  1. Today we continue our study of Philippians, beginning in chapter 2, as we look at Christ's example of humility.

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin as we read.

  3. The Apostle Paul writes this,

  4. So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy,

  5. complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.

  6. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  7. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

  8. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,

  9. who though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,

  10. but emptied himself by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.

  11. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

  12. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him in the name that is above every name,

  13. so that in the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

  14. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

  15. Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence, but much more in my absence,

  16. work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

  17. for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

  18. Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent,

  19. children of God without blemish, in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation,

  20. among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life,

  21. so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.

  22. Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the circumferential offering of your faith,

  23. I am glad and rejoice with you all.

  24. Likewise, you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

  25. This is the reading of God's word.

  26. My name is Alistair.

  27. If I haven't met you before, I'm one of the pastors here at Watermark,

  28. so I'd like to welcome you here if you're new.

  29. Last week we looked at the first chapter of the book of Philippians,

  30. and now we're on the second chapter.

  31. And as Aldrin said, Eric, who spoke last week,

  32. talked about that famous line of Paul's,

  33. to live is Christ and to die is gain.

  34. And for those of you who were here last week,

  35. you'll remember that we each got a sheet of paper as well,

  36. where the words Christ and die were blanked out.

  37. So we had to think about what it was that we lived for

  38. and what it was that we sought after that we felt would give our lives gain.

  39. And so I thought about that during the week.

  40. And for me, I think the answer would be something like this.

  41. To live is success.

  42. And approval is gain.

  43. I think that might be the case for many people.

  44. But for me, certainly, that was the case.

  45. And I didn't even realize this was the case until quite recently.

  46. Because in ministry, as you're serving as a pastor,

  47. this is a trap that they say that many pastors can fall into.

  48. But of course, nobody thinks it will happen to them.

  49. And yet, as you're pastoring, as you're doing ministry,

  50. you think of ministry success

  51. as something that is the most important thing to you.

  52. And then when you achieve it,

  53. then that's really living.

  54. And, yeah, it's like you can't see yourself

  55. until you see kind of the...

  56. Well, until you fall.

  57. And then you see what happens.

  58. Or you see kind of your inner being is uncovered.

  59. We're going to be looking today at the chapter 2 of Philippians,

  60. which talks a lot about what it means to live in Christ.

  61. And Paul is challenging his readers, the Philippians,

  62. to actually live out that life in Christ

  63. in community amongst each other.

  64. And so he appeals to them

  65. based on whether they have encouragement in Christ,

  66. any love, if they've known this life in Christ.

  67. And if they have,

  68. then they should express that.

  69. They should express that

  70. in love for one another.

  71. And so that's why he says in verse 2,

  72. complete my joy by being of the same mind,

  73. having the same love,

  74. being in full accord and of one mind.

  75. He wants them to be of one mind together.

  76. And that mind that he wants them to have together

  77. in their community

  78. is none other than the mind of Christ.

  79. We'll get to that in a second.

  80. But what that looks like,

  81. he tells us in verses 3 and 4,

  82. if you've got it in front of you.

  83. He says,

  84. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit,

  85. but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

  86. Let each of you look not only to his own interests,

  87. but also to the interests of others.

  88. See, Paul calls for unity,

  89. a spiritual oneness amongst the church that's there,

  90. suggesting perhaps that there was some tension or disagreement there.

  91. But he also says that humility is the key to unity.

  92. A call to unity is a call to humility.

  93. And what does humility look like?

  94. Well, Paul defines humility as

  95. counting others as more significant than yourselves.

  96. In Australia, for quite a long time,

  97. probably maybe nearly a decade,

  98. one of the biggest banks ran a commercial with this line,

  99. for the most important person in the world,

  100. you.

  101. And this was run through the kind of the 90s

  102. and past that as well.

  103. And it's encapsulated the feel of,

  104. I guess, a people, a nation.

  105. Yes, that's right.

  106. The most important person in the world is me.

  107. And so everything, including the banks,

  108. should be there to serve me.

  109. And this kind of tagline continued unquestioned for all this time

  110. because it just spoke to where people were at

  111. and what people were thinking in their inner being.

  112. To look to the interests of others

  113. and not to the interests of yourselves

  114. requires that you think of others

  115. as more important than you

  116. rather than yourself as the most important person

  117. in the room

  118. or in your family

  119. or in your world.

  120. The problem is that

  121. often we are only interested in our own interests.

  122. And we are only interested then in other people

  123. as far as they can further our own interests.

  124. How often have you heard the complaint,

  125. why aren't you interested in what I'm talking about?

  126. This is the complaint of a world full of people

  127. who are only interested in themselves

  128. and in their own good.

  129. A famous writer has said,

  130. most people do not listen with the intent to understand.

  131. They listen with the intent to reply.

  132. I don't know if you've ever done that

  133. where you're listening to somebody

  134. or you're in an argument with somebody

  135. and you're not actually listening to them

  136. to hear what they're saying.

  137. You're actually listening to them

  138. and at the same time formulating something in your head

  139. so that you can reply back to them.

  140. Actually listening to someone,

  141. giving them your full attention

  142. means to consider their words to be important.

  143. It means to really listen.

  144. But for many of us, we like to talk.

  145. I like to talk.

  146. And sometimes I find myself talking

  147. in several conversations all at once.

  148. Some online and some in real life and so on.

  149. And I just wonder whether I and you

  150. have ever given the impression to somebody

  151. or to the person in front of you

  152. that they're just a distraction

  153. from the more important thing that you are doing.

  154. You know, Jesus never multitasked people.

  155. He never gave people...

  156. He always gave people his full attention.

  157. Whenever he was speaking to somebody,

  158. he was engaged with them.

  159. And they were never, for him,

  160. a means to some other end.

  161. As he spoke to them, he ministered to them,

  162. he loved them,

  163. and he wasn't busy doing something else.

  164. What it means to look to the interests of others,

  165. not just our own interests,

  166. means to...

  167. Well, superficially, it means, firstly,

  168. paying attention in a conversation

  169. and not being, say, on a smartphone

  170. while you're talking and listening to somebody.

  171. And I'm as guilty as this as anyone.

  172. But more deeply, it means

  173. to stop seeing people

  174. as a means to your self-fulfillment.

  175. This applies to many areas of life,

  176. not least to spouses

  177. or the marriage relationship.

  178. Tim Keller, who is a pastor in New York,

  179. writes,

  180. a marriage based not on self-denial

  181. but on self-fulfillment

  182. will require a no-maintenance partner

  183. who meets your needs

  184. while making almost no claims on you.

  185. Simply put, today,

  186. people are asking far too much

  187. in search for the marriage partner.

  188. And for years now,

  189. marriage researchers have been saying

  190. and arguing that

  191. a strong network of friends

  192. is the best way to keep a marriage strong.

  193. They say,

  194. today we put much more emphasis

  195. or we expect more intimacy

  196. and support from our partners

  197. than in the past,

  198. but much less from everybody else.

  199. And this puts a huge strain

  200. on the institution of marriage.

  201. Often the marriage buckles

  202. under the weight of partners' expectations

  203. that they will fill every one

  204. of each other's needs.

  205. Using others in the quest

  206. for our own self-fulfillment

  207. will ruin any relationship.

  208. And that applies for co-workers

  209. or bosses or friends,

  210. siblings,

  211. your pastor,

  212. one another in the church.

  213. You see, this is the path

  214. of selfish ambition,

  215. what Paul talks about there

  216. in verses 3 and 4.

  217. And selfish ambition

  218. means to take your interests,

  219. to place them

  220. as your highest priority,

  221. and then to turn others

  222. into tools or means

  223. in order to achieve

  224. that highest priority

  225. that you have.

  226. It is the opposite

  227. of what Paul describes

  228. as humility.

  229. It is to only think about

  230. and look out for yourself.

  231. Selfish ambition

  232. would never put anyone's thoughts

  233. or needs above itself.

  234. Selfish ambition

  235. would do or say

  236. whatever was necessary

  237. in order to make

  238. him or herself

  239. look better in front of others

  240. in order to advance

  241. their own cause.

  242. By contrast,

  243. to put other people's interests

  244. ahead of your own

  245. means to put your own interests

  246. on hold.

  247. This is what children

  248. find so hard to do.

  249. How they can't have

  250. what they want

  251. and have it now.

  252. My four-year-old niece

  253. is a firstborn

  254. and, like many four-year-olds,

  255. considers herself

  256. to be the center

  257. of her world.

  258. And she has this

  259. kind of habit

  260. that when

  261. she feels like

  262. she's being ignored

  263. by the important

  264. adults in her life,

  265. she will repeat

  266. what she wants

  267. to say

  268. louder

  269. and louder

  270. and louder

  271. until she's yelling

  272. at the top of her voice.

  273. And we say to her

  274. that that's not right.

  275. She needs to wait.

  276. That it's rude

  277. to interrupt and yell.

  278. And she can't have

  279. everything she wants

  280. straight away.

  281. Unless, say,

  282. it's an emergency,

  283. like,

  284. Mommy, I need to go

  285. to the toilet right now.

  286. Then, yes,

  287. okay, we stop everything

  288. and help her out.

  289. But, see,

  290. what she needs to learn

  291. is that she's not

  292. the center

  293. of her family

  294. or her world,

  295. of the world.

  296. And yet,

  297. sadly,

  298. it seems that

  299. even adults

  300. have grown up

  301. or some adults

  302. have grown up

  303. not understanding

  304. this reality.

  305. And we see

  306. that self-centeredness

  307. is the biggest obstacle

  308. to unity,

  309. harmony,

  310. to good relationship

  311. in our lives.

  312. And even secular researchers

  313. have caught on to this.

  314. There's a researcher

  315. in Australia

  316. called Hugh Mackay

  317. and he's spent

  318. the last 40 years

  319. researching,

  320. asking questions

  321. about people's lives,

  322. their loves,

  323. their hopes,

  324. their ambitions,

  325. their fears

  326. and their passions,

  327. measuring people's

  328. happiness levels.

  329. And what he's discovered

  330. in that time

  331. is that

  332. the quest

  333. for personal happiness

  334. and fulfillment

  335. actually doesn't make

  336. people happy

  337. at all.

  338. Rather,

  339. true happiness,

  340. he says,

  341. or he's found,

  342. is found

  343. in losing oneself

  344. in service

  345. to another.

  346. And so,

  347. after 40 years

  348. of this research,

  349. he actually wrote

  350. a book about it

  351. called The Good Life.

  352. And in it,

  353. as it says,

  354. he asks the ultimate question,

  355. what makes a life

  356. worth living?

  357. His conclusion,

  358. drawn from his research,

  359. is this.

  360. A good life

  361. is not measured

  362. by security,

  363. wealth,

  364. status,

  365. achievement,

  366. or levels of happiness.

  367. A good life

  368. is determined

  369. by our capacity

  370. for selflessness

  371. and our willingness

  372. to connect

  373. with those around us

  374. in a meaningful

  375. and useful way.

  376. Hugh looks at

  377. the numerous ways

  378. we get distracted

  379. from this purpose.

  380. He examines

  381. what he calls

  382. the utopian complex,

  383. which describes

  384. our dangerous desire

  385. for perfection

  386. and the false expectation

  387. that life will unfold

  388. according to our

  389. carefully laid plans.

  390. He highlights

  391. the things that lead us

  392. along paths

  393. to pain and confusion,

  394. particularly

  395. our willingness

  396. to sacrifice

  397. others

  398. on the altar

  399. of our own

  400. personal desires

  401. and ambitions.

  402. There it is,

  403. selfish ambition.

  404. And what he says,

  405. of course,

  406. is that it is the life

  407. that is lived

  408. for others

  409. that is the one

  410. that is worth living.

  411. And to argue

  412. his point,

  413. Hugh draws heavily

  414. on the golden rule

  415. that is to do

  416. unto others

  417. as you would have

  418. them do to you

  419. that Jesus spoke about.

  420. But at the same time,

  421. he doesn't want

  422. to have any kind

  423. of picture of God

  424. in his world view.

  425. And so,

  426. is it possible then

  427. for society to live

  428. by the golden rule

  429. when it's been cut off

  430. from the person

  431. who taught it?

  432. Well, I would say

  433. the answer would be no.

  434. And in fact,

  435. the very reason

  436. this book is written,

  437. as Mackay himself says,

  438. is because he sees

  439. that more and more

  440. in our society,

  441. people are living

  442. for themselves.

  443. The early Christians

  444. were known

  445. for their care

  446. for others,

  447. for one another,

  448. their love

  449. for one another,

  450. and their care

  451. for the poor,

  452. the weak,

  453. the marginalized,

  454. the despised.

  455. And you know,

  456. there was only one reason

  457. they lived that way.

  458. They believed

  459. that the one

  460. who was crucified

  461. and rose again

  462. called them

  463. into that life.

  464. You see,

  465. when Paul calls

  466. for the Philippians

  467. to live

  468. not for themselves

  469. but for others,

  470. on what basis

  471. does he do so?

  472. Is he saying

  473. that it's just

  474. like a self-evident ethic?

  475. No.

  476. The self-evident ethic

  477. to most of us,

  478. actually,

  479. is to live

  480. in selfish ambition.

  481. In seeking

  482. to put ourselves

  483. ahead of others.

  484. No.

  485. What Paul argues on,

  486. on the basis of,

  487. is the humility,

  488. the humiliation

  489. of God.

  490. So in verses 5 to 11,

  491. we have this,

  492. some call it a poem

  493. or hymn to Christ.

  494. And it's the ultimate

  495. example of humility.

  496. humility.

  497. See,

  498. the ultimate example

  499. of humility

  500. is God himself.

  501. Which sounds strange

  502. until you think about

  503. what he did

  504. in Christ.

  505. And so Paul says,

  506. we should have

  507. this mind

  508. amongst ourselves,

  509. this mind

  510. of Christ.

  511. And what he means

  512. by that

  513. is that we should

  514. apply what we think

  515. about Christ

  516. to our lives

  517. together.

  518. we should think

  519. about Jesus

  520. and what he did

  521. and our relationship

  522. with him.

  523. And we should

  524. live that out

  525. amongst one another

  526. in our community.

  527. So when Paul says,

  528. have this mind,

  529. he means adopt it,

  530. take it on,

  531. internalize it

  532. within yourself,

  533. among yourselves,

  534. in your community.

  535. and he says,

  536. Jesus,

  537. who is in the form

  538. of God,

  539. didn't consider

  540. equality with God

  541. something to be grasped,

  542. but made himself

  543. nothing

  544. or emptied himself.

  545. What does it mean

  546. to say that Jesus

  547. is in the form

  548. of God?

  549. Is it just saying

  550. that Jesus

  551. looked like God,

  552. but was just,

  553. like an external

  554. appearance?

  555. Well,

  556. in the Old Testament,

  557. the form of God

  558. manifested itself

  559. as the glory

  560. of God.

  561. You might remember

  562. in the book of Exodus,

  563. Moses is shown

  564. the form of God

  565. and he sees

  566. all his glory

  567. pass him by.

  568. Here we are told

  569. that Jesus

  570. has the very form

  571. of God.

  572. And the form

  573. of God

  574. in classical Greek

  575. refers to

  576. the characteristic

  577. attributes

  578. of God.

  579. That is,

  580. who God is

  581. inside of him,

  582. that is who

  583. Jesus is.

  584. And in the very

  585. same verse,

  586. the form of God

  587. is equated

  588. with being

  589. equal with God.

  590. That's the way

  591. that Paul sees it,

  592. that Jesus

  593. is equated

  594. with God.

  595. And yet,

  596. being somebody

  597. who was equal

  598. in divinity

  599. with God,

  600. he refused

  601. to use his divinity

  602. selfishly.

  603. he didn't say,

  604. I'm going to look

  605. after the most

  606. important person

  607. in the world,

  608. me.

  609. Even though

  610. he had the power

  611. to do so.

  612. He had the right

  613. to do so.

  614. See,

  615. Jesus didn't stay

  616. safe

  617. in heaven

  618. or grasp

  619. for equality

  620. with God.

  621. you could say

  622. that he didn't

  623. exert his rights

  624. or assert

  625. his rights.

  626. And the language

  627. of rights

  628. was originally

  629. used to protect

  630. the weak

  631. and the powerless,

  632. to say that

  633. all humans

  634. have an equality

  635. here on earth

  636. so that we

  637. shouldn't mistreat

  638. anyone.

  639. But we've turned

  640. the language of rights

  641. today into

  642. a selfish plea

  643. to say,

  644. give me my rights.

  645. we want to assert

  646. our own rights.

  647. But Jesus

  648. emptied himself

  649. and humbled himself.

  650. He didn't remain

  651. in perfect communion

  652. with his Father

  653. in heaven,

  654. but instead

  655. emptied himself

  656. of his glory

  657. and became

  658. flesh,

  659. a human.

  660. And he humbled

  661. himself,

  662. not coming as a

  663. prince or an

  664. emperor,

  665. but an ordinary

  666. man,

  667. walking a path

  668. that led to death.

  669. Why?

  670. It wasn't for

  671. the fun of it.

  672. It wasn't fun,

  673. not the dying

  674. part anyway.

  675. Jesus came

  676. and he died

  677. and he became

  678. nothing

  679. so that we

  680. could become

  681. something.

  682. Romans 5

    Romans 5:8

  683. verse 8

  684. tells us

  685. that God

  686. showed his

  687. love for us

  688. in that while

  689. we were still

  690. sinners,

  691. Christ died

  692. for us.

  693. So Paul

  694. is reminding

  695. his readers

  696. here that it

  697. is only through

  698. the death of

  699. Christ,

  700. that they are

  701. here at all,

  702. able to be

  703. in relationship

  704. with one another,

  705. to be in

  706. relationship with

  707. God.

  708. And one of the

  709. things about

  710. selfishness is

  711. that it fails

  712. to see the

  713. bigger picture.

  714. Your world

  715. shrinks down

  716. to just you

  717. and your

  718. concerns.

  719. And particularly

  720. when we have

  721. arguments and

  722. fights and we're

  723. trying to prevail

  724. over another,

  725. our concerns

  726. seem to

  727. engulf us

  728. and become

  729. our world.

  730. I don't know

  731. if you've ever

  732. experienced that.

  733. I have.

  734. But Paul is

  735. saying there's

  736. something bigger

  737. than your fights

  738. and your disputes,

  739. your grumbling

  740. and your selfish

  741. ambition.

  742. And that

  743. something,

  744. that someone

  745. bigger,

  746. came and

  747. died for you.

  748. and to bring

  749. home just how

  750. much bigger

  751. that is,

  752. Paul then

  753. talks about

  754. God's future

  755. plans for his

  756. son.

  757. That Jesus

  758. will be given

  759. the name

  760. above every

  761. name.

  762. And that at

  763. that name,

  764. every knee

  765. shall bow

  766. and tongue

  767. will confess

  768. that Jesus

  769. is Lord.

  770. I didn't

  771. realize it

  772. before this

  773. week,

  774. but that

  775. verse is

  776. actually a

  777. quote from

  778. the Old

  779. Testament,

  780. from Isaiah

    Isaiah 45 chapter mention

  781. chapter 45.

  782. Isaiah

    Isaiah 45:22

  783. chapter 45

  784. verses 22

  785. and 23

  786. say this,

  787. Turn to me

  788. and be

  789. saved,

  790. all the

  791. ends of

  792. the earth,

  793. for I am

  794. God and

  795. there is

  796. no other.

  797. By myself

  798. I have

  799. sworn,

  800. for my

  801. mouth has

  802. gone out

  803. in righteousness

  804. a word

  805. that shall

  806. not return.

  807. To me

  808. every knee

  809. shall bow,

  810. every tongue

  811. shall swear

  812. allegiance.

  813. To whom

  814. shall the

  815. knee bow

  816. and the

  817. tongue

  818. confess

  819. that is

  820. Lord?

  821. It's

  822. God

  823. himself.

  824. As he

  825. says,

  826. I am

  827. God,

  828. there is

  829. no other.

  830. And so

  831. we see

  832. here early,

  833. early on

  834. in the

  835. New Testament

  836. the idea

  837. that Jesus

  838. is God,

  839. equal with

  840. God,

  841. and yet

  842. there is

  843. only one

  844. God,

  845. is already

  846. placed here

  847. in these

  848. early times

  849. in the

  850. New Testament.

  851. It's

  852. where we

  853. get the

  854. doctrine of

  855. the Trinity,

  856. that there

  857. is only

  858. one God

  859. that we

  860. follow,

  861. but that

  862. Jesus is

  863. fully God,

  864. as well as

  865. fully human,

  866. as we also

  867. saw.

  868. So think

  869. about that

  870. for a second,

  871. that this

  872. is our

  873. God.

  874. This is the

  875. one whom

  876. we Christians

  877. profess to

  878. follow.

  879. If the

  880. character of

  881. God is

  882. one of

  883. humility,

  884. then surely

  885. the character

  886. of the

  887. Christian

  888. church

  889. should also

  890. be one

  891. of

  892. humility.

  893. It makes

  894. sense.

  895. And so

  896. we,

  897. if we are

  898. followers of

  899. Jesus,

  900. ought to

  901. display the

  902. character of

  903. Jesus.

  904. For a

  905. Christian to

  906. act selfishly,

  907. with pride,

  908. is simply not

  909. being true to

  910. our Lord,

  911. who acted

  912. with humility.

  913. humility.

  914. This is what

  915. Paul means

  916. when he says,

  917. have this

  918. mind amongst

  919. yourselves.

  920. He's saying,

  921. adopt this

  922. frame of

  923. mind in

  924. your community.

  925. Don't be

  926. grumbling and

  927. complaining,

  928. filled with

  929. selfish ambition

  930. and conceit.

  931. Have that

  932. same mind

  933. of Christ

  934. in your

  935. interactions

  936. with one

  937. another.

  938. Well,

  939. what does it

  940. mean then to

  941. have the same

  942. mind of

  943. Christ?

  944. Christ?

  945. Well,

  946. it means as

  947. we think of

  948. one another,

  949. of our

  950. relationships

  951. with one

  952. another,

  953. apply that

  954. thinking of

  955. Christ to

  956. one another.

  957. And how

  958. would things

  959. change if we

  960. applied the

  961. mind of

  962. Christ to

  963. our life

  964. together in

  965. community?

  966. Well,

  967. a community

  968. would be

  969. marked with

  970. forgiveness,

  971. selflessness,

  972. humility, as

  973. we've already

  974. talked about,

  975. seeking the

  976. good of

  977. others,

  978. not grumbling

  979. or complaining

  980. and rejoicing.

  981. It's pretty

  982. hard to

  983. rejoice if

  984. you're grumbling

  985. and complaining.

  986. And I want

  987. to talk a

  988. little bit

  989. about maybe

  990. just a couple

  991. of these and

  992. what that

  993. might look

  994. like.

  995. Or maybe

  996. just thinking

  997. about just

  998. how hard

  999. that is

  1000. actually in

  1001. the Christian

  1002. life.

  1003. I don't

  1004. know if

  1005. you guys,

  1006. some of

  1007. you will

  1008. have known

  1009. this,

  1010. but I've

  1011. been working

  1012. as a

  1013. pastor for

  1014. five years.

  1015. And before

  1016. I came to

  1017. Hong Kong,

  1018. I was

  1019. working in

  1020. Sydney.

  1021. And I

  1022. said before,

  1023. didn't I,

  1024. that my

  1025. answers to

  1026. that question,

  1027. to blank is

  1028. Christ,

  1029. was success

  1030. is to

  1031. live.

  1032. Or to

  1033. live is

  1034. success.

  1035. And so

  1036. what I was

  1037. looking for

  1038. was ministry

  1039. success and

  1040. the approval

  1041. that would

  1042. come with

  1043. it.

  1044. And I

  1045. didn't even

  1046. know that

  1047. at the

  1048. time.

  1049. But what

  1050. I found

  1051. when I

  1052. started in

  1053. ministry was

  1054. I would

  1055. be working

  1056. in a place

  1057. and the

  1058. kind of

  1059. things that

  1060. I saw

  1061. and advice

  1062. that I

  1063. gave were

  1064. not

  1065. appreciated.

  1066. And

  1067. particularly

  1068. those who

  1069. were in

  1070. control of

  1071. the ministries

  1072. around me

  1073. just simply

  1074. pushed me

  1075. aside and

  1076. marginalized

  1077. me and

  1078. didn't listen

  1079. to anything

  1080. I had to

  1081. say.

  1082. And so

  1083. as a result,

  1084. I was

  1085. frustrated

  1086. because what

  1087. I wanted

  1088. to see

  1089. change and

  1090. transformation

  1091. happening in

  1092. the church,

  1093. the ministry

  1094. growing,

  1095. was frustrated

  1096. by these

  1097. leaders who

  1098. would not do

  1099. anything about

  1100. the situation

  1101. there.

  1102. And I'm not

  1103. saying that

  1104. the things

  1105. that I saw

  1106. were wrong.

  1107. Even some

  1108. of the leaders

  1109. agreed with

  1110. me in terms

  1111. of the things

  1112. that I saw,

  1113. but they

  1114. didn't want

  1115. to rock

  1116. the boat.

  1117. They didn't

  1118. want to

  1119. make the

  1120. hard decisions

  1121. that would

  1122. be necessary

  1123. in order to

  1124. help and

  1125. to cause

  1126. people to

  1127. grow.

  1128. And I'm

  1129. not saying

  1130. that what

  1131. I wanted

  1132. was wrong,

  1133. but my

  1134. response to

  1135. what happened

  1136. showed that

  1137. I was actually

  1138. being driven

  1139. by selfish

  1140. ambition.

  1141. temptation.

  1142. Because as

  1143. I was being

  1144. pushed aside,

  1145. what it felt

  1146. like to me

  1147. was that my

  1148. very life was

  1149. being crushed

  1150. out of me

  1151. as I was

  1152. continuing to

  1153. serve and

  1154. yet not

  1155. able to

  1156. impact people

  1157. in the way

  1158. that I'd

  1159. hoped.

  1160. And so

  1161. instead of

  1162. loving others

  1163. and seeking

  1164. the best of

  1165. others,

  1166. I grumbled

  1167. and complained

  1168. a lot

  1169. to people.

  1170. And I

  1171. found it

  1172. hard to

  1173. forgive others

  1174. as well.

  1175. And if

  1176. you've ever

  1177. been in a

  1178. situation where

  1179. somebody has

  1180. hurt you,

  1181. you will know

  1182. that it is

  1183. hard to

  1184. forgive others,

  1185. isn't it?

  1186. And yet,

  1187. if we're

  1188. going to be

  1189. people of

  1190. Christ,

  1191. people who

  1192. are forgiven,

  1193. that's something

  1194. we must

  1195. do,

  1196. isn't it?

  1197. I consider

  1198. that my

  1199. own life and

  1200. soul were

  1201. being crushed

  1202. by the

  1203. people that

  1204. I was with,

  1205. but in a

  1206. much more

  1207. real way,

  1208. I had

  1209. crushed the

  1210. life of

  1211. Christ by

  1212. my own

  1213. sin.

  1214. And yet,

  1215. Jesus would

  1216. turn and

  1217. say to

  1218. even those

  1219. who are

  1220. crucifying him,

  1221. or to

  1222. say to

  1223. God,

  1224. about those

  1225. who are

  1226. crucifying him,

  1227. Father,

  1228. forgive them,

  1229. for they do

  1230. not know

  1231. what they're

  1232. doing.

  1233. That's what

  1234. Jesus says

  1235. about us

  1236. too.

  1237. Father,

  1238. forgive them,

  1239. you,

  1240. me,

  1241. because we

  1242. didn't know

  1243. what we

  1244. were doing.

  1245. And so

  1246. we too

  1247. need to

  1248. turn and

  1249. forgive

  1250. others.

  1251. But who

  1252. can do

  1253. this?

  1254. Who has

  1255. the strength

  1256. to be able

  1257. to turn

  1258. and to

  1259. forgive?

  1260. To live

  1261. in such

  1262. a way

  1263. as to

  1264. actually

  1265. place other

  1266. people's

  1267. priorities

  1268. above their

  1269. own?

  1270. To think

  1271. of others

  1272. as more

  1273. significant

  1274. or more

  1275. important

  1276. than them?

  1277. I said

  1278. before that

  1279. that guy

  1280. who wrote

  1281. that book

  1282. wanted to

  1283. see all

  1284. this change

  1285. happening

  1286. in society,

  1287. but actually

  1288. wasn't seeing

  1289. anything of

  1290. the sort.

  1291. In fact,

  1292. he was

  1293. seeing the

  1294. reverse.

  1295. who can

  1296. provide

  1297. the

  1298. inner

  1299. moorings

  1300. for us

  1301. to be able

  1302. to live

  1303. in this

  1304. way?

  1305. Only

  1306. God.

  1307. In the

  1308. last part

  1309. of our

  1310. passage,

  1311. we see

  1312. that we

  1313. are told

  1314. to work

  1315. out our

  1316. salvation

  1317. and yet

  1318. that the

  1319. power and

  1320. the motivation

  1321. come from

  1322. God.

  1323. we are

  1324. to work

  1325. out our

  1326. salvation,

  1327. but it

  1328. is God

  1329. who works

  1330. in us.

  1331. What does

  1332. that mean?

  1333. Let me

  1334. read it

  1335. out.

  1336. Therefore,

  1337. my beloved,

  1338. as you have

  1339. always obeyed,

  1340. so now,

  1341. not only in

  1342. my presence,

  1343. but much more

  1344. in my absence,

  1345. work out your

  1346. own salvation

  1347. with fear and

  1348. trembling.

  1349. Okay,

  1350. just stop there

  1351. for a second.

  1352. What Paul

  1353. means by that

  1354. is,

  1355. as I've

  1356. already

  1357. said,

  1358. to take

  1359. what is

  1360. of the

  1361. mind of

  1362. Christ and

  1363. to live

  1364. it out

  1365. amongst us,

  1366. to take

  1367. the salvation

  1368. that we've

  1369. received,

  1370. the fact that

  1371. we know

  1372. that Christ

  1373. has died

  1374. for us,

  1375. and to

  1376. live it

  1377. out amongst

  1378. our

  1379. community.

  1380. Work out

  1381. your own

  1382. salvation,

  1383. the your

  1384. there is

  1385. plural.

  1386. But it

  1387. is then

  1388. God who

  1389. works in

  1390. you,

  1391. both to

  1392. will and

  1393. to work

  1394. for his

  1395. good

  1396. pleasure.

  1397. You see,

  1398. the power

  1399. and the

  1400. motivation

  1401. for us

  1402. come from

  1403. God.

  1404. We can't

  1405. try as

  1406. we might

  1407. pull ourselves

  1408. up by our

  1409. own bootstraps

  1410. to make

  1411. self-improvement

  1412. the goal of

  1413. the Christian

  1414. life.

  1415. The only

  1416. way that

  1417. we can

  1418. follow in

  1419. the way

  1420. of Christ

  1421. is if we're

  1422. actually

  1423. following

  1424. Christ.

  1425. And the

  1426. use of

  1427. human

  1428. effort

  1429. in this

  1430. is just

  1431. what God

  1432. commands

  1433. for achieving

  1434. his saving

  1435. purpose.

  1436. And we

  1437. do not

  1438. will and

  1439. work on

  1440. our own,

  1441. but our

  1442. wills and

  1443. our actions

  1444. are the

  1445. very areas,

  1446. the very

  1447. arenas,

  1448. where God's

  1449. power is

  1450. working in

  1451. us.

  1452. When God

  1453. put it like

  1454. this,

  1455. God's

  1456. working in

  1457. us is not

  1458. suspended

  1459. because we

  1460. work,

  1461. nor is our

  1462. working suspended

  1463. because God

  1464. works.

  1465. works.

  1466. So in

  1467. other words,

  1468. just because

  1469. we're working

  1470. doesn't mean

  1471. that God

  1472. is not

  1473. working in

  1474. us.

  1475. And just

  1476. because God

  1477. is working

  1478. in us doesn't

  1479. mean that we

  1480. just stop

  1481. working.

  1482. Neither is the

  1483. relation strictly

  1484. one of

  1485. cooperation,

  1486. but the

  1487. relation is

  1488. that because

  1489. God works,

  1490. we work.

  1491. Because God

  1492. wills and

  1493. works within

  1494. us,

  1495. that this is

  1496. what he wants

  1497. for us,

  1498. and the

  1499. way that

  1500. he uses

  1501. us to

  1502. live out

  1503. this salvation

  1504. amongst us,

  1505. because of

  1506. that,

  1507. we also

  1508. work at

  1509. it.

  1510. We work

  1511. out our

  1512. own salvation

  1513. together.

  1514. So the

  1515. question is

  1516. then,

  1517. do you

  1518. follow Jesus

  1519. or not?

  1520. If you

  1521. follow Jesus,

  1522. then you

  1523. need to

  1524. follow in

  1525. the way

  1526. of humility.

  1527. Who do

  1528. you follow?

  1529. Because if

  1530. you're not

  1531. following Jesus,

  1532. then you're

  1533. following something

  1534. else, or

  1535. you're prioritizing

  1536. something else

  1537. in your life,

  1538. whether it is

  1539. your own

  1540. ambition,

  1541. your own

  1542. happiness,

  1543. your own

  1544. self-seeking.

  1545. And the

  1546. final question

  1547. I want to

  1548. leave you with

  1549. is what are

  1550. we known

  1551. for?

  1552. As a

  1553. church of

  1554. Christ,

  1555. Christ,

  1556. we should

  1557. be known

  1558. for what

  1559. God is

  1560. known for,

  1561. or rather,

  1562. we should

  1563. actually be

  1564. reflecting out

  1565. to the

  1566. world this

  1567. God and

  1568. what He

  1569. is,

  1570. who He

  1571. is.

  1572. And what

  1573. He is,

  1574. is a God

  1575. of humility,

  1576. a God who

  1577. humbled Himself

  1578. to save

  1579. us,

  1580. a God who

  1581. will be

  1582. exalted,

  1583. a God who

  1584. will be

  1585. worshipped

  1586. by everybody.

  1587. This is the

  1588. kind of God

  1589. that I'm

  1590. happy to

  1591. follow,

  1592. and I hope

  1593. and I pray

  1594. that that's the

  1595. case for you

  1596. as well.

  1597. But it

  1598. means that we

  1599. should also be

  1600. a church that

  1601. is filled

  1602. with humility,

  1603. a church

  1604. where people

  1605. can come

  1606. together and

  1607. see that we

  1608. are a

  1609. humble people,

  1610. a people who

  1611. don't stand

  1612. on our own

  1613. achievements

  1614. and compare

  1615. ourselves to

  1616. one another,

  1617. who don't

  1618. grumble and

  1619. complain,

  1620. but people who

  1621. live together

  1622. in unity.

  1623. Let's pray.

  1624. Amen.

  1625. Amen.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. Amen.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. Amen.

  1640. Father, we

  1641. ask that you

  1642. would give us

  1643. again a vision

  1644. of who

  1645. Jesus is,

  1646. of the way

  1647. that he

  1648. came into

  1649. this earth,

  1650. giving up

  1651. everything that

  1652. he had so

  1653. that we could

  1654. come to know

  1655. you.

  1656. And we

  1657. ask that we

  1658. would adopt

  1659. that frame of

  1660. mind,

  1661. that we

  1662. would come

  1663. come to know

  1664. and experience

  1665. and to love

  1666. this humility

  1667. that Jesus

  1668. showed,

  1669. so that we

  1670. too would be

  1671. able to live

  1672. like this,

  1673. that we

  1674. would no longer

  1675. live with

  1676. ourselves as

  1677. number one,

  1678. but that we

  1679. would be able

  1680. to place

  1681. other people's

  1682. interests ahead

  1683. of our own,

  1684. that we would

  1685. be able to

  1686. count others

  1687. as more

  1688. significant than

  1689. us,

  1690. and that we

  1691. would be able

  1692. to rejoice

  1693. in these

  1694. things.

  1695. So we

  1696. pray this in

  1697. Jesus' name.

  1698. Amen.
