  1. I might have to move from this spot because there's going to be visuals with this sermon

  2. and I'm not sure if I can stand here with the overhead on, but we'll find out in a moment.

  3. Sometimes a few words can make all of the difference.

  4. Sometimes a few words can make all of the difference in the world.

  5. Some of you have heard before the story of how I came to ask Louise to marry me.

  6. I know that it was in the late afternoon.

  7. I wish I could remember the time precisely.

  8. I know that it was the 15th of May, 1981.

  9. So for the purpose of this, let's say it was 4 o'clock in the afternoon.

  10. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon, I said to Louise,

  11. Louise, will you marry me?

  12. Just five words.

  13. Louise, will you marry me?

  14. Five simple words.

  15. And she's right about most things and she claims that she just waited a few seconds.

  16. I'm sure it was like 15 minutes.

  17. It felt like forever.

  18. I wouldn't have asked her to marry me if I didn't think she'd say yes.

  19. But of course, there's always that little bit of a doubt that she might say no.

  20. And then she said to me very properly, she said, you should be on your knees.

  21. And I thought about that for a few seconds and I knew that she was worth it.

  22. And so I got on my knees and I asked a second time, Louise, will you marry me?

  23. And then I'm sure there was a 15 minute wait.

  24. But she says it was only a few seconds and she's probably correct.

  25. And then she said yes.

  26. And, you know, if that all happened at 4 o'clock, I know it was the late afternoon of the 15th of May, 1981.

  27. Life for Louise and me was very different at 3.55 on the 15th of May than it was at 4.05 in the 15th of May.

  28. And the difference hanged around five simple words and then the response of yes.

  29. Today, I'm going to do something which is a little bit different for me and for this church.

  30. I'm going to share with you very briefly the basic Christian story.

  31. And at the end of sharing with you the very basic Christian story,

  32. I'm going to invite those who have not invited Jesus into their life to invite Jesus into their life.

  33. Some of you might have been coming to this church for a while and you've heard sermons on this and on that.

  34. And maybe you're like me, that you felt, you know, quite a few years ago,

  35. you felt an increasing drawing and attraction towards Christ.

  36. And you just weren't maybe quite sure how to sort of close the deal or how to cross that threshold

  37. or how to turn the corner.

  38. And it's my privilege and honor to share with you the Christian story

  39. and then at the end of it just describe briefly how you turn that corner.

  40. And at the same time as I do this, I'm going to also be sharing for those of us who are Christians

  41. how it is that you share the gospel.

  42. You know, first of all, the thing we have to understand fundamentally is that there's only one evangelist.

  43. It's not Billy Graham.

  44. It's not the Pope.

  45. There's only one evangelist and it's God.

  46. God is the one whose Holy Spirit moves in lives and draws people to himself.

  47. And so the first thing I'd like to encourage each of you is those of you who have given your life to Christ,

  48. that you have a fundamental obligation to pray for people who have not yet come to faith in Jesus.

  49. Just pray for them.

  50. Maybe it's some cousins.

  51. Maybe it's some family members.

  52. Maybe it's your best friend.

  53. Maybe it's some of your people you work with.

  54. Or just God has put people in your path and he's calling you to pray for them

  55. that they will come to saving faith in Jesus Christ.

  56. And I would just like to encourage you that you do that.

  57. And then maybe one day after you've been praying for your best friend,

  58. maybe you go back home to work for four months

  59. and you've decided you're going to pray for your best friend

  60. and you're working with your best friend.

  61. And then one of the scariest things in the world happens

  62. three and a half months after you've been praying for them.

  63. One day during lunch they say,

  64. you're a Christian, eh?

  65. And you say, yeah, I'm a Christian.

  66. And they say, like, what's this Christian thing all about?

  67. And what would you have to do to become a Christian?

  68. And for many people that would be one of the scariest things that could happen.

  69. Somebody asked you that question

  70. and now you have to sort of give a bit of an answer.

  71. And, well, maybe what we'll do today will help you with that.

  72. If you could put the first thing up, Kendra.

  73. One of the things, this little model that I'm going to be sharing with you

  74. is something that was actually developed by an Anglican.

  75. He's now the Dean of the Cathedral in Sydney, Australia.

  76. And his name is Philip Jensen.

  77. And sometimes if you want to share the gospel with something,

  78. something that can be very helpful is if you have a pen with you

  79. and there's some napkins and stuff around,

  80. you can just draw a couple of simple little pictures

  81. which will help to communicate the story which you're telling.

  82. And if you're really, really, really, really, really on top of it,

  83. you can have some Bible verses that you've memorized

  84. because it's always helpful to be able to try to show people

  85. that it's not just you making this up,

  86. but it's ultimately God's Word.

  87. In your bulletins, there's an insert

  88. which gives you these different diagrams

  89. which Nat has kindly generated for me.

  90. So if you just have this little napkin,

  91. you just sort of write this big crown

  92. and a person standing there on the earth.

  93. And the Christian story begins with this,

  94. that God was originally, God is the one who's created all things.

  95. And when God created all things in the original creation,

  96. it was wonderful.

  97. God had his kingly rule and authority over the entire created order

  98. and the entire created order was completely and utterly at peace.

  99. Humans would have been in complete communion with God,

  100. perfect fellowship with God, closeness with God.

  101. The book of Genesis even describes it in the terms of a wonderful picture story

  102. that it would be as if every day God came from heaven and said,

  103. George, let's go for a walk.

  104. And it would be as if your very best friend,

  105. the best friend you could ever possibly imagine,

  106. just wanted to go for a little stroll with you

  107. in an absolutely beautiful setting

  108. and just chat about your day.

  109. And this picture from the book of Genesis describes what was the original intention in creation.

  110. The book of Revelation, which describes the final things,

  111. has this simple verse which describes what was originally intended.

  112. It's Revelation chapter 4, verse 11.

    Revelation 4:11

  113. And if you'd like to try to follow along as I started,

  114. we're going to look at one scripture verse with each of these pictures.

  115. And it's on page 1063 if you're using your pew Bibles.

  116. And it's Revelation chapter 4, verse 11.

    Revelation 4:11

  117. And here's angels are singing this hymn of praise.

  118. And they sing,

  119. See, so here you have, in a sense, the original picture that God has created all things.

  120. His kingly rule goes throughout all the created things.

  121. And there's just harmony and there's peace.

  122. And God is acknowledged as God.

  123. Well, if there's one thing we all know, beyond any shadow of a doubt,

  124. that that's not the way the world is today.

  125. Far from it.

  126. You just have to, you can't read the newspaper or listen to the news

  127. or even look at your own life in the mirror

  128. and know that that does not describe the way that the world is today.

  129. Kendra, if you could put up the second slide.

  130. The second picture shows what's happened to human beings.

  131. And one of the things which God created in us human beings is freedom, free will.

  132. And we human beings have used our free will to turn our back in God.

  133. And in fact, we've turned our back on God

  134. and we've decided that we're going to live as if God doesn't exist.

  135. And we want to be the rulers and the kings of our own lives.

  136. In a sense, we've said,

  137. God doesn't exist and I want his job.

  138. And that's the motto of human beings.

  139. God doesn't exist and I want his job.

  140. And so in this picture, we can see the big crown representing God.

  141. And before there was God and people over the earth.

  142. And now we have God crossed off.

  143. The earth is still there.

  144. And human beings are off to the side with their own little tiny crown.

  145. And we walk through this life being our own kings and our own rulers.

  146. And there's two Bible verses which talk about this.

  147. More than two, but these two sort of point you to it.

  148. The first one is a very hard verse and it's very hard for people to accept.

  149. But it's Romans chapter 3, verses 10 through 12.

    Romans 3:10–12

  150. If you want to use your pew Bibles, it's page 976.

  151. And Paul here is quoting from the Old Testament.

  152. And here's what it says.

  153. Page 976, Romans 3, verses 10 to 12.

    Romans 3:10–12

  154. As it is written,

  155. It's a very, very hard text.

  156. But it's trying to describe how human beings, there's every human being is like this.

  157. They've in a sense put a big X through God and his authority.

  158. And we've decided that we will have a crown that we put over our own heads.

  159. And we will walk around as if we are little gods.

  160. Just continue in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  161. Look at verse 23.

  162. And this sort of brings the matter home.

  163. Romans 3, 23.

  164. A simple verse, easy to memorize.

  165. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  166. Now, what's the consequence?

  167. Kendra, if you could put up the third one.

  168. What's the consequence of us using our freedom to turn our back on God?

  169. I'm no scientist.

  170. You all know that.

  171. I'm an arts guy.

  172. But if I was to have a table here as a demonstration,

  173. and I was to have six or seven or eight pieces of iron,

  174. and I was to pick up one of the pieces of iron and press it to another piece of iron,

  175. nothing would happen.

  176. If I picked up the piece that I'm holding, I pick it up, the iron just stays there.

  177. Iron doesn't connect to iron unless it's glued or welded or something.

  178. But if I was to take a very powerful magnet,

  179. and I was to reach down and put that magnet on a piece of iron,

  180. the magnet would pick up the piece of iron.

  181. And then, I know enough science to know this,

  182. that if I was to then take the magnet holding the iron,

  183. and I was to touch a second piece of iron,

  184. the magnetism flows through the magnet into the iron,

  185. and in fact, it can pick up a second piece of iron.

  186. Now, there's engineers here,

  187. and some of you folks, you could tell me,

  188. depending, I guess, on the quality of the iron

  189. and the power of the magnet,

  190. how many pieces of iron we could pick up.

  191. And every piece of iron would be picked up,

  192. all because that very first iron, piece of iron,

  193. is firmly connected to the magnet.

  194. And what Christians believe is this,

  195. that when we human beings turned our back on God

  196. and we decided to be our own kings and our own gods,

  197. that's what's called sin.

  198. It's called rebellion.

  199. It means that evil has entered into the world.

  200. And it's because of that that we have disunity,

  201. we have crime,

  202. that we, in a sense,

  203. are inwardly broken ourselves,

  204. and that we know within ourselves

  205. that things aren't just right within ourselves,

  206. and it's not right within the world,

  207. and it all flows,

  208. not because of God,

  209. but because we, as human beings,

  210. turned our backs on God

  211. and have decided to live on our own terms.

  212. And one of the consequences of that decision,

  213. beyond evil,

  214. is actually even the existence of death,

  215. because,

  216. and you imagine this piece of,

  217. you can imagine the magnet,

  218. you can imagine the iron,

  219. and if I was to take that first piece of iron

  220. and I was to pull it away from the magnet,

  221. what happens?

  222. All of the iron falls apart.

  223. And so that when we turned our back on God

  224. and then evil enters into the world

  225. and death follows from that,

  226. as our soul lost its communion with God,

  227. then all of the breaking,

  228. including ultimately the breaking of our body

  229. from our soul,

  230. which is death,

  231. that was to enter into the world,

  232. and death is a sign

  233. of our rebellion against God.

  234. And it's also a pointer

  235. to the possibility

  236. that we could spend,

  237. that that could be, in a sense,

  238. the final word about us,

  239. that on into eternity,

  240. that we would be,

  241. in a sense,

  242. under God's judgment,

  243. that brokenness and diminishment

  244. would be the final word about us

  245. under his judgment,

  246. that death would only be

  247. the beginning of the final word about us.

  248. Now, friends,

  249. if that was on one level,

  250. there is nothing more real about the world

  251. than what I've just described.

  252. If there's one thing

  253. that is incontrovertibly true,

  254. is that there is death,

  255. that death seems to rule,

  256. that there is sin,

  257. and that no matter what type of perfect system

  258. has been developed,

  259. it doesn't seem to deal with these fundamental conditions,

  260. and that there are no perfect people.

  261. And if all I was able to share with you,

  262. and even though I could show

  263. that it was empirically true,

  264. it would be the worst news in the world.

  265. But the Christian story

  266. is called the good news,

  267. not the bad news.

  268. It's the gospel,

  269. not depression.

  270. And the good news

  271. comes with this fourth slide,

  272. and that is,

  273. and by the way,

  274. in that earlier slide,

  275. we saw the little tiny crown

  276. over the person,

  277. and the person that was,

  278. the person was lying dead.

  279. That was what I was trying to describe.

  280. In the fourth picture here,

  281. we see God's plan.

  282. And in God's plan,

  283. he sends his son Jesus to earth.

  284. Throughout the years,

  285. God had sent different prophets

  286. to warn people

  287. to turn from their ways

  288. and to make a promise

  289. that someday one

  290. who would come from God

  291. who would be the mighty deliverer.

  292. And Christians believe

  293. that God had this plan

  294. to send this mighty deliverer.

  295. And this person, Jesus,

  296. was one who was able

  297. to perform mighty miracles.

  298. And he was able

  299. to talk of God

  300. in intimate terms.

  301. And he was able

  302. to clearly express

  303. what was right and wrong.

  304. And his teaching

  305. and his stories

  306. had great power.

  307. But ultimately,

  308. as we saw

  309. in the gospel text today,

  310. Jesus,

  311. and Jesus came,

  312. and he is the only person

  313. who's ever lived

  314. completely and utterly

  315. a perfect life.

  316. He lived under

  317. the kingly authority

  318. and rule of God.

  319. And he never sought

  320. his own tiny crown.

  321. He never sought

  322. to turn his back on God.

  323. But he lived

  324. a perfect life

  325. of obedience

  326. under God's kingly rule.

  327. And in that context,

  328. he performed miracles.

  329. He did many,

  330. many mighty things.

  331. And yet,

  332. the very same man

  333. who could walk on water,

  334. who could feed thousands

  335. from a few loaves of bread,

  336. the very, very same man

  337. who could speak a word

  338. and call a dead man

  339. back to life,

  340. the very, very same man

  341. who could do all

  342. of these things,

  343. he died.

  344. And we Christians believe

  345. that Jesus didn't die

  346. because of anything

  347. that he had done

  348. that was wrong.

  349. It wasn't because,

  350. you know,

  351. he was doing really,

  352. really good,

  353. and then one day

  354. he just sort of slipped up

  355. and powerful people

  356. were sort of able

  357. to jump on him

  358. and overwhelm him.

  359. We Christians believe

  360. that Jesus,

  361. out of obedience to God

  362. and out of love

  363. for you and me,

  364. that he came to this earth

  365. not only to live

  366. a perfect life

  367. and not only to perform

  368. those miracles

  369. and not only to give

  370. mighty teachings,

  371. but he came to die.

  372. He came to die

  373. upon the cross

  374. as our substitute.

  375. Some of you have heard

  376. this story before

  377. of a time in my life

  378. when substitution

  379. was made very real.

  380. It was the story of,

  381. I was in grade eight,

  382. and I was supposed to have

  383. done a French speech,

  384. and it was time

  385. to give our presentations,

  386. and I was completely,

  387. utterly unprepared,

  388. and I am terrible at French,

  389. was then and worse now,

  390. and one day the teacher said,

  391. well, before we're going

  392. to give these French speeches,

  393. it wouldn't be fair

  394. to go alphabetical

  395. or reverse alphabetical order

  396. like I do every other week.

  397. There's 32 kids in the class.

  398. I'm going to put,

  399. I've put 32 pieces of paper

  400. in a hat,

  401. and each piece of paper

  402. has number one

  403. and number two,

  404. number three,

  405. 32 pieces,

  406. each with a different number

  407. from one to 32.

  408. We'll pass the hat,

  409. and as you take

  410. a number out of the hat,

  411. that will be your order,

  412. and she said,

  413. is that a fair thing to do,

  414. and everybody in the class,

  415. including me,

  416. said that's completely,

  417. and utterly fair,

  418. and you know,

  419. I'm like those

  420. that watch that show,

  421. Deal, No Deal,

  422. and you're like,

  423. I'm thinking,

  424. what are the odds

  425. of something really bad

  426. happening, you know?

  427. Four kids a day,

  428. I have only one odd in eight

  429. that I'm going to have

  430. to do anything today.

  431. I can, you know,

  432. I was completely,

  433. utterly uncomfortable,

  434. and as the hat came to me,

  435. and I took the number

  436. out of the hat

  437. to my horror,

  438. I had number one,

  439. and I had been really carefree

  440. and smiling and laughing,

  441. but now I knew

  442. that my doom was upon me

  443. and that there was

  444. absolutely nothing

  445. that I was going

  446. to be able to do

  447. because I was unprepared

  448. and unskilled at French,

  449. and I had been presumptuous,

  450. just assuming that I had

  451. one or two more nights

  452. to work on this thing,

  453. I had done nothing.

  454. And so the teacher says

  455. with a nice, bright,

  456. you know, teacherly type of,

  457. like as if we're doing

  458. something really fun

  459. and exciting,

  460. okay, who's next?

  461. Who's number one?

  462. And I had to put my hand up

  463. and I said,

  464. I am number one.

  465. And she said very brightly

  466. and enthusiastically

  467. like good teachers are,

  468. well, George,

  469. you come on up to the class

  470. and give us your speech.

  471. And I had to say,

  472. I can't do my speech.

  473. I have not done anything

  474. to prepare.

  475. I can't do it.

  476. And she said,

  477. George, just come up

  478. and at least try.

  479. And I say,

  480. I can't even try.

  481. And I am just,

  482. I was completely

  483. and utterly flummoxed

  484. and defeated by this.

  485. And so the teacher said,

  486. well, George,

  487. we all agreed

  488. that this is the fair way to go.

  489. You agreed that this

  490. was the fair way to go.

  491. And I have to either

  492. give you zero

  493. unless there's somebody

  494. in the room

  495. who would be willing

  496. to trade their number

  497. with your number.

  498. And they took number one.

  499. And she said,

  500. is there anybody

  501. in the class like this?

  502. And Ricky,

  503. of blessed memory,

  504. who had number 16,

  505. said,

  506. I am willing

  507. to come

  508. and give George

  509. my number 16

  510. and he can take my number.

  511. I will give him

  512. my number 16

  513. and I will take

  514. his number one.

  515. And he walked

  516. across the class

  517. and dropped 16

  518. on my desk.

  519. And he went up

  520. to the front

  521. and he did the speech.

  522. He was my substitute.

  523. He traded places with me.

  524. And the wonderful good news

  525. of the gospel

  526. is the gospel

  527. doesn't deny

  528. that there is evil.

  529. It doesn't deny

  530. that there is death.

  531. In fact,

  532. it says that we human beings

  533. should wake up

  534. to the reality of death

  535. and the reality of evil

  536. and the impossibility

  537. for us to lift ourselves

  538. up by our bootstraps

  539. or impossibility

  540. of changing ourselves

  541. and we should understand

  542. that what this points to

  543. is that we need a savior.

  544. And at the heart

  545. of that saving work,

  546. there has to be substitution.

  547. We don't need

  548. another example.

  549. Like how many of us

  550. need to see another

  551. unbelievably fit person

  552. telling us how we can

  553. lose weight

  554. and look like them?

  555. Like we don't need

  556. another example,

  557. you know?

  558. And on top of that,

  559. they're just fantastically perfect.

  560. They can cook.

  561. They can fix things.

  562. They never do anything wrong.

  563. We don't need another example.

  564. We need a savior

  565. who is a substitute.

  566. And Christians believe

  567. that Jesus came,

  568. lived perfectly under

  569. God's kingly rule

  570. and authority.

  571. and never broke

  572. fellowship with God

  573. and that Jesus came

  574. not only to do that

  575. but more importantly

  576. that he came

  577. to die upon the cross

  578. and that he came

  579. and in his death

  580. he says to George

  581. and he says to each one of us,

  582. he says,

  583. I am willing

  584. to trade places with you

  585. and I will take your place

  586. and suffer the consequences

  587. of all your actions

  588. and all your rebellion

  589. and you can take my place

  590. of unbroken fellowship

  591. with God.

  592. It's what the Bible teaches.

  593. Turn in your Bibles

  594. to 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  595. chapter 5

  596. verse 21.

  597. 2 Corinthians 5

  598. and it's on page

  599. 990

  600. sorry,

  601. it's 1 Corinthians

  602. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5:21

  603. 5

  604. verse 21

  605. and it's on page

  606. 1002

  607. the very last verse.

  608. 2 Corinthians 5

  609. 521

  610. on page 1002

  611. for God made him

  612. that's Jesus

  613. who knew

  614. no sin

  615. to be

  616. sin

  617. for us

  618. in other words

  619. to trade places

  620. with us

  621. that we might become

  622. the righteousness

  623. of God

  624. in him.

  625. It's this

  626. wonderful news

  627. of

  628. of

  629. of

  630. of exchange

  631. of substitution.

  632. Please put up

  633. the next slide.

  634. And

  635. and

  636. and the good news

  637. continues.

  638. You see,

  639. we Christians

  640. believe that

  641. not only did

  642. Jesus die

  643. upon the cross

  644. and taste

  645. all there is

  646. and and die

  647. in a sense

  648. bearing my

  649. punishment

  650. and my sin

  651. that it wasn't

  652. an accident.

  653. It wasn't as if

  654. the bad Romans

  655. or the bad

  656. religious people

  657. somehow were able

  658. to overwhelm

  659. Jesus

  660. but Jesus

  661. willingly

  662. entered into

  663. this

  664. out of love

  665. for you and me

  666. willing to be

  667. our substitute

  668. willing to trade

  669. places with us

  670. and Jesus

  671. after tasting

  672. everything there is

  673. to taste of death

  674. with nothing

  675. left over

  676. on the third

  677. day

  678. he emerged

  679. on the far

  680. side of death

  681. because he had

  682. never sinned

  683. death could

  684. ultimately not

  685. hold him

  686. or swallow him

  687. and on the

  688. third day

  689. he arose

  690. he arrived

  691. or rose

  692. on the far

  693. side of death

  694. having defeated

  695. sin

  696. having defeated

  697. death

  698. which is a sign

  699. of sin

  700. and we also

  701. believe all

  702. hostile spiritual

  703. powers

  704. anything

  705. which separates

  706. us from God

  707. is defeated

  708. by the person

  709. of Jesus

  710. and he rose

  711. from the dead

  712. and he sits

  713. at God's

  714. right hand

  715. it's why

  716. you see

  717. we don't talk

  718. about him

  719. as an historical

  720. person

  721. we don't talk

  722. about him

  723. like we might

  724. have talked

  725. about Napoleon

  726. or we might

  727. even talk

  728. about a holy

  729. person

  730. like Augustine

  731. or Saint

  732. Teresa

  733. of Avila

  734. we don't talk

  735. about God

  736. as Jesus

  737. as if he's

  738. in the past

  739. we know

  740. that he's

  741. alive

  742. and Jesus

  743. invites us

  744. to share

  745. in his triumph

  746. he invites us

  747. to share

  748. in his triumph

  749. and he can

  750. hear us

  751. when we speak

  752. and we Christians

  753. believe

  754. that one day

  755. he will return

  756. and the work

  757. of salvation

  758. which he had

  759. begun

  760. by allowing

  761. our souls

  762. to be reconnected

  763. to God

  764. and yet we still

  765. see things

  766. which aren't

  767. right in the world

  768. and the work

  769. of salvation

  770. which he has

  771. begun

  772. by allowing

  773. our souls

  774. to be connected

  775. to God

  776. that God

  777. himself

  778. through the

  779. Holy Spirit

  780. would actually

  781. make his

  782. home

  783. within

  784. mortals

  785. like you

  786. and me

  787. that one day

  788. Jesus will

  789. return

  790. and fix

  791. the entire

  792. created order

  793. and in the meantime

  794. he invites us

  795. to share

  796. in his triumph

  797. and learn

  798. to live

  799. under

  800. the kingly

  801. rule of God

  802. not now

  803. purely from

  804. our own

  805. strength

  806. but with

  807. God himself

  808. the Holy Spirit

  809. actually living

  810. in us

  811. let's look

  812. at a passage

  813. of scripture

  814. which talks

  815. about this

  816. and it's

  817. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  818. 9

  819. Hebrews chapter

    Hebrews 9 chapter mention

  820. 9

  821. and verses

  822. the sort of

  823. the second half

  824. of 26

  825. right up

  826. till the end

  827. of the chapter

  828. just two and a half

  829. verses

  830. page 1040

  831. and

  832. Hebrews

  833. 9

  834. 26

  835. B

  836. so to speak

  837. and so it's

  838. beginning at the

  839. third line

  840. which says this

  841. but now

  842. once

  843. at the end

  844. of the ages

  845. Jesus has

  846. appeared

  847. to put away

  848. sin

  849. by the

  850. sacrifice

  851. of himself

  852. and as it is

  853. appointed for men

  854. to die once

  855. but after this

  856. the judgment

  857. so Christ

  858. was offered

  859. once

  860. to bear

  861. the sins

  862. of many

  863. to those

  864. who eagerly

  865. wait for him

  866. he will appear

  867. a second time

  868. apart from sin

  869. for salvation

  870. Kendra if you could

  871. put up the

  872. final one

  873. so friends

  874. today we have

  875. a choice

  876. before us

  877. and this is

  878. illustrated by

  879. these two

  880. dot

  881. dot

  882. drawings

  883. on

  884. my

  885. right

  886. on the

  887. left hand

  888. side

  889. as you

  890. look at

  891. this

  892. you see

  893. the state

  894. of human

  895. beings

  896. apart from

  897. Christ

  898. and a little

  899. tiny crown

  900. over our

  901. heads

  902. and we go

  903. through life

  904. and we go

  905. through world

  906. saying

  907. we're

  908. going to

  909. live as if

  910. God does

  911. not exist

  912. and I

  913. want his

  914. job

  915. and on

  916. the right

  917. hand

  918. side

  919. is the

  920. person

  921. who has

  922. made the

  923. choice

  924. to leave

  925. the left

  926. hand side

  927. and move

  928. to the

  929. right

  930. hand

  931. side

  932. to live

  933. under the

  934. kingly

  935. rule

  936. of Jesus

  937. trusting

  938. Jesus

  939. as

  940. savior

  941. and learning

  942. to allow

  943. him to be

  944. the Lord

  945. and the

  946. gospel message

  947. is that no

  948. matter what

  949. your state

  950. of affairs

  951. is on the

  952. left hand

  953. Jesus will

  954. never cast

  955. you out

  956. and it

  957. is

  958. it would

  959. make

  960. God

  961. I mean

  962. the Bible

  963. says that

  964. the angels

  965. throw a

  966. party in

  967. heaven

  968. when any

  969. person

  970. decides to

  971. move from

  972. the left

  973. hand side

  974. there to

  975. the right

  976. and you

  977. know what

  978. there is no

  979. better time

  980. than today

  981. to listen

  982. to the

  983. words and

  984. heed the

  985. words of

  986. John 3

  987. 16

  988. for God

  989. so loved

  990. the world

  991. that he

  992. gave his

  993. one and

  994. only son

  995. to the end

  996. that all

  997. that believe

  998. in him

  999. shall not

  1000. perish

  1001. but have

  1002. eternal

  1003. life

  1004. there is no

  1005. better time

  1006. than right

  1007. now

  1008. to move

  1009. from the

  1010. left side

  1011. to the

  1012. right side

  1013. and how

  1014. do you

  1015. do that

  1016. remember I

  1017. said to

  1018. you earlier

  1019. on that

  1020. my life

  1021. was different

  1022. at 3

  1023. 55 p.m.

  1024. the 15th

  1025. of May

  1026. 1981

  1027. than it

  1028. was at

  1029. 4 0 5

  1030. p.m.

  1031. May 15

  1032. 1981

  1033. and the

  1034. difference

  1035. was five

  1036. simple words

  1037. which I

  1038. said to

  1039. my wife

  1040. Louise

  1041. will you

  1042. marry

  1043. me

  1044. and

  1045. sometimes

  1046. a few

  1047. words make

  1048. all the

  1049. difference

  1050. in the

  1051. world

  1052. and

  1053. it

  1054. you know

  1055. it's

  1056. it's

  1057. as if

  1058. right now

  1059. God

  1060. through his

  1061. son Jesus

  1062. Christ

  1063. is standing

  1064. at the

  1065. at the

  1066. very very

  1067. in a sense

  1068. he's standing

  1069. in front

  1070. of you

  1071. and he's

  1072. knocking

  1073. on the

  1074. door to

  1075. your heart

  1076. and the

  1077. door to

  1078. your life

  1079. and he's

  1080. saying

  1081. you know

  1082. I would

  1083. like to

  1084. come in

  1085. and make

  1086. this offer

  1087. of being

  1088. your substitute

  1089. of being

  1090. your savior

  1091. I would

  1092. like you

  1093. to enter

  1094. into my

  1095. triumph

  1096. and Jesus

  1097. stands

  1098. and he

  1099. knocks

  1100. and he

  1101. knocks

  1102. and he

  1103. knocks

  1104. and it's

  1105. up to

  1106. us to

  1107. open the

  1108. door and

  1109. allow him

  1110. to come

  1111. in

  1112. and the

  1113. way we

  1114. open the

  1115. door of

  1116. our hearts

  1117. and allow

  1118. him to

  1119. come in

  1120. is to

  1121. say a

  1122. simple

  1123. prayer to

  1124. God

  1125. that involves

  1126. three very

  1127. very simple

  1128. concepts which

  1129. we're all

  1130. familiar with

  1131. sorry

  1132. thank you

  1133. and please

  1134. anybody who

  1135. understand

  1136. anybody who

  1137. has all

  1138. of the

  1139. power that

  1140. they need

  1141. to ask

  1142. Jesus

  1143. to move

  1144. from the

  1145. left to

  1146. the right

  1147. hand side

  1148. of that

  1149. picture

  1150. and so

  1151. there's no

  1152. better time

  1153. than today

  1154. to say to

  1155. God something

  1156. like this

  1157. father I am

  1158. sorry that I

  1159. have been

  1160. living my

  1161. life as if

  1162. I am my

  1163. own God

  1164. or father I

  1165. am sorry that

  1166. I have been

  1167. living my

  1168. life apart

  1169. from you

  1170. and then

  1171. to say to

  1172. him

  1173. father thank

  1174. you that

  1175. you had a

  1176. plan that

  1177. could save

  1178. me thank

  1179. you that

  1180. you sent

  1181. your son

  1182. Jesus to

  1183. be my

  1184. savior and

  1185. then say

  1186. please Jesus

  1187. come into

  1188. my life and

  1189. be my

  1190. savior make

  1191. your home

  1192. within me and

  1193. help me to

  1194. learn to

  1195. live under

  1196. your authority

  1197. to say

  1198. sorry thank

  1199. you and

  1200. please

  1201. very few

  1202. words it

  1203. can be your

  1204. own words your

  1205. own way of

  1206. saying sorry

  1207. your own way

  1208. of saying thank

  1209. you your own

  1210. way of saying

  1211. please but I

  1212. can tell you

  1213. right now that

  1214. no one who

  1215. says that to

  1216. God will he

  1217. say no to

  1218. you and there

  1219. is no better

  1220. time than right

  1221. now to do

  1222. that could you

  1223. please stand

  1224. there's nothing

  1225. magic I'm

  1226. going to I'm

  1227. going to move

  1228. over to the

  1229. side here

  1230. there's there's

  1231. nothing magic

  1232. about leaving

  1233. your pew and

  1234. there's nothing

  1235. like this I

  1236. just know that

  1237. sometimes it's

  1238. really helpful for

  1239. people maybe

  1240. you're not sure

  1241. whether you've

  1242. ever done this

  1243. before maybe

  1244. you just really

  1245. feel compelled

  1246. in your heart

  1247. that you would

  1248. like to have

  1249. some public

  1250. way of acknowledging

  1251. that you would

  1252. like to now

  1253. come to Christ

  1254. and I'm going

  1255. to allow a few

  1256. seconds and

  1257. if you would

  1258. like to pray

  1259. that prayer I

  1260. invite you to

  1261. come up to the

  1262. front and I'm

  1263. not going to do

  1264. anything to

  1265. embarrass you other

  1266. than the fact that

  1267. I invite you to

  1268. come to the

  1269. front and I

  1270. will say the

  1271. prayer slowly and

  1272. you are free to

  1273. repeat the words

  1274. after me and

  1275. there's no better

  1276. time than today

  1277. to give your

  1278. life to Christ

  1279. and so I'm

  1280. just going to

  1281. have a few

  1282. moments of

  1283. silence if

  1284. you'd like to

  1285. come forward

  1286. you can

  1287. if you're not

  1288. sure if you

  1289. can come

  1290. forward you're

  1291. free to remain

  1292. in your seats

  1293. and say the

  1294. prayer from

  1295. there but it

  1296. can be very

  1297. powerful to

  1298. come forward

  1299. lid

  1300. hij

1301. Wherever you're standing, if this is the prayer of your heart,

1302. just repeat silently the words after me.

1303. He said, you can use your own words, but if you're not sure about your own words,

1304. you can just borrow mine and make them your own.

1305. Father, I am sorry that I have lived apart from you,

1306. turned my back on you.

1307. Thank you, Father, that you love me.

1308. Thank you for sending Jesus.

1309. Thank you for sending a Savior.

1310. Please, Jesus, come to me.

  1311. Come into my life.

  1312. Be my Savior.

  1313. Be my Lord.

1314. Thank you that you will never leave.

1315. Pour your Holy Spirit upon me today.

  1316. In Jesus' name, amen.

1317. Father, I thank you for the gift of your Son and the working of your Holy Spirit.

1318. May your Holy Spirit fall afresh upon each of us.

1319. Those of us who have given our lives to Christ,

1320. may your Holy Spirit fall afresh upon us and draw us ever closer to yourself.

1321. And those fathers still seeking after you,

1322. may your Holy Spirit move and work within them to draw them closer to yourself.

1323. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1324. Amen.

  1325. Amen.

  1326. Amen.

  1327. Amen.

  1328. Amen.

  1329. Amen.
