  1. Tobin continues this morning with our study of Romans.

  2. And today's scripture comes from chapter 3, which you can find in your bulletin.

  3. You can read along as I read.

  4. Starting in verse 21.

  5. But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been manifested,

  6. being witnessed by the law and the prophets.

  7. Even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe.

  8. For there is no distinction.

  9. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  10. Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,

  11. whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.

  12. This was to demonstrate His righteousness because in the forbearance of God,

  13. He passed over the sins previously committed.

  14. For the demonstration, I say, of His righteousness at the present time so that He would be just

  15. and the justifier of one who has faith in Jesus.

  16. Where then is boasting?

  17. Is it excluded?

  18. Yes, it is excluded.

  19. By what kind of law?

  20. Of works?

  21. No, by a law of faith.

  22. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

  23. Or is God the God of Jews only?

  24. He is not the God of Gentiles also?

  25. Yes, of Gentiles also.

  26. Since indeed God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith,

  27. is one.

  28. Do we then nullify the law through faith?

  29. May it never be.

  30. On the contrary, we establish the law.

  31. This is God's word.

  32. I just realized that I stepped in something squishy outside with our kiddos left behind.

  33. So I'll try not to move around too much up here as I, but on my way up I could hear squeak,

  34. squeak, squeak, squeak, squeak.

  35. But he is the justifier and he is the just.

  36. If you, we've been on a journey.

  37. We've been going through the book of Romans.

  38. We have been basically in this pit.

  39. So you're probably glad if this is the first time you're here that you weren't here the last week

  40. or the week before that or the week before that.

  41. Because we were just talking about stuff that is uncomfortable to talk about.

  42. It's uncomfortable to preach.

  43. And it's been very challenging as we look at God's word.

  44. And remember we've said that if we come to God's word and we never get upset,

  45. if we hear something that never bothers us,

  46. then we're probably not listening.

  47. Or we're probably worshiping a different God than the God of Scripture.

  48. And so one of the things we did or we tried to do is we opened up a telephone line

  49. and we had people text message questions in.

  50. And so I wanted to look at one of them that came in and just talk about that.

  51. So we've been trying to go on this journey and try to think about what happens.

  52. And I don't have a copy of what I have here.

  53. It says,

  54. Romans 2.6,

  55. You said that one day,

  56. that on the day of judgment,

  57. that we will all be judged according to the nature of our works,

  58. good or selfish,

  59. bad.

  60. However,

  61. last week you said that all of our works are purple,

  62. sinful.

  63. What did I miss out?

  64. Okay,

  65. so I know that we caused a lot of tension as we went to God's word last week

  66. and we looked at what God's word has said about our hearts.

  67. We used this word,

  68. do you remember the word we used?

  69. Total depravity,

  70. right?

  71. We said that total depravity,

  72. that the Bible,

  73. that Romans says that our hearts and our lives,

  74. that we're totally depraved.

  75. And I know that some people had a really hard time.

  76. I mean,

  77. I've had people dialoguing with me and angry and I'm not that bad and I'm not that

  78. good and trying to figure out,

  79. what is going on there.

  80. But we said total depravity means that we're not as bad as we could be,

  81. but that there's not a part of us that isn't tainted by sin.

  82. We do this picture up here and I think we have a slide of it.

  83. We tried to illustrate it.

  84. And I said that if sin were a color,

  85. if sin were the color purple,

  86. that all of creation would be tainted purple,

  87. that maybe we're not all Barney purple,

  88. but that we're all have some parts of us that are purple,

  89. right?

  90. And so we have to realize that.

  91. So when we talk about this idea of good works,

  92. some of the questions we have to ask is,

  93. what is the standard that we are determining what is good?

  94. What is good?

  95. I used the illustration last week of Kip,

  96. and when he learned how to play the game of life.

  97. And he looked at this money,

  98. and my kids are really confused about money,

  99. and he thought,

  100. well,

  101. this is money,

  102. and can I go take this down to the bank?

  103. And I made a great comment about HSBC.

  104. Elaine wasn't here,

  105. but I told her about that.

  106. And I tried,

  107. 15 minutes,

  108. I tried to explain to him that this isn't real money.

  109. And as a little kid,

  110. he has a hard time understanding that.

  111. And the scripture says it in the same way,

  112. that's kind of what our good works are like.

  113. That we do these good works before the Lord,

  114. and we say,

  115. well,

  116. I'm good.

  117. I'm not that bad.

  118. I'm not that bad of a person.

  119. But none of these works,

  120. none of these good works,

  121. are salvation good works.

  122. None of these good works are righteousness good works.

  123. None of these good works,

  124. apart from Christ,

  125. make God look at us and go,

  126. wow,

  127. Tobin's awesome.

  128. Look at what he just did.

  129. None of those things do that.

  130. Does that make sense?

  131. So we're talking about,

  132. when we talk about good works,

  133. apart from Christ,

  134. there's nothing good that we can do.

  135. I used the illustration last week of going to visit Christina in Austin,

  136. and I went to the rose garden at DTS.

  137. Remember that?

  138. And I confessed before everybody that I sinned,

  139. and I stole roses from the garden,

  140. because I thought that they'd be dead by the end of the week,

  141. and I might as well give them to my wife,

  142. my future wife on the weekend,

  143. and I cut them,

  144. and I took them down to Austin.

  145. When I cut those beautiful flowers,

  146. were those flowers alive or dead after I cut them?

  147. They're dead.

  148. They look beautiful.

  149. They look great,

  150. but they're not plugged into a life source,

  151. a life-giving source.

  152. And Romans says that's the same way that our works,

  153. apart from Christ,

  154. that's what our works look like with God.

  155. Now,

  156. almost inevitably,

  157. when I do a talk like this,

  158. or I answer a question like this about our motives,

  159. and our hearts,

  160. and why are we doing these things,

  161. you know,

  162. because there's this idea of this line of salvation,

  163. and we think this idea that faith plus works equals salvation.

  164. But Romans has been saying that,

  165. and the Bible says it,

  166. it's faith equals salvation plus works.

  167. And so when you look at this type of question,

  168. you want to ask,

  169. am I talking about the works I had before I became Christian?

  170. Or am I talking about the works that I've done,

  171. and God's allowed me to do,

  172. after I've come into a relationship with him?

  173. I will say that you need to ask yourself continually,

  174. what is your heart?

  175. And what's your motive?

  176. Almost always after I say that,

  177. someone's going to come up to me and say,

  178. oh,

  179. I just realized I've been serving on a worship team,

  180. my motive is terrible,

  181. I'm just going to leave the worship team,

  182. I'm not going to do that anymore until I get a good motive.

  183. Well,

  184. my first reaction is,

  185. well,

  186. is that what God told you?

  187. But my second reaction is,

  188. well,

  189. what if I said that as a dad,

  190. or as a husband?

  191. You know,

  192. I realized that I've been a terrible husband,

  193. because I've only been nice to Christina,

  194. because I wanted to get sex from her,

  195. and I realized that terrible motives,

  196. and so I'm just going to stop being her husband.

  197. I'm just going to stop being her husband,

  198. I'm going to go off to an island until I get my heart right,

  199. until I figure out how to do that.

  200. Is that the right thing to do?

  201. No.

  202. Scripture says we look at our hearts and our motives,

  203. and we need to deal with our motives and what's going on in our life.

  204. But we don't throw out something that God's called us to do,

  205. just because our motives aren't totally pure.

  206. I'm sure I probably confused everybody the moment I said sex with my wife.

  207. So,

  208. I'll have to apologize to her afterwards.

  209. But you've got to look at your heart,

  210. and you've got to ask the Lord,

  211. one,

  212. do I know Christ?

  213. And two,

  214. as I know Christ,

  215. he's given me these gifts to serve.

  216. When I serve,

  217. am I doing it to his pleasure and to his joy,

  218. or am I doing it for Tobin?

  219. Or you?

  220. A great way to ask that and answer that question is this.

  221. If you're a Christian,

  222. and you're serving,

  223. and you're saying,

  224. I'm serving for the Lord,

  225. how do you react when you get no acknowledgement?

  226. How do you react when you've done all these things for God,

  227. but no one ever comes up and says,

  228. that's a great job,

  229. thanks for doing that.

  230. What are your feelings when you don't get that pat on the back for serving God?

  231. And if your feelings are angry,

  232. frustration,

  233. oh man,

  234. I can't believe they don't appreciate me.

  235. I'm going to go to a church where I'm appreciated.

  236. And Romans says that probably our motives

  237. are not pleasing the Lord.

  238. Because we serve,

  239. and we use our gifts

  240. as an act of love

  241. for all that God has done for us.

  242. Does that make sense?

  243. I know I'm speaking with a Texas accent,

  244. and some of you are looking at me like,

  245. what are you saying?

  246. But that's what we're saying.

  247. So if you've been with us for any length of time,

  248. we've talked often about Scripture like this.

  249. That when we look at the Bible,

  250. we look at Scripture,

  251. we see it divided into categories.

  252. We see it into creation,

  253. we see it into fall,

  254. we see it into redemption,

  255. and we see it into restoration

  256. throughout all time.

  257. In creation,

  258. we come to creation,

  259. and we look at the Bible,

  260. and we see how things should be.

  261. How did God mean for things to be?

  262. What are relationships supposed to look like?

  263. What is marriage supposed to look like?

  264. What is serving God supposed to look like?

  265. We come to fall,

  266. and we see what happens

  267. when sin enters into our world.

  268. We see the purpleness

  269. that enters into our life

  270. and in our hearts.

  271. And we understand what's wrong with us.

  272. We understand why we do the things

  273. that we don't want to do.

  274. We come to redemption,

  275. and we look at how God fixes that.

  276. And that's all about the cross.

  277. That's all about Jesus.

  278. Jesus comes in.

  279. Jesus fixes it.

  280. Jesus is the hero of the story.

  281. Right?

  282. Maybe one question we should ask ourselves

  283. every day we wake up

  284. or when we get done from our work,

  285. maybe if you have a great spouse

  286. or a great friend or a flatmate,

  287. maybe you should ask that person,

  288. hey, who is the hero of your story today?

  289. Who's the hero Jesus?

  290. Or was the hero you?

  291. I think often, if I'm honest,

  292. the hero of my story

  293. throughout my day is me.

  294. And that's what we learn in the fall.

  295. And when Christ comes,

  296. he redeems us.

  297. He makes all things new.

  298. And he is the only hero of the story.

  299. And the fourth part is redemption.

  300. We look at redemption,

  301. and we say, okay,

  302. this is where we're,

  303. I mean, restoration.

  304. This is where we've been redeemed.

  305. We're here now.

  306. C.S. Lewis says we're in the shadow lands.

  307. We're in this in-between time.

  308. We talk a lot about we're in the now,

  309. but not yet.

  310. And so you and I are in the now,

  311. but not yet.

  312. And so the question we have to ask ourselves

  313. in restoration is,

  314. why does God have us here?

  315. What does he want us to do?

  316. What does it look like for us

  317. to serve him?

  318. To serve him?

  319. To be used by him?

  320. The story of the Bible

  321. is not Old Testament

  322. and New Testament.

  323. The story of the Bible

  324. is not little stories at all,

  325. kind of really neat little stories

  326. you tell your kids.

  327. But the story of the Bible

  328. is one big story.

  329. And it's the story of God.

  330. And it's the story of how God

  331. is doing an amazing work

  332. in his creation.

  333. And what we see in Scripture

  334. and in our everyday life

  335. is that God is taking our stories

  336. and is intertwining our stories

  337. with his stories.

  338. And if we let him,

  339. if we submit to him,

  340. if we surrender our lives,

  341. if we acknowledge what's going on,

  342. that when he does that,

  343. something amazing happens.

  344. Something amazing happens

  345. when he intertwines our story

  346. with his story.

  347. And so that's where we're at

  348. in Romans.

  349. So far what we've looked at

  350. is Paul is coming

  351. in the book of Romans.

  352. If you take out your passage here,

  353. Paul was looked at

  354. and so far what he said is

  355. creation, fall,

  356. and everybody's starting to redeem

  357. or try to redeem themselves.

  358. One day I was in China.

  359. I was teaching.

  360. I taught in China

  361. for probably altogether

  362. about eight or nine years.

  363. And I shared this story

  364. of creation, fall,

  365. redemption, and restoration.

  366. I shared the story

  367. with my students

  368. of how God is working

  369. even when we don't see him work.

  370. And in the middle of the class,

  371. a student raised his hand.

  372. And he stood up.

  373. And he said this to me

  374. and I'll never forget it.

  375. He says,

  376. if what you say is true,

  377. if what you say about God is true,

  378. if what you say about the Bible is true,

  379. if what you say about me is true,

  380. then I need,

  381. I need a lot of help.

  382. The student in front

  383. of all the other students said,

  384. because I realize

  385. that I'm broken inside.

  386. And so the question

  387. I have to ask you is,

  388. how can I be made right?

  389. How can God make me right?

  390. And this is where we're at today

  391. in the book of Romans.

  392. Throughout chapter one,

  393. two, and three,

  394. Paul has looked at people.

  395. He's looked at the person

  396. who is far from God.

  397. He's looked at the person

  398. who is moral

  399. and they do all the right things.

  400. He's looked at the person

  401. who's religious.

  402. He's looked at the Jew.

  403. And he's looked at our hearts.

  404. He's looked at our motives.

  405. He's looked at all the things

  406. we try to do.

  407. And he's put all those things

  408. under a microscope.

  409. And he's allowed us

  410. to examine our lives

  411. and our motives.

  412. And then he comes

  413. to this passage today.

  414. And this passage is,

  415. I mean,

  416. this passage is

  417. an amazing passage.

  418. A lot of people would say

  419. that today Romans 33,

  420. 21 through 31

  421. is the heart of the Bible.

  422. Some people would say

  423. this is the most important passage

  424. in Scripture.

  425. That it's the center of the Bible.

  426. I mean,

  427. up until this point,

  428. mankind has been trying

  429. to make themselves right.

  430. We've been trying

  431. to fix ourselves.

  432. And at this point,

  433. Paul comes in

  434. and he kind of throws

  435. a monkey wrench

  436. into everything.

  437. And he says,

  438. stop.

  439. The pathway

  440. that you've been going

  441. is wrong.

  442. But if you head down

  443. that pathway,

  444. you're never going

  445. to end up

  446. in the place

  447. that you want to end up.

  448. So my desire today,

  449. usually what I would say

  450. is I want to give you

  451. three points

  452. and then we're going

  453. to end with some questions.

  454. What I want to do today

  455. is just basically this.

  456. I know it's going

  457. to be hard,

  458. but I want you

  459. to look at your Scripture.

  460. And what I want to do

  461. is I want to look

  462. at the passage.

  463. I want to go verse

  464. by verse

  465. at a couple points

  466. in the passage.

  467. I want to paraphrase them

  468. in Texan language.

  469. And after I paraphrase them

  470. in Texan language,

  471. I want to bring out

  472. some theological terms.

  473. There's three or four

  474. really important

  475. theological terms.

  476. Now usually as a pastor,

  477. when you say theological terms,

  478. people get bored,

  479. they tune out,

  480. they stop thinking

  481. about things

  482. and that's just my wife.

  483. Other people are doing

  484. that also, right?

  485. And so,

  486. but I want you

  487. to hang in there

  488. because I think

  489. that we can do this.

  490. I think God has something

  491. to teach us

  492. in this passage.

  493. So look at Romans

  494. chapter three

  495. verses 21 through 31

  496. and let's go through it.

  497. Look at your passage.

  498. Look at your Bible.

  499. Look at your PDA.

  500. Please don't be playing

  501. flappy birds on your PDA.

  502. We have people

  503. looking around

  504. and they're checking

  505. to make sure.

  506. Paul says this

  507. in verse 21.

  508. But now.

  509. And what Paul does there

  510. is counter historical.

  511. What he's doing

  512. is he's switching the map,

  513. he's switching the road signs,

  514. he's telling every person

  515. basically something

  516. that they've never heard before

  517. because up until this point,

  518. everybody has heard

  519. all the cultures,

  520. all the religions teach

  521. that if you want

  522. to get to God,

  523. you have to do it.

  524. That there's this done box

  525. or a do box

  526. and in this do box,

  527. you just add things

  528. into it,

  529. do, do, do, do, do.

  530. And eventually,

  531. if you get enough do's,

  532. then you get to God.

  533. And in Romans 21,

  534. Paul says,

  535. stop.

  536. He says,

  537. now,

  538. apart from the law,

  539. and what he means

  540. is that we cannot earn it.

  541. That there's nothing

  542. we can do to earn it.

  543. There's nothing we can do

  544. to say that we're righteous.

  545. There's nothing we can do

  546. to earn it.

  547. There's nothing we can do

  548. to be awesome enough

  549. to get it into our life.

  550. What he's saying here

  551. is that righteousness,

  552. getting right with God,

  553. is apart from the law.

  554. That there's nothing

  555. you can do,

  556. there's nothing

  557. that you can't do.

  558. Righteousness is this term.

  559. It means,

  560. we've talked about it

  561. over and over.

  562. It's a term

  563. about legal standing,

  564. and it's a term

  565. about relationship standing.

  566. And what Paul says

  567. in 21 is,

  568. forget what you've been doing,

  569. because by now,

  570. or but now,

  571. the way to God

  572. is apart from your works.

  573. It's apart from the law.

  574. And if it's apart

  575. from your works,

  576. and if it's apart

  577. from your law,

  578. then what you have

  579. to understand

  580. is that somebody else

  581. has to do it.

  582. And so the question

  583. we have to ask ourselves

  584. is,

  585. who is going to do it?

  586. Verse 22,

  587. he goes,

  588. it's a right relationship

  589. with God,

  590. our creator.

  591. That this righteousness

  592. is needed by everyone

  593. because we're all broken.

  594. That this righteousness

  595. is available to everyone.

  596. He says it's by faith.

  597. And when we use the word faith,

  598. it's a very difficult word

  599. for some people sometimes.

  600. But faith just means

  601. believing God's words

  602. and trusting in what he says.

  603. Believing in God's words

  604. and trusting in what he says.

  605. If you were to come

  606. into my house

  607. and I took this chair

  608. and you were tired

  609. and you were going to sit down

  610. and I said,

  611. hey, go ahead and sit down.

  612. This chair is really comfortable.

  613. Go ahead and do it.

  614. And you looked at it

  615. and you go,

  616. oh, that's great.

  617. I believe it's good.

  618. I believe it will hold me up.

  619. And you just kind of look at it.

  620. Or maybe you go like this.

  621. Or maybe if you're really daring,

  622. you kind of go like this

  623. but you keep one foot on the floor.

  624. But Paul says faith

  625. is believing God at his word

  626. and trusting him

  627. and putting your whole weight

  628. in his life.

  629. I think sometimes

  630. we get that confused,

  631. don't we?

  632. A lot of times in our journey

  633. we say,

  634. yeah, I have faith.

  635. I'm trusting God.

  636. I'm giving all myself to God.

  637. But what he says here

  638. is that when we say that,

  639. what we're actually kind of doing

  640. and acting

  641. is we're keeping a couple feet

  642. on the floor.

  643. Because you know,

  644. I don't know if God is really good.

  645. I don't know if God

  646. is really good for me.

  647. I don't know if God

  648. really knows what I need.

  649. So I don't know if I can put

  650. all of my faith in him.

  651. But in Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3:22

  652. verse 22,

  653. Paul says,

  654. having faith in God

  655. means sitting in the chair.

  656. It means trusting him.

  657. It means giving all

  658. that you have to him.

  659. It means leaning on him.

  660. It means depending upon him.

  661. It means resting in him.

  662. It means receiving

  663. everything that you have

  664. based on a relationship with him.

  665. Verse 23 says

  666. that we've all sinned

  667. and we fall short

  668. of the glory of God.

  669. And sin is this archery term

  670. in Greek.

  671. It means we've missed

  672. the center.

  673. We've missed perfection.

  674. We've missed a perfect bullseye.

  675. That we've all done that.

  676. We've all failed.

  677. We've all failed.

  678. We've all broken God's laws.

  679. Sometimes we break laws

  680. by doing things wrong.

  681. Sometimes we break laws

  682. by not doing the right thing.

  683. I mean, often we think about it,

  684. well, I didn't do anything bad.

  685. But Scripture says that

  686. we need to do the right thing also.

  687. And so there's this idea

  688. that we've all failed God.

  689. We've all lived for ourselves.

  690. We've all failed to glorify him.

  691. How many people have failed?

  692. Come on.

  693. How many people have failed?

  694. All.

  695. All people have failed.

  696. All people have missed it.

  697. I think we forget that sometimes

  698. as we walk with God.

  699. Verse 24 goes on and it says,

  700. so God gives us this gift.

  701. And this gift is justification.

  702. It doesn't mean that we're made righteous,

  703. but it means that we're declared righteous.

  704. It's a one-time act.

  705. It's not a process.

  706. It means that God comes in

  707. and he takes all of our sin.

  708. And he takes all of our punishment.

  709. Everything that we deserve legally.

  710. And he places that on Christ.

  711. And it means that from now on,

  712. forever,

  713. if you are in the family of God,

  714. you are legally free of sin

  715. and guilt

  716. and shame

  717. and punishment.

  718. What it means is that when God looks at you,

  719. what he sees

  720. is his son, Jesus Christ,

  721. standing before God.

  722. I mean, it's this judicial act.

  723. Sometimes we talk about it as being adopted.

  724. I had friends once,

  725. they lived in Texas,

  726. and they adopted two girls.

  727. And they were seven and eight years old.

  728. And they came out of an incredibly abusive background.

  729. I mean, they were just abused,

  730. abused, and abused.

  731. And so these friends loved these kids,

  732. and so they adopted them into their family.

  733. And they brought them into their family

  734. in the first three weeks.

  735. And they would say,

  736. can I, can I,

  737. can I get something to drink?

  738. And the parents would say,

  739. of course, it's yours.

  740. All of this is yours.

  741. It's what you get when you enter into my family.

  742. Everything.

  743. The girls would walk around,

  744. and they would see TVs,

  745. and they would say,

  746. can we turn this on?

  747. And the parents said,

  748. yeah, of course, it's yours.

  749. Everything here is yours.

  750. This house is yours.

  751. These beds are yours.

  752. These dolls are yours.

  753. This TV is yours.

  754. This food is yours.

  755. You're in our family now.

  756. And the problem with us as Christians sometimes

  757. is we forget the message of Romans 3,

  758. 22, 23, and 24.

  759. And we live our lives like we're still orphans.

  760. We live our lives like we're still

  761. in an abusive relationship.

  762. And what Paul says here is that

  763. when God looks at you,

  764. when he redeems you,

  765. when he declares you righteous,

  766. he takes all of the hurt,

  767. and all of the junk,

  768. and all of the shame,

  769. and all of the guilt,

  770. and everything that you deserve to be punished,

  771. and he puts it on Jesus,

  772. and he gives you everything that Jesus has.

  773. Is that amazing?

  774. I mean, every time I think of that,

  775. I just get overwhelmed.

  776. Because for so long in my life,

  777. I walked around like I was still

  778. in an abusive relationship.

  779. But Paul says that the message of the gospel

  780. is that everything that God has given

  781. to Jesus he now gives to you.

  782. When Paul said this,

  783. no one understood him and his culture.

  784. Because every religion

  785. and every philosophy in Paul's time said,

  786. do this, do this, do this, do this,

  787. do this, do this, do this,

  788. do this, do this, do this,

  789. do this, do this, do this,

  790. and if you do this,

  791. then maybe you'll get to heaven.

  792. If you are the hero of your story,

  793. and you do it by doing things,

  794. and you get it by doing things,

  795. then maybe, maybe you'll get to heaven.

  796. But for the first time,

  797. Christianity comes in and it says,

  798. no, that's impossible.

  799. That the only way that you can be right with God,

  800. the only way that you can be happy with God,

  801. the only way that you can be made right

  802. into a relationship with him,

  803. is by God coming into your life

  804. and making that possible.

  805. The word there in 24, redemption,

  806. is this commercial term.

  807. When Paul used it,

  808. he would have thought,

  809. everybody would have thought

  810. of a slave market.

  811. And it was this idea

  812. that you walked into a slave market

  813. and you saw all the slaves

  814. and all the terrible conditions

  815. and the redemption part

  816. was that you came in,

  817. you saw how much a slave was worth,

  818. you paid the money for them,

  819. you bought them,

  820. and then you freed them.

  821. And what Paul says is,

  822. God came into our world,

  823. he saw all of us in this slave market,

  824. he saw the price that we had to pay

  825. to be freed,

  826. he knew that there was no way

  827. that we could do that on our own,

  828. even though for thousands of years

  829. people have been trying,

  830. and he put down the money,

  831. and he redeemed us for that.

  832. He goes on and he says,

  833. by grace,

  834. by grace,

  835. grace is a word that basically

  836. just means that God

  837. has shown us favor,

  838. that God has given us something

  839. that we don't deserve,

  840. that God has given us

  841. this new status,

  842. he's given us this new position,

  843. he's given us Jesus Christ.

  844. Grace isn't mercy.

  845. Mercy is when you don't get something

  846. that you deserve,

  847. like punishment.

  848. But grace,

  849. when they use it in the Bible,

  850. is when you get something

  851. that you don't deserve.

  852. And that's the Christian life,

  853. and that's what makes it so different.

  854. When C.S. Lewis in Oxford

  855. heard this story,

  856. he said,

  857. this has to be true,

  858. because no human being

  859. would ever make up

  860. something like this.

  861. No human being

  862. would ever say

  863. it doesn't depend on you

  864. and your works,

  865. but it depends on a God

  866. who loves you.

  867. And so what Paul says

  868. in verse 24

  869. is that now when God

  870. looks at you,

  871. he sees you as his child

  872. and you have a new status.

  873. It means that all of your rights,

  874. all of Christ's righteousness

  875. was given to you.

  876. So when God looks at you,

  877. he sees you are right.

  878. He sees you are accepted.

  879. He sees that you are forgiven.

  880. He sees that you're cared for.

  881. He sees that you're protected.

  882. He sees that you're worthy.

  883. He sees that you're perfect.

  884. He sees that you're loved.

  885. And Paul goes on,

  886. he says,

  887. most importantly,

  888. what he says is,

  889. you're mine.

  890. You're mine.

  891. So when God looks at you

  892. as a child of God,

  893. he sees Jesus.

  894. Hang in there.

  895. Verses 25 through 28.

  896. Paul says this.

  897. This is only possible at the cross.

  898. The only way unrighteous people

  899. can be made righteous,

  900. the only way our unrighteousness

  901. can be made righteous,

  902. the only way that that can happen

  903. is at the cross.

  904. Because on the cross,

  905. God took our unrighteousness

  906. and he put it on

  907. a righteous man,

  908. his son,

  909. God.

  910. And on the cross,

  911. our unrighteousness

  912. was given to Christ.

  913. And so what that means

  914. is that all of God's anger,

  915. all of God's wrath,

  916. we've been talking about

  917. for the last five services,

  918. all of God's frustration

  919. with sin

  920. and how it's coming in,

  921. how it's broken up relationships

  922. and it's hurt people

  923. and it's hurt society,

  924. all of this hurt

  925. God has put on his son.

  926. And the blood of Christ

  927. takes all of that away.

  928. You see,

  929. when Paul said this

  930. before,

  931. everybody in his congregation

  932. would have thought this.

  933. For 2,000 years,

  934. whenever I sin,

  935. I take a sheep

  936. and I take this sheep

  937. to the temple

  938. and in the temple,

  939. the priest takes the hand

  940. and puts it on my head

  941. and he puts a hand

  942. on this sheep.

  943. And there's a symbolic

  944. transferring of our sin

  945. and God's wrath

  946. onto this sheep.

  947. And then the priest

  948. would take a knife

  949. and he would cut

  950. the sheep's throat

  951. and he would take some blood

  952. and he would go into

  953. the temple

  954. in this place called

  955. the Holy of Holies.

  956. And in this temple,

  957. there was an ark

  958. of the covenant.

  959. If you're older

  960. than 30 years old,

  961. you've watched the movie

  962. Raiders of the Lost Ark.

  963. In this ark,

  964. there was the law,

  965. the tablets,

  966. the Ten Commandments.

  967. And above this ark,

  968. there was this thing

  969. called the mercy seat.

  970. It was specially made

  971. with two angels

  972. coming together.

  973. And we're told

  974. that God's presence

  975. was above the mercy seat.

  976. And so when God

  977. was looking down at man,

  978. what he would see

  979. is the law.

  980. He would see a list

  981. of do's and don'ts

  982. and things we shouldn't

  983. have done

  984. and things we should have done

  985. and he would see

  986. all of our judgment

  987. happening because

  988. we didn't do those things.

  989. And the priest came in

  990. and he took the blood

  991. and he sprinkled it

  992. all over the mercy seat

  993. so that when God

  994. looked down,

  995. he didn't see the law.

  996. He saw a sacrifice.

  997. But the thing about

  998. that sacrifice

  999. is that every year,

1000. you and I had to go

  1001. back to the temple.

  1002. And every year,

1003. we had to kill a sheep.

  1004. And every year,

1005. we had to be pronounced

  1006. clean or covered.

  1007. And every year,

  1008. we would wonder,

  1009. was it enough?

  1010. Was it enough?

  1011. Was it enough?

  1012. And Paul says

  1013. in his passage,

1014. that for a little time,

  1015. God allowed those sacrifices

  1016. to cover.

  1017. Not to forgive,

  1018. but to cover.

  1019. Because he was waiting

  1020. for the perfect moment.

  1021. And that perfect moment

1022. was when he was going

  1023. to send his son

  1024. who on a cross,

1025. after living a perfect life,

1026. died and shed his blood.

1027. In the blood of Jesus now,

1028. Paul says in Romans 3,

  1029. 21 through 31,

  1030. saves us.

  1031. It makes us righteous.

  1032. It makes us able

1033. to come into God's presence.

1034. Not because of what we've done.

  1035. Not because of what

  1036. we haven't done.

1037. But all because of God's love.

  1038. and care

  1039. for you.

  1040. It's a little different message

1041. than we've been talking about

1042. throughout the last four weeks.

1043. For the last four weeks,

  1044. it's been about sin,

  1045. brokenness,

  1046. sin, brokenness.

1047. What are you trying to do?

  1048. How are you trying

  1049. to fix yourself?

1050. And here Paul comes in

  1051. and he says,

  1052. you can't fix yourself.

1053. You can't make yourself right.

  1054. You can't obtain righteousness.

  1055. You can't look good

  1056. in other people's eyes.

  1057. You can't even fix

  1058. your own relationships.

1059. You don't even want to talk

  1060. about the things

  1061. that are broken

  1062. in your relationships.

1063. The only way that's possible

  1064. is through Jesus.

  1065. Is that good news?

  1066. For people who know

  1067. Romans 1, 2, and 3

1068. and how bad off they are,

  1069. that's amazing news.

1070. And when Paul said that,

1071. it was the first time

  1072. in human history

  1073. that people heard

  1074. that it's not dependent

  1075. on me,

  1076. that it's dependent

  1077. upon God.

  1078. I have three thoughts

1079. I want to leave you

  1080. and then we're going

  1081. to do communion.

  1082. Three thoughts.

  1083. I'm sure that I'm going

  1084. to offend some people,

  1085. but there have been

  1086. things in my head

  1087. and I've been praying

  1088. through this passage

  1089. and I'm trying not

1090. to spit on the baby

  1091. in front of me

  1092. as I talk

  1093. and things like that.

  1094. first thought is this.

  1095. The word justified,

1096. justification is a legal term.

1097. It means to be declared

  1098. righteous.

1099. It means to be declared

  1100. right.

1101. It means that no one

1102. can come into your life

  1103. and say,

  1104. you know,

  1105. you owe this debt

1106. and you need to pay this debt.

1107. It means that you owe

  1108. no one.

  1109. It means that you're

  1110. seen as good.

  1111. It means that you're

  1112. in right standing.

1113. It means that you have favor.

  1114. It means that you're

  1115. pleased with those people

  1116. around you.

  1117. It means that you're

  1118. worthy of.

  1119. It means that you're

  1120. right in other people's

1121. eyes and in God's eyes.

1122. And in first three chapters,

  1123. Paul is talking about

1124. how you and I go

  1125. through our life

1126. and we try to make

  1127. ourselves right.

1128. We try to make ourselves

  1129. look sexy in front

  1130. of other people.

1131. We try to make our lives

  1132. look good.

1133. We try to make us

  1134. look righteous.

1135. We try to do things

  1136. when we wear masks.

  1137. And if we're honest,

1138. I think many of us

  1139. still struggle with

  1140. that today.

1141. I think many of us

  1142. still struggle with

  1143. Jerry's question.

  1144. Remember Jerry's question

  1145. at the beginning

  1146. of this talk?

  1147. Jerry's question was,

1148. if what you say is true,

  1149. and all that's true

  1150. about God,

  1151. I know my heart,

  1152. I'm in bad shape,

  1153. what can I do

  1154. to make myself right?

1155. I think that we all

  1156. struggle with

1157. what does that look like

  1158. to make ourself right?

  1159. I mean,

  1160. it haunts me,

  1161. those words,

1162. and I think it should

  1163. haunt us.

  1164. How do I

  1165. prove myself?

1166. How do I make myself

  1167. look good

  1168. to those around me?

1169. How do I make my actions

  1170. look right

  1171. in people's eyes

1172. when I know in my heart

  1173. that they're not right?

  1174. We just watched

  1175. the Olympics.

  1176. And it's amazing

  1177. as you watch

  1178. the Olympics,

  1179. there's a lot of

  1180. weird things going on

1181. and a lot of weird

  1182. things have happened

  1183. afterwards,

  1184. but you can count

  1185. how many times

  1186. the athlete

  1187. held up that medal

  1188. and either they

  1189. or an interviewer

  1190. said,

  1191. this medal,

  1192. it validates

  1193. me.

  1194. I mean,

  1195. this medal

  1196. makes everything

  1197. I did

  1198. right.

  1199. This medal

  1200. makes me look

  1201. right for practicing

  1202. and sacrificing.

  1203. This medal

  1204. makes my whole

  1205. life

  1206. right.

  1207. And I heard that

  1208. over

  1209. and over

  1210. and over.

  1211. You're going to go

  1212. to work on Monday.

  1213. I'm sorry for

  1214. reminding you about that.

  1215. Some of you

1216. didn't want to hear that.

1217. But you're going to walk

  1218. into your office

  1219. and you're going

  1220. to do things

  1221. to make yourself

  1222. look right.

  1223. You're going to do

  1224. things to validate

  1225. your existence

  1226. in your office,

  1227. especially now

  1228. as layoffs

  1229. are happening

  1230. for certain companies.

  1231. You're going to try

  1232. really hard

  1233. to look righteous.

  1234. You're going to try

  1235. really hard

  1236. to look right,

  1237. to make people

  1238. think differently

  1239. of you,

  1240. to make them

  1241. think that you're

  1242. doing well.

  1243. For children,

  1244. my little kids,

  1245. it was surprising

1246. to me at the age

  1247. of three and four

  1248. and even today,

  1249. 14,

  1250. 11,

  1251. and 11,

  1252. and 7,

  1253. how many times

  1254. my kids came up

  1255. to me and said,

  1256. am I doing okay?

  1257. Am I right?

  1258. Am I good?

1259. And I watched my kids

  1260. over and over

  1261. trying to validate

  1262. themselves

  1263. to me.

  1264. And I realized

  1265. that there's something

  1266. inside of us

  1267. that causes us

  1268. to have this tension

  1269. and this frustration.

  1270. And we realize

  1271. that maybe we're not

  1272. as right

1273. as we think we are.

  1274. and we're trying

  1275. to fix that.

  1276. I have a lot

  1277. of single friends.

  1278. They're trying

  1279. to validate

  1280. themselves.

  1281. They're trying

  1282. to show everybody

  1283. that they're right

  1284. by getting married.

  1285. And if they can

  1286. get married,

  1287. then the world

  1288. will think that

  1289. they're right

  1290. and everything

  1291. is okay

  1292. and everything's

  1293. perfect.

  1294. I have a lot

  1295. of friends

  1296. with kids

  1297. and it's amazing

  1298. when we get together

  1299. how often

  1300. the conversation

  1301. talks about

  1302. how we can make

  1303. our kids'

  1304. life better.

  1305. How we can send

  1306. our kids

  1307. to the right school.

  1308. How we can get

  1309. our kids

  1310. in the right track.

  1311. How we don't want

  1312. our kids

  1313. to miss anything.

  1314. What I realize

  1315. as a parent

  1316. is often

  1317. I justify

  1318. my own life

  1319. through my children.

  1320. And I feel like

  1321. if I can do

  1322. all these things

  1323. for my kids

  1324. then everything's

  1325. good.

  1326. I'm a good person.

  1327. I'm a good dad.

  1328. Everything's going

  1329. to be okay.

  1330. People are going

  1331. to look at me

  1332. and say wow

  1333. you're right.

  1334. As a son

  1335. for years

  1336. and years

  1337. as kids

  1338. and as boys

  1339. what do you want

1340. to be to be right?

  1341. You want your dad

  1342. to look at you

1343. and you want your dad

  1344. to say wow

  1345. I'm really proud

  1346. of you.

  1347. Wow

  1348. you really did well.

  1349. Wow

  1350. you are really good.

  1351. And man

  1352. you know

  1353. what I'm talking about.

  1354. There's something

  1355. with inside

  1356. of our hearts

  1357. that we seek

  1358. validation.

  1359. We want proof

  1360. that we've done well.

  1361. We want proof

  1362. to know

  1363. that we're right.

  1364. We're all searching

  1365. for things

  1366. that justify

  1367. ourselves

  1368. and say

  1369. you were good

  1370. and you did well.

  1371. Peter Singer

  1372. he's a bioethicist

  1373. at Princeton.

  1374. He's one of my

  1375. favorite readers

  1376. and authors.

  1377. He's an atheist

  1378. and the reason

  1379. I like him

  1380. is he just

  1381. he bugs everybody.

  1382. I mean

  1383. he's probably

  1384. what I've heard

  1385. is he's probably

  1386. the most influential

  1387. atheist writer

  1388. and professor

  1389. in the world today.

  1390. And he just bugs

  1391. everybody.

  1392. He bugs the atheist.

  1393. He bugs the Christians.

  1394. I mean he just

  1395. he's

  1396. and he talks

  1397. about validation

  1398. and righteousness

1399. and this is what he says.

  1400. Listen to this.

  1401. He says

  1402. the only way

  1403. that you can validate

  1404. your existence

  1405. the only way

  1406. that you can validate

  1407. your existence

  1408. is to produce.

  1409. And if a person

  1410. does not produce

  1411. or they have lost

  1412. their capacity

  1413. to produce

1414. then they are not right.

  1415. They might not

  1416. have even earned

  1417. the right

  1418. to be called

  1419. human.

  1420. They have not

  1421. justified

  1422. their existence.

  1423. He's saying it

  1424. right there.

  1425. The way you prove

  1426. yourself

  1427. the way you show

  1428. that you're doing well

  1429. the way that you're

  1430. doing your good

  1431. is by

  1432. doing right things.

  1433. eight years ago

  1434. I heard this

  1435. in a talk

  1436. so I stole it.

  1437. It's an article

  1438. from a man

  1439. in northern England

  1440. by the York

  1441. Railroad Station.

  1442. The man

  1443. had no faith

  1444. and he wrote

  1445. an article

  1446. in a London paper

  1447. and he realized

  1448. that as he went

  1449. to work

  1450. every day

  1451. to the York

  1452. Railroad Station

  1453. in northern England

  1454. I've never been there

  1455. he said there's

  1456. this billboard

  1457. the billboard

  1458. was on the way

  1459. to the station

  1460. and on the billboard

  1461. there was this

  1462. Bible verse

  1463. and it had

  1464. Romans 14

  1465. 12

  1466. he said he went

  1467. back home

1468. and he looked it up

  1469. and this is what

  1470. it said

  1471. it said

  1472. so that every one

  1473. of us

  1474. shall give an

  1475. account of himself

  1476. to God

  1477. so that every one

  1478. of us

  1479. shall give an

  1480. account of himself

  1481. to God

  1482. and he wrote

  1483. this

  1484. no matter

  1485. whether you're

  1486. religious or not

  1487. the longer you live

  1488. the idea of being

  1489. able to justify

  1490. your existence

  1491. keeps coming up

  1492. more and more

  1493. you know I'm not

  1494. a religious person

  1495. but when I go

  1496. by that sign

  1497. I realize

  1498. in my heart

  1499. of hearts

  1500. that the older

  1501. I get

  1502. I need to justify

  1503. why I'm here

  1504. as I talk

  1505. to my friends

  1506. both secular

  1507. and religious

  1508. they talk

  1509. and we talk

  1510. about this idea

  1511. he says

  1512. they look at me

  1513. and they say

  1514. you're stupid

  1515. why do you need

  1516. to justify

  1517. your ideas

  1518. and yourself

  1519. and your worth

  1520. why do you need

  1521. to prove

  1522. that you're worthy

  1523. of being here

1524. you are who you are

  1525. you live the way

  1526. you want to live

  1527. who cares

  1528. what other people

  1529. think about you

  1530. he says

  1531. you know

  1532. people who actually

  1533. believe that

  1534. people who actually

  1535. say those type

  1536. of things

  1537. people who actually

  1538. say they don't

  1539. need to justify

  1540. themselves

  1541. or they do not

  1542. care what other

  1543. people think

  1544. or they don't

  1545. need to prove

  1546. themselves

  1547. they don't

  1548. need to do

  1549. what they do

  1550. they are

  1551. they are who

  1552. they are

  1553. they're going

  1554. to do

  1555. whatever

  1556. they want

  1557. to do

  1558. he says

  1559. people who

  1560. say that

  1561. people who

  1562. live that

  1563. way

  1564. those people

  1565. are sociopaths

  1566. and those people

  1567. are capable

  1568. of very

  1569. very

  1570. very

  1571. bad

  1572. things

  1573. he goes on

  1574. and he says

  1575. every single

  1576. person

  1577. whether you're

  1578. religious or not

  1579. begins to know

  1580. that you need

  1581. to justify

  1582. your existence

  1583. but the problem

  1584. is this

  1585. when you start

  1586. to ask yourself

  1587. what does it

  1588. mean to justify

  1589. myself

  1590. you start asking

  1591. questions like this

  1592. or saying things

  1593. like this

  1594. am I living the

  1595. kind of life

  1596. I think people

  1597. should live

  1598. or am I the

  1599. type of person

  1600. that I think

  1601. I should be

  1602. or am I the

  1603. type of person

  1604. that I think

  1605. other people

  1606. should be

  1607. this is when

  1608. we talk about

  1609. determining what's

  1610. good and bad

  1611. right

  1612. and this was

  1613. his answer

  1614. his response

  1615. he said

  1616. the problem

  1617. is this

  1618. I'm not

  1619. here's the

  1620. problem with

  1621. justifying my

  1622. existence

  1623. it's very

  1624. hard

  1625. it's very

  1626. very hard

  1627. not because

  1628. I'm a really

  1629. bad person

  1630. but because

  1631. I know

  1632. I should

  1633. could be

  1634. and I should

  1635. be

  1636. far better

  1637. than I am

  1638. I know

  1639. that I should

  1640. be living

  1641. differently

  1642. but I don't

  1643. you know

  1644. it seems to me

  1645. if we're honest

  1646. we live in a

  1647. world where

  1648. everyone is

  1649. trying to

  1650. justify

  1651. themselves

  1652. they're trying

  1653. to show

  1654. everybody

  1655. that they're

  1656. right

  1657. they're trying

  1658. to show

  1659. that their

  1660. existence

  1661. is worthy

  1662. sometimes we

  1663. do that

  1664. openly in front

  1665. of it

  1666. with cars

  1667. and houses

  1668. and promotions

  1669. and actions

  1670. and attitudes

  1671. that hurt

  1672. people

  1673. and often

  1674. hurt ourselves

  1675. but sometimes

  1676. we do it

  1677. within our

  1678. heart

  1679. and so the

  1680. question I want

  1681. to ask us

  1682. today

  1683. right before

  1684. we go into

  1685. communion

  1686. is how do

  1687. you justify

  1688. yourself today

  1689. how do you

  1690. prove that

  1691. you're righteous

  1692. how do you

  1693. prove that

  1694. you're in

  1695. right standing

  1696. what do you

  1697. look like

  1698. what do you

  1699. look at

  1700. to justify

  1701. your existence

  1702. are you the

  1703. type of person

  1704. that everybody

  1705. should be

  1706. are you the

  1707. type of person

  1708. that you think

  1709. everybody should

  1710. be

  1711. are you the

  1712. type of person

  1713. that you think

  1714. you should

  1715. be

  1716. how do you

  1717. find value

  1718. in what you

  1719. do

  1720. everyone wants

  1721. to live a life

  1722. that's right

  1723. and has value

  1724. everyone is

  1725. searching for it

  1726. whether we

  1727. know it or not

  1728. and the question

  1729. is where are we

  1730. finding that

  1731. are we finding

  1732. it in our

  1733. work

  1734. what happens

  1735. when we get

  1736. laid off

  1737. are we finding

  1738. it in our

  1739. families

  1740. what happens

  1741. when our

  1742. families aren't

  1743. doing too

  1744. good

  1745. or we get

  1746. divorced

  1747. are we

  1748. having it

  1749. in our

  1750. health

  1751. what happens

  1752. when we

  1753. get cancer

  1754. we can no

  1755. longer run

  1756. the 10

  1757. miles

  1758. that we

  1759. did every

  1760. day

  1761. are we

  1762. doing it

  1763. with our

  1764. kids

  1765. what happens

  1766. when our

  1767. kids don't

  1768. get into

  1769. that perfect

  1770. school

  1771. and everybody

  1772. looks at us

  1773. and goes

  1774. ooh you

  1775. must be a

  1776. bad parent

  1777. I was in

  1778. China one

  1779. time we

  1780. had this

  1781. meeting of

  1782. teachers and

  1783. the teachers

  1784. brought in

  1785. the parents

  1786. and in the

  1787. middle of the

  1788. meeting the

  1789. teacher goes

  1790. okay who is

  1791. Xiaotong's

  1792. parents

  1793. and Xiaotong's

  1794. parents raised

  1795. their hand

  1796. and the

  1797. teachers said

  1798. your kid

  1799. is the

  1800. stupidest kid

  1801. in this

  1802. class

  1803. how can your

  1804. kid be so

  1805. stupid

  1806. what's wrong

  1807. with you

  1808. how come

  1809. you're so

  1810. bad parents

  1811. how come

  1812. you haven't

  1813. done better

  1814. in raising

  1815. your kids

  1816. if Xiaotong's

  1817. parents found

  1818. their validation

  1819. and their

  1820. righteousness

  1821. in how they

  1822. raise their

  1823. kids

  1824. what would

  1825. have

  1826. happened

  1827. then

  1828. where do

  1829. you find

  1830. your validation

  1831. second thought

  1832. as I look

  1833. through all

  1834. this

  1835. we don't

  1836. like talking

  1837. about grace

  1838. let's be

  1839. honest

  1840. I think

  1841. in this

  1842. culture

  1843. we don't

  1844. like talking

  1845. about grace

  1846. we don't

  1847. like talking

  1848. about this

  1849. unmerited

  1850. favor

  1851. we don't

  1852. like talking

  1853. about gifts

  1854. given to us

  1855. there's

  1856. something

  1857. about an

  1858. Asian

  1859. culture

  1860. that we

  1861. don't like

  1862. talking

  1863. about gifts

  1864. we don't

  1865. like talking

  1866. about grace

  1867. we don't

  1868. want to

  1869. owe

  1870. anybody

  1871. anything

  1872. I mean

  1873. the idea

  1874. of getting

  1875. something

  1876. and not

  1877. paying back

  1878. for that

  1879. that is

  1880. beyond

  1881. our

  1882. comprehension

  1883. I mean

  1884. when we

  1885. look at

  1886. the Bible

  1887. and we

  1888. say that

  1889. man

  1890. this is

  1891. too good

  1892. to be

  1893. true

  1894. I'm

  1895. not

  1896. going

  1897. to

  1898. believe

  1899. it

  1900. because

  1901. I

  1902. don't

  1903. want

  1904. to

  1905. owe

  1906. God

  1907. anything

  1908. I

  1909. don't

  1910. want

  1911. to

  1912. be

  1913. in

  1914. debt

  1915. to

  1916. anybody

  1917. else

  1918. I

  1919. can't

  1920. believe

  1921. it

  1922. can I

  1923. be

  1924. honest

  1925. with

  1926. you

  1927. and I

  1928. prayed

  1929. whether I

  1930. should

  1931. say

  1932. this

  1933. but I

  1934. love us

  1935. as a

  1936. group

  1937. this

  1938. isn't

  1939. my

  1940. job

  1941. it's

  1942. my

  1943. lifestyle

  1944. what

  1945. God

  1946. has

  1947. called

  1948. us

  1949. to

  1950. but I

  1951. want

  1952. you

  1953. to hear

  1954. these

  1955. words

  1956. and I

  1957. hope

  1958. that I

  1959. don't

  1960. offend

  1961. you

  1962. too

  1963. much

  1964. but

  1965. every

  1966. one

  1967. of us

  1968. in

  1969. here

  1970. every

  1971. one

  1972. of us

  1973. in

  1974. here

  1975. every

  1976. one

  1977. of us

  1978. in

  1979. here

  1980. every

  1981. one

  1982. of us

  1983. in

  1984. here

  1985. we

  1986. all

  1987. are

  1988. in

  1989. debt

  1990. to

  1991. God

  1992. no

  1993. matter

  1994. how

  1995. you

  1996. don't

  1997. like

  1998. to

  1999. talk

  2000. about

  2001. grace

  2002. the

  2003. Bible

  2004. says

  2005. that

  2006. we

  2007. all

  2008. owe

  2009. God

  2010. we

  2011. all

  2012. are

  2013. in

  2014. debt

  2015. to

  2016. him

  2017. verse

  2018. 24

  2019. goes

  2020. on

  2021. and

  2022. says

  2023. that

  2024. we've

  2025. all

  2026. sinned

  2027. we've

  2028. all

  2029. fall

  2030. short

  2031. of

  2032. God's

  2033. glory

  2034. so

  2035. we

  2036. have

  2037. a

  2038. decision

  2039. to

  2040. make

  2041. either

  2042. we owe

  2043. him a

  2044. debt

  2045. for

  2046. our

  2047. sin

  2048. which

  2049. we

  2050. can

  2051. never

  2052. repay

  2053. because

  2054. verse

  2055. 26

  2056. says

  2057. that

  2058. he

  2059. is

  2060. just

  2061. that

  2062. God

  2063. will

  2064. demand

  2065. a

  2066. payment

  2067. that

  2068. if

  2069. there's

  2070. a

  2071. sin

  2072. broken

  2073. there

  2074. has

  2075. to

  2076. be

  2077. a

  2078. sacrifice

  2079. so

  2080. either

  2081. we owe

  2082. God

  2083. for

  2084. our

  2085. sin

  2086. debt

  2087. or

  2088. we owe

  2089. God

  2090. for

  2091. Jesus

  2092. because

  2093. verse

  2094. 26

  2095. says

  2096. that

  2097. he

  2098. came

  2099. and

  2100. he

  2101. freely

  2102. gave

  2103. us

  2104. his

  2105. son

  2106. he

  2107. freely

  2108. gave

  2109. us

  2110. grace

  2111. and

  2112. so

  2113. we

  2114. all

  2115. are

  2116. debtors

  2117. we

  2118. all

  2119. owe

  2120. him

  2121. and

  2122. the

  2123. question

  2124. is

  2125. how

  2126. are

  2127. you

  2128. going

  2129. to

  2130. pay

  2131. him

  2132. if

  2133. we

  2134. all

  2135. owe

  2136. God

  2137. we

  2138. all

  2139. are

  2140. in

  2141. debt

  2142. to

  2143. him

  2144. how

  2145. are

  2146. you

  2147. going

  2148. to

  2149. pay

  2150. him

  2151. my

  2152. third

  2153. thing

  2154. I

  2155. want

  2156. to

  2157. share

  2158. I'm

  2159. going

  2160. to

  2161. ask

  2162. the

  2163. communion

  2164. students

  2165. to

  2166. come

  2167. down

  2168. what

  2169. Paul

  2170. says

  2171. in

  2172. Romans

  2173. 3

  2174. is

  2175. this

  2176. listen

  2177. really

  2178. closely

  2179. grace

  2180. is

  2181. free

  2182. you

  2183. can

  2184. be

  2185. made

  2186. right

  2187. by

  2188. faith

  2189. in

  2190. Jesus

  2191. blood

  2192. and

  2193. sacrifice

  2194. but

  2195. we

  2196. must

  2197. accept

  2198. the

  2199. free

  2200. gift

  2201. we

  2202. must

  2203. accept

  2204. the

  2205. free

  2206. gift

  2207. as

  2208. Paul

  2209. would

  2210. say

  2211. is

  2212. that

  2213. every

  2214. one

  2215. of

  2216. us

  2217. in

  2218. here

  2219. we

  2220. must

  2221. have

  2222. a

  2223. but

  2224. now

  2225. moment

  2226. we

  2227. must

  2228. have

  2229. a

  2230. but

  2231. now

  2232. moment

  2233. we

  2234. must

  2235. come

  2236. to

  2237. a

  2238. place

  2239. where

  2240. we

  2241. realize

  2242. that

  2243. we

  2244. need

  2245. grace

  2246. two

  2247. months

  2248. later

  2249. 1991

  2250. I was

  2251. teaching

  2252. Jerry's

  2253. class

  2254. there was

  2255. just so

  2256. much

  2257. information

  2258. to talk

  2259. about

  2260. God

  2261. and the

  2262. scripture

  2263. and what

  2264. God

  2265. has

  2266. done

  2267. in

  2268. our

  2269. life

  2270. and

  2271. everybody

  2272. was getting

  2273. overwhelmed

  2274. and I

  2275. was getting

  2276. overwhelmed

  2277. because we

  2278. were trying

  2279. to figure

  2280. out

  2281. distill it

  2282. to the

  2283. deepest

  2284. the essence

  2285. of the

  2286. gospel

  2287. and what

  2288. does that

  2289. look like

  2290. in our

  2291. lives

  2292. and

  2293. it was

  2294. kind of like

  2295. this sermon

  2296. right

  2297. there's a lot

  2298. of information

  2299. flowing out

  2300. there

  2301. whoa

  2302. okay

  2303. so we're

  2304. all

  2305. searching for

  2306. righteousness

  2307. we all

  2308. have a debt

  2309. grace

  2310. is free

  2311. what do I

  2312. do with

  2313. those things

  2314. how do I

  2315. handle those

  2316. things

  2317. and we had a

  2318. Christmas party

  2319. and in the

  2320. party I talked

  2321. about Christ

  2322. coming

  2323. to save

  2324. his people

  2325. that we had

  2326. this debt on

  2327. us that we

  2328. couldn't relieve

  2329. ourselves of

  2330. and Christ

  2331. came and he

  2332. took that debt

  2333. and he paid

  2334. that debt

  2335. and he made

  2336. us right

  2337. and now if we

  2338. take that

  2339. gift

  2340. by faith

  2341. grace

  2342. we can be

  2343. made right

  2344. also

  2345. Jerry shot

  2346. up

  2347. you have

  2348. broached

  2349. my heart

  2350. I understand

  2351. I understand

  2352. my prayer

  2353. for us

  2354. as a church

  2355. family

  2356. is that we'd

  2357. understand the

  2358. good news

  2359. we'd understand

  2360. God's

  2361. graciousness

  2362. we'd understand

  2363. that we've been

  2364. going off in this

  2365. one direction

  2366. and all along

  2367. God has been

  2368. pursuing us

  2369. pursuing us

  2370. pursuing us

  2371. we've been doing

  2372. we've been doing

  2373. we've been doing

  2374. and God's been

  2375. saying

  2376. it's already

  2377. done

  2378. it's a gift

  2379. will you take

  2380. it

  2381. will you allow

  2382. him to broach

  2383. your heart

  2384. and to give you

  2385. a new relationship

  2386. with his father

  2387. father we thank

  2388. you for this day

  2389. we thank you for

  2390. your goodness

  2391. we thank you for

  2392. this news

  2393. which is

  2394. intense

  2395. and it's deep

  2396. and it's complicated

  2397. but in reality

  2398. it's so simple

  2399. the simplest is

  2400. we're lost

  2401. and that you

  2402. found us

  2403. you've opened

  2404. our eyes

  2405. and our ears

  2406. to your son

  2407. who is far more

  2408. beautiful and

  2409. wonderful than

  2410. anything we could

  2411. ever imagine

2412. and we fell in love

  2413. with him

  2414. and you adopted

  2415. us into your

  2416. family and now

  2417. it's not theirs

  2418. and ours

  2419. but it's all

  2420. ours

  2421. everything that you

  2422. have is ours

  2423. everything that the

  2424. son had

  2425. you've given us

  2426. may we be a

  2427. church that

  2428. thinks about

  2429. this good news

  2430. over and over

  2431. and over

  2432. may we be a

  2433. church that

  2434. thinks about

  2435. those who don't

  2436. have this good

  2437. news

  2438. over and over

  2439. and over

  2440. Lord use us

  2441. to share your

  2442. son

  2443. because we know

  2444. that he is the

  2445. only way

  2446. that we can be

  2447. made right

  2448. we love you

  2449. and we pray all

  2450. these things in your

  2451. son Jesus

  2452. holy name

  2453. amen
