  1. You know, one of the privileges about being a pastor is just meeting people and seeing God change their lives.

  2. And it's amazing the power of the gospel and what it does in our lives.

  3. And so as I thought about the journey God has a watermark on and the people that he's allowed the church to continue to touch with the message of the gospel,

  4. there's so many stories here.

  5. And I know that Joey here is just one snapshot of so many amazing stories of God changing people.

  6. And so I've asked just Joey to come up.

  7. And she said she just started to get a little nervous, but I think you're great.

  8. And I wanted just to ask you, so Joey and her husband come here.

  9. You saw that they had their baby was dedicated.

  10. Last time we did a baby dedication.

  11. He's a really small guy.

  12. I'm joking.

  13. He's a kickboxer, international kickboxer.

  14. And I just asked Joey to come up in as I think about people God has changed and in families that God is changing.

  15. I just, it's amazing.

  16. So would you share a little bit about yourself and your family?

  17. Well, I'm from South Africa and my husband's from Cameroon and we met here in Hong Kong.

  18. And, you know, it's a joke in our family that we both left Africa and met each other overseas in Asia.

  19. And we have a lot of children.

  20. You must have seen them.

  21. Three.

  22. Joshua, Noah, and Alina.

  23. And we also joke we call them the African village.

  24. So we left Africa to make our own village here in Hong Kong.

  25. And I actually work for West Island School.

  26. This is the school where I'm actually working.

  27. We're at my office.

  28. Welcome.

  29. And Alina is a personal trainer and he does, he competes in kickboxing competitions as well.

  30. I went on just, my kids go, you got to go on YouTube.

  31. And I watched one of his matches there.

  32. I think it lasted like 31 seconds or something like that.

  33. Yes, it's not very long.

  34. He bowed most of the time.

  35. Yeah, yeah.

  36. So as you guys think about your family and your coming here to Watermark, what are some things God has been doing in you lately or in your family?

  37. Do you want to share some of that?

  38. Well, a really big thing that happened this year for our family as such was in April this year, my husband was saved.

  39. In April this year, my husband accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior.

  40. And this was so amazing.

  41. That's okay.

  42. I never cry up here.

  43. I know.

  44. I've noticed.

  45. Why?

  46. You should cry sometime.

  47. I prayed for him for years and I was actually saved when I was a teenager.

  48. And, you know, I just forgot about God and went on with my life.

  49. And I found him here when Alina and I were sort of struggling in our marriage.

  50. And God showed me that I was making him and everything else the most important thing in my life when I should actually make God the most important person in my life.

  51. And he made it so that he brought me literally down to my knees where I really had to come back to church and just spend my focus on him.

  52. And during this time, I was baptized and I was just trying to be an example to my husband.

  53. And, you know, he wasn't interested in going to church or meeting any friends from church.

  54. I mean, even if we had some kind of gathering and I invited him, he was totally against it.

  55. He was like, oh, church people, they are such hypocrites.

  56. And I just continued to pray and pray.

  57. And there were times where I really felt that I couldn't anymore.

  58. I really couldn't anymore.

  59. I felt lonely at the end of myself.

  60. And I just wondered when God was going to save him because I couldn't carry our family anymore.

  61. I felt like I was carrying our family solely with my prayers.

  62. And I thought I was alone.

  63. But in fact, I wasn't.

  64. He really was.

  65. Because our father was really carrying me.

  66. And I didn't know that he was.

  67. Now when I'm sitting here on the stool, I can't believe I sat here for last year's second anniversary back there.

  68. I was pregnant.

  69. I had my other baby.

  70. And I thought, what am I doing here?

  71. I'm so tired.

  72. And my husband isn't here.

  73. He should be here with me, helping me with my children and being in church together.

  74. We should be serving the Lord together.

  75. And that was that major thing that happened to our family.

  76. It changed everything when he became saved.

  77. It was so wonderful.

  78. That's amazing.

  79. Yeah.

  80. I remember just praying with you after church and just sharing your story and just saying,

  81. God, if God is here, then he's in control and he will work, right?

  82. Yes.

  83. I see that now.

  84. It's amazing.

  85. Yeah.

  86. So if you think about this journey, even this last year, what would you say some of the things God's been teaching you about himself or about you?

  87. Myself, I had to definitely change a lot.

  88. I mean, I always thought, yeah, he needs to be saved.

  89. He needs to know the Lord.

  90. But I had to do some major changes as a wife.

  91. And this is hard because, as you can see, I have a very strong personality, a big voice, and a very opinionated.

  92. So I was always, you know, wanting to lead my husband when, in fact, even though he wasn't a Christian who saved, he's still the man of the house.

  93. And my grandfather used to say, there can be only one captain.

  94. And I never understood what he said that when I was a child growing up.

  95. But then I realized afterwards, being a Christian wife or a Christian woman, this is, you know, you need to submit to your husband.

  96. This is a word, a big word that I wasn't able to accept.

  97. But I realized that the Bible teaches you that in your actions, you don't have to speak.

  98. You just, by your actions, your wife can win over your husband.

  99. And somehow, I don't know, maybe that's what happened.

  100. I don't know.

  101. A big thing in this year, also, I've noticed this big change where we pray together at night with our children.

  102. We're reading the children's Bible together with Joshua.

  103. Alina is making Joshua read the Bible, the section of Joshua.

  104. And I was trying to read with Noah, who's two, and he doesn't speak.

  105. So he was pointing and making all kinds of suggestions in his baby language.

  106. But it was just wonderful.

  107. Just that I'm sitting together with my family, and my husband is there, and he's willingly praying with us.

  108. And I remember from the time that he was saved this year, unless he was traveling, he didn't miss a single community group.

  109. I invited him to join our community group.

  110. And he gladly joined, and he hasn't missed a single one.

  111. And I remember one night, I was feeling tired, and I thought, oh, you know what?

  112. Shall we just miss the group tonight?

  113. And no, absolutely not, he says.

  114. We are not missing community group.

  115. I felt so ashamed.

  116. Because I'm usually the one telling him to go to church.

  117. Let's go to church before.

  118. Now he's the one turning the tables on me.

  119. So I thought that was just amazing.

  120. Praise the Lord.

  121. And one thing I used to send him, when he was not saved, I would send Bible scriptures to encourage him, which probably didn't mean anything to him.

  122. He just thought maybe it was annoying.

  123. I don't know.

  124. But now he's sending me Bible scriptures.

  125. So I just praise God and thank him for all these wonderful changes, especially in me.

  126. A big change in me had to be made.

  127. I had to change the way I speak, the way I act, or be just not my personality, but just follow the Bible's instruction of how I needed to be as a woman.

  128. And we have peace in our house.

  129. We have peace in our home.

  130. And it's just wonderful.

  131. I had to change.

  132. And I didn't realize that.

  133. It's hard for South Africans to change, right?

  134. Yeah, yeah.

  135. They're just terrible.

  136. Wow.

  137. Yeah.

  138. Hey, we could talk forever and ever about your story.

  139. It's amazing the blessings that God has done and the changes.

  140. And I just remember so many times you felt like there was no hope and you just were clinging to God, even though you didn't know if he was there.

  141. As you think about this last year or even we're celebrating this third anniversary, what is having the church here?

  142. And I think specifically you have a very amazing community group.

  143. Amazing community group.

  144. Yeah, because we keep telling people.

  145. Join us.

  146. We keep telling people get in community group, get in community group, but people are like, ah.

  147. Oh, yes.

  148. But so what would you say has been a big point of having the church here in your life and then that community group?

  149. That community group has really been, I'm telling you, I've leaned on them.

  150. I cannot imagine not having them in my life.

  151. They are really and truly my brothers and sisters.

  152. I feel like I'm in a family.

  153. I feel like I can call up this one and that one and I don't feel, oh, I'm bothering them in any way.

  154. And it's such a wonderful feeling and it's such a coincidence that I've joined the group because I just couldn't make it to my other group.

  155. And I was pregnant and tired and it was right in Kennedy Town and it was close by to walk and I needed to at least feed my spirit.

  156. And I remember this beautiful email that I got from our community group leader, Mike.

  157. And he wrote this long email saying, I heard that you wanted to join us and we're just really looking forward to meeting you.

  158. Would you like to join us for a coffee or for lunch?

  159. Just let us know when it's convenient for you.

  160. We're happy to meet you.

  161. And I thought, oh, thank God.

  162. I was so lonely.

  163. I was really desperately lonely.

  164. I didn't have any Christian friends.

  165. I had another group, but, you know, people are busy.

  166. It's Hong Kong.

  167. And, you know, you just feel, I just, I don't know.

  168. There wasn't a connection.

  169. And I prayed to God and I said, I cannot anymore.

  170. You want me to continue and I promised you I will never leave you again like you promised you would never leave me.

  171. But this is hard.

  172. I've got, I'm two children, a husband that's not saved.

  173. I'm pregnant.

  174. I just feel exhausted.

  175. And I need friends.

  176. I need a family, a Christian family.

  177. I'm alone here.

  178. I'm far away from my family in South Africa.

  179. Please send me someone.

  180. Please send me friends, Christian friends, if you need, if you want me to continue.

  181. And he sent me Kennedy Town Community Group.

  182. They hounded me.

  183. They wouldn't leave me alone.

  184. Like I won't leave you alone.

  185. All of you come join us.

  186. And it was wonderful.

  187. If they didn't do that, I would have been, I don't know what would have happened to me.

  188. Because, I mean, they, they, the love.

  189. Yeah.

  190. There is so much love there.

  191. And it's not even for, you don't have to force yourself.

  192. You can feel that when you're in that group, people love each other.

  193. We love each other.

  194. And it's such a wonderful, generous, caring.

  195. And this email really touched my heart.

  196. I burst into tears again.

  197. I cried when I read that email where they welcomed me.

  198. And, and, and, um, it was just, it's just really wonderful.

  199. Like when you're in a family and you, your brother and sister, is there something going on?

  200. You haven't seen them for a while.

  201. And you say, hey, where are you?

  202. You keep on calling them.

  203. And that's what they did to me.

  204. And, and it just, I don't know, it just made a huge difference.

  205. And they are the ones who brought me to Watermark Church.

  206. And I haven't looked back since.

  207. Watermark Church, I have to say, has also been, it's like a family year.

  208. I cannot imagine not attending Watermark Church.

  209. I feel like I'm home.

  210. I feel like this is my church.

  211. And this is exactly how you have to feel when you come to church.

  212. Everybody says, hi, how are you?

  213. Welcome.

  214. And there's this genuine love here.

  215. And you can feel the Holy Spirit here.

  216. And I'm just so pleased.

  217. All of this is a testament of how God was just wanting me to hold on so that he could bless me with Watermark and with our community, my community group, and with my brothers and sisters here.

  218. Amen.

  219. Thank you.

  220. That's great.

  221. I'm going to, I'm going to, yeah, that's amazing what God is doing.

  222. I remember one time you told me, God, I feel like this group in this church is like a bulldog.

  223. Exactly.

  224. They've clamped on to me and they're not letting go.

  225. They wouldn't let go of me.

  226. Thank God they didn't.

  227. Thank God.

  228. Can I pray for you guys?

  229. Yeah.

  230. Yeah.

  231. Father, please thank you for what you do in Joey's story, Elena's story of coming back and of finding, you finding him and you opening his eyes to your son.

  232. And just the changes.

  233. And we know that there's always highs and lows and low points.

  234. And we just pray that they would always look back at your faithfulness, as we were just saying, 10,000 reasons.

  235. And they would never doubt your goodness and that you're there, even in the hard and difficult times.

  236. And so I thank you for this dear, precious family.

  237. I pray for their three kiddos, the African tribe.

  238. I pray that they would increase in Hong Kong, maybe not with brothers and sisters, but with friends who would fall in love with Jesus.

  239. And they would plant their own church one day, a South African Hong Kong church.

  240. And so, Father, we just thank you for what you're doing in their life.

  241. And we love you.

  242. And we pray these things in your son Jesus' name.

  243. Amen.

  244. Thank you.

  245. Today's scripture reading comes from the book of Philippians, chapter 1, verses 12 to 30.

    Philippians 1:12–30

  246. Please follow along in your bulletins as we read a portion of this letter from the Apostle Paul.

  247. I want you to know, brothers, that what has happened to me has really served to advance the gospel,

  248. so that it has become known throughout the whole Imperial Guard and to all the rest that my imprisonment is for Christ.

  249. And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment,

  250. are much more bold to speak the word without fear.

  251. Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from goodwill.

  252. The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.

  253. The former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition,

  254. not sincerely, but thinking to afflict me in my imprisonment.

  255. What then?

  256. Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth,

  257. Christ is proclaimed, and in that I rejoice.

  258. Yes, and I will rejoice.

  259. For I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,

  260. this will turn out for my deliverance,

  261. as it is my eager expectation and hope that I will not be at all ashamed,

  262. but that with full courage, now as always,

  263. Christ will be honored in my body,

  264. whether by life or by death.

  265. For to me, to live is Christ, to die is gain.

  266. If I am to live in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me,

  267. yet which I shall choose, I cannot tell.

  268. I am hard-pressed between the two.

  269. My desire is to depart and to be with Christ, for that is far better.

  270. But to remain in the flesh is more necessary on your account.

  271. So convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all,

  272. for your progress and joy in the faith,

  273. so that in me you may have ample cause to glory in Christ Jesus,

  274. because of my coming to you again.

  275. Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ,

  276. so that whether I come and see you or am absent,

  277. I may hear of you, that you are standing firm in one spirit,

  278. with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,

  279. and not frightened in anything by your opponents.

  280. This is a clear sign to them of their destruction,

  281. but of your salvation and that from God.

  282. For it has been granted to you that for the sake of Christ,

  283. you should not only believe in him,

  284. but also suffer for his sake,

  285. engaged in the same conflict that you saw I had,

  286. and now hear that I still have.

  287. This is the reading of God's word.

  288. Good morning, everyone.

  289. Good morning, everyone.

  290. Good morning.

  291. Happy birthday, Watermark.

  292. Happy birthday, Watermark.

  293. Happy birthday.

  294. There we go.

  295. We're waking up now.

  296. My name, if you don't know me,

  297. my name is Eric Scott.

  298. I am the youth guy here,

  299. and as I guess may sort of be a prerequisite for the youth guy job,

  300. I sometimes do crazy and stupid things.

  301. Things that if I thought through them ahead of time,

  302. I would not have done,

  303. but fail to think through them ahead of time

  304. and thus end up doing them.

  305. About three years ago,

  306. I was at a cookout at my friend Alfie's house.

  307. He's on staff here at Watermark,

  308. and his dad came up to me,

  309. and he said,

  310. Eric, I have two questions for you,

  311. one about fitness and one about availability.

  312. Now, as I'm sure you can guess,

  313. he wasn't just asking as a friend

  314. how I'm doing in terms of my fitness level.

  315. No, he had ulterior motives,

  316. and he said to me,

  317. I am signed up for this hike called the Trail Walker.

  318. Some of you know.

  319. The Trail Walker is a 100-kilometer hike

  320. starting in Saikung going to Toon Moon.

  321. You do it in one straight shot,

  322. and you need a team of four,

  323. and his team only had three.

  324. He said,

  325. we want you to be our fourth.

  326. Do you think that you're in good enough shape to do this,

  327. and do you have time to train with us?

  328. I said,

  329. I'm not really sure.

  330. Can I maybe do a trial hike

  331. and see if I can keep up with you guys?

  332. He's like, sure.

  333. I met up with them at Parkview one Saturday morning.

  334. We hiked to Stanley and then back to Quarry Bay.

  335. As we're getting back to Quarry Bay,

  336. I told them,

  337. that's it.

  338. I quit.

  339. I'm done.

  340. Forget about this.

  341. They said,

  342. no, Eric.

  343. You did a great job.

  344. You kept up with us the entire way.

  345. We really think you'd be great on this team.

  346. Somehow convinced me to come back for a second hike.

  347. Then it just never ended.

  348. I ended up being a part of that team.

  349. In preparation for the Trail Walker,

  350. you do a lot of training.

  351. You hike up hills and down hills

  352. and up more hills and down hills.

  353. You go from point A to point B,

  354. but you don't just take a straight line.

  355. You go out and around and up over hills.

  356. Even though A to B is just flat and straight and easy,

  357. you go up and over hills and around

  358. and take the most out-of-the-way direction

  359. that you can to get there

  360. because you've got to get in shape.

  361. You go around and you find clothes that are comfortable.

  362. You try out different clothes combinations

  363. to see what works and doesn't work.

  364. You plan out for the day of the event,

  365. where are we going to eat?

  366. Where are we going to take rests?

  367. Where are we going to change our clothes?

  368. Because you don't want to go 100K in the same clothes.

  369. You switch out to dry stuff along the way.

  370. Finally, after all that training,

  371. after all that preparation,

  372. you show up and it's the day of the Trail Walker.

  373. You've got 100 kilometers to go.

  374. From the moment that that race starts,

  375. your mind is fixed on one goal.

  376. Everything that you do,

  377. everything that you think,

  378. everything that you say

  379. is done with the purpose of reaching that finish line.

  380. At some point, you may feel this burst of energy,

  381. but you don't run on ahead

  382. because you know that you're going to need

  383. to conserve that energy.

  384. You have your eyes fixed on this goal

  385. and you do everything

  386. for the purpose of achieving that one goal.

  387. You press on.

  388. You get tired, but you keep going.

  389. By the time you reach the end of your 100 kilometers,

  390. for some people,

  391. some insane people do it in 11 1⁄2 hours.

  392. You're allowed up to 48.

  393. My group took 26 hours.

  394. By the time you reach the end of your 100 kilometers,

  395. you are sweaty, you are gross,

  396. you are smelly, you are tired, exhausted,

  397. physically and emotionally.

  398. It's as much a mental battle as a physical one.

  399. But you are all of these things

  400. because your goal has not been

  401. to look pretty for the ladies

  402. for the last 100 kilometers.

  403. Your goal has not been to smell pretty for the ladies

  404. for the last 100 kilometers.

  405. Your goal hasn't been to be comfortable.

  406. Your goal has been to reach the finish line.

  407. And you reach that finish line

  408. and you have achieved your goal.

  409. And this single focus that you have

  410. while you're on that trail,

  411. it's something that's relatively short-lived.

  412. It lasts maybe a day, two days.

  413. But for some people,

  414. they live their lives

  415. with this type of singular focus.

  416. And one person in the Bible

  417. who is a very great example

  418. of what it looks like

  419. to live life with this singular focus

  420. is a man named Paul.

  421. For those of you who don't know about Paul,

  422. he started out as someone

  423. whose job it was to go around

  424. and arrest and or kill Christians.

  425. He was on the road one day,

  426. headed to a town called Damascus,

  427. ready to arrest some more Christians,

  428. when all of a sudden,

  429. God appeared to him and said,

  430. why are you persecuting me?

  431. Paul was like,

  432. who is this talking to me?

  433. And the voice says,

  434. I am Jesus who you are persecuting.

  435. And from that day on,

  436. Paul's life was transformed.

  437. From that day on,

  438. Paul trusted in Jesus.

  439. Paul made it his goal

  440. in everything that he did in life

  441. to live for Jesus,

  442. to know Jesus,

  443. to tell people about Jesus.

  444. He traveled around

  445. and he would start churches.

  446. And as he traveled around,

  447. he would write letters

  448. to some of the churches

  449. that he had started before

  450. to keep in touch with them,

  451. check in on how they're doing,

  452. sometimes correct some problems

  453. that were happening

  454. in these churches.

  455. And one of those letters

  456. has been saved in our Bible

  457. as the book of Philippians.

  458. It was written to a church

  459. in a town called Philippi.

  460. That's why they call it the Philippians.

  461. And Philippians is unique

  462. for Paul's letters.

  463. In a lot of Paul's letters,

  464. he writes to the churches

  465. and he says,

  466. you know,

  467. you guys have this major problem.

  468. Here's how to fix it.

  469. With Philippians,

  470. there are some minor issues

  471. at the church,

  472. but in general,

  473. he's writing to them saying,

  474. you guys are doing good.

  475. Keep it going.

  476. Stay strong.

  477. Follow Christ.

  478. Here's how I'm doing.

  479. Thanks for your help

  480. in my ministry.

  481. It's a positive,

  482. encouraging letter

  483. on the whole.

  484. And one theme

  485. that comes out

  486. again and again

  487. and again and again

  488. throughout the book

  489. of Philippians

  490. is Paul's single focus

  491. in life

  492. on knowing Christ,

  493. on living for Christ

  494. and on making Christ famous

  495. throughout the world.

  496. And so for the next four weeks

  497. here at Watermark,

  498. we are going to be looking

  499. through the book of Philippians,

  500. looking at this single focus

  501. in Paul's life

  502. and we're going to be looking at it

  503. from a number of different angles.

  504. And today,

  505. we're starting out

  506. at the very beginning,

  507. which is a good place to start,

  508. in chapter one.

  509. If we jump in chapter one,

  510. he starts out with a greeting

  511. for his friends.

  512. Here's,

  513. you know,

  514. I'm thankful for you guys.

  515. I love you guys.

  516. And in verse 12,

  517. he starts updating them

  518. on what's going on

  519. in his life at this time.

  520. And that's where

  521. we're going to start out.

  522. He says,

  523. I want you to know,

  524. brothers,

  525. that what has happened to me

  526. has really served

  527. to advance the gospel

  528. so that it has become known

  529. throughout the whole

  530. imperial guard

  531. and to all the rest

  532. that my imprisonment

  533. is for Christ.

  534. And most of the brothers,

  535. having become confident

  536. in the Lord

  537. by my imprisonment,

  538. are much more bold

  539. to speak the word

  540. without fear.

  541. So we see here,

  542. as Paul is writing

  543. this letter to his friends,

  544. he is sitting in prison.

  545. But he doesn't,

  546. he's not just sitting there

  547. wasting away.

  548. He has a single goal in life

  549. of knowing Christ

  550. and making Christ known.

  551. So while he is in prison,

  552. what is he doing?

  553. He's telling everyone

  554. in the prison about Jesus.

  555. This is great irony.

  556. They put Paul in prison

  557. to try and captivate him

  558. and captivate his message,

  559. but in the process,

  560. they actually gave him

  561. a captive audience

  562. who couldn't run away

  563. when he started talking to them.

  564. And Paul is in this prison,

  565. he's talking to the guards,

  566. and he's excited

  567. because through his time in prison,

  568. all of the guards

  569. have gotten to hear about Jesus.

  570. And he's saying,

  571. me being in prison,

  572. that's not a bad thing,

  573. that's a good thing.

  574. Everyone here

  575. has heard about Jesus.

  576. And not only that,

  577. but the other Christians

  578. that are outside the prison,

  579. they heard about me

  580. being put here,

  581. and they have been encouraged

  582. to share their faith as well.

  583. So I don't need to be out there

  584. because everyone else

  585. is out there

  586. and the fact that I'm in here

  587. is making them more excited

  588. about telling everyone else

  589. in their world about Jesus.

  590. He says, yeah,

  591. some of them have good motives,

  592. some have bad motives,

  593. but regardless of the motives,

  594. they're telling their friends

  595. about Jesus.

  596. Jesus is being made famous

  597. and in that,

  598. I will rejoice.

  599. Paul has a single focus in life

  600. of knowing Jesus

  601. and making him known.

  602. And because of that single focus,

  603. he is rejoicing

  604. even though he is locked up in prison,

  605. even though he is stuck there

  606. and can't leave,

  607. even though he sees

  608. that this imprisonment

  609. could lead to his death.

  610. As we move forward

  611. in this chapter,

  612. he explicitly states

  613. what this goal in life is.

  614. If you move forward

  615. to chapter,

  616. or verse 19,

  617. he says,

  618. for I know that

  619. through your prayers

  620. and the help of the spirit

  621. of Jesus Christ,

  622. this will turn out

  623. for my deliverance

  624. as it is my eager expectation

  625. and hope

  626. that I will not be at all ashamed,

  627. but with full courage,

  628. now as always,

  629. Christ will be honored

  630. in my body,

  631. whether by life

  632. or by death.

  633. Paul's goal

  634. is to honor Christ

  635. in everything that he does.

  636. As he looks

  637. at his current circumstances,

  638. locked up

  639. in this prison,

  640. he doesn't look around

  641. and say,

  642. I'm uncomfortable.

  643. I'm hungry.

  644. I wish that I could sleep

  645. in my own bed at night

  646. and be free

  647. to go be with my friends.

  648. No, he says,

  649. my goal

  650. is that Jesus

  651. would be made famous

  652. through everything

  653. in my life.

  654. If I live,

  655. I want Jesus

  656. to be made famous

  657. through that.

  658. If I get killed,

  659. I want Jesus

  660. to be made famous

  661. through that.

  662. Regardless of what happens

  663. to me,

  664. regardless of what people

  665. think about me,

  666. if my life

  667. and my death

  668. can make Jesus famous,

  669. that for me is a win.

  670. He continues on

  671. by saying,

  672. for to me,

  673. to live is Christ.

  674. Paul's focus in life

  675. was so single,

  676. so focused,

  677. that if he boiled down

  678. his entire life

  679. to one word,

  680. the word

  681. that he chose

  682. to describe his life

  683. is Christ.

  684. Now,

  685. we live in Hong Kong.

  686. We understand

  687. the concept,

  688. I think most of us

  689. at least,

  690. understand this concept

  691. of having a single

  692. focus in life.

  693. We've got bankers

  694. and lawyers

  695. who will spend

  696. 100 plus hours a week

  697. at the office.

  698. That is a single

  699. focus in life.

  700. A couple months ago,

  701. there was an article

  702. in the South China

  703. Morning Post

  704. about a top banker

  705. in Hong Kong

  706. who had dropped dead

  707. from stress

  708. from overwork.

  709. The article said,

  710. this is actually

  711. something that's happened

  712. a number of times

  713. in the past couple years

  714. in Hong Kong,

  715. that bankers

  716. have just overworked

  717. themselves

  718. to the point

  719. that their bodies

  720. physically cannot

  721. handle it anymore

  722. and they have dropped

  723. dead from stress

  724. from overwork.

  725. And the article

  726. speculated

  727. that banking

  728. in Hong Kong

  729. is more and more

  730. becoming

  731. a test of endurance

  732. not just

  733. in terms of

  734. whether you can

  735. do the job

  736. but in terms

  737. of whether your body

  738. can handle

  739. the stress

  740. of the job.

  741. And the article

  742. was speculating

  743. that more and more

  744. it won't be

  745. a question of

  746. can this person

  747. do the job

  748. but can this person's

  749. body take

  750. the stress

  751. without them

  752. dropping dead

  753. to qualify

  754. whether you can

  755. be a successful

  756. banker in Hong Kong.

  757. Now that type

  758. of a situation

  759. only exists

  760. in a city

  761. where people

  762. live with

  763. a single focus.

  764. The single focus

  765. of being successful

  766. at work

  767. the single focus

  768. of making

  769. lots and lots

  770. of money

  771. the single focus

  772. of being

  773. the best.

  774. We understand

  775. what it looks

  776. like

  777. to live

  778. with a single

  779. focus

  780. but do we

  781. understand

  782. what it looks

  783. like

  784. to live

  785. with a single

  786. focus

  787. on Christ?

  788. For Paul

  789. this meant

  790. that everything

  791. that he did

  792. in life

  793. was done

  794. with the goal

  795. of honoring

  796. Christ.

  797. Every word

  798. that he said

  799. every night

  800. that he spent

  801. in prison

  802. every time

  803. that he got

  804. beaten

  805. for sharing

  806. his faith

  807. every time

  808. that he got

  809. run out

  810. of cities

  811. for sharing

  812. his faith

  813. he did it

  814. with a single

  815. goal.

  816. He didn't look

  817. back in despair

  818. and say

  819. oh I wish

  820. I could have

  821. made more

  822. friends in that

  823. city so I

  824. could have

  825. been more

  826. popular.

  827. No he had

  828. a single

  829. goal.

  830. I want

  831. Jesus to

  832. be made

  833. famous

  834. through my

  835. life.

  836. To live

  837. is Christ

  838. and so in

  839. everything

  840. that I do

  841. that is

  842. what I

  843. want.

  844. What would

  845. it look like

  846. if in our

  847. lives we

  848. could truly

  849. say

  850. to live

  851. is Christ

  852. if we

  853. took the

  854. word Christ

  855. out of

  856. this statement

  857. to live

  858. is

  859. what?

  860. For Paul

  861. he goes

  862. on and

  863. he

  864. strengthens

  865. this

  866. statement

  867. he follows

  868. it up

  869. with another

  870. statement

  871. that I

  872. think is

  873. shocking.

  874. He says

  875. to live

  876. is Christ

  877. and to

  878. die

  879. is gain.

  880. Now I

  881. want to

  882. correct a

  883. possible

  884. misunderstanding

  885. here.

  886. Paul is

  887. not sitting

  888. here in

  889. prison

  890. despairing

  891. oh my

  892. life sucks

  893. so bad

  894. I wish I

  895. could just

  896. be free

  897. from all

  898. the troubles

  899. that are

  900. going on

  901. right now.

  902. death is

  903. gain because

  904. it's a

  905. means of

  906. escape.

  907. That is

  908. not what

  909. Paul is

  910. saying.

  911. And I

  912. know for

  913. some people

  914. in here

  915. right now

  916. it could

  917. be a

  918. tough time

  919. in life

  920. and it

  921. could be

  922. very tempting

  923. to read

  924. this passage

  925. in that

  926. way.

  927. But hear

  928. me that

  929. is not

  930. what Paul

  931. is saying.

  932. And if

  933. you are

  934. going through

  935. a time

  936. like that

  937. where you're

  938. struggling

  939. saying I

  940. don't know

  941. what's going

  942. on in

  943. life I

  944. really wish

  945. I had a

  946. means of

  947. escape.

  948. We have

  949. an amazing

  950. pastoral

  951. care

  952. ministry

  953. here at

  954. Watermark.

  955. And I

  956. would strongly

  957. recommend that

  958. you get in

  959. touch with

  960. them.

  961. The email

  962. address is

  963. in the

  964. bulletin.

  965. It's

  966. care at

  967. watermarkchurch.hk

  968. and we

  969. would love

  970. to get you

  971. connected with

  972. them so

  973. you can

  974. find help.

  975. But that

  976. is not what

  977. Paul is

  978. saying.

  979. Paul is

  980. not saying

  981. I see

  982. death as

  983. a means

  984. of escape.

  985. No,

  986. if you look

  987. at what

  988. he's saying

  989. he's saying

  990. I'm

  991. rejoicing,

  992. I'm

  993. happy,

  994. I'm

  995. excited about

  996. what is

  997. happening in

  998. my life.

  999. To live

  1000. is Christ

  1001. but I

  1002. see death

  1003. as something

  1004. even better

  1005. than that.

  1006. The word

  1007. gain here

  1008. actually means

  1009. getting something,

  1010. attaining something

  1011. that you don't

  1012. already have.

  1013. as Paul looks

  1014. at his life

  1015. he says

  1016. life is

  1017. amazing,

  1018. I'm

  1019. rejoicing,

  1020. Jesus is

  1021. being made

  1022. famous,

  1023. my life

  1024. is

  1025. Christ

  1026. but death

  1027. is gain

  1028. because in

  1029. my death

  1030. I will

  1031. obtain

  1032. something

  1033. that I

  1034. don't yet

  1035. have or

  1036. maybe more

  1037. accurately

  1038. I'll obtain

  1039. more of

  1040. something

  1041. that I

  1042. already

  1043. have.

  1044. See

  1045. Paul's

  1046. statement

  1047. that to

  1048. die is

  1049. gain

  1050. is building

  1051. on his

  1052. statement

  1053. that to

  1054. live is

  1055. Christ

  1056. because to

  1057. live is

  1058. Christ

  1059. and to

  1060. die

  1061. is more

  1062. Christ.

  1063. To die

  1064. is to be

  1065. free from

  1066. the sin

  1067. that separates

  1068. us from

  1069. Christ.

  1070. To die

  1071. is to

  1072. be with

  1073. Christ

  1074. and have

  1075. what we

  1076. have right

  1077. now

  1078. on a

  1079. greater,

  1080. grander,

  1081. more majestic

  1082. scale.

  1083. And that is

  1084. why Paul

  1085. can sit

  1086. there in

  1087. this prison

  1088. and say

  1089. to live

  1090. is Christ

  1091. to die

  1092. is gain

  1093. because he

  1094. sees that

  1095. as a

  1096. hope.

  1097. He sees

  1098. the promise

  1099. of something

  1100. greater.

  1101. As Paul

  1102. says this,

  1103. we have to

  1104. understand that

  1105. this statement

  1106. to die is

  1107. gain is

  1108. deeply,

  1109. deeply rooted

  1110. in Paul's

  1111. belief in

  1112. a literal,

  1113. literal,

  1114. physical

  1115. resurrection

  1116. from the

  1117. dead.

  1118. Paul in

  1119. his teachings

  1120. clearly

  1121. teaches

  1122. that Jesus'

  1123. resurrection,

  1124. physical,

  1125. in a body,

  1126. is the model

  1127. for what

  1128. will happen

  1129. for us

  1130. as Christians

  1131. someday.

  1132. That there

  1133. will be

  1134. a physical

  1135. resurrection.

  1136. That this

  1137. life,

  1138. when we

  1139. die,

  1140. that's

  1141. not the

  1142. end,

  1143. but there's

  1144. more.

  1145. We'll have

  1146. new bodies

  1147. just like

  1148. Jesus.

  1149. We will

  1150. be with

  1151. Jesus.

  1152. We will

  1153. be free

  1154. from the

  1155. sin

  1156. that plagues

  1157. us in

  1158. this life.

  1159. We'll be

  1160. free from

  1161. the suffering

  1162. that plagues

  1163. us in

  1164. this life.

  1165. And Paul

  1166. held on

  1167. to that

  1168. belief,

  1169. held on

  1170. to that

  1171. hope.

  1172. He

  1173. believed

  1174. that when

  1175. he died,

  1176. it would be

  1177. gained

  1178. because he

  1179. would have

  1180. this new

  1181. body.

  1182. He would

  1183. have this

  1184. new

  1185. relationship

  1186. with Jesus.

  1187. For Paul,

  1188. the real

  1189. distinction

  1190. going on

  1191. right here

  1192. is not

  1193. life and

  1194. death.

  1195. It's

  1196. life and

  1197. more

  1198. life.

  1199. It's

  1200. Jesus

  1201. and more

  1202. Jesus.

  1203. And so

  1204. Paul writes

  1205. this letter

  1206. from a

  1207. prison

  1208. with hope

  1209. because he

  1210. sees that

  1211. Jesus is

  1212. so much

  1213. greater

  1214. than anything

  1215. that the

  1216. Romans can

  1217. do to him

  1218. to try and

  1219. stop him

  1220. from spreading

  1221. this message.

  1222. So as I

  1223. looked at

  1224. this passage

  1225. this week

  1226. and I

  1227. thought about

  1228. what would

  1229. this look

  1230. like in

  1231. my life

  1232. if I

  1233. lived with

  1234. this singular

  1235. passion?

  1236. How could

  1237. I live

  1238. with this

  1239. singular

  1240. passion?

  1241. And what

  1242. am I

  1243. supposed to

  1244. do with

  1245. Paul's

  1246. statements

  1247. about this

  1248. singular

  1249. passion?

  1250. It has

  1251. for me

  1252. to do

  1253. and I'm

  1254. excited to

  1255. keep doing

  1256. that.

  1257. But I

  1258. know that I

  1259. have this

  1260. hope that

  1261. someday in

  1262. the future

  1263. it will

  1264. be even

  1265. better.

  1266. And as I

  1267. thought about

  1268. what this

  1269. could look

  1270. like in

  1271. our lives

  1272. I was

  1273. reminded of

  1274. the story

  1275. of one

  1276. of my

  1277. friends

  1278. Justin

  1279. and so

  1280. I've

  1281. asked him

  1282. to come

  1283. share with

  1284. us a

  1285. little bit

  1286. today

  1287. about his

  1288. story.

  1289. the first

  1290. thing I

  1291. asked Justin

  1292. to do

  1293. is I

  1294. asked him

  1295. to take

  1296. this

  1297. statement

  1298. to live

  1299. as Christ

  1300. and to

  1301. die as

  1302. gain

  1303. and to

  1304. cut the

  1305. words

  1306. Christ

  1307. and to

  1308. die

  1309. out of

  1310. that

  1311. statement.

  1312. You have

  1313. a card

  1314. on your

  1315. seat.

  1316. I

  1317. basically

  1318. asked him

  1319. to fill

  1320. in the

  1321. blanks

  1322. on that

  1323. card.

  1324. And

  1325. Justin

  1326. what was

  1327. the answer?

  1328. You can

  1329. sit down

  1330. if you

  1331. want but

  1332. you don't

  1333. have

  1334. to.

  1335. What

  1336. was the

  1337. answer

  1338. that you

  1339. gave for

  1340. that?

  1341. My

  1342. answer

  1343. is to

  1344. leave

  1345. is to

  1346. win

  1347. and

  1348. approval

  1349. is gain.

  1350. And so

  1351. you said

  1352. you filled

  1353. in the

  1354. same words

  1355. for before

  1356. and after

  1357. you became

  1358. a Christian

  1359. right?

  1360. Right.

  1361. But what

  1362. did those

  1363. words mean

  1364. to you

  1365. before you

  1366. became a

  1367. Christian?

  1368. Before I

  1369. was a

  1370. Christian

  1371. to win

  1372. means to

  1373. win

  1374. competitions

  1375. between

  1376. peers.

  1377. So I

  1378. raised in

  1379. a family

  1380. where my

  1381. parents have

  1382. high

  1383. expectations

  1384. of me

  1385. and my

  1386. siblings.

  1387. I have

  1388. twin

  1389. sisters

  1390. Edie.

  1391. That's

  1392. why I

  1393. always get

  1394. involved

  1395. in sibling

  1396. competitions.

  1397. My mom

  1398. expects me

  1399. to get

  1400. 100 marks

  1401. even if

  1402. I get

  1403. 99.9.

  1404. So

  1405. and my

  1406. definition

  1407. of approval

  1408. is that

  1409. I understand

  1410. that victory

  1411. precedes

  1412. approval

  1413. for my

  1414. families,

  1415. for my

  1416. siblings,

  1417. and for

  1418. my friends

  1419. and everybody

  1420. who knows

  1421. me.

  1422. and I

  1423. eagerly

  1424. waited for

  1425. next chance

  1426. to prove

  1427. myself,

  1428. to prove

  1429. my value

  1430. and my

  1431. worth.

  1432. I wanted

  1433. to prove

  1434. to people

  1435. that I'm

  1436. able to

  1437. achieve.

  1438. And this

  1439. determination

  1440. and drive

  1441. has motivated

  1442. me to be

  1443. more excellent

  1444. and to be

  1445. better.

  1446. And to be

  1447. better,

  1448. at least I feel

  1449. about myself

  1450. and I never

  1451. want to let

  1452. go of this

  1453. motivation,

  1454. at least.

  1455. Yeah.

  1456. So can

  1457. you tell

  1458. us the

  1459. story of

  1460. the night

  1461. when you

  1462. met Jesus?

  1463. Yeah.

  1464. So there's

  1465. one time

  1466. that I

  1467. was engaged

  1468. in a

  1469. debating

  1470. competition

  1471. and I

  1472. lost a

  1473. debate

  1474. and my

  1475. coach

  1476. Edmund

  1477. brought

  1478. me to

  1479. a dinner

  1480. place and

  1481. he started

  1482. sharing about

  1483. Christianity

  1484. and his

  1485. determination

  1486. and drive

  1487. to teach

  1488. in my

  1489. school.

  1490. He talked

  1491. about his

  1492. relationship

  1493. with Christ

  1494. which is

  1495. really weird

  1496. to me

  1497. because I've

  1498. never imagined

  1499. a relationship

  1500. with somebody

  1501. that you

  1502. don't get to

  1503. see.

  1504. And so

  1505. he spoke

  1506. powerful words

  1507. to me.

  1508. He pointed

  1509. at people

  1510. around me,

  1511. these people

  1512. who are

  1513. powerful,

  1514. wealthy,

  1515. of high

  1516. setting society

  1517. and he

  1518. said this,

  1519. everyone

  1520. is sinful

  1521. and he

  1522. literally says

  1523. everyone.

  1524. And I was

  1525. like,

  1526. these people

  1527. are exactly

  1528. the people

  1529. I want to

  1530. be.

  1531. These people

  1532. are successful

  1533. and it might

  1534. drive in

  1535. determination

  1536. is I

  1537. want to

  1538. be people

  1539. like this

  1540. and if

  1541. your statement

  1542. is true

  1543. then all

  1544. my hope

  1545. in this

  1546. world

  1547. has vanished.

  1548. And so

  1549. I'm really

  1550. serious about

  1551. his sentence.

  1552. I want to

  1553. defend

  1554. whether

  1555. I want

  1556. to prove

  1557. him wrong.

  1558. And so

  1559. I kept

  1560. thinking about

  1561. this and

  1562. he shared

  1563. about what

  1564. sin is and

  1565. what Christianity

  1566. is and

  1567. he shared

  1568. about his

  1569. experience

  1570. in the

  1571. business

  1572. world

  1573. and how

  1574. he could

  1575. get glamour

  1576. and wealth

  1577. in the

  1578. business

  1579. world

  1580. but now

  1581. his calling

  1582. is to

  1583. teach

  1584. and how

  1585. he removed

  1586. himself

  1587. from the

  1588. business

  1589. world

  1590. to a

  1591. teaching

  1592. field.

  1593. And that

  1594. shows me

  1595. a great

  1596. example

  1597. of what

  1598. Christ is

  1599. and the

  1600. single purpose

  1601. and single

  1602. focus of

  1603. a Christian

  1604. life.

  1605. It's where

  1606. you want

  1607. to follow

  1608. a calling

  1609. instead of

  1610. to get

  1611. approval

  1612. which

  1613. was

  1614. something

  1615. I wanted

  1616. to get.

  1617. And so

  1618. Edmund took

  1619. time to

  1620. get to know

  1621. you guys

  1622. and talk

  1623. with you

  1624. guys about

  1625. Jesus.

  1626. Edmund is

  1627. a really

  1628. dedicated

  1629. teacher.

  1630. He spent

  1631. a lot

  1632. of time

  1633. coaching me

  1634. about debating.

  1635. Sometimes I kept

  1636. him until

  1637. 9 o'clock at

  1638. 10 just for

  1639. my training

  1640. and he

  1641. sometimes

  1642. just told

  1643. me a joke

  1644. like,

  1645. Justin,

  1646. you have to

  1647. let me go.

  1648. If not,

  1649. tomorrow I will

  1650. be single.

  1651. Yeah,

  1652. I just want

  1653. to throw

  1654. a comment

  1655. in there.

  1656. Justin is

  1657. an amazing

  1658. example of

  1659. what can

  1660. happen when

  1661. we take

  1662. time to

  1663. invest in

  1664. young people's

  1665. lives.

  1666. I want to

  1667. encourage you

  1668. guys,

  1669. if you aren't

  1670. doing this

  1671. already,

  1672. find some

  1673. young people

  1674. around the

  1675. church that

  1676. you can get

  1677. involved in

  1678. and invest

  1679. in because

  1680. it really

  1681. does make

  1682. a difference

  1683. in their

  1684. lives.

  1685. So Justin,

  1686. after that

  1687. evening,

  1688. how did

  1689. your definition

  1690. of winning

  1691. and approval

  1692. change?

  1693. My newfound

  1694. definition of

  1695. to win

  1696. is to

  1697. win spiritual

  1698. battles with

  1699. the power

  1700. of God.

  1701. I mean,

  1702. there are

  1703. divisions,

  1704. chapter 6,

  1705. verse 10

  1706. says,

  1707. finally be

  1708. strong in

  1709. the Lord

  1710. and the

  1711. strength of

  1712. his might,

  1713. put in the

  1714. whole armor

  1715. of God,

  1716. that you

  1717. might be

  1718. able to

  1719. stand against

  1720. the schemes

  1721. of the devil.

  1722. So I mean,

  1723. now as a

  1724. Christian,

  1725. the single

  1726. purpose of

  1727. life is to

  1728. fight a

  1729. battle,

  1730. the spiritual

  1731. battle with

  1732. the power

  1733. of God.

  1734. And my

  1735. newfound

  1736. definition of

  1737. approval is

  1738. also different

  1739. in the sense

  1740. that this

  1741. approval is

  1742. not from

  1743. people,

  1744. is from

  1745. Jesus,

  1746. is from

  1747. God,

  1748. where this

  1749. is not

  1750. achieved by

  1751. my own

  1752. power,

  1753. it's achieved

  1754. by Jesus

  1755. dying on the

  1756. cross.

  1757. And I have

  1758. to trust that,

  1759. I have to put

  1760. my trust in

  1761. Jesus and

  1762. believe that

  1763. his power is

  1764. greater than

  1765. mine and I

  1766. can rely on

  1767. his power in

  1768. everything I do.

  1769. And as you

  1770. think about

  1771. how these

  1772. definitions

  1773. change for

  1774. you,

  1775. can you

  1776. share with

  1777. us an

  1778. example of

  1779. a time

  1780. since you

  1781. became a

  1782. Christian

  1783. where that

  1784. made a

  1785. difference in

  1786. your life?

  1787. I want to

  1788. share an

  1789. experience about

  1790. me getting

  1791. into an

  1792. interview for

  1793. an outstanding

  1794. student award

  1795. competition where

  1796. I got a

  1797. really personal

  1798. interview from

  1799. the judges.

  1800. So I was

  1801. asked questions

  1802. about my

  1803. personal belief,

  1804. where I find

  1805. value in,

  1806. and also

  1807. questions for

  1808. me to talk

  1809. about myself

  1810. eventually.

  1811. And so there

  1812. is a struggle

  1813. between me

  1814. about should I

  1815. manipulate the

  1816. performance to

  1817. hide my

  1818. weaknesses and

  1819. present like a

  1820. perfect Justin

  1821. to the judges

  1822. or should I be

  1823. honest about

  1824. myself to

  1825. accept who I

  1826. am as son

  1827. of God and

  1828. to just

  1829. present my

  1830. whatever I

  1831. am and find

  1832. satisfaction who

  1833. I am.

  1834. So it's this

  1835. struggle to gain

  1836. approval from

  1837. the judges or

  1838. the approval

  1839. of God.

  1840. And I knew

  1841. exactly if I

  1842. want to present

  1843. myself honestly,

  1844. I might have

  1845. to fall short

  1846. of their

  1847. expectations.

  1848. I might have

  1849. to lose the

  1850. competition.

  1851. But eventually

  1852. I come up with

  1853. this.

  1854. It's better to

  1855. have an impact

  1856. on these judges

  1857. and fall short

  1858. of their

  1859. expectations than

  1860. to hide the

  1861. light.

  1862. Because I want

  1863. to shine a

  1864. light and have

  1865. a strong

  1866. impact on them.

  1867. I think that's

  1868. more important.

  1869. awesome.

  1870. Thanks for

  1871. sharing.

  1872. Is there

  1873. anything else

  1874. you wanted

  1875. to say?

  1876. All right.

  1877. Thanks for

  1878. sharing.

  1879. Thank you.

  1880. I think that's

  1881. an awesome

  1882. picture of the

  1883. impact that

  1884. living with this

  1885. singular focus

  1886. in life makes.

  1887. And so as we

  1888. come close to

  1889. the close today,

  1890. I want us to

  1891. think about what

  1892. it is that we

  1893. are living for.

  1894. On each of

  1895. your chairs we

  1896. put a little

  1897. card.

  1898. It looks like

  1899. this, only

  1900. smaller.

  1901. It says,

  1902. to live is

  1903. blank.

  1904. Blank is

  1905. gain.

  1906. As we go

  1907. throughout our

  1908. weeks this

  1909. week, I want

  1910. us to take

  1911. some time and

  1912. think about what

  1913. do we put in

  1914. the blank in

  1915. our lives.

  1916. Because, at

  1917. least for me, I

  1918. know that far

  1919. too often the

  1920. words that go

  1921. here are not

  1922. Christ and the

  1923. words that go

  1924. here are not

  1925. to die.

  1926. If I'm being

  1927. really honest,

  1928. more often it

  1929. probably says,

  1930. to live is

  1931. success.

  1932. Continued

  1933. excellence at

  1934. everything is

  1935. gain.

  1936. As I look at

  1937. the story of

  1938. the gospel and

  1939. think about who

  1940. God is and what

  1941. he's done, I

  1942. realize that when

  1943. I come to him

  1944. for salvation, he

  1945. doesn't care about

  1946. my success.

  1947. He doesn't want

  1948. my success.

  1949. Actually, the

  1950. only thing I

  1951. contribute to my

  1952. salvation is my

  1953. failure to obey

  1954. him and my need

  1955. for him to save

  1956. me.

  1957. And that he

  1958. saves me not

  1959. only despite my

  1960. failures, but

  1961. because of my

  1962. failures.

  1963. My failures are

  1964. what makes me

  1965. need a savior.

  1966. And success

  1967. isn't a bad

  1968. thing.

  1969. Excellence isn't a

  1970. bad thing.

  1971. But when I take

  1972. them and I make

  1973. them ultimate in

  1974. life, I live in a

  1975. way that contradicts

  1976. the gospel I say I

  1977. believe.

  1978. And so my

  1979. challenge for you

  1980. is think through

  1981. what goes in the

  1982. blanks in your

  1983. life.

  1984. And how do you

  1985. know if the

  1986. answers you gave

  1987. are accurate?

  1988. Someone pointed

  1989. out to me this

  1990. week that what

  1991. we're living for

  1992. will determine what

  1993. we are willing to

  1994. suffer for.

  1995. I think for a lot

1996. of us in this room,

  1997. we'd be willing to

  1998. suffer for a better

  1999. paycheck.

2000. For a lot of us in

  2001. this room, we'd be

  2002. willing to suffer for

  2003. more popularity.

  2004. We'd be willing to

  2005. suffer to save face.

  2006. Would we be willing

  2007. to suffer for

  2008. Christ?

  2009. Another question I

2010. have is if in the

  2011. next month you were

  2012. to lose something

  2013. really valuable,

  2014. would that prove or

  2015. disprove the

  2016. accuracy of what you

  2017. put down here?

  2018. If you say you're

  2019. living for Christ and

  2020. the stock market

  2021. crashes in the next

  2022. month, will your

  2023. response validate

  2024. the fact that you're

  2025. living for Christ?

  2026. Or will it actually

  2027. say that in reality

  2028. to live is money,

  2029. profit is gain,

  2030. to live is happiness,

  2031. comfort is gain?

  2032. How are our lives

  2033. backing up what we

  2034. say we're living for?

  2035. And another thing

  2036. that has been very,

  2037. very challenging for

  2038. me this week is

  2039. someone mentioned

  2040. an excellent way to

  2041. test the truthfulness

  2042. of the answers we

2043. put down here is to

  2044. ask close friends and

  2045. family members what

  2046. they would put in

  2047. these spaces if they

2048. filled it in for us.

  2049. It's going to be a

  2050. little bit scary.

2051. It can be a little bit

  2052. painful.

  2053. But I figured I

  2054. should apply this

2055. truth to my own life

  2056. before trying to

  2057. teach it to everyone

  2058. else here.

  2059. So I asked a number

  2060. of friends this week,

2061. what would you put in

2062. these spaces in my life

2063. if you had to do that?

2064. And some of my friends

  2065. apparently think that I

  2066. am the Apostle Paul.

  2067. They gave these glowing

  2068. responses and I don't

  2069. know where they came

  2070. from.

2071. But one friend gave a

  2072. startling, painfully true

  2073. answer.

2074. This friend said, you want

  2075. to be known and

  2076. approved of.

2077. You want people to be

  2078. impressed with you.

  2079. You want to impress

  2080. yourself.

2081. As I read those words,

  2082. it stung.

2083. It hurt because I knew

  2084. that they were true.

  2085. But it's a good thing

  2086. because in seeing that,

  2087. in realizing that about

2088. myself, I can see again

2089. more clearly where I need

  2090. Jesus.

  2091. I haven't made it yet.

2092. I want to be able to say

2093. to live is Christ, to die

  2094. is gain.

2095. But if I'm being honest

2096. most of the time, that's

2097. not what my life reflects.

  2098. I'm trying.

  2099. I hope I'm making progress.

2100. I hope all of us are

  2101. making progress.

2102. But as we think about

2103. this, as we see the ways

2104. that our lives are not

2105. Christ and we see other

  2106. things besides Christ's

2107. gain, it will show us

  2108. more clearly.

2109. the ways that we need

  2110. Jesus.

2111. It will show us more

  2112. clearly the ways that

2113. Jesus is still in the

2114. process of working on us

2115. and it will drive us back

  2116. to him for forgiveness

  2117. and salvation because he

  2118. offers it to us.

2119. Our answers to this don't

  2120. determine whether or not

  2121. God loves us.

2122. The cross is our proof once

2123. and for all that God does

  2124. love us.

2125. So my challenge for you

2126. this week is think this

  2127. through.

  2128. What is life?

  2129. What is gain?

2130. If you're here today and

  2131. you're not a Christian, I

2132. also want to challenge you

  2133. to fill this in.

  2134. I don't expect that if

  2135. you're a Christian you

2136. would want the answer, or

  2137. yeah, if you're not a

  2138. Christian, I don't expect

  2139. you would want the

2140. answers to say to live is

2141. Christ, to die is gain.

2142. My challenge for you if

  2143. you're not a Christian is

2144. fill this in and take it

  2145. one step further.

  2146. Play out the logical

  2147. conclusion of whatever you

  2148. put in the gaps.

  2149. Say you're living for

  2150. happiness.

2151. You see comfort is gain.

2152. How long will that last

  2153. you?

  2154. If the stock market

  2155. crashes tomorrow, how is

2156. this picture going to hold

  2157. up?

2158. Even if you can be happy

  2159. your entire life, where

2160. does it leave you when you

  2161. die?

2162. If to live is money and

2163. profit is gain, what hope

  2164. does that give you?

2165. The more I think about it,

2166. the more I realize living

2167. for Jesus is the only

  2168. thing that's going to

  2169. last.

2170. Living for Jesus is the

  2171. only thing that's going

2172. to give us a continued

2173. hope, to give us continued

2174. gain, not just in this

2175. life, but also in the next

  2176. one.

2177. I think that is why Paul had

  2178. this singular focus.

2179. That's why Paul sat in

2180. this prison and said, I

  2181. don't care that I'm in

  2182. chains, I'm rejoicing.

  2183. Because despite my chains,

2184. and even because of my

2185. chains, the word of Christ

  2186. is being preached.

  2187. People are hearing about

  2188. Jesus.

  2189. People are hearing this

  2190. good news.

2191. People are falling in love

  2192. with him.

2193. And in that, I will rejoice.

2194. Because for me, to live is

2195. Christ and to die is gain.

  2196. Let's pray.

  2197. Father, we thank you.

2198. We thank you for the cross.

2199. We thank you for Jesus and

2200. for your love for us.

2201. We thank you that life can

  2202. be about knowing you.

2203. That we don't have to live

2204. for things that are going

2205. to pass away, that are going

2206. to fail us, but that we can

  2207. live for Christ.

2208. I pray that as we go

  2209. throughout our weeks, we

2210. would think about this truth.

2211. We would discover the ways

2212. that our lives fall short of

  2213. that calling.

2214. That we would discover more

2215. and more what it looks like

2216. and what it means to follow

2217. you and fall in love with

  2218. you.

2219. God, please let it be true

2220. of us that to live is Christ

2221. and to die is gain.

  2222. In Jesus' name, amen.

  2223. Amen.
