  1. Let's pray as we begin.

  2. Our Father, in your word, you've told us that the Bible is to us a lamp for our feet

  3. and a light for our path, and we thank and praise you for it.

  4. And we pray that you would, by your mercy, open our blind eyes,

  5. that we might see the light that you provide through your word and walk in it

  6. and rejoice in it and love you for it.

  7. Through Christ we ask. Amen.

  8. I have a confession to make.

  9. I have broken the sixth commandment.

  10. You shall not murder.

  11. And it's true.

  12. Now before you wonder too much about what kind of secrets the new assistant pastor has been hiding,

  13. or you're fumbling for your cell phones to make a quick 911 call,

  14. please hear me out.

  15. Because I have failed.

  16. I have even failed repeatedly to fulfill what is required by the sixth commandment.

  17. You shall not murder.

  18. And so have you.

  19. Now it could be that if you've been with us for the past few weeks,

  20. we've been going through the ten commandments together,

  21. you've been looking forward to number six.

  22. You've been thinking, at least this week I'm off the hook.

  23. I know I haven't done that one.

  24. And children, if there are those of you who stayed upstairs during the summer months,

  25. you're probably thinking, well, this commandment doesn't have anything to say to me, right?

  26. I mean, that's, I'm just a kid.

  27. Murder.

  28. Murder.

  29. Maybe I need to think about honoring my father and my mother,

  30. or not cheating on tests at school, or not shoplifting,

  31. not lying, but murder.

  32. That one's for grown-ups for sure.

  33. Well, it's not.

  34. It applies to you kids as well, just as much as to the rest of us.

  35. And not only, as I said, have I broken this commandment, but so have you.

  36. Every one of us in this place this morning has broken this commandment.

  37. And I don't mean according to some weird philosophical argument

  38. that has nothing really to do with what the commandment means

  39. when it says, you shall not murder.

  40. I mean, we have all broken this commandment exactly as the Bible teaches that this commandment means.

  41. And I don't say that you and I have broken this commandment

  42. to wield a weapon of fear and guilt upon you,

  43. to make you feel worse about yourself than you already did when you got up this morning.

  44. That's not my goal.

  45. And it certainly isn't the purpose of God who gave us this commandment

  46. as well as the whole of the Bible.

  47. Because God's primary purpose for us as human beings

  48. is that we should glorify him and enjoy him forever.

  49. That's his purpose for you and it's his purpose for me.

  50. That we should be his people and he should be our God.

  51. That's the idea behind the phrase that we so often see in the Bible,

  52. the kingdom of God or the kingdom of heaven.

  53. God's rule over God's people in God's place.

  54. A beautiful harmony.

  55. But there is a barrier to all of this and it's our sin.

  56. It's our rebellion against God as our ruler.

  57. Our desire to live our lives our own way.

  58. To call our own shots.

  59. To do our own thing.

  60. That's what cuts us off from God.

  61. So it may be actually that understanding that you have broken this commandment

  62. does give you a sense of guilt and of fear.

  63. But if that is the case, put them to the right use.

  64. Don't leave it there.

  65. We surely wouldn't blame someone who in the middle of the night

  66. noticed that our house was on fire

  67. and bursts into our room and shakes us awake and says,

  68. your house is on fire.

  69. Run for your life.

  70. We surely wouldn't say,

  71. when you said that, you made me feel fearful.

  72. You're just using this claim to wield power over me, aren't you?

  73. In fact, on top of that, you're making me feel guilty too

  74. because I'm beginning to remember that I left the stove on before I went to bed.

  75. No, we wouldn't say that.

  76. And it should be the same with this commandment.

  77. So if you do come to realize, as we look at it,

  78. that you have broken it

  79. and you begin to feel guilty and even fearful

  80. if you realize that how far short of God's holy law you have fallen

  81. and that someday you will have to stand before him in judgment.

  82. Don't stop there.

  83. That's not the place to stop.

  84. Let it be to you like the person coming into the burning house

  85. and let it spur you on to be reconciled to God.

  86. Because God has provided a way of escape

  87. in his son Jesus Christ

  88. who died on the cross for our sins

  89. and was raised to life again for our justification.

  90. That is to make us right with God.

  91. There is forgiveness with God

  92. and it's found in his son Jesus Christ.

  93. And all that's required on our part

  94. is to acknowledge our need.

  95. Our need for forgiveness

  96. and to put our trust in him

  97. and to submit to him as Lord.

  98. Seeking from this time onward

  99. no longer to walk according to our own desires

  100. but according to the law of God,

  101. the law of Christ.

  102. And that's to be our daily pattern

  103. for the rest of our lives

  104. as disciples of Jesus Christ.

  105. Reading his word.

  106. Listening to him in his word.

  107. Speaking to him in prayer.

  108. Repenting.

  109. That is turning away from things

  110. when we become aware that we've gone astray

  111. or fallen short.

  112. And trusting in all things continually

  113. in the Lord Jesus alone.

  114. But all of that,

  115. I still haven't shown you how

  116. I have broken the sixth commandment.

  117. Or you have.

  118. So let's take a look together

  119. at what the Bible has to say.

  120. At its most basic level,

  121. the commandment is really quite simple.

  122. It's four words.

  123. You shall not murder.

  124. Two words if you boil it down.

  125. Don't murder.

  126. Murder not.

  127. You shall not kill.

  128. Strike down.

  129. Slay.

  130. Another person.

  131. Another human being.

  132. Now there's other parts of the scripture

  133. that make it abundantly clear

  134. that this commandment

  135. does not refer to capital punishment.

  136. Where it's instituted

  137. by a lawfully appointed judge

  138. according to the rule of the law.

  139. And it doesn't apply to situations of war.

  140. Sometimes it doesn't apply

  141. to situations of self-defense.

  142. But apart from those

  143. special circumstances,

  144. we're not to kill other people.

  145. It's that simple.

  146. But have you ever stopped

  147. to consider why

  148. it's wrong to kill others?

  149. And it may sound crazy to you,

  150. but why can't we kill

  151. the people who irritate us?

  152. Or the people who compete with us

  153. for the plum job

  154. or the spouse that we wanted?

  155. Or why can't we kill the people

  156. that do things to us

  157. that make us desire revenge?

  158. Why is it wrong to murder?

  159. I promised you we'd look at the Bible

  160. and I'm sitting it down again,

  161. but we'll get back to it.

  162. Have you ever also considered

  163. that from a purely materialistic

  164. or naturalistic point of view,

  165. there is no reason

  166. why we shouldn't murder

  167. other human beings?

  168. That is to say,

  169. if this physical universe,

  170. what we can see and observe

  171. with our instruments and our eyes,

  172. is all that there is,

  173. as many people in our society

  174. would claim they believe,

  175. and if life arose entirely

  176. and only because of random collisions

  177. of particles,

  178. which then became more and more complex

  179. as they ascended

  180. and finally we reach

  181. 21st century human beings,

  182. well, on what basis then

  183. would it be wrong

  184. to murder?

  185. We might say,

  186. well, there are social conventions.

  187. It benefits all of society.

  188. It's stable

  189. if we don't just go around

  190. killing each other.

  191. It improves our chances of success

  192. as a species.

  193. But ultimately,

  194. that's not a binding reason

  195. why we ought not to murder.

  196. What if I don't want

  197. our species to succeed?

  198. Or what if we say

  199. that the best personal ethic

  200. somebody could have

  201. is not to hurt others?

  202. That's my inner rule.

  203. I just go around

  204. and I say,

  205. I'm not going to hurt others.

  206. And it sounds very good

  207. and tolerant

  208. and civilized

  209. and all those things.

  210. But what if there's

  211. some devil's advocate

  212. who says,

  213. well, I like to hurt

  214. and kill other people.

  215. What's to say

  216. that your personal ethic

  217. is better than my personal ethic?

  218. Well, of course,

  219. we recoil

  220. at that idea

  221. and you should

  222. because in your conscience

  223. and in your heart of hearts,

  224. you know it's just wrong

  225. to murder innocent people.

  226. It's just wrong.

  227. It's not that it's contrary

  228. to social norms

  229. or inconsistent

  230. with the continuing evolution

  231. of our species

  232. or anything like that.

  233. It's just wrong.

  234. And the Bible tells us why.

  235. So please,

  236. turn with me

  237. to Genesis

    Genesis 9 chapter mention

  238. chapter 9

  239. and verse 6.

  240. If you're using

  241. the Pew Bible,

  242. it's on page 7,

  243. right near the beginning.

  244. Genesis 9

    Genesis 9:6

  245. verse 6.

  246. And it says,

  247. and this is

  248. the words of God,

  249. whoever sheds

  250. man's blood,

  251. by man

  252. his blood

  253. shall be shed.

  254. For in the image

  255. of God

  256. he made man.

  257. For in the image

  258. of God

  259. he made man.

  260. It's because God

  261. made human beings,

  262. male and female,

  263. in his image.

  264. that is something

  265. like himself

  266. that it is wrong

  267. to murder.

  268. And that's why

  269. it's not murder

  270. to swat a mosquito

  271. or to catch a fish

  272. or to eat a hamburger.

  273. That's not murder

  274. because human beings

  275. alone

  276. have been made

  277. in the image of God.

  278. We

  279. resemble God

  280. in certain ways

  281. that the rest of creation

  282. as inherently valuable

  283. and good

  284. as he pronounced

  285. it to be

  286. as inherently valuable

  287. as it is.

  288. It's not made

  289. in the image of God

  290. in the way

  291. human beings are.

  292. We speak.

  293. We use our reason.

  294. We are made

  295. for relationships

  296. with one another.

  297. We exercise dominion

  298. over every other

  299. living thing

  300. on the earth.

  301. We've been made

  302. like God.

  303. His representatives

  304. as it were

  305. on the earth.

  306. earth.

  307. We are images

  308. of him.

  309. And if you imagine

  310. for a moment

  311. that you were to travel

  312. to Castro's Cuba

  313. and you're in Havana

  314. and you see a statue

  315. of the man himself,

  316. of Fidel Castro,

  317. and you smash

  318. it to smithereens,

  319. how do you suppose

  320. the Cuban authorities

  321. would respond

  322. to your gesture?

  323. It would be seen

  324. as a great offense,

  325. profoundly offensive,

  326. an act of

  327. aggressive rebellion

  328. and disrespect

  329. to the ruler

  330. to deface

  331. and destroy

  332. an image of him

  333. in the middle

  334. of his city.

  335. In the same way,

  336. then,

  337. it is that to murder

  338. a human being

  339. who is made,

  340. who is,

  341. the image

  342. of the living God

  343. is to show

  344. the greatest

  345. disrespect

  346. to the God

  347. who made that person

  348. and whose image

  349. he or she

  350. is made in.

  351. It's just as much

  352. a sin against God

  353. as it is against

  354. the human victim.

  355. That,

  356. primarily,

  357. is the biblical reason

  358. why it is sin

  359. to murder.

  360. And so,

  361. we're not

  362. to kill

  363. other people.

  364. And we're certainly

  365. not to kill

  366. the weakest

  367. and the most

  368. vulnerable

  369. members of our society,

  370. those who have

  371. no voice

  372. to speak for themselves.

  373. We're not to kill

  374. the elderly

  375. because they're old

  376. and sick

  377. and forgetful

  378. and they cost

  379. a lot of time

  380. and money.

  381. We're not to kill

  382. the physically

  383. or mentally

  384. disabled

  385. or even those

  386. who are facing

  387. the agony

  388. of a progressive

  389. wasting disease

  390. because we

  391. or even they

  392. themselves

  393. have decided

  394. that they're

  395. living a life

  396. that's simply

  397. not worth living

  398. or that they're

  399. suffering too much

  400. and we're not

  401. to kill

  402. unborn children

  403. because they're

  404. inconvenient

  405. or unwanted

  406. or even

  407. because they

  408. remind us

  409. of a very

  410. painful past.

  411. We're not

  412. to kill

  413. other people.

  414. Period.

  415. God's law

  416. is simple

  417. and it is

  418. clear.

  419. You shall

  420. not murder.

  421. But the

  422. commandment

  423. extends

  424. further than that

  425. because you

  426. could

  427. completely

  428. observe

  429. this law

  430. according to

  431. the outward

  432. behavior

  433. the murder

  434. of the body

  435. and yet you

  436. would still

  437. break it.

  438. That was the

  439. issue with the

  440. Pharisees

  441. in Jesus'

  442. day.

  443. They were

  444. looking for

  445. what was the

  446. minimum

  447. requirement

  448. of the law

  449. so they could

  450. say they had

  451. fulfilled it

  452. and were keeping

  453. it.

  454. But Jesus

  455. rebukes

  456. that way

  457. of thinking.

  458. He shows us

  459. that if we

  460. love God

  461. we must

  462. be seeking

  463. the greatest

  464. the most

  465. extensive

  466. the fullest

  467. and deepest

  468. way

  469. that we can

  470. apply his

  471. laws

  472. to our

  473. lives

  474. not the

  475. least.

  476. And so when it

  477. comes to

  478. murder

  479. Jesus applies

  480. the commandment

  481. to our

  482. hearts

  483. to our

  484. thoughts

  485. and our

  486. attitudes

  487. and our

  488. fantasies.

  489. Turn with

  490. me please

  491. to the

  492. words of

  493. Jesus in

  494. Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  495. chapter 5

  496. in the Pew

  497. Bibles

  498. it's page

  499. 836

  500. 836

  501. Jesus teaching

  502. on this

  503. subject in

  504. Matthew

    Matthew 5:21

  505. chapter 5

  506. verse 21

  507. and following

  508. he said

  509. you've heard

  510. that it was

  511. said to

  512. those of

  513. old

  514. you shall

  515. not murder

  516. and whoever

  517. murders will

  518. be in

  519. danger of

  520. the judgment

  521. but I

  522. say to

  523. you

  524. that whoever

  525. is angry

  526. with his

  527. brother

  528. without a

  529. cause

  530. shall be

  531. in danger

  532. of the

  533. judgment

  534. and whoever

  535. says to

  536. his brother

  537. raka

  538. an insult

  539. shall be

  540. in danger

  541. of the

  542. council

  543. but whoever

  544. says

  545. you fool

  546. shall be

  547. in danger

  548. of hellfire

  549. it's the words

  550. of Jesus

  551. therefore if you

  552. bring your gift

  553. to the altar

  554. and there

  555. remember that

  556. your brother

  557. has something

  558. against you

  559. leave your gift

  560. there before

  561. the altar

  562. and go

  563. your way

  564. first be

  565. reconciled

  566. to your

  567. brother

  568. and then

  569. come and

  570. offer your

  571. gift

  572. and the

  573. apostle

  574. John

  575. teaches us

  576. the exact

  577. same thing

  578. when he

  579. says

  580. everyone

  581. who hates

  582. his brother

  583. is a

  584. murderer

  585. God is

  586. primarily

  587. concerned

  588. primarily

  589. not with

  590. our

  591. external

  592. activities

  593. not less

  594. than that

  595. but more

  596. than that

  597. primarily

  598. he's

  599. concerned

  600. with our

  601. hearts

  602. it's

  603. true

  604. that it

  605. is the

  606. hand

  607. that

  608. ultimately

  609. executes

  610. murder

  611. but murder

  612. is conceived

  613. in a

  614. heart

  615. that nurses

  616. anger

  617. and hatred

  618. against

  619. another

  620. person

  621. think about

  622. it

  623. can you

  624. nurse

  625. anger

  626. against

  627. someone

  628. or can

  629. you hold

  630. hatred

  631. in your

  632. heart

  633. without

  634. the desire

  635. to bring

  636. harm

  637. to that

  638. person

  639. if you

  640. search

  641. your

  642. heart

  643. you'll

  644. see that

  645. no

  646. you

  647. cannot

  648. the

  649. intent

  650. to

  651. harm

  652. is

  653. inseparably

  654. bound

  655. up

  656. with

  657. these

  658. attitudes

  659. and so

  660. the law

  661. also

  662. forbids

  663. murder

  664. of the

  665. heart

  666. but even

  667. this

  668. even

  669. this

  670. is not

  671. the full

  672. extent

  673. of the

  674. law

  675. even

  676. this

  677. doesn't

  678. go far

  679. enough

  680. because

  681. at its

  682. very

  683. core

  684. this

  685. commandment

  686. is not

  687. negative

  688. you

  689. shall

  690. not

  691. but it's

  692. positive

  693. you

  694. shall

  695. turn

  696. with me

  697. to one

  698. final

  699. bible

  700. reference

  701. it's in

  720. here

  721. Paul

  722. says

  723. oh

  724. no one

  725. anything

  726. except

  727. to love

  728. one another

  729. to love

  730. one another

  731. for he

  732. who loves

  733. another

  734. has fulfilled

  735. the law

  736. for the

  737. commandments

  738. you shall

  739. not commit

  740. adultery

  741. you shall

  742. not murder

  743. you shall

  744. not steal

  745. you shall

  746. not bear

  747. false witness

  748. you shall

  749. not covet

  750. and if there

  751. is any

  752. other

  753. commandment

  754. are all

  755. summed up

  756. in this

  757. saying

  758. namely

  759. you shall

  760. love your

  761. neighbor

  762. as yourself

  763. love

  764. does no

  765. harm

  766. to a

  767. neighbor

  768. therefore

  769. love

  770. is the

  771. fulfillment

  772. of the

  773. law

  774. you shall

  775. love your

  776. neighbor

  777. as

  778. yourself

  779. love

  780. is the

  781. fulfillment

  782. of the

  783. law

  784. only

  785. love

  786. only

  787. love

  788. fulfills

  789. this

  790. law

  791. you shall

  792. not

  793. murder

  794. that's

  795. what it

  796. is saying

  797. and what

  798. is meant

  799. by this

  800. love

  801. love

  802. is patient

  803. love

  804. is kind

  805. love

  806. does not

  807. envy

  808. or boast

  809. it is not

  810. arrogant

  811. or rude

  812. it does not

  813. insist on

  814. its own

  815. way

  816. it's not

  817. irritable

  818. or resentful

  819. this is the

  820. biblical picture

  821. of love

  822. and not just

  823. our spouse

  824. often we'll hear

  825. these words

  826. read in the

  827. context of a

  828. wedding

  829. and that's

  830. great

  831. it's fine

  832. we need to

  833. love our

  834. spouse

  835. in this

  836. way

  837. but these

  838. words

  839. in that

  840. letter

  841. are written

  842. in the

  843. context

  844. of all

  845. our

  846. relationships

  847. with every

  848. other

  849. human being

  850. that is

  851. the kind

  852. of love

  853. that the

  854. bible

  855. desires

  856. and commands

  857. for us

  858. in our

  859. relations

  860. with fellow

  861. human

  862. beings

  863. and how

  864. can we

  865. possibly

  866. achieve

  867. a standard

  868. of love

  869. such as

  870. this

  871. there's

  872. only one

  873. way

  874. and it's

  875. by denying

  876. ourselves

  877. this is

  878. what Jesus

  879. requires of

  880. every single

  881. person who

  882. would want

  883. to be his

  884. disciple

  885. if anyone

  886. would come

  887. after me

  888. let him

  889. deny himself

  890. and take

  891. up his

  892. cross

  893. and follow

  894. me

  895. or hear

  896. the apostle

  897. Paul

  898. in humility

  899. count others

  900. more

  901. important

  902. than

  903. yourselves

  904. if you're

  905. a follower

  906. of Christ

  907. you are

  908. not your

  909. own

  910. for you

  911. were bought

  912. at a

  913. price

  914. so if

  915. we are

  916. not our

  917. own

  918. but the

  919. Lord's

  920. then it

  921. becomes

  922. clear how

  923. we must

  924. live

  925. we are

  926. not our

  927. own

  928. so let

  929. it not

  930. be our

  931. will

  932. that determines

  933. our plans

  934. and our

  935. actions

  936. we're not

  937. our own

  938. so let it

  939. not be our

  940. goal to

  941. seek what's

  942. best for

  943. ourselves

  944. we are

  945. not our

  946. own

  947. let us

  948. therefore

  949. forget

  950. ourselves

  951. and all

  952. that is

  953. ours

  954. for we

  955. belong to

  956. the Lord

  957. therefore

  958. let us

  959. live for

  960. him

  961. and die

  962. for him

  963. we belong

  964. to the

  965. Lord

  966. let his

  967. will

  968. determine

  969. our plans

  970. and our

  971. actions

  972. we belong

  973. to the

  974. Lord

  975. let everything

  976. that is in

  977. us

  978. strive

  979. toward him

  980. yield

  981. to him

  982. desiring

  983. nothing for

  984. ourselves

  985. but to

  986. follow the

  987. leading of

  988. the Lord

  989. alone

  990. this emptying

  991. ourselves of

  992. our own

  993. natural

  994. desires

  995. esteeming

  996. others more

  997. highly

  998. than

  999. ourselves

  1000. devoting

  1001. ourselves

  1002. completely

  1003. to doing

  1004. good for

  1005. others

  1006. is the

  1007. only way

  1008. to fulfill

  1009. the law

  1010. of love

  1011. and the

  1012. law that

  1013. you should

  1014. not murder

  1015. and unless

  1016. by the

  1017. grace

  1018. and the

  1019. help of

  1020. God

  1021. we get

  1022. out of

  1023. ourselves

  1024. we can

  1025. do

  1026. nothing

  1027. how can

  1028. we do

  1029. the works

  1030. of love

  1031. unless we

  1032. deny

  1033. ourselves

  1034. completely

  1035. and give

  1036. ourselves

  1037. to others

  1038. we are

  1039. incapable

  1040. unless

  1041. we give

  1042. up all

  1043. thought

  1044. of

  1045. ourself

  1046. love

  1047. does

  1048. not

  1049. seek

  1050. its

  1051. own

  1052. Paul

  1053. taught

  1054. that

  1055. was

  1056. one

  1057. phrase

  1058. out of

  1059. those

  1060. that

  1061. teaching

  1062. on

  1063. love

  1064. that we

  1065. read a

  1066. few

  1067. moments

  1068. ago

  1069. love

  1070. does

  1071. not

  1072. seek

  1073. its

  1074. own

  1075. what

  1076. does

  1077. this

  1078. mean

  1079. but

  1080. that

  1081. we

  1082. are

  1083. required

  1084. to

  1085. neglect

  1086. ourselves

  1087. and

  1088. our

  1089. possessions

  1090. in order

  1091. to look

  1092. after the

  1093. other

  1094. person's

  1095. good

  1096. even

  1097. to

  1098. willingly

  1099. yield

  1100. up

  1101. what

  1102. is by

  1103. rights

  1104. our

  1105. own

  1106. and give

  1107. it

  1108. to

  1109. another

  1110. to

  1111. do

  1112. this

  1113. and to

  1114. do

  1115. this

  1116. we

  1117. simply

  1118. have

  1119. to do

  1120. violence

  1121. to our

  1122. human

  1123. nature

  1124. it is

  1125. so

  1126. contrary

  1127. to

  1128. everything

  1129. that is

  1130. within

  1131. us

  1132. that

  1133. leads

  1134. us

  1135. to

  1136. love

  1137. ourselves

  1138. alone

  1139. and

  1140. think

  1141. of

  1142. ourselves

  1143. more

  1144. highly

  1145. than

  1146. we

  1147. think

  1148. of

  1149. other

  1150. people

  1151. to

  1152. make

  1153. ourselves

  1154. superior

  1155. to

  1156. others

  1157. in

  1158. so

  1159. many

  1160. ways

  1161. and

  1162. so

  1163. whatever

  1164. we

  1165. can

  1166. do

  1167. we

  1168. must

  1169. do

  1170. we

  1171. must

  1172. put

  1173. our

  1174. interests

  1175. in

  1176. second

  1177. place

  1178. for

  1179. the

  1180. benefit

  1181. of

  1182. the

  1183. other

  1184. person

  1185. and

  1186. put

  1187. them

  1188. in

  1189. the

  1190. first

  1191. place

  1192. God

  1193. has

  1194. entrusted

  1195. to

  1196. you

  1197. and

  1198. to

  1199. me

  1200. to

  1201. all

  1202. of

  1203. us

  1204. various

  1205. gifts

  1206. and

  1207. talents

  1208. and

  1209. abilities

  1210. and

  1211. time

  1212. and

  1213. resources

  1214. and

  1215. money

  1216. and

  1217. he's

  1218. given

  1219. those

  1220. things

  1221. and

  1222. entrusted

  1223. them

  1224. to

  1225. us

  1226. not

  1227. for

  1228. building

  1229. up

  1230. ourselves

  1231. but

  1232. for

  1233. building

  1234. up

  1235. others

  1236. and

  1237. one

  1238. day

  1239. we

  1240. will

  1241. have

  1242. to

  1243. give

  1244. our

  1245. care

  1246. even

  1247. our

  1248. physical

  1249. strength

  1250. day

  1251. by

  1252. day

  1253. and

  1254. our

  1255. stewardship

  1256. will

  1257. be

  1258. measured

  1259. and

  1260. tested

  1261. by

  1262. the

  1263. rule

  1264. of

  1265. love

  1266. that's

  1267. the

  1268. standard

  1269. by

  1270. which

  1271. we

  1272. will

  1273. be

  1274. measured

  1275. and

  1276. finally

  1277. in

  1278. all

  1279. these

  1280. things

  1281. we're

  1282. not

  1283. to

  1284. consider

  1285. at

  1286. all

  1287. the

  1288. worthiness

  1289. of

  1290. the

  1291. person

  1292. that

  1293. we

  1294. are

  1295. seeking

  1296. to

  1297. serve

  1298. but

  1299. only

  1300. as

  1301. we

  1302. saw

  1303. earlier

  1304. that

  1305. they

  1306. have

  1307. been

  1308. made

  1309. in

  1310. the

  1311. image

  1312. of

  1313. God

  1314. because

  1315. it

  1316. is

  1317. to

  1318. that

  1319. image

  1320. that

  1321. image

  1322. of

  1323. God

  1324. that

  1325. we

  1326. owe

  1327. all

  1328. our

  1329. love

  1330. and

  1331. our

  1332. honor

  1333. especially

  1334. to

  1335. those

  1336. of

  1337. the

  1338. household

  1339. of

  1340. faith

  1341. as

  1342. Paul

  1343. says

  1344. because

  1345. in

  1346. them

  1347. the

  1348. image

  1349. of

  1350. God

  1351. is

  1352. being

  1353. restored

  1354. to

  1355. its

  1356. former

  1357. glory

  1358. by

  1359. the

  1360. work

  1361. of

  1362. the

  1363. Spirit

  1364. of

  1365. Christ

  1366. in

  1367. them

  1368. but

  1369. nevertheless

  1370. it

  1371. applies

  1372. so

  1373. when

  1374. we

  1375. meet

  1376. someone

  1377. in

  1378. need

  1379. of

  1380. our

  1381. help

  1382. we

  1383. must

  1384. not

  1385. say

  1386. he's

  1387. a

  1388. stranger

  1389. I

  1390. don't

  1391. need

  1392. to

  1393. help

  1394. him

  1395. he's

  1396. not

  1397. a

  1398. stranger

  1399. at

  1400. the

  1401. most

  1402. basic

  1403. level

  1404. he

  1405. shares

  1406. your

  1407. flesh

  1408. and

  1409. blood

  1410. nor

  1411. can

  1412. we

  1413. say

  1414. that

  1415. person

  1416. is

  1417. worthless

  1418. I

  1419. don't

  1420. owe

  1421. him

  1422. or

  1423. I

  1424. don't

  1425. owe

  1426. her

  1427. anything

  1428. that

  1429. may

  1430. be

  1431. so

  1432. but

  1433. the

  1434. image

  1435. of

  1436. God

  1437. in

  1438. her

  1439. is

  1440. worthy

  1441. of

  1442. your

  1443. entire

  1444. life

  1445. and

  1446. everything

  1447. that you

  1448. possess

  1449. to seek

  1450. their

  1451. good

  1452. but what

  1453. if that

  1454. person

  1455. has treated

  1456. me

  1457. unfairly

  1458. has

  1459. cursed

  1460. me

  1461. has

  1462. hurt

  1463. me

  1464. even

  1465. this

  1466. is no

  1467. reason

  1468. not to

  1469. embrace

  1470. him

  1471. or her

  1472. in love

  1473. because

  1474. regardless

  1475. of the

  1476. sins

  1477. committed

  1478. against

  1479. you by

  1480. that

  1481. person

  1482. remember

  1483. the

  1484. words

  1485. of

  1486. the

  1487. Lord

  1488. Jesus

  1489. but

  1490. I

  1491. say

  1492. to

  1493. you

  1494. love

  1495. your

  1496. enemies

  1497. and

  1498. pray

  1499. for

  1500. those

  1501. who

  1502. persecute

  1503. you

  1504. so

  1505. that

  1506. you

  1507. may

  1508. be

  1509. sons

  1510. of

  1511. your

  1512. father

  1513. who

  1514. is

  1515. in

  1516. heaven

  1517. so

  1518. even

  1519. here

  1520. we

  1521. must

  1522. not

  1523. look

  1524. at

  1525. the

  1526. deeds

  1527. of

  1528. the

  1532. deeds

  1533. of

  1534. those

  1535. whom

  1536. were

  1537. called

  1538. to

  1539. love

  1540. but

  1541. to

  1542. the

  1543. image

  1544. of

  1545. God

  1546. that

  1547. is

  1548. in

  1549. them

  1550. the

  1551. God

  1552. of

  1553. all

  1554. beauty

  1555. and

  1556. all

  1557. goodness

  1558. and

  1559. by

  1560. the

  1561. power

  1562. of

  1563. God

  1564. we

  1565. will

  1566. be

  1567. able

  1568. to

  1569. do

  1570. what

  1571. is

  1572. utterly

  1573. opposed

  1574. to

  1575. our

  1576. human

  1577. nature

  1578. to

  1579. love

  1580. them

  1581. and

  1582. to

  1583. embrace

  1584. them

  1585. to

  1586. sum

  1587. up

  1588. them

  1589. all

  1590. violence

  1591. injury

  1592. any

  1593. harmful

  1594. thing

  1595. at

  1596. all

  1597. that

  1598. may

  1599. injure

  1600. or

  1601. harm

  1602. our

  1603. neighbor's

  1604. body

  1605. is

  1606. forbidden

  1607. to

  1608. us

  1609. by

  1610. this

  1611. law

  1612. and

  1613. we

  1614. are

  1615. commanded

  1616. if

  1617. there

  1618. is

  1619. anything

  1620. in

  1621. us

  1622. anything

  1623. we

  1624. have

  1625. any

  1626. opportunity

  1627. that

  1628. presents

  1629. itself

  1630. to

  1631. save

  1632. our

  1633. neighbor's

  1634. life

  1635. we

  1636. are

  1637. faithfully

  1638. to

  1639. do

  1640. so

  1641. and

  1642. if

  1643. we

  1644. are

  1645. aware

  1646. of

  1647. anything

  1648. harmful

  1649. we're

  1650. to

  1651. do

  1652. all

  1653. that

  1654. we're

  1655. able

  1656. to

  1657. do

  1658. to

  1659. prevent

  1660. it

  1661. from

  1662. causing

  1663. harm

  1664. to

  1665. our

  1666. neighbor

  1667. and

  1668. if

  1669. they're

  1670. in

  1671. danger

  1672. to

  1673. lend

  1674. a

  1675. helping

  1676. hand

  1677. and

  1678. finally

  1679. consider

  1680. brothers

  1681. and

  1682. sisters

  1683. that

  1684. if

  1685. God

  1686. commands

  1687. us

  1688. to

  1689. show

  1690. so

  1691. much

  1692. concern

  1693. for the

  1694. safety

  1695. and

  1696. well-being

  1697. of our

  1698. neighbor's

  1699. body

  1700. how much

  1701. effort

  1702. and zeal

  1703. do we owe

  1704. to seeking

  1705. the safety

  1706. of his

  1707. soul

  1708. which in

  1709. God's sight

  1710. is far

  1711. more precious

  1712. than the

  1713. body

  1714. and so

  1715. if you

  1716. like me

  1717. like me

  1718. find yourself

  1719. to be

  1720. a

  1721. transgressor

  1722. one

  1723. who has

  1724. broken

  1725. this

  1726. law

  1727. then

  1728. turn to

  1729. Christ

  1730. there is

  1731. abundant

  1732. forgiveness

  1733. of sins

  1734. in him

  1735. and then

  1736. go forward

  1737. bearing fruit

  1738. in keeping

  1739. with repentance

  1740. amen

  1741. are

  1742. you
