  1. I, some of you know that I used to have hair that went down to my waist, down to my belt,

  2. and a big bushy beard sort of looking like a cross between, I don't know, somebody with

  3. really long hair and Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

  4. And I used to be sort of very much into radical politics, and I've demonstrated in my wayward

  5. youth, I've demonstrated on Parliament Hill and on the Spark Street Mall and in front of

  6. the War Memorial and Department of National Defense Headquarters and in front of embassies,

  7. and I'm probably missing some, oh, Queen's Park, I can't forget Queen's Park.

  8. And I have to, if I was doing confession to you folks, I'd say, you know what, I was probably

  9. wrong on virtually every issue as well, but that's a whole topic for another sermon.

  10. But one time, and I have repented of some of those things, you know, just one thing, you

  11. know, I think that more Vietnamese people died in the first year of Viet Cong rule, in the

  12. first two years of Viet Cong rule, more Vietnamese people died than in decades of civil war.

  13. And I just, every time I think about it, I repent of demonstrating against that war, but

  14. that's a whole other topic of conversation.

  15. One time, I was with, at a demonstration in front of the Department of National Defense

  16. headquarters, and very few people showed up, but the press showed up.

  17. And this is like 29 years ago or something like that, a long time ago, and the press,

  18. the reporter and the photographer were very sympathetic to us.

  19. So they said to us, after they'd interviewed us, they said, listen, if you folks could just

  20. sort of demonstrate in this type, just line yourselves up this way, and we'll stand with

  21. our camera here, and that'll make it look like there's lots of people demonstrating.

  22. And we went along with it.

  23. And sure enough, in the press, they gave us a very, very favorable view, gave us exaggerated

  24. numbers, and the picture gave us exaggerated numbers.

  25. And I thought about that a lot this week, as there's been lots of things in the press about

  26. how the press has been lying, with a lot of its pictures about what went on in Lebanon,

  27. and how it's been distorted.

  28. And you know, there's nothing new under the sun.

  29. That's what the book of Ecclesiastes said a long time ago.

  30. And today, in our ninth of our ten sermons on the Ten Commandments, we come to the commandment

  31. that says, you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

  32. And the false witness, it could also be said, you shall not bear untruthful witness about

  33. your neighbor.

  34. You shall not lie, give a lying witness about your neighbor.

  35. You shall not do anything which is a falsehood, an untruth, or a lie.

  36. And as I was thinking about how to try to preach about this today, I was thinking at first,

  37. you know, I could try to deal with how do you do this and this and this and different examples

  38. and stuff.

  39. And then it really struck me in prayer.

  40. You know, we are inundated in our social context with a culture that violates this all the time.

  41. Like, how many of us believe the advertising?

  42. I'm not going to pick on anybody here, folks.

  43. This isn't like, you know, radical politics 101 revisited George Havina, you know, now that

  44. he's turned 50, pretending he's young again and ranting against the man or anything like

  45. that.

  46. But, you know, you think about it, you know, advertisements, you know, by their very nature

  47. are trying to make things look far better often than they really are.

  48. And they're trying to convince us of needs that we don't really have or tell us that we

  49. have needs that we don't really have.

  50. And how many of us really believe the politicians when they speak?

  51. And how many of us believe everything that we hear in newspapers and televisions?

  52. And to be honest, how much do we believe what's said by our leaders or by our church?

  53. And on and on and on and on.

  54. And in fact, we are completely and utterly inundated because very few cultures in the

  55. history of the of the earth have been as bombarded with words and images as ours.

  56. I mean, you think about it in Jesus's time or in Moses's time when the Ten Commandments

  57. were said.

  58. I mean, there could have been little nomadic tribes that other than the couple of people

  59. in the family, they would have seen nobody or no no image other than just natural world.

  60. And they could maybe go weeks and weeks and months and years, maybe being in the desert

  61. or being in other places and seeing virtually no people.

  62. And our culture, we are completely and utterly inundated with words, with songs, with images.

  63. And in the midst of all of this, time after time after time, our culture wants to exaggerate,

  64. manipulate, undercut, tell a lie, slander, position themselves this way, spin this, spin

  65. that, spin that.

  66. And then it dawned on me, you know, we live in a culture which is so much at variance often

  67. with this commandment that we are inevitably blunted to the force of this commandment.

  68. And so I said to myself, how on earth can I unblunt myself?

  69. Well, let's look at Jesus.

  70. And I'm going to take a bit of a risk today.

  71. Those of you who are in our TESO, I am doing, I'm going to flunk Sermon 101 by having us jump

  72. around in the Bible, and I'm going to start backwards in the Gospel of John.

  73. So you need your Bibles this morning for sure.

  74. If you haven't brought your own, use the Pew Bible.

  75. We're going to look at the end of John's Gospel, close to the ends of John's Gospel, and we're

  76. going to work backwards from this.

  77. John's Gospel is constantly mentioning the truth.

  78. I think true or truth is mentioned, I don't know, it's like 30 times, lots and lots of times

  79. in John's Gospel.

  80. But we're going to begin with one of the last times that truth is mentioned in John's

  81. Gospel, and it's right towards the end.

  82. It's John chapter 18, verse 37.

    John 18:37

  83. And it's page 939 if you're using your Pew Bibles.

  84. And this is the famous story, famous for Christians, of Jesus before Pilate.

  85. And Jesus is before Pilate in a sense.

  86. He is before Rome.

  87. And Roman power, secular power, is standing before Jesus.

  88. He's being examined.

  89. His life is hanging in the balance.

  90. And this is how the conversation continues.

  91. Pilate therefore said to him, verse 37,

  92. Are you a king then?

  93. Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king.

  94. Now listen to this.

  95. This is really significant.

  96. Jesus is on trial before Rome.

  97. And he is on trial before the civil power.

  98. And listen to how he describes his purpose to Rome.

  99. For this cause I was born.

  100. This is why I was born.

  101. For this cause I have come into the world.

  102. This is why I have come.

  103. That I should bear witness to the truth.

  104. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice.

  105. Pilate said to him, What is truth?

  106. What is truth?

  107. And then Pilate just figures out ways the balance of this probability and that probability.

  108. And then he has Jesus put to death.

  109. Jesus' purpose is to witness to the truth.

  110. And given that that is one of Jesus' purposes, it should be one of ours.

  111. And we see in this text the murderous purposes and the harmful purposes that come when we ask the question,

  112. What is truth?

  113. And dismiss it and choose something which is untruth as the way that is going to guide our behavior.

  114. And to choose that which is untruth as the way forward effortlessly and easily coexists with murderous intent.

  115. And we see it perfectly put to the person of Jesus.

  116. John 17, 17.

  117. This is the reason I'm saying that.

  118. I'm flunking Sermon 101.

  119. We're looking at seven of the key texts.

  120. And I'm not going to spend a long time in each of them.

  121. It's just a matter of trying to bring us before the word of God time after time after time.

  122. And by going beginning at the end and moving to the beginning, see how the truth is constantly pushed to us.

  123. And the truth is trying to, God who speaks truth to us is trying to clarify what we should understand as truth.

  124. Inflame within us a desire for that which is true.

  125. Inflame within us a repulsion of that which is lie and untruth and falsehood.

  126. In a sense, the scripture here can heal us.

  127. Or can begin the process of healing us.

  128. John 17, 17.

  129. It's just the page earlier.

  130. It's page 937 if you're using your pew Bibles.

  131. Those of you who are familiar with the gospels will know that this is John's gospel.

  132. 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 are all Jesus' final words to his disciples.

  133. It's Maundy Thursday.

  134. Shortly after Jesus says these words, he's going to be betrayed by Judas.

  135. He is going to be brought up on false charges.

  136. And I don't know what it is, 12 hours or something like that, or 16 hours after this event,

  137. Pilate is going to say, what is truth?

  138. And have Jesus crucified.

  139. And Jesus here ends his words with his disciples by what is called the high priestly prayer.

  140. It's Jesus praying for his disciples.

  141. Friends, if you are in Jesus, he's praying for you.

  142. If you want to have a bit of a sense as to how does Jesus intercede to the Father for you and me, listen to this.

  143. You know, if you can just imagine Jesus up there in heaven all the time, he's saying,

  144. Oh, Father, this is what I hope for George.

  145. This is what I hope for the people of St. Albans who have come to know me.

  146. This is what I hope for my followers and my friends and my disciples here on earth.

  147. And listen to what Jesus says, what he prays.

  148. Verse 17 of chapter 17.

  149. Sanctify them by your truth.

  150. Your word is truth.

  151. Sanctify them by your truth.

  152. Your word is truth.

  153. Sanctify means to become holy.

  154. It means to become set aside for God to use us as we desire.

  155. It means that not only are we his precious treasure and his precious possession,

  156. but that we become more and more one that God can use us as he desires,

  157. and that we more and more can say, not my will, but your will be done in my life.

  158. And that's the heart of sanctity.

  159. And here we see that God is truth.

  160. Sanctify them by the truth.

  161. Your word is truth.

  162. God can only speak the truth.

  163. If God had a DNA, truth is part of God's DNA.

  164. There is nothing in God that is not true.

  165. He is true in his judgment, in his mercy.

  166. He is pure, unadulterated, unending truth.

  167. And so to become like God, to be set aside for God's use,

  168. is to have to know the truth,

  169. and to be in the truth, and to be people of the truth.

  170. Those of you who are in university,

  171. and many university professors mockingly say,

  172. like a pilot, what is truth?

  173. Do not despair.

  174. All the professors, and all the theologians, and all the editorial writers,

  175. and all of the people in the world can say what is truth,

  176. but God is truth, and that cannot stop that.

  177. And it's woven right into the fabric of the universe.

  178. Do not despair.

  179. Seek truth.

  180. The third thing.

  181. John 16, verse 13.

    John 16:13

  182. We don't have to even turn our pages if you're using the Pew Bibles.

  183. John 16, verse 13.

    John 16:13

  184. And here's Jesus still in the upper room,

  185. still his final moments of teaching with his disciples.

  186. And here Jesus says,

  187. Listen again to the first part of the verse.

  188. Friends, the Holy Spirit has come.

  189. Hallelujah.

  190. Isn't that fantastic?

  191. The Holy Spirit has come.

  192. Jesus did triumph over sin and death and hell and the evil one,

  193. and he poured out his Holy Spirit upon those who are his people.

  194. Not only is the Holy Spirit come,

  195. the Holy Spirit is the one who is in our midst.

  196. And he only leads one way.

  197. He only leads towards truth.

  198. To choose untruth,

  199. to choose lies,

  200. to choose falsehoods,

  201. to choose slander,

  202. to choose exaggeration,

  203. to choose flattery,

  204. to choose character assassination,

  205. to choose any of these things

  206. is to step out of the Holy Spirit.

  207. It is to quench the Holy Spirit.

  208. It is to resist the Holy Spirit.

  209. It is to feed a contrary impulse

  210. than what the Holy Spirit is trying to put into us.

  211. It would be as if we go to a doctor

  212. who's giving us medicine to heal us,

  213. and then at the same time,

  214. as soon as we leave the doctor

  215. who's putting in medicine to heal us,

  216. we immediately go across the street

  217. to take poison to kill us.

  218. And the Holy Spirit is like the doctor

  219. who is in our lives,

  220. moving in our lives,

  221. and he moves in our lives

  222. to foster within us

  223. a longing for truth,

  224. a yearning for truth,

  225. a desire for truth.

  226. He heals us

  227. so that we can start to recognize

  228. what is lie and falsehood and untruth

  229. and what is truth,

  230. to hunger for truth,

  231. to be able to receive truth,

  232. to be able to speak truth,

  233. to live by truth.

  234. That's the direction of the Holy Spirit.

  235. There's no other direction that he has.

  236. The fourth text,

  237. John 14, verse 6.

    John 14:6

  238. Those of you who are Bible scholars

  239. know that that's the verse

  240. that I just quoted to the little children

  241. before I prayed to them.

  242. It's on page 934,

  243. John 14, verse 6.

    John 14:6

  244. And here we see Jesus

  245. talking about himself.

  246. As I said,

  247. he's describing himself,

  248. and he says to his disciples,

  249. he's still in the upper room,

  250. final teaching with his disciples,

  251. he says,

  252. I am the way,

  253. the truth,

  254. and the life.

  255. No one comes to the Father

  256. except through me.

  257. Jesus said to him,

  258. that's Thomas,

  259. who's asked him a question,

  260. I am the way,

  261. the truth,

  262. and the life.

  263. No one comes to the Father

  264. except through me.

  265. You know,

  266. one of the first names

  267. for the Christians,

  268. or one of the first ways

  269. that the Christians

  270. described themselves,

  271. if you read the book of Acts,

  272. is that they were followers

  273. of the way.

  274. That's who they were.

  275. They were followers

  276. of the way.

  277. And in a sense,

  278. this text then

  279. is asking us to choose,

  280. to we choose

  281. to be people of the way

  282. or people not of the way.

  283. And if we choose

  284. to be people of the way,

  285. we are choosing

  286. to be people of the truth.

  287. And we cannot choose

  288. to be people of the lie,

  289. people of the untruth,

  290. people of the falsehood.

  291. We are invited

  292. to be the people

  293. of the truth.

  294. And like God,

  295. the Father,

  296. Jesus is only truth.

  297. You know,

  298. I could try to describe

  299. to you complicated

  300. ethical dilemmas.

  301. You know,

  302. what do you do

  303. if the Nazis

  304. are knocking on your door

  305. and you're hiding

  306. Jewish people?

  307. You know,

  308. gosh,

  309. I'm a fallen human being

  310. and I live

  311. in a fallen world

  312. and I don't possess

  313. the wisdom of Jesus

  314. and I don't possess

  315. the foresight of Jesus

  316. and I don't abide

  317. in the Father's will

  318. like Jesus does.

  319. And Jesus,

  320. because he's pure truth

  321. and not only pure truth,

  322. but purely

  323. and utterly obedient

  324. to his heavenly Father

  325. and purely

  326. and utterly obedient

  327. to the leading

  328. and the guiding

  329. of the Holy Spirit

  330. and pure goodness

  331. and all of those things.

  332. I mean,

  333. you know,

  334. he just went through

  335. his life

  336. that there was nothing

  337. ever that he did

  338. that was in contradiction

  339. between mercy

  340. and justice

  341. and love

  342. and goodness

  343. and purity

  344. and the truth

  345. and all of those things

  346. and we're disjointed

  347. and broken people

  348. until we come

  349. to know Jesus

  350. and throw our lives

  351. into his hands

  352. and trust him

  353. and ask the Holy Spirit

  354. to start to work

  355. a work of healing

  356. in our lives

  357. and submit to his word

  358. that we can start

  359. to be healed

  360. and all I want to tell you,

  361. I'm not going to try

  362. to analyze

  363. for you complex

  364. moral questions.

  365. I'm going to say to you

  366. that Jesus is the way,

  367. the truth,

  368. and the life

  369. and that truth

  370. is not thin

  371. or narrow

  372. or abstract

  373. or disjointed

  374. but when Jesus says

  375. that he is the way,

  376. the truth,

  377. and the life,

  378. he is telling us

  379. that the truth is real,

  380. that it is pure,

  381. that it is thick,

  382. it is deep,

  383. it is powerful,

  384. it is living,

  385. and it is a person.

  386. In a sense,

  387. the truth is a face,

  388. the face

  389. that we were built

  390. to know,

  391. the face

  392. that we truly

  393. were made

  394. to long for

  395. and yearn for,

  396. that everything

  397. within us

  398. was designed

  399. that we would see

  400. the face of God

  401. through the person

  402. and the face

  403. of Jesus Christ

  404. and friends,

  405. I urge you

  406. to do what you need

  407. to do

  408. to be right with God

  409. so that at the end

  410. of your life

  411. when you appear

  412. face to face

  413. with God,

  414. you will see

  415. the face of Jesus

  416. and see him smile

  417. and you will say

  418. to him,

  419. I have been longing

  420. to see you

  421. all of my life

  422. and he will say

  423. to you,

  424. well done,

  425. my good and faithful servant,

  426. come into the kingdom

  427. prepared for you

  428. from all eternity.

  429. The fifth passage

  430. of scripture

  431. tells us

  432. of that,

  433. of another face

  434. and it's John

    John 8:44

  435. chapter 8

  436. verse 44,

  437. it's page 928

  438. and gosh,

  439. this is a powerful text,

  440. it's part of a

  441. controversy

  442. with the religious leaders,

  443. the leaders

  444. of culture,

  445. the leaders

  446. of religion,

  447. the people

  448. who get on the cover

  449. of People magazine,

  450. the movers

  451. and the shakers

  452. of Jerusalem

  453. and at the end

  454. of this long conversation

  455. in verse 59,

  456. they took up stones

  457. to throw at him

  458. because they wanted

  459. to kill him

  460. and here's what

  461. Jesus says to them

  462. in verse 44,

  463. talking to these people,

  464. you are of your father

  465. the devil

  466. and the desires

  467. of your father

  468. you want to do.

  469. He was a murderer

  470. from the beginning

  471. and does not stand

  472. in the truth

  473. because there is

  474. no truth in him.

  475. When he speaks

  476. a lie,

  477. he speaks

  478. from his own resources

  479. according to his own nature

  480. for he is a liar

  481. and the father

  482. of lies.

  483. Whoa!

  484. Listen to that again.

  485. You are of your father

  486. the devil

  487. and the desires

  488. of your father

  489. you want to do.

  490. In fact,

  491. these are the people

  492. who are going to conspire

  493. with false charges

  494. to have Jesus

  495. put to death

  496. and are going to

  497. put pressure

  498. on a man

  499. who says,

  500. what is truth?

  501. So that he will agree

  502. to have Jesus

  503. put to death.

  504. He is completely

  505. and utterly bang on.

  506. You are of your father

  507. the devil

  508. and the desires

  509. of your father

  510. you want to do.

  511. He was a murderer

  512. from the beginning

  513. and does not stand

  514. in the truth

  515. because there is

  516. no truth in him.

  517. When he speaks a lie

  518. he speaks

  519. really I should say

  520. he speaks his own

  521. native language.

  522. He speaks according

  523. to his nature

  524. for he is a liar

  525. and the father

  526. of lies.

  527. To choose untruth

  528. to choose lies

  529. or falsehoods

  530. slander

  531. character assassination

  532. to use language

  533. to manipulate

  534. to belittle

  535. to hurt

  536. is to step

  537. towards hostile

  538. spiritual powers

  539. and persons.

  540. It does not mean

  541. in this text

  542. that every time

  543. one of us

  544. say we have a lie

  545. or an untruth

  546. we have a demon

  547. not saying that at all

  548. but it does mean

  549. that demons

  550. always lie

  551. and those

  552. who are afflicted

  553. with the demonic

  554. harassed

  555. by demons

  556. oppressed

  557. by demons

  558. possessed

  559. by demons

  560. believe lies

  561. and tell lies

  562. and that when

  563. we lie

  564. and tell untruth

  565. we are not

  566. learning the language

  567. of heaven

  568. but the language

  569. of the demonic.

  570. That's a very hard word

  571. and friends

  572. before we leave this

  573. let me tell you this

  574. those of you

  575. who have ever had

  576. any dealings

  577. with the demonic

  578. demons always

  579. begin by telling you

  580. something like

  581. come with me

  582. and you will be

  583. like God

  584. and they end

  585. when they have

  586. power in you

  587. by telling you

  588. you are worse

  589. than dirt

  590. and you are

  591. completely

  592. and utterly

  593. under my thumb

  594. and to leave me

  595. who is really God

  596. will be the end

  597. of you.

  598. Jesus says

  599. come to me

  600. all who are broken

  601. and heavy hearted

  602. and weary

  603. and I will give you rest

  604. take my yoke upon you

  605. and learn from me

  606. for I am gentle

  607. and humble of heart

  608. and you will find rest

  609. for your soul

  610. for my yoke is easy

  611. and my burden is light

  612. and the work of Jesus

  613. in our lives

  614. is sometimes

  615. he confronts us

  616. of our brokenness

  617. sometimes he comes

  618. to us in despair

  619. sometimes he comes

  620. to us in the midst

  621. of consciousness

  622. of sin

  623. time after time

  624. he comes to us

  625. when we feel

  626. that things are

  627. out of control

  628. and that maybe

  629. we are worse than dust

  630. and about to be

  631. oppressed

  632. and destroyed

  633. or broken

  634. by powers

  635. far greater than us

  636. and Jesus

  637. comes to us

  638. unlike a demon

  639. and reaches down

  640. to us

  641. in that state

  642. of affairs

  643. and when we place

  644. our hands

  645. in his

  646. we find this

  647. wonderful

  648. unbelievable

  649. shocking

  650. pronouncement

  651. you will be

  652. like me

  653. the most broken

  654. person

  655. the most sinful

  656. person

  657. the weakest

  658. person

  659. you like me

  660. will be like

  661. Jesus

  662. not by works

  663. but by grace

  664. those lies

  665. are terrible

  666. folks

  667. just in the same

  668. passage

  669. the same

  670. conversation

  671. John chapter 8

    John 8:32

  672. verse 32

  673. and you know

  674. one of the things

  675. I found

  676. is when I was

  677. working backwards

  678. in John

  679. earlier things

  680. in John

  681. made more

  682. and more sense

  683. you're able

  684. to understand

  685. things

  686. in the case

  687. of John's

  688. gospel

  689. when you know

  690. the end

  691. and you go

  692. backwards

  693. you can understand

  694. the beginning

  695. better and better

  696. and better

  697. and listen

  698. to what

  699. John

  700. Jesus says

  701. oh you have

  702. to turn the page

  703. John chapter 8

    John 8:32

  704. verse 32

  705. and you shall

  706. know the truth

  707. and the truth

  708. shall make you

  709. free

  710. come to me

  711. all who labor

  712. and are heavy laden

  713. and I will give you

  714. rest

  715. take my yoke

  716. upon you

  717. and learn from me

  718. for I am gentle

  719. and lowly of heart

  720. and you will find

  721. rest for your souls

  722. for my yoke

  723. is easy

  724. and my burden

  725. is light

  726. truth here

  727. we now see

  728. is more than

  729. two plus two

  730. equals four

  731. but even

  732. tiny tiny

  733. tiny truths

  734. like that

  735. give us some

  736. freedom

  737. no if you're

  738. in Canada

  739. and you can't

  740. read

  741. and you can't

  742. count

  743. you aren't

  744. free

  745. even

  746. abstract

  747. thin

  748. narrow

  749. truths

  750. give us

  751. freedom

  752. but the deeper

  753. the truth

  754. the deeper

  755. the freedom

  756. and friends

  757. you and I

  758. we are very

  759. deep

  760. God has

  761. created us

  762. not to be

  763. shallow

  764. but we

  765. in our

  766. very nature

  767. are very

  768. deep

  769. and we

  770. need

  771. deep

  772. truth

  773. not thin

  774. narrow

  775. abstract

  776. little

  777. bits

  778. and pieces

  779. of truth

  780. we need

  781. deep

  782. truth

  783. because

  784. we are

  785. deep

  786. and there

  787. is nothing

  788. deeper than

  789. God

  790. who is

  791. truth

  792. nothing

  793. deeper than

  794. God

  795. who is

  796. truth

  797. friends

  798. one of the

  799. purposes

  800. of the

  801. ten

  802. commandments

  803. there's two

  804. purposes

  805. in the

  806. ten

  807. commandments

  808. the ten

  809. commandments

  810. are the

  811. outline

  812. of sanity

  813. and they

  814. are the

  815. outline of

  816. sanity

  817. the outline

  818. of freedom

  819. the outline

  820. of truth

  821. the outline

  822. of hope

  823. they are

  824. the outline

  825. of sanity

  826. and for

  827. those of

  828. us who

  829. have not

  830. yet come

  831. to know

  832. Jesus

  833. the fundamental

  834. purpose of

  835. the ten

  836. commandments

  837. is to

  838. make us

  839. realize that

  840. we need

  841. a savior

  842. like you

  843. take this

  844. one here

  845. even this

  846. ninth

  847. commandment

  848. and maybe

  849. you hear

  850. this commandment

  851. and you say

  852. okay from

  853. now on

  854. I'm only

  855. going to

  856. speak the

  857. truth

  858. know the

  859. truth

  860. love the

  861. truth

  862. yearn for

  863. the truth

  864. and if you

  865. even made

  866. that commitment

  867. today it would

  868. not take

  869. very long

  870. if you have

  871. any type

  872. of self

  873. examination

  874. before you

  875. fail

  876. but even

  877. if you had

  878. sufficient

  879. power to

  880. somehow or

  881. another only

  882. live in the

  883. truth for the

  884. rest of your

  885. life what

  886. would possibly

  887. atone for

  888. the lies and

  889. the deceptions

  890. that have

  891. characterized

  892. your life

  893. for the last

  894. in my case

  895. 50 years

  896. nothing that

  897. I can do

  898. can atone

  899. for that

  900. or change

  901. that

  902. and so the

  903. commandments

  904. are pushing

  905. us when we

  906. see what

  907. sanity means

  908. and our

  909. inability to

  910. hit sanity

  911. by ourselves

  912. to finally

  913. call out to

  914. God and

  915. say God

  916. I need

  917. a savior

  918. and then

  919. Jesus says

  920. I am the

  921. way and the

  922. truth and the

  923. life come to

  924. me all who

  925. labor and are

  926. heavy laden and

  927. I will give you

  928. rest take my

  929. yoke upon you

  930. and learn from

  931. me for I am

  932. gentle and

  933. humble of heart

  934. and you will

  935. find rest for

  936. your souls

  937. for my yoke is

  938. easy and my

  939. burden is light

  940. for those of us

  941. who have come to

  942. the person of

  943. Jesus trusting

  944. him as our

  945. savior committing

  946. to follow him

  947. as Lord and

  948. open to the

  949. Holy Spirit

  950. then we have

  951. here before us

  952. the outline of

  953. what it is

  954. how it is

  955. that we are

  956. to live

  957. how are we

  958. to live as

  959. people of the

  960. truth and not

  961. as people of

  962. the lie

  963. learning the

  964. language of

  965. heaven not

  966. the language

  967. of demons

  968. learning that

  969. to love God

  970. who is truth

  971. learning the

  972. truth is deep

  973. and so there

  974. is within us

  975. here something

  976. that can

  977. that's why

  978. the prayer

  979. book go back

  980. and read page

  981. 68 and 69

  982. of the book

  983. of common

  984. prayer the

  985. little red

  986. books in

  987. your pews

  988. and after

  989. every one

  990. of the

  991. commandments

  992. there is

  993. a prayer

  994. and the

  995. prayer is

  996. Lord have

  997. mercy upon

  998. us and

  999. incline our

  1000. hearts to

  1001. keep this

  1002. law

  1003. praise God

  1004. final one

  1005. and this

  1006. all I can

  1007. really say

  1008. this really

  1009. all it teaches

  1010. us is to

  1011. adore

  1012. just to

  1013. adore

  1014. this

  1015. final passage

  1016. is just

  1017. teaching us

  1018. to be

  1019. thankful

  1020. to adore

  1021. God

  1022. to meditate

  1023. upon his

  1024. son Jesus

  1025. Christ

  1026. to understand

  1027. that Jesus

  1028. is not only

  1029. full of truth

  1030. but he's full

  1031. of grace

  1032. that there's no

  1033. contradiction

  1034. between truth

  1035. and grace

  1036. between truth

  1037. and love

  1038. but that Jesus

  1039. is only grace

  1040. only mercy

  1041. only truth

  1042. and that he

  1043. comes to be

  1044. amongst us

  1045. so that we

  1046. might know

  1047. the grace

  1048. and the truth

  1049. of God

  1050. through the

  1051. mercy of God

  1052. he comes to

  1053. us

  1054. so that we

  1055. may say

  1056. yes to

  1057. him

  1058. and by

  1059. saying yes

  1060. to him

  1061. that we

  1062. might learn

  1063. to adore

  1064. John chapter

  1065. one

  1066. verse 14

  1067. actually you

  1068. know what

  1069. I think we

  1070. have time

  1071. we're going

  1072. to begin

  1073. verse one

  1074. John chapter

  1075. one

  1076. verse one

  1077. the beginning

  1078. of the gospel

  1079. see sometimes

  1080. it's worth it

  1081. to read the

  1082. book backwards

  1083. in the beginning

  1084. was the word

  1085. and the word

  1086. was with God

  1087. and the word

  1088. was God

  1089. he was in

  1090. the beginning

  1091. with God

  1092. all things

  1093. were made

  1094. through him

  1095. without him

  1096. nothing was

  1097. made that was

  1098. made

  1099. in him

  1100. was life

  1101. and the life

  1102. was the light

  1103. of men

  1104. and women

  1105. and the light

  1106. shines in the

  1107. darkness

  1108. and the darkness

  1109. did not comprehend

  1110. it

  1111. there was a man

  1112. sent from God

  1113. whose name

  1114. was John

  1115. this man

  1116. came for a

  1117. witness

  1118. to bear witness

  1119. of the light

  1120. that all through

  1121. him might believe

  1122. he was not

  1123. that light

  1124. but was sent

  1125. to bear witness

  1126. of that light

  1127. that light

  1128. was the true light

  1129. which gives light

  1130. to every man

1131. who comes into the world

  1132. that light

  1133. was in the world

  1134. and the world

  1135. was made through him

  1136. and the world

  1137. did not know him

  1138. that light

  1139. that word

  1140. came to his own

  1141. and his own

  1142. did not receive him

  1143. but as many

  1144. as received him

  1145. that word

  1146. that light

  1147. as many

  1148. as received him

  1149. to them

  1150. he gave

  1151. the right

  1152. to become

  1153. children of God

  1154. even to those

  1155. who believe

  1156. in his name

  1157. who are born

  1158. these new

  1159. children

  1160. not of blood

  1161. nor of the will

  1162. of the flesh

  1163. nor of the will

  1164. of man

  1165. but of God

  1166. and the word

  1167. became flesh

  1168. and dwelt

  1169. among us

  1170. and we beheld

  1171. his glory

  1172. the glory

  1173. as of the only

  1174. begotten

  1175. of the father

  1176. full of grace

  1177. and truth

  1178. John bore

  1179. witness of him

  1180. and cried out

  1181. saying

  1182. this was he

  1183. of whom I said

  1184. he who comes

  1185. after me

  1186. he has preferred

  1187. before me

  1188. for he was

  1189. before me

  1190. and of his

  1191. fullness

  1192. we have all

  1193. received

  1194. grace

  1195. for grace

  1196. for the law

  1197. was given

  1198. through Moses

  1199. but grace

  1200. and truth

  1201. came through

  1202. Jesus Christ

  1203. no one

  1204. has seen

  1205. God

  1206. at any time

  1207. the only

  1208. begotten son

  1209. who is in the

  1210. bosom of the

  1211. father

  1212. he has declared

  1213. him

  1214. let us pray

  1215. loving father

  1216. we thank

  1217. and praise

  1218. you that you

  1219. are filled

  1220. with mercy

  1221. that you

  1222. see us

  1223. in our

  1224. time of

  1225. deepest need

  1226. and you

  1227. do not

  1228. despise us

  1229. belittle us

  1230. but that you

  1231. send your

  1232. you sent your

  1233. son

  1234. you send

  1235. your son

  1236. to us

  1237. as the

  1238. savior

  1239. loving father

  1240. may your son

  1241. truly be

  1242. our savior

  1243. may

  1244. we entrust

  1245. our lives

  1246. to him

  1247. and may

  1248. your holy

  1249. spirit

  1250. spirit

  1251. move and

  1252. work in

  1253. our lives

  1254. leading us

  1255. to a full

  1256. confidence

  1257. in your

  1258. word

  1259. a healing

  1260. of mind

  1261. and heart

  1262. and will

  1263. fan into flame

  1264. within us

  1265. father

  1266. a deep

  1267. longing

  1268. and yearning

  1269. for the

  1270. truth
