  1. Good morning, Watermark. My name is Chris. I oversee community groups here at Watermark,

  2. and if you're here for the first time, you're very, very welcome amongst us. Today is not

  3. just a day of celebration for Father's Day, it's also a day of mourning. And I would like

  4. you to bow your heads for a minute's silence for the victims of the tragedy of what took

  5. place earlier this morning. The England football team lost 2-1 in a tragic performance. Seriously,

  6. let me just pray before we start. Father, I pray that we would know you as our Father.

  7. I pray today that we would understand something more of how amazing it is to be adopted as

  8. your children. I pray that you'd speak to each one of us and show us more of yourself. Amen.

  9. Today we're looking in Romans 8, and we're continuing our series here. A writer called

  10. J.I. Packer once said this, what is a Christian? The answer can be answered in many ways, but

  11. the richest answer I know is a Christian is one who has God for his Father. If you want

  12. to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being

  13. God's child and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his

  14. worship and prayers and whole outlook on all of life, it means he does not understand Christianity

  15. very well. If that's not the thought that God is your Father and you being his child doesn't prompt and

  16. control your whole outlook on life, then you don't understand Christianity very well.

  17. And today my heart is that each one of us would understand Christianity better. That on Father's Day,

  18. we would see that there is a father who is far beyond the father's, even the best father that you may have had.

  19. If you were to look around this room now, look around, very attractive faces, but around you as you look

  20. are 200, 250 people who are deeply insecure, including me. Now you may be offended by that, you may think I'm pretty secure,

  21. but if I just spend a bit of time with you, I can guarantee that it wouldn't take me very long to prove the point.

  22. Just, I was at Essential the other day, and just looking at people, and people who walk, you know,

  23. if you walk past a window, or you walk past a glass door when you're out, it's fascinating to see how people respond.

  24. You know, they've looked in the mirror probably just 10 minutes earlier, but suddenly they see the door,

  25. and they're just checking that their image is still up to standard for what they want to portray to everybody else.

  26. Now I'm sure none of you do that.

  27. Or maybe you were really happy with your work package, with your exam marks, with your kids' performance,

  28. and then you hear about everybody else, and suddenly you feel like, oh, maybe I got second best in that.

  29. And, you know, we could go on and on and on and on with example after example,

  30. which show us that deep down, we are actually people who are insecure in many ways.

  31. And it's not hard to understand why we feel insecure.

  32. The world around us is insecure and makes us feel insecure.

  33. We have white papers from Beijing that make us feel insecure.

  34. We have stock markets that make us feel insecure.

  35. We have jobs which the security, we wonder about whether we're going to still be in the job.

  36. Our health is sometimes uncertain.

  37. And if it wasn't just, if that wasn't enough, we also have other people who make us feel insecure.

  38. We can't always trust other people.

  39. Even if you were born in the best family with the greatest parents,

  40. I'm sure that there were times where you craved your parents' approval.

  41. You wanted them to be there.

  42. You wanted them to say maybe, well done.

  43. You wanted them to be there on that special occasion, and maybe they weren't.

  44. Maybe sometimes they were too busy.

  45. Maybe they were there, but emotionally they were detached.

  46. Maybe they were too much.

  47. And deep inside, many of us still have that same longing for security and approval

  48. because we didn't receive it as a kid.

  49. You see, all of us are insecure in different ways.

  50. and it's not just that but also we know that if we're honest with ourselves we ourselves

  51. are not trustworthy sometimes we hurt the people that we love and we regret it sometimes we feel

  52. like there are things in our past which weigh us down there's things we know we should do but we

  53. don't do and there are things that we don't do which we know we should do and that's what the

  54. bible calls sin and whether it's externally or internally all of us have these insecurities

  55. and you can feel secure for a little while maybe you're feeling it's a good period at this moment

  56. i'm on top of my game but sooner or later the world kind of tips you up at some point and you can be

  57. back in flux feeling insecure again now as we as we look in this passage and there's so much in this

  58. passage we can't focus on all of it and i'm going to particularly focus on verses 15 to 17

  59. this passage is talking to each one of us this morning it's talking to us in our insecurities

  60. and it's telling us that there are two different identities that we can live under

  61. we can live as orphans who are enslaved or we can live as adopted children who know we're loved by

  62. our father so we're going to look at those two different identities we're then going to have an

  63. interview with melanie case then afterwards we're going to finally examine how does the experience

  64. of knowing what being a child of god change the way we view life okay so that's that's where we're

  65. going we've looked through the book of rumors if you've been following along with us so far

  66. and paul has brought in all kinds of contrasts he's been telling us that you can live two different

  67. ways you can live trusting in yourself or trusting in christ you can live in adam or you can live in christ

  68. you can live in the flesh or you can live in the spirit and today it's you can live as an orphan or

  69. you can live as an adopted son

  70. and what he's done he's talking to some small groups of christians in churches from different

  71. backgrounds and he's telling them that the gospel message radically changes your view of everything

  72. your gospel message changes your view of everything so he's gone through the bible story the bible

  73. story is basically a garden to garden story it's a story about we were placed in a garden as a in an

  74. intimate dependent relationship on our loving heavenly father with security and in that relationship

  75. that relationship was the foundation of all the security in the world that there is but as children

  76. of god what we decided to say was actually

  77. we prefer to run away from our father we we didn't care about him we said okay i want to live my life my

  78. way and i'm gonna i'm gonna treat you as dead i don't you don't have any say in my life that's what we said

  79. and we thought we could be free in ourselves but the only freedom that we gained was the freedom

  80. of being an orphan and the world became like a giant orphanage with people running around trying to

  81. fend for themselves trying to find hope trying to find meaning trying to find significance

  82. in a insecure world

  83. and we kind of pilfer for survival

  84. and the thing is if you're trying to survive what happens is often people become slaves to somebody else

  85. like julie was talking about earlier and we cling to anything and anyone who can give us that sense of that security that we're craving

  86. because it was meant to be found in god but now we've become like orphans

  87. and you know sometimes maybe we join gangs you know we join um office gangs who are kind of um chasing after success on the stock market

  88. or we join singles gangs who are chasing after the one who's going to fulfill your greatest desires

  89. or

  90. we join parents gangs

  91. who who are pushing their kids to success

  92. all to make ourselves feel good secure

  93. worth something in our lives

  94. but actually in those gangs what often

  95. is the gang leader

  96. what often drives us is fear

  97. fear of missing out

  98. fear of being rejected by others

  99. fear

  100. that maybe

  101. other people are going to think badly of you

  102. fears of all kinds

  103. but the bible story is this

  104. that god

  105. takes us out of slavery

  106. to gangs

  107. to fear

  108. when we're at our worst

  109. as orphans who are running around trying to find meaning

  110. he adopted us

  111. into his family

  112. which was the beginning

  113. of that restoration of the way we were always meant to be

  114. and that's the beginning of full restoration of the whole world

  115. okay

  116. so

  117. to understand just a little bit more of this background

  118. of um

  119. of verse

  120. uh

  121. 15

  122. let me just read it to you one more time

  123. for you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear

  124. but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons

  125. by whom we cry

  126. Abba

  127. Father

  128. to understand what it means to be adopted

  129. we've got to understand the um

  130. the context

  131. in the roman world

  132. adoption was something in the roman world where

  133. um

  134. the roman world was a man's world

  135. the father of the household was the undisputed authority

  136. and even a son

  137. even when he was grown up

  138. he was still under his father's authority

  139. and it was critical for a father

  140. to have for his sense of esteem in society

  141. to have a son

  142. who could inherit

  143. all of his wealth

  144. all of his property

  145. everything that he had

  146. now sometimes powerful landowners

  147. aristocrats

  148. for one reason or another

  149. didn't have a son

  150. and so what they would do

  151. they would go and look around society

  152. and find someone from a lower status

  153. maybe even their slave

  154. to make them their son

  155. so that they would become the person who inherited all of their wealth

  156. and what would happen is

  157. their old father would have to legally renounce

  158. his authority over their son

  159. all the debts that the son had were cleared

  160. and the son became

  161. no longer a slave or a lower class citizen

  162. he became the son of a nobleman

  163. he had new responsibilities

  164. but he was now seated

  165. in a place of honor

  166. the most significant example of this is

  167. Julius Caesar adopted

  168. the emperor who became the emperor

  169. Augustus Caesar

  170. and the thing is

  171. Augustus Caesar

  172. he wasn't Augustus to start with

  173. he changed his name

  174. and when Julius Caesar adopted him into his family

  175. you know what happened?

  176. he became

  177. the emperor

  178. the owner of the whole Roman Empire

  179. from nothing

  180. from a nobody

  181. to a somebody

  182. that's what happened

  183. and that is what God

  184. and Paul is saying here

  185. happens for each one of us

  186. you were orphans

  187. you were slaves

  188. you were people who

  189. were nobodies

  190. but actually

  191. I have removed all your debts

  192. I've brought you into my family

  193. I've made you now

  194. sons of the royal family

  195. you are seated in a place of honor

  196. and the kingdom that is mine

  197. is yours

  198. that's what he's saying

  199. now let's just think about this for a minute

  200. one more minute

  201. Russell Moore

  202. who's the head of a seminary in the States

  203. who's adopted two kids himself

  204. he once said this

  205. imagine for a moment

  206. that you're adopting a child

  207. as you meet with the social worker

  208. in the last stage of the process

  209. you're told that this 12 year old

  210. has been in and out of psychotherapy

  211. since he was three

  212. he persists in burning things

  213. and attempting repeatedly

  214. to skin kittens alive

  215. he acts out sexually

  216. the social worker says

  217. although she doesn't really fill you in

  218. on what that means

  219. she continues with a little bit of family history

  220. this boy's father

  221. grandfather

  222. great-grandfather

  223. and great-great-grandfather

  224. all had histories of violence

  225. ranging from spousal abuse

  226. to serial murder

  227. each of them ended their life

  228. the same way

  229. death by suicide

  230. each found hanging from a rope

  231. of blankets

  232. in his respective prison cell

  233. now think for a moment

  234. would you want to adopt

  235. a child like that?

  236. would you want that child?

  237. if you did adopt them

  238. wouldn't you want to keep an eye on them

  239. as they played with your other children?

  240. would you watch nervously

  241. as he looked at the kitchen knife

  242. the knife on the kitchen table?

  243. would you leave the room

  244. as he watched a movie

  245. with your daughter

  246. with the lights out?

  247. well he's me

  248. and he's you

  249. that's what the gospel

  250. is telling us

  251. your birth father

  252. has fangs

  253. and left to ourselves

  254. we'll show ourselves

  255. to be as serpentine

  256. as he is

  257. wow

  258. we don't want to think

  259. of ourselves like that

  260. I want to think

  261. that actually

  262. I deserve to be

  263. in God's family

  264. I want to think

  265. that actually

  266. there was something about me

  267. that made God

  268. just think

  269. man Chris

  270. I've got to have him

  271. man

  272. can't let him

  273. go to another team

  274. but actually

  275. the gospel is saying

  276. God

  277. wanted

  278. you

  279. God

  280. took

  281. the initiative

  282. knowing

  283. everything about you

  284. he

  285. took the initiative

  286. it wasn't your initiative

  287. he took the initiative

  288. and out of his

  289. infinite love

  290. he came down

  291. to the squalor

  292. of the orphanage

  293. that was at

  294. earth

  295. with all these people

  296. running around

  297. and he became

  298. an orphan

  299. for each one of us

  300. he was abandoned

  301. by his

  302. father

  303. so that you

  304. and I

  305. would never

  306. have to be

  307. abandoned

  308. ever again

  309. we

  310. are secure

  311. in his family

  312. that

  313. is the gospel

  314. and the beautiful

  315. thing about it

  316. is this

  317. you could earn

  318. more money

  319. in the world

  320. you could have

  321. the greatest spouse

  322. in the world

  323. you could earn

  324. all the respect

  325. that you ever wanted

  326. all the achievements

  327. that you ever desired

  328. and the thing is

  329. you could never

  330. be more secure

  331. than you are now

  332. in God's family

  333. if you're a Christian

  334. isn't that amazing

  335. isn't that amazing

  336. Melanie

  337. case

  338. if I can

  339. find her

  340. is going to come up

  341. and just

  342. share with us

  343. a little bit

  344. about her story

  345. a few extras

  346. this morning

  347. that's great

  348. thank you Melanie

  349. so Melanie

  350. and Jason

  351. would you like

  352. to just tell us

  353. a little bit

  354. about

  355. your family

  356. my name is Jason

  357. and this is Melanie

  358. and this is Helen

  359. and this is George

  360. we have three others

  361. Esri is our oldest

  362. Javi is our oldest son

  363. who's adopted

  364. from Guatemala

  365. and Helen

  366. and Ethan

  367. are in the process

  368. of being adopted

  369. from Uganda

  370. thank you

  371. it's an amazing

  372. family you've got

  373. and you've probably

  374. seen them running

  375. around

  376. causing joy

  377. to everybody

  378. but could you

  379. tell me

  380. as we've kind of

  381. talked about

  382. the process

  383. of adoption

  384. there are some

  385. people here

  386. who've adopted

  387. many of us

  388. maybe have not

  389. had experience

  390. of this

  391. maybe could you

  392. kind of run us

  393. through

  394. what some of that

  395. process of adoption

  396. has been like

  397. and how you've seen

  398. orphans

  399. when they're in

  400. that situation

  401. how does

  402. being an orphan

  403. affect

  404. children

  405. I think

  406. the process

  407. can be quite

  408. long and lengthy

  409. and always

  410. has hiccups

  411. but as far as

  412. I think something

  413. you just mentioned

  414. in the sermon

  415. a few minutes ago

  416. about how

  417. God pursues us

  418. how God initiates

  419. and I think

  420. that's a really

  421. poignant point

  422. about physical

  423. adoption

  424. is that

  425. the parents

  426. are the one

  427. who initiate

  428. that relationship

  429. the parents

  430. are the one

  431. who pursue

  432. that

  433. and who

  434. do the work

  435. of getting

  436. that child

  437. home

  438. and bringing

  439. that child

  440. into their

  441. family

  442. and there's

  443. no merit

  444. on the part

  445. of the child

  446. the child

  447. did not

  448. do anything

  449. to become

  450. an orphan

  451. and the child

  452. cannot do

  453. anything

  454. to earn

  455. favor

  456. to be adopted

  457. but the parents

  458. are the ones

  459. who are assessed

  460. and scrutinized

  461. so that

  462. they

  463. so they put

  464. in the work

  465. I'm not saying

  466. that for us

  467. I'm just saying

  468. that that really

  469. relates to how

  470. God is the one

  471. who puts in

  472. the work

  473. to bring us

  474. into his family

  475. but I think

  476. as far as

  477. children

  478. who are orphans

  479. and some

  480. of the things

  481. that we've

  482. noted

  483. in two different

  484. orphanages

  485. so our kids

  486. when we met

  487. them for the

  488. first time

  489. those of you

  490. who are moms

  491. you'll know

  492. that overjoy

  493. when you

  494. when you birth

  495. a child

  496. or when you

  497. adopt a child

  498. and just that

  499. that first meeting

  500. and that wow

  501. and that I don't

  502. have words for this

  503. and that happened

  504. with each of our

  505. children we adopted

  506. as well

  507. it was different

  508. but it did happen

  509. and I was really

  510. grateful to God

  511. for that

  512. but what we

  513. noticed when we

  514. meet them

  515. in that moment

  516. they are timid

  517. they are scared

  518. they don't know us

  519. they've never been

  520. known really

  521. by anyone

  522. they don't have

  523. any favorites

  524. and that to me

  525. was really strange

  526. I asked the caseworker

  527. well what are

  528. their favorites

  529. you know what

  530. what color do they

  531. like what animal

  532. and she said

  533. they don't have any

  534. because they've

  535. never been noted

  536. or noticed

  537. in that way

  538. so they don't know

  539. to have

  540. favorites

  541. does that make any

  542. and to me

  543. that was really

  544. hard to contemplate

  545. and so my eldest

  546. daughter said

  547. to me this morning

  548. I asked her

  549. what should I add

  550. to this talk

  551. and she said

  552. well they don't

  553. like anything

  554. there's nothing

  555. that they can

  556. you know

  557. they don't like

  558. anything

  559. I mean

  560. and then when you

  561. ask okay

  562. what do you like

  563. well they like

  564. exactly what I like

  565. she's like

  566. have a favorite color

  567. you know

  568. you don't have

  569. to like pink

  570. so yeah

  571. that's a new

  572. thing for us

  573. just understanding

  574. that they're learning

  575. what it means

  576. to own anything

  577. and to own family

  578. so those are some

  579. yeah timid

  580. I think fear

  581. and not being known

  582. great

  583. and how have you seen

  584. just in the process

  585. of children moving

  586. from being an orphan

  587. to being part

  588. of your family

  589. what are some

  590. of the struggles

  591. that happen there

  592. what are some

  593. of the joys

  594. that you've seen

  595. just in that process

  596. as far as

  597. as far as

  598. bringing them

  599. into our family

  600. I remember

  601. we went before

  602. the judge in Uganda

  603. and she said

  604. well how are you

  605. how are you going

  606. to treat these children

  607. and I said

  608. well once they're

  609. in our family

  610. I'm going to treat

  611. them just like

  612. the other children

  613. and it kind of

  614. it kind of

  615. I mean

  616. we try to have

  617. more patience

  618. and more sensitivity

  619. that they're dealing

  620. with more things

  621. from their past

  622. especially the ones

  623. that have more

  624. traumatic experiences

  625. but adoption

  626. is just the way

  627. that they enter

  628. into our family

  629. and once they're

  630. in our family

  631. it's just a more

  632. it's more an idea

  633. of assimilating them

  634. into our family

  635. and making sure

  636. that they know

  637. that there are cases

  638. and there's nothing

  639. they can ever do

  640. to break that bond

  641. and I mean

  642. they're just like

  643. all the other kids

  644. in that they test

  645. boundaries

  646. they have fits

  647. you know

  648. and you just

  649. like I said

  650. it really becomes

  651. more of an issue

  652. of parenting

  653. and making sure

  654. that they're strong

  655. and they're foundation

  656. in their identity

  657. as cases

  658. do you find

  659. the kids

  660. naturally

  661. just

  662. accepting

  663. to you as parents

  664. and naturally

  665. or are there any

  666. struggles that you find

  667. well I think

  668. the transition

  669. early on

  670. Helen had grown up

  671. in orphanages

  672. she was very happy

  673. there

  674. and she was very

  675. hesitant about

  676. coming with us

  677. Ethan had more

  678. trauma in his

  679. background

  680. and he loved

  681. the iPhone

  682. so I won him over

  683. pretty quickly

  684. by taking this picture

  685. but Helen

  686. the three weeks

  687. I was there

  688. she never did

  689. she never did

  690. really welcome me

  691. so that was

  692. kind of an issue

  693. for me

  694. you know

  695. so I remember

  696. the first time

  697. she gave me a hug

  698. I thought it was

  699. you know

  700. a real step forward

  701. but you know

  702. as they come over

  703. and as they get used

  704. to us

  705. and as they're here

  706. and bond with other kids

  707. you know

  708. it's become easier

  709. and easier

  710. great

  711. great

  712. thank you

  713. anything else

  714. you want to

  715. add on that

  716. well let me just pray

  717. pray for these guys

  718. even as you

  719. we know

  720. you're still going

  721. through some of the

  722. the issues

  723. with the Ugandan authorities

  724. so let me just pray

  725. pray for them

  726. Father thank you

  727. for this

  728. this family

  729. thank you for

  730. Melanie and Jason

  731. and for all of their kids

  732. and for the way

  733. that they're just

  734. such a great picture

  735. of how you

  736. you adopt us

  737. and you bring us

  738. into your family

  739. Lord I pray that you would

  740. bless them as parents

  741. bless them

  742. in their

  743. as they're seeking

  744. to bring the kids up

  745. to know you

  746. as their heavenly father

  747. Lord we pray for all the

  748. the details

  749. of all the legalities

  750. at the moment

  751. with the Ugandan authorities

  752. we pray that you would

  753. just really open those doors

  754. that that might happen

  755. and that each one of these kids

  756. would know that you

  757. are their father

  758. and that they are

  759. so secure in you

  760. please bless them

  761. as a family now

  762. in your name

  763. Amen

  764. Thanks guys

  765. Do you want to just

  766. take that down?

  767. Thank you

  768. Thank you

  769. You see

  770. what is it like

  771. to live

  772. as an orphan

  773. what is it like

  774. to live as a child of God

  775. orphans

  776. are often fearful

  777. they hide their food

  778. in their high chairs

  779. because they're not

  780. sure when the next meal

  781. may be coming

  782. they may be fearful

  783. but others

  784. will reject them

  785. so maybe they chase

  786. after approval

  787. from everybody else

  788. or

  789. they'll do anything

  790. to be liked

  791. they can't say no

  792. to anyone

  793. or the other

  794. the other extreme

  795. can be

  796. because they've been

  797. hurt before

  798. they feel they can't

  799. trust anyone

  800. so they can't open up

  801. they can't be vulnerable

  802. with other people

  803. because they're

  804. they're suspicious

  805. if someone does

  806. show them love

  807. sometimes orphans

  808. can be

  809. controlling

  810. because they want

  811. to be in control

  812. because they've had

  813. to sort out

  814. the world themselves

  815. they're the only ones

  816. who can fix

  817. the problems

  818. because there's no one

  819. else around

  820. to do it

  821. so they've got to

  822. take responsibility

  823. for everything

  824. themselves

  825. and sometimes

  826. that may mean

  827. orphans get angry

  828. they lash out

  829. because

  830. if people are getting

  831. in their way

  832. they can't control

  833. the situation

  834. it makes them feel

  835. insecure

  836. and the problem is

  837. often orphans

  838. are enslaved to fear

  839. and I wonder

  840. how many of us

  841. including me

  842. are like that

  843. we stockpile

  844. our money

  845. our stuff

  846. our time

  847. in our high chair

  848. bank accounts

  849. in our

  850. in our ways

  851. of trying to make

  852. ourselves secure

  853. we don't want to be

  854. generous

  855. because we're not sure

  856. what will happen

  857. in the future

  858. if we give away

  859. time now

  860. if we give away

  861. money now

  862. we're fearful

  863. about our kids

  864. we're fearful

  865. about our jobs

  866. will God

  867. actually provide

  868. for us

  869. or do I have

  870. to actually

  871. take it all

  872. on myself

  873. because no one

  874. else is going

  875. to sort out

  876. the situation

  877. maybe we're fearful

  878. and we don't say

  879. no to anyone

  880. because we've got

  881. to get other

  882. people's approval

  883. we want people

  884. to like us

  885. or we're trying

  886. so hard to fix

  887. everybody

  888. because we want

  889. to feel like

  890. we're needed

  891. and we're valuable

  892. and we're worth

  893. something

  894. and yet

  895. often

  896. and this is

  897. so true

  898. of myself

  899. we're living

  900. like orphans

  901. locked up

  902. by fear

  903. in an orphanage

  904. and we're

  905. shaking the bars

  906. of our cot

  907. angry

  908. complaining

  909. hurting

  910. stressed

  911. not knowing

  912. that we don't

  913. have to live

  914. there

  915. you see

  916. at the root

  917. of all

  918. of your

  919. anger issues

  920. all of your

  921. stress issues

  922. all of your

  923. worry about

  924. the future

  925. issues

  926. if you peel

  927. back the layers

  928. far enough

  929. you would find

  930. it all comes

  931. down to this

  932. one truth

  933. you and I

  934. have forgotten

  935. who our father

  936. is

  937. and we've forgotten

  938. that we're a

  939. child of God

  940. and we're living

  941. like an orphan

  942. someone once said

  943. man made

  944. orphanages

  945. for children

  946. but God

  947. made the family

  948. for children

  949. as followers

  950. of Jesus

  951. we cannot

  952. be satisfied

  953. with children

  954. living in

  955. orphanages

  956. as a long

  957. term solution

  958. I would like

  959. to say

  960. we as Christians

  961. cannot be satisfied

  962. with ourselves

  963. living as orphans

  964. in the long term

  965. it doesn't matter

  966. how long

  967. we've been a

  968. Christian

  969. every one of us

  970. in one part

  971. of our lives

  972. or another

  973. lives in an

  974. orphan

  975. and God

  976. wants to

  977. bring us

  978. in every

  979. part of our

  980. lives

  981. to knowing

  982. what it is

  983. to be a

  984. child of God

  985. so let's

  986. very quickly

  987. look at

  988. just some

  989. of the experience

  990. of what it is

  991. to be adopted

  992. as children

  993. verse 15

  994. says

  995. by the spirit

  996. we cry

  997. Abba

  998. father

  999. now Abba

  1000. is the

  1001. intimate cry

  1002. of a child

  1003. to a father

  1004. she knows

  1005. cares

  1006. and is fond

  1007. of her

  1008. you know

  1009. when you're

  1010. in a crowded

  1011. room

  1012. or you're

  1013. in a

  1014. pressure

  1015. situation

  1016. the presence

  1017. of someone

  1018. who loves

  1019. you

  1020. intimately

  1021. brings a

  1022. sense of

  1023. security

  1024. and safety

  1025. well here

  1026. in the passage

  1027. it says

  1028. we cry

  1029. Abba

  1030. father

  1031. notice it

  1032. doesn't say

  1033. we kind of

  1034. gently murmur

  1035. it doesn't say

  1036. we whisper

  1037. in dulcet tones

  1038. it says

  1039. we cry

  1040. Abba

  1041. father

  1042. now that word

  1043. Abba

  1044. occurs only

  1045. three times

  1046. in the bible

  1047. and one of

  1048. those times

  1049. is with

  1050. Jesus

  1051. in the garden

  1052. of Gethsemane

  1053. before he's

  1054. going to go

  1055. to the cross

  1056. and at that

  1057. moment

  1058. he is sweating

  1059. drops of blood

  1060. and he cries

  1061. out in distress

  1062. to his father

  1063. Abba

  1064. father

  1065. take this

  1066. cup

  1067. away from

  1068. me

  1069. you see

  1070. the cry

  1071. of Abba

  1072. is the cry

  1073. of a child

  1074. who maybe

  1075. is in distress

  1076. it's the cry

  1077. of a child

  1078. who has wandered

  1079. off somewhere

  1080. in the crowd

  1081. and is lost

  1082. and doesn't know

  1083. where their father

  1084. is at that moment

  1085. and they say

  1086. daddy

  1087. and the thing is

  1088. if you're an orphan

  1089. at that stage

  1090. you can cry

  1091. all you like

  1092. but the only person

1093. who's going to hear you

  1094. may be a stranger

  1095. but if you're a child

  1096. your father

  1097. hears

  1098. you

  1099. and he comes

  1100. running

  1101. to you

  1102. with open

  1103. arms

  1104. just like the father

  1105. in the prodigal son

  1106. story

  1107. he's right there

  1108. with you

  1109. you see

  1110. the world

  1111. is full of

  1112. precious situations

  1113. and moments

  1114. of stress

  1115. moments where we fear

  1116. moments of intimidation

  1117. moments of all kinds

  1118. of insecurity

  1119. and it's just

  1120. at those moments

  1121. that God

  1122. wants you

  1123. to cry to him

  1124. Abba

  1125. father

  1126. now an orphan

  1127. often doesn't cry

  1128. Abba father

  1129. because they think

  1130. they've got to fix

  1131. the situation

  1132. all themselves

  1133. so they don't cry

  1134. because they don't

  1135. think anyone

  1136. will hear them

  1137. but if you're

  1138. a child of God

  1139. God hears you

  1140. second

  1141. children of God

  1142. are reminded

  1143. who they are

  1144. you see

  1145. it's the spirit

  1146. who reminds you

  1147. of who you are

  1148. it's not your initiative

  1149. you didn't think

  1150. oh

  1151. I'd like to cry

  1152. to God now

  1153. because

  1154. the Bible says

  1155. that none of us

  1156. wanted actually

  1157. to run to God

  1158. we treated him

1159. as if he was dead

  1160. naturally

  1161. we wrapped up

  1162. in ourselves

  1163. but

  1164. what God does

  1165. he puts his spirit

  1166. in you

  1167. so that you

  1168. will cry to him

  1169. in those moments

  1170. it's his initiative

  1171. to do that

  1172. you know

  1173. whenever you read

  1174. a song lyric

  1175. and it kind of

  1176. gets your heart

1177. and you just want to say

  1178. father

1179. when you're in those situations

1180. and you just want to cry out

  1181. to God

  1182. God help me

  1183. those situations

  1184. are God

  1185. putting that cry

  1186. in your heart

  1187. because God

1188. is wanting to draw you

  1189. to himself

  1190. because that's a sign

  1191. that God loves you

1192. because he is drawing you

  1193. at that moment

  1194. because he wants you

1195. and he wants to know you

  1196. and there's another thing

  1197. the spirit does

  1198. the spirit also

  1199. continually

  1200. bears witness

  1201. that's what verse 16

  1202. says

  1203. the spirit bears witness

  1204. with our spirit

  1205. that we are children

  1206. of God

  1207. now what that means

  1208. is this

  1209. his job

  1210. is to remind you

  1211. that you're a child of God

1212. if he doesn't do it

  1213. he'll get fired

  1214. okay

  1215. so it's his job

  1216. to do it

  1217. now

  1218. think about this

1219. when was the last time

  1220. that you heard

  1221. the spirit

  1222. saying to you

  1223. you're

  1224. my

  1225. child

  1226. when did it last

  1227. thrill you

  1228. that God

  1229. was your father

  1230. I mean

  1231. really excite you

  1232. that God

  1233. was your father

  1234. because

  1235. it doesn't matter

  1236. how long

  1237. you've been a Christian

  1238. it's possible

  1239. to grow deaf

  1240. to what the spirit

  1241. is saying

  1242. because in this world

1243. there are so many voices

1244. that are competing to us

  1245. voices telling you

  1246. you're not good enough

  1247. voices telling you

  1248. you've got to just

  1249. try a bit harder

  1250. yourself

  1251. voices which are

  1252. condemning you

  1253. voices which are

  1254. telling you

  1255. look at what

  1256. everybody else has got

  1257. voices which are

  1258. telling you

  1259. life's not fair

  1260. and you know

  1261. so many of those

  1262. just drown out

  1263. the spirit's voice

  1264. the thing is

  1265. what each of you

  1266. and I need

  1267. we need

  1268. spiritual headphones

  1269. we need these things

  1270. because

  1271. God's just convicted me

  1272. of this really

  1273. just as I've been

  1274. just thinking about this

  1275. because you see

  1276. headphones are great

  1277. you know what

  1278. headphones do

  1279. they do two things

  1280. one is

  1281. you put them in

  1282. and it blocks out

  1283. all the noise

  1284. that you don't want

  1285. to hear

  1286. yeah

  1287. all the other voices

  1288. that you don't want

  1289. to hear

  1290. if you want to

  1291. ignore somebody

1292. the best way to do it

  1293. is just put your

  1294. headphones in

  1295. and then they'll

  1296. stop talking to you

  1297. okay

  1298. you notice that

  1299. now

  1300. so it does that

  1301. but the other thing

  1302. it does

  1303. is it enables you

  1304. to focus on

  1305. and concentrate

  1306. on the noise

  1307. that you do want

  1308. to hear

  1309. the voices

  1310. that you do want

  1311. to hear

  1312. and so I think

  1313. we need to use

  1314. the Bible

  1315. and God's word

  1316. as spiritual

  1317. headphones

  1318. we need to

  1319. take this passage

  1320. and meditate

  1321. on it daily

  1322. speak it to yourself

  1323. daily

  1324. I would recommend

  1325. that you learn

  1326. and memorize

  1327. verses 15 to 17

  1328. as your spiritual

  1329. headphones

  1330. learn them

  1331. speak them to yourself

  1332. when you're having

  1333. a shower

  1334. tell yourself

  1335. I'm a child of God

  1336. I'm accepted

  1337. I do not have

  1338. a spirit of slavery

  1339. to fear

  1340. when you're going

  1341. into the office

  1342. when you're going

  1343. to that interview

  1344. when you're going

  1345. to meet your boss

  1346. and you don't want

  1347. to meet your boss

  1348. at that moment

  1349. you can tell yourself

  1350. I do not have

  1351. a spirit of slavery

  1352. to fear

  1353. I have the spirit

  1354. of adoption

  1355. as a son

  1356. of the king

  1357. of the universe

  1358. I am secure

  1359. in him

  1360. I have nothing

  1361. to lose

  1362. I have nothing

  1363. to prove

  1364. he will provide

  1365. for me

  1366. entirely

  1367. I wonder

  1368. how many times

  1369. we actually

  1370. tell ourselves

  1371. those things

  1372. every day

  1373. because if you're

  1374. like me

  1375. I kind of know

  1376. that

  1377. but every day

  1378. I forget it

1379. when I'm in the moment

  1380. and we need

  1381. in our community

  1382. groups

  1383. to be people

  1384. who are enabling

  1385. each other

  1386. to put on those

  1387. spiritual headphones

  1388. of reminding

  1389. each other

  1390. who we are

  1391. because otherwise

  1392. we won't know

  1393. Christianity

  1394. very well

  1395. because we won't

  1396. know our father

  1397. very well

  1398. and the spirit's

  1399. voice will be

  1400. drowned out

  1401. next

  1402. and

  1403. we're nearly there

  1404. Christians

  1405. also

  1406. if you're

  1407. a child of God

  1408. you display

  1409. the family likeness

  1410. you know the phrase

  1411. like father

  1412. like son

  1413. I find that phrase

  1414. very scary

  1415. because

  1416. the older I get

  1417. the more I realize

1418. you know when I was a kid

  1419. my dad

1420. I always used to cringe

  1421. at the embarrassing things

1422. my dad used to say

  1423. as I get older

  1424. I hear myself

  1425. saying the same things

  1426. and it's frightening

  1427. but you know

  1428. that's the same thing

  1429. that should be true

  1430. of Christians

  1431. children of God

  1432. become like

  1433. their father

  1434. now here's the thing

  1435. here's the key thing

  1436. to remember

  1437. if you remember

  1438. nothing else

1439. I want you to remember

  1440. this

1441. in all of our lives

  1442. there are areas

  1443. where we live

  1444. as orphans

  1445. where we know

  1446. that we should be

  1447. living as children

  1448. of God

  1449. but if you want

  1450. to change

  1451. in your life

  1452. as a Christian

  1453. to live more

1454. as a child of God

  1455. you've got to

  1456. remember this

1457. if you are more aware

  1458. of your sin

  1459. in your life

  1460. than of God's

  1461. adopting grace

  1462. of you

  1463. you will only ever

  1464. be motivated

  1465. to change

  1466. out of fear

  1467. guilt

  1468. or desire

  1469. to prove yourself

  1470. let me repeat that

1471. if you are more aware

  1472. of your own sin

  1473. and guilt

  1474. and shame

  1475. in your life

  1476. than God's

  1477. adopting

  1478. fatherly grace

  1479. on you

  1480. then you will only

  1481. be motivated

  1482. out of guilt

  1483. or fear

  1484. or a sense

  1485. of desire

  1486. to prove yourself

  1487. because God's

  1488. adopting grace

  1489. if you want

  1490. to change

  1491. anything

  1492. in your life

  1493. and walk with God

  1494. that is the foundation

  1495. of it all

  1496. let's

  1497. let's

  1498. take an example

  1499. everyone's gossiping

  1500. at work

  1501. about one of your

  1502. colleagues

  1503. you know

  1504. she's

  1505. she's oversensitive

  1506. she's just

  1507. she's a slacker

1508. she doesn't do the work

  1509. she should do

  1510. and you know what

  1511. you kind of begin

  1512. to join in

  1513. with what everybody

  1514. else is saying

1515. why do we join in

  1516. well we don't want

  1517. to be left out

  1518. we want to belong

  1519. and you know what

  1520. there's nothing better

  1521. than helping you

  1522. to feel okay

  1523. about yourself

  1524. than by putting

  1525. somebody else down

  1526. so I mean

  1527. it works like that

  1528. doesn't it

  1529. you know

  1530. she's bad

  1531. that must mean

  1532. we're okay

  1533. yeah

  1534. well

  1535. at that moment

  1536. the spirit wants

  1537. to remind you

  1538. of who you are

  1539. you're a child

  1540. of God

  1541. children of God

  1542. don't have to gossip

  1543. because

  1544. you already belong

  1545. you don't need

  1546. to have some people

  1547. around you

  1548. to feel secure

  1549. because

  1550. I'm already

  1551. secure in Christ

  1552. I don't need

  1553. in this situation

  1554. to get involved

  1555. because children of God

  1556. don't gossip

  1557. they're like

  1558. their father

  1559. and so that

  1560. enables us

  1561. and that's what

  1562. Paul means

  1563. when in verse 14

  1564. he says

  1565. those who are led

  1566. by

  1567. so verse 13

  1568. those who are led

  1569. by the spirit

  1570. put to death

  1571. the flesh

  1572. because when you know

  1573. that you say

  1574. I'm a child of God

  1575. so I don't need

  1576. to do that

  1577. so I say no

1578. I'm not going to do that

1579. I'm not going to worry

1580. I'm not going to stress

1581. I'm not going to do

  1582. all those things

  1583. that naturally we do

  1584. when we're living

  1585. as orphans

  1586. because I know

  1587. who I am

  1588. and the spirit

  1589. is reminding me

  1590. I'm a child of God

  1591. if you don't know

  1592. that as the center

  1593. all other change

  1594. is just window dressing

1595. you need to put on

  1596. your spiritual headphones

1597. we need to do it

  1598. with each other

  1599. if you're in a community group

  1600. let that be

1601. one of the key things

  1602. that you're continually

  1603. telling each other

  1604. reminding each other

  1605. of who you are

  1606. last thing

  1607. and we're finishing here

  1608. children of God

  1609. look forward

  1610. to a bright future

  1611. you see

  1612. if I can find

  1613. the verse

  1614. it says

  1615. that we are not

  1616. just children

  1617. but we are also

  1618. heirs

  1619. verse 17

  1620. if children

  1621. then heirs

  1622. heirs of God

  1623. and fellow heirs

  1624. with Christ

  1625. provided we suffer

  1626. with him

  1627. in order that

  1628. we may be glorified

  1629. with him

  1630. there's too much

  1631. to go into

  1632. in this

  1633. but

  1634. what he's saying

  1635. is this

  1636. if you think

  1637. adoption of sons

  1638. is just about

  1639. you and your

  1640. relationship with God

  1641. you've got too

  1642. narrow a view

  1643. of adoption

  1644. verse 23

  1645. also goes on

  1646. to talk about

  1647. we are eagerly

  1648. waiting

  1649. we who have

  1650. the first fruits

  1651. of the spirit

  1652. grown inwardly

  1653. as we eagerly

  1654. wait for adoption

  1655. of sons

  1656. the redemption

  1657. of our bodies

1658. it was in this hope

  1659. that we were saved

  1660. because adoption

  1661. us getting right

  1662. with God

  1663. knowing who we are

  1664. is the beginning

  1665. of the process

  1666. of restoring everything

  1667. so in this

  1668. insecure world

  1669. of corruption

  1670. cancer

  1671. aging

  1672. rebellious kids

  1673. of women

  1674. trafficked

  1675. as objects

  1676. for sale

  1677. God says

  1678. there's going to

  1679. come a time

  1680. when those things

  1681. are a distant memory

  1682. I'm going to

  1683. wipe it out

  1684. I'm going to

  1685. restore

  1686. all the insecurity

  1687. in this world

  1688. all the tyrannical

  1689. bosses

  1690. all the unfair

  1691. market systems

  1692. it's going to be

1693. a thing of the past

  1694. and we will be

  1695. on the managing

  1696. committee

  1697. of the biggest

  1698. facelift

  1699. this world

  1700. has ever seen

  1701. God is going

  1702. to restore

  1703. everything

  1704. and we are going

  1705. to be those children

  1706. who inherit

  1707. the restored

  1708. creation

  1709. now if I'm honest

  1710. I probably

  1711. don't eagerly

  1712. wait for that

  1713. that often

  1714. because I often

  1715. more eagerly

  1716. wait for my

  1717. next holiday

  1718. or your next

  1719. job promotion

  1720. or the next

  1721. break from

  1722. your kids

  1723. or your work

  1724. or whatever

  1725. it is

  1726. but let me think

  1727. about this

  1728. Russell Moore

  1729. who mentioned

  1730. who we mentioned

  1731. earlier

  1732. he told when he

  1733. picked his two

  1734. new kids up

  1735. from the orphanage

1736. this is what he says

  1737. we nodded our

  1738. thanks to the

  1739. orphanage personnel

  1740. and walked out

  1741. into the sunlight

  1742. to the terror

  1743. of the two boys

  1744. they'd never seen

  1745. the sun

  1746. they'd never felt

  1747. the wind

  1748. they'd never heard

  1749. the sound

  1750. of a car door

  1751. slamming

  1752. or felt like

  1753. they were being

  1754. carried along

  1755. a road

  1756. at 100 miles

  1757. an hour

  1758. I noticed

  1759. that they were

  1760. shaking

  1761. and reaching

  1762. back to the

  1763. orphanage

  1764. in the distance

  1765. I whispered

  1766. to Sergei

  1767. now Timothy

  1768. that place

  1769. is a pit

  1770. if only you knew

  1771. what's waiting

  1772. for you

  1773. a home

  1774. with a mummy

  1775. and a daddy

  1776. who love you

  1777. grandparents

  1778. and great

  1779. grandparents

  1780. and cousins

  1781. and playmates

  1782. and McDonald's

  1783. Happy Meals

  1784. he's American

  1785. it's okay

  1786. but all they knew

  1787. was the orphanage

  1788. it was squalid

  1789. they had no other

  1790. reference point

  1791. it was home

  1792. that restored

  1793. creation

  1794. that we talk

  1795. about

  1796. that is our

  1797. home

  1798. and our lives

  1799. here are often

  1800. those of the

  1801. orphanage

  1802. but that's not

  1803. all

  1804. because in some

  1805. ways that may

  1806. seem just a

  1807. pipe dream away

  1808. but the Bible

  1809. says unlike

  1810. those orphans

  1811. we do have a

  1812. reference point

  1813. to that great

  1814. restoration

  1815. and that reference

  1816. point is your

  1817. experience now

  1818. of the Spirit

  1819. telling you

  1820. making you

  1821. secure

  1822. in who you

  1823. are in Christ

  1824. in his

  1825. adopting love

  1826. that when you

  1827. see the reality

  1828. of that

  1829. worked out

  1830. in your day

  1831. to day

  1832. when you're

  1833. facing your

  1834. fears

  1835. when you're

  1836. facing the

  1837. worries and the

  1838. stress

  1839. that is a

  1840. tangible sign

  1841. of something

  1842. that is going

  1843. to be so

  1844. much greater

  1845. later on

  1846. and I

  1847. wonder

  1848. for me

  1849. and maybe

  1850. for you

  1851. the reason I

  1852. feel that

  1853. hope of

  1854. restoration

  1855. is so

  1856. intangible

  1857. is because

  1858. my experience

  1859. now

  1860. of the

  1861. Spirit

  1862. reminding me

  1863. is often

  1864. intangible

  1865. because I've

  1866. grown busy

  1867. and distracted

  1868. and deaf

  1869. to the Spirit

  1870. telling me

  1871. that I'm

  1872. his child

  1873. if you're

  1874. a Christian

  1875. you're not

  1876. an orphan

  1877. you're a

  1878. child

  1879. if you're

  1880. not a

  1881. Christian

  1882. the call

  1883. is come

  1884. to know

  1885. your Father

  1886. know

  1887. security

  1888. in him

  1889. and let

  1890. us be

  1891. children

  1892. of him

  1893. who

  1894. continually

  1895. remind

  1896. each other

  1897. of that

  1898. fact

  1899. we need

  1900. spiritual

  1901. headphones

  1902. when you're

  1903. in distress

  1904. we have

  1905. somewhere

  1906. to run

  1907. to

  1908. we have

  1909. someone

  1910. who

  1911. listens

  1912. we have

  1913. a witness

  1914. telling us

  1915. again and

  1916. again

  1917. don't fear

  1918. you're not

  1919. a slave

  1920. to fear

  1921. you're a

  1922. child of

  1923. God

  1924. let's pray

  1925. Father I pray

  1926. that you

  1927. would

  1928. take

  1929. these things

  1930. and think

  1931. in our

  1932. lives

  1933. Lord

  1934. where

  1935. some of

  1936. us know

  1937. this

  1938. but

  1939. actually

  1940. there are

  1941. so many

  1942. areas

  1943. in our

  1944. lives

  1945. where we

  1946. don't

  1947. live

  1948. this

  1949. I know

  1950. that's

  1951. true for

  1952. me

  1953. I pray

  1954. for each

  1955. one of

  1956. us

  1957. that you

  1958. show us

  1959. those areas

  1960. in our

  1961. lives

  1962. where we

  1963. actually do

  1964. live in

  1965. fear of

  1966. other

  1967. people

  1968. we live

  1969. in fear

  1970. of

  1971. circumstances

  1972. and you

  1973. show us

  1974. and you

  1975. speak to

  1976. us

  1977. again

  1978. that we're

  1979. secure

  1980. that you'll

  1981. provide

  1982. that you're

  1983. in charge

  1984. that we

  1985. don't have to

  1986. fix everything

  1987. by ourselves

  1988. you're the

  1989. one who

  1990. takes it

  1991. and will

  1992. make us

  1993. fully restored

  1994. one day

  1995. and in that

  1996. meantime

  1997. you are

  1998. as we

  1999. wrestle with

  2000. being an

  2001. orphan

  2002. with living

  2003. as a child

  2004. of God

  2005. in a world

  2006. which calls

  2007. us to be

  2008. an orphan

  2009. I pray

  2010. that you

  2011. would just

  2012. continually

  2013. speak

  2014. those words

  2015. of comfort

  2016. to us

  2017. Amen
