  1. Now, can you turn with me in your Bible to John chapter 21 on page 1090.

    John 21 chapter mention

  2. Now, we're thinking this morning about the hope beyond the fear of shame and failure

  3. that Jesus and the gospel brings. So we're in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  4. and we're going to read together the first 17 verses.

  5. Afterwards, Jesus appeared again to his disciples by the Sea of Tiberias.

  6. It happened this way. Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathaniel from Cana in Galilee,

  7. the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

  8. I'm going out to fish, Simon Peter told them, and they said, we'll go with you.

  9. So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

  10. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

  11. He called out to them, friends, haven't you any fish?

  12. No, they answered. He said, throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  13. When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

  14. Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, it is the Lord.

  15. As soon as Simon Peter heard him say it is the Lord, he wrapped his outer garment around him,

  16. for he had taken it off, and jumped into the water.

  17. The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish,

  18. for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards.

  19. When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it and some bread.

  20. Jesus said to them, bring some of the fish you have just caught.

  21. Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore.

  22. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many, the net was not torn.

  23. Jesus said to them, come and have breakfast.

  24. None of the disciples dared ask him, who are you?

  25. They knew it was the Lord.

  26. Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them and did the same with the fish.

  27. This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

  28. When he'd finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  29. Simon, son of John, do you truly love me more than these?

  30. Yes, Lord, he said, you know that I love you.

  31. Jesus said, feed my lambs.

  32. Again, Jesus said, Simon, son of John, do you truly love me?

  33. He answered, yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  34. Jesus said, take care of my sheep.

  35. The third time he said to him, Simon, son of John, do you love me?

  36. Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, do you love me?

  37. He said, Lord, you know all things.

  38. You know that I love you.

  39. Jesus said, feed my sheep.

  40. Amen.

  41. Now, I wonder if you were to reflect on your life to date,

  42. what you would consider your defining moments to be.

  43. In a sense, your life and mine are these collections of events and memories,

  44. things that have happened that are then available for us to replay in our minds.

  45. So we have those moments that we love to think about, times of happiness and success and joy,

  46. times where everything just came together perfectly.

  47. But yet we know that there are other moments, other events, other memories which are profoundly painful.

  48. Those two are etched in our minds.

  49. Times of failure, of shame, of disgrace.

  50. It could be as simple as being picked last in the playground.

  51. It could be reflecting on words spoken in anger to somebody that we love.

  52. People that we failed to defend.

  53. Lies that we told to protect ourselves.

  54. Perhaps a parent who saw nothing good in us.

  55. Abuse that we experienced.

  56. A failure to meet our own expectations or the expectations of others.

  57. Shame has been described as a master emotion.

  58. Because these dark strands of our past, they can play and replay in our minds,

  59. seeking to persuade us that we are worthless, that we are unclean, that we are hopeless.

  60. That shame would seek to dominate and define us.

  61. Now where does shame come from?

  62. Well, biblically we find it way back in the story of Adam and Eve in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  63. That the moment at which Adam and Eve decide to turn away from God,

  64. they decide that they're going to disobey God's word,

  65. they're going to eat the fruit they're not supposed to,

  66. they discover that rather than becoming godlike, and that's a wonderful thing,

  67. now they find that they want to hide.

  68. There is shame that has entered into the human experience.

  69. They feel exposed and unclean, and they're seeking to hide both from one another and from the Lord God.

  70. If guilt belongs in the courtroom, then shame lives in the community.

  71. I don't know if any of you have read Nigel Hawthorne's book, A Scarlet Letter.

  72. The main character in that book is a young woman by the name of Hester Prynne.

  73. And Hester had to wear a scarlet A around her neck as a mark of shame,

  74. a badge of shame because of adultery that she had committed in her past.

  75. A story that really reflects on shame and community.

  76. But we know too that as well as shame being something that's heaped on us from other people,

  77. it's also something that we can pour on ourselves.

  78. Shame can come because of experiences and actions.

  79. Sometimes where we're the active agent and we have wronged someone,

  80. and shame is one of those consequences that we feel,

  81. but sometimes we're passive.

  82. We feel shame because of wrongs that have been done to us.

  83. And what's really important for us as we set out on looking at this theme

  84. is to remind ourselves that when God created man and woman,

  85. Genesis 2 verse 25, we're told that they were naked and they were unashamed.

    Genesis 2:25

  86. We were not created to bear that weight of shame,

  87. and therefore there is hope in God and in the good news of Jesus

  88. that that shame can be removed.

  89. And that's what takes us to today's account in John chapter 21,

    John 21 chapter mention

  90. where we have, in a sense, the rehabilitation of Peter by Jesus the Savior.

  91. But just before we get into that, just an important clarification to make,

  92. that we're very much dealing here this morning as we were last week

  93. with what we might call low-level anxiety about shame or failure.

  94. But we need to recognize that for some people that anxiety runs much deeper.

  95. It might be clinical, requiring medical help, requiring counseling,

  96. requiring medication, etc.

  97. Ultimately, the healing of the Lord Jesus is the hope for us all,

  98. that he is the one who brings help at that deep spiritual level.

  99. But that's not to downplay, of course, the importance of seeking professional help

  100. where that's required.

  101. Now, having said that, let's see together how Jesus deals with Peter

  102. and how it speaks to us.

  103. The first thing I want to say is that Jesus offers hope beyond your failure.

  104. What is Peter's story up until this point?

  105. Well, we read in Luke chapter 5 of Peter being called from his occupation

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  106. as a professional fisherman by Jesus to become a fisher of men.

  107. He was going to share in the work of Jesus, bringing the message of Jesus,

  108. the news of the kingdom of God to others.

  109. But now we find him, along with some of his contemporaries, fellow disciples,

  110. and verse 3, Peter says, I'm going out to fish.

  111. And they say, we'll go with you.

  112. And they're all out there in the boat.

  113. Now, there's nothing wrong with that,

  114. but you do get a sense that somewhere along the line,

  115. Peter's mission has been lost.

  116. That rather than being a fisher of men, here he is out fishing.

  117. Now, why is that?

  118. Well, we read, didn't we, in John chapter 18,

    John 18 chapter mention

  119. and we could have read in other places,

  120. that Peter had very much failed Jesus in his point of need.

  121. Peter had been the most confident of all the disciples,

  122. saying to Jesus things like, I'll never let you down.

  123. Everyone else might, but I never will.

  124. I will die for you.

  125. Peter could say, did say.

  126. But he abandons Jesus with the others that Jesus arrests,

  127. and he runs.

  128. And then in that trial scene, he denies even knowing Jesus.

  129. But here's the wonderful thing,

  130. that Peter has failed Jesus,

  131. but Jesus is not finished with Peter.

  132. Here we are in a post-resurrection scene.

  133. Jesus has died.

  134. Three days later, he's come back to life,

  135. and then he's making these appearances to his disciples.

  136. And here is one of these,

  137. in which he issues Peter, in a sense,

  138. with a new call to mission

  139. that recalls that first call to mission.

  140. That we notice that both in Luke 5 and here,

  141. the call of Jesus happens in the same place,

  142. by the Sea of Galilee.

  143. Now here it's described as the Sea of Tiberias.

  144. And we notice to just how similar the two miracles were.

  145. That both times, the fishermen have been out all night

  146. and have caught nothing.

  147. Jesus tells them, throw out your net,

  148. and there's this huge catch of fish.

  149. Here is Jesus deliberately taking Peter back

  150. to that moment where he was called at first.

  151. And when John, in verse 7,

  152. the disciple whom Jesus loves,

  153. having reflected on what's just happened

  154. in this massive catch of fish,

  155. says to Peter, it is the Lord,

  156. we've got this wonderful movement of Peter

  157. where instantly he's running towards Jesus.

  158. We might expect the opposite

  159. because he's failed him hugely.

  160. But he recognizes in Jesus

  161. the extension of undeserved grace.

  162. That Jesus is offering kindness and restoration.

  163. That Jesus is continuing to provide for Peter

  164. despite and beyond his failure.

  165. We see that physically.

  166. In verse 9, Jesus has prepared breakfast.

  167. While these professional fishermen couldn't catch anything,

  168. Jesus has got a barbecue going,

  169. there's fish on it, and there's some bread.

  170. And then in verse 12, there's the invitation,

  171. come and have breakfast.

  172. So he's providing for Peter and the others physically,

  173. but also spiritually.

  174. The same word used for fish there is,

  175. it's a deliberate choice because in John chapter 6,

    John 6 chapter mention

  176. John who writes his gospel also uses that same word fish.

  177. And it takes us back to the feeding of the 5,000.

  178. When Jesus multiplied a few loaves and two fish

  179. to feed a huge crowd.

  180. And after that, Jesus declared,

  181. I am the bread of life.

  182. And he called on people to, as it were,

  183. feast on his body and his blood.

  184. An image that before the cross,

  185. people didn't understand,

  186. and some were horrified by.

  187. But now after the cross,

  188. it's clear to Peter that Jesus is inviting him

  189. to feast on that forgiveness that is available to him

  190. because of the sacrifice that Jesus had offered on the cross.

  191. That here is this spiritual gift

  192. of forgiveness, of restoration, of reconciliation.

  193. Did Peter feel the weight of his failure?

  194. Of course he would have because he's human.

  195. But those fears and that weight is met by

  196. Jesus calling him friend

  197. and that invitation from Jesus to come.

  198. Jesus offers hope beyond failure.

  199. As we read through both Old Testament and New Testament,

  200. what we find is a catalog of heroes

  201. whose lives are redeemed from failure.

  202. People like Jacob, who lied and deceived to inherit.

  203. Moses, who was a murderer.

  204. King David, guilty of adultery and organizing a murder.

  205. Jonah, the prophet who ran from God.

  206. Saul, the one who was determined to destroy the church of Jesus Christ.

  207. But all of them received grace and mercy

  208. beyond these failures.

  209. There is hope for us.

  210. I wonder today, is there anybody here holding back from God

  211. due to a failure in your life?

  212. imagining that there is some sin, some mistake,

  213. some wreck that you've created

  214. that's too great for God to want anything to do with you.

  215. I wonder if there's anyone here punishing themselves

  216. rather than coming to Jesus

  217. to find hope and healing.

  218. Martin Luther, the reformer,

  219. Luther says this to those who would be tempted

  220. to stand on the sidelines thinking that you're too bad.

  221. Luther says,

  222. join the company of hard-boiled sinners.

  223. Jesus is a savior and redeemer

  224. from real, from great, from terrible sins.

  225. We need to beware the lie that would say that we are unworthy

  226. and that our sense of worthiness would keep us

  227. from the mercy of God.

  228. Because what we discover in the Bible,

  229. what we discover in Peter's story,

  230. is that our shame, our sin, our failure

  231. is outweighed by our need for mercy

  232. and God's desire to extend that mercy to us.

  233. That Jesus' death on the cross

  234. is sufficient to cover all of our darkest moments.

  235. We are not to put our sin

  236. as being something greater than

  237. the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

  238. As if we are in a special category.

  239. Jesus can heal of all sin.

  240. And hope begins

  241. when we humbly own our failure,

  242. when we acknowledge our unworthiness,

  243. but we don't run from Jesus.

  244. Instead, we run to hear that invitation

  245. to forgiveness,

  246. to restoration,

  247. to reconciliation.

  248. There's a Christian author

  249. from New Zealand

  250. by the name of Rita Snowden.

  251. And she said this in an interview.

  252. She said,

  253. You can ask me what forgiveness means.

  254. It is the wonder

  255. of being trusted again by God

  256. in the place

  257. where I disgraced Him.

  258. There is grace beyond disgrace.

  259. That's Peter's testimony.

  260. That can be yours too.

  261. And what about as Christians

  262. when those feelings of guilt

  263. and shame and unworthiness

  264. rise up again in our own minds?

  265. When those events from our past

  266. come back to haunt us?

  267. We will, towards the end of the service,

  268. be singing a hymn

  269. before the throne of God above.

  270. I find myself often going back

  271. to the words in the second verse

  272. which say,

  273. When Satan tempts me to despair,

  274. and he will, and he does,

  275. and we know this,

  276. and tells me of the guilt within,

  277. that guilt that is real,

  278. and we know that too.

  279. Upwards I look

  280. and see Him there

  281. who made an end

  282. to all my sin.

  283. What's our response?

  284. What's our response?

  285. It's to pray the gospel.

  286. It's to live with hope

  287. in the gospel.

  288. It's to shift our focus

  289. from our failure

  290. back onto the cross of Jesus.

  291. Jesus shows to us

  292. the undeserved love of God,

  293. and that's our hope

  294. beyond our failure.

  295. The second thing

  296. to notice

  297. in the story of Peter here

  298. is that Jesus offers hope

  299. beyond your shame.

  300. In verses 15 to 17.

  301. So if Jesus has deliberately recalled

  302. that first call that He made

  303. to Peter to become a fisher of men,

  304. Jesus also recalls for Peter

  305. His denial,

  306. takes him back

  307. to that time around the fire

  308. where He denied three times

  309. even knowing Him.

  310. Jesus takes him

  311. to that painful place

  312. in order that He might

  313. provide healing,

  314. like the surgeon

  315. who needs to cut

  316. in order that He might heal.

  317. And there's two ways

  318. that this shows itself

  319. in John's account.

  320. Again, John very deliberately

  321. in verse 9

  322. uses a specific word

  323. for a charcoal fire.

  324. When they landed,

  325. they saw a fire

  326. of burning coals

  327. there with fish on it.

  328. The only other place

  329. where that's used

  330. is in John chapter 18.

    John 18 chapter mention

  331. The same fire,

  332. charcoal fire.

  333. Peter is warming himself

  334. while Jesus is on trial

  335. and Peter denies knowing Him.

  336. And if you've ever lit a barbecue

  337. or been around a charcoal fire,

  338. you know that it's a strong smell.

  339. And smells can evoke

  340. strong memories for us,

  341. can't they?

  342. Smells that take us back

  343. to granny's home cooking.

  344. Smells that we associate with

  345. Christmas perhaps.

  346. Smells can do that

  347. in our brain.

  348. They can take us back

  349. to places and times

  350. and events.

  351. You can well imagine

  352. for Peter

  353. around a charcoal fire,

  354. what would burn

  355. in his mind

  356. would have been

  357. that denial

  358. that he made.

  359. That most shameful

  360. episode

  361. of his life.

  362. But Jesus takes him back

  363. there

  364. in order to

  365. heal.

  366. We read

  367. in verses 15 to 17

  368. that

  369. that conversation

  370. after breakfast

  371. between Jesus

  372. and Peter.

  373. Just as Peter

  374. had denied

  375. three times

  376. knowing Jesus,

  377. that's called to mind

  378. three times

  379. by that question.

  380. Simon,

  381. do you

  382. love me?

  383. And by

  384. three times

  385. receiving

  386. the commission,

  387. feed my lambs,

  388. take care of my sheep,

  389. feed my sheep.

  390. Here again

  391. is the grace

  392. of Jesus.

  393. Here is

  394. Jesus

  395. seeking to bring

  396. as it were

  397. a memory

  398. replacement

  399. for Peter.

  400. What will

  401. the smell

  402. of burning

  403. charcoal

  404. mean to Peter

  405. now?

  406. Well,

  407. it's around

  408. this fire

  409. where Jesus

  410. showed him

  411. great love,

  412. giving him

  413. work to do

  414. despite the fact

  415. that he made

  416. such a mess

  417. of things.

  418. It's significant

  419. in the conversation

  420. that we see

  421. Jesus

  422. challenges

  423. Peter's pride.

  424. It encourages

  425. him to humility.

  426. Do you

  427. truly love

  428. me more

  429. than these?

  430. Peter was

  431. the one

  432. who would

  433. say,

  434. I'm better

  435. than them,

  436. I love

  437. more than

  438. them,

  439. but gone

  440. now

  441. is that

  442. pride.

  443. Peter

  444. rests his

  445. hope

  446. in being

  447. known

  448. by Jesus,

  449. being loved

  450. by Jesus,

  451. and responding

  452. to that love

  453. with his

  454. own.

  455. Ed Welch,

  456. the biblical

  457. counselor,

  458. says that

  459. the king

  460. prefers his

  461. ambassadors

  462. weak and

  463. needy,

  464. and those

  465. qualities

  466. are at the

  467. top of

  468. an unworthy

  469. person's

  470. resume.

  471. Jesus

  472. here takes

  473. Peter in

  474. his weakness,

  475. in his need,

  476. in his shame,

  477. and he turns

  478. his shame

  479. into honor.

  480. As he gives

  481. him this

  482. job to

  483. feed,

  484. to take

  485. care of

  486. the lambs

  487. and the

  488. sheep,

  489. in other

  490. words,

  491. to teach

  492. and to

  493. lead the

  494. church

  495. and the

  496. message

  497. and the

  498. ways

  499. of

  500. Jesus.

  501. Here

  502. is hope

  503. beyond

  504. shame.

  505. Shame

  506. makes us

  507. want to

  508. run

  509. and hide,

  510. but from

  511. the beginning,

  512. what we

  513. discover,

  514. it is the

  515. goodness of

  516. God,

  517. the God

  518. who moves

  519. towards us

  520. to cover

  521. our shame.

  522. The first

  523. time shame

  524. entered into

  525. the world,

  526. what did

  527. God do?

  528. He came

  529. searching for

  530. Adam and

  531. Eve,

  532. where are

  533. you,

  534. wanting

  535. relationship,

  536. and he

  537. covered them,

  538. he clothed

  539. them,

  540. and he

  541. promised a

  542. saviour,

  543. a deliverer,

  544. a champion

  545. who would

  546. come to

  547. bring an

  548. end to

  549. sin and

  550. shame.

  551. It's the

  552. same in

  553. the story

  554. of Peter.

  555. Jesus

  556. moves

  557. towards

  558. him to

  559. cover his

  560. shame.

  561. It's the

  562. great message

  563. of the

  564. cross

  565. that we

  566. bring our

  567. sin,

  568. our shame,

  569. our failure

  570. to Jesus.

  571. He bears

  572. it,

  573. he carries

  574. it,

  575. he covers

  576. it,

  577. so that we

  578. might know

  579. his love,

  580. that his

  581. love and

  582. his grace

  583. might be

  584. what define

  585. us,

  586. not our

  587. sense of

  588. shame or

  589. failure.

  590. Just as we

  591. close,

  592. John,

  593. who writes

  594. this gospel,

  595. wants us to

  596. be absolutely

  597. sure that

  598. it's the

  599. resurrected

  600. Jesus who

  601. offers hope

  602. beyond shame.

  603. So in

  604. chapter 21

  605. and at

  606. verse 1,

  607. we're told

  608. that this

  609. is another

  610. appearing of

  611. Jesus.

  612. And then in

  613. verse 14,

  614. this was

  615. now the

  616. third time

  617. Jesus appeared

  618. to his

  619. disciples after

  620. he was

  621. raised from

  622. the dead.

  623. Very

  624. deliberately

  625. drawing attention

  626. to that fact.

  627. Why does

  628. that matter?

  629. Well,

  630. it reminds

  631. us that

  632. Jesus has

  633. gone through

  634. the cross,

  635. that Jesus

  636. has experienced

  637. for his

  638. people the

  639. shame and

  640. the humiliation

  641. of rejection.

  642. of being

  643. beaten and

  644. mocked and

  645. spat at and

  646. being laughed

  647. at and

  648. hanging naked

  649. and dying

  650. under God's

  651. curse,

  652. dying as

  653. though he

  654. were a

  655. failure.

  656. Why?

  657. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12:2

  658. chapter 12

  659. verse 2,

  660. Jesus,

  661. for the joy

  662. set before

  663. him,

  664. endured the

  665. cross,

  666. scorning its

  667. shame,

  668. and sat

  669. down at

  670. the right

  671. hand of

  672. God.

  673. Jesus took

  674. that shame

  675. and he

  676. treated it

  677. as a

  678. small thing,

  679. as an

  680. insignificant

  681. thing,

  682. because of

  683. future glory,

  684. because of

  685. the resurrection,

  686. because of

  687. his return

  688. to the glory

  689. of heaven.

  690. His

  691. resurrection

  692. stands for

  693. us as

  694. proof.

  695. There is

  696. hope beyond

  697. shame.

  698. Jesus at

  699. the cross

  700. is treated

  701. as the

  702. scum of

  703. the earth.

  704. He faces

  705. that judgment

  706. for you

  707. and for

  708. me,

  709. so that in

  710. him,

  711. you and I

  712. can live

  713. with hope

  714. that if our

  715. lives are

  716. defined by

  717. what Jesus

  718. did on

  719. the cross,

  720. that we

  721. can trust

  722. him,

  723. that our

  724. shame can

  725. be turned

  726. to honor.

  727. We may

  728. feel, as I'm

  729. sure Peter felt,

  730. hopeless, ashamed,

  731. worthless, but

  732. we have in

  733. Jesus the

  734. king of all

  735. glory and

  736. honor, and

  737. he chooses

  738. to associate

  739. with us,

  740. and that

  741. because of

  742. his honor,

  743. we share

  744. in that

  745. honor, that

  746. we have an

  747. invitation,

  748. come to

  749. me, that

  750. can set us

  751. free from

  752. shame and

  753. failure and

  754. bring us

  755. home.

  756. There is in

  757. Jesus the

  758. promise of

  759. healing, that

  760. that weight of

  761. shame and

  762. failure that we

  763. carry will not

  764. be forever,

  765. that in the

  766. gospel that

  767. process of

  768. healing begins

  769. now, and

  770. it will be

  771. made complete

  772. in eternity,

  773. that we will

  774. stand face

  775. to face

  776. before our

  777. Savior without

  778. shame and

  779. full of joy.
