  1. his sweat became like drops of blood

  2. falling down to the ground.

  3. And he was in agony.

  4. You know, when we started Watermark,

  5. several of us were praying,

  6. and we felt like, you know,

  7. what kind of church did we want,

  8. what kind of church did we feel like God wanted us to have

  9. in this midst of this part of Hong Kong Island?

  10. We wanted to be a church where people were known.

  11. We felt like there were a lot of clubs

  12. that people just kind of bop in and bop out,

  13. and there's actually a lot of churches

  14. where people just kind of bop in and bop out,

  15. and no one really knows anybody

  16. because we're so busy.

  17. But we wanted our church to be different.

  18. We felt like God was calling us

  19. to have his church be different.

  20. We wanted the church to be raw and authentic and real.

  21. I get in trouble sometimes when I say raw

  22. because people say,

  23. you can't, don't say raw,

  24. say organic.

  25. And so organic,

  26. and we wanted it to be organic.

  27. And one of our greatest fears

  28. was that you would look at the staff

  29. or the elders or the pastors

  30. and that you would think of them as plastic people.

  31. I don't know if you've ever thought about that,

  32. but I've thought about that.

  33. I've gone to churches where I look up

  34. and I wonder what's going on inside of that person.

  35. Are they real?

  36. Are they, could I get to know them?

  37. Is that something that they would allow?

  38. Are they just kind of plastic?

  39. You know, you grew up in churches all the time

  40. where people ask how you're doing

  41. and everybody's answer is always,

  42. oh, great, I'm doing really good.

  43. Thank you very much.

  44. And I just grew up in church

  45. where everybody was doing really good and great.

  46. And except for me,

  47. I had a hard time sometimes,

  48. but I was never always doing great.

  49. And we wanted Watermark to be different than that.

  50. We wanted you to know the staff and the people

  51. and we wanted to be a family.

  52. So I want to share some things with you about myself

  53. so you're going to get bored as you get to hear more

  54. if you've been here for a while.

  55. But one of the things you have to know

  56. is that I can't hear out of one of my ears.

  57. So I'm actually deaf in one of my ears.

  58. And sometimes people will say,

  59. well, he was really rude

  60. because I started talking to him

  61. and he just walked away and I kept talking.

  62. And if that happens,

  63. it's usually because I just didn't hear you

  64. and because you're speaking into my bad ear.

  65. Now as a husband, it's really helpful

  66. because sometimes your wife is talking to you.

  67. And most husbands use the excuse already,

  68. I can't hear you.

  69. But for me, that's really true.

  70. And so when I go to bed at night,

  71. I just lay down on my good ear

  72. and I can't hear all the talking going on.

  73. But I learned if you just go, uh-huh, uh-huh, uh-huh,

  74. then everything's okay, right?

  75. I'm kind of sentimental.

  76. I have this weirdness about me

  77. that I attach meaning and experiences

  78. to things in my life

  79. and I carry them around.

  80. And so when we got married,

  81. Christina was always trying to get rid of my sweatshirts

  82. and my shoes that had duct tape on them.

  83. And I had always found out

  84. I didn't go to the trash can in our house

  85. because she would put my trash can outside.

  86. So when I'd come home, I'd go to the trash can outside

  87. and I'd grab my favorite pair of shoes out there

  88. because they had meaning

  89. even though they looked like junk.

  90. Before we got married, I bought this watch.

  91. I love watches.

  92. But as a pastor, that's kind of a bad thing to love

  93. because you can't afford those things.

  94. But selfishly, I felt like, okay,

  95. I got three months before I got married,

  96. I have some money left over

  97. and who knows if I'll ever be able to get another watch.

  98. Who knows if my wife will ever let me buy another watch.

  99. By the way, this is not an advertisement

  100. for my wife letting me buy another watch.

  101. But selfishly, I thought that.

  102. So I bought the watch selfishly.

  103. And when I look at the watch,

  104. occasionally I'm reminded of my selfishness.

  105. I remember when we were getting married,

  106. I was sitting in the church

  107. and the bell rang and the doors opened

  108. and I looked at my watch.

  109. And I looked back and I saw Christina there

  110. all in white with her dad.

  111. I was like, wow.

  112. God is so good and amazing.

  113. And I remember that when I look at this watch sometimes.

  114. I've timed all of our kids' birth on this watch.

  115. One time Rachel, our first child,

  116. was 16 hours and Christina was in labor with her

  117. for 16 hours.

  118. It was getting really, really hard.

  119. And we were just the two of us

  120. and the doctor and the nurse.

  121. And the doctor came up and he said,

  122. okay, this is the last push.

  123. If you don't get out this time,

  124. we're gonna have to do something difficult.

  125. And he picked up this phone

  126. and all of a sudden there's like eight people in the room

  127. and forceps are coming out

  128. and all these things are happening.

  129. And I was just praying and praying,

  130. okay, God, please let Rachel come out,

  131. let Rachel come out.

  132. And the last put, Rachel came out.

  133. And I was like, wow, God is so good.

  134. And as I'm timing, I'm timing on my hand.

  135. Labor starts here, this given here,

  136. this, and so I'm keeping track and all these things.

  137. And at the end, I just put God is good.

  138. I remember when I shared two weeks ago,

  139. Christina had the ectopic pregnancy

  140. and she's bleeding out.

  141. And I was in the hospital in Patia

  142. and I was sitting there

  143. and the doctor said,

  144. well, it might be five hours.

  145. And I put my watch down,

  146. I looked at it and I pushed the button

  147. and I wondered,

  148. would I have a wife in five hours?

  149. And four and a half hours later,

  150. the doctor came out

  151. and said, everything's gonna be okay.

  152. And I thought, God is good.

  153. I remember two years later,

  154. I had a heart attack.

  155. It was the middle of the night,

  156. like two o'clock in the morning,

  157. Sunday in the morning.

  158. Christina took me to the hospital.

  159. And I gave her my ring and my watch

  160. as I went in.

  161. And I said to her,

  162. I'll see you in heaven.

  163. And I came out.

  164. And I look at this watch.

  165. I said, man, God is good.

  166. I remember the birth of our second child

  167. and the adoption of our third.

  168. And then in the fourth,

  169. we were up at Matilda

  170. and I was timing everything there.

  171. And Christina,

  172. because she has a blood condition,

  173. she couldn't take anything for painkillers.

  174. And we're trying to work it out

  175. and didn't work out.

  176. And she got in there

  177. and she was in delivery

  178. and she was,

  179. it was so funny.

  180. Well, it wasn't funny.

  181. But when I think about it now,

  182. the doctor,

  183. so Christina's,

  184. and Kate K's coming,

  185. and Christina's going,

  186. oh Jesus, oh Jesus, oh Jesus.

  187. And the doctor who's Indian goes,

  188. there's no Jesus here.

  189. No Jesus here.

  190. No Jesus.

  191. Christina goes,

  192. oh Jesus, oh Jesus,

  193. no Jesus here.

  194. And when Caitlin came out,

  195. I wrote on the back of my hand,

  196. Jesus was here.

  197. God is so faithful in our lives.

  198. Sometimes we attach his faithfulness

  199. to things like watches

  200. and songs

  201. and people.

  202. Sometimes we just forget.

  203. But it seems to me

  204. on this journey

  205. that God's principal purpose for us

  206. is that he's trying to do

  207. everything he can

  208. to keep our eyes off of ourself

  209. and to put them on him.

  210. God's main goal in our life

  211. is to put our eyes off of ourself

  212. and to put them on him.

  213. Okay, we've been looking

  214. at the gospel of Luke for a while.

  215. We've come to this last week

  216. in Jesus' life.

  217. We basically said it's his last day

  218. and we're thinking about

  219. what it means for the rest of our lives.

  220. Remember, Luke is written by Dr. Luke.

  221. He was a physician.

  222. He had a friend

  223. who was probably a high-ranking

  224. government official,

  225. very wealthy.

  226. But persecution had started happening

  227. within the Roman Empire

  228. and his friend wrote a letter to Luke

  229. and said,

  230. is it worth it?

  231. Is Jesus real?

  232. Is everything you told me true?

  233. Is it worth the suffering

  234. and the persecution?

  235. Should I hold on?

  236. And so Luke does all this compilation

  237. and interviews

  238. and he brings all the research together

  239. and he writes the gospel

  240. according to Luke

  241. as God's Holy Spirit

  242. indwells him and teaches him

  243. and shows him

  244. and helps him write

  245. and he writes the book of Acts.

  246. In the passage so far

  247. in his last day,

  248. we've seen this.

  249. We've seen that in God's kingdom,

  250. success is serving people.

  251. Remember that?

  252. We said in God's kingdom,

  253. success is serving people.

  254. Now our pride

  255. and our ambition

  256. in the world

  257. is gonna tell us

  258. that success

  259. is serving ourselves.

  260. But the passage said

  261. that if we ultimately do that,

  262. we're going to fail.

  263. That the only way

  264. that we can succeed

  265. in God's kingdom

  266. is we realize

  267. that God served us ultimately

  268. and because he did,

  269. we can let go

  270. and serve other people.

  271. We don't need to worry

  272. about our fear and ambition

  273. because God served us.

  274. He's going to take care of us.

  275. We ask the question

  276. as we raise our children

  277. and educate them,

  278. are we educating our children

  279. so that they will have

  280. a lot of people serve them?

  281. Are we educating our children

  282. so that they will serve other people

  283. and be a success

  284. in God's kingdom?

  285. And over and over,

  286. we see that God

  287. does everything he can do

  288. to take our eyes

  289. off of ourself

  290. and our eyes on him.

  291. We've learned in this book

  292. last week

  293. that the Bible

  294. is a book of failures.

  295. We learned that there's

  296. a lot of failures

  297. in the Bible

  298. and what we learned

  299. was that God knows

  300. that we're gonna fail.

  301. He expects us to fail.

  302. We talked about Peter

  303. and Peter failing

  304. and what we learned

  305. is that God does amazing things

  306. in our failures.

  307. We're a culture

  308. that's afraid to talk

  309. about failures.

  310. We don't wanna be a failure.

  311. We don't wanna mention it

  312. but what the Bible says

  313. is that when we fail,

  314. God does amazing things.

  315. Some of us don't wanna serve

  316. because we don't wanna fail.

  317. Some of us wanna do something

  318. but we need to take 50 classes

  319. before we do that

  320. because we don't wanna fail.

  321. But the passage says

  322. that when we fail

  323. and God knows

  324. that we're gonna fail,

  325. that God does something amazing.

  326. What he does is

  327. he wraps our failure

  328. in his grace

  329. and he changes us.

  330. He says for Peter,

  331. now that you've failed,

  332. now I can use you.

  333. Now that you've failed,

  334. now you can reach out

  335. to the other disciples

  336. and you can be a part

  337. of their lives.

  338. If you hadn't failed,

  339. Peter,

  340. I couldn't use you.

  341. We learned in the passage

  342. that even though

  343. we're gonna let God down,

  344. God never ever

  345. lets us down.

  346. Even though we're gonna fail God

  347. today and tomorrow

  348. at our work

  349. and in our home

  350. and in our marriage,

  351. God never fails us.

  352. God's primary work

  353. again and again

  354. is to get our eyes

  355. off of ourself

  356. and put our eyes on him

  357. and to realize how good

  358. and wonderful

  359. and beautiful he is.

  360. And so today

  361. we come to this passage,

  362. it's a communion passage.

  363. And what I wanna do

  364. is I just wanna look at it

  365. really briefly.

  366. We're gonna try something

  367. we've never tried before

  368. which is always a danger.

  369. But we're gonna look

  370. at the passage on communion

  371. and I wanted to look

  372. at a couple things

  373. because I believe

  374. that as we as a church

  375. look at communion

  376. and allow God's spirit

  377. to change us,

  378. we should change our thinking

  379. in a couple things.

  380. We're gonna think differently

  381. about ourselves.

  382. We're gonna think differently

  383. about other people.

  384. And we're gonna think differently

  385. about our focus.

  386. We're gonna think differently

  387. about our future.

  388. We're gonna think differently

  389. about where we're heading.

  390. The passage is written out

  391. for you in Luke 22,

  392. but before we get to Luke 22,

  393. you have to realize

  394. that Passover and communion

  395. started a long time before that.

  396. I mean, in the Bible

  397. in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  398. about 2,000 years before

  399. what we're reading here,

  400. we're told that our father Abraham,

  401. the father of our faith,

  402. who waited 100 years

  403. to have a son,

  404. finally has a son

  405. and God says,

  406. hey, I wanna see if you love me

  407. or if you wanna love this son more.

  408. And so he sends him

  409. to this faraway mountain,

  410. Mount Moriah,

  411. the mount where God will provide.

  412. And he goes,

  413. what I want you to do

  414. is I want you to make

  415. a mulloch there,

  416. which means I want you

  417. to sacrifice your son.

  418. I want you to sacrifice

  419. your son to me.

  420. I want you to take your eyes

  421. off yourself

  422. and I want you to put

  423. your eyes on me.

  424. And so we're told

  425. that Abraham goes there

  426. and he does that

  427. and right as he's about

  428. to sacrifice his son,

  429. remember his son asked him,

  430. well, where's the lamb?

  431. What does Abraham say?

  432. He said, well,

  433. God will provide the lamb.

  434. Take your eyes off

  435. of yourself

  436. and realize that God

  437. wants to do something amazing

  438. in your life.

  439. And so God provides this ram

  440. and it's caught in the bushes

  441. and it's perfect

  442. and he sacrificed it.

  443. A little later on

  444. in Genesis,

  445. we're told that there's

  446. this great famine

  447. that happens in the land

  448. and no one has food,

  449. no one has water,

  450. and God does something amazing

  451. and he takes these brothers

  452. who are in conflict

  453. and he sells one brother

  454. as a slave

  455. and Joseph goes to Egypt

  456. and through this terrible,

  457. terrible failure

  458. in brotherhood

  459. and familyhood,

  460. he does something amazing

  461. and he saves his people.

  462. The passage says

  463. that 430 years pass

  464. and there's a Pharaoh

  465. who no longer knows

  466. the God of Joseph

  467. and the people of God

  468. have become to multiply

  469. and multiply and multiply

  470. and they become a pain

  471. and the Pharaoh

  472. has put them into slavery

  473. and the bondage

  474. and life is terrible,

  475. terrible, terrible.

  476. And the passage says

  477. that at the right time,

  478. God sends a deliverer.

  479. He sends Moses

  480. in Genesis,

  481. in Exodus 15.

  482. And Moses goes to Pharaoh

  483. but Pharaoh's heart

  484. is hardened

  485. and God brings judgment

  486. upon judgment

  487. upon judgment

  488. and still Pharaoh says,

  489. no, no, no, no, no.

  490. I want to be God.

  491. There is no other God.

  492. Often a lot like us

  493. in our lives, right?

  494. I want to be God.

  495. I don't want another God.

  496. And finally God says,

  497. okay,

  498. one more judgment.

  499. I'm going to send

  500. the angel of death.

  501. I'm going to send

  502. the angel of judgment.

  503. And God warns Moses

  504. in the Exodus passage.

  505. He says,

  506. judgment is coming

  507. but by the way,

  508. there is a way

  509. that you can escape

  510. from this.

  511. it's called a Passover meal.

  512. I mean,

  513. it's the only way

  514. that you're going to be able

  515. to escape this judgment.

  516. The only way

  517. that you're going to be

  518. free from death

  519. and from condemnation

  520. is that you're going to have

  521. to partake of this meal.

  522. You're going to kill a lamb

  523. and then you're going to

  524. take a hyssop branch

  525. and you're going to

  526. smear its blood

  527. all over the door.

  528. And whoever does this,

  529. when the angel comes,

  530. whoever does this,

  531. they're going to be saved.

  532. But whoever doesn't do this,

  533. whoever doesn't do this,

  534. they will face judgment

  535. and they will perish.

  536. And I wonder

  537. as I read that passage,

  538. were the Jewish people

  539. like us today?

  540. Were there some people

  541. in there going,

  542. did God really say that?

  543. I mean,

  544. do I really need

  545. to make my doorway

  546. dirty with blood?

  547. And I'm a good person.

  548. I'm pretty good.

  549. I mean,

  550. I serve in a temple.

  551. I'm nice.

  552. I'm not as bad

  553. as that person.

  554. I wonder if there were people

  555. like us

  556. during that day

  557. who doubted God's word

  558. and doubted his goodness.

  559. But we're told

  560. in the Exodus passage

  561. that by the end of the day,

  562. in every house in Egypt,

  563. in every house,

  564. there was either

  565. a dead lamb

  566. or a dead person.

  567. there was either

  568. a dead lamb

  569. or a dead person.

  570. No one was going

  571. to be saved

  572. unless they had eaten

  573. the lamb

  574. and been covered

  575. by the blood.

  576. Everyone at the end

  577. of the day,

  578. think about this,

  579. everyone at the end

  580. of the day knew

  581. that the only reason

  582. they were alive

  583. because it was

  584. a little,

  585. furry,

  586. white,

  587. innocent animal

  588. had its throat slit

  589. and it died

  590. in their place.

  591. The Bible says

  592. that generation

  593. after generation

  594. after generation

  595. passed

  596. and year after year

  597. the father of the household

  598. would lead his family

  599. in a very specific ceremony.

  600. The ceremony

  601. would always start

  602. like this.

  603. The youngest person

  604. in the family

  605. would ask a question.

  606. They would say,

  607. why is this night

  608. different?

  609. than all the other nights?

  610. Why do we do this?

  611. Why do we do that?

  612. And the ceremony

  613. would include things

  614. like unleavened bread

  615. which was a symbol

  616. of haste

  617. and hardship

  618. in the wilderness.

  619. The ceremony

  620. would include

  621. bitter herbs

  622. which symbolized

  623. their bondage

  624. and their slavery

  625. and their captivity.

  626. It would have

  627. a red stew

  628. that the composture

  629. and the mixture

  630. would look just like

  631. the bricks that they made

  632. and in the ceremony

  633. there would be four cups

  634. and they would do

  635. these toasts

  636. and they would

  637. basically toast God

  638. and thank him

  639. for his goodness

  640. in their life.

  641. They would thank him

  642. for their freedom

  643. for their redemption

  644. for their peace

  645. for their new

  646. relationship with him

  647. and then

  648. a lamb

  649. would be killed

  650. and his blood

  651. would be stained

  652. everywhere

  653. and everybody

  654. would remember

  655. that the only reason

  656. they're alive

  657. is because God

  658. is good

  659. and somebody else

  660. had to die

  661. in their place.

  662. We get to Luke 22

  663. and we fast forward

  664. about 1500 years.

  665. Jesus has gone

  666. to Jerusalem

  667. and we've been talking

  668. about this for like

  669. a year, right?

  670. He's gone to Jerusalem

  671. and he's basically

  672. gone to Jerusalem

  673. to accomplish

  674. his exodus

  675. for God's people.

  676. I mean,

  677. he's going to do

  678. the exact same thing

  679. that Moses did

  680. in Egypt.

  681. He's going to do

  682. the exact same thing

  683. in Jerusalem

  684. for us.

  685. The people were in slavery.

  686. The people were in bondage.

  687. Now remember,

  688. Jerusalem was going

  689. to explode.

  690. I mean,

  691. there was some,

  692. Josephus and some scholars

  693. say there were

  694. 200,000,

  695. 200,000,

  696. 2 million people

  697. in Jerusalem

  698. during the festival.

  699. I mean,

  700. this was a special Passover

  701. because there was this rabbi

  702. and he was changing

  703. things around

  704. and everybody wanted

  705. to be at Jerusalem.

  706. So 2 million people,

  707. some of the estimates

  708. are there were

  709. about 200,000 families.

  710. So 200,000 families

  711. at 3 o'clock

  712. in the afternoon

  713. would take their sheep

  714. and the priests

  715. would blow the horn

  716. like a shofar

  717. and at the same time

  718. they would take their knives

  719. and they would cut

  720. the throat

  721. of the sheep.

  722. Can you imagine

  723. what that was like?

  724. 100,000 sheep dying

  725. at the same time?

  726. I mean,

  727. the sheep don't die well.

  728. They're bad,

  729. bad, bad.

  730. At the same time,

  731. 3 o'clock,

  732. and you heard

  733. this loud noise

  734. and the blood

  735. was gushing everywhere.

  736. I mean,

  737. it's told that

  738. there's thousands of priests

  739. that had these silver

  740. and these gold bowls

  741. and they went

  742. and they got the blood

  743. and they ran up

  744. to the temple

  745. and to the altar

  746. and they would pour

  747. the blood at the foot

  748. of the altar

  749. as a sacrifice,

  750. as an atonement

  751. for the sin

  752. and we're told

  753. that in Jerusalem

  754. there was this blood river

  755. that flowed out of the temple

  756. down into the Kidron

  757. and sometimes it got

  758. two or three feet high

  759. because 100,000 sheep

  760. were killed

  761. so that the people's sin

  762. might be passed over

  763. and hidden

  764. for a little while.

  765. Remember,

  766. it's Jesus' last day

  767. and the officials

  768. are out to kill him.

  769. We don't have it

  770. in your bulletin

  771. but please go back

  772. because in Luke 22,

  773. 1 through 6,

  774. you see this passage

  775. where the synagogue

  776. officials have conspired

  777. and Satan enters Judas

  778. and Judas says,

  779. I'll get him alone.

  780. I know you're worried

  781. about the crowds.

  782. I know that you're worried

  783. about you grabbing

  784. the temple.

  785. There's going to be

  786. this huge revolt.

  787. I'll get him alone.

  788. I'm the money changer.

  789. I have all the money

  790. so if he has to do something,

  791. I'm going to know

  792. where he's going to be

  793. and the minute I know

  794. where he's going to be,

  795. I'm going to tell you

  796. and so you can go

  797. and you can capture him

  798. in this room

  799. because no one of us

  800. will be there

  801. and it's going to be good.

  802. Jesus, we're told,

  803. knows that.

  804. The officials are out

  805. to kill him.

  806. Judas has betrayed him

  807. but he really desires

  808. to have this last Passover feast

  809. with his disciples.

  810. In Luke 22,

  811. it says Jesus sent Peter and John.

  812. He throws a monkey wrench in there.

  813. So now Jesus doesn't know

  814. where it's going to be.

  815. Only Peter and John

  816. know where it's going to be

  817. and we're told in the passage

  818. that Peter and John

  819. go to prepare a meal now.

  820. I'd like to ask the communion stewards

  821. and the worship leaders

  822. to come forward.

  823. When you're ready,

  824. you'll come up

  825. and you're going to receive

  826. a red band.

  827. Don't do anything with it yet.

  828. You're going to receive

  829. both elements.

  830. Don't do anything with it yet.

  831. But as you think

  832. and as you come forward,

  833. wonder,

  834. what was it like

  835. on Passover?

  836. What was it like

  837. when you went

  838. to get your sheep?

  839. What was it like

  840. when the trumpet blowed

  841. and you slaughtered it?

  842. What was it like

  843. knowing that the only reason

  844. that you're there

  845. is because somebody

  846. had to die

  847. in your place?

  848. After you've received

  849. all the elements,

  850. go back to your seat

  851. and I'll come back up

  852. and we'll take them

  853. together as a family.

  854. The first thing

  855. before we take the elements

  856. that I see in this passage

  857. about communion

  858. and I think it's a challenge

  859. to us

  860. is that when we come

  861. to God's word,

  862. the question is

  863. why?

  864. Why are we taking

  865. communion today?

  866. Have we examined

  867. our lives?

  868. Have we asked the question

  869. that the little kids ask

  870. before communion?

  871. Why do we do this?

  872. Why is this any more

  873. special than today?

  874. The passage

  875. in verse 21,

  876. which you don't have here

  877. but you have to go home

  878. and look at it,

  879. says immediately

  880. immediately after Jesus

  881. did that,

  882. he told his disciples

  883. that one of them

  884. was going to betray him.

  885. Immediately the questions

  886. round out the same

  887. in each time in Greek,

  888. surely not I,

  889. surely not I,

  890. surely not I,

  891. surely not I

  892. and then Judas

  893. looked him in the face

  894. and he said,

  895. Master,

  896. surely not I

  897. and there was

  898. a big question

  899. and we're told

  900. that they examined

  901. their hearts

  902. and they examined

  903. their lives

  904. and they wondered

  905. were they the one

  906. who was going

  907. to betray him?

  908. Were they the one

  909. who was going

  910. to run away?

  911. Were they the ones

  912. who were going

  913. to fail him?

  914. The meal represents

  915. a covenant.

  916. It's a relationship

  917. between God

  918. and us.

  919. The Old Testament

  920. says that the

  921. sacrifice of sheep

  922. do not forgive sins.

  923. It just covers them up

  924. and points to the future

  925. where someone else

  926. will have to come

  927. and forgive their sins

  928. and when we come

  929. to the communion elements

  930. and we take them,

  931. what we are saying is,

  932. what we are acknowledging

  933. is that we need Jesus.

  934. What we're saying

  935. is that Jesus

  936. is the only way.

  937. What we're saying

  938. is I can work hard,

  939. I can do all these things

  940. but in the end

  941. I'm still broken

  942. and sinful

  943. and I need Christ.

  944. I mean,

  945. every other religion,

  946. every other philosophy,

  947. every other thought

  948. of mankind

  949. is going to say

  950. that you get saved

  951. because you work hard

  952. and you do the right things

  953. and you're a good person

  954. but when we come

  955. to the communion table,

  956. what Christianity

  957. is saying

  958. is that none of that

  959. is true.

  960. That we're here

  961. as a gift

  962. and the question is

  963. are we going to make

  964. that gift ours

  965. or are we going to eat of it

  966. and to realize

  967. what it means?

  968. The passage says

  969. that when we come

  970. to the table

  971. we're called

  972. to continually examine

  973. our lives

  974. and to see

  975. if the grace

  976. that God has poured out

  977. upon us

  978. has it changed us.

  979. Do we think differently

  980. now in light of the cross?

  981. Do we act differently

  982. in our homes?

  983. Do we act differently

  984. in our work?

  985. Do we act differently

  986. among our friends?

  987. Do we understand

  988. the massive cost

  989. it costs

  990. to forgive us?

  991. I mean do our actions

  992. change?

  993. Are our hearts different?

  994. Do we ask the question

  995. maybe

  996. in light of what God

  997. has done for me

  998. is this a good thing

  999. for me to be doing

  1000. right now?

1001. In light of the sacrifice

  1002. that Christ has made

  1003. for me

1004. is this the right choice

  1005. for me?

  1006. Do I understand grace?

  1007. Have I allowed God

  1008. to change me?

  1009. Do I live today

1010. as if it cost Jesus

  1011. his only son

  1012. but it cost God

  1013. his only son?

1014. Do I live that way?

  1015. When we come

  1016. to the communion

  1017. it challenges us

  1018. to think about ourselves

  1019. but also challenges

  1020. to think about

  1021. our relationships.

  1022. The passage says here

  1023. and we all know

  1024. that communion

  1025. was a family thing

  1026. and you did it

  1027. among your family

1028. but here for the first time

  1029. Jesus is separating

  1030. these men

  1031. from their family

  1032. he's bringing

  1033. them together

  1034. and basically

  1035. what he's saying

  1036. is that

1037. there is a new family

  1038. it's not a DNA family

  1039. but it's a

  1040. it's a spiritual family

1041. and he's going to tell us

  1042. throughout the scripture

  1043. that this spiritual family

  1044. brought together

  1045. by his blood

  1046. and his sacrifice

  1047. is stronger

  1048. than our biological families.

1049. I mean we looked at it

  1050. last week

  1051. last week

  1052. the disciples got together

  1053. and they were arguing

1054. over who's going to be

  1055. the greatest

1056. and who's going to serve whom

1057. and Jesus said to them

1058. that's not how we act

  1059. in God's family.

1060. That's not how we treat

  1061. each other

  1062. and the only way

1063. that we can treat each other

1064. the way that God wants us to

1065. is if we trust him.

1066. I mean at the Passover meal

  1067. we're called to examine

  1068. our relationships.

1069. I mean are our relationships strong?

1070. Are we a part of God's family?

1071. Are we a part of God's family

  1072. and people here?

1073. Or do we just drop by

1074. because we want to feel good

  1075. about ourselves?

  1076. Are we plastic people?

  1077. communion calls us

  1078. to examine

  1079. our relationships

  1080. with others

  1081. and to ask us

  1082. how are we doing

  1083. with the person

  1084. next door to us

  1085. because they are

  1086. our family.

  1087. They're who we're going

1088. to be in heaven with

  1089. forever.

  1090. Father, I just

  1091. come before you

  1092. and just confess

  1093. my sin

  1094. and selfishness.

  1095. So often

  1096. the focus

  1097. and thought

  1098. is of myself

1099. and it's not on you.

1100. Father, we come to you

  1101. as your people

  1102. and we confess

  1103. our brokenness

  1104. and our sin.

  1105. we ask you

  1106. to change us,

  1107. to redeem us,

  1108. to fix us,

  1109. to bring us back

  1110. the way we are

  1111. supposed to be.

  1112. Help us to think

  1113. of ourselves

  1114. in the right way

  1115. in light of communion.

  1116. Help us to realize

  1117. what it means

  1118. to have this person

  1119. die for us

  1120. and the only reason

  1121. that we are here,

  1122. the only reason

  1123. that we have hope,

  1124. the only reason

1125. that we have a future

  1126. is because someone

  1127. else died for us.

  1128. Father, I confess

  1129. the way I treat

  1130. my brothers and sisters

  1131. sometimes.

  1132. I have to admit

  1133. that often

  1134. I'm like the disciples.

  1135. I'm looking for people

  1136. to serve me

  1137. instead of

  1138. me serving them.

1139. Father, I pray for us

  1140. as a church.

1141. I know that there are

1142. a lot of people here

  1143. who struggle

  1144. with these things

  1145. and I pray, Lord,

  1146. for your forgiveness.

1147. I pray for your mercy

1148. I pray that your grace

  1149. would change us

  1150. and would make us

  1151. a different people

  1152. and people would look

  1153. at this congregation,

  1154. your family,

  1155. and say,

  1156. something's different here

1157. and they would ask questions

  1158. just as they did

  1159. the early church.

  1160. Father, in the midst

  1161. of all this,

  1162. we need you desperately

1163. and we know that you know

1164. that we're going to fail.

  1165. So we thank you

  1166. for your son

1167. whose blood brings us life

  1168. and erases

  1169. our sin.

  1170. We love you.

  1171. On the night

  1172. that Jesus was betrayed,

1173. he took a loaf of bread

  1174. and he broke it.

1175. And what he said next

  1176. would have freaked

  1177. everybody out

  1178. because for 1,500 years

  1179. he said this bread

  1180. represents the bread

  1181. of haste

1182. and the bread of pain

1183. and the bread of suffering

1184. and the bread of wandering

  1185. in the wilderness.

  1186. But this time

  1187. what he says is

  1188. this bread

  1189. represents me.

  1190. The pain

  1191. and the suffering

  1192. the brokenness

1193. that I will face for you.

  1194. The body of Christ

  1195. broken for you.

  1196. We're told a little while later

  1197. he took a cup

  1198. and no one knows

  1199. which cup it was

  1200. out of the four.

1201. Maybe it was the third one.

  1202. The cup of redemption.

  1203. The cup of payback.

  1204. A buyback.

  1205. And this time

  1206. he said

  1207. instead of

  1208. this blood

  1209. this cup represents

  1210. the blood of lambs

1211. that were shed for you

  1212. to cover you

  1213. so that you'll have

  1214. to do it again

  1215. and again

  1216. and again

  1217. focusing towards

1218. when it's going to be finished.

  1219. This time he says

  1220. this is my blood.

1221. This is what all the lambs

  1222. for 2,000 years

  1223. have pointed to.

  1224. And in my life

  1225. your sin

  1226. is forgiven.

1227. You have a new relationship now.

  1228. You're brought back

  1229. to the Father.

  1230. You're my children.

  1231. The blood of Christ

  1232. shed for you.

  1233. One final thought.

1234. As we come to communion

1235. and we think about the wine

1236. we think about the bread

1237. we think about the sacrifice

1238. we think about the lamb

  1239. we think about Jesus.

  1240. In verse 19

  1241. we're told something

  1242. very special.

1243. He said he had come

  1244. and taken some bread

1245. and he had given thanks

  1246. and he broke it

1247. and he gave it to them

1248. saying this is my body

  1249. which is given

  1250. which is paid out.

  1251. It's actually

  1252. it's a banker's term

  1253. he just

1254. he is paid in full

1255. my body's spent on you

1256. do this in remembrance of me

  1257. and that word remembrance

  1258. means to

  1259. continually

  1260. continually

  1261. continually

1262. put it before your face.

  1263. The Greeks would say

1264. that time is like an eraser

1265. and it gets into our mind

  1266. and it erases us

  1267. and we forget things.

  1268. Jesus is saying

  1269. that basically

  1270. in our lives

  1271. we're going to become

  1272. so busy

  1273. that Hong Kong

1274. is going to get out of control

  1275. and he's saying

  1276. that sometimes

  1277. we're going to

1278. we're going to forget him.

  1279. And we're called

1280. to come to the communion table

  1281. and to remember

  1282. and to remember

  1283. his goodness.

  1284. Verse 15 says

  1285. that we'll remember

  1286. his desire

  1287. to be with us.

  1288. The word actually means

  1289. I desire to desire.

  1290. It actually means lust.

  1291. The passage says

1292. that God lusts after you.

1293. He wants to be with you

  1294. so much.

1295. He wants to be with you

  1296. and have a relationship

  1297. with you.

  1298. And sometimes

  1299. in the busyness

  1300. we forget that.

  1301. But Jesus says

  1302. remember.

  1303. Remember.

  1304. Verse 15 and 19

1305. says we were to remember

  1306. because of the suffering.

  1307. We were to remember

  1308. that Christ is humiliated.

  1309. We remember

1310. that he hangs on a tree.

  1311. We were to remember

  1312. the pain.

  1313. We were to remember

1314. as we walk through life

  1315. and we feel broken

  1316. and lost

  1317. and forsaken

  1318. and useless

1319. that we have a Savior

  1320. who died for us

  1321. and through his death

  1322. were given

  1323. ultimate value.

  1324. Jesus said remember this

  1325. because you're going

  1326. to get busy

  1327. and you're going

  1328. to forget this.

  1329. He says remember

  1330. throughout the whole passage

1331. that I am in control

  1332. of all things.

  1333. I know they're looking

1334. for me at the house

  1335. and so I go

  1336. to a different place.

  1337. I know they want

  1338. to grab me

  1339. before the Passover

  1340. and get it done

  1341. and kill me

  1342. but I have a different plan.

  1343. I know what's going on

  1344. in your life.

  1345. You're living life

  1346. and it's terrible

  1347. and it's hard

  1348. or it's great

  1349. and you're wondering

  1350. if he's there

  1351. and you're wondering

  1352. if he's in control

  1353. and you're wondering

1354. if he's in our life

  1355. and he's working

  1356. through our lives

  1357. and when we look

  1358. at the cup

  1359. and when we look

  1360. at the cross

  1361. and we look

  1362. at God's word

  1363. we're called

  1364. to remember

  1365. that he's with us

  1366. that he'll never

  1367. forsake us

  1368. he never gives up

  1369. on us

  1370. he's the God

  1371. of second chances

  1372. the question is

  1373. are we going

  1374. to take him up

  1375. on that

  1376. are we going

  1377. to try to be

  1378. and live life

1379. the way we want to

  1380. I'm going to ask

  1381. the worship team

  1382. to come back up

  1383. they're going to

  1384. finish this up

1385. with one or two songs

  1386. when you came up

  1387. you got a band

  1388. a red band

  1389. as Jeremy leads us

  1390. in worship

  1391. what I would like

  1392. you to do

  1393. is I'd like you

1394. to turn to the person

  1395. next to you

  1396. your family member

1397. and I would like you

  1398. to have them

  1399. tie that band

  1400. around your wrist

  1401. nicely

  1402. not too tight

  1403. no blue fingers

  1404. my hope

  1405. and my prayer

  1406. is that this

  1407. piece of thread

  1408. around our wrist

  1409. is a reminder

  1410. it calls us

  1411. to memory

  1412. of all that God

  1413. has done

  1414. and all his goodness

  1415. I'll come up

  1416. and close this

  1417. in a minute

  1418. we are the people

  1419. of God

  1420. purchased by his life

  1421. his blood

  1422. shed for us

  1423. the passage says

1424. he just gave it all

  1425. in the blood

  1426. he gave it all

  1427. in his body

  1428. he gave it all

  1429. because he knew

  1430. that we

  1431. we needed it

  1432. all

  1433. my prayer

  1434. is as you walk

  1435. away from this

  1436. communion time

  1437. that you'd realize

  1438. that as God's people

  1439. we need to start

  1440. thinking differently

  1441. about ourselves

  1442. maybe some of us

  1443. need to start acting

  1444. like God's people

  1445. as God's people

  1446. we need to start

  1447. thinking differently

  1448. about the people

  1449. around us

  1450. maybe to realize

  1451. that they're our family

  1452. and somehow

  1453. God supernaturally

  1454. brought us together

  1455. by his design

  1456. he knew

  1457. that we needed

  1458. each other

  1459. maybe we need

  1460. to start acting

  1461. like a family

  1462. my prayer is

  1463. as we leave here

  1464. that our focus

  1465. our thoughts

  1466. would always be

  1467. about remembrance

  1468. would always be

  1469. about remembering

  1470. God

  1471. Christ on a tree

  1472. what he's done

  1473. for us

  1474. how he's purchased

  1475. our life

  1476. how he cares

  1477. for us

  1478. there's nothing

  1479. we need to fear

  1480. there's nothing

  1481. we need to doubt

  1482. because he's in control

  1483. of everything

  1484. even his own death

  1485. will we start

  1486. living like that

  1487. will we trust him

  1488. because he's good

  1489. my hope is that

1490. you would carry this band

  1491. with you

  1492. for a day

  1493. or two

  1494. or however long

  1495. and every time

  1496. you look down

  1497. on it

  1498. you remember

  1499. a savior

  1500. broken for you

  1501. you remember

  1502. that your only reason

  1503. that we're here

  1504. is because somebody

  1505. died

  1506. for us

  1507. who didn't deserve it

  1508. we'd ask God

  1509. to use those thoughts

  1510. in his spirit

  1511. to change us

  1512. and to make us

  1513. his people

  1514. more

  1515. Christ's body

  1516. broken for you

  1517. God

  1518. in control

  1519. of everything

  1520. in your life

  1521. God

  1522. passionately

  1523. pursuing you

  1524. and wanting to have

  1525. a relationship

  1526. with you

  1527. a God

  1528. who says

1529. he's going to do it

  1530. to the end

1531. that I'm going to be

  1532. with you

  1533. until the end

  1534. until the kingdom comes

  1535. we eat it together

  1536. in the kingdom

1537. I'm going to bring you

  1538. all the way

  1539. if you trust me

  1540. Father we thank you

  1541. for this day

  1542. we thank you

  1543. for your words

  1544. that are so powerful

  1545. but Lord

1546. we pray that we would

  1547. eat them

  1548. we would eat you

1549. we would eat your word

1550. we would allow your spirit

  1551. to change us

1552. help us to be in awe

  1553. of your grace

1554. help us to be in awe

  1555. of your mercy

1556. help us to be in awe

  1557. of goodness

  1558. and Lord

  1559. we just confess

  1560. when we're not

  1561. because the passage

  1562. says that we're going

  1563. to forget

1564. we're going to become busy

  1565. help us to remember

1566. help us to help each other

  1567. remember

  1568. help us to come

  1569. alongside each other

1570. when we're in the midst

  1571. of the junk

1572. and we bring to memory

1573. for our brother and sister

  1574. the Savior

  1575. who died for us

  1576. because he did

  1577. everything else

1578. is going to be okay

  1579. everything else

1580. is going to be okay

1581. Lord I pray for those

  1582. who didn't receive

  1583. a band in here

  1584. today

  1585. we have a band

  1586. ready for them

  1587. my prayer is that

  1588. they would ask

  1589. a lot of questions

  1590. and try to understand

  1591. what does it mean

1592. that Christ had to die

  1593. for them

  1594. what does it mean

  1595. to have a sacrifice

  1596. pay for their

  1597. their rebellion

  1598. their bondage

  1599. their idols

1600. I pray they would ask

  1601. people

  1602. they would come up

  1603. and ask the elders

  1604. ask myself

1605. so we could talk to them

  1606. about the most wonderful

  1607. thing in our life

  1608. it's a Savior

1609. who loves us so much

1610. and he pursues us so much

1611. and he never gives up

  1612. on us

  1613. and he's in control

  1614. of our lives

1615. and we could trust him

  1616. we can trust him

  1617. Father help us

  1618. to be a church

  1619. that acts

  1620. like your people

  1621. loves like your people

  1622. is a community

  1623. like your people

  1624. and we know

  1625. that the only way

1626. this is going to happen

  1627. is you change us

  1628. so Lord

  1629. we're thankful

  1630. that you continually

1631. do things in our life

  1632. to take our eyes

  1633. off of ourself

1634. and to put them on you

1635. sometimes you use a song

  1636. sometimes you use

  1637. a piece of metal

  1638. junk watch

1639. but more often than not

  1640. you use the body

  1641. and the bread

  1642. broken for us

  1643. Lord we love you

  1644. we need you desperately

1645. we pray all these things

1646. in your son Jesus name

  1647. amen

  1648. God bless you

1649. we'll see you back here

  1650. next Sunday

  1651. you

  1652. do

  1653. we

  1654. you

  1655. you
