  1. How you guys doing?

  2. Oh, come on.

  3. I mean, I literally have, you know, I've tried not to say that for like a year now because

  4. my wife is getting on me because I said that every time I got up to preach and she's not

  5. here right now.

  6. So I figured I could get away with it at least one time.

  7. And then that's the response.

  8. That's not very good at all.

  9. How you guys doing?

  10. Okay, that's good.

  11. When she comes back next week, don't tell her I said any of that, okay?

  12. Because that's just not good.

  13. But, you know, it's great to be back in Hong Kong with Watermark and we had a great summer.

  14. And you guys, the staff did better without me here than when I'm here, which is a great

  15. sign, right?

  16. It means it's not dependent on one person or things like that.

  17. And so we were back in the summer and I just got to tell you, for me, oh, by the way, if

  18. you've been here for four weeks, my name is Tobin.

  19. I'm one of the staff here.

  20. So, yeah, so welcome to Watermark.

  21. We're glad you're here on this journey with us because it's a journey and we're learning

  22. and God is teaching us so many things.

  23. And for me, I just continue to learn how much I need.

  24. I'm just thinking of that song when you're saying, Lord, I need you, Lord, I need you,

  25. you know, I need you.

  26. And I'm just wondering, what do we think when we sing that song?

  27. What comes to your mind when you say, God, I need you?

  28. Lord, I need you.

  29. You know, I said that a lot this summer, parenting and learning how to parent four kids that brings

  30. a level of chaos into our house.

  31. And it never fails.

  32. You know, right when you're about to go off on this long trip and you have eight people

  33. packed because you have grandparents packed in the minivan and you're about to go and

  34. you're going to drive for five hours on one of the dangerous, terrible roads in Texas from

  35. Dallas to Austin.

  36. It should take you two and a half hours, but it ends up taking about six hours because of

  37. construction.

  38. And you're on the road in about 30 minutes.

  39. You're the littlest one.

  40. And they ask that question that all parents dread.

  41. You know that question.

  42. You know what I'm talking about, right?

  43. What is the question they ask?

  44. Are we there?

  45. No, they ask you, when are we going to get there?

  46. And I'm like, oh, it's going to be about four and a half hours.

  47. And she goes, I hope we get there in an hour.

  48. And I'm sitting there.

  49. And for the next four and a half hours, I hear, when are we going to get there?

  50. And I hope we're going to get there in an hour.

  51. And I started hoping a lot of other things, which I probably can't share because I'm a

  52. pastor.

  53. You're not supposed to share bad things.

  54. But I did.

  55. But this summer was a summer of hope.

  56. I learned a lot.

  57. I continue to realize how much we need God in every area of our life.

  58. And if we ever get to a place where we don't need him, we're lost.

  59. Because what that means is we can do it on our own.

  60. I watched TV this summer like I've never watched before because my in-laws watch it and watch

  61. the news over and over.

  62. And the theme that kept coming up over and over was this theme of need.

  63. It was amazing to watch the radio and watch the news and listen to the radio and hear people

  64. talk about just the hopelessness in the world around us, the need people have for somebody

  65. to come in and to fix their lives, to make things right.

  66. It seems like everywhere we look, people were without hope.

  67. They're without hope on a mountaintop running for their lives with no food.

  68. They're without hope within the borders.

  69. They're out without hope with the political system.

  70. They're without hope in the judicial system.

  71. People have given hope in the governments.

  72. People are giving up hope in themselves.

  73. And everywhere, and all of a sudden this guy on the TV, he says this thing that I'm like,

  74. yes, yes.

  75. He goes, now, you know, we used to be the now generation.

  76. But it seems like we're turning into the hopeless generation.

  77. And I watched it, and I almost wanted to turn it off because I was just so depressed with

  78. the hopelessness that we see around us in the world.

  79. And Scripture talks so much into that.

  80. It speaks so clearly to that.

  81. It gives us a hope that transcends everything.

  82. It gives us a hope beyond our own understanding.

  83. It gives us a hope beyond ourselves.

  84. It gives us the hope in a man, God, named Jesus Christ, who came to make all things right,

  85. who came to fix all things.

  86. And I watched these stories, and I just felt this incredible sense of hopelessness until

  87. I remembered who I was in the hope that God has given us through his son, Jesus.

  88. Have you ever felt that way?

  89. We talked about it last week in 1 Peter 1, verses 1 through 12.

    1 Peter 1:1–12

  90. And in it, we came down to this realization that we all, if we are God's children, no matter

  91. what's going on, because it's very interesting, because 1 Peter's happening amongst his

  92. persecution, the Christians have gone out, things are getting really tough in the Roman

  93. Empire.

  94. I mean, you know, we think our lives are hard and difficult because we've lost our job

  95. and other things, and those things are hard.

  96. But these people, they're like the people on the mountaintop.

  97. They have no food.

  98. They're running for their lives, and the people behind them, they're killing them.

  99. And that's what's going on here, and that's what Peter's speaking into.

  100. And he's saying, this is what it means to be without hope, but this is where hope comes

  101. from, and hope comes from God who cares, even amidst the craziness.

  102. And he reminded us that if our hope is just here and now, if we just hope in what's going

  103. on around us, we're going to be lost.

  104. Because the here and now is not our home.

  105. The here and now is just a temporary resting place for us.

  106. But eventually, we're going to get to a true home.

  107. And Peter reminds the Christians, and he reminds us over and over that we need to remember

  108. where our true home is.

  109. We need to remember who our true Father is.

  110. We need to remember who we are.

  111. And the moment we forget that, we lose hope.

  112. We lose purpose.

  113. We lose meaning.

  114. Today, we're going to look at the next step of that.

  115. And the next step is this, and it's going to be one of these topics that pastors sometimes

  116. hate to talk about, because every time we talk about it, people roll their eyes.

  117. And my greatest fear is when I talk about it, you go, well, he must have his act together,

  118. or he's not that all together.

  119. And let me tell you, I don't have my act together, and I'm not all that together.

  120. And I'm probably the most broken person in this room, and I continue to learn God's mercy

  121. and his grace.

  122. And what Peter says in 1 Peter 13 and 16, and we're just going to look at the first three

  123. verses, because what he's done up until this point is saying, this is what God's done for

  124. you.

  125. This is what God's done for you.

  126. This is what God's done for you.

  127. Now, this is what we need to do as God's people.

  128. Now, if you're here right now, and you're not God's people, you're listening, you're exploring,

  129. these words aren't for you.

  130. I mean, our hope and our prayer is that one day they will be for you.

  131. Don't take these words and put them on people in your office and say, this is what you need

  132. to be doing, because if they're not in the family of God, it means nothing to them.

  133. It doesn't belong to them, and it has no power over their lives.

  134. But if you're here today, and you say, I'm a Christian.

  135. I've invited Jesus Christ into my life.

  136. I've repented of my sins.

  137. I turn daily and just ask for God's forgiveness.

  138. I sing that song, Lord, I need you, and I understand what it means.

  139. Then this passage is specifically for you.

  140. This passage is specifically for Watermark.

  141. And the passage is going to talk about holiness.

  142. What does it mean for us as a people of God to be holy?

  143. To be honest with you guys, I didn't even know if I was going to be able to get up here today.

  144. I've had food poisoning all night.

  145. I was sick all night.

  146. At about 3 o'clock in the morning, my gosh, this is the bad thing about not having a wife

  147. who cooks your food, right?

  148. Ladies, if you go away, please cook your husband some casseroles or something that's safe.

  149. But so God is just, so I'm praying for this time that God would speak to us as a church

  150. despite me communicating in the feeble way.

  151. Probably I'm going to make up some words, which I usually do when I'm getting sick.

  152. Just write them down, and we'll clarify those words later.

  153. But we're talking about holiness.

  154. And what I want to look at in this passage is I want to look at or try to look at three things.

  155. I want to look at just this idea of what is holiness?

  156. What does it really mean?

  157. Why should we be holy?

  158. And how do we grow in our holiness?

  159. What is holiness?

  160. What does it really mean?

  161. And why should we grow?

  162. Or how do we grow in our holiness?

  163. And so the first thing we just want to look at is what is the idea of holy?

  164. And I realize that often when we talk about holiness, people just roll their eyes,

  165. and they just kind of, okay, here's one of these talks again.

  166. We're going to talk about all these things, and I just want to give up because it's too hard.

  167. This is what C.S. Lewis said.

  168. He said, holiness is the great myth.

  169. He says that we think to be holy is a bad thing.

  170. We think that if we're holy, it will ruin our life.

  171. We think that if we're holy, it will take away our fun.

  172. It will take away our joy.

  173. But Lewis says, in fact, that whenever we see holiness, there's nothing more captivating to us.

  174. There's nothing that enamors us more than holiness.

  175. And when we meet a holy person, a tender person, a gentle person, a loving person, we're drawn towards them.

  176. I struggled with this when I was a young Christian, right?

  177. And when I heard people talk about holiness, what I thought it meant is, okay, forget everything.

  178. You're going to marry an ugly wife, and you're going to move to Africa.

  179. Now, that's just what I thought, okay?

  180. So it tells you, I was a young Christian, 16 years old, and guys were talking about being holy and walking with the Lord.

  181. And my view of holiness was, you marry an ugly wife, and you move to Africa.

  182. And that's just what holy people did, because that's all I experienced.

  183. And so I know that's not true right now, right?

  184. I married a beautiful wife, and we moved to Asia, right?

  185. But in those days, you know, help me get out of this.

  186. I don't know.

  187. But we struggle with the idea of what does it mean to be holy, and we look at these things,

  188. and we don't realize that it's something so far beyond what we talk about.

  189. What the Bible says is this.

  190. When you come to faith, God puts his spirit inside of you.

  191. That Holy Spirit enters into your life, and that Holy Spirit begins to change you.

  192. It changes how you talk.

  193. It changes how you think.

  194. It changes how you live.

  195. It changes how you view your money.

  196. It changes what you do with your time.

  197. It changes how compassionate you are, and how gentle you are, and how loving you are, and how kind you are.

  198. It changes all of those things in us.

  199. It makes us different.

  200. The Bible says that as Christians, we should be very different than the people who don't have God's spirit inside of us.

  201. The problem is that as I talk to people in Hong Kong about Christianity,

  202. one of the main reasons they reject Christianity is because the people that they know as Christians

  203. act, talk, think, use their money, vacation, and live just like they do.

  204. And so when we talk about Christianity and Christianity being different, they look at the people around them,

  205. and they think, why would I want this to happen?

  206. Because those people are no different than myself.

  207. They have the same values that I do.

  208. But what the Bible says is that when you come to Christ and God's spirit enters into you,

  209. you begin to become holy.

  210. You begin to change.

  211. You take steps towards the Lord,

  212. and as you take steps towards him,

  213. his spirit inside of you

  214. changes you,

  215. and you're different.

  216. Has that happened to you?

  217. Are you different?

  218. Are you more loving?

  219. Are you more kind?

  220. Are you more gentle?

  221. The Bible says if God's spirit's inside of us,

  222. then we start to change,

  223. and that change is defined as holiness.

  224. In verse 16, it says,

  225. you shall be holy,

  226. for I am holy.

  227. There's two focuses there.

  228. The first focus is on God,

  229. and when it says God is holy,

  230. what it means is he's pure.

  231. He's true.

  232. He's loving.

  233. He's untainted.

  234. He's beyond.

  235. He's transcendent.

  236. He's beyond our imagination.

  237. Holy is the adjective that describes God in everything.

  238. He's holy love.

  239. He's holy compassion.

  240. He's holy gentleness.

  241. He's holy wrath.

  242. He's holy judgment.

  243. It just supersedes every one of his characteristics.

  244. It tells us that he is so far different than we are.

  245. It tells us, it should tell us,

  246. that he's so far different than we are

  247. that we can trust him

  248. because he will always remain true.

  249. He will always remain faithful.

  250. He will always remain loving.

  251. No matter how hard you feel things are going,

  252. no matter how much you feel disappointed in him,

  253. God is always there.

  254. His holiness demands it,

  255. and he's there.

  256. When it says you shall be holy,

  257. it's a little different focus.

  258. It's the same focus of we're a mirror.

  259. We reflect God.

  260. We're doing everything that God does,

  261. and we grow.

  262. We don't become there right away.

  263. We're never going to get there right away.

  264. We're growing in that holiness.

  265. It's a step that we take baby steps towards him,

  266. and we're learning,

  267. and as we do things to prevent our old life

  268. from coming back in,

  269. God's spirit, that seed, the Holy Spirit,

  270. grows and changes and transforms us

  271. into something amazing.

  272. But for me, the easiest way to understand this

  273. is basically this.

  274. When it says you are holy,

  275. you are holy if you are God's people,

  276. all of it means is that you belong to God.

  277. Do you know that?

  278. What does holiness mean for you?

  279. What does holiness mean for the Christians at Watermark?

  280. It means that you belong to God.

  281. When you walk in that office on Monday,

  282. you belong to God.

  283. God has placed you there.

  284. It's not an accident.

  285. When you walk into that marriage relationship

  286. that's incredibly difficult

  287. because both of you are so self-centered and selfish,

  288. and there's been so many scars,

  289. God has called you to be holy.

  290. You belong to him.

  291. You allow that spirit living inside of you

  292. to change you

  293. and to make you different.

  294. We, as God's people,

  295. have to be different

  296. than the people who are not God's people.

  297. How are you different?

  298. How are you different in your classrooms?

  299. How are you different at work?

  300. How are you different in your families?

  301. What does it mean for you to live a holy life

  302. where God has placed you?

  303. I'm not going to tell you this is what it means

  304. because you need to find that out on your own.

  305. I can give you some guidelines

  306. because the spirit's working inside of you.

  307. You're reading God's word.

  308. You're experiencing your past.

  309. I don't know your past.

  310. You know your past.

  311. So some of you,

  312. it means to get rid of these things.

  313. And for some of you,

  314. it means to embrace these things.

  315. And for some of you,

  316. it means just keep walking day by day

  317. and taking little steps

  318. and just trusting the Lord

  319. and knowing that He's going to take care of you

  320. and you don't need to worry so much.

  321. But if you're the child of God,

  322. the scripture says that you are holy

  323. positionally,

  324. in front of heaven,

  325. progressively,

  326. you're walking every day

  327. trying to become more holy.

  328. And then one day

  329. when you meet Christ

  330. face to face,

  331. perfectly,

  332. you're going to look just like Him.

  333. The question is,

  334. are we different?

  335. Why are we called to be holy?

  336. Well, the first reason

  337. we're called to be holy

  338. is because God commands it.

  339. And whenever God commands something,

  340. it's a good idea for us to obey it.

  341. Right?

  342. Whenever God says,

  343. don't do this or do this,

  344. it's a really good idea

  345. for you to obey that.

  346. I think the problem I have sometimes

  347. is God didn't ever ask me

  348. before He did the law.

  349. And I wish God had asked me

  350. before He said,

  351. don't do this

  352. or only keep this amount

  353. or act this way

  354. because I really wish He,

  355. He needs my input,

  356. but God didn't ask me

  357. because He knows what we need

  358. and He's God.

  359. So the first reason

  360. that we are holy

  361. or that we pursue holiness

  362. is because God commands it

  363. in our life.

  364. How are we doing

  365. obeying that command?

  366. And there's a ten reasons

  367. I could give you

  368. why we should be holy,

  369. why we should be living in the mouth.

  370. Some of them are self-serving

  371. because we just know

  372. that to be holy

  373. is just the best thing

  374. causes the least problem.

  375. There's a lot of people

  376. who aren't Christians,

  377. but they know,

  378. hey, if I don't do this

  379. and I don't do this

  380. and I read these things

  381. and I'm just a better person

  382. and those are some things

  383. that happen with holiness.

  384. But the thing I want to share

  385. with us for Watermark today

  386. is one of the reasons

  387. that God has called us

  388. to be holy as His people.

  389. I was in a funeral yesterday.

  390. About 450, 500 people there.

  391. Young lady killed in a car wreck,

  392. Taiwan.

  393. Three incredibly beautiful kids.

  394. They live right next to us

  395. in our apartment complex.

  396. And I sat there

  397. and I thought about

  398. what kind of testimony

  399. had they had

  400. from the body of faith.

  401. Think about this.

  402. In the Old Testament,

  403. all the other nations,

  404. all the other tribes,

  405. all the other religions,

  406. they had gold idols,

  407. they had wood carvings,

  408. they had rocks,

  409. they had different things,

  410. and all these things

  411. represented their God,

  412. they represented their deity.

  413. And so when you were in Babylon

  414. and you wanted to see God,

  415. you went to the temple

  416. and you saw Dagon right there.

  417. Or when you were in Assyria

  418. and you wanted to see Kamesh,

  419. you'd go right there

  420. and you'd see them sacrificing

  421. little kids in front of it

  422. and we said,

  423. show us our God

  424. and they said,

  425. your God's right there.

  426. But the people of God

  427. didn't have those things.

  428. The people of God

  429. didn't have idols.

  430. They were successfully

  431. forbidden to do idols

  432. because God was so infinite.

  433. God is so great.

  434. God is so totally other.

  435. There's no way you can capture him

  436. within those pieces of wood or gold.

  437. And so what instead God did

  438. in Leviticus was

  439. he placed his imprint inside of us.

  440. When you think about it,

  441. the three books of the Bible,

  442. the first three, right?

  443. Exodus is God choosing a people.

  444. I mean, Genesis,

  445. God choosing a people.

  446. Exodus,

  447. God taking a people

  448. and giving them out of bondage

  449. and freeing them.

  450. Leviticus,

  451. God gives his people

  452. relationships within a law.

  453. So now there's these rules

  454. about what it means to be holy.

  455. And it's just not actions.

  456. It's just, you know,

  457. don't do this or do this.

  458. But there were certain things

  459. that were holy.

  460. There was a pen that was holy.

  461. There was a day that was holy.

  462. There was certain land that was holy.

  463. There was certain land that was unholy.

  464. Holy land would be like Texas.

  465. Unholy land would be like

  466. someplace else.

  467. I'm not going to say anything.

  468. But clothes were holy.

  469. So clothes didn't have to do anything

  470. with their actions

  471. or anything like that.

  472. Food was holy.

  473. Food was unholy.

  474. God's people

  475. were holy.

  476. So that when the people

  477. of the world looked

  478. and they said they wanted

  479. to see God,

  480. what did God do?

  481. He said,

  482. well, look at my people

  483. because my imprint's on them

  484. as you see them love,

  485. as you see them care,

  486. as you see them do justice,

  487. as you see them show compassion,

  488. as you see them give mercy,

  489. as you see my people

  490. do these things

  491. which are my character,

  492. you see me.

  493. watermark.

  494. We're the imprint

  495. of the God of the universe.

  496. His characteristics

  497. and his qualities

  498. have been put inside your life.

  499. And his spirit

  500. is growing those things

  501. and changing you.

  502. So the question is,

  503. when we go out

  504. into this community

  505. of Hong Kong

  506. on the western side,

  507. the central side,

  508. the eastern side,

  509. Kowloon,

  510. what do people see of God

  511. through our lives?

  512. What's their takeaway

  513. of God

  514. through us

  515. as a community?

  516. All the other nations

  517. could go,

  518. oh, here's the gold idol.

  519. Here's the wood.

  520. Here's the stones.

  521. Here's the mountain.

  522. But God's people said,

  523. here's the community.

  524. Within that community,

  525. you see God.

  526. How are we doing

  527. as a community?

  528. Are we giving the hope

  529. that the world around us needs?

  530. Are they seeing God

  531. live out through us?

  532. Are they seeing God's love

  533. and compassion?

  534. That's what it means

  535. for us to be his people.

  536. That's what it means

  537. for us to be holy.

  538. Does that make sense?

  539. Everybody's really quiet.

  540. That's an incredibly

  541. challenging thing for me.

  542. It's an incredibly

  543. challenging thing for me

  544. to know that every day

  545. I walk into a place

  546. and I represent God.

  547. It's an incredibly

  548. challenging thing

  549. for me to think about

  550. and just pray through

  551. because I make mistakes

  552. over and over.

  553. And again,

  554. we're not talking about

  555. we're getting there,

  556. but we're taking little steps

  557. to move towards holiness.

  558. What does it look like

  559. when people look at me?

  560. They see me impatient

  561. with my kids.

  562. I realize more and more

  563. how much I need grace

  564. and God's mercy

  565. in our life.

  566. And my prayer for us,

  567. each one of us in here

  568. is we would realize that.

  569. That we need to be

  570. focused on Christ

  571. over and over and over.

  572. So what is holiness?

  573. It means we belong to God.

  574. Why should we be holy?

  575. Well, God commands it.

  576. We need to obey him.

  577. And we're the community.

  578. And if we're not holy

  579. as a community,

  580. then everything we teach

  581. means nothing.

  582. If we're not loving

  583. as a community,

  584. if we're not reaching out

  585. as a community,

  586. if we're not caring

  587. as a community,

  588. if we're not helping

  589. as a community,

  590. if we're not giving hope

  591. as a community,

  592. if we're not being good friends

  593. as a community,

  594. then everything else,

  595. our representation

  596. of a holy God

  597. means nothing

  598. to a world

  599. that needs hope.

  600. And finally,

  601. how do we develop

  602. that hope in us?

  603. Because there's a two-part

  604. section here.

  605. I think often when we teach,

  606. we just say,

  607. well, God's giving you hope

  608. and you just trust him

  609. and that's it.

  610. Take care.

  611. Let go and let God.

  612. And you'll get more holy.

  613. Trust me, you'll work.

  614. That's not what Peter says here.

  615. Is that what Peter says here?

  616. Peter says,

  617. if you are holy,

  618. if you're walking with me,

  619. here's what I need you to do.

  620. Look at your verse 13.

  621. He says this,

  622. prepare your minds for action.

  623. Keep sober in spirit.

  624. Guard,

  625. keep sober in spirit.

  626. Fix your hope

  627. completely on the grace

  628. we brought to you

  629. as a revelation of Jesus Christ.

  630. That's kind of a command.

  631. Why do we need that command?

  632. Verse 14,

  633. it's the reason why.

  634. Because as obedient children,

  635. we tend to be conformed

  636. to our former lust.

  637. We tend to go back

  638. to our old ways.

  639. Here's an example.

  640. Don't do that.

  641. The Holy One.

  642. Look at Him.

  643. Follow Him.

  644. Watch Him.

  645. And in Him,

  646. you'll be like Him.

  647. So how do we become more holy?

  648. I just want to look at it

  649. really quickly

  650. and we'll finish up here.

  651. Verse 13.

  652. The first thing that Peter

  653. says to us to do

  654. is we need to prepare

  655. our minds for action.

  656. It's a very powerful word here.

  657. It actually comes

  658. from the Passover.

  659. Usually when we did

  660. a communion or Passover,

  661. the Jewish people

  662. would lay down

  663. and they would sit down

  664. and they'd just relax

  665. and have fun.

  666. But this comes from Leviticus

  667. and in Exodus

  668. and it's right before

  669. the people are about

  670. to leave Egypt.

  671. And when he says

  672. prepare your mind for action,

  673. it actually means

  674. gird your loins.

  675. So in Jesus' day

  676. and long before that,

  677. men wore long shirts

  678. all the way down here

  679. and then they wore a belt.

  680. And usually they wore

  681. a mantle over that shirt

  682. but they just wore

  683. these long shirts

  684. half cut off,

  685. they still do today,

  686. all the way down here.

  687. And whenever a guy

  688. did work,

  689. he had to come down here,

  690. grab his shirt,

  691. tuck it up,

  692. and then stick it

  693. in the belt.

  694. It's called girding.

  695. And so most guys

  696. would never do that

  697. unless they were in a battle

  698. or they had to run

  699. or they had to do work

  700. because it was undignified.

  701. But in a battle

  702. and running and working

  703. it was okay

  704. and so they left

  705. their things down here.

  706. But what Peter says is

  707. now that you are Christians,

  708. you need to prepare

  709. your minds for action.

  710. You need to gird your loins

  711. and the idea is

  712. we need to get ready for work.

  713. We need to think about

  714. what it means

  715. to be God's people.

  716. We need to understand

  717. what it means

  718. to read God's word

  719. and allow it to affect us

  720. and change us.

  721. We need to think about

  722. what it means for us

  723. to be a Christian

  724. in the workplace.

  725. It's amazing to me

  726. how often people take jobs

  727. and they never think about

  728. so what will this mean

  729. for me as a Christian here?

  730. So often people take jobs

  731. and just realize

  732. well I just need a job,

  733. I'm going to take any job

  734. or so people move

  735. to a different area

  736. but they never think about

  737. how that's going to impact

  738. their Christian life

  739. or their family.

  740. Can I be a good

  741. Christian witness here?

  742. Maybe it's an environment

  743. where it's almost impossible

  744. to be a good Christian

  745. witness here.

  746. I still need to do it

  747. if God's called me

  748. to do that

  749. but what does it mean

  750. for me to do it well?

  751. Well that's what Peter says.

  752. He says you need

  753. to prepare your minds,

  754. you need to gird up your loins,

  755. you need to think about,

  756. you need to get your mind

  757. in order,

  758. you need to think about

  759. what does it mean

  760. for us as God's people

  761. to live out a holy life

  762. wherever God puts us.

  763. The second thing he says

  764. is you've got to keep sober

  765. and again these are

  766. all choices guys,

  767. these are all choices.

  768. If you're here

  769. and you're a Christian

  770. and God's put his spirit

  771. in you,

  772. the spirit's there

  773. but I think so often

  774. most of us

  775. we don't even read

  776. God's word,

  777. we don't pray,

  778. we're not in a community

  779. and we just think

  780. well God's going

  781. to take care of me

  782. because he promised

  783. to take care of me

  784. and I don't really need

  785. to do anything

  786. and it's kind of like

  787. this socket right here,

  788. it's like this power source,

  789. I'm going to get in trouble,

  790. I know.

  791. But this is kind of like

  792. God's word

  793. and the Holy Spirit,

  794. right?

  795. And we're plugged in here

  796. and we're receiving

  797. God's word,

  798. I don't want to unplug

  799. my sound.

  800. But most of us

  801. don't even plug ourselves

  802. into God's spirit

  803. and power source.

  804. Most of us

  805. don't even read

  806. God's word,

  807. most of us

  808. don't even attend

  809. community,

  810. most of us

  811. don't think of God

  812. and there's this

  813. power source here

  814. and we wonder

  815. why our lives

  816. are a mess

  817. and why things

  818. are out of control.

  819. The word there

  820. actually means

  821. to be sober,

  822. don't to be drunk,

  823. to keep focused.

  824. Peter says

  825. as Christians

  826. one of our

  827. responsibilities

  828. to this Holy Spirit

  829. and God in us

  830. to grow

  831. and to change

  832. is to be sober,

  833. to keep a clear head,

  834. to think well,

  835. to stay focused,

  836. to understand

  837. what God's word says.

  838. What does the Bible say?

  839. To be able to reject

  840. false teaching

  841. and to follow

  842. true words.

  843. It's amazing to me

  844. whenever a new movie

  845. comes out like

  846. The Da Vinci Code

  847. or other things like that

  848. and they had this slant

  849. about Christianity

  850. or the Bible,

  851. how often the church

  852. just freaks out.

  853. And the reason is

  854. is that most of us

  855. are pretty shallow

  856. in our understanding

  857. of God.

  858. I mean,

  859. most of us,

  860. if we did the research

  861. that we've done

  862. since we've been

  863. a Christian

  864. at our workplace

  865. for our new job,

  866. we probably would have

  867. been fired

  868. a long time ago

  869. because we wouldn't

  870. even have known

  871. how to turn on

  872. the copy machine.

  873. But for some reason

  874. as Christians,

  875. we think that's okay.

  876. And so we treat

  877. God's Word

  878. really small.

  879. And we treat God

  880. really small.

  881. And we wonder

  882. why our lives

  883. become

  884. really small.

  885. And Peter says,

  886. be sober.

  887. Think clearly.

  888. Understand God's Word.

  889. understand the implications

  890. of it in your life.

  891. Be in a Bible study.

  892. Be in a community group.

  893. Gather with people

  894. who study the Word.

  895. Meditate on God's Word.

  896. Memorize God's Word.

  897. Allow it to understand it.

  898. Allow it to be barriers

  899. in your life.

  900. So the next time

  901. you hear something

  902. in your life

  903. and it causes you

  904. an incredible amount

  905. of tension and trouble,

  906. you can say,

  907. well, what does God's Word say?

  908. Nope.

  909. Next.

  910. But most of us

  911. hold it up

  912. and they go,

  913. well, Pastor,

  914. what does God's Word say?

  915. And I'm like,

  916. you can look that up.

  917. What do you think

  918. God's Word says?

  919. I'll give you the verses.

  920. Let's read it.

  921. Verse 14,

  922. he says,

  923. as obedient children,

  924. do not be conformed

  925. to the former lust

  926. which were yours

  927. in your ignorance.

  928. And that idea

  929. is like a jello mold.

  930. Jello mold.

  931. That so many of us,

  932. we've gone off

  933. as Christians

  934. and now we're new Christians

  935. but we don't know

  936. what the boundaries are.

  937. We haven't read God's Word.

  938. We're not sober.

  939. We're not focused.

  940. And our old nature

  941. is like this magnet

  942. and our old sin nature

  943. comes in

  944. and it grabs us

  945. and it tries to squeeze us

  946. into this mold.

  947. Peter says,

  948. be careful

  949. when it does that to you

  950. because it's going

  951. to destroy your life.

  952. I'm going to be

  953. in trouble here

  954. but I think this is

  955. why Christianity

  956. is so shallow

  957. in Hong Kong

  958. and America

  959. and the rest of the world.

  960. Because I think

  961. most of us come to Christ

  962. and we say a prayer

  963. but we really don't

  964. understand what that means.

  965. Most of us

  966. haven't repented

  967. of the sins

  968. that we used to do.

  969. Many of us

  970. still do the same sins

  971. we did before.

  972. Many of us

  973. still act

  974. the same way

  975. we acted before.

  976. And our Christianity

  977. is like that deep.

  978. And the sad thing

  979. is the only person

  980. we're fooling

  981. is ourself.

  982. Because everybody

  983. else around us

  984. especially non-Christians

  985. see that our Christianity

  986. is that deep.

  987. We came to Christ

  988. I said the prayer

  989. but

  990. and I'm speaking

  991. to myself

  992. many of us

  993. did it selfishly

  994. so that we don't

  995. have to be selfish

  996. on our own

  997. we let Jesus

  998. be selfish for us

  999. right?

  1000. Jesus is going

  1001. to be selfish

  1002. Jesus is going

  1003. to get us

  1004. the Rolex

  1005. he's going

  1006. to get us

  1007. all those

  1008. really cool

  1009. things that we want

  1010. Jesus is going

  1011. to do it

  1012. now we're just

  1013. going to pray

  1014. and Jesus

  1015. is going

  1016. to do it.

  1017. We never repented

  1018. we never said

  1019. that's wrong

  1020. we never said

  1021. sin is bad

  1022. we just said

  1023. so I was in a church

  1024. this summer

  1025. and I'm really thankful

  1026. it wasn't our church

1027. and we would check out

  1028. some churches

1029. and they had a testimony

  1030. and we probably need

  1031. to cut this off

  1032. and in the testimony

  1033. several people

  1034. came to be baptized

  1035. and the first person

  1036. came up

  1037. and they said

  1038. you know

  1039. I needed a job

  1040. and I really wanted

  1041. this type of car

1042. and I prayed about it

  1043. and you know what

  1044. I got this job

  1045. with this company

  1046. and they gave me

  1047. that exact car

  1048. God must be real

  1049. I'm here to get

  1050. baptized today

  1051. no repentance

  1052. of sin

  1053. no confessing

  1054. their need for God

  1055. no talking about

  1056. their brokenness

  1057. next person got up

  1058. you know

  1059. I've been single

  1060. for a long time

  1061. and I've been praying

1062. that God would give me

  1063. this guy

  1064. that was this tall

  1065. he had this color

  1066. of hair

  1067. he had this kind

  1068. of job

  1069. he made this amount

  1070. of money

  1071. and he drove

  1072. this type of car

  1073. and he was fun

  1074. and you know what

  1075. that guy came

  1076. into my life

  1077. praise the Lord

  1078. God must be real

  1079. so that's why

  1080. I became a Christian

  1081. today

  1082. no mention of sin

  1083. no mention of need

  1084. no mention of God's

  1085. holiness

  1086. and not ours

  1087. and I wonder why

  1088. Christianity

  1089. in Hong Kong

  1090. is so shallow

  1091. no wonder we have

  1092. a hard time

  1093. forgiving each other

  1094. and being nice

  1095. to each other

  1096. and loving each other

  1097. because we never

  1098. understood that

  1099. that's what God

  1100. did for us

  1101. we just think

  1102. God gave us

  1103. a nice car

  1104. and a good boyfriend

  1105. or a girlfriend

  1106. Peter says

  1107. be careful

  1108. because your old

  1109. nature

  1110. your old ways

  1111. is going to try

  1112. to drag you back

  1113. it's going to try

  1114. to consume you

  1115. it's going to try

  1116. to stick you

  1117. in this jello mold

  1118. it's going to try

  1119. to make you act

  1120. the same way

  1121. that you've always

  1122. acted

  1123. and probably

  1124. for many of us

  1125. here

  1126. we say

  1127. that's already

  1128. happened

  1129. I don't need

  1130. to worry about that

  1131. and finally

  1132. verse 13

  1133. Peter says

  1134. God has done

  1135. all these things

  1136. now this is what

  1137. you need to do

  1138. to continue to grow

  1139. in holiness

  1140. and be the people

  1141. of God

  1142. and be the people

  1143. that a lost world

  1144. a hopeless world

  1145. needs to see

1146. this is what you need

  1147. to do

  1148. is fix your hope

  1149. completely on the grace

1150. to be brought to you

  1151. at the revelation

  1152. of Jesus Christ

1153. actually if you read it

  1154. in Greek

  1155. that sentence says this

  1156. because that's the only

  1157. command in this sentence

  1158. what that sentence says

  1159. is fixing your hopes

  1160. completely on the grace

1161. to be brought to you

  1162. at the resurrection

  1163. of Jesus Christ

  1164. preparing your minds

  1165. for action

  1166. keeping sober in spirit

  1167. so the main focus

1168. is we fix our hopes

  1169. completely on what

  1170. grace

  1171. and when he uses

  1172. that word

  1173. what he means

  1174. is it's the

  1175. totality of everything

  1176. that God has done

  1177. for you

  1178. it's the totality

  1179. of God's mercy

  1180. his goodness

  1181. his blessings

  1182. his grace

  1183. it's what Peter says

1184. if you want to walk

  1185. with the Lord

1186. if you want to grow

  1187. in holiness

1188. if you want to be

  1189. God's people

1190. if you want to be

  1191. a reflection of what

  1192. it means to be

  1193. the church

1194. this is what you do

  1195. you fix your hope

  1196. solely and completely

  1197. on all that Jesus

  1198. has done for you

  1199. you think about it

  1200. every day

  1201. you ponder it

  1202. you wonder about it

  1203. when you get into

  1204. difficult times

  1205. you bring that up

  1206. and you say yes

  1207. but you know what

  1208. Christ has done

1209. it is so far greater

  1210. than what I'm experiencing

  1211. right now

  1212. I can trust him

  1213. because he's good

  1214. how are we doing

  1215. fixing our hope

  1216. what are we fixing

  1217. our hope in today

  1218. what are the things

  1219. that go through

  1220. our mind

  1221. what are the things

  1222. that it capture

  1223. and enamor us

  1224. what are those things

  1225. the passage

  1226. the passage

  1227. says

  1228. an amazing thing

  1229. it says

  1230. you and I

  1231. were lost

  1232. and the thing

  1233. about is

  1234. we didn't even

  1235. know we were lost

  1236. and God

  1237. the creator

  1238. of the universe

  1239. sends his son

  1240. he sends a lamb

  1241. and that lamb's blood

  1242. was shed

  1243. and that lamb's blood

1244. is so much more precious

  1245. than anything

  1246. you're going to

  1247. collect here on earth

  1248. it's more precious

  1249. than your cars

  1250. more precious

  1251. than your house

  1252. more precious

  1253. than your MPF

  1254. more precious

  1255. than anything

  1256. that you have

  1257. that lamb's blood

  1258. is so much more

  1259. precious

  1260. and what it means

  1261. to you

  1262. and to the people

  1263. who see you

  1264. is so much more

  1265. greater

  1266. than anything else

  1267. that you can bring

  1268. and collect

  1269. in your life

  1270. and the passage

  1271. ends

  1272. and the question

  1273. is

  1274. how do we

  1275. respond to that

  1276. that's God's people

  1277. what's our response

1278. how do we spend time

  1279. with the Lord

  1280. after all that

  1281. God has done

  1282. all these things

  1283. for us

  1284. this is now

  1285. what we're to be

  1286. as his people

  1287. this is how we're

  1288. to act

  1289. this is how we're

  1290. to love

  1291. this is how we're

  1292. to grow

  1293. in our holiness

  1294. the question is

  1295. will we

  1296. will we

  1297. let's pray

  1298. father we thank you

  1299. for this day

  1300. I realize right now

1301. that even as we speak

  1302. in the midst

  1303. of my words

  1304. which

  1305. I just pray

  1306. that you would

  1307. make them forget

  1308. anything that wasn't

  1309. of you

  1310. and you would not

  1311. let them forget

  1312. what is of you

  1313. I realize

  1314. that there are

  1315. some people

  1316. in here right now

  1317. who've been living lives

  1318. that are far

  1319. far away from you

  1320. they've been living lives

  1321. that are self-centered

  1322. and self-focused

  1323. and you've been

  1324. continually

  1325. touching their heart

  1326. you've been continually

  1327. touching their mind

  1328. you've been continually

  1329. opening their eyes

1330. the fact that they're here

  1331. and they're not Christians

  1332. is not

  1333. in a mistake

  1334. it's because your spirit

  1335. is moving in them

1336. and I pray for them

  1337. Lord

  1338. I pray that

1339. you would open their eyes

  1340. to your son

  1341. and that they would

  1342. enter into the family

  1343. they would

  1344. choose him

  1345. they would find

  1346. their hope

  1347. in Christ alone

  1348. and realize

  1349. that all that

  1350. you've given

  1351. is so much more

  1352. precious

  1353. than what they're

  1354. striving for

  1355. right now

  1356. Lord I know

  1357. that there are

  1358. some of us

  1359. in here

  1360. who are just

  1361. faking it

  1362. we're faking it

  1363. outwardly

  1364. we're one way

  1365. inwardly

  1366. we're another way

  1367. one way

  1368. at church

  1369. we're this way

  1370. outwardly

  1371. at work

  1372. we're a different way

  1373. and maybe vice versa

  1374. and when we look

  1375. at consistency

  1376. and reality

  1377. and holiness

  1378. we realize

  1379. that you haven't

  1380. called us

  1381. to be half holy

  1382. or partially holy

  1383. that you've called us

  1384. to be all holy

  1385. every part of us

  1386. and we know

  1387. that that's

  1388. steps that we take

  1389. towards you

  1390. Lord I pray

  1391. for my brothers

  1392. and sisters

  1393. who are faking it

  1394. that they would stop

  1395. life is too

  1396. precious

  1397. funerals

  1398. funerals

  1399. happen

  1400. too often

  1401. and if the life

  1402. that we're living

  1403. isn't a beacon

  1404. and a reflection

  1405. of your mercy

  1406. and grace

  1407. I pray that we

  1408. would stop

  1409. I pray that you

  1410. would make us

  1411. stop

  1412. take us out

  1413. of the picture

  1414. because your grace

  1415. and your mercy

  1416. and your word

  1417. and your name

  1418. is too holy

  1419. to be profaned

  1420. by us

  1421. Lord I pray

  1422. for all of us

  1423. here

  1424. we all need

  1425. you desperately

  1426. we'll never

  1427. get to a point

  1428. where we say

  1429. okay I'm okay

  1430. now

  1431. everything's good

  1432. but as Peter

  1433. says that we

  1434. continually fix

  1435. our hope

  1436. on the grace

  1437. and mercy

  1438. to be brought

  1439. to us

  1440. through your

  1441. son Jesus

  1442. Christ

  1443. Lord I pray

  1444. for us

  1445. as a church

  1446. help us

  1447. to be a church

  1448. that's different

  1449. help us

  1450. to be a people

  1451. that's different

  1452. Lord I pray

  1453. for us

  1454. as men

  1455. help us

  1456. be men

  1457. that are

  1458. different

  1459. because we're

  1460. Christians

  1461. Lord help us

  1462. to be wives

  1463. that are

  1464. different

  1465. because we

  1466. love you

  1467. help our

  1468. families

  1469. to be

  1470. different

  1471. as we

  1472. walk

  1473. amidst

  1474. the darkness

  1475. the people

  1476. desperately

  1477. need to

  1478. see your

  1479. son Jesus

  1480. Lord we

  1481. just help

  1482. us to repent

  1483. to confess

  1484. our wrongdoing

  1485. to confess

  1486. our brokenness

  1487. and our sin

  1488. Lord I pray

  1489. that we would

  1490. turn away

  1491. from those

  1492. things

  1493. and follow

  1494. you

  1495. Lord we

  1496. know you're

  1497. not asking us

  1498. to be perfect

  1499. but you're

  1500. asking us

  1501. to be a

  1502. people who

  1503. are yours

  1504. that belong

  1505. to you

  1506. may that be

  1507. true of all

  1508. of us in

  1509. here

  1510. may you

  1511. use those

  1512. things to

  1513. change

  1514. Hong Kong

  1515. and beyond

  1516. Father we

  1517. love you

  1518. and we

  1519. pray these

  1520. things in

  1521. your son

  1522. Jesus

  1523. holy name

  1524. amen

  1525. you
