  1. Today's scripture comes from the books of John and Galatians.

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. Jesus said, I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their message.

  4. May they all be one as you, Father, are in me and I am in you.

  5. May they also be one in us so the world may believe you sent me.

  6. I have given them the glory you have given me.

  7. May they be one as we are one.

  8. I am in them and you are in me.

  9. May they be made completely one so the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me.

  10. Father, I desire those you have given me to be with me where I am.

  11. Then they will see my glory, which you have given me, because you loved me before the world's foundation.

  12. Righteous Father, the world has not known you.

  13. However, I have known you and these have known that you sent me.

  14. I made your name known to them and will make it known.

  15. So the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.

  16. And in Galatians it says,

  17. I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.

  18. For the flesh desires what is against the Spirit.

  19. And the Spirit desires what is against the flesh.

  20. These are opposed to each other so that you don't do what you want.

  21. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

  22. Now the works of the flesh are obvious.

  23. Sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity, idolatry.

  24. Sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy.

  25. Outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissension, factions.

  26. Envy, drunkenness, carousing and anything similar.

  27. I tell you about these things in advance, as I told you before.

  28. That those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

  29. But the fruit of the Spirit is love.

  30. Joy.

  31. Peace.

  32. Patience.

  33. Kindness.

  34. Goodness.

  35. Faith.

  36. Gentleness.

  37. Self-control.

  38. Against such things there is no law.

  39. Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

  40. Since we live by the Spirit, we must also follow the Spirit.

  41. We must not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

  42. Brothers, if someone is caught in any wrongdoing,

  43. you who are spiritual should restore such a person with a gentle spirit,

  44. watching out for yourselves so you also won't be tempted.

  45. Carry one another's burdens.

  46. In this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ.

  47. For if anyone considers himself to be something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

  48. But each person should examine his own work,

  49. and then he will have a reason for boasting in himself alone,

  50. and not in respect for someone else.

  51. For each person will have to carry his own load.

  52. The one who is taught the message must share all his good things with the teacher.

  53. Don't be deceived.

  54. God is not mocked.

  55. For whatever a man sows, he will also reap.

  56. Because the one who sows to his flesh will reap corruption from the flesh.

  57. But the one who sows in the Spirit will reap eternal life from the Spirit.

  58. So we must not get tired of doing good,

  59. for we will reap at the proper time if we don't give up.

  60. Therefore, as we have opportunity, we must work for the good of all.

  61. Especially for those who belong to the household of faith.

  62. This is the reading of God's Word.

  63. God bless you.

  64. And we've learned that you guys have a unique kind of sense of humor.

  65. And a unique kind of taste in food and language and all these different things.

  66. But speaking of food and language,

  67. I'm going to tell you a joke about three different nationalities.

  68. It goes like this.

  69. There was an Englishman, an Irishman, and an Australian.

  70. And they were working on a building.

  71. And they used to sit up at the top of the building and eat their lunch every day.

  72. And so they'd crack up, open their lunch.

  73. And the Englishman opened his sandwich, his box.

  74. And he had a ham sandwich.

  75. He was like, oh, ham sandwiches again.

  76. If I have another ham sandwich, I'm going to jump off this cliff.

  77. I mean, this building that we're working on.

  78. And then the Irishman, he kind of opened his lunchbox.

  79. And he had tomato sandwiches.

  80. And he said, oh, tomato sandwiches again?

  81. If I have another tomato sandwich, I'm going to jump off this building tomorrow.

  82. And then the Australian said, he opened his sandwich.

  83. And it was like, oh, a Vegemite sandwich.

  84. This is another Vegemite sandwich.

  85. If I have another Vegemite sandwich tomorrow, I'm going to jump off this building.

  86. And then they all go home and have a peaceful night, come back the next morning.

  87. And there they are again, sitting on the scaffolding of the building.

  88. And they open up their lunchboxes.

  89. And what do they get?

  90. Ham, tomato, and Vegemite.

  91. And so the three, as they said, jumped off the building to their death.

  92. And at their...

  93. There's more.

  94. There's more.

  95. It's the end of the joke.

  96. It's Australian humor.

  97. No, no, there's more.

  98. There's more.

  99. At the funeral, the three wives of the three men who knew each other got together.

  100. And they were kind of in tears.

  101. They said they couldn't understand what happened.

  102. And the English wife said, I don't understand.

  103. He loved ham sandwiches.

  104. And the wife of the Irish man said, yeah, I don't understand.

  105. He loved tomato sandwiches.

  106. And the wife of the Australian man said, I don't understand.

  107. He made his own sandwiches.

  108. He's...

  109. So we don't need different Americans or nationalities making fun of Australians,

  110. because we do a good enough job of that on our own.

  111. And that story has nothing to do with the sermon,

  112. except...

  113. Except perhaps that these guys lived in community.

  114. And in fact, they lived and died together.

  115. I want to talk a little bit about different communities that the world has.

  116. So there's...

  117. You know, the communities that you know as you're growing up,

  118. in the playground, at school, in primary school, in high school,

  119. and then in university.

  120. And then there's communities of kind of fellowships,

  121. of post-grads...

  122. Oh, sorry.

  123. Graduate fellowships and working fellowships and things like that.

  124. And the world is organized into different communities.

  125. And of course, on a much bigger scale,

  126. there's the communities of your district, your neighborhood,

  127. your nation, your city.

  128. Those of you who remember...

  129. Or maybe some of you haven't got there yet,

  130. but those of you who remember university days,

  131. you know that there's all these clubs and societies

  132. which people sign up for.

  133. And in my first year at university,

  134. I signed up for like seven or eight clubs

  135. from the debating society to the table tennis society

  136. to all these different groups,

  137. only to realize I didn't have enough time

  138. to get involved in all of them.

  139. But, you know, there's some interesting societies out there.

  140. There's like the Homus Appreciation Society,

  141. one in England,

  142. and the Harry Potter Society.

  143. They're springing up all over campuses.

  144. And when my old church,

  145. this guy, he loved Pokemon cards.

  146. And he had a collection of the toys and all kinds of things.

  147. So when he got to uni,

  148. he started the Pokemon Society,

  149. of which he is now the president.

  150. And one of like four members.

  151. And so maybe we shouldn't be surprised,

  152. or we shouldn't be surprised,

  153. if the atheists would get together

  154. and form a society as well.

  155. And so there's been,

  156. in the news you might have read recently,

  157. an atheist community church,

  158. which started in the UK,

  159. called the Sunday Assembly.

  160. It's a London-based atheist church.

  161. And it has,

  162. since its January launch,

  163. grown in capacity

  164. to having two services

  165. and, you know,

  166. several hundred,

  167. maybe four or five hundred people each.

  168. And so they just announced

  169. a new global missionary tour.

  170. In October and November,

  171. affiliated Sunday Assemblies

  172. will open in 22 cities,

  173. in England,

  174. Ireland,

  175. Scotland,

  176. Canada,

  177. the United States,

  178. and Australia.

  179. I think this is the moment,

  180. the founder said,

  181. when Sunday Assembly

  182. goes from being an interesting phenomenon

  183. to being a truly global movement.

  184. The 3,000% growth rate

  185. we have seen

  186. might make this non-religious assembly

  187. the fastest growing church

  188. in the world.

  189. And the journalist,

  190. who's an atheist himself,

  191. goes on to say that

  192. he likes the idea

  193. of a secular temple

  194. where atheists can enjoy

  195. the benefits

  196. of an idealized traditional church,

  197. a sense of community,

  198. a thought-provoking sermon,

  199. a scheduled period of respite,

  200. easy access

  201. to community service opportunities,

  202. group singing,

  203. an ethos of self-improvement,

  204. free food,

  205. without the singing imposition

  206. of a God.

  207. See, our world is striving

  208. for community

  209. in an alienated,

  210. lonely,

  211. and disconnected world.

  212. Everybody's looking for it,

  213. and everybody seeks it

  214. in the common interest

  215. of the people

  216. that they find

  217. and bind themselves together with.

  218. And yet,

  219. is this the community

  220. that the Christian church

  221. is supposed to be about?

  222. One of the,

  223. an American theologian

  224. called Stanley Harvass

  225. warns about this.

  226. He says,

  227. when people are very detached,

  228. very devoid of purpose

  229. and a coherent worldview,

  230. Christians must be very suspicious

  231. of talk about community.

  232. In a world like ours,

  233. people will be attracted

  234. to communities

  235. that promise them

  236. an easy way out of loneliness,

  237. togetherness based

  238. on common tastes,

  239. racial or ethnic traits,

  240. or mutual self-interest.

  241. There is then little check

  242. on community

  243. becoming as tyrannical

  244. as the individual ego.

  245. Community becomes totalitarian

  246. when its only purpose

  247. is to foster a sense

  248. of belonging

  249. in order to overcome

  250. the fragility

  251. of the lone individual.

  252. What he's saying

  253. is that people

  254. can come together

  255. and they can come to church,

  256. to the Christian church,

  257. to seek community,

  258. but they're coming

  259. simply to satisfy

  260. their own desires,

  261. their own longings,

  262. and that can poison the church.

  263. Dietrich Bonhoeffer,

  264. who was a pastor,

  265. principal of an underground seminary,

  266. an agent of the German resistance,

  267. and eventually killed,

  268. executed by the Nazi regime

  269. in 1945

  270. at the end of World War II,

  271. said this,

  272. The Christian community

  273. is not a spiritual sanatorium.

  274. The person who comes

  275. into a fellowship

  276. because he is running away

  277. from himself

  278. is misusing it

  279. for the sake of diversion,

  280. no matter how spiritual

  281. this diversion may appear.

  282. He is really not seeking

  283. community at all,

  284. but the only distraction

  285. which will allow him

  286. to forget his loneliness

  287. for a brief time,

  288. the very alienation

  289. that creates

  290. the deadly isolation of man.

  291. And in fact, he says,

  292. Let him who cannot be alone

  293. beware of community.

  294. He will only do harm

  295. to himself

  296. and to the community.

  297. Is the community

  298. of the church,

  299. of Christ,

  300. of God here,

  301. simply a place

  302. where people can come

  303. and kind of fill

  304. that gap of loneliness

  305. in their hearts?

  306. Simply a place

  307. where people can come

  308. and connect

  309. and be together

  310. and spend some time

  311. with each other

  312. before going

  313. their separate ways.

  314. Because that seems

  315. to be what community

  316. is all about

  317. in this world.

  318. A place where people

  319. can come,

  320. have shared interests,

  321. spend some time together

  322. laughing and

  323. enjoying each other's company

  324. and then

  325. splitting off again

  326. to do their own thing,

  327. to be their own people.

  328. Is that the kind of community,

  329. community,

  330. a Christian community

  331. should look like?

  332. St. Halva states

  333. that the community life

  334. is not so much

  335. about togetherness

  336. as about the way

  337. of Jesus Christ

  338. with those whom

  339. he calls to himself.

  340. And so we read today

  341. from John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  342. And I don't know

  343. if you have ever

  344. prayed to God

  345. out of the longing

  346. of your heart

  347. and asked him

  348. for things

  349. for yourself

  350. or for your friends

  351. or for those

  352. who you know,

  353. your loved ones.

  354. If you have,

  355. I wonder

  356. if you've ever,

  357. you've ever wondered

  358. what Jesus

  359. would have prayed

  360. for you.

  361. What would be

  362. on his heart

  363. as he thinks

  364. of you,

  365. as he thought

  366. of you?

  367. And what would

  368. he have prayed

  369. for you?

  370. What would he have

  371. prayed to God

  372. on behalf of you?

  373. I think John 17

  374. is a very precious

  375. passage

  376. because there

  377. it tells us

  378. what Jesus

  379. prayed

  380. for us.

  381. See,

  382. in the first part

  383. of the passage

  384. he prays

  385. for himself

  386. and God's glory

  387. to be known,

  388. to be revealed

  389. as he goes

  390. to the place

  391. where God's glory

  392. is going to be revealed

  393. which is the cross.

  394. And then after that

  395. he prays for the disciples,

  396. the believers

  397. that have been given

  398. to him.

  399. And then after that

  400. we come to this passage

  401. where Jesus prays,

  402. he says,

  403. not only for these

  404. disciples

  405. that you've given me

  406. but also for

  407. those who will

  408. believe in me

  409. through their message.

  410. That's us

  411. if we believe in Christ

  412. through their message.

  413. And so

  414. when Jesus prays

  415. for us,

  416. what does he pray for?

  417. What is on his heart?

  418. What does he long

  419. for us to be?

  420. He longs for us

  421. to be united.

  422. You can see that

  423. four times

  424. Jesus repeats that

  425. in his prayer.

  426. He says,

  427. may they all be one.

  428. May they also

  429. be one in us.

  430. May they be one

  431. as we are one.

  432. And may they be made

  433. completely one.

  434. Jesus prays

  435. that we would be

  436. united as one

  437. in Christ,

  438. in him,

  439. together.

  440. And it's not just

  441. a united,

  442. like the United Nations

  443. where people kind of

  444. come together

  445. but it's being united

  446. in someone else.

  447. It's being united

  448. in Christ.

  449. As Jesus says,

  450. you, Father,

  451. are in me

  452. and I am in you.

  453. May they also

  454. be in us.

  455. Think for a second

  456. just what that means.

  457. Jesus is saying

  458. that

  459. we should be

  460. united,

  461. that the church

  462. should be united

  463. as the Father

  464. and the Son

  465. are united,

  466. as Jesus is united

  467. to God.

  468. So if you think about it,

  469. how are the Father

  470. and the Son

  471. united?

  472. Well,

  473. we know that

  474. they were one

  475. in purpose,

  476. in their love

  477. for one another,

  478. in their communion

  479. together,

  480. and,

  481. of course,

  482. in the mission

  483. which Jesus had come

  484. to fulfill,

  485. the mission of Christ.

  486. So then,

  487. let me ask,

  488. what kind of unity

  489. should we have?

  490. We should be one

  491. in purpose,

  492. in love

  493. for one another,

  494. in our communion

  495. together,

  496. and in

  497. the mission

  498. of Christ.

  499. Let me ask you this,

  500. what,

  501. or how close

  502. was Jesus to God?

  503. He says,

  504. you,

  505. the Father,

  506. are in me

  507. and I am in you.

  508. Jesus

  509. and the Father

  510. lived,

  511. you know,

  512. in a mutual

  513. kind of indwelling

  514. with each other.

  515. And Jesus is saying

  516. that that's,

  517. that's what he's

  518. giving to us

  519. as well.

  520. Verse 23,

  521. he says,

  522. I am in them

  523. and you

  524. are in me.

  525. It's a direct

  526. contrast.

  527. In the same way

  528. that God

  529. is in Jesus,

  530. so Jesus

  531. is in us.

  532. And even though

  533. he doesn't mention it here,

  534. we know from

  535. a few chapters before

  536. that Jesus

  537. has promised the Spirit

  538. to come

  539. to his disciples.

  540. and it is through

  541. the Spirit

  542. sent by Jesus

  543. that Jesus

  544. comes to dwell

  545. within us

  546. because the Spirit

  547. takes everything

  548. that belongs

  549. to Jesus

  550. and makes it

  551. known to us.

  552. So,

  553. what that means

  554. is that we

  555. actually share

  556. in the,

  557. in some way

  558. in the common

  559. life of

  560. the Trinity.

  561. what is the purpose

  562. for this

  563. incredible unity,

  564. this

  565. communion

  566. that we share

  567. together?

  568. Well,

  569. the purpose of it,

  570. as Jesus says,

  571. is so that the world

  572. might believe

  573. that you sent me,

  574. that the Father

  575. sent the Son.

  576. He repeats that

  577. three times.

  578. may there be

  579. one in us,

  580. verse 21,

  581. so the world

  582. may believe

  583. you sent me.

  584. And in verse 23,

  585. may they be made

  586. completely one,

  587. so the world

  588. may know

  589. that you have

  590. sent me.

  591. And in verse 25,

  592. these have known

  593. that you sent me.

  594. The purpose

  595. for this unity

  596. that Jesus

  597. prays for

  598. is so that the world

  599. will come to know

  600. and believe

  601. that God

  602. sent Jesus

  603. and that he loves us

  604. as he loved him.

  605. It's also so that

  606. we will see

  607. God's glory

  608. in Jesus

  609. and not just see it,

  610. but reflect it

  611. out.

  612. That we would

  613. be

  614. kind of a light

  615. shining out,

  616. filled with God's glory

  617. to those around us.

  618. It's like

  619. the moon

  620. and we just had

  621. Mid-Owner Festival

  622. and you can see

  623. how large

  624. and magnificent

  625. the moon was.

  626. But of course,

  627. it's not its own light

  628. that it's shining with.

  629. It's shining with

  630. the light of the sun,

  631. reflecting the sun's glory.

  632. The church is like

  633. the moon,

  634. reflecting the glory

  635. of the sun,

  636. the light

  637. that comes from God.

  638. And we reflect it

  639. out into the community.

  640. So Jesus came

  641. in order to bring

  642. into being

  643. a new community,

  644. the community

  645. of the church.

  646. And it's a community

  647. not based on race

  648. or national identity,

  649. but on the shared life

  650. of Jesus himself.

  651. our community life

  652. is brought

  653. into the very

  654. fellowship

  655. of the Trinity.

  656. And

  657. that's the case

  658. so that we would see

  659. God's glory

  660. and bring that glory

  661. to shine

  662. in the world around us.

  663. This is the vision,

  664. the desire,

  665. and the prayer

  666. of Jesus

  667. that Jesus has for us

  668. as the church.

  669. And so when we think

  670. about unity

  671. as a church,

  672. we often look around

  673. out in the world

  674. and think,

  675. oh well,

  676. the church isn't

  677. really unified.

  678. It's,

  679. you know,

  680. fractured,

  681. there's denominations,

  682. there's different

  683. people that don't

  684. get along,

  685. so we need

  686. to work harder

  687. at bringing unity,

  688. some sort of council

  689. to bring people together.

  690. that's how we will

  691. achieve unity.

  692. But Bonhoeffer writes

  693. that

  694. Christian community

  695. is not so much

  696. an ideal to recognize

  697. as a reality,

  698. a reality created

  699. by God in Christ

  700. in which we may

  701. participate.

  702. The ground

  703. and the strength

  704. and the promise

  705. of all our fellowship

  706. is in Jesus Christ

  707. alone.

  708. It's a reality

  709. created by God

  710. in which we can

  711. participate.

  712. what he's saying

  713. is that the unity

  714. of the church

  715. is not dependent

  716. upon an organizational

  717. or a structural unity,

  718. a visible,

  719. a visible,

  720. unified structure

  721. like a Christian

  722. United Nations.

  723. And nor will it

  724. come about

  725. by man-made efforts

  726. through dialogue

  727. and diplomacy

  728. and trying to work

  729. it out like that.

  730. Rather,

  731. it's a unity

  732. that is in each

  733. of us

  734. as Christ dwells

  735. within us

  736. based on the knowledge

  737. that Christ is with us

  738. in the same way

  739. that God the Father

  740. was with Christ.

  741. It's a unity

  742. that we already have

  743. that we can choose

  744. to participate in

  745. and we will

  746. if we want to honor

  747. and bring glory

  748. to the name of Christ.

  749. it is the unity

  750. we possess already.

  751. You see,

  752. look around you

  753. and realize

  754. that Christ

  755. is in

  756. the Christian person

  757. sitting around you

  758. to your left

  759. or to your right

  760. in this room

  761. all around you.

  762. Through the Spirit

  763. we have

  764. the indwelling

  765. of Jesus

  766. within us.

  767. what are some

  768. implications of that?

  769. Well,

  770. if you think of each other

  771. as people

  772. filled with Christ

  773. in us,

  774. what difference

  775. would that make

  776. if you saw yourself

  777. and those around you

  778. this way?

  779. If you think about

  780. all the groups

  781. of people

  782. that we have here

  783. at the church

  784. from you guys

  785. the Nepalese

  786. family

  787. with us

  788. to different types

  789. of students

  790. high school

  791. and university

  792. to grads

  793. and workers

  794. families

  795. all the way

  796. from,

  797. you know,

  798. babies

  799. to people

  800. as young

  801. as Tobin.

  802. See,

  803. all of us

  804. no matter

  805. kind of

  806. what our

  807. stage of life

  808. we have Christ

  809. within us

  810. and if we really

  811. believed,

  812. right,

  813. if you really

  814. understood

  815. and believed

  816. that the Spirit

  817. in you

  818. is the same

  819. as the Spirit

  820. in each one

  821. of us,

  822. would you be able

  823. to dismiss

  824. a fellow Christian

  825. so easily?

  826. If they were

  827. broken,

  828. would you cast

  829. them aside?

  830. If they were

  831. sinful,

  832. would you judge

  833. them unworthy?

  834. If they had

  835. sinned against you

  836. or hurt you

  837. in some way,

  838. would you hold

  839. a grudge

  840. and be unable

  841. to forgive them?

  842. to live

  843. well-ordered

  844. lives

  845. in God's

  846. universe

  847. is to live

  848. in the light

  849. of this

  850. reality,

  851. in accordance

  852. with reality,

  853. to live

  854. truthfully.

  855. That is the

  856. truth

  857. that Jesus

  858. has come

  859. into this

  860. world

  861. in order

  862. to create

  863. for himself

  864. a new

  865. community

  866. of people

  867. centered

  868. around him.

  869. And if

  870. you're not

  871. yet part

  872. of this

  873. community,

  874. then you

  875. should know

  876. that Jesus

  877. wants to

  878. invite you

  879. in.

  880. And one

  881. of the

  882. reasons why

  883. this

  884. community

  885. exists

  886. is so

  887. that people

  888. who are not

  889. part of it

  890. can come

  891. and see

  892. it and

  893. look at it

  894. and see

  895. the glory

  896. of God

  897. revealed

  898. within it.

  899. What would

  900. a church

  901. that truly

  902. lived by

  903. Jesus'

  904. prayer in

  905. John 17

  906. look like?

  907. Well,

  908. that's what

  909. the rest

  910. of the New

  911. Testament,

  912. especially the

  913. epistles,

  914. work through

  915. and spell

  916. out for us.

  917. And so that's

  918. why we read

  919. through that

  920. passage in

  921. Galatians 5

  922. and 6,

  923. which gives

  924. us a kind

  925. of a

  926. road map,

  927. Paul's

  928. road map

  929. to community

  930. life.

  931. And one

  932. of the

  933. things that

  934. Paul continually

  935. says,

  936. not just here

  937. in Galatians,

  938. but in many

  939. of his

  940. letters,

  941. is live

  942. your lives

  943. in accordance

  944. to the

  945. reality that

  946. you already

  947. are.

  948. Be what

  949. you are.

  950. And so

  951. he talks

  952. about walking

  953. by the

  954. Spirit in

  955. Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  956. chapter 5,

  957. being led

  958. by the

  959. Spirit,

  960. and exhibiting

  961. the fruit

  962. of the

  963. Spirit.

  964. And all

  965. these are

  966. ways of

  967. talking about

  968. living that

  969. life,

  970. which comes

  971. about from

  972. having Christ

  973. dwelling within

  974. us,

  975. kind of

  976. willing out

  977. from us,

  978. and the

  979. results of

  980. that.

  981. And he

  982. says,

  983. I say,

  984. walk by

  985. the

  986. Spirit,

  987. you will

  988. not

  989. carry out

  990. the

  991. desires

  992. of the

  993. flesh.

  994. But if

  995. you are

  996. led by

  997. the

  998. Spirit,

  999. you are

  1000. not

  1001. under

  1002. the

  1003. law.

  1004. But the

  1005. fruit of

  1006. the

  1007. Spirit is

  1008. love,

  1009. joy,

  1010. peace,

  1011. patience,

  1012. kindness,

  1013. goodness,

  1014. faith,

  1015. gentleness,

  1016. and self-control.

  1017. When I've

  1018. looked at

  1019. this passage

  1020. before,

  1021. one of the

  1022. questions that

  1023. I ask

  1024. is,

  1025. am I

  1026. growing in

  1027. these areas

  1028. as a

  1029. Christian?

  1030. We often

  1031. like to

  1032. maybe try

  1033. and set

  1034. it up as

  1035. a benchmark

  1036. that we

  1037. have to

  1038. achieve,

  1039. but I

  1040. think a

  1041. better

  1042. question is

  1043. to ask,

  1044. are we

  1045. growing in

  1046. love?

  1047. Are we

  1048. growing in

  1049. joy and

  1050. peace,

  1051. in patience

  1052. towards one

  1053. another,

  1054. in faith,

  1055. in gentleness,

  1056. in self-control,

  1057. all these

  1058. different aspects?

  1059. How am I

  1060. doing compared

  1061. to how I

  1062. was last

  1063. year or

  1064. two years

  1065. ago or

  1066. five years

  1067. ago?

  1068. Because what

  1069. Jesus wants

  1070. from us is

  1071. he wants us

  1072. to continue

  1073. to grow

  1074. in our

  1075. Christ-likeness

  1076. and that's

  1077. what God

  1078. is doing

  1079. in our

  1080. lives.

  1081. So are

  1082. we a

  1083. part of

  1084. what God

  1085. is doing

  1086. in the

  1087. church,

  1088. in the

  1089. world,

  1090. or are

  1091. we walking

  1092. our own

  1093. path?

  1094. Are we

  1095. failing to

  1096. walk by

  1097. the Spirit

  1098. and just

  1099. walking by

  1100. our own

  1101. steps?

  1102. see in

  1103. verse 25

  1104. we read

  1105. these words,

  1106. since we

  1107. live by

  1108. the Spirit

  1109. we must

  1110. also follow

  1111. the Spirit.

  1112. Since we

  1113. already have

  1114. the Spirit

  1115. within us,

  1116. since we

  1117. are alive,

  1118. made alive

  1119. by the

  1120. Spirit of

  1121. Jesus,

  1122. so we

  1123. also must

  1124. follow in

  1125. the Spirit's

  1126. footsteps.

  1127. it's

  1128. sadly

  1129. possible to

  1130. grieve the

  1131. Spirit and

  1132. to have

  1133. such sin in

  1134. our hearts

  1135. and refusal

  1136. to listen to

  1137. God that

  1138. we end up

  1139. walking away

  1140. or walking

  1141. a different

  1142. path to

  1143. the Spirit.

  1144. But verse 25

  1145. says,

  1146. since we live

  1147. by the Spirit,

  1148. we must

  1149. follow the

  1150. Spirit,

  1151. we must

  1152. also follow

  1153. the Spirit.

  1154. We must

  1155. live in

  1156. accordance with

  1157. the reality

  1158. that God

  1159. has given

  1160. to us.

  1161. And that

  1162. means realizing

  1163. that we're

  1164. not in

  1165. competition

  1166. with one

  1167. another,

  1168. for a start.

  1169. That's what

  1170. he says here.

  1171. We mustn't

  1172. become conceited,

  1173. provoking one

  1174. another,

  1175. envying one

  1176. another.

  1177. Since

  1178. coming to

  1179. Hong Kong,

  1180. I've realized

  1181. that it's

  1182. really easy

  1183. to get

  1184. caught up

  1185. in this

  1186. game of

  1187. comparing

  1188. yourself with

  1189. everybody else.

  1190. Everybody's

  1191. comparing because

  1192. everyone's got a

  1193. different job

  1194. with different

  1195. salaries and

  1196. benefits and

  1197. housing and

  1198. all this

  1199. different stuff.

  1200. And in

  1201. some ways,

  1202. this seems

  1203. unavoidable

  1204. because

  1205. everybody

  1206. and their

  1207. circumstances

  1208. differ.

  1209. But Paul

  1210. says,

  1211. don't become

  1212. conceited.

  1213. And I looked

  1214. up conceited,

  1215. and it means

  1216. excessively proud

  1217. of oneself

  1218. or vain.

  1219. See,

  1220. the one who

  1221. is vain must

  1222. continually push

  1223. himself up

  1224. by dragging

  1225. down those

  1226. around them

  1227. that they can

  1228. drag down,

  1229. and those

  1230. that are too

  1231. high,

  1232. well,

  1233. they envy

  1234. them and

  1235. wish they were

  1236. in their

  1237. position or

  1238. wish they

  1239. could pull

  1240. them down.

  1241. But the

  1242. Christian

  1243. community

  1244. should not

  1245. be in

  1246. competition

  1247. with one

  1248. another.

  1249. Instead,

  1250. we are in

  1251. communion with

  1252. one another.

  1253. This person

  1254. whom you are

  1255. looking down

  1256. upon or

  1257. envying is

  1258. God's child

  1259. and has the

  1260. spirit of

  1261. Christ dwelling

  1262. in them.

  1263. And so let

  1264. the spirit that

  1265. is in you

  1266. see the spirit

  1267. that is in

  1268. them,

  1269. and then

  1270. treat them

  1271. as you

  1272. would

  1273. Christ,

  1274. for he

  1275. is the

  1276. one who

  1277. is in

  1278. them.

  1279. Another way

  1280. in which

  1281. the community

  1282. of believers

  1283. kind of

  1284. plays out

  1285. is in

  1286. restoration.

  1287. Verse 6

  1288. of chapter

  1289. 6.

  1290. Brothers,

  1291. if

  1292. chapter 6

  1293. verse 1,

  1294. Brothers,

  1295. if someone

  1296. is caught

  1297. in any

  1298. wrongdoing,

  1299. you who

  1300. are spiritual

  1301. should restore

  1302. such a

  1303. person with

  1304. a gentle

  1305. spirit,

  1306. washing out

  1307. for yourselves

  1308. so that you

  1309. won't also be

  1310. tempted.

  1311. Carry one

  1312. another's

  1313. burdens.

  1314. In this way

  1315. you will

  1316. fulfill the

  1317. law of

  1318. Christ.

  1319. Don't look

  1320. down,

  1321. Paul is

  1322. saying,

  1323. on those

  1324. who are

  1325. weak or

  1326. downtrodden

  1327. or sinful.

  1328. Those who

  1329. are sinned

  1330. should be

  1331. restored gently

  1332. and the

  1333. attitude of

  1334. the restorer

  1335. is one of

  1336. humble fear

  1337. because they

  1338. know that

  1339. they too

  1340. could easily

  1341. be dragged

  1342. down the

  1343. same path.

  1344. We do

  1345. this,

  1346. if we do

  1347. this,

  1348. then we

  1349. carry one

  1350. another's

  1351. burdens

  1352. and we

  1353. live in

  1354. accordance

  1355. to Christ's

  1356. prayer and

  1357. desire for

  1358. the church.

  1359. So we

  1360. see that

  1361. in the

  1362. community

  1363. of God,

  1364. the

  1365. relationships

  1366. within the

  1367. church are

  1368. intertwined

  1369. and we

  1370. are committed

  1371. towards one

  1372. another for

  1373. our good.

  1374. There is a

  1375. solidarity within

  1376. the church.

  1377. If one

  1378. hurts,

  1379. then all

  1380. hurt.

  1381. If one

  1382. falls,

  1383. then all

  1384. are affected.

  1385. want to

  1386. be.

  1387. How about

  1388. this?

  1389. He says,

  1390. modern people

  1391. usually seek

  1392. individuality

  1393. through the

  1394. severance of

  1395. restraints and

  1396. commitments.

  1397. I've got to

  1398. be me.

  1399. I must be

  1400. true to

  1401. myself.

  1402. The more

  1403. we can be

  1404. free of

  1405. parents,

  1406. children,

  1407. spouses,

  1408. duties,

  1409. the more

  1410. free we

  1411. will be

  1412. to be

  1413. ourselves,

  1414. to lay

  1415. hold of

  1416. new and

  1417. exciting

  1418. possibilities.

  1419. Yet,

  1420. what if

  1421. our true

  1422. selves are

  1423. made from

  1424. the materials

  1425. of our

  1426. communal

  1427. life?

  1428. Where is

  1429. there some

  1430. self that

  1431. has not

  1432. been

  1433. communally

  1434. created?

  1435. By

  1436. cutting back

  1437. our

  1438. attachments

  1439. and

  1440. commitments,

  1441. the self

  1442. shrinks

  1443. rather than

  1444. grows.

  1445. So an

  1446. important gift

  1447. the church

  1448. gives us

  1449. is a far

  1450. richer range

  1451. of options,

  1452. commitments,

  1453. duties,

  1454. and troubles

  1455. than we

  1456. would have

  1457. if left

  1458. to our

  1459. own

  1460. devices.

  1461. What he's

  1462. saying is

  1463. that so

  1464. often we

  1465. seek to

  1466. be the

  1467. masters of

  1468. our own

  1469. destiny,

  1470. of our

  1471. own soul.

  1472. And when

  1473. other people

  1474. get in the

  1475. way of

  1476. that,

  1477. then the

  1478. tendency is

  1479. to withdraw

  1480. and to

  1481. be by

  1482. ourselves.

  1483. It's one

  1484. of the

  1485. reasons why

  1486. it seems

  1487. easier for

  1488. people to

  1489. communicate on

  1490. social networking

  1491. through the

  1492. internet and

  1493. media and

  1494. so on than

  1495. in real

  1496. life.

  1497. Because in

  1498. social networking

  1499. you can

  1500. control to

  1501. a large

  1502. extent the

  1503. personality or

  1504. the persona

  1505. that you

  1506. appear to

  1507. be in

  1508. front of

  1509. everybody

  1510. else.

  1511. And as

  1512. you do

  1513. that you

  1514. are interacting

  1515. with other

  1516. people who

  1517. are also

  1518. presenting that

  1519. personality which

  1520. they themselves

  1521. have carefully

  1522. cultivated.

  1523. And so your

  1524. carefully cultivated

  1525. personality is

  1526. interacting with

  1527. their carefully

  1528. cultivated

  1529. personality.

  1530. And then once

  1531. that interaction

  1532. is finished you

  1533. can go back to

  1534. cultivating your

  1535. personality.

  1536. personality.

  1537. It's a kind

  1538. of a fake

  1539. version of

  1540. you interacting

  1541. with fake

  1542. versions of

  1543. everybody else

  1544. that's out

  1545. there.

  1546. But then when

  1547. you meet

  1548. people in

  1549. real life,

  1550. when you

  1551. can't kind

  1552. of press

  1553. backspace and

  1554. erase and

  1555. rewrite that

  1556. sentence that

  1557. you just,

  1558. you can't do

  1559. that when

  1560. you're talking

  1561. with people.

  1562. You actually

  1563. have to think

  1564. about what you

  1565. say.

  1566. Think about the

  1567. other person.

  1568. You might have

  1569. to apologize for

  1570. things that you

  1571. say.

  1572. it's a grating

  1573. and a rubbing

  1574. against each

  1575. other that

  1576. people are

  1577. fleeing from

  1578. into the

  1579. world of

  1580. social networking.

  1581. And if the

  1582. relationships that

  1583. we're in

  1584. seem to cause

  1585. conflict,

  1586. well maybe God

  1587. is using these

  1588. relationships in

  1589. order to show

  1590. up our

  1591. inadequacy,

  1592. our sinfulness,

  1593. where we are

  1594. still lacking.

  1595. And without

  1596. these interactions

  1597. we would never

  1598. grow and

  1599. change.

  1600. The tendency

  1601. is for each

  1602. one of us to

  1603. disconnect and

  1604. withdraw when

  1605. relationships get

  1606. tough.

  1607. But I think

  1608. it's God's way

  1609. to get us to

  1610. see our own

  1611. sinful tendencies

  1612. when we are

  1613. placed next to

  1614. somebody else who

  1615. shines a light

  1616. onto our

  1617. sinfulness.

  1618. Paul Tripp

  1619. has a book

  1620. called

  1621. Relationships,

  1622. A Mess

  1623. Worth Making.

  1624. And he talks

  1625. about messy

  1626. relationships and

  1627. the way that

  1628. humans want to

  1629. retreat from

  1630. it.

  1631. But the

  1632. Word of God

  1633. keeps encouraging

  1634. us to deal

  1635. in the muck and

  1636. the mess of

  1637. human relationships.

  1638. One of the

  1639. things he says

  1640. is the fatal

  1641. flaw of human

  1642. wisdom is that

  1643. you can change

  1644. your relationships

  1645. without needing

  1646. to change

  1647. yourself.

  1648. And he says

  1649. that these

  1650. relationships remind

  1651. us that relational

  1652. pain has divine

  1653. purpose.

  1654. God wants to

  1655. bring us to

  1656. the end of

  1657. ourselves so

  1658. that we would

  1659. see our need

  1660. for a relationship

  1661. with him as

  1662. well as with

  1663. others.

  1664. Even painful

  1665. things we

  1666. experience in

  1667. relationships are

  1668. meant to remind

  1669. us of our need

  1670. for him.

  1671. And he gives

  1672. us an example

  1673. of that as

  1674. well.

  1675. He talks about

  1676. this time,

  1677. he talks about

  1678. like this,

  1679. he says,

  1680. conflict broke

  1681. out between me

  1682. and my wife

  1683. the other day

  1684. in our kitchen.

  1685. I was putting

  1686. dishes in the

  1687. dishwasher and she

  1688. was cooking

  1689. dinner.

  1690. We both got

  1691. in each other's

  1692. way and then

  1693. got sarcastic

  1694. with each other.

  1695. I said,

  1696. I would hate to

  1697. get in your

  1698. way while I

  1699. load the

  1700. dishwasher.

  1701. She replied,

  1702. I would hate

  1703. to get in your

  1704. way while I

  1705. cook dinner.

  1706. What was

  1707. going on?

  1708. Each had a

  1709. desire,

  1710. well I had a

  1711. desire to

  1712. accomplish a

  1713. task and was

  1714. feeling rather

  1715. self-righteous

  1716. about what a

  1717. sacrificial husband

  1718. I was.

  1719. My wife also

  1720. had a desire to

  1721. accomplish a

  1722. task and was

  1723. feeling self-righteous

  1724. about what a

  1725. sacrificial wife

  1726. and mother she

  1727. was.

  1728. Both of our

  1729. desires on the

  1730. surface were good

  1731. desires.

  1732. I wanted to

  1733. help in the

  1734. kitchen and she

  1735. wanted to help

  1736. serve the family

  1737. by cooking

  1738. dinner.

  1739. But these

  1740. desires quickly

  1741. turned from good

  1742. to selfish.

  1743. I wanted to

  1744. serve but it

  1745. had to be on

  1746. my own terms

  1747. and on my

  1748. time schedule.

  1749. My wife wanted

  1750. to serve but she

  1751. wanted to do it

  1752. without any

  1753. distractions.

  1754. The selfishness

  1755. showed itself in

  1756. our self-righteous

  1757. comments.

  1758. We both wanted to

  1759. be recognized for

  1760. our service and

  1761. when that did not

  1762. happen we had

  1763. conflict.

  1764. We divorced our

  1765. service from God's

  1766. glory and the

  1767. other's good and

  1768. turned it into

  1769. self-service.

  1770. I'll serve when

  1771. I want to and

  1772. I want to be

  1773. appreciated when

  1774. I do.

  1775. What tends to

  1776. produce conflict

  1777. in your life?

  1778. What do you

  1779. think God

  1780. typically uses to

  1781. regain our

  1782. affections?

  1783. He says

  1784. ironically he

  1785. uses other

  1786. people.

  1787. That is one of

  1788. the blessings

  1789. of conflict.

  1790. He uses the

  1791. difficult seasons

  1792. in our

  1793. relationship to

  1794. allow us to

  1795. see what we

  1796. typically live

  1797. for besides

  1798. him.

  1799. That was the

  1800. reason for the

  1801. spat between my

  1802. wife and I in

  1803. the kitchen.

  1804. The only way I

  1805. could see that

  1806. sometimes I serve

  1807. others out of

  1808. self-glory and

  1809. self-love was to

  1810. put my wife next

  1811. to me in the

  1812. kitchen.

  1813. This is true of

  1814. all our

  1815. relationships.

  1816. God uses other

  1817. people to

  1818. mysteriously and

  1819. counterintuitively

  1820. rescue us from

  1821. self-glory and

  1822. self-love.

  1823. Why does he do

  1824. that?

  1825. Because he loves

  1826. us more than we

  1827. love ourselves.

  1828. I don't know

  1829. for you if that

  1830. resonated or if

  1831. you've ever kind of

  1832. found yourself in a

  1833. situation where

  1834. you're serving and

  1835. you're kind of

  1836. annoyed because you

  1837. haven't received the

  1838. recognition that you

  1839. think you deserve

  1840. for it.

  1841. That's when service

  1842. turns into self-service.

  1843. When sacrifice

  1844. turns into

  1845. self-glorifying

  1846. look at me

  1847. kind of

  1848. ism.

  1849. Look what I've

  1850. done.

  1851. The real

  1852. motivation for

  1853. what we do

  1854. comes from

  1855. as I said

  1856. knowing that

  1857. Christ is

  1858. within us

  1859. within each

  1860. of us

  1861. and also

  1862. from

  1863. thinking about

  1864. what is coming

  1865. in the future.

  1866. The last two

  1867. verses we read

  1868. out in the

  1869. Galatians passage

  1870. verses 9 and

  1871. 10

  1872. talk about this.

  1873. It says,

  1874. we must not

  1875. get tired of

  1876. doing good

  1877. for we will

  1878. reap

  1879. and we will

  1880. reap eternal

  1881. life as we

  1882. said in the

  1883. previous verse

  1884. at the proper

  1885. time if we

  1886. don't give up.

  1887. Therefore,

  1888. as we have

  1889. opportunity,

  1890. we must work

  1891. for the good

  1892. of all,

  1893. especially for

  1894. those who

  1895. belong to the

  1896. household of

  1897. faith.

  1898. See,

  1899. a Christian

  1900. community is a

  1901. forward-looking

  1902. community.

  1903. It is a

  1904. community of hope

  1905. because of what

  1906. God is building

  1907. in this world,

  1908. because of what

  1909. God is doing

  1910. in the church.

  1911. far from being

  1912. a distraction

  1913. to working

  1914. in this life,

  1915. the hope of

  1916. the resurrection

  1917. is a real

  1918. hope,

  1919. a motivation

  1920. and a driving

  1921. force for

  1922. working for

  1923. good in this

  1924. life.

  1925. Without the

  1926. resurrection

  1927. that teaches

  1928. us that God's

  1929. future is coming,

  1930. that God's life

  1931. is coming into

  1932. this world and

  1933. is already in

  1934. store for us,

  1935. already prepared,

  1936. we would easily

  1937. fall into

  1938. idolatry

  1939. because of our

  1940. workings,

  1941. because of

  1942. what we want

  1943. to build and

  1944. what we want

  1945. to see and

  1946. what we want

  1947. to achieve in

  1948. our lives and

  1949. in the community

  1950. around us.

  1951. Or, if we

  1952. find that the

  1953. community doesn't

  1954. bend our will,

  1955. then we'll be in

  1956. despair and we'll

  1957. be like, oh,

  1958. this is no use.

  1959. We would never be

  1960. able to achieve the

  1961. things that we

  1962. want to achieve.

  1963. But the reason

  1964. why we work for

  1965. the good of all

  1966. and we don't give

  1967. up is because of

  1968. this hope that we

  1969. have, that God

  1970. will remember,

  1971. what we do,

  1972. that we will

  1973. reap eternal

  1974. life at the

  1975. proper time if

  1976. we don't give

  1977. up.

  1978. That's why I

  1979. love Edmund's

  1980. story.

  1981. He talks about

  1982. working with the

  1983. kids and being

  1984. involved and I've

  1985. had the chance to

  1986. see the opportunity

  1987. to be involved

  1988. with that and to

  1989. see that.

  1990. And I love the

  1991. fact that here at

  1992. Watermark there

  1993. are different

  1994. community groups

  1995. who are working

  1996. with different

  1997. organizations,

  1998. whether it's

  1999. Barnabas or

  2000. ICM or

  2001. different ones,

  2002. just to get out

  2003. there and go

  2004. into the community

  2005. because we are

  2006. doing verse 9

  2007. and 10.

  2008. As we have

  2009. opportunity, we

  2010. must work for the

  2011. good of all,

  2012. especially for those

  2013. who belong to the

  2014. household of faith.

  2015. I love that about

  2016. Watermark.

  2017. It's cool.

  2018. But we're not

  2019. always out there in

  2020. the community,

  2021. are we?

  2022. What if we find

  2023. ourselves alone?

  2024. And in the

  2025. times when we

  2026. are not in the

  2027. community of

  2028. believers or if

  2029. we're alone,

  2030. say, with

  2031. non-believers in

  2032. the workplace?

  2033. Bonhoeffer gives

  2034. us some sobering

  2035. thoughts.

  2036. I read some of

  2037. this before, but

  2038. he says again,

  2039. let him who

  2040. cannot be alone

  2041. beware of

  2042. community.

  2043. He will only

  2044. do harm to

  2045. himself and to

  2046. the community.

  2047. Let him who

  2048. is not in

  2049. community beware

  2050. of being alone.

  2051. If you scorn

  2052. the fellowship of

  2053. the brethren, you

  2054. reject the call

  2055. of Jesus Christ.

  2056. Each by itself

  2057. has profound

  2058. perils and

  2059. pitfalls.

  2060. One who wants

  2061. fellowship without

  2062. solitude plunges

  2063. into the void of

  2064. words and feelings,

  2065. and the one who

  2066. seeks solitude

  2067. without fellowship

  2068. perishes in the

  2069. abyss of vanity,

  2070. self-infatuation,

  2071. and despair.

  2072. If you can't

  2073. stand being alone,

  2074. think of Jesus'

  2075. prayer.

  2076. Jesus prayed that

  2077. you would know

  2078. that he is in

  2079. you as the

  2080. Father was in

  2081. him.

  2082. And so you are

  2083. an agent of

  2084. God to do

  2085. good and to

  2086. bring blessing

  2087. to those around

  2088. you, including

  2089. yourself.

  2090. If you fear

  2091. being alone,

  2092. then realize

  2093. that the Spirit

  2094. of God is in

  2095. you and wanting

  2096. you to be a

  2097. blessing to

  2098. those around

  2099. you, even

  2100. to yourself.

  2101. Bonhoeffer has

  2102. one last warning

  2103. for us this

  2104. morning.

  2105. He says,

  2106. it may be that

  2107. Christians,

  2108. notwithstanding

  2109. corporate worship,

  2110. common prayer,

  2111. and all their

  2112. fellowship and

  2113. service may

  2114. still be left

  2115. to their

  2116. loneliness.

  2117. The final

  2118. breakthrough to

  2119. fellowship does

  2120. not occur because

  2121. though they have

  2122. fellowship with one

  2123. another as believers

  2124. and as devout

  2125. people, they do

  2126. not have

  2127. fellowship as the

  2128. undevout, as

  2129. sinners.

  2130. The pious

  2131. fellowship permits

2132. no one to be a

  2133. sinner.

  2134. So everybody must

  2135. conceal his sin from

  2136. himself and from the

  2137. fellowship.

  2138. We dare not be

  2139. sinners.

  2140. Many Christians

  2141. are unthinkably

  2142. horrified when a

  2143. real sinner is

  2144. suddenly discovered

  2145. amongst the

  2146. righteous.

  2147. And so we

  2148. remain alone with

  2149. our sin, living in

  2150. lies and hypocrisy.

  2151. The fact is that

  2152. we are sinners.

  2153. You see, people

  2154. talk about grace

  2155. but can communicate

  2156. legalism if we

  2157. see the church as

  2158. just a place for

  2159. the righteous.

  2160. the holy, the

  2161. with it people,

  2162. those who've got

  2163. it all together

  2164. and not a place

  2165. for sinners, for

  2166. the broken, for

  2167. those who fail.

  2168. But we are all

  2169. sinners.

  2170. And so the only

  2171. way for that kind

  2172. of church to

  2173. continue is if

  2174. everybody conceals

  2175. their sin from

  2176. one another and

  2177. turns up.

  2178. Tim Jester has

  2179. this article which

  2180. talks about

  2181. communities of

  2182. performance and

  2183. communities of

  2184. grace and the

  2185. way that a

  2186. performance-driven

  2187. community can

  2188. drive out grace.

  2189. A performance-driven

  2190. community is one

  2191. where people talk

  2192. about grace but

  2193. communicate legalism,

  2194. where unbelievers

  2195. can't imagine

  2196. themselves as

  2197. Christians, where

  2198. it will drive away

  2199. broken people,

  2200. where the world

  2201. is seen as

  2202. threatening and

  2203. other.

  2204. But a community

  2205. of grace is one

  2206. where people can

  2207. see grace in

  2208. action, where

  2209. unbelievers feel

  2210. like they can

  2211. belong, can

  2212. attract broken

  2213. people, and

  2214. where people are

  2215. loved as fellow

  2216. sinners in need

  2217. of grace.

  2218. believers.

  2219. The gospel is for

  2220. both unbelievers

  2221. and believers.

  2222. I hope this talk

  2223. will be a

  2224. conversation starter

  2225. for you guys.

  2226. As you talk with

  2227. people this week in

  2228. your community

  2229. groups, over

  2230. lunch, family

  2231. meals, and

  2232. coffee, have

  2233. the conversation

  2234. about what

  2235. living as a

  2236. community of

  2237. grace, not a

  2238. community of

  2239. performance, would

  2240. look like.

  2241. Have a conversation

  2242. about how living

  2243. with the reality

  2244. that Christ is in

  2245. you and in your

  2246. fellow Christians

  2247. would change the

  2248. way that you see

  2249. and deal with

  2250. others.

  2251. Have a

  2252. conversation about

  2253. how living as a

  2254. real community of

  2255. Christ, not

  2256. tiring of doing

  2257. good, would show

  2258. the world that

  2259. Christ is from

  2260. God and show

  2261. them his love.

  2262. Let's pray.

  2263. Father, we

  2264. acknowledge and

  2265. are grateful for

  2266. the prayer of

  2267. Jesus for us, for

2268. his love for us, and

  2269. we want to echo

  2270. it today.

  2271. Enable us as

  2272. your people to be

  2273. one as you are

  2274. one in, Father,

  2275. Spirit, and

  2276. Son.

  2277. Help us to

  2278. follow the

  2279. Spirit, since

  2280. we live by the

  2281. Spirit.

  2282. For those that

  2283. don't yet know

  2284. you, we pray

  2285. that our community

  2286. of grace can

  2287. show them your

  2288. love for us as

  2289. we love them.

  2290. Reveal your

  2291. glory to them and

  2292. invite them into

  2293. our fellowship

  2294. together in

  2295. Jesus, whose

  2296. name we pray.

  2297. Amen.

  2298. Amen.

  2299. Amen.

  2300. Amen.

  2301. Amen.

  2302. Amen.

  2303. Amen.

  2304. Amen.

  2305. Amen.

  2306. Amen.

  2307. Amen.

  2308. Amen.

  2309. Amen.

  2310. Amen.

  2311. Amen.

  2312. Amen.

  2313. Amen.

  2314. Amen.

  2315. Amen.

  2316. Amen.

  2317. Amen.

  2318. Amen.

  2319. Amen.
