  1. The scripture reading today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 20.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  2. Please follow along in your bulletin.

  3. On one of the days while he was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel,

  4. the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted him,

  5. and they spoke, saying to him,

  6. Tell us by what authority you're doing these things,

  7. and who is the one who gave you this authority?

  8. Jesus answered and said to them,

  9. I will also ask you a question, and you tell me.

  10. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?

  11. They reasoned among themselves, saying,

  12. If we say from heaven, he will say,

  13. Why did you not believe him?

  14. But if we say from men, all the people will stone us to death,

  15. for they are convinced that John was a prophet.

  16. So they answered that they did not know where it came from.

  17. And Jesus said to them,

  18. Nor will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  19. And he began to tell the people a parable.

  20. A man planted a vineyard and rented it out to vine growers,

  21. and went on a journey for a long time.

  22. At the harvest time he sent a slave to the vine growers,

  23. so that they would give him some of the produce of the vineyard.

  24. But the vine growers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

  25. And he proceeded to send another slave.

  26. And they beat him also and treated him shamefully,

  27. and sent him away empty-handed.

  28. And he proceeded to send a third.

  29. And this one also they wounded and cast out.

  30. The owner of the vineyard said,

  31. What shall I do?

  32. I will send my beloved son.

  33. Perhaps they will respect him.

  34. But when the vine growers saw him,

  35. they reasoned with one another, saying,

  36. This is the heir.

  37. Let us kill him so that the inheritance will be ours.

  38. So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

  39. What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them?

  40. He will come and destroy these vine growers,

  41. and will give out the vineyard to others.

  42. When they heard it, they said,

  43. May it never be.

  44. But Jesus looked at them and said,

  45. What then is this that is written?

  46. The stone which the builders rejected,

  47. this became the chief cornerstone.

  48. Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces,

  49. but on whomever it falls,

  50. it will scatter him like dust.

  51. This is the word of the Lord.

  52. Think about that song.

  53. I keep thinking about it.

  54. The word, you're the one who saves us.

  55. You're the one who saves us.

  56. I wonder how often we sing that in our lives.

  57. I wonder how often we need to sing that in our lives,

  58. and we don't sing that in our lives.

  59. I've shared before that,

  60. okay, so we have four kids,

  61. and I would say that the place that I ask God to save me the most

  62. is in parenting,

  63. in being a dad,

  64. in being a husband,

  65. because I feel like I have very little good modeling in that area in my life.

  66. So I'm continually trying to figure out what to do and how to do that.

  67. I'm so thankful that we have a perfect Savior.

  68. That way my kids don't need a perfect dad, right?

  69. They can look to Christ.

  70. But today, even just kids getting dressed,

  71. and I had three of my daughters come in,

  72. and they asked me,

  73. does this outfit look nice?

  74. Well, how do you answer that with your daughters, right?

  75. I know how to answer that with my wife.

  76. Honey, does this make me look fat?

  77. No, you don't look fat at all.

  78. The dress looks really good.

  79. But how do you answer that with your daughters, right?

  80. And so I would look at it,

  81. and I said, okay, so what kind of style are you trying to get there?

  82. Okay, that's great.

  83. Okay, yeah, that looks good.

  84. And so we got dressed,

  85. and it's always a challenge to me to think about

  86. what does it mean to trust the Lord

  87. and to walk with Him and to be a parent.

  88. We needed, you're going to die,

  89. we needed some eggs and some bread in our house.

  90. And so we needed to go get it,

  91. and I was busy doing, I can't remember what I was doing.

  92. So I gave some money to one of my kids,

  93. who will remain nameless.

  94. And I sent them to go get the eggs and the bread.

  95. And right as they were walking out of the door,

  96. they asked me the question,

  97. if I have anything left,

  98. can I buy something for myself?

  99. I thought, that seemed like a reasonable request, right?

  100. And so I said, yeah, that's great.

  101. Go ahead and do that.

  102. And so they went.

  103. And they come back about 20 minutes later,

  104. chewing on a drumstick ice cream cone,

  105. and they have a whole box of drumstick ice cream cones

  106. in their bag.

  107. But they have no eggs or no bread.

  108. And I'm like, what happened?

  109. He goes, well, I didn't have enough money for eggs and bread.

  110. So as a parent there,

  111. you have some choices to make in your mind, right?

  112. So you're figuring out, okay,

  113. how do I respond to this?

  114. Part of me, I'm really angry, right?

  115. I'm really, because it's an authority issue, right?

  116. I'm like, I ask, well,

  117. why did you think that you could buy the ice cream

  118. instead of the eggs?

  119. And well, I just felt like it was a thing to do.

  120. And so there's an authority thing there, right?

  121. So the authority part of me is like, I'm furious.

  122. And then the other part of me is like,

  123. I'm just kind of laughing,

  124. because I don't,

  125. I never read that in a book,

  126. what to do when that happens, right?

  127. And so I'm trying to use this as a teachable moment.

  128. And so I'm asking myself, what do I do?

  129. Do I give the kid more money

  130. and have them go out and buy some bread and eggs?

  131. What if they come back with

  132. six-pack of Diet Coke or something else?

  133. And they say, well,

  134. I just didn't have enough money

  135. to buy the eggs and the bread.

  136. And I wondered about that in my life.

  137. And I kind of laughed,

  138. because I think that is sometimes me.

  139. God gives me resources.

  140. He gives me things that he wants me to use

  141. for his kingdom to make his name great.

  142. And I listen, I say, yeah, that's great.

  143. That's good, that's good.

  144. But then I end up buying him other things

  145. that I really need,

  146. like ice cream cones or other things like that.

  147. And I make the excuse,

  148. well, I didn't have enough money

  149. to make your kingdom great.

  150. If you give me more money, I can make it great,

  151. but I need to live.

  152. I need to get these things done.

  153. Luke 19,

  154. Jesus is finishing the last week of his life.

  155. He's up on Bethany,

  156. which is on the southeast corner of Jerusalem.

  157. Jerusalem sits on a hill.

  158. The only way you can attack Jerusalem

  159. was from the north,

  160. because it's the only place where it's flat.

  161. Everywhere else there's a valley.

  162. And in Bethany is where Lazarus came from.

  163. So he's going,

  164. and he's leading this group,

  165. and sometimes they were told

  166. it might be like 10,000 or 15,000 people joining him.

  167. And they're heading to Jerusalem for the Passover.

  168. And at that time in Jerusalem,

  169. Jerusalem would swell to like 2 million people.

  170. Normally there's about 350,000 people,

  171. but on the Passover,

  172. 2 million people, pilgrims,

  173. would come to take part in this.

  174. And so Jesus is on this hill,

  175. and he's looking down through the Kidron Valley,

  176. and he's looking up at Jerusalem,

  177. and he realizes what's going to happen

  178. this last week of his life.

  179. All the prophecy that he's going to fulfill,

  180. and so he sends his disciples in,

  181. and they go to a little house,

  182. and they grab a colt, a donkey.

  183. It's out of Zechariah.

  184. Instead of traveling into Jerusalem on a stallion,

  185. which would be the symbol of a king and a conqueror,

  186. Scripture, the prophets,

  187. hundreds of years before he was even born,

  188. said he would come in on a colt.

  189. The symbol of mildness,

  190. and gentleness, and meekness.

  191. And so he goes down this valley,

  192. and as he goes,

  193. people are yelling,

  194. and they're screaming,

  195. Hosanna!

  196. Hosanna!

  197. Everyone thinks this is it.

  198. The Messiah's come.

  199. We're going to be free.

  200. We're going to be free of the Romans.

  201. Everything's going to be perfect.

  202. They're taking off their coats.

  203. They're laying them on the ground.

  204. They're waving palm branches.

  205. Everybody,

  206. and this is really significant,

  207. because on this day in the Old Testament,

  208. Exodus 12,

  209. it tells us for the Passover,

  210. that this is the day that you buy your lamb

  211. without blemish,

  212. spotless and clean,

  213. and you bring that lamb into your home

  214. to take care of it,

  215. so that seven days later,

  216. you sacrifice it to cover your sins.

  217. And so this is the day that Jesus is entering in,

  218. the Lamb of God,

  219. into the temple,

  220. and people are going crazy,

  221. and it's a party,

  222. it's a rock festival,

  223. and the rabbis and the leaders come to him

  224. and say,

  225. tell your disciples to stop.

  226. Tell them to be quiet.

  227. This is unacceptable.

  228. Remember what Jesus said?

  229. He said,

  230. even if they stopped,

  231. the rocks would shout and sing

  232. because God has come.

  233. We're told that he gets there.

  234. He walks into the temple.

  235. He would have entered into the southern gate.

  236. It's the gate of the Gentiles,

  237. the court of the Gentiles.

  238. Now historians tell us,

  239. I've tried to verify this,

  240. and I've looked over,

  241. but what I've been told

  242. is that this is the first year this has happened,

  243. and what happened was

  244. that the leadership of the temple

  245. moved all the livestock,

  246. all the money changing,

  247. into the temple

  248. to be in that place this year.

  249. It's the court of the Gentiles,

  250. so if you were not a Jew,

  251. it's the only place that you could go into.

  252. But the Jews,

  253. the Gentiles couldn't go in there

  254. because it was stocked full of animals

  255. and money changers.

  256. And there's this racket going on

  257. that the church leadership had,

  258. and it was something like this.

  259. When you came into the temple,

  260. you had to pay a tax,

  261. but you had to pay a special tax.

  262. And this coin could only be seen

  263. in Godden at the temple.

  264. You couldn't buy it with you.

  265. So when you came in,

  266. let's say it was $1,

  267. you needed to buy a $1 tax,

  268. but you ended up having to pay $1.40

  269. to get that tax.

  270. And so you took that coin,

  271. and they just pocketed the $0.40,

  272. and they stuck it in the treasury

  273. as you walked in the church.

  274. There's a big racket.

  275. And Jesus says in the scripture,

  276. when he saw that,

  277. he became furious.

  278. It was an anger with righteousness

  279. kind of wound up in it.

  280. It says he makes his rope,

  281. and he starts to whip

  282. all of the money changers.

  283. He turns over the tables.

  284. He throws out the animals.

  285. There's this total chaos,

  286. and everybody's just in awe

  287. because in their mind,

  288. they're thinking this is it.

  289. The Messiah's coming.

  290. This is it.

  291. We're going to be free.

  292. This is it.

  293. This is all going to happen.

  294. Hallelujah.

  295. We've been waiting for this.

  296. Oppression's off.

  297. We're going to be free.

  298. And he walks in there,

  299. and he throws out

  300. all of these things,

  301. and then scripture tells us

  302. at Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  303. right at the very end,

  304. his disciples and him

  305. go into the temple,

  306. and they begin to teach.

  307. And basically,

  308. they stage a sit-in.

  309. And so they're teaching

  310. in the temple

  311. where the priest

  312. and the rabbi

  313. should be preaching,

  314. but Jesus has it under control,

  315. and they can't even get in

  316. because there's all these people

  317. listening to him.

  318. Remember what they said about Jesus?

  319. They said he preached

  320. in a way

  321. unlike any other man before.

  322. He preached with authority.

  323. With the leadership,

  324. they just can't handle this,

  325. and so in chapter 20,

  326. which you have in your bulletin,

  327. they come to him.

  328. And it's a very interesting passage,

  329. and in this passage,

  330. I just want to look at

  331. three things really quickly

  332. or briefly

  333. and talk about them

  334. and ask ourselves questions

  335. like what is going on

  336. in our life

  337. and what can we learn

  338. from these things.

  339. And in these passages,

  340. I just want to talk about

  341. three things.

  342. I want to talk about authority,

  343. the idea of authority,

  344. because Jesus was told

  345. to be teaching with authority

  346. that no one else

  347. had ever had before.

  348. I want to talk about

  349. the vineyard.

  350. There's this parable

  351. that's told.

  352. It's actually out of Isaiah,

  353. and Jesus retells this parable,

  354. and it's very powerful.

  355. I want to talk about the vineyard,

  356. and last,

  357. I want to talk really,

  358. it's kind of the core

  359. of everything.

  360. I want to talk about

  361. the vineyard owner.

  362. So the first thing

  363. that comes out

  364. in verses 1 through 8

  365. is you see they come to him,

  366. and they come at night,

  367. I mean, not at night,

  368. but all the chief priests,

  369. the scribes,

  370. and the elders,

  371. verse 1,

  372. that means everybody

  373. within the leadership.

  374. That's all three sections

  375. of the Jewish leadership

  376. at that time.

  377. So whenever they came together

  378. with something very,

  379. very serious,

  380. and so they come

  381. to confront him,

  382. and they ask him

  383. two questions in verse 2.

  384. They ask him,

  385. tell us by what authority

  386. you're doing these things,

  387. or basically ask him,

  388. are you coming as a prophet,

  389. are you coming as a priest,

  390. or are you coming as a king?

  391. Because they want to know.

  392. Are you coming as a king

  393. to set us free?

  394. Are you coming as a prophet

  395. to set us straight?

  396. Or are you coming as a priest

  397. to minister to us?

  398. Which way are you coming?

  399. What authority

  400. are you coming by?

  401. And then the second question

  402. they ask him is,

  403. who gave you this authority?

  404. authority,

  405. where did it come from?

  406. Now in Jesus' day,

  407. you always taught,

  408. like I taught last week,

  409. I gave this quote,

  410. and I said,

  411. hey, don't,

  412. it's not from me,

  413. it's from Jonathan Edwards,

  414. and Jonathan Edwards

  415. stole it from John Owen,

  416. and John Owen stole it

  417. from Tertullian,

  418. and Tertullian stole it

  419. from Paul,

  420. and Paul stole it

  421. from Jesus,

  422. and Jesus wrote it,

  423. and that's how you would

  424. teach in Jesus' day.

  425. That's where your authority

  426. came from.

  427. So I would be up here

  428. teaching,

  429. and I would say,

  430. well, Rabbi so-and-so

  431. says this,

  432. and then Rabbi so-and-so

  433. said this plus this,

  434. and then a long time ago,

  435. Rabbi so-and-so

  436. said this also,

  437. and as I taught that way,

  438. what I would be doing

  439. is establishing

  440. my authority,

  441. and so everybody

  442. would listen to me

  443. and go,

  444. wow,

  445. he's very well educated,

  446. he knows what he's

  447. talking about,

  448. we should listen to him,

  449. because he's not

  450. bringing anything new,

  451. he's bringing something

  452. the same.

  453. Now remember,

  454. in Jesus' day,

  455. if you were there

  456. and if you were a Christian,

  457. let's say we're all

  458. Christians here,

  459. we would be the rabbis,

  460. we would be the Pharisees,

  461. we would be the holders

  462. of the truth,

  463. and all these people

  464. coming in with Jesus,

  465. they would be the radicals,

  466. they would be the liberals,

  467. they would be the people

  468. who just came to faith,

  469. they would be the people

  470. who aren't mature,

  471. they don't know

  472. what's going on,

  473. and so when we saw

  474. Jesus coming in,

  475. the first question

  476. we would ask is,

  477. why are you doing this?

  478. Because all the authority

  479. is from us.

  480. You read the passage

  481. and you realize

  482. that the leaders

  483. did not think

  484. that they were breaking

  485. God's rules.

  486. You read the passage

  487. and you understand

  488. that the leaders

  489. did not think

  490. that they were rejecting God,

  491. they actually assumed

  492. that they had the right

  493. to govern their lives,

  494. they assumed

  495. that they had the right

  496. to govern these people,

  497. and so they want to know

  498. why Jesus thinks

  499. he has the right

  500. to do that,

  501. and so they asked

  502. him this question

  503. and as a good rabbi

  504. does in teaching,

  505. they always ask questions

  506. after questions

  507. and Jesus answered them

  508. and said,

  509. I'll ask you a question

  510. and you tell me,

  511. was the baptism of John

  512. from heaven or from men

  513. and they reasoned

  514. with themselves,

  515. if we say from heaven,

  516. then why don't you believe me

  517. because that's where

  518. my authority is coming from

  519. or if we say from men,

  520. they're going to storm me

  521. because the penalty

  522. for a false prophet

  523. was stoning,

  524. and if John was

  525. a false prophet

  526. and the rabbis

  527. allowed him to teach,

  528. then they were guilty

  529. of his sin

  530. and so they would

  531. have been stoned too

  532. and so they realized

  533. that they're in this

  534. untenable position

  535. when it talks about authority

  536. and they basically said,

  537. well, we don't know.

  538. We don't know.

  539. And Jesus said,

  540. well, I'm not going

  541. to tell you either

  542. and what I see

  543. from this passage

  544. and what I keep asking myself

  545. these last couple weeks

  546. is this,

  547. where does our authority

  548. come from?

  549. where does your authority

  550. come from?

  551. Why do you live the life

  552. that you live right now?

  553. Why do you make the choices

  554. that you make right now?

  555. The passage says

  556. that our authority

  557. only comes from one

  558. of two places.

  559. Verses three and four.

  560. Either our authority

  561. comes from God,

  562. the word there in Hebrew

  563. would be they said heaven,

  564. which means God,

  565. or our authority

  566. comes from men.

  567. And so the question

  568. we have to ask ourselves

  569. as we think about this

  570. is where,

  571. where does our authority

  572. really come from?

  573. I don't know if you've ever

  574. heard this

  575. or said this,

  576. but I've said this

  577. sometimes in my life.

  578. You know,

  579. I'm a Christian.

  580. I don't know what I think

  581. about this part of the Bible.

  582. This part of the Bible

  583. is really hard.

  584. It's very difficult.

  585. It's very confusing.

  586. I don't know if I can

  587. live my life

  588. the way Scripture

  589. tells me

  590. to live it

  591. right here.

  592. You know,

  593. I follow God

  594. and the Bible is good

  595. for some things,

  596. but you know,

  597. there are other things

  598. in the Bible,

  599. you know,

  600. like the sexuality

  601. and relationships

  602. and how we handle our money

  603. and things like that.

  604. You know,

  605. I think maybe it's kind of

  606. outdated for that

  607. because God,

  608. God wants me to be happy,

  609. right?

  610. Right?

  611. Where,

  612. where,

  613. where does our authority

  614. come from?

  615. Do we live our life

  616. in our own authority

  617. as these Pharisees did

  618. and not realizing

  619. that they were doing that?

  620. Because they didn't realize

  621. that they were doing that.

  622. They thought they were living

  623. under God's authority,

  624. but the Scripture

  625. is really clear

  626. that they weren't.

  627. They were living

  628. under their own authority.

  629. They didn't handle God's Word.

  630. They didn't know God's Word.

  631. They didn't allow God's Word

  632. to seep into them.

  633. They changed God's Word.

  634. They didn't like the Scriptures

  635. that quoted the things

  636. that were happening.

  637. I mean,

  638. all they had to do

  639. is look into the Old Testament

  640. and all the things

  641. that were happening

  642. to that point,

  643. it was really clearly

  644. told of.

  645. But they didn't like that.

  646. And I think sometimes

  647. we don't either.

  648. And I realize,

  649. if we're honest,

  650. sometimes in our life,

  651. we just want to be

  652. our own authority.

  653. We say we love God.

  654. We say we came to Christ

  655. at this time.

  656. But if you look at our life

  657. day by day by day,

  658. how we live it,

  659. the question is,

  660. are we living it

  661. according to God's Word

  662. or are we living it

  663. to our Word?

  664. One of the early church fathers

  665. said it this way.

  666. He said,

  667. sin is largely

  668. a matter of authority.

  669. We sin because

  670. we refuse God's authority.

  671. Well,

  672. when we sin,

  673. we reject God,

  674. we reject His Word,

  675. we reject His authority,

  676. and we replace it

  677. with something else.

  678. Us.

  679. The Bible says

  680. that we have a problem

  681. with authority

  682. that deep down

  683. in our heart

  684. there's this darkness

  685. that prevents us

  686. from wanting to obey.

  687. The Scripture actually says

  688. that we are angry

  689. towards God

  690. that we don't like

  691. His authority.

  692. And the Jewish leaders

  693. in this passage

  694. really, really show that.

  695. They would rather live life

  696. and run their lives

  697. the way they want to.

  698. But Jesus is presenting

  699. to them something else,

  700. something different.

  701. And the question

  702. we have to ask ourselves today

  703. is what authority

  704. do we live by?

  705. What do we do

  706. with that deep,

  707. dark struggle

  708. in our heart

  709. when we know

  710. we should buy

  711. the eggs

  712. in the bread

  713. but we want

  714. to buy something else?

  715. What we know

  716. in the deep,

  717. dark struggle

  718. in our heart

  719. when we know

  720. we should do

  721. certain things

  722. or we're called

  723. to bring comfort

  724. in healing

  725. but we're too busy.

  726. The Scripture says

  727. that we have

  728. a heart problem

  729. and there's this darkness

  730. there

  731. that even after

  732. we've come to Christ

  733. we still struggle

  734. with it,

  735. we still deal with it,

  736. we still have to face it.

  737. And the problem

  738. is that most of us,

  739. a lot of us

  740. don't even realize

  741. that we struggle.

  742. the problem

  743. is that most of us

  744. don't like

  745. having somebody

  746. in authority

  747. above us.

  748. Think about that.

  749. Do you really like

  750. to know

  751. that you're under

  752. somebody else's authority?

  753. I mean,

  754. how do you do

  755. in the speed limits?

  756. How do you do

  757. with the signs?

  758. I mean,

  759. Kip and I

  760. love to play baseball

  761. and we throw baseball

  762. on a podium.

  763. We were so fortunate

  764. there's this big podium

  765. right around the house

  766. and so we go out

  767. maybe once every week

  768. throw pitch

  769. and last week

  770. we went out

  771. and there was a sign there

  772. that said

  773. no throwing balls.

  774. It had never been there

  775. before.

  776. Ever.

  777. But this time

  778. the sign was right

  779. in front of my face

  780. no throwing balls.

  781. Kip looked at me

  782. and said,

  783. what are we going to do?

  784. Wow,

  785. I wish I could say

  786. I was just the person

  787. perfect dad

  788. and like,

  789. yeah,

  790. you know,

  791. we got to obey

  792. our authority

  793. and they're putting

  794. it above us

  795. and I kind of

  796. took the sign

  797. and I kind of

  798. turned it around

  799. backwards.

  800. I said,

  801. just one time.

  802. But the scripture

  803. says that our whole life

  804. is about turning

  805. signs around

  806. backwards

  807. because we don't

  808. like to be

  809. in authority.

  810. We don't like

  811. people to have

  812. authority over us.

  813. And so the question

  814. this passage brings up

  815. which is the question

  816. for you and me

  817. is where does

  818. our authority

  819. come from?

  820. How do we live

  821. our lives?

  822. How do we know

  823. that we're living

  824. for God

  825. and how do we know

  826. that we're living

  827. for ourselves?

  828. How do we know

  829. that we're not

  830. under God's authority?

  831. How do you know

  832. when you're not living

  833. the way God

  834. wants you to?

  835. Who tells you?

  836. I mean if you're

  837. fortunate you have

  838. a friend or a spouse

  839. or somebody in your

  840. community group

  841. that says,

  842. dude, that's just wrong.

  843. But sometimes we don't.

  844. And what happens

  845. when we don't?

  846. The leaders were

  847. blinded

  848. to their blindness.

  849. They thought they

  850. were doing the right

  851. thing.

  852. They thought that they

  853. were living under

  854. God's rules.

  855. They thought that

  856. they were obeying

  857. the Lord.

  858. They thought that

  859. they were checking

  860. off all the boxes.

  861. They thought that

  862. they were under

  863. the right authority

  864. and they were the

  865. authority and they

  866. were helping everybody

  867. else be under their

  868. authority.

  869. But Jesus says that

  870. they were under

  871. man's authority.

  872. We either live today

  873. under our authority

  874. or under God's

  875. authority.

  876. Can I give you a hint

  877. that I'm learning

  878. in myself?

  879. I realize

  880. that if I'm living

  881. under God's authority

  882. I will always be

  883. challenged in my

  884. selfishness.

  885. Because there's

  886. this selfishness

  887. inside of me

  888. that I struggle with.

  889. And if I'm not

  890. struggling with that

  891. selfishness,

  892. for me,

  893. it's a very good

  894. indicator that I'm

  895. living under my

  896. authority.

  897. Because all rules are

  898. off and I can do

  899. whatever makes me feel

  900. good and I can turn

  901. the signs and all

  902. those things.

  903. But if I'm

  904. struggling with that

  905. selfishness,

  906. if I realize the

  907. depth of how

  908. depraved and how

  909. selfish I am,

  910. it's a sign for me

  911. that God's authority

  912. is being lived out

  913. in my life.

  914. And the amazing

  915. thing about that is

  916. as that happens,

  917. he gives me grace

  918. to continue on.

  919. He gives me grace

  920. to continue on

  921. under his authority.

  922. So authority,

  923. whose authority are

  924. you under?

  925. Yourself's or God's?

  926. Really?

  927. And how do you know

  928. when you're not?

  929. The next thing this

  930. passage screams out

  931. to me is just this

  932. idea of the vineyard.

  933. You know,

  934. sometimes I've used

  935. these ten verses

  936. when someone comes

  937. to me and they say,

  938. hey, can you give me

  939. a CliffsNotes,

  940. a short version

  941. of the Bible,

  942. what the Bible's all

  943. about,

  944. what the story

  945. of the Bible's all

  946. about?

  947. Can you just give me

  948. like a brief synopsis

  949. of what the Bible's

  950. all about?

  951. Sometimes I take them

  952. to this parable.

  953. Because I think

  954. within this parable,

  955. within these ten

  956. sentences,

  957. is God's whole story

  958. lived out.

  959. God's whole creation

  960. plan lived out.

  961. And what do we learn

  962. about this vineyard?

  963. Well, what we learn

  964. is a couple things.

  965. We learn that the

  966. vineyard was made

  967. by God or the owner.

  968. In Matthew 21

  969. and Mark 11,

  970. it tells the story again

  971. and it even gives you

  972. a better picture

  973. of the vineyard.

  974. This vineyard was massive.

  975. He dug this deep trench

  976. around it,

  977. these high walls

  978. to protect it.

  979. It was interwoven

  980. with vines and stickers

  981. so no animals could get in.

  982. There was a big tower

  983. in the center of it

  984. so that you could look

  985. out for your enemies

  986. but you also can go

  987. underneath it for the shade

  988. and be protected.

  989. There's a big wine press

  990. in the middle of it

  991. so you could do all your work

  992. and live within that community

  993. and everything you needed,

  994. everything that you needed

  995. was there.

  996. In the passage,

  997. it says that the vineyard owner

  998. produced it,

  999. he made it

1000. and he just opened it up

  1001. for us to use

1002. and to be a part of it.

  1003. So that everything

  1004. in the vineyard

1005. was made by the vineyard owner

  1006. or God,

1007. we also see that everything

  1008. in the vineyard

1009. was expected to produce fruit.

  1010. I mean,

  1011. you wouldn't make a vineyard

1012. if he didn't expect produce,

  1013. right?

1014. So everything in the vineyard

1015. was made to produce produce.

1016. We see that the vineyard owner

  1017. isn't greedy.

  1018. He's not a mean owner.

  1019. I mean,

  1020. basically,

  1021. he lets the people

  1022. go into the vineyard

1023. and do whatever they want.

  1024. He basically says,

  1025. hey,

  1026. here's the vineyard.

1027. You take care of it.

1028. You use the resources in it.

  1029. You produce whatever kind

1030. of grapes you want to make,

  1031. whatever kind of wine

  1032. you want to make.

  1033. You can do whatever

  1034. you want in it.

  1035. This is my vineyard

1036. but I'm giving it to you

  1037. to use.

  1038. You do this.

  1039. Hands off.

  1040. I'm going away

  1041. on a long trip

  1042. but there's one thing

  1043. that I expect.

  1044. I expect fruit.

  1045. I expect produce.

  1046. So the vineyard

  1047. is this amazing place

  1048. that the creator made

  1049. and gave to us.

  1050. He's given us

  1051. all this freedom.

  1052. He's allowed us

1053. to do all these things.

  1054. He's allowed us

  1055. to have our hand

  1056. in creating

  1057. and changing

  1058. and fixing creation

  1059. but the problem is

  1060. that sometimes

1061. when we live in a vineyard

  1062. for a long time

  1063. and the owner

  1064. hasn't come back,

  1065. we start to think

  1066. that we're the owner.

  1067. Right?

  1068. I mean,

  1069. sometimes

  1070. if we've lived in a vineyard

  1071. for a long time

  1072. and we've done

  1073. some amazing things

  1074. with the vineyard,

  1075. we start to think,

  1076. wow,

  1077. wow,

  1078. I did this.

  1079. I mean,

  1080. the world around us

1081. is going to encourage us

  1082. to think that way,

  1083. right?

  1084. I mean,

1085. you made it in Oxford.

  1086. You passed the test.

  1087. You presented that thing

  1088. so well.

  1089. You brought yourself

  1090. to this place.

  1091. You're the authority.

  1092. You made it.

  1093. The struggle is sometimes,

  1094. I think,

1095. deep down inside of us

1096. we want to believe that

  1097. but we know

  1098. that it's not true

  1099. and the fact

  1100. that it's not true

  1101. kind of makes

  1102. me angry

1103. because I want to be able

1104. to say I did it all

  1105. by myself.

  1106. I want to say

1107. I'm the one who did it.

  1108. I want to say

  1109. I made it.

  1110. I manifest destiny.

  1111. I came across

1112. and I cleared the land

  1113. and I did it.

  1114. I did it.

  1115. It's all mine.

  1116. But the rules

  1117. of the vineyard

  1118. say something

  1119. totally different.

1120. The rules of the vineyard

1121. say that it's not ours

1122. that was given to us

  1123. and everything within it

  1124. is somebody else's.

  1125. Maybe the question

  1126. we should ask ourselves

  1127. is

1128. who are we working for?

  1129. I mean really?

  1130. Who

1131. who are we working for?

1132. Are we working for ourselves?

  1133. Or are we working

  1134. for the true owner?

  1135. I mean I think

  1136. the problem sometimes

1137. is we don't even recognize

  1138. that we're acting

  1139. like owners.

  1140. How do you realize

  1141. when you're acting

  1142. like an owner?

  1143. Jesus talked about it

  1144. really clearly

  1145. in the passage

  1146. and the problem is

1147. as we look at it

1148. as we think about it

1149. as we look at our finances

1150. as we look at our gifts

1151. as we look at our talents

1152. as we look at all these things

  1153. that we've been able

  1154. to accomplish

  1155. and do

  1156. within the vineyard

  1157. because the owner

  1158. has been away

  1159. for so long

  1160. we start to doubt

  1161. whether he's ever

  1162. going to come back.

  1163. you start to think

  1164. that the things

  1165. are ours.

  1166. The leaders

  1167. in this passage

  1168. didn't understand this.

  1169. They thought

  1170. that Jerusalem

  1171. the Jewish people

  1172. the temple

  1173. was all theirs

  1174. until 70 AD

  1175. when Titus

1176. led the Roman army in

  1177. and destroyed everything

  1178. and the Jewish nation

  1179. ceased to exist

  1180. from that point on.

1181. You're never going to find

  1182. in history again

  1183. the idea of priest.

1184. You're never going to find

  1185. in history again

  1186. the idea of scribes.

1187. You're never going to find

  1188. in history again

  1189. the idea of elders

  1190. within the Jewish nation.

1191. If you go to the day

  1192. they're just teachers

  1193. and there's rabbis

  1194. because those guys

  1195. thought that the vineyard

  1196. was theirs

  1197. they clung to it

  1198. they said

1199. this is what we've done

  1200. we've made

  1201. all these things

1202. and it was taken away.

  1203. Finally

1204. and I think this is

  1205. the main point

  1206. of this passage

  1207. this is the point

  1208. that sticks out

1209. to me over and over

  1210. and it's what

  1211. I've been challenged to.

  1212. At the time

  1213. of the harvest

  1214. he sent a slave

  1215. to the vine growers

  1216. and so they would

1217. give him some of the

  1218. produce of the vineyard

  1219. but the vine growers

  1220. beat him

  1221. and sent him away

  1222. empty handed.

  1223. And he proceeded

  1224. to send another slave

  1225. and they beat him

  1226. also

  1227. and they treated

  1228. him shamefully

  1229. and they sent

  1230. him away

  1231. empty handed

  1232. and he proceeded

  1233. to send a third

  1234. slave

  1235. and they treated

  1236. him

  1237. and they wounded

  1238. him

  1239. the word trauma

  1240. and they cast

  1241. him out

  1242. and the vineyard

  1243. looks around

  1244. and he tells

  1245. this story

  1246. as Jesus

  1247. is talking

  1248. and this would

  1249. be a very

  1250. powerful story

  1251. guys

  1252. because Jesus

  1253. is in the temple

  1254. we're told

  1255. that the temple

  1256. is decorated

  1257. by this huge

  1258. carving

  1259. of a vine

  1260. it was a symbol

  1261. of Israel

  1262. and Herod

  1263. started it

  1264. it was over

  1265. 130 feet tall

  1266. and it was inlaid

  1267. with gold

  1268. and whenever

  1269. a wealthy person

  1270. came into the temple

  1271. they would donate

  1272. jewels

  1273. to be the grapes

  1274. of this vineyard

  1275. and so Jesus

  1276. is teaching this story

  1277. with this vine

  1278. as the backdropping

  1279. so everybody

  1280. is looking at him

  1281. they're looking at him

  1282. looking at that

  1283. looking at that

  1284. looking at that

  1285. so they understand

  1286. what he's saying

  1287. and the owner

  1288. sends all of these

  1289. people in

  1290. and patiently

  1291. he comes

  1292. to them

  1293. and he sends

  1294. messengers to them

  1295. trying to remind them

  1296. that they're not

  1297. the owners

  1298. and the tenants

  1299. continually beat them

  1300. and in verse 13

  1301. there's this pause

  1302. in the original language

  1303. and the owner

  1304. pauses

  1305. and he says

  1306. what should I do

  1307. I will send

  1308. my beloved son

  1309. it's the same wording

  1310. that is used

  1311. when Jesus was baptized

  1312. remember John

  1313. sends Jesus down

1314. and the dove lands on it

  1315. and God speaks

  1316. and says

  1317. behold my beloved son

  1318. in whom I'm well

  1319. please listen to him

  1320. it's the same word

  1321. and so the owner

  1322. takes this pause

  1323. and he goes

  1324. what should I do

  1325. what should I do

  1326. in Hebrew culture

  1327. what it says

  1328. that he's doing

  1329. is he's taking

  1330. his anger

  1331. and he's turning it

  1332. into grace

  1333. you think about that

  1334. for a second

  1335. what if you're living

  1336. the ideal

  1337. Hong Kong life

  1338. you have your

  1339. three apartments

  1340. you're living in one

  1341. you're renting out two

  1342. it's time for rent

  1343. people go to collect

  1344. your rent

  1345. and the people living

  1346. in the apartments

  1347. beat them up

  1348. this is our apartment

1349. this is not your apartment

  1350. what do you do

  1351. would you send

  1352. a second person

  1353. would you send

  1354. a third person

  1355. everybody listening

  1356. to this story

  1357. in Jesus day

  1358. would have been amazed

  1359. because all the rules

  1360. would have said

  1361. after the first break

  1362. you send the army

  1363. and the army

  1364. gets rid of everybody

1365. you send your hired thugs

  1366. and they do business

  1367. on those people

  1368. when they break

  1369. their arms and legs

1370. and they're out of there

  1371. but Jesus tells

  1372. this story

  1373. of this landowner

  1374. who continually

  1375. continually

  1376. continually

  1377. sends people

  1378. to wake us up

  1379. to remind us

  1380. that we're not

  1381. the owners

  1382. the word there

1383. is a very special word

  1384. and I don't like

  1385. talking all these

  1386. Greek words

  1387. but this word

  1388. is only used

  1389. this one time

  1390. and there's not a word

  1391. in English

  1392. that means it

  1393. in Arabic

  1394. there's a word

  1395. kind of

  1396. that means it

  1397. halim

  1398. and it basically

  1399. is this idea

  1400. that he puts aside

  1401. his anger

  1402. he turns his anger

  1403. into grace

  1404. he's patient

  1405. he's long suffering

  1406. he's risk taking

  1407. he's compassionate

  1408. he's self sacrificing

  1409. he's gentle

  1410. all these things

  1411. are rolled up

  1412. into this word

  1413. and Jesus says

  1414. this is what

  1415. the character

  1416. of the landowner is

  1417. Jesus says

  1418. this is what

  1419. the character

  1420. of God

  1421. is

  1422. so everybody

  1423. listening to this

  1424. would have been

  1425. freaked out

  1426. they would have

  1427. understood

  1428. that this is wrong

  1429. because he's been

  1430. dishonored

  1431. you should go in

  1432. and you should

  1433. kill these people

  1434. get rid of them

  1435. but Jesus

  1436. continually reminds us

  1437. and continually shows us

  1438. of how gracious

  1439. God is

  1440. think about it

  1441. in your life

  1442. maybe you've come

  1443. to Christ

  1444. how many messengers

1445. did God send to you

  1446. before you realized

  1447. that you weren't

  1448. the owner

  1449. statistically

  1450. there's an average

  1451. of 23 people

  1452. that enter

  1453. into a person's life

  1454. and share the gospel

  1455. and share their testimony

  1456. and before someone says

  1457. wow this

  1458. something's here

1459. I need to pray about this

1460. or I need to think about this

  1461. how many messengers

  1462. did God send

  1463. into your life

  1464. what would have happened

  1465. if God stopped

  1466. at the first messenger

  1467. the first time

  1468. Johnny told me

  1469. of why I needed

  1470. to go to church

1471. and I laughed at him

  1472. I said

1473. you gotta be kidding me

  1474. what would have happened

  1475. if the landowner

  1476. had stopped

  1477. and so he says

  1478. he's gonna do

  1479. one more thing

  1480. this incredible act

  1481. of mercy

  1482. this incredible act

  1483. of grace

  1484. this incredible act

  1485. of compassion

  1486. this incredible act

  1487. of long suffering

  1488. this incredible act

  1489. of gentleness

  1490. he says

  1491. I'm going to send

  1492. my son

  1493. my beloved son

  1494. I've never heard

  1495. anything like this

  1496. before have you

  1497. one of the things

  1498. I grew up

1499. my dad was in the military

1500. and one of the neat things

1501. about being in the military

1502. is my dad became a teacher

  1503. for other military officers

1504. and we had a lot of

  1505. Middle Eastern officers

  1506. in our home

  1507. we would talk

  1508. and things like that

1509. and we had these big parties

  1510. and I remember hearing

  1511. this story one time

1512. and it stuck in my head

  1513. I never forgot it

1514. because it was just so weird

  1515. that I couldn't believe it

1516. and he told this story

1517. one day in the 1980s

  1518. when King Hussein

1519. who was King of Jordan

  1520. at that time

  1521. was at a party

  1522. and one of his

  1523. achetes came in

  1524. and said

1525. hey I got to tell you this

  1526. in the building

  1527. over there

  1528. there's 75

  1529. senior officers

1530. who are playing a coup

  1531. right now

  1532. they're playing a coup

  1533. to overthrow the government

  1534. to kill you

  1535. and take over Jordan

1536. what are you going to do

1537. you want me to send

  1538. the soldiers in

  1539. to arrest everybody

  1540. and my friend said

  1541. this is what

  1542. King Hussein said

  1543. he said no

  1544. call a helicopter

1545. so he got on a helicopter

  1546. all by himself

1547. he flew over to the top

  1548. of the building

  1549. left his gun

  1550. in the helicopter

  1551. turned to the pilot

  1552. and said

  1553. if you hear shooting

  1554. leave without me

1555. he walks down the building

  1556. into this big room

  1557. where there's 75 officers

  1558. planning a coup

1559. and he looks at him

  1560. and he says

  1561. gentlemen

1562. it's come to my attention

  1563. that everyone in here

  1564. is playing a coup

1565. to take over the government

  1566. don't do that

1567. because if you do that

  1568. the government

  1569. will be fractured

  1570. the military

  1571. will be fractured

  1572. and thousands of people

  1573. will lose their lives

  1574. if all it takes

  1575. is me dying

  1576. here I am

1577. you can kill me now

  1578. and the story goes

  1579. that when the officers

  1580. heard that

  1581. and they saw that

1582. and they saw the love

  1583. and compassion

  1584. that King Hussein

  1585. put forth towards them

1586. they all ran to him

  1587. and embraced him

  1588. and pledged allegiance

1589. for the rest of their lives

1590. but here we have a story

  1591. that's so much greater

1592. than the King of Jordan

  1593. we have a story

  1594. that we are farmers

  1595. on this vineyard

1596. that the good vine owner

  1597. gave us

1598. that we're living our lives

  1599. we're producing these things

1600. we're living under our authority

  1601. and continually and continually

1602. he sends messengers to us

  1603. he says

  1604. it's not yours

1605. if you live under your authority

  1606. you're in trouble

1607. if you live according to your rules

1608. ultimately you're going to fail

1609. I have a better plan for you

1610. I have something so much greater for you

1611. if you can just trust me

1612. and over and over and over

1613. God sends messengers to us

1614. to show us his mercy

  1615. and his grace

1616. I have one last question

  1617. how do you feel

  1618. when you hear that

1619. does that story of the vineyard

1620. does this story of what goes on

1621. in your life right now

  1622. does that move you

1623. when you think of God's grace

  1624. in God's mercy

  1625. in God's gentleness

  1626. in your life

  1627. how do you respond

  1628. Jesus goes on

1629. and he shares the ending

  1630. of the story

  1631. which is incredibly

  1632. harsh

  1633. harsh

  1634. and real

  1635. it's a story of judgment

1636. often we don't talk about it

  1637. in churches

  1638. because people don't like

1639. to hear the idea of this

  1640. in churches

1641. that we're going to be

  1642. held accountable

1643. and something's going to happen

  1644. one day

  1645. if we don't

  1646. listen to the messengers

  1647. if we don't understand

  1648. grace

  1649. if we don't understand

1650. what Christ has done for us

  1651. to move us

  1652. and to change us

  1653. and to mold

  1654. our way of thinking

  1655. and doing

  1656. and being

  1657. the passage

  1658. probably says

1659. that if it doesn't move you

1660. then you have a lot of

  1661. heart questions

  1662. to ask

1663. and you need to figure out

  1664. today

  1665. whose authority

  1666. you're living

  1667. under

  1668. everyone who falls

  1669. on that stone

  1670. will be broken

  1671. to pieces

  1672. but on whomever

  1673. it falls

  1674. it will scatter them

  1675. like dust

  1676. authority

  1677. who's your authority

  1678. in your life

  1679. the garden

  1680. who are you working

  1681. for today

  1682. the father

  1683. how do you respond

  1684. to his love

  1685. and his message

  1686. is there

  1687. over and over

  1688. and over again

  1689. in the gospels

  1690. the parable

  1691. of the dinner

  1692. the parable

  1693. of the sun

  1694. running away

  1695. the parable

  1696. of the vine growers

  1697. the story says

1698. that we have a God

  1699. who's so gracious

  1700. and so amazing

  1701. and continually

  1702. continually

  1703. continually

  1704. pursues us

  1705. and the question

  1706. is

  1707. what do we do

  1708. with that

  1709. how do we

  1710. respond

  1711. father we just

  1712. thank you for

  1713. this day

  1714. we thank you

  1715. for your words

  1716. that are

  1717. overwhelming

  1718. I confess

  1719. that when I

  1720. hear this story

  1721. and I think

  1722. about these

  1723. things

  1724. sometimes

  1725. I

  1726. am disturbed

  1727. and I'm angry

  1728. because there's

  1729. just sometimes

  1730. I want to be

  1731. my own authority

  1732. and I want to

  1733. live my life

  1734. my own way

  1735. and what I

  1736. realize

  1737. that there's

  1738. some of us

  1739. in here

  1740. who are like

  1741. that right

  1742. now

  1743. there's some

  1744. of us here

  1745. when we hear

  1746. this story

  1747. we say

  1748. well so what

  1749. what a stupid

  1750. owner

  1751. why would he

  1752. waste his

  1753. son

  1754. but your

  1755. word

  1756. your story

  1757. your authority

  1758. centers around

  1759. your son

  1760. whom you

  1761. send

  1762. to free

  1763. us

  1764. from the

  1765. darkness

  1766. of our

  1767. hearts

  1768. and our

  1769. own

  1770. authority

  1771. Lord I

  1772. pray for

  1773. those of

  1774. us in

  1775. here

  1776. who

  1777. right

  1778. now

  1779. are

  1780. just

  1781. realizing

  1782. for the

  1783. first

  1784. time

  1785. that

  1786. they're

  1787. living

  1788. by

  1789. their

  1790. authority

  1791. and not

  1792. yours

  1793. I

  1794. pray

  1795. Lord

  1796. that

  1797. they

  1798. would

  1799. just

  1800. feel

  1801. your

  1802. mercy

  1803. and

  1804. grace

  1805. upon

  1806. them

  1807. they

  1808. would

  1809. realize

  1810. that

  1811. this

  1812. is

  1813. something

  1814. that

  1815. is

  1816. going

  1817. to

  1818. happen

  1819. throughout

  1820. their

  1821. whole

  1822. life

  1823. as

  1824. they

  1825. struggle

  1826. with

  1827. whose

  1828. authority

  1829. they're

  1830. in

  1831. but

  1832. they

  1833. realize

  1834. how

  1835. merciful

  1836. and

  1837. gracious

  1838. you

  1839. are

  1840. and

  1841. they

  1842. come

  1843. to

  1844. you

  1845. for

  1846. forgiveness

  1847. for

  1848. healing

  1849. Lord

  1850. I

  1851. pray

  1852. for

  1853. those

  1854. of

  1855. us

  1856. who

  1857. are

  1858. in

  1859. here

  1860. and

  1861. we've

  1862. been

  1863. digging

  1864. for

  1865. a

  1866. while

  1867. and

  1868. it's

  1869. been

  1870. so

  1871. long

  1872. since

  1873. we've

  1874. heard

  1875. from

  1876. you

  1877. or

  1878. we

  1879. wonder

  1880. just

  1881. like

  1882. Theophilus

  1883. wrote

  1884. when

  1885. Luke

  1886. wrote

  1887. this

  1888. gospel

  1889. is

  1890. Jesus

  1891. really

  1892. real

  1893. and

  1894. is

  1895. he

  1896. really

  1897. powerful

  1898. and

  1899. is

  1900. he

  1901. really

  1902. in

  1903. authority

  1904. because

  1905. I

  1906. haven't

  1907. seen

  1908. him

  1909. in

  1910. a

  1911. while

  1912. would

  1913. I

  1914. pray

  1915. for

  1916. those

  1917. of

  1918. us

  1919. in

  1920. here

  1921. like

  1922. that

  1923. that

  1924. you

  1925. would

  1926. heal

  1927. our

  1928. hearts

  1929. that

  1930. we

  1931. would

  1932. see

  1933. the

  1934. mercy

  1935. and

  1936. grace

  1937. of

  1938. the

  1939. cross

  1940. that

  1941. we

  1942. would

  1943. see

  1944. your

  1945. gentleness

  1946. and your

  1947. goodness

  1948. and your

  1949. long

  1950. suffering

  1951. that

  1952. we

  1953. would

  1954. realize

  1955. over

  1956. and

  1957. over

  1958. the

  1959. messengers

  1960. that

  1961. you

  1962. continue

  1963. to

  1964. send

  1965. to

  1966. us

  1967. to

  1968. you

  1969. that

  1970. we

  1971. understand

  1972. that

  1973. judgment

  1974. the

  1975. stone

  1976. the

  1977. rock

  1978. is

  1979. the

  1980. last

  1981. thing

  1982. that

  1983. you

  1984. want

  1985. to

  1986. do

  1987. it's

  1988. the

  1989. unusual

  1990. thing

  1991. as

  1992. the

  1993. prophets

  1994. would

  1995. say

  1996. but

  1997. your

  1998. usual

  1999. operation

  2000. is

  2001. mercy

  2002. and

  2003. grace

  2004. and

  2005. compassion

  2006. so

  2007. Lord

  2008. I

  2009. pray

  2010. that

  2011. we

  2012. would

  2013. embrace

  2014. that

  2015. as

  2016. a

  2017. church

  2018. help

  2019. us

  2020. to

  2021. be

  2022. a

  2023. people

  2024. of

  2025. mercy

  2026. help

  2027. us

  2028. to

  2029. be

  2030. a

  2031. people

  2032. of

  2033. grace

  2034. help

  2035. us

  2036. to

  2037. be

  2038. changed

  2039. as

  2040. we

  2041. reflect

  2042. on

  2043. all

  2044. these

  2045. things

  2046. that

  2047. you've

  2048. done

  2049. for

  2050. us

  2051. and

  2052. in

  2053. us

  2054. and

  2055. we

  2056. don't

  2057. deserve

  2058. them

  2059. and

  2060. we

  2061. know

  2062. that

  2063. deep

  2064. in

  2065. our

  2066. heart

  2067. we

  2068. might

  2069. say

  2070. that

  2071. we

  2072. yeah

  2073. we

  2074. worked

  2075. really

  2076. hard

  2077. we

  2078. kind

  2079. of

  2080. deserve

  2081. this

  2082. but

  2083. we

  2084. know

  2085. that

  2086. that's

  2087. not

  2088. true

  2089. because

  2090. you've

  2091. given

  2092. us

  2093. everything

  2094. Lord

  2095. help us

  2096. to be

  2097. a

  2098. church

  2099. that

  2100. changes

  2101. people

  2102. that

  2103. we

  2104. touch

  2105. as

  2106. they

  2107. see

  2108. the

  2109. lives

  2110. of

  2111. community

  2112. being

  2113. lived

  2114. out

  2115. as

  2116. they

  2117. see

  2118. people

  2119. who

  2120. are

  2121. radically

  2122. generous

  2123. with

  2124. the

  2125. resources

  2126. that

  2127. they're

  2128. given

  2129. as

  2130. they

  2131. see

  2132. mercy

  2133. and

  2134. grace

  2135. changing

  2136. people

  2137. that

  2138. they

  2139. never

  2140. thought

  2141. would

  2142. be

  2143. changed

  2144. Lord

  2145. help us

  2146. to be

  2147. your

  2148. hands

  2149. and

  2150. your

  2151. feet

  2152. and

  2153. to

  2154. trust

  2155. you

  2156. to

  2157. be

  2158. good

  2159. and

  2160. Lord

  2161. amidst

  2162. all

  2163. this

  2164. we

  2165. just

  2166. realize

  2167. continually

  2168. the

  2169. attitude

  2170. and

  2171. actions

  2172. of

  2173. our

  2174. hearts

  2175. we

  2176. realize

  2177. that

  2178. the

  2179. darkness

  2180. is

  2181. there

  2182. and

  2183. we

  2184. continually

  2185. struggle

  2186. with

  2187. it

  2188. that

  2189. we

  2190. unthrone

  2191. you

  2192. and we

  2193. put

  2194. you

  2195. back

  2196. and we

  2197. put

  2198. ourselves

  2199. in

  2200. there

  2201. over

  2202. and

  2203. over

  2204. and

  2205. over

  2206. and

  2207. we

  2208. put

  2209. us

  2210. amongst

  2211. the

  2212. people

  2213. a

  2214. community

  2215. that

  2216. speaks

  2217. the

  2218. gospel

  2219. to

  2220. us

  2221. regularly

  2222. that

  2223. encourages

  2224. us

  2225. when

  2226. we've

  2227. lost

  2228. vision

  2229. that

  2230. inspires

  2231. us

  2232. with

  2233. obedience

  2234. even

  2235. when

  2236. it's

  2237. not

  2238. convenient

  2239. that

  2240. shows

  2241. us

  2242. everything

  2243. that

  2244. we've

  2245. been

  2246. given

  2247. is

  2248. yours

  2249. and

  2250. we

  2251. go

  2252. on

  2253. a

  2254. journey

  2255. to

  2256. use

  2257. those

  2258. together

  2259. for

  2260. your

  2261. kingdom

  2262. Father

  2263. we

  2264. love

  2265. you

  2266. and

  2267. we

  2268. need

  2269. you

  2270. and

  2271. we

  2272. pray

  2273. these

  2274. things

  2275. in

  2276. your

  2277. son

  2278. amen
