  1. So we have been going through 1 Peter. We have been looking at different things in 1 Peter.

  2. Last week we had interesting conversations. We talked about how God developed these relationships in our lives and in our world.

  3. That we fit underneath those. We said there are institutions, our relationships.

  4. We said there's our relationship with God, our relationship with our government, our king, our relationship with our family, our relationship with our church, and our relationship with work.

  5. And all these things. Some people are kind of said they're like umbrellas that are underneath us or above us that protect us.

  6. And we said with each one of these structures there's an authority set up in it.

  7. And this authority structure is for the good of the people in it.

  8. And so what we've talked about was that there are some people who have authority and some people are under authority.

  9. And remember the idea of authority was always to protect and to respect and to bless and to serve those under the authority.

  10. The people who had authority were always supposed to protect, bless, and serve those under the authority.

  11. Because of the fall then we see people who have authority abusing the authority.

  12. But that is not the way God meant for it to be.

  13. We talked about the S word which people didn't want to talk about.

  14. We talked about submission.

  15. And what did that look like?

  16. And we said that submission was an attitude of our heart.

  17. And it was something that we had to deal with in our heart.

  18. And it wasn't something we forced upon another person.

  19. But it was something that they did within themselves.

  20. And scripture continually pointed out that the person who submitted wasn't the inferior person.

  21. That to submit was actually a position of power and of strength.

  22. And we talked a lot about the women last week.

  23. And so a lot of men were thanking my wife and all these things.

  24. But I wanted to really briefly talk about the men because I want to come back to the men because it's so important.

  25. Along this idea of authority and structure because we're going to move into it today.

  26. Because the structures are going to get broken.

  27. And bad things are going to happen today in the passage.

  28. And we're going to talk about suffering.

  29. But the passage last week said in verse 7 that the husbands in the same way are to live with their wives in an understanding way.

  30. It meant according to knowledge.

  31. According to study.

  32. It means that as a man you're to study your wife.

  33. To be a learner of her.

  34. To know what she likes.

  35. What she doesn't like.

  36. To know how to encourage her.

  37. You're to study her and to live with her as a weaker vessel.

  38. It doesn't mean worse or inferior.

  39. But it means delicate like a piece of china.

  40. It's something that's very valuable.

  41. And it says because she's a woman.

  42. In Hebrew the word actually means.

  43. One of the variations means she's your rescuer.

  44. The man is a servant leader.

  45. The woman is a servant follower.

  46. But it actually in Hebrew when I do weddings sometimes I say that the word actually means that the woman is the rescuer of the man.

  47. The man needed rescuing.

  48. And God created the woman.

  49. And so the guy is to take care of her.

  50. And then he says this very interesting thing.

  51. He says at the end of it he says or your prayers will be hindered.

  52. And what he's actually saying there is that as our relationship with our wife goes guys.

  53. So our relationship with God goes.

  54. Did you hear that?

  55. What Peter says and what Paul says and what the Bible says and what Jesus says is that.

  56. As our relationship with our wife goes.

  57. So our relationship with God goes.

  58. Peter in Ephesians says that just as Christ loved the church so you men should love your wives.

  59. And sacrifice for her.

  60. And die for her.

  61. And give yourself for her.

  62. You should love your wife as you love yourself.

  63. There shouldn't be a difference.

  64. You're on the same team.

  65. You're both wearing the same jerseys.

  66. So I can't say to myself when a buddy asks me how are you doing?

  67. And I'm saying I'm doing really good spiritually.

  68. I'm going to BSF.

  69. And I'm in Bible studies.

  70. And I'm in accountability groups.

  71. And I'm studying God's word every day.

  72. And everything looks good.

  73. I'm just really deep in God's word.

  74. And then he goes well how's your marriage doing?

  75. And you go well my wife and I aren't doing too good.

  76. We just can't connect.

  77. That's a total disconnect in the structure and in the authority.

  78. A guy can't be doing good spiritually with the Lord and be in Bible studies and studying and memorizing and having accountability.

  79. And then not being good with his wife.

  80. Because if he is, the passage says that we read last week that that is a brokenness.

  81. And his prayers are hindered.

  82. And he can't even talk to God because he can't get his relationship right with his wife first.

  83. Does that make sense?

  84. And I'm very passionate about this because I struggle with this.

  85. And when we do marriage counseling I'm usually pretty hard on the guy.

  86. Because the scripture passage says because of this institution, this structure that when men get to heaven,

  87. God's going to look at you and he's going to ask you what did you do with your family?

  88. Did you protect it?

  89. Did you bring it to a place of nourishment?

  90. Did you allow your wife and your kids to flourish?

  91. Did you take care of people?

  92. Because you're the leader.

  93. You're the servant leader.

  94. You're the authority.

  95. And that's your job.

  96. God's not going to ask your wives that.

  97. He's going to ask the men that.

  98. He's going to say did you serve yourself in your marriage?

  99. Sexually, physically, your needs, whatever.

  100. Did you serve yourself or did you serve your wife?

  101. Because as the authority figure, you're to serve yourself.

  102. And I talk to guys often.

  103. I talk to myself.

  104. You know, we have a way of kind of deceiving ourselves.

  105. And we can say sometimes, yeah, I'm doing it all for my wife.

  106. I'm doing it all for my kiddos.

  107. I'm working hard.

  108. I'm doing all these things.

  109. In reality, if we're honest, what we're saying really is that we're doing it for ourselves.

  110. And we're doing it for our egos.

  111. And Peter says that's not good.

  112. And that's not right.

  113. And your relationship with God is broken.

  114. Your relationship with your wife is broken.

  115. So that's why we're promoting the love and respect class.

  116. Because we want to encourage you guys to be a part of that.

  117. Because we all need help.

  118. Love yourself.

  119. Love your wife as yourself.

  120. Love your wife as Christ loved the church.

  121. As your relationship with your wife goes, so goes your relationship with God.

  122. Hopefully that's enough for us guys to think about.

  123. And ladies, you can thank me later.

  124. I hope.

  125. You know, we're talking to this passage today.

  126. And sometimes when I get to this passage today, it drives me crazy.

  127. There are certain passages in the Bible that drive me crazy.

  128. I don't think I've actually heard this passage ever preached again.

  129. Just like last week.

  130. There are certain passages you want to skip over.

  131. You don't want to go to them because they make you struggle.

  132. This passage today is on suffering.

  133. Because it's what we've been following about.

  134. That these structures are broken.

  135. And we're struggling against our community.

  136. We're struggling against our government.

  137. We're struggling against God.

  138. We're struggling against our marriage.

  139. And in the midst of these things, suffering comes.

  140. And you know, to be honest, I don't think people like talking about suffering.

  141. I mean, people don't talk about it in the church hardly at all, do we?

  142. I mean, we talk about, well, if you're suffering, come to Jesus.

  143. And he's going to make everything okay.

  144. We talk about that all the time.

  145. And that's how most people come to church.

  146. Is that, well, God's going to make my life perfect.

  147. And I'm not going to make more suffering.

  148. And it's going to be okay.

  149. But that's not what he's talking about here, is he?

  150. He's talking about we're suffering because we are Christians.

  151. And we're walking with the Lord.

  152. And that's scary for people.

  153. Because we want to think, well, I come to Christ and everything's going to be okay.

  154. And I'm never going to have troubles.

  155. And nothing's ever going to be difficult again.

  156. But Jesus, when he talks about these things, he says, that should be our current reality.

  157. That if we're a Christian and we're in the world, we're a minority.

  158. And this world is going to hate us.

  159. Did you know that?

  160. We talked about it the last couple weeks.

  161. We've said, and I've tried to say it different ways and different focuses.

  162. And let me try one more way.

  163. I don't know if this will work.

  164. But what he says, I've said that when we become Christians, God's spirit comes inside of us.

  165. And it changes us.

  166. And we begin to think differently.

  167. And we begin to talk differently.

  168. We begin to act differently.

  169. We begin to spend our money differently.

  170. We begin to treat our wives differently.

  171. And Peter says that whole same thing again.

  172. And he says it in his passage.

  173. And he says that when we come to Christ, it's like this baptism.

  174. We enter into Christ.

  175. And we enter into his life.

  176. And that's why we baptize people.

  177. And what we see is that when you get baptized, that all of your life is changed.

  178. The God's spirit has come in and he begins to change you.

  179. And now, instead of being white, you're blue.

  180. The spirit has come inside of you and he's changed.

  181. I could have used any color.

  182. It's the only one I found that maybe everybody could see here.

  183. You know, another reason I don't like to talk about sufferings, especially as Christians,

  184. is I don't think that I've ever really experienced it.

  185. I mean, not the way that some of my friends have.

  186. I mean, I've seen some friends.

  187. When I first went to Asia, Graham and his two sons, Philip and Timothy, 11 and 6,

  188. were ministering in a local village.

  189. And they had set up a camp there.

  190. And they went back every week to share the gospel to the people.

  191. And one night as they were there, they were grabbed by an angry mob of people

  192. who didn't like what they were sharing.

  193. And they put them in their car.

  194. And they burned them alive.

  195. Because they were teaching God's word.

  196. The next day they came and they found the bodies.

  197. And Graham had his arms surrounding his son.

  198. Because they were preaching God's word.

  199. When I read passages like today, I'm like, wow, I've never suffered like that.

  200. I've never struggled like that.

  201. But Peter is writing to all of us, whether we have done that or not,

  202. or will we do someday or some other way.

  203. He's writing to all of us.

  204. And he's saying, if we're changed, if God's spirit has come into us,

  205. then we're going to have troubles.

  206. We're going to have struggles.

  207. And the passage says, these are things that we want to do.

  208. These are things we have to do.

  209. Not things that you shouldn't do.

  210. When scripture tells us to do things, it's not saying, well, if you do this,

  211. if you like it.

  212. But what God is saying, in the current reality of the world,

  213. this is the best thing for you.

  214. And if you don't do it, then you're not doing the best thing.

  215. And so I want to talk really briefly just about suffering as Christians.

  216. I want to talk about the passage that says there's two things that we need to be careful of.

  217. There's two things we don't do, we should not do.

  218. There's several things we need to do.

  219. And then I want to talk about how we do it.

  220. How do we have the power to do it?

  221. How do we do it in the midst of suffering?

  222. What does it look like for us?

  223. Two things we don't do.

  224. What we should be doing in suffering.

  225. And then how do we do it?

  226. What's the power of it?

  227. What gives us the strength to live out our life after we've come into Christ?

  228. And I don't know what your suffering is looking like today.

  229. If it's like most people, it's probably taking place either in your home or your workplace.

  230. I mean, it might not be like Graham's,

  231. but the passage says that if you are a Christian,

  232. if you're, play with me here,

  233. if you're blue and you're living in a white world where everybody else is white,

  234. you're going to look different.

  235. You're going to cause people to be uncomfortable and things are going to happen.

  236. I mean, maybe at work, maybe you refuse to gossip and stab others in the back.

  237. Maybe you don't want to talk against people.

  238. You don't want to climb over people.

  239. You don't want to move up the order.

  240. You have information on people that you could dish it out and they could be fired

  241. or you could move above them.

  242. But because of your faith, you've chosen not to.

  243. You've chosen the Lord to be in charge of that relationship

  244. and you've taken the hit.

  245. In your character, maybe in your payroll, maybe in your position,

  246. you've chosen not to do those things because as a new creation,

  247. as a blue person living in the world that's not blue,

  248. you want to honor the Lord.

  249. I mean, some of us, we're going to suffer in work

  250. because we're going to refuse to change the numbers.

  251. Our boss is going to come to us and want us to cook the numbers

  252. or change the numbers and we're going to say,

  253. you know, I used to be able to do that, but now I just can't.

  254. Because it's not what God has called me to do.

  255. Some of us are going to suffer because we're going to be told and asked to sell product

  256. or stuff that's junk.

  257. I know that never happens in Hong Kong, but it happens in the rest of the world,

  258. in the markets that you're going to be asked to sell junk and crap

  259. and it's going to be worthless and you're going to know it's worthless.

  260. And if you don't sell it in the bank or wherever you're at,

  261. you're going to get in trouble.

  262. And you're going to feel pressure and tension and suffering because of your faith.

  263. And Peter talks about that.

  264. Some of us are going to suffer and I know for sure several friends who have suffered

  265. because they refuse to take clients to places that the world wants to go.

  266. Their clients want them to take them to all these places

  267. and they've decided in their life, that's just not who I am.

  268. God's changed me and I'm different than that.

  269. And they've suffered because they don't get the high paying clients anymore

  270. because they don't want to go to the strip clubs.

  271. And they've suffered for the gospel and for what it means to walk with the Lord.

  272. You know, some of us singles in here, some of you singles in here,

  273. you are suffering right now.

  274. You're compromising.

  275. I mean, you're suffering because you don't compromise.

  276. You've refused to get into the dating scene.

  277. You refuse to just marry somebody because now you have these different standards

  278. and you have these values and you don't do the things that you used to do

  279. in Leng Kui Fung or wherever you go to hang out.

  280. And your peers and your friends think you're odd.

  281. And they mock you.

  282. Because you're waiting for someone who's like-minded,

  283. who has the same values and the same heart.

  284. Can I share something really important with you?

  285. There's a lot worse things than not getting married.

  286. I mean, the worst thing is when you marry the wrong person.

  287. That's so much worse than getting married, not getting married.

  288. And some of you singles in here, man, you're facing it.

  289. And we talk and you just feel the pressure and you feel mocked.

  290. And Peter's talking about that in the passage.

  291. Some of you married, you're going to suffer.

  292. You're married to your spouse whose only God is themself.

  293. Some of us in here are married to spouses whose only God is themself.

  294. And you're blue and you're walking with the Lord.

  295. And it pains your heart to figure out,

  296. how can I walk with the Lord and also love my spouse?

  297. And we've talked about that last week a little.

  298. You know, some of you students, you're going to suffer.

  299. I mean, you're going to be in this academic situation

  300. and your peers and your teachers are going to say,

  301. study, study, study.

  302. Don't take any breaks.

  303. Grades are the most important.

  304. And you're going to say, you know, I'm different now.

  305. I've changed.

  306. And I realize that I have this relationship with God

  307. and I'm trying to honor Him and I'm trying to love Him.

  308. And I can't skip church.

  309. And I don't want to skip the community.

  310. And I don't want to skip the fellowship.

  311. And I don't want to skip reading God's Word.

  312. And all of your friends and all your relatives

  313. and all the people in your classes are going to say,

  314. you're a fool.

  315. Because you love God more than academics.

  316. And that's what Peter's talking about.

  317. When we walk with the Lord, we're going to be mocked

  318. because we're different.

  319. Our friends are going to call us religious.

  320. And the passage gives us some warnings here.

  321. It says, if we walk with the Lord,

  322. if we're walking in a world that's broken

  323. and not baptized in God's Spirit,

  324. if we are, there's a high probability

  325. that a couple things are going to happen.

  326. And he says, be careful of these things.

  327. There are warnings.

  328. Because on this faith journey,

  329. you and I are going to have it happen to us.

  330. And we're going to make mistakes.

  331. I'm not saying be perfect.

  332. I'm just saying be careful.

  333. Because I make these mistakes.

  334. And that's why I'm sharing these things.

  335. Because I make these mistakes all the time.

  336. Verse 14 says,

  337. when we suffer as a Christian,

  338. we will be tempted to fear men

  339. more than we fear God.

  340. We're going to be tempted to be in awe

  341. of status and power

  342. and wealth and influence.

  343. We're going to be tempted to see the things

  344. that we can see with our eyes.

  345. And we're going to be tempted to fear those things

  346. more than we fear in awe of God.

  347. The passage is a quote from Isaiah 8.

  348. And it's an amazing passage.

  349. It's a very relevant passage for today.

  350. Isaiah 8,

  351. the people of God are not in good shape.

  352. I mean, it's bad.

  353. The leaders are all corrupt.

  354. There's this massive army from the north.

  355. And they're about to invade.

  356. I mean, it's bad news.

  357. The Assyrians for hundreds of years

  358. have taken over cities.

  359. And every time they take over a city,

  360. they chop everybody's heads off

  361. and they just leave them at the front gate

  362. and said,

  363. if you defy us,

  364. this is what's going to happen to you.

  365. So everything in the people of God's eyes,

  366. they look around and they say,

  367. terrible, terrible, terrible,

  368. no hope, impossible.

  369. What are we going to do?

  370. I mean, they don't even pray

  371. because it's so bad.

  372. And then the king, Ahaz,

  373. who is totally corrupt

  374. and his authority structure is about him,

  375. he says, well, let's do this.

  376. Let's go to Egypt in the south

  377. and make an alliance with Egypt

  378. and maybe Egypt can come up

  379. and they can help us defeat our enemy.

  380. And God is watching all this

  381. and he says, no.

  382. And he sends Elijah to him.

  383. He sends Isaiah to him.

  384. And Isaiah goes to him and says,

  385. hey, guys.

  386. He doesn't say, hey, guys.

  387. But in Hebrew,

  388. he says the equivalent of,

  389. hey, guys.

  390. Don't do it.

  391. God is with you.

  392. No matter what you're doing,

  393. no matter how you're suffering,

  394. God is before you.

  395. Don't fear what you see with your eyes.

  396. Fear and awe God

  397. who you know with your heart.

  398. God even tells Isaiah,

  399. hey, you guys can ask for a sign.

  400. Ask for any sign.

  401. I'll do it.

  402. I want to show you that I'm there.

  403. I'm your God.

  404. I'm going to do it.

  405. And the people are so distraught.

  406. They're so fearful.

  407. They don't even ask for a sign.

  408. And God says, okay, I'll give you a sign.

  409. There's going to be a child, a virgin.

  410. She's going to be born with a child.

  411. His name's going to be Emmanuel.

  412. It's God with us.

  413. We read a passage every Christmas.

  414. The passage is about God's people

  415. who are in terrible trouble

  416. because they're suffering

  417. because they're Christians.

  418. And they're wondering,

  419. is God there?

  420. Does he hear me?

  421. Does he know?

  422. Is he listening to me?

  423. And the passage in Peter says,

  424. yes, he is.

  425. And yes, he does.

  426. And he's already gone before you.

  427. And don't give in to the fear.

  428. Don't give in to the suffering

  429. because God is there

  430. and he's working in your life.

  431. He's working in your marriage.

  432. He's working in your work.

  433. He's working in your families.

  434. He's working in your classrooms.

  435. He's working with your professors.

  436. God's already in control

  437. of all those things.

  438. Are you going to trust him with that?

  439. Are we going to release it

  440. and pray to him

  441. and be blue in the world

  442. that isn't like blue people?

  443. Or are we going to fear?

  444. Verse 15 says,

  445. don't fear.

  446. It actually says,

  447. sanctify the Lord.

  448. The word there means

  449. to hold Christ up,

  450. to set him apart,

  451. to trust him.

  452. It means to remember

  453. all that Christ has done before you.

  454. Chapter 4, verses 1,

  455. it says, arm yourself.

  456. The idea is to put on armor,

  457. but what it means is

  458. to remember all that Christ has done.

  459. When you're in the pain,

  460. when you're in the suffering,

  461. when you're fearful,

  462. when things look out of control,

  463. when it looks like there's no hope,

  464. arm yourself.

  465. Remember what Christ has said.

  466. Remember what Christ has done.

  467. Remember what he's been for you.

  468. Cling to those things.

  469. Remember those things.

  470. Hold him tight.

  471. Trust him in your journey,

  472. especially when you start to suffer.

  473. A question for us might be,

  474. what do we suffer?

  475. What do we trust when we suffer?

  476. When suffering happens in our life,

  477. what do we run to?

  478. What do we cling to and say,

  479. well, I just have enough of this.

  480. I can maintain it.

  481. Is it enough salary?

  482. Or enough drugs?

  483. Or enough connections in the business world?

  484. Or enough better grades?

  485. What is that?

  486. And here, Peter is saying,

  487. sanctify Christ.

  488. Remember in his heart what he's done.

  489. Put him on as your honor.

  490. Trust in him in your faith journey.

  491. Remember that he's working through those things.

  492. Verse 15 goes one step further,

  493. and he says,

  494. hey, and as you're doing that,

  495. be ready to share

  496. what's going on in your life.

  497. He says,

  498. be ready to share the hope

  499. of Christ in your suffering.

  500. As you're struggling,

  501. and as these things are hitting you,

  502. the word's actually there.

  503. It doesn't say you.

  504. It says you all.

  505. So it's a southern Hebrew person writing

  506. in our southern Greek person.

  507. But he says,

  508. as a community,

  509. when there's suffering all around us,

  510. all of us be ready to apologia,

  511. to make an excuse,

  512. to present the hope,

  513. to apologetics,

  514. to share why we're blue.

  515. And what does it mean to us?

  516. Be ready to do that,

  517. because people around us

  518. need to hear hope,

  519. especially in difficult times.

  520. They need to see what's going on.

  521. And it happens all the time, right?

  522. It happens in our homes.

  523. It happens at work, doesn't it?

  524. I mean, my kid comes home,

  525. and they say,

  526. well, you know,

  527. my teacher says it's stupid

  528. for me to believe in God,

  529. and that if I do,

  530. I'll never get past the MIT

  531. or Harvard interviewer.

  532. That a belief in God

  533. and academics is inconsistent,

  534. and I'll never get into that school

  535. you want me to get into,

  536. so what do I do?

  537. What do we say to the kid?

  538. Maybe you should listen to your teacher.

  539. Well, that's just how we live.

  540. Peter says that we should be prepared

  541. to share that hope with our kids

  542. and to talk to them

  543. about why we're changed

  544. and what it means in our lives.

  545. I mean, in work,

  546. you're going to get made redundant.

  547. You've been playing by all the rules.

  548. You've been the model person

  549. and Christian employer,

  550. employee in the office,

  551. and all of a sudden,

  552. the note comes down,

  553. and you're made redundant,

  554. and you've gotten fired,

  555. and people above you

  556. who are not nice,

  557. people who don't play that by the rules,

  558. who cheat,

  559. who stab you in the back,

  560. they're still there,

  561. and they're still moving.

  562. How do you react to that?

  563. When one of your friends

  564. comes up to you and asks you,

  565. well, how are you doing

  566. from the office?

  567. What do you say?

  568. You say, well, you know,

  569. stuff happens.

  570. Or, yeah, I don't know.

  571. But what Peter says is no.

  572. You use this suffering

  573. to come into people's worlds

  574. and you share with them

  575. the hope that you have

  576. why you entered into

  577. a relationship with Christ.

  578. What does it mean in your life?

  579. And why you do it?

  580. You know, I've seen

  581. so many people's lives

  582. changed by people in the church

  583. who've had terrible things

  584. happening in their work,

  585. and they've refused

  586. to go after the people.

  587. They've refused

  588. to bury the people.

  589. And some of them

  590. have been fired

  591. and they went to other jobs.

  592. And I've seen people

  593. actually seek them out

  594. in their new job,

  595. especially when

  596. the people's lives

  597. got difficult

  598. and trouble

  599. and suffering were happening.

  600. And they sought them out

  601. and said,

  602. dude, when you did that,

  603. that was amazing.

  604. I knew you believed

  605. in this God thing.

  606. Can you tell me more about that?

  607. What does that look like?

  608. I need that.

  609. I need that hope

  610. because right now

  611. I don't have any hope.

  612. Now, if these things

  613. that I'm sharing with you,

  614. they seem like,

  615. well, that's the right thing to do,

  616. but I just can't do it.

  617. Well, you know,

  618. we're having classes

  619. starting in two weeks

  620. about how to do that.

  621. Chris is gonna be teaching

  622. about how we live out our life

  623. and how we understand God's word

  624. and what does it look like

  625. to present the hope

  626. in our workplace

  627. and how do we respond

  628. to our kids

  629. and how do we respond

  630. to our friends

  631. if you're still struggling

  632. with that

  633. because I think we all do

  634. at some stage in our life

  635. because we just do.

  636. Come join the classes

  637. and be a part of that

  638. because that will help you

  639. on your journey.

  640. Verse 16 says,

  641. keep a good conscience.

  642. As you're suffering

  643. and as these things are happening,

  644. the conscience was this window

  645. to the soul

  646. in Hebrew culture.

  647. It was where the filter,

  648. where God's light came through

  649. and it touched our heart

  650. and where God's light

  651. came out of our heart

  652. and touched the world around us

  653. and sometimes our consciences

  654. are dirty.

  655. It's the filter

  656. before which we turn

  657. right and wrong

  658. and sometimes in our brokenness,

  659. we've made so many wrong choices

  660. that we've never just realized

  661. that we don't understand

  662. what right is anymore.

  663. and sometimes the things

  664. we think are right

  665. are wrong

  666. and Peter's warning us

  667. and he's saying,

  668. hey, be careful

  669. and repent

  670. and clean up your conscience

  671. and make choices

  672. with each other

  673. within community

  674. and don't allow your conscience

  675. to become dirty

  676. because then when you suffer,

  677. it's because you're

  678. suffering as a jerk

  679. or you're suffering

  680. because you're lazy

  681. or you're suffering

  682. because you are backbiting.

  683. But what Peter says

  684. is we want to suffer

  685. because we're walking

  686. with the Lord.

  687. He says,

  688. just as Jesus suffered physically

  689. and he triumphed spiritually,

  690. so will his people.

  691. I don't know how it works, guys.

  692. But there's just something

  693. about God's spirit

  694. that when it enters into us

  695. as his people,

  696. sometimes it just thrives

  697. on holy suffering.

  698. And you see it

  699. in people's lives, man.

  700. I've seen it in pastors in China

  701. who've been in prison

  702. for 30 years

  703. and they come out

  704. and there's just a difference

  705. in their life.

  706. I've seen it in holy marriages

  707. where women have been suffering

  708. for years and years

  709. and all of a sudden

  710. the guy comes to Christ

  711. and there's just a difference.

  712. I've seen it in holy workplaces

  713. where people have been suffering

  714. and suffering

  715. and doing the right thing

  716. and God has been meeting them

  717. and they change

  718. and there's something

  719. that God uses

  720. in the midst of physical suffering

  721. as Christians

  722. that changes us

  723. if we allow him to do that.

  724. Peter warns us one more time.

  725. He says,

  726. in the midst of the suffering

  727. in verses chapter 4,

  728. verses 2 through 4,

  729. in the midst of the suffering,

  730. in the midst of all these things

  731. going on,

  732. we are going to be tempted

  733. to go back to our old life.

  734. We're going to be tempted

  735. to identify with our old life.

  736. We're going to want to indulge

  737. in the things of the world.

  738. We're going to want to do

  739. all these things

  740. that we didn't do

  741. before we were baptized.

  742. We're going to want to do that

  743. because it's going to be,

  744. the draw is going to be

  745. so passionate and so hard

  746. and he says,

  747. don't do that.

  748. It's one of the reasons

  749. we stay in community

  750. in a church

  751. because we realize

  752. in a community

  753. it's harder for us

  754. to get broken.

  755. And what Peter says here

  756. in his passage

  757. is that you just look

  758. at a person's actions

  759. in the midst of suffering

  760. and our actions

  761. are always going to point

  762. towards what our hope is.

  763. And he uses an example

  764. of Noah.

  765. And you know the story.

  766. He tells the story

  767. in verse 20.

  768. He says that

  769. in the book of Noah,

  770. God looks at the world

  771. and the world's

  772. out of control.

  773. There's no one

  774. whose heart is after the Lord.

  775. And it says

  776. a very interesting thing.

  777. It says God found favor

  778. on Noah.

  779. Not because Noah

  780. was a great man.

  781. Not because Noah

  782. was doing everything good.

  783. We're told later

  784. that Noah is a pagan.

  785. But for some reason

  786. God finds favor in him

  787. and through mercy

  788. and grace

  789. he comes into Noah's life

  790. and he gives Noah

  791. a plan and a purpose

  792. and he says,

  793. I want you to build an ark

  794. because I'm going to do

  795. something amazing.

  796. And as you build this ark

  797. it's going to be a testimony

  798. to all the people around you.

  799. I mean all the people

  800. around you are against me.

  801. They hate me.

  802. They don't want to have

  803. anything to do with God.

  804. They want to be the God.

  805. But I want you to build

  806. this ark

  807. as a testimony

  808. and an obedience.

  809. And so Noah starts to build

  810. and 120 years later

  811. he finishes it.

  812. 120 years later.

  813. Can you imagine

  814. 120 years of mocking

  815. in the workplace?

  816. I mean some of us

  817. don't want to stay

  818. for six weeks of mocking

  819. in the workplace

  820. or in a family

  821. or in a marriage.

  822. But for 120 years

  823. Noah is faithfully

  824. carrying out

  825. what God's called him to do.

  826. He's suffering.

  827. He's being persecuted.

  828. He's building an ark.

  829. Everybody's hostile to him.

  830. And what verse 4 says

  831. in chapter 4

  832. is that if you

  833. don't run to the people

  834. everyone's going to mock you.

  835. I always thought

  836. that was so interesting to me.

  837. This happened to me

  838. as my junior year in college.

  839. I came out of my room one day

  840. and we just had

  841. this crazy party.

  842. I don't want to say too much

  843. because kids were

  844. but they were just

  845. it was just

  846. it was just

  847. Sodom and Gomorrah

  848. would have loved our party.

  849. There were naked bodies everywhere

  850. and people had vomited

  851. all over the apartment.

  852. My roommate was still drunk

  853. and he's trying to clean up

  854. the vomit

  855. and it was so bad

  856. that instead of

  857. cleaning the vomit up

  858. he just took out

  859. a pair of scissors

  860. and he started cutting holes

  861. around the carpet

  862. and he'd take the carpet

  863. and just throw it out.

  864. And so the next two months

  865. you walk into our house

  866. and there's just holes

  867. all over the carpet.

  868. And I walked out of this

  869. into my room

  870. and I'm like

  871. what am I doing here?

  872. And when am I going to grow up?

  873. When am I going to start living

  874. like the person

  875. God has called me to be?

  876. When am I going to be different?

  877. When am I going to take care

  878. of myself?

  879. And I stopped doing those things.

  880. And you know what?

  881. My friends got angry at me.

  882. They mocked me.

  883. They said I was stupid

  884. for not doing drugs

  885. and drinking

  886. and getting out of control

  887. trying to take care of my body.

  888. They thought that was terrible.

  889. They were angry.

  890. I mean they were angry

  891. because I wanted to walk

  892. with the Lord

  893. and be different.

  894. And the passage says

  895. the same thing happened to Noah

  896. and the same thing

  897. is going to happen to you

  898. and to I.

  899. The ark was this

  900. physical evidence

  901. of Noah's faith to God

  902. and this ark

  903. showed everyone

  904. that Noah was serving

  905. something different.

  906. and every time

  907. people saw the ark

  908. they had to make a choice.

  909. They had to say

  910. am I going to go

  911. this direction

  912. or am I going to go

  913. that direction?

  914. Every time

  915. for 120 years.

  916. And people got angry

  917. at that

  918. and probably Noah

  919. didn't even have to say anything.

  920. and they just saw an ark

  921. and they got angry

  922. at that.

  923. But what we see

  924. in this passage

  925. is that Noah's

  926. what he did today

  927. wasn't just focused

  928. on today

  929. but it was focused

  930. on a future event.

  931. That he wasn't just living

  932. for today

  933. or next week

  934. but his hope

  935. was focused

  936. on a future.

  937. What Peter says

  938. is if we live

  939. like we're supposed to

  940. you and I

  941. are going to look

  942. just like Noah

  943. in our workplace.

  944. You and I

  945. are going to look

  946. just like Noah

  947. on the university campus.

  948. You and I

  949. are going to look

  950. just like Noah

  951. in our marriages

  952. and in our families

  953. and our family reunions.

  954. We're going to look different

  955. and people are going

  956. to be angry

  957. and we're going to suffer.

  958. And the passage

  959. said God uses that

  960. he's going to change you.

  961. He's going to change

  962. the people around you.

  963. So the question

  964. I want to end up with

  965. the question I just

  966. want to ask us

  967. before we finish

  968. this time here is

  969. what does the ark

  970. look like

  971. that you're building

  972. with your life?

  973. If you're a child

  974. of God

  975. and God has come to you

  976. and he's given you

  977. his spirit

  978. and he's asked you

  979. to change

  980. and do stuff

  981. and be different

  982. what is the present

  983. thing that you're

  984. building with your life

  985. that is a focus

  986. on the future hope

  987. of reality?

  988. If people were to look

  989. at your marriage

  990. and your life

  991. and to see how you're

  992. living what does that

  993. ark look like?

  994. What is that hope

  995. pointing towards?

  996. What is it pointing

  997. towards?

  998. The question

  999. that Peter

  1000. asks us

  1001. and the Bible

  1002. asks us

  1003. is if

  1004. it's pointing

  1005. towards something

  1006. besides the ark

  1007. if it's pointing

  1008. towards something

  1009. besides Christ

  1010. is that really

  1011. going to be enough?

  1012. Is that really

  1013. going to be enough

  1014. to save you?

  1015. Is that really

  1016. going to be enough

  1017. when the difficult

  1018. times hit?

  1019. Is that really

  1020. going to be enough

  1021. to sustain you?

  1022. What do our

  1023. present actions

  1024. point to

  1025. as our future hope?

  1026. How?

1027. How do we do this?

1028. How do we get the

  1029. power to do this?

  1030. I love war movies.

  1031. I haven't seen a good

1032. war movie in a long

  1033. time.

1034. The last good war movie

  1035. I saw was

  1036. Saving Private

  1037. was Band of Brothers

  1038. and I watched it

  1039. with Kip

1040. and we talked about it.

  1041. But there's one

  1042. that sticks out

  1043. in my mind

  1044. because there's

  1045. certain scenes

  1046. that I kind of

  1047. burned into my

  1048. head

  1049. and it's

  1050. Saving Private

  1051. Ryan.

  1052. Actually I don't

  1053. watch it very much

  1054. because it's so

  1055. intense.

  1056. Some of the scenes

  1057. are so intense

  1058. I just can't

  1059. handle it.

  1060. I just keep

  1061. thinking about

  1062. my son

  1063. and would I

  1064. have him

  1065. fight in a war?

  1066. I just can't

  1067. handle it.

  1068. But the most

  1069. intense scene

  1070. in Saving Private

  1071. Ryan

  1072. is the first

  1073. scene.

  1074. And it begins

  1075. on a beach

  1076. in Normandy

  1077. in modern day.

  1078. And this little

  1079. old man

  1080. is walking

  1081. up to the

  1082. graveyards

  1083. and his wife

  1084. is behind him

  1085. beside him

  1086. all his grandkids

  1087. and his kids

  1088. behind him.

  1089. And he's

  1090. walking through

  1091. this cemetery

  1092. and he sees

  1093. Star of David

  1094. something else

  1095. a cross

  1096. and he stops

  1097. at the grave

  1098. where the person

  1099. who saved his

  1100. life

  1101. because the story

  1102. is about

  1103. this one guy

  1104. who gets

  1105. parachuted behind

  1106. lines

  1107. he gets lost

  1108. he has

  1109. three brothers

  1110. and all three

  1111. of them die

  1112. and so the military

  1113. says you've got

  1114. to find his kid

  1115. because we're not

  1116. letting four boys

  1117. die on the same

  1118. day.

  1119. So they send

  1120. all these guys

  1121. to save

  1122. Private Ryan

  1123. and in the end

  1124. they all get

  1125. killed.

  1126. And in the last

  1127. scene of the show

  1128. the guy's looking

  1129. at him

  1130. and it's Tom Hanks

  1131. he's about to die

  1132. and he says

  1133. to Matt Damon

  1134. Private Ryan

  1135. he says

  1136. don't waste this

  1137. do something

  1138. incredible

  1139. with your life.

  1140. And I watched

  1141. that first scene

  1142. and he looks

  1143. around and he

  1144. looks at his wife

  1145. and he goes

  1146. was I good?

  1147. Is that worth

  1148. it?

  1149. Did I make

  1150. a difference?

  1151. I mean that

  1152. to me

  1153. that's the whole

  1154. movie right there.

  1155. And you know

  1156. what the passage

  1157. says?

  1158. You and I

  1159. come to a cross

  1160. where it says

  1161. the just

  1162. died for the

  1163. unjust

  1164. so that we

  1165. might go

  1166. to God.

  1167. The passage

  1168. says that

  1169. any other

  1170. arc

  1171. that you're

  1172. building your

  1173. life on

  1174. right now

  1175. success,

  1176. fame,

  1177. relationships,

  1178. marriage,

  1179. kids,

  1180. schools,

  1181. academic,

  1182. whatever that

  1183. arc is

  1184. you're building

  1185. and you're

  1186. saying this

  1187. is going to

  1188. get me

  1189. through the

  1190. flood,

  1191. this is going

  1192. to help

  1193. me through

  1194. life,

  1195. I'm going

  1196. to survive,

  1197. this is going

  1198. to be great.

  1199. The passage

  1200. is saying

  1201. that every

  1202. other arc

  1203. that you're

  1204. building on

  1205. if it's

  1206. not on

  1207. Christ,

  1208. you're

  1209. doomed.

  1210. And

  1211. everybody

  1212. looking at

  1213. your life

  1214. and if

  1215. your kids

  1216. follow that

  1217. same building

  1218. plan,

  1219. they're

  1220. doomed.

  1221. But we

  1222. have an

  1223. arc

  1224. that we

  1225. can cling

  1226. to.

  1227. His name

  1228. is Jesus.

  1229. No matter

  1230. what you're

  1231. suffering,

  1232. no matter

  1233. how difficult

  1234. your life

  1235. is,

  1236. no matter

  1237. what the

  1238. pain and

  1239. the sorrow

  1240. and the

  1241. frustration

  1242. and the

  1243. anger

  1244. and just

  1245. the humiliation

  1246. and the

  1247. stupidness

  1248. you feel,

  1249. no matter

  1250. what that

  1251. is,

  1252. the Bible

  1253. says that

  1254. Christ has

  1255. already

  1256. experienced

  1257. those things,

  1258. he's already

  1259. felt those

  1260. things,

  1261. he's already

  1262. gone through

  1263. those things.

  1264. he's waiting

  1265. to take you

  1266. through those

  1267. things.

  1268. He's the

  1269. only arc

  1270. that can

  1271. save us.

  1272. Which arc

  1273. are you

  1274. trusting in

  1275. today?

  1276. Today?

  1277. How you

  1278. react to

  1279. suffering

  1280. points to

  1281. it.

  1282. If you

  1283. go back

  1284. to your

  1285. old ways

  1286. when suffering

  1287. hits,

  1288. it points

  1289. to it.

  1290. My prayer

  1291. is that

  1292. all of us

  1293. in here

  1294. would consider

  1295. Christ

  1296. and realize

  1297. that he

  1298. is the

  1299. only thing

  1300. that will

  1301. sustain us.

  1302. That's a

  1303. message

  1304. that everyone

  1305. around you

  1306. needs to

  1307. hear.

  1308. And they're

  1309. going to hear

  1310. that message

  1311. and see

  1312. that message

  1313. not just

  1314. by your

  1315. words,

  1316. but by the

  1317. arc that

  1318. you build

  1319. with your

  1320. life.

  1321. You're

  1322. going to

  1323. know what

  1324. you hope

  1325. in and

  1326. what you're

  1327. focused on.

  1328. Okay?

  1329. Father,

  1330. we just

  1331. thank you

  1332. for this

  1333. day.

  1334. We thank

  1335. you for

  1336. your mercy

  1337. and your

  1338. grace.

  1339. We are

  1340. so humbled

  1341. that we

  1342. have a

  1343. God who's

  1344. gone before

  1345. us.

  1346. We have

  1347. a God

  1348. who's

  1349. submitted.

  1350. We have

  1351. a God

  1352. who's

  1353. humbled.

  1354. We have

  1355. a God

  1356. who's

  1357. gone to

  1358. the cross

  1359. so that

  1360. we as

  1361. broken,

  1362. selfish

  1363. people

  1364. might be

  1365. saved.

  1366. Lord,

  1367. I know

  1368. that there's

  1369. some of us

  1370. in here

  1371. right now

  1372. who are

  1373. building

  1374. arcs

  1375. that are

  1376. not of

  1377. you.

  1378. There are

  1379. arcs of

  1380. their career,

  1381. their ability,

  1382. themselves.

  1383. Sometimes we

  1384. just do it

  1385. because that's

  1386. what we saw

  1387. our parents

  1388. do.

  1389. And that's

  1390. what they saw

  1391. their parents

  1392. do.

  1393. Sometimes we

  1394. do it because

  1395. that's what our

  1396. peers do and

  1397. the people that

  1398. we look up to,

  1399. that's what they

  1400. do.

  1401. And so we

  1402. figure if they

  1403. do it,

  1404. it must be

  1405. right.

  1406. But when I

  1407. pray for them,

  1408. I pray for

  1409. them who

  1410. are building

  1411. an ark

  1412. and a hope

  1413. on something

  1414. different,

  1415. that they

  1416. would consider

  1417. the claims

  1418. of Christ,

  1419. they would

  1420. realize that

  1421. they have a

  1422. God who

  1423. came to

  1424. them,

  1425. for them,

  1426. to die

  1427. for them,

  1428. who suffered

  1429. everything

  1430. and was

  1431. exalted to

  1432. the right hand

  1433. of God the

  1434. Father in

  1435. heaven.

  1436. He crumbled

  1437. physically and

  1438. on this

  1439. world so

  1440. that we

  1441. might be

  1442. exalted

  1443. spiritually

  1444. with the

  1445. Father.

  1446. I pray,

  1447. Lord,

  1448. that they

  1449. who are

  1450. building an

  1451. ark on

  1452. something else

  1453. will not

  1454. leave here

  1455. this day or

  1456. this week

  1457. without considering

  1458. what they're

  1459. doing and

  1460. is it true

  1461. and worthy

  1462. and will

  1463. it really

  1464. save them.

  1465. Lord,

  1466. I pray for

  1467. those of us

  1468. who've been

  1469. baptized,

  1470. we've been

  1471. washed with

  1472. your spirit,

  1473. we've been

  1474. cleansed,

  1475. we're being

  1476. changed and

  1477. we're being

  1478. made different

  1479. but sometimes

  1480. we suffer

  1481. because of

  1482. this in

  1483. our workplace

  1484. and in

  1485. our homes

  1486. and wherever

  1487. you have

  1488. us and

  1489. we fear,

  1490. we wonder,

  1491. are you good

  1492. and will you

  1493. take care of

  1494. me tomorrow

  1495. and will you

  1496. take care of

  1497. me next week?

  1498. Yeah,

  1499. I know you're

  1500. going to take

  1501. care of me

  1502. for eternity

  1503. but what about

  1504. next week?

  1505. We fear

  1506. your goodness

  1507. as we look

  1508. at men

  1509. around us

  1510. in their lives

  1511. and I just

  1512. pray for us,

  1513. Lord,

  1514. I pray that we

  1515. would remember

  1516. the lessons

  1517. of Noah

  1518. who continually

  1519. focused on

  1520. you and

  1521. what you've

  1522. already done.

  1523. I pray for us

  1524. as a church,

  1525. I need people

  1526. around me,

  1527. especially when

  1528. suffering happens

  1529. and difficult times

  1530. hit,

  1531. I need people

  1532. who continually

  1533. remind me of

  1534. the hope that

  1535. we cling to.

  1536. I hope that we

  1537. all have people

  1538. who remind us

  1539. and show us

  1540. and help us

  1541. cling to Jesus

  1542. in the difficult

  1543. times and in

  1544. the hard times

  1545. and in times

  1546. of suffering,

  1547. especially as we

  1548. suffer as

  1549. his followers.

  1550. Lord,

  1551. may we be a

  1552. people who

  1553. confess and

  1554. repent and

  1555. turn away from

  1556. our old life

  1557. of debauchery

  1558. and things that

  1559. you've already

  1560. said,

  1561. the time is up,

  1562. it's time for you

  1563. to grow up,

  1564. you've done that

  1565. enough,

  1566. now walk with

  1567. me.

  1568. you've feared

  1569. this person

  1570. and you're in

  1571. awe of what

  1572. they have

  1573. and what they

  1574. can do

  1575. and how they

  1576. do it,

  1577. but that time

  1578. is up now,

  1579. be in awe of

  1580. God.

  1581. Lord,

  1582. help us to be

  1583. in awe of you

  1584. and to walk

  1585. with you as

  1586. your people.

  1587. Lord,

  1588. let's pray for us

  1589. as a church

  1590. that we would

  1591. be a different

  1592. church,

  1593. that in the

  1594. midst of

  1595. suffering in

  1596. Hong Kong

  1597. and the pain

  1598. and the

  1599. brokenness

  1600. that we see,

  1601. that we would

  1602. be able to

  1603. speak a message

  1604. that's different

  1605. than all the

  1606. other messages.

  1607. It's not a

  1608. message of

  1609. education

  1610. or structure

  1611. or new

  1612. governments,

  1613. but it's a

  1614. message of

  1615. your son,

  1616. Jesus,

  1617. who's come

  1618. to heal

  1619. our brokenness

  1620. and to fix

  1621. all those

  1622. broken things.

  1623. May we lean

  1624. on him

  1625. and trust

  1626. him and

  1627. point people

  1628. around us

  1629. to him

  1630. because we're

  1631. not just

  1632. building an

  1633. ark for

  1634. today or

  1635. tomorrow,

  1636. but we're

  1637. building an

  1638. ark for

  1639. eternity

  1640. and it has

  1641. to be able

  1642. to get us

  1643. there.

  1644. Lord,

  1645. we love

  1646. you and

  1647. we desperately,

  1648. desperately need

  1649. you.

  1650. We pray these

  1651. things in your

  1652. son,

  1653. Jesus'

  1654. holy name.

  1655. Amen.

  1656. Amen.

  1657. Amen.

  1658. Amen.

  1659. Amen.

  1660. Amen.

  1661. Amen.

  1662. Amen.

  1663. Amen.

  1664. Amen.

  1665. Amen.

  1666. Amen.

  1667. Amen.

  1668. Amen.

  1669. Amen.

  1670. Amen.

  1671. Amen.

  1672. Amen.

  1673. Amen.

  1674. Amen.

  1675. Amen.

  1676. Amen.

  1677. Amen.
