  1. Today's scripture reading is found in Malachi, chapter 1, verses 6 to 14.

    Malachi 1:6–14

  2. Please follow along as I read.

  3. A son honours his father, and a servant his master.

  4. If then I am a father, where is my honour?

  5. If I am a master, where is my fear, says the Lord of hosts to you, O priests who despise my name.

  6. But you say, how have we despised your name?

  7. By offering polluted food upon my altar.

  8. But you say, how have we polluted you?

  9. By saying that the Lord's table may be despised.

  10. When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil?

  11. And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil?

  12. Present that to your governor.

  13. Will he accept you or show you favour, says the Lord of hosts?

  14. And now entreat the favour of God.

  15. That he may be gracious to us.

  16. With such a gift from your hand, will he show favour to any of you, says the Lord of hosts?

  17. O that there were one among you who would shut the doors, that you might not kindle fire upon my altar in vain.

  18. I have no pleasure in you, says the Lord of hosts.

  19. And I will not accept an offering from your hand.

  20. For from the rising of the sun to its setting, my name will be great among the nations.

  21. In every place, incense will be offered to my name and a pure offering.

  22. For my name will be great among the nations, says the Lord of hosts.

  23. But you profane it when you say that the Lord's table is polluted, and its fruit, that is, its food, may be despised.

  24. But you say, what a weariness this is.

  25. And you snort at it, says the Lord of hosts.

  26. You bring what has been taken by violence, or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering?

  27. Shall I accept that from your hand, says the Lord?

  28. Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished.

  29. For I am a great king, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

  30. This is the reading of God's word.

  31. Please be seated.

  32. Good morning, everyone.

  33. If you haven't met me before, my name is Alistair, and I'm one of the pastors here at Watermark Church.

  34. But I've only been here for a short time, maybe three months now.

  35. So if you haven't met me, then please come and say hello.

  36. I'd love to come and meet you.

  37. One of my cousin's kids, I asked her once, she went to school, and it was kind of before, it was like a preschool.

  38. She was only four years old.

  39. And I said, so, are there many friends at your preschool?

  40. And she said, there are so many friends that I haven't even met them all yet.

  41. And so that's kind of what it's like with you guys.

  42. You're all friends, but I haven't met some of you yet.

  43. So I hope that I will meet all of you as time goes on.

  44. And we have a bunch of people here also that are from overseas and have come and joined us in the elite crowd.

  45. So it's great to see you guys here.

  46. When I visited Watermark last year, actually, you guys were here too.

  47. So if you were here last year, I remember you from then.

  48. 24 hours ago, I was in Singapore, trying to get ready to pack and leave to come back to Hong Kong.

  49. And I've been on it two weeks away in Taipei and Singapore with Aldrin and also with Eric.

  50. And we were on the City to City Redeemer Church Planning Training and Assessment Program.

  51. It was a four-week program, two weeks in Hong Kong, a bit in Taipei, a bit in Singapore.

  52. And it was a fantastic time to get to know different church planners from all around the Asia-Pacific area,

  53. to see different church plants, including Watermark, in action, in Taipei as well and in Singapore,

  54. and to meet some trainers and people who had been church planners,

  55. who had done it for maybe two years, five years, ten years, twenty years,

  56. and to learn from these people.

  57. It was a great opportunity.

  58. And because I knew that I was preaching back here on Sunday,

  59. I was preparing kind of during the week as I was away as well,

  60. and I thought, oh, that's all right, I've got Saturday to prepare.

  61. And, you know, I'd always wished when I was working in previous jobs

  62. that I'd had one of those jobs which would send you flying all over the world, you know,

  63. and you'd be able to, like, work from your laptop, and you'd go wherever you like,

  64. and you'd see all these different places.

  65. And so I was kind of experiencing this, and it was really great to be overseas

  66. and to be learning from these guys.

  67. But I've realized it's actually really hard work to try and work while you're on the go.

  68. So, you know, it takes me about probably 15 minutes to really kind of get settled

  69. and to think and to pray and to get ready to start the creative process

  70. that's required to begin working on a sermon.

  71. But when you're going from airport lounge to airport lounge to plane to off the plane,

  72. you only really get about 20 minutes at a sitting.

  73. So you just kind of just barely get started, and they're like,

  74. okay, final call, Mr. Alistair Chu, kind of thing.

  75. And then when you get on the plane, you finally have some uninterrupted time.

  76. But if you happen to be sitting next to a 6'8 giant like Eric happens to be,

  77. there isn't a lot of room to move and to put the laptop up and so on.

  78. And it's just, yeah, it's just tricky.

  79. So I really thank you for those who've been praying for today.

  80. I really need it.

  81. We all have things that kind of we wished for maybe when we were younger,

  82. but that maybe didn't turn out quite the way that we expected them to.

  83. You know, some kind of disappointment, like with me and the flying thing.

  84. But what if we're disappointed in God?

  85. What would that look like?

  86. Suppose we doubted what God had to say and mistrusted him.

  87. Or suppose that we had grown weary in serving God, or perhaps lazy,

  88. and had a lack of devotion in our hearts.

  89. Suppose that we thought that it was futile to serve God,

  90. that there was this futility that we were questioning.

  91. You know, is this worth it?

  92. Like, what is the purpose of us doing this?

  93. And so we end up dishonoring or disrespecting the name of God.

  94. Well, that's the situation which we find ourselves here in Malachi,

  95. the first few chapters,

  96. where the Israelites have reached a stage

  97. where they have grown weary of serving God.

  98. And as a result,

  99. they bring dishonor and disrespect to,

  100. as it says,

  101. the table of the Lord.

  102. And as Alfie said before,

  103. you can understand it.

  104. Because it had been some time

  105. since they had seen

  106. kind of the great and marvelous works of God.

  107. And when they came back,

  108. so these Israelites have been away from the land in exile,

  109. punished by God for their disobedience,

  110. and they have come back

  111. expecting to rebuild their land.

  112. But somehow,

  113. what they saw in front of them

  114. didn't match up to the expectations which they had.

  115. And so they were disappointed.

  116. They were weary.

  117. They scoffed at God,

  118. and they wondered whether it was worth it at all to serve Him.

  119. And this is shown in their sacrifices,

  120. when they were bringing unworthy sacrifices to God.

  121. As it says,

  122. they were bringing blind, lame, or diseased animals to God.

  123. You can just imagine,

  124. you know,

  125. you've got a dinner party, right?

  126. And someone's,

  127. you know,

  128. a friend is coming over.

  129. And let's say you owned a farm,

  130. and you had a bunch of sheep out there,

  131. and you're going to sacrifice or slaughter one of them for the meal.

  132. And, you know,

  133. one of them got run over by truck.

  134. And you're like,

  135. oh, that one,

  136. that'll do.

  137. Let's grab that one,

  138. and we'll take that.

  139. I mean, he's dead anyway,

  140. so, you know,

  141. we can just clean it off a bit,

  142. get the tire marks off it,

  143. and then we'll be good to go.

  144. We'll serve it for dinner.

  145. What if,

  146. instead of a friend,

  147. it was, say,

  148. the town mayor?

  149. Or a sporting hero of yours?

  150. Or perhaps the Queen of England,

  151. for those of you who are from Commonwealth countries?

  152. You show disrespect to your honored guest

  153. by what you present on the table.

  154. And in this case,

  155. it's not just an honored guest,

  156. but the God of the universe

  157. that the Israelites are serving,

  158. who saved them again and again,

  159. who they are showing disrespect.

  160. And they grumble and complain about it as well.

  161. You know,

  162. they say,

  163. this is a weariness.

  164. And is it worth it to serve God?

  165. You see in chapter 3.

  166. They question God's love for them

  167. back in verse 2 of chapter 1.

  168. And they felt like it's a burden,

  169. a great burden to serve the Lord

  170. down there in verse 13.

  171. Why did they keep doing it then?

  172. Why were they bringing these sacrifices,

  173. which clearly their heart was not in,

  174. out of a sense of obligation, perhaps?

  175. A sense of duty.

  176. You see,

  177. verse 9 tells us that

  178. they actually wanted acceptance from God.

  179. They wanted to gain His favor.

  180. And so they keep doing it

  181. in such a way as to,

  182. perhaps,

  183. that God might show favor to them.

  184. Warning something from His hand.

  185. Or,

  186. it could be that they do it

  187. to gain approval from others.

  188. To be seen to be doing the right thing.

  189. Jesus talks about that

  190. when He's talking with the Pharisees.

  191. And He says,

  192. He talks about them

  193. loving to do their deeds before others.

  194. To be seen by others.

  195. You see,

  196. their practices

  197. revealed what is inside their hearts.

  198. Their unworthy hearts.

  199. Because ultimately,

  200. there's a lack of love for God

  201. in their hearts.

  202. Sometimes my dad

  203. would often clean up the table.

  204. And when I say clean up,

  205. I don't mean like into the bin.

  206. I would mean clean up the food

  207. left over by his kids, us,

  208. and it would go into his mouth.

  209. And often he would say,

  210. you know,

  211. I'm the laptop tongue,

  212. the rubbish bin, right?

  213. And that's what he'd call himself.

  214. And, you know,

  215. it was a joke and so on.

  216. But what if,

  217. you know,

  218. say it's Father's Day

  219. or it's birthday, right?

  220. And we kids are like,

  221. you know,

  222. creating a card

  223. and we pull out,

  224. you know,

  225. a bit of cardboard

  226. from the rubbish bin.

  227. It's got a bit of food

  228. all over it

  229. and kind of scrape it off

  230. and we write on that

  231. and present that

  232. as a gift to him.

  233. What kind of,

  234. how would he take that?

  235. What kind of dishonor

  236. and disrespect

  237. would that be to him?

  238. What it would show

  239. is that

  240. we didn't really care

  241. about God.

  242. Sorry,

  243. about,

  244. we kids wouldn't have cared

  245. about our dad.

  246. We were just going

  247. through the motions.

  248. It was just an obligation.

  249. And how do you think

  250. God feels

  251. about the way

  252. that the Israelites

  253. are going about

  254. their sacrifices,

  255. going through the motions

  256. full of weariness

  257. and laziness,

  258. full of doubt

  259. and mistrust

  260. and a lack of devotion?

  261. I'll tell you

  262. how he feels.

  263. In verse 10,

  264. he wishes that

  265. they would shut

  266. the doors of the temple.

  267. They would just

  268. shut the doors

  269. and close it all up,

  270. put out the fires,

  271. forget it,

  272. go home.

  273. Don't even bother coming,

  274. he says,

  275. because your hearts

  276. are not there.

  277. You haven't come

  278. at all, really.

  279. You've been,

  280. you've left

  281. your hearts at home

  282. or wherever

  283. they're desiring

  284. and you're just

  285. going through the motions.

  286. A lack of love

  287. for God

  288. in their hearts

  289. means that they're

  290. disobeying

  291. the greatest commandment,

  292. that is to love

  293. the Lord your God

  294. with all your heart

  295. and soul

  296. and mind

  297. and strength.

  298. Well,

  299. have you ever

  300. felt like this?

  301. Who are we serving?

  302. If we're not serving God,

  303. then we end up

  304. serving ourselves.

  305. There are many things

  306. that we chase after

  307. in the city

  308. and in the city

  309. where I'm from,

  310. in Sydney,

  311. people chase after

  312. security

  313. in the form of property

  314. and they chase after

  315. status and power

  316. and position

  317. as defined by wealth.

  318. So the thing

  319. that Sydney people,

  320. Sydney scientists

  321. talk about most,

  322. more than anything else,

  323. is property,

  324. property values

  325. and where's the best place

  326. to buy

  327. and all that kind of thing.

  328. And I think

  329. it's not that different

  330. here in Hong Kong.

  331. People chase after

  332. these things

  333. and they get enslaved

  334. to them,

  335. sacrificing their family

  336. and friends

  337. and relationships

  338. and other things

  339. on the altar

  340. of success,

  341. of wealth,

  342. of status,

  343. of power.

  344. Who are we serving?

  345. Because what we serve

  346. is what captures

  347. our hearts.

  348. You might have a job

  349. and you say,

  350. I'm serving my boss.

  351. But what holds you there,

  352. binds you

  353. to that position

  354. with chains

  355. that are stronger

  356. than steel,

  357. often it's the status

  358. and the lifestyle

  359. that come with that job.

  360. Or perhaps

  361. it's the dream

  362. of a better life

  363. that might come

  364. in the future

  365. from this job.

  366. And underneath

  367. all of that,

  368. it's the approval

  369. of man

  370. that is driving us.

  371. You see,

  372. if these are the things

  373. that have captured

  374. our hearts,

  375. the reason why

  376. we get up in the morning,

  377. then these have

  378. effectively displaced God

  379. as the number one desire

  380. in our hearts.

  381. Because if we're not

  382. serving God,

  383. we're serving our idols.

  384. But you might say,

  385. some of us are serving God

  386. in our lives.

  387. We're heavily involved

  388. in church.

  389. We've been following God

  390. all our lives.

  391. Well, I say,

  392. like the Israelites,

  393. we too may be

  394. serving God

  395. to gain approval

  396. or acceptance

  397. or out of a sense

  398. of obligation

  399. or duty.

  400. Obligation means

  401. that we're doing it

  402. out of fear.

  403. We feel a deep need

  404. for acceptance,

  405. which is why we continue

  406. to go through the motions.

  407. Or perhaps

  408. our identity

  409. is so wrapped up

  410. in what we do

  411. that we keep on doing

  412. the Christian thing

  413. even though

  414. we might have lost

  415. the heart for it

  416. a long time ago.

  417. This is my story,

  418. actually.

  419. I've been serving

  420. as a minister

  421. for five years

  422. before I came here

  423. to Hong Kong.

  424. And before that,

  425. of course,

  426. I've been involved

  427. in university ministry

  428. and through Bible

  429. College and so on.

  430. And I think

  431. over that time,

  432. I just felt

  433. my heart slipping

  434. further and further

  435. away from

  436. where it should be.

  437. But I was still

  438. serving God.

  439. I was still

  440. going through

  441. the motions.

  442. I was still

  443. continuing to do

  444. all the things

  445. which were

  446. expected of me.

  447. But it was

  448. out of obligation.

  449. Perhaps out of a sense

  450. of identity

  451. that this is who I am

  452. as someone

  453. who serves God.

  454. But by then,

  455. my heart was

  456. no longer in it.

  457. And approval,

  458. I found as well,

  459. that we might

  460. try and serve God

  461. to impress others

  462. or perhaps even

  463. to impress ourselves

  464. to fulfill our own

  465. need for self-fulfillment

  466. in this world.

  467. We serve God,

  468. if we serve God

  469. out of approval,

  470. out of a motivation

  471. to look good

  472. in front of other people,

  473. and we base

  474. our self-concept

  475. and our self-worth

  476. on being the kind

  477. of person

  478. who is a good person,

  479. a moral person,

  480. a person who serves God,

  481. then that can lead

  482. to a couple of things.

  483. First of all,

  484. we can look down

  485. upon those

  486. who don't serve God

  487. in as good a way

  488. as we do,

  489. who don't have

  490. the compassion,

  491. who don't meet

  492. our standards of service.

  493. We'll begin to feel

  494. like we deserve

  495. acceptance

  496. and a better life

  497. from God

  498. because of what we do

  499. and who we are.

  500. You see,

  501. we're actually doing it

  502. to get favor

  503. from God,

  504. much like the Israelites

  505. were.

  506. Oh, and if,

  507. somehow,

  508. God doesn't favor us

  509. as we think we deserve,

  510. what happens then?

  511. Well,

  512. we get angry at Him,

  513. deeply angry.

  514. When trials

  515. and hardships come

  516. as God has said

  517. that they will come,

  518. we might say,

  519. God,

  520. it wasn't supposed

  521. to be this way.

  522. Didn't I do everything?

  523. Didn't I give up

  524. everything to serve you?

  525. Why aren't you

  526. blessing my ministry,

  527. my life?

  528. Our unworthy sacrifices

  529. also reveal

  530. something deeper

  531. that is going on.

  532. It is our hearts

  533. which are unworthy.

  534. So what do we do about it?

  535. Or what do we try

  536. and do about it?

  537. There's two things we try.

  538. First of all,

  539. is we try harder

  540. and then secondly,

  541. we give up.

  542. We try harder

  543. and that's the path

  544. of moralism.

  545. We strap on our boots

  546. and get out there

  547. and think that we can

  548. strive ourselves

  549. back into service.

  550. And that might work

  551. for a while.

  552. But what that leads to

  553. is a joyless Christianity.

  554. One where we've lost

  555. the heart of it

  556. and we're simply doing it.

  557. We're simply forcing

  558. ourselves to do that.

  559. And it's a Christianity

  560. that condemns others

  561. as well because we look

  562. down our noses

  563. at those who can't meet

  564. those standards

  565. that we do.

  566. But it's tiring

  567. living that way.

  568. And eventually,

  569. we get tired

  570. and we give up.

  571. God hasn't given us

  572. what we wanted

  573. and so we walk away.

  574. And what we're really

  575. saying in our hearts

  576. is,

  577. God,

  578. this thing that I wanted

  579. from you,

  580. this thing that I wanted

  581. is greater than my love

  582. for you

  583. and if I don't get it,

  584. then I will abandon you

  585. and walk away.

  586. because something else

  587. has displaced God

  588. in our hearts.

  589. Whether it's the approval

  590. of humans,

  591. whether it's a certain status

  592. that we wanted,

  593. a certain lifestyle,

  594. a certain friendship.

  595. And we forget

  596. that even though God

  597. has given us everything

  598. in our lives

  599. and He's been generous

  600. upon generous to us,

  601. we feel that He's distant

  602. and we feel that He's

  603. withholding from us

  604. and we feel that He's

  605. not generous at all.

  606. And like the Israelites,

  607. we lose our sense of love

  608. and thankfulness

  609. and we think of God

  610. as a miser

  611. withholding from us.

  612. And when we think that,

  613. then we turn into misers too.

  614. We keep things for ourselves.

  615. I'm willing to share ourselves

  616. with God and with others.

  617. Well, I've gone down

  618. both of these paths.

  619. Trying harder

  620. and then giving up.

  621. And I started to think of God

  622. as one who blessed other people,

  623. but not me.

  624. And so I turned away

  625. from the God

  626. who gave me life

  627. and breath

  628. and everything.

  629. My unworthy heart

  630. was shown

  631. in my actions.

  632. What will God do

  633. about our unworthy hearts?

  634. He will send one

  635. who is worthy

  636. to be the sacrifice

  637. that we couldn't make.

  638. He sent His Son

  639. to redeem us

  640. from our unworthiness.

  641. You see,

  642. Christ came to do

  643. what we could not.

  644. When He came,

  645. He served God

  646. fully

  647. and wholeheartedly

  648. without turning away,

  649. without giving up,

  650. all the way

  651. to the end,

  652. without self-seeking.

  653. And He became

  654. the truly worthy sacrifice

  655. that covered all

  656. of the unworthy sacrifices

  657. that the Israelites made

  658. and all of the unworthy sacrifices

  659. that we make.

  660. We're told

  661. to look to Christ

  662. as our sacrifice.

  663. We're told

  664. to look to Christ

  665. where we have

  666. full acceptance

  667. from God.

  668. We're told

  669. to look to Christ

  670. where we have,

  671. where we see

  672. divine approval

  673. from God.

  674. As Christ

  675. is the one

  676. who sacrificed Himself

  677. on the cross,

  678. so we see

  679. that we can

  680. come to Him

  681. and be accepted

  682. by God.

  683. No longer

  684. do we have to fear

  685. God's anger,

  686. God's punishment.

  687. No longer

  688. do we have to fear

  689. the approval,

  690. gaining or not gaining

  691. the approval

  692. of our fellow human beings.

  693. Because in the cross,

  694. God declares that,

  695. God declares His love

  696. for a people

  697. that have walked away

  698. from Him.

  699. For a humanity

  700. that has turned

  701. their back on Him,

  702. God reaches down

  703. and rescues us.

  704. It's not enough

  705. that God has created us,

  706. created the world

  707. that we live in,

  708. created the stars

  709. and the heavens

  710. and the trees

  711. that we see,

  712. the air that we breathe.

  713. It's not enough for us.

  714. We're still turned away.

  715. And so God came

  716. into the world,

  717. became one of us,

  718. died for us

  719. to win us back.

  720. That's the kind of God

  721. that we serve.

  722. The kind of God

  723. who wins us,

  724. whose acceptance

  725. we don't need to

  726. try and achieve.

  727. What that means

  728. is that we can now

  729. be free.

  730. Freed from that sense

  731. of obligation,

  732. of duty.

  733. Freed from that sense

  734. that I had before

  735. of feeling like

  736. I had to go

  737. through the motions

  738. to just continue

  739. doing this thing

  740. because this was

  741. my identity.

  742. My identity

  743. is now in Christ.

  744. And what that means

  745. for me

  746. is that

  747. I'm free

  748. to worship Him

  749. regardless of

  750. whether

  751. I'm a pastor,

  752. regardless of

  753. whether I'm teaching

  754. or not,

  755. regardless of

  756. of what I'm doing.

  757. I'm a child of God

  758. first and foremost.

  759. We can now be free

  760. to offer our sacrifices

  761. whether it's time,

  762. money,

  763. gifts,

  764. labor,

  765. even our families.

  766. We can offer it

  767. to Him

  768. without fear.

  769. We can offer it

  770. to Him

  771. without fear

  772. of missing out

  773. because in Christ

  774. we see that

  775. God is

  776. generous.

  777. we don't need

  778. to worry

  779. or fear

  780. about missing out

  781. of what God

  782. gives to us.

  783. As Jesus said,

  784. those who follow me,

  785. those who have given up

  786. much for me

  787. will receive many times

  788. in this world

  789. and then eternal life

  790. in the world to come.

  791. And we don't need

  792. to fear punishment

  793. because in Christ

  794. we see that God

  795. is forgiving.

  796. And these were the things

  797. that the Israelites

  798. were worried about.

  799. They were worried

  800. that they would miss out

  801. if they gave

  802. more of what they had

  803. to God

  804. because they saw God

  805. as somebody

  806. who was holding

  807. stuff tight

  808. and they were afraid

  809. of punishment.

  810. You see,

  811. it's a totally different

  812. way of relating to God.

  813. I call it thankfulness

  814. and it's kind of

  815. like a jealousy.

  816. A jealousy,

  817. a kind of a,

  818. what kids do,

  819. you know,

  820. when they snatch things

  821. away from one another.

  822. They say,

  823. this is mine,

  824. this is mine.

  825. We do that to God

  826. because we feel like

  827. He hasn't provided for us.

  828. If He hasn't given us enough,

  829. then we have to,

  830. with our own two hands,

  831. take what is ours.

  832. Instead of being

  833. like the Israelites

  834. who grumbled

  835. and complained about God,

  836. bringing their diseased

  837. and crippled sacrifices

  838. to God,

  839. having hardened hearts

  840. that lost their love

  841. for God long ago,

  842. we can see afresh

  843. the love of God

  844. for us.

  845. We can realize

  846. that He has given us

  847. everything

  848. and withheld

  849. not even His own Son.

  850. And what happens is

  851. that as our vision

  852. of God changes,

  853. as we see God

  854. who He truly is,

  855. as we turn away

  856. from seeing God

  857. as some kind of miser

  858. who holds on to things

  859. and refuses to give them

  860. to us,

  861. to being one who

  862. abundantly and generously

  863. and overflowingly

  864. gives us of His love

  865. and His acceptance

  866. and His favor,

  867. then we too

  868. can change

  869. from being miserly

  870. to overflowing

  871. with thankfulness,

  872. to being generous

  873. of spirit.

  874. And we won't hold on tight

  875. with clenched fists

  876. the things that we have

  877. to protect ourselves,

  878. but instead we'll be open,

  879. open-hearted

  880. with our friendship,

  881. with our relationships,

  882. with our service,

  883. with our wealth,

  884. regardless of whether

  885. we have much

  886. or little.

  887. Will we open

  888. with our very hearts

  889. because our very hearts

  890. will have been captured

  891. by the wonder

  892. of the heart of God

  893. who came,

  894. who sent His Son

  895. to come and die for us.

  896. And I need to hear this

  897. as much,

  898. if not more,

  899. than any of you.

  900. And it's a journey

  901. that we're all on together.

  902. And one of the great things

  903. that I love about

  904. our church here at Watermark

  905. is that we are on

  906. this journey together.

  907. You see,

  908. we learn the gospel

  909. in community

  910. and we help each other on

  911. knowing that

  912. none of us have yet made it,

  913. but that we're all heading

  914. towards the same goal

  915. and that is Christ.

  916. And so,

  917. won't you join me

  918. in heading towards Christ,

  919. in giving up

  920. the loves

  921. that take us away

  922. from God

  923. and in following

  924. after the things

  925. of our own hearts

  926. instead of having

  927. our hearts captured

  928. by the wonder of God.

  929. Let's pray.

  930. Father God,

  931. we thank you so much

  932. that even though

  933. we come to you

  934. with unworthy hearts,

  935. you are one

  936. who is worthy.

  937. And we pray

  938. that you would help us

  939. to be captured

  940. by your love,

  941. your worthiness,

  942. and your son.

  943. We thank you

  944. that Jesus came

  945. to sacrifice himself

  946. for us.

  947. We thank you

  948. that we

  949. are people

  950. that even though

  951. we bring nothing

  952. to you,

  953. you've done everything

  954. for us.

  955. Father,

  956. we know that even

  957. the sacrifices

  958. that we make

  959. are not worthy

  960. of you

  961. and our hearts

  962. are often mixed

  963. in their motivations.

  964. But Father,

  965. we ask that you

  966. would purify us,

  967. that you give us

  968. such a vision

  969. of who you are

  970. that would never

  971. leave us,

  972. that would encourage

  973. us when we're feeling

  974. the things

  975. of this world.

  976. Father,

  977. help us instead

  978. to overflow

  979. with thankfulness

  980. as a response

  981. to who you are

  982. and what you've

  983. done for us.

  984. we pray that we

  985. would also reflect

  986. that love

  987. towards one another

  988. and to this world.

  989. Amen.
