  1. Let us pray.

  2. Father, we thank you for gathering us here together this morning in the name of Jesus.

  3. And we ask for the help of your Holy Spirit,

  4. that the unfolding of your word would give light,

  5. and that by walking in that light that you give us,

  6. we would have true fellowship with you, our Father,

  7. and with your Son, Jesus, and with one another.

  8. These things we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

  9. Please be seated.

  10. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden,

  11. and I will give you rest.

  12. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  13. for I am gentle and lowly in heart,

  14. and you will find rest for your souls,

  15. for my yoke is easy and my burden is light.

  16. These are the words of Jesus.

  17. Come to me, he said.

  18. And who was it who receives this great invitation?

  19. Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden.

  20. All.

  21. None are excluded from this universal invitation,

  22. this universal call from the lips of the Lord Jesus.

  23. All are invited to come.

  24. All who labor.

  25. All who are heavy laden.

  26. There are probably some here this morning who labor

  27. and are heavy laden.

  28. Some here this morning who would be glad to have rest

  29. for their souls.

  30. It could be that you've never responded to this invitation before.

  31. You're living your life for number one.

  32. But that's quickly growing old.

  33. You're tired of running from one thing to another

  34. in pursuit of pleasure and of beautiful things.

  35. You're tired of the feeling of emptiness

  36. and meaninglessness and aimlessness

  37. that gnaws away at your heart,

  38. especially when you're quiet and alone.

  39. Or maybe at some point in the past,

  40. you have turned to Christ.

  41. You've accepted.

  42. You've heard that invitation to come to me

  43. and you've turned to him

  44. and you've come to him.

  45. And there was joy and delight

  46. and refreshment for your souls.

  47. But somehow,

  48. in the months and years that have passed,

  49. old sinful patterns and habits have crept back in.

  50. They've stolen away your sense,

  51. your awareness,

  52. your experience of the peace

  53. and the joy

  54. and the rest in the Lord that you once knew.

  55. Old ways of thinking

  56. and acting and speaking

  57. that quench and grieve

  58. and resist the Holy Spirit

  59. have taken root in your life again

  60. and you feel cut off

  61. from the power

  62. and the presence of the Lord.

  63. Perhaps that's you.

  64. Perhaps you even despair of your salvation

  65. or have come to believe

  66. that now it's all up to you.

  67. You began by grace

  68. but now

  69. you feel like you're dragging yourself

  70. toward the kingdom of heaven

  71. entirely under your own power

  72. and you're not at all sure

  73. that you're going to make it.

  74. You're worn out from the roller coaster

  75. of good days and bad days.

  76. Or perhaps you've been living your life faithfully

  77. as a disciple of the Lord Jesus

  78. in this world

  79. but you're being battered

  80. and bruised

  81. by the blows that inevitably will come.

  82. You've been bereaved

  83. of the ones you love

  84. facing sickness

  85. and trials

  86. of various kinds

  87. tempted

  88. and tested

  89. day after day

  90. by temptation

  91. after temptation

  92. enduring perhaps

  93. the scorn

  94. of this world.

  95. Come to me

  96. all who labor

  97. and are heavy laden

  98. and I will give you rest.

  99. Take my yoke upon you

  100. and learn from me

  101. for I am gentle

  102. and lowly in heart

  103. and you will find rest

  104. for your souls.

  105. This is the invitation

  106. of the Lord Jesus

  107. given to all

  108. and it's given to you.

  109. And it is this same invitation

  110. that is at the heart

  111. of the fourth commandment

  112. that we had read this morning.

  113. Remember the Sabbath day

  114. to keep it holy.

  115. Six days you shall labor

  116. and do all your work

  117. but the seventh day

  118. is the Sabbath.

  119. of the Lord your God

  120. in it you shall do

  121. no work

  122. you nor your son

  123. nor your daughter

  124. nor your male servant

  125. nor your female servant

  126. nor your cattle

  127. nor your stranger

  128. who is within your gates.

  129. for the Old Testament

  130. people of Israel

  131. the central thrust

  132. of this commandment

  133. then was that

  134. they were to set aside

  135. one day in seven

  136. the seventh day

  137. as a day of rest.

  138. A day that was set apart

  139. to God

  140. and made holy

  141. and on that day

  142. they were to do

  143. no unnecessary work

  144. not themselves

  145. nor those under

  146. their authority

  147. nor even the animals

  148. that were in their care

  149. the beasts of burden

  150. all were to have

  151. a day of rest.

  152. And God provided

  153. two different reasons

  154. why he gave his people

  155. this rule.

  156. In the two different versions

  157. of the Ten Commandments

  158. you see the two different reasons.

  159. The first

  160. which we didn't have read

  161. is from Exodus chapter 20

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  162. and God points the people

  163. back to the very act

  164. of creation.

  165. He says

  166. in six days

  167. the Lord made the heavens

  168. and the earth

  169. the sea

  170. and all that is in them

  171. and rested the seventh day.

  172. Therefore the Lord

  173. blessed the Sabbath day

  174. and made it holy.

  175. So in a sense

  176. to keep the Sabbath

  177. was for the creature

  178. for human beings

  179. you and me

  180. who have been made

  181. in the image of God

  182. to imitate

  183. the creator.

  184. God established

  185. a precedent

  186. in his great work

  187. of creation

  188. by working for six days

  189. and resting on the seventh.

  190. And he sets an example

  191. in that way

  192. for his people to follow.

  193. But in Deuteronomy

  194. which Jason read

  195. this morning

  196. the reason was different

  197. and surprising

  198. and I wonder

  199. if you noticed

  200. what it was.

  201. in Deuteronomy

  202. the people

  203. were reminded

  204. of the great event

  205. of God rescuing them

  206. from slavery

  207. in Egypt

  208. of bringing them

  209. out of bondage

  210. to become

  211. his own special people.

  212. People to whom

  213. he freely bound himself

  214. by a covenant relationship.

  215. I will be your God

  216. and you will be my people.

  217. I invite you

  218. to turn it open

  219. and take a look

  220. at Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 5 chapter mention

  221. chapter 5.

  222. In your pew Bibles

  223. it's on page 161.

  224. Page 161.

  225. And we'll just look

  226. at verse 15.

  227. He's given the rules

  228. of the Sabbath day

  229. and then in verse 15

  230. he says

  231. God says

  232. and remember

  233. that you were a slave

  234. in the land of Egypt

  235. and that the Lord

  236. your God

  237. brought you out

  238. from there

  239. by a mighty hand

  240. and by an outstretched arm.

  241. Therefore the Lord

  242. your God

  243. commanded you

  244. to keep the Sabbath day.

  245. What's the connection?

  246. you might ask.

  247. How does it logically flow

  248. that the fact

  249. that he rescued

  250. his people

  251. from slavery

  252. and made them

  253. his people

  254. would lead him

  255. to give them

  256. this law

  257. that they are to rest

  258. one day out of seven

  259. on the seventh day.

  260. How does that follow?

  261. Well, in fact

  262. there are some

  263. other surprising things

  264. that the Old Testament

  265. says about the Sabbath.

  266. In fact

  267. there are

  268. for example

  269. there are several passages

  270. that give

  271. an importance

  272. to keeping

  273. the Sabbath

  274. that seems

  275. entirely out of proportion

  276. with the nature

  277. of the commandment.

  278. It's sometimes

  279. implied that the Sabbath

  280. is in some way

  281. above

  282. or apart

  283. from the rest

  284. of the law.

  285. For example

  286. in Nehemiah

  287. it's written

  288. you made known

  289. to our fathers

  290. your holy Sabbath

  291. and commanded them

  292. precepts,

  293. statutes,

  294. and laws.

  295. You made known

  296. your Sabbath

  297. and

  298. all these other laws.

  299. and you also

  300. come across

  301. certain passages

  302. that give you

  303. the impression

  304. that if you

  305. fail to keep

  306. the Sabbath

  307. regardless

  308. of what else

  309. might happen

  310. in your life

  311. you overturn

  312. your entire

  313. relationship

  314. with God.

  315. Listen to what

  316. God says

  317. through the prophet

  318. Jeremiah

  319. but if you

  320. do not

  321. listen to me

  322. to keep

  323. the Sabbath

  324. day holy

  325. such as

  326. not carrying

  327. a burden

  328. when entering

  329. the gates

  330. of Jerusalem

  331. on the Sabbath

  332. day

  333. then I will

  334. kindle a fire

  335. in its gates

  336. and it shall

  337. devour

  338. the palaces

  339. of Jerusalem

  340. and it shall

  341. not be quenched.

  342. Does that

  343. surprise you?

  344. Does that

  345. seem maybe

  346. a bit

  347. excessive

  348. or over

  349. the top

  350. or even

  351. arbitrary?

  352. I mean we

  353. might understand

  354. that God

  355. would say

  356. something like

  357. that for

  358. example about

  359. murder.

  360. You can say

  361. and do what

  362. you will

  363. but if you

  364. murder an

  365. innocent person

  366. our relationship

  367. is terminated

  368. and you will

  369. face my

  370. judgment.

  371. And we might

  372. say well I

  373. can understand

  374. that but he

  375. says this about

  376. keeping the

  377. Sabbath.

  378. And far

  379. be it

  380. from me

  381. and from

  382. us to

  383. imply that

  384. God is

  385. in any

  386. way capricious

  387. or arbitrary

  388. or unjust

  389. shall not

  390. the judge

  391. of all the

  392. earth do

  393. right?

  394. Abraham

  395. once asked

  396. and he

  397. shall

  398. indeed.

  399. He is

  400. righteous

  401. in all

  402. his works

  403. and he's

  404. just in

  405. all his

  406. dealings

  407. with people.

  408. So how

  409. then are we

  410. to understand

  411. this great

  412. importance

  413. that he

  414. lays on

  415. the Sabbath

  416. in the

  417. Old Testament?

  418. Well we've

  419. already seen

  420. a pointer

  421. toward the

  422. answer in

  423. that surprising

  424. verse in

  425. Deuteronomy

  426. 15 that

  427. God makes

  428. a connection

  429. between observing

  430. the Sabbath

  431. and the fact

  432. that he

  433. rescued his

  434. people.

  435. But there

  436. are other

  437. passages that

  438. will spell

  439. it out for

  440. us even

  441. more plainly.

  442. So I

  443. invite you

  444. to turn

  445. with me

  446. to a

  447. second

  448. verse

  449. in

  450. Exodus

    Exodus 31 chapter mention

  451. chapter

  452. 31.

  453. It's on

  454. page 76

  455. in your

  456. pew Bible.

  457. Exodus

    Exodus 31 chapter mention

  458. chapter 31

  459. in verse

  460. 13.

  461. We'll just

  462. read,

  463. well I'll

  464. begin at

  465. verse 12.

  466. And the

  467. Lord spoke

  468. to Moses

  469. saying,

  470. Speak also

  471. to the

  472. children of

  473. Israel,

  474. saying,

  475. Surely my

  476. Sabbaths you

  477. shall keep,

  478. for it is a

  479. sign between

  480. me and you

  481. throughout your

  482. generations that

  483. you may know

  484. that I am the

  485. Lord who

  486. sanctifies you.

  487. Amen.

  488. Amen.

  489. Amen.

  490. Amen.

  491. Amen.

  492. Here we have

  493. God explaining

  494. to Moses

  495. why the

  496. Sabbath is so

  497. critical in

  498. his eyes.

  499. He says,

  500. It's a sign

  501. between you

  502. and me

  503. throughout your

  504. generations that

  505. you may know

  506. that I am

  507. the Lord who

  508. sanctifies you.

  509. That is to say,

  510. he is the one

  511. who sets apart

  512. his people for

  513. himself,

  514. who makes them

  515. his own special

  516. people,

  517. devoted to

  518. himself.

  519. And this is

  520. the primary

  521. purpose of

  522. the Sabbath

  523. commandment.

  524. It is to

  525. represent to

  526. God's people

  527. the source

  528. of true

  529. spiritual

  530. rest,

  531. allowing God

  532. and God

  533. alone to

  534. work in

  535. us.

  536. Just as it

  537. was God

  538. alone who

  539. acted to

  540. rescue his

  541. people Israel

  542. out of

  543. Egypt and

  544. they had

  545. nothing to

  546. contribute to

  547. it.

  548. He inflicted

  549. the plagues,

  550. he parted the

  551. sea, he

  552. brought his

  553. people out

  554. and they

  555. simply entered

  556. into what he

  557. had done.

  558. So it is by

  559. God's grace

  560. alone,

  561. by his

  562. powerful work

  563. alone that he

  564. sets us

  565. apart to be

  566. his people.

  567. people.

  568. And so the

  569. Sabbath was

  570. for the

  571. people of

  572. Israel like

  573. a sacrament.

  574. It was a

  575. sign, just

  576. like baptism

  577. is a sign

  578. of being

  579. washed of

  580. sins, of

  581. dying to an

  582. old way of

  583. life, and

  584. being born to

  585. a new life,

  586. a life to

  587. God.

  588. it's an

  589. outward and

  590. visible sign

  591. that communicates

  592. an inward and

  593. spiritual reality.

  594. Just like the

  595. Lord's Supper,

  596. which represents

  597. to us Christ's

  598. death on the

  599. cross as a

  600. sacrifice to

  601. take away our

  602. sins, that we

  603. receive simply

  604. by trusting in

  605. him.

  606. in the same

  607. way, outwardly

  608. observing the

  609. Sabbath

  610. represented an

  611. inward reality,

  612. namely that we

  613. must

  614. put all our

  615. trust, put

  616. away all our

  617. own work, our

  618. sinful practices,

  619. our selfish

  620. interests, the

  621. cares and

  622. concerns of

  623. this life, even

  624. our own efforts

  625. to make

  626. ourselves right

  627. with God.

  628. We put all

  629. that aside so

  630. that we can be

  631. wholly at

  632. rest and allow

  633. God to work

  634. within us, to

  635. cease our

  636. strivings and

  637. to rest our

  638. hearts in

  639. him alone.

  640. The

  641. Sabbath is a

  642. sign to God's

  643. people that God

  644. works in us to

  645. make us his

  646. own, and

  647. that we must

  648. rest in him.

  649. And what's

  650. more, the

  651. Sabbath is a

  652. foreshadowing.

  653. It's a

  654. foreshadowing.

  655. It was a

  656. ceremonial

  657. observance of

  658. a day, but

  659. it pointed to

  660. something beyond

  661. itself that was

  662. far greater.

  663. It pointed to

  664. someone who

  665. was far

  666. greater, the

  667. Lord Jesus

  668. himself.

  669. Jesus is the

  670. true fulfillment

  671. of the

  672. Sabbath.

  673. All that the

  674. Sabbath signified

  675. is represented

  676. in him, because

  677. it's only when we

  678. despair of all

  679. our own ways of

  680. making ourselves

  681. right with God,

  682. it's only when we

  683. come to know that

  684. on our own, we

  685. are sinful

  686. people, and

  687. we're guilty

  688. before a holy

  689. God.

  690. When we answer

  691. Jesus' invitation

  692. to come to

  693. me, all who

  694. labor and are

  695. heavy laden, and

  696. I will give you

  697. rest, when we

  698. cast ourselves on

  699. the mercy of the

  700. Savior alone,

  701. that's when we

  702. become God's

  703. people.

  704. That's when we

  705. are sanctified,

  706. when we are set

  707. apart as his

  708. people for

  709. himself.

  710. So when we

  711. look to the

  712. cross, and

  713. when we hear

  714. Jesus' words

  715. from the cross,

  716. it is finished.

  717. We know that

  718. all that was

  719. necessary for

  720. us to make

  721. ourselves right

  722. with him is

  723. finished, and

  724. we trust in his

  725. finished work as

  726. our only hope.

  727. We contribute

  728. nothing of our

  729. own to making

  730. ourselves right

  731. with God, just

  732. as Israel

  733. contributed nothing

  734. to making

  735. themselves free

  736. of bondage and

  737. slavery.

  738. It is God who

  739. works in us.

  740. It's God who

  741. touches our

  742. hearts and does

  743. a work of

  744. grace, a

  745. miracle, who

  746. gives us a new

  747. heart and a

  748. new beginning and

  749. a new relationship

  750. with him and

  751. with one another.

  752. I'll be your

  753. God, and you

  754. shall be my

  755. people.

  756. This is the

  757. reality to

  758. which the

  759. Sabbath was a

  760. pointer.

  761. character.

  762. This is the

  763. substance of

  764. which the

  765. Sabbath was a

  766. shadow.

  767. And with that, I

  768. ask you to turn

  769. with me to one

  770. final Bible

  771. passage, this

  772. time in the New

  773. Testament.

  774. It's in

  775. Colossians,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  776. chapter 2.

  777. It's on page

  778. 1020 in your

  779. pew Bible.

  780. if you have

  781. your own Bible,

  782. Colossians 2,

  783. 16 and 17.

  784. Therefore, let no

  785. one judge you in

  786. food or in

  787. drink or

  788. regarding a

  789. festival or a

  790. new moon or

  791. Sabbaths, which

  792. are but a

  793. shadow of things

  794. to come, but

  795. the substance is

  796. of Christ.

  797. Now that

  798. Christ has

  799. come, the

  800. ceremonial

  801. Sabbath has

  802. been done away

  803. with.

  804. What need is

  805. there for

  806. shadows when

  807. the substance

  808. is here?

  809. Jesus is the

  810. true fulfillment

  811. of the

  812. Sabbath, and

  813. in his presence

  814. all the shadows

  815. are left far

  816. behind.

  817. So does this

  818. mean that now

  819. there are only

  820. nine commandments

  821. that as

  822. Christians we

  823. no longer

  824. observe the

  825. Sabbath?

  826. No, on the

  827. contrary, far

  828. from it.

  829. There are ten

  830. commandments, and

  831. we fulfill them

  832. all, but in the

  833. case of the

  834. Sabbath law, now

  835. that the true

  836. meaning and

  837. application of

  838. the Sabbath, of

  839. this commandment

  840. that God gave

  841. his people

  842. Israel, has

  843. been revealed

  844. in Jesus.

  845. We no longer

  846. observe it in

  847. the way that the

  848. people of Israel

  849. did under the

  850. Old Testament.

  851. For us, the

  852. reality of the

  853. Sabbath is not

  854. confined to

  855. one day in

  856. seven, but it

  857. is our everyday

  858. lived experience.

  859. It has become

  860. our everyday

  861. life.

  862. Sabbath.

  863. The Sabbath now

  864. extends through

  865. the whole course

  866. of our life, and

  867. it shall be

  868. completely fulfilled

  869. and perfected in

  870. that day of the

  871. Lord when Jesus

  872. will return, and

  873. we will fully and

  874. finally enter into

  875. and experience the

  876. rest of our souls,

  877. the rest from our

  878. labors in him.

  879. As it says in the

  880. letter to the

  881. Hebrews, there

  882. remains a Sabbath

  883. rest for the people

  884. of God.

  885. And so until

  886. then, we do keep

  887. the Sabbath.

  888. We keep the

  889. Sabbath by daily

  890. reminding ourselves

  891. of Christ's

  892. finished work on

  893. the cross.

  894. We keep the

  895. Sabbath by clinging

  896. day by day to

  897. Christ alone as

  898. the basis for our

  899. being God's

  900. people.

  901. people rescued

  902. from slavery, not

  903. to Egypt, but to

  904. sin.

  905. And we keep the

  906. Sabbath by day by

  907. day setting our

  908. minds on the

  909. goal, on the

  910. ultimate fulfillment

  911. of the Sabbath, and

  912. the rest for our

  913. souls that we will

  914. enter into in its

  915. final consummation.

  916. These are the ways

  917. that we as

  918. followers of Christ

  919. observe the

  920. Sabbath law today.

  921. And let me

  922. suggest to you that

  923. we need to be

  924. careful how we

  925. think about what

  926. we do on Sunday,

  927. the Lord's day,

  928. the first day of

  929. the week.

  930. It's important that

  931. we do not regard

  932. the Lord's day as

  933. identical to the

  934. Old Testament

  935. Sabbath that has

  936. merely been

  937. transferred from

  938. the seventh day to

  939. the first day of

  940. the week.

  941. week.

  942. This may be

  943. different from what

  944. you have heard or

  945. read in some books

  946. or sermons, I'll

  947. grant you.

  948. But let me state

  949. again, we must not

  950. regard the Lord's

  951. day, Sunday, as

  952. simply the Old

  953. Testament Sabbath that

  954. has been transferred

  955. to the first day of

  956. the week.

  957. There is simply no

  958. New Testament

  959. basis for this

  960. type of thinking

  961. about the Lord's

  962. day.

  963. There are

  964. plausible arguments

  965. that you might

  966. hear for doing

  967. this, but there is

  968. not a single

  969. verse of direct

  970. biblical basis for

  971. doing it.

  972. Now, with your

  973. goodwill, I don't

  974. know what you're

  975. thinking right now,

  976. but with your

  977. goodwill, let me

  978. make two points

  979. about this before

  980. we conclude, if

  981. you'll hear me

  982. out.

  983. because firstly,

  984. although the

  985. central purpose of

  986. the Sabbath, as

  987. we've seen, was to

  988. signify spiritual

  989. rest to the people

  990. of God, there are

  991. two other significant

  992. purposes as well, why

  993. God instituted the

  994. Sabbath.

  995. And one was that it

  996. was a day to

  997. assemble, a day to

  998. gather together as

  999. God's people, to

  1000. hear his word

  1001. written, to offer

  1002. sacrifices to him,

  1003. perhaps, to meet

  1004. with others of

  1005. God's people in a

  1006. holy assembly.

  1007. And this dimension

  1008. of the Sabbath law

1009. does not need to be

  1010. relegated as a

  1011. shadow to distant

  1012. times past, but it

  1013. can be carried over

1014. into the age of the

  1015. church with minimal

  1016. change.

  1017. It remains necessary

  1018. for the good order

1019. of the church that we

  1020. meet together, that

  1021. we not forsake

  1022. gathering to meet

  1023. together for the

  1024. hearing of the word,

  1025. for the breaking of

  1026. bread, and for

  1027. the prayers.

  1028. And from the

  1029. earliest days of

  1030. the church, the

  1031. major day that has

  1032. been set aside for

  1033. this has been

  1034. Sunday, the

  1035. Lord's Day.

  1036. I suggest that

  1037. that's probably to

  1038. avoid the Sabbath

  1039. associations if

  1040. they'd continue to

  1041. meet on the

  1042. seventh day, as

  1043. well as to

  1044. commemorate the

  1045. day of the

  1046. Lord's resurrection.

  1047. And so that's

  1048. the pattern in

  1049. this church.

  1050. And in virtually

  1051. all the churches

  1052. of the world, they

  1053. meet together on

  1054. Sunday.

  1055. Now, if you

  1056. desire and

  1057. you're able to

  1058. set aside the

  1059. entire Lord's

  1060. Day for spiritual

  1061. purposes, to

  1062. pray and to

  1063. read and to

  1064. meditate on God's

  1065. word and to

  1066. enjoy fellowship

  1067. with other

  1068. believers, you

  1069. are most free to

  1070. do so.

  1071. And I don't

  1072. doubt that it

  1073. would be much to

  1074. the health of

  1075. your souls if

  1076. you did that, to

  1077. celebrate the

  1078. Lord's Day in

  1079. that way.

  1080. But, as the

  1081. Apostle Paul says

  1082. in Romans chapter

    Romans 14 chapter mention

  1083. 14, one person

  1084. esteems one day as

  1085. better than another,

  1086. while another

  1087. esteems all days

  1088. alike.

  1089. Each one should be

  1090. fully convinced in

  1091. his own mind.

  1092. The one who

  1093. observes the day

  1094. observes it in

  1095. honor of the

  1096. Lord.

  1097. And for the

  1098. rest of you who

  1099. do not follow such

  1100. a practice of the

  1101. Lord's Day, well,

1102. I put it to you that

  1103. you should do

  1104. everything in your

  1105. power to avoid

  1106. having to work on

  1107. Sunday morning so

  1108. that you can gather

  1109. with your brothers

  1110. and sisters in

  1111. Christ as the

  1112. people of God.

1113. But we lay on you

  1114. no greater burden

  1115. than this.

  1116. And no one

  1117. ought to think

  1118. that the first

  1119. day of the week

  1120. is inherently

  1121. in some way

  1122. mystical or

  1123. holy, or that

  1124. by doing some

  1125. sort of work or

  1126. other activity,

  1127. you or someone

  1128. else is committing

  1129. a sin against

  1130. God.

  1131. It's that sort

  1132. of distinction

  1133. of days that

  1134. obscures the

  1135. gospel of

  1136. Christ, the

  1137. glory of Christ

  1138. and the light of

  1139. the gospel that

  1140. we saw in the

  1141. fulfillment of the

  1142. Sabbath in him.

  1143. It was this kind

  1144. of thinking that

  1145. led Paul to tell

  1146. the Galatians that

  1147. he was afraid he

  1148. might have labored

  1149. over them in vain,

  1150. for they still

  1151. observed the

  1152. days.

  1153. Secondly, then,

  1154. in addition to a

  1155. day to gather,

  1156. the Sabbath was

  1157. also given as a

  1158. day of physical

  1159. rest.

  1160. Simply that.

  1161. And here also we

  1162. see God's special

  1163. care for the

  1164. powerless, for the

  1165. people who don't

  1166. have a voice, for

  1167. the weak in

  1168. society.

  1169. Because he's

  1170. explicit in the

  1171. Sabbath that it

  1172. applies no less to

  1173. the servants, no

  1174. less to the alien,

  1175. no less to the

  1176. refugee seeking

  1177. shelter than it

  1178. does to the

  1179. master.

  1180. Even the animals

1181. are to be given a

  1182. day of rest.

  1183. So simply, it's not

  1184. good.

  1185. It's not good for

  1186. you to work seven

  1187. days out of seven,

  1188. week in and week

  1189. out.

  1190. There's probably

  1191. some among you who

  1192. have done that,

  1193. maybe for years, and

  1194. you know that it's

  1195. hard on you.

  1196. But it's even worse

  1197. for you to force

  1198. those who are under

  1199. your authority to

  1200. work without rest.

  1201. It's far better to

  1202. follow the creator's

  1203. pattern, to work

  1204. six and rest one.

  1205. And you must not

  1206. inhumanly oppress

  1207. those who are under

  1208. you.

1209. And so to sum up,

  1210. the Sabbath law was

  1211. given to the people

  1212. of Israel as a

  1213. shadow, as a sign.

  1214. But the truth has

  1215. now been set before

  1216. us without shadows,

  1217. in the person of

  1218. Jesus Christ.

1219. And so we are to

  1220. meditate throughout

  1221. life upon this

  1222. everlasting Sabbath

  1223. rest for our

  1224. souls, that the

  1225. Lord may work in

  1226. us through his

  1227. spirit.

  1228. Come to me, all

  1229. who labor and are

  1230. heavy laden, and I

  1231. will give you rest.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Amen.

  1235. Thank you.
