  1. Lord, as we wrap up one year,

  2. we just thank you for your faithfulness

  3. that you've made manifest to us

  4. this past year.

  5. And as we look to a new year, Lord,

  6. we ask that you would

  7. become even more precious

  8. in our eyes and in our hearts.

  9. We want to know you more.

  10. And so, Lord, we ask that you speak to us

  11. through your word today.

  12. Lord, I'm asking that you would,

  13. by the power of your Holy Spirit,

  14. speak through me to all of us.

  15. Lord, I need your help.

  16. Lord, I'm not adequate on my own

  17. to speak the words you would have me

  18. speak from your word.

  19. So I'm asking you for your help.

  20. Lord, for our good, for the glory of your name,

  21. Lord, speak through me today.

  22. Lord, we look to you in Jesus' name.

  23. Amen.

  24. Please be seated.

  25. If you'd like to follow along,

  26. we have Bibles here at the front.

  27. You can grab and borrow for today

  28. or take home if you need a copy of the Bible.

  29. Please turn with me to Psalm 46.

  30. As you do so,

  31. I want to tell you about

  32. Tuesday, January 12, 2010.

  33. I received a phone call from Diane Scharf,

  34. many of you know from this congregation,

  35. a good friend of mine.

  36. She called and asked how my sister Sarah was doing.

  37. And I assured her she was doing really well.

  38. She had just had a good holiday with us

  39. at the Christmas season.

  40. And she said,

  41. no, something about an earthquake in Haiti.

  42. And I assured her that

  43. I didn't know what she was talking about,

  44. but if I heard anything,

  45. I'd let her know and thanked her for calling

  46. and hung up the phone.

  47. Then I went over to the internet

  48. and Googled Haiti earthquake.

  49. And to my horror,

  50. I saw the first images of that earthquake

  51. many of us will remember

  52. following along in the news.

  53. Well, for the next few hours,

  54. few agonizing hours,

  55. my family kept going to her Facebook

  56. and checking online

  57. to see if there's anything

  58. that would let us know

  59. that my sister Sarah was okay.

  60. Eventually, we found out

  61. that she was alive

  62. and she was okay.

  63. But okay is a relative term.

  64. For all, like my sister,

  65. and all in Haiti,

  66. the time of the earthquake

  67. was absolutely horrifying.

  68. For those who lived like my sister,

  69. they all had friends or family

  70. who had perished

  71. as the country crumbled.

  72. My sister had gone down

  73. to teach school

  74. at a mission base.

  75. And when she'd gone down

  76. months before,

  77. Haiti was already

  78. in a state of tragedy

  79. as the country is so poor

  80. and so broken.

  81. So when the earthquake came

  82. and the few foundations

  83. they did have crumbled,

  84. it was just absolutely horrifying.

  85. I remember clicking refresh

  86. every few minutes

  87. to see if there's any news updates

  88. and the death toll numbers

  89. were just skyrocketing.

  90. It was horrifying.

  91. And although my sister was okay,

  92. it was really traumatizing

  93. for her and for everyone

  94. who lived through that time.

  95. It was so painful.

  96. And I didn't fully realize

  97. how it affected me

  98. until the next New Year

  99. because New Year's

  100. is a really precious time

  101. in my family.

  102. We often get together,

  103. friends come over

  104. and we play ice hockey

  105. on the outdoor rink

  106. and we watch some

  107. family-friendly films.

  108. We have a beautiful time

  109. of worship and prayer

  110. dedicating the New Year

  111. to the Lord.

  112. And 2010 was especially

  113. a year that I was

  114. looking forward to.

  115. I was really confident

  116. about a number of things

  117. that were going to come.

  118. And so the fact that

  119. the earthquake came

  120. on January 12th

  121. just after this New Year

  122. that was supposed to be

  123. so precious to me

  124. had got underway

  125. and just out of nowhere,

  126. bam!

  127. This earthquake

  128. shook everything.

  129. And although it was

  130. so far away in Haiti,

  131. it was so close at home

  132. that it affected my sister.

  133. And so as the next New Year

  134. was coming up,

  135. I found myself looking forward

  136. to the future

  137. with this fear.

  138. When is the next book

  139. going to fall on our heads?

  140. And I share the story

  141. not because I necessarily

  142. think you care about

  143. my New Year's experiences,

  144. but because I think

  145. it's very common

  146. for all of us

  147. who, if you've lived

  148. a few minutes

  149. on this earth,

  150. then you've probably

  151. experienced the reality

  152. of pain and suffering

  153. that can be part

  154. of the human condition.

  155. And so it can be

  156. a very normal human feeling

  157. to look to the future

  158. with a sense of dread.

  159. What's in store?

  160. And so,

  161. as George asked me

  162. to pray,

  163. to preach today

  164. and I was praying

  165. for the church

  166. and what God would have

  167. for us in the New Year,

  168. God really put on my heart

  169. to go through a passage

  170. that would show us

  171. a biblical way

  172. to view the future,

  173. a biblical way

  174. to see the New Year.

  175. And so,

  176. as we turn to Psalm 46,

  177. and I won't read it all

  178. because Nora

  179. had just read it

  180. in her powerful,

  181. powerful scripture

  182. reading voice.

  183. Let's look at it.

  184. The mountains

  185. are often seen

  186. as the things

  187. that do not move,

  188. those things in our lives

  189. that we can count on

  190. in every situation,

  191. whereas the sea

  192. and the oceans

  193. are seen as those things

  194. that are in flux

  195. and changing

  196. and it's the great unknown.

  197. And in the passage

  198. that Nora just read,

  199. Psalm 46,

  200. we see the mountains

  201. giving way

  202. and falling to the heart

  203. of the sea.

  204. It's those things

  205. that should be firm,

  206. it should not move,

  207. are just crumbling

  208. and those things

  209. that are in flux

  210. and changing

  211. are just swelling up.

  212. And yet we see

  213. the psalmist saying

  214. in Psalm 46

  215. that though that may be

  216. the case

  217. and though that may be

  218. in the future,

  219. we don't need to fear.

  220. God is a refuge

  221. and strength,

  222. a very present help

  223. in trouble.

  224. Therefore,

  225. we will not fear

  226. though the earth

  227. gives way,

  228. though the mountains

  229. be moved

  230. into the heart

  231. of the sea,

  232. though its waters

  233. roar and foam,

  234. though the mountains

  235. tremble at its swelling.

  236. One of the beautiful things

  237. that first springs up

  238. from this passage

  239. is that the Bible

  240. is very real

  241. about the reality

  242. of suffering

  243. and pain

  244. in our lives.

  245. The Bible

  246. doesn't pretend

  247. about it,

  248. it's real

  249. about the reality

  250. of pain

  251. and suffering

  252. in our lives.

  253. Now this is really

  254. special and unique

  255. because there's a lot

  256. of philosophies

  257. and spiritualities

  258. on this planet

  259. that try to deal

  260. with pain and suffering

  261. by ignoring them.

  262. There's a lot

  263. of Eastern philosophies

  264. and spiritualities

  265. such as Buddhism

  266. where the way

  267. that you deal

  268. with the reality

  269. of pain and suffering

  270. with earthquakes

  271. in our lives,

  272. it's just a matter

  273. of separating yourself

  274. from it,

  275. just meditating

  276. and it's all

  277. in your mind

  278. and you're going

  279. to connect somehow

  280. with something

  281. that's more real

  282. than a pain.

  283. The Bible doesn't say

  284. that the pain

  285. isn't real,

  286. the Bible treats

  287. pain as real.

  288. And it's not only

  289. the Eastern philosophies

  290. that you might encounter

  291. a way of looking

  292. at life that tries

  293. to separate itself

  294. from pain.

  295. I've done a number

  296. of initiatives

  297. and work

  298. in fighting human

  299. trafficking

  300. and sexual abuse.

  301. One of the first,

  302. the great hindrances

  303. to people finding healing

  304. is that when a child

  305. or someone of any age

  306. really comes to their family,

  307. their parents,

  308. their teachers

  309. and tells them

  310. that they're getting

  311. sexually abused,

  312. it's a very normal response

  313. for people to say,

  314. oh, it's just a game

  315. or to downplay it

  316. in some way

  317. that we don't want

  318. to deal with reality

  319. of pain and suffering.

  320. It's too painful,

  321. especially if the abuser

  322. is someone close to home.

  323. It's too painful

  324. to think that

  325. that might be the case

  326. and so people try

  327. to act as if

  328. it's not really happening.

  329. And the tragedy

  330. of that is that

  331. you're not going

  332. to find healing

  333. unless if you deal

  334. with the real situation,

  335. if you deal with the pain.

  336. And we see in Psalm 46

  337. that the psalmist

  338. does not beat around

  339. the bush,

  340. it speaks that

  341. though there may be times

  342. where the mountains

  343. fall into the heart

  344. of the sea,

  345. we don't need to fear.

  346. So just as the Bible

  347. is real about pain

  348. and suffering,

  349. the Bible is real

  350. about our refuge.

  351. A refuge is a place

  352. you go for shelter

  353. and protection

  354. when there is

  355. some type of enemy

  356. or difficulty,

  357. danger coming.

  358. So for example,

  359. if you are in the Midwest

  360. and a tornado is coming

  361. to your house

  362. and you run to the cellar,

  363. that cellar,

  364. your cellar,

  365. becomes your refuge.

  366. Or if there's an earthquake

  367. and it's not as big

  368. as the one in Haiti,

  369. you can run to the doorposts

  370. of your house,

  371. the door frames,

  372. and there you'll find refuge

  373. as everything shakes

  374. but the doorposts

  375. should remain intact.

  376. Or at the time

  377. that these ancient words

  378. in Psalm 46 were written,

  379. it was very normal

  380. for farmers.

  381. A lot of the people

  382. like us,

  383. the commoners,

  384. would have farms

  385. outside a walled city

  386. or near a castle

  387. and if the enemy soldiers

  388. were coming,

  389. all of us farmers

  390. would run into this walled city,

  391. this fortress,

  392. and that would be a refuge

  393. and it would protect us.

  394. Similarly,

  395. if you yourself

  396. was a soldier

  397. and you went off

  398. to a battle

  399. and you got injured,

  400. you'd come back

  401. to a place of refuge,

  402. of protection,

  403. to find healing,

  404. to find healing.

  405. And so the scriptures

  406. tell us that

  407. just as pain and suffering

  408. might be in store for us

  409. and in some ways

  410. it is in store for all of us

  411. in different ways,

  412. we can find refuge in God.

  413. Now another beautiful thing

  414. in this passage

  415. is it doesn't speak about

  416. God being a refuge,

  417. it's just God being a refuge

  418. or God being the refuge

  419. but God being our refuge.

  420. God is our refuge.

  421. Just a few months ago

  422. I was speaking,

  423. a workshop,

  424. I was asked to speak

  425. on human trafficking

  426. and the gospel

  427. and so it was a two hour talk

  428. and so I shared

  429. for the first little bit

  430. about the reality

  431. of human trafficking

  432. and sexual abuse

  433. in Canada

  434. and we looked a bit

  435. at ways that people

  436. can get involved

  437. bringing rescue

  438. and restoration

  439. and then for the most part

  440. of the two hours

  441. we just looked at

  442. different testimonies

  443. of individuals

  444. who found healing

  445. and rescue

  446. and restoration

  447. in God

  448. as people who were

  449. so crushed

  450. by the abuse

  451. were able to be

  452. just restored

  453. and come alive

  454. once again

  455. through the power

  456. of the gospel.

  457. I promised not to talk

  458. for two hours today

  459. but it was a long

  460. two hour talk

  461. at the time

  462. and afterward

  463. a girl came up

  464. to me

  465. a teenager

  466. came up

  467. to me

  468. and she said

  469. do you really

  470. believe that God

  471. can bring me healing?

  472. I could have responded

  473. and said

  474. well for sure

  475. did you not just hear

  476. the past two hours?

  477. Weren't you listening?

  478. You could have taken notes?

  479. The whole thing

  480. was about God

  481. being the healer

  482. God being a refuge

  483. but she had heard

  484. that God was a refuge

  485. and she had heard

  486. that God was the refuge

  487. she had heard

  488. that God was their refuge

  489. she needed to know

  490. could God be my refuge?

  491. and so I want us

  492. to pause for a moment

  493. today and let that

  494. sink in

  495. that God is not

  496. just our refuge

  497. he's not just

  498. the refuge

  499. he is our refuge

  500. and all that that means

  501. it's so important

  502. because

  503. if God is our refuge

  504. it means that we can

  505. stop trying to be

  506. our own refuge

  507. we can stop trying

  508. to be our own refuge

  509. this is so important

  510. for so many different

  511. parts of life

  512. I'm told

  513. I don't have any

  514. experience of this myself

  515. but I'm told

  516. that one of the great

  517. challenges of marriage

  518. is that

  519. when communication

  520. breaks down

  521. and one of the ways

  522. that communication

  523. breaks down

  524. is when someone

  525. is not able to be

  526. vulnerable with the other person

  527. and I know for sure

  528. this is true in friendships

  529. that if you're trying

  530. to protect yourself

  531. from being vulnerable

  532. in any type of friendship

  533. you're not going to be able

  534. to really communicate

  535. you're not going to be able

  536. to have the real intimacy

  537. that friendship is made for

  538. and as long as

  539. you're not trusting God

  540. to be your refuge

  541. you're going to be

  542. your own refuge

  543. you're going to try

  544. to protect yourself

  545. you're not going to allow

  546. people to truly know you

  547. Jesus addresses this

  548. in Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  549. where he says

  550. that if anyone

  551. would seek to save his life

  552. he'll lose it

  553. but whoever will lose

  554. his life for Jesus' sake

  555. will find it

  556. as long as we're trying

  557. to be our own refuge

  558. it's going to affect

  559. the way that we spend

  560. our money

  561. we're always going to be

  562. looking out for number one

  563. as long as we're trying

  564. to be our own refuge

  565. we're not going to be able

  566. to communicate with people

  567. in a healthy way

  568. as long as we're trying

  569. to be our own refuge

  570. we're not going to live

  571. the beautiful

  572. dangerous

  573. risky

  574. God glorifying life

  575. that he made us for

  576. because we're going to be

  577. trying to always be

  578. looking out for ourselves

  579. but Jesus says

  580. there's a lot at stake

  581. in making God

  582. your refuge

  583. because if you don't do it

  584. you're going to lose

  585. your life

  586. Jim Elliot

  587. a martyr

  588. just in the past century

  589. said he is no fool

  590. who gives what he cannot keep

  591. to gain what he cannot lose

  592. we are no fool

  593. if we make God

  594. our refuge

  595. because he is the only

  596. refuge that can really

  597. protect us

  598. that can give us

  599. any true reason

  600. for confidence

  601. when we look at

  602. the reality of the human condition

  603. and see the reality

  604. of suffering and pain

  605. that awaits us

  606. if we make God

  607. our refuge

  608. it's not going to make

  609. those things

  610. not happen

  611. but it's going to give us

  612. every reason for confidence

  613. that we can go into the future

  614. trusting God

  615. not to make the earthquakes

  616. not happen

  617. but to sustain us

  618. and keep us in himself

  619. through it all

  620. God is our refuge

  621. now there's so much

  622. to God being a refuge

  623. I was quite tempted

  624. to just keep it at that

  625. and just continue to mind

  626. the depths of God

  627. being a refuge

  628. and all that's at stake

  629. and all that we have

  630. to gain through learning

  631. of God as a refuge

  632. as I prayed about that

  633. I think God reminded me

  634. of the first time

  635. I played laser tag

  636. the first time I played

  637. laser tag

  638. was just a few years ago

  639. and I had the gun

  640. in my hand

  641. I had the vest on

  642. and they were counting us down

  643. we were about to head out

  644. I'm standing there

  645. I'm just like

  646. I want to win

  647. I was committed to winning

  648. and so the doors open

  649. and I run in

  650. and I found a little place

  651. to hide

  652. and I just stayed there

  653. and everyone was running

  654. and laser tagging each other

  655. and no one was laser tagging me

  656. I was safe

  657. and I was confident

  658. that I had this

  659. the game ended

  660. and I went out with everyone

  661. to see on the little TV screen

  662. that I'd won

  663. and I looked

  664. I think my name was probably

  665. Aragorn or something

  666. and I looked up

  667. and I looked at the first few names

  668. and no Aragorn

  669. I looked down

  670. I finally looked at the bottom

  671. there was my name

  672. Aragorn

  673. what?

  674. I never got hit basically

  675. and the reason

  676. that I lost

  677. is that laser tag

  678. is a lot like life

  679. laser tag is a lot like

  680. the call that we were made

  681. for as human beings

  682. by God

  683. which is that

  684. we're not only called

  685. to have a refuge

  686. we're actually called

  687. to go out

  688. we're called to fight

  689. we're called to go tag

  690. and what's interesting

  691. as I was praying about this

  692. I thought

  693. okay maybe there's more

  694. to just being a refuge

  695. than the psalm

  696. than just the refuge part

  697. the psalm

  698. is not just a

  699. one stanza song

  700. it was written as a song

  701. written as a three stanza song

  702. so whereas the first

  703. stanza of the song

  704. speaks about

  705. the mountains may fall

  706. and the oceans may rise

  707. but God will be a refuge

  708. then the second speaks

  709. to what the next little bit

  710. of the first line says

  711. that God is a refuge

  712. and strength

  713. that God is not only

  714. a refuge for us

  715. but he's our strength

  716. and if refuge is something

  717. that is an external

  718. protection to us

  719. strength is this

  720. inner dynamic force

  721. within us

  722. that enables

  723. and empowers

  724. and equips us

  725. to live the life

  726. he's called us to live

  727. see

  728. in the second stanza

  729. it speaks first

  730. of a city

  731. and it speaks

  732. of a river

  733. it says

  734. there's a river

  735. whose streams

  736. make glad

  737. the city of God

  738. the holy habitation

  739. of the most high

  740. God is in the midst

  741. of her

  742. she shall not be moved

  743. God will help her

  744. when morning dawns

  745. and then it turns

  746. our attention to wars

  747. the nations rage

  748. the kingdoms totter

  749. he utters his voice

  750. as God utters his voice

  751. the earth melts

  752. and it continues

  753. into the next stanza

  754. speaking of wars

  755. and how God brings peace

  756. now the first thing

  757. to note about the city

  758. is that

  759. if it's speaking about

  760. the city of God

  761. we think Jerusalem

  762. but unlike most

  763. of the cities

  764. at the time

  765. the big cities

  766. the important cities

  767. that had rivers

  768. going through them

  769. Jerusalem as far as

  770. I understand

  771. at that time at least

  772. and I think still today

  773. does not have a river

  774. going through it

  775. but this river

  776. is a river

  777. whose streams

  778. make glad

  779. the city of our God

  780. and the scriptures

  781. elsewhere speak

  782. of the river

  783. of streams

  784. of living water

  785. coming from God

  786. and how God

  787. it's this image

  788. of bringing

  789. the nutrients

  790. we need for life

  791. it makes analogies

  792. to us being like

  793. a tree

  794. by the streams

  795. of water

  796. and how God

  797. enables us

  798. to bear the fruit

  799. and live the life

  800. he's called us to

  801. there's a strengthening

  802. that we receive

  803. from God

  804. as a river

  805. so either speaking

  806. of Jerusalem

  807. at the time

  808. and how God

  809. is in the midst

  810. of bringing life

  811. not as an actual

  812. H2O water

  813. but by the power

  814. of his Holy Spirit

  815. or it's looking forward

  816. to the future time

  817. in the new Jerusalem

  818. where God

  819. will be as a river

  820. to us

  821. either way

  822. for me at least

  823. I'm honest

  824. I'm just an intern

  825. at this church

  826. I don't actually know

  827. all that it's talking

  828. about the city of God

  829. but what I do know

  830. with confidence

  831. is that it's true

  832. that God is the one

  833. who brings us

  834. that life

  835. that just like water

  836. brings trees life

  837. so God is a river

  838. to us

  839. and it's in contrast

  840. to the swelling

  841. of the oceans

  842. but God is a river

  843. to us

  844. that brings life

  845. and then as it turns

  846. our attention

  847. to the wars on earth

  848. and the reality

  849. of the pain

  850. and suffering

  851. and the fighting

  852. and the human condition

  853. we see that God

  854. is bringing peace

  855. but God brings peace

  856. not in this passive way

  857. of just some type

  858. of passive thing

  859. but rather you see

  860. God's going out

  861. and he burns the chariots

  862. and he speaks

  863. and he's this act

  864. of moving forward

  865. and see the reason

  866. for human suffering

  867. the reason that there's wars

  868. and all those things

  869. is because

  870. at the dawn of time

  871. human beings

  872. we turned away from God

  873. and we still do this today

  874. every time we see war

  875. all these things

  876. just pain and suffering

  877. we're seeing human beings

  878. turn us

  879. turn away from God

  880. saying we're not going

  881. to honor you as king

  882. we're going to do our own thing

  883. and that's why

  884. there's all this suffering

  885. but since the dawn of time

  886. God promised

  887. to bring us a rescue

  888. and God has been working

  889. his grand scheme

  890. through Jesus

  891. of bringing rescue

  892. and restoration

  893. to the universe

  894. as he reconciles humanity

  895. to himself

  896. through Jesus Christ

  897. and if we're followers of God

  898. if we're children of God

  899. then we're joining him

  900. in that rescue mission

  901. and so my heart for us

  902. as we head into a new year

  903. is that we would

  904. evermore embrace

  905. this call of God

  906. that we don't only look

  907. to God as a refuge

  908. but we look to him

  909. as one who gives the strength

  910. to go out

  911. and to live

  912. the adventure

  913. the life that he's called us

  914. to live

  915. reoccurring in the psalm

  916. is the words

  917. the Lord of hosts

  918. is with us

  919. it means the God of armies

  920. is with us

  921. so the word host

  922. means armies

  923. God's call is to join him

  924. in his army

  925. as he brings peace

  926. and reconciliation

  927. to the universe

  928. later on in the service

  929. we're going to be

  930. having communion

  931. and so often

  932. communion for us

  933. is simply about

  934. the refuge

  935. that God provides

  936. as we eat the bread

  937. and drink the wine

  938. we remember that

  939. Jesus in his own body

  940. bore the punishment

  941. that we deserve

  942. all of us

  943. the ultimate earthquake

  944. the ultimate calamity

  945. of the human condition

  946. is the just punishment

  947. we should receive

  948. from God

  949. but as we remember

  950. in communion

  951. Jesus bore that punishment

  952. for us

  953. he took it upon himself

  954. and so as we eat the bread

  955. and drink the wine

  956. we remember Jesus

  957. bearing the punishment

  958. that we deserve

  959. so that we don't have

  960. to face that punishment

  961. and for a lot of us

  962. that's where it ends

  963. but Leviticus 17

  964. speaks about the life

  965. being in the blood

  966. and as we drink the wine

  967. today and in the future

  968. let us remember

  969. not only is Jesus

  970. the ultimate refuge for us

  971. but as we drink the wine

  972. let us remember

  973. that Jesus

  974. gives us his own strength

  975. his own blood

  976. his own life

  977. let us remember

  978. not only the death

  979. of Jesus

  980. but the resurrection

  981. and how he's called

  982. to share in that

  983. resurrection life

  984. and to go and live

  985. and sharing in that

  986. resurrection life

  987. from Jesus

  988. does not mean

  989. that we're going to be

  990. not mean we're going

  991. to avoid earthquakes

  992. in life

  993. but again

  994. it means we can share

  995. in the refuge

  996. that is God

  997. and the strength

  998. that he gives us

  999. now as I thought

  1000. about how to make

  1001. this practical

  1002. I thought

  1003. well we can

  1004. look at prayer

  1005. and how

1006. prayer is one of the ways

1007. that we go to God

1008. to find refuge in him

  1009. I know everyone

  1010. who is God's child

  1011. in this room

  1012. has testimonies

  1013. of that time

  1014. that your back

1015. is up against the wall

1016. but you went to God

  1017. in prayer

  1018. and he came through

  1019. for you

  1020. like 2 Chronicles 20

  1021. where King Jehoshaphat

  1022. says Lord

  1023. we do not know

  1024. what to do

  1025. but our eyes

  1026. are on you

  1027. and God comes

  1028. through for him

  1029. or we can look

  1030. at worship

  1031. we've all had

  1032. those times

  1033. where our soul

  1034. is being crushed

  1035. and yet we

  1036. remind ourselves

  1037. remind God

  1038. of who he is

  1039. like the psalmuses

  1040. in Psalm 73

  1041. as his soul

  1042. is being crushed

1043. and then he worships God

1044. he enters into his presence

  1045. and he finds

  1046. such a life

  1047. and renewal in him

  1048. or we can look

  1049. at how the word

  1050. helps us find strength

  1051. and refuge in God

  1052. think of Jesus

  1053. in Luke 4

  1054. how he's getting

  1055. so tempted

  1056. and he's so weak

  1057. and tired

  1058. and hungry

  1059. he's fasting

  1060. and he quotes

  1061. the scripture

  1062. and he finds refuge

  1063. and strength

  1064. and he's able

  1065. to overcome

  1066. the temptation

  1067. or King Josiah

  1068. in 2 Kings 22

  1069. where he's living

  1070. his life

  1071. and also

  1072. they come across

  1073. the Torah

  1074. and they come across

  1075. the books of Moses

  1076. right in the temple

  1077. and it changes

  1078. the course

  1079. of the lives

  1080. it strengthens them

  1081. to live

  1082. the holy life

  1083. God's called them

  1084. to do

  1085. and to do all

  1086. that he's called

  1087. them to do

  1088. and be

  1089. or we can talk

  1090. about obedience

1091. I mean the whole book

  1092. of Proverbs

  1093. is basically

  1094. filled with this message

1095. that if we fear God

1096. and seek to obey him

  1097. there's such refuge

  1098. and shelter

  1099. and life in that

  1100. there's such strength

  1101. in that

  1102. that if we

  1103. actually seek

  1104. to live the way

  1105. God's called us

  1106. to live

  1107. according to his wisdom

  1108. and his ways

  1109. applying the word

  1110. of God

  1111. to our lives

  1112. then we'll be

  1113. just like Jesus said

  1114. like the person

  1115. who built their house

  1116. on the rock

  1117. that when the winds

  1118. come and the rains

  1119. come and the floods

  1120. come we're going

1121. to be able to stay

  1122. steadfast in the Lord

  1123. there's such a life

  1124. strength and refuge

  1125. as we seek

  1126. to obey God

  1127. and so I thought

1128. if we had the time

  1129. to delve into

  1130. all those different ones

1131. but as I came back

  1132. to this passage

  1133. I saw that it doesn't

  1134. at the beginning

  1135. and throughout it say

  1136. prayer is our refuge

1137. or worship is our refuge

  1138. or even obedience

1139. as important as that is

  1140. is our refuge

  1141. no it says God

  1142. is our refuge

  1143. and strength

  1144. and the reality

  1145. that the psalm

  1146. is pointing us to

  1147. is so much more

  1148. precious and intimate

  1149. than simply looking

  1150. at prayer and worship

  1151. those things are important

  1152. see prayer and worship

  1153. and obedience

  1154. the scriptures

  1155. those are all facets

1156. of getting to know God

  1157. look at verse 10

1158. in the midst of it

  1159. speaking about God

  1160. being a refuge

  1161. and strength

  1162. and how God

  1163. is bringing peace

  1164. to the world

  1165. as he crushes

  1166. the bows

  1167. and the chariots

  1168. in verse 10

  1169. it says

  1170. be still

  1171. and know

  1172. that I am God

  1173. be still

  1174. and know

  1175. that I am God

  1176. these ancient words

  1177. are so fresh

  1178. and so alive today

  1179. because all of us

  1180. live in a world

  1181. where relativism

  1182. is so dominant

  1183. I mean

  1184. we all have friends

  1185. who will be like

  1186. I'm glad that you're a Christian

  1187. Christianity works for you

  1188. but I'm an agnostic

1189. because that works for you

  1190. this works for me

  1191. it's all good

1192. and the idea is that

  1193. religion and spirituality

  1194. and truth

1195. is just like a flavor

1196. we all have our preferences

1197. and whatever works for you

  1198. works for you

  1199. but what's undergirding

  1200. this whole philosophy

  1201. this way of life

  1202. that even some Christians

  1203. partake in

  1204. is the idea that

  1205. it's impossible

  1206. to really know anything

  1207. it's impossible

  1208. to be certain

  1209. of anything

1210. but what we see right here

  1211. is a command

  1212. to be still

  1213. and to know

  1214. God

  1215. a few years ago

1216. I was on the Greyhound bus

  1217. chatting with a guy

  1218. my age

1219. it was a long bus ride

1220. so we had a long conversation

1221. all the way from Windsor to Ottawa

1222. and he was an agnostic

1223. and really a guy of the times today

1224. telling me how it's impossible

  1225. to know anything

1226. and I interrupted him gently

  1227. and said

1228. hey I actually know God exists

  1229. I know God

1230. I said how can you be certain

1231. how can you know God

1232. and so I shared with him

  1233. the rational logical reasons

1234. for why I believe in God

  1235. I shared with him

  1236. the argument from design

1237. how if you look at a

  1238. at a clock

  1239. or a watch

1240. or for the younger people

  1241. who don't know a watch

  1242. their cell phone

1243. if you look at a cell phone

  1244. you'll see it intricately

  1245. put together

  1246. and you'll think

  1247. for sure there's a designer

  1248. someone who made this

1249. the universe is so much

  1250. more intricate

  1251. even our own bodies

1252. are so much more intricate

  1253. than a watch

  1254. or a cell phone

  1255. clearly there's a designer

1256. he said sure I'm with you

1257. sure I'll agree with you

  1258. it's logical to believe

  1259. that there's a supreme being

  1260. who created the universe

  1261. how that works

  1262. I have no idea

  1263. I said yeah

  1264. we'd have no idea

  1265. except if there was

  1266. some reliable text

1267. that would speak to us

  1268. about this

  1269. something that actually knows

  1270. he said sure

  1271. but there's so many

  1272. different holy books

  1273. out there

  1274. how can you know

  1275. which one's real

  1276. or I said

1277. well let's test them out

  1278. we can talk about

  1279. the claims of many

  1280. different ones

1281. but if you find the one

  1282. that's true

  1283. that you can trust

  1284. there you go

  1285. he said well

1286. how would you ever find that

1287. well it was a long bus ride

1288. longer than we have time

  1289. for today

  1290. but we looked at

  1291. so many different prophecies

  1292. in the scripture

  1293. all these prophecies

  1294. of these words

  1295. we know we're in

1296. long before Jesus ever came

1297. and then from what we know

  1298. of history

  1299. about Jesus

1300. we see that it's true

  1301. the prophecies about

  1302. where the Messiah

1303. was going to be born

1304. is where Jesus was born

  1305. the description

1306. of how Jesus would live

  1307. is how Jesus lived

  1308. and about his death

  1309. and his resurrection

  1310. all these different things

1311. and I mean that would be

  1312. a cool coincidence

  1313. if it was one

  1314. or a few prophecies

  1315. but we're talking

  1316. prophecy after prophecy

  1317. after prophecy

1318. and not only are there

  1319. prophecies in the scriptures

  1320. about Jesus

  1321. but there's other prophecies

  1322. about Cyrus

1323. before the guy ever came

1324. before he was even born

  1325. prophecies about Cyrus

  1326. and how he would

  1327. restore Jerusalem

1328. and then there was a king

  1329. history tells us

  1330. Cyrus

  1331. who restored Jerusalem

  1332. so many prophecies

  1333. in the Bible

  1334. and eventually

  1335. the Bible goes

  1336. from simply being

  1337. an interesting book

1338. to all of a sudden

  1339. being something

  1340. that it's logical

  1341. and rational to trust

1342. in fact it would be

  1343. a fool to ignore

1344. and he was kind of

  1345. tracking with me

1346. for a lot of that

1347. and I said to him

1348. all of those would be

  1349. reasons for why

  1350. I would claim

  1351. to know God exists

1352. but I'm going to go

  1353. one step further

  1354. I don't just know

  1355. that God exists

1356. and that it's the God

  1357. of the Bible

  1358. I know him

1359. I said what do you mean

  1360. well there's two kinds

  1361. of knowing

  1362. there's a type

  1363. of knowing

  1364. that is knowing

  1365. about

  1366. say for example

  1367. you have children

  1368. who were orphans

  1369. and they hear

  1370. that there's a great king

  1371. a benevolent king

1372. who's going to adopt them

  1373. they're so excited

1374. to meet their new father

  1375. and kings make edicts

  1376. kings make laws

  1377. they do stuff

1378. so it shouldn't be too hard

  1379. to find those edicts

  1380. and laws

1381. so they start searching it out

  1382. and sure enough

  1383. they find edicts

1384. and laws made by this king

1385. and so they meet together

  1386. weekly

  1387. let's say Sundays

  1388. they meet together

  1389. they read these laws

1390. these edicts by the king

1391. and they're getting to know

  1392. more about their king

  1393. their father

  1394. and then the father

  1395. even writes letters

  1396. to them

  1397. they're so happy

1398. they got letters from them

1399. so they read these letters

  1400. now they can spend

1401. as much time as they want

  1402. reading those letters

1403. and looking at those laws

  1404. but they'll never

1405. ever be able to claim

1406. that they know their father

  1407. until their father comes

1408. and they're in his presence

  1409. and they meet him

  1410. and now they know

  1411. their father

  1412. I said

  1413. so often

  1414. as Christians

  1415. we settle for

  1416. knowing about God

  1417. and that's my

  1418. one concern

  1419. with just talking about

  1420. prayer and worship

  1421. and reading the scriptures

  1422. and even obedience

1423. is that for a lot of us

1424. we can know a lot about God

1425. and go through these things

  1426. that are so important

  1427. for living the life

1428. we were called to live

1429. and an obedient life to God

  1430. but all those things

  1431. are only getting at

  1432. knowing God

1433. George a few weeks ago

  1434. spoke from Revelation 3

  1435. about Jesus

  1436. who says

1437. he stands at the door

  1438. and knocks

1439. and how by God's grace

  1440. by his power

1441. we can open up our heart

  1442. and receive him

  1443. how we can actually

  1444. get to know him

  1445. there's such comfort

  1446. in Psalm 46

1447. about God being a refuge

  1448. and strength

  1449. such promise of confidence

  1450. in him

1451. and the life we can live

  1452. but that's only true

  1453. if God is actually

  1454. your refuge

  1455. and God is only

  1456. your refuge

1457. if you actually know him

  1458. and he knows you

1459. not just that you know

  1460. about God

1461. not just that you speak

  1462. the liturgy each week

  1463. but that you actually

  1464. know him

  1465. the words

  1466. be still

1467. and know that I am God

  1468. are not an invitation

  1469. they're a command

  1470. they're not an invitation

  1471. they're an ultimatum

  1472. the scriptures say

  1473. right here

  1474. be still

1475. and know that I am God

  1476. I will be exalted

  1477. among the nations

  1478. I will be exalted

  1479. in the earth

  1480. we see this

1481. this feature of the psalm

1482. not just at the end

1483. but throughout the whole thing

  1484. it keeps speaking

1485. about the presence of God

  1486. it says repeatedly

  1487. the Lord of hosts

  1488. is with us

  1489. the Lord of hosts

  1490. isn't just alive

  1491. he's with us

  1492. it says about God

  1493. being in the midst

  1494. of the city

1495. it's getting at the fact

1496. that God is not only

  1497. that great king

  1498. that benevolent king

  1499. but he's our king

1500. and he longs to adopt us

  1501. as our own

  1502. if we'll just open

1503. the door of our hearts

  1504. to him

  1505. God will be exalted

  1506. among the nations

  1507. one of the ways

  1508. that we

1509. not one of the ways

1510. the way that we're able

  1511. to allow Jesus

  1512. into our hearts

  1513. is when we turn

  1514. from our own ways

1515. and we turn to him

  1516. and say

  1517. not only are you

1518. the God of the universe

  1519. not only are you

1520. the king of the universe

  1521. not only are you

  1522. exalted in the universe

1523. but Lord be my God

  1524. be my king

  1525. you are the one

  1526. with whom my life

  1527. I will worship

  1528. and obey

  1529. you be exalted

  1530. now these words

  1531. about God being exalted

  1532. or really anything

  1533. being exalted

  1534. can really scare

  1535. any of us

  1536. who've ever been abused

  1537. because if you've been

  1538. abused or bullied

  1539. it's where someone's

  1540. being exalted

  1541. who shouldn't be

1542. it's where the more powerful

1543. is taken from the weaker

  1544. and that's wrong

  1545. it's evil

  1546. but when Jesus

  1547. is exalted

  1548. when God is exalted

  1549. it's the rightful

  1550. benevolent king

  1551. the one who should

  1552. be exalted

  1553. the one who should

  1554. be above

  1555. being above

  1556. obeyed and exalted

  1557. and so

  1558. there is truly

  1559. such comfort

  1560. as we look at

  1561. the fact that

  1562. God promises

1563. that he will be exalted

1564. and I want to invite you

  1565. today

  1566. if you haven't ever

  1567. truly given your life

  1568. to God

  1569. if you've never said

  1570. that

  1571. if you've never

  1572. asked him

  1573. for forgiveness

  1574. for your sins

  1575. if you've never

  1576. actually looked to him

  1577. and said

  1578. enough of me

1579. trying to be my own refuge

  1580. enough of me

  1581. trying to live

  1582. the good life

  1583. I can't live

  1584. but Lord

1585. I'm going to look to you

  1586. that you would be

  1587. my refuge

  1588. from the judgment

  1589. that I'm due

1590. and that you would also

  1591. be my strength

  1592. to live the life

1593. you've called me to live

  1594. and as often

  1595. as we follow

  1596. as often as we

  1597. come back to him

  1598. and we say

  1599. God

  1600. Father

  1601. forgive me

  1602. for my sins

  1603. we keep looking

  1604. back to God

  1605. for he is

  1606. the savior

  1607. and not only

  1608. is he the savior

  1609. but he longs

  1610. to be our savior

  1611. my prayer for us

  1612. as a church

  1613. leading into this Sunday

  1614. as we go into

  1615. the new year

  1616. is that we can

  1617. look to God

  1618. with confidence

  1619. to be a refuge

  1620. that if you are

  1621. like me

  1622. someone who

  1623. you've experienced

  1624. pain and suffering

  1625. and so you're

  1626. kind of fearing

  1627. the future

  1628. that you can let

  1629. go of those fears

  1630. and you can look

  1631. to God

  1632. as your refuge

  1633. you can go into

  1634. 2014 with confidence

  1635. that no matter

  1636. what earthquakes

  1637. no matter

  1638. what death

  1639. no matter

  1640. what pain

  1641. might be in store

  1642. for others

  1643. or for yourself

  1644. that you can know

  1645. that God

  1646. will be your refuge

  1647. that we can go

  1648. into a new year

  1649. knowing

  1650. that no matter

  1651. the frailty

  1652. we have

  1653. that God

  1654. will be our strength

  1655. that God

  1656. will be your strength

  1657. to be the dad

  1658. or the mom

  1659. the husband

  1660. or the wife

  1661. or the person

  1662. that he made you

  1663. to be

  1664. that you can

  1665. actually put to death

  1666. those sinful habits

  1667. that have riddled

  1668. our lives

  1669. and we can look

  1670. to God

  1671. for the strength

  1672. we need

  1673. to advance

  1674. the kingdom

  1675. of God

  1676. to bring

  1677. his peace

  1678. and his shalom

  1679. to this earth

  1680. but more than anything

  1681. my prayer is that

  1682. that you and I

1683. can go into the new year

  1684. confident

  1685. that God

  1686. is not only God

1687. who wants to be known about

1688. but he wants to be known

1689. he wants to know us

  1690. we find refuge

  1691. and strength in God

1692. as we get to know him

1693. as we look to him

1694. would you stand with me

  1695. as we pray

  1696. heavenly father

  1697. thank you

  1698. that

  1699. these words

1700. written so many years ago

  1701. are trustworthy

  1702. and true

  1703. lord we thank you

  1704. that you have

  1705. not only invited us

  1706. but commanded us

  1707. to know you

  1708. and lord we say

1709. we want to know you

  1710. we thank you

  1711. for

  1712. your faithfulness

  1713. we thank you

  1714. that

  1715. you made it possible

  1716. that despite

  1717. our frailty

  1718. and defilements

  1719. that we can

  1720. be reconciled to you

  1721. and become your children

  1722. lord we thank you

1723. that you are our refuge

  1724. and our strength

1725. and lord we look to you

  1726. that as we enter

  1727. a new year

  1728. you would help us

  1729. entrust that to you

1730. entrust our future to you

  1731. and stop trying to

  1732. save our own lives

  1733. but instead

1734. seek to lose our life

  1735. for your sake

  1736. that we would live

  1737. the full adventure

  1738. of the life

1739. that you've called us to live

  1740. confident in your goodness

  1741. and your steadfast love

1742. lord we look to you

  1743. in Jesus' name

  1744. amen

  1745. amen

  1746. and

1747. as well as we talk to you

  1748. of the world

  1749. who have come up

  1750. and be the depositions

1751. so you can have them

  1752. 들 proclaimed

  1753. it

  1754. they

  1755. have

  1756. years

  1757. they

  1758. rotate

  1759. their

  1760. come up

  1761. here

  1762. let me

  1763. here
