  1. Happy Mother's Day, everyone.

  2. Is everyone celebrating, having fun celebrating Mother's Day?

  3. That was very not enthusiastic.

  4. Do we have a lot of disappointed moms out here today?

  5. Happy Mother's Day?

  6. There we go.

  7. All right, just checking.

  8. I have an amazing mother.

  9. She's a very, very generous person.

  10. I love my mom, and I think, you know, growing up,

  11. I just saw again and again and again this generous heart in her.

  12. This willingness to help out people when they had needs.

  13. This willingness to, you know, if someone had a new baby,

  14. to organize people to cook meals for them for weeks

  15. so that they wouldn't have to worry about where's our food coming from.

  16. And just this willingness to open up our house

  17. and have guests come over and even move in with us.

  18. And I think, you know, having this day be Mother's Day,

  19. talking about generosity today is an amazing way

  20. to remember our mothers in the way that they're generous to us.

  21. And, you know, today we're talking about money,

  22. which, you know, Mother's Day, talk about money, I don't know.

  23. I didn't schedule that one.

  24. But I think, you know, the theme of generosity

  25. and on Mother's Day celebrating our mothers

  26. by talking about generosity is a great way to honor them.

  27. And so we're in Romans 12 again, just like last week.

  28. And if you were not here last week,

  29. Chris Thornton started us out talking about generosity,

  30. and he did a great job laying the foundation

  31. for why we're generous

  32. and what it looks like for us to be generous.

  33. So I'm not going to go over that foundation again as much this week.

  34. So if you weren't here, you can check out the podcast online.

  35. It's on the website.

  36. But today we're going to look at our generosity.

  37. Why should we be generous with our money?

  38. And as we just read, we're looking at Romans chapter 12.

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  39. And I want us to see something at first,

  40. that God's generosity motivates our generosity.

  41. As we look at the first verse of Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  42. it says,

  43. I appeal to you, brothers, by the mercies of God.

  44. And basically what Paul's talking about here

  45. is he's referring back to the rest of the letter of Romans

  46. that he's written so far,

  47. which we've been discussing for a few months here.

  48. And we talked about how we have rebelled against God.

  49. We said, God, we don't want you in our lives.

  50. We don't want to have anything to do with you.

  51. We were separated from him relationally.

  52. We were separated from him on a legal status.

  53. We were guilty.

  54. We were deserving of a punishment.

  55. And God stepped in when we were in this rebellious state,

  56. and he gave his life for us.

  57. And he gave us this thing called righteousness

  58. that Paul talks about a lot.

  59. And we said this righteousness,

  60. it's a new relationship with him,

  61. a right relationship with him

  62. that's given to us as a gift.

  63. And he gives us this new legal status with him.

  64. This, instead of being guilty,

  65. we're free, we're innocent, we're saved.

  66. Paul says it in another place,

  67. in 2 Corinthians chapter 8,

    2 Corinthians 8 chapter mention

  68. that God shows his generosity to us,

  69. that Christ, though he was rich,

  70. he became poor for our sake,

  71. that we, by his generosity, might become rich.

  72. In God's mercies,

  73. in God's salvation,

  74. we see the generosity of God.

  75. And Paul's saying that needs to be our motivation

  76. for any generosity that we have,

  77. because anything less than that is going to leave us short.

  78. It's not going to give us the strength that we need to be generous.

  79. And Paul says,

  80. when we see the generosity that God has shown to us,

  81. when we see the mercies that God has given to us,

  82. there's only one acceptable response.

  83. He says,

  84. I appeal to you, brothers, by the mercies of God,

  85. to present your bodies as a living sacrifice.

  86. Now when he says bodies here,

  87. he's talking about everything that we are.

  88. We live as embodied beings, right?

  89. Like, I don't do anything apart from my body.

  90. I don't sit at home on the couch and think,

  91. hmm, I'm going to visit my family in the States in my mind right now.

  92. No, we have a word for what is happening there.

  93. It's called not visiting my family in the States.

  94. Because my body is in Hong Kong.

  95. If I'm not doing it with my body, I'm not doing it, right?

  96. We don't call up on the telephone and be like,

  97. I'm making a telephone call with my soul

  98. and hope that they understand what's going on, right?

  99. Because we're embodied, we use our mouths and our ears

  100. and we're there, right?

  101. And so when Paul says, present your bodies,

  102. he's talking about everything you are, you.

  103. That's the acceptable response to God

  104. and what he has done for us.

  105. He doesn't say,

  106. in light of the mercies of God,

  107. empty your bank accounts, give it all to the church.

  108. He says, no, give yourself to God.

  109. And in some ways, I think it would be easier

  110. if he just said, you know, give all your money.

  111. And here's why.

  112. Because that is something, we can do it,

  113. we can achieve it, we can move on with life.

  114. If we have enough money, we can get our names

  115. put on some cool buildings because we paid for them to be built.

  116. But really, it's just external actions

  117. and it doesn't require any change of heart.

  118. If he says, because of what God's done for us,

  119. just empty your bank account, give it all away,

  120. go on with life.

  121. We can do that, we can move on.

  122. We can check it off the box.

  123. But he says, no, there needs to be a total transformation of us.

  124. We need to give ourselves.

  125. I was talking with someone this week

  126. and he was actually saying,

  127. you know, a lot of times in Hong Kong,

  128. people have lots of money,

  129. but they have skills and gifts and talents

  130. that are more valuable than their money.

  131. And a lot of people don't want to get involved in stuff

  132. in the ways that they could be the most beneficial,

  133. so they give their money

  134. so that they don't have to give their skills

  135. and talents and abilities.

  136. Another time I was talking to a Hong Kong banker

  137. and he said, you know, it's really easy for me

  138. to just write checks and give to charities all day long.

  139. I could write checks and write checks and write checks

  140. until my bank account is down to zero.

  141. But if I really want to make a difference,

  142. if I really want to impact these organizations

  143. that I'm supporting,

  144. I have to get involved in strategizing with them

  145. so that they can make the best use of the money

  146. that I'm giving them.

  147. He says, there's something more than my money

  148. that's required if I really want to make an impact.

  149. And that's exactly what Paul is saying here,

  150. that God, he wants all of us.

  151. He doesn't want just our money.

  152. That's going to come with all of us.

  153. But he wants our entire lives to be for him.

  154. You know, there's a pastor in New York named Tim Keller.

  155. And he has a story about a time

  156. when he was talking with this lady

  157. and she felt, she believed

  158. that we have to be good people

  159. and then God will accept us.

  160. And that's what she had believed her entire life.

  161. And this pastor was explaining to her,

  162. that's not how it works.

  163. Our salvation is totally dependent on God.

  164. God does everything to save us.

  165. All that we bring is our need for a savior.

  166. And this woman, she had never heard this before.

  167. It was revolutionary to her.

  168. And she sat there and she thought about it

  169. and she responded,

  170. that is a terrifying idea.

  171. And Tim Keller's like,

  172. what are you talking about?

  173. This is freeing.

  174. This is amazing.

  175. This is great.

  176. And the woman said,

  177. no, this is terrifying

  178. because if there's anything at all

  179. that I can do to contribute to my salvation,

  180. that limits how much God can ask of me.

  181. But if God does everything

  182. that is required for my salvation,

  183. there's no limit to what he can ask of me

  184. because I completely, totally belong to him.

  185. She nailed it.

  186. And that's exactly what Paul is saying

  187. right here at the start today of Romans 12.

  188. That because God has saved us,

  189. because he has reached out to us

  190. when we were far away,

  191. because he provided what we need for salvation,

  192. and it's not dependent on us,

  193. it's dependent on him.

  194. This life that we have,

  195. there's no limit to what he can ask of us.

  196. And the only proper response that we can give

  197. is to give our entire lives,

  198. our entire selves to him.

  199. But I think when we come to this point

  200. and we think about what it looks like to follow him,

  201. one of the things that's hardest for us,

  202. one of the things that's most difficult for us

  203. to give up is our money.

  204. And I think there's a lot of reasons for this.

  205. You know, in the States,

  206. I don't know if they've got statistics like this

  207. for Hong Kong.

  208. I searched and couldn't find them.

  209. But in the States,

  210. the average Christian gives less than 3%

  211. of their income away.

  212. We serve a God who gave his life for us.

  213. And yet we find it so hard to be generous

  214. with our money.

  215. And I think there's a number of reasons

  216. that apply to us across the board,

  217. whether we have lots of money

  218. or almost no money,

  219. for why we find it so difficult

  220. to be generous with our money.

  221. And so I've listed out some of these reasons

  222. and I want to go through them with us today

  223. and see why each of them doesn't really stand up.

  224. The first one

  225. is that far too many of us

  226. have established far too many treasures

  227. in this world.

  228. And here's what I mean by that.

  229. Jesus said,

  230. wherever your treasure is,

  231. that's where your heart's going to be.

  232. So if we take all of our money

  233. and we invest it in a certain company,

  234. we're going to pay way more attention

  235. to that company's stock

  236. than we would otherwise

  237. because our treasure is linked with that company.

  238. In the same way,

  239. if we take all of our money

  240. and we dump it into a car,

  241. we're going to pay lots and lots of attention

  242. to that car

  243. because it is valuable to us

  244. because that's where our treasure is.

  245. And for a lot of us,

  246. we've spent our entire lives

  247. investing our treasures,

  248. our time,

  249. our money,

  250. our talents

  251. into things that the world says are valuable.

  252. Things that aren't bad in themselves,

  253. but things that,

  254. if we focus on them exclusively,

  255. can turn our attention away from God

  256. and towards them.

  257. Things like education,

  258. nice cars,

  259. nice houses,

  260. nice clothes.

  261. not bad things.

  262. But when we put our attention

  263. on getting these things,

  264. when we pour our treasures

  265. constantly into these things,

  266. our hearts follow where our treasures go.

  267. And the more we invest our hearts

  268. into these things,

  269. the harder it is

  270. to invest our hearts

  271. into the things of God.

  272. And as we follow our treasures,

  273. we are drawn away from God

  274. a lot of times.

  275. And the more bound up

  276. in the things of this world

  277. our hearts are,

  278. the harder it is

  279. for us to begin to be generous

  280. with God.

  281. I think another reason

  282. that we find it difficult

  283. to be generous

  284. is that we believe money

  285. can bring us happiness

  286. in a way that few other things can.

  287. Money is powerful.

  288. Money gets us stuff.

  289. Money gives us security.

  290. Money, we think,

  291. will give us happiness.

  292. There's an article

  293. in the most recent edition

  294. of Vanity Fair,

  295. and it was called

  296. Perfection Anxiety.

  297. It was about how people

  298. with lots and lots of money

  299. think that lots and lots of money

  300. will make them happy,

  301. but really it just adds stress

  302. to their lives

  303. because everything

  304. has to be perfect.

  305. And once you get perfect stuff,

  306. you have to buy

  307. newer, better,

  308. more perfect stuff

  309. to keep up your appearances.

  310. And he had this,

  311. the author had this line

  312. in the article.

  313. It was deeply insightful.

  314. He said,

  315. we already secretly know

  316. that money doesn't do

  317. what it promises.

  318. Nothing has ever given us

  319. as much pleasure

  320. as our pocket money

  321. when we were 12,

  322. or our first wage

  323. at the end of that

  324. first exhausting week

  325. paid in folded cash.

  326. Now we're 10 times richer,

  327. but we're not 10 times happier.

  328. If we had billions,

  329. we don't realistically believe

  330. that we'd be a billion times

  331. better off.

  332. As one art dealer said to me,

  333. if you want to know

  334. what God thinks of money,

  335. look at the people

  336. he gives it to.

  337. We believe that having more money

  338. will make us happier.

  339. Maybe we don't believe

  340. that having a billion dollars

  341. will make us a billion times happier,

  342. but we believe maybe having

  343. a couple more million

  344. might make us a couple times happier.

  345. And so we seek it,

  346. and we go for it,

  347. and we go after it,

  348. and we know,

  349. if I'm generous,

  350. there are things that I want to buy

  351. that I can't buy.

  352. There are promises

  353. that money holds out to me

  354. that I know I can't get

  355. if I'm generous

  356. and if I give stuff away.

  357. And we hold on to this promise

  358. that money has,

  359. seems to offer us,

  360. and we seek it,

  361. and we go after it,

  362. and we aren't generous

  363. because we believe

  364. that money will give us

  365. these things.

  366. And the author of that article,

  367. he finished off the article

  368. saying,

  369. being able to afford

  370. everything you desire

  371. is not by any means

  372. the worst thing

  373. that can happen to you.

  374. But depressingly,

  375. and more profoundly,

  376. neither is it the best.

  377. This is vanity affair.

  378. This is,

  379. you know,

  380. go out here to figure out

  381. what insignificant things

  382. are happening in the world,

  383. right?

  384. And they've got it figured out.

  385. Money holds out this promise,

  386. and it can't deliver on

  387. the promise that it gives us.

  388. But so many of us

  389. hold on to this promise,

  390. and we believe it,

  391. and we spend our lives

  392. seeking it

  393. and going after it.

  394. And it's empty.

  395. It's hollow.

  396. It's not going to give us

  397. what it promises,

  398. but because we believe

  399. that it will,

  400. we find it so hard

  401. to be generous.

  402. I think a third reason

  403. that we find it hard

  404. to be generous

  405. is that we don't actually

  406. believe that God

  407. is generous with us,

  408. or that he will be

  409. generous with us.

  410. You know,

  411. Paul is saying here

  412. in Romans chapter 12,

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  413. the primary reason

  414. why we should be generous

  415. is because God

  416. has already been

  417. generous with us.

  418. He has given us

  419. his life.

  420. He has saved us.

  421. And I think far too many

  422. of us far too often

  423. think,

  424. yes,

  425. I can trust in God

  426. to provide for me

  427. spiritually,

  428. but I'm not sure

  429. that I can trust in him

  430. to put food on my table

  431. or a roof over my head,

  432. so I need to go out

  433. and I need to work

  434. for those things myself.

  435. And we forget

  436. the fact that

  437. everything we have

  438. comes from God.

  439. Even the fact

  440. that we're able to work,

  441. right?

  442. Like,

  443. I don't know how often

  444. you guys think about this.

  445. It's something that

  446. I don't think about that much.

  447. But like,

  448. there was nothing

  449. that we did

  450. to make ourselves

  451. be born into the situation

  452. in life that we were born into.

  453. We could very easily

  454. have been born

  455. into a tribe

  456. in the middle of the jungle

  457. where we never had access

  458. to jobs

  459. or education

  460. or the outside world.

  461. Yet God allowed

  462. each of us

  463. to be born into a situation

  464. where we could come here,

  465. you know,

  466. be in the place in life

  467. where we are right now

  468. where we have roofs

  469. over our head,

  470. where we have clothes to wear,

  471. where we have food to eat.

  472. All of that

  473. is a gift of his generosity

  474. that we did absolutely

  475. nothing to deserve.

  476. And yet,

  477. I think far too often

  478. we're afraid,

  479. what if I lose my job?

  480. I can't give away

  481. what I have right now

  482. because I need to know

  483. that if things go wrong,

  484. I can take care of myself

  485. later on.

  486. And we ignore the fact

  487. that just as God

  488. has taken care of us

  489. up till this point,

  490. he will continue

  491. to take care of us.

  492. And I think

  493. sort of building on that,

  494. but I think it deserves

  495. its own separate mention,

  496. we also don't believe

  497. that other Christians

  498. in the church

  499. will take care of us

  500. if we're in need.

  501. Historically,

  502. one of the biggest reasons

  503. that people in the church

  504. were generous

  505. is because they knew

  506. that when they were in need,

  507. the church would be

  508. generous to them.

  509. So if you have like

  510. Alex, Billy, and Chris,

  511. and each of them

  512. has jobs and families,

  513. and then Chris gets sick

  514. and loses his job,

  515. Alex and Billy step up

  516. and they give to him,

  517. and then he gets back

  518. on his feet,

  519. he's doing okay,

  520. and then Alex loses his job,

  521. and Billy and Chris

  522. give to him.

  523. And everyone's able

  524. to be generous

  525. to each other

  526. because they know

  527. when they have needs,

  528. everyone else

  529. will be generous to them.

  530. But today we live

  531. in this society,

  532. in this world,

  533. in this church culture

  534. where it's all about

  535. us as individuals

  536. or us as individual families.

  537. And we're afraid

  538. to help out other people

  539. when they're in need

  540. because what if I fall into need?

  541. What if I lose my job?

  542. Will people take care of me?

  543. And I think,

  544. realistically,

  545. most of us

  546. don't trust each other

  547. to provide for us

  548. if we're in need.

  549. I once heard a story

  550. about this pastor

  551. in California,

  552. in the States.

  553. And he said he was

  554. at a meeting

  555. with all of the elders

  556. from his church,

  557. and they were talking

  558. about life insurance

  559. and how each of them

  560. has life insurance

  561. their families

  562. are taken care of

  563. if something bad

  564. happens to them

  565. and they die.

  566. And all of a sudden,

  567. one of the elders

  568. speaks up,

  569. and he says,

  570. hey,

  571. I'm going to go out

  572. there for myself.

  573. I'm going to say this.

  574. You guys can cancel

  575. your life insurance policies

  576. because if anything happens

  577. to any of you,

  578. I will take care

  579. of your family

  580. as if they were my own.

  581. And another guy

  582. stands up and he says,

  583. yeah,

  584. I'll do that too.

  585. If anything happens

  586. to any of your families,

  587. I promise that I will

  588. take care of them

  589. as if they were my own.

  590. And they go around

  591. the entire circle

  592. and every man in there

  593. stands up and says,

  594. if you guys,

  595. if anything happens

  596. to any of you,

  597. I will take care

  598. of your families

  599. as if they were my own.

  600. And they all went out

  601. and they canceled

  602. their life insurance policies

  603. because they knew

  604. that they had

  605. each other's backs.

  606. And they said

  607. they were able

  608. to take that money

  609. and give it away generously

  610. because they weren't

  611. concerned about

  612. what would happen

  613. if something happened

  614. to them

  615. because they knew

  616. this group of people

  617. that was in that room

  618. had their backs

  619. and had their family's backs.

  620. I think for most of us

  621. in this room,

  622. if we had someone

  623. say that to us,

  624. we'd be like,

  625. no way.

  626. I'll believe that

  627. when I see it,

  628. but since I won't

  629. be around to see it,

  630. I'll hedge my bets

  631. and keep my life insurance,

  632. right?

  633. We live in this society

  634. that is very individually focused.

  635. We don't believe each other

  636. that we have each other's backs.

  637. It's sad.

  638. And Paul says right here

  639. in chapter 12,

  640. verse 5,

  641. that we are one body

  642. in Christ

  643. and individually members

  644. of one another.

  645. Now,

  646. if we think about that picture,

  647. we're all part

  648. of the same body.

  649. You know,

  650. in my body,

  651. sometimes I get injured.

  652. In November,

  653. I had my knees injured

  654. for a couple months.

  655. And the rest of your body

  656. can't go on

  657. as if nothing happened.

  658. The rest of your body

  659. adjusts

  660. because of that pain

  661. in your knees.

  662. Your knees are something

  663. you don't really think about them

  664. until they stop working

  665. like they're supposed to,

  666. right?

  667. You take your knees

  668. for granted all the time

  669. and then you get pain

  670. in your knee

  671. and every single step

  672. is agony.

  673. And so for a couple weeks,

  674. I'd be walking along

  675. and if there was a railing there,

  676. I would grab onto the railing

  677. and spread the weight,

  678. you know,

  679. around my arm

  680. and upper body

  681. because I wanted

  682. to take the weight

  683. off of my knees.

  684. The stronger parts

  685. of my body

  686. picked up the slack

  687. for the weaker parts.

  688. If I was walking normally,

  689. I'd try and readjust

  690. the weight on my feet

  691. from the way

  692. I would normally walk

  693. so that it would take

  694. the stress off the parts

  695. of my knees

  696. that were hurting.

  697. I was more likely

  698. to sit down

  699. and take a rest

  700. or take a break

  701. which took a hurt

  702. to my pride

  703. but it gave my knees

  704. a rest

  705. and my knees

  706. needed that rest

  707. because they were injured

  708. because my knees

  709. don't exist

  710. in isolation

  711. from the rest of my body.

  712. My knees are a part

  713. of the body

  714. and if that part

  715. of my body

  716. is hurting,

  717. if that part

  718. of my body

  719. is not working properly,

  720. the rest of my body

  721. needs to adjust

  722. because of that.

  723. And Paul says

  724. in the same way,

  725. we are one body.

  726. Some of us are knees,

  727. some of us are arms,

  728. some of us are eyes

  729. and ears

  730. and toes

  731. but just like in my body

  732. when my knees

  733. started hurting,

  734. everything else

  735. had to adjust.

  736. He says

  737. if someone here

  738. is hurting,

  739. we as the body

  740. need to adjust.

  741. We as the body

  742. need to step in

  743. and take care.

  744. Those of us

  745. who are stronger

  746. in that time

  747. need to step in

  748. and help out

  749. the ones who are weaker

  750. in that time.

  751. And there may be a time

  752. when we who are stronger now

  753. have trouble,

  754. have pain.

  755. But that's why we have a body

  756. so that we can support

  757. one another

  758. so we can pick

  759. one another up

  760. so we can help

  761. one another out.

  762. and I think this is something

  763. that we have lost

  764. in the church today

  765. where we don't understand

  766. that we are a body.

  767. We see ourselves

  768. as individuals

  769. not as individual members

  770. of a whole.

  771. And I think if we understood

  772. that we are a body,

  773. if we knew

  774. that everyone has my back

  775. and so I can have theirs,

  776. it frees us.

  777. It liberates us

  778. to go out there

  779. and to live life generously

  780. because if something

  781. happens to me

  782. and I lose out

  783. on all that I have right now,

  784. I'm not actually losing out

  785. because I have other people

  786. who will take care of me

  787. when that happens to me.

  788. And I think

  789. because we've lost

  790. this view of us

  791. as a body,

  792. we lose out

  793. on our opportunities

  794. to be generous.

  795. Another reason

  796. we find it so hard

  797. to be generous

  798. is that we don't see

  799. what benefit

  800. we're getting

  801. from our giving.

  802. We live in a world

  803. where the questions

  804. we ask with our money

  805. are what profit

  806. will I get from this?

  807. How will this benefit me?

  808. And generosity

  809. by definition

  810. does not benefit us.

  811. It's other focused.

  812. You're not going to

  813. give out your money

  814. as an investment

  815. and get it back

  816. with interest.

  817. It's a gift.

  818. And we find it so hard

  819. to do that

  820. because we've trained

  821. ourselves so much.

  822. I give something

  823. and I get something

  824. in return.

  825. And generosity

  826. is about I give something

  827. so that someone else

  828. can get something.

  829. And our mindset

  830. is so totally different

  831. from what's required

  832. for true generosity

  833. that we can't wrap

  834. our heads around

  835. the idea

  836. of giving something

  837. away to help

  838. someone else.

  839. And there are

  840. definitely more reasons

  841. but the final one

  842. that I came up with

  843. for why we find it

  844. so hard to be generous

  845. is because being

  846. truly generous

  847. requires us

  848. to get involved

  849. in the lives

  850. of other people

  851. in ways that are

  852. often discouraging

  853. frustrating

  854. and uncomfortable.

  855. A lot of times

  856. we can hear about

  857. a need

  858. and think

  859. the easy thing

  860. to do is to just

  861. pump money into this.

  862. Give money.

  863. Give money.

  864. Give money.

  865. But a lot of times

  866. people's needs

  867. aren't due

  868. to a lack of resources.

  869. It's due to a lack

  870. of understanding

  871. of how to use resources

  872. when they have them.

  873. Or there's other issues

  874. that underlie

  875. the lack of resources.

  876. resources.

  877. And so just pumping

  878. resources and money

  879. into the situation

  880. doesn't actually

  881. fix the problem.

  882. A lot of times

  883. it can make it worse.

  884. And we can give money

  885. and give money

  886. and give money

  887. and find out

  888. that the problem's

  889. still there.

  890. And then it becomes

  891. frustrating

  892. because I've done

  893. so much for this person.

  894. I've given so much.

  895. Why isn't the problem

  896. fixed?

  897. And a lot of times

  898. what's needed

  899. for our generosity

  900. is for us to step in

  901. to get involved

  902. in their lives.

  903. You know,

  904. Paul says in

  905. chapter 12,

  906. verse 13,

  907. contribute to the needs

  908. of the saints.

  909. We can't know

  910. what the true needs are

  911. in each other's lives

  912. unless we're deeply involved

  913. in each other's lives.

  914. We can see

  915. surface level things

  916. that appear to be needs

  917. and try and address those

  918. without getting deeply involved.

  919. But a lot of times

  920. they'll leave us frustrated.

  921. to truly know

  922. what the needs are,

  923. we need to get involved

  924. in each other's lives.

  925. And when we do that,

  926. it gets messy.

  927. And we get dragged

  928. into these messes

  929. that we didn't create

  930. that we're not responsible for.

  931. It's frustrating.

  932. It's uncomfortable.

  933. It's messy.

  934. But it's what's required of us

  935. if we're going to be

  936. truly generous,

  937. if we're truly going

  938. to look out

  939. for the needs of others

  940. and not just give

  941. to satiate our guilt.

  942. for having more

  943. while they're having trouble.

  944. One example of a time

  945. that this could happen is,

  946. and I've got to be careful

  947. with this because there

  948. might be people in here

  949. who are struggling

  950. with this issue,

  951. but I know it's a very

  952. common issue in Hong Kong

  953. is that Filipino maids

  954. will come over here

  955. to provide for their families.

  956. And they want to take care

  957. of their families

  958. and they want to give,

  959. give, give, give, give, give.

  960. But they've never been taught

  961. how to budget.

  962. So they give, give, give, give, give,

  963. and give away more

  964. than they actually have

  965. and then they fall into debt

  966. and they have trouble

  967. with loan sharks.

  968. And you know,

  969. this is a situation

  970. if you hear about it

  971. and you think,

  972. oh, this person's in debt,

  973. I have resources,

  974. I can help them,

  975. and you give money,

  976. but then the next month

  977. you hear that they're in debt again

  978. because they've just kept

  979. giving, giving, giving,

  980. giving, giving.

  981. And what's needed there

  982. is not just someone

  983. to pump money in.

  984. The issue isn't a lack of resources.

  985. The issue is not knowing

  986. how to budget,

  987. not knowing how to say no

  988. when people ask for money.

  989. And what that person,

  990. what that helper really needs

  991. is for someone to step

  992. into their life,

  993. to come alongside them,

  994. to say, you know,

  995. here's how you budget money.

  996. If someone asks you for money

  997. and you don't have money,

  998. it's not a shameful thing

  999. to say, no,

  1000. I can't give you anything

  1001. because I don't have

  1002. anything more to give.

  1003. But that requires us

1004. to step in to get messy.

1005. And I think a lot of times

1006. it's far too uncomfortable for us.

  1007. It's far too difficult.

  1008. And really,

1009. if we're trying to be generous

  1010. for ourselves

1011. and not for the good of others,

  1012. that type of generosity

  1013. will crush us.

1014. If we're trying to run

  1015. on our own motivation,

  1016. our own strength,

1017. and not looking at God

  1018. and His generosity

  1019. as our motivation

  1020. for our generosity,

  1021. that type of generosity

  1022. will crush us.

  1023. And God,

1024. He wants us to be generous.

1025. He wants us to give our money,

1026. but He also wants us

  1027. to give ourselves.

  1028. Right?

  1029. We said that already.

  1030. But there's a part

  1031. of His mercies

  1032. that Paul talks about

1033. earlier in the book of Romans

1034. that I sort of left out

  1035. earlier in the sermon

  1036. when I was talking

  1037. about God's mercies.

1038. Paul talks a lot about

  1039. God's mercies towards us

  1040. as individuals.

1041. But he also talks about

  1042. God's mercies

1043. to the universe as a whole.

  1044. In Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1045. Paul says that God

  1046. is in the process

1047. of making all things new.

  1048. That God,

  1049. that God is going

  1050. to restore creation.

  1051. That creation knows

  1052. about this

  1053. and it's crying out

1054. like the pains of childbirth,

  1055. just waiting for something

  1056. new to be born.

  1057. that it feels

  1058. this,

  1059. this weight,

  1060. waiting for something.

  1061. Waiting for something

1062. that it knows is coming,

1063. but it doesn't know when.

  1064. And it knows

1065. it's going to be amazing.

  1066. And someday,

  1067. God's going to finish

  1068. this work

1069. and He's going to make

  1070. all things new.

  1071. But it says today,

  1072. He's calling us

  1073. and inviting us

1074. to be a part of that process.

  1075. He's inviting us

  1076. to join Him

  1077. in what He's doing.

  1078. So when we say

  1079. we're,

  1080. we're inspired

  1081. by God's mercies,

  1082. yes,

  1083. it's God's mercies

  1084. towards us as individuals.

1085. The fact that He's saved us

1086. when we didn't deserve it.

1087. The fact that He's purchased us.

  1088. But it's also

  1089. His doing

1090. of making all things new.

1091. There are a lot of things

1092. that we as a church

  1093. want to do.

1094. We want to reach out

  1095. to the western side

  1096. of Hong Kong Island.

1097. We want to be in the schools.

1098. We want to be in the universities.

1099. We want to be involved

  1100. in homeless ministries

  1101. and inner city ministries.

  1102. And we want to,

1103. we want to be out there.

  1104. And again,

  1105. these are things

1106. that I think are awesome things

  1107. for the kingdom.

  1108. I get excited

1109. when I hear about the things

1110. that we as a church are doing.

  1111. And it's true,

  1112. God doesn't need us.

1113. God doesn't need our money

  1114. to do the things

1115. that He's going to do

  1116. in the world.

1117. But there are certain ways

1118. that we as a church,

  1119. Watermark,

1120. want to be a part of that

  1121. that we can't do

  1122. without funding.

1123. And so I want to,

1124. I want to close today

1125. by dreaming a little bit.

1126. I want to think about

1127. what could it look like

1128. if we as a church

  1129. decided to be generous.

1130. If we as a church

  1131. decided that we wanted

  1132. to partner with God

  1133. in what He's doing

  1134. in Hong Kong

  1135. and around the world.

  1136. And statistically,

1137. I know there are many

  1138. exceptions to this rule

1139. and a lot of them

  1140. in this room,

  1141. but statistically,

1142. the more money you have,

1143. the less likely you are

1144. to be generous with it.

1145. And so I want to dream big.

  1146. I want to dream

1147. of what we could do

1148. if we gave lots of money away.

  1149. And there are things

1150. that I'm going to say

  1151. that some of us,

  1152. you know,

1153. we can't do as individuals,

1154. but if we feel passionate

  1155. about it,

  1156. we could get together

  1157. and these things

  1158. could become realities.

  1159. Right?

1160. So I'm going to dream big

  1161. and then we're going

  1162. to close up.

  1163. The first thing

1164. I want to throw out there,

  1165. church planting.

  1166. Watermark is a part

1167. of a church planting network.

  1168. I don't know

1169. if you guys know this,

  1170. but we're part

1171. of a church planting network

  1172. that has a vision

1173. of planting over 200 churches

1174. in the next 10 years

  1175. in the Asia

  1176. and Australia region.

  1177. That's on average

  1178. over 20 churches a year

1179. for the next 10 years

  1180. and hopefully

  1181. many, many more

  1182. after that.

  1183. These churches

  1184. will be in cities

1185. that we as a church

  1186. cannot reach

  1187. from Hong Kong.

  1188. They'll be spread

  1189. all over.

  1190. They will reach

  1191. hopefully thousands,

  1192. tens of thousands,

  1193. maybe even hundreds

  1194. of thousands of people.

  1195. And every single one

  1196. of them requires

  1197. funding to get started.

  1198. What if someone

  1199. here today said,

  1200. I want to adopt

  1201. a church plant.

1202. I want to sponsor it

1203. for the first few years

  1204. until they can become

  1205. self-sustaining.

  1206. I want to give

  1207. or get a group

  1208. of us together

  1209. and together

  1210. sponsor a church plant.

  1211. And God could use

  1212. our generosity

  1213. to reach thousands

  1214. of people

  1215. around the world

  1216. in these new churches

  1217. that are starting

  1218. in countries

  1219. from Japan

  1220. to Thailand

  1221. to Australia

  1222. to Singapore.

  1223. All over.

  1224. Imagine the impact

  1225. that it could have

  1226. if we were generous

  1227. with what God

  1228. has given us.

  1229. Or another one.

  1230. I don't know

  1231. if you've realized it,

1232. but we have a group

  1233. of Nepali kids

  1234. that come into church

  1235. here every Sunday.

  1236. And these kids

  1237. come from an area

  1238. of town

  1239. that's in desperate

  1240. need of educational

  1241. reform.

1242. These kids go to schools

  1243. where they're taught

  1244. verbally and non-verbally,

  1245. you're a problem,

  1246. not a person.

1247. These kids go to schools,

1248. even though many of them

  1249. are very bright kids,

  1250. they go to schools

  1251. that crush any desire

  1252. for them to learn.

  1253. They go to schools

  1254. where, you know,

1255. some kids in these schools

  1256. should be held back

  1257. because they haven't

  1258. learned the material yet,

  1259. but the teachers

  1260. don't want to deal

  1261. with discipline problems

1262. that will be in the class

1263. next year if the kids

  1264. stay back,

1265. so they just push them

1266. on to the next grade.

1267. And kids in these schools

1268. can be in sixth grade

  1269. and not even know

  1270. how to read.

  1271. This area of town

  1272. is in desperate need

  1273. for education reform.

  1274. They need a school

  1275. that will come in

1276. and will teach the kids

  1277. that you have value

  1278. as a human being,

  1279. that you can contribute

  1280. to society

  1281. when you grow up,

  1282. that God loves you

  1283. and you have worth.

  1284. And there are people

1285. in this church right now

  1286. who have a vision

  1287. and a dream

1288. to start a school like that

  1289. in that neighborhood

  1290. that can reach out

  1291. to these kids,

  1292. that can drastically

  1293. impact their lives,

  1294. that can transform

  1295. a community.

  1296. But here's the thing,

1297. the people with this dream

  1298. are teachers.

  1299. And starting a school

1300. like this in Hong Kong

  1301. is very expensive,

  1302. a lot more than a teacher

  1303. could sponsor themselves.

1304. Even if we found teachers

  1305. who could raise support

  1306. themselves

  1307. and come over here

1308. and teach at the school,

1309. you still need a venue,

1310. you still need to get it

1311. registered by the Hong Kong

  1312. government,

1313. you still need to get

  1314. curriculum.

  1315. It's expensive.

1316. But what if someone here

  1317. said,

  1318. I want to sponsor

  1319. a school like that

1320. for the first two years.

  1321. I want to make

  1322. this dream a reality,

  1323. I want to impact

  1324. this neighborhood.

  1325. It's not something

1326. that we're going to see

  1327. immediate results from.

  1328. It's not something

  1329. we're going to see

  1330. probably in the first

  1331. couple of years

  1332. results from.

  1333. But it's something

  1334. that in the course

  1335. of a generation

  1336. can totally transform

  1337. a community.

  1338. It's a way that God

1339. can use us to be a part

  1340. of something much bigger

1341. than ourselves in Hong Kong

  1342. if we decide

  1343. to be generous people.

  1344. Or maybe we put

  1345. these two dreams

  1346. of church planting

  1347. and starting a school

  1348. together and someone

1349. either with lots of money

  1350. or lots of connections

  1351. says,

1352. what if we just go

  1353. to that neighborhood

1354. and we buy a building?

  1355. And inside that building

  1356. we start a school

  1357. and inside that building

1358. we can start a new church.

  1359. And with any

  1360. leftover space

  1361. in that building

1362. maybe we can put in

  1363. businesses that will

1364. provide jobs for the community

  1365. or businesses that will

  1366. provide services

1367. that will help the community

  1368. or affordable housing

1369. for people in the community.

  1370. It would be amazing.

  1371. It would be awesome.

1372. God could use our generosity

  1373. to transform

  1374. these communities.

  1375. I think, you know,

  1376. if that happened

  1377. it would be amazing.

  1378. We'd need a word

  1379. that's so big

  1380. that it's a word

  1381. you only use

  1382. when you have

  1383. no word for something

  1384. like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

  1385. I think these are

  1386. awesome, huge, big dreams.

  1387. They're possible

  1388. because we serve

1389. an awesome, huge, big God

1390. who has shown his love

  1391. to us in awesome,

  1392. huge, big ways.

1393. But this type of generosity

  1394. isn't something

  1395. that we can just

  1396. force ourselves into.

  1397. Something we need

  1398. to understand

  1399. God's mercy to us.

  1400. We need to understand

1401. the part that we play

1402. in the work that he's doing

  1403. in the world

1404. and see how he's inviting us

1405. to be a part of it.

1406. I just want to close

  1407. with that quote

  1408. from Vanity Fair again

  1409. because I think

  1410. it's deep.

  1411. I think it's

  1412. really, really

  1413. eye-opening.

  1414. He said,

1415. if I can find it,

  1416. it's in here somewhere.

  1417. Well, he said,

  1418. we already secretly know

  1419. that money

  1420. can't give us

  1421. everything that it promises

  1422. to us.

  1423. no amount of money

  1424. has ever given us

1425. the same amount of joy

  1426. that we had

1427. when we had pocket money

  1428. at 12 years old.

  1429. No amount of money

  1430. has ever given us

  1431. the amount of joy

  1432. that we received

1433. when we got that first

  1434. paycheck in folded cash

  1435. after our first

  1436. hard week of work.

  1437. We're 10 times richer,

  1438. but we're not

  1439. 10 times happier.

  1440. And realistically,

  1441. we don't believe

  1442. that if we were

  1443. a billion times richer,

  1444. we would be

  1445. a billion times happier.

1446. If you want to know

  1447. what God thinks

  1448. of money,

  1449. look at the people

  1450. he gives it to.

  1451. Let's pray.

  1452. Father,

  1453. we thank you

  1454. for your generosity

  1455. to us.

  1456. We thank you

  1457. for the fact

1458. that you have loved us

1459. when we did not deserve it,

  1460. that you have purchased

  1461. our salvation

  1462. entirely

1463. at a cost to you

  1464. and completely

  1465. freely for ourselves.

1466. We pray that we would

  1467. recognize the call

  1468. that we have

  1469. to give our lives,

  1470. our entire lives,

  1471. to you.

  1472. And that along

  1473. with our lives,

  1474. we would be generous

  1475. with our money.

  1476. We would not live

  1477. in fear of what

  1478. would happen

  1479. if something happened

1480. to us after we were

  1481. generous.

  1482. That we would see

  1483. the work you're doing

  1484. in the world,

  1485. that we would partner

  1486. with you in that,

  1487. and that you would

  1488. use our generosity

  1489. to transform the city

  1490. of Hong Kong,

  1491. the continent of Asia,

  1492. and the entire world.

  1493. And in Jesus' name,

  1494. Amen.
