  1. Good morning.

  2. Sunling fai luk.

  3. Kong hai fai choy.

  4. So this is Chinese New Year season.

  5. It's a season of blessings.

  6. I think everyone in life searches for blessings,

  7. even the little kids out there, right?

  8. Like, after service today, you'll see it.

  9. Here's what's going to happen.

  10. They're going to swarm around every single married person in here

  11. looking for these.

  12. And they're going to come up to you and they're going to say,

  13. Lai si, dao loi.

  14. Because they want to be blessed,

  15. and in their mind, getting lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of red pockets

  16. is equal to being blessed.

  17. And it's something that doesn't go away as we get older.

  18. We just don't necessarily get it in Lai si.

  19. I think every single one of us wants to be blessed in this upcoming year.

  20. But I think the way we define blessings could be very different for some of us.

  21. And I think for some of us, there's not necessarily a fixed standard of

  22. this is blessing, this is not.

  23. So I think I could come up to six different people one year from today

  24. and ask each of them, were you blessed this past year?

  25. And maybe one would say, yes, I made lots and lots of money.

  26. And one would say, yes, I was absolutely blessed this past year.

  27. I got straight A's in school.

  28. One could say, I wasn't really blessed this year

  29. because I didn't get that promotion at work.

  30. And another right next to them could say, yes, I was blessed this past year

  31. because I didn't lose my job.

  32. One could say, no, I wasn't blessed this past year.

  33. My boyfriend dumped me.

  34. And then another right next to them could say, yes, I was absolutely blessed this past year.

  35. My boyfriend dumped me.

  36. It could happen.

  37. And I think if we look at the Bible, it paints a very clear picture of blessing.

  38. And this story that we just had read to us in Exodus 33 of the Israelites in the desert

  39. gives us a very clear picture of this.

  40. Now to give a little backstory, the Israelites 400 years previously had received a promise from God

  41. that they would be a great nation, that they would rule over this land,

  42. that it would be a land flowing with milk and honey, that it would be good.

  43. And for the previous 400 years, they have been slaves in a foreign land.

  44. Now the Bible doesn't explicitly tell us this,

  45. but I'm sure that at some point in that 400 year time period,

  46. people started to doubt whether God was actually going to keep his promise.

  47. Maybe he's not strong enough to, maybe he's not reliable enough to.

  48. You know, he made this promise, but we don't see any progress towards the fulfillment of it.

  49. And they slaved away and slaved away.

  50. And finally, one day, this guy Moses comes.

  51. He performs these great feats.

  52. And the Egyptians, the people who are keeping them as slaves,

  53. say, get out of here.

  54. You're trouble.

  55. We don't want you anymore.

  56. And finally, the Israelites are free.

  57. They're setting off to their new land.

  58. Hope has come.

  59. They're ready.

  60. They're going across the desert towards this land of milk and honey

  61. that is soon to be theirs.

  62. And they have a hiccup along the way.

  63. You know, Moses, their leader, is up talking to God,

  64. and the people build this idol, which God has just told them,

  65. don't do that.

  66. And God is not happy with them.

  67. But, you know, they wake up this one morning,

  68. and it seems to be a morning like any other.

  69. And if you were to go up to anyone in the Israelite camp that day

  70. and say to them,

  71. what does it look like for you to be blessed in this upcoming year?

  72. I think there are a handful of answers that they would give you.

  73. One, we are going to settle in our new land.

  74. We're going to take it over,

  75. and we're finally going to have this promise that God gave us fulfilled.

  76. We will be able to build houses and live in them

  77. and not have to be living in tents as nomads anymore.

  78. We will be able to farm our own food

  79. and not have to eat the same thing day after day after day.

  80. We can have variety in our diet.

  81. That is going to be wonderful.

  82. And God appears to them,

  83. and he speaks to them,

  84. and he tells them everything that they would have just listed right there,

  85. they're going to get.

  86. Listen to this in verses 1 and 3 of Exodus 33.

  87. The Lord said to Moses,

  88. Depart.

  89. Go up from here,

  90. you and the people whom you have brought up out of the land of Egypt,

  91. to the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  92. saying to your offspring,

  93. I will give it.

  94. So he's saying,

  95. Go up to the land that I have promised you.

  96. I will send an angel before you,

  97. and I will drive out all these lands.

  98. So I'm going to give it to you.

  99. You're going to take it over.

  100. He says,

  101. Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey,

  102. but I will not go up among you,

  103. lest I consume you on the way,

  104. for you're a stiff-necked people.

  105. God says,

  106. Go up.

  107. I'm going to give you this land.

  108. You're going to take it over.

  109. It is a good land,

  110. and you can have it.

  111. But I won't be with you.

  112. See, that little incident with building the idol,

  113. God was not happy,

  114. and he told them,

  115. I'm going to keep my promise.

  116. I'm going to give you this land,

  117. but I'm not going with you.

  118. And the people look at all of these blessings

  119. that they were so excited about.

  120. We're going to have our own land.

  121. We're going to have our own houses.

  122. We're going to have food to eat

  123. that's not just bread day after day after day.

  124. And when they see this promise

  125. in light of the fact that God's not going to be with them,

  126. they don't rejoice.

  127. They don't celebrate.

  128. They go into a time of mourning.

  129. Because the nation of Israel realizes

  130. that all the blessings that God can give to them

  131. mean nothing

  132. if it's not accompanied by God himself.

  133. The nation of Israel realizes

  134. that the presence of God among them

  135. is the greatest blessing.

  136. And that in comparison to that,

  137. everything else falls so miserably short

  138. that if you can have it all without God's presence,

  139. it's not a cause for celebration.

  140. It's a cause for mourning.

  141. So Moses goes up to God,

  142. and he begs God,

  143. God,

  144. please,

  145. we are your people.

  146. Don't abandon us.

  147. Come with us.

  148. And God says,

  149. all right,

  150. I will go with you.

  151. He gives them this wish.

  152. God doesn't come to Moses and say,

  153. Moses,

  154. you have your priorities all wrong.

  155. You need all these other things.

  156. You don't really need me.

  157. God's like,

  158. yeah,

  159. Moses,

  160. you got it right.

  161. You need me.

  162. But I think this story

  163. gives us an interesting perspective

  164. from the Bible

  165. that everything they could want,

  166. everything they dreamt of,

  167. when it was held out in front of them

  168. and they were told you can have it,

  169. but God's not going to be with it.

  170. They abandon it.

  171. They give it up

  172. because the presence of God in their lives

  173. is the greatest blessing.

  174. You know,

  175. it's a simple concept,

  176. but super,

  177. super deep.

  178. It's simple enough

  179. that even a child can understand it.

  180. I was talking to a very proud father

  181. from Watermark a week ago.

  182. He was telling me a story

  183. about his children.

  184. A couple months ago,

  185. the kids transitioned Sunday school classes

  186. up to the next grade

  187. and his daughter was moving

  188. from stream class to river class,

  189. which means she's very young.

  190. And she was scared.

  191. She was nervous

  192. because all she's ever known

  193. is stream class.

  194. And what's going to happen in river class?

  195. I don't know.

  196. Are the people going to like me there?

  197. Is it going to be fun there?

  198. Are they going to be mean to me there?

  199. And as the kids were dismissed

  200. going out into the hallway,

  201. she stopped in the middle of the hall

  202. and started crying

  203. and said,

  204. Mommy,

  205. I don't want to go to river class.

  206. And her older brother,

  207. that same exact day,

  208. was moving out of river class

  209. into Rapids class,

  210. which meant that he wouldn't be

  211. in class with her.

  212. And he sees his sister crying.

  213. He comes up to her

  214. and he puts his arm around her

  215. and he says,

  216. It's going to be okay.

  217. You're going to love river class.

  218. They play fun games

  219. and tell us Bible stories

  220. and the teachers are really cool

  221. and they teach us about God.

  222. And God will be with you.

  223. And today I'm going to a new class

  224. and God's going to be with me too.

  225. And the little girl

  226. looked up at her mom

  227. and she said,

  228. Will God really be with me?

  229. And the mom said,

  230. Yes.

  231. And the daughter had the courage

  232. all of a sudden

  233. to go to this new class

  234. and she loved it.

  235. And I know that's sort of a silly story

  236. about this little girl

  237. who had this fear

  238. that seemed sort of irrational

  239. to all of us.

  240. But when we think about it

  241. on the grand scheme of things,

  242. the things that were scaring her there

  243. are the exact same things

  244. that we get worried about.

  245. Fear of the unknown

  246. for us or people that we love.

  247. Fear of stepping out

  248. from places where we're comfortable

  249. to places where we don't know

  250. what's going to happen.

  251. Fear of what does the future hold

  252. because we can't tell.

  253. It's the same exact issues

  254. that we face

  255. that this little girl is facing.

  256. And it's the same exact solution

  257. of God's presence

  258. that is ultimately what we need.

  259. And I know sometimes

  260. it can be sort of nerve-wracking

  261. when we hear this.

  262. You know,

  263. I need God's presence

  264. but do I have God's presence?

  265. And if we're Christians,

  266. the Bible promises us

  267. that we do.

  268. The Bible says

  269. that Jesus was born as a baby.

  270. They called his name Emmanuel

  271. which means God with us.

  272. Jesus came to earth

  273. to be God with us.

  274. He grew up

  275. and he was killed

  276. for you and for me

  277. to give us

  278. this relationship with God

  279. that we need.

  280. and then he rose again

  281. and the Bible says

  282. that he met with his followers

  283. before going back up to heaven

  284. and he gave them

  285. this one last piece of teaching

  286. and the very last thing

  287. that he said to them.

  288. He could have told them anything.

  289. The one last thing

  290. that he wanted them to remember

  291. more than anything else.

  292. You know what he said?

  293. He said,

  294. I will be with you always.

  295. I'm not leaving you.

  296. I'm not abandoning you.

  297. I am with you.

  298. You are my people.

  299. I am with you.

  300. He could have told them,

  301. I'm going to make you

  302. super rich and powerful.

  303. That is the blessing you need.

  304. He could have told them,

  305. I am going to keep you very safe

  306. because that is the blessing you need.

  307. But he doesn't say that.

  308. He says,

  309. I'm going to be with you.

  310. And everything else that happens,

  311. everything else that could go wrong,

  312. it's going to be okay

  313. because I am with you.

  314. And if we're here today

  315. and we're not Christians,

  316. this fact that God's presence

  317. is the biggest blessing

  318. can be good news for us

  319. or bad news for us.

  320. Good news

  321. because he says

  322. anyone who believes in him

  323. can be saved.

  324. Anyone who trusts in him

  325. can become one of his people

  326. and he will be with us.

  327. But bad news

  328. because if we refuse

  329. to trust in him,

  330. there's no amount of effort

  331. we can put in,

  332. no amount of trying

  333. that we can manufacture

  334. that will give us this blessing

  335. through our efforts.

  336. You know,

  337. the Bible again and again

  338. and again and again

  339. talks about how God's presence

  340. in our lives

  341. is the greatest blessing

  342. and we don't have time

  343. to go into all of these

  344. different places today.

  345. but if you look through

  346. your Bible,

  347. if you read it,

  348. you'll see again

  349. and again and again

  350. that God's presence

  351. in our lives

  352. is the greatest blessing.

  353. And as we close today,

  354. I want to leave us

  355. with a little diagnostic

  356. for our hearts

  357. to see,

  358. you know,

  359. is God truly

  360. our greatest blessing?

  361. is that how we see

  362. the world?

  363. And here's the question.

  364. If God were to appear

  365. to you today

  366. and say to you,

  367. in this next year,

  368. I will give you

  369. a billion U.S. dollars

  370. but I won't be with you.

  371. Would you see that

  372. as a blessing?

  373. Would you jump

  374. at that opportunity

  375. and say,

  376. yes,

  377. let's go for it?

  378. How about this?

  379. If God were to appear

  380. to you today

  381. and he said,

  382. in this next year,

  383. you're going to lose

  384. your job.

  385. Also,

  386. you're going to get

  387. severely sick.

  388. You're going to struggle

  389. to make ends meet.

  390. It's going to be difficult.

  391. There's going to be

  392. some long,

  393. sleepless nights.

  394. It's going to be tough

  395. to feed your family.

  396. You'll have to really

  397. downsize your style

  398. of living.

  399. But through it all,

  400. I will be with you.

  401. Would we take that

  402. over the billion dollars

  403. without God?

  404. And I know

  405. it's not that simple.

  406. I know God's not

  407. appearing to us today,

  408. throwing that option

  409. in front of us

  410. and saying,

  411. once for all,

  412. you make this decision,

  413. let's go for it.

  414. Because really,

  415. life doesn't happen

  416. in those huge moments

  417. like that most of the time.

  418. Most of the time,

  419. it happens in thousands

  420. of small decisions

  421. throughout the course

  422. of the day,

  423. every single day.

  424. Thousands of small decisions

  425. where we get to make

  426. the choice,

  427. God,

  428. do I truly value

  429. your presence

  430. more than anything

  431. else in my life?

  432. And it's not just

  433. something that we do today,

  434. it's something we do

  435. tomorrow and the day

  436. after and the day

  437. after,

  438. where we choose

  439. again and again

  440. and again,

  441. do I truly value

  442. God's presence

  443. as the greatest treasure

  444. in my life

  445. more than anything else?

  446. Let's pray.

  447. Father,

  448. we thank you

  449. for your presence.

  450. We thank you

  451. that you are

  452. the greatest blessing

  453. that we need.

  454. We pray that

  455. in this coming year

  456. that we would be aware

  457. of how amazing

  458. of a blessing that is.

  459. That like the Israelites,

  460. if we have the opportunity

  461. for all the wealth

  462. and all the treasures

  463. that we can imagine

  464. without you,

  465. that we would say

  466. your presence is greater.

  467. you are the greater blessing.

  468. God,

  469. please help us

  470. to be aware of this.

  471. Help us to make choices

  472. every day

  473. in light of this fact.

  474. Thank you

  475. that you love us

  476. and are with us.

  477. In Jesus' name,

  478. amen.
