  1. Many of you, or at least some of you have heard the story now of a party that I went to when I was in my fourth year of university.

  2. And I went to a party, and at the time I was in love with Louise, and she wasn't in love with me.

  3. And I went to this party, and Louise was at the party, but I didn't go to the party with Louise or come home from the party with Louise.

  4. I went with Tom, and he's a great guy, but he wasn't Louise.

  5. And after the party, as I was going home with Tom, we were walking, we sort of lived near each other, and we walked good ways together.

  6. I said to Tom, Tom, I really like Louise, but I think she's too good looking to go out with a guy like me.

  7. And Tom said, George, you're right.

  8. She's way too good looking to go out with a guy like you.

  9. Every time I think about that story, I think, isn't it amazing that he went into counseling?

  10. And I think he's probably good at it now.

  11. And, you know, many of us can look at couples, and you say to yourself, like, how on earth do those two get together?

  12. Like, what keeps them together?

  13. What is that magic or whatever that keeps them together?

  14. They just seem to be so different.

  15. You know, if we were to keep a little list of everybody who came to St. Albans today, and then tomorrow we were to interview them all,

  16. I mean, you know, there are people in this church, and I know this, there are people in this church who think the NDP aren't probably left-wing enough.

  17. And I know that there's people in this church who think the conservatives are wusses and should be far more conservative.

  18. And, you know, if you were to line us all up, and all of a sudden you'd see that, you know, we differ in politics, we differ in marital status, we differ on children, a number of children, we differ in sexual orientation, we differ in education, we differ in race and culture, in sickness and health.

  19. And so, you know, I mean, if you're not going to be a person, we differ in life, we differ in life.

  20. And I think, you know, how on earth do those guys ever stay in the same room?

  21. Like, what on earth actually keeps them together?

  22. It just doesn't seem to make any sense.

  23. Just like for some couples.

  24. I think they'd say this about St. Albans, that they actually talked to us beyond these things.

  25. And the answer is, and hopefully, you know, there's lots of bad things that keep different people together,

  26. but for Christians, there's something really good which keeps us together.

  27. And it's the second of the four marks of the church.

  28. Those of you maybe who are here this week for the first time, we've been looking for basically for four weeks,

  29. we've looked time and time again at this text which my son Tosh read,

  30. like sort of going right back to that early snapshot of what the church is like and what it's to be like.

  31. And in verse 42, we see the four marks of a church which is formed by the gospel

  32. and upon which the Holy Spirit has fallen, in other words, a true church.

  33. And the four marks are that they are devoted to the apostles' teaching.

  34. And we understand that now to mean, of course, New Testament teaching and biblical teaching

  35. as understood through the New Testament with Christ as Savior and Lord,

  36. gospel-hearted, New Testament teaching, devoted to the apostles' teaching,

  37. devoted to koinonia, or fellowship it's translated, I think, here in our Bible,

  38. devoted to the Lord's Supper, which is more than just a ritual,

  39. but also involves the deep remembering of Jesus' death and resurrection upon the cross,

  40. and fourthly to the prayers.

  41. And today, we're going to look at the second mark of the church

  42. because it's in fact koinonia in a good church which keeps such different people together.

  43. Koinonia is a spiritual reality which generates a common life.

  44. Koinonia is a spiritual reality which generates a common life.

  45. Devotion to koinonia is a devotion to a common message, a common mission, a common life,

  46. common boundaries, all flowing from a living communion with the living God,

  47. the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  48. Right?

  49. It is a spiritual reality which generates a common life.

  50. Koinonia is a devotion to a common message, a common mission, a common life,

  51. common boundaries, all flowing from a living communion with the living God,

  52. the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

  53. Today, my sermon is going to be a little bit different from my usual sermons.

  54. I'm not going to exposit one text, but I'm going to look at several texts

  55. which help us to understand this mark of the church, which is koinonia.

  56. And koinonia is really important.

  57. You know, without koinonia, New Testament study can just become arrogant, proof-texting.

  58. Liturgy can become just something that we have huge wars over.

  59. The Lord's Supper can be merely a boundary which marks our group versus your group.

  60. We won't allow your group to have the Lord's Supper with our group.

  61. And all of these things can become quickly and utterly deformed without this lifeblood of koinonia,

  62. which is a spiritual reality which generates a desire and a drive and a forming of a common life.

  63. And so let's open your Bibles and turn first to 1 John 1, verse 3.

    1 John 1:3

  64. Very tiny little book towards the back of your Bible.

  65. And if you're using the Pew Bibles, it's on page 1054.

  66. Page 1054.

  67. And John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  68. And it's verse 3, which is what I want to really focus.

  69. But I'm going to give you the couple of verses before and after so you have a little bit of the context.

  70. Page 1054, 1 John chapter 1.

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  71. But by the way, if, you know, many other Sundays we say an ancient creed.

  72. Today we sang a wonderful short creed.

  73. But in the creed, we say we believe in the communion of saints, the koinonia of saints.

  74. And in fact, the word koinonia is one of the most common New Testament words.

  75. Sometimes it's translated as communion.

  76. Sometimes it's fellowship.

  77. Sometimes as partake.

  78. Sometimes it's participation.

  79. Sometimes it's sharing.

  80. And there's, what was the sixth word?

  81. The sixth word will come to me later on.

  82. Oh, partnership is the sixth word.

  83. And so we can miss the fact that it's the same word time and time again.

  84. But listen to 1 John.

  85. That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,

  86. which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, concerning the word of life.

  87. Just pause there for a moment.

  88. He's talking about Jesus, who has been from all eternity the second person of the Trinity.

  89. And counter to the thought of the day, which thinks that God is distant, distant, distant, distant, distant,

  90. and could never, ever, ever, ever come and walk amongst us.

  91. John has just said in very, very powerful ways.

  92. That which was from the beginning, the second person of the Trinity, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes,

  93. which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, concerning the word of life.

  94. The life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and declare to you that eternal life,

  95. which was with the Father and was manifested to us.

  96. That which we have seen and heard, we declare to you that you also may have koinonia with us.

  97. And truly, our koinonia is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  98. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

  99. You see, koinonia flows first from responding to the apostles' message that God has sent his Son, Jesus,

  100. to be the Savior of the world.

  101. And the really spectacular news is that he came to be your Savior and he came to be mine.

  102. And so koinonia begins when we hear the message of the apostles, the message of the Bible,

  103. that there is a Savior who loves you, who has died upon the cross for you,

  104. has risen from the dead and conquered sin and death and hell and hostile spiritual powers.

  105. And he is conquered, not as a lonely victor, but he is conquered so that you can share in his triumph.

  106. And we hear this message and we respond to love in love and trust and obedience.

  107. And what happens is that we have koinonia with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  108. That means mere mortals, pillars of dust formed by a soul,

  109. people who struggle with mortgages and with temptation and sickness and death.

  110. You have said yes to Jesus and you got more than just Jesus loving you.

  111. You now actually participate in and taste and live in the very life of God.

  112. Isn't that the most amazing thing in the world?

  113. Pillars of dust formed by a soul,

  114. people with bad knees and bad credit ratings and all of those things,

  115. that through Jesus you actually are brought into the very, very life of God

  116. and can begin to taste that and know that.

  117. And you are invited to have that become more and more a part of your life.

  118. It is a living reality.

  119. And the word here is that you and I are in koinonia,

  120. a communion, a participation, a sharing,

  121. a dwelling in the very life of the Father and his Son, Jesus Christ.

  122. And through responding to the gospel message,

  123. the message of the apostles,

  124. and saying yes to this message,

  125. and all of a sudden discovering or beginning to discover

  126. that God, in fact, has granted you vastly more

  127. than you had ever begun to understand

  128. when you first heard an inkling of the person of Jesus Christ.

  129. And at the same time,

  130. it is because we have responded to the gospel,

  131. have entered into the very life of God,

  132. that we also have koinonia with one another.

  133. Listen to the verse of Scripture,

  134. that that which we have seen and heard,

  135. verse 3,

  136. we declare to you,

  137. why?

  138. That you also may have koinonia with us.

  139. And truly, our koinonia is with the Father

  140. and with his Son, Jesus Christ.

  141. Koinonia is a spiritual reality

  142. which generates a common life.

  143. It is a devotion to a common message,

  144. a common mission,

  145. a common life,

  146. common boundaries,

  147. all flowing from a living communion

  148. with the living God,

  149. the Father,

  150. the Son,

  151. and the Holy Spirit.

  152. Spirit.

  153. Isn't that the most amazing

  154. and wonderful thing in the world?

  155. Let's look at the second text.

  156. It's Philippians chapter 1,

    Philippians 1:5

  157. verses 5 and 7,

  158. but once again,

  159. we'll read around it

  160. to give you a little bit of the context.

  161. And for those of you using the pew Bibles

  162. in the church,

  163. it's page 1016.

  164. Page 1016.

  165. And it's verses 5 and 7,

  166. both have this word fellowship

  167. or koinonia.

  168. And here's what,

  169. I'll begin reading at verse 3

  170. just to give you the context.

  171. I thank my God

  172. upon every remembrance of you,

  173. always in every prayer of mine,

  174. making request for you all with joy,

  175. for your koinonia in the gospel

  176. from the first day until now,

  177. being confident of this very thing,

  178. that he who has begun

  179. a good work in you

  180. will complete it until the day

  181. of Jesus Christ.

  182. Just as it is right for me

  183. to think this of you all,

  184. because I have you in my heart,

  185. inasmuch as both in my chains

  186. and in the defense

  187. and confirmation of the gospel,

  188. you are all koinonia

  189. with me of grace.

  190. For God is my witness,

  191. how greatly I long for you all

  192. with the affection of Jesus Christ,

  193. and this I pray,

  194. that your love may abound

  195. still more and more

  196. in knowledge and all discernment,

  197. that you may approve

  198. the things that are excellent,

  199. that you may be sincere

  200. and without offense

  201. till the day of Christ,

  202. being filled with the fruits

  203. of righteousness

  204. which are by Jesus Christ

  205. to the glory and praise of God.

  206. Amen.

  207. Hallelujah.

  208. Listen to this again.

  209. You see, it's a spiritual reality.

  210. It's a real communion

  211. with the living God,

  212. but it is more than that.

  213. This living communion

  214. with the living God

  215. generates a desire

  216. for a common mission

  217. and common message

  218. and a common life

  219. and a common work

  220. which is being involved.

  221. It's in a sense this desire

  222. not only to know Jesus.

  223. If you go in and read Philippians,

  224. he wants to know Christ

  225. and he wants to share

  226. in his sufferings

  227. and he urges them

  228. to participate

  229. in his mission

  230. and in his ministry

  231. and it's this sense

  232. that God is at work

  233. in the world,

  234. Jesus is building his church

  235. and when we are

  236. in communion with God,

  237. we have this desire

  238. to be part of that action,

  239. to be part of Jesus

  240. building his church,

  241. God being at work

  242. in the world

  243. through the proclamation

  244. of the gospel

  245. and people entering

  246. into God's family

  247. through adoption,

  248. by grace alone,

  249. through faith alone,

  250. in Christ alone.

  251. Verse 5,

  252. for your fellowship,

  253. your koinonia in the gospel

  254. from the first day until now.

  255. You see,

  256. they have a koinonia

  257. in the gospel message,

  258. in the proclamation

  259. of the gospel.

  260. Verse 7,

  261. I have you in my heart

  262. inasmuch as both

  263. in my chains

  264. and in the defense

  265. and confirmation

  266. of the gospel.

  267. You are all,

  268. you all are koinonia

  269. with me of grace.

  270. You see,

  271. this spiritual reality

  272. of communion

  273. with the living God

  274. generates within us

  275. this desire

  276. to be involved

  277. in mission,

  278. common mission

  279. and common proclamation

  280. of the gospel message

  281. and a common life.

  282. You know,

  283. it's what,

  284. it's what drives us

  285. to be interested

  286. in Matthew Hoskin

  287. in Cyprus

  288. or other missionaries

  289. or the work of Katrin

  290. amongst the street poor

  291. or the work of Jill

  292. amongst the university students

  293. or thinking of other ways

  294. that we can be involved

  295. in the extension

  296. of the gospel

  297. and what's going on

  298. in Nigeria

  299. and what's going on

  300. in the Arctic

  301. and it's a spiritual reality

  302. which generates within us

  303. this desire

  304. to know of

  305. and to participate in

  306. and to further

  307. this,

  308. the message,

  309. the mission

  310. and this common life.

  311. But there are boundaries.

  312. There are boundaries.

  313. Our age has this

  314. ambivalence

  315. about boundaries.

  316. But this,

  317. there's boundaries.

  318. Let's turn to a,

  319. sort of a dark passage

  320. in 1 Corinthians chapter 10

    1 Corinthians 10:16–21

  321. verses 16 to 21.

  322. There's a warning here.

  323. 1 Corinthians 10

    1 Corinthians 10:16–21

  324. verses 16 to 21.

  325. We're going to begin

  326. at verse 14.

  327. It's on page 993

  328. if you're using

  329. the Pew Bibles.

  330. This text,

  331. as you turn there

  332. to page 993,

  333. 1 Corinthians 10

    1 Corinthians 10:14

  334. verse 14 and following,

  335. you know,

  336. this text sort of

  337. opens up to us

  338. for a moment

  339. that the Bible

  340. has a different view

  341. of what it means

  342. to be human

  343. than our culture has.

  344. and it's almost

  345. as if you think

  346. of an hourglass

  347. and in some ways

  348. an hourglass

  349. is biblically speaking

  350. what a human being

  351. really is.

  352. Our culture

  353. tends to think

  354. of us as being

  355. that little tiny

  356. joining part

  357. in an hourglass.

  358. But this,

  359. the Bible

  360. constantly pushes us

  361. to sense

  362. that really,

  363. even though,

  364. I mean,

  365. it's that little

  366. tiny part

  367. in an hourglass

  368. that we see,

  369. that little center part,

  370. that's what we see

  371. walking around,

  372. but that if in a sense

  373. we were to be able

  374. to have God glasses

  375. or biblical glasses

  376. that we would see

  377. that every human being

  378. is not just in a sense

  379. the little center part

  380. in an hourglass,

  381. but that because

  382. we are

  383. enfleshed

  384. souls,

  385. souls

  386. that have

  387. a body,

  388. an embodied soul,

  389. we would see

  390. that in a sense

  391. just speaking

  392. figuratively

  393. and literally

  394. that in a sense

  395. opening out

  396. from us

  397. is that every human being

  398. is open

  399. to these realities

  400. and spiritual realities

  401. which are far,

  402. far bigger than us.

  403. that there's in a sense

  404. within every human being

  405. whether it's denied

  406. or whether it's

  407. pursued in wrong ways

  408. that in fact

  409. we open up to,

  410. there's an openness

  411. in every human being

  412. to these spiritual principles

  413. and realities

  414. which are just vastly

  415. bigger than us.

  416. You see,

  417. one of the reasons

  418. why Christians reject

  419. almost all of the ethics

  420. that you'd have described

  421. in the Citizen

  422. and the National Post

  423. and they're all basically

  424. utilitarian,

  425. some type of utilitarian

  426. measuring,

  427. you know,

  428. pleasure and pain

  429. and harm

  430. and lack of harm

  431. that's caused

  432. to other human beings

  433. physically,

  434. it completely and utterly

  435. denies,

  436. completely and utterly

  437. evades the fact

  438. that human beings

  439. are fundamentally

  440. open to spiritual realities

  441. which are vastly

  442. bigger than them

  443. and that can be

  444. pursued wrongly

  445. and can be damaged

  446. and can be

  447. just completely

  448. and utterly wrecked.

  449. And at the same time

  450. human beings

  451. are not funnels,

  452. the narrow part

  453. at the bottom

  454. just opening up

  455. to the spiritual thing

  456. but the fact of the matter

  457. is that beneath us

  458. we are completely

  459. and utterly rooted

  460. in creation.

  461. That there is in fact

  462. something within us

  463. which is akin to

  464. the rocks

  465. and the trees

  466. and the wind

  467. and that some of us

  468. as we get older

  469. we become aware

  470. of the fact

  471. that gosh,

  472. you know,

  473. that nose

  474. has been handed down

  475. from father to son

  476. to father to son

  477. for generations,

  478. you know,

  479. and the eyebrows

  480. or other types

  481. of things

  482. and that we're

  483. part of this

  484. huge genetic

  485. and physical

  486. bigness

  487. and this text

  488. sort of points

  489. to that

  490. with something.

  491. 1 Corinthians 10

    1 Corinthians 10:14

  492. verse 14

  493. Oh, just one other thing.

  494. Therefore, my beloved,

  495. flee from idolatry.

  496. There's two great messages

  497. in 1 Corinthians,

  498. two things that we are

  499. to flee from.

  500. We are to flee

  501. from porneia

  502. which is

  503. anything which departs

  504. from faithfulness

  505. and heterosexual marriage

  506. or sexual abstinence

  507. and singleness.

  508. We are to flee

  509. from anything

  510. that takes us

  511. from that

  512. and we are to flee

  513. from idolatry.

  514. It's the two great messages

  515. of fleeing

  516. in the book

  517. of 1 Corinthians

  518. and this text

  519. begins with one of those

  520. flee,

  521. flee from idolatry.

  522. I speak to you

  523. as wise men and women,

  524. judge for yourselves

  525. what I say.

  526. The cup of blessing

  527. which we bless,

  528. is it not

  529. the koinonia

  530. of the blood

  531. of Christ?

  532. The bread which we break,

  533. is it not

  534. the koinonia

  535. of the body

  536. of Christ?

  537. For we,

  538. being many,

  539. are one bread

  540. and one body,

  541. for we all,

  542. and here the word

  543. isn't koinonia,

  544. I'm going to say koinonia,

  545. but it's a synonym

  546. for koinonia,

  547. for we are all

  548. koinonia

  549. of that one bread.

  550. Observe Israel

  551. after the flesh.

  552. Are not those

  553. who eat of the sacrifices

  554. koinonia

  555. of the altar?

  556. What am I saying then?

  557. That an idol

  558. is anything

  559. or what is offered

  560. to idols

  561. is anything,

  562. but I say

  563. that the things

  564. which the Gentiles

  565. sacrifice,

  566. they sacrifice

  567. to demons

  568. and not to God,

  569. and I do not want

  570. you to have

  571. koinonia

  572. with demons.

  573. You cannot drink

  574. the cup of the Lord

  575. and the cup of demons.

  576. You cannot

  577. koinonia

  578. of the Lord's table

  579. and of the table

  580. of demons,

  581. or do we provoke

  582. the Lord to jealousy?

  583. Are we stronger

  584. than he?

  585. You see,

  586. this on one level

  587. says that this ability

  588. of koinonia,

  589. that in a sense,

  590. it's talking about

  591. something which is human.

  592. On one level,

  593. it's something human,

  594. which is that,

  595. you know,

  596. that's why I was saying

  597. about there's,

  598. in a sense,

  599. out of the top of us

  600. that there's this ability

  601. to participate in

  602. and be influenced

  603. by spiritual realities

  604. that are bigger than us.

  605. And so it is possible

  606. for us

  607. to have a communion

  608. with things

  609. that are bigger than us

  610. and that are fallen

  611. and that are in rebellion

  612. against God

  613. and are in complete

  614. and utter denial

  615. of the gospel.

  616. And Christians

  617. are ones who have responded

  618. to the gospel message.

  619. By responding

  620. to the gospel message

  621. are in a living relationship

  622. with Almighty God.

  623. There is now

  624. a spiritual reality

  625. which generates

  626. within us a common life.

  627. There is a devotion

  628. to koinonia,

  629. is a devotion

  630. to a common message,

  631. a common mission,

  632. a common life,

  633. and common boundaries

  634. all flowing

  635. from a living communion

  636. with the living God,

  637. the Father,

  638. the Son,

  639. and the Holy Spirit.

  640. There are things

  641. that we can be open to.

  642. There are things

  643. that can bring us together

  644. which are in rebellion

  645. against God

  646. and we are to have

  647. nothing to do with them.

  648. There are to be boundaries.

  649. The fact of the matter is

  650. that there are,

  651. in the history of the church,

  652. we can think of

  653. countless things

  654. that have brought

  655. Christians together.

  656. They have been brought

  657. together by racism,

  658. by prejudice,

  659. by hatred,

  660. by social class,

  661. by elitism.

  662. They have been brought

  663. together by a despising

  664. of the poor

  665. or a despising

  666. of the rich,

  667. by mere tastes

  668. in music

  669. or mere tastes

  670. in liturgy,

  671. by race,

  672. by ethnicity,

  673. by war,

  674. and by...

  675. There have been

  676. many things

  677. that have brought

  678. Christians together.

  679. Many things

  680. that have brought

  681. Christians together

  682. and we are not

  683. to be brought together

  684. by these things.

  685. We are to forsake

  686. these things

  687. and forswear

  688. these things

  689. that, in fact,

  690. the wonder of the gospel

  691. is that God invites us

  692. regardless of our race,

  693. our poverty,

  694. our wealth,

  695. our education,

  696. our gender,

  697. our sexual orientation,

  698. that Jesus comes

  699. to every human being

  700. and invites us

  701. to come to him

  702. and he receives us

  703. as his own

  704. and that when he receives

  705. us as his own,

  706. we enter into this

  707. living communion

  708. and fellowship

  709. with Almighty God

  710. and once that happens

  711. there is a spiritual reality

  712. which is to take place

  713. in us,

  714. which is to generate

  715. a common life

  716. and that common life

  717. is to be marked

  718. by all of a sudden

  719. the relativizing of race,

  720. the relativizing of class,

  721. the relativizing of education,

  722. the relativizing of gender,

  723. the relativizing of all

  724. of these things

  725. that there is,

  726. in a sense,

  727. a push past

  728. these boundaries

  729. that are not to be things

  730. which unite us.

  731. We are to be united

  732. by the message of the gospel,

  733. by entrance into a common life

  734. with God

  735. and so there are to be boundaries.

  736. We are to forswear

  737. or forsake

  738. any type of communion

  739. that opens us up

  740. to that which is not God,

  741. to that which is

  742. in rebellion against God,

  743. to that which is

  744. antithetical to God

  745. or a denial to God

  746. or to the message

  747. of the gospel,

  748. the mission

  749. of Jesus Christ

  750. in the world.

  751. We are to forswear that.

  752. One text,

  753. very briefly,

  754. before we leave this,

  755. it's in 1 John again,

  756. it's just after the part

  757. that we read

  758. at the very beginning,

  759. it's the other classic text

  760. on this.

  761. 1 John,

    1 John 1 chapter mention

  762. chapter 1,

  763. and it's sort of the rest

  764. of that first chapter.

  765. If you're using your pew Bibles,

  766. it's on page 1054.

  767. 1054.

  768. And here we're looking

  769. at 1 John,

  770. that's verse 6 and 7,

  771. but we'll begin reading

  772. at verse 5.

  773. Page 1054,

  774. 1 John,

    1 John 1:5–10

  775. chapter 1,

  776. verses 5 through 10.

  777. This is the message

  778. which we have heard

  779. from him

  780. and declare to you

  781. that God is light

  782. and in him

  783. is no darkness at all.

  784. If we say

  785. that we have

  786. koinonia

  787. with Jesus

  788. and walk in darkness,

  789. we lie

  790. and do not practice

  791. the truth.

  792. But if we walk

  793. in the light

  794. as he is in the light,

  795. we have koinonia

  796. with one another

  797. and the blood

  798. of Jesus Christ,

  799. his son,

  800. cleanses us

  801. from all sin.

  802. If we say

  803. that we have no sin,

  804. we deceive ourselves

  805. and the truth

  806. is not in us.

  807. If we confess

  808. our sins,

  809. he is faithful

  810. and just

  811. to forgive us

  812. our sins

  813. and to cleanse us

  814. from all unrighteousness.

  815. If we say

  816. that we have not sinned,

  817. we make him a liar

  818. and his word

  819. and his word

  820. is not in us.

  821. Here we see

  822. once again

  823. that we are not

  824. to have koinonia

  825. with darkness

  826. but only with light.

  827. We are not

  828. to have koinonia

  829. which proclaims

  830. a false gospel

  831. or an antithetical gospel.

  832. We are not

  833. to be united

  834. by class

  835. or by institution

  836. that koinonia

  837. is responding.

  838. It develops

  839. from responding

  840. to the gospel message.

  841. It creates

  842. a spiritual reality

  843. which generates

  844. a common life

  845. and there is

  846. a devotion

  847. to a common message,

  848. a common mission,

  849. a common life,

  850. common boundaries

  851. all flowing

  852. from a living communion

  853. with the living God,

  854. the Father,

  855. the Son

  856. and the Holy Spirit.

  857. You know,

  858. one of the things

  859. which we have been

  860. looking at

  861. over the last few weeks

  862. as we draw to a close

  863. is that the church

  864. is learning

  865. you know,

  866. in Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2:46

  867. verse 46

  868. the church is learning

  869. to live large

  870. and live little.

  871. Koinonia

  872. is what

  873. in a sense

  874. generates a desire

  875. for Christians

  876. to live large.

  877. It's what

  878. generates Christians

  879. to say

  880. I'm not supposed

  881. to be alone

  882. I should be part

  883. of a church.

  884. It's what generates

  885. a desire

  886. not only to be part

  887. of a little church

  888. here in the corner

  889. of King Edward and Daly

  890. but to also be

  891. in some type

  892. of common life

  893. with other Christians

  894. in the denomination

  895. and other Christians

  896. across denominational boundaries.

  897. Koinonia

  898. is that mark

  899. of the church

  900. that spiritual reality

  901. which generates

  902. this desire

  903. to live

  904. the Christian

  905. life large

  906. and to think

  907. big.

  908. And it's also

  909. that

  910. which generates

  911. within a Christian

  912. the desire

  913. of a church

  914. and the desire

  915. of a Christian

  916. to learn

  917. how to live little.

  918. It's what

  919. pushes us

  920. to say

  921. how can we

  922. make our families

  923. Christian?

  924. How can we

  925. make our marriage

  926. Christian?

  927. How can we

  928. find spiritual

  929. friendship?

  930. How can we

  931. find those

  932. little gatherings

  933. where we gather

  934. together in prayer?

  935. You know

  936. maybe it's just

  937. you and some

  938. people who all

  939. work near each other

  940. who decide

  941. you're going

  942. to get

  943. to work

  944. a few minutes

  945. early

  946. and spend

  947. half an hour

  948. in the cafeteria

  949. over a cup of tea

  950. and a cup of coffee

  951. and maybe share

  952. one Bible verse

  953. and share a couple

  954. of things in your life

  955. and then quietly

  956. try to pray

  957. or maybe it's

  958. a more formal

  959. Bible study

  960. or a more formal

  961. teaching session

  962. but it's

  963. koinonia

  964. this spiritual reality

  965. which generates

  966. a desire

  967. for a common life

  968. the desire

  969. for a common life

  970. is both living

  971. large

  972. and living little

  973. it's that part

  974. within us

  975. which says

  976. I need

  977. Christian friends

  978. I need a small

  979. group where people

  980. know my name

  981. like I have to

  982. confess to you

  983. you know

  984. it's

  985. I have to confess

  986. that you know

  987. over the last

  988. it's funny

  989. you know

  990. on one level

  991. I want to confess

  992. and apologize

  993. to you folks

  994. last time I talked

  995. to the wardens

  996. about it

  997. said you know

  998. George don't

  999. apologize for

  1000. these things

  1001. you know

  1002. part of what

  1003. God has called

  1004. you to do

  1005. right now

  1006. is to be involved

  1007. with some of

  1008. these big things

  1009. that are going

  1010. on in the

  1011. Anglican church

  1012. you know

  1013. and I just

  1014. I'm so grateful

  1015. that you folks

  1016. have blessed me

  1017. and released me

  1018. and you're patient

  1019. for me

  1020. as I spend time

  1021. in some of

  1022. these things

  1023. with the continuing

  1024. crisis

  1025. but you know

  1026. we have to

  1027. get out of the

  1028. way

  1029. so Koinonia

  1030. can work

  1031. in your desire

  1032. to find

  1033. to live

  1034. the little

  1035. Christian life

  1036. as well as

  1037. the large

  1038. Christian life

  1039. and we have

  1040. different Bible

  1041. studies and groups

  1042. open that you

  1043. guys can come

  1044. to but if you

  1045. say you know

  1046. George I don't

  1047. feel like coming

  1048. downtown

  1049. I'd like to do

  1050. something in

  1051. Manor Park

  1052. or I don't

  1053. want to come

  1054. downtown

  1055. I want to do

  1056. something in

  1057. Kanata

  1058. or George

  1059. I don't want

  1060. to do that

  1061. I want to get

  1062. something going

  1063. right in the

  1064. center of Ottawa

  1065. we're all going

  1066. to get together

  1067. a little bit

  1068. earlier at the

  1069. Starbucks

  1070. you just tell us

  1071. and you come

  1072. alongside with us

  1073. and you help us

  1074. because in fact

  1075. the mark of the

  1076. church is not

  1077. only gathering

  1078. around apostolic

  1079. teaching

  1080. it's not only

  1081. gathering around

  1082. the Lord's

  1083. Supper and

  1084. remembering Jesus'

  1085. death and

  1086. resurrection upon

  1087. his resurrection

  1088. it's not only

  1089. the prayers

  1090. it is also

  1091. koinonia

  1092. a spiritual

  1093. reality which

  1094. generates a

  1095. common life

  1096. this common

  1097. life is living

  1098. large and

  1099. living little

  1100. it is a

  1101. devotion to a

  1102. common message

  1103. a common

  1104. mission

  1105. a common

  1106. life

  1107. not that we

  1108. all live

  1109. identical

  1110. not that we

  1111. become clones

  1112. but that in

  1113. our difference

  1114. in our

  1115. idiosyncrasies

  1116. in our

  1117. uniqueness

  1118. that we

  1119. learn to

  1120. live a

  1121. life

  1122. common

  1123. and together

  1124. with bonds

  1125. of affection

  1126. and with

  1127. friendship

  1128. and with

  1129. helpfulness to

  1130. each other

  1131. and peaceableness

  1132. with common

  1133. boundaries

  1134. all flowing

  1135. from a living

  1136. communion

  1137. with the

  1138. living God

  1139. the Father

  1140. the Son

  1141. and the Holy

  1142. Spirit

  1143. let us pray

  1144. Father we

  1145. give you

  1146. thanks and

  1147. praise

  1148. that you

  1149. do not

  1150. want us

  1151. to all be

  1152. clones

  1153. and all

  1154. be uniform

  1155. and identical

  1156. you don't

  1157. care if we

  1158. all

  1159. in fact

  1160. Father we

  1161. probably

  1162. you know

  1163. given that

  1164. you've made

  1165. every snowflake

  1166. different

  1167. you would

  1168. probably be

  1169. offended if

  1170. we all

  1171. dressed

  1172. identical

  1173. or combed

  1174. our hair

  1175. the same

  1176. way

  1177. we thank

  1178. and praise

  1179. you Father

  1180. that you

  1181. are a God

  1182. who loves

  1183. difference

  1184. and loves

  1185. uniqueness

  1186. and Father

  1187. we thank

  1188. and praise

  1189. you for

  1190. that

  1191. and that

  1192. you will

  1193. keep us

  1194. in our

  1195. uniqueness

  1196. we thank

  1197. you Father

  1198. at the same

  1199. time that

  1200. the healing

  1201. authority of

  1202. your Son

  1203. Jesus

  1204. and the

  1205. healing

  1206. authority of

  1207. your Holy

  1208. Spirit

  1209. will bring

  1210. healing to

  1211. brokenness

  1212. and darkness

  1213. and sin

  1214. in our

  1215. lives

  1216. we thank

  1217. and praise

  1218. you that

  1219. you lead

  1220. us to a

  1221. common life

  1222. with others

  1223. who are

  1224. different

  1225. but who

  1226. have also

  1227. come to

  1228. your Son

  1229. Jesus

  1230. Christ

  1231. Father may

  1232. your Holy

  1233. Spirit

  1234. fall afresh

  1235. upon this
