  1. I'm in trouble.

  2. I need help.

  3. About three days ago, one of my kids walked by me

  4. and there was an odor emanating from their body.

  5. And as any father would say, I said what I would normally say,

  6. dude, you stink.

  7. Go take a bath.

  8. To which my wife responded to me and said,

  9. you know, that's not very encouraging.

  10. Think of a more encouraging way to say it.

  11. And the only thing I can say is, take a bath.

  12. This morning I woke up, and I wake up fairly early on Sundays,

  13. and I was going out into the hallway,

  14. and my youngest child walked out and had her arms open wide

  15. and said, Dad, good morning.

  16. I've worn these clothes for three days straight,

  17. and I've slept in them every day.

  18. What do I say?

  19. I said, oh, that's great.

  20. Get dressed for church today.

  21. You know, sometimes in parenting, I just don't know what to do.

  22. In some ways, my family was a little dysfunctional.

  23. We weren't churchgoers per se.

  24. And so when I try to reflect back today to then,

  25. I don't get a lot of input of what I need to be doing.

  26. Sundays was not a church day.

  27. We worshiped ourselves.

  28. Ourselves was God.

  29. In my family's life, we didn't believe in God.

  30. And so Sundays was the day that we slept in.

  31. We went at 5 o'clock.

  32. We went to this fried chicken place.

  33. I don't know why it was always fried chicken,

  34. but it was Pinson's fried chicken.

  35. We ate fried chicken.

  36. And then we caught up on homework.

  37. At 6 o'clock every night, we watched the wonderful world of Disney

  38. and watched the latest Disney, Huckleberry Finn,

  39. or something going down the raft.

  40. And then we took a bath.

  41. Whether we wanted to or liked it or not,

  42. we always took a bath.

  43. I don't know what it is because I hated taking baths.

  44. I mean, I just, I hated taking baths.

  45. And I hated being clean as a kid.

  46. And after the baths, my mom would literally line us up

  47. because we were a military family.

  48. You know, my dad was a pilot.

  49. And we were just kind of like, I don't know,

  50. sound of music or something like that.

  51. We were in a line.

  52. We had this inspection.

  53. So we stuck our hands out.

  54. My mom checked our fingernails and everything.

  55. Then my mom checked behind our ears.

  56. My mom always said the same thing.

  57. Did you use soap?

  58. And then she said, were there bubbles in the tub?

  59. Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles.

  60. A lot of bubbles.

  61. Because for some reason, my mom just thought bubbles meant being clean.

  62. And if there weren't bubbles in the tub,

  63. then you just weren't clean at all.

  64. And so she would ask those same questions.

  65. And usually we got sent back into the house

  66. and we had to, or into the tub,

  67. and we'd have to add more bubbles and get more soap and get clean again.

  68. And I just hated it.

  69. And I realize now growing up that probably every kid from the age of 1 to 16 hates,

  70. they hate being clean.

  71. And I find myself asking my kids the same questions that my parents ask me.

  72. It's kind of like, you know, your parents say,

  73. one day you're going to get a kid just like you are.

  74. And then you're going to see.

  75. And that happens sometimes.

  76. Sometimes God gives us kids just like we are.

  77. And so God gave me four kids just like I am.

  78. And sometimes I check their fingernails and I check the back of their ears.

  79. And the worst thing is when you check the belly button, right?

  80. Because that's really humiliating, right?

  81. Because you don't know what's growing down there at all.

  82. And then I asked the question, did you use soap yet?

  83. And were there a lot of bubbles?

  84. Bubbles, bubbles, bubbles.

  85. Were there a lot of bubbles in the tub?

  86. Yeah, okay, so you're clean.

  87. And last week I had this conversation with one of my kids.

  88. And I got to be very careful because three of the four are sitting here,

  89. which I didn't know was going to happen,

  90. which is the terrible thing about being a pastor, right?

  91. Because your best illustrations are at home,

  92. but you can't necessarily always use them.

  93. But the kid looked at me and they were not very clean

  94. because they had taken a bath two days ago

  95. and they had played a lot of basketball.

  96. And I said, do you, I said, all three of the kids play basketball, okay?

  97. So you're not going to figure out who they are.

  98. And I said, do you, you need to go get clean.

  99. He goes, Dad, I'm clean.

  100. I'm clean enough.

  101. I mean, your standard for cleanliness is different than my standard for cleanliness.

  102. I mean, everybody has different standards for cleanliness.

  103. And my standard is good for me and I'm clean enough.

  104. And I thought about that a lot.

  105. But what does it mean to have standards of cleanliness?

  106. What does it mean to be clean?

  107. What does it mean to be right?

  108. What does it mean to be good?

  109. And I did some research.

  110. And, you know, there are whole organizations and departments in the U.S. government

  111. that deal with these ideas of cleanliness

  112. and what is clean and what is good and what is right.

  113. And so I did some research.

  114. And so hopefully you didn't eat too much before you came here today.

  115. But I did some research just to figure out what these standards are

  116. and do we really have just many multiple standards or do we just have one standard?

  117. The organization that I watched was the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

  118. And you can go on their website.

  119. It's pretty amazing.

  120. It probably will freak you out.

  121. You probably don't want to go on their website.

  122. But you can go on their website and check out cleanliness standards for food.

  123. I dare you.

  124. Okay?

  125. So I did that.

  126. And I did it again.

  127. So I was looking through this again.

  128. I did it again.

  129. I just couldn't believe it.

  130. And so I want to read some of these standards for you

  131. just so that we can figure out what is the standard for cleanliness?

  132. What is the standard for being right?

  133. What is the standard for being good?

  134. And the U.S. FDA, that's a long thing, it says this.

  135. In selling food to the public, okay, so this, I couldn't find a 100-gram container.

  136. So this is a 200-gram container, okay?

  137. So we're just going to use this as the illustration here.

  138. So it's this 200-gram container.

  139. It says, when selling food to the public, butter passes inspection

  140. if it has four or less rat hairs per 100 grams.

  141. So this thing right here has 200 grams.

  142. So the only reason I'm holding this is because it passed inspection

  143. because it only has eight rat hairs in it, okay?

  144. So it has eight rat hairs per 100 grams.

  145. Or if it has five or less whole insects in it.

  146. If it's five or less whole insects in it, then the FDA says it's good.

  147. If there's more than five, bad.

  148. More than four rat hairs, bad.

  149. But if it's less than four or four or five or less whole insects.

  150. So in here, that means there's at least ten whole insects or eight rat hairs.

  151. And the only reason I can handle this is because there's eight rat hairs.

  152. And they sold it to me.

  153. So I'm going to go home today and spread rat hair on my butter, my bread today.

  154. Applesauce, which if you're a German family, man, I grew up, we just ate applesauce every meal.

  155. I had something about Germans and applesauce.

  156. Applesauce passes inspection if there are 15 or less insect heads per 100 grams.

  157. And so if this is applesauce, this is actually cranberry sauce, which I'm addicted to cranberry sauce.

  158. But if this was applesauce, the only reason I'm holding this is because it had 15 or less insect heads per 100 grams.

  159. So there's 200 grams here.

  160. That means there's at least 30 insect heads in here.

  161. The question I had to ask myself is, what is it about heads?

  162. What about the rest of the parts?

  163. It doesn't say anything about the rest of the parts.

  164. It just says heads, which I wonder.

  165. So the only reason I'm holding this 200-gram jar is because there are 30 or less insect heads in it.

  166. Coffee beans.

  167. I don't know if you drink coffee today.

  168. I walk by the Starbucks out there, and there's this sign there that says, brewing with excellence in care.

  169. And so coffee beans, according to the FDA, they only fail inspection if 10% or more of the beans are insect infected.

  170. So if 9% of the beans are insect infected, they sell it, and you make coffee today.

  171. So what that sign should really say out there is brewing coffee with excellence in character in beans infected by less than 9%.

  172. Because that's the truth.

  173. That's the standard of cleanliness.

  174. Peanut butter.

  175. Okay, so every morning I just put a big slab of peanut butter on, and I just slap it on the bread, and it's my life.

  176. Peanut butter is okay as long as it contains less than 30 insect parts per 100 grams.

  177. So there's 100 grams in here.

  178. So this morning I ate 30 insects, or at least their parts.

  179. And according to the FDA, I am clean, I'm good, I'm good to go, and it's all great.

  180. I probably should stop here, shouldn't I?

  181. I mean, I thought about doing it with the Hong Kong government and all the standards and things like that,

  182. but I figured maybe that would be taking it too far.

  183. But what I've seen in my conversations with my kids and what I've seen in my conversations with the Internet over the FDA

  184. is that cleanliness and rightness and what is just and what is good is dependent upon the person.

  185. And it's not just about food, but what we see, if we're honest, that it's also about our words.

  186. In our minds.

  187. In our actions.

  188. In our sexuality.

  189. In our relationships.

  190. In our hearts.

  191. All these things, we determine what is clean, what is right, what is good in and of ourselves.

  192. In our hearts.

  193. And the passage says that we play games with ourselves.

  194. I play games with myself.

  195. I mean, I try to convince myself that I'm okay, that I'm really clean, I'm not that bad off.

  196. I only have 10 bug heads per 100 grams.

  197. Or at least I'm not as bad as that person.

  198. Because that person is really, really bad.

  199. I'm not as bad as they are.

  200. And so if I get to heaven, and if there's a God, because if there is a God, then surely I'm going to get to heaven because I'm good.

  201. God's just going to look at my life, and he's going to take my life through a little sieve.

  202. And he's going to sieve out, or he's going to audit my life, or whatever profession you're in, he's going to audit it, or he's going to inspect it, or he's going to, the scripture says, he's going to judge it.

  203. He's going to sieve it.

  204. But he's going to sieve through my life, and he's going to find some junk there, but it's not going to be as bad as other people.

  205. And God's going to say, Tobin, you're great.

  206. Come on in.

  207. Come on through.

  208. I remember I was teaching in China in 1991.

  209. And we're doing Christmas, and we're talking about the Bible and scripture.

  210. And one of my students did a very daring thing.

  211. I think that he was trying to trick me.

  212. He said to me, will Mao be in heaven?

  213. And I just, you know, I was like, whoa, what's, you know, who's listening, and what's going on, and what kind of party members are your parents?

  214. And so being the good, evasive Christian that I am, I said, I don't know, what do you guys think?

  215. And there was a lot of silence there.

  216. And finally, one girl stood up, and she goes, I think he will, because Chairman Mao was 51% good.

  217. Did you hear that?

  218. He will, because Chairman Mao is 51% good, and 51% is good enough.

  219. And I've thought about that a long time.

  220. What is good enough?

  221. What is right?

  222. What is pure?

  223. What is holy?

  224. We're looking in the book of Romans.

  225. We've gone through one chapter in two weeks.

  226. So far, I think we have a slide for it on our screen.

  227. So far, we have learned.

  228. Now, whether we accept it or not, that's another thing between you and God.

  229. But what we've learned, we've learned about Paul.

  230. His name was Saul.

  231. He was a Jew.

  232. He was one of the most brilliant minds in the Old, New Testament time.

  233. He was trained by the greatest teacher of the day, Gamaliel, in Hebrew Scripture.

  234. He was a mover, and he was a shaker.

  235. And on this road, as he was persecuting Christians, he met Jesus, the resurrected Jesus.

  236. And he realized that he was doing the wrong thing, and he came to Christ.

  237. He became a Christian.

  238. We've learned about the gospel, and we said the gospel is just the good news.

  239. The good news is that God saves dead, lost people.

  240. We've learned that righteousness, righteousness means to be put into right standing.

  241. It is both a legal and a relational term.

  242. We learned, now again, whether we believe it or not,

  243. we learned through Scripture that God created us.

  244. He created us to worship and to serve him.

  245. He created us to live unselfish lives.

  246. He created us to live an amazing life with him.

  247. We learned last week through Graham that sin entered into creation,

  248. and sin entered into us.

  249. And we learned that sin disorders our worship.

  250. Chapter 1, verse 22 and 23,

  251. they went from worshiping God, the creator, to worshiping the worm,

  252. they went from worshiping God to the worm.

  253. They had this slide, and so sin disordered our worship.

  254. We learned that sin disorders our beliefs and our thinking.

  255. Chapter 1, verse 21,

  256. although they knew God, they did not give him honor or presence or thank him as God,

  257. and their foolish minds were darkened.

  258. We learned that sin disorders our desires and our actions.

  259. We've had a lot of questions about that this week.

  260. People were, whoa, when they looked at chapter 1, verses 22 through 29.

  261. But the Bible says that sin comes in and it changes us.

  262. It causes us to treat people poorly.

  263. It causes us to do things that God had not designed.

  264. We also learned that sin, when it does all these things,

  265. it causes disorder, and this disorder angers our righteous God.

  266. We talked about wrath, however you want to say it.

  267. I noticed he only said it once correctly.

  268. The rest of the times he said he digressed.

  269. But we talked about how this disorder angers our righteous God.

  270. So today I want to look at chapter 2 really briefly.

  271. There's so much here that God wants to teach us.

  272. There's so much things.

  273. Please promise me that you'll go back and read chapter 2, verses 1 through 16.

  274. It will take you about three minutes today.

  275. You have it in the little books that we made for you, the Romans book.

  276. You need to pick one up on the way out.

  277. Because I think there's some things that God wants to teach us today.

  278. There's some things that God wants to teach us about rightness.

  279. He wants to teach us about cleanliness.

  280. He wants to teach us about what does it mean to be clean,

  281. and how many bugs can we have in our life,

  282. and what does it mean to have bugs,

  283. and what does it mean to not have bugs.

  284. And the first thing I think he wants to teach us is found in verses 1 through 3.

  285. Therefore you have no excuse.

  286. Every one of you passes judgment.

  287. For then that you judge another, you condemn yourselves.

  288. For you who judge practice the same things.

  289. And don't you know the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practice such things?

  290. Do you suppose this, O man,

  291. that you pass judgment on those who practice such things,

  292. and you do the same yourself, you escape the judgment?

  293. The first thing we learn in verses 1 through 4

  294. is that it's really easy for you and I to recognize and to judge

  295. and to see selfishness and sin and brokenness in other people's lives,

  296. but it's very, very, very, very, very difficult for us to see it in our lives.

  297. It's very, very difficult for us to call it what it is in our lives.

  298. I mean, we see it in other people's lives,

  299. but we don't see it in our lives

  300. because the Bible says that we're blinded.

  301. We're blinded to our blindness.

  302. I mean, think about it.

  303. I went to a party last night with some great friends.

  304. We've been trying to hang out with them for a while,

  305. and whenever I walk in, I just have this bullseye painted on my chest,

  306. and they go, oh, the vicar's here.

  307. And so I'm the vicar, and I'm the priest,

  308. and I walk in there, and everybody comes,

  309. and we talk about life, and I hear these conversations,

  310. and as I hear them, I think about myself.

  311. This has been an incredibly convicting sermon for me.

  312. Incredibly convicting.

  313. Because I realize that almost in every, not almost,

  314. God has something to teach me in this passage.

  315. When they break their promise,

  316. when they tell things that are not true,

  317. we call them liars.

  318. But when we do it, we just say that we've exaggerated a little

  319. because we want to do it for effect.

  320. When they are abusive to their kids,

  321. we go, wow, but when we do it,

  322. we just say that we're disciplining our kids

  323. according to the proper way at the proper time.

  324. When they do it, they spread rumors.

  325. They spread gossip.

  326. They hurt people with their words.

  327. It's an arrow that flies out there and stabs them,

  328. and you can't take it away.

  329. But when I do it, it's just a prayer request.

  330. Or I'm asking about somebody because I'm really concerned,

  331. and I really want to know.

  332. I mean, they're cheaters,

  333. and they're unethical.

  334. But when I do it,

  335. I just bend the rules a little.

  336. Because the rules are not really black and white,

  337. especially in certain areas of my work.

  338. I mean, sometimes it's different.

  339. I mean, when they see them yell,

  340. I say they have a mean spirit.

  341. They're angry.

  342. But when I do it,

  343. you know, I'm really tired.

  344. And I'm sick.

  345. And I haven't eaten yet.

  346. I look at them,

  347. and I say they're insensitive

  348. and aggressive.

  349. But when I do it,

  350. I'm real,

  351. and I'm honest,

  352. and I speak bluntly.

  353. I don't miss people.

  354. I'm goal-oriented.

  355. She, she's sleeping her way through the office

  356. and trying to work her way all the way up to the top.

  357. But me, I just want to have sex before I date

  358. just to make sure that the date,

  359. the sex is good.

  360. We see people differently.

  361. They get angry,

  362. and they lose their temper,

  363. and I just have just anger

  364. because my anger deserves to be angry

  365. because I deserve to be angry

  366. because that person really pissed me off,

  367. and I deserve it.

  368. I deserve it.

  369. He, he sacrifices his family and his friends

  370. and his community and his church.

  371. He's sacrificing all these things for his work.

  372. But when I do it,

  373. it's just a special time.

  374. It's a special season.

  375. It's only going to happen for a little while.

  376. And in the end,

  377. everybody's going to benefit from it.

  378. They act like a goober.

  379. Now, I have to give you a definition here.

  380. Goober, G-O-O-B-E-R.

  381. G-O-O-B-E-R.

  382. Some of you go,

  383. G-O-B-E-R.

  384. G-O-B-E-R.

  385. What is it?

  386. A goober.

  387. It means kind of like a jerk,

  388. but it's endearing.

  389. It's, you know,

  390. there's such a goober.

  391. I mean, he's just,

  392. he's a jerk,

  393. but he's,

  394. he doesn't know he's a jerk.

  395. He's just,

  396. he's just kind of funny jerk.

  397. But when I do it,

  398. I'm just having a bad day.

  399. When I watch how they handle their money

  400. in their resources,

  401. they're greedy.

  402. But when we do it,

  403. we're being financially responsible

  404. and we're providing for our future.

  405. And Paul,

  406. in this passage,

  407. says that all this behavior,

  408. all this behavior is a self-righteousness.

  409. And in the Gospels,

  410. Jesus,

  411. remember,

  412. Jesus talked about this all the time.

  413. The only time he really got angry at people

  414. was the Pharisees

  415. because he looked at them

  416. and he realized

  417. how self-righteous these were.

  418. And he basically said

  419. that what they are saying

  420. is that they're good enough.

  421. They're good enough for God

  422. or at least they're not as bad

  423. as the other people.

  424. And so that when they come before God,

  425. God's going to give them a pass.

  426. Because they really don't need a savior.

  427. We only need somebody to fill our 49%.

  428. So Paul says in verses 1 through 3

  429. that the moment we recognize

  430. or we judge brokenness in other people,

  431. he says what we actually do

  432. is we condemn ourselves.

  433. And when we do the same things,

  434. it even gets heaped upon us even more.

  435. I mean, maybe we say,

  436. well, I would never be like chapter 1.

  437. I would never do those things.

  438. I'm not like this person in my office.

  439. I love people.

  440. I'm nice to them.

  441. And Paul says, hey, you know,

  442. we're probably more like people

  443. than we care to admit.

  444. Paul goes on in the passage

  445. and he talks in verse 5

  446. and look what he says.

  447. He says, because of your stubbornness

  448. and unrepentant heart,

  449. you're storing up wrath

  450. for yourself in the day of wrath

  451. and revelation of the righteousness

  452. judgment of God.

  453. What he's basically saying is,

  454. hey, as long as you refuse

  455. to admit your brokenness,

  456. as long as you refuse

  457. to admit your problem,

  458. as long as you refuse

  459. to admit your addictions,

  460. as long as you refuse

  461. to admit that you have sin,

  462. as you do that,

  463. you're just building judgment

  464. upon judgment upon judgment.

  465. And then when you face God,

  466. it's even going to be worse.

  467. I remember hearing this story

  468. one time as a little kid

  469. about this guy

  470. who was really good in business,

  471. but he often cheated people.

  472. And he came home every day

  473. and he had gold coins

  474. to show for his business

  475. and people kind of looked at him

  476. and go, man,

  477. don't you fear God?

  478. You're cheating people.

  479. And he goes,

  480. I think I'm doing the right thing

  481. because God's blessing me.

  482. He's allowing me to get all this gold

  483. and I just keep getting it.

  484. And so if God were really angry,

  485. he would stop it.

  486. And every night,

  487. he'd put the gold above his bed

  488. in the ceiling.

  489. And every day,

  490. he'd come back

  491. and he'd cheat people

  492. and do business

  493. and every night,

  494. he'd answer the same question.

  495. Well, I think I'm doing pretty good

  496. because if I weren't doing good,

  497. then God wouldn't allow me

  498. to have this gold

  499. and I'm doing pretty good.

  500. And he put the gold up on the ceiling.

  501. And one day,

  502. he put the gold up on the ceiling

  503. and he went back to bed

  504. and the ceiling collapsed

  505. and killed him

  506. with all the gold

  507. that he was storing up there.

  508. Sometimes we think

  509. that because we don't experience

  510. heartache or troubles

  511. that we're doing okay.

  512. And what Paul says here

  513. in verse five is he says,

  514. and remember,

  515. he's talking to people

  516. in the church.

  517. He's talking to people

  518. in the church

  519. and he's saying,

  520. be careful

  521. because if you don't deal

  522. with what's going on

  523. in your life,

  524. judgment upon judgment

  525. upon judgment.

  526. I mean, he says here,

  527. the words are very specific,

  528. stubbornness and unrepentant.

  529. They're actually words

  530. that mean heart disease.

  531. And it says,

  532. as long as you don't deal

  533. with what's going on

  534. in your heart,

  535. this is the word for sclerosis,

  536. that your arteries

  537. are hardening.

  538. The words there also

  539. are used in Deuteronomy

  540. for idols,

  541. in idol worship.

  542. And so what Paul

  543. is saying there

  544. to the people of God,

  545. what he's saying

  546. to you and me

  547. is that we look outwardly

  548. at people,

  549. but we don't look inwardly.

  550. We want to present ourselves

  551. well on the outside,

  552. but we don't want to present

  553. ourselves well on the inside

  554. because no one else

  555. is going to see it

  556. and maybe God

  557. doesn't even see it.

  558. And so we look well

  559. on the outside.

  560. We don't kill people.

  561. We don't hit our kids

  562. in public.

  563. We don't yell at people.

  564. We treat people kindly,

  565. especially our employees.

  566. We don't steal.

  567. We don't sleep around.

  568. Everything looks great

  569. outwardly.

  570. And Paul says,

  571. be careful.

  572. Be careful.

  573. We went to a dinner party

  574. last night for our neighbors

  575. upstairs.

  576. It was her birthday party.

  577. Don't tell them,

  578. but I stole the fork.

  579. I was,

  580. it was just,

  581. something came over me.

  582. I was going through

  583. the dinner table.

  584. It was Mexican food.

  585. It was amazing

  586. and it was great.

  587. And I saw this silverware.

  588. I said,

  589. that's the coolest silverware.

  590. I mean,

  591. it was plain

  592. and it's simple

  593. and it looks good.

  594. And then I picked it up.

  595. I said,

  596. I really,

  597. but then I picked it up

  598. and you know what I realized?

  599. It's hollow.

  600. I mean,

  601. it looked so good

  602. on the outside.

  603. I was like,

  604. wow,

  605. where'd they get this?

  606. This is amazing.

  607. But when I picked it up,

  608. when I judged it,

  609. when I felt

  610. if it was true,

  611. when I felt

  612. as if there was anything to it,

  613. any substance at all,

  614. I realized it was hollow.

  615. And this is what Paul says

  616. in verse five.

  617. He says,

  618. be careful

  619. because you look

  620. on the outside

  621. and you say,

  622. I'm not like people

  623. in chapter one.

  624. But what he says

  625. is inwardly,

  626. you have these idols

  627. that you cling to.

  628. You cling to security.

  629. You cling to power.

  630. You cling to influence.

  631. You cling to honor.

  632. You cling to recognition.

  633. You cling to wealth.

  634. You cling to stuff.

  635. Sure,

  636. you're not like the people

  637. in chapter one.

  638. But you have problems.

  639. You know,

  640. I think the problem with me,

  641. I think the problem with us,

  642. if we're honest,

  643. is that when we read words

  644. like sin,

  645. what we usually think of

  646. is outwardly.

  647. We think of things that we do.

  648. We think of things,

  649. maybe if we're really in queue,

  650. we think of things we don't do,

  651. things we shouldn't do.

  652. But we think of outward,

  653. external behavior,

  654. and we compare our behavior

  655. to other people's behavior,

  656. and when we compare

  657. other people's behavior

  658. to our behavior,

  659. our response is,

  660. I'm not so bad.

  661. I'm not as bad as they are.

  662. But when Jesus looks

  663. in this passage,

  664. and when Paul talks

  665. these words,

  666. what he's looking at

  667. is our heart.

  668. and he's trying to see,

  669. are we hollow?

  670. Are we plastic?

  671. Or do we have substance?

  672. Are we real?

  673. There's an amazing passage,

  674. it's one of my favorite passages

  675. in 1 Samuel,

  676. is after Saul

  677. loses the kingship

  678. because his actions

  679. are not what God

  680. wants him to be,

  681. God calls Samuel

  682. to go to anoint

  683. the next king,

  684. and he goes,

  685. and Nathan,

  686. Nathan goes in

  687. and anoints the next king,

  688. and he walks into the camp,

  689. and he sees all of

  690. David's brothers

  691. hanging around,

  692. and he sees the oldest one,

  693. and he's tall,

  694. and he's beautiful,

  695. and he's handsome,

  696. and he's a stud,

  697. and he says,

  698. oh, surely that's

  699. God's anointed.

  700. That's who I'm supposed

  701. to bring into the kingship,

  702. and God says,

  703. no.

  704. He says,

  705. basically,

  706. that man's hollow.

  707. On the outside,

  708. he looks really good,

  709. and he's doing

  710. all the right things,

  711. and he says

  712. all the right things,

  713. but inwardly,

  714. he's not right.

  715. His heart isn't right.

  716. I have somebody

  717. different for you.

  718. I have my servant,

  719. David,

  720. who is a man

  721. after my own heart.

  722. So we see in this passage

  723. that Paul,

  724. and this passage

  725. is heavy, guys.

  726. I mean,

  727. this doesn't bother you.

  728. I mean,

  729. it bothers me teaching it.

  730. The first three chapters

  731. of Romans are like,

  732. whoa.

  733. And you ask the questions,

  734. well,

  735. why is Paul bringing us

  736. into this depth?

  737. And it goes back

  738. to the song

  739. we just sang.

  740. Amazing grace,

  741. how sweet the sound

  742. that saved a wretch like me.

  743. I once was lost,

  744. but now I'm found.

  745. Paul's saying

  746. in the book of Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  747. chapters 1,

  748. 2,

  749. and 3

  750. that we're never

  751. going to understand grace,

  752. that we're never

  753. going to understand God,

  754. we're never going

  755. to understand mercy

  756. unless we understand

  757. how bad off we are.

  758. If we just think

  759. we're 51%,

  760. then God's grace

  761. means this.

  762. And we didn't really

  763. need Jesus

  764. to come die for us.

  765. And so Paul

  766. teaches us

  767. through Romans

  768. this long passage,

  769. it's intense

  770. and full of hardness

  771. and I feel like

  772. I'm sloshing

  773. through the mud

  774. of my life.

  775. He teaches us

  776. this way

  777. because he wants us

  778. to realize

  779. how bad we are off

  780. and how bad we are

  781. and how amazing God is.

  782. The passage is

  783. this is like

  784. if God were

  785. a venture capitalist.

  786. God has given you

  787. everything you need

  788. to do your business

  789. and he just keeps

  790. pouring on everything

  791. and everything

  792. in your life.

  793. And Romans 2

  794. says that one day

  795. the venture capitalist

  796. comes back

  797. and he's going to see

  798. what you did

  799. with all the resources

  800. you gave him.

  801. You're going to be

  802. called account

  803. to how well

  804. you handled his money.

  805. In verse 5

  806. it says

  807. that there will be

  808. a day,

  809. a specific day

  810. that we will come

  811. before the Lord.

  812. Verse 2 says

  813. that it's going to be

  814. according to the truth

  815. that no hollow people

  816. are going to be able

  817. to make it

  818. because God's going to

  819. be able to look

  820. at our life

  821. and he's going to be

  822. able to look at our heart

  823. and he's going to know

  824. exactly what's in us.

  825. Verse 16 says

  826. that at that moment

  827. look what he says

  828. he's going to open up

  829. our hearts

  830. he's going to see

  831. the secrets of our hearts.

  832. There's going to be

  833. nothing in our lives

  834. that are going to be

  835. hidden in God's court.

  836. Everything,

  837. everything is going

  838. to be seen

  839. before the Lord

  840. everything is going

  841. to be seen.

  842. Verse 9 through 11

  843. says that it's going

  844. to be impartial.

  845. He uses this word

  846. impartial

  847. it means

  848. no favoritism

  849. it actually means

  850. not to give the face.

  851. It means not to show

  852. facial differential

  853. don't defer

  854. to that person

  855. because they're so good.

  856. So when we come to it

  857. in verse 9 and 11

  858. and he talks about

  859. that day that you

  860. and I

  861. come before the Lord

  862. he's going to be

  863. totally impartial

  864. it's going to be

  865. just us

  866. no favoritism

  867. it's going to be

  868. based on what we did

  869. who we are

  870. and God will judge

  871. everybody the same.

  872. God's not going to judge

  873. whoever the wealthiest

  874. person you is

  875. know differently

  876. than yourself

  877. but he's going to

  878. judge us all

  879. the same.

  880. None of us are going

  881. to be able to bribe God.

  882. Do you know that?

  883. None of us will be able

  884. to bribe God.

  885. Finally in verses 6-8

  886. he says this

  887. he says

  888. God's judgment

  889. is going to be

  890. objective.

  891. Listen really carefully

  892. because you're going to

  893. misunderstand

  894. what I say

  895. because I thought about it

  896. for many years

  897. before I could understand it.

  898. What this passage says

  899. and what the rest

  900. of the Bible says

  901. is that when you come

  902. before the Lord

  903. you are going to be judged

  904. based on what you did

  905. or did not do

  906. in your life.

  907. Did you hear me?

  908. When you come

  909. before the Lord

  910. you are going to be judged

  911. by what you did

  912. or did not do

  913. in your life.

  914. Good works

  915. will be the test

  916. on judgment day.

  917. What he's saying

  918. is that our works

  919. are going to reveal

  920. our heart.

  921. And whatever is happening

  922. in our heart right now

  923. it just can't be held there.

  924. It's going to get out.

  925. And so whatever

  926. our hands do

  927. that's what's in our heart.

  928. Now listen to me

  929. I'm not saying

  930. that good works

  931. is the basis

  932. for your salvation.

  933. I'm not saying

  934. that good works

  935. are the basis

  936. for your salvation

  937. because as we're going

  938. to see later

  939. in chapters 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10

  940. all the way to 16 in Romans

  941. and the rest of the Bible

  942. that Jesus Christ

  943. faith in Jesus alone

  944. is the only thing

  945. that's going to provide

  946. your salvation.

  947. Faith in Jesus alone

  948. is the only thing

  949. that's going to give you

  950. new life.

  951. But the passage says

  952. that our good works

  953. of righteousness

  954. are going to prove

  955. that we have real faith.

  956. He's saying

  957. that the fruit of our lives

  958. as we walk down in life

  959. and we look at people's lives

  960. that the fruit of our lives

  961. are going to show us

  962. that we're on the right track.

  963. How do you know

  964. if you're on the right track?

  965. Look at the fruit

  966. of your life.

  967. If your fruit

  968. is what this passage says

  969. if it lines up

  970. to what we're talking

  971. about here

  972. then you know

  973. is your fruit

  974. selfish ambition?

  975. Is your fruit

  976. not obeying the truth?

  977. Is your truth

  978. number verse 8

  979. obeying unrighteousness?

  980. Is the fruit

  981. wrath and indignation?

  982. Then you know

  983. you're on the wrong path.

  984. Verse 7

  985. Are you persevering

  986. to do good works?

  987. Are you seeking glory

  988. and honor?

  989. For the Lord

  990. immortality

  991. eternal life?

  992. If you do those things

  993. do you know

  994. that you're on

  995. the right track?

  996. Jesus over and over

  997. throughout the gospels

  998. and we've read Luke

  999. for three years now

  1000. he says over

  1001. and over

  1002. and over

  1003. Matthew 25

  1004. In the end day

  1005. the Son of God

  1006. will come

  1007. he'll come

  1008. with his angels

  1009. he'll separate

  1010. every one of us

  1011. into two groups

  1012. the sheep

  1013. and the goats

  1014. and he'll say

  1015. to the sheep

  1016. well done

  1017. my good and faithful

  1018. servants

  1019. come into my kingdom

  1020. you fed me

  1021. when I was thirsty

  1022. I'm just paraphrasing

  1023. well when did we

  1024. feed you

  1025. when you were thirsty?

  1026. Well whenever you

1027. did it to the least

  1028. of these

1029. you did it to me

  1030. works

  1031. good works

  1032. right

  1033. they're identifying

  1034. what path

  1035. they're on

1036. he looks at the goats

  1037. and says

  1038. hey depart from me

  1039. you never fed me

  1040. you didn't know me

  1041. when did we

  1042. didn't feed you

  1043. when did we

  1044. we didn't know you

  1045. when did we

  1046. didn't visit you

  1047. in prison

  1048. well when you

1049. did it to the least

  1050. of these

  1051. when you didn't

  1052. do it

  1053. you didn't do it

  1054. to me

  1055. Matthew 7

  1056. a good tree

  1057. produces good fruit

  1058. a bad tree

  1059. produces bad fruit

  1060. a bad tree

  1061. cannot produce good fruit

  1062. and a good tree

  1063. cannot produce bad fruit

1064. and so what he's saying

  1065. in this passage

  1066. in this judgment

  1067. that we're all

  1068. going to come

  1069. before the Lord

  1070. and on that day

  1071. again

  1072. good works

  1073. are not going

  1074. to save us

  1075. but good works

  1076. are a result

  1077. of our salvation

  1078. they will happen

  1079. in our lives

  1080. if we're God's people

  1081. chapter 2 says

  1082. that when we come

  1083. before the Lord

  1084. and we say

  1085. that we're God's people

  1086. he's going to see

  1087. good works there

  1088. so the question

1089. I have to ask us

1090. is what kind of works

  1091. do we have

  1092. what kind of works

  1093. are flowing

  1094. from our heart

1095. if the day of judgment

  1096. happened today

  1097. would we be happy

  1098. with the things

  1099. that come forth

  1100. from our heart

1101. or will we be sad

1102. would it make a difference

  1103. would it show

1104. that we're on the right track

1105. and that we came to faith

  1106. through Jesus Christ alone

  1107. and that Holy Spirit

  1108. is in us

  1109. and he's producing

  1110. these good works

1111. and we see these fruits

  1112. happening in our life

  1113. gentleness

  1114. joy

  1115. patience

  1116. kindness

  1117. love

  1118. self-control

  1119. are those things

  1120. being made manifest

  1121. more and more

  1122. or are they not

  1123. do we have

  1124. changed hearts

  1125. why

  1126. is Paul

  1127. bringing us

  1128. down

  1129. heavy

  1130. hard

  1131. everyone

  1132. is condemned

  1133. no one

  1134. is 51%

  1135. everybody's

  1136. a 0%

  1137. good

1138. why is he doing that

  1139. I mean I'm so glad

  1140. that it's just chapter 2

1141. because if he's doing it

  1142. in chapter 16

  1143. I'd be like

  1144. oh

  1145. but he's doing it

  1146. in chapter 2

  1147. because he wants us

  1148. to see

  1149. that until we see

  1150. ourselves

  1151. right

  1152. we'll never see

  1153. God right

  1154. until

  1155. we stop

  1156. comparing ourselves

  1157. with people

  1158. around us

  1159. and in our work

  1160. and making

  1161. comparisons

  1162. and putting

  1163. if we keep

  1164. doing that

  1165. we're never

  1166. going to

  1167. understand

  1168. grace

  1169. we're never

  1170. going to

  1171. understand

  1172. Christ's

  1173. sacrifice

  1174. on the cross

  1175. it will be

  1176. just something

  1177. we think about

  1178. and we read

  1179. but it hasn't

  1180. impacted our lives

  1181. and it hasn't

  1182. changed our hearts

  1183. it hasn't

  1184. produced fruit

  1185. that is good

  1186. until we understand

  1187. the first two

  1188. chapters of

  1189. Romans

  1190. and the rest

  1191. of scripture

  1192. until we see

  1193. just how

  1194. desperate we

  1195. are

  1196. God will

  1197. always look

  1198. so small

  1199. to us

  1200. and the gospel

  1201. will mean

  1202. very little

  1203. to us

  1204. and we'll talk

  1205. about grace

  1206. but we won't

  1207. give it to our

  1208. neighbors

  1209. because they're

  1210. worse than

  1211. us

  1212. but Paul

  1213. is taking us

  1214. to Romans

  1215. and he's an

  1216. amazing writer

  1217. he's brilliant

  1218. it's the best

  1219. Greek

  1220. if you want

  1221. to read

  1222. Greek

  1223. and Hebrew

  1224. it's the best

  1225. Greek

  1226. to be reading

  1227. he's perfect

  1228. he's flawless

  1229. and he's laying

  1230. out this law

  1231. document

  1232. and basically

  1233. what he's doing

  1234. is chapter

  1235. one

  1236. guilty

  1237. chapter

  1238. two

  1239. guilty

  1240. chapter

  1241. three

  1242. guilty

  1243. everyone

  1244. chapter

  1245. four

  1246. Jesus

  1247. chapter

  1248. four

  1249. grace

  1250. chapter

  1251. five

  1252. God

  1253. is

  1254. amazing

  1255. and Paul

  1256. is taking us

  1257. through this

  1258. process

  1259. because he

  1260. wants us

  1261. to understand

  1262. our guilt

  1263. before a

  1264. holy God

  1265. and until

  1266. we understand

  1267. that

  1268. we'll never

  1269. ever

  1270. be the people

  1271. that God

  1272. wants us to be

  1273. we'll never be

  1274. the church

  1275. that God

  1276. wants us to be

  1277. we'll never

  1278. ever

  1279. understand

  1280. grace

  1281. and love

  1282. we'll never

  1283. be able to

  1284. forgive people

  1285. because we

  1286. still don't

  1287. believe that

  1288. God's

  1289. forgiven us

  1290. am I getting

  1291. heavy

  1292. my wife

  1293. just smile

  1294. what do

  1295. you call

  1296. the person

  1297. who has

  1298. an accountant

  1299. or a banker

  1300. or however

  1301. you want to

  1302. invest your

  1303. money

  1304. and that

  1305. person

  1306. continually

  1307. gives his

  1308. accountant

  1309. he continually

  1310. gives his

  1311. banker

  1312. he continually

  1313. gives his

  1314. investor

  1315. millions

  1316. and millions

  1317. and millions

  1318. of dollars

  1319. and that

  1320. investor

  1321. squanders

  1322. his wealth

  1323. that investor

  1324. shows him

  1325. nothing

  1326. for his

  1327. return

  1328. and after

  1329. 80 years

  1330. that person

  1331. has given

  1332. everything

  1333. that he

  1334. has

  1335. and the

  1336. investor

  1337. has ripped

  1338. them off

  1339. what do you

  1340. call that

  1341. person

  1342. if you're

  1343. in Goldman's

  1344. you call

  1345. him a

  1346. Muppet

  1347. right

  1348. what Paul

  1349. says is

  1350. we call

  1351. that person

  1352. God

  1353. God

  1354. you call

  1355. that person

  1356. God

  1357. chapter

  1358. 2

  1359. verse 4

  1360. God

  1361. continually

  1362. gives his

  1363. graciousness

  1364. God

  1365. continually

  1366. gives his

  1367. mercy

  1368. God

  1369. is long

  1370. suffering

  1371. God

  1372. gives his

  1373. love

  1374. God

  1375. gives his

  1376. patience

  1377. God

  1378. gives us

  1379. all

  1380. that we

  1381. have

  1382. why

  1383. the verse

  1384. says

  1385. so that

  1386. we might

  1387. amongst

  1388. all these

  1389. amazing

  1390. blessings

  1391. we're

  1392. receiving

  1393. we might

  1394. see the

  1395. Lord

  1396. we might

  1397. see our

  1398. sin

  1399. and that

  1400. we come

  1401. before him

  1402. as his

  1403. people

  1404. and to

  1405. confess

  1406. our need

  1407. for him

  1408. to confess

  1409. our need

  1410. for him

  1411. how we

  1412. doing

  1413. what do you

  1414. think of

  1415. God's

  1416. kindness

  1417. what do you

  1418. think of

  1419. God tolerating

  1420. you and

  1421. your behavior

  1422. what do you

  1423. think of

  1424. God

  1425. giving so

  1426. much

  1427. patience

  1428. and love

  1429. to us

  1430. how does

  1431. that impact

  1432. us today

  1433. how does

  1434. that impact

  1435. us in

  1436. our workplace

  1437. how does

  1438. that impact

  1439. us with

  1440. our enemies

  1441. how does

  1442. that impact

  1443. us with

  1444. people who

  1445. really make

  1446. us angry

  1447. and mad

  1448. I mean

  1449. we're not

  1450. talking about

  1451. a bubble

  1452. bath with a

  1453. lot of

  1454. bubbles

  1455. cleaning us

  1456. up

  1457. we're not

  1458. talking about

  1459. an FDA

  1460. inspection

  1461. that's 51%

  1462. good or bad

  1463. or whatever

  1464. like that

  1465. but we

  1466. think of

  1467. his patience

  1468. and his

  1469. long suffering

  1470. and his

  1471. kindness

  1472. and his

  1473. perseverance

  1474. what does

  1475. that do

  1476. inside of

  1477. us

  1478. Paul says

  1479. I hope

  1480. and I

  1481. pray

  1482. that it

  1483. humbles us

  1484. and shows us

  1485. how amazing

  1486. God is

  1487. and that

  1488. every moment

  1489. of our life

  1490. we live

  1491. in just

  1492. adoration

  1493. and worship

  1494. realizing

  1495. that we

  1496. were lost

  1497. but now

  1498. we're found

  1499. and it had

  1500. nothing to do

  1501. with us

  1502. it has all

  1503. to do

  1504. with God

  1505. hang in

  1506. there

  1507. it gets

  1508. better

  1509. but Paul

  1510. wants to

  1511. take us

  1512. to the

  1513. truth of

  1514. our hearts

  1515. before we

  1516. can understand

  1517. God's love

  1518. and grace

  1519. and mercy

  1520. to us

  1521. father we

  1522. thank you

  1523. for this

  1524. day

  1525. we thank you

  1526. that you

  1527. are amazing

  1528. we thank you

  1529. for your

  1530. word that

  1531. is living

  1532. and active

  1533. we thank you

  1534. that you

  1535. are just

  1536. and righteous

  1537. and that you

  1538. judge people

  1539. with a clean

  1540. eye

  1541. and that you

  1542. don't give

  1543. face to

  1544. people who

  1545. have advantages

  1546. but in the

  1547. courtroom of

  1548. you

  1549. everybody

  1550. is treated

  1551. the same

  1552. father we

  1553. thank you

  1554. for these

  1555. words of

  1556. Paul

  1557. and I'm

  1558. convicted

  1559. I am

  1560. convicted

  1561. when I

  1562. judge

  1563. and pass

  1564. judgment

  1565. on people

  1566. when I

  1567. say things

  1568. about them

  1569. and then

  1570. immediately

  1571. immediately

  1572. do the

  1573. same thing

  1574. father I

  1575. just we

  1576. just I

  1577. I ask

  1578. your forgiveness

  1579. and I

  1580. repent

  1581. I pray

  1582. for our

  1583. family here

  1584. our church

  1585. family

  1586. we just ask

  1587. your forgiveness

  1588. and we repent

  1589. help us not

  1590. to be self

  1591. righteous

  1592. help us not

  1593. to allow our

  1594. self righteousness

  1595. to hide the

  1596. beauty and wonder

  1597. and truth of

  1598. your word

  1599. and who you

  1600. are

  1601. and the type

  1602. of life that

  1603. you want to

  1604. give us

  1605. and the way

  1606. you want us

  1607. to treat other

  1608. people

  1609. I mean it

  1610. seems incredible

  1611. and impossible

  1612. but it's what

  1613. your word says

  1614. and it's what

  1615. you've desired

  1616. and it's what

  1617. will be one

  1618. day

  1619. what I pray

  1620. for those of us

  1621. in here right

  1622. now who are

  1623. who's struggling

  1624. with even just

  1625. the idea of

  1626. being a god

  1627. I pray Lord

  1628. that you would

  1629. speak to them

  1630. that you

  1631. would show them

  1632. through the

  1633. community

  1634. and through

  1635. people whose

  1636. lives are

  1637. different

  1638. whose works

  1639. are different

  1640. and for

  1641. different reasons

  1642. pray that they

  1643. would ask

  1644. the questions

  1645. is there a

  1646. possibility

  1647. that there is

  1648. a god

  1649. and if there

  1650. is a god

  1651. how do I

  1652. how do I

  1653. respond to him

  1654. what should I

  1655. do

  1656. do I act like

  1657. the person

  1658. who's 51%

  1659. together or do

  1660. I act like

  1661. the person

  1662. who has

  1663. all together

  1664. or do I

  1665. act like

  1666. the person

  1667. which your

  1668. word says

  1669. has none

  1670. of it

  1671. together

  1672. but I pray

  1673. for those

  1674. of us

  1675. who who've

  1676. entered into

  1677. your family

  1678. and we

  1679. wonder if

  1680. our fruits

  1681. are good

  1682. and are we

  1683. producing the

  1684. fruit that is

  1685. of you

  1686. maybe we've

  1687. lost focus

  1688. of you

  1689. maybe we've

  1690. allowed sin

  1691. to come into

  1692. our life

  1693. and to

  1694. shade

  1695. our vision

  1696. of your

  1697. beauty

  1698. and your

  1699. wonder

  1700. and your

  1701. grace

  1702. father please

  1703. forgive us

  1704. help us

  1705. just to

  1706. lay these

  1707. things before

  1708. you now

  1709. as you speak

  1710. to us

  1711. through your

  1712. spirit

  1713. father help us

  1714. to realize

  1715. that we are

  1716. really really

  1717. bad off

  1718. and it doesn't

  1719. get any

  1720. better once we

  1721. come to know

  1722. you but we

  1723. need you

  1724. moment by

  1725. moment

  1726. and that

  1727. badness we

  1728. struggle with

  1729. our whole

  1730. lives and

  1731. there will

  1732. never become

  1733. a time when

  1734. we're 51%

  1735. unbad and

  1736. we're okay

  1737. we don't need

  1738. you we don't

  1739. need to pray

  1740. but your word

  1741. says that we

  1742. will always go

  1743. through this

  1744. journey and

  1745. this pilgrimage

  1746. and that's why

  1747. it's so important

  1748. that we do it

  1749. together as a

  1750. family to

  1751. encourage and

  1752. to lift up

  1753. when things

  1754. are hard and

  1755. difficult

  1756. but help us

  1757. to be people

  1758. who are real

  1759. help us not

  1760. to be plastic

  1761. people who

  1762. look good on

  1763. the outside

  1764. but when we

  1765. experience

  1766. tension and

  1767. pressure and

  1768. persecution

  1769. maybe one of

  1770. our idols is

  1771. taken away like

  1772. our job or

  1773. our family or

  1774. our health

  1775. we just

  1776. snap

  1777. Lord help us

  1778. to see your

  1779. mercy and your

  1780. grace and your

  1781. patience and

  1782. how they're new

  1783. every day

  1784. Father and I

  1785. pray for our

  1786. church that we

  1787. would be a

  1788. church that

  1789. would walk

  1790. in good works

  1791. so that the
