  1. Now, can you turn with me in your Bibles again, this time to the book of Isaiah, Isaiah chapter 41.

    Isaiah 41 chapter mention

  2. It's on page 726 if you're using a church Bible.

  3. We're going to read Isaiah 41 from verse 21 into chapter 42.

  4. We're going to focus our attention on the first nine verses of chapter 42,

  5. but we'll read from verse 41 for a bit of context as we think about Jesus, the servant of the Lord.

  6. So Isaiah 41 at verse 21.

  7. Present your case, says the Lord.

  8. Set forth your arguments, says Jacob's king.

  9. Bring in your idols to tell us what's going to happen.

  10. Tell us what the former things were so that we may consider them and know their final outcome.

  11. Or declare to us the things to come.

  12. Tell us what the future holds so that we may know you are God's.

  13. Do something, whether good or bad, so that we will be dismayed and filled with fear.

  14. But you are less than nothing, and your works are utterly worthless.

  15. He who chooses you is detestable.

  16. I have stirred up one from the north, and he comes, one from the rising sun who calls on my name.

  17. He treads on rulers as if they were mortar, as if he were a potter treading the clay.

  18. Who told of this from the beginning so that we could know, or beforehand so that we could say he was right?

  19. No one told of this.

  20. No one foretold it.

  21. No one heard any words from you.

  22. I was the first to tell Zion.

  23. Look, here they are.

  24. I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good tidings.

  25. I look, but there is no one.

  26. No one among them to give counsel.

  27. No one to give answer when I ask them.

  28. See, they are all false.

  29. Their deeds amount to nothing.

  30. Their images are but wind and confusion.

  31. Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight.

  32. I will put my spirit on him, and he will bring justice to the nations.

  33. He will not shout or cry out or raise his voice in the streets.

  34. A bruised reed he will not break.

  35. In a smouldering wick he will not snuff out.

  36. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.

  37. He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.

  38. In his law the islands will put their hope.

  39. This is what God the Lord says.

  40. He who created the heavens and stretched them out,

  41. who spreads out the earth and all that comes out of it,

  42. who gives breath to its people and life to those who walk on it.

  43. I, the Lord, have called you in righteousness.

  44. I will take hold of your hand.

  45. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people

  46. and a light for the Gentiles,

  47. to open eyes that are blind,

  48. to free captives from prison,

  49. and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness.

  50. I am the Lord.

  51. That is my name.

  52. I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols.

  53. See, the former things have taken place and new things I declare.

  54. Before they spring into being,

  55. I announce them to you.

  56. Amen.

  57. So sometimes people speak about the current generation

  58. as the choice generation.

  59. You may have heard of the acronym FOMO,

  60. the fear of missing out.

  61. I came across another one this week,

  62. FOMO, the fear of better options.

  63. And I wonder if some of us can identify with that.

  64. When there's an endless choice in life for almost anything,

  65. from toothbrushes to job opportunities,

  66. from holidays to what to watch on the television,

  67. the result can be choice paralysis.

  68. If I make this choice,

  69. if I go through this door,

  70. that's going to close off these options.

  71. And what if these are the better options?

  72. What if there's something better out there for me?

  73. And people can be paralyzed by too much choice.

  74. And one of the reasons why it's so unhelpful for us

  75. is because we can be so tied up

  76. in thinking about these choices

  77. that ultimately don't matter that much

  78. that we can forget the one choice that really does.

  79. And that brings us to God's message to Israel,

  80. to the nations,

  81. and to ourselves today in the book of Isaiah.

  82. And it's all about worship.

  83. It's all about what we choose to make most valuable,

  84. most significant,

  85. where we look to for meaning.

  86. When it comes to worship,

  87. God says,

  88. choose me and choose my servant.

  89. Don't choose an idol.

  90. This section's actually part of a bigger section

  91. that presents the choice before us.

  92. Isaiah 41 to 46.

  93. It repeatedly goes back to this idea

  94. that the idols that people follow are hollow.

  95. They fail to deliver on their promises.

  96. They lack power to save.

  97. They cannot know or control the future.

  98. The idols in Isaiah's day

  99. were statues made of wood or gold or silver.

  100. But an idol can be anything that we worship

  101. because we hope that it will protect us,

  102. that in some way it will save us,

  103. that it will grant us success,

  104. it will give value to life.

  105. So for us today,

  106. we might not have statues,

  107. but we might be pinning all our hopes

  108. on a career perhaps,

  109. or a relationship,

  110. or a series of relationships.

  111. We could place all our hopes

  112. in political institutions

  113. or financial security.

  114. Here's our choice today.

  115. God gives us a courtroom picture.

  116. Present your case.

  117. That's how our reading went.

  118. On the one hand,

  119. there are the idols.

  120. You can choose to follow those idols,

  121. or God says,

  122. here is my servant.

  123. Here is the servant of the Lord,

  124. the one who the New Testament reveals to us

  125. as Jesus.

  126. Here is this figure

  127. who will take the stage of history

  128. to serve as a worldwide redeemer,

  129. who is the answer to the darkness,

  130. who provides light and truth.

  131. So we're going to think about Jesus,

  132. the servant of the Lord,

  133. this morning,

  134. thinking about why,

  135. if we're Christians,

  136. we are to keep on following

  137. the servant of the Lord.

  138. And if we're not Christians,

  139. here's why we should consider,

  140. why we should follow Jesus.

  141. The first reason is connected

  142. to his identity.

  143. Even as we read verse 1,

  144. it becomes very clear

  145. that this servant is God's man

  146. who will be on God's mission.

  147. So Isaiah 42 verse 1,

    Isaiah 42:1

  148. here is my servant whom I uphold,

  149. my chosen one in whom I delight.

  150. I will put my spirit on him

  151. and he will bring justice to the nations.

  152. God's servant who is upheld,

  153. given power for his task.

  154. But he's not just a servant,

  155. he's also the chosen one.

  156. He is one who is loved,

  157. that God delights in him.

  158. And we see that he acts for God.

  159. God's spirit is on him

  160. and he brings justice.

  161. He brings the rule of God

  162. to the nations.

  163. An idea repeated in verse 1

  164. and then again in verse 4.

  165. And then in verses 5 and 6,

  166. the same kind of idea

  167. comes up again.

  168. Here is God the Lord,

  169. here is the creator of the world,

  170. here is the sustainer of the world speaking.

  171. And in verse 6,

  172. we see God's purpose for his servant.

  173. We see all the purpose language.

  174. I have called you in righteousness.

  175. I will take hold of your hand.

  176. I will keep you

  177. and will make you to be a covenant

  178. for the people.

  179. What's the identity of this servant?

  180. He is one who is loved of God

  181. and who is sent by God

  182. on a mission to establish

  183. the kingdom of God,

  184. to bring people into relationship

  185. with God,

  186. to be the hope of the nations.

  187. And it's as if God is saying,

  188. you need to decide

  189. which you're going to choose.

  190. Are you going to choose

  191. the genuine article,

  192. this servant,

  193. or will you choose

  194. what is fake?

  195. Just as,

  196. I guess nowadays,

  197. if we shop on the internet,

  198. we need to be careful

  199. on Amazon

  200. that we get the real deal

  201. and not a counterfeit,

  202. or we go to a market,

  203. need to check what you're getting.

  204. God is saying to us,

  205. the idols cannot supply

  206. what we need.

  207. What we look to from them,

  208. they will not be able

  209. in the end to deliver,

  210. though they might claim to.

  211. Think for a minute

  212. about the world of advertising.

  213. Advertising exists

  214. to persuade you

  215. that life will be complete

  216. when you have that thing

  217. that they're trying to sell us.

  218. The reality is that

  219. staff and people,

  220. they provide temporary happiness,

  221. but God invites us

  222. to think bigger

  223. and to look bigger.

  224. That the Christian message

  225. provides solid joy

  226. and lasting treasure

  227. because it invites us

  228. to know God himself.

  229. Because we were created

  230. in the image of God

  231. to know and enjoy him.

  232. We're created with

  233. never-dying souls.

  234. And so the idols

  235. are not big enough

  236. to satisfy.

  237. But God is going to send

  238. his servant,

  239. he says,

  240. in Isaiah's day.

  241. And even the identity

  242. of the servant

  243. sparks hope.

  244. And especially as we read

  245. in light of Jesus coming,

  246. do you remember

  247. what's said of Jesus'

  248. public arrival?

  249. Jesus, God's king,

  250. who's also God's servant,

  251. very different arrival.

  252. Then the arrival

  253. of the royal wedding yesterday

  254. with the fancy carriage

  255. and all the pomp and ceremony.

  256. Jesus came,

  257. was placed in a manger.

  258. And then when he began

  259. his public ministry,

  260. he came to John the Baptist

  261. to be baptized

  262. in the Jordan River.

  263. And what happened?

  264. The Spirit of God

  265. came on him,

  266. came on the servant.

  267. The voice from heaven

  268. spoke,

  269. this is my son

  270. whom I love.

  271. Listen to him.

  272. And what was the message

  273. of Jesus

  274. as he began moving around

  275. preaching and teaching?

  276. It was repent and believe

  277. for the kingdom of God

  278. is near.

  279. Here is the servant

  280. with the spirit on him

  281. who's loved by God,

  282. who's bringing in

  283. the kingdom

  284. through his life.

  285. So Jesus

  286. is no ordinary man.

  287. He is God's man.

  288. Indeed,

  289. he is the God man

  290. on God's

  291. rescue mission.

  292. So we follow Jesus,

  293. we are called

  294. to follow Jesus

  295. because of who he is.

  296. Because he is

  297. God the Son

  298. on God's mission.

  299. Another reason

  300. is presented to us

  301. for following Jesus

  302. in verses 2 and 3

  303. and it's tied into

  304. the character

  305. of the servant.

  306. So we've just been told

  307. that this servant

  308. will come

  309. and he will establish

  310. justice

  311. in the nations

  312. and that's

  313. a powerful

  314. role and responsibility

  315. but then we're told

  316. in verses 2 and 3

  317. how he goes about

  318. his work

  319. and it's both

  320. surprising

  321. and also

  322. attractive.

  323. We've got this

  324. combination

  325. of

  326. power

  327. with

  328. gentleness.

  329. So he's come

  330. to establish

  331. to bring justice

  332. to the nations

  333. but look at verse 2.

  334. He will not shout

  335. or cry out

  336. or raise his voice

  337. in the streets.

  338. He's not brash.

  339. He's not harsh.

  340. He doesn't seek

  341. to dominate

  342. or rule

  343. by force.

  344. Verse 3.

  345. A bruised reed

  346. he will not break.

  347. He's gentle

  348. with what seems

  349. weak

  350. what might be

  351. considered

  352. in other hands

  353. worthless.

  354. A smouldering

  355. wick

  356. he will not

  357. snuff out

  358. protecting

  359. even that

  360. which seems

  361. so fragile

  362. as to be

  363. close

  364. to

  365. extinction.

  366. Jesus

  367. the servant

  368. of the Lord

  369. is powerful

  370. but he's also

  371. gentle.

  372. this is the

  373. kind of person

  374. that we want

  375. in our lives

  376. that when we

  377. find ourselves

  378. with trouble

  379. or with

  380. questions

  381. or in crisis

  382. someone who we

  383. can go to

  384. who is able

  385. to understand

  386. and help

  387. but more than

  388. that

  389. someone who

  390. wants to

  391. help

  392. somebody who

  393. wants to

  394. draw near

  395. to show us

  396. love

  397. and to show

  398. us mercy

  399. mercy.

  400. And I think

  401. we all know

  402. this is not

  403. a common

  404. combination

  405. to find the

  406. people in the

  407. places of power

  408. who are

  409. still gentle

  410. with those

  411. under them.

  412. And so often

  413. it's those who

  414. are gentle

  415. who lack

  416. the power

  417. to help

  418. when they

  419. would love

  420. to help.

  421. But here

  422. is the servant

  423. who is both

  424. powerful

  425. and gentle.

  426. To give us

  427. a picture

  428. think of a

  429. lion

  430. a female

  431. lion

  432. out on

  433. the hunt.

  434. As that

  435. lion

  436. pounces

  437. on her

  438. prey

  439. you have

  440. those

  441. huge

  442. powerful

  443. jaws

  444. capable

  445. of

  446. tearing

  447. an

  448. animal

  449. apart.

  450. There is

  451. power

  452. in the

  453. animal

  454. and in

  455. those

  456. jaws

  457. but those

  458. same

  459. jaws

  460. will also

  461. carry

  462. her cubs

  463. very tenderly

  464. to safety.

  465. Only

  466. Jesus

  467. demonstrates

  468. ultimate

  469. strength

  470. and applies

  471. that same

  472. strength

  473. in tender

  474. gentle

  475. ways.

  476. When we

  477. see Jesus

  478. in the

  479. gospels

  480. we find

  481. one who

  482. has the

  483. power to

  484. drive away

  485. demons.

  486. We find

  487. him

  488. overturning

  489. the tables

  490. of money

  491. changers

  492. who are

  493. oppressing

  494. those who

  495. would want

  496. to worship

  497. God.

  498. We see

  499. one who

  500. is powerful

  501. enough to

  502. call the

  503. dead

  504. to life.

  505. to offer

  506. forgiveness

  507. to those

  508. who have

  509. sinned.

  510. But then

  511. as we

  512. read in

  513. Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  514. chapter

  515. 12

  516. we saw

  517. that this

  518. description

  519. in verses

  520. 2 and 3

  521. was also

  522. applied to

  523. Jesus and

  524. we see

  525. that in

  526. his life

  527. too.

  528. We see

  529. Jesus

  530. very gentle

  531. with those

  532. in pain.

  533. We see

  534. Jesus

  535. loving to

  536. those who

  537. have been

  538. rejected.

  539. We see

  540. Jesus tender

  541. to those

  542. who found

  543. themselves

  544. in their

  545. lowest places

  546. in very

  547. dark

  548. spaces

  549. because

  550. Jesus

  551. is

  552. the

  553. perfect

  554. saviour.

  555. He is

  556. the saviour

  557. we all

  558. need.

  559. One who

  560. is stronger

  561. than all

  562. the forces

  563. of darkness

  564. that line up

  565. against us

  566. and that

  567. lined up

  568. against him.

  569. Paul says

  570. in Colossians

  571. that Jesus

  572. triumphed over

  573. all the

  574. forces of

  575. darkness.

  576. Satan,

  577. sin,

  578. death,

  579. conquering

  580. them

  581. at the

  582. cross.

  583. Jesus

  584. is the

  585. one who

  586. has dealt

  587. with the

  588. sin that

  589. separates us

  590. from God.

  591. He has

  592. taken the

  593. judgment

  594. that we

  595. deserve

  596. that separates

  597. us and

  598. would lead

  599. us into

  600. eternal

  601. separation

  602. from God.

  603. Jesus

  604. is the

  605. one who

  606. deals

  607. gently

  608. with his

  609. people.

  610. He knows

  611. us,

  612. he knows

  613. our weakness

  614. and still

  615. he loves

  616. us and

  617. still he

  618. cares for

  619. us.

  620. So you

  621. and I

  622. we can

  623. trust him

  624. and we

  625. should

  626. trust him.

  627. Another

  628. reason to

  629. follow Jesus

  630. is because

  631. of the

  632. mission

  633. that he

  634. has been

  635. sent on.

  636. Already

  637. in this

  638. section

  639. the contrast

  640. between the

  641. idols and

  642. the servant

  643. is becoming

  644. apparent

  645. but God

  646. goes still

  647. further to

  648. show Israel,

  649. to show the

  650. nations,

  651. to show us

  652. why we should

  653. choose Jesus

  654. and not

  655. anyone else

  656. to live

  657. for.

  658. In verses

  659. 6 and

  660. 7,

  661. the Lord

  662. capital letters,

  663. the personal

  664. God,

  665. the promise

  666. making God

  667. goes further

  668. to help us

  669. choose wisely.

  670. If we go

  671. towards the

  672. bottom half

  673. of verse

  674. 6,

  675. we see

  676. this,

  677. I will

  678. keep you

  679. and will

  680. make you

  681. to be a

  682. covenant

  683. for the

  684. people

  685. and a

  686. light for

  687. the Gentiles,

  688. to open

  689. eyes that

  690. are blind,

  691. to free

  692. captives from

  693. prison and

  694. to release

  695. from the

  696. dungeon

  697. those who

  698. sit in

  699. darkness.

  700. What are

  701. the mission

  702. objectives of

  703. the servant

  704. of the Lord,

  705. the one who

  706. will be

  707. sent?

  708. He's sent

  709. to bring

  710. relationship,

  711. a relationship

  712. restored between

  713. God and

  714. people.

  715. He comes

  716. for restoration

  717. from darkness

  718. and misery

  719. to light

  720. and life.

  721. Notice the

  722. language in

  723. verse 6,

  724. I will

  725. make you

  726. to be

  727. a covenant.

  728. This

  729. servant,

  730. this Jesus

  731. is God's

  732. means through

  733. whom people

  734. will come

  735. into a

  736. covenant

  737. relationship

  738. with the

  739. Lord God

  740. himself.

  741. There is

  742. no other

  743. way to

  744. know God

  745. except through

  746. Jesus and

  747. trusting what

  748. he has done

  749. for us.

  750. In Isaiah's

  751. day,

  752. there were

  753. many people,

  754. although they

  755. were God's

  756. covenant

  757. people,

  758. they were

  759. living without

  760. reference to

  761. God.

  762. in trouble,

  763. they didn't

  764. pray to

  765. God.

  766. In trouble,

  767. they were

  768. looking to

  769. foreign

  770. alliances to

  771. deliver them.

  772. They were

  773. faithless,

  774. but here is

  775. hope for them

  776. despite that

  777. lack of faith

  778. because God

  779. is faithful.

  780. God keeps

  781. his covenant

  782. promises and

  783. this servant

  784. who will come

  785. stands as

  786. proof of

  787. that.

  788. Can I trust

  789. that God

  790. will love me,

  791. that God

  792. will save me?

  793. Yes,

  794. because he

  795. sent Jesus

  796. his servant

  797. as he

  798. promised.

  799. And he

  800. does it

  801. as a

  802. free

  803. decision.

  804. God

  805. freely

  806. decides out

  807. of love

  808. to take

  809. and keep

  810. a people

  811. for himself.

  812. Not based

  813. on a

  814. person's

  815. goodness

  816. or a

  817. religious

  818. performance,

  819. but based

  820. wholly on

  821. God's

  822. grace.

  823. The servant

  824. is the

  825. basis for

  826. a covenant

  827. being established.

  828. And we see

  829. how this

  830. works out.

  831. In the

  832. life of

  833. Jesus.

  834. Next week

  835. here in

  836. church as

  837. the people

  838. of God

  839. we will

  840. share

  841. the Lord's

  842. Supper.

  843. Taking us

  844. back to

  845. the last

  846. supper that

  847. Jesus shared

  848. with his

  849. disciples before

  850. the cross

  851. where he

  852. took the

  853. bread and

  854. the wine

  855. as symbols

  856. of his

  857. body

  858. broken

  859. and his

  860. blood

  861. shed

  862. for sin

  863. and for

  864. sinners.

  865. A reminder

  866. that at

  867. the cross

  868. Jesus dies

  869. for our

  870. sin.

  871. Jesus dies

  872. for us

  873. choosing to

  874. live without

  875. reference

  876. to him.

  877. He dies

  878. for that

  879. sin of

  880. choosing

  881. false

  882. saviors

  883. for

  884. ourselves.

  885. He dies

  886. for our

  887. false

  888. worship

  889. where we

  890. choose to

  891. live for

  892. other things

  893. rather than

  894. the glory

  895. of God.

  896. God.

  897. And the

  898. result of

  899. that death

  900. in our

  901. place and

  902. for our

  903. sins is

  904. that by

  905. faith we

  906. can be

  907. reconciled

  908. to the

  909. living God.

  910. That barrier

  911. of sin

  912. is broken.

  913. That we

  914. can be

  915. welcomed

  916. into the

  917. family of

  918. God.

  919. We can

  920. be adopted

  921. as sons

  922. and daughters

  923. of the

  924. king with

  925. all the

  926. promises

  927. that comes

  928. with that.

  929. Here we

  930. are reminded

  931. that God

  932. in the

  933. Bible

  934. offers us

  935. the kind

  936. of relationship

  937. that we

  938. all long

  939. for and

  940. perhaps spend

  941. all of our

  942. lives looking

  943. for.

  944. Here is

  945. one who

  946. will love

  947. us.

  948. Here is

  949. one who

  950. knows our

  951. weaknesses,

  952. knows everything

  953. about us,

  954. yet still

  955. moves towards

  956. us rather

  957. than running

  958. from us.

  959. Here is

  960. one who

  961. promises

  962. always to

  963. be there

  964. for us

  965. in life

  966. and in

  967. death.

  968. Here is

  969. the kind

  970. of love

  971. that moves

  972. us and

  973. causes us

  974. to be

  975. better people

  976. as he

  977. puts his

  978. spirit in

  979. us.

  980. So he

  981. offers us a

  982. covenant

  983. relationship.

  984. And who

  985. is this

  986. covenant

  987. for?

  988. Well in

  989. verse 6

  990. we're told

  991. it's a

  992. covenant

  993. for the

  994. people.

  995. In

  996. verse 1

  997. there's a

  998. reminder that

  999. the servant

  1000. comes for

  1001. the nations.

  1002. In

  1003. verse 4

  1004. this servant

  1005. is the

  1006. one that

  1007. the islands

  1008. will put

  1009. their hope

  1010. in.

  1011. The islands

  1012. is a

  1013. picture of

  1014. the remote

  1015. places.

  1016. In other

  1017. words this

  1018. covenant,

  1019. this promise

  1020. of relationship

  1021. is for

  1022. anyone,

  1023. is for

  1024. everyone

  1025. who will

  1026. turn from

  1027. sin and

  1028. trust in

  1029. Jesus as

  1030. Savior.

  1031. So there's

  1032. this wonderful

  1033. picture of the

  1034. servant coming to

  1035. bring relationship

  1036. but also

  1037. coming to

  1038. bring restoration.

  1039. To pick up on

  1040. the language of

  1041. verses 6 and

  1042. 7 that in

  1043. place of

  1044. darkness he

  1045. will bring

  1046. light.

  1047. In place of

  1048. blindness he

  1049. will bring

  1050. sight.

  1051. In place of

  1052. captivity and

  1053. misery the

  1054. servant of the

  1055. Lord will

  1056. bring freedom.

  1057. This powerful

  1058. Savior, this

  1059. gentle Savior

  1060. offers to

  1061. us hope and

  1062. healing beyond

  1063. our failures.

  1064. You know

  1065. yourself, I

  1066. know myself, you

  1067. know the stuff

  1068. that lurks in

  1069. our past that

  1070. causes us grief

  1071. and sorrow and

  1072. keeps us awake

  1073. at night.

  1074. There is hope

  1075. beyond that.

  1076. There is hope

  1077. beyond our bad

  1078. choices.

  1079. Those bad

  1080. choices do not

  1081. need to define

  1082. us.

  1083. we can be

  1084. defined by our

  1085. being in

  1086. Christ and

  1087. having hope

  1088. in him.

  1089. There is hope

  1090. beyond guilt and

  1091. shame through

  1092. this servant.

  1093. This was the

  1094. manifesto of

  1095. Jesus to come

  1096. and to restore

  1097. lives that were

  1098. broken and

  1099. hurting.

  1100. When Jesus as a

  1101. visiting preacher

  1102. came back to his

  1103. hometown in

  1104. Nazareth, he was

1105. invited to pick up a

  1106. scroll and to read

  1107. and to teach.

1108. In Luke 4, we are

  1109. told that he read

  1110. from Isaiah.

  1111. He read from Isaiah

  1112. 61.

  1113. Let me read the

  1114. verses there.

  1115. The spirit of the

  1116. sovereign Lord is

  1117. on me because the

  1118. Lord has anointed me

  1119. to preach good

  1120. news to the poor.

1121. He has sent me to

  1122. bind up the

  1123. brokenhearted, to

  1124. proclaim freedom

  1125. for the captives,

  1126. and release from

  1127. darkness for the

  1128. prisoners, to

  1129. proclaim the year

  1130. of the Lord's

  1131. favor.

  1132. Jesus said,

  1133. this is speaking

  1134. about me.

  1135. This is what I've

  1136. come to do.

  1137. I've come to

  1138. restore.

  1139. And his public

  1140. ministry, if you

  1141. read the Gospels,

  1142. read the Gospels,

  1143. and it's evidence

  1144. of that kind of

  1145. ministry.

  1146. And his death on

  1147. the cross serves as

  1148. the ultimate

  1149. demonstration of that

  1150. reality where Jesus

  1151. himself is broken

  1152. and he is crushed

1153. so that we can be

  1154. made new.

  1155. His death is the

  1156. price of our

  1157. redemption and new

  1158. life.

  1159. last reason why we

  1160. should follow Jesus

  1161. or keep following

  1162. Jesus is connected

  1163. to his glory.

  1164. It takes us to

  1165. verses 8 and 9.

  1166. Why does God send

  1167. the servant of the

  1168. Lord?

1169. Why does he send the

  1170. one that he loves?

  1171. Why does he send

  1172. this one who will

  1173. establish God's reign

  1174. of justice?

  1175. Why does he send

  1176. this one who gently

  1177. deals with people,

  1178. who establishes this

  1179. covenant of life and

  1180. peace and brings

  1181. restoration and healing?

  1182. And we discover

  1183. ultimately it's for

  1184. his glory.

  1185. I am the Lord.

  1186. That is my name.

1187. I will not give my

1188. glory to another or my

  1189. praise to idols.

  1190. The servant's coming is

  1191. connected to God having

1192. the glory that is due

  1193. his name.

1194. God's goal is that he

  1195. receive the praise that

  1196. he deserves as our

  1197. creator and as our

  1198. redeemer.

1199. And that's why in this

  1200. section 41 to 46 so

  1201. often he's contrasting

  1202. his glory versus the

  1203. worthlessness of idols.

1204. So in verse 9, another

  1205. example, God knows and

  1206. controls the future

  1207. unlike the idols.

  1208. Jesus will come as

  1209. promised just as other

  1210. deliverers had come as

  1211. promised.

1212. Here is God calling the

  1213. people to recognize that

1214. we can pin our hopes on

  1215. many things but

  1216. ultimately Jesus is our

1217. only hope in life and

  1218. in death.

1219. And what we discover in the

  1220. New Testament is that

1221. Jesus comes to reveal, to

1222. display the glory of God

  1223. to us.

1224. We start looking midweek in

1225. the book of Colossians and

1226. we read that he is, Jesus is,

1227. the image of the invisible

  1228. God.

1229. That the fullness of God is

  1230. found in him.

1231. So when it comes to the

  1232. servant, there is no

  1233. rivalry here because this

1234. servant is the son of God.

1235. So he deserves all praise

  1236. and glory.

  1237. When Jesus was contemplating

  1238. the cross, he prayed,

  1239. Father, glorify your name.

  1240. Bring glory to yourself

  1241. through the cross.

1242. And the answer comes from

  1243. heaven.

  1244. I have glorified it and I

  1245. will glorify it again.

1246. The cross is the revelation

1247. of the glory of God that he

  1248. can satisfy justice against

1249. sin and be loving and extend

1250. grace to sinners like us.

1251. The center of Christianity is

1252. the loving kindness of God and

1253. eternally planning to send his

1254. son Jesus to rescue us from sin.

1255. Not so that we would get praise,

1256. but so that he would get praise

  1257. and glory.

1258. We are called to follow Jesus

1259. because when we look at him,

1260. when we look into his face,

1261. we see, as Paul says, the glory of

1262. God in the face of Jesus.

1263. And we also see the glory of God

1264. in his nail-pierced hands as he

1265. goes to the cross in love to

1266. rescue us, to redeem us, to

  1267. restore us to relationship.

1268. So here is God saying to us,

1269. here is why you are to keep

  1270. following Jesus.

  1271. If you're not a Christian, to

  1272. begin following Jesus.

  1273. Jesus.

  1274. Thank you.
