you need to get in a community group

  922. because for us

  923. it's where

  924. life on life happenings

  925. and just people talking

  926. and getting to know

  927. in a lot.

  928. So we've been praying

  929. in your community group

  930. about a month ago, right?

  931. You had this

  932. really difficult situation

  933. coming up

  934. where you were going

  935. to have to let off people.

  936. And your company

  937. basically said

  938. cut off 30% of everybody.

  939. And we prayed for that

  940. for like at least a month

  941. and we've talked

  942. and the guys got together

  943. and talked.

  944. And can you just share

  945. what that looked like

  946. for you as you were praying

  947. as a follower of Christ

  948. in the workplace?

  949. And I think I appreciate

  950. one of the sacrifices

  951. you were willing to make

  952. if you want to share that

  953. what you said

  954. because I've never heard

  955. anybody else say that before.

  956. I think it was,

  957. to me it was just an example

  958. of God working in your heart.

  959. So as I said

  960. I manage a group

  961. of 30 people

  962. and I was asked

  963. to lay off 30%

  964. of my workforce

  965. maybe two to three months ago

  966. because the business

  967. is not doing good

  968. and we need to downsize.

  969. So first time

  970. I heard about this

  971. 30%

  972. I don't know how

  973. I can do this.

  974. I look at all the peoples

  975. that are reporting to me

  976. and they have families

  977. they have mortgages

  978. across Asia Pacific

  979. in different countries

  980. with different cultures.

  981. Different people look

  982. at these things differently.

  983. So I think

  984. the pressure on me

  985. is that

  986. how are we going

  987. to do this?

  988. How are we going

  989. to execute this?

  990. Another complexity

  991. is that the headquarter

  992. actually assigned

  993. executive management

  994. team

  995. or executive

  996. to actually come

  997. and monitor us

  998. as part of the restructure.

  999. So I was being asked

  1000. to identify

  1001. who are being redundant

  1002. and being let go

  1003. will be let go

  1004. and basically

  1005. I have a very burdened heart

1006. and I share with Tobin

  1007. community groups

  1008. Chris

  1009. we pray about that

  1010. and graciously

1011. God give me a peace

  1012. that I have never

  1013. experienced before

1014. so I have the peace

  1015. that I can handle

  1016. these things.

  1017. I'm not saying

  1018. that the issue

  1019. was resolved

  1020. I'm just saying

1021. that God is with me.

  1022. So all along

  1023. the process

  1024. I think

  1025. the challenge

  1026. that I see

  1027. at one moment

  1028. moment is that

  1029. when we actually

  1030. identify the list

  1031. of candidates

  1032. to be let go

  1033. one of them

  1034. actually is myself.

  1035. So I find that

1036. I am part of the redundancy

1037. if I'm true to myself

  1038. because this executive

  1039. is coming

  1040. to take my place.

  1041. So in that context

  1042. I struggle

  1043. right?

  1044. Evil force

  1045. human nature

  1046. is asking me

  1047. okay you can

  1048. take one

  1049. as a scapegoat

  1050. put it into

  1051. the candidate list

  1052. and you can free

1053. and you have the job

  1054. you know

  1055. you're okay.

  1056. So I think

  1057. I quickly realized

  1058. that this is not

1059. a good thing to do.

  1060. I quickly realized

  1061. that this is not

  1062. the thing

  1063. that I can

  1064. glorify God

  1065. actually

  1066. it's disgrace

  1067. because I

  1068. use the authority

1069. that God has given me

  1070. to do it

  1071. to my benefit

  1072. which is not

  1073. it's not a justice

  1074. it's not a justice

  1075. that God wants

  1076. to do

  1077. at the working place.

  1078. So in the end

  1079. I just very open

  1080. to give the list

  1081. to my boss

1082. with my name on it

  1083. saying that

  1084. okay this is

1085. if you want to do it

  1086. this is the list

  1087. including myself

  1088. and I was a little bit

  1089. very

  1090. a little bit excited

  1091. actually

  1092. because I went down

  1093. to the HR department

  1094. and asked for

  1095. what kind of package

  1096. I get

  1097. and because I worked

  1098. in the company

  1099. for 17 years

  1100. and the HR

  1101. is telling me

  1102. that you get

  1103. one month of salary

  1104. out of each year

  1105. of service

  1106. so I have 17 month

  1107. salaries

  1108. and I have

  1109. big Sabbath

  1110. so I was

  1111. a little bit excited

  1112. and then later

  1113. they told me

  1114. that there's a cap

  1115. of three month salary

  1116. so if you work

  1117. for his company

1118. you work for three months

  1119. and quit

  1120. right

  1121. so

  1122. so I hope

  1123. that this is a

  1124. protect environment

1125. that when I share things

  1126. don't really

  1127. you know

  1128. tell other people

  1129. probably

1130. so this is company policy

  1131. so in the end

  1132. a miracle happen

  1133. is that the executive

  1134. which the headquarters

  1135. sent

  1136. eventually

  1137. he doesn't want

  1138. to join us

  1139. so my boss

  1140. is basically

  1141. okay

  1142. so if this guy

  1143. is not joining us

  1144. so you will be

  1145. resuming your normal duty

1146. as a head of organization

  1147. that was the outcome

  1148. okay

  1149. a physical outcome

  1150. but the actual

  1151. spiritual outcome

  1152. I see

  1153. is that

  1154. my boss

  1155. is looking at me

  1156. very differently

  1157. right now

  1158. he's here

  1159. how do I manage

  1160. a guy who

  1161. doesn't care

  1162. to lose their job

  1163. right

  1164. so he

  1165. I think he's starting

  1166. not know how

  1167. to manage me

  1168. because

  1169. you know

  1170. if you

  1171. you can manage

  1172. people

  1173. you can

  1174. you know

  1175. give them a salary

  1176. and they

  1177. they work hard

  1178. but if you are

  1179. you don't care

  1180. about your job

  1181. your boss

  1182. don't know

  1183. how to manage you

  1184. so I think

  1185. I think

1186. this is a weird thing

  1187. but I think

  1188. you know

1189. Christian in the working place

  1190. sometimes is weird

  1191. and I think

  1192. it's a

  1193. it's a

  1194. it's a

  1195. glory to God

  1196. good

  1197. that's great

  1198. yeah

  1199. we're talking about

  1200. the Sabbath today

1201. and just what it means

  1202. to rest

1203. would you want to share

  1204. anything that God's been

  1205. teaching you in this

  1206. in your life

  1207. would just

  1208. besides getting 17 months

  1209. Sabbath free

  1210. things like that

  1211. there's something

1212. as you look at your work

  1213. how have you struggled

  1214. with being balanced

  1215. in keeping perspective

  1216. in your management

  1217. I think it's a very good

  1218. lesson learned for me

  1219. so I'm a work

  1220. you know

  1221. I work

  1222. long hours

  1223. and also

  1224. I care about how

1225. my boss look at me

  1226. I care about how

  1227. people look at me

  1228. and God has

  1229. been changing me

  1230. step by step

  1231. right

  1232. I'm not saying that

  1233. I

1234. I have done my work

  1235. I have

  1236. finished my duty

  1237. it's not that

  1238. it's a journey

  1239. that God has

  1240. really

  1241. coming to start

  1242. with me

  1243. so I think

  1244. in the past

  1245. when I

  1246. you know

  1247. you use

  1248. iPhone

  1249. you can set up

  1250. SMS alert

  1251. when you receive

  1252. an email

  1253. whose address

  1254. is your boss's address

  1255. so this is called

  1256. VIP list

  1257. so I set up

  1258. a VIP list

  1259. so every time

  1260. my boss

  1261. send me an email

  1262. I get an SMS

  1263. notification

  1264. so that I can

  1265. immediately respond

  1266. so that you know

  1267. I really perform

  1268. but in the end

  1269. when I get to

  1270. a Sabbath day

1271. or a day of rest

  1272. I get a lot

  1273. of this SMS

  1274. so even if I

1275. go out with my kids

  1276. and you know

  1277. in a park

  1278. or whatever

  1279. I tend to

1280. go back to my iPhone

  1281. and read my email

1282. and try to do things

1283. that is not a good practice

  1284. so I think

  1285. especially on date night

  1286. exactly

  1287. so I think

  1288. the

  1289. so

1290. I try to stop that

  1291. and I try to

  1292. really trust the Lord

  1293. that even if

  1294. I'm not taking care

  1295. of those things

  1296. God will take care

  1297. of them

  1298. I need to put

  1299. that trust

  1300. human nature

  1301. is telling me

  1302. that I need to

  1303. handle all these things

  1304. but you know

  1305. heavenly thoughts

  1306. is giving me

  1307. the fact that

  1308. I need to rest

  1309. and really

  1310. you know

  1311. enjoy that

  1312. Sabbath day

  1313. together with

  1314. God and my family

  1315. I appreciate

  1316. when you

  1317. Simon and Sherman

  1318. just joined our group

  1319. recently

1320. and one of the first

  1321. things he came in

  1322. was he just said

1323. wow I got so many

  1324. things going on

  1325. in my life

  1326. I really need

  1327. a group of men

  1328. around me

  1329. to pray with me

  1330. and that I can

  1331. speak to

  1332. and bounce things off

  1333. to make sure

  1334. I'm not sounding

  1335. that I'm not losing

  1336. perspective

  1337. so I really appreciate

  1338. his urgency

  1339. in that

  1340. and I think

  1341. that that's

  1342. an encouragement

  1343. I think

  1344. I want to give

  1345. to all the men

  1346. and women

  1347. that we need

  1348. to have people

  1349. around us

  1350. where we

  1351. don't lose

  1352. perspective

  1353. if we're by

  1354. ourselves

  1355. in that sense

  1356. I want to pray

  1357. for you

  1358. and Sherman

  1359. and their

  1360. two kiddos

  1361. and just thank you

  1362. so much

  1363. Father thank you

  1364. for Simon

  1365. and I pray

  1366. for him

  1367. Lord

  1368. I pray

  1369. that you

  1370. would be

  1371. upon him

  1372. that he

  1373. would continue

  1374. to work

  1375. in a manner

  1376. that is

  1377. showing everyone

  1378. the primary

  1379. relationship

  1380. he has

  1381. is his

  1382. relationship

  1383. with you

  1384. I pray

  1385. for perspective

  1386. and wisdom

  1387. as he walks

  1388. with you

  1389. and leads

  1390. others

  1391. pray for perspective

  1392. and wisdom

  1393. and mercy

  1394. as he walks

  1395. with his wife

  1396. and kids

  1397. and leads them

  1398. in the midst

  1399. of all this

  1400. Lord

  1401. we are so thankful

  1402. that you don't

  1403. give up on us

  1404. that you continue

  1405. to pursue us

  1406. and even when

  1407. we make mistakes

  1408. your mercy

  1409. and your grace

  1410. just

  1411. you're the God

  1412. of second chances

  1413. and third chances

1414. and we come before you

  1415. and we just

  1416. celebrate all you've done

  1417. and this dear man

  1418. and his family

  1419. and we pray

  1420. that blessing

  1421. for all of us

  1422. and we pray

  1423. these things

  1424. in your son

  1425. Jesus name

  1426. Amen

  1427. Thank you

  1428. Thank you

1429. So if I ask you

  1430. to come up here

  1431. I promise you

  1432. I'll follow the script

  1433. next time

  1434. okay

  1435. so I'm not gonna

  1436. hey you know

1437. as we look at the passage

  1438. here

  1439. Jesus comes

  1440. and he has this

  1441. massive collision

  1442. with men

  1443. who've lost perspective

  1444. on rest

  1445. and God

  1446. and work

  1447. in Mark 2

  1448. the story goes

  1449. in 23

  1450. that he's walking

  1451. through the greenfield

  1452. with his disciples

  1453. it's on the Sabbath

  1454. and his disciples

  1455. are basically

  1456. walking through the edges

  1457. because all the roads

1458. would be on the edges

  1459. of the field

  1460. and on the edges

  1461. of the field

  1462. there was a rule

  1463. it's called a gleaning law

  1464. that you wouldn't

  1465. cut down the grain

1466. but you would leave it

  1467. for the poor people

  1468. or for the travelers

  1469. and so the disciples

  1470. are walking

  1471. through these fields

  1472. on the edge

1473. and they grab some grain

  1474. like this

  1475. and they rub it

  1476. in their hands

  1477. and they blow it

1478. to get rid of the husk

  1479. which you do

1480. if you're out on the farm

  1481. and then they start

  1482. to eat it

  1483. and immediately

  1484. when the Pharisees

  1485. see this

  1486. they say look

  1487. verse 24

  1488. what you are doing

  1489. is not lawful

  1490. on the Sabbath

1491. if you do some study

  1492. and reading

  1493. you're going to realize

  1494. that it is lawful

1495. and you can do it

  1496. but the Pharisees

  1497. had taken the Sabbath

1498. and added all these rules

  1499. that made it

  1500. not lawful

  1501. and it's interesting

  1502. how Jesus answers them

  1503. he doesn't say

  1504. come on guys

  1505. you don't know

  1506. what you're doing

  1507. you don't know

  1508. what you're talking about

1509. but he just takes them

  1510. right to scripture

1511. and he says to them

  1512. have you never read

  1513. so whenever Jesus says

  1514. have you never read

  1515. to you

  1516. you know immediately

1517. what it's going to mean

1518. is he's going to take you

  1519. to the word

  1520. and say let's do

  1521. some Bible study here

  1522. have you never read

  1523. what David did

  1524. King David

1525. when he was in need

  1526. with his companions

  1527. they became hungry

  1528. they entered the house

  1529. of God

1530. in the time of Abathar

  1531. the high priest

1532. and in the house of God

1533. there were 12 loaves of bread

1534. that were baked every Sabbath

  1535. and they were laid

  1536. before the altar

1537. they were the show bread

  1538. they were only for

  1539. the priest to eat

  1540. supposedly

  1541. and David came in

  1542. and he was hungry

1543. and he went to the high priest

1544. and said my men need food

  1545. and we're on a mission

  1546. from God

  1547. God is annoying me

  1548. and we're doing

1549. what God has called us to do

  1550. and the high priest

1551. gives them the show bread

  1552. and they eat it

  1553. and they're filled

  1554. and so Jesus says

  1555. have you not read

1556. this is what King David did

  1557. and how the priest

1558. and gave it to them

1559. and they were also with him

  1560. and then Jesus says

  1561. in verse 27

1562. the Sabbath was made for man

  1563. and not man

  1564. for the Sabbath

1565. what he's telling the Pharisees

1566. and what he's telling us

1567. is that God didn't create

  1568. you and me

1569. so that we could serve

  1570. our Sundays

1571. or whatever our Sabbath is

  1572. but he created

  1573. that Sunday

  1574. that day of rest

  1575. to serve us

1576. to come alongside of us

  1577. to give us rest

  1578. and relaxation

  1579. and restitution

  1580. that God's laws

  1581. were meant to be

  1582. a blessing

  1583. to all of us

  1584. they were never meant

1585. to put us into bondage

  1586. but what you see

  1587. really quickly

  1588. is when people

  1589. step into religion

  1590. they take God's

  1591. good and perfect law

  1592. and they add things

  1593. onto it

  1594. and there's this expectation

  1595. and the law

  1596. then becomes

  1597. not a good thing

  1598. but it becomes

  1599. a bad thing

  1600. it doesn't become

  1601. a gift

  1602. it becomes

  1603. a curse

  1604. and you've had that

  1605. happen in your life

  1606. before haven't you

  1607. someone asks you

  1608. and they're going to

  1609. give you something

  1610. and you're like

1611. well if I take this

1612. what am I going to have to do

  1613. to receive this

1614. I'm going to have to go down

1615. I'm going to have to

1616. do this and this and this

1617. I'm going to have to register

1618. I'm going to have to fill out

  1619. all these paperwork

1620. I'm going to get this gift

1621. and it's not going to be

  1622. really what I expected

1623. and it's going to end up

  1624. being more work

1625. than I thought it would be

1626. maybe I'm the only one

  1627. who's had that experience

1628. but it seems like it happens

1629. a lot in Hong Kong

1630. when they want to give you things

  1631. I just don't even want

  1632. to take things

  1633. because there's always

1634. something I have to fill out

  1635. and it's something

  1636. I have to do

1637. and that's the way it was

  1638. in Jesus' day

  1639. with the Sabbath

1640. it was meant to just be

  1641. given to people

  1642. as a gift

  1643. and to relax

  1644. and to observe

  1645. and to remember

  1646. what God has done

  1647. and to worship Him

  1648. and to know that

  1649. they're not slaves

  1650. but it became something

1651. that they had to take

1652. and they had to do for

  1653. so the average person

  1654. had to work harder

  1655. on the Sabbath

1656. than they had to do

1657. on any day of the week

  1658. and Jesus says

  1659. that the Sabbath

  1660. was not made

  1661. man was not made

  1662. to serve the Sabbath

  1663. but the Sabbath

1664. was made to serve man

  1665. and verse 28

  1666. he says

1667. so the Son of Man

  1668. is Lord

  1669. even over the Sabbath

  1670. what he's basically saying

  1671. is hey I'm God

1672. and I created these things

  1673. and I know

1674. and I don't want to go on to it

1675. because we're going to get

1676. back to that later on

  1677. but the minute

  1678. he said that

1679. the Pharisees were not happy

  1680. Mark 3 goes on

  1681. and it says

  1682. on another Sabbath

1683. he entered into a synagogue

1684. and there was a man

1685. there was a withered hand

1686. and I have a lot of questions

1687. like why was he there

  1688. what happened

  1689. most people think

  1690. it was a setup

  1691. most people think

  1692. the Pharisees heard

  1693. what Jesus said

  1694. at the beginning

  1695. and they said

  1696. okay let's test him

1697. let's see if he really cares

1698. about people more than himself

1699. let's see if he really cares

1700. about people more than the Sabbath

1701. let's see if he's going to do

1702. what he says he's going to do

1703. and so they're waiting for them

1704. and they put this man

1705. with a withered hand in there

  1706. and verse 2

  1707. they're watching him

  1708. it's this keen

  1709. intense eagle eye look

  1710. everybody's watching

1711. to see what he's going to do

1712. is he going to heal this man

1713. on this day of rest

1714. this day that is not supposed

  1715. to do anything

  1716. with all these rules

1717. so they might accuse him

  1718. he realizes that

  1719. in verse 3

1720. and he calls the man

  1721. with a withered hand

1722. and he says come forward

1723. and basically he's coming forward

1724. in the midst of everybody

1725. so he's the center of attention

1726. and Jesus asked a question

1727. that could only have one answer

1728. if you knew God's word

  1729. only one answer

  1730. the answer is yes

  1731. but the Pharisees

  1732. had taken the yes

1733. and put all these qualifications

  1734. and clarifications

1735. and it became a no

1736. and he says in verse 4

1737. is it lawful to do good

1738. or to do harm on the Sabbath

  1739. to save life

  1740. or to kill it

  1741. and everybody knew

1742. that if you're on the Sabbath

1743. and your cow fell in a hole

1744. you pulled your cow out

1745. and if something else happened

  1746. and someone was hurt

1747. you were supposed to help them

  1748. but the religious people

  1749. of Jesus' day

1750. had changed this good thing

  1751. into a curse

  1752. and so we're told

1753. that immediately after he asked it

  1754. they kept silent

  1755. they couldn't say anything

  1756. verse 5

1757. after looking around at them

  1758. in anger

  1759. and it's this incredibly

  1760. deep righteous anger

1761. but at the same time

  1762. you have anger

  1763. and you have compassion

  1764. he's grieved

  1765. so he feels anger

  1766. and upset

1767. how they've taken something amazing

  1768. like the Sabbath

1769. it was meant to be a gift

  1770. but they've turned it

  1771. into a curse

1772. and instead of freeing people

1773. it's putting people in bondage

1774. instead of giving people perspective

  1775. it's made people lose

  1776. perspective

  1777. it's made people lose

  1778. God

1779. and so Jesus is angry with them

  1780. and he's grieved

1781. at the hardness of their heart

1782. and so he calls the man forward

  1783. and he says

  1784. stretch out your hand

1785. and he stretched it out

1786. and his hand was restored

1787. did Jesus do any work?

  1788. no

  1789. he didn't touch them

  1790. he didn't do anything

  1791. according to the Torah

  1792. or the laws

  1793. that would say

  1794. he did something bad

1795. the man's hand was healed

  1796. as he stretched out

  1797. but in verse 6

1798. we see that the Pharisees

  1799. when they saw this

  1800. in Matthew

  1801. in Luke

1802. it says they were furious

  1803. they were angry

  1804. they were overwhelmed

  1805. they were spitting

  1806. fire and venom

  1807. and they conspired

  1808. with their enemies

  1809. the Herodians

  1810. it was so bad

  1811. that the Pharisees

1812. who were the law keepers

  1813. and Herodians

1814. who were in the government officials

  1815. who were just

  1816. the non-believers

  1817. the licentious people

  1818. the people who were

1819. doing whatever they wanted to do

  1820. they were mostly Romans

  1821. and Greeks

  1822. it was so bad

1823. and Jesus offended them so much

  1824. that they got together

  1825. to figure out

1826. how they might destroy Jesus

  1827. they realized

  1828. that in Christ's teaching

  1829. and in grace

  1830. and mercy

  1831. that their self-righteousness

1832. was going to be destroyed

1833. and their way of life

1834. was going to be destroyed

  1835. their religion

1836. was going to be destroyed

  1837. the moment people saw

  1838. grace

  1839. in the gospel

  1840. and that happens

  1841. in our lives

  1842. doesn't it?

  1843. you see people

  1844. who live religious lives

1845. and you look at them

  1846. and you go

  1847. wow I'm so tired

  1848. I can't even

  1849. I can't even think about

1850. being that type of person

1851. but then you see a person

  1852. who understands the gospel

  1853. and they understand grace

  1854. and God's love

  1855. and this free gift

  1856. and their life is

  1857. sweet

  1858. their life is freeing

  1859. their life is good

1860. so what do we do

  1861. with all these stories?

  1862. I mean I've been thinking

1863. about these for a while

1864. what do we do with work

1865. and what do we do with rest

1866. and what do we do

  1867. with perspective

1868. and what do we do

  1869. with healing

1870. and what do we do

  1871. with the grain fields

1872. and what do we do

  1873. with all these laws?

  1874. some people would say

  1875. that these rules

  1876. and these laws

  1877. and this text

1878. they don't apply to us anymore

  1879. because we're Christians

  1880. and we have mercy

  1881. and we have grace

1882. we don't need to observe

  1883. the Sabbath

1884. we don't need to do it

  1885. we can move on

  1886. and live our lives

1887. the way we want to

  1888. but I don't know

1889. I mean it seems to me

  1890. that Jesus did it

  1891. the perfect man

  1892. the perfect God

  1893. he observed the Sabbath

  1894. and I don't think

  1895. that we've changed

  1896. so much as

1897. people did in Jesus' day

  1898. I mean biologically

  1899. we're the same

  1900. psychologically

  1901. the same

  1902. sociologically

  1903. we're the same

  1904. we still struggle

  1905. with these things

  1906. in our life

  1907. we still struggle

  1908. with balance

  1909. and legalism

  1910. we still struggle

  1911. with work and rest

  1912. we still struggle

  1913. with grace

  1914. we still struggle

  1915. with religion

  1916. and not religion

  1917. or the gospel

  1918. I'm fearful to say

1919. this is what we need to do

1920. because you need to go

  1921. before the Lord

  1922. and ask him

1923. what am I doing here

  1924. am I having perspective

  1925. have I lost perspective

1926. how do I keep perspective

1927. in my time with you

1928. but these are some of the things

  1929. that I've personally

  1930. found in my life

  1931. as I struggle

  1932. with these passages

  1933. these are some

  1934. Sabbath questions

  1935. I ask myself

1936. and I want to share them

  1937. with you really quickly

  1938. the first question

1939. I have to ask myself

1940. is where am I getting

  1941. my identity

  1942. and my security

  1943. where am I getting

  1944. my identity

  1945. and my security from

  1946. is it from

1947. is it from my work

  1948. is it because

  1949. I do a good sermon

  1950. and everybody comes up

1951. and pats me on the back

  1952. so that's a great sermon

1953. because things are getting good

  1954. and people are growing

  1955. and people are coming

  1956. and people are coming

  1957. and oh Lord

  1958. is that where

  1959. I'm getting my identity

  1960. is that where

  1961. I'm feeling secure

1962. I mean you can transpose

  1963. that to your work

  1964. where do you get

  1965. your identity

  1966. on Monday

1967. and where does your security

  1968. come from

  1969. where am I looking

  1970. for my self worth

  1971. and meaning

  1972. and purpose

1973. and where am I finding it

  1974. I mean if I don't focus

  1975. on the Sabbath

  1976. and creation

  1977. and God giving us

  1978. these things

  1979. in a life cycle

1980. and he's given it to us

  1981. to bless us

1982. and he's given it to us

1983. to free us from bondage

  1984. if I'm not focusing

  1985. on the Sabbath

1986. that answers all those questions

  1987. about me

  1988. and who I am

  1989. then where am I

  1990. answering those questions

  1991. where am I getting

  1992. the meaning of life

  1993. questions answered

  1994. where am I getting

  1995. the meaning of

  1996. am I good

  1997. answered

  1998. those are some

  1999. questions I ask myself

  2000. what does it really

  2001. look like for Tobin

  2002. to rest and worship

2003. I mean what does it

  2004. really look like

  2005. for us as people

  2006. of God's people

  2007. to worship and rest

  2008. I mean

  2009. I have such a hard time

  2010. slowing down

  2011. sometimes

  2012. and I know

  2013. that you guys

  2014. do too

  2015. and I think about

  2016. 1971 Montgomery

  2017. Alabama

2018. and life was too busy

  2019. and too out of

  2020. perspective then

  2021. and Hong Kong

  2022. 2013

  2023. surely

  2024. there's an exponential

  2025. factor of like

  2026. a billion there

  2027. right

  2028. but where

  2029. where am I

  2030. slowing down

  2031. sometimes

  2032. when I slow down

  2033. I don't know

2034. if you feel this way

  2035. but you

  2036. you're actually

  2037. just replacing

  2038. one work

  2039. with another

  2040. form of work

  2041. you ever felt that

2042. I'm not going to do this

2043. I'm not going to focus

  2044. on this

2045. but what I end up doing

2046. is focusing on other things

  2047. I'm just as busy

2048. I mean some of us

  2049. we're about to go

  2050. on a vacation

  2051. and you can spend

  2052. a lot of time

  2053. just planning your vacation

  2054. and doing things

  2055. and have every minute

  2056. every day

  2057. and you sit back

  2058. and go well

  2059. I'm supposed to

  2060. relax

2061. but you don't end up

  2062. relaxing

  2063. because you're just

2064. as busy on your vacation

  2065. as you are

  2066. at work

  2067. and some people say

  2068. well it's fun

  2069. fun busyness

  2070. maybe

  2071. but it doesn't

  2072. speak to our soul

  2073. it doesn't speak

  2074. to us

  2075. about who God is

  2076. it doesn't speak

  2077. to us about

  2078. the relationship

  2079. that God wants

  2080. to have with us

  2081. it doesn't speak

  2082. about the quiet times

  2083. where he wants

  2084. to meet us

  2085. and spend time

  2086. with us

  2087. and listen to us

  2088. and talk to us

  2089. where am I

  2090. fitting in that

  2091. busyness

  2092. and where am I

  2093. getting rest

  2094. maybe I should ask

  2095. the Deuteronomy 5

  2096. question

  2097. the question

  2098. I ask myself

  2099. is this

  2100. what am I

  2101. a slave to

  2102. what is it

  2103. that enslaves

  2104. me today

  2105. what is it

  2106. in this world

  2107. and in our workplace

  2108. that has captured us

  2109. what is it

  2110. that drives us

  2111. to do the things

  2112. that we do

  2113. what is it

  2114. that drives us

  2115. to do the things

  2116. that we want

  2117. to prove ourselves

  2118. to be good workers

  2119. in and good fathers

  2120. in and good pastors

  2121. in and everything else

  2122. and what is it

  2123. that drives us

  2124. in those things

  2125. and what Jesus

  2126. is saying

  2127. in his passage

  2128. is if we don't

  2129. focus on the Sabbath

  2130. and what God

  2131. has done

  2132. in the relationship

  2133. and that he's

  2134. in control

  2135. if we don't

  2136. focus on those things

  2137. then the things

  2138. that are going

  2139. to drive us

  2140. aren't going

  2141. to be him

  2142. and they're going

  2143. to turn into idols

  2144. and idols

  2145. are never a good

  2146. thing in the Bible

  2147. it's what

  2148. in Exodus

  2149. we're freed from

  2150. but what is it

  2151. that drives us

  2152. and what is it

  2153. that makes us

  2154. do what we do

  2155. when you go

  2156. to work

  2157. this Monday

  2158. is there anything

  2159. that's going

  2160. to enslave you

  2161. is there anything

  2162. that's going

  2163. to push out

  2164. your margin

  2165. and push out

  2166. your time

  2167. and push out

  2168. your time

  2169. with the Lord

  2170. what does that

  2171. thing look like

  2172. another question

  2173. I ask myself

  2174. basically is this

  2175. you know if I

  2176. spent a day

  2177. with God

  2178. or half a day

  2179. or three hours

  2180. and I just

  2181. spent time

  2182. focusing on God

  2183. and his creation

  2184. which Jesus

  2185. people did

  2186. in the Sabbath

  2187. they remembered

  2188. the creation

  2189. Genesis

  2190. they remembered

  2191. all that God

  2192. did

  2193. Exodus

  2194. they remembered

  2195. that God

  2196. rested

  2197. they remembered

  2198. that God

  2199. freed them

  2200. from slavery

  2201. Deuteronomy

  2202. they remembered

  2203. that God

  2204. goes before them

  2205. they remembered

  2206. that God

  2207. is there

  2208. when it doesn't

  2209. seem like

  2210. he's there

  2211. and things

  2212. are out of

  2213. control

  2214. and we're

  2215. about to get

  2216. fired

  2217. they remember

  2218. that God

  2219. is always

  2220. walking with

  2221. them as his

  2222. people

  2223. what does that

  2224. look like

  2225. in our lives

  2226. if I were to

  2227. spend three hours

  2228. just focusing

  2229. and worshiping

  2230. and thanking him

  2231. for doing that

  2232. would that be

  2233. a good thing

  2234. what would it

  2235. look like

  2236. if I just

  2237. trusted him

  2238. and I

  2239. rested him

  2240. I rested

  2241. in him

  2242. I remember

  2243. when those

  2244. blue laws

  2245. were taken

  2246. away in

  2247. Montgomery

  2248. Alabama

  2249. it was a

  2250. huge thing

  2251. there was a

  2252. massive fight

  2253. people were

  2254. fighting

  2255. don't do this

  2256. don't stop

  2257. these things

  2258. don't do

  2259. these things

  2260. we're going

  2261. to lose

  2262. perspective

  2263. things are

  2264. going to

  2265. get bad

  2266. and the thing

  2267. that always

  2268. came forward

  2269. was we have

  2270. to do this

  2271. because we

  2272. need more

  2273. money to

  2274. survive

  2275. and let

  2276. our businesses

  2277. work

  2278. and if we

  2279. take a break

  2280. then we

  2281. don't have

  2282. the amount

  2283. of money

  2284. that we

  2285. could have

  2286. got on

  2287. Sunday

  2288. and our

  2289. lives are

  2290. going to

  2291. be worse

  2292. off

  2293. and I

  2294. realize

  2295. those are

  2296. the same

  2297. issues

  2298. we struggle

  2299. with

  2300. aren't they

  2301. I don't know

  2302. if I can

  2303. put my

  2304. cell phone

  2305. down

  2306. and my

  2307. Blackberry

  2308. down

  2309. because I

  2310. need to do

  2311. this business

  2312. thing here

  2313. and if I

  2314. don't do

  2315. this business

  2316. thing here

  2317. that I'm

  2318. not going

  2319. to get

  2320. to this

  2321. place

  2322. and I'm

  2323. not going

  2324. to have

  2325. the money

  2326. that I

  2327. need

  2328. and things

  2329. aren't going

  2330. to be the

  2331. way that I

  2332. wanted them

  2333. to and churches

  2334. are going to

  2335. work out the

  2336. way I planned

  2337. it because I

  2338. wasn't speaking

  2339. into everything

  2340. what Jesus

  2341. says and

  2342. what God

  2343. says is

  2344. that he's in

  2345. control and

  2346. that if we're

  2347. his people

  2348. if we're his

  2349. children we can

  2350. trust him because

  2351. he's good

  2352. would it be a

  2353. bad day

  2354. or a bad

  2355. thing to

  2356. spend three

  2357. hours just

  2358. worshiping him

  2359. and thanking

  2360. him

  2361. praying

  2362. the Pharisees

  2363. did not like

  2364. this they were

  2365. angry

  2366. back to verse

  2367. 28 Jesus

  2368. says I am

  2369. the Lord

  2370. I control

  2371. even the

  2372. Sabbath and

  2373. what he's

  2374. saying here

  2375. in a very

  2376. deep way

  2377. in a very

  2378. complex way

  2379. what Jesus

  2380. says is if

  2381. you want to

  2382. have rest

  2383. the only way

  2384. you're ultimately

  2385. going to have

  2386. rest

  2387. is in me

  2388. you can keep

  2389. the laws

  2390. you can do

  2391. all those

  2392. things

  2393. but unless

  2394. you have a

  2395. relationship

  2396. with me

  2397. creator of

  2398. all things

  2399. you're never

  2400. going to have

  2401. rest

  2402. you're always

  2403. going to be

  2404. busy

  2405. that's my

  2406. struggle

  2407. I speak

  2408. that and

  2409. I think

  2410. that but I

  2411. don't live

  2412. that often

  2413. I think that

  2414. most of us

  2415. are like that

  2416. also

  2417. if you're weary

  2418. if you're tired

  2419. if you need

  2420. rest

  2421. throughout the

  2422. gospel

  2423. Jesus says

  2424. the only way

  2425. to get it

  2426. is by trusting

  2427. him

  2428. coming to

  2429. him

  2430. because he's

  2431. the Lord of

  2432. the Sabbath

  2433. he's our

  2434. ultimate rest

  2435. he's good

  2436. he created

  2437. everything for

  2438. you

  2439. he freed

  2440. you from

  2441. bondage

  2442. he wants to

  2443. walk with

  2444. you on his
