  1. If you want to have a lot of policemen follow you around in Central,

  2. in IFC you carry a big green bag with me written on it.

  3. And you have somebody follow you with a video camera.

  4. I guarantee you, you'll have a lot of people follow you.

  5. You know, we all kind of carry stuff on our journey.

  6. We're all carrying stuff.

  7. We talk about it often when we're on journeys.

  8. And we have this baggage that we carry with us.

  9. Sometimes we carry stuff that is harmful.

  10. We think it's good.

  11. We think it brings life.

  12. But we grab onto it like it's going to give us all that we need.

  13. But it actually ends up killing us.

  14. And so we're packing for these journeys.

  15. And I think some of us right here are packing right now, right?

  16. Some of us are about to go on these journeys.

  17. And some of us are leaving Hong Kong for good.

  18. And some of us are going on vacations.

  19. And we're packing all our stuff, everything we think we need, everything we think that's vital.

  20. And I got to confess to you guys, man, I just, I hate packing.

  21. And I've been trying to figure out why I hate packing and unpacking.

  22. And I think I realize it's because I'm just terrible at it.

  23. I mean, I'm just terrible at packing stuff.

  24. I always pack more than I need.

  25. And I don't ever use what I bring.

  26. And so we started this thing about four years in our family that before we go on a trip, all of us packed the night before.

  27. And then we all bring our luggage out.

  28. And Christina checks our luggage to make sure that everything is in there that we need.

  29. And, you know, I'm always like, well, I'm going to read 20 books.

  30. And I put 20 books in there.

  31. And she goes, you're only going to read like half a book.

  32. And so she takes 19 books out.

  33. And she's taking stuff out of the kids' stuff.

  34. And, you know, we do this because four years ago we didn't do it.

  35. And four years ago we were going on home leave.

  36. And we figured out that we'd send Christina back with the kiddos two weeks earlier.

  37. And so we packed them up and we took them to the airport.

  38. And, you know, it's always humiliating as a dad, right?

  39. You walk in there and you have, you know, five passports.

  40. And the lady looks at you and she goes, okay, so one adult and four children.

  41. And she looks at you and you're like, yeah, I'm a terrible dad.

  42. You know, I'm sending my wife home with the kids all by herself.

  43. And the lady kind of scorns.

  44. And we kiss and they go off.

  45. And I come home and I'm just, I'm kind of tired.

  46. And we did a lot of packing and traveling and getting there.

  47. So I sit down on the couch and I want to, I want to watch TV, right?

  48. And so we had cleaned the house up because we were leaving and keep the house clean.

  49. And I'm looking all around and I cannot find the remotes at all.

  50. And I'm walking in their house.

  51. I'm looking around.

  52. I'm like, okay, so this is like, you know, we cleaned up.

  53. Where would the kids put the remote?

  54. Where would they put that?

  55. And then I start looking around and the telephones are missing.

  56. I mean, the handheld, and they were like those big ones back then.

  57. They're not this big, right?

  58. They're missing.

  59. So I can't, I can't find anything.

  60. And so I'm walking around for two hours trying to figure out where, where would they put this?

  61. If I was a kid, where would I put this?

  62. I have no idea.

  63. And so finally I just give up and I go to bed.

  64. The morning I wake up and I call Christina because they're in San Francisco.

  65. And I say, hey, how's it going?

  66. And she goes, you never guessed what happened.

  67. And I go, what?

  68. And she goes, well, we're going through customs.

  69. We had, we were pushing the baby stroller and, and you know, and it keeps beeping.

  70. And the guy goes, well, you have anything in there?

  71. No, I promise we took it all out.

  72. There's nothing in there.

  73. Beep, beep, beep.

  74. And so he reaches his hand in, I mean, that little basket thing right behind that holds everything.

  75. He reaches his hand in there and he pulls out the telephone.

  76. But he reaches his hand in there and he pulls out the remote controls.

  77. And so my kids, you know, they figured, well, these are important things.

  78. We use them every day.

  79. So we need to carry them with us wherever we go because we never know where we're not going to need them

  80. or where we're going to use them.

  81. And, you know, so I'm sitting there listening to that and I'm doing the calculations.

  82. I'm going, okay, so this is two weeks in a house with TVs and electronics without any remote controls.

  83. That, ladies, that's like, that's like the worst thing you can do to a guy.

  84. I mean, that is like, the only thing you can do worse than that is you can put on a dress and you go to your boyfriend or your husband

  85. and say, does this dress make me look fat?

  86. That's the only other thing that you can do worse than that.

  87. But I was walking around there going, okay, so for two weeks I have no control over my life.

  88. But the kids packed everything that they thought was necessary.

  89. They packed everything that they thought was important, everything that they thought they would need.

  90. But they forgot what their dad would need.

  91. And I don't know.

  92. But, you know, it seems like this passage is talking about some of those things to us.

  93. It says that we go on these journeys and we carry stuff with us.

  94. We carry things with us that become burdens.

  95. We carry guilt.

  96. We carry shame.

  97. We carry regret.

  98. We carry condemnation.

  99. We carry hurt.

  100. We carry bodies to sin.

  101. And all of these things that we're carrying in this backpack or a suitcase or however you want to think about it,

  102. they just, they hinder our journey.

  103. And so we're in the book of Romans and we're going to look at the first 11 verses in Romans.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  104. Chapter 8 because we've been going through Romans.

  105. And what I want to look at in this passage here is I want to look at,

  106. Paul's going to talk about two types of journeys we're on.

  107. Two types of people.

  108. There's only two types of journeys we take.

  109. Only two types of people, two types of mindsets.

  110. So I want to look at those two people.

  111. I want to look at the things that we bring with us in the journey.

  112. And then I want to look at the things that we shouldn't bring.

  113. And so two people, two journeys, the things we bring and the things we shouldn't bring.

  114. Does that make sense?

  115. So hopefully we'll kind of tie this all up in the end in a bow.

  116. Remember last week, if you were here, we finished up Romans chapter 7.

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  117. And in it, Paul, after going through his life and trying to figure out what does it mean for him to live?

  118. How should he live a life that's pleasing to God?

  119. How can he do it?

  120. And you read in the passage that he used I, I, I, me, me, me.

  121. He used it over 30 times.

  122. And at the end of chapter 7, he cries out, who will set me free from the body of this death?

  123. I mean, he realized that his whole life, he's been trying to live the life on his own power.

  124. He's trying to focus on himself.

  125. And all of a sudden, this thought comes into his head.

  126. And he goes, why am I focusing on myself on this journey?

  127. I should be focusing on Jesus.

  128. We're like that, aren't we?

  129. And sometimes we go on these journeys and we become so tied up in ourselves and in our stuff

  130. and we just focus on our stuff and the next place we need to get.

  131. And we forget about the God who put us there and the God who's leading us and the God who's taking us.

  132. We forget Christ.

  133. We leave him behind.

  134. We carry everything else with us.

  135. When I was growing up, I was trying to understand this idea of the Christian life.

  136. And I know analogies are not perfect.

  137. But this is the way the guy explained it to me.

  138. He was discipling me.

  139. And I know we made fun of, what did we make fun of?

  140. Soccer the other day.

  141. But this is a pure sport.

  142. It's baseball.

  143. And the guy told me this.

  144. He said that when you're up there batting and baseball, so there's a ball and there's a bat and there's a pitcher

  145. and there's bases that you run around.

  146. And if you are focusing on just that first base, you want to get to that first base,

  147. and you're focusing on that first base, you're never going to get there.

  148. The way that you get to first base is you focus on the ball.

  149. And if you focus on the ball, everything's going to work out okay in our life.

  150. And that's the way many of us are.

  151. We focus on other things, and we're looking at the next step, and we're looking at how we're going to get there.

  152. But what Paul says is we need to focus on the person who's taking us there.

  153. Does that make sense?

  154. I mean, it's really simple, but, you know, I forget it all the time.

  155. I find myself going off and focusing on the next thing, but I'm not focusing on the person who's taking me there.

  156. I'm not focusing on Christ.

  157. And so I end up becoming frustrated because things aren't working the way that I want them to do.

  158. And Paul says in this passage here, he says from verses 4 on down, he says there are two types of people.

  159. There are two types of walks that we can take.

  160. There are two types of journeys.

  161. And so everybody here in Watermark today, you are only on one of two journeys.

  162. Paul's been making it really simple through Romans.

  163. He doesn't give like ten choices.

  164. He says there's two choices, this or that, this or that, this or that.

  165. And he says in this passage, we're all here.

  166. We're either on one of two types of journeys.

  167. We're either one of two types of people.

  168. And the first group of people he talks about are those people in verse 5, those in the flesh.

  169. He says they're walking, and the word walk in Greek means to order your life.

  170. And so it means that you're in the center and you've just kind of ordered your,

  171. it's like you go to a new desk and you order your desk around and you make sure that everything works.

  172. You go to a new home and you order your home around so you know where everything is.

  173. He says those people who walk in the flesh, they order their lives around themselves.

  174. Their mindset is of the flesh.

  175. The mindset, the word there means to focus.

  176. They focus on themselves.

  177. Now I don't know what you think of when you hear the word flesh

  178. because often what I think of is the body or I think of sex or I think of skin.

  179. But that's not what Paul is talking about here.

  180. When Paul uses the word flesh, it's even, it's huge.

  181. It means it's very difficult to interpret and translate in English.

  182. Sometimes people say, what's the best translation?

  183. And you know, there's certain words that are just incredibly difficult to translate from Greek to English.

  184. Sometimes it takes like three sentences to get the idea.

  185. And this word flesh is one of these.

  186. But basically what it means is that it's our nature.

  187. It's who we are.

  188. It's our desires.

  189. It's our passions.

  190. It's our self-centeredness.

  191. It's who we are apart from God.

  192. It's who we are apart from spiritual things.

  193. It's us in the center of our world.

  194. And Paul says there are people on this journey and they put their self in the center of their world

  195. that their mind is focused on themselves.

  196. The question he asks and we ask sometimes is what is our mind focused on?

  197. What do we intently think about?

  198. The passage says that whatever those things are, they're going to flash into your head.

  199. And if you're on the journey of the flesh, you're going to think about, ultimately, you're going to think about yourself.

  200. You're going to put yourself in the middle.

  201. You're going to think about what's going on there.

  202. And Paul in verse 7, he says that this will always lead to hostility with God.

  203. The word there actually means like fighting and anger and war.

  204. And so the people who are on the journey, they of the flesh, they put themselves in the center of their journey,

  205. the center of their world.

  206. And he says in verse 6, if you do that, verse 7, you're always going to be at hostility with God.

  207. The word there is condemnation.

  208. We're going to talk about that a little later.

  209. And in verse 6, he says, if you walk in the flesh, you're ultimately going to lead to death.

  210. If you walk in the flesh, you're ultimately going to lead to death.

  211. It's a spiritual death and it's a physical death.

  212. Fleshy people live independently of God.

  213. They depend upon themselves.

  214. They want control of their lives.

  215. Romans says that they're the people who want to save themselves.

  216. They know what they need.

  217. They know how to get it.

  218. And the religion is Tobin.

  219. Or themselves.

  220. Those are the people on the journey of the flesh.

  221. One author said it this way that I thought was really interesting.

  222. He said, your religion is what you do with your free time.

  223. Your religion is what you do with your free time.

  224. Whatever your mind goes to naturally, whatever your mind goes to freely,

  225. this is what you really live for.

  226. Whatever your mind goes to naturally, whatever your mind goes to freely,

  227. when you're not inundated by a billion things, whatever your mind goes to,

  228. this is what you really live for.

  229. This is what shapes your journey.

  230. This is what causes you to put the bag and the stuff into your bag.

  231. You can carry it with you.

  232. This is what your mind is set upon.

  233. What is your mind?

  234. So one of the questions we have to ask ourselves is,

  235. what is our mind set upon?

  236. What preoccupies you?

  237. When you have free time, what pops into your head?

  238. What are the things that keep going over and over and over and you're worried about?

  239. What are those things that preoccupy your mind?

  240. And Paul says, whatever those things are, you are a flesh person.

  241. Your mind is set on the flesh and you're journeying with you in the center of your world.

  242. And ultimately, you're always going to come in conflict with God

  243. and you're going to end up getting in trouble.

  244. So what is it that we focused on?

  245. Paul says there's a second person, a second journey, a second people going on this journey,

  246. a second mindset, and it begins in verse 9.

  247. You can look at it.

  248. He's talking to Christians.

  249. Remember, he's been talking to Christians in Romans.

  250. He says, however, you're not in the flesh, but you're in the spirit.

  251. If, and the word there means since, since indeed the spirit of God dwells in you.

  252. But if anyone doesn't have the spirit of Christ, he does not belong to God.

  253. These people he calls, these are the people who are on the spiritual journey.

  254. Their mindset is on the spirit.

  255. The word there again is, the spirit actually just means God.

  256. Their mindset is on God.

  257. God is at the center of their world and they've ordered their life around God and his word.

  258. And those are the people on the spiritual journey.

  259. Remember, there's only two types, fleshy, spiritual, self, God.

  260. Now, the spiritual person, and I've struggled with this for a long time trying to figure out

  261. what does a spiritual person look like?

  262. Because I grew up in a church where you had super spiritual people.

  263. I mean, they were just the people who quoted Bible every time they talked

  264. and their head was in the sky and they tripped over things

  265. and they were just too worried about thinking God thoughts instead of thinking people thoughts.

  266. And they were too busy reading their Bible and praying to be engaged with people.

  267. And that's not what Paul is talking about at all.

  268. That's not a spiritual person.

  269. I mean, if that's true, then the Pharisees were the most spiritual people in the New Testament.

  270. And the Pharisees were the people that Jesus went after over and over and over

  271. because they were whitewashed tombs.

  272. Outwardly they looked perfect, but inwardly they were dead.

  273. And what Paul says here is to have your mind focused on God,

  274. to be spiritual means just to think of Him.

  275. To think of grace.

  276. To think of the cross.

  277. To think of community.

  278. To think of His creation.

  279. To think of people made in His image.

  280. I mean, to have your mind set on the Spirit,

  281. it just means to live in a way that you want to honor God.

  282. Live in a way that you want to honor God.

  283. Live in a way that you want to make God's name great.

  284. Whose name do you make great?

  285. I mean, my experience in my life, and I'm just talking for Tobin,

  286. is that either I'm making God great,

  287. or I'm trying to make myself great.

  288. Who are you trying to make great today?

  289. What does it mean for you to walk with the Lord?

  290. Now, what does this look like at work?

  291. Well, it might look like different things for different people,

  292. but I think what it really means is just this.

  293. You're walking into your work,

  294. and you just have this thought come into your mind.

  295. Okay, God, you put me here.

  296. You've given me gifts.

  297. You've given me talents.

  298. How can I make your name great today?

  299. How can I honor you?

  300. It might mean you just say,

  301. God, I want to honor you today.

  302. Show me how to do that.

  303. Show me how I can obey you.

  304. It's not this huge thing where you say,

  305. great job, and you go, praise the Lord.

  306. God made me do it, and God is all great.

  307. It might mean you just say,

  308. I had a great team around me.

  309. And you're taking the focus off of yourself,

  310. which fleshy people do.

  311. And you're putting your focus on other things.

  312. So what does it look like for us on this journey?

  313. What?

  314. And everybody's really quiet here.

  315. Because I have to ask myself this all the time, guys.

  316. What journey are we on?

  317. are we living for ourselves let's be honest

  318. are we living for christ and paul says in this passage that there's only two journeys there's

  319. not a third journey there's not a journey for super spiritual person and then for non-spiritual

  320. people he basically just says you're either walking in the flesh or you're walking in the

  321. spirit and there's just no dividing those things that's the journeys the next thing that paul says

  322. in this passage is this he says no matter which journey you're on no matter whether you're walking

  323. in the flesh or whether you're walking in the spirit everyone everyone is going to struggle

  324. with two things in our lives we're going to struggle with the idea of being condemned and unworthy before

  325. a holy god and we're going to struggle with the reality of sin which indwells in us and we struggle

  326. with that thing and paul talked about that we're going to struggle with the idea of coming before

  327. the lord that's a holy god and realizing we're not holy and that we're condemned and we're going to

  328. struggle with the idea that we walk around and we do the things that we don't want to do

  329. paul says everyone's going to struggle with that the spiritual people the people on a spiritual

  330. journey they're going to struggle with that right now here and now the people who are of the flesh

  331. we're told that they're going to struggle with that later when they come before the lord

  332. but if you're spiritual and you're on that journey you know what i'm talking about

  333. i mean you know that the minute you fail it the minute you um i i think of sin is when we love

  334. something more than we love god and the minute you love something or someone more than you love god

  335. the bible says that we sin and all of a sudden this little voice comes in the back of my head

  336. and it says things like wow when you call yourself a christian

  337. wow you're a pastor and you did that you must not be a very good pastor

  338. or you must not be a very good christian sometimes there's a big voice

  339. and i make a mistake or we make a mistake in front of people

  340. instead of that voice in our head talking sometimes there's people around us and they say

  341. man shame on you

  342. how could you do that i can't believe you did that

  343. you know in this chapter here paul has the best news for us

  344. he has the best news for those of us on a spiritual journey look at verse 4 1 look at what he says and

  345. we're going to walk our way through it and then i'm going to give you some application points

  346. number one verse 1 therefore therefore remember all the things we've talked about before remember all

  347. the things we've talked about in romans remember jesus remember the cross remember making being made

  348. right remember justification remember grace therefore remember everything that's come before

  349. remember that there is now it hasn't always been this way it's just this way now since we gave our

  350. life to christ there is now we've changed our journeys we're living differently we're going on a different

  351. journey there is now no in greek it would be sound no i mean it was the strongest word you could use

  352. and we again we can't translate that in english it was actually at the beginning of the sentence so it had

  353. this incredible amount of strength that meant it's not possible there's no way not at all not one not a

  354. chance there's no way therefore there is now no condemnation it's a legal term it basically means in law

  355. terms it means to be pronounced guilty and then have your sentence taken out i think i scared her when i yelled no

  356. condemnation condemnation there's actually two greek words together the greek words mean down and judge

  357. so literally in greek the condemnation word means to judge down and so the idea was this caesar's sitting

  358. on his throne and all the prisoners came in before him or all the people with the different cases and

  359. problems came in before him and he heard their cases and caesar after hearing their cases above them

  360. he either judged up

  361. or he judged down

  362. he either said judged up great or he either condemned them so this is the word there is therefore now

  363. no condemnation for those of us

  364. who are in christ jesus

  365. remember we've been talking and romans says

  366. that you and i deserve

  367. to be condemned

  368. there's nothing good within us

  369. we've done nothing to deserve

  370. god's gift

  371. none of us are righteous not one all of us are broken romans 3

  372. and what he says here is that yes you deserve to be judged down

  373. but god sent his son

  374. god sent his son in the likeness of our flesh verse 3

  375. it means that he was just like us

  376. but without sin

  377. god sent his son

  378. verse 4 so that he could fulfill all the requirements of the law

  379. what's the requirement of the law

  380. obedience

  381. perfection

  382. and the passage says that you and i cannot do it

  383. because we have this sinful nature in us

  384. we have this indwelling sin

  385. and this thing that was meant to be good

  386. this law that was meant to save us

  387. we were meant to give it and say okay now i know what god's like

  388. now i know how to walk with god

  389. when we got this law

  390. the sin in us

  391. came out

  392. and it made us even worse

  393. you ever had that experience

  394. you're driving on the highway

  395. you see the sign that says 40 miles an hour

  396. and you know wow this is the longest stretch in hong kong

  397. you should at least be able to go 60 miles an hour on this

  398. only 40 miles an hour

  399. that's terrible

  400. and this law that was good

  401. comes into you in our sinfulness

  402. makes us disobeyed

  403. now if you ever repeat this

  404. i'm going to deny it

  405. totally

  406. but the way i first saw this in my life was

  407. or in somebody's life

  408. we used to go to the beach

  409. on the summers

  410. we used to go to

  411. to grand bay

  412. and fort morgan

  413. and there was this brand new

  414. and at that time there was nothing

  415. just beach houses

  416. just so people lived on the beaches

  417. or we slept on the beach

  418. and all of a sudden this really nice hotel

  419. got built in it

  420. and it was right on the waterfront

  421. it was incredible

  422. and so we went down there for a year

  423. and we vacationed with my friends

  424. it was really really good

  425. and stayed there

  426. we'd go out and play

  427. the next summer we came back

  428. you know what

  429. we walked into the same room

  430. and there was a sign

  431. it said do not fish

  432. off of this balcony

  433. you know i never thought about fishing that way before

  434. i never thought wow what a great thing

  435. we could turn the air conditioning on

  436. we could just throw our poles out there

  437. when it was right in the water

  438. we can go fishing

  439. i never thought about that

  440. how dumb am i

  441. but this sign

  442. this sign

  443. just kind of

  444. made me do it

  445. all of a sudden we get this knocking at the door

  446. they said

  447. excuse me

  448. but people are eating down on the second floor

  449. and they see these fish

  450. being pulled up

  451. up the windows

  452. can you please stop that

  453. it's not my fault

  454. the sign

  455. i've been here before

  456. i would have never done that

  457. but the sign made me do it

  458. that's what paul's saying here

  459. you know what happened

  460. the next year we came back

  461. we came back next year

  462. guess what happened

  463. there was no sign

  464. they took him out of the rooms

  465. because i knew if they put the sign there

  466. people are going to fish

  467. but they don't

  468. put the sign there

  469. people aren't going to even think about that

  470. and what paul is saying here

  471. is that on this journey

  472. we're going to struggle

  473. with this thing called the law

  474. because we are sinful

  475. but god brings his son

  476. and his son fulfills everything

  477. so that when god sees us

  478. he judges up

  479. in the passage says

  480. he judges up

  481. because he judged jesus

  482. down

  483. he judges up

  484. we're not condemned

  485. but he judges down

  486. you know the problem

  487. with being on a spiritual journey

  488. we forget that

  489. we struggle with that

  490. we want to please the lord

  491. we want to do the right thing

  492. but we forget it

  493. and verse 11 says

  494. and so that you don't forget it

  495. i've given you my spirit

  496. and this spirit is going to be inside of you

  497. it's going to dwell in you

  498. and so the spirit is going to talk to you

  499. and know that you're my child

  500. don't forget that you're not condemned

  501. don't forget that you're judged up

  502. don't ever think of yourself judged down

  503. but the passage says

  504. on this journey

  505. we forget that

  506. and we struggle with that

  507. and like the video

  508. we carry these big bags

  509. full of shame

  510. and guilt

  511. and hurt

  512. and Paul is yelling at us

  513. no

  514. no

  515. no

  516. followers of Christ

  517. because all those things

  518. have been taken away

  519. some of us are going to leave here today

  520. and the minute we walk out that door

  521. we're going to have all these thoughts

  522. enter into our head

  523. and they're going to be thoughts like this

  524. because these thoughts are going to come from an enemy

  525. and this enemy doesn't want you to walk

  526. the way that God wants you to walk

  527. he doesn't want you to walk in the spirit

  528. and freedom

  529. he wants you to be in bondage

  530. he wants you to be in condemnation

  531. and the thoughts are going to be something like this

  532. we're going to find ourselves

  533. not living the way we expect ourselves to live

  534. we're going to look at other people around us

  535. and this voice is going to say to us

  536. man look at them

  537. they got their life together

  538. man look at them

  539. they got their family together

  540. man how come you're not a Christian like them

  541. and all of a sudden you're going to feel guilt

  542. and shame

  543. and frustration

  544. and what does Paul say?

  545. verse 1

  546. what's he say?

  547. there is therefore now no condemnation

  548. for those who are in Christ Jesus

  549. some of us are going to walk out of here

  550. and we're going to start thinking

  551. that God must be really angry with me

  552. because things aren't going the way

  553. that I expect him to do

  554. I haven't gotten married yet

  555. or my kids are crazy

  556. or I haven't had kids yet

  557. or my husband or my wife is not understanding me

  558. or my job is terrible

  559. or my boss is

  560. and God must be really, really angry with me

  561. he's getting at me

  562. because of all the past failures I had

  563. he's punishing me

  564. because all the mistakes I've made

  565. and all the times I've blown it

  566. I don't know if you have those voices come in

  567. but I have those voices come in

  568. what does Paul say?

  569. oh come on guys

  570. this is the second time

  571. what does he say?

  572. well I didn't hear that

  573. what?

  574. okay

  575. that's okay

  576. some of us are going to walk out of here

  577. and we're feeling like we're a failure

  578. our relationships are falling apart

  579. no one really cares about us

  580. the people that we thought were our friends

  581. have stabbed us in the back

  582. they've destroyed our reputation

  583. we feel totally unworthy

  584. we feel like we deserve it

  585. maybe we picked the wrong friends

  586. maybe we weren't good enough

  587. maybe we just didn't trust God enough

  588. and what's Paul say?

  589. you gotta get this down

  590. because you're gonna walk out there

  591. and it's gonna happen

  592. there is therefore now no condemnation

  593. for those who are in Christ Jesus

  594. no, none, not ever

  595. you're not ever judged down

  596. you're always judged up

  597. why aren't we ever judged down?

  598. because Jesus was judged down

  599. don't ever forget that

  600. Jesus was judged down for you

  601. so that when God looks at us

  602. He can judge us

  603. some of us are gonna walk out of here

  604. and we are gonna have somebody

  605. we care about deeply

  606. we're gonna have somebody

  607. that we love incredibly

  608. it might be a good friend

  609. it might be a spouse

  610. it might be our parents

  611. and they're gonna look at us

  612. and say you are a failure

  613. didn't I tell you

  614. this was gonna happen?

  615. I can't believe

  616. you're such a disobedient kid

  617. I can't believe

  618. you don't care about me

  619. more than you should

  620. I can't believe

  621. you missed this birthday

  622. or this vacation

  623. I can't believe

  624. you did this

  625. you are worthless

  626. you're worthless

  627. what's Paul saying?

  628. you guys are getting it

  629. kind of right?

  630. there is therefore now

  631. no condemnation

  632. for those who are in Christ Jesus

  633. some of us grew up

  634. in religious homes

  635. or religious schools

  636. and growing up

  637. in these religious homes

  638. and these religious schools

  639. caused us to carry

  640. an incredible amount of shame

  641. guilt

  642. conviction

  643. about ourselves

  644. about our families

  645. about things we've done

  646. the things we shouldn't have done

  647. and we walk around

  648. always in guilt

  649. and we hear messages

  650. like today

  651. and we go

  652. yeah sure

  653. not for me

  654. God would never say that

  655. for me

  656. I'm a bad person

  657. what's Paul saying?

  658. there's therefore now

  659. no condemnation

  660. for those who are in Christ Jesus

  661. finally some of us

  662. are scarred beyond recognition

  663. we've had terrible bosses

  664. terrible relationships

  665. terrible friends

  666. and our self image

  667. is about this small

  668. and when we think of things

  669. we should do

  670. the first thought

  671. comes in our mind

  672. that will never work

  673. because you're not worthy

  674. you failed before

  675. why do you think

  676. we'll succeed this time?

  677. everyone knows

  678. what you're really like

  679. no one wants to be around you

  680. that's why people

  681. don't call you anymore

  682. what does Paul say?

  683. very good

  684. there's therefore now

  685. no condemnation

  686. for those who are in Christ Jesus

  687. the passage says this guys

  688. the passage says

  689. that no matter how much

  690. condemnation we feel

  691. no matter how much

  692. struggle we deal with

  693. as Christians

  694. as people on the

  695. spiritual journey

  696. as people taking the journey

  697. with these backpacks

  698. and things are being

  699. pushing our backs

  700. no matter how bad we feel

  701. no matter if the condemnation

  702. is inwardly

  703. no matter if the condemnation

  704. is outwardly

  705. no matter how strong we feel

  706. no matter how strong we feel

  707. like sin has a hold on us

  708. it doesn't have a hold on us

  709. no matter how shameful we feel

  710. no matter how much sin

  711. has paralyzed us

  712. fear

  713. doubt

  714. guilt

  715. God knows it all

  716. God knows it all

  717. and he put it on Jesus

  718. on a cross

  719. and he judged him down

  720. so he can look at us

  721. and judge us up

  722. does that make sense

  723. as you go on this journey

  724. you have to remember

  725. these things

  726. and the question is

  727. as we carry these things

  728. as we pick up new bricks

  729. as we add bricks to us

  730. and take bricks off

  731. we need to ask ourselves

  732. the questions over and over

  733. are we going to surrender

  734. this to God

  735. are we going to give this to God

  736. do we know that God

  737. has already given this

  738. do we know that God

  739. has judged us up

  740. or do we think that God

  741. has kind of judged us this way

  742. and if we think God

  743. has kind of judged us this way

  744. what we've done is

  745. we've separated ourselves

  746. from the gospel

  747. the gospel is like a train

  748. Jesus the Holy Spirit

  749. is like this engine

  750. and we come alongside

  751. and we click up

  752. but the minute we

  753. allow condemnation

  754. to come into our life

  755. that click is broken

  756. we've de-gospeled ourselves

  757. I don't know

  758. I make up words all the time

  759. but we've de-gospeled ourselves

  760. that's what condemnation does

  761. condemnation comes in

  762. and it de-gospels us

  763. and Paul says

  764. don't allow it to happen

  765. it's going to happen

  766. you're going to be tempted

  767. you're going to walk out here

  768. and you're going to feel these thoughts

  769. it's going to be from your spouse

  770. or your friends

  771. or yourself

  772. and it's going to look at

  773. this past track record

  774. and you're going to say

  775. I'm going to feel these things

  776. you're right

  777. and I'm going to have pity

  778. and the minute we do that

  779. we've lost the power of God

  780. in our life

  781. we've lost the power

  782. of the gospel

  783. I'm going to end

  784. with just two thoughts

  785. three thoughts

  786. four thoughts

  787. first thought

  788. on this passage

  789. as I read this

  790. and I've been praying for this

  791. in our church

  792. over and over

  793. I think that some of us

  794. in here need to be honest

  795. some of us need to be honest

  796. what kind of journey we're on

  797. some of us need to be honest

  798. are we on the journey of the flesh

  799. or are we on the journey of the spirit

  800. I mean some of us

  801. we prayed the prayer

  802. we accepted Christ

  803. yeah we're going to heaven

  804. but our lives

  805. have no change whatsoever

  806. if people were to look at us

  807. they would say

  808. well we're the center of our world

  809. we've put ourself in the middle

  810. we've ordered everything around us

  811. some of us need to be honest with that

  812. and we just say

  813. you know I thought

  814. I was doing that

  815. but you know

  816. I realize it

  817. I don't even know

  818. what it means

  819. to have a relationship with God

  820. maybe this is the time

  821. we need to come clean

  822. and ask people

  823. what that looks like

  824. some of us

  825. we've been walking

  826. in so much shame

  827. and so much guilt

  828. and we just

  829. and we accepted Christ

  830. in our life

  831. but we just feel worthless

  832. and some of us

  833. need to wake up

  834. and say

  835. hey I should say

  836. stop playing God

  837. you're not God

  838. there's only one God

  839. and he's forgiven you

  840. accept it

  841. move on

  842. walk the life

  843. love him

  844. be empowered by his spirit

  845. all of us in here

  846. need to become honest

  847. and we need to come clean

  848. and say

  849. what journey are we on

  850. stop playing around

  851. life is too short

  852. for those of us in here

  853. who are not in Christ

  854. for those of us who say

  855. yeah you know

  856. I'm in the flesh

  857. I'm not in Christ

  858. my prayer is

  859. you need to consider this

  860. you are carrying

  861. this huge load

  862. of baggage

  863. and you're carrying

  864. these things

  865. that are ultimately

  866. going to consume you

  867. condemn you

  868. and destroy you

  869. my question for you

  870. who've been on this

  871. journey of the flesh

  872. are you sure

  873. you want to do that

  874. because there's a God

  875. who loves you

  876. incredibly

  877. and he's giving you

  878. his son

  879. so that you don't

  880. have to be condemned

  881. he's giving you

  882. his son

  883. so you don't have

  884. to carry the baggage

  885. he's giving you

  886. his son

  887. so that he can

  888. judge you up

  889. and not down

  890. will you do that

  891. and there's some

  892. of us in here

  893. who are on this

  894. spiritual journey

  895. but you know

  896. we just don't

  897. check our bags

  898. very often

  899. and we're carrying

  900. all this

  901. can I say it

  902. in church

  903. crap

  904. and some of the

  905. things are going

  906. to kill us

  907. you know

  908. when we did

  909. this exercise

  910. of opening up

  911. the bags

  912. last year

  913. Christina opened

  914. up KK's bag

  915. our seven year old

  916. and she had

  917. actually had

  918. broken glass

  919. that she was

  920. carrying in the bag

  921. broken glass

  922. some of it

  923. fell out on the

  924. floor

  925. Christina didn't

  926. see it

  927. and she stepped

  928. on it

  929. and she sliced

  930. her foot open

  931. that wide

  932. and she had

  933. to go to the

  934. hospital

  935. get stitches

  936. some of us

  937. are carrying

  938. broken glass

  939. and things are

  940. going to hurt

  941. us in our bag

  942. as followers of

  943. Christ

  944. because we

  945. don't check

  946. our bag

  947. and we don't

  948. realize what's

  949. in there

  950. and for some

  951. of us

  952. we need to

  953. check our bags

  954. and have people

  955. around us

  956. check our bags

  957. and ask us

  958. do we understand

  959. the gospel

  960. are we gospeled

  961. up or are we

  962. de-gospeled

  963. because we're on

  964. this journey

  965. and we're carrying

  966. things in us

  967. that we don't

  968. need to be

  969. carrying

  970. and they're

  971. going to

  972. destroy us

  973. but condemnation

  974. embodies the

  975. sin

  976. one last

  977. thought

  978. as we've been

  979. teaching Romans

  980. one of the

  981. things we've

  982. been trying

  983. to get to

  984. you over

  985. and over

  986. and over

  987. Christianity

  988. is so much

  989. different than

  990. every other

  991. religion

  992. I mean some

  993. of the values

  994. are the same

  995. some of the

  996. morals are the

  997. same

  998. you find in

  999. philosophy

  1000. classes

  1001. you go to

  1002. philosophy

  1003. but the

  1004. difference in

  1005. Christianity

  1006. is this

  1007. in Christianity

  1008. it's God

  1009. who always

  1010. acts

  1011. and you and

  1012. I respond

  1013. God acts

  1014. we respond

  1015. Paul's sermons

  1016. and talks

  1017. are always that

  1018. way

  1019. this is what

  1020. God has done

  1021. for you

  1022. this is what

  1023. you need to

  1024. do

  1025. God acts

  1026. you respond

  1027. God acts

  1028. you respond

  1029. God acts

  1030. you respond

  1031. every other

  1032. religion

  1033. every other

  1034. philosophy

  1035. says this

  1036. you do this

  1037. then God

  1038. will do this

  1039. you be this

  1040. way

  1041. and God

  1042. will be this

  1043. way

  1044. you do these

  1045. things

  1046. and God

  1047. will do

  1048. these things

  1049. to you

  1050. and Christianity

  1051. says that's

  1052. not true

  1053. Christianity

  1054. is about

  1055. God

  1056. pursuing

  1057. you

  1058. do you

  1059. know how

  1060. much

  1061. God

  1062. loves

  1063. you

  1064. do you

  1065. know

  1066. how

  1067. crazy

  1068. God

  1069. is

  1070. for you

  1071. in the

  1072. 90s

  1073. I was

  1074. teaching

  1075. English

  1076. in China

  1077. it was

  1078. very interesting

  1079. I'll never

  1080. forget it

  1081. we were in

  1082. class

  1083. and we had

  1084. this discussion

  1085. and the

  1086. discussion

  1087. was about

  1088. the value

  1089. of humans

  1090. and I was

  1091. very careful

  1092. about what

  1093. I was going

  1094. to say

  1095. and I was

  1096. listening

  1097. and listening

  1098. to my

  1099. students

  1100. and listening

  1101. to what

  1102. they're

  1103. saying

  1104. and also

  1105. one of the

  1106. students

  1107. raised his

  1108. hand

  1109. he said

  1110. I think

  1111. that we

  1112. in China

  1113. value people

  1114. so much

  1115. less than

  1116. you in

  1117. the West

  1118. I'm like

  1119. well

  1120. explain

  1121. he goes

  1122. well this

  1123. airplane

  1124. just crashed

  1125. and CAA

  1126. C

  1127. used to

  1128. we were

  1129. living in

  1130. China

  1131. with CAA

  1132. C

  1133. China Airways

  1134. always

  1135. cancels

  1136. or China

  1137. Airways

  1138. always

  1139. crashes

  1140. so they

  1141. changed

  1142. their name

  1143. I don't

  1144. know what

  1145. they call

  1146. them now

  1147. but they

  1148. didn't

  1149. want to

  1150. have

  1151. CAA

  1152. C

  1153. and the

  1154. CAA

  1155. airplane

  1156. had just

  1157. crashed

  1158. and 100

  1159. and something

  1160. people lost

  1161. their lives

  1162. and the

  1163. student said

  1164. to me

  1165. you know

  1166. when people

  1167. die in

  1168. China

  1169. like an

  1170. airplane

  1171. crash

  1172. we give

  1173. them

  1174. a thousand

  1175. US dollars

  1176. that's how

  1177. much a person

  1178. is worth

  1179. 1,000 US dollars

  1180. in China

  1181. but when an

  1182. airplane crashes

  1183. in America

  1184. you guys

  1185. or in the

  1186. west

  1187. you give

  1188. them

  1189. like half

  1190. a million

  1191. dollars

  1192. it's clear

  1193. to me

  1194. that you

  1195. value

  1196. life

  1197. and people

  1198. so much

  1199. more than

  1200. we do

  1201. how much

  1202. does God

  1203. value you

  1204. what did

  1205. God

  1206. pay for

  1207. you

  1208. you know

  1209. I don't

  1210. think we

  1211. realize that

  1212. sometimes

  1213. I think

  1214. if we

  1215. thought about

  1216. that more

  1217. we allowed

  1218. that to

  1219. permeate

  1220. into our

  1221. hearts

  1222. and our

  1223. souls

  1224. it would

  1225. change

  1226. everything

  1227. that we

  1228. do

  1229. it would

  1230. change

  1231. everything

  1232. because God

  1233. loved us

  1234. so much

  1235. he gave

  1236. us

  1237. so we

  1238. might be

  1239. judged up

  1240. because he

  1241. was judged

  1242. down

  1243. we're on

  1244. a journey

  1245. we have

  1246. choices to

  1247. make

  1248. what journey

  1249. are you

  1250. going to

  1251. be on

  1252. what kind

  1253. of love

  1254. you are

  1255. you going

  1256. to carry

  1257. all that

  1258. determines

  1259. your outcome

  1260. and where

  1261. you end

  1262. up

  1263. God

  1264. loves you

  1265. so much

  1266. dedicated

  1267. son

  1268. our prayer

  1269. is that we

  1270. are a

  1271. church

  1272. that thinks

  1273. about that

  1274. often

  1275. and that

  1276. changes us

  1277. in everything

  1278. we do

  1279. father we

  1280. thank you for

  1281. this day

  1282. we thank you

  1283. for your

  1284. mercy

  1285. we thank you

  1286. for your

  1287. grace

  1288. we thank you

  1289. for your

  1290. word

  1291. we thank you

  1292. for your

  1293. son

  1294. who came

  1295. like we

  1296. were

  1297. but without

  1298. sin

  1299. you paid

  1300. the penalty

  1301. that we

  1302. could never

  1303. pay

  1304. because you

  1305. love us

  1306. so much

  1307. I pray

  1308. for us

  1309. I pray

  1310. today

  1311. before we

  1312. leave

  1313. we would

  1314. make a

  1315. decision

  1316. and be

  1317. honest

  1318. and come

  1319. clean

  1320. what journey

  1321. are we on

  1322. are we on

  1323. the journey

  1324. of the flesh

  1325. are we on

  1326. the journey

  1327. of the spirit

  1328. are we on

  1329. a journey

  1330. where you're

  1331. at the

  1332. center of

  1333. our lives

  1334. are we on

  1335. a journey

  1336. where we're

  1337. at the

  1338. center of

  1339. our lives

  1340. and realizing

  1341. it's never

  1342. too late

  1343. to change

  1344. and to turn

  1345. because you

  1346. love us

  1347. so much

  1348. and you're

  1349. the god

  1350. of second

  1351. chances

  1352. father I pray

  1353. for those of

  1354. us who are

  1355. walking

  1356. in the spirit

  1357. on this

  1358. journey

  1359. who have

  1360. guilt

  1361. and shame

  1362. and pain

  1363. and hurt

  1364. all these

  1365. things that

  1366. cloud our

  1367. lives and

  1368. make us

  1369. forget who

  1370. we are

  1371. and whose

  1372. we are

  1373. what journey

  1374. we're on

  1375. I pray for

  1376. us lord

  1377. I pray that

  1378. we would have

  1379. people around

  1380. us who love

  1381. us enough

  1382. to wake

  1383. us up

  1384. I pray that

  1385. we'd always be

  1386. a church that

  1387. would speak

  1388. the truth

  1389. of your word

  1390. and not

  1391. flower coat

  1392. things that

  1393. make people

  1394. feel good

  1395. about themselves

  1396. but realize

  1397. that we're

  1398. we're

  1399. we're condemned

  1400. but for some

  1401. reason you

  1402. judge us up

  1403. because you

  1404. condemned your

  1405. son

  1406. father I pray

  1407. we'd be a

  1408. church that

  1409. would help

  1410. each other

  1411. understand the

  1412. gospel and

  1413. stop carrying

  1414. this luggage

  1415. and baggage

  1416. in our lives

  1417. it's killing

  1418. us

  1419. destroying

  1420. us

  1421. it's not

  1422. allowing us

  1423. to be the

  1424. people that

  1425. you've called

  1426. us to be

  1427. help us

  1428. to understand

  1429. your mercy

  1430. and help

  1431. us to

  1432. understand

  1433. your grace

  1434. lord most

  1435. of all I

  1436. pray that we

  1437. would be a

  1438. church

  1439. I pray that

  1440. we would be a

  1441. church that

  1442. never forgot

  1443. what it was

  1444. like before

  1445. we knew

  1446. you

  1447. I pray that

  1448. we would be

  1449. a people who

  1450. never forgot

  1451. what it was

  1452. like to

  1453. walk in the

  1454. flesh and to

  1455. surround their

  1456. world with

  1457. just themselves

  1458. and things that

  1459. mattered for

  1460. them and how

  1461. empty that felt

  1462. and how lonely

  1463. that felt

  1464. and how guilty

  1465. that felt

  1466. and how we

  1467. had to try to

  1468. reinvent things

  1469. just to hide

  1470. those shame

  1471. and all those

  1472. other things

  1473. help us never to

  1474. forget what it

  1475. was like before

  1476. you brought your

  1477. son Jesus into

  1478. our life

  1479. and as we leave

  1480. here today

  1481. realize that 95%

  1482. of the people that

  1483. we're going to run

  1484. into in Hong Kong

  1485. are walking that

  1486. journey of the

  1487. flesh

  1488. and they're

  1489. hurting

  1490. they're

  1491. desperate

  1492. they're

  1493. looking for

  1494. something to

  1495. numb their

  1496. lives and

  1497. their purpose

  1498. and their

  1499. meaning

  1500. help us to

  1501. realize and

  1502. keep our eye

  1503. focused on you

  1504. and what you're

  1505. doing and be a

  1506. part of what

  1507. you're doing

  1508. instead of our

  1509. own agenda

  1510. may we be a

  1511. people who share

  1512. your son with

  1513. everybody

  1514. because we want

  1515. them on the

  1516. journey with us

  1517. father we love

  1518. you

  1519. we need you

  1520. we pray

  1521. in your son

  1522. Jesus name

  1523. amen
