  1. The book of Luke, chapter 15, on page 1048.

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  2. And we're going to be thinking together about what will be for many of us a very familiar parable.

  3. From verse 11 onwards, but we're going to read the whole chapter.

  4. The parable of our generous, joyful God.

  5. So Luke 15, page 1048, beginning at verse 1.

  6. Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering round to hear him.

  7. But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered,

  8. This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.

  9. Then Jesus told them this parable.

  10. Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them.

  11. Does he not leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it?

  12. And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home.

  13. Then he calls his friends and neighbours together and says,

  14. Rejoice with me, I have found my lost sheep.

  15. I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents

  16. than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.

  17. Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one.

  18. Does she not light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?

  19. And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbours together and says,

  20. Rejoice with me, I have found my lost coin.

  21. In the same way I tell you there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God

  22. over one sinner who repents.

  23. Jesus continued,

  24. Jesus continued,

  25. There was a man who had two sons.

  26. The younger one said to his father,

  27. Father, give me my share of the estate.

  28. So he divided his property between them.

  29. Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had,

  30. set off for a distant country,

  31. and there squandered his wealth and wild living.

  32. After he had spent everything,

  33. there was a severe famine in that whole country,

  34. and he began to be in need.

  35. So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country

  36. who sent him to his fields to feed pigs.

  37. He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating,

  38. but no one gave him anything.

  39. When he came to his senses, he said,

  40. How many of my father's hired men have food to spare,

  41. and here I am starving to death.

  42. I will set out and go back to my father and say to him,

  43. Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

  44. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  45. Make me like one of your hired men.

  46. So he got up and went to his father,

  47. but while he was still a long way off,

  48. his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him.

  49. He ran to his son, threw his arms around him, and kissed him.

  50. The son said to him,

  51. Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you.

  52. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.

  53. But the father said to his servants,

  54. Quick, bring the best robe and put it on him.

  55. And put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet.

  56. Bring the fattened calf and kill it.

  57. Let's have a feast and celebrate,

  58. for this son of mine was dead and is alive again.

  59. He was lost and is found.

  60. So they began to celebrate.

  61. Meanwhile, the older son was in the field.

  62. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing.

  63. So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on.

  64. Your brother has come, he replied,

  65. And your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.

  66. The older brother became angry and refused to go in.

  67. So his father went out and pleaded with him.

  68. But he answered his father,

  69. Look, all these years I've been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders.

  70. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends.

  71. But when this son of yours, who has squandered your property with prostitutes, comes home,

  72. you kill the fattened calf for him.

  73. My son, the father said,

  74. You are always with me and everything I have is yours.

  75. But we had to celebrate and be glad

  76. because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again.

  77. He was lost and is found.

  78. Stories are powerful things, aren't they?

  79. Salman Rushdie, the author,

  80. said that those who do not have the power over the story that dominates their lives

  81. truly are powerless because they cannot think new thoughts.

  82. And if we were to ask someone who was always told,

  83. You'll never amount to anything, I'm sure that they would agree.

  84. If we were to go into a culture where your class or your caste determines your work and your future,

  85. your friendships, your station in life,

  86. I'm sure they would understand that stories can become like weapons.

  87. They can be a way to keep people down.

  88. In a way, they can extinguish hope.

  89. They can say, Well, we are on the side that is right and you, you are permanent outsiders.

  90. Just ask the religious outsiders of Jesus' day.

  91. What was the story that they heard?

  92. When we look at these first couple of verses,

  93. as we have the scene,

  94. why Jesus tells the parable,

  95. we've got tax collectors,

  96. we've got sinners gathering round to hear Jesus

  97. because they knew there was a different story.

  98. And then you've got the Pharisees and the teachers of the law

  99. complaining about Jesus spending time with the sinners

  100. because the story that they told,

  101. the dominant religious group,

  102. they told the story that the world is divided into good guys and bad guys.

  103. There is them and there is us.

  104. The good guys, well, we are pure.

  105. We keep God's law.

  106. Well, God is pleased with us.

  107. But for the bad guys,

  108. the ones who are not like us,

  109. well, there's no hope for you.

  110. You can't make the grade.

  111. You are outside of God's care.

  112. Jesus offers hope.

  113. But sadly, sadly, this is how some people think about Christianity.

  114. Maybe this is the story that you grew up with, perhaps,

  115. that Christianity is about keep these rules,

  116. attain to this standard,

  117. and if you do, God may be happy with you.

  118. But if not, you are doomed to be on the outside.

  119. Jesus is someone who knows the power of story,

  120. which is why he tells so many stories.

  121. He tells those stories, those parables,

  122. to correct distortions,

  123. distortions,

  124. to bring true thoughts of God,

  125. where the story of God's mercy and grace

  126. had been sidelined.

  127. He brings stories that bring hope,

  128. that extend hope to all.

  129. And Jesus also tells these stories in particular

  130. to defend and to explain his mission.

  131. He spends time with the social,

  132. moral, religious outsiders,

  133. and people looked at him

  134. and wondered why in the world he would do that.

  135. And so Jesus tells these stories

  136. to say that his mission is rooted in the mission of God

  137. and displays the heart of God to us.

  138. So let's look at this story that Jesus tells

  139. in order to fix the distortions that were around in his day,

  140. perhaps distortions that exist in our own hearts

  141. as we come to think about God.

  142. But the story begins in verse 11

  143. with a rejected father.

  144. We're going to concentrate on the father in the story

  145. and it begins with a father who is rejected.

  146. So we discover in verse 11,

  147. there is a man, he has two sons,

  148. and one of those sons, the younger,

  149. comes with a very shocking request.

  150. Shocking in any culture probably,

  151. but here in a culture where to disrespect

  152. or to abandon, to fail to show care to your father

  153. could be considered a crime,

  154. this is a truly horrible thing to say.

  155. Effectively saying,

  156. Father, I can't wait till you're dead.

  157. I want my share of the inheritance right now.

  158. Here is a son with very little care for his father.

  159. He just wants his father's stuff.

  160. And we see that because very quickly after,

  161. in verse 13,

  162. he leaves home.

  163. He wants to run wild and free.

  164. Life with the father is restricting my freedom.

  165. Now the shackles are off.

  166. Now I can have the kind of life I always imagined.

  167. Maybe some of us have lived that story

  168. as the father or as the son perhaps.

  169. How does this father respond to the disrespect

  170. and the rejection that he experiences?

  171. He doesn't do what some in the culture would expect.

  172. He doesn't say,

  173. absolutely not.

  174. Or he doesn't beat him or disown him

  175. or throw him out.

  176. Rather,

  177. we're told,

  178. the end of verse 12,

  179. he divided his property between them.

  180. That word property is the word bios.

  181. It's a reminder that here he is dividing

  182. those resources that he has for living on.

  183. The father bears the cost of this painful rejection.

  184. And here we find in just a few short sentences

  185. in a couple of scenes,

  186. Jesus invites us into the drama of human history

  187. and the story of our rejection of our creator,

  188. of our father.

  189. Because all of us at some point or another in our lives

  190. have said to God,

  191. I will live in your worlds.

  192. I will enjoy your good gifts.

  193. I will take your generosity,

  194. but I don't want you.

  195. All of us have at different times

  196. and in different ways said,

  197. I love the created things,

  198. I'm just not that interested in the creator.

  199. There are different times

  200. and in different ways

  201. we have chosen to love

  202. and honor

  203. and value

  204. other things

  205. and other people

  206. rather than

  207. giving true worship

  208. and ultimate value

  209. to God.

  210. This is our story.

  211. To turn your back on your family,

  212. it is one thing.

  213. And this disrespect

  214. perhaps shocks us

  215. and it should shock us.

  216. But to turn our back on our God.

  217. And what we discover here

  218. is that all of Jesus' audience

  219. is included

  220. in this rejection

  221. of the creator.

  222. Perhaps the Pharisees

  223. at this point in the story

  224. were sitting by

  225. kind of smugly thinking,

  226. well,

  227. those bad guys over there

  228. might have rejected God,

  229. but not us.

  230. But then you get to the end

  231. of the story,

  232. verses 28 and 29,

  233. you see

  234. the older brother,

  235. the good living one,

  236. the one who represents

  237. the religious folks.

  238. He also treats

  239. the father shamefully.

  240. And what we discover

  241. is that all of us

  242. without exception

  243. are indicted

  244. as we read of

  245. a rejected father.

  246. We're drawn into

  247. the story.

  248. The story moves on.

  249. There is a rejected father,

  250. but we see

  251. the story

  252. of an incredibly

  253. generous father.

  254. So the story

  255. for the younger son

  256. does not go well.

  257. We read it there,

  258. verses 13 to 16.

  259. He'd hoped for freedom.

  260. Essentially,

  261. he found slavery.

  262. Life without restrictions

  263. has not brought him

  264. the endless joy

  265. he was hoping for.

  266. It's brought him

  267. into misery.

  268. It's brought him

  269. into shame.

  270. It's brought him

  271. near to death.

  272. So that in verse 17,

  273. there is a transition.

  274. He comes

  275. to his senses.

  276. He begins to think

  277. in his misery

  278. and he resolves

  279. certain things.

  280. He resolves,

  281. first of all,

  282. to return.

  283. I'm going to go back

  284. to my father's house

  285. because at least there

  286. I won't starve to death.

  287. Crucially,

  288. he resolves

  289. to repent.

  290. He resolves

  291. to acknowledge

  292. that before God

  293. and before his father,

  294. he has sinned

  295. in the way

  296. he has treated

  297. his father.

  298. And he also resolves

  299. in his own heart

  300. that he's going to try

  301. and repay

  302. his father back.

  303. He doesn't expect

  304. to get a place

  305. at the family table again

  306. but he thinks,

  307. well, perhaps

  308. if I work for my dad

  309. then I can repay

  310. some of that disgrace.

  311. Perhaps I can repay

  312. some of the money.

  313. So he comes

  314. to his senses,

  315. he makes these resolves

  316. and he begins

  317. to head

  318. for home.

  319. But what happens

  320. as he gets near

  321. to the family farm?

  322. Look with me

  323. at verse 20.

  324. While he was still

  325. a long way off,

  326. his father saw him

  327. and was filled

  328. with compassion

  329. for him.

  330. He ran to his son

  331. through his arms

  332. around him

  333. and kissed him.

  334. The son hadn't

  335. recognized

  336. the size

  337. of the father's heart.

  338. He hadn't

  339. comprehended

  340. the depth

  341. of his father's

  342. love.

  343. He hadn't

  344. appreciated fully

  345. the extent

  346. of his father's

  347. generosity.

  348. Here we see

  349. a longing father

  350. who saw his son

  351. while he was still

  352. a long way off.

  353. The implication,

  354. he's always looking,

  355. he's always hoping,

  356. and when he sees him,

  357. he's filled with what?

  358. Not bitterness,

  359. not resentment,

  360. but compassion.

  361. His instinct

  362. is to love

  363. and to show

  364. mercy.

  365. It's a longing

  366. father,

  367. it's a loving

  368. father who embraced

  369. this boy

  370. in his filth,

  371. in his shame,

  372. in his starvation,

  373. who doesn't

  374. keep him at a distance

  375. saying,

  376. well,

  377. I told you so.

  378. He doesn't involve

  379. him in some kind

  380. of shaming ceremony.

  381. Rather,

  382. he embraces him

  383. with love.

  384. For the people

  385. listening to Jesus,

  386. they would have been

  387. shocked by this

  388. father's generous

  389. grace.

  390. It shocks because

  391. it is so open,

  392. it's so free.

  393. This father gives

  394. to his son exactly

  395. what he does

  396. not deserve.

  397. In verse 21,

  398. he receives

  399. generous forgiveness.

  400. So notice the father,

  401. the son comes to the

  402. father and confesses

  403. sin.

  404. And if the son

  405. had been able

  406. to continue

  407. with his planned

  408. dialogue,

  409. he would have said,

  410. well,

  411. I know I'm not worthy

  412. to be called a son,

  413. but you can make me

  414. into a servant.

  415. But what does the

  416. father do?

  417. He accepts the son's

  418. confession of his sin

  419. and he refuses

  420. to leave him

  421. outside of the family.

  422. He doesn't say,

  423. okay,

  424. well,

  425. let's put you on

  426. probation for a while

  427. and let's see how you

  428. go with earning

  429. my respect

  430. and my trust.

  431. He doesn't ask him

  432. to prove that he's

  433. really sorry.

  434. He receives

  435. the confession

  436. and he welcomes

  437. him back in.

  438. And it's a generous

  439. welcome.

  440. Look what happens

  441. to the boy

  442. in verse 22.

  443. He's welcomed

  444. not as a hired

  445. worker,

  446. but as a valued

  447. family member.

  448. He gets

  449. the indicators

  450. of being part

  451. of the family.

  452. He gets

  453. the ring.

  454. He gets

  455. the quality clothes,

  456. the robe,

  457. and the

  458. sandals.

  459. This is a

  460. personal message

  461. to the son

  462. who was afraid

  463. of what response

  464. he would get.

  465. You are my son

  466. and I love you.

  467. And this is also

  468. a very public message

  469. because the whole

  470. community will be

  471. involved in the feast

  472. and the whole community

  473. will see this father

  474. receiving the son

  475. back with joy.

  476. This grace is to be

  477. celebrated and shared

  478. and there is this

  479. celebration.

  480. And again,

  481. it's not just

  482. the basics.

  483. The boy comes back

  484. starving close to death.

  485. The father doesn't

  486. throw him a crusty

  487. loaf of bread.

  488. What he does

  489. in verse

  490. 23 is

  491. he orders

  492. that the fattened

  493. calf

  494. be killed.

  495. That there be this

  496. great feast

  497. where only the best

  498. will do.

  499. This fattened calf

  500. usually saved maybe

  501. for a family wedding.

  502. Here there is

  503. celebration because

  504. this boy to all

  505. intents and purposes

  506. was dead.

  507. But now

  508. to the father

  509. he is alive.

  510. And so

  511. there is

  512. celebration.

  513. What is Jesus

  514. doing here?

  515. He's recovering

  516. for us

  517. the true

  518. story

  519. that the Pharisees

  520. had lost.

  521. The true story

  522. of God's

  523. character.

  524. Of God's

  525. heart.

  526. God is not

  527. mean

  528. spirited.

  529. If that's your

  530. picture of God

  531. then it's not

  532. a true picture

  533. as Jesus

  534. points out

  535. to us.

  536. God is

  537. generous

  538. to prodigal

  539. sons.

  540. To prodigal

  541. daughters.

  542. To those

  543. who have

  544. made a

  545. mess of

  546. life

  547. perhaps.

  548. He doesn't

  549. leave us

  550. asking

  551. have I

  552. been

  553. sorry

  554. enough?

  555. Have I

  556. repented

  557. enough

  558. that God

  559. will

  560. take me

  561. to be

  562. one of

  563. his?

  564. Rather

  565. what we

  566. discover

  567. this is a

  568. love that

  569. is not

  570. earned.

  571. It's a

  572. love that's

  573. freely given

  574. to all

  575. who come

  576. to him.

  577. And it's

  578. a love

  579. that it's

  580. extravagantly

  581. given.

  582. Grace

  583. is beautiful

  584. in its

  585. expansiveness.

  586. So here

  587. is hope

  588. for prodigals

  589. everywhere.

  590. A hope

  591. that the

  592. Pharisees

  593. tried to

  594. deny.

  595. The hope

  596. that a

  597. works-based

  598. religion

  599. most certainly

  600. denies.

  601. There is

  602. hope

  603. here.

  604. No matter

  605. who we

  606. are,

  607. no matter

  608. what we've

  609. done,

  610. no matter

  611. what our

  612. experiences

  613. have been,

  614. here is

  615. a loving

  616. father.

  617. God the

  618. loving

  619. father with

  620. arms open

  621. wide to

  622. receive any

  623. who like

  624. this son

  625. will say

  626. sorry for

  627. sin,

  628. who will

  629. turn to

  630. him in

  631. faith.

  632. Here is

  633. hope to

  634. for our

  635. prodigals,

  636. the family

  637. members,

  638. the friends

  639. that cause

  640. us heartache

  641. because of

  642. life choices

  643. and where

  644. they're at

  645. right now.

  646. Here is a

  647. reminder to

  648. us,

  649. God is

  650. generous in

  651. his grace,

  652. so we are

  653. to keep

  654. praying for

  655. them,

  656. to keep

  657. loving them,

  658. to keep

  659. looking to

  660. this father

  661. that Jesus

  662. speaks of,

  663. to remember

  664. the hope of

  665. the gospel

  666. and Jesus,

  667. the one who

  668. goes to the

  669. ends of

  670. the earth

  671. in order

  672. to bring

  673. people back

  674. home to

  675. God.

  676. How do we

  677. see this

  678. generosity

  679. working itself

  680. out in the

  681. story of

  682. Jesus?

  683. In verse

  684. 24 we have

  685. these words

  686. from the

  687. father,

  688. this son of

  689. mine was

  690. dead and

  691. is alive

  692. again,

  693. he was

  694. lost and

  695. is found.

  696. How is it

  697. that spiritually

  698. dead people

  699. find life?

  700. How is it

  701. that people

  702. who are

  703. lost and

  704. far from

  705. God are

  706. found by

  707. him and

  708. find a way

  709. home?

  710. What's

  711. through Jesus?

  712. Remember,

  713. this parable

  714. is Jesus

  715. defending his

  716. mission and

  717. what characterizes

  718. Jesus'

  719. mission?

  720. It's a

  721. rescue mission

  722. of grace.

  723. That's why the

  724. Pharisees couldn't

  725. understand him.

  726. He spends

  727. time loving,

  728. serving,

  729. seeking to

  730. save the

  731. weak,

  732. the lost,

  733. the sinful

  734. because that's

  735. what he came

  736. to do.

  737. That's what he

  738. came to do

  739. for us.

  740. He came to

  741. do that

  742. ultimately

  743. at the

  744. cross.

  745. He would

  746. give himself

  747. to death

  748. for our

  749. sin so

  750. that through

  751. him we

  752. might know

  753. true life.

  754. He was the

  755. one on the

  756. cross who

  757. became lost

  758. to his

  759. father so

  760. that through

  761. faith in him

  762. we might be

  763. found by

  764. the father

  765. and welcomed

  766. home with

  767. joy.

  768. The generosity

  769. that is spoken

  770. of in this

  771. parable we

  772. see most

  773. clearly at

  774. the cross.

  775. That's the

  776. generosity that

  777. we are invited

  778. to respond

  779. to.

  780. Jesus knew

  781. the generous

  782. grace of

  783. God and he

  784. came to

  785. demonstrate for

  786. us the

  787. generous grace

  788. of God.

  789. That influenced

  790. his rescue

  791. mission.

  792. For those

  793. of you who

  794. are part of

  795. this church I

  796. hope you had a

  797. chance to read

  798. the latest

  799. newsletter from

  800. Emmanuel

  801. Rianno, one

  802. of our members

  803. who's serving

  804. in Colombia.

  805. If you haven't

  806. it's out on

  807. the board

  808. there.

  809. There's a

  810. great story

  811. there of a

  812. pastor, a

  813. pastor by the

  814. name of

  815. Pastor Amilcar

  816. and he felt

  817. God calling

  818. him into a

  819. new sphere of

  820. service, called

  821. to go and

  822. make disciples

  823. of a particular

  824. kind.

  825. And so what

  826. Pastor Amilcar

  827. now does in

  828. his Colombian

  829. town is he

  830. will drive

  831. around in his

  832. pickup truck and

  833. he'll look for

  834. the guys who

  835. are lying drunk

  836. on the pavement

  837. or drugged on

  838. the pavement,

  839. those who are

  840. kind of in a

  841. real state because

  842. of various

  843. circumstances.

  844. And he'll take

  845. them into his

  846. pickup, he'll

  847. take them back

  848. to church, he'll

  849. give them a meal,

  850. he'll wash them

  851. up and he'll share

  852. the good news

  853. of Jesus with

  854. them.

  855. Why?

  856. Because he is

  857. somebody who has

  858. known the grace

  859. of the Lord Jesus

  860. in his own life

  861. in that same

  862. way.

  863. God's rescue

  864. mission to us

  865. influences the

  866. rescue mission we

  867. are to engage in

  868. for others.

  869. And here's this

  870. wonderful reminder

  871. that no one is

  872. beyond the grace

  873. and forgiveness

  874. of our generous

  875. and joyful God

  876. that by trusting

  877. in this Jesus

  878. to forgive and

  879. save us

  880. that you and I

  881. we can be

  882. welcomed into

  883. the family of

  884. God, whoever

  885. we are, whoever

  886. we've been, because

  887. God is this

  888. generous Father.

  889. So it's the story

  890. of a generous

  891. Father, it's also

  892. the story of a

  893. joyful Father.

  894. Father.

  895. It's a really

  896. interesting parable

  897. this one because

  898. it almost has

  899. two endings.

  900. You know we

  901. could stop at

  902. verse 24 and

  903. we'd have the

  904. happily ever after

  905. ending, the

  906. ending most of

  907. our children's

  908. storybook Bibles

  909. have.

  910. But this

  911. parable has

  912. a twist.

  913. It's got as it

  914. were a second

  915. ending because it

  916. reminds us there's

  917. another brother in

  918. the story and as

  919. the story goes,

  920. as this brother

  921. hears the good

  922. news of his

  923. brother being

  924. safe and alive

  925. and there being

  926. joy.

  927. We see in

  928. verse 28, we

  929. see anger, we

  930. see refusal to

  931. come in, we hear

  932. this brother's

  933. accusations against

  934. the Father, we

  935. feel his anger and

  936. injustice burning.

  937. What's happened is

  938. the generous grace

  939. of his father has

  940. now exposed what

  941. lurks in this

  942. elder brother's

  943. heart.

  944. heart.

  945. So he'll say to

  946. his dad, this

  947. dad, this dad that

  948. we've just met,

  949. verse 29, you're

  950. like a slave driver.

  951. That's how distorted

  952. his thinking was

  953. about his father.

  954. He thinks that a

  955. place in the family

  956. is based on

  957. earning approval.

  958. He's got it so

  959. badly wrong.

  960. And this father, this

  961. generous father, this

  962. joyful father, in

  963. verse 28, goes out

  964. to plead with this

  965. son, saying to him

  966. in verse 31, my

  967. son, you're always

  968. with me and

  969. everything I have is

  970. yours.

  971. In other words,

  972. remember the right

  973. to sonship is

  974. yours.

  975. Just ask.

  976. Don't stay outside in

  977. your misery and your

  978. anger.

  979. Just ask.

  980. And you too can be

  981. experiencing this

  982. joy.

  983. And then he says to

  984. this son who's

  985. harboring so much

  986. anger, who's so

  987. disgruntled, verse

  988. 32, we had to

  989. celebrate and be

  990. glad because this

  991. brother of yours was

  992. dead and is alive

  993. again.

  994. He was lost and is

  995. found.

  996. It is essential to

  997. the character of his

  998. father.

  999. It's essential to the

  1000. heart of his father

  1001. that he had to

  1002. rejoice at this

  1003. great restoration

  1004. that's taking place.

  1005. That he gets to

  1006. welcome this son

  1007. home.

  1008. But we have an

  1009. older brother who's

  1010. miserable.

  1011. He's miserable

  1012. because he's

  1013. trying to earn by

  1014. merit what can

  1015. only be enjoyed by

  1016. grace.

  1017. And that's a

  1018. miserable place to

  1019. be.

  1020. Where you're always

  1021. comparing just like

  1022. this brother.

  1023. Well hang on a

  1024. minute.

  1025. I live better than

  1026. this guy.

  1027. Never confident of

  1028. the father's

  1029. unconditional love

  1030. because we make it

  1031. about ourselves

  1032. rather than the

  1033. generous grace of

  1034. father God.

1035. That was the way the

  1036. Pharisees minds

  1037. worked.

  1038. And that's the way

  1039. a religious system

  1040. based on works and

  1041. performance operates.

  1042. that I can feel

  1043. good if I think

  1044. that I have made

  1045. the grade.

  1046. But will I ever

  1047. know if I've made

  1048. the grade?

  1049. And then there's

  1050. moments of despair

  1051. when things go

  1052. badly.

  1053. Perhaps again this is

  1054. your idea of how

  1055. Christianity operates.

  1056. And Jesus tells this

  1057. story to bring us

  1058. true thoughts about

  1059. God.

  1060. And true thoughts

  1061. about the way into

  1062. God's kingdom.

  1063. It's not God's way

  1064. that we have to

  1065. slave and earn to

  1066. be accepted.

  1067. Jesus teaches God's

  1068. joy in forgiving and

  1069. God's generous grace.

1070. Jesus as it were wants

1071. to give us new lenses

  1072. through which to view

  1073. reality.

1074. You know if I take my

  1075. glasses off to

  1076. snipe that's quite

  1077. disconcerting.

1078. If I do that two

  1079. things happen.

  1080. One is immediate.

  1081. Everybody becomes

  1082. fuzzy.

  1083. Really fuzzy.

1084. And two if we were to

1085. continue this out on the

  1086. street I would most

  1087. likely walk past most

  1088. of you without knowing.

  1089. Because I cannot see

  1090. clearly the reality in

  1091. front of me.

1092. Jesus is trying to do

  1093. that with this parable.

  1094. He's trying to bring

  1095. reality into sharp

  1096. clarity for us.

1097. To see on the one

  1098. hand that when it

1099. comes to God truly we

  1100. are guilty.

1101. That none of us can

  1102. stand before God and

1103. say my record is good

  1104. enough for you to

  1105. accept me.

1106. And also to see with

  1107. clarity God's generous

  1108. grace.

1109. And he is telling us

1110. this story so that we

  1111. won't walk by.

1112. So we won't think well

  1113. it's all right.

1114. That we would see this

  1115. as a wonderful, as a

  1116. glorious thing.

  1117. That it would change

  1118. our hearts and our

  1119. lives.

1120. So Jesus in this story

1121. is pointing us to the

  1122. problem of our hearts

1123. whether we are sort of

  1124. the religious good guys

  1125. by nature or whether

  1126. we're the not religious

1127. the bad guys of the

  1128. story.

  1129. That both whoever we

  1130. are in different ways

  1131. reject and treat the

  1132. father, our father, the

  1133. creator, shockingly.

  1134. So that everybody stands

1135. in need of grace and

  1136. forgiveness.

1137. And the good news is that

  1138. everybody is freely

  1139. offered that grace and

  1140. forgiveness in Jesus.

1141. So here is Jesus giving

  1142. us this beautiful picture

1143. of the love of God.

1144. Here is a father who pays

  1145. the price to restore

  1146. relationships that have

  1147. been broken.

1148. Here is a God who goes

  1149. seeking and searching for

1150. those who are lost and on

  1151. the outside.

1152. Here is one who forgives

  1153. generously and joyfully

  1154. welcomes prodigals in.

  1155. Stories are powerful.

1156. The stories of Jesus are

  1157. powerful because they point

  1158. us to great truth.

1159. And in this truth there is

  1160. freedom.

1161. Freedom to live with hope

1162. and to live with joy.

  1163. Knowing that we've been

  1164. forgiven and accepted if

  1165. we're trusting in Jesus.

1166. And also to live with

  1167. purpose.

1168. Because this is a story not

  1169. just for ourselves.

1170. This is a story for

  1171. everyone.

1172. So our mission is to take

  1173. this great story.

  1174. This great gospel story.

1175. And to share it with

  1176. others.

  1177. With our friends.

  1178. With our community.

  1179. Thank you.

  1180. Thank you.

  1181. Thank you.
