  1. Today's scripture reading comes from the book of Hosea.

  2. We'll select passages from chapter 1 and chapter 3.

  3. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  4. The word of the Lord came to Hosea, the son of Beri,

  5. in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah,

  6. in the days of Jeroboam, the son of Joash, king of Israel.

  7. When the Lord first spoke to Hosea, the Lord said to Hosea,

  8. Go take to yourself a wife of whoredom, and have children of whoredom,

  9. for the land commits great whoredom by forsaking the Lord.

  10. So he went and took Gomer, the daughter of Dublaim,

  11. and she conceived and bore him a son.

  12. And the Lord said to him, Call his name Jezreel,

  13. for in just a little while I will punish the house of Jehu for the blood of Jezreel,

  14. and I will put an end to the kingdom of the house of Israel.

  15. And on that day I will break the bow of Israel in the valley of Jezreel.

  16. She conceived again and bore a daughter.

  17. And the Lord said to him, Call her name No Mercy,

  18. for I will no more have mercy on the house of Israel to forgive them at all.

  19. But I will have mercy on the house of Judah,

  20. and I will save them by the Lord their God.

  21. I will not save them by bow or by sword or by war or by horses or by horsemen.

  22. When she had weaned no mercy, she conceived and bore a son.

  23. And the Lord said, Call his name Not My People,

  24. for you are not My people, and I am not your God.

  25. Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be like the sand of the sea,

  26. which cannot be measured or numbered.

  27. And in the place where it was said to them, You are not My people,

  28. it shall be said to them, Children of the living God.

  29. And the children of Judah and the children of Israel shall be gathered together,

  30. and they shall appoint for themselves one head.

  31. They shall go up from the land, for great shall be the day of Jezreel.

  32. Chapter 3.

  33. And the Lord said to me, Go again, love a woman who is loved by another man and is an adulteress,

  34. even as the Lord loves the children of Israel,

  35. though they turn to other gods and love cakes of raisins.

  36. So I bought her for fifteen shuckles of silver and a homer and a lethic of barley.

  37. And I said to her, You must dwell as Mine for many days.

  38. You shall not play the whore or belong to another man, so I will be to you.

  39. For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince,

  40. without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods.

  41. Afterward, the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord their God and David their king,

  42. and they shall come in fear to the Lord and to His goodness in the latter days.

  43. For the children of Israel shall return and seek the Lord and the Lord and to His goodness in the latter days.

  44. And they shall come together and so on.

  45. So I've been acting as the dad for the week.

  46. They're my godkids as well.

  47. But one of the things I learned about being a dad or having kids around is that,

  48. especially when you've got to focus just on them,

  49. and it's a two-year-old and a four-year-old that we're looking after.

  50. And the four-year-old has been described, perhaps euphemistically, as spirited or rambunctious or a handful.

  51. And so when we were taking them in and out of taxes and so on,

  52. you know, I'm not the most organized person anyway,

  53. and I can tend to be forgetful of, you know, my own personal belongings and so on.

  54. So when there's kids around, right, and you're responsible for making sure they get in and out of the taxi alive,

  55. then other things just kind of get left behind.

  56. And so one of the things I left behind was my phone in the taxi last week.

  57. And, yeah, it's sad to say we never heard from it again,

  58. even though we kind of sent through a message through the network.

  59. So if anyone's tried to call me or message me or text me or anything like that,

  60. I apologize.

  61. I haven't been able to get back to you.

  62. So, yeah, I asked another taxi driver, and he said,

  63. oh, I think I was about six hours later, and he said,

  64. you know what, it's probably in Shenzhen by now.

  65. So it's just gone.

  66. I haven't had a great run with taxis, actually.

  67. So we ended up in Hanoi last week.

  68. And, yeah, trying to keep two kids alive in Hanoi, I felt like, was my main job.

  69. I don't know if you've ever been to Vietnam or anywhere around in third world countries,

  70. but, you know, you're walking down the streets,

  71. and there's just thousands of motorcycles coming by you.

  72. And normally you can walk on the sidewalk, so it's sort of okay.

  73. But there was one street we went down which had no sidewalks.

  74. And so we were basically walking amongst, through, and around the motorbikes,

  75. and I just had to keep a firm grip on a rambunctious four-year,

  76. and watch out for this as well.

  77. When you end up in Hanoi, taxis try and scam you as well.

  78. So sometimes it's just a couple of dollars or so on,

  79. but on the trip back to the airport,

  80. because we had all these kids and all the luggage,

  81. and I was trying to make sure that everybody was going to be okay,

  82. the guy just said, okay, I said, how much?

  83. And he said, one and a half million dong.

  84. And I just handed it over without even thinking.

  85. And then I thought about, hang on a minute, that's 75 US dollars.

  86. That's like five times as much as what I paid to get back out.

  87. And so I sat back in the taxi and argued with him for the next five minutes.

  88. And they threatened to call the police and all that kind of stuff.

  89. And he gave me back like a third of it or something like that.

  90. So then he charged me, he overcharged me three times instead of five times what he should have.

  91. So Eric's going next week, so I'll have to tell him that story.

  92. I don't think he's here.

  93. But yeah, he has to make sure.

  94. You know, I was pretty angry, actually, about that whole thing.

  95. You know, I hate being cheated.

  96. I think it just kind of runs in the family.

  97. And yeah, you know, I was arguing with him.

  98. And the conversation was getting pretty heated.

  99. And he was making up all this stuff.

  100. And yeah, and you know, afterwards, you know, I got out.

  101. I just couldn't even look at him.

  102. I just shook my head.

  103. And, you know, I just wanted to, you know, shake him.

  104. I said, what are you doing?

  105. And it made me think about forgiveness.

  106. Because that's what I was thinking about during the week, right?

  107. And I didn't think about it until later.

  108. But I was reading in Phil Yancey's book about grace, the story of Les Miserables.

  109. Where, you know, right at the beginning, you know, Jean Valjean, the prisoner,

  110. a hardened criminal over 20 years in jail,

  111. goes and he stays at the priest's house and he steals.

  112. And he's treated with kindness and grace to a thief.

  113. He's shown forgiveness and mercy.

  114. And because of that, his whole life is changed and transformed.

  115. And so, yeah, it just made me think, you know,

  116. how difficult it is for even us as people who have experienced grace

  117. to continue to practice grace in the face of what we consider to be injustice.

  118. Or when we feel like we've been wronged in some way.

  119. There's a story of forgiveness that I heard as well one time.

  120. And it goes kind of like this.

  121. There was a husband.

  122. And he was happily married to his wife.

  123. And in a moment of madness,

  124. he committed adultery one night against his wife.

  125. And almost immediately, he regretted the terrible mistake that he'd made.

  126. And he decided to come clean and confess to his wife what he had done.

  127. And not knowing how she would respond,

  128. he forced himself to do so,

  129. stealing himself for what she might say.

  130. Not knowing what she would say.

  131. And her reply was this.

  132. What you have done has really hurt me.

  133. But I love you and I forgive you.

  134. He couldn't believe his ears.

  135. I mean, what could he say?

  136. Was that it?

  137. Could he be forgiven so easily?

  138. Is it that easy to forgive?

  139. In Hosea, we have a story of hurt and forgiveness.

  140. And Hosea has been called the second greatest story of forgiveness in the Bible.

  141. Because it points to the greatest story of forgiveness in the Bible,

  142. which is found in the New Testament.

  143. But in this part of Hosea,

  144. we read about Hosea and Goma.

  145. Goma, a promiscuous woman.

  146. A woman of whoredom.

  147. Who Hosea is told to marry.

  148. And it seems strange to us that God would ask a prophet to do something like this.

  149. But one thing that we need to understand is that the prophets

  150. were God's spokespeople, spokespersons,

  151. in the land of Israel at that time,

  152. and other places as well.

  153. And God sent many prophets to the land.

  154. And as we heard from just a few weeks ago,

  155. when Graham spoke about,

  156. spoke on Amos.

  157. Hosea and Amos were contemporaries.

  158. And the land of Israel

  159. had turned away from God.

  160. They'd actually enjoyed a long period of peace and prosperity,

  161. where riches had flowed into the land,

  162. and the borders had expanded under King Jeroboam.

  163. And in this time, even,

  164. religion was expanding and booming,

  165. but it was a religion which was not focused on God.

  166. Instead, it was what they call syncretistic.

  167. It was mixed in with the religions of all the other lands and places around them.

  168. And so,

  169. God sees this,

  170. and His heart is torn apart,

  171. broken,

  172. because He sees a people

  173. who have deserted Him

  174. and gone to run other,

  175. other idols,

  176. run after other idols.

  177. And so,

  178. the prophets

  179. embody

  180. in themselves

  181. God's message

  182. within them.

  183. To be a prophet,

  184. to be a spokesman,

  185. like the old children of prophets,

  186. is to

  187. almost identify with God

  188. in such a way

  189. that you feel what God feels.

  190. If you want to know

  191. what it's like to be an altarsome prophet,

  192. you can read the words of Jeremiah.

  193. And he said,

  194. he talked about it like this,

  195. if I say,

  196. I will not mention His word

  197. or speak any more in His name,

  198. His word is in my heart

  199. like a fire,

  200. a fire shut up in my bones.

  201. I am weary of holding it in.

  202. Indeed,

  203. I cannot.

  204. God's word is like a fire

  205. inside of the prophets,

  206. and it must come out.

  207. And in some cases,

  208. the prophets,

  209. even in their,

  210. not just their words,

  211. but their physical lives,

  212. embodied the message of God,

  213. embodied the heart of God,

  214. the feelings of God,

  215. communicating

  216. what God wanted to communicate

  217. to His people.

  218. Hosea is one of those prophets.

  219. And so he is commanded

  220. to take

  221. a wife of Hortum

  222. and children of Hortum,

  223. and

  224. he commanded to do so

  225. because Israel

  226. has left

  227. their God.

  228. has become

  229. unfaithful.

  230. And so,

  231. Hosea

  232. marries,

  233. it says,

  234. Goma.

  235. And

  236. they get married

  237. and

  238. they have a child

  239. together.

  240. And after this child

  241. is born

  242. and some more children

  243. are born,

  244. Goma leaves

  245. Hosea

  246. for a new man,

  247. a new life.

  248. and God

  249. tells Hosea

  250. as well

  251. the names

  252. of the children

  253. that He

  254. is to name them.

  255. And they are not

  256. pretty names.

  257. Jezreel,

  258. the first one,

  259. it's just the name

  260. of the land

  261. that

  262. they were in.

  263. But judgment

  264. was coming

  265. to that land

  266. and that

  267. was why

  268. the name

  269. was given.

  270. The next ones

  271. were named

  272. perhaps in

  273. accordance

  274. with the fact

  275. that they may

  276. not have been

  277. Hosea's children

  278. at all.

  279. No mercy

  280. and not my

  281. people.

  282. And God

  283. said that He

  284. would no longer

  285. show mercy

  286. to the house

  287. of Israel

  288. and that

  289. they would

  290. not be

  291. His people

  292. anymore.

  293. Because Israel

  294. were the people

  295. of God

  296. chosen by God

  297. and they were

  298. to be His people

  299. and He was

  300. to be their God

  301. but they had

  302. wandered away,

  303. had walked away,

  304. had deserted Him.

  305. And so God

  306. in effect

  307. broke the covenant

  308. which He had

  309. with Israel,

  310. threw it aside

  311. and said

  312. you are not

  313. my people

  314. and I will not

  315. be your God.

  316. Well,

  317. Gomer

  318. leaves,

  319. as I said,

  320. Hosea

  321. for a new man,

  322. a new life

  323. and yet

  324. this new life

  325. doesn't seem

  326. to work out

  327. in the way

  328. that she had

  329. intended

  330. because she

  331. sinks lower

  332. in society

  333. and eventually

  334. hits rock bottom

  335. when she is

  336. placed for sale

  337. on the slave

  338. market.

  339. She is reduced

  340. to nothing,

  341. owning nothing,

  342. in fact not even

  343. herself.

  344. she is owned

  345. by another,

  346. the slave traders.

  347. And this sad story

  348. could have just

  349. ended here

  350. except that in

  351. chapter 3

  352. we're told

  353. that God

  354. tells Hosea

  355. to go

  356. and love her

  357. again.

  358. We're not told

  359. what Hosea

  360. thought about

  361. kind of such

  362. an instruction

  363. but we can

  364. imagine.

  365. I think of

  366. a friend

  367. who

  368. was convinced

  369. that,

  370. or who

  371. suspected

  372. that his wife

  373. was emotionally

  374. unfaithful

  375. to him

  376. and his fury

  377. knew no bounds

  378. as he suspected

  379. everybody.

  380. what were Hosea's

  381. options?

  382. Well,

  383. he could have

  384. just left her

  385. there,

  386. seen her at

  387. the slave auction

  388. market,

  389. left her to

  390. her own,

  391. yeah,

  392. to her fate,

  393. laughed at her,

  394. told her that

  395. she deserved it.

  396. or he could

  397. have taken

  398. her in,

  399. brought her

  400. as a slave

  401. and brought her

  402. in his house,

  403. under his house

  404. and exacted

  405. his revenge

  406. by taking

  407. a new wife,

  408. which he was

  409. entitled to do

  410. under Jewish law

  411. and bring her

  412. in as a slave

  413. under new

  414. management,

  415. as it were,

  416. so that she

  417. could see

  418. what she

  419. once had

  420. and missed

  421. out on.

  422. But that is

  423. not what God

  424. told him to do.

  425. God told Hosea

  426. to love her

  427. again.

  428. And so

  429. he does so.

  430. And you can

  431. imagine what

  432. his friends

  433. and neighbours

  434. have said

  435. and thought

  436. about all this

  437. as they were

  438. watching this

  439. drama of

  440. this prophet

  441. and his wife

  442. being enacted

  443. out in

  444. Israelite society.

  445. perhaps they

  446. would have

  447. said,

  448. Hosea,

  449. you're crazy.

  450. She doesn't

  451. deserve your

  452. love.

  453. She doesn't

  454. deserve

  455. your

  456. payment.

  457. Why would

  458. you pay

  459. to take

  460. back

  461. this woman?

  462. Don't you

  463. remember?

  464. She left you.

  465. She took up

  466. with someone

  467. else.

  468. She betrayed

  469. you.

  470. She doesn't

  471. deserve

  472. your love.

  473. Yet Hosea

  474. obeys God.

  475. And he

  476. goes and

  477. talks to her

  478. and rescues

  479. her and

  480. gathers the

  481. resources necessary

  482. to pay the

  483. price for

  484. her freedom.

  485. him.

  486. And when

  487. he talks to

  488. her, he

  489. doesn't just

  490. bring her

  491. in as a

  492. slave.

  493. No.

  494. He restores

  495. her to a

  496. position as

  497. a wife.

  498. She's fully

  499. restored,

  500. forgiven,

  501. and he

  502. resets as

  503. well their

  504. marriage

  505. commitment.

  506. He says

  507. to her,

  508. you must

  509. dwell as

  510. mine for

  511. many days.

  512. You shall

  513. not play

  514. the war or

  515. belong to

  516. another man.

  517. So will

  518. I also

  519. be to

  520. you.

  521. It's a

  522. recommitment

  523. of their

  524. marriage.

  525. That once

  526. again, she

  527. will be

  528. committed to

  529. him and

  530. he will be

  531. committed to

  532. her for

  533. life.

  534. Fully

  535. restored,

  536. their broken

  537. marriage.

  538. It's a

  539. high price

  540. to pay

  541. as well.

  542. The

  543. resources that

  544. were needed

  545. to buy

  546. her back,

  547. the

  548. humiliation

  549. that he

  550. would have

  551. experienced,

  552. that they

  553. both would

  554. have

  555. experienced

  556. from

  557. friends,

  558. family,

  559. neighbours,

  560. society.

  561. The hurt

  562. and anger

  563. that Hosea

  564. would have

  565. had to

  566. either bury

  567. or just

  568. kind of

  569. assume

  570. within him.

  571. and the

  572. prophet was

  573. reenacting

  574. the broken

  575. covenant

  576. relationship

  577. between God

  578. and Israel.

  579. We read

  580. chapter 1 and

  581. chapter 3,

  582. but between

  583. them is

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  584. chapter 2,

  585. where God

  586. addresses Israel

  587. directly and

  588. speaks to

  589. her and he

  590. says to her

  591. at that point

  592. that she

  593. is like

  594. this woman,

  595. an adulterous

  596. woman,

  597. and they

  598. have become

  599. an adulterous

  600. people.

  601. As it

  602. says,

  603. upon her

  604. children I

  605. will have

  606. no mercy

  607. because they

  608. are children

  609. of

  610. wardom.

  611. Their

  612. mother has

  613. played the

  614. war.

  615. She

  616. who conceived

  617. them has

  618. acted

  619. shamefully,

  620. for she

  621. said,

  622. I will go

  623. after my

  624. lovers who

  625. give me my

  626. bread and

  627. my water,

  628. my will

  629. and my

  630. flax,

  631. my oil

  632. and my

  633. drink.

  634. She

  635. shall

  636. pursue

  637. her

  638. lovers,

  639. but not

  640. overtake

  641. them.

  642. She

  643. shall

  644. seek

  645. them,

  646. but not

  647. find

  648. them.

  649. She

  650. did not

  651. know that

  652. it was

  653. I who

  654. gave her

  655. the grain,

  656. the wine,

  657. the oil,

  658. who lavished

  659. on her

  660. the silver

  661. and gold,

  662. which they

  663. used for

  664. bail.

  665. Therefore

  666. I will

  667. take back

  668. my grain

  669. in its

  670. time and

  671. my wine

  672. in its

  673. season.

  674. I will

  675. take away

  676. my will

  677. and my

  678. flax,

  679. which

  680. were to

  681. cover her

  682. nakedness.

  683. The

  684. people of

  685. Israel

  686. were like

  687. Gomer.

  688. And the

  689. prophet and

  690. his wife

  691. were just

  692. kind of like

  693. a microcosm,

  694. an acted

  695. story of

  696. the wider

  697. story that

  698. all of

  699. Israel shared.

  700. And when

  701. people looked

  702. in and

  703. asked why

  704. is this

  705. happening to

  706. this prophet,

  707. this man of

  708. God,

  709. then they

  710. would know

  711. that this is

  712. because the

  713. finger was

  714. pointed right

  715. back at

  716. them.

  717. You,

  718. this is what

  719. you have

  720. done.

  721. This is

  722. who you

  723. are,

  724. are people

  725. who have

  726. forsaken

  727. God.

  728. And to

  729. read Hosea,

  730. and we

  731. don't have

  732. time,

  733. obviously,

  734. to read

  735. the whole

  736. book,

  737. it's 12,

  738. 14 chapters,

  739. something like

  740. that.

  741. To read

  742. the whole

  743. book of

  744. Hosea is

  745. to see,

  746. to get a

  747. peek into

  748. the heart

  749. of God,

  750. possibly more

  751. than any

  752. other book.

  753. And we

  754. see inside

  755. the heart

  756. of God

  757. is pain.

  758. is broken

  759. as his

  760. heart is

  761. broken

  762. over his

  763. people.

  764. In

  765. chapter 4,

  766. verse 1,

  767. I mean,

  768. if you're

  769. following along,

  770. if you've got

  771. phones and so

  772. on,

  773. I'll be

  774. skipping around

  775. and so on,

  776. but just

  777. for this

  778. little while.

  779. But in

  780. chapter 4,

  781. verse 1,

  782. God says,

  783. hear this

  784. word,

  785. hear the

  786. word of

  787. the Lord,

  788. O children

  789. of Israel,

  790. for the

  791. Lord has

  792. a controversy

  793. with the

  794. inhabitants

  795. of the

  796. land.

  797. There is

  798. no faithfulness

  799. or steadfast

  800. love and

  801. no knowledge

  802. of God

  803. in the

  804. land.

  805. There is

  806. swearing,

  807. lying,

  808. murder,

  809. stealing,

  810. and committing

  811. adultery.

  812. They break

  813. all bounds,

  814. and bloodshed

  815. follows

  816. bloodshed.

  817. This is the

  818. land of

  819. Israel,

  820. the chosen

  821. people of

  822. God,

  823. where there

  824. is no

  825. knowledge of

  826. God in

  827. the land,

  828. no faithfulness,

  829. no steadfast

  830. love,

  831. no grace.

  832. In

  833. chapter 5,

  834. God says,

  835. their deeds

  836. do not

  837. permit them

  838. to return

  839. to their

  840. God,

  841. for the

  842. spirit of

  843. wardom is

  844. within them,

  845. and they

  846. know not

  847. the Lord.

  848. And in

  849. chapter 6,

  850. God kind of

  851. pleads with

  852. them.

  853. He says,

  854. in chapter 6,

  855. verse 4,

  856. what shall I

  857. do with

  858. you,

  859. O Ephraim?

  860. What shall I

  861. do with

  862. you,

  863. O Judah?

  864. Your love

  865. is like

  866. the morning

  867. mist,

  868. like the

  869. dew that

  870. goes away

  871. early,

  872. goes early

  873. away.

  874. It's like

  875. somebody who

  876. turns around

  877. and loves

  878. someone,

  879. only to

  880. change their

  881. mind,

  882. and then

  883. come back

  884. again,

  885. and then

  886. change their

  887. mind,

  888. and then

  889. come back

  890. again.

  891. And that

  892. was the

  893. whole

  894. history

  895. of Israel,

  896. right from

  897. the beginning.

  898. Even when

  899. God saved

  900. them out of

  901. Egypt,

  902. and they

  903. saw with

  904. their very

  905. own eyes

  906. what God

  907. had done

  908. for them,

  909. rescuing

  910. them with

  911. His mighty

  912. hand,

  913. His power.

  914. And yet,

  915. 20,

  916. 40 days

  917. later,

  918. they're off

  919. worshipping

  920. the golden

  921. calves.

  922. They're

  923. complaining,

  924. they're

  925. forgetting

  926. what God

  927. has done

  928. for them.

  929. and that

  930. cycle

  931. continues

  932. on as

  933. they

  934. continue

  935. to forget

  936. God in

  937. one generation,

  938. cry out for

  939. mercy,

  940. and God

  941. comes and

  942. rescues them

  943. again.

  944. And then

  945. they forget

  946. God in

  947. the next

  948. generation,

  949. and they

  950. suffer,

  951. and they

  952. cry out for

  953. mercy,

  954. and God

  955. comes and

  956. rescues

  957. them again,

  958. and they

  959. forget again.

  960. And this

  961. cycle just

  962. continues on,

  963. and God

  964. says,

  965. your love

  966. is like

  967. the morning

  968. mist.

  969. It's

  970. there for a

  971. while,

  972. and then it

  973. just evaporates.

  974. like trying

  975. to love

  976. a prostitute

  977. who continues

  978. to have

  979. her eyes

  980. set on

  981. others.

  982. Hosea

  983. changes the

  984. metaphor a

  985. little bit

  986. in chapter

  987. 11,

  988. when God

  989. treats

  990. Israel like

  991. a son.

  992. He says,

  993. when Israel

  994. was a

  995. child,

  996. I loved

  997. him,

  998. and out

  999. of Egypt

  1000. I called

  1001. my son.

  1002. The more

  1003. they were

  1004. called,

  1005. the more

  1006. they went

  1007. away,

  1008. they kept

  1009. sacrificing

  1010. to the

  1011. bales,

  1012. and burning

  1013. offerings

  1014. to idols.

  1015. I don't

  1016. know if

  1017. you've ever

  1018. experienced

  1019. a relationship

  1020. like that.

  1021. Family

  1022. member,

  1023. or someone

  1024. where,

  1025. a friend,

  1026. where the

  1027. more that

  1028. you try

  1029. and reach

  1030. out to

  1031. them,

  1032. the more

  1033. they draw

  1034. away,

  1035. and they

  1036. will not

  1037. be reached.

  1038. like

  1039. Hosea's

  1040. wife,

  1041. the people

  1042. of Israel

  1043. through their

  1044. adultery

  1045. violated

  1046. their marriage

  1047. covenant with

  1048. God again

  1049. and again

  1050. and again

  1051. until there

  1052. was nothing

  1053. left.

  1054. And so

  1055. what can

  1056. God do

  1057. with such

  1058. a people?

  1059. God will

  1060. end,

  1061. this is why

  1062. God declared

  1063. that he

  1064. will end

  1065. that covenant,

  1066. that they

  1067. will not be

  1068. his people

  1069. any longer

  1070. and he

  1071. will no

  1072. longer have

  1073. mercy upon

  1074. them to

  1075. forgive them.

  1076. call her

  1077. name no

  1078. mercy for

  1079. I will no

  1080. longer have

  1081. mercy on

  1082. the house

  1083. of Israel

  1084. to forgive

  1085. them at

  1086. all.

  1087. And

  1088. the son,

  1089. the Lord

  1090. said,

  1091. call his

  1092. name not

  1093. my people

  1094. for you

  1095. are not

  1096. my people

  1097. and I

  1098. am not

  1099. your God.

  1100. Our

  1101. people that

  1102. have abandoned

  1103. their God

  1104. are in

  1105. turn abandoned

  1106. by God.

  1107. And if that

  1108. was the end

  1109. of the story,

  1110. well,

  1111. that would

  1112. be it.

  1113. There

  1114. wouldn't be

  1115. any more

  1116. Israel.

  1117. There

  1118. wouldn't

  1119. be people

  1120. of God

  1121. at all.

  1122. But it's

  1123. not the

  1124. end.

  1125. And

  1126. again,

  1127. in this

  1128. book,

  1129. you see

  1130. the dilemma

  1131. in the

  1132. heart of

  1133. God.

  1134. He says,

  1135. how can I

  1136. give you

  1137. up,

  1138. Ephraim?

  1139. How can I

  1140. give you

  1141. up,

  1142. Israel?

  1143. And he

  1144. says,

  1145. I can't.

  1146. I can't

  1147. give you

  1148. up.

  1149. And so

  1150. even

  1151. just in

  1152. chapter 2,

  1153. a little

  1154. bit before

  1155. we got

  1156. to chapter

  1157. 3,

  1158. he turns

  1159. and he

  1160. says,

  1161. I will

  1162. make for

  1163. them a

  1164. covenant

  1165. on that

  1166. day once

  1167. again.

  1168. And I'm

  1169. going to

  1170. call them

  1171. back.

  1172. I will

  1173. speak

  1174. and

  1175. allure

  1176. Israel.

  1177. He will

  1178. woo her

  1179. back to

  1180. him.

  1181. I will

  1182. betroth you

  1183. to me

  1184. forever.

  1185. I will

  1186. betroth you

  1187. to me

  1188. in righteousness,

  1189. in justice,

  1190. in steadfast love

  1191. and in mercy.

  1192. I will

  1193. betroth you

  1194. to me

  1195. in faithfulness

  1196. and you

  1197. will know

  1198. the Lord.

  1199. I will

  1200. have mercy

  1201. on no

  1202. mercy.

  1203. And I will

  1204. say to not

  1205. my people,

  1206. you are my

  1207. people.

  1208. and he

  1209. shall say,

  1210. you are my

  1211. God.

  1212. The act of

  1213. restoration

  1214. between Hosea

  1215. and Gomer

  1216. in fixing

  1217. what was

  1218. smashed,

  1219. irreparably

  1220. broken,

  1221. in putting it

  1222. back together,

  1223. in restoring

  1224. it,

  1225. is a picture

  1226. of what God

  1227. longed to do

  1228. with the

  1229. house of

  1230. Israel.

  1231. To restore

  1232. them,

  1233. to bring

  1234. them back.

  1235. the people

  1236. who were

  1237. rejected by

  1238. God

  1239. will be

  1240. restored

  1241. once more.

  1242. And yet

  1243. for all

  1244. of these

  1245. words,

  1246. you know,

  1247. the judgments,

  1248. the warnings

  1249. in Amos,

  1250. the call

  1251. to come

  1252. back to

  1253. God

  1254. here in

  1255. Hosea,

  1256. Israel

  1257. never did

  1258. come back

  1259. to God.

  1260. Israel

  1261. had a whole

  1262. string of

  1263. kings,

  1264. I don't

  1265. know how

  1266. many,

  1267. maybe 30,

  1268. 40,

  1269. more,

  1270. and not

  1271. one of

  1272. them.

  1273. followed

  1274. God

  1275. with

  1276. his

  1277. heart,

  1278. all his

  1279. heart,

  1280. not one

  1281. of them.

  1282. And so

  1283. they led

  1284. the people

  1285. astray

  1286. all that

  1287. time.

  1288. And so

  1289. even as

  1290. the kingdom

  1291. ended,

  1292. they continued

  1293. to follow

  1294. other gods.

  1295. And so

  1296. Israel fell

  1297. into ruin

  1298. and were

  1299. conquered

  1300. by Assyria.

  1301. Judah

  1302. remained,

  1303. and yet

  1304. they too

  1305. forsook

  1306. their God

  1307. were led

  1308. into exile

  1309. and then

  1310. returned

  1311. back into

  1312. the land.

  1313. And the

  1314. people of

  1315. Israel

  1316. were intermixed

  1317. with the

  1318. peoples around

  1319. them.

  1320. And so

  1321. they became

  1322. by Jesus'

  1323. day

  1324. the

  1325. Samaritans.

  1326. And they

  1327. were despised

  1328. people by

  1329. the Jews,

  1330. despised as

  1331. those who

  1332. were children

  1333. of adultery.

  1334. They were

  1335. the children

  1336. of these

  1337. early Israelites.

  1338. And they'd

  1339. been mixed

  1340. in with

  1341. the other

  1342. peoples of

  1343. the land.

  1344. And they

  1345. worshipped God

  1346. and they worshipped

  1347. all these other

  1348. idols at the

  1349. same time.

  1350. What about

  1351. us?

  1352. How do we

  1353. read Hosea?

  1354. And what

  1355. about the

  1356. way that

  1357. Jesus comes

  1358. in?

  1359. And the

  1360. way that

  1361. he treated

  1362. Samaritans?

  1363. When he

  1364. went to

  1365. visit a

  1366. Samaritan

  1367. village and

  1368. encountered a

  1369. woman at the

  1370. well who

  1371. was a woman

  1372. who had

  1373. five husbands

  1374. and then was

  1375. living with

  1376. someone who

  1377. was not a

  1378. husband,

  1379. a woman of

  1380. Hortum,

  1381. he called

  1382. her and

  1383. he named

  1384. her and

  1385. all the

  1386. things that

  1387. she'd done

  1388. and he

  1389. forgave her

  1390. and she

  1391. turned around

  1392. and told the

  1393. whole village

  1394. and they

  1395. came out

  1396. and met

  1397. Jesus as

  1398. well.

  1399. And God

  1400. through that

  1401. act or

  1402. in that

  1403. time was

  1404. all of a

  1405. sudden calling

  1406. back this

  1407. broken and

  1408. kind of

  1409. destroyed

  1410. people back

  1411. to himself.

  1412. And so

  1413. what we have

  1414. here is

  1415. this hint

  1416. of what is

  1417. yet to

  1418. come that

  1419. not only

  1420. Israel and

  1421. Samaria but

  1422. all of the

  1423. peoples of

  1424. the world

  1425. would come

  1426. back and be

  1427. restored to

  1428. God.

  1429. As we're

  1430. thinking about

  1431. it today,

  1432. here in

  1433. 21st century

  1434. Hong Kong,

  1435. we might be

  1436. thinking,

  1437. well,

  1438. am I

  1439. Hosea?

  1440. Am I

  1441. Goma?

  1442. Who do I

  1443. identify with

  1444. in this

  1445. story?

  1446. And you

  1447. might be

  1448. tempted to

  1449. identify with

  1450. one or the

  1451. other and

  1452. say, oh,

  1453. if I'm to

  1454. be Hosea,

  1455. then my

  1456. role is to

  1457. try and win

  1458. back those

  1459. relationships.

  1460. Perhaps there's

  1461. been a broken

  1462. marriage and I

  1463. need to fix

  1464. that.

  1465. Or if we

  1466. identify ourselves

  1467. as Goma,

  1468. then we think

  1469. that we're

  1470. the ones

  1471. who are

  1472. the whore.

  1473. And we're

  1474. the ones

  1475. who've

  1476. fallen away

  1477. from God

  1478. and we're

  1479. the ones

  1480. like Israel,

  1481. who are

  1482. like Israel.

  1483. But can I

  1484. suggest that's

  1485. actually not

  1486. the best way

  1487. of reading

  1488. through the

  1489. Old Testament,

  1490. particularly

  1491. through Old

  1492. Testament prophets.

  1493. Because that's

  1494. not what the

  1495. New Testament

  1496. does.

  1497. The New Testament

  1498. doesn't say that

  1499. we are the

  1500. people of Israel.

  1501. It doesn't teach

1502. that we are to be

  1503. identified with

  1504. Israel in that

  1505. way.

  1506. Rather, Paul

  1507. teaches us in

  1508. 1 Corinthians

  1509. that what

  1510. happened to

  1511. the Israelites

  1512. is a warning

  1513. for us.

  1514. That is, we're

  1515. to look at the

  1516. way that God

  1517. dealt with Israel

  1518. and we're to

  1519. learn certain

  1520. things about

  1521. God and

  1522. certain things

  1523. about the

  1524. human heart

  1525. condition.

  1526. And as I

  1527. said before,

  1528. what we learn

  1529. from this

  1530. passage, from

  1531. the book of

  1532. Hosea, is a

  1533. peek into the

  1534. very heart of

  1535. God.

  1536. And what we

  1537. see in God's

  1538. heart is real

  1539. pain.

  1540. And it's

  1541. only when we

  1542. see God's

  1543. pain at a

  1544. people who

  1545. have deserted

  1546. him, at a

  1547. creation that

  1548. has turned

  1549. their back on

  1550. him, even

  1551. though he

  1552. gave us life

  1553. and breath

  1554. and everything.

  1555. It's only when

  1556. we see the

  1557. depths of God's

  1558. pain that we

  1559. can see the

  1560. depths of his

  1561. forgiveness, the

  1562. way he longs to

  1563. reach out to

  1564. us.

  1565. And forgiveness

  1566. forgiveness is

  1567. not without

  1568. cost.

  1569. It's not

  1570. easy.

  1571. Remember the

  1572. story of that

  1573. guy that I

  1574. told you about

  1575. from the

  1576. beginning, who

  1577. was forgiven

  1578. by his wife

  1579. after committing

  1580. adultery against

  1581. her?

  1582. He thought

  1583. that it was so

  1584. easy that he

  1585. could be

  1586. forgiven.

  1587. He almost

  1588. couldn't believe

  1589. it.

  1590. And after the

  1591. affair and his

  1592. confession of it,

  1593. then life just

  1594. seemed to go back

  1595. to normal for

  1596. them.

  1597. And he

  1598. thought,

  1599. oh, that

  1600. was it.

  1601. I got off.

  1602. And it

  1603. seemed like

  1604. everything was

  1605. over until

  1606. one day he

  1607. heard what

  1608. sounded like

  1609. the sound of

  1610. his wife crying.

  1611. And he came

  1612. closer until he

  1613. realized that she

  1614. was crying and

  1615. she was praying

  1616. to God.

  1617. And he heard

  1618. what she was

  1619. saying and she

  1620. was saying,

  1621. oh God,

  1622. please help me

  1623. to forgive him.

  1624. I want to.

  1625. but it's so

  1626. difficult.

  1627. And in

  1628. that moment

  1629. he realized

  1630. what his

  1631. act and

  1632. the forgiveness

  1633. that he had

  1634. received cost

  1635. his wife and

  1636. was costing

  1637. his wife

  1638. daily.

  1639. For him it

  1640. was free,

  1641. but for her

  1642. the emotional

  1643. cost was

  1644. immense.

  1645. for Hosea,

  1646. the price of

  1647. forgiveness was

  1648. high.

  1649. He paid for

  1650. it with his

  1651. own resources,

  1652. with enduring

  1653. disbelief,

  1654. shock,

  1655. and humiliation

  1656. from his

  1657. neighbors,

  1658. and yet to

  1659. swallow his

  1660. own sense of

  1661. injustice,

  1662. injustice,

  1663. hurt,

  1664. and anger

  1665. at his

  1666. wife.

  1667. so it

  1668. is with

  1669. God.

  1670. This is what

  1671. God does

  1672. when he

  1673. forgives us.

  1674. It seems so

  1675. easy for us.

  1676. We confess

  1677. our sin and

  1678. ask and

  1679. receive

  1680. forgiveness

  1681. and grace.

  1682. But for

  1683. God,

  1684. the just

  1685. judge of

  1686. all the

  1687. earth,

  1688. it comes

  1689. at a

  1690. great cost.

  1691. Jesus said

  1692. that the

  1693. Son of

  1694. Man came

  1695. to give

  1696. his life

  1697. as a

  1698. ransom for

  1699. many.

  1700. Can a

  1701. just God

  1702. forgive

  1703. when he

  1704. looks upon

  1705. this world

  1706. and sees

  1707. evil and

  1708. wrongdoing

  1709. and injustice

  1710. and hurt

  1711. and betrayal

  1712. and lying

  1713. and murder

  1714. and adultery

  1715. and cheating

  1716. only by

  1717. bearing

  1718. the pain

  1719. himself.

  1720. Jesus

  1721. Christ came

  1722. as a

  1723. ransom for

  1724. many

  1725. and he

  1726. died

  1727. for our

  1728. spiritual

  1729. adultery.

  1730. This is

  1731. the kind

  1732. of God

  1733. that we

  1734. follow.

  1735. A God

  1736. who

  1737. experiences

  1738. the pain

  1739. of brokenness,

  1740. of broken

  1741. relationships

  1742. and a

  1743. God who

  1744. walks

  1745. through that

  1746. pain and

  1747. embraces even

  1748. more pain

  1749. in order to

  1750. win us

  1751. back.

  1752. Do we

  1753. know this

  1754. God,

  1755. this true

  1756. forgiveness?

  1757. How do we

  1758. receive

  1759. this

  1760. forgiveness?

  1761. True

  1762. forgiveness,

  1763. it can't be

  1764. demanded,

  1765. expected,

  1766. or presumed

  1767. on.

  1768. Can you

  1769. imagine if

  1770. that husband

  1771. had gone

  1772. in and

  1773. demanded

  1774. forgiveness

  1775. from his

  1776. wife for

  1777. what he'd

  1778. done?

  1779. It would

  1780. have been

  1781. thrown in

  1782. his face.

  1783. No,

  1784. true

  1785. forgiveness

  1786. can only

  1787. be received

  1788. with a

  1789. kind of

  1790. a humbled

  1791. awe.

  1792. Like that

  1793. husband,

  1794. who was

  1795. speechless

  1796. forgiveness

  1797. when he

  1798. realized the

  1799. cost of

  1800. forgiveness.

  1801. And he

  1802. could only

  1803. stand there

  1804. and receive

  1805. it in

  1806. humility.

  1807. We receive

  1808. forgiveness as

  1809. well from

  1810. God.

  1811. True

  1812. forgiveness,

  1813. not by

  1814. demanding it

  1815. from him,

  1816. expecting it

  1817. from his

  1818. hand,

  1819. or presuming

  1820. upon it.

  1821. it can only

  1822. be received

  1823. with a kind

  1824. of humbled

  1825. awe as we

  1826. come before

  1827. God realizing

  1828. that this is

  1829. the God

  1830. who made

  1831. us,

  1832. who gave

  1833. us everything,

  1834. who sustains

  1835. us,

  1836. and yet

  1837. who we

  1838. turn our

  1839. back on,

  1840. who we

  1841. engage in

  1842. idolatry

  1843. against,

  1844. who we get

  1845. distracted

  1846. from,

  1847. who is,

  1848. rather than

  1849. being foremost

  1850. in our

  1851. thoughts,

  1852. is often

  1853. last in our

  1854. thoughts,

  1855. and a

  1856. bottom

  1857. priority

  1858. for us.

  1859. True

  1860. forgiveness

  1861. though,

  1862. overcomes

  1863. revenge,

  1864. and spreads

  1865. love,

  1866. peace,

  1867. and redemption.

  1868. But as

  1869. the woman

  1870. who was

  1871. betrayed

  1872. was praying,

  1873. so also

  1874. it is hard

  1875. too for us

  1876. to forgive.

  1877. Because

  1878. forgiveness

  1879. is not

  1880. natural

  1881. for the

  1882. human

  1883. spirit.

  1884. Rather,

  1885. unforgiveness

  1886. is natural.

  1887. And I

  1888. think about

  1889. that taxi

  1890. driver,

  1891. and what

  1892. I wanted

  1893. to do,

  1894. you know,

  1895. to throttle

  1896. him for

  1897. what he'd

  1898. done.

  1899. When I

  1900. think about

  1901. a relative

  1902. of mine

  1903. who is

  1904. old enough

  1905. to remember

  1906. the Japanese

  1907. occupation

  1908. of Hong

  1909. Kong,

  1910. and says

  1911. he would

  1912. never go

  1913. to a

  1914. Japanese

  1915. restaurant,

  1916. and never

  1917. speak to

  1918. a Japanese

  1919. person,

  1920. except to

  1921. curse them.

  1922. Decades

  1923. on.

  1924. When I

  1925. think of

  1926. a pastor's

  1927. wife crying

  1928. at a

  1929. pastor's

  1930. conference,

  1931. as we

  1932. talked about

  1933. anger,

  1934. and forgiveness,

  1935. and she

  1936. was talking

  1937. about hurtful

  1938. relatives,

  1939. who she

  1940. could not

  1941. forgive.

  1942. In this

  1943. book,

  1944. Philip

  1945. Jansi

  1946. writes of

  1947. forgiveness,

  1948. it's called

  1949. What's So

  1950. Amazing

  1951. Around Grace,

  1952. and he

  1953. tells a

  1954. story of

  1955. two peacemakers

  1956. who visited

  1957. a group of

  1958. Polish

  1959. Christians

  1960. ten years

  1961. after the

  1962. end of

  1963. World War

  1964. II.

  1965. They said,

  1966. would you

  1967. be willing

  1968. to meet

  1969. with other

  1970. Christians

  1971. from West

  1972. Germany?

  1973. They want

  1974. to ask

  1975. forgiveness

  1976. for what

  1977. Germany did

  1978. to Poland

  1979. during the

  1980. war,

  1981. and to

  1982. begin to

  1983. build a

  1984. new

  1985. relationship.

  1986. There was

  1987. silence.

  1988. And then

  1989. one Pole

  1990. spoke up.

  1991. What you

  1992. are asking

  1993. is impossible,

  1994. he said.

  1995. Each stone

  1996. of Warsaw

  1997. is soaked

  1998. in Polish

  1999. blood.

  2000. We cannot

  2001. forgive.

  2002. Before the

  2003. group parted,

  2004. they said

  2005. the Lord's

  2006. prayer together.

  2007. When they

  2008. reached the

  2009. words,

  2010. forgive us,

  2011. forgive us

  2012. our sins

  2013. as we

  2014. forgive,

  2015. everybody

  2016. stopped.

  2017. Tension

  2018. swelped

  2019. swelped in

  2020. the

  2021. room,

  2022. and the

  2023. Pole,

  2024. who had

  2025. spoken so

  2026. vehemently,

  2027. said,

  2028. I must

  2029. say yes

  2030. to you.

  2031. I could

  2032. no more

  2033. pray our

  2034. father.

  2035. I could

  2036. no longer

  2037. call myself

  2038. a Christian

  2039. if I

  2040. refuse to

  2041. forgive.

  2042. Humanly

  2043. speaking,

  2044. I cannot

  2045. do it,

  2046. but God

  2047. will give

  2048. us his

  2049. strength.

  2050. Eighteen

  2051. months later,

  2052. the Polish

  2053. and West

  2054. German

  2055. Christians

  2056. met

  2057. together in

  2058. Vienna,

  2059. establishing

  2060. friendships that

  2061. continue to

  2062. this day.

  2063. unforgiveness

  2064. is hard

  2065. because within

  2066. us we

  2067. want justice

  2068. and we

  2069. seek redress

  2070. for the

  2071. hurt that

  2072. has been

  2073. done against

  2074. us.

  2075. See,

  2076. this is like

  2077. Miroslav Rolf,

  2078. who's a

  2079. Croatian

  2080. theologian.

  2081. He writes,

  2082. deep within the

  2083. heart of every

  2084. victim,

  2085. anger swirls up

  2086. against the

  2087. perpetrator,

  2088. rage inflamed by

  2089. unredeemed

  2090. suffering.

  2091. We don't

  2092. pray,

  2093. Father,

  2094. forgive them

  2095. for what they

  2096. do.

  2097. We'd rather

  2098. pray,

  2099. Father,

  2100. forgive them

  2101. not for

  2102. they knew

  2103. exactly what

  2104. they did.

  2105. Forgiveness

  2106. is an

  2107. outrage against

  2108. straight-line,

  2109. dues-paying

  2110. morality.

  2111. If perpetrators

  2112. were repentant,

  2113. then forgiveness

  2114. would come more

  2115. easily, but too

  2116. often they are

  2117. not.

  2118. And so

  2119. victim, both

  2120. victim and

  2121. perpetrator,

  2122. are imprisoned

  2123. in the automatism

  2124. of mutual

  2125. exclusion,

  2126. unable to

  2127. forgive or

  2128. repent,

  2129. united in a

  2130. perverse communion

  2131. of mutual

  2132. hate.

  2133. And the

  2134. trouble with

  2135. revenge is

  2136. that it

  2137. enslaves us.

  2138. And of

  2139. course he's

  2140. talking about

  2141. the genocide

  2142. and of his

  2143. hometown in

  2144. Serbia and

  2145. Yugoslavia,

  2146. back in those

  2147. days in the

  2148. 90s,

  2149. warfare,

  2150. blood feuds

  2151. and genocide,

  2152. the end

  2153. result of

  2154. unforgiveness.

  2155. But it

  2156. takes an

  2157. act of grace

  2158. to break

  2159. into that.

  2160. It takes

  2161. someone to

  2162. take the

  2163. initiative

  2164. to forgive.

  2165. Often we

  2166. think,

  2167. I'll forgive

  2168. if they

  2169. come before

  2170. me and

  2171. are repentant.

  2172. And I

  2173. used to

  2174. think that

  2175. as well.

  2176. And then I

  2177. realized that

  2178. Jesus prayed,

  2179. Father,

  2180. forgive them

  2181. for they do

  2182. not know what

  2183. they are doing

  2184. when he was

  2185. on the cross

  2186. for people

  2187. who had

  2188. certainly not

  2189. repented.

  2190. to forgive

  2191. is divine,

  2192. as they

  2193. say.

  2194. And God's

  2195. correct grace

  2196. teaches us

  2197. to forgive.

  2198. The reason

  2199. why we

  2200. find it

  2201. hard to

  2202. forgive,

  2203. even as

  2204. people who

  2205. have experienced

  2206. forgiveness,

  2207. and I don't

  2208. know if you

  2209. have or not,

  2210. but one of

  2211. the reasons

  2212. we might find

  2213. it hard is

  2214. that we've

  2215. forgotten

  2216. forgiveness.

  2217. We've forgotten

  2218. who we are

  2219. as people of

  2220. God.

  2221. we've

  2222. forgotten

  2223. the forgiveness

  2224. that comes

  2225. to us.

  2226. Like the

  2227. unforgiving

  2228. servant who

  2229. couldn't

  2230. forgive a

  2231. debt,

  2232. even though

  2233. he'd been

  2234. forgiven a

  2235. debt millions

  2236. of times

  2237. greater.

  2238. It reminded

  2239. me of when

  2240. the kids were

  2241. playing and

  2242. they ran

  2243. out of

  2244. water.

  2245. You can't

  2246. drink the

  2247. water in

  2248. Vietnam,

  2249. the tap

  2250. water,

  2251. so you've

  2252. got to

  2253. buy a

  2254. bottle of

  2255. water.

  2256. And so

  2257. they ran

  2258. out of

  2259. water.

  2260. And so

  2261. I had a

  2262. big bottle

  2263. and I

  2264. filled up

  2265. one of

  2266. the kids'

  2267. bottles with

  2268. mine and

  2269. gave it to

  2270. her.

  2271. And she

  2272. took it

  2273. gratefully and

  2274. drank it.

  2275. And then we

  2276. told her,

  2277. share it with

  2278. your sister.

  2279. She said,

  2280. no,

  2281. mine.

  2282. I was like,

  2283. I just gave

  2284. that to you.

  2285. And we

  2286. just looked at

  2287. each other and

  2288. thought,

  2289. that's what

  2290. it's like

  2291. with us

  2292. and God.

  2293. We can't

  2294. forgive this

  2295. thing that

  2296. somebody else

  2297. has done

  2298. towards us.

  2299. And we

  2300. say,

  2301. no,

  2302. that's mine

  2303. that you've

  2304. taken from

  2305. me,

  2306. my hurt

  2307. that I

  2308. can't give

  2309. up.

  2310. And we

  2311. forget God's

  2312. broken heart.

  2313. We forget

  2314. the forgiveness

  2315. that we've

  2316. received.

  2317. No wonder

  2318. Jesus says

  2319. that we should

  2320. pray,

  2321. Father,

  2322. forgive us as

  2323. we forgive

  2324. those who

  2325. have sinned

  2326. against us.

  2327. because if

  2328. we cannot

  2329. forgive others,

  2330. then we

  2331. have forgotten

  2332. the forgiveness

  2333. that was

  2334. ours.

  2335. And if we

  2336. continue to

  2337. forget that

  2338. forgiveness,

  2339. then perhaps

  2340. we're not

  2341. forgiven at

  2342. all.

  2343. Grace is

  2344. the only

  2345. solution

  2346. to ungrace.

  2347. I'm going

  2348. to finish

  2349. with this

  2350. story,

  2351. one final

  2352. story here,

  2353. which illustrates

  2354. this.

  2355. And it's

  2356. about a

  2357. woman who

  2358. had to

  2359. forgive.

  2360. You see,

  2361. and I think

  2362. the names

  2363. have been

  2364. changed,

  2365. but Rebecca,

  2366. in weeks of

  2367. meeting together

  2368. in this small

  2369. group discussion

  2370. regarding

  2371. forgiveness,

  2372. spoke up and

  2373. said that she

  2374. had married a

  2375. pastor who

  2376. was quite well

  2377. known,

  2378. and yet he

  2379. had a dark

  2380. side.

  2381. He would

  2382. visit

  2383. prostitutes

  2384. whenever he

  2385. would go to

  2386. other cities

  2387. to speak.

  2388. And she

  2389. knew about it

  2390. and sometimes

  2391. he would ask

  2392. Rebecca for

  2393. forgiveness and

  2394. sometimes he

  2395. did not.

  2396. And in time,

  2397. he left her

  2398. for another

  2399. woman,

  2400. Julianne.

  2401. Rebecca told

  2402. us how painful

  2403. it was for

  2404. her, a

  2405. pastor's wife,

  2406. to suffer

  2407. this humiliation.

  2408. Some church

  2409. members who

  2410. had respected

  2411. her husband

  2412. treated her as

  2413. if his sexual

  2414. strain had been

  2415. her fault.

  2416. Devastated,

  2417. she found

  2418. herself pulling

  2419. away from

  2420. human contact,

  2421. unable to

  2422. trust another

  2423. person.

  2424. She could never

  2425. put her husband

  2426. out of her

  2427. mind because

  2428. they had

  2429. children and

  2430. she had to

  2431. make contact

  2432. with him to

  2433. arrange

  2434. visitation.

  2435. And she

  2436. had this

  2437. increasing

  2438. sense that

  2439. unless she

  2440. forgave her

  2441. former husband,

  2442. a hard lump

  2443. of revenge would

  2444. be passed on

  2445. to their

  2446. children.

  2447. For months

  2448. she prayed.

  2449. At first her

  2450. prayers seemed

  2451. as vengeful as

  2452. some of the

  2453. psalms.

  2454. She asked

  2455. God to give

  2456. her husband

  2457. what he

  2458. deserved.

  2459. Finally,

  2460. she came to

  2461. the place of

  2462. letting God

  2463. not herself

  2464. determine what

  2465. he deserved.

  2466. One night,

  2467. Rebecca called

  2468. her ex-husband

  2469. and said in a

  2470. shaky, strained

  2471. voice,

  2472. I want you to

  2473. know that I

  2474. forgive you for

  2475. what you've done

  2476. to me and I

  2477. forgive Julianne

  2478. too.

  2479. He laughed

  2480. off her apology.

  2481. I'm willing to

  2482. admit he had done

  2483. anything wrong.

  2484. Despite that,

  2485. the conversation

  2486. helped Rebecca

  2487. get past her

  2488. bitter feelings.

  2489. A few years

  2490. later,

  2491. Rebecca got a

  2492. hysterical phone

  2493. call from

  2494. Julianne,

  2495. the woman who

  2496. had stolen

  2497. her husband.

  2498. She'd been

  2499. attending a

  2500. ministerial

  2501. conference with

  2502. him in

  2503. Minneapolis and

  2504. he'd left the

  2505. hotel room to

  2506. go for a

  2507. walk.

  2508. A few hours

  2509. passed and

  2510. Julianne heard

  2511. from the

  2512. police.

  2513. Her husband

  2514. had been

  2515. picked up for

  2516. soliciting a

  2517. prostitute.

  2518. On the phone

  2519. with Rebecca,

  2520. Julianne was

  2521. sobbing.

  2522. I never

  2523. believed you,

  2524. she said.

  2525. I kept

  2526. telling myself

  2527. that even if

  2528. what you said

  2529. was true,

  2530. he had

  2531. changed.

  2532. And now

  2533. this.

  2534. I feel so

  2535. ashamed and

  2536. hurt and

  2537. guilty.

  2538. I have no

  2539. one on earth

  2540. who can

  2541. understand.

  2542. Then I

  2543. remember the

  2544. night when

  2545. you said you

  2546. had forgiven

  2547. us.

  2548. I thought

  2549. maybe you

  2550. could understand

  2551. what I'm

  2552. going through.

  2553. It's a

  2554. terrible thing

  2555. to ask,

  2556. I know,

  2557. but could I

  2558. come and

  2559. talk to

  2560. you?

  2561. Somehow

  2562. Rebecca found

  2563. the courage

  2564. to invite

  2565. Julianne over

  2566. that same

  2567. evening.

  2568. They sat

  2569. in their

  2570. living room,

  2571. cried

  2572. together,

  2573. shared

  2574. stories of

  2575. betrayal,

  2576. and in

  2577. the end

  2578. prayed

  2579. together.

  2580. Julianne

  2581. now points

  2582. to that

  2583. night as

  2584. the time

  2585. when she

  2586. became a

  2587. Christian.

  2588. Our group

  2589. was hushed

  2590. as Rebecca

  2591. told her

  2592. story.

  2593. She was

  2594. describing

  2595. forgiveness

  2596. not in

  2597. the abstract,

  2598. but in

  2599. the reality

  2600. of the

  2601. rawness,

  2602. of a

  2603. husband,

  2604. steal,

  2605. and

  2606. abandoned

  2607. wife kneeling

  2608. side by

  2609. side on

  2610. a living

  2611. room floor

  2612. praying.

  2613. God

  2614. comes and

  2615. identifies

  2616. with us.

  2617. We don't

  2618. have a

  2619. high priest

  2620. who is

  2621. unable to

  2622. sympathize

  2623. with our

  2624. weaknesses,

  2625. but we

  2626. have one

  2627. who has

  2628. been tempted

  2629. in every

  2630. way,

  2631. just as

  2632. we are,

  2633. and yet

  2634. was without

  2635. sin.

  2636. And yet

  2637. he became

  2638. sin for

  2639. us.

  2640. God

  2641. bridged

  2642. the gap.

  2643. He came

  2644. in and

  2645. forgave us.

  2646. He has

  2647. been there,

  2648. and he

  2649. knows and

  2650. understands.

  2651. And as

  2652. Jesus

  2653. recorded,

  2654. forgiveness

  2655. was not easy

  2656. for Jesus

  2657. either.

  2658. If it is

  2659. possible,

  2660. may this

  2661. cup be

  2662. taken from

  2663. me,

  2664. Jesus

  2665. prayed.

  2666. There was

  2667. no other

  2668. way.

  2669. And yet

  2670. he says,

  2671. in his

  2672. dying moments,

  2673. forgive them,

  2674. all of them,

  2675. the Roman

  2676. soldiers,

  2677. the religious

  2678. leaders,

  2679. the disciples

  2680. who fled

  2681. in darkness,

  2682. you,

  2683. me,

  2684. forgive them,

  2685. for they do

  2686. not know what

  2687. they are doing.

  2688. Let's

  2689. pray.

  2690. Amen.

  2691. Father God,

  2692. we know

  2693. that we

  2694. are a

  2695. people who

  2696. sometimes

  2697. are far

  2698. away from

  2699. you and

  2700. run in the

  2701. opposite

  2702. direction,

  2703. even though

  2704. you hold

  2705. out your

  2706. hands to

  2707. us.

  2708. And we

  2709. might take a

  2710. step forward

  2711. but then fall

  2712. back again.

  2713. And Father,

  2714. I know that in

  2715. my life too,

  2716. I have

  2717. failed to

  2718. continue to

  2719. follow you,

  2720. to seek

  2721. after you.

  2722. Forgive me,

  2723. forgive us.

  2724. Father,

  2725. we ask that

  2726. you would

  2727. help us to

  2728. remember not

  2729. to demand

  2730. or expect

  2731. or presume

  2732. upon your

  2733. forgiveness,

  2734. but to

  2735. receive it

  2736. from you

  2737. with humbled

  2738. awe.

  2739. And we

  2740. thank you

  2741. for this.

  2742. In Jesus'

  2743. name we

  2744. pray.

  2745. Amen.
