  1. The scripture reading this morning comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapters 20 and 21.

    Luke 20 chapter mention

  2. Please follow in your bulletin.

  3. Now there came to him some of the Sadducees who say that there is no resurrection,

  4. and they questioned him saying,

  5. Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife, and he is childless,

  6. his brother should marry his wife and raise up children to his brother.

  7. Now there were seven brothers, and the first one took a wife and died childless,

  8. and the second and the third married her,

  9. and in the same way all seven died, leaving no children.

  10. Finally, the woman died also.

  11. In the resurrection, therefore, which one's wife will she be?

  12. For all seven had married her.

  13. Jesus said to them,

  14. The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage.

  15. With those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and the resurrection from the dead,

  16. neither marry nor are given in marriage.

  17. For they cannot die even, they cannot even die anymore because they are like angels or sons of God,

  18. being sons of the resurrection.

  19. With that, the dead are raised.

  20. Even Moses showed in the passage about the burning bush where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham,

  21. the God of Isaac,

  22. the God of Jacob.

  23. Now he is not the God of the dead, but the living.

  24. For all live to him.

  25. Some of the scribes answered and said,

  26. Teacher, you have spoken well.

  27. For they did not have courage to question him any longer about anything.

  28. Then he said to them,

  29. How is it that they say that Christ is David's son?

  30. For David himself says in the book of Psalms,

  31. The Lord said to my Lord,

  32. Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.

  33. Therefore, David calls him Lord.

  34. And how is it he is his son?

  35. And while all the people were listening,

  36. He said to the disciples,

  37. Beware of the scribes who like to walk around in long robes

  38. and love respectful greetings in the marketplaces,

  39. and chief seats in the synagogues,

  40. and places of honor at banquets,

  41. who devour widows' houses.

  42. And for appearances' sake, offer long prayers.

  43. These will receive greater condemnation.

  44. And he looked up,

  45. and he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury.

  46. And he saw a poor widow putting in two small copper coins.

  47. And he said,

  48. Truly, I say to you,

  49. This poor widow put in more than all of them,

  50. for they all put out of their surplus,

  51. put into the offering,

  52. but she, out of her poverty,

  53. put in all that she had to live on.

  54. This is God's word.

  55. We've been in a journey in the Gospel of Luke.

  56. If you've been with us for three years,

  57. you've seen us go through 20 chapters up until this point,

  58. not all at once, just a little at a time.

  59. And you would see that there are certain themes

  60. that Christ continues to teach on

  61. and talk about through the passage.

  62. One of the biggest themes that we've been talking about

  63. is the kingdom of God.

  64. It's a theme that's threaded through the whole Gospel of Luke.

  65. It's this theme that he's trying to tell us

  66. or show us as Christ teaches

  67. that there's a big difference between our kingdom

  68. that we live in now,

  69. the things that we value,

  70. the things that we grab onto,

  71. the things that we cling,

  72. the things that we deem important

  73. in God's kingdom.

  74. And today, he comes to

  75. probably the most difficult lesson

  76. for any of us to learn.

  77. It's the lesson that often and continually drags us away

  78. from God's kingdom.

  79. It's the lesson of our money.

  80. And what he basically is going to say is,

  81. if you don't want your stuff

  82. to have hold of you,

  83. if you don't want to be controlled by your finances,

  84. if you don't want to be controlled by your money,

  85. if you don't want to be controlled by your financial appetite,

  86. you need to give it away.

  87. Because the only way you can break a hold of something

  88. is by releasing it.

  89. And so what I thought we'd do

  90. is we'd try a little exercise today in giving away.

  91. What I would like for you to do is take out your wallet.

  92. Come on.

  93. Hold it up.

  94. It's not like your Bible.

  95. This is my Bible.

  96. This is my wallet.

  97. This is your wallet.

  98. You know, Christ is going to say today

  99. that so much trouble and so much difficulty

  100. comes from this object that we have right here.

  101. For some of us, it represents power.

  102. For some of us, it represents security.

  103. For some of us, it represents popularity and wealth

  104. and the ability to have freedom

  105. and to do whatever we want.

  106. And he says to us that this little object here

  107. and what it represents

  108. draws us away from the kingdom of God

  109. more than anything else.

  110. And to be broken from the power of this little object,

  111. we need to give it away.

  112. So what I want you to do

  113. is I want you just to hand the wallet

  114. to the person next to you.

  115. Go ahead, give to them.

  116. Here, I'll give mine to my wife

  117. or I'll give mine to Charles.

  118. I don't often give my wallet to my wife,

  119. but this is a step of faith, right?

  120. Now we're going to do something

  121. we've never done before.

  122. We're going to take an offering.

  123. So what I'm going to ask the offering stewards

  124. to come forward

  125. and I want you to open that wallet up deep, right?

  126. And just grab in there

  127. and just give till it hurts, right?

  128. So, no.

  129. I'm teasing.

  130. Jesus has been teaching about the kingdom of God.

  131. He's been showing us that

  132. His kingdom is very different than ours.

  133. He's come to Jerusalem.

  134. You can give the wallet back.

  135. I know some of you are weirding out

  136. and freaking out over it,

  137. so go ahead and give it back.

  138. He's come to Jerusalem.

  139. We've heard this

  140. because His whole life

  141. has been focused towards Jerusalem.

  142. And He's coming in.

  143. He's teaching the kingdom of God.

  144. He's being followed by maybe 10,000 people.

  145. Now it's the Sabbath.

  146. It's the Passover.

  147. It's the entrance into the Passover.

  148. So Jerusalem,

  149. which is usually about 25 or 30,000 people,

  150. is now 2 million people.

  151. 2 million people are crowded into a space

  152. that only 25,000 should be living in.

  153. So it's amazing.

  154. It's noisy.

  155. It's dirty.

  156. It's out of control.

  157. And Jesus comes up the Temple Mount

  158. and He walks in

  159. and He chases out the money chasers

  160. and He basically takes over the teaching

  161. within the Temple of God.

  162. And as He's doing this,

  163. He is confronted by the religious leaders of His time.

  164. They have an idea

  165. of what the kingdom of God should be like

  166. and so they're holding it

  167. and they're trying to transpose it

  168. over what the kingdom of God should be like

  169. and it's just not working.

  170. The first group that comes in

  171. is the Pharisees or the scribes.

  172. They're the conservatives.

  173. They would believe in the sovereignty of God.

  174. They would believe in God's word.

  175. They would believe in the Torah.

  176. They took the Ten Commandments

  177. and they wrote it out to 635 other commandments.

  178. I mean, they believe in tradition.

  179. They believe in teaching well.

  180. I mean, that is all about them.

  181. And as they hear Jesus teach,

  182. there is a struggle in their kingdom

  183. and that struggle is authority and control.

  184. And they start asking Jesus

  185. some authority and control questions.

  186. And Jesus has to remind them

  187. that their kingdom is not God's kingdom.

  188. And the things in God's kingdom work differently.

  189. He goes on and he teaches them

  190. about the parable of the vineyard

  191. and the question of the parable of the vineyard

  192. is ownership and stewardship

  193. and who owns what.

  194. And we're told that after this confrontation,

  195. they try to trick him with this coin.

  196. And again, he says, you know,

  197. that's your kingdom.

  198. But in God's kingdom,

  199. everything is his.

  200. Everything is his.

  201. Verse 26, they shut up.

  202. They never ask him another question again.

  203. And then we get to the passage today

  204. and now the Sadducees come in.

  205. The Sadducees have never confronted Jesus.

  206. They've never asked him a question.

  207. This is the only time in the Gospels

  208. the Sadducees come in and ask him a question.

  209. The Sadducees would be the liberals.

  210. They would be the popular people.

  211. They would be the wealthy people.

  212. They would be the founding fathers

  213. and the founding members of the city.

  214. They would be the people who were into their looks.

  215. They would be very sympathetic to Rome.

  216. They were focused on purity outwardly.

  217. The Sadducees were always fighting the Pharisees.

  218. There was this big struggle on the issue

  219. of purity and holiness.

  220. And they always won after each other.

  221. And you never knew really who won

  222. because the Sadducees had control of the temple.

  223. The Sadducees believed in free will.

  224. Do whatever you want.

  225. There was no angels.

  226. There's no devils.

  227. There's no resurrection.

  228. This life is all there is.

  229. This is all there is.

  230. So if this is all there is,

  231. you've got to make the most of this life.

  232. This is what you've got to do.

  233. Make the most of this life.

  234. It's a lot like people in Hong Kong

  235. that we run into, right?

  236. This is all there is.

  237. How can we make the most of our lives?

  238. And so the Pharisees come

  239. and they ask Jesus a question.

  240. It's in your bulletin.

  241. It's found in verses 29 through 33.

  242. It's a very interesting question.

  243. It's not really a question.

  244. It's basically a question to make Jesus look stupid

  245. because they don't even believe in the resurrection,

  246. but they're asking a question about the resurrection.

  247. Now we're told through historians

  248. that the Pharisees have been trying to answer this question

  249. for 100 years.

  250. And the Sadducees always ask them this question

  251. and they can't answer the question

  252. because it's really starting to bother them.

  253. It's one of those questions that your friends ask you, right?

  254. You're talking to them about God

  255. and they'll say something like,

  256. you know, if God is all-powerful

  257. and God is all-loving

  258. and God knows everything,

  259. then how can he do this or how can he do that?

  260. And you'll sit back and you're like,

  261. oh, it's one of those questions

  262. that's made to make you look stupid, right?

  263. They might ask you a question like,

  264. well, if God is all-powerful,

  265. can he make a Diet Coke can so big

  266. that even he can't pick up?

  267. Right?

  268. Come on, work with me here.

  269. It's one of those questions that you know

  270. that's just a foolish question.

  271. And Jesus answers it right away.

  272. And he tells them,

  273. hey, you guys,

  274. you don't understand the kingdom of God.

  275. You're thinking about your kingdom,

  276. but you're not thinking about God's kingdom

  277. and things operate very differently

  278. in God's kingdom.

  279. Then in verse 40, they shut up.

  280. I mean, they're afraid to ask him any more questions.

  281. They don't want to ask him any more questions

  282. because they look stupid

  283. when they ask Jesus questions.

  284. Jesus has one last lesson he wants to teach us.

  285. I mean, this is his last lesson on the kingdom of God.

  286. I mean, Jesus spoke about money

  287. more than anything else in his ministry.

  288. 45% of the time, he's talking about money.

  289. He's talking about hell and heaven.

  290. He's talking about those things.

  291. He's talking about money

  292. because he knows that it has a pull on our hearts.

  293. And after this, Jesus is going to go away.

  294. He's never going to come back to the temple.

  295. He's going to be on the mountain.

  296. He's going to be in the upper room.

  297. He's going to be preparing his disciples for his death.

  298. But he has one more lesson he wants to teach us.

  299. And so he's sitting off to the side in the treasury.

  300. And we're told that the treasury

  301. was this amazing place in the temple.

  302. It was this huge, like, you know,

  303. the biggest place in the convention center

  304. is bigger than that.

  305. It's like the meat locker, the big hangar,

  306. the airplane hangar.

  307. It's just massive airplane hangar.

  308. And as you walked into the temple,

  309. there would be 13 bronze containers.

  310. They were like a trumpet, a shofar,

  311. but it was the big part on the bottom

  312. and it would move up to the top.

  313. And people would come in

  314. and they'd give their offerings.

  315. Now, it was very interesting

  316. because some of them said

  317. for offering for doves,

  318. offering for wood,

  319. offering for frankincense,

  320. offering for clothing,

  321. offering for sin offering,

  322. old offering for sin offering,

  323. new offering for sin offering,

  324. and then there were six free-willed offerings.

  325. And so before the sermon started,

  326. or before the time started in the temple,

  327. the people came in

  328. and the historians tell us it was amazing.

  329. I mean, wealth and power

  330. and kings coming in

  331. and people are carrying these big bags of gold

  332. and they're walking in there

  333. and they're dragging it

  334. and they're dripping it off

  335. and they have all this money in their hand, right?

  336. And they have this money

  337. and it's kind of drippling

  338. and they're walking

  339. so they're drawing attention to themselves

  340. and people are looking at them.

  341. And they come up

  342. and some people say

  343. that actually the priest would be there

  344. and they would count the money.

  345. And then they would say,

  346. Tobin Miller gave $5,000 a day.

  347. And people go, ooh.

  348. Daniel gave $1,000 a day.

  349. Ooh.

  350. Howard, he gives $10 in his chariot keys.

  351. Ooh.

  352. Ooh.

  353. And we're told that people made a spectacle of themselves.

  354. They would pull in

  355. and sometimes they would go,

  356. see if anybody was listening.

  357. Sometimes they would do this

  358. and no one was listening.

  359. They'd go,

  360. and people would wake up.

  361. And so Jesus is watching

  362. people give their offering to God.

  363. And he realizes there's a collision happening

  364. in their kingdoms.

  365. But their kingdoms are very different.

  366. And you see in the text,

  367. you read it there,

  368. what he says.

  369. There's three things

  370. that I want to challenge us with

  371. to think about

  372. as we look at these last four verses.

  373. There's three things

  374. I think that Jesus wants

  375. to tell us about

  376. what does it look like

  377. to give in the kingdom of God.

  378. And the first thing he says

  379. is in God's kingdom,

  380. in the inverted kingdom,

  381. God sees everything.

  382. Did you know that?

  383. Verses one and two tell it.

  384. And he looked up and he saw,

  385. the word saw is a very special word.

  386. It means he understood.

  387. He looked in their soul.

  388. He understood what was going on in their life.

  389. And he saw what was going on in their life.

  390. And the rich came in

  391. and they're putting,

  392. and the word is throw,

  393. let fall,

  394. let tumble.

  395. They're throwing all their gifts in there.

  396. And as they're doing it,

  397. Jesus sees

  398. what's going on in their life

  399. and what's going on in their heart.

  400. And then this widow comes up.

  401. Can you imagine what she felt like?

  402. Following guys with bags of money.

  403. And this little widow comes up

  404. and she takes the two smallest coins.

  405. They're called lepta.

  406. It's probably the only Jewish coin

  407. talked about in the Bible.

  408. It actually,

  409. the word means peeling or shaving

  410. or it means feathery.

  411. It means nothing.

  412. And you can imagine her

  413. walking into this temple complex

  414. and what did the priest do?

  415. Did they look at her offering

  416. and yell it out?

  417. Or did they just look at her

  418. and go,

  419. get out of here.

  420. Go, get out of here.

  421. And she comes in there

  422. and she has these two little coins.

  423. You can't even hear it.

  424. But the passage says

  425. that Jesus hears

  426. and he sees everything.

  427. I think sometimes we forget that,

  428. don't we?

  429. I mean, sometimes we live life

  430. and we give and we do

  431. with our resources and our things

  432. and sometimes we make choices

  433. and we don't ever think about

  434. Christ looking at us

  435. and looking at our hearts

  436. and what's going on in our hearts.

  437. But in the kingdom of God,

  438. in the inverted kingdom,

  439. he sees everything.

  440. The kingdom of the Pharisees

  441. was all about appearance

  442. and how well you look

  443. and what you did.

  444. And you know,

  445. the Sadducees could care less

  446. because the Sadducees,

  447. all that was important

  448. was here and now

  449. because when they died,

  450. there's nothing.

  451. So the fear of God

  452. or what God did for them

  453. didn't mean anything.

  454. All that mattered

  455. was here and now.

  456. But the passage says here

  457. that in God's kingdom,

  458. he sees everything

  459. and how we give

  460. in our heart

  461. is very, very important

  462. because it shows us

  463. and it shows God

  464. what kingdom we are actually

  465. a part of.

  466. It's called stewardship.

  467. Jesus preached about it

  468. over and over and over

  469. in Luke.

  470. If you're faithful with this,

  471. I give you more.

  472. If you're not faithful with this,

  473. I take these things away.

  474. Jesus, God,

  475. sees everything in his kingdom

  476. and what we do with it

  477. is very important.

  478. The second thing

  479. that sticks out to me

  480. in this passage

  481. of how our kingdoms

  482. collide in money

  483. is just basically

  484. in the inverted kingdom,

  485. accounting is done

  486. very differently,

  487. isn't it?

  488. I mean,

  489. you look at this passage

  490. and you realize

  491. that God is an accountant

  492. in a very strange way.

  493. I mean,

  494. you and I,

  495. we judge people

  496. and we judge ourself

  497. by how much we give.

  498. Well,

  499. how much we give?

  500. If a wealthy person

  501. comes in

  502. and they give a million dollars,

  503. we go,

  504. whoa,

  505. they gave a lot.

  506. But when someone comes in

  507. and they bring two lepta,

  508. you don't even notice them.

  509. They didn't give anything.

  510. I mean,

  511. we look at names

  512. on buildings

  513. and things raised up

  514. as monuments

  515. to ourself.

  516. But in God's kingdom,

  517. what we give

  518. isn't so important

  519. as what is left over.

  520. Do you realize

  521. that's what he's saying?

  522. But God's saying

  523. it's not so important

  524. what you're giving,

  525. but the heart behind it,

  526. and he's asking the question,

  527. what's left?

  528. What's left over?

  529. And why did you leave it over?

  530. Did you leave it over

  531. because you didn't think

  532. God was good?

  533. Did you leave it over

  534. because you didn't think

  535. God was going to take care of you?

  536. The passage is saying

  537. that in the inverted kingdom,

  538. giving is about

  539. what is left

  540. and why.

  541. So what Jesus is saying here

  542. in his passage

  543. is that giving

  544. isn't actually about giving,

  545. but giving is about our heart.

  546. And how we feel.

  547. Now we live in a kingdom today

  548. that could care less

  549. about how we feel, right?

  550. I mean, I've thought

  551. about this before.

  552. What would happen

  553. if you went to the IRS

  554. or the IRD

  555. and you said,

  556. you know what,

  557. I was going to give taxes

  558. this year,

  559. but I just didn't really

  560. feel like it.

  561. It was just so inconvenient.

  562. Maybe next year.

  563. Or you know,

  564. I was going to give taxes

  565. this year,

  566. but I really wanted

  567. that car.

  568. And so I bought

  569. the car instead.

  570. Or maybe next year

  571. if I get more money

  572. and more bonus,

  573. then I'll give taxes.

  574. And the Pharisees

  575. and the Sadducees

  576. were going,

  577. oh, right on.

  578. Because it was outward appearance

  579. and what was important.

  580. But the passage says

  581. that she gave out of love.

  582. It was an act of worship.

  583. So the question

  584. I have to ask myself

  585. is how do I give?

  586. I mean,

  587. when I give my money,

  588. what am I thinking?

  589. Am I thinking that God's

  590. going to supply all my needs?

  591. Or do I think

  592. if I have just enough left over,

  593. I can do these things

  594. and do these things

  595. and that's okay.

  596. But in God's kingdom,

  597. sacrifice

  598. is what is praised.

  599. I mean,

  600. if you're like me,

  601. sacrifice means,

  602. well,

  603. I'm not going to eat

  604. at Ruth Chris

  605. this weekend,

  606. but I'm going to eat

  607. at another steakhouse.

  608. But in God's kingdom,

  609. sacrifice means

  610. not eating steak

  611. that week.

  612. And I realize

  613. if we're honest,

  614. if I'm honest,

  615. we don't really

  616. sacrifice

  617. very much.

  618. Do we?

  619. Jesus says here

  620. that in the kingdom of God,

  621. in the inverted kingdom,

  622. it's not what we give

  623. that is important,

  624. but it's the heart behind it

  625. and what is left over.

  626. And finally,

  627. what we see here

  628. is in God's kingdom,

  629. in the inverted kingdom,

  630. that even the smallest

  631. amount given,

  632. if it's given in love,

  633. in faith,

  634. can do amazing things.

  635. I mean,

  636. he says here

  637. in verses three and four,

  638. look at this lady,

  639. she's given more

  640. than everybody else.

  641. And if you think about that,

  642. you know,

  643. she's given these

  644. two little coins,

  645. they're nothing.

  646. But in God's world,

  647. he can use these two coins

  648. to change

  649. everything.

  650. Do we believe that?

  651. In 1966,

  652. you've heard him speak

  653. two weeks ago

  654. and I've seen it happen

  655. over and over in my life.

  656. John Bechtel,

  657. when we had our anniversary,

  658. John came up

  659. and his dad was here

  660. after the occupation

  661. of World War II

  662. and he started all the churches

  663. that basically birthed our church

  664. and John Bechtel

  665. told us a story

  666. about 1966.

  667. He and Donna come

  668. and their goal is

  669. to reach children

  670. of Hong Kong.

  671. And he said

  672. at that time

  673. there were four million people

  674. living in Hong Kong.

  675. Two million of them

  676. were 18 years or younger.

  677. And they prayed

  678. about how can we reach the kids?

  679. What are we going to do?

  680. What's going to happen here?

  681. How can we reach these kids?

  682. And they got this idea

  683. we're going to start a camp.

  684. And so they were looking around

  685. for almost a year

  686. and they found this piece

  687. of property in Fanling

  688. that was about four acres.

  689. But the bad thing was

  690. the government had just built

  691. this one million dollar

  692. building on it.

  693. But it wasn't being used.

  694. And so John goes

  695. to the government

  696. and says hey

  697. we need this.

  698. We want to reach.

  699. We want to minister

  700. to the youth

  701. and children of Hong Kong.

  702. Can you give it to us?

  703. And the guy's thinking about

  704. okay I'll tell you what

  705. this is 1966.

  706. We can sell it to you

  707. for $240,000.

  708. Now John was making

  709. like $50 a month.

  710. And he's like

  711. that's crazy money.

  712. I can't.

  713. There's no way I could do that.

  714. That's impossible.

  715. He goes well

  716. we'll sell it to you

  717. for $240,000.

  718. And as John was in the office

  719. there was a guy

  720. who was in charge

  721. of fundraising

  722. for his denomination.

  723. And he heard it

  724. and he said

  725. John that's no problem

  726. I can do it.

  727. And so that guy

  728. went back to America

  729. and for four months

  730. he stumped churches

  731. and talked to people

  732. and asked for money

  733. and asked for funding

  734. and at the end of four months

  735. John gets his letter.

  736. and it starts off

  737. dear John

  738. it's really bad

  739. when you start off

  740. you know even

  741. I'm sorry

  742. but we've tried

  743. for four months

  744. and we've had

  745. no response.

  746. No one's given anything.

  747. Please find the letter

  748. that came in

  749. from little Belinda Holmes.

  750. And in the package

  751. there's a little letter

  752. from Belinda Holmes.

  753. She's 14 years old.

  754. She'd heard the guy

  755. speak at the church

  756. and she wrote this letter

  757. out to John

  758. and she said

  759. dear John

  760. I want to be a part

  761. of reaching kids

  762. in Hong Kong

  763. I want to use my money

  764. I've stopped eating

  765. ice cream

  766. for two weeks.

  767. Here's my one dollar.

  768. So John's looking there

  769. and he owes

  770. $240,000

  771. he has one dollar.

  772. He goes

  773. this is crazy

  774. nothing's ever

  775. going to happen to this.

  776. So he goes

  777. well this is what

  778. God gave me

  779. so I'm going to use it.

  780. Because God can take

  781. a small thing

  782. given in faith

  783. and he can use it

  784. in amazing ways

  785. and he goes to the office

  786. and he talks to the guy

  787. he goes

  788. you have your $240,000

  789. he goes

  790. I don't really have

  791. $240,000

  792. but I have this.

  793. The guy reads

  794. the letter

  795. from a 14 year old

  796. who gave up

  797. her ice cream

  798. for two weeks

  799. looks at the one dollar

  800. he kind of laughs

  801. and he goes

  802. okay

  803. I'll sell it to you

  804. for one dollar.

  805. And since that time

  806. 1.3 million

  807. children

  808. in Hong Kong

  809. have gone

  810. through that camp.

  811. 1.3 million

  812. and over

  813. 120,000 of them

  814. have said

  815. that they have

  816. come to the Lord

  817. because of that.

  818. In God's kingdom

  819. small amounts

  820. given in faith

  821. can do amazing things.

  822. Now I have a lot

  823. of other questions

  824. to ask Jesus

  825. when I get to heaven

  826. when I see this.

  827. You know like

  828. well why didn't you

  829. just go up behind

  830. and take the money

  831. and give it back to her

  832. and go here daughter

  833. you need this more

  834. than I do.

  835. But he didn't.

  836. He allowed her

  837. to give out of the joy.

  838. I mean why didn't

  839. he let her give

  840. because he knew

  841. that the temple

  842. was corrupt.

  843. You're being a bad steward.

  844. But he didn't.

  845. He allowed her

  846. to give out of joy

  847. because he knew

  848. that in God's kingdom

  849. in God's inverted kingdom

  850. small things

  851. can do

  852. amazing things.

  853. Listen to what I'm saying.

  854. I'm not saying

  855. that God wants your money.

  856. God does not need

  857. your money.

  858. God wants you.

  859. God wants you.

  860. He wants a relationship

  861. with you.

  862. And he knows

  863. that money

  864. has such a strong

  865. pull on us

  866. that until we give

  867. that up

  868. we're going to have

  869. a hard time

  870. living in his kingdom.

  871. So the question is

  872. what does our giving

  873. say about us?

  874. If Jesus were watching us

  875. as we came

  876. to put our money

  877. in the offering box

  878. what would he see

  879. in our heart?

  880. What would he think

  881. about us?

  882. I've often thought

  883. that Jesus is watching

  884. this lady

  885. this poor widow

  886. come and give her

  887. everything

  888. and I wonder

  889. if Jesus is thinking

  890. in his mind

  891. in three days

  892. I'm going to the cross

  893. and I'm going to give

  894. everything for her.

  895. I'm going to give

  896. everything for Tobin.

  897. I'm so thankful

  898. he didn't look at us

  899. and say

  900. well I don't know

  901. he's a jerk

  902. and he doesn't

  903. fall very well

  904. and he doesn't do

  905. these things

  906. and sometimes

  907. he breaks his promises

  908. he just gives

  909. everything

  910. for us.

  911. This passage

  912. is telling us

  913. that if we have

  914. a generous

  915. savior

  916. that we as his

  917. followers

  918. should be generous

  919. also.

  920. On December 8th

  921. we're going to do

  922. something

  923. we've never done

  924. we're going to

  925. take an offering

  926. December 8th

  927. the church

  928. and the staff

  929. and the leaders

  930. have identified

  931. three or four

  932. ministries

  933. that we think

  934. are doing amazing

  935. amazing things.

  936. so on December 8th

  937. and I don't know

  938. who gives what

  939. in here

  940. I know that the elders

  941. we talk about

  942. what we give

  943. because we want

  944. to be faithful

  945. and we want

  946. to be true

  947. as we present

  948. these things

  949. and so you can

  950. ask them

  951. how much they give

  952. and they'll probably

  953. ask you how much

  954. you give

  955. so that's a fair

  956. exchange

  957. but I don't know

  958. who gives what

  959. but I do know

  960. that it takes

  961. about 200,000

  962. Hong Kong dollars

  963. a week

  964. to keep everything

  965. going in the church

  966. and people's salaries

  967. and outreaches

  968. that we're doing

  969. and training pastors

  970. and all these things

  971. but on December 8th

  972. everything

  973. 100% of everything

  974. that comes in

  975. for that week

  976. we're going to give

  977. to those

  978. ministries.

  979. my prayer

  980. is for all of us

  981. as a church

  982. as we reflect

  983. on this passage

  984. and we understand

  985. what God

  986. has done for us

  987. if we understand

  988. how generous

  989. he is for us

  990. that we

  991. as his people

  992. would be generous

  993. towards those

  994. around us

  995. so that God

  996. could use it

  997. for his kingdom.

  998. In God's kingdom

  999. money is seen

  1000. very differently

  1001. than ours

  1002. he watches

  1003. everything we do

  1004. with it

  1005. we're not really

1006. judged by what we give

  1007. but we're judged

  1008. by what we keep

1009. and why we've kept it

  1010. and he always uses

  1011. little things

  1012. given in faith

  1013. to change lives.

  1014. Father we just

  1015. come to you today

  1016. and we thank you

  1017. for your goodness

  1018. and your grace

  1019. in our life.

1020. We come as your people

1021. and we look at this

  1022. passage of this widow

  1023. and we wonder

  1024. how many times

  1025. throughout the last

  1026. 2,000 years

  1027. you have multiplied

  1028. those two leptas

  1029. those two slivers

  1030. how many times

  1031. you have multiplied

  1032. them for your kingdom

  1033. and done amazing things.

  1034. Lord help us

  1035. to realize

  1036. that you have been

  1037. so generous

  1038. and gracious

  1039. to us

  1040. for everything

1041. and then all we have

  1042. is yours.

  1043. The Pharisees

  1044. didn't understand that

  1045. because they were

  1046. legalists.

  1047. the Sadducees

  1048. didn't understand that

  1049. because they just

  1050. couldn't care less

  1051. and they wanted

  1052. to party

  1053. and sometimes

  1054. we bounce back

  1055. and forth

  1056. between both

  1057. of those extremes.

  1058. Lord I pray

1059. that we would see you

  1060. as you really are

  1061. but I confess

  1062. in my life

  1063. I confess

  1064. you have been

  1065. so abundant

  1066. and many times

  1067. I have squandered

  1068. those things.

  1069. I want to repent

  1070. of that.

  1071. Lord I pray

  1072. for our church

  1073. I pray that you

  1074. would forgive us

  1075. as individuals

  1076. and as groups

  1077. and how often

  1078. we've wasted

  1079. your resources

  1080. when you were waiting

  1081. to do amazing things

  1082. amazing things

  1083. if we were willing

1084. to step out in faith

  1085. and trust you.

  1086. so we come

  1087. before you now

  1088. and we just pray

  1089. that you would

  1090. change our hearts

  1091. help us to see

  1092. your son

  1093. as he truly is

  1094. help us to understand

  1095. the depth

  1096. and the breadth

  1097. and the width

  1098. of the grace

  1099. and mercy

  1100. you've given to us

  1101. and help us

  1102. to be people

  1103. who are generous

  1104. because we serve

  1105. an amazingly

  1106. generous God.

  1107. We love you

  1108. and we pray

  1109. these things

  1110. in your son

  1111. Jesus name

  1112. Amen.
